Heavy lifting for youth

(Dennis Manktelow)

These young weightlifters are pumped about the prospects of testing their might on the national stage. Alyssa, 11, Joel, 13 and Alishia, 16 are training several times a week with an eye firmly on competing at the Australian Weightlifting Federation Under-15 and Under-17 Youth Championships in July. Joel has already qualified after lifting 46 kilograms in the clean-and-jerk and 30 kilograms in the snatch at last month’s Geelong Youth Championships. He shone again at the state championships in Melbourne on Saturday, winning the best under 15 male lifter. Alyssa sealed her place in the nationals on Saturday, lifting 24 kilograms in the snatch event and 37 kilograms in the clean and kerk – four kilograms above her personal best. Alishia won best female youth lifter with a 48 kilogram snatch and 60 kilogram clean and jerk but just missed out on a qualifying score for nationals. She will have a final shot at the Geelong competition on May 20. Coach Toni Lane said the trio had been training with Invictus Fitness in Bacchus Marsh for the past three years. “I think they’re going to do great,” Lane said. “I hope that they all feel really proud of themselves. To be able to say that they competed at national level would be amazing.” Esther Lauaki

Dim view of cable theft “This causes significant disruption to community recreation and leisure activities planned at these reserves and to the volunteers. “Council has been working with affected clubs to provide alternate training venues.” Riddle District Football Netball League headquarters, based at the Arnolds Creek reserve, had to relocate to an office in Ballarat for the week. League operations manager Jordan Doyle said the thefts caused “quite an inconvenience”. “It happened on Friday [April 20] and [power] was only reconnected late Thursday afternoon,”

Mr Doyle said. “On Sunday four junior teams were meant to play, all those games were rescheduled and the Melton Centrals had to play away because there were no lights. “That meant that the clubs weren’t able to make any money through the canteen because there was no power to run the fridges.” A Melton police spokesman confirmed they were investigating and encouraged anyone with information to contact Melton police. Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity can call Melton police on 9747 7999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Dozens of sports teams based at four parks and reserves have been left in the dark after a recent spate of electrical cabling thefts across Melton. Football matches and evening training sessions were rescheduled or cancelled at Arnolds Creek Community Pavilion and Recreation Reserve last week after electrical wiring was stolen, leaving it without power. Melton council is working with police to investigate a series of thefts throughout April at Arnolds Creek, MacPherson Park, Bridge Road

Athletics and Hockey Centre and Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. Melton council’s recreation and youth manager Troy Scoble said rescheduling affected a significant number of parks. “Over the past few weeks, Melton council has experienced electrical cabling theft at a number of reserves,” Mr Scoble said. “The cabling stolen provides electricity to sports lighting and pavilions. “Replacement at these sites is estimated to take about seven to 10 days, depending on the damage caused during the theft.

By Esther Lauaki A teenager who has courageously battled cancer twice is facing a third bout with the disease. Caroline Springs 15-year-old Tyler Fishlock lost both eyes and a large part of his face to childhood cancer more than a decade ago, but in a recent heartbreaking blow he was diagnosed with bone cancer. His mother, Georgette, expressed her anguish on a Facebook page dedicated to Tyler’s journey. “After two battles with cancer … life felt like it hasn’t taken enough away from my beautiful son,” Ms Fishlock said. “Cancer has decided to rear its ugly head in the form of bone cancer.

“Tyler has been walking around with a broken fibula as a result of this cancer eating away at his bones.” In 2006, Tyler lost both his eyes to a rare genetic cancer called retinoblastoma. He beat cancer again in 2014, surviving aggressive chemotherapy and surgery. His mother said that the brave teen took last month’s devastating news “on the chin”. “We sat our son down to break the news no parent should have to do … his cancer is back,” Ms Fishlock said on Facebook. “He is the most courageous young man in the world, instead of crying, he comforted me as I cried and told me that if I feel like crying I

need to ask him for a hug … I have no words. He’s more upset about missing school, woodwork, work experience and, most importantly, going to the footy to watch his beloved Tigers.” She said the family was preparing to fight the disease together. “He has a huge battle yet again,” Mr Fishlock said. “If all goes well, the doctors hope to save his leg … then he will go back into chemo for a further 12 weeks. “I’m not sure how we are going to get through this, but I’m sure as hell not giving up on my son.”

Birth of a happy family

Staughton brawl students face discipline

Mother’s Day is a time of celebration for families, but it can also be a difficult time for those struggling to conceive. Frances Morgan will celebrate her second Mother’s Day next week with her husband Chris and their 14-month-old son Hudson. The Morgans spent nearly seven years trying to conceive, including two miscarriages and two rounds of IVF treatment at The Fertility Centre in Sunshine. They said having to wait so long before becoming parents had its challenges. “It’s very up and down, and you have your good days and bad days,” Frances said. “And you learnt very quickly that it was OK to do what you needed to do when things weren’t going well. “So if we were having a bad time, I would go shopping or have some chocolate, or a nice dinner – do whatever we needed to do for that day or two, and then think about the next step.

‘‘

You have to let friends and family in

“We learnt a lot of patience, but it was not fun.” The Aiport West couple say not shutting people out and learning to talk with others about the struggles were crucial when the fertility treatments weren’t having an impact. “I went on social media and created an anonymous ‘infertility account’ – and that was one of the best things that I did,” Frances said. “Just talking to people who were going through the same thing, or something similar, was so important for me. Just to know you’re not alone. “I know some people close themselves off from the world when things aren’t going well … I would always say, ‘No, you need support.’ “You have to let friends and family in, and they will never understand unless they’ve been

through it themselves, but you have to let them have the chance to offer help in some way.” After 14 months of parenthood, the Morgans say it has all been worth it. “When we finally got home with the baby, we were like, ‘Oh my goodness, we actually did it’,” Frances said. “We’re just so grateful to have

Hudson … you don’t know unconditional love until you have the kid and then you grow with the kid. “I was so worried about parenthood, but it has been the best year and a bit. We’re so lucky.” Ewen McRae

The principal of Staughton College has said that violence has “no place” at the school after a brawl involving dozens of students broke out last week. A 30-second video clip of the fight, which happened on April 24, emerged on social media last week. The video showed dozens of students punching and kicking, screaming and swearing at one another during a morning break. Principal David Lord sent out a text message to parents confirming there had been an “altercation”. Mr Lord told Star Weekly appropriate disciplinary action would be taken. “There is no place for incidents like this at our school,” he said. “It is disappointing and does not reflect the behaviour of the overwhelming majority of our students. “On Tuesday, there was an altercation between five students. “No students or staff required medical attention and the school was not placed into lockdown.” A concerned parent told 3AW that the fight allegedly started between two female students when one threw a hair accessory at the other before tensions boiled over into a brawl. “I’m so upset for those teachers that had to go through that,” she said. “I’m disgusted that the children had to witness that … I’m disgusted at the kids who had to be roped in when it had nothing to do with them.” Esther Lauaki

Top awards for snapper A Hillside photographer has taken out a swag of awards at the Victoria Professional Photography Awards. Jacinta Dal Ben entered eight images for consideration, four in the pet category and four in the newborn category. Her prints in the pet category received the highest score from the judges and Dal Ben was named a 2018 Victorian pet photographer finalist. She received four awards in the newborn category and was named a 2018 Victorian newborn photographer finalist. “I was hoping just one judge would get what I was trying to accomplish, particularly in the newborn category, which is my bread and butter,” she said. “I’d hoped to go well, but my images are quite conceptual so it’s hard to tell.”

Dal Ben said given the comprehensive judging criteria, the success was a nice feather in her cap. “We’re critiqued on all standards of photography, not just creativity,” she said. “Things like the rule of thirds and the technical aspects of the photo.” Dal Ben’s photography business has been going strong for seven years, so strong that she plans on expanding. “I’m taking the next stepping stone into building my own photography studio at my home, where I will be able to photograph larger families and bring to life my newborn artistic creations,” she said. Two people have been charged in the wake of two separate incidents in which two police cars were rammed. Police allege the first ramming occurred when officers attempted to intercept a stolen vehicle at a fast-food restaurant on Gisborne Road in Bacchus Marsh on April 22 at 5pm. A man and a woman, both passengers in the vehicle, were arrested at the scene, while the driver fled on foot. Police say that on April 23, a police van was rammed after a brief pursuit of a white Toyota utility with stolen plates on the Surf Coast Highway in Mt Duneed about 1.25am. Police believe the male driver to be the driver involved in the Bacchus Marsh incident. He was taken to hospital for observation under police guard. A 19-year-old Bacchus Marsh woman was charged with theft of motor car. A 23-year-old Bacchus Marsh man was charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

Church burglaries

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a series of recent church burglaries targeting 23 religious buildings, including one in Melton. A 42-year-old Kew man was charged last week with burglaries in Box Hill, Brunswick, Canterbury and Camberwell. Police said they believed several other people were involved. Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan could make about $23 million in just over six months from the sale of a large block of land. Cr Khan is selling a 24.6-hectare site in Rockbank that is designated for a major town centre plus apartments and townhouses. Price expectations are understood to be about $50 million for the rectangular land parcel at 886-940 Leakes Road which Mr Khan and a fellow Melbourne investor, Kurminder Singh, acquired in October last year from Taiwanese investors for $15.95 million. The site is part of a new suburb called Rockbank North – approved in 2012 – and is next to Mirvac’s top-selling $2.5 billion Woodlea estate. Just over 19 hectares is designated for a major town centre that could support 160,000 square metres of shops, offices and hotels, and with a 3.7-hectare portion for apartments and townhouses. Cr Khan, through his Western Institute of Technology, owns 70 per cent of the site and Mr Singh the remaining 30 per cent. In September last year – a month before he settled on the Rockbank site – Victoria’s Local Government Investigations and Compliance (LGIC) Inspectorate filed nine charges against Cr Khan of which six related to his failure to disclose a shareholding or position in a number of companies and two related to a failure to submit ordinary returns. None of the charges relate to the Rockbank land. One of the charges, relating to a failure to disclose property holdings within the municipal district of the council, has since been dropped. Cr Khan is contesting the charges.

Councillor ready to sell site

INTAJ KHAN

The site’s selling agents, Frank Nagle and Andrew Egan of Biggin & Scott Land, said Cr Khan recognised the development of the land required the expertise of a major retail developer and, given that nearby development was quickly reaching his site, he was now prepared to sell. “Very few offerings of an entire town centre are ever released to the market; the only one released in the state was the Armstrong Street Town Centre that was bought by Welsh Group in 2016,” Mr Egan said. “We expect both local and international interest in the site – we believe it will suit overseas parties as it has no planning risk and offers enormous upside of the development cycle.” Mr Khan did not respond to requests from The Australian Financial Review or Star Weekly for comment. – Australian Financial Review

Big change for Lakers Caroline Springs Football Club’s sports ground is in for a $500,000 upgrade thanks to a government grant. The grant will go towards new women’s changerooms at the grounds as well as upgrades to other parts of the ground. Club president Dean Ellis said the Lakers were “over the moon” to be given the opportunity to upgrade their facilities. “The grant was a huge surprise and it was very humbling,” Mr Ellis said. “We’ve had an increase in female participation and we need to be able to cater for our women and girls. “The interest in female football has just exploded. “If we can manage the entire upgrade of our club facilities with this money, we are more

than happy with that.” Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the upgrades will help Caroline Springs footballers train, compete and attract more members to the club. “This vital funding will help Caroline Springs Football Club compete and grow,” Ms Kairouz said. “It’s a win for local footballers and for our community. “Places like Caroline Springs Football Club are the cornerstone of local communities – that’s why we’re backing them.” The funding was part of the state government’s $60 million Community Sports Fund which is aimed at boosting women’s and community sport. Ryan Hartwig and Gavin Almenara are raising awareness of Crohn’s disease. (Dennis Manktelow)

Running for a cause Gavin Almenara normally avoids running, but a cause close to his heart inspired him to pull on the runners. In an effort to raise awareness of Crohn’s disease and colitis, Gavin vowed to run a kilometre for every $10 he raised – he ended up running more than 150 kilometres. “I had a goal of what I wanted to raise, but probably didn’t expect to be running as much as I did,” Gavin joked. Gavin was inspired to start the campaign after close friend Ryan Hartwig was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease last year. Two months later Gavin’s cousin was diagnosed with colitis. Both are Iife-long gastrointestinal disorders which affect the bowel.

“I didn’t know much about Crohn’s and colitis, then within the space of two months two people close to me had been affected,” Gavin said. His fundraising efforts were a massive success, raising more than $4000. “I regularly ran around Lake Caroline and my website raised over $1000 with donations. I also did a fundraiser in conjunction with the Caroline Springs RSL, which raised over $3000.” “I really just wanted to help out and this was my way of doing something,” he said. “I had to break up the running into blocks each week to get there, but I made it.”

A new primary school for Burnside will be a step closer to completion thanks to a $5.6 million boost. The state funding, allocated last week as part of a $353.2 million New Schools Package in the 2018-19 state budget, will go towards building the second stage of Burnside Primary School. Construction began earlier this year and stage two will include a performing arts and physical education building including a competition-grade basketball court, gym storeroom, music room with storage, staff area, multipurpose room, canteen and student and staff amenities. The school will eventually accommodate 475 students and is expected to be open in 2019. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said Burnside Primary School would help to alleviate enrolment pressures for surrounding schools and meet the demands of a growing population. The school is one of seven new schools to open next year including Aiken Primary School, Pakenham North East Primary School, Preston High School, Sanctuary Lakes P 9, Truganina East P 9 and Yarrambat Park Primary School. Premier Daniel Andrews said 28 schools would be built and planned over the next two years in the fastest growing areas. “We’re giving families in our growth areas certainty that they will have a great local school, close to home,” he said. Regional roads budget shake-up By Esther Lauaki Regional road upgrades across Victoria are the target of a $941 million state government package. Premier Daniel Andrews was in Ballan last Thursday to announce the regional roads funding that is set to be included in the forthcoming state budget. Under the package, Regional Roads Victoria (RRV), a new division of VicRoads, will be created. Based in Ballarat, it will have staff in regional centres across the state

Also as part of the $941 million package, grants totalling $100 million will be allocated to councils for road maintenance, repairs, resurfacing or rebuilding. “A package this big, this significant, requires a fundamental change in the way in which we administer regional road funding,” Mr Andrews said. “As someone who grew up in country Victoria, I know how important safe and reliable roads are for regional communities. “This ground-breaking investment will upgrade regional roads right across the state

– and for the first time give our regional road network the direct attention it deserves.” Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell welcomed the funding, but said he was concerned smaller shires would struggle to match contributions from the government. “This is good news for bigger regional shires like Ballarat,” he said. “My concern is that smaller shires will be run into debt. “I’m happy to see investment into roads, but let’s prioritise and pour the money into roads that need doing.” The regional roads package also includes

$98 million for planning and pre-construction of new bypasses on the Western Highway at Beaufort and Ararat. The state government is investing a further $229 million into road safety measures on Victoria’s most high-risk roads through the Towards Zero Road Safety Action Plan, with more new overtaking lanes, rumble strips and intersection upgrades. Key sections of the Calder Highway, Hamilton Highway and the Kiewa Valley Highway will be upgraded to improve safety, travel times and freight productivity.

Stroke victim is so write The event that changed Antonio Iannella’s life forever has become the subject of his first book. The 47-year-old was paralysed from the neck down, unable to speak or eat, after he suffered a stroke on a family holiday in 2012. While he often shares his story through his role as a Stroke Foundation ambassador, Mr Iannella is taking stroke awareness to a higher level with his book, Saigon Siren, which he hopes to release later this year. “The book is my memoir about my stroke experience,” he said. “I had my stroke in Vietnam, while on holiday travelling with my young family. I was in a bit of a mess. “Everything changed. I couldn’t function and I needed care for quite a while. “I’ve always wanted to write and so I did. I had two different writing periods, one about four years ago, but life took over and the book sat on my hard drive doing nothing until the time presented itself more recently.

“I got back into making music … things happened, I met different people and the story wrote itself – I just had to find the words to put it together.” He described his recovery as not just a physical journey but also as one that forced him to “dig deeper” on a spiritual level. “Going from being paralysed to living a life with purpose has given me a different spiritual perspective,” Mr Iannella said. “I wrote about the positive experiences I’ve had and used a lot of things that people have said along my journey and use them to tell my story.” He urges residents to be stroke aware by organising or attending a potentially life-saving StrokeSafe talk. “Learn the signs of stroke and understand how important it is to get to hospital quickly.” Details: strokefoundation.org.au Esther Lauaki

Set on about 790 square metres, this ranch-style renovated property is sure to attract a lot of attention. The L-shaped lounge and dining room is kept cosy by its built-in wood heater. The as-new kitchen has 2pac drawer storage, stone benchtops and stainless-steel appliances including a 900mm five-burner gas cooktop. The meals area has multi-paned timber sliding doors that open to an impeccably designed decked pergola with built-in seating and storage. Four carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes are on offer, including the main bedroom with a large, modern en suite and walk-in robe. The renovated main bathroom is impressive with full-height tiling. Also includes exposed timber windows throughout, great storage, ducted heating and cooling, ceiling fans, new carpet and a shed-style double garage with a double carport.

This stylishly updated three-bedroom abode is in a great spot, surrounded by parkland. The low-maintenance front garden with stylised concreted driveway leads to the neat and inviting double-gabled facade. The whole house gets great light thanks to multiple large windows. All three bedrooms are carpeted and have built-in robes. The kitchen is gorgeous, with white country-modern drawer storage, parquetry-style flooring and a glass splashback. Matching appliances add a sleek touch. Separate dining works well in a layout that includes the large lounge room with floating floorboards, white walls and downlights. The generous backyard has a garden shed. Other inclusions are central heating, evaporative cooling, an alarm and solar panels.

TOOLERN VALE 46-92 Burtons Road, 3337 Sweeney Melton: 8746 2055

Price: $789,000 – $819,000

Spanning four levels, from basement to attic, this utterly unique abode is packed to the rafters with quaint character that continues the Tudor styling of the facade. And the block of about 3410 square metres contains numerous outdoor attractions families and entertainers will value. Let’s start with the basement. As well as a bedroom with walk-in robe and a bathroom, there’s a huge entertainment room with hefty exposed beams stained dark in the Tudor style. Accessing the glass-framed swimming pool, it has a bar

atop the same bricks that appear elsewhere in the house as accent walls, as well as a wood heater. The laundry is also down here. The ground floor is all about the kitchen at the centre of lounge (with fireplace) and dining areas with hardwood floorboards and the casual meals area. The kitchen, with dark-stained timber cupboards sporting beaten-copper trims (another Tudor reference), has a dishwasher, wall oven and electric cooktop. Heading up to the first floor, there are four fitted bedrooms and a modern,

skylit bathroom. The main bedroom, with split-system and ceiling fan, has a walk-in robe and an en suite with an extra-big shower. All bedrooms have stained ceiling beams, along with floorboards in the same rich jarrah shade as in other rooms. Finally, the nearly 12-metre-long attic has floorboards and one of several air-conditioners. It would make a great retreat space or hobby room – or even a fifth bedroom. Next to the in-ground pool, encircled by

sealed aggregate, there’s a great summer house which sits amid landscaped gardens. Neighbouring this is a freestanding sauna room, big enough for a whole gang, and with a window taking in fernery views. Other noteworthy features are a large steel shed and a double garage with internal access. The centre of Melton is a 10-minute drive away, as are primary and secondary schools, and Toolern Vale General Store is within a five-minute stroll. Make your motto ‘be prepared’ when auction time looms Joel Smith, chief executive of Gavl, a global market leader in live real estate auction streaming and bidding technology, says there’s plenty of life left in the Australian market. “In fact, CoreLogic’s quarterly auction update for October 2017 cites national auction activity as being up by 26.4 per cent compared with the same time in 2016,” he says. As auctions rise in popularity in Melbourne’s western regions, it pays to understand how to get the best result when the bidding starts. Preparation is key.

Gavl offers six data-backed auction prep strategies: 1. Have patience You may think auctions are fast-paced with little time to think. Gavl’s data revealed the average time between auction bids as being just under 30 seconds, which does give think-time.

3. Bid confidently Bids tend to slow down towards the end while buyers consider their budgets. Bidding confidently at this point may show your opposition you mean business. 4. Research the market The best way to find out about the local market is to watch property auctions in the area. Gavl allows you to watch live

(iStock)

2. Think about bid increments Sizeable bids from other buyers shouldn’t scare you. Larger and smaller bids should be expected throughout the auction. Keep bidding until you’ve reached your budget – you never know when a competitor will bow out.

streamed auctions and view results from anywhere in the world. 5. Be persistent An average of 18 bids are made at auctions

so be prepared to bid several times. 6. Have a back-up plan Be prepared to come to the table with an offer immediately after the auction to give

yourself the best opportunity of having your offer considered and accepted if the property is passed in. For more information, go to gavl.com

If you were a student or staff member at Fiskville State School between 1971 and 1992, you are eligible to participate in a voluntary health study being coordinated by the Country Fire Authority (CFA). This will consist of an initial health check and referral to the health surveillance program if eligible. Participation in the health check and associated surveillance program is free.

Background: In 2011, concerns were raised about the historic use of chemicals in hot fire training, including firefighting foams at the former CFA Training College at Fiskville, and the potential risk of chemical residues affecting both human health and the local environment. A Parliamentary Inquiry into the CFA Training College at Fiskville was conducted as a result of these concerns. In response to the inquiry findings, the Victorian Government committed to an investigation of the best way to contact past students and staff (of Fiskville State School) to ensure they have the opportunity to participate in any relevant health program. This is being coordinated through a voluntary health check and surveillance program run by the CFA.

0402 225 114

Why is a Confidential Health Check being offered now? The CFA has previously offered health checks to groups who worked, trained or had any contact with the former Fiskville Training College and had concerns they might be at risk. This includes staff and students who attended Fiskville State School between 1971 and 1992. This notice serves as a reminder that former students and staff of Fiskville State School are able to participate in the health check program if they wish. Participants in the health check may then be invited to take part in the health surveillance program. What is involved in the health surveillance program? If you are interested in participating in the health check, register with the Health Surveillance Co-ordinator (healthsurveillance@cfa.vic.gov.au or phone 03 9262 8639). You will be contacted to make an appointment with an independent medical firm specialising in occupational health services. Depending on your circumstances, an independent medical provider may determine it appropriate to offer you to participate in the five year health surveillance program. The program was developed in conjunction with specialist medical experts, and involves an annual medical assessment including a health questionnaire and a detailed medical examination and pathology. How do I register to take part in the health check and surveillance program? To register for the health check and surveillance program, please contact: CFA Environment and Health Hotline T: 1800 628 616 or email the Health Surveillance Coordinator E: healthsurveillance@cfa.vic.gov.au. Further Information: Jed Gilbert Director, Employee Health, Safety and Wellbeing Department of Education and Training gilbert.jed.x@edumail.vic.gov.au

SPORT Straight shooting Armstrong aims for a long career Thomas Armstrong will enter this year’s Junior World Universal Trench championships with a better idea of what to expect and with raised expectations. Last year, he shocked himself and those at the championships by taking home the title. He has again qualified for the Australian team and will head over to Hungary in July. “Last year I didn’t know what to expect and I thought I’d try my best and maybe make the final,” he said. “This year I have something to aim for. I didn’t set any goals last year, but this year I will. “First is to the final and then maybe shoot a specific score.” The Plumpton teenager sealed his spot on the Australian team in early April by claiming the junior 2018 national universal trench title. It’s his first national title in that discipline. “I did it back to front,” he said. “Winning at the junior worlds and then the national title. “I was very nervous about the nationals this year and getting Australian team selection.

“I was happy with my performance, I was first in the juniors and third overall.” For half an hour, Armstrong held the Australian overall score record after shooting 196 out of 200. The total was then beaten, but he is still the equal Australian junior record holder. He said he would have loved to have the open age record, but was thrilled to have the junior one. Armstrong has had a big few months, also claiming gold with the Australian Junior team at the DTL championships. After Hungary, Armstrong plans on changing his discipline with a big focus on the future. “The next goal is the Olympics and Commonwealth Games,” he said. “Olympic discipline shooting is a bit different and I need to keep getting better. “Over the next four to five months I’ll change over and put all the eggs in one basket.” Tara Murray

Thomas Armstrong will be looking to defend his world title. (Shawn Smits)

Caroline Springs had to settle for a draw in Hockey Victoria’s Vic League 2 women’s competition at the weekend, with the Springers and MHSOB unable to find the back of the net. Despite the draw, the Springers remain on top of the ladder. Melton’s young side suffered an 8-0 loss to PEGS. The Caroline Springs men’s side lost 5-1 to MUHC in men’s metro A north-west. The Mustangs lost 3-0 to Maccabi in Vic League 3.

TAC Cup

The fast-finishing Western Jets have knocked off Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. The Jets kicked five goals in a row from the end of the third quarter to midway through the fourth quarter to break the game open. The Dragons kicked the last two goals, but it was too little to late, with the Jets winning 12.17 (89)-9.3 (57). Xavier O’Halloran was named the Jets’ best for a second straight week. The Jets’ girl’s side lost to the Dragons 8.9 (57)-1.1 (7).

Netball

Rams hold out hope

Darley has secured its first win of the Ballarat Netball League season. Facing Melton, the Devils led at every break on the way to the 44-39 win. Tarni Lopes was named the Devils’ best. Melton South took it up to Sunbury Lions early before the Lions found another gear on the way to a 57-37 win.

The scoreboards may not look pretty, but the improvement is coming for Rockbank in the Riddell District Football League. It’s been a tough start for the Rams, with three big losses in their first three matches. The most recent was on Saturday when they lost to Woodend-Hesket, 31.16 (202)-5.4 (34). Rams coach Leigh McInerney said the players were working their backsides off. “I think the gap has widened a bit between the higher and lower teams,” he said. “We’re looking to improve each week and we are improving. “The young guys are settling in, but our forward line has struggled. “We’ve had three to four changes each week, trying to get the mix right, but we’ve got a lack of depth.” McInerney said they were nowhere near playing their best football. 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 1, 2018

He said skills and decision-making were letting them down and other teams were making them pay for it. “There’s a bit of a lack of defensive run and they seem to get the ball through the middle too easy,” McInerney said. “Our guys have moments when they drop their heads, but it’s not their fault. They are busting their backsides.” The Rams’ best two players at the weekend were Ricky Cameron and Allan Greenwood. McInerney said they were leading the way of the younger players. “Allan showed where he is at with his footy on the weekend,” he said. “The first two games are not up to where he wants to be. “Along with Ricky they are our two best up-and-comers. We put it on them that they needed to step up a bit more on the weekend. We hold them in pretty high regard.” The Rams want a change of fortune this weekend against Broadford.

Like the Rams, they are 0-3 and have been on the wrong end of some big losses. “We definitely try to win every game, but realistically it’s a game we have to win,” McInerney said. “It will tell us where we are at as a club. “We haven’t had a hell of a lot of wins the last few years.” Diggers Rest won its second match with a hard-fought win against Riddell. It took until the final quarter for the Burras to break down the game against the win-less Bombers. The Burras kicked the only two goals of the final quarter to win, 12.13 (85)-9.13 (67) Taylor Hine was best on ground. For a second straight week, Melton Centrals gave up a lead in the second half, this time against Romsey. Centrals led by 18 points at half-time, but could only score two goals in the second half in the 13.11 (89)-10.5 (65) loss. Dylan Weir kicked four goals for Centrals, while Cooper Pepi was named their best.

A poor first quarter proved costly for Burnside Heights in Essendon District Football League division 2. The Bears trailed by 29 points at the first break, with both sides not making the most of their opportunities. The Bears were able to stay within touch, but not close enough as they lost 21.9 (135)-13.19 (97). Josh Covelli kicked six goals for the Bears. The Bears are fourth after three rounds with one win. Bloods shake off the nerves to nail a respectable win Melton entered Saturday’s game with reigning Ballarat Football League premier Darley wanting to win a bit of respect. They earned it with a shock win – and put themselves on the radar of other sides. The Bloods started the game stronger and finished better to win 13.8 (86)-8.8 (56). They got out to 36-point lead in the second quarter and an upset looked on the cards, but the Devils reduced the margin to 31 points at the main break. Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said they expected the Devils to hit back. Tymms said Darley coach Heath Scotland got his match-ups right, while his side went with what had been working for them. “It was a bit of a worry, being 36 points up,” he said. “They outplayed us in the third quarter.” The Devils’ injury concerns continued on from last week, with Jake Edwards finishing the game on the bench. Tymms said that one less rotation for the

opposition helped his side. But despite having an extra man, Tymms said they were still nervous entering the final quarter 12 points up. “We cramped up against Melton South the week before and we knew what Darley did the week before against Bacchus Marsh,” he said. “It was stressful at three-quarter time, but we made some moves and came away with the win.” The Bloods kicked the first four goals of the last quarter to secure the win. Ruckman Ben Archard was best on ground, with Braedan Kight, Matt Denham, Darren Haby and Jordyn Cotter kicking three goals apiece. Tymms said Brett McIntyre was strong down back and Malcolm Beck restricted the impact of Brian Graham. The win gave the Bloods a 2-0 start to the season. But Tymms said there was plenty of work ahead. “Darley being the benchmark and Melton

South is the rivalry, it’s a big start to the season,” he said. “We would have been happy with two wins from four games and we’ve already got that after two games. “We’ve got East Point and Sunbury Lions the next two weeks and it will test us for sure. “We have to respect anyone that we play as we’re coming from a fair bit back. We can’t take anyone lightly.” Bacchus Marsh had the bye. Tara Murray

Strikers on a roll in debut season

Melton South’s Daniel Leggett gets a clean kick away in the game against Sunbury. (Damian Visentini)

First victory slips away By Tara Murray Melton South was left to rue a missed opportunity against Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. The Panthers had their chances to seal their first win of the season early on against the Lions, but fell short at the final siren. Two late goals to Lions forward Grant Valles gave them the 13.9 (87)-9.16 (70) win. Panthers co-coach Ash Manning said there was a couple of key moments in which the Lions had been better and that proved the difference. The Panthers only led by 10 points at the main break, despite having 10 more scoring shots. “I thought we dominated the second quarter, and we kicked 5.7,” Manning said. “A few little incidents went against us or we did the wrong thing with a couple of undisciplined acts that probably hurt us, along with our goalkicking. “We missed a couple real easy ones that

might have put us three to four goals in front and might have dented the opposition, but as it turns out, we kept them in the game and they came over the top.” Manning said they got back to within four points in the final quarter and needed the next goal if they were going to get the win, but it didn’t happen. Ben Sortino, Reece Miles and Mark Lynch were the Panthers’ best in the loss. Manning said defenders Daniel Hillier and Lachlan Watkins were also among their best. He said it was tough for their defenders at the moment, as they lack size at that end of the ground. “We couldn’t defend the high ball in, we tried to,” he said. “Hiller played his guts out, but our backs were against the wall. “Cody Ogston, who played full-back last week, didn’t play and we were already a key defender down. “Craig Searle carried an injury into the game, but we had to risk him.

“Injuries aren’t an excuse, but we’re probably lacking a key defender and were found out.” Manning said the one positive out of the match was that their effort improved from the week before against Melton. “We certainly brought more effort this week which was pleasing,” he said. “Last week we were non-competitive and we weren’t in the game. We focused on a few things we wanted to do and I think we did them well. The effort was pleasing, but not the outcome we wanted.” The Panthers have a bye this weekend, before they face Bacchus Marsh. Manning said they were hoping to have one big inclusion for that match – Brendan Fevola should be back after serving a suspension. He said if Fevola had played at the weekend the result against Sunbury would have been different. “We had to put Mitch Golby at full forward. Probably my first four choices for full forward were out for one reason or another [on Saturday].”

It’s been a perfect start for Westside Strikers in FFV state league 5 west. Fielding a senior men’s team for the first time, the Strikers have won their first four games and stunned some other highly-rated teams. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said they hadn’t really expected their start to the season. “We knew it would be pretty tough with a brand new team,” he said. “The guys have gelled pretty well so far, but there’s still a long time to go. “We had a tough game against Moonee Valley who were also undefeated. We know what to expect now … we have to keep playing the way we have been.” Raniolo said the key to the strong start had been the way the team had gelled together. He said there had been an even spread of contributors not only on the scoreboard, but across all four games. With such a good start to the season, Raniolo said they had changed their expectations for the season. “I don’t think you’ll see the best of this team until round six or seven,” he said. “We don’t just want to make up the numbers, we want to make the best of a good start. “We would love to earn promotion in our first season. “The boys are very keen and have started well and it’s in their hands now. “They can’t let up and they know they have to keep going.” The Strikers had a bye at the weekend, and this week face Melton Phoenix. Raniolo said the bye came at a perfect time for them. “We have a few injuries and the extra week will help them. “We started training in January, so it’s been a long pre-season. “The bye will give us a break.” Melton Phoenix comes into the match on the back of a 1-0 loss to Moonee Valley Knights on Saturday. The Phoenix sit 10th after five rounds with one win. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills defeated North Melbourne Athletic 2-0. The Stallions sit in third place on the ladder with three wins and a draw. This week Spring Hills meet Surf Coast away. Tara Murray 43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 1, 2018

Centrals shoot for a win, forced to settle for a draw Melton Centrals have let slip an opportunity to grab their second win of the Riddell District Netball League season. Having split their opening two matches, Centrals faced reigning premier Romsey on Saturday in a close affair – no more than two goals separated the sides at the three breaks. The Redbacks were slightly better in the last quarter to bridge a two-goal deficit and force a 37-37 draw. Centrals coach Randy Pereira said it was a cracking game. “We had our chances,” he said. “When you have 12 more scoring shots you only need to hit two of those shots, you get the win, so it’s disappointing in that regard.” Pereira said Centrals’ shooting percentage was improving every week, with new goaler Katie Hepburn settling into the side. Hepburn shot 18 goals and Rebecca Morabito shot the other 19 goals. Hepburn was named Centrals’ best, along

with defenders Rachel Dovaston and Melissa Laird. “Katie hasn’t played for at least the last two years,” he said. “Shooting is one part of the game where you will struggle unless you are practising. She got her eye in from the second quarter and played better.” Pereira said that despite being unsure what to expect from his side before the start of the season, he was disappointed with the 1-1-1 start. “We probably should be 3-0,” he said. “We’re a fairly new side and four new players and they are starting to gel. “Coming from the unknown, we’re not overly happy with the games we should have won.” Centrals will this week meet Riddell, with centre Jess May unavailable. Riddell will go into the Centrals game on the back of a 51-37 loss to Diggers Rest.

Kathie Dicker was best on court, shooting 28 goals for Diggers Rest. The A-grade team was one of two Centrals sides to have draws on Saturday, with the under-19 side finishing even with the Redbacks. The B-grade and C-grade sides had good wins. In other A grade games, Rockbank suffered a shock loss to Woodend-Hesket. The Hawks came from behind at three-quarter time to win 54-39. Defender Danni Jane Umaki was named the best for the Rams, with Rebecca Hicks shooting 31 goals. Tara Murray

Lakers go back to basics By Lance Jenkinson Caroline Springs fans will need a little bit of patience. The Lakers thought they were ready to go after an encouraging pre-season under new coach Brodie Holland and a big first-up win over Albion, which was later taken away on a technicality, but consecutive losses to St Albans and Hoppers Crossing have forced a re-think. Perhaps the gelling of the team will need more time, particularly with a daunting road trip to come against undefeated ladder leader Werribee Districts this Saturday. “It will take a little bit of time,” Lakers football manager Marc Raak said. “How much time? I’m not really sure. “I think there was about eight new players in our side that have played about three games together, so it might take a little bit of adjustment, but hopefully it’s not too far away. “We just need to keep working hard on the track and I’m sure we’ll start to get some wins.” The connection was just not there for Caroline Springs in a disappointing 49-point loss to Hoppers Crossing at the Town Centre Oval on Saturday. The Lakers turned the ball over time and again and were punished severely for their errors. “We had a lot of opportunities, but we need to use the ball a bit better going deep inside 50,” Raak said. “We just need to get that little bit of polish to finish off because we’ve got some key forwards there that are at times not getting the opportunities.” It has been a frustrating start to the season for Caroline Springs. The Lakers only victory was taken away after they exceeded the allowable player points cap, which saw their score reset to zero and the four points shipped off to Albion. After chatting with the players about the points issue, Raak insists their reaction was that it would act as a spur rather than a cloud hovering over them for the remainder of the season. “It probably made us a bit more determined now to really strive through,” Raak said. “We want to show the competition that we’re not just going to take one good win and drop back. “We’ll keep fronting up.” There were some positives to come out of Caroline Springs’ disappointing loss to Hoppers Crossing. The move of Lewis Tudor to defence has been a winner so far. Tudor is unique in that he can play on talls and smalls. A ruckman last year, he found himself in 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 1, 2018

the last line of defence against Hoppers and nullified dangerous small forward Jordan Mead. “We thought Lewis’ job on him was superb,” Raak said.

“Lewis is one of the quickest at our football club, he can jump, he’s got pace and can close down really well. “It was a mismatch in height, but it reaped great results for us.”

It was a mixed night for Melton Thoroughbreds against Wallan Panthers in the Big V competition. All three Thoroughbreds sides faced the Panthers on Saturday, with two of the three coming away with wins. The men’s side continued its good form for a second straight win. The second quarter proved to be the difference as the Thoroughbreds outscored the Panthers 21-6. With the game in control, the Thoroughbreds extended the lead in the second half to win 89-58. Every player hit the scoreboard – Wol Wol Ngong top-scored with 15 points. The win keeps the Thoroughbreds in touch with the top teams following a poor start to the season. It was a tougher match for the women, who faced last year’s runners-up. The Panthers jumped out of the blocks and led by 16 points at the main break. It was a better second half by the Thoroughbreds but they weren’t able to close the gap enough, losing 68-55. Emily Attard continued her good form off the bench, top scoring for the Thoroughbreds with 14 points. She was the only Thoroughbreds player to reach double figures. The side sits 2-3 after five matches and ia in the middle of the pack. The youth league men’s side defeated the Panthers 84-76, before backing it up on Sunday with a 91-76 win against Maccabi Warriors. The Thoroughbreds are on top of the ladder with seven wins. Nissan favourite gets makeover By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

four-cylinder petrol engine producing 106kW of power at 6000rpm and 200Nm of torque at a rather high 4400rpm. The entry-level ST features a six-speed manual transmission, the other variants a Nissan Xtronic CVT.

The Nissan Qashqai has led something of a double life since its birth a decade ago when it first came Down Under as the Nissan Dualis. Since then, as well as shedding diesel power, the Japanese crossover has played the name game, reverting to its original global moniker. Now, says Nissan, at the bidding of buyers, the Qashqai has been upgraded and the range simplified. Included are grades from entry-level ST to mid-range ST-L and top-end Ti. Because of manufacturing issues at the plant in England, the Ti has been held back until later this year, being replaced by a N-TEC. Entry to the new Qashqai comes via the ST six-speed manual, priced at $26,490, plus on road costs. A continuously variable automatic adds $2500 to the price. The Qashqai ST-L comes with CVT only for $32,990, while the N-TEC CVT can be had for $36,490. The Ti CVT, we are told, will hit the market at $37,990 in the middle of the year. On test was a Qashqai ST-L CVT at $32,990.

Safety

The new Qashqai takes advantage of Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility technology, which includes Intelligent Emergency Braking with Forward Collision Warning. New are Lane Departure Warning and Hill Start Assist. Intelligent Around View is part of the ST-L, N-TEC and Ti package, while the latter pair add Intelligent Park Assist, Intelligent Driver Alert, Blind Spot Warning and High Beam Assist. N-TEC and Ti add Rear Cross Traffic Alert, plus Adaptive Front Lighting.

Driving

Styling

A facelift includes the latest version of the Nissan V-motion grille, framing the new company badge. The latter is now a flat hologram style, which incorporates part of the car’s Intelligent Emergency Braking system, allowing radar waves to pass through it. The radiator grille surround houses the front camera taking part of the picture for the Intelligent Around View monitor, Nissan’s 360-degree parking system, standard on the ST-L. Flanking the grille are halogen headlamps, with daytime running lights consisting of nine LEDs (previously six) and a thicker lens, adding a more modern, premium look. Full

Nissan Qashqai upgrade has brought subtle changes to looks and a range of new technology. (Supplied)

LEDs carry a new boomerang DRL design, extending right across the top of the lamp.

Interior

There’s a flat-bottom steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in or out. The smaller hub and three-spoke design have increased the upper segment by 17 per cent, offering the driver a better view of instrument dials. The front seats have been redesigned on ST-L, giving additional support and more space between driver and passenger. Seat backs are

thinner, giving more legroom in the rear.

Infotainment

DAB+ digital radio is standard on ST-L grade. The seven-inch touch screen presents satellite navigation clearly and in an app-like format, while hands-free phone operation is improved by the use of a microphone integrated into the overhead lamp.

Engines / transmissions

The Qashqai uses a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated

The cabin takes five adults in relative comfort, while a versatile load space of 430 litres can be extended to 1598 litres with the rear 60:40 rear seat backs folded. The Qashqai is surprisingly nippy, the engine and the CVT combining to produce a smooth journey through the rev range. It sacrifices some efficiency by stepping through changes under hard acceleration. Xtronic uses Intelligent Engine Braking to assist the brakes and deliver smooth deceleration. Fuel consumption on test was recorded at 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway and between 10 and 12 litres per 100 in city and suburbs.

Summing up

We have always had a soft spot for the Dualis, the upgraded Qashqai does little to dim this view.
