Walking the walk MIKAYLA (FRONT), JACOB, SAFAL, JANA AND YONG

Hundreds of Taylors Hill youngsters braved cold and wet weather last Friday to walk to school. More than 400 Taylors Hill Primary School pupils took part in the national Walk to School Day. School physical education teacher Leonie Gasper said the aim was to give children a lifelong love of physical activity. “There are always your active students coming along, but through events like this … it encourages those less active students to also get involved,” she said. “Days like these are very important.” The national event, spearheaded by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, fosters a reduction in dependency on cars, helping children develop road-crossing skills and the health benefits of walking. West rides property boom By Sumeyya Ilanbey Taylors Hill and Caroline Springs house prices jumped by a staggering 30 to 40 per cent in the past five years. The median house price sits at $561,000 in Caroline Springs and at $625,000 in Taylors Hill, according to Domain data. Melbourne’s outer west is expected to experience mammoth growth as the state government moves to abolish stamp duty for first home buyers purchasing properties for less than $600,000 from July 1. Domain Group chief economist Andrew Wilson said the scrapping of the stamp duty

would mean first home buyers would be able to borrow more money from banks, and that would likely drive up house prices. “The middle and bottom of the property market has been really strong over the last 12 to 18 months,” he said. “That part of the market has boomed all the way throughout Melbourne’s north and west because of its affordability … compared with the eastern suburbs.” Despite banks tightening rules around investor lending, Dr Wilson said there was still a “strong appetite” for investors to buy into the Melton market, where rental yields are high.

Dr Wilson’s comments follow Real Estate Institute of Victoria data that has revealed strong growth in the Taylors Hill and Melton property market, with median house prices increasing by 16 and 15.8 per cent, respectively. REIV president Joseph Walton said that while City of Melton was home to some of Melbourne’s most affordable suburbs, the area was “well positioned” for future growth as the inner-west continued to “gentrify”. “The city’s outer west will continue to benefit from improved road and rail infrastructure, with Melton South experiencing solid price growth following the completing of its train

station,” Mr Walton said. “Home to some of the city’s most affordable suburbs, the City of Melton continues to offer first home buyers the ideal opportunity to get a foothold on the property ladder for less than half the citywide median.” Caroline Springs Barry Plant manager David Lussi said Melton’s eastern corridor was well serviced with arterial roads and the addition of a new train station. He said improvements to other major roads, including Westwood Drive, work on which has been allocated funding in this year’s Melton council budget, would continue to drive up property prices in the area.

Home invasions prompt Coalition task force A Burnside Heights family has left its home after a terrifying invasion last year. Speaking about their ordeal, Richa Walia said the family lived in fear. She said they had been unable to sleep since the incident and had decided to move house for a fresh start. “We felt so vulnerable,” Ms Waila said. “We had no power over these powerful people. And the fact that help doesn’t arrive straight away when you need it is the scariest part.” Ms Walia and her family were asleep when four men, armed with metal poles and

baseball bats, broke into their house and threatened them while demanding they hand over the keys to their car. Ms Walia said the family waited 35 minutes for police to attend the scene.

She and her family met with Opposition Leader Matthew Guy last week to speak about the Coalition’s plans for a Victims Support Rapid Response Service if elected. The service, which will be operated by the justice department, will co-ordinate on-call volunteer counsellors, multi-faith chaplains and psychologists to provide immediate help to victims. Volunteers will receive an SMS, or app, alert notifying them of an incident that has occurred in the area and be called out to provide support to victims.

Station funds ‘not enough’ Funding has been allocated to plan for a Toolern railway station, but Melton council says it’s disappointed the state government hasn’t committed to fully funding the project. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz earlier this month announced that $7 million from the Growth Areas Infrastructure Charge would be used on future-proofing the proposed site as part of Ballarat line upgrades. This means the Toolern station, which is expected to cost $35 million, will be able to be built in the future. Melton council engineering services manager Charles Cornish said that while the funding was welcome, it didn’t go far enough. “It would have been a much better outcome if the government was to fund the complete construction of Toolern station and deliver this as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade project, minimising project cost and disruption to this important commuter rail corridor,” Mr Cornish said. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, a recent Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning report revealed that of the $43 million Melton was eligible for in GAIC funding, the state government had allocated only $6.5 million for projects in the municipality. The GAIC is a tax on newly developed land in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. Ms Kairouz said the $7 million announcement was a “major” boost to everyone who lived and worked in the area. “I’m proud to be part of a government that has a forward-thinking plan for our city,” she said. Ten ducks, riddled with shotgun pellets, were found stuffed in plastic bags and dumped near train tracks at Melton in what is being described as a “vile” act of animal cruelty. The adult Pacific black ducks were likely lured to their deaths. Photos of the ducks, seen by Star Weekly, show undigested bird seed in their crop. Coalition Against Duck Shooting campaign director Laurie Levy said shooters have over the years “bragged” about befriending ducks and feeding them before shooting them during the duck hunting season. But he said it’s the first time the group has evidence that ducks were likely coaxed with food before being killed. “I think that’s the most cowardly act they can undertake,” Mr Levy said. “Those birds didn’t stand a chance – to lure birds in … where they think they’re dealing with human friends, and then to pull out a shotgun … I think, is one of the lowest acts I’ve seen in 31 years.” Melton resident Nathan Miles said the ducks were found by railway workers last Tuesday. He’s called on authorities to “fully investigate” the incident and prosecute the offenders. “It’s disgusting, vile and cruel. It appears someone has fed these native water birds, gained their trust and then massacred and dumped their bodies,” Mr Miles said. Star Weekly understands the Game Management Authority and RSPCA are both investigating the shooting. Tom Whitty, a spokesman for state agriculture minister Jaala Pulford, said authorities were out in full force during the duck hunting season (which ends June 12) to ensure people complied with hunting regulations and laws. “We respect the fact that many people have deeply held and divergent views about duck hunting,” Mr Whitty said. “However, the government recognises that hunting is a legitimate recreational activity. “Hunting must remain safe, responsible, and sustainable. That’s why extensive surveys of

“I want to take the pressure off our first responders and provide a greater, quicker level of support to people who have been impacted,” Mr Guy said. “So many families are sick to death of the excuses of this government as to why they can’t get tough on crime … “Which is why I’ve got a greater focus on victims, not on the criminals, and that’s the fundamental reform that is needed in Victoria today.”

Chevy ‘ice’ appeal tossed out By Ewen McRae A Hillside man who was convicted of importing more than 23 kilograms of methamphetamine in a Chevrolet Impala has had his appeal against the conviction rejected in the Supreme Court. Besim Beqiri was sentenced in 2016 to 15 years jail for attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug. In May, 2014, Beqiri arranged for the importation of a Chevrolet Impala from California to his Hillside home. But when the car arrived at Port Melbourne in September,

customs officers found a number of packages containing methamphetamine concealed in its rear panels. Police removed the drugs and replaced them with fakes, as well as a listening device. In the following days, phone calls between Beqiri and his associates were intercepted and, following surveillance, Beqiri was arrested on September 25, 2014. Last year Beqiri pleaded not guilty to the charges, saying he had been duped after buying the vehicle in good faith. He was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to 15 years jail. Two associates were sentenced to 11 years

jail and 16 years jail, respectively for the same crime. Last week, Beqiri and one of his associates challenged the jury empanelment procedure from their 2016 trial, saying they were “not allowed nor afforded a proper or adequate opportunity to make an assessment of the potential jurors”. They also claimed the length of their sentences were manifestly excessive. In jury empanelment, each juror must face the accused in the dock for a period up to five seconds before making their way to the jury box. Lawyers for Beqiri and his associate

claimed the jurors stood for less than four seconds “because of unease, awkwardness and humiliation”. Beqiri claimed he felt anxiety and panic because the jurors did not stand facing the dock for a full five seconds as directed. But judges Mark Weinberg, Robert Osborn and Simon Whelan dismissed the appeals. “There is no satisfactory basis for concluding that the jury acted other than impartially in the present case,” they said. They also said that Beqiri’s sentence was not excessive when considering the key role he played in the crime as well as his not guilty plea.

Look back to the future For this year’s Reconciliation Week (from May 27 to June 3) celebrations, Kirrip House, in collaboration with Hope Street Youth and Family Services, will host a community day this Friday. There will be a smoking, welcome to country and flag-raising ceremony at Hope Street, 215 Coburns Road, Melton, from 9.30-11am, followed by a barbecue at Kirrip House, 26 Exford Road, Melton South. “Our event is to try and bridge a gap,” Mr Webster said. “To build a solid, and community-based, foundation. If we don’t all come together, the community misses out on a whole lot of stuff.” Melton council will host a range of Reconciliation Week activities, including an art exhibition. Peter Webster’s outlook on life is, seemingly, simple – acknowledge the past in order to move forward. But the Kamilaroi man (from central New South Wales) knows the real world isn’t that black-and-white. “We’re trying to build a trust … and come together for a common goal,” Mr Webster said. “There’s so much negativity and so much segregation – not just with the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community, but the community in general. “Australia is a country of many nations and we should value everyone. We need to recognise Australia and Australia’s past and move forward with that.” For the past few years, Mr Webster has been running the Melton South-based Kirrip Aboriginal House and he has big plans for its future.

Melton and Moorabool residents are doing their part to help the environment and the economy, donating more than 15,000 printer cartridges to be recycled and reused. It’s been a historic year for the Cartridges 4 Planet Ark campaign, where a record 3.5 million cartridges were recycled across the country last year. The program aims to divert the 34 million cartridges from landfill, where they can take up to 1000 years to break down. In Melton, Officeworks and two Australia Post offices joined the campaign, raking in 13,067 cartridges. Planet Ark recycling programs manager Ryan Collins said aluminum, steel and up to

six different types of plastic can be retrieved from used printer cartridges. The recycled material can, in turn, be used to make a range of products, including pens, rulers, garden beds and TonerPave – a road sealant. More than 900 kilometres of roads across the country have been paved with the sealant. “It doesn’t make good business sense to send useful and valuable materials to landfill when they can be salvaged and directed back into the economy,” Mr Collins said. “We’re particularly proud of the fact that the program has consistently achieved zero waste to landfill every year.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Two Melton men have faced court charged with offences allegedly committed during a three-day crime spree that included last Tuesday’s daylight invasion of a home in Hillside. Matthew Mesley, 26, and Joshua Wood, 18, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, with Wood appearing to sport a black eye. They have been charged with offences including unlawful assault, intentionally causing serious injury, arson and unlawful imprisonment. Wood was ordered to meet a prison nurse as soon as possible regarding a drug condition. The court was told the violent attack at the Hillside property was the culmination of a crime spree that began on May 11 in Melton West and continued in Hillside on May 15 and May 16. More than $80,000 of items were stolen, including a rifle, a shotgun, electronic devices, fishing equipment, power tools, jewellery and the vehicle. Police have also charged Wood and Mesley with resisting and assaulting police officers. Magistrate Donna Bakos remanded the pair to face a committal hearing on August 10. No bail application was made.

F E A T U R E

Making memories that count Whether you’re nana or pop, nonna or nonno, yaya or pappous, ba or ong, when you have long-distance grandchildren, you want to keep the relationship close and strong despite infrequent personal contact. Author Sharon Lovejoy tells in her book, Toad Cottages and Shooting Stars, how the simplest conversations, letters and traditions can keep the intimate bond with grandchildren flourishing across the miles. Here are just three of her suggestions that are creative and fun memory-makers, and fab ways to pile on the mortar of love to the brick wall of distance: 1 Celebrate an un-birthday Long-distance grandparents can’t always make it to their grandchild’s birthday, but the missing out – on both sides – can be solved by creating a new tradition: choose a day in the year you know suits you both to get together and declare it Unbirthday Day. Two birthdays a year is exciting for any child. Make it all about him/her, with birthday banners, a fancy cake or trip to the zoo (or whatever their interest). And, of course, a gift. 2. Letters and pictures Post them a large envelope, addressed to your grandchild’s name, and enclose a bundle of smaller unsealed envelopes with an A4 sheet of paper inside each, stamped and addressed to you. Ask their parents to encourage them to write or draw something every few weeks, then let them post them. A steady stream of letters and pictures not only keep you in their hearts and minds, but end up being a keepsake chronicle of their lives for you to share and laugh over as they reach adulthood. 3. Commemorate their visit After a visit with them at your place, use your talents to make a keepsake and reminder of what fun they had. Make a collage of photos, tickets from a show, a sketch depicting a discovery or funny moment you shared, a message of good luck for an upcoming challenge – anything, really. Glue them to brightly coloured A4 poster paper, then get it laminated and post it to them. And, hey, don’t worry about these ideas being considered old-fashioned. In an increasingly digitalised age, the importance of the personal, the thoughtful and the touchable can be kept alive across the generations. And grandkids will love it. Carole Levy

This is the perfect house for a family with kids who need space to play. A study and carpeted lounge flank the wide tiled entry of this immaculate family residence in Westlake estate. Walk through to the carpeted family room which opens to the well-optioned, fully tiled kitchen-dining area. Here Miele cooking appliances, granite benchtops, dishwasher and ample storage define the space. Three good-sized bedrooms all receive lots of natural light, but the real asset of this great property is the low-maintenance outdoor area. There’s an in-ground trampoline, easy-to-manage spaces and two garden sheds. This well thought-out property has security cameras, video intercom, high ceilings, ducted heating, evaporative cooling, ducted vacuum and a double remote-controlled garage.

Timber steps lead to a welcoming front porch, adding to the extremely presentable kerb appeal. First impressions are equalled by next-level interiors and stunning outdoor spaces. Enter to timber floorboards and feature skirting boards, a well-proportioned floorplan with main bedroom (en suite plus walk-in robe with compartmentalised storage) to the left. A separate lounge room is opposite. Two further fitted bedrooms follow with a simple, contemporary central bathroom. The kitchen has stone benchtops, a blue glass splashback, ample storage and stainless-steel appliances overlooking the meals area and rumpus/family room. The wrap-around fully finished outdoor room has downlit plaster ceilings, fans, sunscreens and decking overlooking a landscaped backyard. Extras are ducted heating, split-system, alarm system and ducted vacuum.

Audrey Hepburn famously said: “to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” and the garden of 95 Barries Road has been so lovingly tended to that this house feels like it’s brimming with the promise of another day. Situated in the heart of Melton, this neat and tidy property is a short walk to Woodgrove Shopping Centre, High Street and public transport. The charming house comprises three fitted bedrooms, main with with en suite. An L-shaped, carpeted living area wraps around a central kitchen, overlooking a tiled meals area. There is a comfortable outdoor entertaining area overlooking the well-tendered garden. It’s set on about 587 square metres with a double carport and concreted drive. Extras are ducted heating, evaporated cooling and there is a garden shed, of course!

As a great opportunity for those wanting to enter the property market or looking for a new investment property, this house has room for new owners to add their own personal touches. Set on about 580 square metres, it’s in a good location near schools, shops and public transport. There are three bedrooms all with built-in wardrobes. The hub of the house is the open kitchen, with warm timber tones, and family-meals zone. The large backyard awaits a creative mind to transform it but as is it provides plenty of lawn for the kids to play on, a shed for storage and still space to do so much more. The front yard also has a large lawned area. The house has a gas wall furnace and evaporative cooling and there is a tandem carport.

BACCHUS MARSH 110 Clifton Drive, 3340 Sweeney Bacchus Marsh: 5367 8388

Price: $560,000

In a relatively new area of town, within a few minutes’ drive of Main Street shops and services and just around the corner from Western Freeway access, this sparkling modern abode has much to offer a family. It has today’s popular colour palette of soft-grey and neutrals, juxtaposed with the classic combo of black and white in kitchen and bathrooms. Floor coverings of honey-toned floorboards, grey carpet and roman blinds are harmonious elements.

Private sale

Entry is to a generous foyer, to the left of which is a carpeted open lounge room. Ahead is the expansive, light-filled living hub where the kitchen puts on a fine display with hints of French provincial. It has an island bench, walk-in pantry, an abundance of storage with stylish door handles, white splashback tiles and the full suite of stainless-steel appliances. The three fitted bedrooms, as well as an open study, are along a second hallway, as

are the laundry, separate toilet and smart main bathroom. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with dual basins set in a vanity with lots of storage and a large shower. Ducted heating and evaporative cooling keep things comfy year-round. An elevated, covered deck with ceiling fan has steps down to expansive grey-coloured concrete, beyond which are lawn and pebbled areas.

An always-handy garden shed is tucked into a corner. The beautifully presented property also has a remote-controlled double garage with internal access to the entry hall. For Anthony Braunthal, it was an opportunity too good to pass up. The business developer had just sold his most successful start-up, a tech business with more than 250 staff and contractors. “My wife actually demanded I take time off when I sold that start-up, but after a month I was already bored,” Anthony says. “I love the excitement of building businesses and am a chartered accountant by trade, so really enjoy working with the figures to build profitable enterprises.” Enter Resi Ventures, started in 2010 and owned by Anthony and business partner Khurram Saeed. Resi Ventures is based on land development – specifically, finding farms not yet earmarked for residential development and then structuring Land Development Agreements (LDAs) around them. Anthony, who had successfully built and sold many businesses, had previously mentored Khurram while he was doing a degree in entrepreneurialship. Resi Ventures ultimately diverged into medium-density developments, but the business is once more focusing on land redevelopment itself, as this has always been its core business. Anthony explains that Resi Ventures has capital for development. Farm owners can structure an agreement to suit their immediate needs while creating a future nest egg, with a percentage of each block waiting for them when development is complete. He says that is usually 25 per cent of total block revenue. “Land owners come in many shapes and sizes,” he says. “We have traditional farm owners with working farms who are reaching retirement age, hobby farmers – one was a trucking operator who bought

NEW HOMES AND LAND – Resi Ventures

land out of Melbourne to house some trucks.” Anthony says Resi Ventures wants the land owners, if interested, to understand the process. “Every LDA is unique and is the result of a mutual agreement between us and the land owners,” he says. “It is built based on what the land owners want out of their agreement. Anything is fair game. It is about creating an agreement that works for both parties.

“The [project] turnaround is usually four or five years, as many of these allotments do not yet have Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) ‘urban growth’ approval. “During that time, a land owner may ask to have their rates and outgoings paid or to keep their principal home and a few of the blocks for grandchildren. “A monthly stipend or annual lump sum have also been requested. It really does depend. “With those latter types of agreements,

the cost is taken off the end return, but it works for many families. It is just an option out there. “We once had a farming family client. Their neighbour sold at current market value for $7.5 million. Our client signed a LDA with us and by completion they made over $20 million.” For details, call Khurram Saeed 0421 999 947 or Anthony Braunthal 0416 069 959; or visit www.resiventures.com.au/LDA

SPORT Bullish Rockbank adds another team to the roster The resurgence at Rockbank continues with the club to field a third open age football side. The Riddell District Football League side announced last week it had enough players to enter a team into the inaugural AFL Goldfields Club 18 competition. The Rams are the fifth team in the 16-a-side competition, with their first game on June 3 against the Sunbury Kangaroos. The other sides are Diggers Rest, Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury Lions. Rams’ football operations manager Gavin Sporle said it was massive for the club to field a third open age side and shows how far the club has come in the past 12 months. At the start of the last season the Rams

struggled to have enough numbers to field a reserves side and it’s senior side wasn’t competitive. “It is significant for the club,” Sporle said, “We are very excited by the amount of growth of the club at senior level. “We’ve got a surplus of players not playing every week and we want to give them an opportunity to play football with us and not having them look elsewhere to play.” The club has appointed former player Luke Maumill as coach. “We’re looking for any players who have been tossing up about playing football, but because of work or other commitments can’t commit to training,” Sporle said.

“While they may not be able to train, this gives them the opportunity to play football every week.” AFL Goldfields regional general manager Rod Ward is excited by the announcement from the club on the back of low numbers in recent seasons. “This is great news for the club,” Ward said. “This is a reflection of the hard work done by some outstanding volunteers at the club, and shows how far the club has come in a short period of time.” In RDFL results at the weekend, it was a tough day out for the Rams against Diggers Rest in the seniors. The Burras, coming off a rare loss, showed

Melton right at home By Tara Murray The Melton Thoroughbreds mens side finally put it all together for their first win of the Big V division 1 season on Saturday night. After a tough start to the season there have been signs that things were on the improve for the Thoroughbreds in the past few weeks. On Saturday night they had reason to smile when they defeated Warrnambool Seahawks. The Thoroughbreds started the better of the two sides and led by 10 points at the first change. The Seahawks, missing a couple of players, continued to push the Thoroughbreds through the next two quarters and there were just four points the difference at the final change. Thoroughbreds sealed the deal with a 77-66 victory. For coach John Allison and his players, the win was a long time coming. “Everybody played well,” Allison said. “We couldn’t break away “We got crucial stops at crucial times … the things we wanted to do, we are starting to do better on the court. What we are practising is working.” One of the crucial elements for the Thoroughbreds was the spread of scoring across the board. Billy Feben “got hot” and top-scored with 22 points. Ivan Harris, Jason Todorov and Jordan Kirk scored double figures, while the combination of centres Shane Moroney and Mitchell Barnes provided solid numbers. The game was the Thoroughbreds’ first for the season at their Melton home court. They’ve been playing home games at Caroline Springs while their court was repaired. Allison said returning to their court had been a massive plus. “It was absolutely huge,” he said. “The boys were really excited to be back. We think it’s one of the better courts around and the boys love playing on it. The atmosphere was really good.” It was a special night for the club on another level – it celebrated Jordan Kirk’s 200th game. While he had already played the milestone game, the club wanted to celebrate the occasion in front of a home crowd. The next challenge for the Thoroughbreds is to get a second win and Allison is confident it won’t be too far away. “I think we just needed to get the first game out of the way,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ve got momentum now. The boys were excited after the game. We’re looking forward to next week.” The Thoroughbreds’ youth league side split its weekend double, defeating the Seahawks on Saturday night before losing to Maccabi Warriors on Sunday. Broden Collins top-scored for the Thoroughbreds on Saturday, scoring 20 points. Feben backed up his performance from the senior game with 25 points in the youth league’s sides loss on Sunday.

why they were last year’s premiers, winning 25.19 (169)-7.7 (49). Matthew Krul and Jamie Lobb kicked four goals each for the Burras, as 14 players hit the scoreboard. It was all single goalkickers for the Rams, with Harley Cameron named their best. And for the first time this season, Melton Centrals were completely outplayed, losing to Sunbury Kangaroos 17.16 (118)-7.5 (47). Players interested in joining Rockbank can attend training on Tuesday or Thursday nights, or call 0481 912 604 or footballoperations@ rockbankfsc.com.au Tara Murray

Early start sets Panthers apart A first quarter blitz against Bacchus Marsh set up Melton South’s second win of the Ballarat Netball League season. The Panthers led 19-8 at quarter-time and extended the lead to 15 goals at the main break and 48-33 at the last change. The Cobras showed some fight in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough, with the Panthers winning 62-50. Panthers goal shooter Bec Colwell shot a remarkable 50 goals from 52 attempts. Her shooting partner Alexis Climas was best on court. For the Cobras, Susan Watson and Madeline Hodgson shot 24 goals a piece. The Panthers would be liking their chances of another win next week when they play the lower-placed Darley. In other games, Melton remains winless after a 42-33 loss to Lake Wendouree. Ebony Carter was best for the Bloods. Darley’s tough season continued with a 45-27 loss to Sebastopol. Midcourter Amy Giaini was named the Devils’ best. Tara Murray

Diggers hit their stride

Jordan Kirk’s 200th game celebrations were topped off with a win. (Shawn Smits)

Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list in Riddell District Netball League. After falling short against one of the competition pacesetters the week before the interleague bye, the Burras were keen to redeem themselves against Rockbank. Both sides struggled early, with only 10 goals scored in the first quarter. The Burras found momentum after the first quarter, opening up a 10-goal lead at half-time. They continue to dominate, outscoring the Rams 32-8 in the second half. Shelby Strong scored 25 goals for the Burras, while playing coach Amy Carroll scored 22 goals in three quarters. The Burras sit fourth on the ladder, equal with third-placed Lancefield. Melton Centrals had a good win against Sunbury Kangaroos. The Centrals won every quarter for a final score of 66-29. Rita White-Kay scored 35 goals from 45 attempts, while Rebecca Morabito scored 29 goals. Centre Jade Fisher was best on court. The win keeps the Centrals in touch with the top sides. 39 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 23, 2017

Woodroffe marks 400 games to be Rockbank royalty Saxon Woodroffe has never considered playing football anywhere else but Rockbank. There’s been a few highs and even more lows, but he’s always stayed loyal to the club where he began his football career as a 10-year-old. “Over the years there has been some success, but a lot of hard times,” Woodroffe said. “For me it was never really ever an option to go elsewhere, even when I moved away from the area. I’m a pretty loyal bloke and I stuck with the club.” On Saturday he’s set to step out on the field for his 400th game at the club, including juniors and seniors. He’s the first player to play 400 games for the club. Woodroffe said he knew the milestone game was approaching, but admitted to not knowing in which round. He said he kept playing each

year for a few different reasons, but mostly friendship. “I love footy and have always been pretty fit and healthy. It’s a good way to keep going in the winter months. “A lot of mates come through footy and I try to catch up with them when they come to past players days “The team aspect is great.” After a couple of lean years, which included 18 months without a win, Woodroffe is hoping the club is coming out the other side. He said the round two win against Lancefield, the team’s first win since the middle of 2015, had been a special day. And while he’s only played in a couple of finals series in his career he hopes there will be a few more to come. “I last played finals three to four years ago,

hopefully with the players coming through the ranks we can get back there. “The young blokes are developing and are taking the next step and we’ve got a couple of recruits with a bit more experience.” The majority of the current playing group has gone through the under-18s, which Woodroffe has coached for the past three years. And the 35-year-old has no plans to slow down. “I’m still training and keeping up with the younger blokes,” he said. “I don’t see me retiring anytime soon.” Tara Murray Saxon Woodroffe will be the first Rockbank player to play 400 games. (Damian Visentini)

Panthers find positives By Tara Murray Melton South got a true indication of where it needs to get to if it is going to match it with the Ballarat Football League top sides. The Panthers won three of their four matches before the interleague bye and started their climb up the ladder. Looking to start the next phase of the season on a winning note, the Panthers faced a full-strength Bacchus Marsh side at the weekend. For most of the game nothing separated last year’s wooden spooners and premiers. It was only periods late in the third quarter and early in the fourth that proved the difference.

Caroline Springs women’s sides remain undefeated in Hockey Victoria’s winter competitions. In pennant F grade, Caroline Springs beat Old Xaverians. Laura Brown scored two goals, while Lucy Steele and Holly Azzopardi also found the back of the net. In women’s metro B west, Caroline Springs won 5-2 against Parkville. Jessica Spence scored two goals with Kathy Jungfer, Alexandra Grant-Taylor and Randeep Kaur scoring one each. In men’s pennant G grade, Caroline Springs lost 7-0 to St Bernards. It was a tough weekend for Melton Centrals and Bacchus Marsh in the AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League. In division 1, Centrals were held goal-less by Sunbury Kangaroos, who won 9.14 (68)-0.2 (2). In division 2, Bacchus Marsh lost to Carisbrook 10.9 (69)-4.3 (27).

It wasn’t a nine-goal game and they’ll say the - Sean Triplett same The Cobras kicked eight goals in a row to turn a seven-point margin into a match-winning lead. The teams traded goals late in the final quarter, but the Cobras won 20.13 (133)-11.11 (77). Panthers co-coach Sean Triplett said the end result wasn’t a true indication of the closeness of the match. “It wasn’t a nine-goal game and they’ll say the same,” he said. “At the 17th minute of the third quarter, we were seven points down. A couple of decisions went their way and they got on a run. “It was out to 25 points in a few minutes and we couldn’t score for six to seven minutes. In the end, they used the ball better than us.” Brendan Fevola kicked five goals for the Panthers, but it was the Cobras’ Jarrah Maksymow who was the game’s main goal scorer. He kicked seven goals. Nick Kommer continued his good form and was named the Panthers’ best. Triplett said that despite the loss, there was plenty of upside for the Panthers. They still had at least three players out of their best side missing, including Matt Notman and Tayte Pears. He said it was hoped they would all return next week. Triplett said fingers were crossed that Munir El Houli, Anthony Hibbert and Tom Derickx, who all suffered injuries on Saturday, would also be fit. The Panthers face Darley this week, with the Devils undefeated so far this season. It will be battle of the former Carlton teammates in the coaches box with Fevola going head-to-head with Heath Scotland. Triplett said that after losing the Cobras game, the Panthers needed to bounce back. “We wanted to be 3-1 after the first four games and we were,” he said. “We want to go 3-1 in this block before we have another bye. We wanted to win against both Darley and Bacchus Marsh. “We know we will keep getting better as the season goes on,”

Champion netballer already eyeing another tilt at title It was fourth time lucky for Melton’s Madelyn Gray at the National Netball Championships. After coming home empty-handed from three previous national campaigns, Gray was part of the winning Victorian under-19 team which competed in Canberra last month. After going through the round matches undefeated, Victoria went on to win the title, defeating Queensland 25-17 in the grand final. Gray had previously represented Victoria twice at under-15 level and once at under-17 level at the championships. “It was so good and I’d waited for a long time to get the win,” she said. “I didn’t expect to help win the title as I hadn’t won one before. We were lucky we had a really good side.” Gray, 18, was one of two goal attacks in the team, the other was her City West Falcons’ teammate Tahnysha Salanoa. Both players got even court time across the championships. As a bottom-age player, Gray didn’t expect

to make the side because she had missed out on being selected as a bottom-age player at under-17 level. She was thrilled to get the unexpected call-up this year. “You get selected to try out if you’ve played representative netball or a higher level. “There was 80 girls to start with. There was 25 selected for a training squad and we trained together for three weeks. “I was a bit unsure whether I’d be picked as there was some really good netballers.” Gray, who did gymnastics before starting netball about 10 years ago, already has her eyes set on being part of the under-19 Victorian team again next year. She’s hoping a strong performance there will lead to Australian selection. In the lead-up she we will continue to play for the Falcons under-19 team in the Victorian Netball League and St Albans in the Geelong Football Netball League.

She had previously played for Melton in the Ballarat Netball League but made the move to St Albans to be coached by former Australian player Nicole Richardson. Richardson is also one of the coaches at the Falcons. Long term, Gray’s goal is to play for the Melbourne Vixens in the Suncorp Super Netball competition. She’s already had the opportunity to train with the Vixens on two occasions. “We got to train with them before we went to Canberra [for the championships],” she said. “And about two months ago they asked if I wanted to train with them for a session as a girl was injured. “I said ‘of course’. It was really good and I think that I went really well.” Tara Murray Madelyn Gray continues to shine on the netball court. (Shawn Smits)

Lakers spring into action

Toni Lane won a gold and silver medals at the World Masters Games and Louise Webb won gold. (Shawn Smits)

Masters of their sport By Tara Murray Two Bacchus Marsh women are making their mark on the international weightlifting scene. Toni Lane and Louise Webb both came away with gold medals from the World Masters Games held in New Zealand last month. Lane won gold in the women’s 40-44 age group in the 63 kilogram division, while Webb took gold in the women’s 55-59 age group in the 75-90 kilogram division. Both women’s love of lifting weights came after they started doing CrossFit, a high-intensity fitness program incorporating elements from several sports and types of exercise, including weights. Lane opened a gym in Bacchus Marsh in 2013, which is when she took up CrossFit. “I was really enjoying it, but I quickly realised that I needed to get better at weightlifting to get better at CrossFit. “I got a specialist [weightlifting] coach and I loved it.”

Lane was travelling to Geelong for specialised weightlifting training. It was her coach who suggested she start competing. Lane said most people were surprised to hear that she competed in the sport. “They think larger people do weightlifting,” she said. “They don’t get how someone as small as me can lift heavy weights.” Lane qualified for the World Masters Games and received the shock of her life when she was selected in the Australian team for the games. She was one of six women and six men selected to represent the Australian Weightlifting Federation. “I wasn’t expecting that,” the mum of four said. “I was at weightlifting when I found out and I started crying.” The surprises kept coming – Lane didn’t think she was a chance of winning and admits to surprising herself with her results. The Australian women’s team finished second overall. Webb said she joined Lane’s gym to get a bit

a strength and lose some weight. Weightlifting was the last thing on her mind. “I had some success with doing CrossFit,” she said. “I decided I really enjoyed the strength side of things, including weightlifting. “I got a specialist coach and heard about the big masters competition.” Leading up to the competition she Heading into the games, Webb was focused on her own performance. “I looked at the results and thought I would have been competitive. “I never thought I was a chance.” Webb, who competed in the games as an individual, said it was only in the dying stages of the competition that she realised she was in with a shot of taking out the gold. Lane and Webb both have their sights set on October’s World Cup event in Brisbane. Webb is already thinking about defending her masters title in Barcelona next year. “I want to get better and show that older people can continue to improve,” she said.

Caroline Springs dominated against Roxburgh Park on Friday night claiming its second win of the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League season. The Lakers were never challenged, kicking the only four goals of the first half and could have been further in front had they kicked straight. They continued their form in the second half going on to win 10.15 (75)-1.0 (6). Anthea Stathakis kicked five goals, and Cassie Wilson was named best on ground in what was a special night for the club – the side wore pink jumpers for breast cancer awareness. Coach Terry Azzopardi said he had been blown away with how the side had gelled and performed in the early rounds. “The majority of players have never played football before,” he said. “From where they’ve come the last six to seven weeks to now, there’s been a consistent improvement. “We’re not making up the numbers. Our motto is ‘mistakes or opportunities’. “If you make a mistake take it as an opportunity to learn something.” The Lakers have been blown away by the number of women and girls wanting to play football this season. They have a squad of 32 for the women’s side and have had to turn away new players. Azzopardi said only about six of the senior players had previously played football. “We’ve had three or four girls come from Deer Park and one from VU Spurs. “There’s a couple of ex-netballers and basketballers who already have that hand-eye co-ordination. There’s also a lot of mums. There’s a great mix of players.” Among the newcomers to the sport are a few familiar names. Haylea Cooney, wife of former Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney, and Shannon Lake, wife of Hawthorn premiership player Brian Lake, are part of the team. Sophie Cachia, whose husband and father played VFL/AFL, and Abby Gilmore, former partner of Western Bulldogs player Jake Stringer, are also on board. Azzopardi said all four had been great for the playing group. “It has been great of the publicity for the club and women’s football as a whole We’ve had 1000 people at our home games.” Tara Murray 41 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 23, 2017
