The Ballan man is treasurer of Ballan District Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Club and works with 60 other blokes to restore old machinery, including trucks, tractors and shearing plants. The club is holding its annual swap-meet next weekend so people can meet other like-minded enthusiasts, sell their old machinery and buy pre-loved parts. “Some of the machines we restore are used only for demonstration,” Mr Meadows said. “But others we also use.” The market will open at 7am on Saturday, March 4, at the Ballan racecourse, 285 Racecourse Road. Mine ‘devastation’ feared Environmental activists fear Moorabool farming, health and water could be at risk if a mining exploration licence for a coal project in Bacchus Marsh is renewed. The exploration licence of mining companies Mantle Mining and Exergen for the 154square-kilometre Bacchus Marsh Coal Project is set to expire next month. Mantle Mining confirmed to Star Weekly last week that a renewal application had been lodged. If successful, the “commercial feasibility” of brown coal will be further explored. Recent

testing has revealed that potentially about 1.6 billion tonnes of brown coal could be mined from the site. Moorabool Environment Group president Ben Courtice said his members were concerned about potential health impacts and worried that the town’s water table could be contaminated. “We’re happy if the project expires,” Mr Courtice said. “Coal is last century’s dirty technology and this mine would devastate the local community. “Clean renewable energy has developed to the point where it could supply all our energy needs. Our farms, communities and climate are too precious to continue with coal.”

The group has called on locals to “fight for Moorabool shire” and protest against the mine. Mantle Mining exploration manager Mark Maxwell conceded brown coal was not currently financially viable. “The financial investment in coal exploration has waned in the past two or three years because of the push to renewables,” Mr Maxwell said. “But the resource is there and within the next two or three years we’d like to commence more drilling to define the resource. “I don’t know why people are concerned at this stage … nothing is sort of planned at this stage for further development of the area.”

Greens leader Greg Barber said he was worried Bacchus Marsh would be “turned into the next Latrobe Valley”, citing the infamous 2014 Hazelwood mine fire, which burned for 45 days. “If [the companies] ruled out that Bacchus Marsh would become the next Latrobe Valley … why issue an exploration licence?,” Mr Barber asked. “Why have a company keep investing more into exploration if the ultimate proposal is to not mine there?” Mr Barber said Bacchus Marsh’s employment strength was based on its “clean-green reputation as a food bowl” and not on brown coal.

Centre ‘safe’, police say Woodgrove shopping centre is safe despite a 36 per cent increase in assault charges, police say. Figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal rises in assaults and thefts, with the biggest spike being in correction order breaches in the nine months to September 30 last year, compared with the same period in 2014. Thirty-four assault charges were laid last year, compared with 25 the year before. Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks, of the Melton crime investigation unit, said the centre was safe, but he was concerned by the increase in assaults. “There’s practically been an assault there

once a month, but it could have been that there was one fight and five people have been charged,” Senior Sergeant Jenks said. “The rates are not out of proportion to other places around Melton or Caroline Springs – Woodgrove is a big place and lots of people go there. “While there’s not a tolerable number – we don’t want any – it’s not a dangerous place.” Senior Sergeant Jenks said most assaults were committed by, and against, people known to each other. He said police had ramped up patrols of the centre and were co-ordinating closely with the centre’s security guards and in-house loss prevention officers from larger stores. The collaboration had netted more offences and

offenders as security guards and loss prevention officers familiarised themselves with people wanted by police, he added. In the same nine-month period to September 30, almost 30 charges were issued at Woodgrove for people breaching correction orders, including breaches of bail conditions – up from five the year before . Woodgrove centre manager Greg Balmforth said management met regularly with local police to improve the centre’s safety. “Woodgrove is monitored by a large, professional security team 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and there is an extensive CCTV network throughout the centre, which is constantly reviewed in line with the latest security trends,” Mr Balmforth said.

Bus just the ticket to foodies haven The delicious delights of Bacchus Marsh will be on show during the annual Harvest Festival next month. Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association chairman David Durham says the town is looking forward to hosting foodies from all

over the state next month. This year, two farms – Parwan Valley Mushrooms and Balliang Food and Fibre – have been added to the tourists’ roster. Mr Durham said the annual festival was always a hit because it allowed visitors to see behind the scenes. “On other days, people come in, buy what they need and leave,” he said. “But during the festival, farmers can actually talk to people about what they do and how they do it.”

Bacchus Marsh Hospital’s administrator has assured the community that the hospital has been “transformed” in the past six months amid fresh revelations of there being more baby deaths than first reported. An ABC report last week revealed that a review of a cluster of deaths at Bacchus Marsh Hospital had found seven more babies had died, dating back to 2003. The review, by Professor Euan Wallace, followed an independent investigation last year by the state government into the maternity unit at Bacchus Marsh Hospital between 2013-14. The government’s review found that seven of 11 baby deaths at the hospital may have been avoided. Professor Wallace’s review has yet to be officially released. In response to the ABC report, Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator John Ballard, who was appointed last October after the hospital board was sacked, said Djerriwarrh Health offered the women involved and their families the “most profound and sincere apologies”. “No matter how many times the stories of what happened to women in the care of Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital are repeated, the personal tragedy cannot be diminished,” he said. “Djerriwarrh Health Services has transformed in six months and will continue to evolve to better meet the needs of its rapidly growing and diversifying community. “It is entirely understandable that women and families will have concerns. I urge them to discuss any issues with their specialist obstetrician, midwives or general practitioner to ensure they are confident they will receive the best possible care.” Slater and Gordon, the law firm representing several of the families involved in baby deaths at the hospital, said two families had recently received compensation payouts from the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority. Medical negligence lawyer Anne Shortall said investigations into Bacchus Marsh Hospital should to be widened. “No family should be left wondering why their baby died or why they were born with a disability,” she said. “The families … deserve answers and the Victorian community needs to be reassured that this won’t happen again.”

Way clear for Halletts upgrade By Sumeyya Ilanbey Construction on the long-awaited east-facing ramps and shared pedestrian path along Halletts Way is expected to start later this year with the state and federal governments having committed $12.8 million to the project. The works, which have been stalled for several years, are part of a $38 million Bacchus Marsh Traffic Improvement project. Last week, state and federal MPs convened in Bacchus Marsh to announce the funding package, with the state government committing $2.56 million and the feds $10.24 million.

The funding has been a long time coming for Moorabool council and Bacchus Marsh residents, who have had issues with traffic congestion and safety along Halletts Way. Council chief executive Rob Croxford thanked the governments for the funding. He said he had witnessed safety problems at Halletts Way on a daily basis. “There are mums with their prams, a guy with his dog and a bloke on his bike, and then a bus comes up and takes up one-and-a-quarter lanes,” Mr Croxford said. Victorian Senator Michael Ronaldson, representing the federal government, wouldn’t be drawn on why it had taken so long for

Rob Champion is on a mission to instil in young people a love of gardening and healthy eating – starting with Melton’s foster care children. With colleagues, the Salvation Army chaplain last week started work on a community garden at Westcare Fostercare in Melton South after receiving funding from Melton’s Bunnings Warehouse. Captain Champion hopes the garden will grow into “something big”. “The idea came from my passion for nutrition and making kids appreciate the need for a good diet,” he said. “It’s also really good to get them interested in growing a variety of foods.” He said the community gardeners would start with whatever was in season at the time, but he hoped their raised garden beds would, eventually, become a vibrant space.

Multiple thefts hammer tradies A Bacchus Marsh builder, who had tools valued at $3000 stolen from his ute, says his business never recovered from the financial loss of the theft. Self-employed builder Corrie, who asked that his surname not be revealed, closed his business last year. He said last week that thefts from tradies were a scourge on small businesses in Melton and Moorabool. Similar thefts in the western suburbs are the focus of police operation Tool Safe, which started last week. Tools valued at more than $412,000 were stolen from the Melton area in the 12 months from October 2014 until last September. Three nail guns, a drop saw and a box saw were among the tools stolen from Corrie’s work ute, which was parked at a friend’s property while Corrie was on holiday last April. “I’ve been a builder for 30 years, originally from Western Australia and then I moved to Melbourne,” he said. “I’ve only lived here for two-and-a-half years, and the only time I’ve ever had tools stolen was when I moved to Bacchus Marsh. “I know a whole heap of tradies who have had their stuff stolen in the past year, sometimes from their vehicles. Sometimes the whole trailer with tools in it has been taken.” He said his insurance had only covered tools that were inside his ute, not the tools taken from the trailer. “It annoys me how the thieves just get away

with it. I lost nail guns and a drop saw, and it put so much stress on my small business,” Corrie said. “One of the nail guns was borrowed from someone so I had to replace that one on top of replacing my own tools. Small business really does do it hard when thefts happen.” Tools valued at more than $11 million were stolen statewide in the same period – a significant jump from the $7 million valuation of tools stolen the previous year.

Melton police’s Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said tools stolen from work vehicles and building sites accounted for a large number of the thefts reported in the area. “Tools are very easily on-sold so they’re very attractive to thieves.” He said police would be speaking to tradies and their employers about the best ways to protect tools and equipment as part of Operation Tool Safe. “The inconvenience for an individual when tools vital to their trade are stolen is horrible; it can have a real flow-on effect,” Senior Sergeant Guthrie said. He urged tradies to park their work vehicles in locked garages, if possible; to lock and secure tool boxes that are part of ute trays; and not leave valuables or documents inside vehicles where they can be seen by passersby.

Already water-wise The courtyard at Pentland Primary School is being transformed by the wonders of water. Western Water’s Schools Water Efficiency Program, sponsored by the state government, has been rolled out to the Darley school and is a big bit, according to principal Andrew Harrison. Pupils from prep to grade 2 are given the chance to learn about the importance of saving water and staying hydrated. “We’ve planted a small orchard as a result of the program and been able to put sprinklers in our courtyards,” Mr Harrison said. The three-year program also involves schools

installing data loggers on their water meters that send information to a website, allowing them to monitor water use and detect and fix leaks. Schools are also equipped with curriculum resources to help educate students about efficient water use. Western Water customer and relations manager Greg Holt encouraged more schools to contact them. “This program is a great way to educate our future water-savers and help schools save water and money,” he said. Three children were hospitalised after the car they were in performed a U-turn and was struck by another car at Ballan on Saturday. A female passenger aged in her 40s was also injured. Tripod Farmers in Bacchus Marsh is expecting to receive test results from Victorian health authorities this week to help uncover the source of the salmonella outbreak that prompted a nationwide recall of its pre-packaged salads. The company recalled 30 of its looseleaf salad mixes from supermarket shelves earlier this month after Victoria’s Health Department traced a number of salmonella cases to its products. Health authorities in other states are investigating cases of salmonella to see whether they are linked to the outbreak in Victoria. There have been 208 reported cases of salmonella nationwide since February 5, including 144 probable and nine confirmed cases from Victoria. New South Wales is the only other state with a confirmed case. It also has 14 probable cases. The tally for probable cases elsewhere is: 13 in Queensland, five in Western Australia, 21 in South Australia and one in the ACT. Tripod Farmers managing director Frank Ruffo said the company was focused on the health and safety of consumers, establishing the cause of the problem and fixing it. Almost four years ago, Tonia Dudzik put her hand up for a seat on a Moorabool council long dominated by men. She didn’t believe the community was “adequately represented”; there were no women or young people. “In 2016, females equate to 50.2 per cent of the overall population,” Cr Dudzik said. “Until there are four women on Moorabool council, women will [not] be adequately represented.” Before the 2012 local government elections, Cr Dudzik attended the Victorian Local Governance Association’s GoWomenLG initiative to learn about running in an election. She learnt about councillor duties and elections and felt confident after seeing 200 other women in the room interested in standing for councils.

Rocking out in Burnside The mane thing in Ray Morris’ life for several months has been carving and building a rocking horse. Mr Morris, a Burnside Village resident, has donated the horse to the retirement community’s annual fete, which raises money for the “village community fund”. Fete co-ordinator Graeme Carson is inviting residents to join in the fun of the fete on Sunday, March 20. Mr Carson says money raised at the event will be used for “anything that comes up that we may need”.

MY PLACE Velislav Georgiev is a Bulgarian-born public artist and designer. He spoke to Esther Lauaki about an output that includes more than 30 public works, signs, gates, shelters, even sidewalk art. What is your connection to Moorabool? I came to Australia 36 years ago from Bulgaria. My partner and I bought land in Ballan in 2003 and built our home not long after. Before that we lived in Melbourne. We are both artists and were looking to live, work and trade out of the same place. In Melbourne, you can either live and trade, or live and work out of one place, but you can’t really do all three.

What type of art do you create? I only do commissioned work because it solves the storage dilemma when you trade from home. I create art by order. It’s a creative process. People have a vague idea, and we talk to them and they talk to us, and then we can create something perfect for the space. We respond to the ambient conditions. Your work includes more than 30 public sculptures and artworks. Do you have a favourite? It’s hard to say that I have a favourite because each sculpture is different. I do think the one that was commissioned

How did you become an artist? In 1989 I lost my job as a public servant in the social security department of the government, and I had to work. I started using my skills as a wood carver and started creating commissioned artwork. I started wood carving in Bulgaria after I’d broken my leg, just whittling away at bits of wood … I needed something to do.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a namesake to confirm his love of yum cha. The premises recently occupied by Kenny’s Yum Cha House was previously, and for many years, a rather nondescript noodle shop we never tried. A new family has taken over, headed by dumpling-making dad Kenny, and they’re doing very nice things. I confess to having tried “hokkien noodles” a few weeks before Christmas and being unimpressed. But then a home delivery of some yum cha items – and very good they were – re-sparked my interest. So heading to Ferguson Street with two regular CTS companions, I am filled with hope. But there is cause to be cautious, in terms of optimism. After all, normal expectations for yum cha goodies served in such a humble, corner store setting would normally fall into the realms of cheap, enjoyable, but surely frozen and mass-produced dumplings, and the like. What we enjoy at Kenny’s Yum Cha House is way, way better than that – top-notch yum cha that pretty much matches what you’ll find at any of the storied yum cha places around town. In fact, this place sort of redefines yum cha and how it can work. Yum cha doesn’t have to be Sunday brunch – it can also easily be dinner. Great yum cha doesn’t have to involve trollies – it can just as easily be a la carte. In truth, it can even be argued that ordering as you go is preferable.

Everything we have is good or better: Pan-fried dumplings ($8 for five). Pork dumplings ($5.50 for three). Chive prawn dumplings ($6 for three). Pork ribs in black bean sauce ($5.50). Chicken feet in black bean sauce ($5). Only the last mentioned are in any way less than excellent – they lack a certain spicy zing. As well, as we find that assessing a yum cha joint can, at least partially, be done on the basis of greenery, we order Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce ($12) – and that, too, is lovely. It’s been a rather smashing meal – easy, impromptu and cheap (we pay $16 per person). And on a Monday night in Williamstown!

SPORT Bruised Centrals stock up on leadership material Melton Centrals are looking to build on the momentum of a positive off-season. The Riddell District Football League outfit has moved to its new base at Arnolds Creek and welcomed about 15 new recruits. Melton coach Glenn Hopkins says the club targeted a number of local players and former Centrals in an effort to create a true community feeling. “We’ve recruited really strongly,” he said. “We tried to get as many Melton people back to our club as we could rather than bring guys in from the outside. We’re building a community football club and we need to get local, community players.

“The senior team will have a totally different look to it, as will our reserves.” Leading the list of former Centrals returning is John O’Brien, who has been playing in the Western Region Football League with Albion and was an interleague representative. He will be joined at the Centrals by exciting new talents such as Levi Sands, formerly on the list of AFL club Sydney. Sands has also been a strong contributor in the North East Australian Football League. Matt Gilmore has come to the club from the North Central league, while Shane Fitzgerald is from Western Australia. Melton is coming off a tough RDFL season

in which the club won just two games. Hopkins says he’ll be looking to the new recruits to be leaders as the club attempts to bounce back. “Our captain will be Kane Bullen,” Hopkins said. “He was an excellent leader for us through the tough times of last year. “Having good examples for the young under18s is something we think we needed to add. “We have brought in those good experienced footballers who the kids are going to learn from and grow off. It’s also about having enough good senior players to make the kids earn their spots.” Centrals’ official leadership group will be decided in the coming weeks.

Melton will play practice matches against Central Highlands club Gordon, Port Arlington and North Heidelberg before opening the season against Rockbank on April 9. The game will be a stand-alone fixture on a Saturday night, with Hopkins saying it presents a great opportunity to showcase the club. “We have so many juniors this year; our numbers in that area have really risen,” he said. “We want to encourage those juniors and their parents to come along and watch our footy.” Liam Twomey

50 up, and still in whites By Liam Twomey When it comes to cricket in Melton, few names are more recognisable than Wheelahan. In what was a dominant run between 2008 and 2013, James Wheelahan was a star for Melton Cricket Club and helped the Lions become a dominant force in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association. The gun bowler played in four premierships and one overall championship, the latter with his cousin, Brian Wheelahan. But before the most recent generation of success, it was James’s father, Michael Wheelahan, who helped shape cricket in Melton. After playing for VSDCA clubs Sunshine and Altona and Premier Cricket side Footscray Edgewater, Michael Wheelahan moved to live in Melton in 1975 when he was 25. And his timing couldn’t have been better, as Melton Cricket Club was formed in the same year. He quickly made contact, played in a premiership in his first year at the club and remained at the Lions for the rest of his career. “I bought a house in Melton and wanted to play cricket here,” he explained. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 23, 2016

Michael Wheelahan went on to play in another VTCA premiership before Melton moved to the sub-district in 1985. He pulled on the whites for another five years before retiring in 1990. “The year I retired I used to go and watch the Melton firsts play,” Wheelahan recalls. “One of the blokes said to me, ‘Why don’t you take up umpiring? I started that in 1991.” For 25 years, Wheelahan has had what he describes as the best seat in the house. After getting his umpiring start in the Victorian Metropolitan competition, he was snapped up by the VSDCA and has been a regular fixture standing by the stumps on a Saturday afternoon ever since. Across the two competitions, he has umpired 420 matches. “I’ve umpired 80 games in the Metro and I’m up to 340 in the subbies,” Wheelahan said. “I’ve also done three grand finals and three championship finals. It gives you a buzz doing them, those big games.” For his 50-year commitment to local cricket, Wheelahan has been officially recognised by Cricket Victoria with an award for his services to the game. He said watching his son play in a Melton premiership side was a clear standout. “[James] played in four premierships and a championship,” he said. “He bowled with [Shane] Harwood and also won the 2010-11 bowling average. “Then to see him play in the championship final with my nephew, Brian . . . that’s a real highlight, too.” James is in awe of his father’s accomplishments. “It’s a fantastic achievement to be involved that long,” he said. “The amount of service he has given playing and umpiring is pretty astonishing. He’s got great mates at different cricket clubs, after being at Sunshine, Altona and Footscray as well. “He’s always been a great supporter of mine. That has always been the main highlight, having his support throughout my career.” After raising the bat on his half century, Wheelahan has no plans for retirement just yet. He wants to remain in the best seat in the house for a few more seasons.

Darley is locked in a tight battle in the final round of the Ballarat Cricket Association’s A-grade season. Taking on Golden Point, the Lions were dismissed for 132 after facing 52 of their allotted overs. Richard Moore top-scored for Darley with 24 and Jake Wilkie made 21. In reply, Golden Point moved to 3-51 at stumps. Simon Ogilvie and Saman Jayantha are the not-out batsmen, on four and seven respectively. Opening bowler Heath Pritchard has one wicket for Darley. When play resumes this week, Golden Point will need 82 more runs to win with seven wickets in hand.

Deer Park’s unbeaten streak in the Bowls Victoria pennant competition has come to an end. The Parkers went down to Glenroy by 16 shots at the weekend, ending a run of 11 successive wins. The 79-63 loss is Deer Park’s third of the season. The result serves to add even further intrigue to the forthcoming finals series. The Parkers are 11 points clear on top of the ladder with Glenroy locked in second. The two sides have been the standouts of the competition throughout the season. In other weekend results, Melton smashed Altona Sports, Essendon defeated Werribee, and Altona was too good for Moonee Ponds. Shooting goals at many levels By Liam Twomey There were plenty of signs throughout her early career that Najvada George was destined for the top. In primary school, George made the Victorian netball and basketball sides as a bottom age player before captaining both in her top age year. Now 16, the Hoppers Crossing resident has lost none of her commitment or passion for sport. George has given netball away for the time being to concentrate on basketball. With a more singular focus, she has enjoyed a brilliant 12 months that have included state and national representation. The Box Hill Senior Secondary College student was selected in the under-18 Victorian side for the East Coast Challenge tournament and national championships in Adelaide. She also got her first taste of the green and gold, representing Australia at the Oceania Games in New Zealand. Her efforts helped Australia qualify for this year’s under-17 world championships in Spain. “It has been great to be able to experience a lot of different teams,” George said. “Playing for the state has probably been one of my best experiences because you’re playing against the best kids in Australia. “You make friends and it is a tough week. Playing with the girls is a lot of fun, though. “In the Oceania Games, it was great to be able to see how other countries play. We don’t all play the same style of basketball.” As well as being identified as a rising star at the junior level, George has gained attention from coaches in Australia’s top domestic competition. development squad. The program is seen as a direct pathway into the WNBL. Not surprisingly, that is exactly where George wants to go. “I have really enjoyed being a part of that and I found that I have improved on my game,” she said. “I want to do the best I can. Eventually I want to make the WNBL. It is the highest level you can get to in Australia.” Having helped Australia qualify for the world championships, George is keen to see the process through. She listed being selected for that competition and putting together a strong national championships as two of her main goals for the year. For her outstanding sporting achievements, George has been named as a monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly Weekly. George will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in reaching her sports goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level. MOTOR Italians do it better All of a sudden it makes sense to buy an Italian car. For years Italian cars have been the province of moneyed purists who accept that things such as rust and a failure to start (they call such things idiosyncrasies) are an acceptable compromise for handling that has been developed by passionate enthusiasts who live in places where road maps look like schematics of the upper intestine. But over the past few years Italian carmakers have taken a great leap forward into the present. Alfas don’t rust any more, Fiats no longer demand a workshop visit every month with a new and untraceable malady. Ferraris don’t have to be taken through a 15-minute warm-up routine before movement and Lamborghinis can be driven by people taller than 170 centimetres. And for all of them the prices have become refreshingly competitive. Take the biggest-selling Italian brand of the lot, Fiat. Fiats were relatively common on Australian roads once but slowly petered out and by the early 1980s had disappeared completely. Delivery vans came back two decades later but it wasn’t until 2005 that cars wearing the Fiat brand reappeared. They had a problem however – price. They were unarguably expensive for what were basic little runabouts. In 2012 that changed. Until then Fiat and Alfa Romeo were handled by an independent importer that did the best pricing it could

manage. Then Fiat, which also controlled Alfa Romeo, took over Australian distribution and brought it in-house. Prices tumbled. Suddenly a Fiat 500 went from north of

$20k to south of $15k and it was possible to spot Alfa Giuliettas beyond South Yarra and Prahran. Who can complain when a Giulietta costs less than $30k and a neat little

statement car such as the Fiat 500 can be had for the same price as a Nissan Micra? Alfa sales doubled almost immediately; Fiats went to about seven times their previous levels. But it wasn’t just price; quality control fell into line with industry standards. Rust isn’t a problem any more and Italian cars now start and go just like Holdens and Fords. Oh, they still have their idiosyncrasies, but these days they’re more endearing quirks than embarrassments. It’s the same, but rather more understated, at the pointy end of the market. Ferraris have become genuine propositions. You can take them to work every day and even toss the keys to your PA without too much stress. Between 2000 and 2014 Ferrari sales have doubled and it’s not just because they’re now easily manageable in traffic; it’s also because they no longer cost twice as much as four-bedroom houses. Over the same period Lamborghini sales have tripled, but the standout renaissance is Maserati, going from 55 sales in 2000 to 401 last year. Part of this is aesthetic.
