Game plan for Darley By Esther Lauaki
Black is back in Ballan Ballan’s Black Nite Black Lite festival began with a few women toiling away in a broom closet. Now thousands of visitors are expected to flock to this year’s edition of the winter solstice celebration, in which artists, schools and community groups transform 30 shop windows with colourful, fluorescent paint lit up with black UV lights. The week-long free and town-wide celebration, which will run from June 17, will include light shows, food and entertainment along Inglis Street, musical art installations and an interactive show on opening night. Organiser Sarah Peckham said workshops, run by Wombat Regional Arts Network, started last week to help get the town dressed up for the festivities. She said the festival’s genesis came from a workshop that experimented with an old can of glow-in-the-dark paint in a broom closet. “I bought a black lite and we took it into a store room, along with some high-visibility fluro paint that I’d bought, we shut the door and everything just looked spectacular under black light,” she said. “Tennis balls in the store room and our white paper – everything was jumping out at us.” She said organisers expected about 200 visitors last year – and drew more than 1000. Ms Peckham said the festival involved the whole town – from its youngest to its oldest members. “A whole lot of people have put together a lot of unbelievably wonderful things for visitors to enjoy,” she said. “It’s just one of those amazing, magic things.” Details: wombatarts.org/black-nite.html Esther Lauaki

Burgeoning membership at Darley sports clubs has prompted calls for bigger and better facilities. A Darley Park Recreation Reserve user group is lobbying the state and federal governments to fund upgrades to the ageing and inadequate facilities. An online petition by the group has already picked up more than 500 signatures. An AFL Goldfields report in 2016 stated that the park needed upgraded change rooms, umpire change rooms, netball facilities, lighting and courts, as well as a multipurpose pavilion. Darley Football Netball Club president Ray Newton said the club had outgrown its home grounds – expanding from three junior teams three years ago, to 21 this season. “The grounds and the netball courts are in fine condition but we want to ensure that, as our membership grows, we can do that comfortably,” Mr Newton said. “To do that, we need to upgrade facilities. “They’re just outdated for what we want to do in the future. “We need more than what we can do on our own through fundraising.” Mr Newton applauded Moorabool council’s efforts in rolling out upgrade programs around the shire and said the club wanted to collaborate with the council on a plan for Darley Park. He said a business case was being prepared for a proposed hub which would include unisex change rooms, public amenities and a venue that would have meeting rooms and accommodate about 300 people for large-scale events. Lead petitioner Robyn Bewley said she believed that local, state and federal investment was “desperately needed”. “We are a proud community and to support our ever-growing and changing community we need … support to create a facility in Darley that will ensure community members have access to safe and flexible spaces,” Ms Bewley wrote. She said the group wanted to create a facility where people were “welcomed and feel connected” and would remove barriers to participation. “We seek to build a modern community centre in the heart of the Darley community, whilst replacing aged facilities at Darley Park to cater for unisex participation levels that are exploding across all user groups.” View the petition: bit.ly/2smQJGG

Copper thieves strike again By Esther Lauaki Melton and Moorabool commuters endured delays on the Ballarat line last week after electrical cabling was stolen. Commuters on V/Line services were held up by about 50 minutes, and some even longer, last Wednesday as a result of the theft on the track between Melton and Rockbank. Some trains from Melbourne to Ballarat and from Bacchus Marsh to Melbourne were cancelled.
It was the latest in a spate of copper wiring thefts around Melton in the past month which have disrupted scheduling of games at five football ovals. V/Line used social media, emails and text messages to inform commuters of the delays and then later issued a statement. “V/Line crews worked to repair the fault as quickly and as safely as possible and it was rectified just before 9am,” the statement said. “Ballarat line services were delayed by up to 50 minutes, with some services more than

State splashes funds for public safety

Tightening up security measures around open public spaces will be easier across the west thanks to the state government’s latest funding boost. Councils and community groups working on new crime prevention projects can apply for grants of up to $250,000 under the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund. Projects eligible for funding include lighting upgrades, streetscape and other amenity improvements, or the installation of CCTV technology in high risk areas. Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said that the $4 million pool would fund security infrastructure that supported safer communities. “Local communities here in western Victoria are best placed to identify local crime issues and come up with local solutions that will make a real difference,” Ms Pulford said. “Whether it’s lighting, new locks, CCTV or a bigger scale project, I encourage local councils and community groups to think about how this funding could make a difference in their area. “These types of projects can help prevent crime and encourage more people to get the most out of our fantastic public spaces.” Ms Pulford said the latest round of Community Safety Fund grants is also offering grants of up to $10,000 for projects that help prevent crime and strengthen community safety.
The cast of Melton Christian College’s latest production is preparing for an uplifting experience. Year 12 student Emily Summerfield will take the lead role in the school’s August production of Mary Poppins Jr Jr, joined by 24 other cast members. Drama teacher Derek Bendall said rehearsals began in February and fine-tuning has already begun. “It’s all running quite smoothly,” he said. “As always, we want the students to make memories. When you think about your schooling years, you don’t remember your classes – you remember moments. “If anything does go wrong, those are also memories that you can look back on and enjoy with friends. “It’s been quite a lengthy rehearsal period and the students’ commitment to the production has been great. “This is the 13th show for Melton Christian College and when the rights for Mary Poppins Jr came out last year, I couldn’t pass it up. “We’re trying new things with this show. Instead of painting the sets, we’re projecting background scenes on to the back wall … it will be more IT-based effects this year.” Tickets are on sale now for the shows on August 1, 2 and 3. Circus Oz a class act A Caroline Springs school had a different take on education week last week, calling in the circus. Performers from Circus Oz held classes with grade 3 pupils at Springside College as part of a performing arts program that is showing benefits. Last year the school began teaching circus skills to its grade 2 pupils, and when the opportunity to have Circus Oz visit the school this year arose, performing arts teacher Rebecca Ford jumped at the chance. “Education week is normally literacy and numeracy-focused, but this year we decided to focus on the arts,” Ms Ford said. “We didn’t think the Circus Oz guys would come out this way, but when we told them
Drivers nabbed in Rowsley
we had done circus skills last year they were excited. “So we’ve got the kids from last year doing workshops with the real circus guys, and then those kids will be like little mentors for the next group of grade 2s that do the circus unit.” Ms Ford said the benefits of performing and expressing yourself could already be seen. “It’s particularly motivating for the students who might be a bit shy, or a bit unsure about some of the activities,” she said. “It’s really motivating for them in their confidence. The kids in our classes will perform every week for their class and get feedback, so it’s a really reciprocal approach.” Ewen McRae
A 28 year-old Delacombe man was detected by Moorabool Highway Patrol officers driving with an illicit drug in his system at Rowsley on May 20. A 24-year-old Ballarat East woman who came to collect his vehicle was also detected driving with an illicit drug in her system. Both drivers will be summonsed to Ballarat Magistrates Court at a later date and are expected to lose their licences for a minimum of six months. Buddy finds a way home By Tate Papworth A beloved dog stolen from his Taylors Lakes home last week has been reunited with his family. Buddy, a seven-year-old German shepherd cross Siberian husky was taken by thieves who broke into the Kohurau Court property some time between 6am and 4.40pm on May 14. His devastated owner, Jackie Hiett, put out a desperate plea to have him returned. “Having the house burgled and so much taken was bad enough, but when we discovered Buddy was missing – that was the hardest part of it all,” Ms Hiett said.
‘‘
You never know … I always remained hopeful
’’
- Jackie Hiett
Ms Hiett said she wasn’t sure whether she’d ever see her adored pooch again, but was never going to give up hope. “He’s pretty distinctive in terms of his markings, so I always thought that those who took him wouldn’t get very far,” she said. “You never know in these situations, but I always remained hopeful.” Buddy was found walking around St Albans by a good samaritan and taken to a vet, where his micro chip revealed his rightful owner. Ms Hiett said Buddy appeared to be unharmed. “He was very tired and slept a lot when I first got him back, but other than that he seems to be fine,” she said. “Physically, he hasn’t been injured or anything like that. “I was absolutely over the moon when I was told he’d been found.”
Jackie Hiett and her beloved dog Buddy are reunited. (Marco De Luca)
While Buddy has been returned home, other items stolen during the burglary remain missing. Jewellery, including the wedding ring of Ms Hiett’s mother, a television, sound bar and a pair of used sneakers were also taken.
The investigation into the burglary remains ongoing. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au

Wind power on the rise in Moorabool More than 160 wind turbines are on their way for Moorabool as works begin on two wind farms. Construction and landscaping on the Lal Lal Wind Farm’s 60 turbines is expected to begin this week. The farm will be scattered across 2100 hectares at Elaine and Yendon and will generate enough energy to power about 95,000 homes. The site is expected to be operational by late next year. Construction of the 107-turbine Moorabool Wind Farm is also expected to begin in coming weeks. Residents within four kilometres of the turbines will have the opportunity to apply for landscaping if they can see the towers. Lal Lal Wind Farm community engagement manager Tracey Ward said wind power was the future of energy. She said the area had some excellent wind resources that will provide clean, green energy for Victorians. A Lal Lal Wind Farm community drop-in centre is open at the Buninyong Information Centre on Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings. A third wind farm near Ballan, Yaloak South Wind Farm at Mount Wallace, is already operating 14 turbines. Esther Lauaki

Commuters have their say
By Tate Papworth Six councils from the west have joined forces and called on the state government to upgrade “dated rail infrastructure – straight out of the 19th century”. The Brimbank, Melton, Moorabool, Ballarat, Ararat and Pyrenees councils are calling on the state to make a $50 million commitment toward the electrification of the Ballarat line, ahead of the 2018 state election.
‘‘
Electrification of the rail line up to Melton is - Bob Turner urgent
’’
The Ballarat line is only electrified to Sunshine, which limits the number of services running from Melbourne’s CBD through to Melton considerably, according to the Ballarat Rail Action Committee (BRAC). BRAC spokesperson and Melton mayor Bob Turner said electrifying the line to Melton will triple its carrying capacity, allowing up to 1400 people to travel on a single train. “We’re tired of old, out-of-date rail infrastructure literally built in the 19th century,” he said. “It’s unreliable, full, slow and uncomfortable.” “The solution is clear; electrification of the rail line up to Melton is urgent and needs to happen now.” Last week, BRAC released two reports which it said addressed the urgent and long-term needs of commuters between Melbourne’s CBD through to Ararat. The report also included proposed upgrades to two Brimbank stations and the removal of three level crossings in the municipality.
Ballarat mayor Samantha McIntosh and Melton mayor Bob Turner are calling for the electrification of the Ballarat train line. (Supplied)
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice welcomed the report. “The three top infrastructure priorities that the six councils are calling for – electrifying the rail line to Melton, the upgrade of the Ardeer and Deer Park stations, and for the removal of three dangerous and congested level crossings
NEWS
in Brimbank – are all key measures that will improve travel,” she said. “There is an urgent need to fast track the rail grade separations at the congested intersections of Robinsons Road, Deer Park; Station Road, Deer Park; and Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West.”
Moorabool commuters have mixed feelings about electrification of the rail line to Bacchus Marsh, according to initial feedback uncovered during a council poll. Councillors were among the team that conducted a pre-dawn poll last Tuesday and Wednesday at Bacchus Marsh station to gauge the community’s views on proposed improvements to the rail service. Council supports a proposal which, if successful, could see electric trains rolling into the town on the Ballarat V/Line route by the end of 2026. Chief executive Rob Croxford said councillors John Keogh and David Edwards spoke with about 100 commuters, who were encouraged to register their responses online. “I would say, just from that sample poll conducted during peak hour on both the Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, that the majority were overwhelmingly against the electrification of the rail line,” Mr Croxford said. “There were some pretty strong sentiments and opinions expressed about the issue, but there was also a degree of misinformation or a gap in the understanding about the proposal. “These are factors that will go towards informing any reports on community feedback. We will continue to consult into the future as the critical rail line upgrade needs are recognised by government.” Esther Lauaki

Ambos assaulted at station By Esther Lauaki The assault of two paramedics at Caroline Springs train station adds weight to growing calls for mandatory jail sentences for those who attack emergency services workers. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said that a male paramedic was punched five times in the knee, thigh and abdomen during the May 17 incident. His female colleague was kicked in the leg when they attended to a man in his 60s who had collapsed at Caroline Springs train station.
“The man was intoxicated and became abusive and threatened paramedics,” the spokeswoman said. “As he was taken to hospital, he punched the male paramedic. At hospital, he again threatened paramedics, spat at them and kicked the female paramedic. “Both paramedics continued their shift after the incident.” The incident was among the most recent in a spate of attacks on paramedics, driving calls for tighter laws so that people who attack paramedics can not use intoxication or being
under the influence of drugs as an excuse to dodge jail time. Under current laws, offenders are given a mandatory six months jail time for assaulting an emergency service worker, unless they provide “special reasons” why they shouldn’t be jailed. Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said laws needed to “send a strong message to the community about violence against paramedics”. “We have worked hard in the past two years to make significant changes at Ambulance
Victoria to ensure that the safety of our hard-working paramedics is our number one priority,” he said earlier this month. Danny Hill, of Ambulance Employees Australia, said the recent attacks reinforced the need for tougher penalties. “These latest attacks highlight that the message isn’t getting through to some people despite a massive public campaign,” he said. “It reinforces the need for strong laws to protect emergency workers – laws that mean if you bash a paramedic you go to jail, no questions asked.”
Hope lives in Melton A new art installation is aimed at spreading a message of hope in Melton. Sign of Hope, set up at Woodgrove Shopping Centre, was created through a partnership between the centre and local community group Hope Street Youth and Family Services to raise awareness of the services available to vulnerable young people. The installation includes the stories of Melton young people who have been supported by Hope Street’s homelessness and youth services. Hope Street helps young people aged 16 to 25 years old, and in some cases their children, who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness in Melton. Chief executive Donna Bennett said that ongoing support from the Melton community was invaluable. “It has enhanced the assistance we are able to provide to young people in our new programs in Melton” she said.
“Young people and young families of Melton have their own hopes and dreams for the future. “It’s important for agencies like Hope Street and the wider community to collectively encourage young people to achieve the amazing things they are capable of.” The Sign of Hope installation is located outside the Bank of Melbourne and the Jetts Fitness entrance, off Barries Road. Hoops plan on the ball A young basketballer on a mission to pass on her love of the sport needs Melton’s help. Emily Attard started the Specialist Hoops holiday program for children with disabilities at Melton Recreation Reserve last year. She hopes to run the program again this year, incorporating weekly basketball clinics. The 17-year-old said basketball was her passion and she hoped the community would help to expand the program through an online crowdfunding campaign which has already raised $330 towards running costs. Emily has been playing basketball for more than a decade and is also a referee for junior
basketball grades. She said she came up with the idea to organise an “all-abilities” basketball camp last year so youngsters could learn to play in an organised, safe environment. “I joined the reffing community at Melton basketball and I want to give back to the community as I’ve had so much enjoyment from playing this game,” she said. “I hope the children gain basic fundamental skills and, more importantly, fun and laughter through the game of basketball.” Donate: bit.ly/2s6bUMS Esther Lauaki

A new rule book for councils By Ewan McRae Councillors have been put on notice with a bill introduced into state Parliament last week marking the biggest change to local government laws in nearly 20 years. The Local Government Bill 2018 will repeal the Local Government Act 1989 and is aimed at lifting standards of governance and making councillors more accountable to ratepayers. In an Australian-first, the new act will require councils to develop four-year budgets and meet higher standards in strategic planning and financial management. Mayors
will be required to report annually to their communities on council’s progress in delivering these aims. Kororoit MP and Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz introduced the bill, saying it would help improve councils and the community. “We are bringing this act into the 21st century – helping make councils more accountable and focused on the needs of their communities,” she said. “Mayors and councillors who behave badly will be gone for a year – the days of them acting with impunity are over. We want
councils focused on the long-term and these changes will help them do exactly that.” The bill will usher in landmark reforms, such as giving the minister the power to suspend individual councillors who pose a significant threat to the governance of a council for up to a year, clearly defining sexual harassment under the Councillor Code of Conduct and introducing the power to remove councillors for serious sexual harassment. The bill will also introduce measures to ensure service charges levied by councils do not exceed the cost of those services.
Victorian Local Government Association chief executive Kathryn Arndt said the bill was a step in the right direction. “It is vital that councillors serve in the interests of their community and make transparent and accountable decisions,” she said. Melton legal and governance manager Christine Denyer welcomed many of the proposed reforms. All Melton councillors helped draft and agreed to its code of conduct. “Councillors are accountable to each other for adherence with the code,” Ms Denyer said.
Kids look to the future What do you want to be when you grow up? That was the question on the minds of Coburn Primary School pupils last week. New Zealand children’s author Michael Salmon was among a number of visitors to the school for Education Week. He joined members of Victoria Police, the CFA and sports people in providing inspiration to youngsters pondering their futures. Salmon, whose books include Bobo My Superdog and Monster, has been visiting Australian schools for decades. Grade 6 teacher Glenn Heath said the careers day was a hit with the pupils. “Michael Salmon came to visit to share with the children how he comes up with ideas and how he turns those ideas into stories,” Mr Heath said.
“The school has a strong literacy focus, particularly on writing, and the visit was a good way to link our curriculum with a prospective career path. “Our purpose is to give the children ideas so that when they grow up they can be what they want to be as long as they stick with it.” Esther Lauaki

Building on his strength A powerlifting record holder is out to prove he’s not a one trick pony. Karl Di Falco of Taylors Lakes recently represented Australia at the World Powerlifting championships in Belarus, breaking the Australian and Oceania squat records in the 66-kilogram raw open class category by lifting 227 kilograms. Now he’s turning his attention to bodybuilding competition. “In the powerlifting off season I try to train five to six times a week, but as we get closer to competition I actually do less because the body needs more time to recover,” Di Falco said. “With the bodybuilding, I’m maintaining the five to six times a week because I need to preserve as much muscle as possible.”
While the gym is important to maintaining muscle, Di Falco said his diet played an even bigger part. “The most important thing for this is probably nutrition and rehabilitation work,” he said. “I’ve dropped my calorie intake by about 500 calories per day and … include lots of protein.” Di Falco said powerlifting remained his first love, but he felt a sense of duty to try his hand at bodybuilding. “My dad is actually the Australian president for natural bodybuilding, so I kind of feel like it’s my duty to at least do a competition,” he said. Di Falco will compete in the ICN Nationals in Sydney on Sunday, June 3. Tate Papworth

MY PLACE Glenda Meddings has dedicated much of her life to horses and riders in Melton. The long-time local chats with Esther Lauaki about life out of the saddle. We bought our first home here in the 1970s, as it was affordable and we loved the rural area, but still had easy access to the city. Our children had opportunities within the shire for their sports. Basketball, horse riding and athletics were our major activities with the children. How long have you lived in the area? I have lived here for over 43 years and seen the town grow immensely. What are you passionate about? I’m a huge believer in everyone getting a fair go – to be able to speak and be heard. What’s your role in Melton & Districts Pony Club? I am currently the district commissioner for the Melton & District Pony Club, a role I have had for many years. My role is to plan and organise each rally for all our members, with instructors in various horse disciplines attending and making sure the riders are kept safe. Promoting the love of horses, riding skills, personal development and having fun are par for the course. How did you get involved? I was asked to instruct at a pony club rally about 40 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed seeing riders succeed. My own daughter spent 10 years with the club, as well. After many years
of instructing, I continued onto the committee to help and assist in any way that I could. I just love it. What other hats do you wear in the community? I am also a member of the Melton & District Adult Riding Club and Friends of MacPherson Park. I enjoy being active in the development of MacPherson Park equestrian area, involved in maintenance and further projects to improve equine facilities within the shire. What would people be surprised to know about you? What you see is what you get – I am an open book. What is the best thing about living in Melton? Meeting lots of interesting people, seeing Melton grow rapidly over the years, easy access to shops, public transport. If you could change something about the area, what would it be? Firstly, with Melton’s growing population, we need to have a hospital available for the community and surrounding areas. Secondly, I believe an overpass is required in Station Road, Melton South, to go over the railway line. It gets very congested on a daily basis, especially at school times and with the extra traffic coming through from Eynesbury and surrounding new estates.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir tries a beef rendang that’s in a club of its own There are many interesting things for us to try when we return to Spice Klub. On the menu are noodles, rice, desserts and more. But it’s going to be tricky, because I simply can’t see us hitting Spice Klub without ordering the beef rendang. It is brilliant – and I strongly suspect those with a deeper knowledge of, and experience with, Indonesian food will concur. Called here rendang sapi, it costs $13 and is served with plain rice. In modern parlance, this meat would be referred to as “smashed” or even, heaven forbid, “pulled”. But let’s go old-school and refer to it as cooked down. It is meat of high quality; no gristle or globs of fat. It’s quite sweet, has a nice chilli kick and is just sufficiently oily for the recipe to work. Best of all, the flavour is a full-on orchestral blast of blended spices. Gosh. Bennie and I do good with the rest of our meal, too, though unsurprisingly not quite as spectacularly. Lumpia semarang (chicken and prawn spring rolls, $10) are gorgeously lumpy in a way that denotes house-made food. The chunky prawn and chicken mince inside, quite fishy in flavour, is equally rustic. Our rolls are served with nice tamarind sauce with a strong whiff of ginger. Nasi bakar ayam ($13) is “barbecue rice”
SPICE KLUB Address: 4/203 Ballarat Road, Footscray Phone: 0439 159 417 cooked in banana leaf and studded with boneless chicken pieces. It’s served with a crunchy mix of toasted coconut, chilli and salt, along with a sticky soy/chilli concoction. It’s enjoyable, though probably better categorised as an entree than as a main. Despite Spice Klub’s official address being on Ballarat Road, it’s actually on the strip of shops on Gordon Street familiar to all in the inner west as home to … not much. But now there’s a cool Indonesian joint in place, hopefully we’ll be more frequent visitors to the neighbourhood. Bizarrely, given the technicolour multitude of food riches in Melbourne’s west, Spice Klub is – as far as we can ascertain – our only Indonesian restaurant. Consider The Sauce dined at Spice Klub as guests of the management.

On a corner block of about 3555 square metres, this residence references Tudor styling in its facade but inside it’s a blend of decor features in spacious rooms. Entry, beyond a horseshoe driveway around landscaped gardens, is to a foyer where the ornate cornices, as in every room, are first on show. To the right is a carpeted lounge-dining room, the latter defined by columns on entry. Wainscoting, ceiling roses and multi-paned windows with drapes under fabric pelmets deliver a quiet elegance, as
do the olive-green accent wall and freshly painted walls (all through) in warm-white. A wood heater set in exposed bricks is a cosy focal point. This space connects with a rumpus room with exposed brick wall, wainscoting and a multi-paned sliding door to a huge dual-level pergola with wrought-iron fencing. It also is accessible from the meals area neighbouring the kitchen. Dark-stained timber cupboards, a pantry cupboard and good bench space fit out the kitchen, while appliances include an NEC
dishwasher, a 900mm electric cooktop and a wall oven. The next-door step-down laundry (with a third toilet) opens to the pergola, making it a great mudroom as well. The four fitted bedrooms, grouped at one end, include the main with another multi-paned sliding door to the backyard, as well as an en suite decked out in charcoal and white. The large main bathroom is nearby. Ducted heating, air-conditioning, multiple ceiling fans and external blinds contribute to climate control.

It’s in five minutes’ walk of Toolern Vale and District Primary School, Melton is 10 minutes away, Gisborne about 13. Carole Levy 21 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 29, 2018

SPORT Trials ahead, but Strikers delight in setting a hot pace Westside Strikers may be sitting on top of the FFV state league 5 west soccer ladder, but they know there’s a long way to go. In just their first season of senior soccer, the Strikers have made an immediate impact and boast a 7-1-0 record. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said they were happy with their progress. “We are travelling along pretty good,” he said. “We’re happy with the start but there’s still a long way to go. “We’ve played most of the teams, with about another four games until we’ve played everyone.
“We had a good chat last week, that we’ve only just started and we need to step up a gear and keep going.” Also in promotion contention are the third-placed Deakin Ducks, who the Strikers defeated 5-2 on Saturday. The Strikers led 3-2 at the break before notching two more goals in the second half. Hayden Formosa scored twice for the Strikers with Jordan Borg, Joshua D’Alessi and Nicola Orofino also finding the back of the net. The match was a special one, with the two clubs playing for the beyondblue Cup. The
Strikers, who were behind the idea, wore special blue uniforms for the day and donated money raised to beyondblue. Raniolo said all at the club wanted to help a cause that affects so many people in the community. “In one way or another, people have been touched by depression,” he said. “As a community we want to try and raise money to help people in this situation.” Raniolo said they had hoped to raise between $700 and $1000, a target they had hit before the match even started. Melton Phoenix had to settle for a draw in
Darley looks dangerous By Tara Murray Glimpses of the real Darley are starting to show through as the reigning Ballarat Football League premiers start to hit their straps. After an up and down start to the season, the Devils were at their best against Redan. They kicked eight of the first nine goals to gain control of the game and held on all day. Despite letting the foot off the pedal a little late in the game, the Devils won 18.16 (124)-10.7 (67). Devils coach Heath Scotland said it was their best performance this season. “We played some good football,” he said. “We got back to playing our style of football which we haven’t done this year.” Scotland said while Darley had a couple of wins early in the season, injuries and players coming in and out had hurt their style of play. He said the team was slowly getting back to its system but the fast-paced game on Saturday wore them down. Brian Graham continued his good form, kicking seven goals in a best on ground performance. Scotland said he believes Graham is the best player in the competition and that he would be averaging nearly 40 possessions per game. He said while everyone played their role on Saturday, Steven Kennedy was another standout, playing his best game of the season. Scotland said one of the most pleasingly things of the first few rounds was fielding younger players. He said five players had made their debuts this season, including Joel Cadman, Mitch Ward, Andrew Azzopardi and Jack Bewley who played in the Devils’ win against Redan. “It’s been a positive to get games into the kids and it’s good for the future,” Scotland said. “They’ve earned their spots.” He said the younger players were making the more experienced players work for their spots. Jake Edwards, who has been playing VFL in recent years, returned from injury through the reserves at the weekend and kicked seven goals. Scotland said he expected the side to build on the weekend’s win. “As we get blokes back, hopefully we’ll play footy like we did on Saturday,” he said. “It’s a journey of a season and we’re not worried about where we’re sitting. “As long as we are playing consistent footy. “Each week we are improving and hopefully we’ll hit our straps in the back half of the season.” In other results, Bacchus Marsh defeated East Point 18.15 (123)-16.10 (106). Melton returned to the winners’ list with a 16.13 (109)-6.11 (47) win against Ballarat, while Melton South remains winless, after losing to North Ballarat City 16.13 (109)-10.6 (66).

a rough match against Keilor Wolves. Playing under lights, the Phoenix opened the scoring through Carlo Velasquez, who was returning to the side. The Wolves drew level early in the second half, before they had two players red carded and the Phoenix also had a player sent off. The Phoenix players had some late chances, but were unable to score. The Phoenix remains in 10th position. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills lost 4-1 to Western Eagles. Tara Murray

Woodend-Hesket caused the first real upset of the Riddell District Football League season in its defeat of Diggers Rest. The lead changed throughout the game, but the Hawks’ Alistair Rae kicked the last two goals of the game, to give his side the 15.9 (99)-13.10 (88) win. Melton Centrals proved no match for Wallan, losing 19.12 (126)-8.3 (51), while Rockbank lost to Rupertswood, 36.20 (236)-3.5 (23). Sunbury Kangaroos, Riddell and Macedon were the other winners.
EDFL
Hillside returned to the winners’ list in Essendon District Football League division 1. Coming off the back of a couple of tough weeks, the Sharks were pushed all the way by East Keilor. The Sharks kicked the last three goals of the game to seal the 14.10 (94)-13.13 (91) win. Brandon Coletta and Mitchell Church kicked three goals apiece. The Sharks remain a game outside the top four. In division 2, Burnside Heights had the bye.
Hockey
Melton had a day out in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 3 competition. The Mustangs had one of their best days of the season, defeating Old Carey 7-0. The win is just the Mustangs’ second of the season. The side sits seventh. In women’s Vic League 2, the Mustangs lost to Gippsland Bulls 7-0. The Mustangs remain at the bottom of the table. Caroline Springs remains undefeated, after beating PEGS 2-1. Caroline Springs’ men’s side had a 5-0 win against Old Melburnians 5-0 in metro A north west.
AFL Goldfields
Melton Centrals was far too strong for Darley in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition on Sunday. Centrals dominated and kept the Devils to just one point for the game, for a 14.10 (94)-0.1 (1) win. Amy Duggan kicked four goals for Centrals, while Tara McKean was named their best. For the Devils, Brooke Edwards was named the best in the loss. The win cements Centrals spot in the top four, while the Devils are one of two sides without a win. Gisborne ran over the top of Bacchus Marsh for a 7.7 (49)-4.2 (26) win. Emily Crawford was the best for the Cobras. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Melton & Moorabool Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly 37 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 29, 2018

Rockbank works hard to chase a spot in the finals
Ciara Elliot was Rockbank’s best on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
Rockbank didn’t come away with the four points, but the Rams were more than happy with how they played against Rupertswood in the Riddell District Netball League. The Rams have set a goal of playing finals this season and have focused on reducing the gap between them and the top sides. And on Saturday, they pushed Rupertswood all the way. The Sharks got away late to win 41-32. Rams coach Lizzy Masterson said the match showed how far they had come. “We played really well and we really took it to them,” she said. “Both teams were making errors for the pressure of the game, with the players right on each others’ shoulders all day. “Last season we took it up to them but we couldn’t score. “We felt like this match was a win.”
Rebecca Hicks shot 27 goals from 30 attempts, while wing attack Ciara Elliot was named the side’s best. Masterson said things were starting to settle down and she hoped that reflected on the court. She said the starting seven they envisaged in the pre-season had not been able to get on the court because of injuries. Mary Brodie played her first game since round one but lasted only a couple of minutes on court. Defender Jessica Herron also returned but also only lasted a couple of minutes before going off injured. Masterson said with players returning, everyone was jostling for starting positions and they were starting to get the on court connections right, especially in attack. She said the shooting combination was starting to work out.
“Rianne [Vining] has had different shooting partners the last three years. “It’s taken a while to settle. We’ve been working on things at training.” Masterson said they would take confidence from the weekend’s result into the next couple of rounds. “We will learn from that and we want to win the next two games,” she said. “I don’t see any reason why we can’t. We’ve got a good draw this season and we’ll be trying to make finals. “We will be pleased if we can do that.” In other results, Macedon smashed Broadford 69-26, Romsey snuck home against Riddell 48-47, Wallan hung on against Melton Centrals 40-37 and Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list against Woodend-Hesket with a 59-34 victory. Tara Murray
Bears’ reality check By Tara Murray Burnside Heights came out on the wrong side of the top-of-the-table clash in the Essendon District Football League Women’s competition. The Bears and Pascoe Vale entered the match undefeated, clearly the best two sides all year. It was the more experienced Panthers that got over the line, winning 4.8 (32)-3.1 (19) and assuming premiership favoritism. Bears’ coach Brent Thomas said the result was the side’s first reality check, as it had won all its previous matches easily. “We played a good team and only lost by 13 points,” he said. “We went away from our structures. It was a physical game that didn’t go our way.” Thomas said the Panthers talls did the damage, stopping a lot of the Bear forays forward. The Bears weren’t helped by injuries that left them with 16 players for parts of the game. Ebony Stevens was the Bears’ best, despite having to leave the field after taking a heavy knock. Sina Mason, captain Kayla Ravanello and under-18 player Laycee Eustace were the other standouts for the Bears. Thomas said that at times, Ravanello had three defenders lining up on her. The win leaves the Bears second on the ladder with a 5-1 record. Despite being disappointed with the result, Thomas said it was important to remember how far they’d come in their first season. “If you had said to me in June last year this is where we would be at, I would have taken this every day of the week,” he said. “We are so far ahead of where I thought we would be. “Sometimes a loss can teach character and we stuck fat. “We could have lost by 10 goals. I’m very proud of the team.” The Bears’ hopes this season received a setback in the previous round when competition-leading goalkicker Brooke McKinley suffered a season-ending knee injury. Thomas said it would mean a restructure of the forward line. The Bears will this week face the Sunbury Lions, who are third on the ladder with a 5-2 record. Thomas said they expected another physical game. In other results, Hillside lost to Avondale Heights-Taylors Lakes, 6.7 (43)-3.1 (19). The Lakers were the better side all day, recording their second win of the season. Tarryn Healy was the best of the Sharks. Keilor defeated Roxburgh Park 11.18 (84)-1.3 (9), Aberfeldie snuck home against Westmeadows 4.7 (31)-3.7 (25) and Craigieburn defeated Keilor Park 13.11 (89)-2.1 (13). 38 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 29, 2018
Dexter Graham gets a slam dunk against Altona Gators. (Marco De Luca)
Melton’s lucky run is over Melton Thoroughbreds’ run of good form was brought to a halt by Altona Gators on Sunday in Big V men’s division 1. The Thoroughbreds got off to a slow start against the Gators and found themselves down by 11 points at quarter-time. They got back into the game and by the last change had levelled the scores. The Thoroughbreds led by one point with just under four minutes to go, before the Gators scored nine of the last 12 points to win 84-79. Dexter Graham top-scored with 20 points and all five starters and six players scored double figures. The Thoroughbreds’ record now sits at 6-6 and they’re sixth on the ladder. The women’s side had a better weekend, defeating Sherbrooke Suns. The Thoroughbreds won three of the four quarters and were able to overcome a poor second quarter in the 90-81 win. The Thoroughbreds had an even spread of scorers, with five players reaching double figures. Jenna Conroy led the way with 24 points, while Emily Attard scored 18 points off the bench and Molly Young had a double-double. The win brings the Thoroughbreds back into the top four with five wins and five losses. In youth league men’s two, the Thoroughbreds suffered a rare loss against Whittlesea Pacers. The 95-87 result means the Thoroughbreds are a game behind ladder leaders Craigieburn Eagles. Ebony Stevens, Burnside Heights’ best on Sunday, looks to get a handpass away. (Marco De Luca)

MOTOR
New Commodore hits the road By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
MODEL RANGE Liftback
For close on 40 years, the Holden Commodore, together with sibling Calais, were large sedans and station wagons capable of carting a family and its gear over long distances in comfort, while making good time. So now, how does the European-sourced, Australian-revised, replacement compare with the traditional Aussie-built icon? What better way to find out than by taking a family trip from the Gold Coast to Sydney and back? We were blessed with a Commodore RS-V V6 AWD Liftback for our big trip.
LT 2.0-litre turbo $33,690 Calais 2.0-litre turbo $40,990 Calais-V V6 AWD $51,990 RS 2.0-litre turbo $37,290 RS V6 AWD $40,790 RS-V V6 AWD $46,990 VXR V6 AWD $55,990
Driving
Styling
Commodore offers a range of restrained decorative treatments to the sleek, yet substantial, European sports body kit with rear lip spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, it’s much the same with soft-touch surroundings, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel with paddles, alloy pedals, leather-appointed trim, heated sports front seats, ambient lighting and DAB+ digital radio.
Infotainment
Holden, was an early adapter of in-car infotainment with its MyLink system. New Commodore has an eight-inch high-resolution colour touchscreen display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone projection, plus full iPod integration, including Siri, have kept up with trends. However, the satellite navigation system is lagging behind information on the upgrading of the Pacific Highway.
Australian market in two and all-wheel drive with petrol, turbo-petrol or diesel power. Our test Commodore RS-V was powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine mated with a new nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

a warning of another vehicle too close in front, while lane keeping assist gently corrected the steering on any sign of wandering. The 360-degree/surround-view cameras were a bonus when parking in tight spots, as was rear cross-traffic alert on reversing out from between obstacles. Finally, the seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty will outlast many a trip up and down the Australian east coast.
The Australian Commodore and Calais package is down to Holden engineers covering more than 200,000 kilometres of testing the drivetrain and suspension on Australian roads and at the Lang Lang proving ground. Pushing the dash-mounted engine start/stop button unleashes 235 kW and 381 Nm with a note rising to a rorty crescendo. Performance off the mark was all-but instantaneous, while overtaking, even on narrow roads was quick and easy. Official combined urban/highway fuel consumption is 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres on regular 91 RON unleaded, which compares with 10.2 (town) and 7.6 (highway) respectively for the test vehicle. The big boot, 490 litres takes two big suitcases, plus the smaller luggage with room to spare. Comfort for the average height is good but could be challenging for a taller person.
Summing up
The Commodore RS-V shows the way with automotive technology for less than $50,000. European rivals with the same specs would be priced well above. Pity about the sat nav.
