Students left stranded By Esther Lauaki A Bacchus Marsh grandmother is leading a campaign for an additional school bus after a group of students was left behind because their regular bus was full. Overcrowding on the school bus service between Bacchus Marsh and Melton has long been an issue in the area. It came to a head in recent weeks when eight Bacchus Marsh College students were left behind at the school after missing their Melton-bound trip. Avan Waites, whose two grandsons were among the students, said it was not the first

time the students had missed out on the service because it was at capacity. “They are a 12-year-old and 15-year-old left to their own devices on that day because there is no back up bus available when the buses are full,” Ms Waites said. “I also drove two other kids home who would have suffered the same fate. “Most families these days have both parents working … if they cannot rely on the school bus service to deliver their kids to and from school, the whole family will suffer. “A school bus service should be 100 per cent reliable.”

The 3.30pm Melton-bound school bus service, which is funded by Public Transport Victoria and operated by Bacchus Marsh Coaches, picks up students from Bacchus Marsh Grammar before stopping at Bacchus Marsh College and heading on to Melton. Bacchus Marsh Coaches general manager John Storms said that the company was aware of the overcrowding issues on the school route. He said the company was also lobbying PTV in the hope of getting funding for an additional bus. “We have had complaints by some very unhappy parents and unfortunately our hands

are tied on this particular issue,” Mr Storms told Star Weekly. “If we were to send out a bus to pick up students who miss out, it would interfere with a wider network of timetables and we are simply unable to carry the cost.” He encouraged residents to continue campaigning in the hope that PTV would fund another bus. Ms Waites and at least two parents have lodged complaints with PTV and the transport ombudsman. A spokesman for Public Transport Victoria said they are aware of the problem.

Thieves loot Parwan fire station Thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment from the Parwan fire station, leaving the brigade unable to attend the recent bushfires in Victoria’s south-west. The 30-member brigade was unable to go to the aid of firefighters on the front line after being targeted by thieves on March 17. Hoses, breathing apparatus and cylinders, a chainsaw with helmet and chaps, a ride-on mower, torches and portable radios were among the items stolen. Captain Graeme Miles said a police patrol discovered a station door had been “jemmied”.

“We lost a fair bit of equipment,” he said. “I know it will be replaced, but it will take a while. “I received a call early that morning from the regional office saying that the police had been past and the door was up … when I got up there, carnage had been done and everything has been tipped out. Most of our equipment had been taken.” He said that the breathing apparatus alone was worth about $5000. The break-in left volunteers upset and unable to carry out their duties, he said. “We were supposed to get down to Cobden, but with all the mucking around with police we

couldn’t go,” he said. “We had another call-out but we’ve got no breathing apparatus … so if we’ve got a house fire in the area, we’ll have to call another brigade to come and help us.” Captain Miles said it was the third break-in at the station in the past two years. Most of the equipment was covered by insurance. “It happens a fair bit,” he said. “We had CCTV, but it hasn’t been working for a week after a recent power outage. “The radios and breathing apparatus aren’t much use to anyone outside of our line of work, so I don’t know why anyone would want to steal or sell them.”

“Our students have been involving family and friends in their fundraising efforts to go towards school resources. “The money will go towards the school, and it’s one of only a few school fundraising efforts we have that doesn’t go towards a charity so it’s pretty important. “The students have a say in what the money goes towards, but we think it will go towards new technologies for the year 3 to 6s, like iPads or computers.” CUA School Fun Runs helped raise $828,000 for Victorian Schools last year, with more than

With runs ranging from 1.2 kilometres to three kilometres, the day is also about teaching students about a healthy lifestyle and staying active. “The school is getting ready for Active April, so this will be a part of that,” Mr Mallia said. “We want the students to be active both inside school with PE class and school sport, but also outside of school, which is very important.” Ewen McRae

There will be eyes in the sky to keep people in line this duck hunting season. Environment, Land, Water and Planning Department staff will use drones to conduct surveillance during this year’s hunting season which started last week. Drones will hover over wetlands to monitor the behaviour of hunters and protesters alike. DELWP operations manager Glenn Sharp said the vision should help a team of 55 staff respond quickly to illegal activities. “This is a trial to see if this type of surveillance provides increased efficiencies at large-scale events such as duck hunting opening weekend and other recreational activities on public land,” Mr Sharp said. “The drone has the capability to specifically identify people on wetlands from great distances and is unlikely to be seen or heard during flight.” Cameras and infrared technology will be relayed to staff in “real time” Mr Sharp said. “The drone is not expected to disturb any wildlife or hunting activity as it will provide required details in excess of one kilometre away,” he said. “Staff will ensure hunters and protesters behave according to hunting legislation and will be spread across Victoria.” DELWP and police urge hunters and protestors to stick to all the rules this season. Creekside College was a sea of colour last week, when pupils participated in the school’s annual fun run. The Caroline Springs school has been holding the fun run in conjunction with CUA for the past 10 years, last year raising $4000 to put towards school resources. Sports co-ordinator Shane Mallia said the event was a highlight on the school calendar, and students were hoping for another big fundraising effort. “We’re hoping to raise $5000 this year,” Mr Mallia said.

Super posting for Jenny By Esther Lauaki It takes an entire community to tackle crime, Ballarat’s new top cop says. Veteran detective Jenny Wilson started her role as superintendent last week – the first female to fill the position. Based at Ballarat west, she will oversee officers across the Moorabool service area, which takes in more than 120 rural towns stretching from Beaufort to Bacchus Marsh. Ms Wilson, who has served 28 years with Victoria Police, was chosen for the role in January following a competitive selection process. She cut her teeth in Melbourne’s blue collar suburbs and developed an interest in investigating sexual assaults after she headed up a sexual offences and child abuse investigation team in Footscray. Ms Wilson said she was taking a holistic approach to tackling crime. “Our environment has become so complex and it’s just not us alone – we need to work with our partner agencies,” she said. “When I talk about the drivers of crime, I’m talking about family violence, our at-risk youth, our vulnerable people – all these are issues we need to tackle. “I’m conscious that I represent a much broader community than just Ballarat. “My intention in the next few months is to get out and about in those areas. While it might be the headquarters in Ballarat west, I will certainly be going out and working in those towns.” Ballarat’s former superintendent, Andrew Allen stepped down last May to care for his terminally ill wife. He will continue working in the western region in a non-operational position. with The Courier

Creek in line for a makeover Melbourne Water is calling on Melton residents to “reimagine” their creek. A section of Arnolds Creek in Melton West will be revitalised as part of Melbourne Water’s Reimagining Your Creek program. The project involves removing the concrete lining on the channel and replacing it with a healthy waterway and surrounding open space. The Melton community will be encouraged to get involved and provide local knowledge, ideas and suggestions about how the area can be transformed. Melbourne Water major program delivery general manager Eamonn Kelly, said the project was a great opportunity for the community to connect with their local waterway. “This project will transform Arnolds Creek into an area the whole community can enjoy,” he said. “The reimagining of Arnolds Creek project is all about community collaboration. While Melbourne Water will lead the implementation of the project, we want the community to help us create the design.” Community consultation is open for the next six months. Once a design has been completed and feedback received, Melbourne Water anticipates construction will begin in late 2018 and finish by July 2019. War service honoured A 500-metre Walk of Honour in Rockbank will pay tribute to the men and women who have served Australia in wars and conflicts around the world. The walk of honour, which will eventually include a series of plaques featuring profiles and stories from a number of wars, has been completed up to coverage of World War I and World War II. Project leader Peter Burquest said the installation was aimed at educating residents about the people who served in the armed forces. “We want to have the community more aware of where Australia has come from and that Australia has been through a lot,” he said.

Mr Burquest said the Rockbank site on which the project was being developed has special significance. “The site was a radio signals place back in the First World War days,” he said. “It played a great part in the First World War and Second World War operations in the main signal area. “It’s got a pretty significant connection to the military, the war and the campaigns that Australia’s taken part of in the early years.” Mr Burquest said the project’s organisers were endevouring to gather as many local stories as possible for inclusion and were currently looking for people with connections to Korean War veterans. Ghost pub’s bash is pure gold By Esther Lauaki The golden years are far from over for the Blackwood Hotel. The landmark pub’s 150th anniversary coincides with the Australian Heritage Festival on Saturday, May 19, and its owners are inviting the whole town and visitors to help them celebrate. Blackwood, once a bustling gold-rush era town, is known for its sometimes dark history as a regular stop on the Cobb & Co route for people seeking their fortune in gold. The hotel was built in 1868 to serve as the town morgue and became the scene of many inquests over the years. These days spook fans and skeptics attend tours with the hope of catching a glimpse of the hotel’s ghost, its longest-staying resident. Hotel owner Darren Lynch bought the watering hole about three years ago with its “haunted” history in mind. “There’s definitely an energy here,” Mr Lynch said. “I’ve lived in town for many years and bought the place knowing that it had a great deal of history behind it. “While the gold and miners are long gone, the Blackwood Pub and community still remains and is the golden nugget in this quiet, peaceful part of Victoria. “This is not just about the pub, but about the community and the people who make Blackwood special.” For the Blackwood Pub 150 Years Celebration on Saturday, May 19, a street parade will be led by the Carlton and United Brewery draught horses. Other highlights will include kids activities, stalls, music, walks and talks about the gold, the mines, the people and the pub. The free event will run from 11am-5pm. Details: blackwoodpub.com

Ballarat line shut-down Works on the Ballarat train line will mean another weekend shut-down next month as track upgrades continue. Commuters are being encouraged to plan ahead as buses will replace trains from the first service on Saturday, April 28 to the last on Monday, April 30 with normal service to resume on May 1. Regional Rail Revival director Mark Havryluk said that closures were unavoidable. “A project of this size requires careful consideration and planning, and there will be unavoidable changes to services while the Ballarat line upgrade is carried out until late-2019,” he said. “Crews worked around the clock to install safety fencing, relocate signalling and remove vegetation in preparation for track duplication.

“During rail line closures, we undertake critical works along the line that cannot be safely completed while trains are running.” Temporary safety fencing was installed along the tracks at Melton south and Rockbank during the Labour Day weekend which would “significantly reduce the number of times the train line will require closing” throughout construction, he said. Mr Havryluk said when the upgrade was completed trains would have the capacity to run every 40 minutes off-peak. Second platforms would be added at Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Wendouree stations while the platform at Rockbank station would be extended, he said. Esther Lauaki

Helping out for good health Women’s Health West is calling young African women across the west to join a free program that addresses health issues. The week-long Young African Women’s program in Melton is designed for young African women aged between 18-25, who live, work or study in Melbourne’s west. The organisers aim to make women feel safe talking about health issues and enhance their confidence, independence and capacity to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. Women’s Health West chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said delivering the program will help the increasing number of young African women in the community to access health care information and services.

“There is a growing African community in Melton. “The Young African Women’s Program has been designed to make settlement easier for this community, through the provision of culturally-sensitive sexual and reproductive health education for young women,” she said. “The program will enable participants to find out about local services, as well as provide them with the skills and confidence to become future leaders of the community.” The program is supported by the Melton City Council, and will take place at Melton Library and Learning Hub, from April 3-12. What’s brewing at Brookside? Year 8 and 9 students at Brookside College are brewing up their entrepreneur skills. Hands on Learning teacher Seral Fehmi said students who run the But First Coffee cafe have acquired skills that they can’t gain in the classroom. “The program has brought out creativity and lots of entrepreneurial skills in students, she said. “They’re always talking about ways to make the program and business better. “They’re getting a very different learning experience that normally wouldn’t come until later. Ms Fehmi said she wants to see Hands On Learning at every school. “I have seen our students’ confidence really grow, they seem to be more connected to school and it’s broadened their view of themselves. Sena Senbay

Council focus on state of lake By Esther Lauaki Fountain maintenance, plant management and litter collection are high on the list of priorities as Melton council takes measures to improve the condition of Lake Caroline. The review comes after a group of residents raised concerns about the state of the suburb’s centrepiece and formed a committee in an effort to have it returned to its former glory. The group said the main problems included

overgrown weeds, pest control, the fountain which had been turned off for maintenance and stagnant water which produced an odour. Cambridge ward councillor Steve Abboushi last week updated residents on the council’s efforts to address the issues. “Generally the lake conditions and water quality are excellent,” Cr Abboushi posted on Facebook. “Council undertakes comprehensive water quality testing quarterly.

‘‘

Generally the lake conditions and water quality - Steve Abboushi are excellent

’’

“The lake may have a slight smell depending on air temperature and wind direction … there is not a problem of excessive rotting vegetation or algae that may cause excessive odour. “Council will be working … to hone our

strategy for managing and maintaining a healthy waterway for wildlife and residents alike.” He added that water levels were being monitored by council officers as well as City West Water, pest control measures were already in place and litter collection from the lake edge was being undertaken twice a week and daily in some parts. A new fountain pump and motor was installed on March 14 to get it working again.

Fireys need your help The Toolern Vale fire brigade has sounded the call for 10 new recruits to strengthen its numbers. The Country Fire Authority is running a six-week campaign with an information session in May to attract more members. Toolern Vale has 41 members on the books but just 15 trained and active firefighters. Community engagement officer Jared Watson said the brigade was looking for candidates who live in the Toolern Vale community or near it. “We are targeting shift workers or people with day time availability,” Mr Watson said. “We’ve got nights and weekends covered really well. “We’ve got a brigade where we have a mixture of younger and older members but ideally we want more people who can turn out. “This includes people holding truck licences or with an interest to become a driver. “Full training and gear is included and can be used for work outside of the CFA.

“Where else can you learn to drive a truck and get this experience for free?” Both female and males are encouraged to join, he said. “There is a role for everyone at Toolern Vale,” Mr Watson said. “Joining your local fire brigade is like joining a family. It is such a fulfilling experience, it’s unique and worthwhile.” The brigade responds to about 50 incidents per year and when they aren’t firefighting, or responding to incidents members spend time in the community running education programs, fundraising, attending events or doing Santa runs. Information: toolernvalecfa@gmail.com or 0498 757 570. Esther Lauaki CFA volunteers Ally Spence and Jared Watson get some training in. (Marco De Luca)

NEWS

MY PLACE Kirsty Lanzendoerfer and her family kissed Melton goodbye earlier this year to travel Australia in a caravan. She tells Esther Lauaki about life on the road. What is your connection to Melton? My connection to Melton is strong, with most of our family and friends living in Melton.

We set out originally with a budget of $1000 a week. If we were under then, that is great. Most weeks we are. We try to free-camp in the caravan where we can, keeping our accommodation costs down to a minimum and letting us have more money for more important things to enjoy. Life on the road is cheaper then our lives back at home. Having no every day bills helps.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in Melton all my life, so 28 years all up. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about family and, most of all, our three children.

What would people be surprised to know about you? People would be surprised to know that we are just your normal family of five who took the plunge and sold everything to make the Aussie dream a reality.

Tell me about why you decided to pack up your family and travel around the country in a caravan? Life was so busy before we decided to sell up and pack the family into a caravan and travel. The main reason was to get out of the daily nine-to-five grind and to be able to watch our children grow and give them amazing life experiences. Plus – you only live once.

(Supplied)

How long have you been on the road? This week, it will have been three months since hitting the road. In the past three months we have travelled almost 10,000 kilometres. We have travelled along the coast, to some amazing places all through South Australia exploring the peninsula there. We have been through the Nullarbor, up to Kalgoorlie, then seen the amazing coastline in Western Australia. Lucky Bay in Esperance has been the pick for us so far. Kangaroos on the beach with squeaky white sand! We are currently in Margaret River for the next couple of weeks.

What do you miss most about living in Melton? Definitely all our family and friends – not having those friendly places to pop in for a cuppa whenever we want.

KIRSTY WITH SON BODHI

How is life different now that you are travelling? Life has drastically changed. Being on the road has taught us all to be patient with each other. We are so relaxed and carefree. Absolutely loving life on the road with the kids. What do you hope that your children will gain from the experience?

Whilst travelling we hope the three kids experience life-long memories with not only each other but people they meet while on the road – as well as the life experiences they are getting without even knowing it. What costs are involved in travelling in this way? The costs of travelling vary from week to week.

What’s the biggest challenge about travelling around the country in a caravan? Not the fact we live under each others noses 24 hours a day, seven days a week, like most people may think, but would have to be, funnily enough, picking our next destination! There are so many beautiful places in this amazing country and 12 months just isn’t enough time to get around to all of them. So we have had many late nights trying to work out our next stop! Follow Kirsty and her family’s journey on Facebook and Instagram @tribeofive.

SPORT Thoroughbreds fall short after final quarter fade-out A last quarter fade-out proved costly for Melton Thoroughbreds on Sunday in Big V men’s division 2. Looking for their first win of the season, the Thoroughbreds looked to have Mildura Heat’s measure for much of the game. It was an even first quarter, before the Thoroughbreds opened up a seven point lead at the main break. They extended that to 11 points at three quarter-time with the game in their hands. The Thoroughbreds started the last quarter slowly and the Heat pounced – the margin quickly evaporated with the Heat hitting the front with just under three minutes remaining. The Thoroughbreds briefly regained the lead, but once the Heat hit the front for the second time in the last quarter they stayed there. A 29-16 final quarter proved to be the difference with the Heat winning, 96-94. Thoroughbreds import Dexter Graham top

scored with 31 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists – just falling short of a triple-double. Skipper Jordan Kirk had 16 points, while Rody Spoormakers scored 14 points coming off the bench, Meanwhile, it was a tough night on Saturday for the womens side against Craigieburn Eagles. The Thoroughbreds were held to just two points in the first quarter in a poor start that proved costly. While they managed to win the middle two quarters by one point, they were still behind the eight ball. The Eagles finished the match off the better of the two sides, winning 64-46. Emily Attard and Molly Young scored 10 points apiece for the Thoroughbreds. It was better news for the Thoroughbreds youth league side, which remains undefeated after three matches. The Thoroughbreds needed until overtime to break the Western Port Steelers.

The two teams traded the lead throughout the match, with scores 92 apiece at the end of regular time. The Thoroughbreds found another gear in overtime, scoring 16-7 to seal the 108-99 win. Bol Bak continued his good start to the season with 38 points and 14 rebounds in nearly 43 minutes on court. Fernando Rios-Rodriguez was also important in the win, scoring 26 points. In round 3, the men face Southern Peninsula Sharks at Hillview Stadium, while the women travel to Mornington Breakers. The youth league men face another double header, playing Whittlesea Pacers and Frankston Blues. Tara Murray Melton’s Matthew Camilleri goes up to the ring. (Shawn Smits)

AFLW

Former Melton Centrals player Nicky Callinan is an AFLW premiership player. The Western Bulldogs vice-captain was part of the Bulldogs team which claimed the second AFLW premiership on Saturday. The Bulldogs defeated the Brisbane Lions, 4.3 (27)-3.3 (21). For more coverage on the grand final, go to www.starweekly.com.au/sports

By Tara Murray It was grand final heartache for St Anthonys against Wallan in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade. Both teams had been the best two sides all season, so the decider promised to be a classic match, but the Magpies stepped up a level when it counted to claim premiership glory. Day one was abandoned due to heavy rain, with Saints captain-coach Cameron Clayton saying you could have swam on the ground. The weather gods shone brighter on day two and play started at the scheduled time. Both sides have been high-scoring teams throughout the season, and it could have been a hit out, but the Saints restricted the Magpies to 199. “We bowled really well against a good side,” Clayton said. “They could have batted for two days, but we bowled the best we had all year. “We just couldn’t get the job done with the bat.” Kieran Atkin top scored for the Magpies making 50. Things looked good early in the Saints innings as they were cruising at 1-50 with still more than a day to go. That’s when things started to go wrong and the Saints collapsed, losing 9-21 to be all out for 71. Clayton said they just couldn’t do anything right with the bat and were made to pay. “We would have rather lost to them than a side below us.” Scott Gilchrist and Brenton Hanson took five wickets apiece for the Magpies, as they needed just two bowlers to get the job done. The win earns the Magpies promotion to the McIntyre Cup for next season. They’ll play in that division for the first time since 2014-15. For the Saints, it’s a second grand final loss in three years, after coming close in 2015-16. Despite the loss, Clayton said it would be a season of positives with the club going from strength to strength on and off the field. He said the vibe around the club had been the best it had been during his time there. “Last year we finished second last and were the laughing stock of the competition,” Clayton said. “To finish where we did, we’re very proud. “It’s the first time since 2012-13 we’ve had three sides in the grand final. “There’s been massive improvement from the group and the club overall.” It wasn’t all bad news for the Saints on Sunday, with their third XI winning the E-grade premiership, defeating Ashfield. The club’s second XI side is hoping to add a

Western Jets got their season off to a perfect start defeating Calder Cannons in the opening round of the TAC Cup. Scores were level at quarter-time, before the Jets opened up a 20-point lead at half-time. They led by 15 points at the final break, managing to hold on in the last quarter to win, 12.9 (81)-12.5 (77).

The Essendon District Football League season will get under way on Good Friday. Keilor will host Strathmore in their traditional premier division clash, while local division 1 rivals Hillside and Taylors Lakes will do battle. Hillside will host the division 1 clashes, with the seniors starting at 2.15pm.

AFL Goldfields

Nine clubs will field teams in the second season of the AFL Goldfields women’s competition. The competition, which will be just one division this year, includes, Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Gisborne and Melton Centrals, along with five Ballarat-based sides. In the Riddell District Football League youth girls competition, Bacchus Marsh, Darley, two Gisborne teams, Melton Centrals, Sunbury Kangaroos and Diggers Rest will field sides.

TAC Cup girls

Western Jets remain without a win after three rounds of the TAC Cup girls competition. Playing the Calder Cannons on Sunday, both teams were looking for their first win of the season. The Cannons scored the only two goals of the second half, to win 4.1 (25)-2.1 (13).

second premiership to the cabinet on Saturday. They made 9-378 against Malmsbury in the D-grade grand final.

“We’ll go up there as a club next weekend and support the seconds and hope they get over the line,” Clayton said.

Stallions settle for a draw in difficult conditions Spring Hills came away with one point in tricky conditions in the opening round of the FFV state league 4 west season. The Stallions and Balmoral faced off under lights and had to deal with rain and thunder and lightning in the background. The Stallions came from behind in the second half, to seal a 2-2 draw. Stallions team manager Joe Febbraio said they were happy to come away with the draw. “It was a tough game, it always is when you play Balmoral,” he said. “The rain was coming down hard for part of the game. We had majority of the possession, 60 to 70 per cent of the time, but didn’t have

that killer instinct in the front half. Their first goal was quite scrappy, before the second one our goalkeeper couldn’t hold onto the slippery ball. “We pushed hard to get the equaliser and got it with 15 minutes to go.” Charlie Nash and Jarrod Febbraio were the goalscorers for the Stallions. Febbraio said they would take a lot of positives out of the game, their first game back up in state league 4. “There are a lot of positives and some areas to do some work on,” he said. “We know it is a step up and we go in with our eyes wide open. Every game we will have a fight on our hands to

get every point and win.” Febbraio said they entered the season on the back of a strong pre-season, including good performances against higher ranked teams. The Stallions defeated Sunbury United in the FFA Cup, before falling in extra time against Whitehorse United. “We played a practice match against Williamstown and the first 45 minutes we played really well. “We then changed things around a bit to give some extra time to some guys. We lost 4-2 but we weren’t unhappy with how we played. “Overall we’re happy with the pre-season, the positives outweighed the negatives.”

Spring Hills reserves lost to Balmoral 5-2. The Stallions have this week off for the Easter bye, before facing Newmarket in round two. It wasn’t an ideal start for Melton Phoenix in state league 5 west, going down to Gisborne 7-1. Gisborne scored three times in the first 12 minutes to set up the win and the Phoenix never recovered. Westside Strikers have had to wait another week to make their state league 5 west debut. The Strikers were due to face Kensington on Saturday, but with their ground not ready, the match was postponed to this weekend. Tara Murray

Bacchus Marsh takes the title By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh’s premiership victory in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup will take a little bit of time to sink in. The best side throughout the season, going through undefeated, the Bulls faced their greatest challenge of the season at the weekend against Woodend in the grand final. For most of the game Woodend looked to be the likely winner, having bowled well and started its innings well. But cricket can be a funny game and the Bulls came from nowhere to claim the win in remarkable fashion. Bulls captain-coach Ben Robertson was in shock after the game. “It’s unbelievable and pretty special,” he said. “It was one of those days … cricket is a crazy game.” The players had to wait a day for the grand final to get under way, with day one abandoned due to the rain and ground being too wet. The Bulls then won the toss and elected to bat. They were bowled out for just 115, their lowest total of the season, and this was despite Woodend gun bowler Peter Manser going down with a hamstring injury in his eighth over. Only Madushanka Ekanayaka, coming in at number nine, looked comfortable at the crease for the Bulls as he top scored with 26. Just four batsmen reached double figures in the innings, as they were bowled out in the 51st over. Robertson said they couldn’t have played any worse than they did in that innings. “The first 20-25 overs the balls didn’t swing a great deal and then after 30-35 overs, the ball was unplayable. “Eka could be batting in the top four for us, we’ve got such a long batting line-up. “He proved valuable and was hitting balls cleanly when everyone else was struggling. “After losing the ninth wicket he went for one too many.” Despite the below average total the Bulls didn’t give up hope and backed the form that had got them to that stage. With Woodend 3-80 and needing just 36 runs with seven wickets and more than a day in hand, the Bulls positivity was tested. But like in their innings, the ball started to swing and with the best bowler in the competition, Ekanayaka, in their side, things turned their way. “We tried to stay positive and keep believing that we could win,” Robertson said. “We got a bit of a run-on and kept going. “Eka and Jared Taylor got the ball swinging. “In those conditions when the ball started to swing and it was starting to get dark towards the end of the day, with Eka bowling straight at the stumps, it was hard to bat.” The Bulls claimed 7-14, to bowl Woodend out for 94 and seal the premiership win. Ekanayaka was named man of the match for his 26 and then 4-26 off 17 overs. He could quite easily take home the Sullivan Medal for the competition’s best player in a couple of weeks time, having taken 59 wickets

for the season at an average of 9.02 per wicket. It comes after he took 44 wickets in his first season. Ekanayaka said he was proud to win the man of the match award. He said they never gave up on winning the grand final. “I’m very proud, it’s six months of hard

work,” he said. “Everyone has supported me and helped me get 59 wickets. “We are the champions and I love Bacchus Marsh. I want to come back every year.” Robertson said the premiership, which is the club’s first top grade premiership since 2007-08,

was reward for all the hard work that everyone has put in. He said the depth of the playing group had always been crucial in getting them to where they are. “It means everything to the club and a lot of past players and committee people have put a lot of work in for us,” he said. “The work they do to give us the ability to play every week isn’t always noticed, but we notice it. “There were a couple of guys pushing for McIntyre and were unlucky to miss out. “Hopefully their time will come next season.” The premiership still feels like a dream for the first year captain-coach, who returned to the club this season. It’s a long way from his initial expectations for the season. “When I signed I didn’t have James [Lidgett] and I didn’t know how many games I’d get out of Dennis,” he said. “I didn’t know what sort of squad I’d have and it was about making sure we didn’t get relegated. “In the space of a week I had myself, James and Dennis all committed. Without us three, we would have been a middle of the road side. “To go through undefeated and win the McIntyre Cup is incredible.” 41 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 27, 2018
