Cafe is shutting up shop By Cade Lucas This Saturday’s meeting of the Wyndham Repair Cafe will be the last unless emergency funding can be found. Part of the global repair and recycling movement with 2500 sites worldwide, The Wyndham Repair Cafe began in Werribee in 2018 and has survived on funding grants from Wyndham council since. However, with council rejecting the cafe’s latest funding submission, founder and operator Joe Ferlazzo said that the November monthly meeting could signal the end. “At the moment we’re in limbo,” said Mr Ferlazzo who is trying to find alternative backers to keep the doors open. “We’re trying to secure external funding from private businesses who want to sponsor. Our last meeting is on November 11 and then it’s an uncertain future beyond that.” Held once a month at the Community Shed in Wyndham Park, the Wyndham Repair Cafe involves volunteers coming to repair and restore all manner of goods to prevent them from being thrown away. “In all we’ve probably stopped two tonne going to land fill,” said Mr Ferlazzo of the amount of items they’d repaired. He said the cafe’s community benefits went beyond waste reduction. “We’ve had the ability to inject a lot of recycling and reuse knowledge into the community. Our meetings that we have include the fact that the client can actually participate in the educational process of saving items, so they become part of the process which is educational.” While not angry at council’s decision, Mr Ferlazzo is confused as to why these community benefits no longer warranted support. “We appreciate what they’ve done to date, but we were shocked at the lack of continuation on funding.“ Mr Ferlazzo wasn’t alone. “I didn’t know that there was a funding submission and am certainly shocked to hear that this organisation is finishing up. I’d like to find out more so will be seeking some information myself,“ said Wyndham councillor Marcel Mahfoud commenting below the cafe’s Facebook post announcing its

impending the closure. A spokesperson for Wyndham council explained the decision. “The recent Community Grant application from the Wyndham Repair Cafe was not successful, primarily due to budget

inaccuracies and ineligible funding being requested,” the spokesperson said. “Council staff have reached out to the applicant to discuss other funding options and to provide support with any future applications if needed.”

Unless private sponsors can be found, there will be no future applications from the Wyndham Repair Cafe. Anyone interested in sponsoring can visit their Facebook page or https://www. growwithjoe.org/index.html

Wyndham is low on liveability Traffic congestion and infrastructure not keeping pace with population growth have been blamed for Wyndham’s poor performance in the 2023 Australian Liveability Census released last week. Wyndham was rated the least liveable council area in metropolitan Melbourne according the census which was conducted by planning consultancy company Place Score between March and June this year. More than 26,000 participants nationwide, including 3000 in Victoria, were asked to rate their neighbourhoods on a range of attributes such as ease of movement, connectivity, access to local amenities, the quality of open space and whether shops and businesses catered for their daily needs.

With each council area allocated a score out of 100, Wyndham’s total of 55-60 was the lowest in Melbourne followed by neighbouring Melton and Brimbank on 60-65. Responses on the Wyndham Star Weekly Facebook page clearly indicated that transport, traffic congestion and population growth contributed to the area’s low score. “Infrastructure doesn’t support the growth,” said Susan McBean of Hoppers Crossing. “We’ve become too overpopulated. Stop building new housing estates. We need better roads particularly the main access roads in and out and more schools as existing schools are overcrowded. Perhaps if we weren’t such a safe Labor seat things might get done.” Werribee’s Daiman McIntyre also criticised

Labor governments and Werribee MP and state treasurer Tim Pallas for neglecting the area. “The roads are choked, medical and emergency services are under staffed and under resourced.” Geelong’s Phil Jefferson said he left Wyndham due to its rapid growth, but that a lack of new infrastructure wasn’t the only problem saying “Also, to a great extent, the current infrastructure is not being maintained to an appropriate standard.” In a statement, Wyndham mayor Susan McIntyre acknowledged that rapid population growth presented both an opportunity and a challenge for the municipality and sympathised with frustrated residents.

“Wyndham’s residents deserve to have the same access to services and infrastructure as their metropolitan counter parts.” However, Cr McIntyre said the liveability census didn’t provide a fair comparison. “Comparing greenfield emerging areas like Wyndham that have had to start from the ground up – planning and developing infrastructure with long established urban areas that have many more years, resources and funding is not an equal or helpful comparison as it is not even playing field.” Cr McIntyre said there were other ways of measuring liveability, such as the popularity of local events and said existing capital works projects and the recently passed Wyndham 2040 Plan would help ease the problems.

School’s global outlook As one of the most multicultural communities in the country, it’s fitting that a school from Wyndham was recently honoured for its global approach to education. Werribee Secondary College received the Dr Lawrie Shears Outstanding Global Teaching and Learning award at the Victorian Education Excellence Awards on October 27. “I guess we’ve been recognised for our work in developing global citizenship within our school community,” said assistant principal Joanna Sommers. As for what global citizenship is, the school has developed it’s own definition which states: ‘Global citizenship is where and empowered and empathetic students demonstrate and appreciation for cultural diversity and take an active interest in Indigenous and global issues

and perspectives.’ Ms Sommers explained how this was put into practice. “For example we now have students involved in events like model United Nations conferences, we have a groups of students called global ambassadors who seek to enact change within our school community and of course we offer our International baccalaureate program which adds a lot of value to our school community.” She said the diversity of both local community and among the school’s own students, meant focusing on global citizenship was a necessity. “Our school community reflects contemporary Australia so we want our students to interact with other people and be open minded and respectful of the views of others.”

When school students have to go and visit the principal it usually follows bad behaviour and precedes some sort of punishment. Fortunately for a group of students from Werribee Secondary College, Shirley Cameron is a retired principal these days and when they visited her at Wyndham Lodge aged care facility recently, it was money being handed out rather than punishment. The students were there to present Ms Cameron with a cheque for funds they’d raised to assist with the construction of a renewal garden at the facility. Wyndham Lodge spokesperson Sharon Oates said the garden would provide residents such as Shirely Cameron with a sense of peace, hope and well-being after a challenging few years. “After living and continuing to live through

the Covid Pandemic, this garden is of vital importance for, not only the residents, but also for everyone’s mental health, well-being, and quality of life,” Ms Oates said. As well as being a former principal of Werribee Secondary College, Shirely Cameron has also been a prominent member of the Wyndham community and even a famous cookbook author. In 1966 Ms Cameron co-authored ‘Cookery the Australian Way’ which has since become a staple of kitchens across the country, selling more than 750,000 copies. After receiving the cheque, Ms Cameron shared afternoon tea with the students and provided insights about what Werribee Secondary College was like in her day. No detention was required. Cade Lucas

Erin strides for a cause A young Werribee mum is on a mission to educate more Wyndham residents about stroke this November. Erin Simmonds was just 30-years-old at the time of her stroke in August this year. She said she initially dismissed her symptoms as carpel tunnel syndrome. “I was laying in bed with my husband and daughter, and I noticed I couldn’t feel my face, or the ends of my fingers on my left hand. It was like I’d lost all of my fine motor skills,” Ms Simmonds said. “I said to my husband, something is not right, so we went to the doctor, but he didn’t think it was anything serious. Thankfully, I followed my instincts and went to hospital. They rushed me through for tests and found out I’d had a stroke, they also determined I’d had several strokes in the past.” Ms Simmonds was in hospital for four days and spent a further month recovering. Her rehabilitation journey is ongoing, and she still hasn’t regained full feeling in her left hand. “I have to be positive, I spent time on the stroke ward and saw how much worse off I could have been. Stroke is devastating,” she said. “I have a two-year-old and my whole life ahead of me. It breaks my heart that I can’t feel it when I hold my daughter’s hand, but I’m just grateful to be here.” Throughout November, Ms Simmonds and her husband, Luke, will be pounding the pavement as part of Stride4Stroke. They’ve already raised more than $1,000 for the annual fundraiser which encourages Australians to get active to reduce their risk of stroke. Participants set an activity goal to increase their daily ‘moving minutes’ by walking, running, swimming, or cycling.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Lisa Murphy commended Ms Simmonds for her efforts as part of her stroke recovery. She urged all Australians to follow in her footsteps by making their moves count this November. “Research has shown that just 30 minutes of exercise five times a week can reduce your stroke risk by 25 per cent,” Dr Murphy said. “Stride4Stroke is a great starting point to make the changes that can reduce your risk

of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes which are all modifiable risk factors of stroke.” Stride4Stroke runs throughout November. Every dollar raised will assist the Stroke Foundation fight stroke, fund research and support survivors and their families at all stages of recovery. Call-out on cat curfew Wyndham council is calling for feedback on the current cat curfew that aims to ensure cats are not wandering the streets between 10pm and 6am. Wyndham mayor Susan McIntyre said consultation on the cat curfew is listed as an action in the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2021 -2025. “We’d like to know if cat curfews, where owners are asked to restrict their cats to their properties between 10pm and 6am, are meeting the needs of our community,” she said. “This feedback is encouraged from cat owners and the general community. Cats out at night can sometimes be a nuisance to neighbours, prey on indigenous animals and run the risk of encountering feral cats that can spread disease through injuries resulting from fights.” Cr McIntyre said while most Wyndham cat owners were responsible and did the right thing, there was still room for improvement, something council was ready to assist with. “As a Council we provide positive pet ownership education and can direct owners to useful information on how to restrain their cats and information about cat enclosures.” For more information on drop in sessions and to provide feedback before the November 20 deadline, visit: https://theloop.wyndham.vic. gov.au/cat-curfew

your say She’s a woman in a hurry Have on dog parks By Cade Lucas

Don’t be fooled by the name; Point Cook’s Patience Rabai is a woman in a hurry. Despite only emigrating to Australia from Botswana less than a decade ago, the 34 year old entrepreneur has already created and run a number of companies, including her current business, NDIS provider, POWA Care Connections. And in June, Ms Rabai added Afro Aussie Women in Business to the list, an organisation aimed at helping other African women achieve success in business. She explained why such a body was needed. “I do a lot of networking and attend a lot of business networking events. Unfortunately at these events I hardly ever see African women attending them,” said Ms Rabai who quickly identified the reasons behind their absence. “I realised African women are not empowered because they’re not open and confident enough to engage with other people besides other Africans. It’s just a cultural thing because as Africans we’re taught to be too humble and this is a result takes away the confidence to do business the way we should.” Ms Rabai said there other barriers holding back African businesswomen too. “African businesswomen have the skill to perform tasks for businesses, but they lack the education and qualifications that can help them grow their businesses.” To address this, AAWIB has partnered with Melbourne University to allow members into its Blue Nile African Australian Business Masterclass program each year. “They’ll be learning about marketing, accounting, HR and other skills that are needed in order to run a business,” said Ms

African business women all across Australia and from all parts of their home continent too. “On our board the president is from Botswana, the vice president is from Nigeria and our treasurer is from Zimbabwe,” she said. “These issues are from across the continent.” For more information email: info@aawib.com

There is also a business hub in Werribee that provides members with office space. While based in Wyndham for now, Ms Rabai said AAWIB was focussed on helping

Concept designs for proposed dog parks in Hoppers Crossing and Truganina are now open for feedback. The off-lead dog parks are proposed for the areas north of the existing tennis club at Cambridge Reserve, Hoppers Crossing and the top northern corner of Alcock Road Reserve, Truganina. Each of the proposed off-leash areas will include, 1.2m high fences, double gate entries, bins and dog bag dispensers, a drink fountain and agility equipment. Both dog parks will also feature trees, landscaping and at least 3,000 square metres of grass, garden bed and gravel surfaces. Cambridge Reserve and Alcock Road Reserve were earmarked for dog off-lead parks in the Wyndham Dog Off-Lead Plan 2022. Wyndham mayor Susan McIntyre said there was increasing demand for dog off-lead spaces as the municipality grew. “We welcome these additional parks, and trust dogs and their pet owners will benefit from enjoying time outside, engaging in physical exercise and socialising,” she said. “It’s important that all dog off-lead users also maintain effective control over their dog at all times, be aware of canine body language that indicates whether your dog is uncomfortable and ensure vaccinations are up to date – these are just some of the enclosed dog park etiquette guidelines.” For more information and to provide your feedback by 27 November, visit theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au/two-newdog-leash-areas-are-planned-wyndham

Crafty Werribee festival

Teens charged

Despite gearing up for its 43rd edition, this year’s Werribee Craft Festival promises to have plenty of new attractions on offer when it takes place at the Encore Events Centre on November 10 and 11. “We’ve got over 20 new stalls,” said festival secretary Chris Mitchell of the 2023 event which will feature 80 in total. Even if that means three-quarters will be festival regulars, Ms Mitchell said not all of them will look the same. “People always put their own twist on things, so they might be the same stalls as previous years but they’re doing something different. “We try to always make sure we have a vari-

ety and not too much of the one thing.” The festival features all the usual craft fare such as woodwork, pottery, crockery and candles, while also catering for children. “We’ve got free kids craft activities, a facepainter and roaming characters,” said Ms Mitchell. And if you’re feeling hungry? “Our devonshire teas are always a hit,” she said. The festival is free and Ms Mitchell encouraged patrons to come both on Friday night and all day Saturday. Nazi salute A Wyndham man is expected to become the first person charged under a new Victorian law outlawing Nazi salutes and symbols. Detectives interviewed the 24-year-old following allegations the banned gesture was performed outside a Melbourne court on October 27. The Point Cook man is expected to be charged on summons for breaching the new law which came into effect late last month, police say. “Police are taking a zero-tolerance approach to any breach on the prohibition on performing Nazi salutes or displaying Nazi symbols in public,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

The Woody Meadow being planted at the Werribee Recycled Water Plant last month. (supplied)

Growing a greener west Greater Western Water’s (GWW) Werribee Recycled Water Plant is the latest site to benefit from the beauty of a woody meadows planting, as part of a University of Melbourne urban greening research project. Woody Meadows is a cost-effective method of public planting, using drought-resistant and visually interesting native shrublands. By planting a variety of plants that mimic the natural landscape, woody meadows create vibrant displays that attract biodiverse wildlife and require minimal maintenance. Last month, Australia’s latest woody meadow took root in two specially constructed 27 x 3 metre planter boxes at the Werribee Recycled Water Plant, established with 2,500 plants donated by ecoDynamics.

Lead researcher on the woody meadows project, associate professor Claire Farrell, said the University of Melbourne was excited to be working with GWW on a woody meadow designed with locally indigenous shrub species. “This site is a wonderful opportunity to test how well woody meadows will work in the west to improve the quality of low maintenance public landscapes for people and biodiversity.” GWW chief people officer Louise Meadows said the water corporation was proud to partner with the university to test and demonstrate the success of woody meadows in Melbourne’s west. “We’re committed to increasing green spaces across our region and happy to share our site to help discover new ways of greening the

west,” she said. “This woody meadow is also being watered with recycled water from the plant, demonstrating the value of this climate resilient water source. “We’re always seeking the best outcomes for people and Country, and contributing to this research is an opportunity to help both,” she said. Woody meadows can be used in spaces like train stations, roadsides, small city gardens and residential streetscapes. The research project aims to provide information on plant performance, maintenance approaches and cost estimates to develop guidelines for how to design and install woody meadows across Australia.

When young Will Lord, son of the caretaker at the Point Cook Flying Corps base, embarked on what promised to be the adventure of a lifetime in 1915, his family was thrown into a series of events that prove truth is stranger than fiction. If you’re wondering what these strange events were, you’ll have to join cultural historian Dr Steve Campbell-Wright for his latest talk on the history of RAAF Point Cook Air Force base this Wednesday night. A free online event hosted by Wyndham City Libraries, ‘The Caretaker’s Family – service and sacrifice at RAAF Point Cook during World War I” will be held from 7 to 8pm on Wednesday November 8. A 35 year RAAF veteran turned historian and author, Dr Campbell-Wright is one of the foremost experts on Point Cook’s air force base, having published ‘An Interesting Point: A History of Military Aviation at Point Cook’ in 2014. The talk is open to all adults and while free of charge, bookings are essential. Details: wyndham.vic.gov.au/ whats-on/caretakers-family-raafpoint-cook

Youths go to Canberra Tarneit’s Shuobing Kuang, a Youth Civic Participation Project participant, wrote about her trip to Canberra for Star Weekly. September 11 to 14 saw our adventure to the Australian Capital Territory, fulfilling the last chapter of the 2023 Youth Civic Participation Project activities navigating through the three levels of Australian government. A tour of Parliament House offered a deeper insight into the history of our democracy, meaningful architecture, and provided us with the wonderful opportunity to converse with Joanne Ryan MP for Lalor and Minister for Education Jason Clare regarding the issues important in our community.

Stepping into the beautiful (but strangely neat) city of Canberra, we were greeted with the friendly face of our driver (and unofficial Canberra icon) Adam. Memorable and valuable experiences were created as we explored the National Archives, High Court of Australia, National War Museum, National Museum of Australia, the AEC, Museum of Australian Democracy, National Capital Exhibition and the Royal Australian Mint. Not only were we able to enhance our

knowledge of Australian political history, but also the intersections between history, politics, economics, arts, and culture. I will never forget the loud shrieks of delight within the escape rooms, our unsynchronised cheers of ‘YCPP’, building on top of each other’s questions and ideas, and our surprisingly competitive coin-spotting challenge. Maybe the real treasure was the professional relationships and friends we made along the way.

A zebra was found dead in a shipping crate as a Victorian zoo tried to ferry the creature to another facility. Zoos Victoria has outlined a series of animal welfare investigations across the last financial year in its annual report, tabled in state parliament last week. In one instance, Werribee Open Range Zoo was transferring two female plains zebras to another zoo by ferry. One of the zebras was loaded into a crate and the other on to a trailer, before the pair were driven to the docks. The zebras appeared calm during the process but a loud bang was heard from the crate about 90 minutes after their arrival at the docks. “It is assumed something spooked the zebra, leading to an impact between the zebra and the crate,“ the Zoos Victoria annual report report said. “Staff quickly checked on the zebra and found her lying on her side with a suspected fractured neck. “The force of the impact resulted in a fatal injury, fractured cervical vertebra.“ The agency said the incident highlighted the risk of transferring zebras, with staff at Werribee and other zoos continuing to share information and refine processes. In a separate incident at Melbourne Zoo, a northern saratoga fish was discovered dead about 30cm from the water’s edge six, days after being moved to a new habitat following quarantine. Saratoga are known for jumping out of the water to feed. - AAP

BEHIND THE NEWS

No horsing around in quarantine Twenty-four horses, many of them from overseas, compete in the iconic Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November. The first stop in the lead up to the great race for international competitors is the Werribee International Horse Centre as Jennifer Pittorino discovered.

O

wned and operated by Racing Victoria, the Werribee International Horse Centre (WIHC) is the only approved Post-Arrival Quarantine (PAQ) facility in Melbourne where horses can remain in full training during the Spring Racing Carnival. Racing Victoria general manager of international and racing operations Paul Bloodworth said the multi-million dollar horses arrive in two shipments at the end of September and beginning of October. “One shipment arrived on Grand Final Day, which was the 30th of September,” he said. “This year was slightly different as we had a horse from Hong Kong, and a horse from England arrive on September 16. “One of those was Romantic Warrior, one of the best horses in the world, as he wanted to have a lead up race to the Cox Plate.” Paul said the two shipments enable the horses to either run in the Caulfield Cup and/or the Melbourne Cup. Once the horses arrive from overseas, Paul said there is a strict period in which the horses need to remain in quarantine. “They need to do two weeks’ export in their country of origin,“ he explained. “We have a number of approved pre-export quarantine facilities around the world in Europe, Japan and in Hong Kong, which allows us to do that there.” In addition to quarantining overseas, when the horses arrive in Australia they then have to complete a further two weeks post arrival quarantine before they’re released from the strict bio security measures that are in place for four weeks. This year Racing Victoria has welcomed horses from England, Ireland, France, Hong Kong and Japan. “We have a very broad spectrum of countries around the world,” said Paul. “As long as the country where they’re coming from is an approved country by our government, they can come to Melbourne. “They have to have an approved status by the federal government to allow export from their country to Australia.” As many countries have racing industries, Paul and his team work with animals from across the globe. “In my role I am responsible for enticing trainers and owners to bring their horses to Melbourne for the spring carnival,” he said. “I travel to places like Japan and Europe throughout the year meeting with owners and trainers to discuss bringing their horses to Melbourne for the races.” Paul has worked for Racing Victoria for 16 years, and in his current role since 2018. “That’s what I do throughout the year which ultimately ends up with courses arriving here.” To prepare for his busy season of recruiting, Paul watches as many international races as he can. “I keep long lists of high quality horses that race around the world. “It’s mostly about building the relationships with the trainers and the owners of these horses. That way when there is a horse that is showing potential to be competitive in the races, you are able to reach out to them.” Paul said most trainers are return visitors who have been to Melbourne in previous years and are happy to come back. “Once I have established relationships with trainers they come to us with which horses they think are suitable, rather than me asking them. “It is all about maintaining contact with the trainers throughout the year, by going and seeing them around the middle of the year to start discussing plans for later in the year.” In addition to his main role recruiting horses, at the Werribee facility Paul and his team ensure the connections of each horse have a smooth, enjoyable time in Melbourne.

‘‘

It is quite expensive for owners and trainers to commit to coming to Australia, so we are always very pleased that they re willing to take that plunge and travel here.

“My role here is to make sure all the staff and all the trainers and all the owners are happy with how things are going,” he said. “We help them with logistics around flights and accommodation, race day events and more.” The strict quarantine measures enforced at Werribee ensure Australia’s biosecurity is protected. The horses can’t leave the facility at all for two weeks and all their care, including showing, is done within the compound in which they live. This ensures no exotic diseases escape and infect animals in the wider community. The horses are also required to undergo multiple nasal swabs across the first two weeks. “These are sent off to laboratories for testing, to establish that they don’t have any exotic disease,“ said Paul. “It’s only when all those swabs are back and clear that none of the horses have any exotic

diseases, that the horses are released from post arrival quarantine.” When the horses come out of quarantine they are able to use both the 1700 metre circumference grass track and the 1600 metre inside sand fibre track at Werribee. “They have access to those every day, it’s up to the individual horses or individual trainers how they use the facilities,” said Paul. “Most horses use a mixture of both tracks, they need to move between them depending on the speed of the work that they’re looking to conduct.” Like any other training centre, the horses have designated slots across the three compounds, all of which are in operation at the moment. The three compounds comprise the Newminster compound housing 16 horses across three barns, the Vintage Crop which can house eight horses across two barns and the American compound which can house eight

horses in one large barn. The three compounds operate independently from each other, allowing flexibility around arrivals from different regions without disrupting the quarantine periods of horses in other compounds. “How we train horses is how horses are trained all over the world, they exercise each day to attain a level of fitness which will see them be able to compete in the races. “It is quite expensive for owners and trainers to commit to coming to Australia, so we are always very pleased that they’re willing to take that plunge and travel here. In addition to having a great reputation, Paul said the prize money on offer throughout the Spring Racing Carnival is also a driving factor for many trainers and owners. “Our prize money is fantastic in Melbourne and significantly better than a lot of other jurisdictions in the world,“ he said. “The Melbourne Cup is worth $8 million total prize money, the first prize is worth $4 million, while the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate are worth $5 million in prize money, and $3 million for each prize. “It is very lucrative and well worth their time certainly. “Our races are very prestigious, the Melbourne Cup is iconic in Australia and around the world.” Wednesday, 8 November, 2023 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY 11

Patients have been able to register for MyMedicare since October this year and general practices have been able to sign up for a few months now. It’s worth noting, though, that not all practices have done this yet, so if you go to register you might end up just putting your name down – and someone will be in touch later. That’s fine. MyMedicare is going to end up making a big improvement to our health system – but it’s a gradual process. There’s no hurry. And that’s a good thing.

get the ball rolling. You can do it yourself using your Medicare online account or the Medicare app on your phone. The GP or practice you nominate will then finish it off. Or you can do it in reverse and ask your doctor to start the process the next time you visit. You’ll get a message to finalise it using your Medicare account. Finally, your general practice will have a stock of paper forms and you can do the whole thing the old-fashioned way.

And if you do register, you will still be able to see other GPs and other clinics if you need to. You will never be turned away because you are registered with a different practice. Registered or not, your medical data remains private. And, registered or not, conversations between you and any GP will remain confidential. 12474997-DL50-20

Over the past few months, you might have heard about something called MyMedicare. And if you haven’t, don’t worry, because you’ll likely hear a lot about it as we roll into 2024. So, what is it, and do you need to get involved with it? MyMedicare – and, no, there isn’t a space between the two words – is a nationwide Australian government project aimed at encouraging deeper relationships between people and their doctors. Technically, it’s known as a “voluntary patient registration model”. It encourages people to link up with single GP (or general practice) to ensure that both parties have a deep and detailed understanding of each other. This will lead to better care, because the chosen doctor will have a good understanding of the patient’s situation, medical history and challenges. Under the new model, too, GPs are able to provide extra bulk-billed services, such as longer telehealth consultations, to registered patients, pushing out-of-pocket costs lower. More and more bulk-billed extra services will become available as MyMedicare develops, with these planned to roll out during the next couple of years. All up, MyMedicare is a very good idea, and something experts have been suggesting for a long time. It’s important, though, to understand what it isn’t, as much as what it is. The first thing to remember is that registration isn’t compulsory. It is entirely up to you. And if you choose not to register with a particular doctor or practice you will still be able to go there for treatment and support. That will never change.

Centrals remain undefeated Point Cook Centrals remain undefeated after three rounds of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association season. The Sharks defeated Bellbridge on Saturday to maintain their untarnished record. On day one of the fixture the Sharks put up 249 for Bellbridge to chase, which captain Brett Talbot said he was pleased with. “We had a few good partnerships which helps push the total,” he said. “At times we thought it might have been a bit lower than 200 but our last wicket partnership was about 50 or 60, and that certainly helped us put some runs on the board. “The wicket was pretty flat, it was more batting friendly. “The conditions were hard, it was quite windy and hot so it was a good toss to win and the pitch played really well.” Towards the end of the Sharks batting innings they declared sending in Bellbridge to bat for one over before the close of play. “They’d been feilding for over 70 overs, so we thought we’d take a bit of a punt,” Talbot said. “We thought we were more of a chance to take a wicket than potentially get a few more runs. “So that was the path we went down, unfortunately it didn’t work but if it did, it would have been a stroke of genius.” Speaking before the game, Talbot said he knew it wouldn’t be an easy day in the field for the Sharks. “They’ve got some really good batters in their team and they bat pretty deep,” he said. “We just have to take a couple of wickets early and try to put them under pressure.” On Saturday, things went to plan for the Sharks, with Rahulkumar Patel taking a

Wade Kirkwood (Ljubica Vrankovic)

wicket to put Bellbridge 1-13. Patel took three wickets for the day, as well as Wade Kirkwood and Rahulkumar Patel who also took three wickets. “Kirkwood took over 30 wickets last year and bowls quite a heavy ball,” Talbot said.

Bellbridge were unable to fire throughout the innings, only putting up 183 in the chase. In round two the Sharks played East Coburg and won in a tough battle. “It was an amazing win,” Talbot said. “They won division five last year and they’re

a fantastic team, very well balanced. “To start the season off with a win where it could have gone either way at times, we were very pleased to take the six points.”

SPORT United goes down again in heartbreaking loss Western United suffered a late heartbreak in the A-League men, going down 1-0 to Macarthur FC at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday evening. It was a tight tussle with chances at both ends and strong tackles throughout, but Macarthur were able to take their final opportunity and claim the win deep into stoppage time. Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for Western United to take into a first home match next weekend against Newcastle Jets. John Aloisi made two changes to his starting eleven, both enforced as Jacob Tratt missed out with a hamstring injury and Daniel Penha dropped to the bench to manage some muscle soreness. That saw Kane Vidmar come into the line-up for his first ever senior professional start, while former Macarthur man Michael Ruhs was a starter in the A-League for the first time as a Western United player. Socceroos striker Nikita Rukavytsya made the teamsheet for the first time and took up a

spot on the bench alongside Penha. United started brightly in the contest with Ruhs finding space in behind Macarthur’s defence and winning an early corner. The number nine was involved again when he played a sharp one-two with Ben Garuccio, allowing the left-back to sting the palms of Filip Kurto with a powerful drive. Macarthur carried a threat with the ball and Raphael Borges Rodrigues couldn’t believe he didn’t give his side the lead in the 18th minute. After the hosts broke free on the counter-attack, Borges Rodrigues needed only to tap home unchallenged at the back post but Tom Heward-Belle had other ideas, flinging himself across the goal line and making a stunning pinpoint save. Returning to a wide-right position in Penha’s absence, Lachie Wales was lively and nearly teed up Noah Botic for the opener but Jonathan Aspropotamitis was in the way of the youngster’s side-footed volley. There were plenty of fouls through the middle third of the pitch as both teams looked

to press quickly and win the ball back. Heward-Belle was called into action again to deny Yianni Nicolau just before half-time, ensuring the deadlock remained unbroken at the break. Penha came off the bench for United at half-time and immediately began to connect with his teammates, looking to create chances and link up with Wales and Botic up front. United had more joy going forward in the second half than it did in the first but that came largely without any meaningful chances on goal. The closest the Green and Black came was when Josh Risdon nearly bent a beauty into the top corner, cutting inside onto his left foot and drawing a magnificent save from Kurto. Ulises Davila came on for Macarthur and nearly found a goal within minutes of his arrival, sending a deflected shot bobbling just wide of the right-hand post. United play Newcastle at home next Saturday. (Western United)

Beall returns to United Reigning A-League women goalkeeper of the year Hillary Beall will look to go one better with Western United, making her return on loan from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club Racing Louisville FC. The American was a revelation for Western United in its debut season in the A-League, keeping seven clean sheets to help United to second place on the table and an appearance in the grand final. One of the team’s vice captains last season, Beall received a list of accolades over the course of the campaign A-League player of the month in January and February, A-League save of the year and the Western United player of the season, on top of the league’s best goalkeeper honours. Set for her return to the Green and Black, Beall said she was itching to get back and tend to unfinished business with her teammates. “It was an incredible season we had in our first year. We fell short twice of some hardware, so I think that is definitely something I am coming back for, to win a championship,” she said. “I really enjoyed my time at Western so I am really grateful the club is bringing me back in with the girls. “Obviously the main goal is to win a championship. Coming back though, I now have two years as a pro under my belt and I have found myself and my confidence, so I will bring that to the group.” Western United general manager of soccer Mal Impiombato said Beall’s return was an indicator of United’s growing intent to be competitive and successful in the A-League. “Hillary was the best goalkeeper in the competition last season and we are delighted to have her return and be a key part of our roster again,” he said. “Her accolades and awards spoke to the quality she brought on the pitch and it was important for us to bring that back into our squad as we continue to aim high in the Liberty A-League.” In other Western United news Young Matilda Avaani Prakash will realise her enormous potential at Western United, signing her first professional contract in the A-League Women. Federation Women’s Championship, playing alongside Western United defender Silver Bell Morris in that team. Reaching a long-term goal in signing her first professional contract, Prakash said she is overjoyed to sign for Western United and is anxious to get started in the A-League. “I am very grateful to Western United and can’t wait to play. I have been working very

hard toward this for a number of years now,” she said. “I am super excited and honoured to play alongside the talented players in the team and be guided by Mark. This is only the beginning of my professional football career, and I aim to bring finesse to Australian football and play a game that players and fans both enjoy.”

Cup challenge Western United academy young gun Luka Coveny is set for a memorable moment after being selected in the New Zealand squad for the upcoming FIFA under 17 World Cup held in Indonesia. The talented centre-back has developed significantly since joining United’s Academy in 2023, becoming a mainstay in the heart of defence for the under 21’s side. Coached by his father Vaughan, Luka Coveny will hope to continue following in his footsteps with the Kiwi icon having made 64 appearances and scored 30 goals for the All Whites. A tall and physically dominant defender, Coveny excels in aerial duels and one-on-one defending while also demonstrating a strong ball-playing ability to help his side build up from the back. Western United academy director Anthony Frost said Coveny’s work ethic and improvement was reflected in this landmark moment in his young career. “We are thrilled for Luka to be given this opportunity and immensely proud of the work that he has put in to earn this chance,” he said. “Since joining our academy, Luka has consistently demonstrated his willingness to learn and improve each day and has been a key part of our senior academy set up. “The opportunity to play at a World Cup does not come around every day, and we are excited for Luka to enjoy the experience of this tournament and use it to continue furthering himself on and off the pitch.” New Zealand have been drawn into a difficult Group F in the tournament alongside European powerhouse Germany and two sides from the Americas in Mexico and Venezuela. The 24-team tournament kicks off on Friday 10 November AEDT, with New Zealand’s first match coming against Venezuela. The side will be out to earn a top-two finish in the group to guarantee progression to the Round of 16, while the best four third-placed teams will also secure qualification.
