Childcare jobs, pay to be hit Hobsons Bay council has budgeted $1 million for redundancies as it outsources the management of Altona Meadows and Altona North earlylearning centres to a Perth-based organisation. The not-for-profit Children’s Services Support Unit (CSSU) has been awarded the tender to manage the two centres for five years with a further five-year option. Parents, staff and the Australian Services Union (ASU) oppose the outsourcing, saying it will lead to a 30 per cent cut in wages for staff who keep their jobs. They also believe it will compromise the quality of care for 212 children at the two centres. The centres’ 67 educators are now faced with a choice of taking voluntary redundancies or reapplying for their jobs. Re-employed staff will retain their pay until their current enterprise agreement runs out next year. CSSU’s corporate general manager, Natasha Burns, declined to say if staff wages would decrease under new management. “I’m not prepared to comment on that at this stage,” she said. “We’re still in negotiations so I can’t really say yes or no. “We will meet staff in the coming weeks and possibly we’ll know at that stage what’s happening. “But we’re hoping to keep as many staff as possible to ensure continuity of care.” ASU organiser Martin McDonald said the only thing known about CSSU
was that it currently operated mainly in remote and rural communities, and each service contributed to sponsoring orphanages in Bali. “Profits won’t stay in Victoria,” he said. “The $1 million the council has set aside for redundancies should be used to reinvest in the service. “Staff are shattered and heartbroken as they have put their hearts and souls into the service and have been guaranteed an interview only. If they are successful, they will lose 30 per cent of their income.

“It should be noted that Moonee Valley council has recently opened two new centres [of its own], which brings the total to six.” Hobsons Bay’s community wellbeing director Peter Hunt said the council was currently talking to staff about voluntary redundancies. “There’s an option for staff to pursue that – probably a redundancy in the shorter term – but if staff wish to stay until the end of December they’ll be entitled to redundancy at that time,” he said. “There’s approximately $1 million in the budget that was endorsed by council for payment of redundancies. "That would be full coverage of all staff should they elect not to transfer or if they’re not offered employment at the new provider.”

TROY BARRETT
Big dreams for air rocker Troy Barrett is about to amp up rocking out to heavy metal in the privacy of his lounge room to the next level. He will represent Australia as a wildcard entry at the 20th anniversary of the world air guitar championships in Finland later this month. The Yarraville guitar teacher’s dream of stardom has been on the back burner for years, but things changed on a trip to the US when he watched a video of last year’s winner, Nanami ‘Seven Seas’ Nagura, of Japan. Barrett will perform a prepared air-guitar piece to Whitesnake’s Bad Boys followed by a minute of freestyle to a song of the judges’ choice. The best wildcard entries will progress to the major stage. Esther Lauaki
MAYOR’S MESSAGE We have kicked off August with a strong start. The rainbow flag is flying high on our flag pole at the front of Council’s offices in Footscray in support of ALL members of our diverse community. At our July Council Meeting, we voted to publicly demonstrate our support for marriage equality. We want our community to know that residents from all walks of life and all sexual orientations are welcome with open arms in our great city. We look forward to an inclusive Australia and we proudly stand by the idea of an Australia where all unions are formally recognised and valued. We want to hear from our diverse community on a number of things we have happening in our city. Our Local Laws Review is underway and we want to hear your thoughts on it. The Local Law comes into community life every day, and we want to ensure we meet our community’s expectations when addressing a range of community issues. Whether it be ensuring your safety while walking your dog at the park, or protecting your family from noise caused by nearby construction, our Local Laws protect everyone in our city and we want you to help us fine tune the way we tackle these issues. For more information and to have your say, visit http://maribyrnong.engagementhq.com or www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au. Community feedback is encouraged until early September. Maribyrnong is a thriving city full of prosperous small businesses. Through our economic development initiatives, we strive to keep our shopping local to keep our small businesses on track and staying strong. Through August, Council is presenting Small Business Festival in Maribyrnong and it doesn’t matter if yours is a start up or an established small business, there is plenty of advice and information on offer over a variety of sessions from industry experts.
Footscray Park’s new playspace Calling all children of Maribyrnong! Our community gem, the historic Footscray Park, is getting a new play space and Council needs your ideas for this initial stage. We want to make sure we hit the mark with the most important citizens of this city – our little ones. This is the first stage of community input that will be used to help shape the future design for the play space and associated visitor facilities. Further opportunities for feedback will be available, once a design has been prepared. Log onto http://maribyrnong.engagementhq.com for more information.
Rubbish collection possible delays Council is letting residents know there could be minor delays to waste and recycling bin collections until the end of October, due to traffic impacts caused by essential water and gas mains works. Traffic diversions are in place for Melbourne Water works along Ashley St, Tottenham, as well as AusNet Services gas main works throughout parts of Footscray and Yarraville. Council is putting on extra trucks to minimise any impact on bin collections, but the “knock-on” effect of getting caught in traffic means there is a possibility bins won’t be collected at the usual times. Residents should be assured that even if their bins aren’t emptied at their regular time or day, Council’s waste trucks will collect them the following day.

Armed gang threatens Club Laverton patrons Masked bandits threatened staff and patrons with a firearm during a robbery at Club Laverton on Saturday night. The pokies venue was also robbed in January and was the target of a violent Middle Eastern crime gang last year. Policeman, Leading Senior Constable Paul Turner said three men entered the Aviation Road venue on Saturday night.
“The offenders had their faces covered and threatened staff and patrons with a firearm at the Aviation Road business before making off with cash about 9.10pm,” he said. “No one was injured and the investigation is ongoing.” The trio sped away in a dark-coloured car. Police say children as young as 15 and armed with guns and machetes are behind
three separate spates of violent armed robberies on gaming venues in Melbourne’s north west. One gang is believed responsible for 15 robberies between December 7 and March 7 at Laverton, St Albans, Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, Keilor, Brunswick and Epping. On January 20 at 8.25pm, three robbers armed with a gun and a machete stormed
Club Laverton, threatening staff and patrons before fleeing with cash. It is not clear if Saturday’s incident was linked. On June 8 last year, Club Laverton was held up by a Middle Eastern crime gang. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Goya Dmytryshchak

Trial to keep on truckin’ A food-truck trial at Seaworks in Williamstown has been extended until the end of August after drawing up to 600 people each Friday night in July. Last Friday, even before trucks started serving at 5pm, people were steadily trickling in from outside Hobsons Bay. A Ringwood resident said she followed food-truck festivals, while a St Kilda resident said he was catching up with his sister from the west so they were trying the Seaworks trucks. Rosanna Dias from Point Cook said she was in a nearby park with her daughter so decided to check it out. “If it’s a regular thing we probably will come every Friday for sure,” she said.
The trial was initially meant to be for Fridays in July with five trucks and a cart – La Revolucion, Senor Churro, White Guy Cooks Thai, Toasta, Smokin’ Barrys and the Brulee Cart. The Pirates Tavern – a small non-food pub behind Seaworks – has changed its opening hours from 6pm to 5pm to complement the food trucks. Toasta vendor Rebecca Feingold said people were travelling some distance to enjoy the Seaworks trucks. “We’re all pretty overwhelmed with how well it’s been going – it’s really fantastic,” she said. Last Friday, four new vendors were on hand – Jay’s Yogurt, Greek Street Food, Round the Way bagel burgers and Hawaiian Grill.

Seaworks executive officer Pauline Hobbs, who is preparing a report on the trial for Hobsons Bay council, said many families were attending. “We’ve been doing some research and the big thing is the food – the quality and the selection of food – and the atmosphere,” she said. “They are really loving the atmosphere.” Williamstown Chamber of Commerce president Laura Nardo said traders would prefer people supported bricks and mortar businesses that struggled to survive, especially during winter. Ms Hobbs said about 70 per cent of people interviewed said they were coming to Williamstown specifically for the food trucks and wouldn’t have otherwise dined in Williamstown.

A trial offering three months of free parking at Nelson Place, Williamstown, started this week. The Hobsons Bay council trial is aimed at helping struggling businesses with free parking from Monday to Thursday between Thompson and Pasco streets, and in Syme Street. Williamstown Chamber of Commerce (WCC) president Laura Nardo said the successful food truck trial at Seaworks in Nelson Place had shown the value of free parking while bricks-andmortar businesses struggled for customers. The food truck attracted as many as 600 people each Friday night during July, and will now continue this month. “I think it’s important to note two things,” Ms Nardo said. “Firstly, parking behind Seaworks is free of charge, and it would not be surprising to find that many people would be making use of that free parking while visiting the food vans. “Secondly, the WCC believes there are many issues deterring people from visiting Nelson Place and Williamstown’s waterfront … and parking fees are only one of the problems, but it’s the one that is most easily tackled.” Hobsons Bay councillor Angela Altair said an action plan was also being developed for Nelson Place. “Offering a free parking trial is not the sole solution … we’re using this opportunity to help businesses revitalise their business and marketing plans,” she said. The council agreed to the trial on condition that five traders provide confidential financial data for comparative purposes. More than five came forward.

False start for Epping opening By Esther Lauaki and Lexi Cottee Melbourne’s fresh food and flower hub is finally set to move, more than a decade after the government decided it was a good idea. The wholesale fruit and vegetable market began vacating its 35-hectare Footscray Road site last month and will reopen at the new 70-hectare Epping site on August 31. The $600 million new market was scheduled to open on Monday, but it will be delayed until the end of this month while vendors complete their stall fit-outs. The move will bring a much-needed
economic fillip to Melbourne’s north with 600 on-site businesses and another 3000 indirectly using the new market. The state government announced the new opening date last Wednesday after a meeting with the Melbourne Market Authority (MMA) and representatives of the wholesalers association Fresh State. According to MMA chief executive officer Mark Maskiell, the meeting was at the request of Fresh State, which had put forward a “compelling case” to the authority to give the market community more time to prepare for the move to Epping.
A statement from the Premier’s office said the MMA advised the state government that to ensure the market’s success at its new Epping site, trading should be delayed until August 31. “While the new market site has the necessary infrastructure and occupational health and safety standards in place for an August 3 opening, a small number of market tenants have been unable to complete their store fit-outs in time for Monday’s scheduled opening,” the statement read. It said the MMA had advised that about 20 per cent of tenants were in this situation,
with the remaining 80 per cent ready to start trading. But Victorian Vegetable Growers Association president David Wallace said as little as 13 per cent of businesses were ready to begin trading. “Only 17 stores out of 130 were ready to go,” he said. “A lot of people still haven’t got their parking allocation or insurance organised. At least common sense has now prevailed.” Trading will continue at the Footscray Road site until the end of the month. It is not yet known what will replace the market at the Footscray Road site.
Ngardarb Francine Riches credits her indigenous upbringing, a love of community, her faith and her grandfather for the woman she has become. Ms Riches, of Maribyrnong, was inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women earlier this year for her extensive community work, particularly with indigenous people. Nominations opened last week for the next round of inductees to the honour roll, which recognises the achievements and contributions of Victoria’s most remarkable women. One of Ms Riches’ greatest role models was her grandfather. “He was a great leader who led by example through service to others,” she said. Ms Riches is a respected artist and bases much of her community work around the arts. “My arts group is a way of crossing borders,” she said. “We [indigenous people] are stereotyped and we need to move away from
this negativity and make something positive through our work.” She and husband Tony have set up indigenous programs through their church in Footscray and often visit the country to reconnect with their roots. “We’re communal people and because of the stolen generation we’ve lost some of that,” she said. “I was raised traditionally by my grandfather. With my work in the community I try to get people to speak the language and I’ve seen a real increase in people using the language and learning the old ways.” Other inductees to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women this year include family violence campaigner Rosie Batty and former Labor MP the late Lynne Kosky. Nominations close on August 21. Esther Lauaki

Win in ‘brutality’ appeal
Pay catch-up for cleaners
(Pat Scala/The Age)
By Goya Dmytryshchak An Ethiopian man who alleges he was a victim of police brutality and racism six years ago in Williamstown has won an appeal to have the matter referred to the state’s anti-corruption body. Nassir Bare said that in 2009, when he was 17, police intercepted a car he was in and officers allegedly bashed, capsicum-sprayed and racially abused him before taking him to a house where his head was held under water. Mr Bare complained to the Office of Police Integrity (OPI) in 2010, but it decided not to investigate the allegations and referred the complaint to police to investigate. Mr Bare sought a judicial review in the Supreme Court, but his case was dismissed in 2013. Last week, the Court of Appeal overturned that decision and ordered the matter be sent to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission, which has replaced the OPI. It was a 2-1 majority decision, with Justices Pamela Tate and Joseph Santamaria allowing the appeal and Chief Justice Marilyn Warren saying she would have dismissed it. The complaint stems from an incident on February 16, 2009, with Mr Bare saying police stopped a car in which he was travelling. “When he got out of the car, he alleged that a police officer pushed him up against the vehicle, handcuffed him and then kicked his legs out from under him,” the appeal judges said. “The appellant further claimed that, as he lay on the ground, the officer pushed his head to the ground so that his chin struck the gutter. “The officer then grabbed him by the hair and repeatedly pushed his head into the gutter and four of five of his teeth were chipped. His jaw was cut, which resulted in scarring. The officer
NASSIR BARE
sprayed him in the face with OC [capsicum] spray several times. “During the alleged assault, the appellant claimed that the officer said words to the effect: ‘You black people think you can come to this country and steal cars. We give you a second chance and you come and steal cars’. “The appellant complained that he was taken to a nearby house and the officers held his head under water for a long period.”
NEWS
Youth law advocacy and human rights officer Tiffany Overall said it was a landmark appeal decision, but it did not find there was an automatic right to independent investigation of serious complaints against police. “We now call on the Victorian government to carefully consider this decision and put in place the mechanisms and resources required to ensure all complaints of police misconduct are independently investigated,” she said.
Cleaners at several Myer stores will take home more in their weekly pay after the Fair Work Ombudsman found they had been collectively short-changed $6300 in less than a month. Fair Work ruled last week that Prestonbased contractor A&K Saana Services, which was sub-contracted to clean Myer stores at Highpoint and Altona, underpaid two workers and misclassified a number of other staff. The underpayments were discovered after Fair Work inspectors made an unannounced site visit to one of the stores at 6am late last year. Two cleaners were each earning $17 an hour, regardless of the hours and days they worked. Both should have been on at least $22.51. Inspectors also identified that nine staff had been short-changed amounts ranging from $225 to $1009 for the pay period May 4-31 this year. They were underpaid their minimum hourly rate, minimum four-hour engagement period, broken shift allowances, penalty rates for early and late shifts, overtime rates and penalties for weekend and public holiday work. As a result of the contraventions, A&K director Admir Kolakovic entered into an enforceable undertaking with the Fair Work ombudsman to ensure compliance with workplace laws. Freed from hard choices
Info night on truck curfews
By Esther Lauaki Tough economic times are forcing more Victorians to choose between heating or eating this winter. Single dad Tom, who didn’t want to reveal his surname, volunteers at Food Bank Yarraville and receives food assistance through the charity. “I’ve volunteered for about five years, first with Wingate Community Centre and now with Food Bank Yarraville,” he said. “I used to drive a delivery van for a warehouse but got laid off two years ago. Being a single parent of a nine-year-old, the weekly shop [can set you back a lot of money]. They let me do my weekly grocery shopping at the Food Bank and it really helps. “These days, especially being a single parent, you have to work – and if you don’t, then you have to make sacrifices for your family.” He said the assistance from Food Bank was important. “It means we can get a bit of meat and fresh produce each week to get by.” Food Bank’s Warm Up Winter appeal is now running in a bid to raise $150,000 to help up to 6000 families in need. Food Bank Yarraville spokeswoman Mikaela Figgis said the types of people using the service had changed in recent years. “We used to get a large proportion of homeless people or people with mental health issues,” she said. “But now we get mostly low-income or single-parent families. “There’s been a shift in the demographic that’s struggling to make ends meet and asking for help. “Working professionals are the highestgrowing segment of people requiring

and is seeking support to raise funds for the 8600 Victorians currently going unassisted.” A $25 donation can feed a family of four for a week, Ms Figgis said. For more information and to donate, visit www.foodbankvictoria.org.au
VicRoads may have a tough sell on its hands at two community information sessions in Footscray this week on the effectiveness of truck curfews in Melbourne’s inner west. The sessions come in the wake of fresh calls for stricter truck curfews following the latest in a series of over-height-limittruck collisions with Napier Street rail bridge. VicRoads, Maribyrnong City Council, EPA Victoria and the Department of Health and Human Services will host two sessions – one tonight and one on Saturday – when residents can view the results of the recent inner-west truck count and hear about the impact of the additional curfews on Somerville Road and Moore Street. VicRoads metro north-west regional director Vince Punaro said the sessions would show the progress made in reducing truck traffic in Footscray and Yarraville. He said traffic counts since the start of the new curfews in January showed a 75 per cent reduction in trucks on Somerville Road in school times and 41 per cent fewer on Moore Street at night. “These curfews are making a real difference and improving the quality of life in the inner west,” he said. The information sessions will be at VicRoads, in the State Trustees building, 1 McNab Avenue, Footscray, from 4-7pm tonight and at Maribyrnong Town Hall from 10am-noon on Saturday. Esther Lauaki

A matter of life and death A cup of tea and a chat about death are coming to a riverside Footscray cafe. Writer Peta Murray is organising a ‘Death Cafe’ at Happy River Cafe, inviting people to talk about the taboo topic. Ms Murray said there was no set objective or guest speaker, simply a chance for people to talk about the subject of death. “I think a lot of people would like to talk about this and sometimes it’s easier to start a conversation like this with people you don’t know,” she said. “We need to build our communal death literacy; there’s a misconception that it’s morbid and taboo.” Ms Murray is co-founder and creative director of the not-for-profit arts-and-health organisation, The Groundswell Project.
The Death Cafe coincides with the organisation’s “Dying to Know Day”, an annual day of action dedicated to bringing to life conversations and community actions around death, dying and bereavement. Ms Murray said the Death Cafe movement aligned closely with the organisation’s goals. “It has no agenda. It’s as simple as it sounds: coffee, tea, cake and conversation,” she said. Ms Murray said the type of conversation would depend on what people wished to talk about on the day. The Death Cafe will be held from 2pm on Saturday, August 8. Mum’s mission a winner By Esther Lauaki The founder of a western suburbs mothers’ magazine has been nominated in this year’s AusMumpreneur Awards. The awards, to be held in September, will celebrate and reward mothers in business throughout Victoria. The editor in chief of the Footscray-based Westside MamaMag MamaMag, Sarah Cavalier, is up for ‘Emerging Business of the Year’ and the ‘People’s Choice Award for Making a Difference’. Ms Cavalier said she started the free magazine at an emotionally and financially challenging time in her life. “Not having worked full-time since the kids were born I suddenly found myself without both a husband and a full-time income. I had two small kids to support so a steady income was essential.” Ms Cavalier said the magazine was born from a love for her community and a desire to use her design and advertising expertise. She and her sister, Rebecca Gelsi, launched Westside MamaMag a year ago and it now has a monthly circulation of 5000 throughout Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. “It’s been an amazing ride and I’m thrilled my hard work has paid off,” Ms Cavalier said. “MamaMag has given me the opportunity “MamaMag to meet so many wonderful local people and businesses and I just love being able to give something back to the community. It’s an honor to be recognised for my hard work, with my AusMumpreneur nomination.” Round one voting closes August 7. Vote at www.ausmumpreneur.com/2015peoples-choice-voting. Climate under the microscope What can we do about climate change … and why should we care? These and many more such questions go under the microscope of science at an Environment Victoria Westside forum next week at Footscray Primary School. Local co-ordinator Lance Lessels said the Environment Victoria-affiliated Westside group wants politicians to get serious about climate change. “EV Westside is campaigning across the western suburbs for greater response to climate change and collecting petitions to be presented to federal and state parliaments,” he said. Keynote speaker David Spratt, co-author of Climate Code Red: The Case for Emergency Action, will look at the gap between myth and reality in climate policy-making. Mr Spratt is a regular expert speaker on climate change science and policy. “Australia needs to contribute strong support for addressing climate change,” Mr Lessels said. “We need to show our politicians that Australians are very concerned and want the Australian delegation [to the UN climate change conference in December] to reach meaningful resolutions to tackle climate change.” The forum will be held in the Edwardian Hall at Footscray Primary School, 7-8pm, on August 13. Sailors raise dust, cash By Goya Dmytryshchak Four sailors from Hobsons Bay Yacht Club are heading inland for the 25th Variety Vic Bash, driving from Melbourne to Port Douglas on an endurance test for charity. The Willi Sea Dogs, comprising James Walshe, David Gaylor, Stephen Cheney and Martin Elmslie, will drive a 30-year-old Mercedes on the 10-day journey, starting August 12. Team captain Mr Walshe says it will be an endurance test for both car and occupants. “We’re going inland, exchanging water for dust,” he said. “Ten days with four blokes in one car is going to be fairly testing.” Mr Walshe said the team had raised $10,000 towards its target of $12,000, without any corporate sponsorship. He said many friends and relatives had donated, and they will be closely following the team’s progress via its blog. “This Mercedes has already done 458,000 kilometres, so the challenge of 5500 kilometres to Port Douglas via Cooktown will be observed by many of our donors,” Mr Walshe said. “The original owner of the 1985 Mercedes 280SE was slightly horrified to discover his car was doing a Variety Bash. “However, he calmed down when I explained his car was instrumental in raising almost $10,000 for sick and disadvantaged children.” The team aims to raise $12,000, while Variety’s overall goal is $1.3 million. Eighty-three cars have been entered into this year’s event. Join the Williamstown sailors on the road via their blog at https://varietycar41. wordpress.com
Gillard booked in for library Wyndham council wants to name its newest library after Australia’s first female prime minister. The Julia Gillard Library Tarneit has been given in-principle approval by the council, which is also calling on residents to have their say before the end of the month. Wyndham community development director Kelly Grigsby said the name was chosen to honour Ms Gillard, who, as Australia’s first female prime minister, held the federal seat of Lalor, which takes in Wyndham. Ms Grigsby said the naming also acknowledged Ms Gillard’s ongoing work in education. The library is under construction and expected to open in December, when it will form part of the existing Tarneit Community Centre along Sunset View Boulevard. Ms Grigsby said the council expected to vote on the naming at its September meeting, depending on how quickly it can process responses from the community. If approved, the name will be formally lodged with the Registrar from the Office of Geographic Naming, prior to it coming into effect. Residents have until August 29 to respond to the name plan. They are asked to fill in an online feedback form at http://bit.ly/1OZcAI5, to call 9742 0818 or email governance@ wyndham.vic.gov.au Charlene Macaulay

A lesson on teaching Two western suburbs teachers have returned from Texas after receiving specialist training in how to get students interested in maths and science. Rob Evans, principal of Bayside College’s Altona North campus, and Richard Buckingham, assistant principal at Newport Gardens Primary School, attended the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in Houston for an intensive week-long professional development program. The expenses-paid trip was funded by a grant from ExxonMobil Australia. Mobil’s Altona refinery manager, Andrew Warrell, said it was the seventh year that his
company had supported teachers from local schools. “The teachers return from the academy with renewed confidence and passion to teach maths and science,“ he said. Mr Evans said he was thrilled for his school to be involved. “The training was a fantastic experience and I have brought back new resources and ideas to share with our teachers,” he said. Mr Buckingham said his training would benefit his school’s teachers and students. “The hands-on activities spark student curiosity and are a fun way for students to learn maths and science subjects,” he said.
The Dead Twin revisits the horror genre in a real journey of time and place. (Supplied)
Viewers are in for a night out in unknown realms when The Dead Twin opens next week at Footscray. The Dead Twin is the latest work by accomplished playwright Chi Vu, and features on Footscray Community Arts Centre’s line-up from August 13. The first scene opens in a secret location, revealed by email when tickets are booked. The audience will then walk between scenes as the play progresses. When main character Steve meets Lola, he develops the ability to contact his long-dead twin, who died during war. Steve’s parents made a pact not to talk about the twin, but both of them dream of encountering him again. Vu said The Dead Twin revives the horror
genre in an immersive, cyclical, site-specific performance. “When I was younger, I was terrified of horror. I would never go see them,” she said. “Friends dragged me to a horror film one day and it wasn’t what I expected, and I was hooked. “The horror genre is a good way to talk about horrible things without it being too real. [This] is a metaphor for what twins might go through when they’ve experienced the loss of their sibling. That pain doesn’t actually go away.” The cast comprises artists and performers Deborah Leiser-Moore, Jacques Soddell, Naomi Ota, Davina Wright, Harry Tseng and Daniel Han. After months of intensive “under cover” organisation, plans were announced yesterday for establishment of a major shopping centre with free parking for 1250 cars in Footscray. The development, to cost about £3 million, will establish a modern drive-in multi-business centre in the triangular block with frontages to Barkly Street, Geelong Street and Droop Street. Almost the entire block will be occupied.
The savage increases in telephone and postal charges have brought a reaction from the Labor-controlled Footscray Council. Councillors want to be reimbursed for the use of their telephones on council business. Cr. M. Harris successfully moved at the council meeting on Monday night that the Municipal Association of Victoria be asked to press for legislation to this effect.

Altona-Laverton Mail
Independent candidates and councillors were mauled at Williamstown’s local government polls on the weekend. Voters handed out a crushing blow to the independents – dumping three sitting councillors as Labor romped home. Sitting councillors Ian Thomas (North Ward), Graham Maquire and Fred Thomas (South Ward) now find themselves sidelined after being unceremoniously dumped at the polls.
Residents Protecting the West, which is leading opposition to the State Government plan to build a prison at Laverton North, has hit out at claims by Premier Jeff Kennett that it is merely a “front” for the Labor Party. But group spokesperson Naomi Davidson said the organisation’s sole aim was to ensure the western suburbs were given reasonable treatment. She said its membership included people from different political parties drawn together to try to block the prison.

Good old cauliflower forever
ROHAN CONNOLLY
Have you noticed that cauliflower seems to be the new “it” vegie? Paleo enthusiasts use it as a substitute for mashed potato and fried rice. People are slathering it in coconut oil and baking it whole, or thickly slicing it to make pan-fried cauliflower “steaks”.
SENIOR FOOTBALL WRITER AT THE AGE
And few who watched this year’s MasterChef will forget Billie’s spectacular “cauliflower three ways”. With just the right amount of kick, these chilli cauliflower fritters – from www.taste.com.au – make a delicious winter footy food option, whether you’re vegetarian or not!
FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? RC: Pretty average. I can do a roast and occasionally lash out with something “exotic” like pasta with salmon and capers. FB: What is your signature dish? RC: Roast lamb.
CHILLI CAULIFLOWER FRITTERS 300g cauliflower, cut into small florets 2/3 cup self-raising flour 1tsp chilli powder 1 egg
FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? RC: Entree: Smoked salmon with some sort of accompaniment I’m incapable of saying, spelling or making. Main: Roast lamb. Dessert: Something involving a s***load of strawberries. FB: What is your favourite food? RC: Chocolate. I’m slightly addicted. It’s a love of my life and the curse of my waistline. FB: What is your favourite drink? RC: Coke. See above! FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? RC: Tom Morello (lead guitarist, Rage Against The Machine), John Coleman (former Essendon champion), Trey Parker/Matt Stone (Creators of South Park), Penelope Cruz (do I really need Park to explain that one?) and Jesus Christ. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? RC: Don’t make anything really complicated that involves a lot of ingredients and dishes and utensils unless you have someone else prepared to clean up afterwards.
½ cup iced water Peanut oil, for frying Cook cauliflower in a saucepan of boiling water for five minutes or until just tender. Drain well. Mix together the flour and chilli in a bowl. Make a well in the centre, whisk in the egg and water. Add cauliflower and toss to coat. Pour enough peanut oil into a wok or large saucepan to come one third of the way up the side. Heat oil to 160C. Use tongs to shake off excess batter and transfer cauliflower pieces to the oil. Cook in batches for three minutes or until golden. Use a slotted spoon to transfer pieces to a tray lined with a paper towel. Serve on a bed of endive and drizzle with a blue cheese dressing if desired.
“I don’t know where my ideas come from. I will admit, however, that one key ingredient is caffeine. I get a couple of cups of coffee into me and weird things just start to happen” – Gary Larson, cartoonist.

The downstairs bedroom (or study) has a bathroom/European laundry with enclosed toilet across the way. The family-meals zone (floorboards, bay window) wraps around the kitchen with underbench oven and electric cooktop. It opens to a great deck, with a storage shed nearby. Leased until February 2016, this fine abode is perfect for investing or nesting, and has a split-system and two car parking spaces.
All sparkling new, this single-level townhouse is surprisingly spacious, with a decor in soft-grey and white that bounces around lots of natural light. One bedroom (with wardrobes) is right at the back, with the other two along the entry hall, as are a separate toilet and sleek main bathroom. The large, grey-carpeted main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Honey-toned floorboards warm the L-shaped family-meals area, next to the small but well-formed kitchen, with its waterfall-edged stone breakfast bench, grey glass splashback, pantry cupboard, dishwasher and 900mm underbench oven and gas cooktop. The living room opens to a small, covered timber deck, flanked by timber planter boxes against wide-format bamboo fence screens. A remote-controlled double garage with internal entry is another drawcard. It’s close to Newport lakes, schools and recreation facilities, with Altona Gate shopping centre nearby.

Another living room right at the back opens onto an attractive courtyard with a sail sheltering wooden seating. Within a stroll of shops, train station and Nelson Place, the property also has a gas log fireplace, alarm, downstairs powder room and a double carport.

WILLIAMSTOWN 23 Giffard Street, 3016 Greg Hocking Elly Partners Williamstown: 8387 0000 Natural light is a focal point of this house – whether shining through a bank of windows or diffusing through skylights. Its warmth enhances a beautiful balance of old and new, highlighted by polished parquetry flooring throughout. Flanking the main hallway are two of the three bedrooms, each of which is carpeted and have deep built-in wardrobes. Intricate cornices, light fittings and deep skirts are showcased, along with large shutter windows. At the end of the main hall, the modernity of the house is revealed with an open plan living area. This area includes

a dining room featuring in-built soft close cabinetry with marble finishings and an adjoining living room warmed by a fireplace with marble hearth and rendered wall. Beside this is the hub of the house – the kitchen – where a timber island bench and breakfast bar steal the limelight, along with marble benchtops, a Blanco gas cooktop, Miele oven and dishwasher. With loads of cupboard space, a sliding door pantry, timber splashback and a bank of skylights, the kitchen is sure to impress. Another living room, at the back of the house, features a white-painted,
timber-lined, vaulted ceiling, with exposed joists. The ground floor bathroom again highlights the property’s 21st century touches, with heated towel racks, a marble vanity, tub and deep shower with designer tapware. There is a separate powder room. A narrow staircase leads to the great escape – stretching across the entire first floor, the main bedroom is an opulent domain. It has two dormer windows complete with window seats, a private study, expansive walk-in wardrobe and large tiled en suite with shower, toilet and vanity unit.

External access is via the downstairs living room, where the partially enclosed pergola is flanked by the rumpus room. The low maintenance backyard features established trees and there’s a shed. Hydronic heating, evaporative cooling, an alarm, temperature controlled water system, understair wine storage and electronic gate are extras. Location is also a plus with the Botanic Gardens just across the street and Williamstown beach, station and schools nearby. Eleanor Tabone

Clearly one of Yarraville’s most illustrious Victorians, this beautiful double fronted Hawthorn brick home’s status is even more significant today as it has ever been. The rarity and the refinement of a genuine four bedroom floor-plan featuring two bathrooms highlights the huge appeal of finding such a family friendly residence so close to Yarraville’s village, enhanced by easy commuting options to the CBD. Northern light and freshly polished floorboards complement spectacular living and dining areas that incorporate an open plan kitchen where designer style, stone benches, superb storage and distinctive red splash-backs illustrate exceptional contemporary quality. A sunny rear garden and separate off street parking space deliver outdoor desirability to a stunning local landmark.

Williamstown 74 Parker Street Classic Appeal With Pure Potential So many changes have occurred in Williamstown since this traditional Victorian was last sold - in 1946 - and now the time has arrived for contemporary ideas to be applied to these classical proportions. Currently, three generous bedrooms beneath high ceilings lead to a central living room and a separate kitchen/dining space. To the rear, a bathroom and sky lit laundry conclude a floor-plan that reflects irresistible potential for renovation. A north facing garden adds to the rewarding sense of scope in a location that remains as popular today as it was 69 years ago due to its desirable proximity to primary and secondary schools, the Botanic Gardens, Williamstown Beach station and Nelson Place.

SPORT Jets snubbed for AFL draft combine get drafted out of that.” To be invited to the draft combine, a player must be nominated by at least four AFL clubs. While it is a good indication of interest in a player, it is not a cast-iron guarantee that he will be chosen at the draft. Conversely, for those who are not nominated, Baker stressed it is not the end of the road. “We saw examples last year of guys who didn’t go to the combine, or even to the state combine, and they got drafted,” he said. The nominations for the state combine will be released soon. This is a chance for the second wave of players in the recruiters sights to undergo the pre-draft testing. The selection process is not as stringent, but there still needs to be nominations from AFL clubs for a player to be invited. Despite the Jets’ poor season, Baker believes some of his players have done enough to be considered for the state combine.
In his opinion, Jaycob Hickey, Lachlan Knight, Mitch Norton, Daniel Foley and Liam Carter would be unlucky to miss out. “We had a number of guys, when the national championships were on, who were playing really good footy and they’ve carried that through to now,” Baker said. “They’ve all got chances to say there might be some interest there.” Meanwhile, the Jets came within a whisker of causing the biggest upset of the TAC Cup season, losing 9.7 (61) - 8.7 (55) against Murray Bushrangers at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton on Sunday. The Jets led by 19 points at half-time but could not sustain it as projected top-two draft pick Josh Schache took the game away from them with five of the Bushies’ nine goals. Jets now have a week off before their trip to Sandringham on August 15. Lance Jenkinson
Devils are looking good By Lance Jenkinson Is North Footscray the real deal? The question needs to be taken seriously after the Devils notched a fifth successive win on Saturday, beating over Glenorden by 145 points at Heathdale Oval in division 2 of the Western Region Football League. But the next two weeks will provide a clearer picture of how seriously to take the Devils, as they round out the home-and-away campaign with key finals lead-up games against top-two sides West Footscray and Wyndhamvale. For so long, the second tier appeared to be a two-horse race, but the Devils are positioning to be the third contender. “We locked our finals spot away and we have momentum,” Devils coach Matt Walsh told Star Weekly. “Two huge games ahead will give us a really good test leading into finals.” The Devils have a rare luxury at this late stage of the season of being relatively free of injury. A side that made a large number of additions in the off-season has had plenty of time to gel and will only get stronger as a unit the longer the season goes on. That’s an ominous sign for the rest of the finalists. “With so many new players it was always going to take time,” Walsh said. “The guys are really starting to come together at the right time of the year. “We’re close to having our best team on the park, bar ruckman Tyson Bock who is suspended.” The Devils racked up a cricket score in the 31.16 (202) - 8.9 (57) win over Glenorden. They showcased their attacking riches with 10 individual goalkickers, including six to Lucas Hall, five to Kieran Murphy and four each to best-on-ground Blake Pilkington, Josh van den Berg and Anthony Nicholls. Kaine Williams, the Devils’ leading marksman with 46 goals, kicked only three. “We’re not just reliant on one person,” Walsh said. “It was a really good spread of goalkickers and any one of our forwards can hit the scoreboard at any time, which is a real positive. “There were no real passengers out there. “You need 22 contributors on the day and that’s what wins you finals.” The Devils will host long-time rival West Footscray at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. They are the only side in the competition who they are yet to beat this season. “They’ve had the wood on us – they’ve beaten us twice this year,” Walsh said. “We’re hoping to get one back on our home ground.” West Footscray will also enter the game on the back of a five-game winning run after
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ As
footy finals approach, the white flannelled fools are in pre-season mode. I think the ones in England may be as well, but that’s another story! Werribee Cricket Club started its pre-season training last week under new captain-coach Mitch Johnstone. The club narrowly missed out on becoming a Premier Cricket club last year and has high expectations for the coming season. David Duxson has stepped down from the committee after three years and Graeme Hurn has taken on the role of club treasurer. I would love to hear from other clubs about changes and plans for the 2015-16 season.
■ In
sport there are the absolute crème de la crème moments – a hat-trick in cricket, a winning goal after the siren, a hole in one. In my many years of playing golf, I went close once – within a foot of a hole in one. My mate Merv Hughes takes great delight in telling me he has two holes in one – one he saw, one he didn’t. Bill Kotow, of Werribee Park, can relate to the latter. Bill aced the 15th at Werribee recently, but had no idea. He and his playing partners thought he had gone in the bunker. When there was no ball there they thought they may as well check the hole. There they found Bill’s ball with his trademark Bulldogs emblem on it. Good on you, Bill.
■ The
Werribee Bowls Club has installed a new synthetic-surface green to enhance the surface quality. It was made possible by financial support from local government, with the club contributing the balance. The new carpet is Tiger Turf brand, and its weave gives the playing surface a truer running area. Its first real test occurred last week when the club’s weekly Turkey Triples took place to the plaudits of all players.
■ Great
local footy wins in the VFL to Footscray, Werribee and Williamstown keep finals hope alive. The last-round television match between Werribee and Footscray is shaping as a blockbuster. Werribee announced last week a contract extension for John Lamont until the end of the 2017 season. It’s great to see a former player at the club, who has genuine passion for the jumper, being given a chance to add to the trophy cabinet. John is a 1993 Werribee premiership player so has a special bond with the club, which will hold a ‘50 Greats for 50 Years’ celebration on the night of August 29. Kevin Hillier

a 197-point trouncing of confirmed wooden spooners Sunshine Heights. In division 1, Altona staved off a challenge from lowly Albion to win by seven points and edge closer to a finals berth. Spotswood had a bye and it hurt them in the standings, as the Woodsmen dropped
from second to fourth after wins to Werribee Districts and Hoppers Crossing. In division 3, Parkside had a 51-point win over Laverton in the clash of the Magpies to keep hold of second spot on the ladder. The loss eliminated Laverton from the finals race.

Western Jets will be on the outer for this year’s AFL draft combine. A total of 76 players, including 41 from Victoria and 19 from Vic Metro, have been invited to the important pre-draft testing held over four days at Etihad Stadium in October. But no players from the bottom-of-the-table Jets have been invited. Coach Torin Baker told Star Weekly the writing was on the wall when his players missed out on Big V selection earlier in the year. “The reality is we didn’t have anyone in the Vic Metro team and, generally, most of the players that are invited to the combine are from the national championships, so I suppose I wasn’t too surprised,” he said. “There will always be some kids disappointed and they’re the ones you’ve got to pick up. “It doesn’t mean you’re going to get drafted if you go to the combine. I’ve also seen plenty of players play well in the back half of the year and

Blues break barriers By Lance Jenkinson FC Williamstown will be part of a senior blind football trial competition auspiced by Blind Sports Australia later this year. The Blues held a family day at Gray Reserve on Saturday, with much of the interest around the modified pitch where a blind football exhibition match was taking place. Showcasing the game to members was one of the first steps in the club’s quest to become a member of an inaugural Victorian blind football competition. Blues’ football manager Henrik Nielsen told Star Weekly it was his club’s aim to be accessible to all. “They were looking for clubs who want to host a team, and we put our name up to say we’re more than happy to host one of the senior teams,” he said. “To have a team in the new blind football league would obviously be quite exciting for us. “We’ve tried to build a real family environment down at the club, and we want to support and include people with disabilities.” Blind football is internationally recognised as part of the Paralympics. The game is played outdoors on a futsal-sized pitch, using sideboards and an audible ball to enable players to locate play. The new league is open to men and women over the age of 18, and for both sighted and vision-impaired people. “We’re going to give everyone a go,” Nielsen said. “Everyone will be blindfolded and they’ll get to be able to run around and listen to where the ball is.

“Some of the guys who are normally pretty handy on the soccer pitch, they’ll be the ones who are probably disadvantaged, playing against people with more developed skills when it comes to hearing.” Meanwhile, it was a horrible weekend for Altona Magic in their FFV men’s state league 1 match. The Magic drew 1-1 with Preston Lions, tumbling to fourth after unfavourable results around other grounds. Rubbing further salt into wounds, the Magic are now six points off the pace, after top side Western Suburbs had a big 5-1 win over Altona East Phoenix, leaving Magic’s title hopes in tatters. In state league 2, Yarraville Glory missed out on a chance to go equal top, held to a nil-all draw at home by Geelong. In state league 3, Altona City had a 1-1 draw on the road at Upfield to remain seven points behind ladder-leader Hoppers Crossing, while FC Williamstown’s clash with Whittlesea United was abandoned due to a serious injury. In state league 4, Maribyrnong Greens was knocked off top spot on a goal differential after a 2-2 draw with Surf Coast. Melbourne City is one of five teams remaining in the title hunt after a thrilling 3-2 win over Melton Phoenix. The top five clubs in the division are separated by just two points, with four rounds to go.

Williamstown CYMS took premiership contender Monash Blues to the wire before losing the VAFA Premier C clash by 26 points on Saturday. CYs have been ultra-competitive their first season in the premier ranks, but there is still work to be done to secure a place in the division. They sit just two games clear of the relegation zone with four rounds to go, facing Old Camberwell at Fearon Reserve on Saturday.

Seagulls’ tactics sink Magpies By Lance Jenkinson
Peter Faulks rarely has his colours lowered in the Williamstown defence. (Damjan Janevski)
Eyes on global goals Monique Conti is always in the thick of the action. With a basketball in hand, she can control a game with sublime passing and spot-on shooting. When she isn’t playing basketball, Conti is bursting through an Australia rules football midfield, in hot pursuit, burning a defender with her incredible pace before finding a teammate for a lace-out pass. What makes Conti’s performances even more impressive is that, at just 15 years of age, she’s notching up credits on the big stage. The Keilor resident is a constant figure in the state basketball and women’s football sides. “Basketball came first,” Conti says. “I started playing when I was about five because I just wanted to copy my brother all the time. “I begged my parents to let me play football. At first mum didn’t want me to play, but then she said I could if I ran really fast so that’s what I did.” Conti’s achievements are already ultraimpressive. In basketball, she has represented Victoria at the East Coast Challenge and at the national championships, and she won a School Sport Victoria Sporting Blue award as the best athlete in the state for that particular sport. In Australian rules, she has been a member of School Sport Victoria and School Sport Australia representative sides, and was named in the All-Australian team at the end of this year’s national championships. “I was very surprised to be named in that team because it was an older age group I was playing in,” Conti said. “It was for the under-18s. There were a lot of good players there, and good athletes as well. I just played my own game and got a good result, and I was really happy.” While many athletes in her position would be dreading having to pick just one sport to focus on, Conti already has her long-term plans mapped out. The Maribyrnong College year 10 student
Williamstown played a game of pick your poison in the 32-point win over Collingwood in the Victorian Football League at Burbank Oval on Sunday. With a stark wind advantage to one end, the Seagulls dropped a man back when against the breeze, as most sides would. But each time the extra player was manned up, coach Andy Collins would assign a different player, and sometimes multiples, to the role. If the Magpies kept a close check on Sam Dunell, Peter Faulks would bob up. Restrict Faulks and Leigh Masters assumes the responsibility. Take Masters out of the equation and Scott Clouston becomes the loose man. The Magpies ran out of ideas to negate the tactic and averaged just two goals a quarter with the breeze. The Seagulls led by only four points at three quarter-time, but their defensive work against the wind in quarters one and three set up the victory, with the icing on the cake coming in a seven-goal last quarter. “When you have the one player in that role, you do become a bit predictable and clubs man that player up, so we’ve got a few different options to play behind the ball,” Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon told Star Weekly. “It’s one of the great strengths of our side that a lot of players can play in different positions and it’s a credit to ‘Collo’ [senior coach Andy Collins] and the way he’s been able to develop that among the playing group.” “You tempt the opposition into over-committing guys forward of the ball and then you are able to score a few goals on quick breaks running the ball into the wind.” Mitch Banner is making a habit of producing best-on-ground performances for the Seagulls.
The three-goal, 31-possession domination was his fourth top-ranked game in seven. “It’s been a fair month or so of footy for him,” Dixon said. Banner, a Western Jets product who played 19 AFL games with Port Adelaide from 2009-12, returned home last year after a season with South Fremantle in the WAFL and has not put a foot wrong. A natural ball winner, the 25-year-old has particularly impressed with his ability to work both ways this season. “Finding the ball has always been no dramas for Mitch, but we’ve been really pleased with the way he’s been able to work at both ends of the ground,” Dixon said. “He’s working really hard defensively, clogging up space in the opposition’s forward 50 and taking marks and then getting on his bike and getting his rewards at the other end. “He’s such a damaging kick – two of his goals were from 55 metres.” Anthony Anastasio ran rampant in attack with five goals but it’s not only his finishing skills that are impressing the coaching staff. “It’s also his defensive pressure,” Dixon said. “He’s working up and down the ground and using his assets to good advantage.” The Seagulls’ fifth consecutive win sees them improve to 11-3 and stay in first place on percentage. But they will have a real fight to preserve their place when they host in-form reigning premiers Footscray at Burbank Oval on Sunday. “We’re under no illusions of the size of the challenge,” Dixon said. “They’ll have 18 AFL players in their VFL side, so we know that when teams get to that point they’re really strong. “It might cement a top four spot for us if we win, so we know what’s on the line.”

Keilor’s Monique Conti is this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star. (Damian Visentini
wants to play division 1 college basketball in America and, hopefully, push on to the WNBA. After conquering the basketball world, she wants to return home and compete in the planned Australian Women’s Football League. For her outstanding sporting achievements, Conti is this month’s nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award, which is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly. Conti will receive $1000, donated by Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist in her future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star award recognises young western suburbs’ athletes who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level. To nominate your Don Deeble star, email ltwomey@mmpgroup.com.au. Liam Twomey
