Clothes for needy kids

The Lions Club of Melton has been assisting Melton police to help children in need by donating clothes and toys to the station.

For many years Lions has donated toys which are given to children and young people who are victims of crime or involved in traumatic events and are in need of a special gift that provides comfort.

On October 5, members began a new initiative that ensures all children who come into police care can be adequately dressed. Senior sergeant Scott Williams said the clothing packs and trauma toys provided by the Melton Lions Club shows care for the community and supports vulnerable young people.

“I am really proud of this project because it directly benefits children and young people that are in need of assistance,” he said.

Lions Club Melton president Pauline Turner said this year a key focus area for the club is supporting children and young people.

“As a club we are passionate about supporting our community, particularly those who may be vulnerable or at risk,” she said.

Moorabool drug crackdown

Moorabool police have conducted a string of police operations targeted at disrupting the drug trade within the municipality in a bid to reduce broader crime numbers.

The operations targeted people allegedly involved in the sale of drugs and resulted in the seizure of cocaine, cannabis plants, weapons and stolen goods from a number of properties. Police say disrupting these operations will have theknock-oneffectofreducing“volume-crime” in the area, especially theft.

On August 18 police executed search warrants at four properties across Bacchus

Marsh and Darley and allegedly seized an ounce of cocaine, a small amount of bute, a number of LSD and ecstasy tablets as well as cash and weapons.

On September 20 a 43-year-old male was charged after police executed a search warrant at a separate Darley property and allegedly discovered 20 hydroponic cannabis plants and a loaded firearm. He has been bailed to appear before a Bacchus Marsh court in November.

Most recently more than $100,000 worth of allegedly stolen goods were recovered at a BalliangEastpropertyonThursday,September 28, including an excavator, boat, bobcat, tip truck, three trailers and approximately 70

power tools.

Star Weekly has reported that criminal offences increased by more than 22 per cent in Moorabool in the 12 months to June 2023, with three of the five most common crimes being related to theft.

Moorabool Crime Investigation Unit detective sergeant Ricky Millar said theft can be directly linked to the area’s drug trade problem.

“Intel shows a high percentage of our crime is driven by persons involved in either drug use or the drug trade,” he said. “If we can identify where drugs are being distributed and close those sorts of places down, it’s certainly going

to reduce risk of property and volume crime in those areas, and we’re looking to do that across Moorabool PSA [Police Service Area], but in particular Bacchus Marsh at the moment.”

Det sgt Millar said police are keen to hear from the public any information they may have that may help with reducing local crime.

“We’re actively seeking persons who are involved in drug crime and stolen propertyeither retention or actually stealing property, which all ties up with our volume crime including burglaries and theft of motor vehicles,” he said.

Watts Ward with Cr Justine Farrugia

There’s been lots happening in Watts Ward over the past few months, with many more exciting projects and works still to come.

A much welcomed park upgrade has been delivered at Banchory Green, along with improvement works to Splendour Circuit Reserve. Both projects were finished in August, with some additional furniture to be installed at Splendour Circuit in coming weeks. Council also installed a fitness station and fun goal at Parkwood Green Reserve in July.

Community consultation for Barwon Drive Reserve and Hillside Recreation Reserve Playspace were undertaken in July with preliminary design works having commenced.

There are also some great roads and infrastructure projects in the works, including stage 2 of the Hume Drive duplication which will start in late 2023, stage 3 of the Macpherson

Park Redevelopment project (rugby pavilion and pitch), a public convenience upgrade at the Toolern Vale Recreation Reserve, and the ongoing construction of the Diggers Rest Community Hub. Other things to look forward to including construction of Plumpton Community Centre and Neighbourhood House, and of course, developing the master plan for the Plumpton Aquatic Centre.

Council has appointed the project manager and quality surveyor for the aquatic centre, with officers, together with the project manager, currently reviewing architect tenders. A report will be prepared for Council in an upcoming Council meeting, with masterplanning set to commence soon after.

The Expo showcases more than 45 exhibitors who deliver support and services to our community and features interactive workshops, entertainment, give-aways and our popular CARE showbags. Don’t miss the guest speakers, including Melton’s Local Citizen of the Year, Les Chitts. Les will talk about his extensive work on inclusiveness and accessibility for people living with a disability in Melton. Also speaking will be best-selling author, advocate and carer, Julie Fisher. An Auslan interpreter will be available at the talks.

The CARE Expo runs from 10am to 2pm on Friday 13 October at Cobblebank Indoor Stadium and entry is free.

It was great to be joined by Member for Melton Steve McGhie to celebrate the start of work on Stage Two of the transformation and upgrade of the Melton Recycling Facility.

The work will divert tonnes of material from landfill by encouraging better separation and recycling of items, improve waste management and cater for our growing community well into the future. Mayor foregoes ball for charities

This year’s Melton council Mayoral Ball Fund will donate more than $44,000 to two Melton not-for-profit organisations.

Foregoing the annual mayoral ball and donating the allocated funds to grassroots organisations is a tradition in Melton council set by Cr Kathy Majdlik during her time as mayor a decade ago.

This year, Mayor Lara Carli chose for the funds to be split equally between youth homelessness service Hope St, and disability support service Pinarc.

“I chose these two organisations because of the amazing work that they do in our community,” she said.

Pinarc deputy chief executive Sara

Cavanagh said the organisation was thrilled to receive the generous donation.

“Every day, Pinarc therapists work with children, teens and adults across Melton to help them reach their goals and ensure that we live in a community in which people with disability are equal and valued members,” she said.

“We look forward to using this donation to support our work in Melton.”

Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett shared the same sentiment.

“When we get a wonderful surprise like this it means we can do more for our clients,” she said.

Ms Bennet said the money will go towards the Hope St Melton service which provides independent units for people aged 16 to

20 years for two years, allowing them to re-engage with education and employment and resolve issues such as mental health.

Of the hundreds of young people the program has engaged, Ms Bennet said it has had a 90 per cent success rate in moving people on to private rentals.

“There are many fantastic organisations in the Melton area, and there are many that don’t have a lot of resources for the people they serve, so we’re really grateful we were one of the two selected,“ she said.

“I’m really thrilled Cr Carli gave me a call herself to tell me about the donation. It highlights the strong partnership Hope St has with Melton council,“ she said.

“Together we’re able to support vulnerable young people in the community.“

Youth strategy ideas wanted

Moorabool council is seeking community input into the development of its Young Communities Strategy.

The first strategy of its kind for Moorabool is billed to be a fully integrated plan for people aged up to 25 years in the municipality Council’s Child Youth and Family Services team is reaching out to young people and families to share their feedback and help inform the strategy.

Moorabool Mayor Rod Ward said he hopes young people and families would take the opportunity to have their say.

“The voices of young people are vital to this strategy,” he said.

“Children and young people will bring unique ideas and opinions to help shape the document.”

The strategy aims to identify trends and social indicators impacting health and wellbeing for children and young people in the shire and identify programs, services and infrastructure required to meet the current and future needs of Moorabool’s communities.

Walk for awareness

This Friday, Arcare’s Sydenham and Hillside will join forces in a walk for breast cancer to mark Pink Ribbon Day.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes place every October. The National Breast Cancer Foundation reports that over 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone, equating to 57 Australians every day.

The older women get, the higher their risk of developing breast cancer, with about three out of four breast cancer cases occurring in women aged 50 years and older.

The foundation projects that more than 3200 Australians will lose their lives to breast cancer this year.

Residents, family members and team

members from Arcare Sydenham will walk the 1.5 kilometres to Arcare Hillside to join fellow residents for a Pink Ribbon Day morning tea.

Arcare Sydenham lifestyle coordinator, Victoria Large said this walk is to raise awareness, and honour those close who have bravely battled breast cancer..

“Breast cancer is something we have all been touched by in some form or another – we know someone who has had it, or we ourselves have beat it,” she said.

“Community involvement for our residents is vital to support their emotional and physical wellbeing, while the close proximity of Arcare Sydenham and Arcare Hillside makes it possible for our residents to meet and mingle.”

Motorbike awareness warning

Motorcycle riders make up more than a quarter of deaths on Melton and Moorabool roads since 2018 and road safety authorities are urging motorists to be on the lookout with warmer weather likely to see more riders on the state’s roads.

TheTransportAccidentCommission(TAC) joined the Department of Transport and Planning and Victoria Police at the beginning of October to launch Motorcyclist Awareness Month.

Led by the Motorcycling Community Engagement Panel (MCEP), the month-long campaign is an annual initiative encouraging both motorists and motorcyclists to share the

road safely. Since 2018, 46 people have died on roads in Melton and Moorabool, with 13 of them being motorcycle riders.

So far this year, 35 motorcyclists have died on Victorian roads, with more than a quarter of these fatalities occurring since the beginning of spring.

People who ride motorcycles account for 17 per cent of deaths and serious injuries state-wide despite only making up four per cent of registered vehicles.

TAC Head of Road Safety Samantha Cockfield said 60 per cent of motorcyclist fatalities involve other vehicles, making it crucial for drivers to do their part in ensuring

the roads are shared safely.

“Everyone needs to be aware of who they’re sharing the road with – motorcyclists are encouraged to wear appropriate protective gear, and drivers should double check for riders at intersections and when changing lanes,” she said.

“As the weather warms up and days get longer we tend to see an increase in the number of motorcyclists on our roads, however we can’t accept that more people will die as a result.”

The TAC’s latest Motorcycle Monitor surveyed 949 Victorian motorcyclists and showed that a large majority of riders do

Djirra’s referendum ’sense of hope’

Djirra chief executive Antoinette Braybrook and her brother Shaun Braybrook were out conducting pre-polling in Cobblebank in the lead up to Saturday’s Voice referendum.

Shaun and Antoinette, together with their younger brother Ryan Braybrook, are long standing residents of Melton.

Shaun and Antoinette both work with the Indigenous community.

Their work has a strong focus on human rights spanning the justice and family violence sectors.

Ms Braybrook said her family had been in Melton for 50 years.

“It hasn’t been an easy journey, we have experienced racism, but along the way we have forged lifelong friendships,” she said.

“Over the past few weeks I have had some really interesting and sometimes uncomfortable conversations with people

that I know about this referendum.

But I have gained a great sense of hope from these conversations knowing that people understand the importance of us being recognised as the First Peoples and being heard and having a say in the policies that impact on our lives.

“The Uluru Statement from the Heart, which brought us to this moment, is an invitation from Aboriginal people to others in this country to walk with us together for real solutions.”

During Djirra’s referendum information sessions, the main concern from people leaning towards voting “no” was the concern that a Voice could “divide the nation”.

people are the most incarcerated people in the world and are more likely to die in custody than other Australians, and Aboriginal children are still being removed from families at “alarming rates”, and Djirra believes a Voice could help address these issues.

Mr Braybrook said he played football for Melton South Football Club and the Darley Devils and was proud to play for his community and form lifelong friendships.

“People always knew what I stood for on the field. I really hope my Melton mates know how important this referendum is to me and the Aboriginal community,” he said.

Djirra advocates informed people that there already is a divide when it comes to Aboriginal life expectancy, which is 10 years less than other Australians, Aboriginal Shaun and Antoinette Braybrook. (Provided)

prioritise safety by wearing the appropriate protective gear. MCEP member Brian Rix reminded people that everyone on our roads has family and friends counting on them to get home safely at the end of the day.

“Underneath that helmet is a much-loved son, daughter, mother, father or grandparent. Please be careful and share the road, particularly around motorcycles, to help everyone get home safely,” he said.

Throughout Motorcyclist Awareness Month, Victorians will have a chance to engage with a number of events across the state including the Australian Moto GP at Phillip Island.

Drivers nabbed in holiday blitz

More than 200 driving offences were detected in Melton and Moorabool by Victoria Police during Operation Scoreboard over the AFL Grand Final long weekend.

The four-day, statewide road policing operation saw police targeting high-risk driving behaviour, with a particular focus on drink and drug driving.

One drink driving offence detected in Moorabool involved a P-plate driver who was allegedly caught drink driving twice in 12 hours. The 29-year-old Epping man was pulled over driving a red Mazda after he was allegedly detected speeding on the Western Freeway in Myrniong about 6pm on Thursday, September

28. After a positive roadside reading, he was taken to a police station and returned an evidentiary breath test of 0.133.

The man’s licence was immediately suspendedandhewasissuedwithinfringement notices for drink driving, exceeding the speed limit by 20kmh and failing to display P plates.

Just 12 hours later police were called to the Western Highway at Warrenheip in relation to a suspected drink driver.

As officers were heading to the location, they were advised a red Mazda had been involved in a collision with a pole. The same 29-year-old Epping man from the previous incident, who was the sole occupant of the car, was assessed

KISS kids from the west

Keen-eyed AFL grand final viewers in the west may have been surprised to see some of Ravenhall’s best young dancers performing alongside international rock band KISS during the mammoth pre-game entertainment.

It was only a month out from the big game that Kstar Studios got the call offering for 50 of their students to take to the field of the MCG and join 450 other dancers performing the classic Rock and Roll All Nite.

Seven-year-old Fraser Rise performer, Cuban, even got the opportunity to take centre stage, back to back with Tommy ‘The Spaceman’ Thayer for his guitar solo.

Cuban said he loved every minute.

“My back-to-back with Spaceman was my dream come true,” he said.

Kstar Studios founder-director Karen Jehodo said she and her team were screaming andcryingwatchingtheshowcometofruition,

with her students in the spotlight.

“They were so excited, this is the biggest thing… they were blown away to perform in a stadium with the world’s biggest rock band,” she said.

Ms Jehodo said it was a whirlwind month for the students, supported by a “crack team” for choreography, make-up and 500 costumes.

Another ’Mini-Kiss’ performer who got on the main-stage was seven-year-old Elias, who said he’d be happy to do the whole thing again tomorrow.

0.134 Police discovered his infringement notices and paperwork regarding his licence suspension inside the crashed vehicle.

He was charged with exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol and driving whilst suspended.

The man has been bailed to face Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on November 21.

Police caught 12 drug drivers and 10 drink drivers across the two LGAs, but almost half of all offences detected were for speeding, with 54 detected in Melton and 45 in Moorabool.

The next most common offences detected

were unregistered vehicles, mobile phone offences, disqualified drivers and seatbelt offences.

Road Policing assistant commissioner Glenn Weirsaidthelongweekendwasbusyforpolice, with Operation Scoreboard detecting more than 5000 offences statewide.

“While many celebrated across the weekend, it was a tragic period on the roads with four lives lost in separate collisions,” he said.

“With the number of lives lost now at a seven-year high, it is paramount that we all do everything we can to stop more trauma on our roads this year. Now is not the time to be complacent.”

I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the event organizers, sponsors, and the council for hosting an event of this magnitude. To my fellow finalists, your incredible work has been a constant source of inspiration.

But the most profound gratitude goes to our extraordinary patients. Many have been part of our journey from the very beginning. Mum’s mission in honour of son

The Rehmat Sandhu Foundation is a Melton-based charity that supports people across the west who are living with disability, struggling financially, experiencing domestic violence and much more. The founder, Ravinder Kaur, is driven by her strong will to rise above her grief and make a difference to the lives of people in need. She spoke to Liam McNally about the foundation’s journey.

Shortly after Ravinder Kaur’s son passed away in 2014, she received a call from a young girl who had met her son at a low point in her life.

The girl said she was sitting in a park alone in the city when a 21-year-old Rehmat Sandhu approached her.

“He said hello to me, and then he asked, are you okay? Are you crying?” she told Ms Kaur.

Thegirlsaidshewasinitiallyconfusedbythe stranger, but she explained to him that she was alone on her birthday and feeling sad.

“Straight away he called all his friends and they organised a birthday for her, a party and a cake and everything and celebrated her birthday,” Ms Kaur said.

“That was Rehmat, and he would do that for anyone.”

Ms Kaur said that it was to honour her son’s caring spirit that inspired her to launch her charity organisation, and name it the Rehmat Sandhu Foundation.

“The very word, Rehmat, means blessing,” she said.

“He was very compassionate, very kind and he always desired to make a positive impact on people, on the lives of others. So I’m just trying to do that.”

Since 2015 Ms Kaur’s tribute to her son’s legacy has been successful in uplifting the community in Melton and across the west.

Ms Kaur has a long history in the healthcare field, and The Rehmat Sandhu foundation began with blood drives and organ donation programs.

It quickly expanded into a leading charity organisation in the disability support field, as well as assisting people who are struggling in any way it can.

“Our aim is to enhance the lives of people

with disabilities by offering essential support services and promoting inclusivity within our community,” she said.

“We aim to reach out across all cultures and abilities, rendering assistance to anyone in need across Melton and the western suburbs.

“We meet the needs of homeless people, disadvantaged youth, seniors, those affected by domestic violence and vulnerable and financially struggling families.

“We also provide support and counselling services to new migrants and victims of domestic violence.”

Thefoundation’ssuccesshasbeenrecognised through record-breaking blood donations, a Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions award, and celebrated community events, but

for Ms Kaur it’s one-on-one assistance that brings the most satisfaction.

“We are particularly proud of our work in providing vital assistance to individuals with disabilities, helping them lead more fulfilling lives,” she said.

“Additionally, our foundation has made significant strides in promoting community awareness. Any positive change we bring to someone’s life is a source of pride for us.”

The current economic climate has seen demand for the foundation’s services increase, with Ms Kaur noting an increase in vulnerable families in need of food assistance, with fuel and day to day supplies.

The organisation responds to rising demand by making an effort to be available when many

organisations aren’t - including on weekends and holidays - and by doing little things that help struggling people regain their confidence, such as providing personalised birthdays for kids.

Ms Kaur said the organisation is soon set to expand following the purchase of a house in Melton West that is almost finished being renovated.

“We can accommodate more people with disabilities, or who are homeless, or domestic violence affected families,” she said.

“We’re going to have a community garden so that we can have a veggie patch and people can come and have coffee, socialise.

“Im very, very, excited about this one.”

Looking further ahead, Ms Kaur said her vision is for the foundation to continue to expand its reach and impact.

“We aim to continue providing comprehensive support to individuals with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive community. Additionally we aspire to create partnership and collaborations that enable us to make an even greater difference in the lives of those we serve,” she said.

Ms Kaur said it’s the community that keeps her going.

“I’m just trying to make a positive impact,” she said. “The love and support I get from everyone, it makes me keep going.

“Rehmat Sandhu foundation is we, not I, it’s all of us.”

Ms Kaur said anyone in the community who isstrugglingshouldreachouttothefoundation to see how they can help.

“Anyone who is in need, we dont judge, we don’t ask questions,” she said.

Advice for a slithery sssspring

The warmer sssspring weather has woken up the most slithery residents of Melton, Wyndham and Brimbank, and residents have taken to Facebook to share numerous snake sightings.

Star Weekly spoke to local wildlife controller Jarrod Bingham about what residents can expect from a particularly hot spring-summer season, and what to do if snakes get a little too neighbourly.

MrBinghamsaidthatwhilethewarmspring may bring the snakes out earlier, that doesn’t

necessarily mean the entire season will be particularly busy in his line of work.

“It’s a common question for all snake catchers that we get, is this year busier than usual?” he said. “Yes they may come out earlier in different years due to the weather, but in terms of numbers our call outs do even out to roughly [1,500] every year.”

Celebrating a century

Melton South Primary school has been celebratingits100thyearthroughout2023,and it’s all culminating in a Centenary Gala Day on Saturday, October 21.

The main event of the day will be at noon with a special ceremony and opening of the time capsule, but guests are invited to come alongbetween10amand3pmforold-fashioned games, a maze, petting zoo, food trucks, devonshire tea, photoboards, video and photo boards and much more.

The school has been gearing up for this day all year, with a historic dress-up day, a ‘songs through the decades’ day, and teaching students in a special 1920s themed classroom.

Classroom teacher and Centenary CommitteememberEmmaShadwicksaidshe’s excited to have many ex-students and families come and see how the school has changed over the years.

“I’ve learned so much about the school’s

history in undertaking the organisation of the centenary this year and it’s all been very interesting, for example our iconic administration building is a historical site of local significance that was featured in a council publication some years ago,” she said.

“Our principal Marilyn Costigan has also received many donations of artefacts over the years, such as a genuine leather school bag with student books from the 50s. We have originals of both our 50th and 60th Jubilee celebration booklets, which some extracts have been included in this year’s Centenary booklet.

“One Facebook group was even created by a group of older, ex-students who attended between 1950 and 1965 and many of those members will be returning to visit.”

Garage Sale Trail is back

Between 8am and 2pm on Sunday, October 22, Eynesbury residents will be opening their garages to bargain hunters, selling everything fromqualityusedfurnituretorecycledfashion.

Resimax Group chief executive Aziz “Ozzie” Kheir said the one-day event provides an opportunity for Eynesbury residents to come together as a community and connect.

“I’m excited to see our residents unite once again for the Eynesbury Garage Trail. It’s more than just a shopping experience; it’s an opportunity to chat with your neighbours, make new friends, and strengthen the bonds thatmakeEynesburysuchawonderfulplaceto live,” he said.

“The event is a testament to Eynesbury’s

unity and vibrancy, and I encourage everyone to attend on the day.”

Information will be collated, published, and shared to locals attending the garage sales, including a map of participating houses and what payment methods are accepted on the day.

A $25 gift voucher to local Eynesbury restaurant, Ms Peacock, is also on offer to everyone who registers for the event.

Following the success of last year’s event, the day is set to see locals nab a bargain and save preloved items from going to landfill in the process.

So keeping that in mind, keep doors closed and be vigilant when walking out under your patio that there may be a possibility that you have a friend under there trying to escape that heat.”

Mr Bingham recommended keeping lawns mown, trimming bushes around the base, not leaving piles of rubbish, rocks or wood laying around, closingupholes, andkeepingpetwater bowls away from doors so animals seeking

water aren’t coming to walkways.

“If you see a snake remain calm and don’t panic… that snake is more scared of you, trust me, so just stop what you are doing and let that snake slither away from you,” he said.

“If it can’t get out of the property on its own accord or if you are in a built up area where it would be safer removing it then as soon as the snake is some distance away to safely move back then by all means keep an eye on it or call a snake catcher.

Perfect start for theatre group

Melton’s first community theatre group launched this year and has staged its first production, ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’. Melton Performing Arts (MPA) is a non-profit organisation which aims to prioritise the community above all else while bringing drama, music, dance and all forms of performance art to Melton. Check out some photos from MPA’s first run of shows.

Spring has sprung

Melbourne’s outer north-west has been awash with a sea of yellow canola fields to welcome the change in season.

Melton and Mooroolbool residents can witness the flowering fields, which are normally at their best from the middle of September through to the middle of October.

The crop is grown across the state- with

the main production in the south west- for its seeds, which are crushed to use in margarine and cooking oil.

According to Agriculture Victoria, Australia produces 1.9 to 2.7 million tonnes of the grain every year, and Victoria was the second-highest canola producing state between 2017-18 and 2019-20.

As a country, Australia is widely known for its high quality exports, and canola is no exception, with some significant international markets for its canola.

Most of Australia’s canola in 2019-20 was exported to the European Union for biodiesel, and in 2020 the five year average price was approximately $560 per tonne, Agriculture

Victoria said.

People wishing to see the vibrant fields can try the road to Sunbury Road past the airport or the Princes Freeway towards Little River.

‘Canola tourists’ are encouraged to enjoy from a distance, as most flowers are grown on private farms and used for agriculture.

Delivered prematurely through an emergency caesarean section, baby Caleb’s life was saved with the help of a point of care ultrasound (POCUS) machine.

Now, his story has allowed the Western Health Foundation to raise $154,000 to purchase a new POCUS machine that will help treat more babies in the future.

In July 2022, Caleb’s mum, Emily, visited the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital for her 34-week ultrasound. A Western Health doctor noticed that her baby had developed a condition called foetal hydrops, causing a severe fluid build-up in his lungs.

‘‘ We were so thankful that Caleb was healthy and could finally come home and be with his daddy and me ’’ - Emily

The next day, Emily was rushed in for an emergency caesarean section after Caleb’s heart rate dropped dangerously low. Caleb was born premature and extremely unwell.

Due to the fluid build-up in his lungs, Caleb had stopped breathing and the Western Health team set up the POCUS machine in the operating theatre.

Using the POCUS machine, doctors could determine the depth of the fluid in his lungs as well as its precise location. This allowed the neonatologists to accurately insert drains into Caleb’s tiny lungs to remove the fluid.

In October 2022, after 100 days in hospital, Caleb was finally ready to go home with his parents.

Emily said she and her family were ‘eternally

thankful’ to the staff at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital.

“Without them, and the incredible POCUS machine, our gorgeous Caleb would not be here with us today. [Bringing Caleb home] was such a joyful day, we were so thankful that Calebwashealthyandcouldfinallycomehome and be with his daddy and me,” she said,

The ultrasound machine is set to be of enormous benefit as the Western Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) moves into caring for extremely preterm babies.

Western Health said the timing is critical, as almost 7,000 babies are delivered each year at the hospital, with the numbers expected to

Carjacking crime spree

Police have charged a man and woman following an alleged carjacking and attempted carjacking incidents.

It’s alleged a male passenger got out of a stolen Toyota Kluger outside a fast-food restaurant on the Western Freeway in Rockbank about 5.30am on October 2, opened the door of another vehicle and assaulted the male driver, before attempting to steal the car. The male driversustainedminorinjuriesbutdrove away.

grow over the coming years.

Western Health clinician Dr Penny Kee said Caleb’s story is not unique.

“Every day I care for sick and small babies who need specialised care and equipment to keep them alive, and every year, the number of premature babies we care for continues to increase,” she said.

The funds raised were a joint effort between the generosity of the community who heard baby Caleb’s story, along with corporate sponsorship. To support Western Health Foundation as they raise funds for additional life-savingequipment,donatehere:https://give. whfoundation.org.au/donate-now

At about 3.25am on October 3 the male allegedly got out of the Kluger in a car park on Tom Roberts Parade in Point Cook and assaulted a man, dragged him out of a silver Audi and stole it. Both vehicles were then driven away. Shortly after 9am police spotted the Audi and the female driver was arrested at the scene. Officers then spotted the Toyota Kluger in Seabrook. The male driver allegedly dumped the Toyota Kluger and fled the scene before being arrested on Lennon Boulevard in Point Cook.

The 21-year-old Point Cook man has been charged with carjacking, attempted carjacking, drive whilst disqualified, theft, theft of motor vehicle and attempted obtain property by deception. He was remanded and will next appear at Werribee Magistrates’ Court on October 11. The 28-year-old woman, of no fixed address, has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, drive whilst disqualified, theft and bail offences She has been bailed to appear at Werribee Magistrates’ Court also on October 11.

The ultimate 4x4 dual cab ute

Well, hello. We’d almost forgotten about the other Korean – you know, SsangYong.

After some financial woes, restructure and change of ownership, SsangYong is back in business selling cars, with two SUVs and a 4x4 dual cab ute to offer.

Originally launched here in 2004, Musso was available as both a ute and SUV, the former calledtheMussoSports, whichattractedbuyers with a bargain price and Mercedes-sourced turbo-diesel.

These days ute and SUV have parted company, but it’s the Musso 4x4 dual cab ute that we are checking out here and its bid to grab a slice of the lucrative sports utility market.

Launched in 2018, Musso is offered in two lengths with different-sized tubs, but is not available in cab-chassis form with a metal tray replacement.

Styling Musso comes in a choice of short or long wheelbase, both with the same 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.

The short wheelbase version is 5095mm long, with a 3100mm wheelbase and 1300mm long tub – and can carry a 790kg payload.

At 5409mm, the XLV is 314mm longer, with a stretched 3210mm wheelbase and extended 1600mm tub that is able to accommodate a full tonne (1020kg). The shorter version is fitted with benign five-link coil suspension and is more of a sports focused model.

Tick the box for the long wheelbase option and it also comes with supportive leaf springs at the rear and is targeted at the working end of the market.

Both versions have independent, double-wishbone front suspension. There are two grades from which to choose, ELX and Ultimate, with a couple of add-on packs from which to pick.

Prices start from $36,790 driveaway for the short wheelbase ELX with a six-speed manual.

ThelongwheelbaseELXis$38,290driveaway, also with a manual. An auto adds $2000.

Ultimate is priced from $43,090 driveaway, with an auto and metallic paint thrown in. Addingthelongertubtakesthepriceto$44,590 and topping it off with the Luxury Pack takes the total driveaway price to $47,590.

Metallic paint is $495, the XLV Pack $1500 and Ultimate Pack $3000.

Even at these prices it leaves plenty of overhead for further optioning the vehicleand there’s plenty of them.

Sports bars, fender flares, side steps, tub liner, roller tonneau, under-body protection and sports suspension kits are available.

There’s a choice of six colours. Atlantic Blue is standard; Grand White, Silky White Pearl, Marble Grey, Space Black or Indian Red cost extra.

Standard kit includes cloth seats and manual air, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 18-inch alloys, cruise control, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, projector headlights with integrated LED turn signals, frontandrearparkingsensors, autohighbeam, auto lights and wipers and an auto dimming mirror.

Ultimate adds black 18-inch alloys, artificial leather, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, 360-degree camera and walk-away locking.

Our test vehicle was the short wheelbase

Ultimate with $205 Luxury Pack fitted at $46,685 driveaway.

It adds Nappa leather, dual zone climate air, HID headlights, power-adjust front seats, powered driver lumbar support, heated rear seats and a power operated sunroof.

Musso is covered by a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with seven-year roadside assistance and seven-year capped price servicing.

The warranty extends to commercial use.

Infotainment

Infotainment consists of an 8.0-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth,

AM/FM radio and wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

It’s not the fastest, or most intuitive system that we have used – but it’s not the worst either.

At times it can be difficult to see, particularly in strong sunlight.

The front console offers two USB-A ports, a 12V/120W power outlet and a cigarette lighter.

Engines / transmissions

A 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 133kW of power at 4000 rpm and 400Nm of torque from 1400-2800 rpm.

The latter figure rises to 420Nm in the longer XLV but is available over a narrower band from 1600 to 2600 rpm, presumably because it is expected to carry heavier loads.

Transmission is six-speed manual or six-speed auto, with drive to the rear wheels and selectable four-wheel drive, with 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo ranges. It also has an auto-locking rear diff.

Safety

As yet Musso has not been rated by ANCAP for safety and we cannot justifiably award more than five points for this feature on this basis.

But the safety story is a strong one with six airbags, a rear-view camera and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Front Vehicle Start Warning, Active Rollover Protection and Driver Attention Warning.

Ultimate adds Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Warning (RCTW) Lane Change Collision Warning (LCW) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Two ISOFIX and three top tether child seat anchors are provided.

The entry level model lacks reach adjustment for the steering wheel, but in a real faux-pas the rear-centre seating position is equipped only with a lap seat belt.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen one of these in a modern vehicle.

Driving

Musso’s new body-on-frame platform is shared with the SsangYong Rexton.

The rigid body-on-frame design features high strength steel with eight large mounting points that contribute to lower levels of road

noise and a more refined ride.

Weighing up to 2090kg, it can tow a 3500kg braked load and is equipped with trailer sway control as standard.

Steering is hydraulic in ELX but Ultimate scores speed sensitive power steering, with an 11.8-metre or 12.2-metre turning circle depending on wheelbase.

And,insomethingofararityforthesegment, it comes with four-wheel disc brakes, ventilated at the front -- most of the more fancied utes still come with rear drums.

With a 75-litre tank, fuel consumption ranges from 7.9 to 9.0L/100km, depending on grade and wheelbase.

Nexen N Priz RH7 road tyres are fitted, with 255/60 18s for Musso and 235/70 17s for XLVsilver for ELX and black for Ultimate.

A full-size spare is provided.

We’ve always felt the tub in the Musso was too short, a bit stubby even compared to other utes. The latest model addresses this issue, at leastwiththelongwheelbaseXLVwhichboasts one of the longest tubs in its class.

Having said that, we were still able to transport a heavy, power adjustable hospital-style bed in the short wheelbase, even though the end jutted over the tailgate.

Fortunately, it was only for a short distance.

Although our test vehicle was not fitted with side steps, grab handles at each of the four doors makes entry easier.

Rear legroom is limited, particularly for knees which press the back of the front seat.

Musso is push-button start and performance is surprisingly strong, both off the mark and in roll-on acceleration.

You can change gears manually with a thumb-operated switch on the side of the transmission lever.

The feel is solid but nothing fancy, with stiff suspension that generates plenty of old school shake and shudder. Large bumps are likely to produce some steering wheel backlash.

The digital instrument cluster looks a bit underdone and while you can choose from three different skins, it needs to be more configurable.

In terms of dimensions, the standard tub is 1300mm x 1570mm x 570mm, with a width of 1100mm between wheel arches. The longer tub is 1600mm, with other dimensions the same.

SsangYong Musso Ultimate 4x4 dual cab utility, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, 6spd automatic, part-time 4WD

Note: These prices are driveaway and include government or dealer delivery charges.

The first holds 1011 litres while the longer tub has a 1262-litre capacity - an increase of almost 25 per cent.

As for off-road capability, Musso presents mainly as a farm or worksite candidate. Weekend warriors will need to invest in a lift kit and some chunkier all-terrain rubber to tackle anything tougher.

Low range gearing and a locking rear diff deliver plenty of traction, with hill descent control as well as hill start assist to help.

But a silly 23-degree approach angle, modest 215mm ground clearance and equally shy 350mm wading depth are limiting factors, the former when it comes to negotiating tricky fire trails with some rock hopping involved.

But the foundations are good and Musso certainly has potential.

We were getting an impressive 7.1L/100km after more than 500km.

Summing up

Musso is the proverbial value for money.

The styling is generic but the basics are there, it just needs fine tuning to meet market expectations.

To wit we live in a digital world and that means digital radio and a wireless charge pad need to be added.

It’s got the desired black wheels but a sports bar and soft tonneau (at minimum) are needed to complete the look that 4x4 dual cab buyer’s desire.

CarPlay and Android Auto are okay when they work, but when you’re out in the sticks and run out of reception, built-in navigation is your friend.

These electronic aids are all available in other markets, but have obviously been removed to keep down the price.

While resale could be an issue, Musso presents as a quality product with more than enough off-road capability for most, at a price that is frankly difficult to ignore.

Don’t forget the Nappa leather and vented front seats.

United season around the corner

Daniel Penha was the happiest man on earth when he scored his first goal in a Western United jersey last week.

The Brazilian star has arrived at Western United and settled immediately into the side, making his competitive debut against Sydney FC in the Australia Cup and catching the eye in his brief cameo.

But Penha went one better in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, scoring early in the second half as United won the clash 2-1.

After being played clean through by Noah Botic, Penha had much of the attacking half to run into and following a lovely dummy shot, the Brazilian blasted a brilliant finish into the back of the net.

Leaping into the air and releasing a wave of emotion, Penha celebrated in style and said after the game that it was a special feeling after the adversity of injury over the last 12 months.

“I can’t tell you. I am so, so, so happy,” he said.

“After I scored, I cried a little bit because the mind can remember the hard times in the last year. I am so happy, I’m looking forward to this season.

“After one year, I’ve come back again and I can play again in the first 11. I’m so happy to score, to help the team. I think this is a good game for the start of the season. I’m so happy to be back again.”

After the club reached the quarter-finals in the Australia Cup for the first time, United is continuing to get up to speed ahead of the A-League Men opener in just over two weeks.

Penha is buoyant about how the side is shaping up, with United aiming to return to the finals after missing out last season.

“Our team is so good, we have good staff,

She’s on the rise! Improving filly lunges ahead

James Herbertson’s early race decision to remain in the running line paid dividends when Shes Ruby Roo scored an upset win in the Aldebaran Park Need For Speed Princess Final at Melton on Friday night.

Having his first drive on the filly, Herbertson refrained from slotting three back along the pegs and instead opted to stay one wide before subsequently landing in the one out-one back trail while the $1.35 favourite Rockinwithattitude speared to the lead.

Herbertson pulled Shes Ruby Roo ($8.50) out three wide with 500 metres to travel and the Jess Tubbs-prepared daughter of Creatine fought on stoutly in the home straight to grab Rockinwithattitude on the line.

Herbertson said he thought he was a winning chance on turning for home.

“At the top of the straight I thought that I could give it a shake,” Herbertson said.

“And then my filly made up a lot of ground inthelast50metresoftherace,itwasprobably

a bit of both the favourite stopping and Shes Ruby Roo getting home.”

Herbertson revealed he almost eased onto the peg line when the opportunity presented itself in the first 50 metres of the race.

“Then I thought I’d give her a chance and stay one off as she had been going well,” he said.

Herbertson predicts a bright future for Shes Ruby Roo.

“She has nice speed, a strong gait and she tries, and I think Greg (Sugars) and Jess are still learning about her,” he said.

Later in the evening, the Wayne Potter-trained The Locomotive confirmed his dominance of the three-year-old colts and geldings’ trotting ranks with a soft win in the Prince Final.

The Locomotive enjoyed the run of the race in the one out-one back trail and with Nathan Jack sitting quietly, the son of La Coocaracha eased past the leader Grumpee to score by

three metres in a mile rate of 1:57.7.

Potter acknowledged the colt’s premier standing in the current crop of three-year-old trotters.

“It’s probably not the best crop we’ve seen, but all you can do is beat them,” Potter said.

“He’s got speed and can stick on a bit - he’s just a real professional racehorse.”

A $60,000 purchase as a yearling, The Locomotive has now banked almost $310,000 from his 13 wins of which eight have been in feature races.

Potter said the son of Muscle Mass will get the opportunity to extend his stake earnings before the end of the season in the Victoria TrottersDerbyandtheBreedersCrownSeries.

The Mark and Nathan Purdon trained filly High Step outclassed her rivals in the Bob Conroy 2YO Trotters Classic while Queen Elida chalked up her sixth consecutive victory in The George Gath and Keayang Chucky led all the way in the Tornado Valley Trot Final.

Scoble to take the reins

Melton has found its replacement for Ballarat Football League premiership coach Aaron Tymms.

Tymms departed the club following its one point elimination final loss to East Point in early September.

Troy Scoble has taken the role at the Bloods, and has big shoes to fill following Tymms’ successful reign at the club, which included two grand final appearances and a premiership last year.

However, Scoble comes to the Bloods with a wealth of experience, as he coached Riddells Creek to a Riddell District Football League premiership in 2013, coached Talent League side Western Jets from 2016-18, and more recently has been an assistant coach at Geelong in the Victorian Football League, finishing at the Cats at the start of this year due to work commitments.

“I had no plans to coach local footy again,” Scoble said.

“But Melton is one of those clubs that has a

really attractive list, all of the players are really keen to learn and develop their footy.

“So it’s a good opportunity to be able to add some value. “One of the attractors to the role was that they are a close to fully local footy side and the club really wants to continue that and wants to continue to develop their own.

“And that aligns with what I believe in, if you’re able to develop your own players that can only help your footy club.”

After spending the last few years within AFL pathways such as the VFL and Talent League,Scoble’shasapassionfordevelopment and knows the ways in which it is done at the highest levels.

“A lot of that expertise I’ve gained is around development,” he said.

“I’ve seen the benefits of what development can do, everyone gets fixated on the outcome of winning, but I think if you invest your time and your mindset into the development of your group, that stuff can take care of itself.

“I’ve gained a lot of skills in the space so to come back locally and put them in place, yeah, it’ll be a big focus because I think every player

on the list has got an opportunity to develop their footy.”

Whilst at the Jets, Scobes coached a three-peat premiership with the Bloods’ under 16 and 17 age group and which earned him the 2017 AFL Victoria, Stan Alves youth coach of the year award.

To return to Melton to work with some of the players he coached as juniors was another incentive to return.

“The opportunity to coach the guys I coached through junior footy and certainly in my involvement when I was coaching at the Western Jets was definitely an attractor.

“But I didn’t really have any ambition to coach throughout the year, I hadn’t thought much about it.

“When the opportunity was proposed by the club and you start to have a look at it, you think this would actually be a really good club to coach.

“The committee is really stable, the club’s financiallysoundandtheyhaveagoodplaying list, when you look at those things, you think, ‘oh this is great’.”

Hodgson arrives to lead the struggling Panthers

Former Sunbury coach Travis Hodgson has taken the coaching mantle at the struggling Melton South Panthers in the Ballarat Football League.

The Panthers went winless throughout all of the season just gone and only won three games in 2021.

Hodgson holds a fantastic resume as both a player and a coach, most recently as coach of the Lions, after coaching Bacchus Marsh to a premiership in 2016.

While turning the Panthers’ form around is a challenge, it is one Hodgson said he is looking forward to.

“It is a very big challenge, but the club’s got a pretty good understanding of where it’s at,” he said.

“There’s no confusion from their end, so they’re pretty committed to try and make the climb and I’m excited by the challenge, there’s no doubt about that, and I’ll invest in it heavily.

“It might take a bit of time but I think if you can turn situations around like this they can be pretty special journeys.

“There’s no guarantees, and there’s a lot of work that goes into it but I think it’s a really good cause.

“I’ve taken part in rebuilding phases in the past, where clubs have started a fair way off the pace, and they’re always pretty exciting journeys, so I’m looking forward to having a crack at it.”

On top of Hodgson’s list was to add players to the list, whilst ensuring there wasn’t much turnover from the current playing group, which the club has been able to do.

“My first priority is definitely recruits, obviously a game plan and style will come secondary based on who we end up getting,” he said.

“Most of my energy at the moment is going into adding quality players to the list, South has some really good young kids.

“But we’re light on for experience and light on for A-grade talent, so that’s the challenge to try and get depth, that was an issue for the club.”

While Hodgson is realistic with the fact that wins might still be hard to come by in 2024, he just wants his side to put up more of a fight.

“Everyone loves winning games… but in the short term it’s about becoming more competitive,” he said.

“We gave up 3000 points last year which is way too many, so I think as a starting point it’s about being harder to play against and harder to score against.”

“Build those foundations and be in games for a lot longer, the longer you’re in games, the more chance you are of winning.

“That’s definitely the starting point and that’ll be the focus when I get the players in front of me.”

Boy oh boy, what a win

Bulletproof Boy claimed a second Smoken Up Sprint with a brilliant front-running display in Saturday night’s $50,000 feature at Melton.

The veteran pacer held off a class field to win the dash over 1720m, with the result giving trainer-driver Scott Ewen’s gelding the best possible chance of securing a Pryde’s EasiFeed Victoria Cup start next week.

Bulletproof Boy led as expected from gatetwoandthensprintedhomeinfinal quarters of 26.9 and 27.8 to fend off his rivals and score from the fast-finishing Triple Eight and third-placed Helluva. Favourite Catch A Wave was snagged back to last from his spot inside the back row, and after sprinting up to second at the 200m mark, faded late for fifth.

“He’s a freak this horse. He’s a nine-year-old and he’s going as good as he’s ever going to go. And to run a 54 half, too - that’s what sort of won him the race,” said Ewen, who raised his whip in triumph crossing the line.

Cobras get their man

Former Carlton player Dennis Armfield has been appointed Bacchus Marsh’s coach for next year’s Ballarat Football League season.

The Cobras announced that Armfield would be the man to replace Jason Williams after he got an assistant coaching role with Port Adelaide.

Armfield played 145 games at the Blues, kicking 75 goals in his career that spanned from 2008- 2017.

Since retiring from the AFL Armfield has done some work with North Melbourne’s AFLW program and coached at Park Orchads in the Eastern Football League for the previous four seasons.

“It’s a huge honour to represent any football club,” he said.

“I’ve been a part of metro leagues for the past five or six years, to experience something different is exciting in a pretty powerful and strong competition.

“My values in life are connection, love and

growth and I think I get to experience all three of those at Bacchus Marsh.

“We’ve got such a young list of great young talent, surrounded by a couple of oldies and hopefully I can be another oldie that can share some wisdom to these young kids and drive them to the next stage.”

Although the Cobras only won six matches this year, finishing in eighth position, winning their last four matches and putting up a fight against the eventual premiers, losing by just 12 points.

“I don’t want to put a limit on what we can and can’t do,” he said.

“How they finished off the year was strong, I think if they come back, willing to put some extra work in, and I think the finish of the year shows that they are eager to do that.

“With youth, growth can be quite rapid, but if it’s done in the right way, I think with myself and the people at Bacchus Marsh around me can ultimately invest in these young kids.

“But also I don’t want to forget the senior boys, I’m 36 and if I were to play I still hope

I can add value, develop a new trick or a new skill.

“It’s a very exciting club, it’s a very exciting time and I’m very honoured to be in charge.”

Armfield is no guarantee to lace on the boots next season, although he wants to it will be determined on how his body is, and how the list is shaping.

“I want to make sure that I’m not hindering or halting any young talent’s development,” he said.

During Armfield’s time at the Blues he was coached by four coaches including AFL Hall of Famer Mick Malthouse.

“I’vehadsomegreatcoachesthathavetaught me good and bad things that I’ve resonated with and also disliked, as I’m sure I’m doing the same for some young kids,” Armfield said.

“But as local footballers we are people first, workers second and we are local footballers third, so for me it’s about getting these kids to buy in and be committed for the little time we do have them together.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

“I always had a plan. If I didn’t have to go as hard in the first quarter, when (Kate Gath and Catch A Wave) came I was just going to start running and hope he’d just keep going - and he did.”

The Cranbourne horseman and his connections have had a dream run with Bulletproof Boy, who has now won 36 races including the 2021 Smoken Up Sprint.

He looks to have thrust his name right into Victoria Cup calculations courtesy of Saturday night’s victory. The final field was confirmed on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s barrier draw live on Sky Racing.
