Toilet ‘rights’ row By Laura Michell A Kurunjang mum is taking Melton Secondary College to the Australian Human Rights Commission in the belief it is denying students “a basic human right”. Sarah Russell has lodged a complaint with the commission over the school’s practice of locking its toilets during class times. The Department of Education and Training says the school has five sets of toilets, two of which are locked during class times and opened at recess, lunch and before and after school, and three sets that are open at all times. A mediation session between Ms Russell, the school and the education department will be held at the commission on May 21.

Ms Russell says students, including her son Matthew, 15, are required to ask for permission to use a toilet during class time. She says that on one occasion, Matthew was unable to use the toilets during lunchtime because they had not been unlocked. “The only available toilet to use was next to the sick bay … he was stopped and told that he was not to use the toilet,” Ms Russell said. “When he explained that the other toilets were still locked, he was told to find the principal to open them. “My son has haemophilia, a bleeding disorder that affects his joints. At times, my son has trouble walking due to his condition as he is prone to joint bleeds. My son should not have to walk across the school having to ask permission to use a toilet and have someone determine if he has a good reason.” Ms Russell said she lodged the complaint to force the school to unlock the toilets. “I don’t believe students should be stopped from using the toilets,” she said. “I just want the toilets open and accessible to students at all times. It’s a basic human right.” A department spokesman said it was committed to providing an inclusive environment that respects the dignity and rights of all students. “The department is currently working with the school and family to resolve a complaint made to the Australian Human Rights Commission,” the spokesman said.

RSPCA probes cats in pram case A woman is alleged to have wheeled a pram with a rubbish bag containing two live cats and kittens around Melton for three days before handing them over to cat rescue volunteers. Nathan Miles, of Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue, has appealed for information about the incident, which happened earlier this month, on the group’s Facebook page. He said that he was contacted by “concerned and distraught” staff members at a local
supermarket reporting the woman’s behaviour. “It was alleged that the woman … had brought a cat into the store in a baby pram tied up in a black plastic garbage bag attempting to get someone to take it,” Mr Miles wrote. “We understand that for three days this poor cat was contained cruelly and illegally. The cat had no access to food, water, a litter tray or fresh air.” He said the woman later returned with another cat and some kittens which were all intercepted by the supermarket staff and a

New mentor program a cut above Young Brimbank scissor slingers are learning from the best through a new training program. As part of a council pilot program, Just Kutz, eight young people are being mentored by experienced barbers to give them a look at an industry that is experiencing a re-birth. Axe Barbers in Sunshine and Grindstone Barbers at Watergardens Town Centre are working with the budding barbers. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said it was important to give those with aspirations in the industry the opportunity to learn. “We’re excited to be running a mentorship-based program with young people and local businesses in the Brimbank area for the first time,” Cr Giudice said. “Young people taking part in Just Kutz will have the opportunity to get a feel for the barbershop industry and also gain some useful business skills in a hands-on environment. “What sets this apart from doing work experience, or even a pre-apprenticeship, s that the young people will build a relationship with their mentor, who will guide them through the industry and teach them personal skills.” Just Kutz was developed in response to a need expressed by young people in Brimbank not interested in school and other education pathways, but interested in barbering. The program was created for young people aged 16 to 25 who live, work, study or socialise in Brimbank, and recognises the current lack of formal education available in barbering in VCAL and VET. “It’s a great way to learn more about the business side of the barbershop industry and to pick up a range of useful skills – such as how to present yourself professionally, deliver good customer service and handle money, all of which are useful in just about any career,” Cr Giudice said. The program will run through May. For more information, contact Brimbank Youth Services on 9249 4000. Ewen McRae

Ballan revamp streets ahead Ballan’s main strip is shaping up as streetscape works continue. Most of the paving works along Inglis Street is complete, with the installation of street furniture and some minor ancillary works to come. Asphalting was completed and roads are open. Council’s infrastructure general manager Phil Jeffrey said the completion provided the community with insight into what the final finished product will look like. Mr Jeffrey said that heavy rains over the past weekend stalled night works. “As part of the works, council is installing underground conduits that will future-proof the street for the potential undergrounding of electricity,” he said. “Installation works of this nature may slow the progress of the works but will definitely provide a better long-term outcome.” He said the council and contractors received positive feedback from the community and traders on the works so far. “We are making every effort to expedite these works, which will enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the street and deliver a great outcome for the Ballan community. “Council and its contractor will continue to work with traders and the community at large to minimise disruption and accommodate needs as much as possible.” Residents are encouraged to use the public carpark located in Steiglitz Street, between Fisken and Stead streets, while works are being undertaken.

Adam Miller is facing a mammoth challenge – Melton to Wodonga by foot. And he reckons he may be a bit under-done. The father of two will embark on a 340-kilometre charity run to the New South Wales border on May 26 to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Mr Miller said be made a promise to himself he would give back to the hospital in which his son, Lucas, spent much of his early years. “My son was born with an umbilical hernia and intestinal problems,” Mr Miller said. “We spent a lot of time in and out of emergency. Whenever we took him to Royal Children’s, we were always put at ease, offered help and reassured that everything was OK.” Mr Millar’s online fundraising campaign has already raised more than $1300 towards a lofty $10,000 goal. “It was originally going to be a ride, but I’m better on my feet,” Mr Miller said. “Training has involved a lot of running. I’ve recently been doing the local parkrun events, and have been tracking long runs to Sunbury and back.” He’ll start from Melton, head for Lancefield, Seymour, Benalla, Euroa, Chilton, Wangaratta and, finally, Wodonga. Mr Miller said about 80 per cent of his trek would be along dirt roads, the rest will be on sealed roads. “Melton to Seymour is all uphill,” he said. “I have trained for a while but I might be a bit under prepared.” Mr Miller’s wife, Laken and children Lucas, 4 and Chloe, 1, will cheer him on from their Melton home, while his support crew includes his dad and two brothers. Ravenhall tip fight far from over By Ewen McRae Brimbank council will appear before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal next month to continue its opposition to the expansion of the Ravenhall tip. The council lodged an application with VCAT in late 2017 to review the works approval application issued by the Environment Protection Authority to allow the expansion of the landfill site, however on April 10 this year the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG) lodged a request
to have Brimbank City Council’s case ‘struck out’. MWRRG is a statutory body responsible for co-ordinating and facilitating the delivery of waste management and resource recovery across metropolitan Melbourne. It will argue Brimbank’s interests are not affected by the tip expansion, that the application is beyond the third party review rights, and that the application is an abuse of process. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the council was disappointed with MWRRG, and that council’s application to VCAT should be
heard. “Our community is strongly opposed to the expansion of the Ravenhall tip, as is this council,” Cr Giudice said. “Council’s legal appeal against the tip is on the grounds that the expansion is contrary to state government policy. “This is because the expansion will extend the life of the landfill and potentially divert investment from alternative forms of waste disposal and innovation. “The expansion reinforces Victoria’s reliance on landfills as a method of waste disposal over
the long term, which is contrary to future direction for waste management in Victoria. “Council has had enough of the state government’s continued reliance on landfill as a solution to Melbourne’s waste needs. As a state we need to get serious on sustainable waste and resource recovery technologies. “The recent budget announcement of $30.4 million over four years from the Sustainability Fund to implement a waste and resource recovery framework is not adequate to bring about real change.” The case will be heard on June 1.
Quentin’s top dog When Stuart Macdonald purchased Quentin the German shepherd off Gumtree in 2013, a remarkable journey began. Most dog owners claim their dogs are the best, but Quentin has the awards to back up such a claim. “I purchased Quentin when he was 10 months old,” Stuart says. “I didn’t know it at the time, but I was actually his fourth owner in that short space of time. “The lady I purchased him off had done a few shows with him and suggested I continue it, so my wife and I did and haven’t looked back.” Quentin and Stuart first tasted victory at the Royal Melbourne Show. “We’ve competed in show since the start, with him winning the Best German Shepherd at the 2015 and 2017 Royal Melbourne shows,” Stuart says. “He also won best in trial in obedience overall in the 2017 Royal Melbourne Show.”
The duo took a road trip to Adelaide last month for the German Shepherd National Show and Trial. “He came second in obedience in his class and ninth out of 25 in open dog in his class, which saw him win the trophy for best dual-performance dog,” Stuart says. Quentin has also been recognised as a Grand Champion after accumulating 1000 points through his many competitions. Tate Papworth

Home detox gains momentum By Esther Lauaki Melton residents have been busy detoxing their homes of 1.32 tonnes of dangerous chemicals for safe disposal at transfer stations in the past month. Sustainability Victoria’s free Detox Your Home service was established to make it easy for residents to get rid of household, shed and garage chemicals. This year, 30.6 tonnes of chemicals were collected from nine sites run by councils across Victoria.
Sustainability Victoria chief executive Stan Krpan said the results had been pleasing. “People were sitting on an incredible amount of chemicals,” he said. “Disposing of them through the program means they’d be disposed of, or recycled, in the most appropriate way. “There are restrictions on the types and volumes of materials that can be taken to Detox Your Home events. “If you don’t know what to do with old chemicals, batteries, fluorescent tubes, paint

and other dangerous goods, contact your local council or Sustainability Victoria.” He said residents didn’t have to live in a municipality in which a Detox Your Home Collection was being held, but bookings were essential for some sites.
Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said regular clear-outs helped minimise potentially dangerous chemicals kept in homes. “It’s vital to dispose of them properly,” she said of the program last year. “Tipping these poisons down the sink or into drains can be dangerous to human health if it gets into our water system … the environmental impacts can be devastating. “Protect the health of your family and the environment by taking advantage of this great service.”
Respect reaps rewards Parents will be learning alongside their children at an upcoming forum about relationship building. Students at Brookside P- 9 College have been participating in the Respectful Relationships initiative which focuses on resilience and learning what their rights are. The community, parents and caregivers have been invited to a forum at the school on May 28 which will look at the impact the program is having from participants as well as professionals. Principal Simon Sherlock said the initiative matches the school’s values which include respect, support, teamwork and achievement. “We didn’t need convincing that this was the right work for us,” Mr Sherlock said. “We have become a lead school in our area since implementing the Respectful Relationships program in August last year. The program is now being implemented in its entirety as a whole school approach.”
He said that the program’s main aim was to prepare young people to face challenges by developing problem-solving skills and building empathy, resilience and confidence. “The response from both our teachers and students has been overwhelmingly positive,” Mr Sherlock said. “We are starting to use a common language and students are becoming aware of who they are and how to interact with others in a respectful way.” The free forum at Brookside P-9 College runs from 6-7.30pm. Convicts in the family
LeadWest’s budget blast
By Esther Lauaki
(Marco De Luca)
Janeen O’Connell wanted to bring to light a dark “family secret” she says has been kept too long. The Strathtulloh author recently released her first novel, No Room for Regret, which is based on stories of four of her Tasmanian convict ancestors. “I was researching family history and discovered four convict ancestors,” O’Connell said. “They’re all on my grandfather’s side of the family and, sadly, they were kept buried, literally and figuratively for more than 200 years. No one knew anything about them. “I decided that they’d been buried long enough, so I started writing the book.” O’Connell, a retired Kurunjang Secondary College teacher, said she spent two years researching and a year writing the book about her ancestors James Cullen, Elizabeth Bartlet, James Tedder and James Blay. Her descendents were convicted of crimes such as extortion and theft – one was sentenced to death for stealing a pair of boots. Upon their release, they went on to apply their skills as trades people in a new colony on Norfolk Island. “I’m pleased that I found them,” O’Connell said. “I’m not proud of the crimes they committed, but I’m proud of the contributions that they made to society once they were emancipated … like helping to build homes, buildings and establish farms to feed a new colony in Norfolk Island.” O’Connell’s next book, about the women in her family, is scheduled to be released later this year. The state budget has failed to provide for the booming population in the western suburbs, according to advocacy group LeadWest. The budget, which was handed down on May 1, featured $5.6 million for the second stage of Burnside Primary School and $4.43 million for upgrades at Melton West Primary School. No other Melton-based projects were funded. LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said the government had under invested in the fastest-growing region. “Melbourne’s west is growing by 30,000 people a year, which is the fastest growth rate in Victoria,” he said. “Unfortunately, this year’s budget has failed to acknowledge this growth. Slower-growing regions are receiving more funding in this year’s budget than we’re getting in the west. “The west’s population will more than double in the next 30 years … we need significant investment to be put in place now to realise this opportunity.” Mr Rowley said the budget should have included more money for schools, as well as funding projects that ease congestion across the western suburbs. “The $2.2 billion suburban road upgrades package at the centre of this budget does nothing for the west, despite our huge population growth,” he said. There were still huge parts of the region with large and growing deficits in road infrastructure, he said. Laura Michell

Josip already a winner
Albanian land decision sought
By Esther Lauaki Josip Hercog is living his dream. The young sports fan from Fraser Rise is bound for Russia in June to attend the FIFA World Cup where he will have media accreditation to follow one of his home teams, Croatia. Josip is leaving in a week to travel via Croatia to visit family and celebrate his 21st birthday before he embarks on his first big gig as a fledgling journalist. He was two years into a degree in journalism at Deakin University when he landed a job at a Croatian newspaper reporting on local and international sport in January.
This is a dream come - Josip Hercog true for me
This month he received confirmation from the football federation, after a lengthy application process, he would be receiving a media pass for the World Cup – so he deferred completion of his studies for the “opportunity of a lifetime”. “This is a dream come true for me,” he said. “I dreamed of playing football all my life. I played for a number of years when I was young, however after a number of knockbacks I decided to think of other things that I could do. “I love sport so I knew that I wanted to follow sport.” He’s being mentored by veteran television journalist Peter Hitchener. “I work and volunteer at six different jobs to get … journalism experience.” Josip will be in the media box at two Croatia games.

Members of the western suburbs Albanian community are awaiting answers from the state government on plans to compulsorily acquire land bought more than 25 years ago for a community centre. The parcel of land, at 1352-1402 Western Highway in Rockbank, was purchased in 1989 by the Albanian Australian Community Association to build a cultural hub. But nothing has been built on the land since, with the Victorian Planning Authority and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning exploring acquisition of the land for a regional park. The state government and Melton council are working with surrounding landowners to decide the final boundary of the proposed Kororoit Regional Park, which is likely to be between Clarke and Sinclairs roads. Melton council decided at its April meeting to write to the planning department to ask that it define the boundaries of the planned regional park to provide some “certainty in respect of the future use of the land”. Albanian association secretary Adzi Ceni said that the community had been left in limbo waiting for answers. “We want to have a determination as to what’s going to happen with the land,” Mr Ceni said. “It gives us an idea of where we’re headed.” Esther Lauaki

By Alesha Capone and Ewen McRae An arsonist who caused more than 431,000 square metres of grassland in Melbourne’s north and west to go up in flames, has been denied permission to appeal his prison sentence. Mark Ganon, 41, faced the Supreme Court earlier this month requesting the right to appeal. The court heard that between January 4 to 14 last year, Ganon started between 20 to 30 fires. Within the first five days of his offending, Ganon lit fires in Mount Ridley, Donnybrook, Keilor North, Calder Park and Sunshine West. On January 10, he lit five fires in Keilor, Laverton North and Sunshine West. The blaze in Laverton North burned 161,874 square metres of grassland. On January 13, Ganon lit fires in Sunshine West and Keilor Downs that burned more than 60,000 square metres of grassland. The next day, Ganon started fires in Sunshine West, Cairnlea and Keilor Downs, the latter in grassland behind the Keilor Downs police station. The court heard Ganon started the fires by attaching weights to lit sparklers he threw from his vehicle. Police later observed Ganon driving a vehicle, with stolen registration plates. CCTV footage had identified a similar vehicle as being involved in the fires. Gannon was arrested on January 16 and found to be in possession of a small quantity of methylamphetamine.
He faced the County Court last year, where he pleaded guilty to six charges of intentionally causing a bushfire, possessing a drug of dependence, handling stolen goods, committing an indictable offence while on bail, resisting an emergency worker, unlicensed driving and using an unregistered motor vehicle. In September last year, he was sentenced to five years in prison, with a non-parole period of three years and four months. During the request to appeal the sentence the Supreme Court heard Ganon had a number of prior convictions dating back to 1993, but this was the first time he had been convicted of arson-related offences. In responding to Ganon’s appeal, Supreme Court Justices David Beach and Phillip Priest said that although no one was injured as a result of Ganon’s actions, some of the fires he started burned close to residential properties and caused traffic delays on freeways. “The applicant’s complaints are totally devoid of merit,” they said. “His offending involved multiple attempts to light multiple fires. The damage he caused was not insignificant. The potential for far greater damage, injury or loss of life was high.” They said that the sentence was not manifestly excessive, and that a longer sentence could easily be argued. “Far from being wholly outside the range of sentencing options available to the judge, the sentences and orders for cumulation imposed by the judge were, if anything, lenient,” they said.

Cupboard of support Students at Kurunjang Secondary College have launched a “self-service cupboard” making it easier for their fellow students to access personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes and deodorants. The cupboard is an initiative between students and staff at the school and will be stocked with essential hygiene products as well as quick meals. The initiative is being trialled with the
school’s year 12 students, who are hoping the community will donate items to the cupboard. Principal John Mitsinikos said the cupboard aimed to teach students about the importance of helping others. Anyone interested in donating to the cupboard should contact 9743 9211. Laura Michell

MY PLACE Since moving to Brimbank 15 years ago Neil Hunichen has become an active member of the community. He spoke with Tate Papworth about The Lions Club, Melbourne Airport and cycling. I have lived in Sydenham for the past 15 years after living in Gisborne for over 20 years. The decision to move to Brimbank was primarily based on the significant amount of time I was spending travelling to and from work around the CBD. What do you like best about the area? Its close proximity to Macedon Ranges, Sunbury, Diggers Rest and the CBD. The Victoria State Park at the Organ Pipes, the Brimbank community owned Sydenham Park and Brimbank Park, including Horseshoe Bend Park. There’s also good public transport within 10 minutes walk from where I live, great shopping centres and great recreational facilities. Would could be done to improve the area? Better connectivity of its cycling trails along the linear trails connecting to the Maribyrnong River trail, without having to close busy traffic in Sunshine Avenue and Green Gully Road. VicRoads needs to consider providing an under road access path so cyclists can safely get to Brimbank Park from Sydenham via Taylor’s Lakes cycling trails. I also think Sydenham Road has been very neglected by VicRoads and the Brimbank council since Watergardens Station has been built.
Tell us about your involvement with the Lions Club. I’ve been a member of this very small, but extremely active community service club for the past six years. I’m currently the club’s president. I’m privileged to have a great team of passionate board members and members that give so much of their time to support the club’s activities. I understand you’re heavily involved with Sydenham residents concerned about Melbourne Airport’s expansion? Sydenham and Brimbank residents deserve more from this large multinational corporate citizen and the future of Sydenham Park must be considered far more favourably in their environmental, local flora and fauna development planning. Planning consultants need to take a closer look at what Heathrow is doing for their local community with their third runway development plans. You’re also a keen cyclist? I’m vice president of the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre (BBEC). I have developed and facilitated the bicycle transition “off training wheels” course. We have run four very successful courses so far, with many more scheduled throughout the year.
(Marco De Luca)

New use for old wood Felled trees that made way for the Ballarat line upgrade will be re-used at Pinkerton Forest for native animals to make their home. Logs from trees, mostly sheoaks, which were removed for construction work on the rail line, will be placed strategically around the forest among indigenous plants to encourage wildlife to nest. Regional Rail Revival director Mark Havryluk said that it was a joint initiative between the revival consortium, Western Water and Pinkerton Landcare and Environment Group (PLEG). “It was necessary to remove some trees to make way for new tracks and infrastructure as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade and we’ve worked with the local community to ensure
the trees can be used to benefit the local environment,” Mr Havryluk. “Construction on the Ballarat Line Upgrade is on track and once it is complete, the project will boost service frequency and improve reliability for passengers.” He said that the trees removed were in the direct line of new tracks or station infrastructure being built. Where possible, construction methods and design were changed to reduce the need for tree and vegetation removal. PLEG secretary Daryl Akers said the land between Pinkerton Forest and Bush’s Paddock in Mt Cottrell had been rehabilitated by volunteers to create a wildlife corridor. Esther Lauaki

Natalie Hutchins places the time capsule. (Marco De Luca)
Capsule’s long farewell The thoughts and dreams of young minds were frozen in time last week when a time capsule was placed into Melton Highway’s newest road bridge. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins joined members of the Melton Highway level crossing removal team to seal the container inside one of the bridge’s concrete beams. Rather than have a future date for its re-opening, this time capsule-with-a-twist is designed to last until the bridge is replaced or removed. Ms Hutchins said it was a nice twist on tradition. “We’re confident that this new six-lane road bridge will stand the test of time, but if it is ever upgraded again, this capsule will reveal a fascinating moment in time,” she said.
“I’m thrilled to see our younger generations getting involved in these infrastructure projects, with this time capsule allowing students to let their imaginations run wild.” The contents of the capsule, which includes “letters to the future” and artwork produced by students from the nearby Emmaus Catholic Primary School, are enclosed in zip-lock bags for protection. The bridge beam design allows the container to be placed inside without compromising structural integrity. The sealing of the bridge’s beams marked another construction milestone for Melton Highway’s northern road bridge, which is set to be completed by the end of the year. Tate Papworth

Senior drivers expo
A STARWEEKLY FEATURE
Make sure your driving future is on the road to safety Senior Drivers Expos are a free initiative of RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, with four held each year. They are open to anyone in the Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham areas who are retired or are thinking about retirement. The next Senior Drivers Expo will be on Saturday, June 16, at Central Park Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing, with free morning tea and light lunch provided. Early registration is recommended as places are limited – contact Lynette on 9742 7534 to register and for all further details. RoadSafe Westgate chair Jim Giddings says his road safety group is committed to supporting older drivers to continue driving longer and more safely. “We can all be better drivers with a few simple things,” he says, “like keeping up with new road laws, making sure our health is as good as can be, getting rid of bad driving habits and keeping our cars in good condition. “The expo gives senior drivers the opportunity for a free and confidential one-on-one session with one of the three registered driving instructors in attendance. This is designed to identify any short-cut habits drivers may have adopted over the years of driving.” Participants also get a free, confidential once-over of their vehicles and advice from professionals such as VicRoads roadworthy officers about how to keep their cars in roadworthy condition. As well, each participant receives: • Specialist advice on taking care of tyres from a VicRoads tyre expert. • Updates on health, medicines and driving, and newer road rules. • Opportunities to ask question of the police road law specialists – the Highway Patrol. • A free Senior Drivers Expo pack that includes a reusable carry bag, copies of Senior Drivers Handbook and Driving in Victoria: Rules & Responsibilities, plus other relevant information. This is an opportunity to have a free and confidential check on your driving technique and get vehicle safety information and support to drive away with confidence. When: Saturday, June 16, 2018. Where: Central Park Community Centre, 80 Lonsdale Circuit, Hoppers Crossing. Time: 9.45am-2.30pm. Bring: Your car, notebook, pen. Registration required. Inquiries: Lynette 9742 7534.
In the context of an aging population, older road user safety will continue to be a key concern for an ever increasingly large percentage of the Victorian community. Therefore, as a priority, RoadSafe Westgate promotes and organises best pratice older driver programs.

I didn’t realise agents like Rachel from Harcourts were possible. She is honest, patient, very hardworking, understanding, punctual and highly knowledgeable. She made me feel safe and confident in her direction and leadings and was always available for support and direction along every step. From her organising and co-ordinating trades for me to get the house ready for sale, to fighting to get the best possible price for me. She has been heaven sent. I’m not just recommending Rachel but the whole Harcourts team - if you’re selling a property anywhere near their office, my recommendation is to look no further than Rachel and the team! Hands down Rachel is excellent, the best in the field!!!

Detailed planning is the key to winning your dream rental property Despite perceptions that the rental market is somehow rigged – particularly in large cities such as Sydney and Melbourne – agents and advocates say ordinary Australians stand a good chance of renting in 2018. If you are willing to take care during the application process, you might be surprised by what you can secure, writes Dan F. Stapleton for Domain. 1. Always write a cover letter Few agents ask for one, but including a cover letter with your application can dramatically improve your chances of securing a rental, especially if the landlord reads it. Make it a good story. Tell why you’re the best person for the property. A little story about yourself will help your cause.
3. Apply online if you can Scanning your hard-copy documents and completing an online application form may be irksome and time-consuming, but for agents it’s a godsend. Most online application forms also include a section for additional comments, so make sure you use it. The standard form often asks applicants to explain why they like the property in question, and it can be the first thing agents go to in the application because it gives them a better indication of who they’re dealing with.
(iStock)
2. Gather everything you’ll need – and then some Providing ample references and other documents from the outset can also give you an advantage over less organised applicants. Including two current payslips, a personal or work reference and completion of 100 points of ID can impress.
4. Be ready to pay your deposit Having your application approved does not guarantee that the agent will hold the property for you. Delaying payment of your deposit by even a few hours can be risky. Agents don’t want
to lose other applicants by waiting for a deposit to be paid. 5. Choose the most suitable month to apply The start of the year can be slow with many on holidays, so If you’d like to maximise
your options and can afford to wait until later in the year, you’ll find the market returning to normal levels – and there may be an opportunity to pick up a bargain rental that didn’t lease during the early year rush.
Accelerating success.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir urges the west to give the crow a go One For The Crow is in a rather sleepy strip of shops – other than a cafe, there’s dance and martial arts operations and a few others more anonymous. Its neighbourhood – in and around Dobson Reserve – is itself rather sleepy and certainly not known for commercial activity of any kind. But the west – inner, outer, inbetween – is all changing so fast, so why not residential Maidstone for a cafe? One For The Crow is vegan – though we are very happy to see regular milk available for coffee. And it is very, very kid-friendly. It’s a lovely place, with a modest plant nursery going at the front and a handful of outdoor tables. For all its vegan-ness, our menu choices are the sort of thing found in cafes all over. My friends choose the Thai curry veg pie. It is, of course, a Ka Pie – and it goes down a treat. She likes the pasta-pesto-spinach salad, too. Though she is firmly of the opinion a sprinkling of crumbled feta would make it even better. My waffle dish ($16) is good. It comes with house-made nutella, maple syrup, caramelised banana and soy ice-cream. A most excellent soba noodle bowl ($16) – enjoyed on a previous, reconnaissance visit – rather more reflects One For The Crow’s vegan credentials. It’s packed with marinated tofu, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, spinach, pickled daikon
ONE FOR THE CROW Address: 9 Commercial Street, Maidstone Phone: 0420 275 747 and kimchi, and dressed with a tahini-miso concoction. Every mouthful is a delight. Our coffees are fine, too. One For The Crow appears to have quickly made itself an indispensable and treasured part of its community. The locals have every reason to be stoked.

SPORT Errant Devils win in scrappy conditions Darley returned to the winners’ list with a hard-fought, low-scoring win against Lake Wendouree. It was a scrappy game in wet and windy conditions and the Devils had the better of the game. If not for poor goalkicking the margin could have been much bigger than the 5.15 (45)-4.3 (27) final scoreline. The Devils led by 10 points at quarter-time and 19 points at the main break. The Devils were wasteful in front of goal in the second half, kicking 2.8, but it didn’t matter as the Lakers were unable to close the gap. It was all single goalkickers for the Devils and Jacob Zeestraten was named best on ground. The win gives the Devils a 2-2 record, having lost to Melton and been on different ends of thrillers against Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury Lions. Melton suffered a second straight thrilling loss, this time against the Sunbury Lions.
Playing under lights in difficult conditions, goals were a rarity. Scores were level at half-time and neither side could find the goals in the third, kicking three points for the quarter between them. The Lions kicked the first goal of the last quarter to hit the front, before the Bloods responded. Jack Landt’s second goal of the game sealed the Lions’ win 5.9 (39)-4.7 (31). Braedan Kight kicked half of the Bloods goals. Jack Walker was named the Bloods’ best in the loss, along with Jaycob Hickey and Lachlan Walker. Bacchus Marsh had to come from behind against Melton South in an injury disrupted match. Play was stopped in the first quarter, with an ambulance called to attend to the Cobras’ Jake Owen who was knocked out. Once play resumed, it was the Panthers, who were coming off the bye, who looked the better
team in the first half, leading by as much as 23 points in the second quarter. The Panthers kicked just one goal in the second half and the Cobras over-ran them, winning 10.21 (81)-7.9 (51). Aaron Willitts kicked five goals for the Cobras, with Liam Mullen and Billy Griffiths named the Cobras’ best. Mitchell Golby kicked three goals for the Panthers in the continued absence of Brendan Fevola. After serving a suspension, Fevola missed the Cobras game through injury. Lachlan Watkins was the pick of the Panthers, named in the best for a third time. All teams have the week off this weekend, with the AFL Victoria Community Championships. The Ballarat Football League will face Goulburn Valley on Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Tara Murray
Jets back in winners’ circle By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets ticked all the boxes in their best four-quarter performance of the TAC Cup season. The Jets briefly moved into the top four on Saturday night after their commanding 24-point win over Geelong Falcons at the Williamstown Cricket Ground, before settling into fifth spot by the end of the round. Jets’ coach Torin Baker was thrilled with his side’s showing after some patchy recent form. “The Falcons had a pretty strong team in, so I’m just proud with the way the boys played to be honest,” he said. “It was a really windy day, which is typical down at Williamstown, the conditions were really hard to play in, but I thought we handled them really well. “Everything we planned for tended to come to fruition. “The boys didn’t overuse the footy, they got it back in their forward half, they were really good around the ball and their pressure to maintain the footy in the forward half was excellent.” Stefan Radovanovic was again at the forefront of the win. Not even a finger injury could slow Radovanovic down as he compiled another stellar showing in the Jets’ midfield. “He actually had to come off the field in the second quarter with a finger injury that needed some treatment and got some protection on it to play the rest of the half,” Baker said. “His second half was just as good a footy as you could hope from him. “He’s had a very good start to the year and a very good TAC Cup career to date.” Zak Butters and Xavier O’Halloran kept up their usual high standards with some fine work in the midfield. Daly Andrews, a smooth moving wing/ half-back with polished delivery, shone once again. Darcy Cassar’s three goals were huge in tough scoring conditions on a day when the Jets only managed nine goals to the Falcons’ seven, despite having 14 more scoring shots. Cassar is beginning to cement his place in the team. “Last week he had a bit of a ‘nearly’ game, won plenty of the footy and didn’t quite execute on the day, but he’s working hard at his footy and it was pleasing to see him finish off his good work this week,” Baker said. “He played four games last year as a 16 year old, so he’s been a talented boy that we’ve known about for a fair while.” Western Jets will feature in a blockbuster against third-placed Oakleigh Chargers at Warrawee Park on Sunday morning. 40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 15, 2018

Cobras fit for a tilt at the top A strong pre-season and extra depth has Bacchus Marsh confident it can match it with the best sides in the Ballarat Netball League. Coming off their best season in years, finishing seventh, the Cobras have made a real focus of trying to bridge the gap to the top sides. The Cobras finished one spot outside finals, but were four games behind sixth. Cobras coach Michael Saker said they had put in extra work in the pre-season. “The fitness levels have impressed and we are running out the four quarters now,” he said. “The stronger teams are now in reach … they haven’t been the last few years. “We have lapses of concentration, but we can work on that.” The Cobras have started the season 2-1. On Saturday, they accounted for Melton South 30-28. After trailing at quarter-time, the Cobras forced their way to the front in the second term. While they were able to stay there, it was a tough battle until the end. With their wins coming against lower ranked sides, the Cobras got an indication of where they sit in their loss against North Ballarat City. North, which played in last year’s grand final, won the match with the Cobras 46-38. “It was quite pleasing, but a little disappointing, too,” Saker said. “A couple of slip-ups were the difference.” The Bacchus Marsh squad has a number of players from last season, but depth has been added. Shooter Stacey Jeffrey and mid-courter Jaleesa Morris have returned to the club and former Melton coach Katie Kakoschke adds experience in defence. Darci Tierney will share her time between the A and B-grade sides. Saker said the additions provided plenty of options. “There’s a lot more speed in the mid-court and our defence is stronger,” he said. “When we start to hit our goals, we’ll take that next step.” In other results, Melton was no match for Sunbury Lions, losing 64-24, while Darley was beaten by Lake Wendouree 48-29.

Thoroughbreds ride high, then pipped at the post It was a mixed weekend for Melton Thoroughbreds in Big V women’s division 2. Looking to get two wins and move into the top five, the Thoroughbreds had two challenges ahead of them. First up was against Coburg Giants on Saturday night, followed by Mornington Breakers on Sunday. In the end, they split the results, recording a 76-71 win over the Giants, before falling 76-66 to the Breakers. Thoroughbreds playing coach Lauren Olcorn said they thought both matches were winnable. She said the biggest challenge for her side against the Giants was their new import Saule Kontautaite. “They had a new import and it was her first time playing for them, so we didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “She did a lot of scoring for them and was great outside the arc. “During the game we focused on shutting her down and were able to do that and were able to get some offensive points at the other end.”
Skipper Jenna Conroy was the standout with 30 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Having to back it up the next day, the Thoroughbreds ran out of legs against the Breakers. Olcorn said it was disappointing they couldn’t bring the same intensity as the night before. She said they would work on pushing through fatigue during games and training, as well as work through their offences. “We were very flat and fatigued and made poor decisions,” she said. “It was difficult to raise the defensive intensity. “They wanted it more than us and we weren’t able to put the points on the board.” Emily Attard top-scored with 15 points coming off the bench. Olcorn said Attard had a real maturity and you wouldn’t know that she’s only 16 in her rookie season. The mixed results leave the Thoroughbreds sitting sixth with a 4-4 record. Olcorn said they would have liked to have
been sitting in fifth spot at this time of the season. This week they play Blackburn Vikings. “The ladder could have looked different if we got two wins on the weekend,” Olcorn said. “We’ve put ourselves in positions to win games, we need to find a way to play four quarters, that’s the constant battle. “This week is a battle for that fifth spot, ahead of heading into the second half of the season. “We’re in a good position and teams in the top five are saying they are wary of us.” The men’s side had a 74-72 win against Coburg Giants on Saturday night. Maluk Adut and Emmanuel Malou top scored. Tara Murray

Centrals fire for four By Tara Murray Melton Centrals are back on the winners’ list thanks to a four-quarter performance against Sunbury Kangaroos. Having led at half-time in all their games this season, but with a single win to show for it, Centrals focused on playing well all game against the Kangaroos. In tough conditions that led to a low-scoring game, Centrals got over the line 6.10 (46)-5.7 (37). Centrals coach Mathew Sproule said he challenged the team’s leaders during the week – and it paid off. He said the likes of Blake Henderson, James Aquilina, Dylan Weir, Linton Hogan and Jared Scott responded when it mattered. “I kind of put it on the leaders, that we’d played three weeks of good first halves,” he said. “When they [the opposition] kicked on, we hadn’t been able to raise the intensity. “We needed our leaders to step up and the young blokes would follow. We spoke about it again at half-time.” The teams entered the match with identical records and similar form guides – a win each and very much in the running in the other games – making it an interesting match-up. After trailing by five points at half-time, Centrals scored the only two goals of the third quarter, kicking with the wind. Kangaroos veteran Jamie Cuffe gave his side hope when he converted in the last quarter, but Centrals were able to steady and nail the win. Sproule said they were wasteful at times in a game dominated by the defences. He said Samuel Apineru was clearly best on ground playing at full-back, while Lachie Phillips continued to shine. Sproule said the playing group deserved the win after playing some good football across the first five rounds. He said the Centrals could quite easily be at 4-1. “We’re playing some fair football and we’ve been trying to get reward for effort,” he said. “Mostly for the players … it makes them happier and we’ve got to keep improving. “When you’ve been in every game, but not getting the results, it can be deflating.” Centrals have this week off thanks to the interleague break, after which they will face Wallan. Blake Henderson and Dylan Weir have been named in the interleague squad, though Henderson is unlikely to play. Sproule said the Wallan match-up would be another challenge. “We rate them a top three to four side,” he said. “They’ve smashed the poor sides. We give ourselves a good opportunity to compete.

Diggers Rest lost its second straight match in Riddell District Netball League. Facing an undefeated Macedon side, the Burras led by six goals at half-time, before the Cats drew level at the last change. The Cats found another level in the last quarter to win, 44-36. Melton Centrals again shot poorly, losing to Romsey 46-25. Rockbank proved no match for Wallan, losing 55-31.
FFV
Westside Strikers had a day out against Melbourne Lions in FFV state league 5 west. The Strikers scored three times in the first half, before upping the ante in the second half to score another four goals to win 7-0. Jordan Borg, in his first game for the club, scored a hat-trick. The win keeps the Strikers in second spot. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills had a 0-0 draw with Altona North. The Stallions sit third with 12 points after six rounds, without dropping a match.
Hockey
Melton’s men’s side suffered a 3-1 loss to Victorian Sikhs in Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 3. Callun Armitage was the goalscorer for the Mustangs. The club’s pennant G side lost to Hume 5-3, with Tim Armitage, Tony Lawrence and Tom McMurrie scoring for Melton. In the juniors, the under-14s, under-16s and under-10 mixed all had wins.
WRFL
Centrals’ Blake Henderson tries to get the ball out under pressure. (Mark Wilson)
“Sunbury is a similar side to us and they lost to Wallan by a goal.” In other results, Diggers Rest won a thriller with Macedon, 7.7 (49)-5.11 (41). It was a thrilling match all day, with the Burras kicking three goals to one in the final quarter to grab the win.
Stuart Clarke was named best on ground. Rockbank had a tough day against Wallan, with the Magpies winning 30.22 (202)-2.3 (15). Not for the first time this season, the Magpies dominated against a lower-ranked side. The game was all but over at quarter-time, with the Magpies leading 55-1.
Caroline Springs had a strong win against Wyndhamvale in Western Region Football League division 1. The Lakers went goalless in the first quarter, before four second quarter goals gave them the lead. Neither side kicked a goal in the third quarter, before a five goal to nil last quarter, sealed the 9.14 (68)-4.6 (30) win for the Lakers. Jacob Hislop was the best for the Lakers. MOTOR
Sneak peak at next generation By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Ford Australia has provided us with detailed information on the German-made Focus that’s due here at a date yet to be announced, but probably late this year. New Ford Focus will be the first vehicle built on the company’s C2 global platform, making for greater body strength with less weight. Styling gives it a low and sleek look, with a huge front grille and a slick tail obviously aimed at low aero drag. It certainly moves away from the somewhat bland shape of previous Focuses. Body types are sedan, five-door hatchback and station wagon. Ford Australia won’t confirm that all will be coming to Australia. Cars coming Down Under will have a strong emphasis on safety, with Autonomous Emergency Braking with Night-time Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection standard across the range. An impressive safety feature is a rear wide-view camera, offering almost 180 degrees for improved visibility when reversing from parking spaces or driveways. Power for Australian Focus models will be generated by either a 1.5-litre three-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine or a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol EcoBoost unit. Both will sit beside an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission or a six-speed manual in Europe, however we are not sure if the manual will be offered here. We will provide more details on the new Ford Focus as they become available. In the meantime, it’s fascinating to note that the two ‘local’ car marques are keen to promote the German build quality of their vehicles, with Ford Focus and Holden Commodore being made in the country where cars were invented more than 130 years ago.
Styling of the next generation Ford Focus gives it a low, sleek look. (Pictures: Supplied)
