Hope after bad break By Esther Lauaki It will be Tim Van Berlo’s love for his family and rugby that drives him through the next phase of his life. The Melton Rugby Union Club stalwart is preparing to have his lower leg amputated on Friday (April 13) and he told Star Weekly he was “actually excited” for what was to come. Van Berlo broke his ankle during a match when he was 18 years old, almost 17 years ago, but the injury never quite healed properly. “I’ve been involved in Melton Rugby since I was 13,” he said. “The original break was in 2001. “It was OK for about 12 years and during that time I was still playing, on and off. “But there was so much damage left over from the first break.” He discovered years later that he had fractured the same leg again while working in Western Australia and, in a cruel turn of events, he broke it severely once more. “I was home eight hours from the hospital after one of my surgeries and I went to open a door … my leg just collapsed and my tibia snapped in half,” Van Berlo said. “It was the most painful experience I’ve even been through. “I’ve broken bones before, dislocated shoulders and fingers through rugby … but nothing compared to the pain of that.” Van Berlo has since had 13 surgeries and has used crutches to get around for the past three years. He also battled a serious infection due to his leg brace. He said amputation was a last resort for him and his medical team. “I’m excited about it,” he said. “It’s going to be a new start to my life. “The pain and swelling has persisted all these years and it’s absolutely taken a toll on my life and my family. “I haven’t been able to work since 2015 and I was in hospital for five months last year. “My son plays rugby for Melton under-10s and all he wants is for me to be able to go to the park and kick a ball around with him. I haven’t been able to do that for years. “My future goal is to play on the same senior team as my son.” The Melton sporting community has rallied around Van Berlo and his family with an online crowdfunding campaign raising more than $4000 in nine days. RSPCA investigates dumped cat By Esther Lauaki A cat that was locked in a bird cage bound with rope and then dumped in a Kurunjang park is now in safe hands and the case is being investigated by the RSPCA. Animal rescue officers are calling on the community to help find who was responsible for discarding the cat which was found by a nearby resident on Good Friday and surrendered to an animal welfare rescuer for care in Melton. The cat has since been transferred to the RSPCA’s Burwood shelter. Nathan Miles, of Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue, said the community’s help was
needed in what he described as a case of “cruel abandonment and neglect”. “Sadly, Good Friday was not so good for this poor cat who was found cruelly dumped in a tied-up bird cage in a reserve,” Mr Miles said. “It is our understanding this poor cat was stuck in the cage all day in the hot sun. “Luckily a kind resident found the cage at the back of her fence after arriving home. “The resident brought the cage with the cat to her house and then called us for assistance.” Mr Miles urged residents to spread the word on social media to help with the investigation. “As this is a cruelty case … the RSPCA is fully investigating and utilising all their resources to
identify and potentially prosecute the alleged perpetrator of this animal abuse,” he said. “We are calling on any residents who may have security cameras who border the reserve between Centenary Avenue, Tulloch Avenue, Manning Avenue, Pennyroyal Crescent, Walsingham Crescent, Narebar Court, Gunnawarra Road and Warianna Court in Kurunjang to please check their security cameras.” Anyone with information can contact the RSPCA quoting reference number 340469. May the fourth be with you as Stormtroopers, Skywalkers and Star Wars fans of all forms take over the Melton Library and Learning Hub. Fans of the epic science fiction films can come dressed as their favourite hero or villain from Star Wars for the event on May 4. There will be activities, games, crafts and special guests along for the night. Education partnerships librarian Jessie Michael said the aim was to encourage young people to share their interests. “Everyone is getting their costumes ready and looking forward to a fun evening,” Ms Michael said. “It’s about getting kids excited and making sure that the library is a fun space where they can come and enjoy their interests.” She said the Star Wars night follows the success of a Harry Potter-themed event last year. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The event will be held between 6pm and 8pm. Bookings are essential. Details: bit.ly/2JlK9YA Esther Lauaki

Pre-Easter police warnings appeared to have had little affect on more than 150 drivers caught speeding on Melton and Moorabool roads during the long weekend. Police nabbed 47 speeding drivers in Melton and 89 in Moorabool during Operation Nexus, which ran from March 29 to April 2. Two drivers were nabbed drink-driving, eight while drug-affected, 33 driving unregistered vehicles, 17 had no licence, 13 weren’t wearing seatbelts and four were driving while disqualified or suspended from driving. Motorists were warned before the Easter long weekend that police would be out in force and would be targeting drivers who were speeding, distracted or drug- or alcohol-impaired. Road policing assistant commissioner Doug Fryer said it was disappointing that motorists were choosing to do the wrong thing when behind the wheel, risking their own lives and those of others. “With a strong police presence out on the roads over the long weekend, our police officers detected over 9570 traffic offences,” he said. Police said that across Victoria, 327 drink-drivers had been detected and 230 drug-driving offences discovered.

Noise call made on Melton cars By Esther Lauaki Two drivers are facing $800 fines and another four were served with official warnings for noisy vehicles in Melton. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) officers and Victoria Police conducted a roadside operation targeting loud vehicles earlier this month, resulting in on-the-spot testing of seven cars. Six of those were over the legal limit for noise emissions.
The loudest vehicle tested was a Ford Falcon that recorded a reading of 100 decibels – equivalent to a jet taking off 350 metres away. EPA assessments director Tim Eaton said noise limits were designed to protect the community. The Ford Falcon was recorded at 10 decibels above the legal limit for such a vehicle, loud enough to affect people in the street and nearby homes, Mr Eaton said. “In a residential area like Melton, noisy vehicles can interfere with people’s enjoyment

of shopping, cafes or just going about their lives in their own neighbourhood, including getting a good night’s sleep,” he said. “You can report a noisy vehicle at your local police station, and if a police officer assesses the vehicle as being too noisy, it will be referred
to EPA, which may issue the vehicle owner with a notice requiring that it be sent for testing.” Mr Eaton said that the unreasonable noise provisions of the Environment Protection Act also applied to vehicles on residential premises if a car was left running in a driveway. “The rules apply to motorcycles, too,” he said. “Drivers and riders who choose to modify their machines leave themselves open to enforcement action from EPA and Victoria Police.”
Tea for a good cause Home-cooked delights are set to draw the crowds again at the annual McGrath Foundation high tea this week. Melton Valley Rotary club will join the foundation to host its seventh annual afternoon tea at the Melton Community Hall raising money and awareness for breast care nurses. Breast care nurses are health professionals who are specially trained to manage the care of breast cancer patients throughout the course of their treatment. Event organiser Lorraine Shand said the event has grown in popularity over the years. “When we started hosting high teas we had about 42 people come along,” Ms Shand said. “Now we’re catering for about 160 people. “It’s all home-cooked food made by our Rotary members and we have guest speakers to talk to people about the work that these nurses do.” There are 119 McGrath Breast Care Nurses in mostly regional and rural communities
around the country where such treatment may be hard to find. They rely on fundraising to continue and expand their services, Ms Shand said. There will be a raffle, auctions and stall as well as tea and treats during the high tea. Ms Shand said last year’s event raised nearly $7000 and organisers hope to repeat the same success this year. “There will be gentlemen wearing pink bow ties and gloves and serving tea,” she said. “It’s a great event.” Esther Lauaki

Wise ways to save water Melton and Moorabool students are tackling water sustainability issues thanks to $12,000 in grants from Western Water. Three schools have received grants as part of World Water Day celebrations and have pledged their commitment to make a difference. World Water Day, held annually on March 22, focuses attention on the importance of water. This year’s theme – Nature for Water – explored nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century. Western Water’s general manager, Graham Holt said: “This year we decided to offer different types of grants to celebrate World
Water Day – so we launched our Choose Tap and Target 155 grants.” A Target 155 grant was awarded to Bacchus Marsh Primary School which will use the funding to clean up, plant and install an irrigation system in their existing frog bog garden. The Target 155 grants aim to encourage people to keep their daily water use at or below 155 litres. Wedge Park Primary School in Melton West and Toolern Vale Primary School were awarded Choose Tap grants, which will assist with the supply and installation of drinking water fountains and bottle refill stations. New schools to meet local needs By Esther Lauaki Plans for four new schools in Melton and Caroline Springs are gaining traction and residents are being encouraged to have their say. A $236.8 million state government package announced earlier this year has helped secure land for more than a dozen new schools across Melbourne’s fastest growing areas including Grasslands Primary School, Cobblebank
Secondary School, a proposed primary school for Rockbank and Eynesbury Station P6 School. The Victorian School Building Authority is calling for feedback from residents at a community engagement workshop on April 26 at Rockbank. The authority will be working with local educators and councils to match school designs with local needs. Education minister James Merlino said
that the input would help shape the future of education in the area and ensure the new schools cater for local students and their families. “We’re breaking the cycle of short-term planning for new schools and investing now to meet the needs of the future,” Mr Merlino said of the government’s investment package last month. “Right across the state we’re building new schools to make sure that no matter where they
live, every child has the chance to get a great education. “New schools offer opportunities to build and enhance their wider communities.” The state government has already invested $2.5 billion into school infrastructure needed to meet the needs of growing population. Community engagement on the new schools will be held at Rockbank Hall, 24 Old Leakes Road from 6.30-8pm on April 26. Details: www.engage.vic.gov.au/MCSarea
Grease is the word It will be all go for these seven dancers as they make their debut in Grease - The Arena Experience this week. Melton’s Jordan, Shayla, Lesha, Brooke, Clare, Nateisha and Hollie will be part of the mass ensemble of 500 young musical theatre performers who get to star in the musical production which is on at Hisense Arena on April 13 and 14. The young local group were put through a training boot camp prior to rehearsals, dancing to hits from the most popular movie musical of all time. Eleven-year-old Jordan’s mother Angela Ryder said the girls were excited to have been selected from about 2000 who auditioned. “The girls are ecstatic to be chosen,” Ms Ryder said. “It was no easy feat to go in either, during the audition phase they had to sing, act and dance their way through the process. “The girls were also involved in several boot camps as a lead-up to the show and they are
required to be part of daily rehearsals during the school holiday break.” Jordan, who attends Arnold’s Creek Primary School, said practicing was “not as easy as it looks”. “You spend a lot of time away from your family learning the choreography and songs, but I really love it because I get to sing and dance to songs like Y You’re the One That I Want, Born to Hand Jive and We Go Together.” The world’s largest production of Grease features some of Australia’s biggest stars including international drag queen Courtney Act and Meghan O’Shea and Damon Wade in the lead roles of Sandy and Danny. West’s transport pain exposed By Benjamin Millar The dire state of public transport in Melbourne’s west is being put in the spotlight in a campaign pushing for more investment ahead of the November state election. Sitting MPs and potential candidates across the traditionally safe Labor heartland are being targeted to commit to greater spending on transport to keep up with the area’s rapid population growth. The Time For The West campaign wants new bus services rolled out to better connect suburbs, new bike paths to allow more people to
cycle safely and a region-wide study to identify the most urgent transport projects needed to meet growth of about a million extra people in coming decades. Co-ordinated by LeadWest, an advocacy group backed by the west’s councils, the campaign is highlighting the causes of car dependency and difficulties residents have moving around the area. LeadWest is collecting stories from residents such as William Pendlebury, who spends almost two and a half hours a day on the round-trip between his Altona home and study in Sunshine – a trip that would take little more
than 20 minutes each way by car. Mr Pendlebury said his existing options were to take two buses or a bus and two trains. Infrequent services and indirect routes all added to his travel time. “The limits of the system mean it is quite slow,” he said. “A lot of it is the times in-between, waiting at a stop for the next bus.” LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said transport investment in Melbourne’s west had fallen well behind the pace of growth. “That makes it harder to spend enough time with our families, it’s harder to access job opportunities and too often there’s no option except to drive in congested traffic,” he said.
Mr Rowley said politicians needed to be doing more to make sure transport services met the needs of rapidly growing communities. “It’s time for politicians to listen to us and fix transport in the west,” he said. Mr Rowley pointed to a poll of more than 2000 voters conducted by Lonergan Research that found that poor public transport services would influence the vote of more than half of people in Melbourne’s west. Wheely handy advice Trained mechanics will be breaking down the basics of car servicing for participants of the new Women on Wheels workshop. The free workshop in Caroline Springs is a pilot program that aims to provide women with practical guidelines for motoring safety and vehicle maintenance. Technicians from Lakeside Kia will be on hand to demonstrate basic car maintenance skills from checking and correcting tyre pressures to changing a flat tyre safely and jump-starting batteries. Kia fixed operations manager Mike Coleman said that the Women On Wheels program will “demystify” mechanical terminology and ensure participants understand the essentials of car servicing. “Day-to-day vehicle maintenance, motoring and mechanical knowledge are often overlooked when it comes to skill acquisition for women,”
Mr Coleman said. “The Women On Wheels program is designed to assist female drivers to become more mechanically literate, and will offer hands-on practical exercises designed to … ensure they operate with self-assurance and confidence when it comes to motoring.” Service manager Cameron Lord said it was important that all drivers have some knowledge about how to look after their vehicles. “We hope that the participants will be able to walk into a dealership for a service and when they’re told that they need their discs machined, they can say, ‘Yes, I know what that is and where it is’.” He said that refresher workshops and programs for learner drivers would be held in the future. Women on Wheels workshops start at 6.30pm on April 18 at Lakeside Kia. Esther Lauaki

Being a teenager can be tricky. Juggling parental, peer and academic expectations alone can be challenging.
I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Easter, and took the opportunity to spend time with family, and loved ones.
Add body image, bullying and social media pressures into the mix, and it can all become a bit much. That’s why Council is hosting a free youth mental health forum to help get young people, and their parents and carers, talking about mental health and wellbeing. The Young Minds Matter event will be held on 19 April at Catholic Regional College, Melton West and feature speakers including former AFL star Wayne Schwass, musician Clare Bowditch and comedian Nelly Thomas. Representatives from headspace and beyondblue will be there, and attendees will have the chance to participate in interactive workshops run by The HopeFull Institute and Jonny Shannon. Having honest and open discussions about positive mental health is incredibly important, so I encourage young people, and the adults in their lives, to come along to get practical information to help young people struggling with mental health. Registrations are essential. Visit trybooking.com/upjt for more details. It’s a very busy time of year behind the scenes at Melton City Council; we are deep in the Budget process, planning for the year ahead. Council has committed ¡ ¢ of $134 million. The draft Budget was released last month, after much discussion with residents, community and sporting groups, but it’s not too late to have your say. I urge residents to make a submission to the draft Budget, and ensure your voice is heard. You can submit your thoughts until 5pm on Friday 27 April, through our website at melton.vic.gov.au/budget1819, or by emailing submissions@melton.vic.gov.au Last year, we asked the community to share their memories about the City of Melton over the decades, to help us piece together a book detailing the history of the municipality. Let’s talk youth mental health By Esther Lauaki
Mum and son in hair-raising fun
A footy star and entertainers are teaming up to inspire people to talk about youth mental health at an interactive forum in Melton next week. The free Young Minds Matter: Youth Mental Health event on April 19 aims to get young people, their parents and carers talking about mental wellbeing at home. Key speakers will include former AFL star Wayne Schwass, musician Clare Bowditch and comedian Nelly Thomas, as well as representatives from headspace and beyondblue. They will provide information, advice and links to service providers.

If Kai was looking for a way to stand out from the crowd – he’s found it. The Melton South eight year-old, who celebrates his birthday this week, felt inspired to dye his hair bright red to mark the World’s Greatest Shave recently. His commitment to the cause, which is one of the Leukaemia Foundation’s major fundraisers for blood cancer, is what encouraged mum Tiegan Wilson to lop off her own locks for the charity. “He just came up to me one day and asked me if he could colour his hair to raise money for the World’s Greatest Shave,” Ms Wilson said. “We got our family and friends to donate and he got to choose a colour… he was really excited. “My awesome little dude Kai took the initiative to colour his hair and raise money and it gave me that push to do the same. “I am ever so proud of Kai.” Ms Wilson cut off about 25 centimetres of her hair which will be used to make wigs. Together the pair collected $260 for their effort which was donated to the Worlds Greatest Shave on their behalf by Melton salon Lady and the Hair. The salon also hosted a free haircut event to raise money. The total donation by the business was $2339.35.
Having open and honest discussions ... is incredibly - Bob Turner important
(Joe Mastroianni)
’’
Melton mayor Bob Turner urged all young people from across the municipality to take up the opportunity. “This forum will have the answers to a lot of the questions you might have about mental health and where to go if you need to reach out for some help,” Cr Turner said. “Seeking help is a positive sign and it’s important for young people to have a trusted adult that they can talk to. “Having honest and open discussions about positive mental health is incredibly important. It can help you recognise the signs of a friend who might be struggling with anxiety or depression, and reaching out to them in a meaningful way might just save their life” Young Minds Matter will be held from 5-8.30pm at Catholic Regional College, Melton West. The local community has helped a Ballan family raise more than $5000 to give children with autism an opportunity to learn through technology. Keeley’s Cause, started by 13-year-old Keeley, has been going for just six months and has already helped seven children to get the best out of their education through the use of iPads. With the support of the Ballan Lions Club, Keeley’s family hosted an Easter Egg hunt at the Ballan Racecourse during the recent long weekend. Mum Sharon Murphy gave a “big shout out” to the community after the event raised $5025 towards the purchase of iPads. “We need to help as many kids as we possibly can to further their education to prevent them from being unable to function normally when they leave high school,” Mrs Murphy said. “It started off with Keeley wanting to do a couple of sausage sizzles and get enough money to buy two iPads to help other kids like her. “We’re only six months in and the support we’ve got is absolutely amazing. It’s only going to grow from here.” Mrs Murphy said the Easter hunt was such a “fantastic effort” that the family has decided to make it an annual event. “We couldn’t have achieved such a successful result without you all.” Esther Lauaki

Cruel blow still haunts Porky By Goya Dmytryshchak Graeme “Porky” Brooke still hurts – but not physically. The first cousin of Australian boxing great Lionel Rose gets emotional when he talks about how his boxing dream ended. His story has been immortalised in Stolen Glory: The Tale of Porky Brooke, a film from Welcome Stranger Productions directed by Altona Meadows’ Aaron Ellis and produced by Lester Ellis jnr.
‘‘
It hurt a lot, the way I went out of boxing
’’
Aaron interviewed boxing royalty from Melbourne’s west for the film, including his uncle, Lester “Master Blaster” Ellis, and Williamstown’s Barry “Boy” Michael, who broke Porky’s unbeaten record. Porky, now 54 and living in Keilor Downs, is described in the film as a prodigy. He worshipped Rose and left school at 16 to follow him in to the ring. Porky had 18 straight wins before winning the Commonwealth lightweight title at Melbourne’s Festival Hall in 1984 aged 21. His battler parents, Graeme snr and Gwen, had put their Flemington house on the line to finance his bid for the Commonwealth title. Porky had a shot at becoming world champion when he was made to undergo non-compulsory medical tests that detected an irregularity. Speaking to Star Weekly at the Team Ellis Gym on a gritty Keilor East estate where he mentors young boxers, Porky said he believed he was targeted for testing because of a falling

out with management. “It hurt – it hurt a lot, the way I went out of boxing,” he said. “I didn’t want to go out that way, and the boxing board doing this to me – Commonwealth champion – it really hurt, them taking my licence off me.
“The boxing board made me go for a head scan, memory test and an EEG. Well, the head scans were good, memory perfect, but something small was showing on the EEG.” Porky went to court to fight to get his licence back. But he was delivered a knockout blow, barred from boxing at age 22.
“There’s a lot of politics in boxing,” Porky said. “It eats at me and it hurts, just what the boxing board did to me … I don’t want to swear.” Stolen Glory: The Tale of Porky Brooke will premiere at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre in May.

The objectives of our blogs are related to our 3Rs – reduce, reuse and repair to save money, save the planet and save souls.
I lived here for a short time in the early 1980s and worked in a large local organisation. My son was born whilst I was living in Melton, and was baptised at St Dominics. I came back to live in Melton in the early 2000s because it was affordable, close to services and I found a house to buy that had been cared for.
How did you get involved with these groups?
What are you passionate about?
I was passionate about having a say on a local and global level. Social media affords me such a platform therefore I created most of the groups and pages. I am a huge user and supporter of any platform that mobilises citizens to speak up and share what’s on their minds.
I am passionate about many things. Together with my husband Danny, we are passionate about raising our voices and having a say in our local community. I administrate 14 Facebook groups and pages across the many interests that we have. Melton Artists and Crafters [MACS], Mend It, Melton [MIM], Melton Community Leadership and Imagine Melton Zero Waste are four of them.
What is the best thing about this community?
MACS Facebook group was created by me. As an arts activist and textile artist, I was keen to seek out and network local artists and crafters. It was hoped that from the connections made online, MACS members would then seek each other out, and gather together. As an arts activist, I have been advocating and lobbying on MACS, for a dedicated space or building for our local artists to network and create. When people ask why we have not retired to the beach or the country, I highlight that I would be lost without my fast NBN service. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? If I had the magical power to change something about Melton, it would be its ‘struggle town’ image. I would wave my wand at people who unfairly stereotype it as an unsafe backwater. FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds some spark at the Park Hotel Consider The Sauce has been bemused in the past month or so by the doings of a newish western suburbs food business. On the one hand, they’ve been talking up the outcome of a fancy photo shoot. On the other, they’ve been serving – in my couple of experiences and likewise for some friends – food that bears not much resemblance to that pictured in those slick pics. So I am interested to see how the Park Hotel goes in terms of replicating the fare depicted in glossy, beautiful photographs accompanying the media release heralding the joint’s new autumn menu – the one we have been invited to try (see full disclosure below). We start with an absolutely ripping dish – zucchini and cauliflower fritters served with red curry mayo ($10, top photo). The minced/chopped vegetables remain wonderfully al dente and the mayo has just the right amount of zing. Pan-fried kangaroo fillet with pancetta and truffle potato gratin, treacle-glazed parsnips with a red wine and dark chocolate jus ($32) is Bennie’s first time with eating roo. He likes it plenty, though it seems to me the meat could’ve been hotter than the lukewarm he’s received. From the specials list comes my chargrilled atlantic salmon with garlic-wilted spinach, kipfler potato and a dill hollandaise ($28). The fish is succulent, tender and tasty, despite apparently being more well-cooked than is often the case with this species.
PARK HOTEL Address: 12 Watton Street, Werribee Phone: 9741 1441 The vegetables – as with those on Bennie’s plate – are perfectly OK, but seem more like regular pub food than the step-up in class I’ve been seeking. Bennie’s having none of that. Proclaims he: “Dad, this is way better than normal pub food!” OK, based on our desserts he’s on target. “I’ve never tasted anything like this before,” says he of the sticky date panna cotta with butterscotch sauce, caramel popcorn and green apple gel ($12). And he means that as a compliment! The unusual flavours are winners in a fine sweet offering. The custard tart with orange and blackberry compote with a toasted croissant ice-cream ($12) is almost as enjoyable. But it does surprise. We have been expecting something gooey and viscous – along the lines of a vanilla slice or creme caramel. Instead the custard tart itself is quite solid – more like a slice. Still good, though! (Consider The Sauce dined at the Park Hotel as guests of the management.) EYNESBURY 662 Eynesbury Road, 3338 Harcourts: 8065 5007
Price: Contact agent
In the peaceful hamlet of Eynesbury, where life is kicked back and the pace leisurely, this house on the end of a row of duplexes is a perfect retirees’ haven or first property for a young family. It’s just down the road from The Homestead community hub and the golf club. And with the potential for the founding of a primary school and growth from a recent land release, the town – with its soul-uplifting entry via a long road lined with grey box forest – is likely destined for bigger things. 18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 10, 2018

Private sale Behind a white picket fence and small garden area, the house has entry under a verandah to a hallway laid with pearl-grey floor tiles which continue on into the expansive living hub at the back. On the way are two carpeted bedrooms with the same soft-grey roller blinds and wall paint as found throughout. One has a built-in robe, the main with a fitted walk-in robe and en suite with raised square vanity basin atop a pale wood-grain vanity unit. The third fitted bedroom is down a rear hallway (with two french-door closets)
which it shares with a bathroom decorated similarly to the smaller, as well as a separate toilet. The sleek kitchen, with soft-grey stone benches, has matte-white vinyl-wrap cabinetry, opaque glass-fronted overheads, white splashback tiles, a step-in corner pantry, a dishwasher and Technika Bellissimo 900mm cooker. The big laundry, with french-door closet and cupboards, is off the living hub. Ducted heating and a split-system offer effective climate control.

Sliding glass doors open to the good-sized side yard – ready for beautification – as well as the backyard which has a lawn and the rest laid with loose pebbles. There is plenty of scope to complete a personal project. A double carport, accessed from a rear laneway, can easily double as entertainment space as needed. This property will soon feature on BBC’s television show Wanted Down Under in the UK and Ireland. Carole Levy

Cutting corners can lead to financial pain for landlords Abigail Koch, from comparethemarket.com. au, says property is unlike other business models – what is regarded as a business by the investor is also a home for the tenant. “Investors need to provide a rental home that is comfortable, safe and secure – and also complies with state leasing legislation,” she says. “But at the same time, they need to secure a good tenant who pays their rent and looks after the property. “When property becomes a business, the temptation is to cut corners in order to save on costs, but this could lead to financial losses in years to come.” Ms Koch reveals five cost-cutting mistakes that could lead to a financial blow-out for landlords.
2. A poor screening process Landlords should know if their property managers are checking that applicants can afford the rent and have good credit records. 3. Failing to act on tenant requests Tenants can lodge a complaint against landlords for failing to rectify requests for urgent repairs or maintenance. Tenants
(iStock)
1. DIY property management Agent fees – which include the letting fee for securing a new tenant, management fees (usually between 5-12 per cent of weekly rent) and administration costs – are a small price to pay for an experienced and knowledgeable professional. Experienced property managers will generally handle the advertising, lodge lease agreements and bond forms, screen tenants, conduct inspections, chase rent and organise tradespeople for repairs. Landlords who manage their own properties risk paying more in the end. may legally be able to break a lease if the property becomes uninhabitable, leaving the landlord out of pocket for rent. Landlords may also be required to pay compensation for losses tenants have suffered as a result of the breach.
comply with state safety requirements. Landlords should seek legal advice to make sure they meet all requirements under the law, including smoke alarms, secure fencing around pools and spas, and adequate locks on windows and balconies.
4. Failing to comply with safety requirements Landlords can incur fines for failing to
5. Discriminating against tenants Landlords have the right to choose a suitable tenant provided they do not
discriminate against applicants. If an agent or landlord is found guilty of making a property unavailable to an applicant of a particular ethnicity or age, for example, and making that same property available to another applicant, they face heavy fines under state anti-discrimination laws. Landlords must assess applicants based on their credit histories, incomes and rental histories.

SPORT New-look Centrals an unknown quantity Melton Centrals will enter the Riddell District Netball League season unsure where they fit in. One of the most stable teams in recent years, Centrals have had a number of off season changes. In his 10th year as coach, Centrals’ Randy Pereira said he’d never experienced so many changes to the top side in one season. “Last year we had two or three changes and that was a lot,” he said. “[This season] Only Jess May and Bec [Morabito] are the definite players from the preliminary final starting seven. “Sally [Portbury] has started a new job, but we’re hoping she’ll be able to fill in. “We’re still talking to Rachel Dovaston and fingers crossed she’ll play some games as well.” In a big boost for Centrals, Melissa Laird is returning after not playing last season. Laird, who has represented the league previously, was
one of the top defenders in the competition, and Pereira said he was thrilled to have her back on court. “If we had her last season, I think we may have made the grand final.” Katie Hepburn, who previously played with Shepparton United, also joins Centrals and will join Morabito in the shooting circle. They’ve also picked up Jess Clayton and plan to promote a couple of younger players. Rita White-Kay, who formed the shooting combination with Morabito last season, will miss this year with a knee injury. Pereira said he expected the B-grade side to be a strong team, while they would have a young C-grade side which had a bit of height. He expected them to be in the mix for finals. The under-19 team will also be a young team, with most players eligible to play under-17s. Centrals start their season on Saturday at
home against Rockbank. There will be just 10 clubs in A-grade as Lancefield and Sunbury Kangaroos will not field teams. Pereira said it was disappointing that yet again there wasn’t a full complement of teams. Diggers Rest will start their season against Romsey on Saturday. On the first weekend of the split opening round, Macedon held strong against Riddell in a brilliant start to win 32-18. In the other match, Rupertswood proved too strong for Woodend-Hesket, winning 61-35. Tara Murray
Rebecca Morabito will again suit up for Melton Centrals. (Shawn Smits)
Jets break their drought By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets have broken into the TAC Cup girls winners’ circle for the first time. The Jets, featuring in their second season in the competition, broke a streak of nine consecutive losses with a thrilling five-point win over Eastern Ranges at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. “They’ve been working really hard towards that first win,” Jets female talent co-ordinator Claudia Davey said of the team. “Each week, they’ve been improving little bit by little bit and finally it paid off today getting the win. “They were all very excited and deserved the reward for all their hard work and all the coaches who have been working very hard as well.” There was nothing to separate the two sides nearly the whole game. Scores were level at quarter-time, half-time and three-quarter time before the Jets claimed the points with a two-goal-to-one final term. “It was pretty much goal for goal for most of the game,” Davey said. “It turned into a very exciting last quarter.” The difference in the game was Western Jets sharpshooter Caitlin Greiser. Greiser kicked four goals straight to give the Jets the potency they needed in attack. The Australian Rules convert is one of the form forwards in the competition with seven goals in her past two matches. Last year, Greiser was also scoring plenty of goals, but more so on a soccer field. “This is her first season of football, but she has that background in elite sport, so she’s a great influence on the other girls as well with her bit of extra maturity,” Davey said. “She works very hard and is really passionate about her football and wants to do well. “She’s played a bit of everything this season – ruck, back line and forward line – she’s quite tall and can read the game really well. “With her goalkicking the past couple of the weeks, the forward line looks to be a good place for her.” Elisabeth Georgostathis was hugely influential for the Western Jets. Georgostathis is constantly in the frame and uses her quickness to bound away from the packs. “She’s been playing very well,” Davey said. “Her work rate is incredible every game. “She stands out as an exceptional runner on our team. Her run and carry is important.” Isabelle Pritchard is one of the youngest members of the Western Jets at just 16, but has been super impressive. think she makes a mistake when she gets the ball,” Davey said. “She’s very clean and reads the game very well for a young player. “She has a lot of potential and I think she’ll go very far with her football.” With the monkey off the back and a win
under the belt, Western Jets can go into the last four rounds with a bit of confidence. The Jets players will return to club football this weekend before returning to action against the winless Dandenong Stingrays at Shepley Oval on April 22.
Springers build on first season After a debut season focusing on establishing a team, Caroline Springs’ men’s side is keen to take it to the next level in Hockey Victoria’s winter season. The Springers struggled at times last year, with a new side and with many still learning the game, but this season are expecting bigger things. Springers’ coach David Gorton said they were in a position to have two teams this season. Their top side will play in Metro A North West, having played in Pennant G last season. He said while they expect some good results from the top side, the second side would allow them to support new and returning players. “We’ll have a Metro A and Metro B team and with the way Hockey Victoria has restructured, we’ll take on some stronger clubs. “We have Premier League ambitions, so we may as well be playing quality clubs with big memberships and integrate some of their coaching methodically.” Gorton said pre-season form against some strong sides had shown they had improved during the off season. They played games against Ballarat and Bendigo, splitting the results, and the trip to Ballarat helped them sign new players. He said they had kept 16 players from last year’s squad of 20 while adding seven to eight new guys. “Some of those guys have strong experience,” he said. “It was about creating a viable squad … This year we’ll be a lot stronger. “Every spot we are more experienced and have a fair spread and have a more than capable team.” The Springers top side started their season on Saturday against Footscray. Gorton said they were hoping to hit the ground running, with high expectations for the side. “Last year was really about setting up a men’s side,” Gorton said. “On ability we should make the grand final if we’re able to keep our best side on the park.” The Springers’ top women’s side starts their Vic League 2 season on Saturday against Melton, in the first derby between the two local sides. Bacchus Marsh pumped to start another season Bacchus Marsh is hoping for another successful season in the AFL Goldfields’ women’s competition. The Cobras had a stunning season in the first year of the competition, making it through to the division 2 grand final. Despite falling short at the final hurdle, the Cobras were impressed with their progress throughout the season. Team manager Rod Bertram said they were planning another outstanding year. “Hopefully this will be a successful season, whether it is as successful as last season that is yet to be seen,” he said. “We’re going quite well and it’s looking promising. “We would love to go one better.” Bertram said they had lost a few players, but at the same time picked up some players. He hoped as the playing group developed throughout the season they would put together some strong football. In a bonus for the side, Abbey Bertram and Emily Crawford will play for the Cobras
full-time after being part of Geelong’s VFL side last season. Bertram said the two would bring back some experience, having played and trained with the VFL squad. Meanwhile, Elise Korteman and Jacinta Reid will get their chance at the higher level, after they were selected in Collingwood and Williamstown’s VFL squads respectively. Ben Hicks, who was an assistant coach last season, has taken on the head coaching role, replacing Hayley Gossow, who is involved with Collingwood’s VFL team. The AFL Goldfields’ competition will be one division this season. Bertram said Redan, which finished runners-up in division 1 last season, would be the favourites. The start to the season doesn’t get much bigger for the Cobras, as they host cross-town rivals Darley on April 22. It will be the Devils’ first women’s game. Bertram said they couldn’t wait to take to the field in that game.
“All the senior teams [men’s and women’s] will be playing Darley on that weekend,” he said. “We wanted to play the same day as the men and were hoping to have lights in time, but they weren’t done. “It will be a big weekend. From a senior’s point of view it doesn’t get much bigger.” Bertram said they were always after new players. Prospective players were welcome to attend training or get in contact with the club. “We won’t turn away anyone.” The Cobras will also field under-13 and youth league girls sides. Both teams will also start their seasons against Darley on the weekend of April 21. Melton Centrals women’s side will start their season against Lake Wendouree. Melton gallops home By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds had to come from behind to notch their second win of the Big V women’s division 2 season. After a poor first half, the Thoroughbreds trailed by nine points at half-time against Mornington Breakers on Sunday afternoon. Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn said they addressed a couple of key areas at the break. “It was a really tough first half,” she said. “Mornington came out and were shooting a really good percentage. “We had to play catch-up basketball. We became more focused on defence in the third and fourth quarters and looked to attack the basket.” The shots then started to fall for the Thoroughbreds as they reduced the margin to four points at the last change. The last quarter was all the Thoroughbreds, who shot 31-15 to claim a 71-59 victory. Olcorn said the step up in defence had made a big difference. “We wanted to win the rebounds and Mornington started to tire,” she said. “We were able to keep control and keep poise in the final quarter, which was pleasing.” Jenna Conroy and Emily Attard scored 19 points each, with Olcorn saying they stepped up on the offensive end in the second half. She also praised the efforts of Molly Young on the defensive end. Olcorn said Amina Benjamin and Caitlyn Spence were making the most of their minutes on court. “They are two of our new players,” she said. “They don’t get a lot of court time, but they play their roles every time they step on the court and lift the intensity.” Despite getting the win, Olcorn said the players had plenty to work on, including their poor starts. It was a second straight game in which they’ve started slowly. “Against Craigieburn, we were disappointing – we didn’t get into the game until the second half,” she said. “The first half needs working on as teams like Craigieburn will make us pay.” The Thoroughbreds are third with two wins after three rounds. The men’s side had two tough losses across the weekend. On Saturday night, the Thoroughbreds lost 89-81 to Southern Peninsula Sharks. For a second straight game, they gave up a three-quarter time lead. Four of the side’s five starters scored double figures. On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds started slowly against Altona Gators and couldn’t

recover, eventually losing 83-75. Without import Dexter Graham in the side, Emmanuel Malou top-scored with 28 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. Both Thoroughbreds senior sides have byes this weekend.
The Thoroughbreds’ youth league men division 2 side enjoyed a better weekend by winning both its matches. On Saturday night, they defeated Whittlesea Pacers 93-80 and then backed it up on Sunday, by winning 91-84 against Frankston Blues.
Hillside happy with debut A big loss in round one was never going to dampen the spirits of the Hillside Essendon District Football League women’s side. Taking to the field for the first time, the Sharks are mostly focused on building a strong program for the long term. Sharks coach Justin Fairservice said he was thrilled with the effort put in Friday night against Burnside Heights. The Bears, also playing in their first match, won 16.16 (112)-1.3 (9). Brooke McKinley kicked seven goals for the Bears, with Bree Campey named best on ground. “The group is really upbeat at the moment,” Fairservice said of his Sharks side. “I was proud of the women. “We’ve got a few things to work on, but it’s a long process.” Dearne Ellis, Lesley Garlick and Melissa Higgins were the best for the Sharks. Fairservice has coached junior sides at the Sharks and his sons play at the club. He decided to taken on coaching the women’s side to help build for an exciting future. He said many of the players had never previously played football and that the club was continuing to seek players. “It’s a fantastic concept and I wanted to help out,” he said. “We’ve got 22 women – it’s great to have the numbers to have a full team on the park. There’s a lot of inexperienced players … everyone is welcome to come play.” Fairservice said Samantha Stanley, Loren Lamont, Fiona Pazsa and Brittany McIntyre were four players to keep an eye on. He said that while the Sharks would love to get a few wins on the board this season, that wasn’t the main aim. “It will be a learning season,” he said. “I’ve got no expectations – I just want the players to learn and enjoy the game and help build the side in the right way.” In other matches, Avondale Heights-Taylors Lakes defeated Keilor Park 5.8 (38)-4.8 (32). Avondale Heights and Taylors Lakes made a last-minute decision to field a combined women’s side. Sunbury Kangaroos, Pascoe Vale and Westmeadows were the other winners at the weekend.
