Artist’s body of work

(Shawn Smits)

Self portraits of acclaimed Australian artist Damien Shen depicting his indigenous roots are the focus of his new exhibition of photographs and lithographs. The exhibition, On the Fabric Ngarrindjeri Body – Volume II, was launched at CS Gallery last week as part of NAIDOC celebrations and is on until July 23. Shen said he used a series of photographs with Richard Lyons to explore his Aboriginal identity as well as portray the “objectification of the culture”. Shen is a South Australian man of Ngarrindjeri and Chinese bloodlines. He said posing for the photographs was the first time that he had personally been painted up in the Ngarrindjeri way. Mayor Sophie Ramsey said she was overwhelmed with the quality of his work. “Damien Shen is a masterful artist, and it’s particularly fitting that we present an exhibition exploring and celebrating Aboriginal identity and culture during NAIDOC Week 2017,” Cr Ramsey said. Shen will be visiting CS Gallery and holding an artist talk about his works. Esther Lauaki

Solar knocked out cold By Esther Lauaki Home owners have been left out in the cold in the past fornight – and it’s not just the sub-zero temperatures giving them the chill. Dozens of houses have been left without hot water and out of pocket after a cold snap caused the explosion of solar hot water panels. Calls for help flooded the Bacchus Marsh Residents Facebook page last week with at least 10 posts for urgent plumbing requests. Tony Williams, from AS&R Williams in Bacchus Marsh, said he struggled to keep up with unprecedented demand for help as temperatures plummeted last Monday. “I went to eight call-outs on Monday, most of them the filter blew up and all but one, the

panels split inside,” Mr Williams said. “That was a pretty good frost last weekend, probably the worst one I’ve seen in awhile.” The extreme cold temperatures caused water in solar panels to freeze and expand, resulting in snapped and split panels and broken frost valves. Mr Williams said issues weren’t with the quality of the panels, but with the lack of frost protection. Bacchus Marsh home owners Michael and Stephanie Blawuciak are unsure whether they’ll continue using their solar panels after being forced to call a plumber to fix a leak. “I took a look and water was pouring from underneath,” Mr Blawuciak said. “We called the plumber out and he put a hose

joiner on to bypass our solar panel system and got our hot water going again. The plumber said he had been to about 15 call-outs before us.”

Myrniong plumber Gary Howe, of Gary A Howe Plumbing, said he has been on three jobs a week to fix split solar hot water panels recently and recommended that residents buy a frost belt. “If you are in a frost-prone area, you need a frost belt otherwise it [panels exploding] will continue to happen.” A spokeswoman from Reece Bacchus Marsh said the store was sold out of solar hot water panels before noon last Monday as residents tried to replace split panels. Since 2009, the state government has offered rebates of up to $1600 to households converting to solar hot water systems under the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target scheme.

Ravenhall prison a jobs provider By Esther Lauaki The new medium-security Ravenhall Correction Centre will create 700 new jobs when it becomes operational later this year, the state government says. Victoria’s newest prison, near the Metropolitan Remand Centre and Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, is nearing completion, with the creation of about 1400 construction jobs. Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney last week inspected the jail, which is being built at a

cost of $670 million and will have capacity for 1000 male inmates. “As well as keeping our community safe, this huge project is boosting our economy and creating thousands of jobs,” Ms Tierney said. “The Ravenhall Correctional Centre will focus on reducing re-offending, especially amongst Aboriginal prisoners, younger prisoners, and those with a mental illness.” Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey welcomed the centre’s arrival. “Council welcomes this news, which will help address the current imbalance between

the number of residents and the number of local jobs,” she said. Brimbank deputy mayor Georgina Papafotiou was also enthusiastic. “The Ravenhall Corrections Centre is an important project for Melbourne’s west and Brimbank,” she said. “The opportunity for long-term sustainable employment is a huge benefit to our community. The GEO Group has been contracted by the state government to run the prison. Ravenhall Correctional Centre will include 75 dedicated forensic mental-health beds,

more than doubling the current number across the system, as well as providing mental health services to a further 100 prisoners. The prison will be wired with more than 500 CCTV cameras and iris-scanning technology and will have a fire pit where traditional ceremonies can be held for the prison’s Aboriginal population. The cells, built as separate modules off-site, have been designed to help prevent the type of unrest seen at other prisons in recent years. – with Tom Cowie (The The Age Age)

Zara Keca is used to out-performing her competitors on the athletics track, but now she’s focused on success at the Miss World Australia National final later this week. The pageant queen will compete against 28 contestants for the Miss World Australia crown this Friday in Melbourne. The record-breaking hurdler and long jumper admits she was shocked when she was one of 15 young women chosen as finalists in the preliminary event for Miss World Victoria. “I certainly didn’t expect it,” she said. The Hillside teenager and former Lakeview Senior College student was crowned Miss Victoria at the final last month. The 18-year-old said the competition was a great way to raise money for Variety Australia, a charity that helps sick children or children with special needs that has provided invaluable support for her 22-year-old sister, Natalie. Zara has set herself some lofty goals after the finals too, when she gears up to represent Australia at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The Miss World Organisation founded the Beauty with a Purpose movement more than 35 years ago which focuses on encouraging women around the world to live a compassionate and humanitarian life.

It took just one day after Victoria’s new 40km/h speed limit when passing emergency vehicles was introduced before a truck slammed into the rear of a sedan north-west of Melbourne last week. Events leading up to the collision in Bacchus Marsh on July 2 began when a police divvy-van stopped along the Melbourne-bound lane of the Western Highway near the Lerderderg River bridges to help a broken down car about 7pm. The driver of an oncoming Toyota saw police lights and proceeded to slow down, adhering to the new rule that came into effect the day before – requiring drivers to slow to 40km/h when passing parked emergency vehicles. But a Hino truck travelling behind failed to slow down and smashed into the rear-end of the Toyota at high speed. Bacchus Marsh-based Leading Senior Constable Shaun Woodhouse said it was lucky nobody was seriously injured as the Toyota was a write-off. He called on all drivers to be aware of the new speed limits while passing emergency workers. “The Toyota driver has slowed down because of the new laws but the truck behind saw it too late,” Senior Constable Woodhouse said. An investigation is ongoing. The RACV previously raised concerns about the new rule, with its roads and traffic manager Dave Jones saying last month that the law needed to be more clearly explained to road users.

Share a brew or two How well do you know your local police force? If not well enough to put a name to a face of at least one of Brimbank or Melton’s hundreds of police officers, Acting Sergeant Robin Dampier hopes to change that over a hot cup of coffee. Once a month until the end of the year, police from Caroline Springs and Keilor Downs stations are hosting informal “Coffee with a Cop” events to give members of the public an opportunity to sit down with a police officer in a casual setting and simply have a chat, ask a question or raise any concerns they may have. No questions are off limits, said Acting Sergeant Dampier. He said the topics of conversation range from concerns about crime in the community, cyber safety and bullying at school.

“Some parents just bring their kids along so they can meet a police officer,” he said. “It’s really low key and enjoyable for everyone involved.” The initiative is run by Victoria Police’s proactive policing unit and doesn’t drag front line police off the beat. The concept was first trialled in the US by a Californian police officer charged with making his department more community oriented. It proved such a success it has since taken off in Australia, and now thousands of Coffee with a Cop events are held worldwide. Check the “Eyewatch – Brimbank Police Service Area” Facebook page for event details. Alexandra Laskie

Gym back on tender circuit By Esther Lauaki The battle to keep Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre gym open continues as Moorabool council calls on the public for a second time to run the health club. Moorabool council officially took over control of the leisure centre, including the gym, last week, ending a decade of management by Belgravia Leisure. The gym will be closed until August because equipment and instructors had not been secured by June 30 when the handover took place. Dozens of gym-goers have now been put out as the gym’s future remains uncertain.

In March, the council put the gym out for tender and received no interest. But at last Wednesday’s meeting, councillors voted to call for expressions of interest for a second time – this time with rent on a “peppercorn” agreement, free use of gym equipment and seed funding to help with set up and running costs. Gym member Chris Kiss said she and a number of other members were in tears as they left the gym for the last time. “The gym we have is very special and is more than just a place to exercise,” Ms Kiss said. “We have people of all different fitness levels … we’re just ordinary people.

‘‘

It’s really important for people who are socially - Chris Kiss isolated

’’

“Over the 20 years that I’ve been going there, I’ve met people with depression, shy, quiet and lonely people. Mothers with young people who don’t have a lot of adult company. “For all these people, it’s their escape. The gym is where they spend their ‘me’ time.” “It’s really important for people who are socially isolated. If not for this facility, they’d have nowhere

to go and council should recognise that and support these people. “When you look at the money that council spends on other things, this is not beyond them.” East ward councillor Jarrod Bingham has been vocal about saving the gym and agreed with Ms Kiss’ concerns. “This health club is servicing the elderly and those with disabilities,” Cr Bingham said. “If this health club were to close then these people would not be able to go anywhere within our shire.” Basketball competitions at the leisure centre will not be affected.

Living the dream Calling all dreamers! Organisers of the annual Melton South Dream Big festival need volunteers to help plan and deliver the popular community event. Local arts, culture, health, and wellbeing is the focus of the two-day festival, run by Djerriwarrh Health Services and Melton Festival for Healthy Living, to be held on September 15 and 16. Djerriwarrh Health Service chief executive Andrew Freeman said volunteers are needed to help with everything from setting up tables and chairs, running a barbecue and handing out tickets to putting up signs, taking photographs and helping people to find their way around. “We are looking for passionate, creative and interested Melton residents to help plan and deliver the event,” he said. “We also encourage local sports clubs, groups and organisations to

be involved in showcasing what Melton South has to offer. “Getting involved in the Dream Big Festival is a great way to connect with others in your community and to learn new skills, where you can help in big or small ways.” Anyone who has an interest in getting involved can call 9361 9300. Melton and Moorabool residents are being encouraged to give generously to Foodbank Victoria’s annual food appeal. Combined Churches Caring Melton is one of a number of organisations that operate foodbanks in the region and has had its shelves re-stocked with food donations throughout July as part of Foodbank Victoria’s statewide shop-and-share initiative. The Melton group’s chief executive, Denise Morris, says about 1200 families a year access the service and help is always needed. “We’re always in need of the daily basics – spreads, pasta sauces and tinned vegies and soups, especially in the winter months,” she said. “Stocks are always low. It’s essential that people get behind the Foodbank Victoria drive

so that they can continue to support smaller foodbanks like ours in Melton South.” Shoppers can support the campaign by triggering one-for-one donations each time they purchase a participating brand’s products at Woolworths Melton and Woodgrove. Foodbank Victoria chief executive Brianna Casey said the shop-and-share campaign aimed to remind Australians about issues that affects many families, individuals and children. “We’re relying on local Melton and Moorabool shoppers for their support,” she said. Combined Churches Caring Melton foodbank is at 100 Coburns Road, Melton South. Esther Lauaki

Crime spree: two charged

By Esther Lauaki The Melton community is rallying around a man who was recently diagnosed with motor neuron disease to help him achieve his dreams. Robbie Caliste was diagnosed with MND following two bad falls earlier this year – the first when he was out with friends and, in a heartbreaking turn, another while he was walking to work, right before hospital tests revealed his condition. There is still a lot to be learnt about MND and with no cure, the 34-year-old Brookfield man’s future could be short-lived.

He’s been so positive, so brave and so unbelievably - Samantha Morris strong

Robbie’s bucket list includes riding in a helicopter, visits to Graceland and Disneyland, eating frogs legs and snails and baking a cake for someone special. “After his diagnosis, we expected Robbie to spiral into depression and really struggle,” Ms Morris said.

’’

MND is a neurodegenerative disease that causes rapidly progressive muscle weakness. More specifically, the disease affects nerve cells that control the muscles that enable a person to move, speak, breathe and swallow. Mr Caliste’s best friends launched a crowdfunding campaign to help him tick some items off his greatest wishes. Samantha Morris is leading the campaign which has so far raised nearly $3000. The campaign has a $5000 goal to help with Mr Caliste’s medical expenses as well as his wish list. “This is for my funny, clumsy, brave best friend Rob,” she wrote on the GoFundme campaign web page. “When I named this page ‘Help Robbie Live’ I didn’t mean help keep him alive, because heartbreakingly that’s not possible, but we can help him live life to the full!”

Two men have been charged with 35 offences between them following a crime spree in Toolern Vale, Diggers Rest and Bacchus Marsh last week. Melton Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged a 29-year-old Burnside man with burglary, theft, handling stolen goods, possessing the proceeds of crime and possessing a drug of dependence in relation to the July 2 burglaries. He has also been charged with four counts of contravening bail conditions, one for committing an offence while on bail, theft, unlicensed driving and threats to damage property. Police also executed four outstanding warrants for assault, theft, drug possession and motor vehicle theft. A 26-year-old Melton man was also charged in relation to the same series of incidents. He was charged with burglary, theft, handling stolen goods, possessing proceeds of crime, unlicensed driving, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, possessing a drug of dependence and going equipped to steal. The Melton man was also charged with two counts each of assaulting police, resisting police and breaching bail conditions Police are calling for help to find property stolen on July 2 including motorbikes, trailers, a 4WD buggy, a front end loader and power tools. Big spending budget for Melton By Esther Lauaki The Taylors Hill area is a big winner in Melton council’s 2017-2018 budget, with $10 million earmarked for the construction of sports ovals, pavilions and courts in the new Taylors Hill West suburb. Melton council recently adopted the budget, which also includes funds to extend the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre and tennis complex and the redevelopment of MacPherson Park. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said significant investment in capital works and initiatives was made possible by the council’s grant funding success, revenue-stream diversification, debt

reduction and strategic forward planning. “Council will continue its strong investment in key infrastructure and services, with a $52.2-million investment in capital works projects, including $19 million for recreation infrastructure, $15.7 million for road works, $5.5 million for buildings, and $4.6 million for bridge works,” Cr Ramsey said. The council has budgeted $500,000 to upgrade female change rooms across Melton city and $1.305 million to replace footpaths. The duplication of Hume Drive, Taylors Hill, and upgrades to Bridge Road are among dozens of infrastructure works budgeted for the next financial year through its capital

From tip to parkland Moorabool residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and help plant 7000 new trees in Darley at the Grow West Community Planting Day this weekend. The annual planting day on July 16 is one of Grow West’s biggest events and is an important opportunity to rejuvenate and restore local landscapes. Moorabool council will be hosting the event at Telford Park, which is situated on 16 hectares of parklands. The park was a landfill site during the mid-20th century and, while some revegetation has occurred since then, more is required to prevent erosion that could affect local waterways, and to create habitat for native animals at the site. projects co-ordinator Helena Lindorff said she was excited to be teaming up with Moorabool council and the community for the event. “It’s very exciting to run our annual community planting day at a reserve where local residents will have a direct benefit once this area has been revegetated,” Ms Lindorff said. “With a bit of work from some dedicated volunteers, this park has the potential to be a significant community asset and improve the health of the local environment.” Grow West Community Planting Day runs from 9.30am to 4pm at Telford Park, 88 Wittick Street, Darley, Bacchus Marsh. works program. As well, the council has put aside $3.67 million for a streetscape upgrade in Melton township as part of the Pride of Melton project, and the construction of a bridge at Westwood Drive over the Kororoit Creek, expected to cost $2 million. Rate rises will be capped at two per cent this year in line with the state government-imposed limit, with the council expected to raise a total of $104 million in rates and service charges. The council says it will raise $7.65 million in municipal charges, up 6.6 per cent from the previous year. Pensioners will be eligible for a $70 rebate on their rates.

Meanwhile, the Council and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021 has also been released – a document that will guide Melton council in health and wellbeing decisions for the municipality over the next four years. “Our new vision … engenders community pride, a safe and diverse environment, where everyone is welcome, nurtured and given the opportunity to realise their greatest potential,” Cr Ramsey said. “It is the foundation upon which our new Council and Wellbeing Plan is built.” The 2017-2018 Budget and 2017-2021 Council and Wellbeing Plan can be viewed online at www.melton.vic.gov.au.

Study needs teachers

School is in for Burnside

By Esther Lauaki A Darley woman is calling on teachers to share their experiences and give feedback on inclusion and inclusive education for a research project. Janette Trento is completing a masters in educational psychology and has recruited 19 teachers to participate in her study looking into the issue – but she needs more. Ms Trento chose to explore inclusion in schools based on her own experience as a mother of two adult children with special needs.

‘‘

The state government is negotiating the purchase of land for a new primary school in Burnside. It is understood negotiations are in the final stages for a property at an undisclosed location that could become the home of Burnside primary school. A Department of Education spokesman said it was hoped the location for the new prep to year 6 school would be secured within the next few months. A community consultation period that sought input from residents about the school closed on July 2. Two design options were proposed and people were asked to provide feedback on how technology could be used, how to promote sustainability in the classroom, how to support emotional health and wellbeing and how best to get the community involved. The spokesman said they had a great response. “We have talked to hundreds of local families, including 1200 visits by more than 1000 people to our engagement website,” he said. “The feedback we are receiving from the Melton community will be collated and analysed so it can help shape the design and education framework.” The school will accommodate 475 students. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of next year and finish before December 30, ahead of its planned opening in time for 2019.

It’s a very important - Janette Trento area for me

’’

“It’s a very important area for me and it’s one that I am very passionate about,” Ms Trento said. “I’ve had a lot to do with education and I’ve done a lot of advocacy on inclusion in the education system and issues with equity and diversity. A lot of the issues that arise come back to knowledge and training.” Ms Trento said she hopes her research can be used to help teachers feel confident and prepared to support students of all abilities in mainstream classrooms. “To reduce or eliminate this fear of the unknown, or overwhelming concern about what impact inclusive education could have on us individually, requires improved understanding and knowledge,” she said. “We need to identify the current understanding and attitudes towards inclusion and inclusive education.

Janette Trento wants to hear from teachers working on inclusion. (Dennis Manktelow)

“We also need to identify what the barriers to inclusive education are, and communicate this to the government … and ensure that effective training and support is provided to the teachers.”

NEWS

She said her research won’t be limited to just the education of special needs students, but all students from all walks of life including refugees and different cultural backgrounds. Information: bit.ly/2sM6LN8

MY PLACE Daryl Akers has dedicated much of his life to “seeing the forest for the trees”. The Melton environmentalist spoke with Esther Lauaki.

I have lived in Melton for most of my adult life. My children were born here and grew up here. My grandchildren also live locally, meaning that I have a vested stake in the local community. How long have you lived in the area? About 35 years.

community and the environment, especially the natural environment. I am also passionate about the need to protect our local wildlife. However it is not enough to merely have laws protecting native wildlife. To do this effectively it is necessary to protect their habitat. Wildlife are like us, they cannot survive with nowhere to live. I would like to leave my local region a better place than I found it. We can all do this. Everyone who plants a tree does this. What other hats do you wear in the community?

Tell me about your background. I am an ex customs officer, having been retired for 10 years. The last 10 years, since leaving work, have been extremely busy. When I retired I found myself with a great deal of free time, especially as the kids had already left home to lead lives of their own. My first grandchild was born shortly after I retired, giving me more of an incentive to work toward protecting my environment. How did you become involved with the Melton Environment Group? I realised that the environment in and around Melton needed protection. I felt the need to become personally involved in my local community. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about my family, my local

As the children were growing up my wife and I were involved in supporting local institutions such as schools, Scouts and Girl Guides, and bands. What’s your favourite place to spend your time in the area? My favourite place to spend time is at our grandchildren’s’ home, spending time with them. After this I like to spend time in our local bushland, as well as along our local waterways. The Werribee River and our local creeks are havens of tranquillity, and home to a surprising diversity of birds. We are fortunate that Melton has managed to keep large numbers of old, picturesque trees beside our creeks. These old trees are not only beautiful to look at but they provide vital homes for native wildlife. Many other communities have lost these, and are the poorer for it.

What would people be surprised to know about you? People may be surprised that an ordinary person can make a difference to their local area. Anybody can do this, anybody can make a difference What is the best thing about Melton? Possibly the best thing about Melton is its sense of community and its strong spirit of volunteering. As well as a flourishing group of volunteer environmental groups, the Melton community also supports a host of other community activities. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? More respect for natural environment as the western region becomes more developed. A greater awareness of the value of our unique local native grasslands. There is little appreciation of these and they are seen mainly as real estate, valuable only as building sites. There is less than 0.06 per cent of our native grassland left, and we seem hell bent on destroying the pitifully tiny remnants that remain. Our local woodlands are similarly in need of protection. Many of our local woodland birds are totally dependent upon woodland habitat. If we lose these we also lose these unique birds.

to cater for hang-together and retreat times alike. Firstly, there’s a big, carpeted lounge room – through double doors off the entry hall. Then, around the kitchen, there’s a generous L-shaped living hub with double doors to a carpeted rumpus room – this opens to a covered deck at the back. Finally, again through double doors, there’s a theatre/kids’ retreat (or fifth bedroom) at the end of a long “bedroom” hallway. Lovely Tasmanian oak cabinetry is a striking kitchen feature, but perhaps the

starring role goes to the butler’s pantry – replete with cupboards and open storage. Caesarstone tops benches, including a waterfall island, and a 900mm cooker and a dishwasher are quality items. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an open en suite with dual basins. The rest of the fitted bedrooms range down a hallway and share the main bathroom, separate toilet and a laundry. A second covered deck, accessed from the hub, faces a big side yard which benefits from very pretty landscaping.

2

2

Back and side yards alike have islands of boxed flower beds in the midst of lawn, and perimeter plantings are equally stylish. Reached via a slatted-timber side gate, a Colorbond shed with attached open bay/ double carport meets the brief for a tradie, who will also value the study in the house. A chook house behind the shed couples with vegie patches to introduce nature’s bounty to kids and cooks, and there’s a garden shed to tidy things away. SPORT Lawrence’s freaky form results in an eight-goal haul Steve Lawrence has been a staple at Melton Hockey Club for years, and is closing in on 500 goals for the club, but he’s never had a day quite like last week. Going into the club’s Vic League Three clash with Collegians in round 10 needing a win to solidify a hold on a top four spot, Lawrence ensured they would walk away with the points and do so in style. While the side recorded a comfortable 9-0 victory, it was the six-goal haul from the striker which had the club talking. It was his best in the senior side, and remarkably comes after playing down the grades for the past three years due to injuries. Lawrence was magnanimous after the performance, praising the work of his teammates. “The last couple of weeks we’ve been

providing more pressure across the field, which in turn has provided us with more opportunities to score goals,” Lawrence said. “I was pretty lucky, I played centre striker so that was my job and it was good to get it done. “Only one goal came from a corner and the others were just finishing off the good work of the team to get it into the circle.” The haul shot Lawrence to the top of the competition goalscorers, with 14 goals from seven games heading into round 11. “I don’t think I’ve changed anything in my game, it’s just getting to the right spot and everyone else doing their little bit extra,” he said. “That’s my best performance in the firsts by a long way. “I generally score quite a lot of goals, but not in so few games so it’s nice to be at the top.” Far from being done for the day, the veteran

suited up in the reserves straight after the seniors, getting the chance to play with his sons. He slotted two more goals in the 4-0 win, giving him eight for the day. “I was really keen to get out there and play with my boys,” he said. “This was the first time we’ve played together, and it was straight after the seniors so I was a little bit sore after but it was good fun out there.” In the most recent round, Melton fell to Greater Dandenong 5-3, but kept their hold on fourth place ahead of this week’s game with third-placed ECHO. Ewen McRae Steve Lawrence went on a goal-scoring streak at the weekend. (Shawn Smits)

Burnside Heights was no match for Keilor Park in EDFL Division two action on Saturday, falling to an 85-point hammering. While the margin was a manageable 15 points at half-time, the Devils ran all over the visitors after the break to record the 18.13 (121)-5.6 (36) victory. Josh Covelli continued his good season with three of the Bears’ five majors, but it wasn’t enough to stop the home side recording their first win of the season. Burnside Heights will face second-placed Jacana this weekend.

Jets sizzle on big stage By Lance Jenkinson There was a lot of hype surrounding Western Jets prodigies Cameron Rayner and Lachlan Fogarty going into this football season. How could there not be some excitement after what the pair had achieved to that point in their junior careers – dominating school football, starring for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup, featuring in state squads and being chosen for the AFL academy? The glowing appraisals would count for little when it came to their AFL draft prospects if they did not impress on the big stage for Vic Metro in front of the recruiters at the under-18 national championships. Impress they did. Not only were they an integral part of Vic Metro’s title defence, they also received All Australian honours. Western Jets coach Torin Baker believes All Australian selections are fitting culminations for their junior careers. “They’ve had a lot of honours along the

way, but this really tops off their junior footy careers,” he said. Rayner, a product of the Hillside and Essendon Doutta Stars football clubs, was the talk of the press box for his incredible championships. Invariably, whenever his name popped up in conversations, someone would mention “Dusty”, in reference to Richmond star Dustin Martin. It’s unfair to a young player to liken their game to an AFL superstar, but the likeness in style is too much to ignore. Just like Dusty, Rayner, who plays midfield and forward, is a power runner, takes on opponents with his strength and dare and finishes neatly on the run. “He’s drawing comparisons to those sorts of players and it’s fair enough, because he’s now produced at a high level consistently,” Baker said. “Not only has he played a good championships, but his form when he played the academy games was very good. “He’s really strong, he’s really powerful – he just chances his arm at everything”

Fogarty overcame a tough preparation to have an impact in the midfield for Vic Metro. The former Spotswood junior was hampered by a groin injury and forced to miss the first game of the championships. Once back in the Big V, Fogarty delivered a high work rate, repeatedly getting to contests and extracting the ball for the outside runners. “He had a really interrupted few weeks leading up,” Baker said. “To come in and do what he did and play well in each of the games didn’t surprise me because that’s what happens with ‘Fogs’. “His greatest strength is his intensity around the ball, whether he’s winning it or putting on pressure – it’s what makes him the player that he is.” There were four Western Jets players selected in the triumphant Vic Metro squad. Forward-ruck Tristan Xerri featured in two games, while bottom-age player Buku Khamis will have to wait until next year for his debut. Xerri, a strong contested marking player, impressed in his limited games.

Caroline Springs had two players enjoy success at last week’s junior hockey state championships, with Aimee Jungfer and Nolan Cockburn winning gold in the under-15s and under-17s respectively. Playing for the North West Tigers, Jungfer and her team beat Central Flames 1-0 in the final, while Cockburn’s side beat the Western Wildcats 2-1 in their final. In club results, Caroline Springs’ women’s Pennant F side scored a thumping 16-0 win over Frankston on Saturday, with Fiona Bradford bagging four goals. The women’s Metro B side fell to a 3-2 loss to Powerhouse St Kilda, while the men’s Pennant G side lost 6-1 to PEGS.

BFL Netball

Bacchus Marsh played out a thrilling draw with Sebasopol on Saturday, with the two BFNL netball sides unable to be split from 41 apiece. Fiona Bayly scored 23 goals for the Cobras, while Madeline Hodgson provided good support with 18. Darley gave up a big early lead to North Ballarat City in its clash before eventually going down 66-41. Darley was efficient in front of the net, shooting at 90 per cent, but simply didn’t create enough chances. Melton and Melton south both suffered losses in their clashes, with Melton thumped 71-16 against Redan and the Souths going down in a tight one to Sunbury, 58-51. Erin Carlin had a remarkable day for Souths, with a perfect 44 goals from as many shots in the loss. One strong quarter gets Macedon over the line Macedon’s netballers were able to do what their footballers could not on Saturday, maintaining their unbeaten record with a comeback win over Diggers Rest at Bloomfield Reserve. While the visiting Cats only won one quarter for the day, that one dominant period of play proved enough to get them over the line, 49-45, and kept them a game clear of Romsey on top of the Riddell District Football Netball League A grade ladder. At-home Diggers Rest grabbed the early ascendency through Amy Carroll and Shelby Strong and they took a three-point lead into the first change. Both sides traded blows throughout the second quarter as they each scored 13 goals, but it was the third quarter which would prove the decisive term. The Cats outscored the hosts 16-7 to shoot to the lead, with Chloe Wilson unstoppable with 10 goals. The six-goal margin in the last quarter proved too much for the Burras, who had their best quarter with 15 goals but could not stop Macedon scoring at the other end as the visitors took the win. Wilson finished with 30 goals, while Strong

(20 goals) and Carroll (25) were strong all match. The win keeps Macedon on top, while Diggers hang onto sixth. Elsewhere, Melton Centrals was too strong for Woodend Hesket in its match, with a dominant second half delivering a strong 51-31 win. The two sides were tight early, with Centrals leading by just two points at the first change and four at half-time. Vanessa Seddon took control of the game in the third term – the Centrals goal shooter getting 11 goals for the quarter to stretch the game open. The Hawks had no answers in the final term as the home side continued to score freely and grab a good win. Sunbury Kangaroos were never in the contest against Rockbank, falling to a 21-55 loss. Rockbank wrapped up the points with a 29-9 first half, thanks largely to Jessica Herron who had 21 on her own. The Kangaroos nearly doubled their score with eight third-quarter goals, but it was too little too late as the Rams grabbed their second win of the season. Ewen McRae

Burras fight to the end By Ewen McRae Diggers Rest bounced back from its trouncing from Rupertswood last week in spectacular fashion, delivering Macedon its first defeat of the season on Saturday. After serving up its worst performance of the season last week, Diggers Rest was up for the fight against the Riddell District Football League ladder leaders from the opening bounce, overcoming a raft of injuries to run over the top of their opponents, 13.8 (86)-10.6 (66). The Burras home win was all the more meritorious as they ended the day with just one fit player on the bench, and came from behind in the fourth quarter to kick the final four goals of the game and clinch the points. Burras coach Shaun Sims said it was one of the best wins he had been a part of. “I’m very proud of the way we played, sticking it out for four quarters and getting the win,” Sims said. “They’re a quality outfit Macedon, they’re not undefeated for a reason, but I thought the pressure and intensity that we brought around the ball was in stark contrast to last week. “We’re a proud club, and we were outworked last week, but I had full faith that we would respond and I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud of the group as I was today.” It was a battle of attrition all day for both sides, with goals hard to come by as the pressure around the ball made space hard to find. The Burras held a slender three-point lead at the first change, but were 10 points behind at half-time as Macedon flexed its muscle and started to win the clearances. Goals were again hard to come by in the third, and every time Diggers Rest clawed closer to Macedon the visitors were able to hit back to restore the buffer. By early in the final quarter the home side was down to just one man on the bench, with Jack Wilson (broken nose), Pat Jackson (concussion) and Josh Wallace (ankle) all ruled out of the game, and when Macedon goaled twice early in the last to stretch to a 15-point lead it looked like they might run over the top of the home side. But from halfway through the last quarter it was all Diggers, with some big marks and goals inside 50 to Taylor Hine and Nathan Maisano giving the side the momentum and the rest of the side finding some run in the legs to finish stronger than the Cats. Frustrations boiled over late for Macedon’s Alastair Collins as he was yellow carded for his part in a scuffle when the result was sealed. The win keeps Diggers Rest in third place, two games clear of Sunbury Kangaroos. “We said before the game that it was going to be tight, and it might take four or five contests 40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 11, 2017

to move the ball forward, and to our guys’ credit they did that all day,” Sims said. “That was a finals-intensity game, and a few of the chase-down tackles and the pressure from us in the last quarter is what we need to

bring every week. “We’ll get some guys back in the next month and start settling the side down for finals but, as far as we’re concerned, the season is just starting.”

No Fevola, no problem for the Panthers Melton South jumped back to sixth on the Ballarat Football League ladder on Saturday, proving far too strong for Sunbury at Sunbury after half-time. The Panthers, playing without star forward Brendan Fevola, had control for most of the day as they recovered from a bad second quarter to walk away with a 13.7 (85)-7.9 (51) win. It was a victory built on a dominant opening term in which the visitors kicked the only three goals of the quarter. After a brief Sunbury comeback that trimmed the margin to four points at half-time, it was all the Panthers after the long break. Without the Fevola focal point, Melton South had 10 different goalkickers for the match as it kicked nine goals to four in the second half. Darley fell to a disappointing loss to 10th-placed North Ballarat City, but managed to hang on to third place on percentage. The two sides traded blows early, but the visitors were able to gradually pull away from Darley after quarter-time to record a 11.13 (79)-8.11 (59) victory. It was a dour struggle for much of the day, with just seven goals between the two sides up to half-time. While the game opened up in the final term, City had established a buffer and was able to hit back every time Darley looked like mounting a challenge. Melton was left to rue a wasteful start against Redan, kicking 0.7 in the opening term before eventually falling to a 13-point loss. The Bloods were able to claw back into the contest in the second and third quarters to level the scores by half-time, but the toll showed in the final quarter as Redan kicked three goals to one to grab the points. It was a costly loss for Melton, which slipped to eighth and face’s second-placed Bacchus Marsh this week. Bacchus Marsh was clinical in its clash with Sebastopol, kicking seven first-quarter goals to set up an early lead on its way to a 22.19 (151)-11.7 (73) triumph. Alec Del Papa finished with six goals for the Cobras and Ryley Stuhldreier snared five in the thrashing. Ewen McRae

2017 Nissan Pathfinder

N

issan reckons the Pathfinder is Australia’s forgotten SUV, even if it has managed to sell 70,000 of them to Australians in the past three decades. The big unit is arguably hiding in plain sight – there are thousands of them on the road, in garages and at dealerships – but Nissan’s contender hasn’t proven quite as popular as rivals from the likes of Toyota, Mitsubishi, Ford and Jeep. So Nissan gave its family SUV a mid-life makeover, adding new looks, more power and additional tech to the seven-seater. As before, the Pathfinder is available in three model grades – ST, ST-L and Ti. All three feature a reworked 3.5-litre V6 engine that now benefits from direct injection, helping it produce 202kW and 340Nm while using slightly less fuel than the outgoing model. The range starts at $41,990 for the base Pathfinder ST, which costs $500 more than before but adds restyled 18-inch wheels, a new digital driver display and updated 8.0-inch infotainment screen. More important changes reserved for the mid-range ST-L and top-end TI include a range of active driver aids such as autonomous emergency braking with forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert and active cruise control systems. Priced from $53,690, the ST-L also features twin sunroofs, heated front leather seats, sat nav, blind spot monitoring and more. At the top of the range, the $62,190 Pathfinder TI adds luxuries such as 20-inch wheels, a motion-activated power tailgate, LED headlights, heated and cooled leather seats and dual rear screens. All-wheel-drive is a $3500 option in the Pathfinder ST, and $4000 in the better-equipped ST-L and TI.

B Y THE NU M B E R S PRICE \ From $41,990 to $69,190 plus on-road costs ENGINE \ 3.5-litre petrol V6 or 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid POWER \ 202kW at 6400rpm or 188kw at 5600rpm TORQUE \ 340Nm at 4800rpm or 330Nm at 3600rpm TRANSMISSION \ CVT automatic, front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive FUEL USE \ 9.9-10.1L/100km (V6) or 8.6-8.7L/100km (hybrid) TO TEST DRIVE \ nissan.com.au

An unchanged all-wheel-drive four-cylinder hybrid engine with 188kW costs $3000 more than all-wheel-drive ST-L and TI models, or $2500 more than a standard ST as a two-wheel-drive proposition. Rather than being a car for “I, “me or “we, the Pathfinder – Nissan says – is a car primarily bought for “them, growing families who need space. They won’t be worried that the stability control system is quite grabby, that the steering kicks back excessively over corrugations and the V6 engine’s punch can easily overwhelm the front tyres of two-wheel-drive models when driven with determination. Instead, the Pathfinder’s well-sorted ride and better-than-average refinement could win the support of little ones as well as their full-grown guardians.
