Violent crimes rise Crimes involving weapons surged by more than 30 per cent in Melton in a year, while the number of young offenders soared by 37 per cent, the latest crime statistics reveal. Crime Statistics Agency data released last Thursday reveals there were 484 weapons and explosives offences in the 12 months to September 30, compared to 371 such offences in the same 12-month period the previous year. The offences included incidents involving the use of knives and potential weapons, such as baseball bats. And while young Melton offenders were only involved in 9.3 per cent of crimes overall, juveniles committed 336 offences – up from 244 in the same period the year before. Meanwhile, Melton’s overall crime rate jumped more than 16 per cent in the statistical reporting period. More than 100 arson offences were reported in Melton in the 12 months of data, with the damage bill exceeding $300,000. While Hume topped the list in the north-west for arson (592) in the 12 months to September 30, Melton was also in the higher orders, with 120 reports. The only municipalities with more arson offences were Wyndham (148) and Brimbank (129). Moorabool recorded a significant jump in arson offences in the same period – a 120 per cent rise, to 55 incidents. Overall crime in Moorabool also increased, by more than 20 per cent, to 2485, including a 19 per cent jump in domestic violence offences. And domestic violence incidents also rose in Melton, with more than 2000 offences recorded – a 10 per cent jump on the year before. Senior Victoria Police and the state government have rejected claims the state is in the midst of a “crime tsunami”. Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said it had been a really challenging year that “stretched” police resources. “Importantly, for this quarter, we are seeing us making an impact on the rate of growth … in terms of carjackings, home invasions, we know the level of concern they create because they involve violence, so particular attention has been given to that this year.” Police Minister Lisa Neville said there had been a slowing down of crime, compared with population growth, across the state. Meanwhile, emergency services want people to be extra vigilant about firebugs this summer, with authorities expecting a bad fire season.

Hard work brings a golden opportunity Chelsea Smith has clocked up hundreds of hours in Sunshine hospital’s in-patient wards. The Lowther Hall graduate began volunteering at the hospital in year 9, and continued throughout high school as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award requirements. To be awarded the gold International Duke of Edinburgh award,16-to-24year-olds must learn a skill, play a sport, volunteer and experience a team adventure somewhere new. Ms Smith, 18, said each week she

would visit the ward chatting to patients. “There was this one lady I went to have a chat with, she wasn’t entirely sane, but we were playing with the soft toys together. “The lady in the bed next to her said to me ‘thank you so much, she hasn’t laughed in weeks’ … even the smallest things you do make a big difference,” Ms Smith said. It would seem the philosophies underpinning the award, such as connecting within community and making a real difference, have been imbued in the young Hillside resident’s outlook. She was one of 73 Victorians to receive the gold award from

the Governor General of Victoria, Linda Dessau, at a dinner earlier this month. The awards dinner recognises the work of students participating at the highest levels of the program, and is a celebration of three years’ hard work by each. The commitments of the award didn’t seem to hinder Ms Smith’s capacity to study, though. She found out last week she was among the top one per cent of VCE students in the state, scoring an ATAR of 99.45. Alexandra Laskie

Thumbs up for snake removal By Sumeyya Ilanbey More than 40 people have used Melton council’s free snake removal service in less than three months. Of the 45 call-outs from September 1 to November 17, snakes were removed on 15 occasions and lizards identified six times, a report presented to last week’s council meeting found. One Brookfield resident had four snakes removed from their property during one call-out.

And as the weather warms up, council officers expect take-up of the service to climb. Watts ward councillor Lara Carli, who called for free snake removal in the municipality earlier this year, said the trial program was a success. “I believe it has benefited our residents, and the feedback I get is a very positive one,” she said. “I’m very happy to see it still continue and I’m also very happy to see it advertised … the Facebook post [about the snake removal program] attracted more than 70,000 people in 24 hours – so you can just see the need for it.”

Earlier this year, councillors voted in favour of a five-month trial of the free service, then extended it to 12 months because of its success. Previously, residents were forced to pay between $150 to $250 for a private service to remove snakes. Cr Carli said she hopes the program will be continued. However, the council report stated that relocating snakes caught by the snake catcher will not significantly reduce the risks to other residents. “Residents need to understand the types

of vegetation and landscaping that provide a suitable habitat for snakes … reducing loose ground cover material, in the form of rubbish, logs, rocks and sheets of tin … will be effective in reducing the risk.” Snake catcher Stewart Gatt said he has removed about 25 snakes from Melton and Moorabool properties recently, one a red-bellied black snake on the back seat of a car. Melton Veterinary Clinic senior nurse Kim Norton said the clinic had treated three pets for snake bites compared with 15 for the same time last year.

When most people were asleep, or struggling to wake up, Hai Pham took a 25-kilometre trip to Southbank to snap photos of the sun rising over the Yarra River. The amateur Caroline Springs photographer captured what many rarely see – a mirror-still river with hot air balloons hovering in the air. The photo was one of 16,120 entries for The Nature Conservancy’s photography competition, winning Mr Pham first place in the urban category. Mr Pham said he wanted to share the beautiful places he’s explored and the things he’s seen with the rest of the world. “When I see something amazing, I want to capture and share it with others, so they can experience what I just have.” While Mr Pham was confident with his entry, he says he never expected to win first prize – a $150 voucher he plans to spend on more photography equipment “to take more

School crossing cash injection By Sumeyya Ilanbey The state government has agreed to pay its fair share in funding school crossing supervisors just days after Melton council announced it could be forced to review the number of existing supervised crossings in the municipality. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan announced on Friday the state government would commit to a 50-50 funding between states and councils from July next year. Melton councillors had unanimously agreed at last week’s council meeting to press the state government for a return to the 50-50 split of funding school crossing supervisors and to

publicise the “significant inequity” that exists in funding the service. Council spent almost $1 million in the last budget to fund the service that was first introduced in 1975 with an agreement the state would fund 66 per cent and councils 33 per cent. The funding split was changed to 50-50 in 1993. But Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said the council had been picking up the bulk of the tab for the past several years, receiving only 15 per cent of state government funding. There are 83 school crossing supervisors

across the municipality, but as the number of crossing supervisors at public schools has increased, the proportion of state government funding continued to decrease. Before the announcement, Mr Tori said the increasing pressure had an unfair impact on the community. “The [financial] risk [of the current model] is that the school crossing supervisor service will become unsustainable in the future,” he said. Municipal Association Victoria interim president Coral Ross said the rate-capped environment had imposed significant budget constraints on councils and that

ratepayers should not be required to fund the shortfall that had been shifted by the state government. “Local government has been caught in a catch for 22 years – increase rates to keep funding this important service as state funding diminishes, or face misdirected community anger if services are cut,” Cr Ross said. Mr Donnellan said a return to a 50-50 funding model would help keep children safe, after some councils across the state threatened to withdraw their funding for the service. “Children are some of our most vulnerable road users and we’re making it safe for them when travelling to and from school,” he said.

Bush tucker at its source Ever wanted to find out about Aboriginal bush tucker? Especially what grows where you are? The new bush food section of Melton Botanic Gardens features contemporary and traditional food plants, and was officially opened earlier this month. Friends of the Melton Botanic Gardens president John Bentley said the group always intended to include a dedicated bush foods section, but plans have been fast-tracked thanks to a re-design of the gardens, some extra funding and the efforts of the work experience team from MatchWorks. The traditional tucker includes roots, grasses, seeds and flowers that were used by Aboriginal communities, while the contemporary section features bush foods that have been used in contemporary cooking from the 1970s. “The role of the botanic gardens is to educate

and undertake scientific studies, be open to the public and have a conversation about plants,” Mr Bentley said. “With this section, we’re educating people about how Aboriginal people used bush foods. “If it weren’t for plants, we wouldn’t exist,” he said. “Everything in the food chain depends on plants.” The $25,000 bush food garden was planted over several months, with 10 people working on its every day. Two men involved in a vigilante-style confrontation that resulted in the murder of a Werribee man have each been sentenced to 18 months’ jail. Edward Hewett and Andrew Lacey were charged with aggravated burglary and intentionally causing injury for their role during the stabbing of Garry Coulson last year. The Supreme Court heard that while Bacchus Marsh man Daniel Parry murdered Mr Coulson, Hewett and Lacey were involved Werribee home invasion and knew Only need bits in &the pieces Parry was armed to withfi a ll baseball bat. About a fortnight later, Parry sent a text to his girlfriend asking if she knew anyone “staunch” to take with him to confront Mr Coulson. “Edward … he can rumble,” she replied. The court heard Hewett tried to organise additional help and asked Lacey to come along to “look scary”. The prosecution summary tendered to court stated Hewett, Lacey and Parry went to Mr Coulson’s home to punish him and cause injury. “Edward Hewett was recruited as back-up bunch to assist,” the summary read. “Andrew Lacey’s role was to keep the girlfriend [of Mr Coulson] out of the way and to keep her calm whilst injury

was intentionally caused by Parry to Coulson. The crown say there would be no need for Lacey to keep her calm if this was just meant to be a nice social chat. “It is an indication that violence was planned and that Lacey understood and agreed to that being the case.” The court heard Lacey admitted to police the original plan involved injuring Mr Coulson, but Hewett said he believed Parry was going to threaten force and not inflict it. Judge Christopher Beale rejected Hewett’s claims. “These were not low-range examples of these offences,” Judge Beale said. “The offending was premeditated. There were three of you involved in this home invasion. “As you well knew, one of your number had a weapon [the baseball bat] and intended to use it. You expected that the victim’s girlfriend would be present, but that did not cause you to desist.” The judge said he believed that Hewett was standing in the doorway of the bedroom when Mr Coulson was stabbed by Parry, but Lacey did not venture past the lounge area. Hewett and Lacey were each sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment, with a minimum of 12 months, and 18-month community corrections orders. They have already served 415 days in pre-sentence detention and are eligible for parole. Parry was last month sentenced to 19 years’ prison after pleading guilty in the Supreme Court to the murder of Mr Coulson. He will be eligible for parole in 2030.

Road risk-takers beware By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton and Moorabool police are warning drivers against flouting the law and taking risks on the roads during the holiday season. Police will be out in force until January 8 as Operation Roadwise gets going around the state, targeting drink and drug driving, seatbelt and mobile phone offences, and speed. Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier of Melton Highway Patrol warned drivers that police will be everywhere, from the main arterial roads to narrow suburban streets. “The prevalence of drug-affected drivers is becoming a concern,” Sergeant Stuhldreier said. “Each unit during the operation will be conducting road-side breath testing – that’s on top of the dedicated booze buses – so every traffic and general duties police will conduct random breath tests. “They’ll be anywhere and everywhere.” During last year’s operation, Melton police impounded three cars and detected 12 drink drivers, four who were drug affected, 10 disqualified, 22 unlicensed, 122 for speeding, nine for traffic light offences, six seatbelt offences, three mobile phone offences and 32 unregistered vehicles. In the same blitz, Moorabool officers impounded four vehicles and pulled over seven drink drivers, one drug and alcohol affected driver, one disqualified and 13 unlicensed drivers. They recorded 137 speeding offences, 20 unregistered vehicles, three traffic light offences, and seatbelt and mobile phone infringements. Sergeant Stuhldreier said many drivers aren’t aware of the ramifications of driving when tired or distracted, which pose risks as serious as drink or drug driving.

He urged families to plan their trips and keep young ones entertained. “It’s really important that people understand the road rules,” he said. “Keep left on the freeway unless you’re overtaking … and, if you’re driving 90 kilometres an hour, keep a six-car length in dry conditions, and 12 car lengths in wet conditions.”

Bacchus Marsh Sergeant Mark Bacon said his team would be running a TAC-funded operation from January 7 until February 25, targeting motorcycle safety. Sergeant Bacon urged riders and drivers to keep an eye out for each other and not to do anything to compromise each other’s safety. “At the end of the day you want to get home to your family,” he said.

Council could head east Melton council will investigate options for the hosting of council meetings in the municipality’s eastern corridor. While the Caroline Springs library has been deemed unsafe as a council meeting venue, chief executive Kel Tori said officers could investigate other venues. A council meeting was held at the library last year, but the space presented security risks to members of the public and the councillors, a report presented to last week’s council meeting stated. “The degree of separation between the councillors and the gallery was limited,” the report stated. “There was no ability for councillors to exit directly to a secure location. “The lack of separation between councillors and the gallery also presented challenges for the mayor in controlling the meeting, with quite restricted visibility to individuals forming the gallery.” Mr Tori said there was also a potential risk to confidentiality, as it wasn’t clear whether the rooms were sufficiently soundproofed to ensure confidential discussions were not overheard by the public. The Lakeview Secondary College’s performing arts facility and the Taylors Hill youth facility have been floated as potential sites for council meetings. Council estimates meetings held in the eastern corridor could cost about $4500 each. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Artist’s colourful notion Katrina Fisicaro’s “dramatic” paintings are colourful, yet moody. Vivid colour is a dominant feature of her work, which will be displayed at the Caroline Springs Gallery until January 30. Her paintings will be displayed as part of the Nocturnes exhibition, which examines how tone and colour combinations work simultaneously, and the Colourful Notions exhibitions, which features a series of canvases “painted on a whim by the artist”.

Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey encouraged residents to experience Fisicaro’s work. “The unique exhibitions … encourage a celebration of colour and are a fantastic addition to the CS Gallery,” Cr Ramsey said. Nocturnes will run until January 2; Colourful Notions will run from January 3 to January 30, at 193 Caroline Springs Boulevard. Details: melton.vic.gov.au. Sumeyya Ilanbey

The Force Will Be Out in Strength Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise during the 2016 Christmas/New Year Holiday for 24 day from Friday 16 December 2016 to Sunday 8 January 2017 to reduce road trauma over this high risk period. Road Policing Advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said during this Road Policing Operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Mobile Phones, Fatigue and Seatbelts/Restraint Non Compliance. Police will be targeting drivers who attend the end of year work functions as it has been identified that there is a risk that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Motorists will see numerous Police units in marked and unmarked vehicles targeting our major arterial roads during this holiday period. Speed Cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to

play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Christmas/New Year Holiday. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.

how I got involved. I try to get away, but something makes me go back - I’ve met so I’ve lived here since 1969, but I was born many people and made friends out of that in Footscray. We were just newly married club. with my husband – and when you get married you shift out, don’t you? What’s the secret to a good bowler? What would you change about the area Knowing how to bowl. I don’t know, if you could? because I’m not a good bowler. (Laughs). It’s a very mental game – you think of it I’m an older lady … but I wish there were is an old person’s game. But it’s mentally draining, especially when you’re having a more youth-oriented activities. hard game. I played an over-60s game today – it’s Where’s your favourite place to hang out only a social game, but good, gracious me in Melton? did we have to bowl. This is nothing like tenpin bowling – I’m one of those people who are happy to stay at home, but during the bowls season you’ve got to whip them in and get the weight right. I’ll be at the Mt Cottrell Bowls Club. It sounds easy but it’s hard because I’ve always worked, up until 15 years ago, but before that I was looking after my you’ve got to mentally focus. kids and taking them to dance classes or horse riding and I just didn’t have time for Why would you recommend others to join a bowls club? myself. DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!

Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Roadwise during the 2016 Christmas/New Year Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000 Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.

Don’t make a Grave Mistake

Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE We all know Kenny Weir’s penchant for burgers … well … Running ahead of time, I decide to take the scenic route to Altona’s Harrington Square, but as I pass Bezirk cafe on Millers Road, I feel a twinge of guilt. I’d exchanged emails a while back with one of Bezirk’s proprietors with a view to doing a CTS review – but we simply haven’t got around to it yet. Now here I am, heading to another Altona cafe to do the biz on the eve of its big opening! Oh well … happily, after I enter Birdcage Cafe Altona, I discover the couple behind it, Adrian and Cath Davey, are the very same folks who run Bezirk – problem solved … or rather, no problem at all! Adrian tells me their initial focus in opening a sister joint for Bezirk ran more along the lines of a hole-in-the-wall operation. But when they found and secured 7 Harrington Square, they decided there was no other way for it than to run with gusto, with the greater space at hand. And a lovely space it is, too. It’s kinda minimalist, but in a warming way. Naturally, Birdcage Cafe is doing a fine line in brekkies, including breakfast pumpkin gnocchi and apple crumble pancakes. But with more room, and more room to cook, Birdcage Cafe is going further than Bezirk in terms of lunch offerings, running to – for instance – a Thai beef salad and a grilled salmon. I’m told the menu testing has all been done, and I’m on hand for a sort-of softish opening

BIRDCAGE CAFE ALTONA Address: 7 Harrington Square, Altona Phone: 0414 224 821 for friends and family. So my lunch options are limited to the burgers … no matter. Now, take it on board that my lunch has been prepared in the knowledge it is to be eaten by a food writer and that I did not pay for it. That said … IMO (in my opinion) this fried chicken burger ($17) is a sensation! There’s nothing particularly sophisticated about it, but … A massive slab of crisp, juicy and tasty fried chook; cheese; rough-cut, excellent coleslaw; a single rasher of very good bacon. Excellent chips on the side. Really top stuff, it all is. And so substantial that I have no room left for a chunk of Nutella baklava. Adrian tells me they’re creating some of their sweet treats in-house, but are sourcing others from local specialists, such as Fresh Prince of Baklava. Also keeping the righteous local vibe going are meat from Paddock to Table in Laverton and hams and the like from Sycamore Deli in Altona. My cafe latte is marvellous. SPORT Right Royal win a woeful way to test the formula

Melton South Primary School’s coach Blake Ivory says it’s been a challenging start to the season. (Damian Visentini)

Melton South Primary School Cricket Club enters the Christmas break on a winning note, but not the way it would have liked. The club was without a win in its opening five matches of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s west A1 competition, and was looking forward to taking on another win-less side, County West. But their anticipation evaporated when County West forfeited the two-day game, handing the Royals a win without one ball being bowled. Royals’ playing coach Blake Ivory said it had been a challenging start to the season. “We’re feeling like we’ve been unlucky,” he said. “We had one game in which we needed 50 runs with eight wickets in hand, and the game was called off. “Another game was called off as we were starting our batting innings.

“It would have been nice going into Christmas getting a win on the board … validating the things we have been working on.” Ivory said their batting had let the side down early in the season against some of the stronger sides. He said after Christmas they have some winnable games coning up, many against sides they haven’t played before. It’s the Royals first season in the VTCA after the side moved across from the Williamstown and District Cricket Association. “We’re still playing a lot of the same teams [who were also in the old competition],” Ivory said. “There’s been a little difference with some rules, the ball and coloured clothing. “Once we play some of the new teams, we’ll have a better idea of the competition,” he said. “We have bowled well and taken the second

or third most wickets. If we get our batting together, hopefully we’ll start to get wins on the board.” While the Royals first XI has struggled, the second, third and fourth XI sides are all in the top. The club’s F-grade side, which is an all-inclusive side, is doing a tremendous job in just its second season. Meanwhile, the Royals have been knocked out of the VTCA’s T20 competition, finishing second in their pool. The Royals faced Sydenham/Hillside on Tuesday night, with the winner to progress through. The Royals batted first, making 4-128 from their overs. It went down to the wire, with Sydenham/Hillside hitting the winning runs off the final ball. The Storm finished on 6-129. Quarter-finals will be held in January. Tara Murray

Teen driver is in charge By Tara Murray Melton’s Jordyn Charge isn’t old enough to have a full car licence, but he certainly knows how to drive. In just his second season of Sprintcar competitions, the 17-year-old is a state champion with the Parr Motorsports Sprintcar Racing Association’s Victorian 360 sprintcar title on his belt. Charge claimed the state title after winning the SRA 360 Gold Cup at Hamilton’s Western Speedway – his first win in sprintcars. “I was still amazed to be given that opportunity,” he said. “We had the opportunity to start on the front row. “I was pretty happy with that … in the back of my mind I thought I could do it.” Despite the race stopping early due to crashes, Charge maintained speed and his

second position, keeping the pressure on defending Victorian champion Michael Tancredi. A mistake from Tancredi on lap 18 gave Charge the lead. It was a nervous few moments for the youngster when the race was stopped on lap 23 because of another crash. He managed to keep his cool and on his 24th lap recorded the fastest lap of the race. “It didn’t help the nerves,” he said of the second break. “I was a bit nervous but I kept my head. “I didn’t know I’d done the fastest lap until afterwards. I entered the corner differently and, it helped me open the gap. “I’ve never felt such an amazing feeling.” Charge, who was last season’s Sprintcar Racing Association of Victoria rookie of the year, got into sprintcars because both his parents love the sport.

He started racing junior quarter midgets cars when he was just five, going on to win state and national titles in that class of racing. His father, Mark, raced sprintcars for a few years, before deciding to focus on his son’s career. Charge is hoping this is a start of a long run in sprintcars. “My goal is to race in America and do it full-time,” he said. “Trying to get into racing and getting the support needed is difficult. “It’s big over there … several NASCAR drivers started in sprintcars. I’d be happy to race NASCAR if I got the opportunity. “The goal though, is to race sprintcars over there.” Charge, who races for Incharge Racing, was due to race in Warrnambool at the weekend.

Diggers Rest Bulla has parted ways with playing coach Kevin Barker half way through the Gisborne and District Cricket Association season. The club and Barker made the decision to go separate ways last week before the Burras McIntyre Cup game against Riddell on Saturday. Burras’ president Sean Fitzpatrick said it was decided that Barker and the club were heading in different directions. “He was unbelievable in the work he was doing off the field and we appreciate that,” he said. “We had a difference of opinion on which way the club should head and we decided to part ways. “It was a mutual decision.” Barker arrived at the club last season and guided the side to a grand final appearance. The grand final finished in a tie, but Gisborne won the premiership after finishing higher on the ladder. In his time at the Burras, Barker averaged 35.10 with the bat and took 30 wickets. Fitzpatrick said they were hoping to sort out the coaching situation for the rest of the season this week. Former coach and current captain Rhys Berry took training last Thursday and looked after the side on Saturday against Riddell. The Burras’ playing stocks took another hit with wicketkeeper Michael Sammut out for the rest of the season. The GDCA suspended Sammut at a tribunal hearing on Wednesday night over a sledging incident the previous weekend. Sammut returned to the club this season. He averaged just over 17 with the bat and had taken five catches and made four stumpings. Fitzpatrick said they would likely have to rely on bringing younger players through to fill the gap. “Both of these players leave really big holes to fill,” he said. “It would be hard to recruit players in one week in the middle of the season. “We’ll be looking at bringing more kids through to fill the holes.” On Saturday, the Burras suffered a big loss to Riddell in a one-day clash. Despite the loss, the Burras remain third on the ladder. Tara Murray 27 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 20, 2016

Grand final rematch set to kick off new season A grand final rematch will kick off Riddell District Football Netball League’s season next year. Diggers Rest will host Riddell in the opening round of the footy season, which debuts on April 8. This year’s grand final was one of the greatest in the league’s history, with the Burras’ win in extra time breaking a premiership hoodoo. The two teams, which met in round one this year as well, will meet twice next season, the second time in round 12. All 12 teams start the season on the same day, with two night matches in the opening round. Melton Centrals will host local rival Rockbank under lights at Arnolds Creek Reserve, while Sunbury Kangaroos will face Romsey in the other night match. These teams faced off in the opening round of this season as well. Other matches in the opening round are, Lancefield at home to Woodend-Hesket, Rupertswood hosting Broadford at Clarke

Oval, and Wallan will take on Macedon. No matches will be held the following weekend due to Easter, one of only three weekends without any matches. The other weekends are May 13, when the RDFL will host West Gippsland Football Netball League in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship. And there will be no matches on the Queens Birthday weekend either. Round 13 will again be split across two weekends to give every team a bye. The annual ANZAC Day clash between Macedon and Rupertswood is the highlight of round two, with Melton Centrals travelling to Romsey Park, after both teams play a second straight night match. In other key matches, there’s only one Sunbury derby, when Rupertswood hosts Sunbury Kangaroos in round seven. Rockbank and Melton Centrals face off for a second time in round 12, while Centrals will play the Burras in round six.

The Rams face the Burras in round five and 14. In netball, the Burras, which finished sixth this year, face a tough start against two-time reigning premiers Riddell. Rockbank’s return to A-grade competition comes against Melton Centrals. The Rams didn’t have a top side this year due to numbers. The A-grade grand final rematch between the Bombers and Macedon is in round four, the only time the two teams face each other. Arch rivals Rupertswood and Riddell face off in round five and round 14. The grand final will be held on September 17, with finals starting on August 26. The RDFL junior competition will start the same weekend as the senior competition, with grand final day set for August 20. Tara Murray Diggers Rest and Riddell won’t have long to face off again. Lions in roaring hot form By Tara Murray Melton enters the Christmas break as one of the form teams of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east-west division. The Lions have shown in recent weeks they will be one of the teams in the mix come finals time and on Saturday they faced Werribee, another team looking for a finals spot. Electing to bat on their home turf, the Lions produced their best innings of the season so far. Seven batsmen each passed double figures on the way to 5-221 from 45 overs – nearly five runs an over. Returning to the side Ben MacRae produced his third 50 of the season, making 52. Skipper David Kirk finished 37 not out, and Jake Thornton-Gielen was 36 not out. The Tigers started well, with their batsmen able to handle the Lions’ pace attack. Enter spinner Dylan Clarke. 28 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 20, 2016

Clarke has not had much opportunity early in the season with the fast bowlers doing all the damage, but has thrived in the past two weeks. Clarke took four wickets last week and followed up at the weekend with 7-49 to help bowl the Tigers out for 198 with one over remaining. Brad Jones and Jake Charge took a wicket each. Clarke is the third Lions bowler to take seven wickets in an innings this season. His figures are the fifth best of the season so far. Teammate Brad Jones is the best with figures of 8-29 in round five. Ashley Sweet’s 7-36 in round five is the fourth best. The win is the Lions fourth in a row, which includes an outright victory. They have picked up the most points in the past four rounds and sit third on the ladder after seven rounds, four points behind Williamstown and two points behind Balwyn.

In the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup, Bacchus Marsh enters the Christmas break on the back of a win against ladder leaders Bacchus Marsh. On a day when other sides in the competition struggled with the bat, the Bulls made the most of their time at the crease. The Bulls managed 8-191 from their 40 overs, with openers Mili Sepala (40 runs) and Ian Spiteri (44 runs) the best of the batsmen. Sunbury gave the target a push and was ahead of the necessary run rate, but the loss of wickets proved costly. Sunbury was bowled out for 173. A career high of 73 not out from Steven Jenkin and 49 from Kel McInnes weren’t enough, with little support from anyone else. The Bulls B-grade side also got the win, defeating St Anthonys. The Bulls made 8-208, with St Anthonys bowled out for 139 in reply. Brett McGrath took 5-28. Both competitions resume on January 7.

Melton’s Karlos Nuestro was one of the stars of the show at the Victorian age swimming championships over the past two weeks at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre. The 12-year-old swam in nine individual events and two relays, bringing home three gold medals. He finished second in the 100-metre breaststroke and third in the 200-metre breaststroke and 200-metre individual medley. Gold medals were his reward, even though he finished behind swimmers from overseas and interstate, because he was first among the Victorian competitors. Nuestro swam in individual events in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and the individual medley. He made seven finals and swam 12 personal best times. Nuestro’s swim in the 100-metre breaststroke was fast enough to qualify him for the national age group championships – the first time he’s qualified for the nationals. His recent effort tops his tally of a gold and two silver, which he won 12 months ago. Nuestro wasn’t the only Melton swimmer to come home with a medal; Jack Carr won silver in the 15-year-old boys’ 100-metre freestyle and bronze in the 200 and 100-metre butterfly in the same age group. Carr also recorded a national time in the 100-metre backstroke. He made seven finals and recorded eight personal best times. Grace McGoldrick won silver in the 16-year-old girls 200-metre butterfly event, while Noah O’Donnell took home bronze in the boys’ 11-and-under 100-metre butterfly. Altogether, Melton had 30 swimmers competing at the championships. Between them they swam in 137 individual events, and several competed in relays as well. The swimmers recorded 77 personal best times, and made the finals in 26 events. Kayla Jones made finals in four individual events, while Mitchell Wills made finals in three. Of all the clubs competing, Melton came 22nd overall. Tara Murray
