Waste collection services Hobsons Bay City Council would like to thank residents, community organisations, sporting clubs and businesses for their patience as waste services were restored to normal collection cycles. For safety, bin collections were delayed in Hobsons Bay and in other Council areas throughout Australia, after waste management service provider Cleanaway voluntarily grounded their fleet nationwide following an accident that resulted in two fatalities in South Australia. Cleanaway collects approximately 13,000 bins per day for Council. Along with the Council teams, they worked hard to keep the community informed and to catch up on two days without waste services with a reduced number of collection vehicles.
Western trails consultation At 12pm on Sunday 14 September you have a chance to assist with the planning for the West Trails project. West Trails is working with local governments in the western metropolitan region to review the shared regional trails. These are all the on-road or off-road bicycle and pedestrian trails. The finished plan will provide crossborder strategic direction for planning the network. If you’re interested in discussing your experiences and how the trails can be improved, come down to Commonwealth Reserve for a drop-in session between 12pm and 2pm.

ANCC park keepers Our ‘park keepers’ from Altona North Children’s Centre have been rewarded for their efforts with a rubbish bin installed at Irwin Reserve. After several outings to the park, the children were surprised by how much rubbish they found and no bin in sight. With the support of their educators, they wrote a letter to Council requesting a bin for the reserve. The children called themselves the ‘park keepers’ and continued to visit the park armed with gloves and rubbish bags. Well done to all the children involved. It shows a great commitment to keeping our parks clean and responsible community behaviour.

Hospital data doesn’t add up Statewide elective surgery waiting lists are at their lowest level in four years partly because of the key role played by Footscray’s Western Hospital, according to Health Minister David Davis. But Western Health says discrepancies have emerged in the way the government has compiled waiting lists. Mr Davis said the Western Hospital had played a key role in the decline with waiting lists dropping by 520 patients, from 2033 at the end of June last year to 1513 by June 30. He said the hospital provided surgery for 3755 elective patients in the 12 months to the end of June – 108 more than the same period in 2012-13. But Western Health’s own performance report shows 16 fewer patients received elective surgery at the Western Hospital to the end of June, compared to the previous 12 months. Western Health stakeholder and public affairs director Cathy Sommerville said differences in waiting list figures reported by the Health Department were the result of a difference in timing of data collection and methods. “There are a number of different ways in which elective surgery waiting lists are able to be counted and this has led to a variation in this instance,” Ms Sommerville said. Western Health figures show that at the end of June, an additional 1137 patients had received elective surgery at Williamstown
Hospital, compared to the previous 12 months. “With the opening of a fourth theatre at Williamstown Hospital in late 2013, Western Health now conducts a substantial proportion of its elective surgery at that campus, freeing up Western Hospital for more emergency surgery and a smaller number of highly complex elective surgery cases,” Ms Sommerville said.

At Sunshine Hospital, an extra 437 patients received surgery last financial year compared to the previous 12 months. But Williamstown Labor MP Wade Noonan said hospital waiting lists were worse now than they were under the previous government. “It seems the Napthine government has become so desperate they’re prepared to boast about bad news,” Mr Noonan said. “There are 1513 patients on the [Western Hospital] elective surgery waiting list – 344 more than under Labor – but apparently that’s good news according to the Liberals. “This is just a cheap exercise in political spin that does nothing to help people waiting in pain for surgery.”

The art of tag removal A series of street art projects have been unveiled as part of Maribyrnong council’s fight against illegal tagging. Under the council’s $60,000 Streetworks program, eight street artworks have been created across Footscray, Seddon and Yarraville. The council spends $130,000 a year removing illegal tagging and hopes creating large-scale artworks in key graffiti hotspots will help cut the clean-up bill. Artists including Heesco, Kerrie Polliness, Daniela Rodriguez and Brett Ashby have created street art ranging from photographic montages inspired by the local area to
“paste up” tree-inspired lanterns and painted walls. Locations include bridges, shop walls, underpasses and street corners chosen as sites that have attracted graffiti. Mayor Grant Miles said Streetworks was running in addition to ongoing graffiti removal programs. “Graffiti makes our streets look terrible and is a visual blight,” he said. “The Streetworks project will create durable visual art in the street, animate our local spaces and help deter graffitists.” Benjamin Millar

Greens drive truck issue By Benjamin Millar Improving public transport and taking trucks off inner-west residential streets are at the top of the Greens’ platform ahead of November’s state election. Footscray candidate Rod Swift and Williamstown hopeful Simon Crawford are contesting the election with a wishlist that includes more trains and fewer port trucks. Mr Crawford said the 21,000 trucks travelling through the streets of Yarraville and Seddon each day were polluting the air, clogging up streets and making it dangerous for residents.
“When I’m out on the streets talking to people this is the most common issue raised, especially from families concerned about the impact of carcinogenic diesel exhaust.” The West Footscray resident, 32, said Liberal and Labor governments had neglected the west. “Labor had 10 years to fix the truck problem but did not remove one single truck from our streets. And despite the Liberal Party’s election commitment to not neglect the west, they’ve done nothing.” The Greens support Labor’s pledge for a Westgate truck ramp bypass and will push for more freight to be moved onto rail.
Mr Swift said investment was urgently needed to bring services up to scratch in and around Footscray. “A Footscray to Docklands tram is our toppriority public transport project for the area,’’ he said. ‘‘It will take 1800 cars off our roads, bring business and jobs to Footscray, and clean up our air.” The Greens have also called for the redevelopment and expansion of Footscray Hospital’s emergency and in-patient buildings, reversal of TAFE funding cuts and a boost to trains services of up to 50 per cent.
Both major parties are pitching to western suburbs voters ahead of the November 29 state election by accusing the other of neglecting the west. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews told Star Weekly the government had overlooked the western suburbs while in power, a claim denied by western suburbs Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury. Mr Andrews said the government had failed to focus on the growing needs of the west. “We’ve got the highest unemployment on the mainland, we’ve got hospitals in crisis, we’ve got just a fraction of what’s needed in terms of upgrading our schools, and our TAFE system has been gutted,” he said. According to Mr Elsbury, only the Liberal Party is committed to the future of the western suburbs. He pointed to Liberal funding for an intensive care unit at Sunshine Hospital and removal of the St Albans level crossing as key government commitments. A state government spokesman said the Coalition had invested more in projects that would benefit the western area than Labor did in 11 years. Mr Andrews rejected the claim, arguing Labor had learnt from its time in opposition and took nothing for granted. “We’re going to continue to roll out good strong policies so families across Melbourne’s west have a real choice,” he said. When Annie’s family began to fall apart, it appeared nobody could help. Well-meaning friends would tell her to kick her drug-addicted adult daughter out of the house, unable to understand why she would allow such an impact on the home. The Maribyrnong mother of four says nobody but a parent in the same situation could understand what her family was going through. “Life was a bit chaotic and we weren’t coping at all,” she says. Annie credits support service Family Drug Support (FDS) with saving her family and has welcomed its moves to set up a western suburbs support group. She and her husband have spent 18 months making a fortnightly round trip to Glen Waverley to access the service and believe a Footscray-based support group will be a major benefit to families touched by drug addiction. Annie’s daughter remains an ice user, but the relief of talking about the challenges has lifted a massive burden off the family. Family Drug Support project officer Michael Miller says the group will help people put boundaries around a person’s drug use, particularly in situations where there are younger siblings. “We have a 24/7 support line as well,” Mr Miller said. FDS is also running a series of three community forums to deliver information and support for families. The forums will be held at Western Health Drug Health Services, 3-7 Eleanor Street, Footscray, from 6pm on Thursdays from September 18. Fortnightly support groups will start October 9. Footscray in finer focus By Benjamin Millar A film challenging negative stereotypes about Footscray has nabbed the top award at this year’s Bayside Film Festival. Footscray City College year 9 students Liam Ta, Declan O’Rourke, Dominic O’Day and Hamish Hobson won the ‘Best Film’ award for My Footscray, a documentary contrasting prejudice against Footscray with the positive experiences of locals such as Bob Murphy, a veteran of the Western Bulldogs AFL team. Hobson said the film, which opens with a stream of people revealing negative associations
with Footscray, helps counter views held by people living outside the area. “We thought we could show people what it was really like,” Hobson said. O’Rourke said they wanted to include a broad range of views and experiences in the film. “We asked a lot of people to be involved, including those whose views we thought countered the things said by all of the people at the start of the film.” Ta said the experience was a lot of fun and had given the group a taste for film-making. Footscray City College students collected four Bayside Film Festival awards in
all, including ‘Best Narrative’ for Lost in the Music. This film was directed by year 9 students and keen musicians Reuben Cumming, Angus Glover, Angus Ingram and Ennis Kelly. It explores choosing music as a career through interviews with local musicians Steve Purcell, David Jones, Rebecca Barnard and Jordie Lane. At least two shots were fired at an Altona North home in a drive-by shooting last Wednesday morning. Police say the shooter, believed to have been on a motorbike, fired two shots at a house in Angus Avenue about 3am. One bullet took out the rear window of a vehicle parked in the driveway. The second shattered a small window in the garage door. Detective Senior Constable Matt Lewis, of the Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit, said three men were home at the time of the shooting but no one was injured. He said the shooting was not believed to be linked to the Chaouk and Haddara families, whose members have been connected to previous shootings nearby. “There’s nothing to suggest that there’s links to any of the Lebanese organised families,” Senior Constable Lewis said. “At 3am, an unknown offender believed to be on a motorbike has discharged two shots into a house on Angus Avenue in Altona North. “We’re appealing for anyone who may have seen or heard anything to give us a call. We’re trying to determine the reasoning behind it at this stage.” He said the three men living at the address were friends. Ballistics experts removed the car as evidence. Conservation group Friends of Greenwich Bay will hold a flora ID walk and talk along the Newport coast on Sunday, September 14. The grassroots group revegetates and helps care for coastal bushland near the boat ramp at the northern end of the Strand at Newport. As part of celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Landcare, Australia’s largest volunteer movement, the walk will be led by Hobsons Bay ranger Suzette Rodoreda. “Spring is a wonderful time to explore the native vegetation of this area,” she said.

Graduating on the big stage By Lance Jenkinson Kayne Turner is the envy of his Maribyrnong College classmates. The 18-year-old, who is aligned to the Werribee Tigers, arrived for his year 12 studies on Monday morning with one hell of a tale to tell his friends. The talented teenager got to live out a boyhood dream, breaking through the banner at the MCG to play in front of a crowd of almost 80,000 in North Melbourne’s stunning come-from-behind AFL elimination final win over Essendon on Saturday night. “It was unreal,” Turner said moments after the final siren. “You’ve definitely got to pinch yourself to get your feeling back. Out there on the ground was a great feeling.” Turner was drafted by North Melbourne with its last selection in the 2013 AFL rookie draft. It was your classic left-field selection – a player from the bush weighing 67 kilograms wringing wet. Turner had already matched it with the senior footballers in the Ovens and Murray league before impressing with the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup. Now it seems that playing against more experienced and physically stronger players on the hallowed grounds of the AFL is water off a duck’s back for him. “It’s been well documented that he’s at school, but [playing in front of] 80,000 at the MCG, running around next to Paul Chapman, it doesn’t worry him, it doesn’t faze him one bit,” North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said. “That’s what you look for as coach – players who will step up in big moments in big games.” Turner’s aggression on the field belies his slight stature. His run-down tackles are sure
to be a source of continued embarrassment to lackadaisical forwards. He’s not just making up the numbers on the Roos forward line, he’s making a difference – be it presenting on the lead across half-forward, linking up to provide an option for teammates or applying forward pressure. Turner can sniff out a goal, too, having kicked seven majors in his first four AFL games. “Brad doesn’t stress about possessions or anything like that; he just wants us to make sure we do what we need to do as forwards, coming up and ensuring they don’t get [the ball] out of our forward line,” Turner said. He impressed from the day he pulled on the guernsey of the Kangaroos’ VFL affiliate Werribee Tigers, producing an eye-catching performance on a scorching hot day in a VFL practice match against Williamstown. Tigers coach John Lamont liked what he saw from the rookie that day, handing him a senior debut in round one of the home-and-away season. The youngster hasn’t looked back. He is being taught the right way by North Melbourne’s development staff and the Werribee coaches in his first season in the big league. “I owe a fair bit of my development to Jarred Moore, Ben Dyer and Gavin Brown; they’ve been great all year with all of us younger blokes, they really look after us. “JL [Lamont] has great football knowledge and is really good to have down at Werribee.” Turner relishes the chance to learn the trade alongside AFL star Drew Petrie. He was taking note of how Petrie operated in the forward line in the big win over Essendon. Next up for Turner is a prime time Friday night meeting with Geelong under lights at the MCG.
