May marks 100 years There’s a letter from the Queen coming for May Cowman. The long-time Melton resident will be 100 next Friday and says she would prefer to her keep her birthday low key – but everyone who loves her would rather shower her with love. May was born on April 13, 1918 in Shepparton and moved to Melbourne when she married her childhood sweetheart Keith at 19. The couple settled in Pascoe Vale and later moved to Melton. She says they led a very private life. “We were fortunate to have lifelong friends ... wherever we set up home, but we were very private and kept to ourselves,” May said. May lost her husband, who was also a centenarian, after 78 years of marriage in 2015. Her son Barrie visits her at Willowbrae-Melton Aged Care every day and describes his mum and “an absolute darling”. Mr Cowman puts his mum’s longevity down to her love of word searches. “It keeps her mind sharp,” he said. “I’ve been running out of books for mum so I’ve been printing pages and pages of word searches from the internet for her … it doesn’t matter what time of day you visit … she’s always got one.” Esther Lauaki

Melton’s sporting budget By Esther Lauaki Melton council is planning to spend nearly $80 million on infrastructure and sports projects, according to its 2018-2019 draft budget. The draft, which is out for public feedback until April 27, reveals that rate increases are proposed to be capped at 2.25 per cent, in line with the state-government imposed cap, with council expecting to collect about $134 million from rates in the next financial year. Among the big-ticket items are $25 million
for recreational facilities, including $700,000 for a female changeroom upgrade program; $2.9 million on the design and construction of sports ovals, tennis and netball courts and a pavilion at Fraser Rise; and $2.7 million on the completion of the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre redevelopment and construction of a sub-regional tennis facility. Another $17 million has been earmarked for roads. The most significant of those include $915,000 for the duplication of Hume Drive, $4.78 million for the Westwood Drive bridge, $3.151 million towards pedestrian level
crossing upgrades at Hopkins, Troups, Leakes, Paynes, Mt Cottrell and Ferris roads, and $2.23 million on a sealed road resurfacing program. Public art projects are expected to cost $90,000 and $450,000 has been set aside for installation of lighting around Lake Caroline and surrounds. Melton’s rugby union and league clubs are in for a big win if a $5.9 million redevelopment of their home grounds at Macpherson Park Regional Reserve gets the nod. Mayor Bob Turner said the draft budget demonstrated the council’s commitment

to community priorities and high-quality programs, services and infrastructure. He thanked the residents who attended community engagement sessions last year, saying their insights had been used to prepare a budget that is “fair, equitable and strives to ensure the timely delivery of infrastructure, programs and services for our community”. The draft budget projects a surplus of $9 million after adjusting for capital grants, developer contributions and gifted assets. View the draft budget online at melton.vic. gov.au/budget1819

Rain puts courts out of action By Esther Lauaki New indoor recreational basketball courts can’t come soon enough for Melton Basketball Association and parents who are fed up with the lack of usable courts. A leaking roof and damaged courts at Melton Recreation Centre threatened the cancellation of junior grand final games during a downpour on March 25. Games were rescheduled but parents have renewed calls for Melton council to fast-track plans for a new stadium which is still at least three years away from construction.
Christy Taylor, who was at the final, said an interim solution needs to be found fast. “This is an indoor sport yet we are unable to play when it rains,” Ms Taylor told Star Weekly. “The facilities at the recreation centre are appalling and one court has already been deemed unsafe due to leaking/water damage. “The council has put plans in place for a new stadium but we are looking at three years away.” Basketball games are scheduled over three courts at Melton Recreation Centre and two courts at Heathdale Christian College. “These issues will continue for the next three
years while waiting for new functioning, safe courts for our youth,” Ms Taylor said. A Basketball Victoria report released last year emphasised the need for more courts. “Plans are in place to expand the Caroline Springs Stadium by three courts to a six-court facility, with the state government recently committing $2.5 million to the project,” the report stated. “There will be a shortfall of six courts across the city by 2022. “The widespread nature of the major growth areas would indicate that these courts would be best achieved through development of up to
three centres across the municipality. “Land has been set aside in the Toolern Precinct Structure Plan for … the Melton South/Toolern Indoor Sports Centre.” Council’s recreation and youth manager Troy Scoble said council was “planning for the future of indoor ball sports”. “Council has now resolved that the Toolern Precinct is to be the site of a new five court high ball indoor court stadium,” Mr Scoble said. The council is currently building two basketball courts at the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre.

Get into shape for school holidays Kids will be thinking inside the box these school holidays if they take part in a Melton interactive art installation. The Shape of Things, on now at Woodgrove shopping centre, is a pop-up activity created inside a shipping container. Centre manager Kylie Robertson said the installation encourages the community to
reimagine the space around them. “We are so excited to offer this experience to our community,” Ms Robertson said. “The interactive three-dimensional environment will provide a fun immersive experience for our families.” The progressive art piece will start as a blank canvas, with living room furniture, and walls
painted white which children will then apply colourful shape stickers all over. Gold coin donations will be collected and go to Hope Street for youth homelessness. The Container Pop Up Activity will run until April 15 from 10am to 2pm. Esther Lauaki
The Men’s Shed movement in Melton could be about to meet its match – a Women’s Shed. A Melton and Brimbank men’s program was set up in 2012 as an informal setting to advise and improve men’s overall health. Sheds already operate in Taylors Hill and Melton and Cambridge councillor Goran Kesic last week requested that the council explore different locations to establish a Women’s Shed in Caroline Springs or nearby. “This does not necessarily mean finding a place where we’re going to erect a building, it is rather to find a warm space, especially with winter coming, for the Melton and Caroline Springs artists made up of 40 women and a few men,” Cr Kesic told last Monday’s meeting. “These women are mothers, sisters, accountants, librarians, professionals and artists. At the moment they share their materials and resources and they open their homes for people to come take part in activities. “I think exploring a space for them to use is a small step in the right direction.” Cr Lara Carli said there might be possible sites in Diggers Rest or Rockbank that could also be explored for a Women’s Shed while Cr Sophie Ramsey questioned what the program would involve. “What does a Women’s Shed imply?” Cr Ramsey said. “Is it just four walls or does it include some art easels or some sewing machines … we need some consultation around this.” Esther Lauaki

JACK BRISCOE
Jack is king of his trade Jack Briscoe is in his element tinkering in a garage – whether it be with a motorbike or a mower. The Bacchus Marsh mower mechanic was recently named Apprentice of the Year in the outdoor division at Kangan Institute’s apprentice and industry awards. “It was very surprising when I won the award,” he said. “I’m really proud of myself – it means I’m a really good mechanic and good at what I do.” He’s in his final year of a four-year apprenticeship, servicing outdoor tools and equipment. “I’ve been fixing lawn mowers and outdoor tools since I was about five,” the 20-year-old
said. “My dad loved to show me a few things here and there and I just really liked fixing things.” Bacchus Marsh Mowers co-owner Sarah McDonald said Jack was talented beyond his years. “We’re extremely proud of him,” Ms McDonald said. “We all knew he was a star and this award confirms it. He’s really kind and helpful and brilliant at his job. “He’s pretty handy and there’s probably more to learn this year, but he’s very advanced.” Jack said he wanted to carry on in the field after he completes his apprenticeship. Moorabool council is seeking feedback on a Local Area Traffic Management study of an area in Bacchus Marsh. The study will focus on traffic, parking and safety issues in the area bounded by the Western Freeway to the north, Main Street/Bacchus Marsh Road to the south and the Lerderderg River to the east. A direct mailout has been sent to those in the study area, but council is also seeking input from non-residents who use the roads. Information: www. moorabool.vic.gov.au/consultations

Hoops hopes on the rise By Esther Lauaki If determination and work ethic have anything to do with it, Alieu Chol will be taking his Melton-honed basketball talent to the world. The 19-year-old has aspirations to study abroad and dreams of playing college basketball in the US, but says fees of $28,000 could be his biggest obstacle. Standing at 198 centimetres, Chol’s skills on court have caught the attention of Pennsylvania State University, McDaniel College in Maryland and a number of other institutions. “I’ve been playing basketball since 2012,” Chol said. “I started playing soccer when I was six to the age of 14, but I changed codes because of my height. “As a kid I would watch basketball and I always loved it. I look up to my brother Yuat, who is playing college basketball for Texas Christian University in America right now.” Chol knows that chasing dreams takes hard work and dedication, so he worked three jobs last year to save and help support his family. “Last year I worked at McDonalds, KFC and Tabcorp Park but it interfered with my studies, so I now work at Caltex and save money,” he said. “My mum is a single mum and doesn’t speak much English … she raises my younger siblings. I’m working my butt off now.” Chol has played for the Sunshine Longhorns and Western Pride in Footscray and has been selected for the Melton under-21 representative team. “I’m trying to do well there so that I get seen,” Chol said. He’s looking for sponsorship to help get him to America. Anyone interested can contact mikeool782@gmail.com

Free vaccine for teenagers More teens across the western suburbs will be better protected against meningococcal with the extension of a free vaccination program. The statewide meningococcal vaccination program for Year 10 students is available until December 31. There were 27 meningococcal cases diagnosed over the past 12 months in the Northern and Western Metropolitan region, which covers Melton and Moorabool. The state’s deputy health chief Dr Brett Sutton said that the majority of these cases had contracted the previously rare ‘W’ and ‘Y’ strains of the meningococcal disease. “The meningococcal ACWY vaccine safely protects against four strains of meningococcal disease, the increasingly common ‘W’ and ‘Y’ strains as well as the ‘A’ and ‘C’ strains,” Dr Sutton said. “Ensuring eligible young people are vaccinated is essential in protecting the wider community from this deadly disease.” Acting health minister Martin Foley the program would enable families to feel confident in the health and safety of their children. The free program is available at scheduled school immunisation sessions, local council community immunisation sessions and from GPs. Esther Lauaki

Residents object to mosque By Esther Lauaki
Story of a life well lived Clara Franklin didn’t speak a word of English when she arrived in Australia more than 50 years ago – so she promised herself to learn one new word each day. The 82 year-old Melton resident has now written four books – the latest two to be released in coming months. Franklin’s work is partially inspired by her life and stories from people she’s met. She realised her dream to become a writer with the release of Angel Wings, based on her survival in Poland through World War II, her separation from her family and their reunion in Australia. “Many of my books are based on true events,” she said. When Franklin arrived in Australia in 1963 she was fluent in Polish, German, Russian and Czech but not English, which meant she was unable to secure work as a trained midwife. She said she became a published author after the death of her husband. This year, she will release Ottavia’s Story online, about a woman who spent time in a concentration camp during World War II, and Story of One But Many, a series of stories discussing family violence and child abuse. “I wanted to tell people who are scared to speak up, sometimes the end can be good,” Franklin said.

More than a 130 objections have been received by Melton council against the renewal of a planning permit for a mosque in Melton South. Plans for a mosque at 171-197 Harkness Road have been at the centre of controversy for a number of years, sparking violent clashes between police and protesters in 2015. A planning permit for the mosque, which was never acted on, expired last year and a new application submitted – but it has yet to go before the council. Objectors are holding an information meeting on April 3 at the Harkness Road site to discuss their concerns which include hours of operation, traffic, noise and visual impacts. Council’s planning services manager Bob Baggio said the notice period for the most recent permit application finished last month. “To date, 137 objections have been received, and council will consider the application – and social impacts – at a future meeting,” Mr Baggio said. “Notice of the application has recently been completed, with council taking care to notify surrounding landowners and occupiers, as well as displaying a planning notice at the site, and on council’s website. “The landowners have lodged a new planning application for a Place of Worship, with the specification that no more than 60 people will be present at the site, at any one time.” Objector Ralf Schumann of the Australian Liberty Alliance is calling for more consultation about the application and an extended notice period. “For this 100,000 square metre Islamic project, council merely put up a small sign at the property fence and supposedly gave notification to the most immediate neighbours,” he said.

Police want your bikes By Esther Lauaki Caroline Springs police are calling on residents to donate old bikes for its Fix the Cycle program. People serving community-based orders involved in the program breathe new life back into old bikes which are then donated to underprivileged families. Officer in charge Sergeant Robin Dampier said the drive started as a co-operation between the department of justice and Victoria Police to reuse bikes that had been handed in to them and not claimed. “This is a program that’s been running for several years across Sunshine, Keilor Downs, Caroline Springs and Melton police divisions,” Sergeant Dampier said. “We also accept bikes from Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury and a number of other service areas.” He said the initiative benefited all involved. “People who are doing community-based orders refurbish the bikes on the weekends by restoring them, painting them and fixing them up and then we donate them to sections of the community with underprivileged families. “Those restoring the bikes are usually people who have got some mechanical expertise and they love it. “It ends up being a win-win situation because the bikes get a second life, rather than mouldering away in the garage and being thrown out. It also gives the offenders in the justice system something productive to do.” Sergeant Dampier would like more donations saying “the more bikes the merrier”. “We’d like bikes in a whole range of sizes … most often we receive little ones that children have grown out of but we accept all sorts of bikes,” he said. Details, contact Caroline Springs police on 9361 4700.

New police buses ready Police will be able to test more motorists more often as a fleet of 10 new alcohol and drug testing buses are set to hit the streets. The first of the new vehicles is already operational. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said the state-of-the-art design improves the police’s ability to tests motorists anywhere, anytime. “The new buses have been designed with enhanced safety measures to keep our members safe and include LED flood lighting technology, one-step entry with an internal flat floor, front and rear storage areas for equipment and state-of-the-art electronic control systems,” he said. Assistant Commissioner Fryer said the impact impaired drivers had on the road toll in 2017 was significant. “Sadly last year of the 166 drivers or riders who lost their lives on the road, 56 were either over the alcohol limit, had drugs in their system or both. “Twenty one were over the limit, 27 were found to have drugs in their system and a further eight drivers/riders were both over the limit and impaired by drugs. “To think 34 per cent of people who lost their lives on the road, and who were in charge of their vehicles, actually chose to get behind the wheel impaired is shocking.”

The kitchen, with chocolate lower cupboards and pearl-grey uppers, has stone-look laminate benches, industrial-style pendants above the brekkie bench, mosaic splashback tiles, European dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop, plus a walk-in pantry with access to the drive-through double garage. A large Colorbond pergola above sealed aggregate provides outstanding entertainment/relaxation space. It has a built-in day bed and wooden seating, and a deck open to the sun adjoins. A rendered

wall and laser-cut feature provide a snazzy backdrop to the whole set-up and a fence secures it from the backyard. Lush lawn forms the backyard, which has shrubs screening the fence, wooden planter boxes containing bamboo, plus a cute cubbyhouse. A garden shed is tucked away in its own fenced and pebbled area. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, a split-system, alarm, video intercom, 2.7-metre ceilings and downlights throughout are finishing touches to a property with much to recommend. Carole Levy

What’s in store for the 2018 property market?
which would have a measurable impact on household mortgage payments, according to ME Bank head of loans Patrick Nolan. “[Higher RBA rates] mean repayments will also increase, typically $50 for every 25 basis point rise on a $400,000 loan,” Mr Nolan said. But even if that doesn’t happen, borrowers should prepare themselves for higher mortgage rates. 2. Property prices will continue to cool Melbourne’s growth has noticeably slowed towards the end of the year – experts predict these trends will continue in 2018. “Banking regulators want to see a slowdown in house price growth, and that’s what we expect in 2018,” Mr Nolan said.

3. First-home buyers will make a comeback “With investors taking a step back, first-home buyers will find more opportunities in 2018,” Mr Nolan said. “They will continue to benefit from competitive interest rates, new concessions (if eligible) and ample apartment stock, although checks should always be made to ensure quality buys.”
It’s the question on the lips of Australia’s property punters, home owners and wannabe buyers: what will the property market do in 2018? Chris Kohler from Domain reports. It’s now clear that 2017 will go down as the year that saw some of Australia’s hottest property markets switch gear following
a five-year streak that saw Melbourne’s median house price pile on more than $352,000. Explosive house price gains slowed to a trickle in Melbourne in response to new policies designed to safeguard some of the cornerstones of the economy – property prices and debt levels. Several trends will present themselves in
the year ahead as these regulations filter through banks, buyers and markets – here are four of them. 1. Mortgage rates are expected to keep rising Financial markets predict the Reserve Bank will lift the official cash rate off the record low 1.5 per cent level late in 2018,
4.Upgraders will stay put, opting to renovate Eye-watering stamp duty taxes on property transfers act as an anchor, pinning Australians to their current home. As the stamp duty due on a median-priced house in Melbourne hovers around $50,000, home owners increasingly opt to stay where they are and renovate. “We’ve seen a substantial increase in renovation loan applications in 2017, a trend that we’re likely to see well into 2018, as households chose to renovate over moving,” Mr Nolan said.

27 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2018
FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir uncovers an Italian masterpiece The Harley & Rose dining room has a cosy, almost clubbish, vibe about it. The place appears to have already earned places in the hearts of many, including West Footscray’s young family demographic. And, yes, there is a kids menu. The Team CTS of four on hand can rise to the occasion of three-hour-plus meals. But mostly we’re very much of the “bring us food and make it snappy school. So we really appreciate the terrific service and the beautifully paced arrival of our various choices. It could be said that Harley & Rose serves mostly orthodox Italian – but that would be misleading. For instead of bolognese or veal scaloppine or minestrone, there are wonderful surprises at almost every turn. We share four starters. Salami ($12), with caper berries on the side, has just the right perfume level of fennel. Our other choices mostly display exactly the same levels of light and right. They include Noix de Jambon with fresh fig ($15) and smoked ocean trout, Grand Marnier and horseradish ($16). Though the crunchy/gooey gorgonzola dolce croquettes with quince ketchup ($9) certainly up the richness factor quite a bit. For mains, for us, two pasta offerings and two pizzas. Spaghetti cacio e pepe ($19) is profoundly simple, sinfully rich perfection – just pasta,
HARLEY & ROSE Address: 572 Barkly Street, West Footscray Phone: 8320 0325 cheese, pepper and not much else. From the short specials line-up, Bennie chooses rigatoni with a sticky tomato sauce including fermented chilli and pancetta ($18). Loves it, he does, though its consumption concludes with a familiar refrain from him: “Wow – that was bigger than it looked! If anything, perhaps our super dooper pizzas are the real high points of our eating evening. Neapolitan ($20) with sweet pepper, tomato, anchovy, olives and oregano and and house sausage ($22) with pork sausage, fennel, tomato, eggplant and pecorino both exhibit great flavours. Desserts? Oh, yes, we’re definitely in that sort of mood. Tiramisu ($14) is a straight-up top-shelf rendition of a classic. Meringue with pink pepper melon and apple granita ($12) is amazing. The blending of the poached meringue (a bit like a gooey marshmallow) with the cool pink cubes, crunchy granita and the all-important mint equals a taste explosion.
Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Rams hope recruiting spree will achieve new goals Rockbank is looking to take the lessons learned from last year’s Riddell District Netball League season and make inroads this year. For most in the Rams netball program, last season was their first in the RDNL, and overall the club didn’t get the results it was after. Rams’ coach Lizzy Masterson said they had worked really hard in this pre-season to close the gap between them and the top sides. “We’ve done a fair bit of recruitment,” she said. “I believe we have four strong teams. “We’ve entered a local competition before Christmas and we hope to hit the ground running. All the players are playing in that competition. “We train twice a week and a lot couldn’t
train on Tuesday nights, so we made playing on Wednesday nights compulsory.” Masterson said there was one key area they looked to address in their A-grade side, which was adding another shooter. “The A-grade side is pretty much last year’s squad. We’ve included a strong goaler and a wing attack. “We came into the competition without a steady goal shooter. “Jess did a great job, but we couldn’t get the connections to work. “We’ve now got a strong goaler like other teams. The selectors have given me four good goalers, five defenders and a few midcourters.” The two recruits have impressed in the practice
matches. Rebecca Hicks has given the Rams some more scoring power, while Olivia-Kate Burrow is smashing it in wing attack. Ciara Elliott, who was part of the under-19 team, has stepped up as well. Masterson said they had also added some new players to their B-grade team. She said they were excited by the under-19 side. Last season was the first time a Rams under-19s team made finals. “We’ve brought in another goaler, midcourter and defender. The unders have been training well and setting high standards.” Masterson said once the season started they were confident they would be more competitive
Young star on the rise By Tara Murray Melton’s Broden Collins was keen to be a part of the Victorian Country under-18 basketball team this year. As a bottom-age player last year he trained with the side in the lead-up to the national championship and was named as an emergency. “It was a really great experience and gave me a lot of motivation to be part of the side this year,” he said. “Having the experience with the older kids last season was good and it helped with my development. “I’ve kept working hard and kept working on my craft and the skills I have.” The hard work has paid off. Collins has been named in the state team which will compete at the Australian Junior Championships to be held in Geelong later this month. The power forward and centre player, said he was looking forward to the challenge ahead. Last year, the Victoria Country team which included former Melton junior Liam Allison, finished seventh. “It’ll be tough competition and there will be some great talent,” Collins said. “Hopefully we can get to a high position and I can go out and help the team in any way I can.” The year 11 student at Catholic Regional College in Melton spends a lot of time on the basketball court, playing for two different associations. He plays with Melton in the Big V competition and then represents Keilor Thunder in the Victorian Junior Basketball League. “I started playing with mates when I was six and it started developing from there,” he said. “I’ve played with Keilor since under-12 to help my development.” Collins, who is playing with Melton’s youth league side, is using the experience of playing Big V senior and youth league competitions last season to help take his game to the next level. “It’s been good just trying to find my game and get the most out of myself at Melton,” he said. “The men are more of a challenge and helps with youth league. It’s made my game faster.” Collins is keen to move his basketballing career forward. “Hopefully I can get to the highest level possible, which is the NBA.” Collins is one of two Melton players named in state basketball teams this year. Tonga Matapule Otutaha was named in the under-16 Victoria Country team for the national championships to be played in Queensland in July.

and looking to improve on the eighth spot of last season. “We had a practice match against Clunes and didn’t know anything about them,” she said. “We’ve never been big scorers and we won 67-25. “We’re looking forward to the season. Towards the end of last year, we led against Melton Centrals, before we ended up losing. “Against Rupo we stayed with them for three quarters. We’re looking forward to playing these teams.” The Rams are due to start their season on April 14 against Melton Centrals. Tara Murray
Grand final on the cards for Thoroughbreds Melton Thoroughbreds have set their sights high for the Big V youth league 2 men’s season. After missing out on finals last season, first year coach Josh Crowe plans to turn it around this year. “To be honest, I’ve made it pretty clear I expect to win this year,” he said. “We’re not settled on making finals and we looked pretty good on the first weekend. “Everyone is here to play, they want to put the effort in to win it.” The Thoroughbreds started their season is strong form with three wins from two rounds. But the side was stripped of its second win for playing an ineligible player. The Thoroughbreds won their first match easy but their second and third matches were much closer. In their most recent match, the Thoroughbreds needed until overtime to overcome Western Port Steelers. Crowe said it had been a big pre-season with a number of players to select from. He said of the final squad, only one player isn’t from Melton. “We haven’t played with our full team yet,” he said. “We’ve got one kid that has state experience and a couple that have played basketball in America. “There’s also some that have played senior Big V basketball.” Broden Collins, who played some senior Big V basketball, will be part of the state team late this month. Bol Bak and Fernando Rodriguez have both played basketball overseas, while Panashe Dzimati, who is still in the US, will join the side in the next few weeks. Bak started the season on fire averaging 35.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. Crowe said he was enjoying the head coaching role this season. “I’ve been an assistant coach for the last two years,” he said. “It’s awesome and I can sort of run things the way I want to run them. “The boys have done a great job so far.” The Thoroughbreds have another double header this weekend, playing Whittlesea Pacers on Saturday night and Frankston Blues on Sunday. The senior men face Southern Peninsula Sharks at Hillview Stadium, and the women travel to Mornington Breakers. Tara Murray 29 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2018

Young squash ace is racing up the rankings Hillside’s Joanne Joseph used to watch her father Anil play squash every week. She enjoyed her time mucking around on the courts so much that her dad enrolled her in Squash Logic Melton’s Oz squad program to learn the basic skills of the game in early 2016. Now the 10-year-old’s game is going from strength to strength and she competed in her first major tournament in September. Joseph said she fell in love with the sport straight away. “I started playing as my dad would take me to watch him,” she said. “He would let me and my cousins play on the courts and I really liked playing. “Dad then signed me up to do Oz squad and my coach Richard [Calligarni] taught me how to hold the racquet and learn shots. “I then started to play competition.” Joseph quickly had an impact at a state level and has competed in Australian and international events. In the past six months, she finished runner-up
in Squash Victoria’s Xmas Cup, won bronze in the under-11 girls at the Oceania International and Australian Junior Open, first runner-up in the SSL junior age event in the under-15 girls and won the under-13 girls Tasmanian State Junior Open. Most recently, she won the division C girls section at the Goulburn Valley Junior Age tournament. Joseph has risen up in both the state and national rankings. She’s now the number one-ranked under-11 girl in Victoria and ranked sixth nationally for the same age group. In December her national ranking was 18th. The Bacchus Marsh Grammar student said she was slowly getting used to playing players of a higher ability. She said she wasn’t surprised with her ranking because of all the work she had been doing. She’s started playing in under-13 and under-15 competitions to gain more experience.
“I’m practicing four times a week,” she said. “I train with the national coaches on Fridays and it’s good as they’ve taught me loads of stuff. “I found it challenging playing tournaments to start with as I had never played them before. “I started to get through a few tournaments and had a rough idea of how I should play against them.” Joseph’s short-term goal is to win an Australian Open title and said there was no reason if she didn’t keep developing she couldn’t represent Australia. She is earmarked to represent Victoria next year at the national championships as part of the Victorian team. Joseph still attends Squash Logic with her father, but now to play him. Her rapid development has led to some serious matches with her father. “I sometimes beat him,” she said. “He is really bringing his A-game as he doesn’t want to lose.” Tara Murray
Devils ready to rumble By Tara Murray Darley isn’t resting on its laurels as it tries to maintain top dog status in the Ballarat Football League. After the club claimed both the senior and reserves premierships last year, Devils coach Heath Scotland said everyone was just as determined heading into season 2018. “It’s been a relatively long pre-season, but it seems like it has gone quick,” he said. “We’re looking forward to the season getting under way. “We don’t want to focus on 2017 – that page has been turned. We want to make sure we’re ready to go. “It’s a different feeling this year – we’re the hunted.” The Devils were one of the early movers in the recruitment department over summer, signing Henderson medallists Steven Kennedy and Jake Edwards, along with forward Dylan Reid. Kennedy and Edwards are returning to the club after stints elsewhere. The Devils have since lost Kyle Docherty and Chris Graham, who have both moved on to other clubs. “We’ve lost two quality guys and we’ve got some quality guys in as well,” Scotland said. “We’ve lost some depth … guys that didn’t play seniors or only one or two games. They’ve moved on or retired.” One positive sign for the Devils in the off season has been the development of their younger players. Scotland said they had six 16-year-olds play senior football in their practice matches against Caroline Springs. He said he was unsure whether they would play in the senior team come the season proper but he was thrilled with the likes of James Pope, Mitch Ward and Thomas Presnell, along with the four players in the Western Jets squad. “There’s a bit of hope for the future,” he said. “We’re making sure some kids are pushing for selection. Last year, we didn’t push too many through. “We’ll see a different mix this year.” Scotland said Jessee Pattison, who has come from the Western Region Football League, is a young player who could look at holding down a spot. The Devils’ start to the season will big – they will be facing cross-town rival Bacchus Marsh. The seniors and reserves games will be grand final rematches. Scotland said that while the Devils were dealing with a few injuries, he expected to field a near full-strength line-up come round one. “It’ll be a good test. My job will be selecting a side of 22 players from the 28 to 29 guys who can play senior football.” 30 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2018

Springers keen to take the next step up Caroline Springs is looking forward to the challenge that awaits in Hockey Victoria’s Vic League 2 women’s competition. Having gone through their inaugural season undefeated on the way to the F-grade pennant premiership, the Springers have been promoted up several grades this year. Springers’ coach Ron Shadbolt said it was a challenge and they were looking forward to stepping up as many of the playing group have already played at this level and higher. “To be honest, we probably should have been in this competition last year,” he said. “The pace is a bit quicker and the competition will be a lot stronger. “Our practice matches have been against state league 1 sides and been more than competitive. “It’s a good challenge and I think we’ll be middle of the table, towards top four.” Shadbolt said they had kept most of last year’s playing group and added a couple of players with Vic League experience. Shadbolt, who coached both women’s teams last season, will share the coaching duties of the top side with Francesca Lennie. Bethany Sproal and Alexandra Grant-Taylor will coach the club’s second women’s side which will remain in the metro competition. Shadbolt said they decided to keep their second side in the metro competition as a number of new players were starting out and he wanted to give them the chance to develop. The second side also won a premiership last season. “We’ve separated the players into two groups with their different requirements and skill levels and appointed coaches for both groups,” he said. Shadbolt said they were still looking for new players for this season, for women’s, men’s and juniors. They have about 20 under-10 and under-12 players and would like to get to 30 before the season starts. The men’s side is playing in metro A north west this season. The Springers’ women’s Vic League side starts their season on April 14 against Melton.
