Anzac Day commemorations will be especially poignant this year as the public is invited to place white crosses on the Melton Civic Centre lawn to remember lost loved ones. Residents are encouraged to write the names of ex-servicemen and women on white crosses before placing them in a specially marked area on the lawn. Members of the Melton Men’s Sheds have been busy making the white crosses in readiness for the installation. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the initiative was a heartfelt tribute. “Anzac Day is an opportunity to take a second to remember those who fought for – and defended – our nation,” Cr Turner said. “This is just one way the community can come together to honour the fallen, and those who have done so much to make this country what it is today.” The crosses will be laid out to form a large cross until May 9. The installation is just one of many events happening across Melton and Moorabool to commemorate Anzac Day. Tyler Nesbit, John McKenzie-McHarg and Stephen Cook will join thousands of people attending dawn services in Melton, Caroline Springs, Bacchus Marsh and Diggers Rest. Bacchus Marsh RSL volunteers will be tin rattling and selling badges for the annual Anzac Appeal to raise money for veterans. RSL state president Robert Webster said almost one million badges will be distributed throughout Victoria alone this year. “These badges are distributed to our network of 285 sub-branches in every corner of the state; they then assemble their teams of local volunteers, often veterans, who spend hours selling in the streets of the community,” Mr Webster said. “The money we raise from the sale of Anzac Appeal badges helps current and former defence force personnel and their families.” Volunteers will be selling badges at Village Shopping Centre, outside Westpac Bank, IGA Darley and at railway stations or badges can be purchased at the Bacchus Marsh RSL. The white crosses are available for a gold coin donation from the Melton Library and Learning Hub, at the Melton Civic Centre or the Melton Visitor Information Centre. All proceeds go to the Partners of Veterans Association. For more information visit: www.melton. vic.gov.au/Anzac-day-crosses

Moorabool residents are being encouraged to have their say on the future of Ballan Recreation Reserve. The reserve’s draft master plan, out for public feedback until May 2, details proposed direction for the growth, usage and development of the reserve for the next 10 years. The document includes a review of current facilities and usage, analysis of future population growth to understand the impact on future uses of the reserve and an implementation plan for staged improvements. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said a community consultation survey found more than 80 per cent of those surveyed had used the reserve in the previous 12 months. Those who were not using the reserve listed the poor standard of facilities as the main reason. A council report tabled at this month’s meeting said that initial survey results provided key information for the preparation of the draft plan. “The findings formed part of the preliminary site analysis and have informed the draft master plan,” the report stated. “Feedback from this public exhibition period will then help inform the final draft master plan which will be presented for council adoption … on June 6.”

BEN CASS
12386118-RA18-18 10063363-12
A Hillside man is on a mission to get children away from the Xbox and out onto the basketball court. Ben Cass has been attaching nets to basketball rings across Brimbank and Melton and said the idea spawned from a trip overseas. “I went to the USA with my wife over Christmas and it struck me how every hoop over there has a net,” he said. “So I’ve started putting them up across our courts. I try to do one a weekend,” he said. Each net costs Mr Cass $15, but the money doesn’t bother him. “I’ve made it my business to drive past where I’ve put the nets up and the amount of people playing on those courts has definitely increased. “It not only adds to the aesthetics, but it also helps with the ball. If there’s no net the ball doesn’t catch and rolls well away.” Mr Cass created an online presence, The Net Project, and quickly amassed hundreds of followers, who were invited to vote on where the next net would be placed. However he’s recently run into trouble. “The Brimbank council has started taking down my nets, apparently it’s against their policy and poses a safety concern. “They told me someone could get their fingers caught in it or even their braces stuck.” Mr Cass said he was disappointed with the resistance and has vowed to follow protocol to get the nets back up. “I went along to the council meeting last week and they spent a lot of time speaking about sport and how they want to get people in Brimbank more active by providing them with better facilities and equipment. “That’s exactly what I’m doing.”

A 17-year-old has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life after allegedly leading police on a chase in the early hours of April 13. Officers received reports of a car being driven erratically in Darley just after midnight. Police said they tried to intercept the vehicle but a helicopter was called in instead of a pursuit for safety reasons. The teenager eventually parked in a driveway, where he surrendered himself to officers.

Soccer and cricket players are celebrating in Bacchus Marsh as a major upgrade to the lighting at Masons Lane Recreation Reserve has been unveiled. Bacchus Marsh Soccer Club shares the grounds with a range of sport and recreational groups including cricket and baseball clubs. The old portable lighting system only partially lit the sports ground and restricted training, caused crowding and damage to the main oval and a risk of injury to players. Western metropolitan MP Cesar Melhem flicked the switch to light up the ovals last week. “For too long, the soccer players and

Volunteers, don’t sit on the fence By Esther Lauaki Melton volunteers are rolling up their sleeves to rebuild fences destroyed in the recent bushfires near Cobden – but they need more hands on deck. Peat fires forced about 100 residents to evacuate their houses and three schools and a nursing home to relocate to escape toxic smoke as fires burned through farmland in the small town of Cobrico, between Terang and Cobden, last month. BlazeAid Inc, an organisation that helps out after natural disasters, has led the efforts to
rebuild fire-damaged properties. Police and Melton council are also extending a helping hand to the community and are calling for volunteers to join them. Melton Senior Sergeant Simon Payne said a call-out on social media attracted 27 volunteers who travelled to Cobden this week. A second group would be assembled to make the trip on May 1. “Police and the council came up with an idea of how we, as a semi-rural community, could assist the people down there in the country and we decided to support the BlazeAid initiative and send some volunteers along,” Senior
Sergeant Payne said. “We’ve had members of the public, council workers and a few police members nominate to go down and help out. “It’s an event that allowed people to give something to our country cousins and, hopefully the day never arrives but if it did in Melton, they would reciprocate the favour.” Volunteers will be helping BlazeAid and farmers to repair external fences and “hopefully help in rebuilding their lives for those who were affected by fire,” Senior Sergeant Payne said. Raise a cup of kindness Melton Country Club is brewing up something special for charity. The club will be doing its bit to raise money for the Cancer Council when it hosts its annual event for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on May 24. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, one of the Cancer Council’s most popular fundraisers, is aimed at getting friends, colleagues or community groups together over tea and treats to raise vital money for people affected by cancer. Event organiser Naomi Tobiasson said that last year’s morning tea raised more than $3700 for the cause. “It will be a great event this year and we hope to attract plenty of people,” Ms Tobiasson said. “About 100 people came to last year’s morning tea and this is another opportunity
for people to come on down to the Melton Country Club for an amazing morning tea. “We think it’s very important to give back to the community and all proceeds go to the Cancer Council.” She said donations of food, raffle prizes and money were welcome. Donate: bit.ly/2JYyNtX Esther Lauaki

Melton historian Judith Bilszta will run cemetery tours. (Dennis Manktelow)
From beyond the grave A Melton historian will uncover mysteries behind some of the municipality’s oldest gravestones as part of this month’s Heritage Festival. Judith Bilszta will guide two tours of Melton Cemetery, this Friday and Sunday. Ms Bilszta, who has conducted a number of talks on Melton cemetery, said she wanted to emphasise the significance of pioneer graves. “The cemetery was opened in 1861 following a big appeal from the town, because people at that stage were being taken to the city to be buried or they were being buried on private land,” she said. “There are significant graves there that should be brought to people’s attention because we
must honour those of the past who contributed so much to the development of the town, the district, the shire. “We’re inclined to forget that people did make a very significant path for the development of the town. “The Melton cemetery now has been completely revised since about the year 2000 … that opened up all the areas of the cemetery which were not used, and most of it is now full.” There are still places available for the Sunday (April 29) tour, which will run from 11am to noon. Booking are essential. Details: bit.ly/2HBJjbT Esther Lauaki

New boss for Djerriwarrh Health (Supplied)
By Esther Lauaki
BELINDA SCOTT
A strong focus on patient experience is high on the list of priorities for Djerriwarrh Health Service’s new chief executive. Belinda Scott, who has 25 years experience in the health sector, was appointed to the top job earlier this month. She will replace former chief Andrew Freeman, who stepped down in January to take on a role at Western Health. A registered nurse by profession, Ms Scott held a variety of different positions throughout her career, most recently at Northern Health.
Ms Scott said she looked forward to working with the staff and people of Melbourne’s west. “I look forward to commencing my new role at Djerriwarrh and to working with staff to ensure patients, residents, volunteers and visitors receive a level of care and attention that is second to none,” she said. Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator John Ballard said Ms Scott possessed a broad base of experience in delivering health care and had a strong focus on patient experience. “The cornerstone of any health service is strong, focused leadership and I am confident Belinda will provide this for Djerriwarrh,”
Dr Ballard said. “She is a highly experienced senior health administrator and I have no doubt she will provide excellent leadership for our highly-skilled and revitalised workforce.” He said that her appointment would better equip it to meet the needs of the community. “Belinda will be focused on leading and positioning the health service to fully embed the major changes implemented over the last number of years, and on delivering outstanding levels of clinical care for all patients.” Head of nursing Amanda Edwards will continue as interim chief executive until Ms Scott starts on June 25.
Making contact out west Codes have collided with Melton rugby and AFL players joining a statewide campaign to get more women and girls to play contact sports. Western Districts Rugby Union Club, which represents Melton, Footscray and Brimbank, and Melton Centrals Women’s AFL club are calling for more players to get involved by attending a training session or getting down to a match as seasons kick off this month. Footy player Alice Masters spreads her time between rugby union and AFL representing Western Districts and Melton Central clubs. “There’s a strong push for female participation in sport, even at a government level, and we think that it’s important for us to put our support behind that,” Masters said. “We’re calling for women who are interested in being part of a sport to come and have a go even if it’s in a sports administration role,
managing, coaching, umpiring or training.” Masters was one of nine Wildcats selected for the inaugural Melbourne Rebels women’s rugby squad that played in the national Super W competition earlier this year. She said Melton’s Nicole Callinan, who plays for the Western Bulldogs AFL side and Rachel Jackson of Williamstown VFLW were also putting the municipality on the map. Both local teams field female senior and junior teams and have home games scheduled for this weekend. Wildcats play at Melton’s Macpherson Park Recreation Reserve and Melton Centrals plays at Arnolds Creek Reserve. Reclink team kicks on Reclink is hoping to kick some serious goals in community engagement with the launch of a new football team. The Melton Lions will play in a midweek social league, but Reclink founder Peter Cullen hopes to attract more players before entering the competition next month. “The Melton Lions football team is a way that we can engage people who have difficulties accessing mainstream sports clubs,” Mr Cullen said. “This could be because of financial hardship, homelessness or mental health issues … establishing a football program allows us to respond to social challenges in the area.” Reclink Australia provides people who are experiencing extreme disadvantage with
opportunities to participate in sports programs throughout Victoria. “This is an initiative aimed at supporting disadvantaged and disengaged people through team sports and recreation,” Mr Cullen said. “Sport provides physical and mental benefits and allows people to be around an environment that can support them with their difficulties.” He said training has already attracted 14 players but more are welcome. Pop-up sports clinics are also offered for those who want to try something new. Training is held Wednesday 11am-12.30pm at Melton Recreation Reserve Esther Lauaki

I’m very pleased to hear the Victorian Government has committed to the Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) initiative with a State Budget injection of a further $50 million.
I can’t wait for the City Vista Sports Precinct to be complete.
The grants program has assisted interface councils, like ours, to build critical infrastructure to service local communities. Last year, Melton City Council received $8.1 million from the GSF to fund eight fantastic projects, including upgrades to Hannah Watts Park, MacPherson Park, and Aintree community hub. This commitment will mean so many more projects will be realised in the round of funding, to continue to build and beautify the City. On the eve of Anzac Day, we pause to pay our respects to those who gave so much for our great country. As Mayor, it will be my great privilege to attend the Dawn Service in Melton, and I invite residents to join me as a mark of respect for our armed services, and acknowledge the commitment of those who have served their country. Details on Anzac Day services in the City of Melton can be found on our website. As part of Anzac Day commemorations, I also encourage you to place a white cross in the specially marked area on the Melton Civic Centre lawn. The crosses are available for a gold coin donation from the Melton Library and Learning Hub, Melton Civic Centre and the Melton Visitor Information Centre, with proceeds going to the Partners of Veterans Association. The crosses will be laid out on the Civic Centre lawn until 9 May 2018.
Earlier this month, we marked the starting of works which will see the construction of two synthetic and two natural grass soccer pitches, a pavilion, commercial kitchen, car park, pathways and of course, beautiful landscaping throughout. The Caroline Springs George Cross Football Club’s generous contribution of $1 million, along with further capital and ongoing maintenance contributions, has ensured that this project could become a reality. Just a stone’s throw away is the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre which is on track to be completed by December. You might’ve noticed steel work for a section of the extension put up last week, and preparations for the light poles and tennis courts have also begun. The building will really start shape soon. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Caroline Springs community for your feedback about Lake Caroline. It is always pleasing to see passion among the community. A new pump and motor has recently been installed, allowing the fountain to return to full working order. Council is assessing options in regards to improving the perceived cleanliness of the lake, and we always welcome your feedback and ideas about how we might achieve this. In the meantime, we are installing lights around the lake through the Light Up Lake Caroline initiative. Works are due to begin by September, and will be completed by the end of the year.
Lest we forget.
Finally, it is important that we take a moment this Anzac Day to remember those who ¡¢£ £¤¥£ ¤¢ ¦¦§¨ ¡¢£ © ¢ª¤© « «¤¢©¥¨ ¡¢£ ¬¡® ¯¤° ¥ «¥ ± ¡²¥ £ ¢¥ so much to make this country what it is today.

Draining times for river When the Moorabool River dried up in 2009, it was considered a one-in-a-100-year event, but just nine years later, it’s happened again. With the nearby Bostock Reservoir at just 45 per cent capacity, water flows down the east branch of the river, which flows near Mount Egerton, are non-existent. Activists have called for action between local water authorities and the state government to help the river remain a valued water source. Resident Cameron Steele said the Moorabool River is the most flow stressed in Victoria. “There’s no other river that has more [water] allocated to other uses rather than the environment,” Mr Steele said. “At the mouth of the river, the flows have dropped from traditionally 90 megalitres a day down to 10. What it’s meant is that this river has really become susceptible to drying out.” Mr Steele said residents lobbied hard for environmental flows a decade ago and partially succeeded. “We succeeded in getting flows to be brought forward which represented about 2500 megalitres for the river but the problem with that is that it is a finite amount each year and if there hasn’t been inflows, that amount decreases,” he said. “So what we’re facing is next year’s allocation for environmental flows are having to be eased into now for this year.” The Moorabool East River is the responsibility of the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA). A CCMA spokeswoman said since July, the Moorabool catchment had received 75 per cent less than its average rainfall. She said even with environmental water releases from Lal Lal Reservoir, the Moorabool was still flow stressed. “The CCMA is also working in partnership with Barwon Water, DELWP and the local

community to deliver the Living Moorabool project, a long-term and large scale commitment to restoring the Moorabool River,” she said. “The project aims to improve riverbank vegetation, improve flow regimes and connectivity for fish and platypus, overcome fish barriers and improve diversity of flora and fauna. Over $2.1 million has been committed
to the project over the next four years.” Mr Steele said water authorities had a role to play in preserving the environment. “We’ve given this river a hiding for 160-odd years. It’s been taken too far and we need to be proactive in bringing it back.”

Seniors’ say on positive ageing Moorabool council wants to hear from the shire’s older residents. A new “age-friendly ambassadors” group will meet community groups, organisations and individuals, seeking ideas on how the council can improve services for seniors. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the ambassadors would assist in the delivery of an age-friendly approach aimed at raising the profile of positive ageing and provide information and advice to the council. He said senior citizens would be asked to fill out a survey or quick question postcard “to let us know how we can work together to make Moorabool a great place to grow old in”. The Age-Friendly Project is aimed at improving the age-friendliness of communities through consultation as well as helping to identify and drive some local projects. Ideas will be workshopped to identify projects for Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Bungaree. Six age-friendly ambassadors from community groups have been engaged by the council. The survey can be completed online until May 31. Paper copies and postcards will be available at the Lerderderg and Ballan libraries, through the Rural Library Service, and via customer service at the Darley and Ballan council offices. Holiday build buddies A workshop in Bacchus Marsh kept young hands and minds busy during the school holidays. Bunnings Warehouse Melton staff visited Studio 22 youth centre in Bacchus Marsh to help kids with building projects as part of a school holiday youth program. They built and decorated a garden caddy, painted timber pieces to make a giant Jenga game and made pencil boxes. Bunnings activity organiser Val Turner said
the workshop helped engage local young people at the Moorabool Youth Services Centre. “The kids have learnt how to work together in a team and help one another out,” she said. “They’ve learnt some basic woodworking skills and building things. “The workshop has engaged them through the school holidays, giving them something to do that will keep them interested.” Sena Senbey

Brooklyn’s Jaime Penna is an ambassador for the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, a Victorian version of Sport England’s viral campaign that led to 3.9 million British women getting active. The soccer player, who is pregnant with her second child, recalls being told to lose weight when she asked for bigger shorts after the birth of her son. “I’ve played soccer for pretty much all my life, for 20 years. I had a child and then I found it really difficult to return to a sport that I’d always known and loved,” she said. “I would always ask for the large in the men’s and one day they weren’t available and the man turned around and said to me, ‘Well, why don’t you lose some weight’. “I thought about it and I was like, you know
what, I’ve had a child, my body might not be the way it used to be but it tells a beautiful story.” Penna features in VicHealth’s This Girl Can advertisement, which shows women sweating it out at sports including boxing, roller derby and football. VicHealth chief Jerril Rechter said research showed three in five Victorian women didn’t get enough physical activity. “We’re hoping that our This Girl Can Victoria campaign will help more women right across Victoria to get physically active in their day-to-day life,” she said. MY PLACE Potato farmer Bernie White has had his feet firmly planted in Springbank for nearly 50 years. The founder of Moorabool’s popular Spudfest chats with Esther Lauaki. What is your connection with Melton/ Moorabool? I have been living and farming in this area for 48 years. What are you passionate about? My passions are farming (especially potatoes and fat lambs), family, Spudfest, bowls, farmers markets.
Both my parents came from farming backgrounds, so at 14 I left school to work on the family farm at Springbank. In 2007, a small group of Trentham residents joined together and ran a very successful Spudfest on a much smaller scale than 2018 will be. The event celebrates and promotes Trentham potato farming, which dates back to the 1860s and the gold rush era. Funds raised at the event have helped fund a La Trobe University Bendigo agribusiness

If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I love this area just the way it is. Spudfest will be held on Saturday, May 5, in Trentham from 10am-4pm. Details: trenthamspudfest.org.au

The Noirot 2400W ‘Spot Plus’ Electric Panel Heater is just one of many heating solutions from Harvey Norman. (Supplied)
Keep it cosy this winter with a heater from Harvey Norman Melbourne autumns can be mellow but next month can produce icy blasts – and we need to be prepared, writes Carole Levy. Harvey Norman stores are bursting at the seams with all types of heating systems. Among a myriad of other heaters, they have electric panel heaters, ideal for kids’ bedrooms and apartments; and flued gas heaters to tame the climate in large spaces; to split-systems for heating the entire home.
It has a 5.2kW heating output and a built-in humidifier tray that creates good balance and comfort in indoor air. Zero indoor emissions also make it great for allergy sufferers and those with other respiratory problems.
Harvey Norman makes choosing the right system for your home easy. There’s an installation service and delivery or click and collect. And if money’s tight right now, there are interest-free plans with zero deposit and monthly payments.
A remote-control allows convenient temperature/setting selections and there’s a set-and-forget operation to maintain desired temperature.
Here are just three heaters to consider, in terms of budget and specific heating needs:
It’s safe when kids are around, with its child lock, and there’s an on-off programming timer to set before you head out to work then come home to welcome warmth.
Noirot 2400W Spot Plus Electric Panel Heater, $449
And if you’re replacing an older model, Harvey Norman can arrange installation from as low as $299.
This European-designed heater is economical, totally silent and allergy-free and comes with a lifetime warranty. If you or your kids have asthma, this one is a beauty for keeping bedrooms healthy and cosy. It reads room temperature every 30 seconds ensuring maximum economy, is super-easy to use and can be wall-mounted or freestanding. It’s also a perfect choice for apartment living rooms – users say once the biggest room is heated up, doors can be opened to allow heat to flow through to other areas. They also say it’s not a ‘drying’ heat. The sleek design doesn’t impinge on decor, and an extra $50 gets you a timer. Rinnai EnergySaver 559FT Flued Gas Fan Heater – white, $1989 This is one is the most popular choices of power-flued space heaters for Australian homes and ideal for large living areas. A powerful fan on this gas heater ensures the heat is evenly spread throughout the room. More good news is that it has a 4.3-star energy rating and, if you run it on ‘economy’ mode, you can expect even lower running costs.
Fujitsu 8.5kW Inverter Reverse-Cycle Split-System, $2165 (Plus bonus Weber Baby QTM Titanium Q1000 LP (50060224) via redemption – until May 5, 2018) With a vertical swinging louvre, dehumidifying action and a programmable timer, this one is designed for year-round climate comfort – as effective in winter as it is in summer. It has a micro-processor that adjusts airflow to compensate for changes in an area’s temperature, as well as providing efficient operation. It even has a human sensor, adjusting output to the number of people in a room, so it limits energy use and maintains desired temperature. Available in smaller sizes to suit bedrooms as well, this particular model has a 9kW heating capacity (8.5kW cooling) which means it can cosy up larger open-plan areas. Users say it quickly and easily heats several rooms. And the dehumidifying function can remove up to 2.5 litres of moisture per hour. To browse further heating choices, go to www.harveynorman.com.au, or visit a store near you.

Genesis delivers great gym without the attitude Take a dip in the west’s only heated mineral salted swimming pool, do a session of yoga, take a Les Mills-certified group class or use one of 50 cutting-edge cardio machines – becoming part of the state-of-the art gymnasium that is Genesis Fitness Club in Melton South could be the start of something really big for you. More than 200 new members join Genesis Fitness and Melton Swim School each month, with good reason. Health enthusiast and member care manager Dale Azzopardi is part of the genuine and passionate team at Genesis that focuses on mind and soul as much as the body. Genesis provides a wide selection of health products and services, and Dale and the Genesis team work continuously to foster a family-friendly health space. “A lot of people fear the gym and at times it is understandable, but we are worlds apart from your average gym, Dale says. “Some facilities and their staff can be intimidating and, in some cases arrogant. We don’t stand for that culture and encourage a welcoming environment. Dale says one of the biggest issues he had with gyms in the past was the dishonesty. “I’ve been in this industry for about 10 years now I got tired of gyms using specific phrases to fool the customer, he says. “When we say there is no joining fee, we mean it; there will be no ‘administration fee’ and when we say, ‘no lock-in contracts’ that is exactly what we mean. It’s as easy as $12.95 a week for an all access 24 hour membership, no strings attached. “We want you to come to the club, get healthy and have a great frame of mind when doing it. What’s more, pensioner and students are eligible for exclusive rates. “We also have the industry’s most technologically-advanced body scanner in-house, the EVOLT 360. It gives a non-intrusive report of your body’s health and well being. Water levels, visceral fats, muscle mass – and from there on it can give you a personal suggestion of macro nutrients your body needs to get fit. “We also retail Gym Foods Australia for those short of time, these chef prepared meals are great for those on the go or who need a quick and healthy meal. “We run over 50 complementary group fitness and small group personal training classes throughout the week, both mornings and evenings. These sessions give you the opportunity to be coached in a guided environment and to train in a more social setting. “Enjoy cardio and strength training in a fun atmosphere and meet new friends in an inclusive and supportive environment whilst looking and feeling your best. Genesis Fitness Club, 15-21 Coburns Road, Melton South. “Warrabillia” is a truly rural property with views of the undulating land that surrounds it. On about two hectares, there is room for a beautiful and extensive garden and a farming plot behind – enough for a small business or a productive food garden. The Victorian facade incorporates a deep timber deck with a bullnose verandah, sash windows adding to the charm offensive. The original hardwood floors in the hall, kitchen and main living area (with cast iron fireplace) complement the white country-style kitchen with exposed timber benchtops. The house resonates with home comforts. Three bedrooms have grey carpeting and a main renovated bathroom is complemented by a large “mud room” off the back deck to keep the mess outside. A small fruit orchard is the perfect punctuation. Live the dream in Gordon.
This immaculate three-bedroom house has a tiled hall and a front, carpeted sitting room opposite the main bedroom with split-system, walk-in robe and en suite. Two further carpeted rooms have built-in robes. The separate study is a great asset. Past the central bathroom, walk into the huge open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area where multiple fans, split-systems and pendant lighting plus a Coonara fireplace create a strong comfort factor. The kitchen has plenty of storage, stone benchtops and stainless-steel appliances. On this 669 square block, the outdoor spaces are spacious and manicured. They include a decked, L-shaped pergola with fans and lighting, plus a barbecue area with woodfire oven. The property is within walking distance of schools, shops and parkland. Other features include CCTV cameras and alarm.

This pristine two-year-old is far from average. It benefits from the hand of a clever interior designer with remarkable attention to detail and is an expression of on-point decor that would be at home in a glossy mag. From a series of snazzy pendants, square-set cornices and grey and white palette to matte oaken-grey floating floorboards all through, to a butler’s pantry and a luxe dressing room, everything comes together in a celebration of today’s style. The main bedroom and another with mirrored robes flank the entry hall, as does the laundry with 2pac cabinetry.

The L-shaped dressing room in the main bedroom is a fully fitted space guaranteed to win any fashionista’s heart. The en suite is pretty wow, too. It has a stacked-stone highlight wall, glossy white wall tiles, a raised bowl-basin atop a long stone vanity bench, brilliant and stylish storage and a toilet behind the same white 2pac doors as seen throughout. The other two beautifully decorated bedrooms (with mirrored robes and shelves) are along a rear hallway. This entire ‘wing’ is accessed via double sliding doors in a sound-proof wall – great for blocking noise from the neighbouring living hub.
Also along this hall is a kid’s lounge room behind in-wall sliders, as well as the swish, fully tiled main bathroom. This has a freestanding oval tub set against another stacked-stone wall, a heated towel rail and a bowl-basin on a slab of rich timber. A ‘bunched’ trio of industrial pendants marks the dining table spot in the hub, the sitting area is spacious and the kitchen a treat for cooks and entertainers. An L-shaped butler’s pantry has oodles of storage space, the same mocha 2pac cabinetry as in the kitchen, glass splashbacks and gas cooktop and underbench oven.

A window splashback in the kitchen is designed to see the kids play in a side yard playground with a pair of cubbies, while pot drawers, 900mm gas cooktop and underbench oven, a dishwasher and wine rack also feature. Not to mention the massive stone waterfall island bench able to seat six. It’s all pretty glam. Outside, a gabled pergola has extra-wide timber floorboards underfoot and looks out to a Balinese-style hut and lush lawn. And four large planter boxes promise plenty of kitchen bounty. Do your research before buying off the plan Buying an apartment off-the-plan can be an attractive prospect, writes Daniel Butkovich from Domain. Buyers get a new apartment, and there are grants for first-home buyers and tax advantages for investors that provide an added incentive. But there is a significant degree of risk involved. You are buying something that does not exist, and there is no possibility of seeing the finished product before purchase. Research reduces risk The most important thing to research is the track record of the developer, according to general manager of McGrath Projects Adam Sparkes. “If they have significant experience and have rolled out a number of projects, use their last completed building as a case study,” he says. Head conveyancer at CM Lawyers Alex Sapounas says buyers should inspect the developer’s previous buildings. “Have a chat to some of the owners,” he says. “Ask about their experience with the developer. Did they meet their timelines? Were there issues with the quality of the work?” Larger developers often manage construction, while smaller companies usually employ a builder. “The developer might be the landowner, and they will then engage a builder to do the construction,” Mr Sparkes says. “Do the same research on the construction company.” Buyers should engage a solicitor or conveyancer with experience in off-the-plan purchases to investigate the contract. The contract may contain a sunset clause, which allows either the developer or buyer

to cancel the contract if the building isn’t completed within a certain timeframe. How to get the best price To find out if an apartment is good
value, research past sales and other new developments. Even though off-the-plan apartments have a set price, vendors may still be open to negotiation. The banks might want to see 20 pre-sales, which
often means those 20 are sold at very reasonable prices. First-home buyers can also take advantage of government grants up to $20,000, to contribute to the purchase.

46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 24, 2018
SPORT Burras overcome false start to put points on the board Diggers Rest made the most of getting on the court in the Riddell District Netball League. After a false start in round one, with their match against Romsey postponed due to a power blackout, the Burras were itching to get out and play a game. They gave a strong first impression against Broadford, winning 70-21. Burras coach Pam Strong said it was good to finally get out and have a run. She said the late postponement of the round one game had unsettled them, but they had responded well at training and refocused. “It’s the first time playing together for the girls,” she said. “One of Broadford girls went down injured
with a knee injury and we had to push through. It was really good to get everyone a run and they all contributed.” Kathie Dicker starred in the shooting circle with 55 goals from 68 attempts. She formed a good partnership with Shelby Strong who shot 15 goals. Pam Strong said while Dicker was new to the side, the two shooters had played together before. “They were great,” she said. “Kathie has been part of state teams but hasn’t played for a few years. “I’ve known her for years and gave her a call and she was free. “She’s experienced and slotted in really well.”
Anica Scherer, who has come across from Lancefield, was named best on court. Scherer and the other defenders made the most of the absence of star Kangaroos shooter Amelia Brock. Carly Harrison and Olivia Thomas were the other additions to the Burras team during the off season. Strong, in her first year of coaching the Burras, said she thought they were stronger than the team that went out in the first week of finals last year. “I think they are combining well and everyone is versatile and plays more than one position. The four we have brought in are 21 and under so we have a really young team.
Panthers tread new path By Tara Murray It was a completely new Melton South A-grade team that took to the court on Saturday in the opening round of the Ballarat Netball League. Changes were aplenty in the off season, with a new coach and group of new players coming together. New coach Alan Watson said not one member of last year’s team would be part of the line-up this year. Watson, who was named AFL Goldfields netball coach of the year, comes to the club having taken Lancefield to a Riddell District Netball League grand final last season. He said this squad would be a mixture of experience and youth. Tahnysha Salanoa, Courtney Annett, Taylah Watson, Olivia Pels and Rhys Carter-Coleman Tukapua have come across from Lancefield with Watson, adding some experience to the side. “We’re starting fresh,” he said. “There’s a lot of young kids there at the moment who are very skillful and I’m going to promote the youth along with the five girls from Lancefield. “Our problem will be trying to get as many people together at the same time.” Watson said he had been encouraged by the younger talent at the club, with many pushing up into the top side. Arleah Hunt is a centre court player who Watson said is quite talented, while Tyler Talavou is the side’s wing defence. Grace Valele, who made the under-15 state team, will play goal defence and Maria Tahi will give another shooting option. Watson said their squad would have a lot of flexibility with a number of options in each position. The Panthers started their season on Saturday against local rivals Melton. Despite missing Pels and Salanoa, the Panthers won 46-33. Salanoa was representing Victoria at the under-19 national championships. Annett shot 30 goals for the Panthers, while Paige Gilcrist scored 22 goals for the Bloods. Watson said while finals was the aim for the A-grade side, which has struggled in recent years, the first focus was improving the culture and he had been pleased with early signs. “Things are looking quite promising. I think we’ll cause a few issues for the opposition.” Numbers across the board have been good for the Panthers, with the club to field a side in the new E-grade competition. Seven clubs have sides in the new competition. Watson said this side was an opportunity for players who can’t train regularly to still be able to play. In other A-grade results, Bacchus Marsh claimed the win against Darley. The Cobras led at every break on the way to the 40-32 win.
“Across the board we are a lot stronger. “We will have some challenges with girls going away. Finals are definitely the aim and I’d be disappointed if we don’t make it.” Melton Centrals opened their account with a solid win against Woodend-Hesket on Saturday night. Centrals led at every break, winning three of the four quarters on the way to the 55-42 win. Rebecca Morabito continued her good start to the season, named best on court for Centrals with 30 goals from 36 attempts. Rockbank proved no match for Macedon, with the Cats winning 68-32. Burnside Heights raises the bar Burnside Heights has more than exceeded its coach’s expectations early in the Essendon District Football League women’s competition. Fielding a team for the first time, the Bears have won their first two matches easily against Hillside and Strathmore, both also contesting their first seasons. Bears’ coach Brent Thomas said he couldn’t be more proud of the playing group. “I could not have asked for a better start,” he said. “They’ve raised the bar and we’ve been able to recruit so many good players.” It’s been a work in progress for the Bears, who started training back in June with a group who didn’t know how to play the game. Thomas said they had come far since then with a mix of new and experienced players in the side. “To watch them on the Friday night [round one] and then again against Strathmore … you can’t coach that. “You can prepare them, but it’s up to them once they’re on the ground.” Thomas has been thrilled with the performances so far. Brooke McKinley, playing as a forward pocket, has been a star up forward, kicking 13 goals in two games. McKinley previously played at Deer Park and was named best on ground in its 2016 premiership. Thomas said there were a number of mums in the group who were keen just to be involved. He singled out Ana Mulipola, who brings her kids to training because her partner works night shift, as someone who is keen to give the sport a go. “She runs around the ground with the pram,” he said. “She’s worked her way through to the leadership group. She’s an amazing girl.” Thomas said while he sets high expectations, development remains the main focus. “It’s about their development, not winning. Winning will take care of itself.” The Bears had a bye at the weekend and this weekend face Sunbury Kangaroos. Thomas said the Kangaroos match will be a good test of where his side is at. In other matches, Keilor Park lost to Pascoe Vale 37.20 (242)-0.0 (0), while Hillside lost to Strathmore, 7.7 (49)-1.5 (11).

Diggers Rest out of the park with 45-goal opener Diggers Rest couldn’t have asked for much more as it finally took to the field in the Riddell District Football League. After a delayed start to the season with their round one match against Romsey being postponed, the Burras came prepared for Broadford on Saturday. Even though the two sides are at different ends of the ladder, no one imagined the final margin. The Burras had a massive 63 scoring shots and absolutely smashed the Kangaroos, 45.18 (288)-3.3 (21). The Burras started with nine goals in the first quarter and that would be their lowest quarter tally of the day. They kept the Kangaroos goalless after quarter-time.
Burras coach Jamie Lobb said despite the blow-out margin, the side stuck to its game plan. “The guys were fairly keen,” he said. “We hadn’t had a chance to be on the ground yet with some work being done. “It was always good to start off like that. We played the way we have trained and we didn’t go away from the team structures.” Lobb said the playing group focused on the team, not individual rewards. There was plenty of goalkickers for the Burras with 12 players contributing to the score. Ten of those players kicked multiple goals, led by Mark Freeth, who kicked nine, and Cameron McCabe who kicked eight goals. Brent Tuckey kicked six goals in his return to
the club. Lobb said he was a welcome inclusion on the players’ list. “He played a few games at his home club Stawell last season,” he said. “But the travel was too much. We wouldn’t say no to him when he wanted to come back to the club. “He’s been here for three to four years.” The win came with the Burras still missing a number of key players and five players lining up for their first game for the Burras, including 16-year-old Daniel Paulete. Lobb said they would have selection dilemmas when Cale Morton, Tom Evans, Luke Smailes, Patty Jackson, Brad Sluggett and Stephen Ruane were available to play. The Burras now face Riddell in round two.
The Bombers are win less from their first two games. “We’re realistic at where Broadford is at,” Lobb said. “Riddell always gets up for us. You can never right them off.” Melton Centrals missed an opportunity to go 2-0, after losing to Woodend-Hesket. The Hawks came from behind against Centrals to win 13.11 (89)-11.8 (74). Dylan Weir kicked six goals for Centrals. The tough start continued for Rockbank, with the Rams smashed by Sunbury Kangaroos, 23.23 (161)-1.3 (9). Jake Mallia was the only goalkicker for the Rams and Aidan O’Neil was named their best. Tara Murray
Devils win local thriller By Tara Murray It was a gutsy win by Darley in the Ballarat Football League grand final rematch against Bacchus Marsh. The two local rivals, who have again started the season as favourites, put on a display worthy of another final. After losing two of their key players before half-time and spending some of the third quarter a man down, the Devils trailed by 31 points in the third. They responded, kicking five goals in a row to get the win, 11.12 (78)-11.11 (77). Devils coach Heath Scotland said the win was character building. “To come away with four points was fantastic for us,” he said. “Take away the third quarter, I thought we controlled the game. “Credit to our boys, they played with no bench for the second half and there was a period in the third quarter when we had 17 players.” Scotland said he was pleased with how his side responded when they were down on manpower. Injuries were compounded when Matthew Young was yellow carded and sent from the field. Steven Kennedy and Dan Roy were injured in the first half and may have to spend a few weeks on the sidelines. Kennedy, who has returned this season, will have scans and will be assessed this week. The news looks worse for Roy and early indications are he will be out for the year with an ACL injury. “They are quality players,” Scotland said. “We also had a few players underdone. The players lifted themselves. “Shane Page was fantastic all game when we needed someone to step up. “Brian Graham was phenomenal again. I don’t think he gets enough recognition.” He also praised the defensive work of Leigh Spiteri, Jacob Zeestraten, Jake Edwards and ruckman Dylan Reid. Scotland said he thought that Bacchus Marsh had improved on last year, so a win was vital. “We came in underdone and not having a full side during the pre-season,” he said. “We’ve got guys to come back in and we’re in a good spot.” For the Cobras, Aaron Willitts kicked three goals in his first game at the club. Willitts was named their best alongside new skipper Scott Sherlock and ruckman Daniel Burton. In the other local derby, Melton came away with the points against Melton South. Playing for the first Darren Stanley Shield, the Bloods started the better of the two sides and it proved to be the difference. The Bloods led by 26 points at quarter-time and that proved to be the final margin, with the Bloods winning 15.8 (98)-10.12 (72). Connor Griffiths was named best on ground for the Bloods and Braedan Kight kicked three goals in the win. Lachlan Watkins was named the Panthers’ best. 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 24, 2018
Darley and Bacchus Marsh prepare for the Thacker-Closter Cup. (Supplied)
Darley takes home the cup Darley has retained the Thacker-Closter Cup. Outside of premierships, the cup is the biggest round for local rivals Darley and Bacchus Marsh junior football and netball clubs. The cup goes to the club which comes away with the most points accumulated throughout the day dependent on results. The cup is named after Darley’s John Thacker and Bacchus Marsh’s Bill Closter, who both played big roles in each of their junior clubs. Any win by the senior side gets three points, while any win by a reserves side gets one point, with the overall points winner taking home the cup. It took until the final matches of the day for the Devils to get the win and hold on to the trophy. The Cobras took out the under-16.5 senior football match 8.13 (61)-6.4 (40), to take the lead by one point with only the under-17 A netball remaining. Mace Cousins was best on ground for the Cobras in that win. The Devils weren’t troubled at all in the final game of the day, on their way to a 43-21 win, with Indya Ford named best on court. It sealed the Devils’ win, 16 points to 14. The Devils won eight games for the day, with the Cobras winning six matches. As well as Ford and Cousins, Chloe Gibson, Shae Lewin, Lachlan Bartolo, Sienna Dugan, Archie Lalor, Addison Wright, Jayven Tanner, Casey Richards, Ethan McKercher, Lilli Condon, Spencer Jenks and Audrey Griffiths, were awarded best on ground or court medals for their respective matches. Freeman’s visit was organised by Lend Lease, which is the major sponsor of Melton Hockey Club and Melton City Little Athletics club, both located at the Bridge Road Sports Precinct. Melton Thoroughbreds finally broke through for their first win of the Big V men’s division 2 season. Winless after the first four rounds, the Thoroughbreds’ luck turned on Saturday night against Pakenham Warriors. It was an even start for the two teams, before the Thoroughbreds broke the game open in the middle two quarters. The Thoroughbreds outscored the Warriors, 31-10 in the second quarter and then 24-15 in the third to open up a 27-point lead heading into the final quarter. The Thoroughbreds held their nerve, going goal for goal in the final quarter to seal the 105-79 point win. Emmanuel Malou was the standout with 37 points, as he shot 13 from 17 from the field, including four from five beyond the arc. Only one Thoroughbreds player didn’t hit the scoreboard. The Thoroughbreds sit 11th after five rounds ahead of a clash with Wallan Panthers this weekend. The women’s side had a tough night, losing to Melbourne Black Angels in the division 2 competition. All four quarters were close, but the Angels managed to outscore the Thoroughbreds in each quarter to extend the lead throughout the game. The final score was 66-57. Captain Jenna Conroy top-scored with 16 points, while also pulling down 12 rebounds. The Thoroughbreds sit seventh, with two wins and two losses from the opening five rounds. This week they face ladder leaders Wallan Panthers. The youth league men’s side, which is coming off a two-point loss against Pakenham Warriors, also face the Panthers this week.

Oh, Suzy – I’d queue for you By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring
takes note of the normal driving pattern of the driver and issues a warning if they are wandering through the likes of mobile phone usage or driver drowsiness. Automatic high-low beam headlights make life even simpler when driving in varied conditions.
Hot-car lovers on a limited budget will love the new Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo. A price tag of just $25,490 for the six-speed manual and $27,490 for a six-speed auto means a lot of bang for your bucks To add to the sporty feel of the hot little Suzy, we had it during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. For 11 days, our bright yellow machine was eager, exciting and enjoyable for every minute. The 2018 Swift Sport Turbo has grown in size when compared to previous pocket rockets from the Japanese giant. But clever engineering means it is light – just 975 kilograms.
Driving
Styling
Though it carries styling cues from the five million Suzuki Swifts built so far, this new generation has moved a little more towards mainstream than is appreciated by some existing Swift owners we have spoken to. They say the headlights are not as vertical as they like and that the C-pillars have lost part of their big ’n’ bold personality, with two-part upper edges including the door handles not quite working.
Inside
The interior has a strong sporting accent, with semi-race seats with red stitching in black cloth material and on the leather-wrapped steering wheel. Red also features on the instruments and door pulls.
Powertrain
Power comes from a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder unit delivering 103 kW. An impressive 230 Nm of torque reaches its maximum at 2500 revs and holds that level until 3500.
Brilliant yellow paint cries out for attention on the Swift Sport Turbo. (Supplied)
Transmission is to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or six-speed auto. Thankfully, our car had the DIY gearbox. Somehow the thought of owning an automatic Swift Sport leaves us cold. But we did sample an auto during track testing at the Norwell Motorplex a couple of months back and have to admit it wasn’t too bad.
Infotainment
A 7.0-inch four-segment touchscreen is well positioned at eye level. It elicits minimum driver inattention and gives access to audio and
navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect you to your smartphone.
Safety
Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo has many safety features usually only found in cars costing on the wrong side of $75,000. They include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS) that detects not only other vehicles, but also pedestrians. Lane Departure Warning and LaneWeaving Alert (LDW) are also standard. Cleverly, LDW
Track testing at the Norwell Motorplex – about midway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast – showed the little hotshot could be pushed to its limit and remain easily controllable. On the open road during our test week, it remained as impressive as at the track. Obviously we were keeping the Suzuki Turbo well within its limits and you can corner hard without taking any risks. Ride comfort is OK on normal roads, but harshness does creep in as soon as you’re on anything other than smooth surfaces. Road noise isn’t too bad – but, again, the rough stuff does mean you have to wind that stereo up. The Swift Sport Turbo has plenty of punch from its little 1.4-litre powerplant, and the small size of the engine means turbo lag is minimal. Once the turbo is up and running to best effect, solid acceleration makes overtaking safe and simple. Fuel consumption isn’t likely to be the first priority in the minds of keen drivers, but we are pleased to report it will sit under five litres per hundred kilometres on motorways and you have to be working it hard around town to get it to seven litres per hundred.
Summing up
The all-new Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo is a superb piece of engineering from the company that’s arguably the best in the small car field. Definitely one to put on your short list if your budget is tight and you’re a keen driver.
