Grant pumps up BMX club By Esther Lauaki For years, the Bacchus Marsh BMX Club has had to make do with substandard facilities with members forced to travel out of town to train. Last week, the club welcomed the beginning of works to transform its home ground at Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve into a $20 million community sporting hub, including an international competition standard BMX circuit, cricket pitch and two soccer ovals. Bacchus Marsh BMX club president Les Stuart said there were “exciting times ahead”. “We haven’t had any facilities in the area for many years,” Mr Stuart said. “Back in the ’80s we had a good facility but from what I understand it was demolished to make way for other sporting facilities with larger participation, but here we are now, 2018 and we’re getting a new track.”

There’s excitement in the air for this Melton south trio as they get ready for the Million Paws walk next month. Dog lover Colleen Clarke and her 17-month-old boisterous Siberian husky “pups”, Hamish and Phoebe, will take part in the Albert Park event, the RSPCA Victoria’s biggest fundraiser, on May 20. “I’ve always had huskies,” Ms Clarke said. “One of my previous huskies, that I had for 13 years, was rescued from the RSPCA and was the best dog ever. I’ve had them ever since. “I think it’s very important that we support the RSPCA and the brilliant work that they do, that’s why I wanted to do the Million Paws walk.” More than 15,000 people will walk at 16 sites across Victoria and money raised through entry fees, donations, online fundraising and merchandise will go toward RSPCA Victoria’s work. Chief executive Liz Walker said the animal welfare charity was aiming to raise $500,000. “Million Paws Walk is a fun way to make a difference to animal welfare,” Dr Walker said. At the flagship Albert Park Lake event, there will be live entertainment, food trucks, veterinary advice, dog washes and lots of fun exhibits. Details: www.millionpawswalk.com.au/ VIC

He said the track would allow the club to increase its membership, host competitions and unearth “the next generation of champions”. “For the past eight years we’ve been working with council and the state government to get a track with the aim of bringing the sport of BMX back to Bacchus Marsh,” Mr Stuart said. “We’ve had to travel out of town to Ballarat, Sunbury and Wyndham Vale to participate in competitions … Once our new facility is built that will enable our riders to participate in the sport more without having to travel.” The works are scheduled to finish June 2019. Sports minister John Eren was on site last Thursday to break ground on the project which was made possible by a $200,000 grant as part of the state government’s community sports infrastructure fund. Mr Eren said sport was booming in Bacchus Marsh. “We’re proud to be building a sporting hub in the heart of Bacchus Marsh – local clubs have been crying out for better facilities and we’re getting it done,” he said. “These upgrades will allow more locals to ride, bat or kick goals close to home, and give clubs a boost to grow and win silverware.” A cricket oval with hard wicket, two soccer pitches and irrigation and fencing will also be built to give local clubs greater flexibility and room to play during the busy winter season.

Horse paddock sells for $13m A former horse paddock on the banks of the Toolern Creek in Melton South has sold for about $13 million. The 16.78 hectares at 60-72 Bridge Road is already zoned GRZ1 and can bear about 150 house lots. The deal, negotiated by Knight Frank agents Stephen Kelly, Danny Clark and Yvonne Zhou, was struck at about $86,000 a lot. Mr Kelly said a Malaysian group beat eight other offers for the site which is in a Precinct Structure Plan (PSP).
The price is significantly less than the $300,000 a lot achieved recently for land in Leakes Road, Tarneit, but it’s a serious premium on the property’s 1983 purchase price of $57,500. Located off Exford Road, the property is close to Lendlease’s Atherstone estate and near Melton train station and the Western Freeway. It has been used as a horse paddock for the past 35 years and is one suburb further out than Rockbank where land has been selling for between $100,000 and $110,000, Mr Kelly said.
‘‘
We think the upward trend for Melton South will - Stephen Kelly continue
’’
“But Rockbank is pretty much done and Melton South is closer to the station. People are already getting pushed out of Rockbank,” he said. “This is a growth story and we think the upward trend for Melton South and
Bacchus Marsh will continue,” he said. While the Melton South land is considered a horse paddock, north-east in Beveridge, a 600-hectare, third-generation cattle farm, Deloraine Park is on the market at 500 Old Hume Highway. Biggin & Scott Land is marketing the property as a potential 6000-lot estate and is expecting about $160 million. Savills is also expecting more than $50 million for a 76-hectare block in Gisborne. – The Age

Rare opportunity to help Scouts A Melton Scout troop needs 60 carnivorous volunteers to help with its latest fundraiser. The 2nd Melton Scouts group will host a meat sampling event on Friday, April 27, to raise money to help get its member to next year’s jamboree and for new toilets at its Blackwood Drive hall. Meat lovers are being sought to register for steak testing and to fill out a survey for market researcher Tastepoint.
The troop will get $1000 for every 60 volunteers who participate. Event co-ordinator Lita Tirkkonen said it was one of a number of initiatives that the Scouts are running to reach their goals. “We’re fundraising for Jamboree 2019 because we have a group of kids that want to go to South Australia for that and it will cost about $1600 a child and $1500 per leader,” Ms Tirkkonen said.
Upgrades to the Scout hall’s toilet facilities are expected to cost about $50,000. Other fundraising efforts being undertaken by the Melton troop include sausage sizzles, Christmas trees sales, a colour run, discos and a wine drive. Information about the meat test session: litat@bigpond.com.au
Melton’s over 65s can get a more potent vaccine for free to protect them this coming flu season. Health services in the area are gearing up for their annual flu vaccine campaigns following the country’s worst season last year with about 29,000 hospital admissions and 745 influenza-related deaths. General practitioner Alastair Stark, of Westcare Medical Centre, is encouraging older residents to see their doctors to get the new high potency vaccine next month to ensure they are covered for the coming months. “It is often a very unpleasant and debilitating illness that lasts seven to 10 days – it’s not just a cold,” Dr Stark said. “At worst it can be life-threatening, even to healthy young people. “The vaccines we have are safe, cheap and effective. “This is a preventable illness. “We also need to protect the most vulnerable, including the very young, very old or unwell and we can do that by vaccinating not only those people but ourselves.” Dr Stark said most residents over 65 years are recommended to get a new trivalent vaccine, free from their doctors, to protect them from three strains of the virus. Children of all ages are also strongly encouraged to have a vaccine nowadays, particularly children under five years who, for the first time, can get a free vaccine, he said. Esther Lauaki

Rockbank switches on to NBN By Esther Lauaki Rockbank residents can now access high-speed internet via the National Broadband Network. About 280 homes and businesses in Rockbank are expected to switch on to the network. Ebony Aitken, the network’s head for Victoria and Tasmania, said people living and working in Rockbank should contact their preferred phone and internet provider to
discuss their internet usage and find a package to suit their needs. “Many people living in parts of Rockbank can now connect to a plan over the NBN access network, which is great news for local households and businesses,” Ms Aitken said. “For the first time, local residents also have a choice of speeds when selecting a broadband package – people should ask their phone and internet provider about the actual speeds they can expect to experience when they switch to a
plan over the NBN access network, particularly during peak times.” She said it was important to remember that making the switch was not automatic. “To continue using your landline and internet services, you’ll need to contact your preferred phone and internet provider to place an order,” Ms Aitken said. “Connecting to a plan … means the whole house can enjoy access to the benefits of fast internet such as on-demand entertainment
options, access to online learning tools and the ability to work remotely. “The rollout of the NBN access network is one of the biggest transformations to happen to Australia’s telecommunications industry. “We’re working hard with the industry to provide access to the best broadband experience possible and to help everyone better understand what factors influence their broadband speeds.” Information: www.nbnco.com.au
Cottrell corridor vital link A $5000 community grant will help the Pinkerton Landcare and Environment Group maintain a vital wildlife corridor at Mt Cottrell and nurture the bird population in the area. The group received one of only four national community grants made by Birdlife Australia earlier this year to aid the development and maintenance of a wildlife corridor called Pinkerton Link. Indigenous trees and grasses were planted to create the wildlife corridor six years ago, with group president Daryl Akers saying members are now enjoying the fruits of their labour. “Bird surveys have recorded an increase in the number of endangered and threatened bird species in the area, proving that the corridor is contributing to local wildlife and providing them with valuable food and shelter,” Mr Akers said. “The corridor links Mulla Mulla Grasslands with Pinkerton Forest, which predate European settlement and are endangered ecological areas of national significance.
“The indigenous plants in the wildlife corridor will provide food and protection to native wildlife, which travel between the forest and the grasslands.” He said that the grant meant that volunteers would be able to carry out more planting. “PLEG is attempting to restore these two areas to their original state, before European settlement, by removing introduced plants and only planting flora which is local to the area,” Mr Akers said. “We’ll be planting more trees, shrubs, and we will be cleaning out a lot of weeds because of native grasses seeding in the area. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done over quite a large area, so this grant enables us to do that.” Details: pinkertonforest.com Esther Lauaki Tom (front), Annabelle and Evelyn, and (at back) Inna, Bronwyn Akers, Daryl Akers and Frances Overmans. More jail time for riot prisoner By Ewen McRae A man who took part in a riot at the Ravenhall Correctional Centre in 2015 had his sentence extended by 18 months in the County Court recently. Van Tung Nguyen, who is serving five years for trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine and a number of firearm offences, would have been eligible for parole in June this year if not for his role in the riot which caused nearly $20 million in damages to the facility and has been described as the biggest in Victoria’s correctional history. The genesis of the riot was a no-smoking policy which was to begin in all Victorian prisons on July 1, 2015. It had been the subject of peaceful protests in the lead-up to the date. The court heard that at 11.40am on June 30, about 120 prisoners gathered near the intersection of three yards at the Ravenhall centre, chanting for tobacco. The prisoners kicked and pulled down fences separating the yards, forcing prison management to withdraw all staff from the area. Nguyen helped to breach one of the fences at noon. He was seen on CCTV soon after helping other rioters to break through the gate into the central movement control (CMC) area. Over the next four hours, footage showed Nguyen discharging a fire hose around the yard, destroying cameras, breaking up rocks that were thrown at police officers and aiding other prisoners in the riot. The final footage of Nguyen was at 4.43pm but the riot continued
until 11pm. Nguyen pleaded guilty to participating in the riot. In her sentencing remarks, Judge Lisa Hannan said that the seriousness of the riot necessitated a strong response. “Globally, this was a serious example of this offence, having regard to the level of threat and violence and the fear created, the scale of destruction, the setting and the fact that you acted against law enforcement personnel seeking to discharge their duties,” Judge Hannan said.
‘‘
This offending had both acute and long-term - Lisa Hannan consequences
’’
“I accept that you were not engaged in planning or organisation of the riot, nor were you directing others what to do, but you were, in my view, from an early stage … an enthusiastic participant. “What is clear is that this offending had both acute and long-term consequences upon many of the victims who describe being terrified, traumatised, frightened. Many have sought professional assistance, others have ongoing physical symptoms which have rippled throughout their lives in terms of both their work and their personal lives.” Judge Hannan sentenced Nguyen to 18 months imprisonment, with nine months to be served cumulatively upon his previous sentence.

Lions help cancer fight The call has gone out for support for Taylors Lakes Lions Club’s charity gala dinner to raise money to help fight childhood cancer. The club will host its first gala dinner fundraiser at Taylors Lakes next month with all proceeds going to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Taylors Lakes Lions’ secretary Phil Clinkaberry said supporting the foundation was very important to the club and fitted well with its values. “As a club, we have a number of key priorities that we support and those include two in particular – health and young people,” Mr Clinkaberry said. “Our aim for this event is to raise as much as we can for the Australian
Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, which donates 100 per cent of funds raised to finding a cure for all childhood cancers – a cause that I know many would see as a most worthwhile and valuable one. Our initial target is $1500, but we reckon with the community’s help we can go beyond that.” Extra fundraising activities, such as a raffle and a silent auction, will be held on the night. The Taylors Lakes Lions Club gala dinner will be held on Friday, May 25, at Taylors Lakes Hotel from 7.30pm. Tickets: lionstaylorslakes.secretary@ hotmail.com Esther Lauaki

Bullied teen takes a stand A Caroline Springs teenager has turned a harrowing experience into the catalyst for change. Monique Mastrobattista, 14, suffered at the hands of bullies after transferring to a new school in 2016 and said the experience had a lasting affect on her. “I had a very bad case of bullying in 2016. I moved to a new school and didn’t know anyone and got really badly bullied,” she said. “I developed really bad anxiety from it and had a really bad stutter.” However, instead of letting the experience haunt her, Ms Mastrobattista has used it as an opportunity to start a bigger conversation. “I was seeing a psychologist and since I couldn’t talk, she told me to write down my feelings. “As I was writing these feelings down, it slowly started to turn into something bigger.” From Ms Mastrobattista’s notes emerged My Discreet Bully, an illustrated book which provides an insight into the scourge of bullying. “It’s based on my own experience so it wasn’t very difficult for me to write,” she said. “After that, we contacted an illustrator, a publishing company and things started to happen. Now the book is here, we’re trying to get it into as many schools as we possibly can.” Since releasing her book, Ms Mastrobattista, who is now homeschooled, has taken her message to schools around Victoria and even overseas. “I’ve gone into a few schools in Victoria and done a bit of a talk with the students, answered questions and done some signings – I think it really made a difference that these students were being spoken to by a younger person and not an adult,” she said. “I actually had the

mother of one boy send me a message saying she hasn’t seen him this happy in a long time and the talk really helped. “That absolutely made my day, if this even helps just one person it’s all worthwhile.” Ms Mastrobattista has also started an online kindness campaign.
“Bullying isn’t just confined to the school, there’s a huge cyber bullying problem these days too,” she said. “This isn’t just a behavioral problem now and I think we need to find new ways to tackle it or it will continue to grow.” My Discreet Bully is available in book stores and on online at www.getkind.net
Southern Rural Water is warning residents to avoid swimming, fishing and coming into contact with water at Melton Reservoir due to a potentially toxic bluegreen algae outbreak. Monitoring has detected an algae bloom, which can be dangerous to humans and animals. Blue-green algae can cause skin rashes or itchiness; sore eyes, ears and nose; or if swallowed, gastroenteritis, nausea or vomiting. Water from Melton Reservoir should not be used for drinking, cooking or other domestic uses. Boiling the affected water will not make it safe. Signs have been placed in the area to warn people of the hazards. Southern Rural Water will continue to monitor the situation and will remove warning signs when the water is considered safe. People who come into direct contact with contaminated water should wash immediately in fresh water or seek medical advice if symptoms persist. Sena Senbey

Plenty of appeal in Anzac badges
By Tate Papworth
(Joe Mastroianni)
A Sunshine Hospital midwife swapped the birthing suite for running track to claim second place in this year’s Stawell Gift. Pamela Austin ran her season-best time of 13.964 seconds to take the runner’s-up trophy behind winner Elizabeth Forsyth (13.685). The result ranks highly among Austin’s career achievements, but she admits it almost never came to be. “I actually hadn’t raced for four years,” she said. “I was a beauty therapist and went back to study midwifery for three years. I found that with studying and working, something had to give and it was my training, so I stopped racing.” But time away from the sport reignited Austin’s passion. “Last year, I went to my old coach’s house to watch the Gift and I was nearly crying,” she said. “It really ignited the fire in the belly again.” While she had strong belief that she’d still be able to compete at the top level, Austin said her rapid success was a shock. “I did my first meet at Sandringham in November and made the final there and that gave me some confidence,” she said. “Leading into Stawell, I knew I was in the mix, but I didn’t think I’d make the final, which was my main goal. “Crossing the line first in my semi-final was my dream come true, but crossing the line in second place in the final was beyond belief.” The unexpected success has left her hungry to go one better next year. “I’ve got about a month off now, then I’ll be starting up training again,” she said. “My dream came true last week, but winning the Gift would top that dream. I’m certainly going to try again.”
Melton RSL organisers are gearing up for the 2018 Anzac Appeal. Veterans and volunteers will be selling Anzac badges in the community to raise vital funds for men and women who have served their country. Melton RSL president Ian Lawrey said he is confident the Melton community will once again generously support the RSL’s annual Anzac Appeal. “Our RSL volunteers, many of them veterans, are ready to offer a variety of Anzac Appeal badges,” he said. “The high level of energy and commitment shown by our sub-branch volunteers as they raise the much-needed funds is truly humbling. “Each and every volunteer is determined to get into the community and not only sell Anzac Appeal badges, but to share their stories and experiences.” RSL Victoria appeals manager Peter Smith said assistance will be provided in a variety of forms. “It can include assistance such as medical bills, emergency home repairs, food vouchers and relief from social isolation,” he said. Badges can be purchased from your local RSL sub-branch, volunteer collectors in the community and shopping centres. Sena Senbey

MY PLACE Bruce Carboon has a deep connection with Moorabool. He talks to Esther Lauaki about how he makes his mark. What is your connection to Melton/ Moorabool?
to organising a 50th year celebration for the society. We are also working on a project that will upgrade our computer systems to help us in registering/cataloguing items and improve access to our important archive of documents and information on artefacts.
I have a long association with the area and descend from a long line of brick makers and farmers. My great-great-grandfather William Thomas Wittick was a brick maker who moved here in the 1880s from Richmond and discovered the firebrick clay on Bald Hill. Over the years there was a succession of managers with the surname Wittick at the Darley Fire Brick Company. Recently I also discovered that descendants from my father’s side of the family managed a cheese factory in Bacchus Marsh as well. So between bricks and cheese I have it covered. I have a great number of family and friends in Melton/Moorabool shires.
What would people be surprised to know about you? When I was young, at the beach one summer I was jabbed by the barb of a stingray. I recall it vividly, my foot swelled up like a football and I couldn’t walk on it all summer. I’m sure there are not many people who can claim that. I also partake in some professional film and television acting from time to time What is the best thing about living in Melton/ Moorabool?
How long have you lived in the area?
(Marco De Luca)
I have been visiting the area since I was born, but only settled here mid-2014. I bought a house in Bacchus Marsh. What are you passionate about? I have many passions and the following stand out – my fondness for performance, theatre and films, history and travel. Now I’m not working full-time I have been extremely fortunate to pursue all of my interests. I’m also passionate in using the skills I have acquired over my life in contributing back into the community. You are the president of the Moonlite Community Theatre Group, how did you become involved? When I first came to the area I was surprised
by the lack of any community performing arts group. I have lived in many places across the state and most of them always had both community theatre for plays and musicals. It came as a bit of a shock – so something needed to be done. Do you wear any other hats in the community? In the short period of time that I have been in Melton/Moorabool I have been so fortunate in
ONE STOP DOORS NOW OPEN
The communities are growing so quickly and becoming more diverse and changing. I believe this is for the better as long as we can keep pace with the infrastructure. Apart from more support for all the arts, it would be great to have a dedicated community performance space for Melton/Moorabool.

One word – lifestyle. We have the benefits of country living with city trappings. I’m a boy from the country and I love the quick access to both the country and the beaches we have living in Melton/Moorabool, but we are also close to the city and the airport if we need to escape. It’s an ideal location really.

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
North West delivers diverse delights By Ewen McRae The Pacific North West, something of a hidden gem, is worth adding to your travel bucket list. Head up the west coast from the tourist hot-spots in California and you’ll find Portland, Seattle and Vancouver – three cities with plenty to offer any traveller. Portland is fast becoming a food and drink mecca in the US thanks to interesting restaurants, craft breweries and a bohemian feel. The vision of the city portrayed in cult sketch comedy series Portlandia is easy to recognise, while one walk around the Hawthorne District will give you an insight into what the city is about. A must for any visitor is a visit to Powell’s Books, followed by a look around the restored Baghdad Theatre across the road. Both are icons of Portland. Sitting outside the theatre and watching the eclectic crowds at the artistic hub of the city is one of the charms of the area. On the food side, a visit to Salt & Straw is mandatory. There you’ll get ice-cream with a difference. Sure, there’s your standard chocolate or strawberry, but why not branch out with pear and blue cheese, strawberry balsamic and black pepper, or avocado and chocolate fudge? Did I mention Portland is a bit quirky? There’s a plethora of organic and home-style restaurants across the city, and every sector of the city has its own distinct flavour. If you want to work off some of your culinary gorgings, take a bus up to Forest Park and have a stroll through the pine forest. Walking tracks provide great views of the city, and while it’s only just outside the centre of town, the tranquility of the national park
delivers a feel of real isolation. A definite tick for nature lovers. A drive up the highway and is one of my favourite cities, Seattle – birthplace of grunge music and Starbucks, but offering so much more. As far as tourist sights go, two of the best are a stone’s throw from each other – the Museum of Pop Culture and the iconic Space Needle. The museum nods to Seattle’s vibrant music
past that includes Nirvana, Soundgarden and Jimmi Hendrix, as well as a rotating roster of exhibits to showcase all manner of pop culture delights. If you’re a lover of music, this is a must; if you’re a musician yourself, you can head upstairs to play on instruments. Just next door is the Space Needle, built in 1962 and offering the best views of the city. It, too, is a must.
Be sure to head to Pike Market, one of the largest permanent markets in the US, while a history tour through Seattle’s underground will not disappoint. If you visit at the right time of year, I’d recommend trying to see the Seahawks play in the NFL. The city is awash with their colours all year around, but the live experience is something you’ll remember long after departing the city. The stadium is designed to

be one of the loudest in the world, while the city takes great pride in having the most fervent fans in the land. Continuing north will take you across the border, into Canada and its biggest west coast city, Vancouver. Trendy and friendly are the two words I would use to describe this city, with one walk through the centre of the city showcasing both. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and a gateway to the nearby snowfields, Vancouver is a melting pot of things to do. If Portland didn’t give you enough craft beer there is an entire market for it on Granville Island and plenty of good local produce to help soak up the hops. A trip to Canada must include plenty of poutine, the national dish of chips, gravy and cheese curds, with lots of variations on that theme. Find your favourite on any corner. Stanley Park, just outside the city, has a number of fantastic walking tracks, with wildlife such as ducks and beavers to gaze upon. A walk off the beaten track had me feeling like I’d stepped into Narnia. Make the effort one morning to get up early and try out one of the city’s breakfast or brunch spots, where too much maple syrup is never enough. The lines outside Jam Cafe tell the whole story and it is worth the wait. Vancouver nightlife has a little for everyone, from upscale clubs to cute cocktail lounges and grungy dive bars. Each section of the city has a different style, so do your research before heading out or you could be in for a long walk to find your style of bar. Above all else in Canada, talk to the locals. They’re so helpful and love helping out visitors. Enjoy your travels!

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes a 180 on vegetarian food at this funky cafe At Consider The Sauce HQ, we figure if we ever went completely meat-free, our diet would be based mostly around the foods of the Mediterranean – African, European, Middle-Eastern. Your actual “vegetarian food”? Not so much. Yes, we are cynical about such stuff. Some of that is down to probably unfair baggage and previous bad experiences. Why have any truck with such food when the various national cuisines deliver meat-free food so effortlessly and with such delicious panache? No doubt that’s why we’ve gone so long without trying Eka Wholefoods. And why, after ordering, we are a mix of anticipation and crossed fingers. We need not have had any fears, as what we lunch on is very fine. The joint is the expected mix of one half wholefoods of many kinds and one half gorgeous cafe, a tranquil space in which we enjoy stopping for a while. Bennie loved his bao tempeh sliders ($12.90). The crispy, but seemingly rather salty, tempeh dances with organic kimchi, house-made peri-peri sauce, grilled shiitake mushrooms and caramelised onion. This pretty food goes down a treat. My soba noodle salad ($16.50) is even better. Joining the organic noodles are cherry tomatoes, chopped toasted almonds, black sesame seeds, cinnamon-crusted organic tofu

and a sesame-lemon dressing. This salad is expertly done and a pleasure to consume. We depart without trying the good-looking range of sweet treats but with some brown rice and tamari in hand. It’s been wonderful to have our skepticism so wonderfully rendered daft.

When asked what he loves best about being owner of Harvey Norman Furniture at Watergardens, Binh Nguyen is quick with a response: “Meeting the locals in my culturally diverse patch.” Binh, 35, has been with Harvey Norman for more than eight years, gaining loads of invaluable experience in Melbourne and Sydney stores. “I started in Maribyrnong, moved to Chadstone and then packed up to help run Sydney’s Caringbah before relocating to the flagship Auburn store,” he says. “A couple of years ago, my wife and I returned to our hometown Melbourne, this time with a littlie in tow. “I felt immediately at home in the Watergardens store and I’ve loved getting to know my community, listening to what they need and presenting solutions.” “We have an exciting mix of customers and that can present the types of challenges I get a buzz
from. It might be a young couple, with a tight budget, looking for a sofa to see them through the renting years. Or it might be a family looking for a statement piece for their new home. “All our staff have the knowledge, expertise and experience to help guide that couple to the right choice. Our team have the latest trends at their fingertips and understand how to put together the right look.” “Whether people need a new dining setting or something else to give their home a fresh look, there are ways to introduce a new decor item to achieve the biggest bang for buck. “We can help with ideas – that’s what we’re all about.” Harvey Norman Furniture Watergardens, 450 Melton Highway, Taylors Lakes. High quality built-in cabinetry, light fittings, ducted heating and cooling and a big backyard seal the deal.

The kitchen has been renovated and over-sized burnt yellow splashback tiling set against off-white contemporary cabinetry with stone benchtops looks chic. The original hardwood floors tie it all together. Outside the ’50s-era window frames have been painted white which instantly updates the feel and offers inspiration to further modernise. The backyard is large, with a pergola and a large steel garage/work shed.

Second call! SOLD!
FOR SALE
We were so impressed with Rachel, with the sale of our first property (an auction sale). So when we decided to sell our second property (this time a private sale), we did not hesitate to call her again. We found Rachel to be knowledgeable, resourceful, approachable, honest and trust-worthy; all the qualities you would look for in an agent. We felt well looked after by Rachel and the rest of her team and colleagues at Harcourts. We now have her number saved in our “favourites” and would not hesitate to call her again if we were to sell another property

SPORT Rams’ stunning victory By Tara Murray Rockbank pulled off an upset win against Melton Centrals to start the Riddell District Netball League season. In wet and windy conditions, not ideal for netball, it was the Rams who started the better of the two teams. Out by seven goals at quarter-time, it was the first quarter that proved the difference. As the rain disappeared, Centrals continued to attack and reduced the margin, but couldn’t get any closer than three goals, losing 44-41. Rams coach Lizzy Masterson was thrilled with the win. “They kept coming at us, but we held tight and stuck to what we had done all pre-season,” she said. “We got lucky in the last quarter. “It’s the first time the club [A-grade side] has ever beaten Centrals, we’re really excited.” Masterson said the difference early on was shooter Rebecca Hicks. Hicks, who joined the Rams in the off season, finished with 38 goals from 44 and proved a tall target in the shooting circle. She said her shooting accuracy was also a key, with the two Centrals shooters struggling at times. Mel Laird moved back into goal keeper after quarter-time and restricted Hicks slightly. Defender Danni Jane Umaki was named best on court for the Rams. She started at goal defence, before moving back into goal keeper. Masterson said it wasn’t easy in defence, with Bec Morabito keeping Centrals in the game, while the Rams suffered injuries. “Mary [Brodie], who was our goal defence all of last season, was only on for a minute and half when she popped her calf again, that was hard for us. “Jess [Herron], who smashed it in the first quarter as goal keeper, has done something to her knee.” Morabito was Centrals’ best, shooting 19 goals from 26 attempts. Last season the Rams only beat Woodend-Hesket and Sunbury Kangaroos which were in the bottom part of the ladder. “For us as a club, we now know we will challenge some of the better teams,” Masterson said. “We’re not out there to make the granny, while it would be nice, we’re aiming to make finals, anything goes the year after.” Meanwhile, Romsey and Diggers Rest will have to wait another week to get their seasons under way. The two sides were due to do battle on Saturday night in both the netball and football at Romsey Park, but the matches were postponed after fallen power lines cut power to the ground. Wallan won the other match played on Saturday, defeating Broadford 39-38.

Springers in big derby win Caroline Springs had the better of Melton in the first local derby in Hockey Victoria’s Vic League 2 competition. The newly promoted Springers dominated the scoreboard on the way to a 7-0 win. Springers’ coach Ron Shadbolt said he was happy with the first-up performance. “We had quite a number of players playing Vic League 2 for the first time and not everyone was available,” he said. “The game was played in good spirit. We stuck to the game plan for most of the game. We fell away for a few minutes, but that’s to be expected when they haven’t played together before.” Laura Brown scored a hat trick for the Springers. Shadbolt said they would only get better as the team got used to playing at the higher level. “They’ll get a better understanding of each other and they’ll improve with the run. “We now face the team we beat in last year’s grand final. “The next six to seven weeks we will be tested as we get reacquainted with this level.” In other results, Caroline Springs’ second women’s side won 2-1 against Sunshine in metro B west, while the men’s metro A north west side lost 3-2 to Footscray and their men’s metro B west side lost 6-1 to Essendon. Melton’s Vic League 3 men’s side lost 6-2 to Swinburne. Tara Murray

Disappointing Sharks look to regroup Hillside put in a below par performance and was made to pay by Craigieburn in Essendon District Football League division 1. While only one point separated the two teams at three-quarter time in the round one clash, the Sharks weren’t happy with their performance. The mood didn’t get any better, as the Eagles kicked four goals to one in the final term to seal the 14.12 (96)-9.6 (60) win. Sharks football manager Darren Mantanyan said it was a disappointing game where they were outplayed. He said it was windy for the first half, before it dropped away in the third quarter when the Sharks were kicking that way, and then picked up again in the last quarter. “It wasn’t what we wanted,” he said. “They were up and about after not winning a game in premier division last season. “It was below par for us. We didn’t move 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 17, 2018
the ball forward with purpose and we didn’t compete. “We went away from our basic structures in the heat of the moment. Craigieburn was really good and will beat a lot of sides.” Mantanyan said Lachlan Rayner, Julian Hemala, Riza Gashi and Harry Charters were the best in the loss. The Sharks sit 1-1 after taking home the win against Taylors Lakes in the division 1 opener on Good Friday. Mantanyan said they hadn’t played their best football in the first two rounds. “On Good Friday we played a good first quarter and the game was even after that. “We’re still building and we don’t want to play our best football until later in the year. “We just need to be more competitive than we were on Saturday.” The Sharks face Oak Park on Saturday before a week off the following weekend.
Westmeadows, Taylors Lakes and Tullamarine were the other winners in round one. Meanwhile in division 2, Burnside Heights started its season with a loss to East Sunbury. The Bears, who had a bye in round one, trailed at every break, as the Thunder ran away with the win, 11.16 (82)-6.3 (39). The Bears this week face Hadfield. Roxburgh Park and Northern Saints were the other winners. In premier division, Maribyrnong Park, Aberfeldie, Greenvale, Glenroy and Keilor had wins. Tara Murray

New Stanley Shield adds spice to Melton derby Melton and Melton South will have an extra reason to win in the opening round of the Ballarat Football League season. Encounters don’t come much bigger for either club as they vie for the upper hand in football and netball. As well, the senior football sides will play for the Darren Stanley Shield for the first time. Bloods president Greg Davis came up with the medal initiative, which was then supported by the Panthers. Stanley played all his junior football at Melton South, before captaining and coaching the senior side. He then moved to Melton, playing in two premierships. He won two Henderson Medals as best player in the BFL, one with each club. Stanley will present the shield after the game. The clubs’ reserves sides already play for the Phil Littlewood Memorial Trophy. Bloods football manager Brad Jamison said they were looking forward to the game.
“It’s a good rivalry between the two clubs,” he said. “It’s healthy for both clubs and it’s the biggest match of the year for supporters and crowd numbers. “There’s a hype for this match and hopefully MacPherson Park will be full of supporters.” The Bloods will be holding their past player day on Saturday and they’re hoping that celebration will get a few more people to the ground. Jamison said the Bloods had put in a strong off season on the track, with more than 80 players training at some stages. He said they hadn’t gone out and recruited a lot of players, instead bringing a number of VFL players into the team. Brock Kennedy, Jordyn Cotter and Billy Crofts are back at the club after being with VFL club Werribee last year. “Liam Carter, who is with Williamstown, has played a couple of practice matches and
Melton captains Braedan Kight and Ben Archard and Melton South captain Shaun White with the Darren Stanley Shield. Shawn Smits)
Mark Orr, who is with Coburg, has played one as well,” Jamison said. “With the development league not running, we haven’t had to go out and recruit.”
Centrals work the wind By Tara Murray Melton Centrals overcame windy conditions to open their Riddell District Football League season on a high on Saturday. The strong wind meant the ball spent more than 90 per cent of the game in one half of the ground and Centrals made the most of their opportunities against Rockbank. Neither side kicked a goal in the first quarter. With the wind advantage in the second quarter Centrals kicked five goals. The Rams kicked the only goal of the third quarter. Centrals put their foot down in the last, kicking eight to win 13.14 (92)-1.5 (11). Centrals coach Mathew Sproule said he was happy with a win in conditions that didn’t suit their game-style. “We thought we would win comfortably as we know Rockbank has been struggling and we’re pretty happy with our list at the moment,” Sproule said. “We had a dominate game even when we were going against the wind, we should have kicked a few goals at that end as well. “I was pretty happy with the performance all day.” Sproule said their pressure around the contest was the most pleasing aspect of the game as they had worked hard on that area during the off season. “Our tackling and intensity were the best part,” he said. “It’s probably not our strongest point as we don’t have too many inside mids, so to do that and compete really well in that area is great. “We’ve got a team that can play on this ground and our tackling pressure should be up. We were able to get some turnovers and we’ve got some handy forwards who can kick some goals as well.” Dylan Weir kicked five goals on debut for Centrals. He and former Deer Park player Bosko Micevski are the two key recruits up forward for Centrals. “I coached Dylan at Port Arlington and I’m rapt he has come down and he’s loving it as well,” Sproule said. “Bobby [Bosko] didn’t get a lot of goals, but was good in the second quarter at centre half-forward. “It frees up Jimmy Aquilina, who has been playing full forward. Means he gets the third defender.” Sproule said Blake Henderson in the ruck was best on ground, while Michael Callus, Lloyd Briggs, Cooper Pepi and 16-year-old Lachlan Phillips were also handy contributors. The Rams face Woodend-Hesket on Saturday night in the first night game at Gilbert Gordon Reserve. Both sides had big wins in round one.
Matt Denham, who returns from Bacchus Marsh, is the other big signing. The Bloods aren’t expecting to see former Essendon player Elliott Kavanagh on the ground though, with work commitments meaning he is unlikely to play this season. Braedan Kight and Ben Archard will captain the side this year, voted in by the playing group. Jamison said the two skippers complemented each other. “Braedan has been around for a while having, been a junior at the club,” Jamison said. “He was named in the Ballarat team of the year. “Ben played his first year with us last year and won our best and fairest. He’s been a great addition on and off the field.” The football action will start at 9.55am and the netball at 9am. Tara Murray

Ballarat Football League side Bacchus Marsh has parted ways with forward Jarrah Maksymow. In a statement on the club’s Facebook page, the club said personal issues had arisen that meant that Maksymow’s commitment to the club and teammates had waned. After discussions, the two parties decided going separate ways was the best move forward. Maksymow joined the club in 2016 and was part of the premiership that year. Last year, the club suspended him from senior football for failing to meet team commitments. He missed the grand final after being suspended by the league for a head butt in a semi-final. The Cobras kick off their season this Saturday, taking on local rival Darley in a grand final replay.
Soccer
Spring Hills had a hard-fought victory under lights against Melbourne City in FFV state league 4 west. The Stallions led 1-0 at half-time, before City levelled the scores. The Stallions found the winner late for a 2-1 win. It was the Stallions’ first victory of the season, after a draw and bye. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix lost to Lara United 4-1.
Cricket
Tristan Francis has been appointed Eynesbury’s captain-coach for next year’s Gisborne and District Cricket Association campaign. Francis, a strong top-order batsman, takes over the reins for Luke and Hayden Castle, who were coach and captain respectively this season. The Eagles’ top side finished fourth in its first season in the GDCA.
WRFL
Lachlan Phillips is one of Centrals up-and-coming players. (Shawn Smits)
“We’re pretty confident on closing the gap on everyone, but we don’t know how that will reflect with wins,” Sproule said. Meanwhile, Romsey and Diggers Rest will have to wait another week to get their seasons under way. The two sides were due to do battle on
Saturday night in both the netball and football at Romsey Park, but the matches were postponed after fallen power lines cut power to the ground. Wallan came away with the points in the other match, easily accounting for Broadford, 19.10 (124)-4.3 (27).
Caroline Springs started its season with a strong win against Albion in Western Region Football League division 1. The Lakers jumped out of the blocks and led 48-0 at quarter-time. That was a sign of things to come for the rest of the day, with the Lakers winning 17.13 (115)-5.10 (40). Recruits Josh Mellington and Rex Hickman kicked nine goals between them, while Jordan Doering was named best on ground. To Aussies, a stinger is a nasty sea creature; the deadly box jellyfish, to be precise. Recently a new ‘animal’ was added to the lexicon and it is neither nasty nor deadly. The Stinger fastback sports sedan is touted by some as being the South Korean automaker’s Commodore and Kia Motors Australia chief operating officer Damien Meredith, says he is confident the Stinger has the attributes which will endear it to Australian drivers across a wide demographic. Mated with Kia’s own eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels via a mechanical limited-slip differential, the latter gives the car its high-performance pedigree with a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, using launch control, and a top speed of 270 km/h. Two engines are offered, more on these later. Each engine grade comes in three specification levels - S, Si and GT-Line for the 2.0-litre and S, Si and GT for the 3.3-litre. On test was the Stinger 330Si. If the Stinger bears a strong resemblance in profile to the modern European sports sedan it is no coincidence as the Kia design chief Peter Schreyer once held a lofty design post at German automobile maker Audi. And Gregory Guillaume, Kia Europe’s chief designer, through his passion for the gran turismo cars he admired as a child, played no small part in the evolution of the Stinger from the original GT Concept. With designers opting for an elegant, athletic look as opposed to aggressive and brutal proportions, the Stinger, together with its rear-drive set-up, delivers a spacious passenger cabin and large boot capable of carrying two full-size pieces of luggage or golf bags.

Patrol is still king of the road By Vani Naidoo Nissan has given its two-model Patrol range a little pep both inside and out. Little things, mind you, but considered approaches to keep its largest SUV positioned as a value proposition. And let’s not forget fun. With this Nissan Patrol, big is definitely better. The Patrol is a hard vehicle to miss, as much for its presence as its size. Nissan has updated this loveable beast with a new bumper and grille pairing, as well as revised triangular foglight housings and distinguishing 18-inch alloys. The look is bold and brassy with slightly softened edges to appeal to the townsfolk. The Patrol announces itself with ease – at 5.1m long and 2.0m wide it has that luxury – although the front end is a touch more fashionable than a flat rear marked by a rather interesting light combination. The Patrol’s size translates into one of the roomiest cabins we have seen for a while with oodles of head and leg room for all passengers, even if those in the third row may need to be slighter in stature. You will have to use the sidesteps to enter and exit but it is easily done and adds to the experience. Lodgings for those in the front seats are most comfortable of course, thanks to good support, easily adjustable pews and great storage options. The interior is more subdued than you would expect despite a good standard of fixtures and finishing. It comes with generous inclusions and boot space that proves very useful even

with all three rows in use. The outer seats of the second row fold and tumble for access to the third with the latter able to move forward and aft for increased leg or storage room. The second row, too, can be folded if you need to haul large items but doesn’t fold flush so keep that in mind. We liked that the storage bin in the centre console can be accessed by passengers in the second row, that there are roof mounted air vents and cleverly thought out spaces for water bottles, bags and all those essentials we don’t seem to be able to live without these days. Our entry-model Patrol Ti came superbly equipped with keyless entry, eight-way

Nissan has updated this large, loveable beast with a new bumper and grille. (Pictures: Supplied)
powered seats, sunroof, auto headlights and rain-sensing wipers as well as tri-zone climate control, sat-nav, sidesteps and a six-speaker sound system with CD player (yes, really). The Patrol Ti gets an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen with an infotainment system that has been upgraded to be much more intuitive. Bluetooth connectivity is great as is the 9Gb hard-drive, accessible USB charging ports and
four 12V outlets. No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto though, which some drivers may miss. Patrol Ti-L gets two 8.0-inch DVD screens in the second row which is an advantage with children and long trips. This Nissan Patrol comes with a 5.6-litre V8 engine only. Hold on to your breeches because that V8 unit moves the Patrol along in ridiculously exciting fashion. Despite its
size and 2.7-tonne weight, this is a very easy drive. The high ride is great for forward and side visibility with the Patrol easy enough to manoeuvre in the city or on the open road. Perhaps the only downer for the Patrol is its great thirst for the premium petrol. Official figures of 14L/100km are nigh on impossible to replicate in the real world with our week hovering closer to 18L/100km. A large 140-litre
tank helps to some degree but that is $200 a pop to fill. We super-loved our week in the Patrol. It is comfortable and easy to drive and has the space and off-road nous that many families need. True, it is hardly the environmental poster-child but it is great fun and a disruptor for the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Discovery. Well, it should be.
