An open day is being held in Gordon next weekend for people wanting to adopt, foster or sponsor horses without homes. Horse Shepherd Equine Sanctuary founder Anne Young (pictured) said many horses need permanent or part-time homes, and she’s hoping to help them on their way this weekend. Otherwise they will need sponsors, she said. “We don’t expect people to take the horses on the day,” Ms Young said. “It’s more about coming and meeting the horses. Our horse trainers will work really hard to make sure the horse is suitable for that particular person … if it turns out the horse isn’t what you want, you can bring it back.” Ms Young urged people to go online at horseshepherd.org.au to find out more. The Adoption, Sponsor, Foster Day will run from noon until 2pm on April 8, at 160 Gascards Lane, Gordon. Details: 0400 743 188. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Diggers Rest is likely to experience solid price - Joseph Walton growth

’’

Joseph Walton said median house prices in Diggers Rest increased by 24 per cent (to $345,000) in the 12 months to December, 2016. Mr Walton said the city’s outer suburbs experienced “strong price growth” last year,

with buyers forced out suburbs closer to the city. The median house price in Melbourne in the December quarter was $770,000. “Diggers Rest offers buyers the ideal combination of space and affordability, while also being less than 35 kilometres from the city,” Mr Walton said. “With a median house price below $350,000 and greater infrastructure commitments in the city’s outer suburbs, Diggers Rest is likely to experience solid price growth throughout 2017.”

The price of a block of land in Diggers Rest that could one day accommodate up to 25 townhouses has increased by more than $700,000 in less than 18 months. A 5795-square-metre site, at 32 Old Calder Highway, fetched $1.5 million at a private sale last month after a week on the market. It was last sold in November, 2015, for $800,000. Nest Real Estate director Ren Roberts said a Hillside developer bought the land, which is in

a mixed-use zone and close to a train station, with plans to build up to 25 townhouses. Mr Roberts said Diggers Rest had experienced a house price boom in recent years, but it was still a relatively affordable area for first-home buyers and families. “This was one of the last major in-fill sites left in Diggers Rest,” he said. “The market’s really good and Diggers Rest has good rental yields.” Up to 30 developers inquired about the site before it was sold on March 9, Mr Roberts said. Cemetery camera calls rejected By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council has no immediate plans to install security cameras at Melton cemetery despite a number of social media users reporting increased vandalism at the site. One person posted photos on Facebook of smashed glasses and vases, upturned light poles and destroyed soft toys, saying graves near that of her daughter had been vandalised “again”. Many others reported similar incidents, including one man who claims the vandalism had been going on for years.

“Our son is buried [at Melton cemetery] and the rats even removed items off his plaque,” the man said. Melton council engagement and advocacy manager Daniel Hogan said that in the past year the council had received two complaints of minor vandalism at the cemetery, on Centenary Avenue. Contractors had recently reported minor damage to a headstone. “Council does not have plans to install closed-circuit TV cameras, however we continue to monitor the cemetery, with people on site regularly,” Mr Hogan said.

“Council aims to balance community access to the public cemetery with the protection of assets. Residents are encouraged to call the police should they witness anti-social behaviour within the cemetery.” Scores of people shared their experiences about the cemetery on Facebook, with some suggesting a petition should be started. “It’s hard enough to cope with the loss of a loved one and the expense to lay them at rest is enormous,” Bek wrote. “And now the families are subjected to this kind of disrespectful behaviour. How hard is it

Wide appeal in Melton commemorate the last great charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba in 1917,” Mr Lawrey said. “All our dedicated volunteers, often veterans, are determined to get into the community and not only sell badges, but to share their stories and experiences. It is a wonderful time for our community to come together and pay respects to our past and present servicemen and women.”

Funds raised from the appeal will go towards a number of veterans’ services and programs, including the provision of financial assistance. Badges can be purchased from the Melton RSL, 28 Reserve Road, Melton, and from volunteers, Woolworths or Officeworks. Donations can be made at www.anzacappeal. com.au. Sumeyya Ilanbey

The Country Fire Authority has been given an extra three years to clean up the toxic Fiskville site. Four years ago, the Environment Protection Authority issued two clean-up notices requiring the CFA to develop, and maintain, a clean-up plan for the former training site by June this year. But the CFA recently requested more time to complete the final clean-up, with the EPA agreeing to extend the deadline to 2020. An EPA spokesman said the extent, and nature, of contamination at the Fiskville site was larger and more complicated than was believed when the clean-up notices were issued in 2013. “While a number of rehabilitation works have already been carried out at the site, CFA has requested more time due to the considerable scale of some of the issues,” the spokesman said. “The works have been focused on preventing off-site migration of contaminants while a permanent containment solution was developed. “EPA will also require CFA to implement any additional interim controls necessary to manage site contamination risks until final rehabilitation works are completed.” The Fiskville training site was permanently closed two years ago after tests revealed high levels of contamination at the site. A Monash University study found firefighters who worked at the Fiskville training centre had higher than expected rates of skin, testicular and brain cancer. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Wheelchair policy rethink urged By Sumeyya Ilanbey An elderly Brookfield woman is calling on a local shopping centre to rethink its policy on complimentary wheelchairs for customers. Vivian McKimmie has been using a walker for the past 2½ years. In that time, her visits to a shopping centre were few and far between. So when Woodgrove Shopping Centre introduced complimentary wheelchairs for shoppers several months ago, she was ecstatic – it meant she could browse the centre without having to worry about walking long distances. However, her jubilation was shortlived. A

few weeks ago Ms McKimmie was told the complimentary wheelchairs were not allowed out of the centre – including to the carpark. Her friend Margaret Adamson told Star Weekly Ms McKimmie hadn’t visited the shopping centre in many years and the wheelchair services had given her a new sense of freedom. “She was always buying her food online, so Woodgrove offering wheelchairs gave her a chance to go into the shopping centre, pick her own stuff and do things she wasn’t able to do,” Ms Adamson said. Last month Ms McKimmie and a friend

were unable to find a disabled parking bay at Woodgrove, the closest carpark space was about 600 metres from an entrance. Ms McKimmie was already suffering from sore legs and because she wasn’t able to use a wheelchair, her friend pushed her on her walker. She fell and hit her head when the walker hit a pothole in the carpark. She was taken to hospital by ambulance. Doctors said she suffered mild anmesia. Last Wednesday Ms McKimmie said she still couldn’t remember what happened, but the bruising on her arm, back and abdomen have

served as a reminder of what she had endured. She is asking Woodgrove to reconsider it’s wheelchair policy and introduce wheelchairs that can be used outdoors so others don’t experience a similar ordeal. In a statement, Woodgrove centre manager Kylie Robertson said the wheelchairs were not safe to be used on roads. She said the centre had a “significant” number of disabled parking bays – well above the number required by legislation. “The safety of all customers visiting Woodgrove is our top priority and something we take very seriously,” Ms Robertson said.

Austin powers in sprint Steve Pike’s love affair with Austin Healeys started in 1966. Three years later, he bought one of his own. Since, then he’s owned more “than he could care to count”. Mr Pike will be racing his beloved Austin Healey at the Myrniong Historic Car Sprint this weekend. He will join other vintage and historic car enthusiasts to raise money for the restoration of Myrniong Hall. Mr Pike says he looks forward to the event each year, which attracts like-minded people from across the state. “I purchased my current one in 2004,” Mr Pike says. “It was an opportunity to get that particular model. It had been sitting in a barn in the United States for 25 years, not being used. So I imported it to Australia, pulled it

apart, restored it and a built a race motor. “The body, the style of Austin Healeys are just superb.” The Myrniong sprint, an 850-metre event for cars, sports cars and sedans made between 1920 and 1975, will start at 9.15am on Sunday, April 9, at Korobeit Road, Myrniong. There will be a display of classic cars and food and drinks will be available. Entry costs $10. For more information, call 9584 0822 or 9827 8124. Sumeyya Ilanbey

A path to contentment More than two dozen blind or vision impaired people from across Melbourne descended on Brimbank Park recently for the first in a series of walks across Melbourne’s west. Organised by Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria, the walks are designed to bring together members of the vision impaired community to explore nature, learn about local history, and connect socially. The walks were made possible through a grant from Brimbank council. Program co-ordinator Miriam Bilander said such a simple concept could make a big difference. “The aim of these walks is to promote physical fitness, get out of the house and get active, reduce isolation and also learn about some of the local history,” Ms Bilander said. “I don’t want to paint the picture that all blind or vision impaired people are socially

isolated, but certainly it is hard for some people to get out and experience new things like this. “We meet at Flinders Street Station to travel by public transport, with a lot of vision impaired people lacking confidence on that, and we always finish with coffee and lunch somewhere so it is a really social outing.” Ms Bilander said 25 people attended the first walk in Brimbank Park, with similar numbers hoped for the next walk at Overnewton Castle (April 28). “We’ve got volunteers who help guide people, and often they become friends and catch up regularly,” Ms Bilander said. “We make sure our walks are very tactile, lots of touching trees, bush treasures and smelling flowers. The feedback is always very positive.” Ewen McRae

Janene Skidmore has called Mt Wallace home for the past three decades. She’s spent years, and tens of thousands of dollars, transforming her property into her pride and joy. Ms Skidmore says she’s enjoyed the relative quietness and the views from her backyard. But the Moorabool Wind Farm project looks like it’s about to change that. Her property neighbours the northern section (Bungeeltap) of the project, which will include up to 50 turbines. Another 57 turbines will be included in the project’s southern section at Ballark. Ms Skidmore wants project developers Goldwind to relocate several of the turbines that will directly border her property. “I suffer with migraines and vertigo,” Ms Skidmore says. “Every time the [blades] go around and pass the post, they make a whooshing noise. “When I go visit my brother, who lives near a wind farm, I struggle to stay there for more than an hour because the vertigo and migraine kicks in. Even when I go into a hospital where there is a whooshing noise coming from the air-conditioning, the vertigo kicks in and I struggle to balance.” Ms Skidmore says she’s met Goldwind officials and has asked that they relocate several of the turbines. She claims they have declined to do so. A Goldwind spokeswoman wouldn’t be drawn on whether the company would alter its proposal to accommodate Ms Skidmore’s concerns, but said there were many community benefits associated with the project, including jobs, rates to Moorabool council and an annual community benefit fund.

ARE YOUR SLIDING DOORS STUCK? NEED NEW WHEELS OR NEW TRACK? Janene Skidmore wants wind turbines relocated from the border of her property. (Dennis Manktelow)

“The project team is meeting with neighbours living within 1.5 kilometres and are offering the opportunity to be involved with the wind farm,” the spokeswoman said. “We are unable to comment on individual circumstances in respect of the privacy of neighbours to the project.” The Australian Medical Association several years ago released a statement disputing claims that wind farms caused health issues.

“The infrasound and low frequency sound generated by modern wind farms in Australia is well below the level where known health effects occur,” the statement read. “People living near wind farms who experience adverse health … may well do so because of heightened anxiety of perceptions about wind farms.” Construction on the project is expected to start mid year.

Cr Michelle Mendes Watts Ward

Easter is fast approaching, and I know we’re all looking forward to the extended long weekend and spending time with family and friends.

It’s a pleasure to present this, my very first Ward Talk, after being elected as Watts Ward Councillor late last year.

Many of us also take the opportunity to get away for a few days and make the Sadly however, the statistics speak for themselves, and year after year, people are seriously injured, and lives are lost, on our roads over the Easter long weekend. This is a real concern, and one that continues to haunt our community over and over again. Melton City Council takes the safety of our community very seriously, so I’d like to remind residents and visitors that road safety is a shared responsibility, and that we all have a role to play in ensuring everyone returns home to their loved ones safe and unharmed. I hope you all make good choices for yourself and others on the roads, and have a safe and happy Easter. It’s also school holiday time, so don’t forget that Council offers a wide range of free or low-cost activities to keep kids and teens entertained. The Melton Library and Learning Hub and Caroline Springs Library are hosting activities that include DIY Robotics, screenings of the movie, Trolls, and Eggsperimenting where kids can complete a chocolate egg challenge, make a wobbly egg toy and learn about egg chemistry and technology. For teens, our Youth Services team is offering activities ranging from archery, horse riding, and excursions to Werribee Zoo and the You Yangs, through to a live music event featuring Neighbours star, Sianoa. There really is something for everyone, so visit Council’s website at melton.vic.gov.au/events for more information. Happy Easter, everyone! Debt stress hits west

Stranded by train timetable

(iStock)

By Christina Zhou, Domain Melburnians are flocking to the city fringes where they can still buy a house with a low deposit. But what they may not realise are the less visible costs and risks that could make them fall behind on home loan repayments. Kurunjang, Melton, Melton West and Toolern Vale are among the worst postcodes in the country for mortgage arrears, a report by global ratings agency Standard & Poor’s shows. The 3337 suburbs sit alongside pockets of Queensland and Western Australia, hit by a slowdown in Australia’s resource sector. There were 3.99 per cent of home loans in arrears in postcode 3337 in the December quarter, compared with Victoria’s 1.08 per cent – a rise from 0.99 per cent a year ago. Professor Shelley Mallett, general manager at the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s research and policy centre, said areas such as Kurunjang attracted low and middle-income households. Most were squeezed out of the housing market in inner and middle rings of the city. But a mortgage in outer-ring suburbs or growth corridors can also be a real financial stretch for these families, she said. People who are in mortgage arrears often are also struggling to pay rates and other costs. “Often couples are taking out mortgages with low deposits, and their mortgage payments are high relative to their incomes,” she said. “Because of their location, they are caught in life’s juggle – long commutes for work, sourcing and paying for childcare, getting kids to school and balancing this with work. “This can make life stressful, and it can mean that making ends meet … is a real struggle.” High energy and transport costs made these families particularly vulnerable to stress and any kind of life shock, Professor Mallett added.

The Mortgage Wellbeing Service, a joint project of Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre and Djerriwarrh Health Services, provides free legal and financial counselling and social work assistance to clients facing mortgage stress in Melbourne’s west. Of the 198 clients from April 2015 to December 2016, about one in four were from postcode 3337 – the highest proportion from any postcode, Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre director Ben Zika said. About 37 per cent of mortgages were from lenders other than the big four banks, and 66

per cent reported there were multiple factors that contributed to their mortgage stress. “Unemployment, workplace injuries and relationship breakdowns are all life events that lead to having other legal problems … a knock-on effect being that you can’t afford to pay your mortgage,” he said. West Justice chief executive Denis Nelthorpe said many people in mortgage stress seek help at the last minute. They would typically be in arrears on council rates and have problems with the standard costs of owning a home and having a mortgage, he said.

Andres Cortes boards the train at Melton railway station to head to Melbourne’s CBD five days a week. While he concedes the public transport system in Melton has never been world-class, he says it’s become worse since the new Caroline Springs station opened at the end of January. “[Public Transport Victoria] changed the timetable a few months ago, and now the entire system is in a mess,” Mr Cortes says. “There are always delays closer to the city, so sometimes we lose five minutes and sometimes we lose 10 minutes. “But by the time we arrive at Melton, it’s too late to catch a bus.” In the afternoons and evenings, all weekday bus departures are scheduled to depart five to 10 minutes after a train’s scheduled arrival. But Mr Cortes claims delays at the city end make it almost impossible for rail commuters to catch buses once they disembark at Melton. Mr Cortes says he can wait up to 45 minutes for a bus. “The service is very poor” Mr Cortes says. And he’s not the only one to complain. PTV has received six complaints about timetabling issues since January 29. PTV spokesman John Lindsay said the agency works closely with train and bus operators to co-ordinate connections. “PTV is … working with operators to improve this,” Mr Lindsay said. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Local drug solution call By Sumeyya Ilanbey Forty people have died from drug overdoses in Melton in the past seven years – 11 just last year – prompting a call for a more localised approach to drug issues. Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association chief executive Sam Biondo said more localised solutions needed to be developed for different regions. He said there was a strong need for improved harm reduction and treatment access in places such as Melton. “There’s a lack of appropriate infrastructure,”

he said. “There’s a lack of awareness and harm reduction measures that might be available to those local communities. State Coroner Sara Hinchey, who has made a submission to the parliamentary drug law reform inquiry, has released statistics on the number of Victorians who died from drug overdoses since 2009. The number of drug overdose deaths in Melton remained mostly stable until 2015, at between three and six, but the total jumped to 11 last year. Mr Biondo said that given the large youth populations in growth suburbs such as Melton

and Bacchus Marsh, the early warning signs for potential dangers needed to be addressed and heeded. He said he was concerned the drug problem in outer suburbs and regional areas could worsen because of their “isolation” from services. “The type of services you’d need to provide in different areas would vary … depending on the population density and whatever the issue on the ground is,” he said. “If you’ve got high levels of young people dispersed over wide spaces, you’d think there’d be the capacity to put in additional out-reach youth workers and mobile services.”

Ballan spirit on record Ballan residents raised money for a World War II memorial hospital for 22 years before the first sod was turned. Built in 1966, the Bush Nursing Hospital (now Ballan District Health and Care) was established to commemorate servicemen and women of the area. The clinic’s history has been collated in a new book, People with the Right Spirit, to mark the hospital’s 50th anniversary. The book tells a story about local people “with great energy and enterprise, working together to take care of each other”. The book, launched at the Ballan Autumn Festival last month, is available from the Ballan District Health and Care and Ballan post office. It costs $25. Sumeyya Ilanbey

MY PLACE Joy Lawn has been volunteering with the L2P program since it started in Melton nine years ago. Her work with young people was recognised when she was named Melton Woman of the Year. She speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. What’s your connection to Melton? I’ve lived here for 48 years at the same house in Melton South. I was living in Altona North before that. My husband had a block of land here before we even met, and when we got married, we built our home. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? The clean air. I go down to the inner suburbs and you can see the haze hanging over the city. Melton still has clean air, but it’s not the country town it used to be. How has Melton changed over the years? Expansion. There are new housing estates whichever way you turn to, more shops and a bigger variety. I think it has changed for the better. What would you change about the area if you could? With the new estates, they tend to make the roads too narrow – that would be my main criticism. I think we need both council and government to step in.

I really don’t have time for hanging – I’m too busy. I do like to get a couple of friends together

COURSES STARTING IN APRIL Aged Care | Childcare Mental Health | Disability Community Services Home & Personal Care Leisure & Health Education Support Alcohol & Other Drugs

What do you get out of volunteering with the L2P program? The satisfaction of being able to help people who weren’t as fortunate as my kids or who aren’t as fortunate as my grandchildren. I was volunteering with the Melton Community Safety Register, and at one of our meetings somebody said Djerriwarrh Health Services was looking for volunteers for this driving program, and of course I put my hand up. I love it – if I didn’t like it so much, I wouldn’t do it. You get young learner drivers who are very shy and unsure of themselves – just seeing their development over a period of time, especially developing confidence in their driving. What’s been your proudest moment during your time volunteering? I’ve had 10 young drivers get their licence – I love that. How important are volunteers to the community? I think a lot of things wouldn’t get done in the community if it weren’t for volunteers. With L2P for example, a lot of the young ones don’t have parents or vehicles available to them to learn how to drive. But driving is very important and gives them independence and the chance to find a job.

A path to self confidence Over recent weeks, Melton Specialist School students have been turning their learning to good effect. The school’s VCAL students are completing a Certificate II in Horticulture, and as part of their studies visited Yarraville Special Developmental School to build students there a special sensory garden. Horticulture teacher Heather Chamber says the students planned, designed and built the garden from scratch, recycling as many components as they could find, wrapping poles, creating a dry river bed and including musical instruments along the paths. “The students took a lot of pride in their work … as a result, their self-esteem has improved, and this steamrolls into other things,” Ms Chambers says. “The students had a brilliant time.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

The kitchen here upholds the yellow theme and has laminate-grain cabinetry, a breakfast bench, corner pantry, underbench

oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Next door to a study (or fourth bedroom), off the lounge room, the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Two more fitted bedrooms are down a rear hall, along which are a powder-blue-and-white main bathroom, separate toilet, study nook and laundry. Gas ducted heating and evaporative cooling keep the indoor climate comfy.

There’s a spot in a side yard – off the family hub – that would benefit from the inclusion of a pergola, and the good-sized backyard awaits a garden, shed or a creative project to make the place your own. A double garage and side gates allowing entry to the backyard are other noteworthy inclusions. Carole Levy 19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 4, 2017

SPORT Losing Bears win respect By Tara Murray Burnside Heights may not have come away with the four points from its Essendon District Football League division 2 season opener, but it certainly came away with some respect. It wasn’t until the final kick of the game – after the siren – that East Sunbury got grip of the Bears to seal their five-point win, 10.13 (73)-10.8 (68). To put the result into perspective, look no further than last season – the Bears lost every match, with its closest margin 68 points, and the corresponding game against the Thunder last season downed the Bears by 20 goals. Bears’ coach Aidan Stott said there were mixed feelings after the latest loss … pride in his side’s performance and what they’ve done in the off season, but shattered by the loss of a game there for the taking, with East Sunbury admitting they were lucky to get the win. “It was an absolutely epic battle from start to finish,” Stott said. “We led for the entire game, only going down with the final kick of the day … we suffered three game-ending injuries in the third quarter, and were left with just one rotation for the entire last quarter. “We thought we out-played East Sunbury for the most part of the game, and really felt we should have won.” Stott said players would learn from the result and had showed they wouldn’t be the same easy-beats they were last season. Corey Patmore kicked three goals for the Bears, while sharpshooter Joshua Covelli kicked two in his first game for the club. Steven Soto and Jordan Agnoleto were named best for the Bears. Stott said he was still unsure about the severity of injuries to Michael Krajina (ankle), Tegan Stott (knee) and Stephen Kenrick (calf), but was hopeful they would be fit to play this week. The Bears face Roxburgh Park, which lost by a point to Moonee Valley. In other division 2 matches, Keilor Park was thrashed by Northern Saints, relegated in the off season, 16.19 (115)–3.5 (23). In premier division, Keilor started its title defence with a solid 14.7 (91)–10.10 (70) win over Essendon Doutta Stars. David Gourdis kicked four goals in a best on ground performance. The season kicks off for Hillside and Taylors Lakes this weekend, with round one matches on Good Friday; Hillside plays Hadfield, Taylors Lakes faces Airport West.

Caroline Springs under-13 girls side took out the Molly Strano Cup. (Supplied)

Girls bowled over by cup Caroline Springs under-13 girls cricket team was the surprise winner of the Molly Strano Cup. Held by the Western Region Junior Cricket Association, the cup is a junior girls’ competition for teams in Melbourne’s west. Last season the cup included only three teams playing a handful of rounds – this year’s competition had six teams and 14 rounds. Caroline Springs coach Shelly Carton said it was a thrill to see the team’s development over the season. Carton stepped into the role after round four when she volunteered to help out the side. “The aim was to just be able to play regular cricket each week and have fun and learn skills along the way,” she said. Caroline Springs needed to win in the final round to make the final. It defeated Keilor Red to set up a grand final against Sanctuary Lakes. Sanctuary Lakes had defeated Caroline Springs twice during the season, but the Falcons were in form for the grand final and won by 50 runs. “They really lifted and everyone was doing the things they’d learnt during the season,” Carton said. “The team worked well together. They were really excited to win and were jumping and up and down.” Carton said regardless of the result, the girls were already winners as their skills had developed so much during the season. The girls team was the only Caroline Springs cricket side to win a premiership this season. The club is aiming to develop the girls cricket program and wants to add an under-15 team next season. Darley’s first grand final ends in disappointment It wasn’t Darley’s day in the Ballarat Cricket Association grand final. The Lions had a task in front of them going into the second weekend of the grand final against Wendouree, having conceded first innings points. With a first innings deficit of 65 runs, the Lions needed wickets early on day two. But it wasn’t to be – the Red Caps were 5-225 overnight, with a lead of 290 runs. Lions’ coach Heath Pritchard said they considered ending the game after a tough day in the field on Saturday, but the playing group was determined to have another crack on Sunday morning. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 4, 2017

“We battled hard on a pitch that was really flat,” he said. “I didn’t think we bowled that bad and they are a good batting side. They didn’t give us any chances. “The boys wanted to have a crack for as long as possible. Once it got to over seven runs an over and we still hadn’t got them out it was getting tough.” When the game was called off, Wendouree was 7-276 with a lead of 341 runs just before tea on day four. The Lions shared the wickets around with Ben Longhurst and Sajith Rupasingha taking two each. While disappointed with the result, Pritchard

said he couldn’t be prouder of what the club has achieved the past two seasons. “The club had never been in a Ballarat cricket grand final,” he said. “Wendouree is always in finals and it wasn’t that long ago they won five premierships in a row. “We were slightly disappointed with the way we batted. But I don’t think the scores reflected the closeness of the game and we needed a bit of luck but didn’t get it.” Pritchard said the next step for the club was to try to keep the playing group together and bring in some new players to add some depth in the second, third and fourth sides. Pritchard, who coached the side the past

two seasons, won’t coach next season. He had told the club in December that would be the case and he plans to spend more time with his family. As for playing on and the captaincy? “When I came to the club I was only going to play and be captain, but they needed a coach,” he said. “I had told my wife that I wouldn’t coach again and I coached for two more years. “I’ll have a break and let the body recover before I make a decision. I’m 40 and coming to the end of my career.” Tara Murray

Departures push young Diggers to the next level Coming off two premierships last season, Diggers Rest coach Shaun Sims says there’s a different feeling heading into this season’s Riddell District Football League competition. But the Burras know last year’s senior and reserves success means little as the new season dawns. “It is a different feeling, but you [have to] refocus pretty quickly,” Sims said. “You can’t let it run your season. “It’s about refocusing and putting ourselves in the best possible position again.” The Burras’ senior side will be a slightly different line-up from last year, with nearly a quarter of its premiership players not returning.

“Jase Williams has gone on to play at a higher level,” Sims said. “Luke Smailes has moved to Sydney and Cole Laurie has gone to Port Douglas. Shane Marchewka who played ruck in the grand final, isn’t going on. “They’re things you can’t do anything about … Tom Evans received an offer too good to refuse.” Sims said that with the departures, the club would field a younger side than it had in the past couple of years. He said players who step up into the senior side deserve the opportunities they get. “Chris Lawton and Corey Wright are expected to be more permanent fixtures this year … there’s going to be times when

our ruckman, centre half-forward and full forward will be under 20.” Another young player the Burras expect to see a lot of is Lachlan Langford, who has spent the past two years on Hawthorn’s rookie list. Langford followed in the footsteps of his father and brother, who both played for Hawthorn. Tom Glesson will captain the side after Stuart Clarke stepped down from the role. “It’s a bit more responsibility for Tom, and he’ll take it on with both hands. I think it’ll help him improve his footy,” Sims said. The Burras start the season on April 8 against Riddell in a rematch of last season’s grand final.

Western Jets power up By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets bounced back from an opening round defeat in the sweetest possible way thrashing rivals Calder Cannons by 31 points in the TAC Cup second round at Highgate Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Jets’ coach Torin Baker was thrilled his team could reap the rewards of hard work after a first round slip-up. “It was nice for the boys to get some reward after just dipping out [in a narrow loss to the Northern Knights] last week,” he said. “There’s a healthy respect [between the Jets and Calder] because a lot of the players know one another, they go to school with one another, and they play in local football competitions with and against each other. “It’s a good healthy rivalry that we’ve got, but we certainly respect the Cannons for the way they go about their footy.” It was a more refined Western Jets that took to the field on Saturday. Just like the week before, the Jets enjoyed the lion’s share of the midfield battle, but this time they made it count, with much better transition from midfield to attack. “The midfield battle was probably the telling factor in the game,” Baker said. “Over the course of the day, we were consistently winning the clearance battle … a number of our mids had really solid games, so they generated enough ball forward for us. “Whereas last week we didn’t make the most of our inside 50 entries early, this week we were at least kicking to our forwards’ advantage. “We were much more dangerous as a forward group. Playing together another week just helped with that chemistry.” Judah Dundon has started the season on fire for the Western Jets, and was once again a driving force with his precision kicking. “His kicking has been something we’ve relied on from a team point of view,” Baker said. “He’s one who is consistently hitting targets for us, which is pleasing.” Lachlan Fogarty showed why he is on course for a big say in destiny of Vic Metro’s under-18 national championships. Fogarty’s ability to work hard both ways has endeared him to his coach and his teammates. “He had a fantastic game again,” Baker said. “It’s his work rate, pressure on the opposition and ability to win clearances. “We won’t have Lachie until the last two games of the year now … he’s got the AFL Academy game this weekend, and then we’ll break for Easter and school football will start. “He’ll play for five or six weeks, then he’ll go on and play for Vic Metro at the national championships, and go back to school footy,” Fogarty said. Xavier O’Halloran caught the eye in just his second game for the Jets at TAC Cup level, while Cameron Rayner, Harrison Bult and Zak Butters were among the best.

The two have played each other in round one the past two seasons, with the Burras winning both clashes. Sims said, despite breaking their premiership drought, nothing has changed for Diggers Rest. “We have high expectations every year … our main aim is to play finals and finish as high as possible … we’ll focus on what we can control.” In other round one matches, Wallan hosts Macedon, Lancefield takes on Woodend-Hesket and Rupertswood and Broadford will do battle. Meanwhile, Melton Centrals face Rockbank, and Sunbury Kangaroos face Romsey in night matches. Tara Murray

Burkett takes McIntyre Cup honours Romsey’s Chris Burkett took out the Sullivan Medal as Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s best player for the 2016-17 season. The Romsey playing captain-coach led the count for most of the night, finishing two votes ahead of Riddell skipper Mick Allen. Darren Quarrell finished third. Burkett averaged nearly 50 with the bat and took 21 wickets for the season. He also won the McIntyre Cup aggregate award, and was named skipper of the McIntyre Cup team of the year, with Mick Allen named vice-captain. Premiers Gisborne had the most representatives named in the cup team, with Jason Wilson, Beau Valka and Jay King. Others named were Riddell’s Haydn Ross, Diggers Rest Bulla’s Steven Fogarty and Quarrell, Woodend’s Michael Nalesnyik and Tom Robson, and Bacchus Marsh’s Madushanka Ekanayaka and Mili Sepala.

Melton derby has Fev factor

There was some serious hang time for Western Jets’ Buku Khamis and Calder Cannons’ Mason Fletcher. (Damian Visentini)

Jacob Smith, the son of former Western Bulldogs’ star Rohan, put a goal on the scoreboard. Jake Hazik was the Jets’ only multiple goalkicker with two, which is no surprise

considering his side only managed to turn 11 of 30 scoring shots into goals. Western Jets will host Sandringham Dragons at Burbank Oval in Williamstown on Saturday at 11am.

Melton derbies will kick off the Ballarat Football Netball League season on Saturday. Melton South will host Melton in both football and netball matches in the only BFNL fixtures for the weekend. Already a big match-up every year, the senior football match will have extra spice with former AFL star Brendan Fevola making his debut for the Panthers as both player and co-coach. The Panthers have been one of the busiest teams in the off season, adding four former AFL players Fevola, Tayte Pears, Nick Kommer and Mitch Banner. With a big crowd expected, the Panthers have decided not to allow parking in the ground for the safety of supporters. Spectators will be able to park about 300 metres from the ground, with Melton council giving the club permission to use Police Park on McKenzie Street for parking. Club secretary Tam Watkins said it was likely this parking arrangement would be in place for other big games, including Good Friday against Sunbury Lions and Anzac Day against North Ballarat City. Darley and Bacchus Marsh will start their seasons on April 23. Tara Murray 45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 4, 2017
