Disco dazzle for Melton After a 15-year hiatus, Melton’s Blue Light Disco returned last month – so successfully, police have decided to host the much-loved event bi-monthly. Acting Sergeant Rob Dampier said members were looking forward to busting out their dance moves with the town’s youngsters more often. “The Blue Light Disco gives young people somewhere to go in a safe environment [and] allows for safe and pleasant interactions with police,” he said. “They see we’re human and that we’re not the ogres they sometimes perceive us to be. The feedback from everyone was that it was a roaring success.” About 60 children, aged between seven and 12, attended the disco at the Gap on Graham. Acting Sergeant Dampier said they’re hoping for bigger turnouts in the year ahead. The next Blue Light Disco, for children aged seven-12, will be held on Friday, February 10, from 6-8pm, at the Gap on Graham, 5 Graham Street, Melton. Entry costs $5. Passouts and backpacks are not allowed and children must be dropped off and collected by parents or guardians. Councils face rate crunch By Sumeyya Ilanbey Rate rises are set to be capped at two per cent in the next financial year, with Melton and Moorabool councils announcing they won’t increase rates above the state governmentimposed limit. Rate increases will be capped at two per cent in 2017-18, in line with the consumer price index. Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said while no services had been pared back since the rate cap regime was introduced last year, the council had been “constrained” in its ability to
expand existing services. His concerns have been echoed by local government advocates, including the Municipal Association of Victoria, a parliamentary inquiry finding, the auditor-general and independent assessments of states operating under a rate cap regime. MAV interim president Coral Ross slammed the government for spruiking its “fair go political propaganda” while increasing property taxes by 5.2 per cent and state employee expenses by 7.8 per cent. “Councils did well to protect communities from service cuts last year,” Cr Ross said, “but this will become harder as the cost of delivering services and meeting local infrastructure
renewal needs don’t reflect the CPI, which the government had used to set its rate cap.” Moorabool council applied to increase rates by 3.5 per cent in the past financial year, but chief executive Rob Croxford said it would not be applying to the Essential Services Commission for a variation this year. He expects rate revenue to be down $15 million in the next decade, capital expenditure down $12 million and accumulated losses to top $3 million. Victorian Local Governance Association president Sebastian Klein said this “squeeze” would be passed on to ratepayers. He accused the state government of relying on “populist

policy” rather than reforming the sector. Mr Tori said this year’s two per cent cap would limit funds available to council to undertake infrastructure or expand services. “Council has generally opposed the imposition of a rate cap as it’s contrary to the concept of local government as an autonomous level of government,” he said. “Council has managed its resources and expenditure to accommodate the cap. This will continue in the medium term, but in the longer term it poses a threat to … infrastructure and services.” The average saving to Moorabool households per year will be about $35, according to the Australian Services Union. Driver jailed for death crash By Sumeyya Ilanbey When David Smith was killed by a speeding car being driven “erratically” in Melton more than two years ago, a family was “fractured” and a mother “robbed” of her carer, a court heard. James Carroll, 22, was last month sentenced to three-and-a-half years’ jail after facing one charge of dangerous driving causing death. The County Court heard Carroll drove through a red light into Coburns Road from Barries Road, his car colliding with that of Mr Smith. Carroll was travelling 27km/h above the speed limit at the time of the collision. Carroll told police he was being chased by a driver of a black sedan he was seen arguing

with moments prior to the crash. Carroll said the driver of the black sedan approached him, with something that looked like a pole in his hand, before he, Carroll, drove “pretty erratically” in an attempt to get away. The quality of dash cam footage tendered to the court was too poor to establish whether the other driver had a weapon, Judge Christopher Ryan said.
“On balance, I am prepared to find that [the driver] was armed,” Judge Ryan said. “Further, it is plain that [the other driver’s] conduct was aggressive and directed towards you.” Judge Ryan said that while the driver of the black sedan was acting aggressively towards Carroll and pursuing him, he was “many” metres behind Carroll and didn’t follow him on to Coburns Road. “Whilst I accept on balance that you were scared of [the driver] and what he might do to you, the objective circumstances of your situation were that you were in a motor vehicle and unlikely to be physically assaulted should you have remained in it,” Judge Ryan said. Traffic conditions on the day of the collision
were described as being between moderate and heavy and Carroll put a number of people at risk by driving “erratically”, the judge said. Although Judge Ryan accepted Carroll’s fear was “based in fact”, the actual threat “was not the kind he perceived”. “You have fractured a family. You have robbed [Shirley] Preddy, a woman in poor health, of her carer, who was her son and companion. Her health and general wellbeing has deteriorated as a result of the loss of her son,” Judge Ryan said. “You have left a gaping hole in her life and that of her two sons and their families.” Carroll will be eligible for parole in two years.

Caroline Springs’ Charlene Crawford is stepping into 2017 as a new woman. Ms Crawford (pictured) has lost 93 kilograms and turned her life around, opening her life up to possibilities about which she could previously only dream. At her heaviest, 199kg, Ms Crawford, 28, said a dire warning from her doctor in 2014 prompted her to take action. “My doctor basically told me if I didn’t do something, I’d probably be dead in two years,” Ms Crawford said. “I’d struggled with my weight since I was young, and friends had always told me to have surgery, but I wasn’t in the right mind set. That doctor visit changed that.” After waiting a year for gastric sleeve surgery, Ms Crawford dropped 20 dress sizes from August 2015 until the end of last year. “I was losing 6kg a week at the start, and that gradually slowed down over time,” she said. “I’ve totally changed my ways. I got a personal trainer, I go to the gym, I do Zumba, I go for a walk every night. I used to stay inside all day, now I’m out doing all the things I’m meant to be doing. “I look at food differently now. It’s fuel for your body, not the comfort food it used to be. It’s been an emotional roller-coaster, but I’m a completely changed person now. “It’s all the little things, like sitting on a chair with arms, or going out for a meal and not having people stare. It really has changed my life.” And in the season of new year’s resolutions, what advice does she have for others who may be battling the bulge? “Never give up,” she said. “If I can do it, anyone can. My doctors are so proud of me, and I’m proud of myself for making the change.” Ewen McRae 1134512-PB20-14

Buses will service the new Caroline Springs train station when it opens later this month. Route 460, which runs from Watergardens Shopping Centre to Caroline Springs town centre via Gourlay Road, will be extended to the new station, at the corner of Christies Road and the Western Freeway, from January 29. Announcing the extension, part of the Better Bus Networks program, Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said buses would run every 20 minutes, in each direction, on week days. Route 461, which runs from Watergardens Shopping Centre to Caroline Springs town centre via Taylors Hill, will be extended to service Plumpton South. “We’re providing services where they are needed most – making it easier for people to get where they need to go – and servicing new areas for the first time,” Ms Kairouz said. “Caroline Springs is booming and we’re providing a simple and reliable way for people to use Caroline Springs station from day one.” The new station has been affected by delays and budget blowouts since it was announced. The state government last year ordered a $4.9 million redesign of the single-platform station to accommodate the $518 million duplication of the Ballarat line to Melton. On track for 130 years Ballan commuters celebrated a significant milestone last month – the 130th anniversary of their train station. The station was commissioned on December 1886 on a branch line extension to the Ballarat and Melbourne track via Geelong. The line was later linked to Bacchus Marsh station. This enabled trains to travel directly to Melbourne from Ballarat. (A typical journey took about three hours then.) The Ballan station once had four road freight yards, a signal box, goods shed and a turntable. It is now an important stop on the

House boom hits Bacchus Marsh By Sumeyya Ilanbey Bacchus Marsh is in the midst of a property boom. The once rural town is fast becoming a favourite destination for investors and first-home buyers – and a 20 per cent jump in house prices proves their savvy. Median house prices jumped by 19.6 per cent to $440,000 in the year to September 30, new Real Estate Institute of Victoria data reveals. This price hike was far ahead of Darley’s growth (12.1 per cent), Ballan’s (9.5) and
Melton’s eastern corridor, which has traditionally experienced strong growth. The data comes just months after Moorabool council approved its Housing Bacchus Marsh 2041 strategy which identified housing supply and demand, and set a strategy for residential growth that considered the specific housing pressures at Bacchus Marsh. Moorabool council’s acting strategic and development manager Andrew Goodsell said last year that Housing Bacchus Marsh 2041 would establish guidelines and a framework to protect the character of the town.
REIV chief executive Geoff White said “all the stars [were] aligned” for Melbourne’s property market. He said the spring market experienced everything a seller needed – solid price growth, high clearance rates and strong buyer demand. “Everything is aligned for sellers, who are benefiting from strong buyer confidence and record low interest rates,” Mr White said. “Melbourne’s more affordable areas continue to appeal to buyers seeking the value and space that the outer suburbs offer,” he said, predicting the market will continue to improve.
Sweeney Bacchus Marsh real estate agent Kelvin Gaffiero said many buyers are attracted to the town’s “country-feel”. He didn’t expect this to change any time soon. “People who’ve been living in Werribee, Tarneit, Wyndham Vale and those areas that were country towns 20 years ago are moving to the next suburb across, which is Bacchus Marsh,” Mr Gaffiero said. Taylors Hill, Burnside Heights, Caroline Springs and Hillside also had high median house price growth, while Brookfield and Melton South prices rose by about 3 per cent.
Dome among the gum trees Next time you’re passing Ballan by train, you may just notice it … a space ship-looking structure in the middle of a paddock. The Dome, dubbed by locals the “igloo” or “spaceship”, was built by Anthony Clarke in 2008 as a house for all climate extremes. Mr Clarke said the house is hurricane, earthquake, tornado and bushfire resistant. Mr Clarke’s house has become a bit of a tourist icon for Ballan in recent years, with at least one person knocking on his door every month to find out a bit more about it. The Dome sits on 5.6 acres, has six bedrooms, five bathrooms and a two-car garage. Mr Clarke is ready to move on and retire. The house, at 14 Denholms Road, is on the market for $1.2 million. Fair funding call for sport clubs By Sumeyya Ilanbey and Esther Lauaki Sports funding put the cat among the pigeons at Melton council last month. Councillors were being asked to put $100,000 towards upgrades to public toilets and new female change rooms at Melton Recreation Reserve. The funds would become available if Melton South Football Netball Club secures a $70,000 Sport and Recreation Victoria grant. But Watts ward councillor Lara Carli told the meeting that council should fund the same
standard of infrastructure in all three wards for other sporting clubs with the same needs. She said it was unfair for council to fund Melton Recreation Reserve upgrades while ignoring other sports clubs that had requested similar support. But community services general manager Maurie Heaney said the council had already agreed to allocate funding on condition the sports club also receives a regional grant. Otherwise, projects are referred to the upcoming budget for consideration, he said. The funding stoush arose as an audit of
regional sports reserves was released in the final draft of AFL Goldfields’s regional strategy. Of the 15 sports reserves in Melton and Moorabool, 14 were identified as needing upgrades to change rooms and 11 needed better umpires rooms. The audit also identified 13 reserves that need upgrades to either netball facilities, lighting or courts. “More than 80 per cent of the region’s home-and-away change rooms and 60 per cent of umpire change rooms [in the Goldfields region] do not cater for female participants,”
the report states. It said investment in change room amenities was essential to cater for growing female participation in football, and to recognise netball as a major regional sport. The AFL Goldfields report identified Melton as facing one of the largest projected sports participation increases in the Goldfields region over the next few years. Councillors unanimously voted in favour of Cr Carli’s amended motion. The AFL Goldfields Regional Strategy is a collaborative effort by organisations including AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria and 14 councils.

Enough! Road warrior calls a halt By Goya Dmytryshchak It was a fatal crash that sent shockwaves through the community. On October 24, 2016 a car driven by 15-year-old Newport boy Luke Lee crashed in West Sunshine, killing him and injuring his four passengers aged 13-17. One of them, 15-year-old Billie Lea Harris, of Doreen, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was left facing 12 months of treatment. A crowdfunding page has been set up for her in a bid to raise $50,000. It’s teenagers like these that the Fit2Drive program is trying to reach and influence. Altona’s Leigh Hardinge is president of the Fit2Drive Foundation which holds peer-led workshops for year 11 students and other programs for people aged 16-25. The program started with 18 schools in 2000 and now has more than 150 participating. Mr Hardinge, an SES founding member who has seen the aftermathofhundredsofcrashes, said there was no judgement or scare tactics, just facts to get young people thinking about their choices. “A lot of people get wrapped up in the road toll,” he said. “The toll is a tragic situation, but people very very rarely talk about very serious injuries where people are either maimed or have acquired brain injury for the rest of their lives. “It’s terrible; you’re going to have to have carers for the rest of your life. “It must be an awful shock, particularly if they still have reasonable thoughts and mind function, but mechanically they’re locked in a wheelchair. “And these are the things we try to share. We don’t believe in traumatising youngsters as to what can be the end result.
Leigh Hardinge is president of a program to keep young people safe on the road. (Luke Hemer)
“We try to share with them scenarios that are based on fact.” Mr Hardinge said one of the biggest contributors to road trauma among young people was distraction. “Whether it be texting, whether it be mobile phone conversations, whether it be conversations within the car, with all the other
traffic and everything else that’s around the place, it’s an invitation for a tragic outcome,” he said. “We used to be all [focused] towards the young drivers, but it’s now road users. “We look at the road users as a whole … pedestrians, passengers or drivers. They all come under a regime of … you’ve got to be prepared to do the right thing,
be safe and think of your family and friends.” Fit2Drive has introduced a LegitiMATE Moves program for people aged 15-18 who have offended. “We’re not there to tell them about the rights and wrongs of what they’ve been doing: It’s just to give them some options to work with,” Mr Hardinge said.

NEWS
MY PLACE When Annette Butterworth found out about BusyFeet at Chadstone, her initial reaction was: “Why don’t we have one in Melton?” She talks to Sumeyya Ilanbey about bringing the dance program for children with disabilities to her home town.
Eynesbury is just quiet and peaceful. You wouldn’t think it was only 10 minutes out of Melton. I really enjoy the quietness. What would you change about the area if you could? Probably a few more facilities, such as a supermarket. And we really need a school – for younger families that’s a bit of a pain – but, apart from that, nothing else. That’s why it’s so quiet here. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? Oh, I don’t know. I really like the Courthouse Cafe, but we usually hang out in Eynesbury, at the homestead. It’s just across the road, and we get coffee or have dinner.
Why do you think it’s important to offer a service like this in the municipality? It’s really nice to give them the opportunities that other kids are getting. It gives them the confidence to be able to perform in front of large audiences. They performed at several Christmas parties and really enjoyed it. It’s also a gold coin donation, so it’s affordable for parents. What’s been the most rewarding part of watching BusyFeet Melton grow? Just to see how much the children are enjoying it … you can see their confidence grow, motor skills improve and they’re making friends … but we need more volunteers. The more volunteers we have, the more children we can cater for. What’s the feedback from parents like?
How did you get involved with BusyFeet Melton?
They’re rapt with it. The parents get some time out – they sit in another room, have a coffee and chat, and can network with other parents.
It started as a Rotary program at Chadstone. I

We’ve been here ever since we got married – that was 42 years ago. We’ve been in Eynesbury for seven years now. The kids had all grown and moved out, and we wanted a bit of peace and quiet.
knew there wasn’t anything like that here and I thought ‘why not?’ We started at Melton in October, 2014 and, in the last six months, we’ve started another group in Hillside. We’re supported by the Rotary Club of Caroline Springs.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir waxes lyrical about fabulous Footscray fare … Count us among those who see the Indian food flowering in West Footscray as something quite fabulous – absolutely worth celebrating. We have our favourite food there, and favourite places, depending on our whim of the moment. One thing we do look for is a point of difference … and Tiwari Tea House has that in spades. While other Barkly Street eateries feature chaat – savoury Indian snack-type dishes – this place does nothing but … And the food is all vegetarian. Four of us get into the menu and come away happy … and perhaps even refreshed after eating snacky things so devoid of the heavy spicing and meatiness we often enjoy hereabouts. As the name makes clear, this place is also much about tea – so we go with that flow. Bennie and I have the masala chai ($9.95 for two), while our pals Julian and Christine have black ginger tea. It seems rather pricey for a couple of cups of chai. No matter – we enjoy all our food, and love some of it a lot. Big hits are our vada pavs ($6.95 each). Looking like tall, chubby burgers, these are bread buns stuffed with wonderful potato patties. The potato is heavily infused with turmeric, but otherwise mildly seasoned. That’s a lot of carbs, right? Yet the overall effect is much lighter than we may have been
TIWARI TEA HOUSE Address: 1/578 Barkly Street, West Footscray Phone: 8529 5960 expecting – and the flavours really hit the spot. We have two sets of crispy cutlets ($8.95 for two), served with dipping sauces of the tamarind and green chilli variety. The spinach-cheese cutlets are on the dull side … no such problem with the mixed vegetable varieties – they’re both stuffed with a mix that is colourful and tasty. Dahi puri ($7.95 for six) are close relatives of the more familiar pani puri. So closely related, I suspect, that I struggle to tell the difference, apart from the inclusion of yogurt – though there’s no doubt these sev-topped (crushed crispy noodles) flavour bombs are delicious! Aloo tiki chat ($8.95) is another big hit with all of us – we should’ve ordered double! Yes, more potato. Here, the spud rissoles appear to be even less seasoned, yet – nice surprise – have a semblance of chargrill flavour. They’re topped with a sticky jam/chutney, tomato, raw onion and more sev. These are very, very good. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Melton Phoenix coach fired up for more improvement Melton Phoenix is hoping its coming FFV state league 4 west season will build on the momentum created at the end of 2016. The Phoenix had an up and down 2016, starting and finishing well, but with a down patch in the middle of the season. With wins from six of its past seven games, the Phoenix finished fifth – eight points behind division winners Brimbank Stallions. The club has appointed Ozzy Inal as coach for this season. Inal coached the side for the last seven games last season after the club parted ways with Peter Schwellinger, who had been coach since 2015. “I got into coaching after I had a knee reconstruction and it didn’t recover well enough to keep playing,” Inal said.
‘‘
A bit of heart and hard work … and we turned it around
’’
- Ozzy Inal
“I took up coaching to stay involved. “Two years ago, I was a senior assistant coach and last season I took on the reserves coaching role. “When the senior coach parted ways with the club, we were in a bad spot, sitting eighth on the ladder.” The Phoenix turned it around and missed promotion by just five points. The finish to the season excited Inal and
showed exactly what the players can do. “There had been 7-0 and 8-0 losses,” he said. “I’m good friends with a lot of the players from my playing days. “A bit of heart and hard work, along with changing a few things, and we turned it around.” Inal, who was the club’s vice-president last year, said it looked like the Phoenix would be able to hold on to most of last year’s playing group. “Out of the 25, I think most of them are staying,” he said. “Training starts on Tuesday and we’ll have more of an idea then.” Inal said the players who weren’t going to return were set to try out with sides at higher levels.
Burras back in business By Tara Murray Diggers Rest-Bulla has returned to the top two of Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup, posting a strong win over Bacchus Marsh on Saturday. After a tough end to 2016, the Burras were positive with the bat, which got results on the scoreboard. Blake Robinson was gone early, but Steven Fogarty went on the attack during a short stay for 17. At 2-24, it could have gone either way, with the Burras already struggling with the bat this season. But a 131-run partnership between Lindon Dowsett and Ryan Peters put the Burras right, with a total of 6-178. For both men, it was their first half-century of the season. Dowsett made 81 and Peters made 51. Madushanka Ekanayaka and Dennis O’Loughlin took two wickets each for the Bulls, but the batting line-up let the side down. The Bulls made it to 36, losing just one wicket, but all went downhill from there and they were bowled out for 118, the opening partnership the biggest of their match. O’Loughlin was the Bulls’ best batsman, making 23. Burras’ bowlers Sean Morris and Matthew Bulluss took seven wickets. Morris bowled tightly for his 4-14 off eight overs. The win puts last season’s grand finalists ahead of Gisborne in second spot, while the Bulls are sixth on the ladder, less than three points outside the top four. In other results, ladder-leaders Sunbury defeated Romsey, Riddell won its third straight game, defeating Gisborne, while bottom side Rupertswood recorded its third win of the season with victory over Woodend. In the B-grade competition, St Anthonys claimed the scalp of ladder-leaders Sunbury United. United batted well, managing nearly a run a ball for their total of 2-221, captain-coach Steve Grey making 110 off 120 balls in an innings that included 11 fours and three sixes. Jason Orr and John Jensen took the wickets for St Anthonys. The Saints found the same momentum with the bat as United and the run rate didn’t prove an issue. The Saints ended at 6-222, making the runs with three overs to spare. The win puts the Saints sixth on the ladder, nearly 16 points outside the top four, while Sunbury United fell to third. In other results, Bacchus Marsh maintained fourth spot with an easy win against East Sunbury. Wallan moved to the top of the ladder with its victory over Macedon, while Lancefield defeated Ashfield. In C-grade, Blackwood lost to Woodend.
He said they would hopefully have three to four new players to add to the side. “I’m never going to hold back players who want to try themselves at a higher level,” he said. “I’m happy to develop young players, bring them through the side and get them senior games.” Inal said the club had been active putting together the right off-field group as well. “We had a good team and trusted them to turn it around,” he said. “We’ve got a fitness and conditioning coach on board and appointed an assistant coach. “We’re in a strong position off field.” Tara Murray
Burras sign up A-grade star in friendly coup Diggers Rest has pulled off a recruiting coup, signing former Australian netballer Natasha Chokljat for this year’s Riddell District Netball League season. Chokljat played 29 matches for Australia in a long top-level career spanning Australia and New Zealand. It was Chokljat’s friendship with Burras’ playing coach Amy Carroll that sealed her commitment to the club. Carroll and Chokljat played together at Melbourne Phoenix in the old Commonwealth Bank Trophy competition. “She’s a good friend of mine,” Carroll said. “On the off chance, I sent her a message to sound her out, and she sounded really keen. “She had a baby last year and I thought she might feel like doing something for herself … we managed to get her on board.” Carroll said the club is excited by what Chokljat could bring to the court. “She’s a very exciting midcourt addition,” she said. “To get someone with her strengths and experience around the middle of the court, you cannot buy that.” It’s not just on court that Chokljat’s signing will make a mark. “She coached the ACU Sovereigns [Victorian Netball League side] for a year, and will be a great help to me,” Carroll said. “I will draw on her experiences. “It’ll be an all-round benefit for the club. It’s got everyone excited with a lot of people looking up to her.” Carroll said there will be a similar A-grade line-up to last season when the team finished sixth, knocked out in the first week of the finals Carroll said they had set the bar a little higher this year. “I really want our team to get up there and be pushing in finals, rather than just making them. “The aim is to finish top three.” Carroll said while the top side would be similar, their other three sides would be a lot stronger. “We had a great turn-out at trials,” she said. “The B and C grade sides will be strengthened.” The Burras will kick off their season against two-time reigning premiers Riddell.
Ryan Peters scored his first half-century of the season on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
Tara Murray 23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 10, 2017
SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Lions lose their roar By Tara Murray After ending 2016 on a high, it was a disappointing start to the new year for Melton in Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association’s east-west competition. The Lions entered the Christmas break one of the form teams of the competition on the back of four straight wins, but were unable to produce the goods against Taylors Lakes on Saturday. The Lions’ batsmen struggled to get going, only Anthony Gale scored more than 13. Without that early break, the Lions were never going to post a high total, and were bowled out for 81. Gale top-scored with 23. While the Lions bowlers have been among the standouts in the competition this season, they needed a miracle to swing this match. They’d bowled Hoppers Crossing out for 19 earlier on, so knew it was possible, but they weren’t up to repeat that feat. Taylors Lakes chased down the runs it needed losing just three wickets, and finishing on 3-82. Brad Jones took two wickets, while Nathan Dantonio took the other. The loss means the Lions slip to fourth on the ladder. This week, they face third-placed Noble Park in a two-day match. Meanwhile the Lions’ under-15 side has started the JC Craig Shield, one of the state’s premier under-15 competitions, with a loss to Altona. Altona made 8-129 off its 45 overs. Lions’ captain Adrian Monitto took three wickets. In reply, the Lions were bowled out for 88 during the final over of the day. The under 15s now have three games this week, against Yarraville, Hoppers Crossing and Williamstown, before two games the following week.
Sports shorts VTCA
Melton Centrals easily accounted for Williamstown Congs in Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1. Set 148 for victory, Centrals openers Bradley Coulson (71no) and Grant McDonald (68no) reached the target with 13 overs to spare. Melton South Primary School suffered a loss against Seabrook.

Darley remains in the Ballarat Cricket Association first-grade top two after a win against East Ballarat. The Lions were in trouble early at 6-43, before Bradley Barnes and the rest of the tail fought back to take the total to 143. Barnes top scored with 52. East Ballarat was cruising at 0-45 before wickets started to fall, the side being eventually dismissed for 133.

Melton derbies look set to kick off the Ballarat Football Netball League this year. In a draft fixture, Melton South is listed to host Melton in a standalone fixture on April 8. The Panthers will also be in the spotlight the following weekend when they host the Sunbury Lions on Good Friday. The rest of the competition starts the following week, including the Anzac Day game between the Panthers and North Ballarat City and reigning premier Bacchus Marsh facing local rival Darley.
