Ballan wins CFA centre Ballan will be home to the new Country Fire Authority training centre. The state government announced on Monday its plans for the new facility, two years after the closure of the toxic Fiskville centre. It will be built on a 35-hectare site on the corner of Gillespies Lane and Ingliston Road – east of the Ballan Industrial Estate, and 10 kilometres from Fiskville. Design and planning works are expected to start soon, and building should begin in the first half of next year. The state government committed $31 million in its 2016-17 budget to buy land and build the new facility in the Central Highlands region, following the closure of the Fiskville centre. There has been intense community pressure on the state government and Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) to build the new centre in Ballan, which has lost at least $16 million from the local economy as a result of Fiskville’s closure. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino conceded there had been a “gap in [CFA] training” over the past two years and the Ballan community was reeling from the loss of one of the main employers in the region. The new centre will be lead by the CFA, but emergency services personnel from across the state, including SES and Ambulance Victoria, will also train there. “We’re trying to ensure there are state-of-the-art facilities delivering the training our firefighters need,” Mr Merlino said. “This is about delivering as close to real-world training as we can.”
Mr Merlino said a “number” of sites in the Moorabool shire had been considered, but having a training facility in Ballan was a “clear desire” for the community and council. Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said following close consultation, authorities very quickly realised the impact the closure of Fisvkille had had on the community.
‘‘
It’s a new era, a new era of training
’’
- Craig Lapsley
He reassured the community there would be no repeat of Fiskville – where firefighters were exposed to chemicals that likely cause cancer – as the EMV and CFA were building to newer standards, using the latest technology. “[The closure of Fiskville] has had an inconvenience, but the main thing is we’re now looking forward – it’s a new era, a new era of training for the Central Highlands region and we’ll be bringing the best types of training to be the safest training,” he said. Moorabool council chief executive Rob Croxford welcomed the announcement. He said many locals had lost their jobs after the closure of Fiskville and the knock-on effect to businesses in Ballan was profound. Ballan fire brigade lieutenant Ian Ireland said he was pleased the state government had committed to building the facility. He said since the closure of Fiskville, CFA volunteers were travelling up to six hours a day for training.

Brew blends down to a tea Melissa Khonsavang loves brewing tea and sharing it with the rest of the world. When the Caroline Springs woman joined a mother’s group following the birth of her daughter more than three years ago, she would blend different herbs and bring them along to meetings. “And then the mothers started asking me to make teas so they can give it as gifts,” Ms Khonsavang says. She’ll showcase her creative blends at the Melbourne Tea Festival this weekend, from 9am-4pm on Saturday, May 20 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, 2 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne. Train boost for Caroline Springs By Alexandra Laskie The number of trains stopping at Caroline Springs station will double when a new V/Line timetable comes into effect in August. The state government released the new timetable last week which will deliver an extra 142 services across the network from August 27. Due to demand for services at Caroline Springs station, all Ballarat line trains will stop at the station between 9am and 4pm. Currently only about half of all trains departing Bacchus Marsh stop at Caroline

Springs but once the new timetable comes into effect, all trains departing Bacchus March and Wendouree will stop at the new station during the day. Caroline Springs will also get five extra services on Saturdays and four on Sundays that
will see the frequency between weekend trains whittled down from 90 to 60 minutes. A new evening service will run on weeknights and a late night service that currently operates on Fridays will run every night of the week. Deer Park station will also benefit from the timetable changes. More off-peak and weekend services on the Geelong line will stop there, giving Deer Park commuters an extra 200 services each week. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the new V/Line timetable was a “massive win for local passengers”.
“We’re funding and delivering more services while we get on with our $518 million upgrade of the Ballarat line to run more trains, more often through Melbourne’s west,” she said. The upgrade is duplicating a 17-kilometre section of single track between Deer Park and Melton to allow for the electrification of the train line to Melton. Completion is tipped for late 2019. As part of the new timetable, some services will depart earlier or later and have different stopping patterns. New train timetables will be available on the V/Line website in late July.
Drone prison ban takes off
Fashioned from fun
Drones will be banned from being used near jails after several were spotted near the three Ravenhall prisons. A drone was also intercepted three years ago allegedly being used to smuggle drugs. The state government introduced changes to the Corrections Act 1986 last week that will make it an offence to intentionally or recklessly operate a drone at or near a prison, punishable by up to two years’ jail. The changes follow a number of drone sightings near the Melbourne Assessment Prison, Metropolitan Remand Centre, Dame Phyllis Frost Centre and the new Ravenhall prison. Three years ago, a man was charged after allegedly using a drone to smuggle drugs into the Metropolitan Remand Centre. The charges were later dropped. A justice department spokesman said that while there hadn’t been any other incidents of people attempting to use drones to smuggle contraband into prisons, the new law would help boost the security and prevent future incidents. Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney said drones posed a “significant risk” to prisons. “If someone wants to use a drone to drop contraband into a prison they might find themselves on the wrong side of the wall,” Ms Tierney said. “We’re doing everything we can to stop contraband being smuggled into prison, which will make them safer for both staff and inmates. “We’re sending a very strong message to anyone thinking of new ways to smuggle in contraband – you will be caught.”
When Kris Tetis looks at a lampshade, she sees it not for what it is, but what it can become – a funky headpiece, or maybe part of a quirky alter-ego costume. In this “throwaway” society, where items are discarded as quickly as they’re bought, Ms Tetis is committed to preserving wearable art. “This is my way of taking care of my brain, heart and soul,” she says. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to immerse yourself in art.” You’ll probably find Ms Tetis rummaging through op shop gems, working out ways to upcycle them, and admiring the quality and effort gone into producing those vintage pieces. And if she’s not at an op shop, she’s probably in costume “pretending to be someone else” or wearing pieces that reflect her mood to a tee. Ms Tetis will be one of two people running clothes-making workshops in the lead-up to the Melton South Dream Big Festival. The workshops, aimed at helping teenagers create fashion pieces from recycled material, will run over the next few months. And Ms Tetis is asking those who can sew, knit, design and get crafty to help mentor the youth. “The older community has so many skills – there are seamstresses, leather cutters, crochet experts – and to have that one-on-one experience rather than watching a Youtube video is invaluable,” Ms Tetis said. The workshops will run from 4-5.30pm every Wednesday in May and June at the Melton Uniting Church Op Shop, 16 Brooklyn Road, Melton South. Workshop dates for June to September will be released soon. Lake springs to life A Caroline Springs lake that was drained earlier this year as part of a police investigation has been re-filled months ahead of schedule. More than 25 megalitres of water – equivalent to 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools – has been “harvested” into Spring Lake using rainwater from nearby Serpentine Lake, known locally as Lake Logan. The arduous task of refilling Spring Lake started in mid-February, and there were fears the lake could take years to refill. However, Melbourne Water has confirmed the “complex” task of refilling the lake to pre-January levels was completed less than a fortnight ago thanks to a wetter-than-average autumn. Western regional services manager Emily Phillips said crews were on site weekly, with
pumps and pipes, moving stormwater from Lake Logan – which is shallow and has a large catchment area – to Spring Lake. “Our stormwater harvesting efforts from the surrounding lake systems were assisted by good recent rainfall,” Ms Phillips said. “This has meant we have been able to transfer significant amounts of surplus stormwater into Spring Lake and return to normal levels sooner than predicted, while still ensuring surrounding lakes do not drop below normal levels.” Wildlife and migratory birds have already returned to the lake, Ms Phillips said, with the area now returning to its former glory. Lion park folklore inspires film By Esther Lauaki A Bacchus Marsh filmmaker wants to capture the town’s wild side – and he needs help from the locals. Darcy Prendergast is embarking on a self-funded documentary about the old Bacchus Marsh Lion Safari that thrived in the 1970s and the incidents that lead to its demise. “I’m looking for old video footage from the lion park days or home footage that people may have taken whilst visiting there,” Mr Prendergast said. The drive-through safari was run by Doug Ashton, patriarch of the family-run Ashton’s Circus, but the park closed its gates after legislative changes in 1985 made it harder for it to turn a profit. A series of fatal attacks also stained the park’s history. They included a 12-year-old boy reportedly being killed by a Lion in the late 1970s. Mr Prendergast said he also wanted to portray his personal connection to the historic park where his father worked as a young man. “He was 17 when he first started and the narrative of my film will lean on his memories and tales as the structural backbone,” Darcy said. “But the film will also look at the wider reach of the park. I grew up in Bacchus Marsh and, strangely, few people of my generation even know the lion safari park existed. “The internet has very little information about it. There are only a handful of souvenirs now floating about – it’s almost become a thing of folklore. “But for better or worse it existed, and I want to document as best I can that period of Bacchus Marsh history which I personally think is one of the craziest things about this town.” For information, or if you have a lead, email darcy@ohyeahwow.com

Police are hunting for two armed robbers who held up a Melton supermarket last month. The pair were armed with crowbars and had their faces covered when they entered IGA on High Street about 9.40pm on Friday, March 31. Police say a third man was waiting in a dark-coloured hatchback parked at the front of the store. All three men fled the scene in the car. The two attackers jumped a counter, with customers nearby, stole three register trays containing cash and damaged drawers. A store spokesman said the staff were shaken by the incident. “I was concerned for the team,” the spokesman said. “The team is everything – you want them to be safe first and foremost, and have them think they’re working in a safe environment. “The ones who were here were shaken up but we’ve provided excellent support … They’re all back at work.”

But council community planning manager Matthew Wilson said the state and federal governments must invest in infrastructure services and public transport, support local schools to integrate health into its curriculum, and invest in local employment opportunities. “Residents living in the City of Melton are currently experiencing a lower quality of life than those living in the inner suburbs due to an imbalance of basic services and infrastructure,” Mr Wilson said. Festival of words Bookworms, literary geniuses and famous authors will descend on Bacchus Marsh this weekend. The inaugural Moorabool Festival of Stories will showcase the shire’s “rich storytelling culture”, bring together some of Australia’s award-winning authors, and invest in the future of local writers. Maddingley author Allyse Near will bring festival-goers into her world of gothic fairytales and speak on a panel about her top writing tips. Near published her first young adult fiction story, Fairytale of Wilde Girls, in 2013. She says her love for creative writing was sparked by her love for reading. Her top tip for budding writers? “It’s only your own insecurity that can
stop you – everything else is just an excuse.” Moorabool Writers Craft committee member, and one of the festival organisers, Wayne Marshall said the group was initially planning a small event, but it had “just snowballed into something big”. The group secured Miles Franklin-winning author A.S. Patrić and Victorian Premier’s Literary Award winner Jan Harper to speak. The festival will run from 10am-4.30pm on Saturday, May 20 at the Lerderderg library, 215 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. Details: visitmoorabool.vic.gov.au/festivalofst ories Sumeyya Ilanbey

A third of Melton children are either overweight or obese, while more than two-thirds of the municipality’s adult population are failing to get in enough exercise, according to new data. Australia’s Health Tracker has painted a bleak picture of Melbourne’s health divide – the wealthier you are, the healthier you are. More than 15 per cent of people living in the 3337 postcode (which includes Melton, Melton South and Rockbank) consume alcohol at levels considered to be risky to health; 32 per cent of adults have high cholesterol; and 24 per cent have high blood pressure. Australian Health Policy Collaboration’s Professor Rosemary Calder isn’t surprised by the findings. “But I’m still dismayed at the extent to which the data tells a very strong story about the growing risk in the area,” she said. “Outer suburbs are generally commuter suburbs – out of your front door into a car, out of your car into the office. We know commuting is one of the major impacts on physical activity.” Lower socio-economic areas are also likely to have less outdoor spaces and the adults are less likely to have time to exercise because of long-commuting hours, according to Professor Calder. Local, state and federal governments all have a role to play in improving its population’s health, she said. Local governments, for instance, need to find a space for children to be dropped off to walk to school, state governments need to purchase that land, while
the federal government must resource schools adequately to fund these types of programs. “It’s not hard to do and it’s critically important to do,” Professor Calder said. “But nationally we only spend 1.5 per cent of expenditure on prevention, and that’s a big problem. We need a much bigger investment.” Melton council is involved in a number of programs to promote healthy eating and physical exercise, including the Heart Foundation walking groups, Sons of the West men’s health program, and the annual ‘Get Active’ initiative.

Asbestos costs outrage By Sumeyya Ilanbey Moorabool ratepayers forked out more than $40,000 last year to have illegally dumped asbestos cleaned up from roadsides. Moorabool council was forced to hire contractors on eight occasions to have asbestos removed. It has identified Ingliston Road, between Ballan and Bacchus Marsh, as being a “major hotspot”. Illegal dumping of rubbish has been an ongoing issue for the council, but there has been a significant spike in illegally dumped asbestos in the past two years. Moorabool mayor David Edwards is calling on the community to help the council find the offenders. He said the community had borne the “significant environmental and financial cost” of asbestos illegally dumped on roadsides. “[This] is costing ratepayers large sums of money as council has to ring a special contractor to remove and correctly dispose of the asbestos.” Environment Protection Authority’s Chris Webb said that in the past year, the watchdog received two reports of asbestos dumping in Moorabool. Both reports were referred to Parks Victoria and the Moorabool council for clean-up. The culprits could not be identified. Mr Webb said the EPA investigated more than 220 cases of illegal dumping across the state during the 2015-16 financial year, issuing 98 remedial notices. Of those, about 16 were for asbestos-related issues. “Dumping asbestos waste is illegal, and disposal must only be at a site licensed by EPA to accept waste asbestos,” Mr Webb said. “Asbestos must be removed, handled, transported and disposed of with care to

minimise risk to the individual and the broader community. When disturbed, it produces a dust that may contain asbestos fibres. “Fibres breathed into the lungs can cause a range of health problems, including asbestosis,
lung cancer and mesothelioma.” Asbestos Diseases Research Institute’s Victoria Keena said Australia had one of the highest rates of malignant mesothelioma and exposure to asbestos was the only known cause.
Vale the ‘soul of Ballan’ Roy Huggins was one of those rare gems – an “extraordinary” man who dedicated his life to preserving history and heritage. His rooms were filled with old books and his mind brimming with knowledge about Ballan’s deep history. He was a man who wanted to know about “the birth of something, not just its teenage years”. If you wanted to find out about the history of a building, Roy was the man to go to – he’d tell you on the spot, according to those who knew him. The well-respected 92-year-old died after his mobility scooter tipped as it crossed a gutter last Wednesday. Mr Huggins was travelling north on Cowie Street about 3pm when the accident occurred. He suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital but died on Thursday morning. Roy’s friend, Paul Tatchell, remembered the elderly man as a “warm soul” who would be missed dearly in the community. “Roy was independent, strong,” Cr Tatchell said. “He lived through some extraordinary periods of time – he’d seen the best and worst of times in Australia. “But he was one of those great Australians – the ones who keep a humble and low profile but make this country great. He actually cared and gave a stuff. “And he always made it very clear that you can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve come from.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Lara Carli Watts Ward
Amongst the greatest pleasures I have as Mayor, are the multiple opportunities I have to meet and speak with members of our community.
It’s an exciting time for Watts Ward residents with a number of key infrastructure projects being implemented over the next financial year.
Whether I’m attending the launch of a new facility, meeting one-on-one with ¡ ¢ £ ¤ or attending community events, I welcome the chance to chat with residents, listen to their thoughts and aspirations for our municipality; seek advice from those in the know; and generally make myself available to everyone who calls the City of Melton home.
A huge coup for the municipality was the inclusion of the duplication of Hume Drive from Overton Lea Boulevard and Calder Park Drive in the 2017/2018 Council budget. Construction of the 1.3km project will also see the installation ¡ ¡ £ ± £ ²¡ ±¤ ³ ¢± ´ µ ¤ µ £ ¶ ·¸¢ many residents will be ecstatic to see improvements on this stretch of road, especially the relief from the congestion it will provide during peak times.

Ambos meet code 1 target
‘‘
We know, however, that more needs to be done
’’
- Graeme Parker
Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the state government was investing in the ambulance service to meet the “record demand” on the health system. But the opposition accused the government of “moving the goal posts” on measuring response times following changes to the code 1 criteria. “The announcement [about faster response times] doesn’t do anything to change the trend for residents in the west,” opposition spokeswoman Margaret Fitzherbert said. “Today, fewer ambulances are being sent to code 1 emergencies compared to a year ago, and that means fewer Victorians are getting the most urgent response in a medical emergency.”
Country star on the rise Chris Williams draws inspiration from anywhere and anyone. But his debut single Shining On You was inspired by his daughter. “The song is about being yourself, not being ashamed of who you are and being true to yourself,” Mr Williams says. The 38-year-old Melton man has been playing the guitar since he was 12, but over the past few years has started writing his own country music. In the past 12 months he’s released two singles, both of which are in the Top 40 Australian Country Tracks chart, and is in the midst of
planning an album. He’s also been nominated as the ‘most popular independent male artist’ in the Indie Country Music Australia awards. “I’m pretty overwhelmed and thankful for all the support this early on,” Mr Williams says. “I wasn’t expecting it – not at all. But it’s something that spurs me on to keep creating music and keeping following the passion.” The winners of the Indie Country Music Australia awards will be announced at the Tamworth Country Music Festival next year. Paramedics are getting to life-threatening emergencies in Melton faster, with response times falling under 12 minutes for the first time in at least four years. New service performance figures from Ambulance Victoria reveal the average response to code 1 Melton emergencies in the three months to March was 11 minutes and 57 seconds, down from 13 minutes and 49 seconds the quarter before. Paramedics responded to 78.3 per cent of code 1 emergencies in Melton within the target 15 minutes. Code 1 call-outs require urgent paramedic and hospitalisation, including a “lights and sirens” response. The number of code 1 emergencies in Melton fell from 1554 in the previous quarter to 1373 in the March quarter. In Moorabool, paramedics responded to 62 per cent of code 1 call-outs in under 15 minutes in the March quarter, with an average response time of 14 minutes and 26 seconds. That was a significant improvement from previous quarters in which the response time hovered around 16 and 17 minutes. Ambulance Victoria acting regional director Graeme Parker attributed the significant improvements to new vehicles, upgraded branches and changes to the criteria for dispatching code 1 ambulances. “We know, however, that more needs to be done to meet our targets and community expectations and are committed to continued improvement,” Mr Parker said.
“The government has invested $500 million in our ambulance service to ensure our response continues to be quicker to patients who need us the most.” Ambulance Victoria recently announced a new 24-hour ambulance service in Exford, with 14 full-time paramedics to service the area. Work has started on a new purpose-built Melton branch, which is expected to be finished by next year. (Dennis Manktelow)

It turns out a brief conversation really can change minds, especially if it is an open and honest one where we all have freedom to speak and it’s not one sided … And it was genuinely welcome. People were thanking me, they were hugging me at the end, and inviting me back more to help their workplace and help others.
My ex-wife and her family have been in Melton for many decades and when I migrated to Australia, from the United States 15 years ago to be with her, we settled here as well. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? I love that the City of Melton borders on regional and metropolitan Melbourne. I spend so much of my time in the CBD and when the weekends come I have my small town life with my kids.

comments. As confronting as it sounds this is the reality in the transgender community. Even worse, transgender people have been refused medical care, kicked out of their jobs and experienced a loss of friends and family. I was experiencing this first-hand. I took my situation at the time and used it as an example when speaking to other transgender people as well as employers. I asked what had been done up until that point? How had the
Trust me I was shocked and asked “I can be on that?!” here I was on a list with Magda Szubanski and Penny Wong as a trans woman making a difference for the LGBTI Community. My girlfriends and I laughed every time we went out because they were going out for the night with a “power lesbian” every time we had drinks or if they came with me as a plus-one anywhere, which I love sharing the experiences with each of my friends. So many things motivate me – my daughters, my friends, the people who thank me. It is that sense of community knowing I am making that difference for others. I am determined at times and refuse to be told no. Get it right the first time with
John Girardi’s mother, Anna, with her pizza oven. (Marco De Luca)
Melton’s slice of heaven When John Girardi’s father died, he wanted to honour his memory by creating something special for his mother. So 12 months ago, Mr Girardi and his brother-in-law, Glenn Jackson, started work on a pizza oven at her Melton home. “It meant that every three to four weeks, we would have a working bee and go to mum’s house for dinner,” Mr Girardi said. “And now it’s a magnet for bringing people to her house. She lives on her own, so this was an incentive for people to come around.” Family and friends are reaping the rewards
of the pizza oven, which Mr Girardi is adamant will stand the test of time. They’ve made pizzas and roasts, while the family celebrated Mother’s Day with a big feast at the Melton home. “My mum has always been very gregarious,” Mr Girardi said. “She has a very outgoing personality … when I told mum about building a pizza oven for her, she was supportive but said she didn’t want to pay for it. “We’re all in pretty much agreement – dad wouldn’t have let us do it.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is not one to horse around about burgers… Based on its proximity to Flemington racecourse and location on Racecourse Road, this flashy new burger joint – right opposite the Doutta Galla pub – has enthusiastically embraced a theme based around horse racing. From the name and onwards, it’s all very horsey. There’s garish, internal neon signs proclaiming “feeling lucky?” and “burgers so good you’d put your house on”. The burgers themselves sport the names of famous steeds of the past. And the staff are all wearing T-shirts telling you they’re stewards – just in case you miss the drift. It all seems a bit, well, lame to me – but then, I’m in no way a fan of horse racing. The lack of subtlety doesn’t stop with the repeated racing motifs – the place is bright and loud, the music overbearingly so. But I’m probably not in the focus demographic for such a place. It’s been open just a little while and has been busy the whole time, Uber bags by the dozen heading out the door from day one. They’ve even had to hang up the “sold out” sign on occasion. We do the burgers and sides routine with happy results. The Phar Lap ($11) is one step up from the basic cheeseburger (the Saintly, $8). Phar Lap tastes fine with its 120g patty, cheese, Straight Six sauce, pickles, onion, lettuce and tomato.
STRAIGHT SIX Address: 336 Racecourse Road, Flemington Phone: 9376 2333 But it’s made for those of medium appetite only – it’s gone in a flash. If you’re wanting something with more heft, go for the Think Big ($14). The double 100g patties, double cheese, excellent bacon, spicy Straight Six sauce, jalapenos and onion combine to create a beaut burger. A small serve of beer-battered onion rings is generous for the $4 asking price. They’re well cooked, but oh-so-verydecadently rich … more like beer-battered batter than onion rings. They’re good, though, if that’s your thing. The chips – a small serve for $4 – are also a fine deal. Perhaps it’s all about – or much about – timing and location. And perhaps pizzazz, too. A year or so ago, a burger enterprise arose further along Racecourse Road, folding quietly after a few months having made no impression whatsoever. Straight Six, by comparison, has been an instant hit. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

Set in an attractive pocket of Eynesbury with a handsome facade and on about 577 square metres is this great near-new house. Enter to a light, fully tiled hall. The main bedroom is carpeted and has a walk-in wardrobe and enviable en suite. Two other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and carpeting. Featuring two separate living zones, this house has an open, easy-to-navigate floorplan with feature floating walls and plasterwork creating an elegant tone. The central kitchen has composite stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances and mixer tap. It overlooks the family-meals room with feature wall. Sliding doors lead to the well-maintained, fully finished alfresco area. The backyard has a great lawned area. Other features include ducted heating, evaporative cooling, double garage and close proximity to the golf course.
The floorplan of this Melton property has three good-sized fitted bedrooms to one end of the property, with a central kitchen and living zone at the front of the house. It is set on a decent sized block and the interior spaces have been updated by way of hardwood flooring in the living room and new carpet in the bedrooms. The outdoor spaces offer opportunity to extend or re-develop (STCA). Gentle modernising is all that is needed to create a fantastic place to call home. It’s perfect for down-sizers, young families or investors looking for a great rental property.

This four bedroom house is on about 790 square metres in a pocket of Melton West that is close to shops, parkland and schools. The layout is simple and practical. The main bedroom (with hard wearing charcoal-coloured carpet a walk-in wardrobe and en suite) is to the right of the tiled hallway. Three further bedrooms with built-in wardrobes follow, and the main living zone is at the rear of the house. The open-plan kitchen and family-meals area gets plenty of natural light. The kitchen has loads of pantry space and overlooks the living room. Sliding doors open to the landscaped backyard. There’s ducted heating, a split-system and double garage with internal access.
This house packs a punch, with features including air-conditioning, built-in robes in all bedrooms, polished timber floorboards, separate lounge and dining rooms and a lovely garden. With three bedrooms, this house has a neat and tidy no-fuss floor plan perfect for downsizers, investors or even a young family wanting a property they can build upon at their own pace. On about 600 square metres in an established pocket of Melton and close to all there is to love about this area, the house has beautiful features such as the period-style gas heater with mid-century surround. It’s within walking distance of Melton train station, has great vehicle access to the single garage at the rear of the property and is close to Coburn Primary School and Station Square shopping centre.

area, large kitchen and a carpeted family room tucked to the side. A big window down to floor level admits streams of light into the kitchen, which has off-white cabinetry and splashback tiles, mottled-grey laminate benchtops, two-door pantry, an island bench and a dishwasher. The next-door laundry has a closet. The four bedrooms are upstairs, as are the main bathroom, separate toilet and walk-in linen closet. Two of the secondary bedrooms have walk-in wardrobes, the other a built-in. The L-shaped main bedroom has
four mirrored doors concealing robes, and the spacious en suite has dual basins. An open study, opposite a powder room, is along the entry walkway, and there’s under-stair storage space. Out back, a gabled pergola above stamped-concrete faces a backyard replete with goodies. A chook house and vegie gardens start the nature’s bounty journey, and fruit trees continue it – you’ll find blood plum, William pear, apple, fig, lemon, mandarin and olive trees. Renovating? Make sure all your insurance bases are covered As the price of housing in Melbourne continues to head north – the market grew by 16 per cent last year – many homeowners who may have once chosen to move to gain extra space for growing families are opting to renovate or extend. Experts say this is a sound financial choice, but while there are many advantages to improving rather than moving, there are also some pitfalls. One that can be easily overlooked is your insurance cover during any makeover.
‘‘
If something goes awry during the process, you might not be able to make an [insurance] claim …

1. Your insurer needs to be notified if you undertake a renovation because it may not be covered under your policy. If something goes awry during the process, you might not be able to make a claim if your insurer has not been informed. Some policies need to list any building works. 2. If you decide to move out during the renovation, check your policy – some policies lapse if homeowners vacate for more than 60 days. 3. Most policies don’t cover you if you carry out the renovation or act as project manager yourself. You may need builders insurance on top of home and contents cover. 4. You need to revise your cover once a renovation is completed to reflect the new value of your home. 5. If your builder hasn’t insured your

project costing more than $12,000 – which is compulsory – and they fail to complete the work or it’s defective, you will be without protection. It’s essential to check
the status of your builder’s insurance. Home renovators need to understand just what is and isn’t covered under their policies and make adjustments if
necessary to cover all bases. It’s a big mistake to assume all is well when it may very well not be. Carole Levy

SPORT Melton’s rugby Warriors find promotion a hard road Promotion to a higher grade is proving every bit the challenge the Melton Rugby Union Club was expecting. But the Warriors are not entirely out of their depth after being promoted to the top level of the Victoria Rugby Union’s second division. The Warriors, who secured promotion after finish runners-up in 2B last season, have won two of their first four games and are fourth on the ladder, only percentage behind third-placed Shepparton. In the two games they’ve lost, including Saturday’s 26-24 loss to Bendigo, the side has been competitive. Warriors vice-president Liam Devlin said the mixed results were nothing they had not been expecting.
“We beat Ballarat, which was revenge for last season’s grand final loss,” he said. “There’s been a lot more travel, which we admit has been a challenge. “Most of the teams in the competition are regional sides. It is a harder competition than last season – the quality and standard of the teams has improved. “The focus each week has been getting a competitive side on the park. The club is doing extremely well.” Devlin said the Warriors’ next run of matches would include several games at home, which would help their cause. Melton will play Shepparton this week at home. “Hopefully we’ll get back to winning some more games,” Devlin said.
Melton players such as Joseph Seumanutafa are experiencing a challenging season. (Shawn Smits)
“Against Bendigo we only had 14 players travel. Getting sides together to travel is harder than when playing at home. Once we are home. I think we’re a more competitive side.”

It was a tough day for Melton Centrals in AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League on Saturday. Placed in division 1 after the qualifying rounds, Centrals struggled to match Redan, losing 11.11 (77)-0.0 (0). Rachael Jackson and Rebecca Matthews were best for Centrals. In division 2, Bacchus Marsh lost to Drysdale Hawks 10.11 (71)-2.5 (17). Taylor Smith and Ashley Kelb were the goalscorers, with Zhoe Clarke their best.
By Tara Murray An experienced and patient Riddell District Netball League side has come out on top against West Gippsland. But while the scoreboard showed an easy 48-37 win for the home side, it was anything but in Saturday’s AFL Victoria WorkSafe Country Championships match. The RDNL’s less-than-ideal lead-up to the match involved a single training session. Diggers Rest duo Toni Lind and Natasha Chokljat pulled out during the week due to injuries. With the need for an extra mid-courter, Romsey’s Cayley Armstrong became a late inclusion. Three players were on minute restrictions due to their Victorian Netball League commitments, meaning they could only play half games. RDNL playing coach Ciara Stewart said experience played a major role in adjusting to the late changes and securing the win. Stewart, wing attack, said she and goaler Amy Carroll found the attention of the West Gippsland defence frustrating. “West Gippsland had a really strong defence,” she said. “They had a brand new line-up, too, and met for the first time on the morning of the game. “But we were a more experienced team and it came in handy as we knew how to work through things.” The RDNL started the better of the two teams and led 15-7 at quarter-time, but Stewart wasn’t happy. “It was a good scoreline, but we didn’t play great,” she said. “With only one training session, the attacking line-up took a while to get together. Prue [Stanley] started in centre and she hadn’t been able to get to training. “We could have scored 25 goals in the first quarter.” Stewart stayed with the same line-up in the second quarter and the lead was extended. She made several changes at the main break. Once that line-up settled, the lead continued to grow. With five minutes remaining, Stewart shuffled the line-up again. “No one was benched and there was no poor performers – we just wanted everyone to get court time,” Stewart said. “That line-up wasn’t effective and that was the reason we lost the last quarter, but it didn’t matter as we had the game sewn up.” Diggers Rest coach Amy Carroll was awarded the RDNL’s official best-on-court medal for her performance in goals. Captain Katie Clarke was awarded best-on-court by her teammates and the league for her defensive efforts.
The club’s second side has been having a harder time, with just a single win for the season. It’s the first time the club has fielded more than one senior side. Devlin said the seconds lacked depth, but that would come as the side developed. “We’ve only had one team for 30 years,” he said. “We want to build a second side and return to [being] one of the real powerhouses.” He said the club had 18 players in each of the two senior squads, but was still looking for more players, with each squad able to have 23. The Warriors’ under-18B and under-16B teams had wins at the weekend while the under-14A side lost.
Big V
Melton Thoroughbreds remain without a win in Big V men’s division 1. It was a tough night against Melbourne University Black Angels, with the Angels leading by 13 points at half-time. It was an even last quarter, but the damage had been done and the Angels won 91-67. Ivan Harris top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 23.

Caroline Springs has sacked premiership-winning coach Scott Korczynski five weeks into the Western Region Football League season. Korczynski coached last year’s division 2 premiership, but it’s been a hard slog in division 1 and the Lakers are yet to win a game. Caroline Springs president Dean Ellis said “communication problems” were behind the sacking. Football manager Marc Raak will coach the side for the rest of the season. Melton Phoenix picked up its first point of the FFV state league 4 west on Saturday with a nil-all draw against Western Eagles. Phoenix remain on the bottom of the ladder. In state league 5 west, Spring Hills had a 2-1 win against Maidstone United. Josip Loncaric and Rocky Calfapietra were the goalscorers for Spring Hills. Spring Hills sit third on the ladder, three points off top spot.
TAC Cup
Western Jets’ fell just short of a win against Greater Western Victoria Rebels on Sunday in the TAC Cup. Two late goals weren’t enough for the Jets, which lost 11.5 (71)-9.9 (63). Co-captain Nicholas Stuhldreier was the Jets’ best. Amy Carroll on her way winning the RDNL best-on-court medal. (Shawn Smits)
Stewart said it had been good to participate in the match with a team that just wanted to go out there and play netball.
In the under-17s, RDNL was beaten 39-29. Sunbury Lions’ Keara Fitzgerald was best on court for the RDNL.

Ballarat League triumphs in the dying minutes Ballarat Football League finished on top against arch rival Bendigo Football League in a thrilling AFL Victoria WorkSafe Country Championships game. Both sides put on a show and the final result wasn’t sealed until the final minutes. Ballarat conceded the lead early in the last quarter, when Bendigo kicked three quick goals. but fought back with four of the last five goals sealing a 16.9 (105)-14.10 (94) victory and bragging rights. Ballarat was in front for much of the game, but coach Shaun O’Loughlin said it was never comfortable. “It was a great game and [a] really exciting game for those watching,” he said.
“We kept a three-goal buffer for much of the match, but couldn’t break it open. “When they hit the front in the last quarter, we had to fight back to get back in front. “We got a couple of late goals to get back in front. We stood up well in some big contests and finished really well. “We happened to be the side in front at the end.” Darley’s Brian Graham was awarded the best on ground medal for Ballarat. Bacchus Marsh’s Scott Sherlock was dangerous, as was Nathan Horbury and Christopher Giampaolo. Nathan Pring kicked four goals for Ballarat, in what O’Loughlin said was an even team performance.
For Bendigo, Matt Thornton kicked four goals and Andrew Collins was named best on ground. The win means Ballarat will move up from ninth to eighth in state rankings. Bendigo slips to 11th. It’s O’Loughlin’s first win as interleague coach, he was in charge last season when the league lost a thriller to the Western Region Football League. “It was a bit disappointing last year,” he said. “We put in a really good effort, but couldn’t get the win. “It’s good for the league to showcase itself on a bigger stage. The BFL is becoming stronger and it’s such an even competition.”
He said the decision to name a final squad early on, instead of a big initial squad, would be something they would consider continuing. “We found last year we spent the first few training sessions looking at which players we were going to cut. “We decided it would be better to have some really good quality training sessions right from the start. The players really appreciated knowing that they were in the team from the start. It might be a good recipe going forward.” It was the only win of the day for Ballarat, Bendigo won the under-18 football, under-17 netball and senior netball. Tara Murray
RDFL teamwork a winner By Tara Murray Riddell District Football League stepped it up after quarter-time to knock off West Gippsland Football League in the AFL Victoria WorkSafe Country Championships on Saturday. After an even first quarter at Macedon, the RDFL moved the ball more cleanly and it showed on the scoreboard. A 15-point half-time lead was extended in the third and fourth quarters, with the RDFL eventually winning 18.15 (123)-11.5 (71). West Gippsland Football League is still in the early stages of its inaugural season so were an unknown quantity going into the match. West Gippsland was ranked 25th in Victoria and the RDFL 26th. RDFL coach Arron Bray said securing information about its opponents had been tricky, so the league’s focus had been on perfecting its own game. Bray said once the RDFL players settled, they were able to take control. “Everyone was hungry to get their hands on the ball,” he said. “We had two or three blokes going after the same ball. They were sitting on the outside and getting the ball out. “We had to back our blokes to win the football and have some guys on the outside. “The smalls were really good below their knees.” Co-captain Jon Kent kicked six goals and Phil Lobb chipped in with five, but it was the work of another forward, Rex Hickman, that won most praise from the coach. “Rex made life easier for the other forwards,” he said. “He ran their centre half-back to places all around the ground he didn’t want to be. “There was good space behind him for the other forwards.” Woodend-Hesket’s Daniel Toman received the RDFL’s best-on-ground medal. Kent and fellow co-captain Brett Chambers were also named among the best. “Dan hunts the ball well and can hit targets,” Bray said. He said the strength of the side was the way the players had gelled leading up to, and during, the match. “We had nine or 10 go through the midfield at certain stages,” he said. “It was a real team effort. “From the first training session we made sure it wasn’t all the players from Wallan together and all the players from Rupertswood together and so on. “It showed, with everyone gelling as a team.” The win means the RDFL will move up the rankings from 26th. In a clean sweep for the RDFL, its under-18s also defeated West Gippsland. Diggers Rest’s Corey Wright was awarded the best-on-ground medal, with Rupertswood’s Dylan Featon kicking five goals.

It has been a good start to the season for Melissa Lake and the Caroline Springs women’s sides. (Robert Lake)
Pennant side sticks to winning form It was a mixed weekend for Caroline Springs’ senior hockey sides in Hockey Victoria’s winter competition at the weekend. The pennant F grade side remains undefeated after four rounds with an 8-0 win against Melbourne University. Brittany Webster was the star for Caroline Springs scoring six goals. Webster leads the divisions goalscoring. Fiona Branford and Aimee Jungfer scored the other goals. Caroline Springs has now scored 19 goals in its first three games and sit on top of the ladder. They’ve also had a bye. In women’s metro B-west, Caroline Springs tied 1-1 with Sunshine. Jessica Spence, who leads the division’s goalscoring, was the goalscorer for Caroline Springs. Despite the draw, it remains on top of the ladder. The side won all of its three previous games, scoring 19 goals along the way. The men’s side suffered a 6-0 loss to Maccabi in men’s pennant G grade. It’s been a bit tougher start to the season for the men’s side compared to the two women. The men’s side sits eighth with one win from its opening four matches. In the juniors, the under-10 Springers (blue) drew 2-2 with Footscray Wolfpack. The other under-10 team, Springers (black) defeated Footscray Hawks 3-2. Tara Murray
Smart electrics cut costs and keep the service local Electric cars are well and truly on the modern motoring agenda. There are 70 electric-only models available worldwide – two in Australia being the BMW i3 and the Tesla Model S – and Renault may launch an economical model here later this year. But if you own an electric car, its servicing recommendations may be inadvertently making you spend more than you need. Daryl Budgeon is the Victorian branch secretary of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA), which is one of the longest-running electric motor car associations in the world (established in the early 70s). “A lot of the manufacturers’ workshops tend to over-service the vehicles,” Daryl says. “You don’t have an internal combustion engine, so you don’t need oil changes or oil filters, fuel filters or coolant. “Workshops need to do the running gear, brakes, tyres, air-con – and they have to do checks on the batteries. “But with an internal combustion engine, there are more than 100 moving parts, depending on the motor. “An electric motor, by contrast, has only one – a bearing at each end of the motor,” he says. “There is very little mechanically that can go wrong with them, so it is
worthwhile for owners of electric cars to use a local workshop to get their general servicing done – for cost-saving and practical purposes.” Electric cars should be cheaper to service, cheaper to run and have far less that can go wrong, Daryl says. Electric cars have been around for as long as combustion-engine petrol powered vehicles, in fact. Henry Ford’s wife famously preferred the Detroit Electric over the combustion-style car her husband manufactured. Did you know that even the first Porsche to come off the production line was an electric-powered vehicle? Daryl explains the race to see which technology would win out in the late 1800s – combustion or electric – was a close call. “What really turned the tide in the end, apart from cheap oil in the United States where they really adopted combustion technology, was the electric starter motor. “They went from wind-up engines to that … when [the electric starter motor] was applied to the internal combustion engine technology, unfortunately, the electric motor car lost out.”
There is very little mechanically “that can go wrong with them, so it is

olkswagen’s Golf GTI has earned more than a few plaudits across its four decades of history, crafting a reputation as the hot hatch by which others are measured. The brand’s seventh-generation GTI arrived in 2013, bringing a significant increase in performance, as well as a lighter, stronger platform and more polished interior. This year’s model was always going to be impressive. The new car builds on a solid foundation with more power, sharper styling and an updated interior that offers technology rarely seen in cars priced under $100,000.It’s also a more focused-looking car that adds an extra dollop of aggression to a model that already offers significant aesthetic appeal. The emotional pull continues on the inside, where classic GTI touches in tartan seat trim and a golf ball-inspired gearknob meet modern additions such as an Audi-sourced dash that offers customisable views including beautifully rendered maps, in-depth trip computer info and a lap timer for track day junkies. We can’t say the same about the central infotainment screen, with its annoying lack of a volume knob and hit-and-miss gesture control. While you could accuse the regular Golf ’s cabin of being a little too demure, the GTI’s red-stitched flat-bottomed steering wheel, pin-stripe ambient lighting and well-bolstered seats make the hatch feel genuinely special in a way none of its c$40,000 rivals can match. It feels appropriately brisk on the road, effortlessly overtaking and powering out of bends with most of the gusto you’d expect from a modern performance car. While not the quickest car in its class,

the GTI is more liveable than most of its rivals, thanks to electronically adjustable suspension with normal, sport and comfort mode, as well as a ride and handling balance that prioritises comfort and stability over ultimate body control and track-day nous. Still, it’s not as thorough an update as it
could have been - we’ve experienced better GTIs in the Performance and 40 Years, but Volkswagen has chosen not to inject that level of dynamic focus into its standard GTI. Updated styling, extra power and improved tech will no doubt bring repeat customers and help attract new ones, but it feels like the
brand is resting on its reputation. While the Golf GTI remains a well-rounded and impressively capable car, I can’t help but feel that the world’s largest car maker missed an opportunity to raise the bar. David McCowen
