Mystery beckons There will be an element of mystery behind the Diggers Rest Fire Brigade’s upcoming fundraiser. Ticket sales have started for the brigade’s inaugural Great Ball of Fire event, a masquerade-themed fundraiser to raise money towards a new fire fighting appliance. Fundraising co-ordinator Maree Walshe said that a new fire truck for Diggers Rest would have wide reaching benefits. “Our brigade operates on a 100 per cent volunteer basis and has been providing essential emergency response services to Diggers Rest, the surrounding districts … since 1969. “Recent times has seen major development and an increase of residents … twice over. The development has … dictated that we also need to change and update the assets to move with the area.” Ms Walshe said the masquerade ball, to be held on the Russo Estate, was the brigade’s main event in its fundraising efforts to raise $175,000. The Great Ball of Fire ball is on May 26 at 760 Holden Road, Diggers Rest. Details: fundraising@drcfa.com.au Esther Lauaki

Solid drop in crime stats By Esther Lauaki Police operations targeting offenders after dark are showing results as Melton’s crime rates continue to fall. Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last Thursday revealed a 12 per cent fall in offences recorded in the year to December – 10,634 offences, down from 12,082. A main driver behind the drop was a 16.6 per cent decrease in public order and security offences which included an 18.5 per cent decrease in theft offences (from 4499 to 3664), a 14.2 per cent drop in burglary and break and enter (1293 to 1109) and 41 per cent decline in

arson offences (120 to 71). There was also a 30.5 per cent downturn in drug offences from 630 to 438. Drug dealing fell by 44 per cent while drug use and possession offences were down 27.3 per cent. A recent spate of home invasions in Melton was reflected in the latest robbery figures which revealed a 10 per cent rise in aggravated robbery. Melton tasking co-ordination Inspector Warren Green told Star Weekly in September that police were running operations to specifically target “crime after dark”. “We’ve seen a change in offending patterns with some of our offenders,” he said.

infocus T U R N T O

“They’re becoming more opportunistic … we have operations running at the moment to target those. “We’d encourage people to be out with others when they’re going out at vulnerable times and … if something is not quite right, call the police so we can get someone down there.” Despite the overall fall in Melton crime, crimes against the person increased slightly by 3.5 per cent. They included abduction and related offences up to 21 from 16. Blackmail also climbed from two offences to nine in the past year. Meanwhile, Moorabool crime fell by 15.2 per cent, driven by a 21 per cent drop in property

and deception offences, a 37 per cent decline in drug offences and a 22 per cent fall in justice procedures. Data for Melton and Moorabool was on trend and police minister Lisa Neville praised the 10 per cent decrease statewide as being “the biggest drop in crime in 12 years”. “With more police on the beat than ever before, the relentless work of Victoria Police is starting to make progress,” Ms Neville said. But she said there were still too many victims. “Saying crime is coming down in no way diminishes the harm, pain and fear many of those victims have suffered,” she said. Details: bit.ly/2IqY6no

New schools for outer suburbs By Esther Lauaki The state government has purchased three sites to make way for a secondary and two primary schools in Melton. A package was announced last week to buy land for more than a dozen new schools across Melbourne’s fastest growing areas including Cobblebank, Rockbank and Deanside. Education minister James Merlino said the $236.8 million investment would buy land for 14 new school sites which also include Clyde North, Cranbourne West, Mickleham, Wollert,

Wyndham Vale and Pakenham. A site will also be acquired in Seddon for a new Seddon campus as part of the Footscray Learning Precinct. “We’re breaking the cycle of short-term planning for new schools and investing now to meet the needs of the future,” Mr Merlino said. “Right across the state we’re building new schools to make sure that no matter where they live, every child has the chance to get a great education.” Melton councillor Steve Abboushi welcomed

the news on Facebook saying it was “great news for Melton and our residents”. Premier Daniel Andrews said the investment in infrastructure would be beneficial for years to come. The state government has already invested $2.5 billion into school infrastructure needed

to meet the needs of Victoria’s growing student population until 2019. Mr Andrews said the new school sites were identified following analysis of demographic data and enrolments at existing schools. “Whether it’s in Pakenham or out in the west we’re giving local families the certainty they need that their kids will be able to attend a great local school, close to home,” he said. Community engagement about the schools will start soon with details available at the Victoria School Building Authority website: www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au

Speedsters and drivers who flouted the road rules copped the most fines on Melton and Moorabool roads during a statewide blitz. Police conducted Operation Arid during the Labour Day long weekend and 47 drivers in Melton and 71 in Hume were nabbed for speeding. The four-day operation ran from midnight on March 9 to midnight March 12. In Melton, 14 unregistered vehicles were picked up, along with 12 unlicenced drivers and six who were disqualified. Only one driver was found to be over the alcohol limit but seven were under the influence of drugs. Road policing assistant commissioner Doug Fryer said it was concerning the number of drug drivers had increased statewide compared to last year’s operation with one in every six motorists detected with drugs in their system. “Time and time again we plead to those taking to our roads to take care, to not speed, to not use phones and to not drink and drive,” assistant commissioner Fryer said. “It is frustrating and just terribly sad that over the weekend another six families now face the true reality of road trauma. “Safe road user behaviour starts with every single one of us. “The operation may have finished however our members will still be focused on keeping you safe on the roads.” Eight unregistered vehicles were picked up on Moorabool roads and three drivers were detected using their mobile phone.

Mum’s sentencing pain By Esther Lauaki The mother of a Brookfield teenager fatally struck by a car last year has vowed to have the case re-opened after an unlicensed driver was sentenced to 80 hours of community service. Supporters of the victim’s family held a vigil outside Sunshine Magistrates Court when driver and mother-of-seven, Ayou Deng, was sentenced last Tuesday. Members of far-right group the True Blue Crew, who had gathered outside the court, hurled abuse at Deng and labelled the sentence “a joke”.

‘‘ ’’

You do the crime, you do - Olivia Yassine the time Deng was behind the wheel when 13-year-old Jalal Yassine-Naja was fatally struck as he crossed the road in Brookfield on his skateboard on March 14 last year – nearly a year to the day of the sentencing. Deng was not charged after the incident was deemed an accident. She received 80 hours community work for unlicensed driving, as well as unrelated unlawful assault and criminal damage offences. Jalal’s mother, Olivia Yassine, vowed to appeal for an inquiry to have the case re-examined in the hope police can pursue more charges. “I want it to be acknowledged that she killed a person – my son – and she ran over him. And she did wrong. You do the crime, you do the time,” Ms Yassine said. “That’s not right. I will fight for my son. It doesn’t matter what it takes. I will get answers out of this and I will appeal it.”

A Brookfield resident, who was first on the scene last March, was among those outside court last week. The woman, who asked not to be named, said she had serious concerns about the police investigation. “She [Deng] did not render any assistance to Jalal while he was lying on the road,” the woman

told Star Weekly. “The police spoke to me that morning very briefly and I fully expected to have to make a statement but they’ve never come and asked me a single question again. “I think it’s unbelievable that she would be sentenced 80 hours community work after a child was killed because of her actions.”

We can do better: V/Line V/Line has committed to improving performance on the Ballarat line after recent data showed punctuality and reliability at their lowest since November. Recent figures show 82.1 per cent of services arrived at their destination on time last month, which was slightly down on January (83.5), December (83.9) and November (86.3). V/Line chief executive James Pinder said a higher-than-normal number of train faults contributed to the delays. “We know that punctuality of services on the Ballarat line isn’t good enough and we’re working on what we can do better,” Mr Pinder said. “V/Line has a plan in place to lift performance but we know more needs to be done to ensure we’re delivering a service our passengers deserve.” He said delays to Ballarat line services could also be contributed to the additional time trains were required to stop at stations to allow passengers to board and depart services. For reliability, 94.9 per cent of services were delivered for the month. An emergency services incident at Melton resulted in several services being replaced by coaches in the afternoon peak. Mr Pinder said V/Line crews worked across the Labour Day long-weekend to complete $2.7 million in upgrades and improvements along the Ballarat line. Project hits right note With paint brushes and tools in hand, Melton Primary School pupils have “composed” an interactive outdoor music area. Pupils from grades 3 to 6 participated in the painting of a piano and the construction of a music wall and a giant xylophone. Performing arts teacher Adriana Timpani said the music area was established to encourage students to engage with each other, boost their confidence and improve attendance. “This outcome exceeded expectations – students showed such pride and engaged in team work,” she said. She said the pupils were often pointing out their contributions to other students and people in the school community. “Attendance of lunch-time Arts Clubs has

increased by more than double,” she said. “On the days of the project, attendance of the selected students was almost 100 per cent.” While these were short-term outcomes achieved, Ms Timani said that in the long term students felt a sense of belonging and have a “safe and happy space” to spend time during their breaks. Ms Timani hopes the music area will “foster a love for the arts, a passion they can hopefully become confident in and use in their education moving onward.” The project has been funded by Barnardos and ALDI through their Enrich school grants program. No retreat on Diggers safety bid By Serena Seyfort Pressure for VicRoads to improve safety along a stretch of Vineyard Road is being ramped up. Campaigns for changes to the arterial road by Diggers Rest residents and Melton council are continuing after VicRoads declined to install safety barriers in response to resident fears. Locals are concerned by the number of accidents happening on the road, on which drivers are permitted to travel at 80km/h near Diggers Rest Early Learning Centre, Diggers Rest Medical Centre and houses.

Dale Wright, who lives next door to the early learning centre, said he had been at the scene of four crashes near his property in the past nine months. He said his neighbour had told him she had attended six crashes on the road. But Mr Wright said the number of near-misses was of more concern. “We are constantly hearing people skidding and brakes and tyres screeching,” he said. “People are not realising the road conditions until they get right into it. “Someone’s going to turn the corner and fly right into my house.”

Melton council has moved to write to VicRoads to request it undertake a thorough investigation into incidents on Vineyard Road, reduce the speed limit to 60km/h and immediately install safety barriers. The council previously wrote to VicRoads in November requesting it look at installing safety barriers on the road. In January, VicRoads issued a statement saying it would not install safety barriers. “VicRoads’ assessment found that there are no significant roadside hazards present at this location, vehicles posed no obvious threat of

‘running’ off the road, and the delineation of the road is considered appropriate,” it said. Diggers Rest resident David O’Connor said many residents felt uncomfortable with the possibility that a vehicle could easily leave the road and collide with buildings. Mr O’Connor and other concerned residents contacted Sunbury MP Josh Bull following VicRoads’ decision. Mr Bull has since written to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, requesting him to ask VicRoads to review its decision and undertake further investigation.

Leverage for beverages Young entrepreneurs at Lakeview Senior College are getting a sip of what it’s like to run a small business. Year 11 and 12 students started a mobile business, dubbed the VCAL Coffee Cart Cafe, running, managing and selling hot beverages and snacks as part of their final years’ of study. All the profits from the cafe are donated to a variety of local causes as well as the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Supervising teacher Melanie Brooks said the enterprise would give students a taste of the “real world”. “The VCAL teaching team thought it would be fantastic to allow the students to run their own business to gain practical skills along with theoretical knowledge,” Ms Brooks said. “Students researched a few different kinds of business before settling on a cafe to service the college community.” She said they built the business from the

ground up – literally. “Students worked with tradesmen to design and build the coffee cart,” Ms Brooks said. “They also recycled milk crates, wooden pallets and coffee bean bags to make stools and tables for the cafe customers.” The students will complete barista training and safety and food handling certificates as part of the project. Ms Brooks said she hoped the students learnt practical business skills, teamwork and co-operation and a sense of community contribution from the project. Esther Lauaki

Ballan totally mad for autumn By Esther Lauaki Ballan was nearly cleaned out of Mad Hatter tea party costumes and accessories in the lead-up to the town’s autumn festivities. The annual Ballan Autumn Festival’s quirky theme was brought to life last Sunday by the crowds who rolled into town to enjoy the best food, drink, entertainment and market stalls that Ballan has to offer. Festival committee vice president Matthew Grindrod said the town had been abuzz for months before the festival – which is now in its 43rd year. “You can’t help it, there’s something about this year’s theme that makes you smile and it’s infectious,” Mr Grindrod said. “From the hay bales decorated by the Ballan 1st Scout Group to the, ‘Here, there and everywhere’ sign outside the post office … it’s enough to make you grin as wide as the Cheshire Cat. “They say we’re all mad here in Ballan and it’s easy to see why.” A main spectacle from the festival was the Ballan farmers’ market grand street parade and float competition that celebrated various groups from the community. Other highlights included the Queen of Hearts cake decorating competition, the Drink me drag queen show, the quilting exhibition and the woodchop. Ballan Autumn Festival Association president Kevin Harper said this year’s engagement from the community “generated a momentum of its own”. “Support and interest this year has come from as far afield as Beaconsfield,” Mr Harper said. Troy “Tee Mac” wants to take his anti-bullying program into schools. (Esther Lauaki)

“When I was in my early 20s my best mate died in a basketball accident and it made me think that I have to do something positive with my life because you never know how long you’ve got.” The main aim of Tee Mac’s program is to teach kids to stay on a positive path. “I took on music and ended up touring

around Australia, America and Europe,” he said. “If I can survive the loss of my best friend, my first daughter, my father and my pop who was a second father to me … and still go on to achieve my goals, then I want to help kids do the same. “If I can inspire kids to achieve what they want to achieve … it will be worth it.”

Troy “Tee Mac” prides himself on being an unconventional motivational speaker. The heavily tattooed former gang member turned musician is on a mission to help kids achieve their goals. Tee Mac, his stage name, is spreading his positive message by coaching a Sunbury youth basketball team on Saturdays – but he wants to take his anti-bullying program into schools throughout the west. The Melton resident is calling on schools and the council to talk more about bullying and gang culture. He said that his efforts to promote the program in more than 200 schools in the west has been met with resistance. “I’ve been trying my hardest to get the program into the schools but it’s almost as if nobody wants to admit that there is a problem,” Tee Mac said. “You can’t get someone in to talk to these kids if they haven’t lived through it. You need someone like me, who knows what it’s like. “I want young people to know that they are not alone and there’s always someone that you can turn to and it doesn’t have to be in gangs.” Tee Mac joined a gang between the ages of 17 to 22 in Broadmeadows after being bullied through school. It was only through music and self belief that he decided to turn his life around, he said. “The idea came about through my life experiences,” Tee Mac said. “I had been bullied all throughout primary school and high school and eventually I found myself in the wrong crowd when I left high school. “I felt accepted by them … but I was fortunate enough not to get into any trouble.

Sydenham bridge a blank canvas By Tate Papworth The search is on for an artist to help Sydenham’s newest road bridge come to life. Artists are being invited to submit expressions of interest to the Level Crossing Removal Authority for the design of artwork for open space beneath the eastern side of the bridge built to replace the level crossing on the Melton Highway. The Level Crossing Removal Authority and Brimbank council will compile a shortlist of

applicants, who will then be asked to develop proposals. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins said the project would offer the winning artist plenty of scope for creativity. “This is a great opportunity for someone to come up with art that reflects and celebrates our local community,” she said. The Level Crossing Removal Authority said it hoped the artwork would encourage use of public space by members of the community and showcase a high level of artistic skill,

innovation and aesthetics. The winning design would also need to reflect the unique cultural history, environment and sense of community of Sydenham. Both the creativity of the design and the applicant’s qualifications and experience, would be considered. However, there are no set guidelines or specifications for the commission and Aboriginal artists, experienced artists, and emerging artists are being encouraged to apply.

One side of the Melton Highway’s new bridge was opened to drivers and pedestrians in February this year. Once work on an additional three lanes is completed, the other side of the bridge will be opened. Submissions of expression of interest for the artworks are being accepted until Friday, March 30, with the project intended to be completed by July this year. Sprinting into history The Myrniong Historic Car Sprint is racing toward its 16th year. Featuring vintage and historic racing cars dating back to the early 20th century, the annual event will be back next month to raise money for the Myrniong Hall restoration. A hundred competitors will be racing along an 850 metre section of Myrniong-Korobeit Road. Race secretary of the Austin 7 Club and Myrniong Hall Committee, David Lowe, said most of the cars were fairly mature and travel at high speeds. “We feature cars between 1920 and 1930. And we run cars up to about 1975, which include Mustangs and Camaros,” he said. “But there are a lot of MG sports cars and Austin Healeys. “A lot of the cars are travelling over 160 to 170 kilometres in the lower stages before they go up to the hill. “So, the speed is quiet high.”

Mr Lowe said they received welcome support from the Moorabool council. “The council is very co-operative with us,” he said. “They look after us. They maintain the condition of the road, which is most important. “And it’s most important considering the speeds that are obtained on it.” There will also be a classic car display and catering by the Myrniong Hall committee. It’s on Sunday, April 8, from 9am-4pm. Sena Senbay

All about action in April Pupils at Pentland Primary School are ready for action this April after participating in the Premier’s Active April health initiative for a number of years. Active April is calling all Melton residents to get moving and commit to 30 minutes of exercise every day next month. Pentland Primary School’s sports co-ordinator, Rick Wells, said the school has been involved in the program for so long because of the benefits. “Our kids are more interested and more aware of activity and nutrition. And I think that they’re probably fitter than they were,” he said.

MY PLACE Ballan will always hold a special place for Matthew Grindrod. He speaks with Sena Senbay about his role in one of the town’s most popular festivals. What is your connection to Melton/ Moorabool?

have been the vice president and secretary of the Ballan Autumn Festival Association since then. Each year I’m amazed at what our dedicated group of volunteers achieve. Together we have successfully planned, managed and executed two large-scale festivals in addition to a number of smaller extra fundraising events in-between. To achieve this feat, our volunteer committee collectively give over 10,000 hours of their own time and expertise. If I were to put a round figure of $25 per hour on this effort, our committee contributes over $250,000 into our community.

We moved from Melbourne to Ballan after a visit to the Ballan Farmers Market one weekend. Ballan was buzzing and everyone was so welcoming! My partner and I loved the area, the people and the beautiful tree-lined streets. It reminded us of the small town we had left behind in England. How long have you lived in the area? We’ve lived in the area now for almost four years – we purchased our first home in Ballan and it will always have a special place in our hearts!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

What do you love most about the area?

What are you passionate about? From a young age, I’ve had a fascination with trains. My uncle was a train driver and growing up, all I wanted to do is drive trains. Mum and dad talked me out of it, but I had great pleasure in telling them that I had landed my dream job with the railways – driving the direction of our digital channels rather than the trains themselves!

(Supplied)

The community and it’s welcoming embrace. When we first moved to the area and started renovating our house, we had complete strangers offer to lend us the tools from their shed. If you ever need anything, there’s always someone who’s willing to help. A problem shared is a problem solved is so true in our area.

Some might think I’m a creature of habit and love being at home, but I always have a burning desire for adventure! I love to travel and experience new things – live like the locals! If money was no object, I’d be off travelling the world and experiencing something new every day.

Needless to say, one of my favourite past times is train spotting. And there’s now one less item on the bucket list – I recently was able to test drive V/Lines’ train simulator used for training drivers. Tell me about your involvement in the community? Getting involved really opens doors. It was just

after we moved to the area that my partner and I saw an ad on Facebook about the upcoming Ballan Autumn Festival and thought we could lend a hand. After attending our first festival, we were blown away by what a group of volunteers can achieve and wanted to get more involved. The next BAF meeting happened to be the AGM at which point, the association was short a secretary. I threw my hat into the ring, and

If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Being a foodie, I’d love a greater variety and diversity of dining options – I love to experience unique flavours from all over the world. While there are many great places to dine in our area, for something different when we’re feeling adventurous, we find ourselves heading into Melbourne for dumplings, Thai or our favourite – Asian fusion at ChinChin or Red Spice Road.

Get it right the first time with

Terry Charles spruiks the benefits of the program. (Joe Mastroianni)

Program kicks goals Delahey man Terry Charles credits the Sons of the West program with helping him through a tough time in his life, and he is encouraging more men to get involved. Mr Charles, 51, a Western Bulldogs supporter his whole life, said he was at a low point several years ago as he struggled with depression and the effects of heavy medication. He said it was Sons of the West, a free program for men focusing on healthy living and healthy lifestyles, that helped him out of a slump and gave him a leg-up. Mr Charles is now an advocate for the program, which welcomes men aged 18 and over to get involved. “Last year we even had an 85-year-old man with a broken leg join in the group – if he can

do it, anyone can,” Mr Charles said. “Get out there and do it. It’s a lifesaver.” The program gives men important health prevention strategies and what they can do to be on top of their health. It will run at St Albans Community Centre in St Albans, every Wednesday from 7-9pm until May 16. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the benefits of the program were proven, and had a positive impact on the western suburbs communities. “Sons of the West doesn’t just give men a boost to their physical health,” Cr Giudice said. “Becoming part of a social group gives a sense of belonging.”

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir says a few tweaks have transformed Sahra’s Sahra’s Kitchen is the final regular Racecourse Road Somalian eatery to be covered by CTS. We’ve held off for a couple of reasons. We’ve eaten here a heap of times, but truth be told it has long seemed to operate, at least partially, as something of a community hub for the local Somalian community. While we’ve always been made to feel welcome, it has presented as being a little less open and viable for members of the general public. Plus, the last time I stepped in here, they’d run out of rice! There’s no such problems this time around as Bennie and settle in for a mid-week dinner. Indeed, the place had been tidied up and refreshed. There’s cool, matching furniture and even some artwork on the walls. We find the service prompt and cheerful. Sahra’s Kitchen is definitely open for your business. And there’s rice in the house! The menu is quite long and varied, running to breakfast dishes and a tuna sandwich. There’s even a transnational touch in the form of an injera meal. I’m told that’s unavailable this night, so Bennie and I opt for our regular rice/pasta with meat ($15). But first, soup – of course! Here the lamb-based concoction is cloudy – almost like a “cream of” soup. It’s delicious. There’s nary a trace of meat yet the whole thing is profoundly and deeply flavoured with lamb.

SAHRA’S KITCHEN Address: 303 Racecourse Road, Flemington Phone: 9044 7337 Bennie’s pasta combo with lamb and my rice combo with lamb are excellent, matching in every way the quality found elsewhere on this magical strip. Bennie’s spaghetti and its tomato-based sauce is not as wet as some, nor as dry as others, and a touch more oily. He slurps up every strand with glee. My rice is fine but plain. All the lamb is tender and wonderful – even the more hunka chunks. A friend commented this week how he finds the Somalian food at one of his new faves varies depending on who is manning the stoves. We like that about all our favourite Somalian joints, that the food is hardly ever the same. It varies depending not just on who is in the kitchen but also on the hour of the day and the day of the week. In this case, we are blessed with plentiful amounts of pan-tanned veg – onion, carrot, capsicum and even some broccoli. If not the best part of our meals, the vegetable factor is certainly the crowning glory. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

Sweet smell of success They’ve always been a forward-thinking mob at Auto Passion, so it’s not surprising they’re about to launch a new and exclusive product to remove – not merely mask – odours that emanate from air-conditioning vents. This product, made up of several components, also removes nine different bacteria known to cause ill-health and respiratory problems.

D

eveloped and patented by Auto Passion’s manager Jim Paras, a machine introduces a dry vapour into the vents which literally “eats” odours and airborne pathogens such as fungi, moulds and viruses. Jim was motivated to develop his product because he was “sick of his kids being sick” after commutes between Sydney – where he ran a business – and Melbourne. “I had my car vents swabbed by a lab and they found an amazing array of pathogens present,” Jim explains. “It took me a year but I eventually developed a machine and sourced products from Europe that removed all pathogens and smells coming from the vents.” Jim and Auto Passion owner Vince Bartolo say the product is fantastic for cars, particularly those bought second-hand, affected by cigarette smells. And it rids cars of the kids’ soccer shoe and takeaway food smells and airborne pathogens. “I once used the product on a luxury car severely affected by cigar smells and no one would buy it from him. I used the product and he was able to sell it straightaway. And because the product is a dry vapour and isn’t alcohol-based [think Glen 20 et al], smells and pathogens don’t return unless the vehicle is re-contaminated.” If you’re unlucky enough to have a vehicle accident, call the office straightaway and speak to Beck who will steer you in the right direction.

“Loan vehicles are available for private and all insurance work,” Beck says. “The same goes for not-at-fault insurance claims. “If the office isn’t open at the time of the accident, get the car home and call us in the morning. We’ll handle it all from there.” Auto Passion has also become an Opti-coat provider. Vince explains what this high-tech product can do for luxury motors and trucks to the family wagon. “Opti-coat, applied once to a vehicle’s duco, doesn’t degrade over time with UV and chemical exposure, like waxes and other sealants do,” he says. “It will save hours spent waxing and polishing, and also give the car owner peace of mind that their valuable asset is protected from the environment.” Vince, who has more than 35 years’ experience and a talent with all-things cars, says he and his team love everything about cars. This puts them in the box seat when it comes to general car maintenance and repairs. Auto Passion is rapidly evolving into a one-stop panel shop - from tyre sales to custom paintwork and everything in between. Auto Passion, 12 Station Street, Bacchus Marsh. Melton’s top-shelf HQ for top tints Daniel Stewart set up his own window tinting business nearly three years ago – and now he’s on track to being the most recommended independent tinter around. Before founding Melton Car Tint, he operated for 12 years under the Tint-A-Car banner, so he has a bunch of experience in the field.

D

aniel says he became an independent operator because he believed he could deliver a superior and more personal service doing things his way. He shares a story that backs that up. “We once had a customer who went to a ‘cheap backyard’ tinter with poor results,” Daniel says. “Three weeks later, when she came back to inspect our stripping and re-tinting job, she was ecstatic. On the road with Jayco Ballarat As a caravanner of many years, Scott McPherson knows a thing or two about the favourite way Australians love to see their vast country. He started out in farming and ran a business, then – about 10 years ago – he and his partners decided the caravan industry was for them so they took up ownership of Jayco Ballarat.

E

stablished 40 years ago, Jayco Ballarat is now regional Victoria’s largest caravan dealer. Spread out on about 2.4 hectares, the dealership has 80 new and used caravans on site and employs 13 service and 11 retail-office staff. Scott says getting through the global financial crisis was a challenge that required hard work and persistence to survive. “It was worth the effort because the industry – and the lifestyle that comes with it – makes it a pleasure to be part of the Jayco family,” he says. “Sharing this experience with our clients and then hearing about their travels and/or dreams is an absolute highlight. “Whether it is a young family taking a ‘gap’ year and sharing what they have planned, or a seasoned traveller heading to far north-west WA for the 10th time, it’s always exciting to hear where people are going or have been. “Being involved with Jayco is another constant highlight. “Working in partnership with a manufacturer committed to the industry and long-term growth of our own product is brilliant.” Scott has carefully chosen his team

members for their friendly, can-do attitude and high level of commitment to quality. “Our team is our business,” he says. “This starts with our retail staff – however, our technicians and detailers are equally important. Because our detailers and technicians care about the quality of their

work, our clients have a better experience. They look at each job as if it were their own and think about how they would want their own van treated.” With Easter coming up fast – and winter caravan travel to Australia’s north on the horizon – Scott says people should act soon

if they want a new caravan as stocks are limited. Jayco Ballarat, 217-231 Learmonth Road, Wendouree. Opens 8.30am-5.30pm weekdays and 9am-4pm Saturdays. Inquiries: 5339 3072 or visit jaycoballarat.com.au

Heathdale and the love of learning One of the biggest decisions parents make is choosing the right school for their child. Each school is different. Ross Grace, Heathdale Christian College principal, believes the Melton primary campus provides a unique learning community for families.

(Pictures: Supplied)

M

r Grace says the Melton school, established four years ago, has quickly established a reputation for learning excellence. “Learning is at the heart of what we do as a community,” he says. “Our teachers nurture a student’s natural desire to be curious, to explore, play and develop a sense of awe and wonder of God’s world. “As students grow and learn, they develop wisdom, discernment and skills of deep learning, which enables them to become highly effective learners who want to achieve their very best. This is what we, as a college, are about. “We teach students from a Christian worldview, while partnering with parents to help achieve the best outcomes. It is this partnership that helps achieve the school’s purpose – to glorify God through Christ-centred education that helps children develop their God-given potential. “This unique style of Christian education encourages students to learn solid numeracy and literacy programs alongside life-long behaviours like integrity, honesty, respect, love and truth. “This whole-child focus has seen continued growth in the new campus,

with two streams of prep classes now established.” Heathdale Melton primary continues to grow and is taking enrolments at all primary year levels. An extensive bus network helps parents in getting their children to and from the college – extending to Williams Landing, Tarneit, Truganina, Manor Lakes and Rockbank. Next year, the bus networks will extend to Caroline Springs, Eynesbury

and Melton South. In preparation for class increases next year and in year 7 in 2020, the College has completed internal renovations in its primary classrooms, music auditorium and external play spaces. “This campus has a significant history and we want to honour it as we look forward,” Mr Grace says. “We want to prepare our students for their futures, not

only in the classroom but also through their whole learning environment.” The primary campus will be open for tours for 2019 enrolments from 5.30-7.30pm on Tuesday, March 27. Take care of your kidneys The incidence of renal related disease in Australia is at an all-time high and fast becoming a public health issue of epidemic proportions.

E

very 25 minutes, an Australian dies from a renal related condition, while one in three is at risk of developing a renal disorder at some stage in their lives. In response to this growing public health issue, Djerriwarrh Health Services and The Royal Melbourne Hospital established the Melton Renal Unit in 2007. Now a partnership between Djerriwarrh Health Services and Western Health, the 12-chair renal unit on Barries Road in Melton West operates Monday to Saturday, providing 48 local renal disease patients with haemodialysis treatments, as well as access to registered nurses, sessional nephrologists, Allied Health staff and a patient service assistant. During 10 years’ operation, a total of 44 patients have received kidney transplants. Nursing unit manager Mandy Cullen says the public needs to become more vigilant when it comes to their renal health, as early detection of potential problems can significantly aid treatment. “Unfortunately, many people don’t become aware they are even suffering from renal disease until 80-90 per cent of their renal function has been lost,” Ms Cullen says. “As a result, it is crucial people keep tabs

on the health of their kidneys by requesting a regular check-up.” Local patients living with renal-related diseases are very dependent on the vital services the renal unit provides, and in many cases it’s a lifeline. “As haemodialysis sessions take anywhere from four to five and a half hours, we build and foster strong relationships with the 48 patients we currently provide care for,” Ms Cullen says. Judy was one of the first patients on satellite haemodialysis when Djerriwarrh Health Services opened the unit in 2007. She has attended the unit three days a week for the past 11 years. “Having the unit close by plays a vital role in my independence. It makes such a difference to my quality of life that I don’t have to travel very far to receive quality treatment,” Judy says. “When you have to attend the unit so frequently and for extended periods, you become really thankful that it’s a service your local health provider offers.” For further information on the Melton Renal Unit and guidance with the referral process, contact Djerriwarrh Health Services on 5367 2000 or visit djhs.org.au

Driver expo tops for road worthiness Get your driving in top shape at a free Senior Drivers Expo in Melton. Great for all older drivers, the event will be an ideal opportunity to obtain driving information and tips, once-overs for vehicles from professionals and explanations of new road laws.

O

pen to anyone from Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton and Maribyrnong, the expo is a RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council initiative. RoadSafe Westgate chairman Jim Giddings says his group is committed to supporting older drivers to continue driving on the road longer and to drive safely. “We can all be better drivers with a few simple things, like keeping up with new road laws and making sure our health is as good as can be,” Jim says. “Getting rid of bad driving habits and keeping our cars in good condition are other vital ingredients.” The expo will give senior drivers the chance for a free and confidential one-on-one session with one of the three registered driving instructors – this is designed to identify any “short cut” habits drivers may have adopted. Each expo participant can have a professional, such as a VicRoads roadworthy officer, advise on how to keep cars in roadworthy condition. A VicRoads expert will advise on tyre care, with updates on health, medicine-driver interaction and road rules provided. Attendees will get a free carry bag packed with copies of Senior Drivers Handbook and Driving in Victoria: Rules & Responsibilities. A morning tea and light lunch will be supplied at no cost.

Part of the town’s streetscape since the mid-1990s, the cafe has always been brekkie, lunch and barista-made coffee headquarters, with homemade cakes a specialty and a welcome mat second to none.

and Thai beef and quinoa salads just some of the choices. Finish off with a supershake, choosing from six famous flavours. And what would The Jolly Miller be without its renowned homemade cakes and pastries? Instagram-worthy and delicious, the cakes make quite a splash at birthdays and

other special gatherings. The selection of pastries goes so well with the cafe’s tea blends and exclusive coffee brews. And the chai and matcha lattes, plus smoothies and fresh-squeezed juices, meet the on-trend brief. Businesses, schools and offices take note – the cafes cater for all types of shindigs.

The Melton branch will release its new menu soon. The Jolly Miller, 136 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh; and Shop 1, 265-271 High Street, Melton. Open 7am-5pm daily. Inquiries: 5367 0054 (Bacchus Marsh) and 9747 2337 (Melton).

olly Miller Bacchus Marsh owner Bob Barbar says he’s always loved producing and serving up good food and good times. Bob, who also owns the Melton Jolly Miller, is related to the trio of brothers who co-founded The Jolly Miller concept, with cafes now dotted across Victoria. “I like to treat customers as first-time visitors, with a ready welcome that never wanes with familiarity – even when we know by heart their favourite coffee order and go-to dishes,” Bob says. “We never forgot the supreme importance of our customers – they are who make life in the cafes so rewarding. “Our amazing teams in both cafes also contribute so much to my business. They’re so trustworthy and committed, it makes working with them a joy – and their great attitude spills out to customers. “Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to grow the business the way it has of late.” So what brings customers back and back? It may be the brekkies, prepared fresh from the kitchen. They range through healthy acai bowls and bircher muesli to smashed avo and Mr Big with the lot, while indulgent Nutella hotcakes and French toast banana bread are also hard to go past. Brunch-time hot chocolates, made with Belgian chocolate, are special. Perhaps it’s the lunches, with the likes of nasi goring, grass-fed Angus beef burgers

Taste of Thailand in Melton Thai cuisine has long been one of the most popular in the Australian foodie scene and now Pooki Porntalak and her sister Poppy are bringing their home-style cooking with authentic flavours to Melton. Pooki opened her takeaway cafe a short time ago and she’s loving seeing her customers enjoy food she grew up with.

peanut sauce is a must-have. Salads don’t stop at papaya. There’s larb gai, a salad of minced chicken with ground rice; grilled marinated beef; and a seafood salad – all with lemon and chilli dressing. Three types of soup are also on board. Pooki and Poppy, both qualified chefs, are excited about their new venture. “Most of all we love bringing our culture to people, cooking for them just as we

would for our families,” Pooki says. Right now, get a free 1.25-litre soft drink with every order over $50, and free prawn crackers and peanut sauce with $100-plus orders.

ooki’s cafe and store, Thai Kitchen – on Barries Road – is a simple and welcoming place, with a table and chairs for those who want to eat in, but it’s really designed for dropping in, checking out the menu and taking home a delicious, lovingly cooked meal. Thai Kitchen is also the place to find groceries from Thailand or to grab a quick takeaway coffee. Pooki says her menu has all the Thai favourites, freshly prepared to her own recipes using authentic ingredients. “We have a classic papaya salad, which everyone loves for its freshness and flavours that capture all the Thai herbs and spices in one healthy dish,” Pooki says. “And our massaman curry, always popular, is another dish full of subtle flavours. “Our other curries come in choices of chicken, seafood and beef, with tofu and vegie options for people who want a big punch of flavour without meat. “And, of course, we have our version of pad thai, and a selection of stir fries, fried and wok rice and noodle dishes.” Families will love the choice of appetisers, which can make a fab meal when put together for a smorgasbord, with something for everyone. Chicken (and vegie) spring rolls, curry puffs and wings, as well as Thai calamari, fish cakes and prawn crackers are all here – and roti dipped into

SPORT Thoroughbreds return to competition in the best way It was a winning return to Big V women’s division 2 for Melton Thoroughbreds. Playing their first match in seven years, the Thoroughbreds impressed against Coburg Giants on Saturday night. There were no early nerves for the Thoroughbreds, as they set up the win in the opening half. Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn was thrilled with the 82-64 result in front of a big home crowd. “We’re very, very happy with the first game,” she said. “We went out there with confidence and had a good first half. “Each quarter we wanted to extend the lead further and further and work even harder.

“We need to work on the second half a bit more, but we kept them at arm’s length for the rest of the game.” The Thoroughbreds opened up a nine-point lead in the first quarter and then increased that to 15 points at the main break, with Jenna and Lauren Conroy both prominent. It was a closer second half, but the Thoroughbreds maintained the momentum, winning the half by three points to seal the 82-64 win in front of the home crowd. Co-captain Jenna Conroy starred with 30 points, shooting at 61 per cent from the field. Her sister Lauren hit 17 points and Emily Attard scored 13 points in her Big V debut. Olcorn said the sisters played well together and Jenna led by example.

Olcorn said the win would give the side some confidence that they will be competitive this season. “All the girls were excited to be part of the team and gave it 100 per cent. “Even though we’ve only played one game we’re thinking about other teams. We’re looking forward to pushing for finals.” It was a tough night for the Thoroughbreds men’s side that was easily beaten by the Giants, in the third match of the first-ever triple header at Melton. After an even first quarter, the Thoroughbreds weren’t able to stick with the Giants who outscored the Thoroughbreds 57-31 in the middle two quarters to lead by 29 points at three-quarter time.

The Thoroughbreds outscored the Giants in the last quarter, but still lost 92-69. Skipper Jordan Kirk top-scored with 16 as four of the five starters reached double figures for the new-look side. The Thoroughbreds youth league men’s side had a better weekend, winning both their matches. On Saturday night, they defeated Latrobe City Energy, 116-86 and then backed it up on Sunday, defeating Keysborough Cougars, 69-62. Bol Bak had a good weekend for the Thoroughbreds, scoring 28 points on Saturday night and backed it up with 33 points on Sunday. Tara Murray

Exciting times for Bulls By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh is one win away from a perfect season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Having dominated the regular season, the Bulls weren’t at their best against Romsey in their semi-final, but still did enough to seal a grand final spot. Facing Romsey for a second straight match, the Bulls got off to the perfect start by claiming the key wickets of Chris Burkett and Ben Way before the total reached double figures. At 8-136, it was looking good for the Bulls before they let Romsey back into game. Romsey went on to make 200. Bulls captain-coach Ben Robertson said it was disappointing to allow them to get the extra runs. “I thought 200 was definitely competitive on this ground if you bat all the overs,” he said. “It was runs on the board and a competitive total. “We let them make 200 … we didn’t have the best day with the ball – we were good early on and them let them off the hook. “We bowled short to them and went away from what we’ve done all year. We will learn from it next week.” Madushanka Ekanayaka was the best of the bowlers with three wickets. Robertson said the Bulls, with their long batting line-up, were always confident of getting the runs. Ian Spiteri, who has opened the batting at times this season, was down to come in at No.9. The Bulls didn’t need him, as they got the job done five wickets down, finishing 5-201. James Lidgett top-scored with 76 before being run out, while Alex Porter made 52 not out. Robertson said he was running out of words to describe the role Lidgett has played this season. Lidgett has made five scores of 70-plus, including three in his past four innings. “He finds a way to get the job done,” Roberston said. “This was a little bit of a different innings from him – it was more about occupying the crease.” The side is through to it’s first McIntyre Cup grand final since 2009-10 when they lost to Sunbury United. Its last first XI premiership was in 2007-08. The Bulls will face Woodend, which defeated Riddell in the other semi-final. The Bulls won the only match this season between the two sides. Robertson said there were some pretty excited people around the club. “It will be a challenge for us,” he said. “Last time we played against them, they had a few guys out … it’ll be a totally different game. It is a grand final and we’re excited for it.” James Lidgett appeals for the run out of Mitchell Clement. (Shawn Smits)

Eagles fail to find form Eynesbury put up a brave fight but fell 45 runs short against Wallan in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade semi-final. Entering the final as underdogs against the minor premiers, the Eagles pushed the Magpies for much of the game, before falling short. The Magpies, who have put on some big scores this season, again looked headed for a big total. Kieran Atkin returned to form after a lean period to score his fourth century of the season, as he anchored the innings. The Magpies were all out for 254, leaving the Eagles a job to do. Luke and Hayden Castle took four wickets apiece for the Eagles. The key for the Eagles was their top order as Tristian Francis and the two Castle brothers are all capable of hitting big scores. Francis and fellow opener Jackson Spencer were both out in quick succession leaving the Eagles 2-31. That brought the two Castle brothers together and they put on 103 for the third wicket, before Luke fell for 44. The key moment of the Eagles innings was when they lost three quick wickets to go from 3-171 to 6-174. The third of those wickets was that of skipper Hayden Castle for 88. The Eagles battled on, but were soon all out for 210. Scott Gilchrist took three wickets for the Magpies. Wallan will face St Anthonys in the grand final, pitting the two best sides of the season against each other. Tara Murray 57 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 20, 2018

Lions look on the bright side and to a youthful future Melton’s grand final hopes went down the drain as it was outplayed by Williamstown in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west semi-finals. The regular season’s top two teams met a week earlier than they would have liked, after the Seagulls suffered an upset loss to Plenty Valley the week before. The Seagulls weren’t keen on copping another disappointing result and the Lions paid the price. Lions coach Nathan Geisler said they were outplayed across the two days by a very determined Seagulls side. Batting first, the Lions made 168, with Ben MacRae top-scoring with 53. Brad Jones was the only other batsman to pass 20. It was a score that never looked like being enough. “They had a point to prove after last week,” Geisler said. “We thought if we could scrap to 200-210, it would go a bit longer. And we needed to get early wickets which didn’t happen.”

The Seagulls got through a few overs on day one unscathed and didn’t have much trouble when they resumed on day two. Geisler said the Lions bowled well at times, but the Seagulls batted well, led by Brenton Hodges, who made 79. The Seagulls finished at 4-169. Ash Sweet was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets. Geisler said that despite falling short of a grand final spot, the side had experienced a successful season. The Lions returned to finals for the first time since 2014-15 season. “To lose just three games for the year and [be] one win off a grand final, it has been a good year,” he said. “If you had told us we would have had a home semi-final at the start of the year, we would have been happy. Whilst it’s disappointing [losing the semi-final], we have come a long way. The challenge is to stay a strong contender for the next few years.”

Geisler said the development of some of the younger players had been the most promising thing to come out of the season. “The younger guys have been more consistent,” he said. “Jake Thornton-Gielen and Nathan Taylor with the bat – and Jake Charge has come on with the ball. “Dylan Clarke didn’t have the year he would have liked, but he has had some growth as well. “These guys will be the ones that take the team forward and they’re starting to take the baton from the older guys.” Williamstown will play Kew in the grand final after it beat Plenty Valley. Kew made an imposing 9-323 from its overs, with the Bats compiling 188 in reply. Tara Murray Ben MacRae top-scored for the Lions. (Shawn Smits)

Strikers a hit with eager soccer kids

Saints a triple threat By Tara Murray There will be a few nervous St Anthonys players and supporters this week, as the club has not one but three sides through to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association grand finals. In the matter of a few hours, the club’s top three sides all secured a spot in the final game of the season with semi-final wins on Sunday. Club coach and senior player Cameron Clayton said there was a good feeling around the club, but they were keeping a lid on it. The Saints’ top side made it through to the B-grade decider with a strong win against Ashfield. In windy conditions, the Saints, who entered the game as favourites, looked the better of the two teams for most of the weekend. Ashfield won the toss and elected to bat making 165. It could have been worse if not for a late 50-run partnership. Clayton said on form they were confident 58 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 20, 2018

of getting the runs, but he knew finals were a different ball game. “It was really windy and it was hard to bat and hard to bowl so you really had to concentrate,” he said. “The way we have been batting they were short, but saying that, it’s finals cricket and there’s a lot more pressure.” The Saints started well with the bat and were 0-38 at stumps on day one. Day two didn’t start as well and the Eagles slipped from 0-44 to 4-54. There was no panic and Justin Siedlecki and Paul Scott set about getting back on track. The two stayed at the crease for the rest of the game, as the Saints finished 4-169 to seal victory. Siedlecki finished 76 not out and Scott 35 not out. Siedlecki’s knock was his highest score of the season. The win sets up a grand final showdown with Wallan, which defeated Eynesbury. The

Magpies and Saints have been the best two teams all season, with the Magpies snatching top spot from the Saints in the final round. The final will be played at Greenhill Reserve this weekend. “Wallan is a really good side,” Clayton said. “It’s one game and the best team on the day will get the win. Finals is a different ball game. “Experience will go a long way and if we keep doing what we have been doing, hopefully we’ll come out on top.” The Saints second XI won through to the D-grade grand final, defeating Wallan. The Magpies made 7-270, with the Saints finishing 6-271 with three and a half overs to spare. The Saints will play Malmsbury in the grand final. In E-grade, the Saints defeated Gisborne to seal a grand final spot against Ashfield. Gisborne made 146, before the Saints finished 4-157 from its overs.

Westside Strikers junior soccer program continues to thrive. Based in the growing Caroline Springs area, the number of players interested in playing for the club has increased every year. On Sunday, the club launched the junior year with a gala day, with children from all teams in attendance for their first hit-out of the season. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said they would have 26 junior teams this season, with the children itching to get out onto the park. “It’s great to see so many kids laughing and having a kick,” he said. “It brings back what it’s about.” Raniolo said the Strikers had turned away 100 children because they did not have the ground space. He said they were hopeful they would be able to expand their junior program next season. “We want to get as many players as possible,” he said. “We’ve got teams from under-seven through to under-16s. We’ve got five girls teams, up from four last season.” Raniolo said the club was starting to see success in the junior program flowing through to the rest of the club. This year the Strikers will launch a senior men’s teams. They will field a side in the FFV state league 5 west and will have a reserves side as well. The teams start their season on Saturday against Kensington City. Raniolo said early signs had been positive and the club was hopeful of a good season. “Half of our reserves side are 18-year-olds and some have come through from the under-16s,” he said. “We’ve had five practice matches and won four games. They’re starting to gel together. “Our senior side has done well as well. We’ve played five practice matches and won five. We’re looking forward to the weekend.” Raniolo said a women’s team would be on the cards in the next couple of years to further complement the junior program. “We didn’t have the numbers for a women’s side this year,” he said. “We’ve got an under-16 team and we want to build up that and look at a women’s side again next year.” Tara Murray

Buy into the basics of new car design Choosing a new car is always a challenge … the choices can seem downright overwhelming. But experts who regularly test new cars reckon there are a few must-have features when seeking your new wheels. Here are six to think about: 1. Comfortable seats If seats are uncomfortable, you won’t be happy with your car for long. Make sure you take enough time during a test drive to really take note of comfort – about 15 minutes should tell the story. 2. Powered, height-adjustable lumber support Power seats are far more likely to give the optimum position comfort, with more fine-tuning options provided. If a lumbar bulge is wrongly placed, it’s as bad as having too little lumber support. 3. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) AEB will sense a potential collision and alert drivers via visual and/or audible signals. Car gurus say this should be standard on all vehicles. 4. Blind-spot monitoring The best systems have little lights on side mirrors warning of the presence of another car beside you. They sound a chime if you signal a move towards a car that is next to you. 5. Android connectivity This brings the features and useability of your smartphone to your dashboard. You can use car-friendly apps and voice-activated texting, all the while with eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel. 6. Keyless entry When you’ve got your hands full, this feature is invaluable. Most cars with this have a push-button start, but even if they don’t, keyless entry still makes it easier than fishing around for keys. Carole Levy

MOTOR

Upgraded Prado packs a punch By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring For the 2018 season, Toyota has upgraded its Prado range, with a facelift and tail tuck, a revised interior and additional infotainment and safety technology. Our test vehicle was the LandCruiser Prado topline model, the Kakadu. Not cheap at $84,490 but do you get a substantial amount of vehicle for your money. And the price has been trimmed by $1121 compared to the model it has just superceded. The new grille is big and bold with broad vertical bars flanked by restyled headlamps (bi-LED on GXL, VX and our test Kakadu). The main beams have been positioned slightly further inboard to reduce the chances of damage when off-road driving. At the rear, there are new lamp clusters and a smaller garnish incorporated within the number-plate surround. The bonnet is now sculpted in the centre to enhance downward visibility, which is particularly useful in serious off-road driving. The front guards have been re-profiled and the lower corners of the front and rear bumpers now kick upwards, again to enhance off-road running. Inside, LandCruiser Prado has a redesigned dashboard, instrument binnacle and switches. The centre console now incorporates a flush-surface air-conditioning control panel. The sound system has decent quality and is easy to control through the 8.0-inch touchscreen. It loses FM radio too early for our liking – after all this is a vehicle designed to go big distances and well away from civilisation and it’s nice to have decent entertainment. AM works fine, it’s just that the sound quality isn’t there. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are sadly

Frontal appearance of the upgraded Toyota Prado Kakadu is big and bold. (Supplied)

lacking, but there is Bluetooth connectivity. Ah, well ‌ looks like you will have to sit around the campfire and tell tall tales and do your own singing. All Prados now use the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel as sales of the petrol unit in the previous models were minimal. The diesel has an electronically controlled common-rail direct-injection system that develops 130 kW at just 3400 rpm. There’s 450 Nm of torque between 1600 and 2400 rpm

when sitting in front of a six-speed automatic transmission. When mated to a six-speed manual transmission, only offered on Prado GX or GXL, the engine is tuned slightly differently and develops peak torque of 420 Nm from 1400 to 2600 rpm. Advanced safety features now standard on all LandCruiser Prado automatic models are pre-collision safety system (PCS) with autonomous emergency braking and

pedestrian detection, active cruise control (ACC), lane departure alert and auto high beam. PCS and ACC were previously exclusive to the topline Kakadu. Towing capacity for all automatic models has been increased by 500kg to 3000kg and a rear differential lock has been added to auto GXL and VX grades. The pre-collision safety system can now detect impact risks with pedestrians as well as vehicles. This is a real 4WD so getting in and out can be a bit of a climb/drop for some people due to the high ground clearance. Kids will love it, but grandparents who are getting on in years should be taken along on your pre-purchase test drive. This is a large vehicle that can be a handful in tight carparks, but on the road – and off it – the big Toyota is smooth, quiet and very comfortable. It really does feel almost limo like in that spacious cabin. Engine performance from the turbo-diesel is good without being exciting. There’s no real turbo lag and the fact that the engine is already at its torque peak by 1600 revs means it lopes along with ease, climbs hills without breathing hard and can carry a load of people and luggage without the driver noticing any significant difference. Fuel consumption was in the eight to nine litres per hundred kilometre range on motorways and country cruising. Around town it’s more likely to be in the 10 to 15 litre range depending on traffic and your driving style. Overall the looks of the latest Prado really impress us.

The new Toyota Prado is available at Melton Toyota, 147 High Street, Melton. Phone: 03 8746 0300
