Clubs left in the dark By Ewen McRae Up to 10 local sporting clubs have been hit by a spate of copper wire thefts across Melton and Brimbank. Wire valued at an estimated $130,000 was stolen during seven thefts at a number of sporting grounds across Brimbank between August 2017 and April 2018. Cairnlea Soccer Club is the latest to be hit, with 120 metres of wire stolen overnight on May 23, forcing the cancellation of training for juniors and seniors and the possible relocation of weekend games.

Cairnlea SC secretary Yagiz Adal said the theft went beyond a simple loss of power. “It has a huge impact on us as a club, from the perishable food in the fridges, to lights for training, and our ability to run a canteen on the weekends,” Mr Adal said. “It will probably cost us about $3000, which might as well be $30,000 for a club our size. Even a week without power has a huge impact. “It’s a massive problem when you hear it happening at other clubs nearby. It affects hundreds of people.” About $50,000 of wiring was stolen from Dempster Park in Sunshine North. Wire thefts have also been reported in the Melton area at Arnolds Creek, MacPherson Park, Bridge Road Sports Precinct and Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. Copper wire was also stolen from the train line between Melton and Rockbank, causing long delays and cancellation of V/ Line services on May 23. It is believed each of the thefts occurred overnight and the heavy wire would require specific tools (portable grinders and drills, and a large vehicle) and expertise to move. Detective Senior Sergeant James Sullivan of Brimbank CIU said there were now up to 10 clubs affected by the thefts and police were investigating if the incidents were connected. “It is sad when children turn up on Friday night to play football and there are no lights,” Detective Senior Sergeant Sullivan said.
Nelson’s nimble feet are blitzing their way through the record books. The Bacchus Marsh eight-year-old recently received a haul of awards after he smashed three best performance times for the Victorian under-9s events at the Little Athletics Victoria Region and State Championships in Melbourne. Nelson dominated the 70 metres in just under 10 seconds, 100 metres in 13.64 seconds and the 200 metres in 28.10 at the state championships in March. Mum Jennifer said Nelson started athletics at six years of age because he had energy to burn. “From the age of two he would run everywhere, he never walked,” Ms Banigo said. In his state debut this year he picked up four gold medals and set three new records – a first for his age group at the Bacchus Marsh club. Little Athletics Bacchus Marsh club president Maria Downes said she was very proud of his achievements. She said Nelson’s times might also have bettered the Australian records and are pending verification from the Australian Little Athletics board. Nelson said he hopes to one day follow in the footsteps of his hero Usain Bolt and compete at the Olympics in the 100 metres. He said his goal is to compete again at state level next year and represent his school, Melton Christian College, at the Victorian School Sports Championships. Esther Lauaki

West’s big soccer goal By Charlene Macaulay A multi-million dollar 15,000-seat stadium has been earmarked for Tarneit as part of an ambitious bid to base a new A-League soccer club in Wyndham. Dubbed Wyndham Stadium, the privately-funded sports mecca has been flagged for a Wyndham-council owned parcel of land at 1160 Sayers Road and will include training pitches, sports medicine facilities, a gym, recovery spaces, community sports and residential and commercial development for the surrounding area. The plans include a university offering, believed to be Deakin University, being part of the sports science precinct. The grand plans are the brainchild of Western Melbourne Group Holdings, which is bidding for one of two new team licences as part of a Football Federation Australia expansion of the A-League. Wyndham council has provided in-principle support to the bid by offering the land. Maurice Bisetto from the Western Melbourne Group said the bid had been more than a year in the making. “Thanks to the support from the council, the dreams and the vision are now real,” he said. According to reports, there are 15 bids currently on the table for the two licences, including four from Victoria, four from New South Wales, three from Queensland and one each from Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. The winning bidders are expected to be announced in October. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said that if successful, Wyndham would become a destination for the world game. “It will bring people from across Australia right here to Wyndham to watch on as the nation’s best football players battle it out,” Cr Maynard said. “The value of this landmark deal for our community will be massive, positioning us as a destination of choice, and putting us on the national and international sporting stage.”

Cooking and electrical fires were the cause of most house fires across Victoria, the CFA’s latest statistics into preventable fires show. In 2017, there were 1588 preventable house fires, causing more than $42 million in damage in CFA districts. District 14, which includes Caroline Springs, was one of the worst hit with 264 preventable fires recorded last year at a cost of more than $7.7 million in damage. The damage bill was the second highest in the state, following the district that takes in Dandenong and the Mornington Peninsula, and higher than in regional centres such as Ballarat and Bendigo. Overall, preventable residential fires were up 11.9 per cent in the district, which also takes in Werribee, Wyndham Vale, Whittlesea and Kinglake. Most preventable fires started in the kitchen, followed by bedrooms, garages, roof/ceiling and laundry.

Fifteen people were evacuated from a bus after it caught fire on the freeway last Saturday. The bus was Melbourne-bound on the Western Freeway when smoke filled the interior and flames erupted from the rear about 4.50pm. The bus still had diesel fuel in a tank at the time. The bus came to a halt at the corner of the Western Freeway and Anthonys Cutting, Hopetoun Park, where CFA units managed to bring the fire under control nearly an hour later. All 15 passengers were evacuated safely.

Double dutch, double unders and speed skipping – these kids can do it all. Dozens of students from two schools and two skipping clubs battled it out in the state skipping championships at the weekend (June 3) at Arnolds Creek Primary School. Pupils from Melton’s Xtreme club were up against Ararat West and Yea primary schools teams as well as Melbourne’s Skipz at last weekend’s skip off. The pupils had been honing their skills this year as part of the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program. Teams demonstrated a range of skipping skills across speed, team and freestyle events. Xtreme coach Karen Calleja said the sport was getting more popular across the state.

“The sport has been around for about 25 years and we are continuously trying to build up skipping in Victoria,” Ms Calleja said. Heart Foundation Victoria chief Kellie-Ann Jolly stressed the importance of exercise. “With two in three Australian children aged between five and 11 years not meeting the recommended guidelines for one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise, it’s vital we get the hearts of young Australians pumping to guard against risk factors for heart disease,” Ms Jolly said. “Skipping is a fun, vigorous and social activity that engages children’s minds and bodies in healthy activity.” Esther Lauaki

Ambo staff name danger spots By Alesha Capone and Charlene Macaulay More than 40 locations in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs have been flagged as potentially dangerous for paramedics. Ambulance Victoria last week released a list of more than 230 suburbs and towns across the state which are home to locations where paramedics have encountered patients or individuals who could pose a “threat” to their safety. The list included locations where Ambulance Victoria staff have encountered aggressive
dogs, weapons, “unsafe houses”, verbal threats and assaults, between January 2016 and March 13 this year. Several areas in the north and west featured, including suburbs in the Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Moonee Valley, Hume and Whittlesea municipalities. Sunbury and Yarraville each had three locations included on the list (Shepparton had the most, with five). Broadmeadows, Keilor Downs, Meadow Heights, Sunshine West, Thomastown and Werribee each had two locations on the list.
Albion, Altona, Ascot Vale, Airport West, Braybrook, Brookfield, Delahey, Doreen, Epping, Flemington, Footscray, Kings Park, Laverton, Moonee Ponds, Point Cook, Roxburgh Park, South Kingsville, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Sydenham, Tarneit, Tullamarine, Whittlesea, Williamstown North and Wyndham Vale each had one location on the list. Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said police took any threats against paramedics very seriously. “I think it’s disgusting that paramedics, who are there to help people who are critically
unwell or injured – people who have called a paramedic to come and help them – think it’s OK to assault an ambulance officer,” Inspector Allison said. “No, it’s not OK.” Last week, the state government announced it would toughen minimum prison sentencing laws so attacks resulting in injuries to emergency workers will result in compulsory prison time. “This sends the strongest possible message – if you attack and injure an emergency worker, you will go to jail,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.
Colourful fun on the run Coburn Primary School pupils have put plenty of fun into their latest “fundraiser”. Prep to grade 6 pupils took part in the Colour Craze fun run last week to raise money for books for the school library. Principal Vicki Minton said the youngsters enjoyed exercising amid plumes of pigment. “It was an exceptional afternoon, the weather was perfect and the kids had an absolute blast,” Ms Minton said. “We have a fun run each year to raise money for our school and we asked our community what they thought we should do this year – and they loved the idea of a colour run-style event. “It was a lot of fun for the kids … I don’t think they realised how much exercise they were actually doing because they were so excited to get to the next colour station. “All of our fundraising this year is for books for our library.
“We have 700 children at our school and we need to make sure that we have enough books in our library to go around.” She said the entire school community, including parents and supporters, turned out for the event. Esther Lauaki

Welding whizz sparkles By Esther Lauaki Dylan Gibbs has a burning ambition to be the best at his trade. The 22-year-old Melton South welding apprentice was up against many of the best tradespeople in the country at the WorldSkills National Championships in Sydney last weekend. The championships, part of Skills Show Australia, featured more than 400 competitors
vying for national titles in 50 trade and skill categories. Dylan, who hones his skills and learns his trade at his dad’s engineering business in Brooklyn, placed in the welding category. “Being chosen to compete at Skills Show in the national championships is such an honour,” he said. Dylan earned his place at the event after a strong performance at last year’s WorldSkills Australia regional competitions.
WorldSkills chief executive Brett Judd said nurturing and developing the skills of young Australians could open up incredible and varied career opportunities. “Many of the occupations predicted to have the strongest jobs growth in the next five years are offered by our vocational education and training sector,” Mr Judd said. He congratulated competitors for “excelling in their fields and reaching such a prestigious national level”.
Farms from Parwan to Balliang are a step closer to accessing better water supplies. The Western Water board has approved funding for the planning phase for the Western Irrigation Network, which is aimed at supplying recycled water from the Melton and Bacchus Marsh treatment plants to farmers in the Parwan-Balliang district. Western Water managing director Neil Brennan said the network would “greatly improve” agricultural productivity. “Significant productivity gains are expected by converting existing farms to irrigation farming and by attracting new, higher-value crops to the area,” Mr Brennan said. A network feasibility study found that there was potential for development of a class C recycled water irrigation scheme in the Parwan-Balliang district, a dryland farming area. Class C recycled water is suitable for fodder crops and can be used for human food crops processed before consumption such as oats, wheat, barley, chick peas and canola. Mr Brennan said Western Water would consider cultural and environmental uses for recycled water while planning future stages of the project. Some capital works projects that will support the network are already under way, including an inter-connector pipeline between the Melton and Bacchus Marsh recycled water plants. Esther Lauaki

Hole lotta doughnut love Homer Simpson may be the world’s biggest doughnut fan, but a Taylors Lakes store did its best last week to spread the word on the sweet snack. As part of International Doughnut Day on June 1, Honey Dee Loukoumades in Watergardens gave away free shot glasses of mini doughnuts as part of a pop-up store, putting their own twist on the culinary delight. Owner Bill Moragiannis said doughnuts were always popular. “We’ve done events similar to this before and we’ve served over 300 people in the first hour,” Mr Moragiannis said. “International Doughnut Day is a chance for a bit of fun, so I think it will be a big hit. “We do Greek doughnuts, loukoumades, and this is a first for us doing the shots of doughnuts. Health centre cuts physio service By Esther Lauaki Low income patients will no longer have access to subsidised physiotherapy at Caroline Springs from August. The Caroline Springs Community Health Centre – operated by Djerriwarrh Health Services – at Lake Street will move around the corner to a Caroline Springs Boulevard site in August. Physiotherapy will not be offered through the Djerriwarrh service because of a commercial agreement with a private operator at the site.
Emma Brelsford, of the Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association, said the closest alternative for patients would be to attend IPC Health in Deer Park which has long wait lists for physiotherapy. “The issue is that patients won’t have access to physiotherapy any more at that Djerriwarrh Health,” Ms Brelsford said. “These are people who are on veterans affairs entitlements, pensioners and low income health care card holders.” Ms Brelsford said it would take patients about 25 minutes by car from Caroline Springs
to Melton for appointments – even longer on public transport which is not always reliable. “Patients are then left with a choice of travel to a Djerriwarrh service in Melton, which a lot of them can’t because of their disability and their injuries, or going on a long wait list at another service,” she said. “Djerriwarrh Health Service is a public hospital and healthcare provider … anyone who goes to a private physiotherapist needs to have health insurance or a lot of money to be able to afford to go. “Also, private physios don’t always provide
the same kind of specialised hospital rehabilitation that hospital physios do in cases like when people have had strokes or have been in a severe car accident. “Our main concern is the patients and we’ve been consulting with Djerriwarrh Health and trying to get some communication with patients to find solutions.” Djerriwarrh was contacted for comment. Caroline Springs Community Health Centre will continue to offer a range of services including; paediatrics, podiatry, diabetes education and financial counselling.
Fire tool a game changer A new board game will teach young people and their families about bushfires. The Fire Game will soon be launched at Moorabool schools and aims to educate, promote fire awareness, preparations and what to do in an emergency. The Scotsburn leadership group, including a dozen local volunteers and Moorabool council members, has been putting the finishing touches on the game that asks players, “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” in response to different scenarios. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell congratulated the group on the concept and development of the game and its unique artwork. “The card photographs of the local area, pre and post fire are something that will be remembered by all who play this board game,” Cr Tatchell said. He said educating primary school students
in the district and across the state about fire preparedness will benefit many people, as children will share details of the game with their parents, family and friends. Leadership group member Carol Bond said the game had “local meaning” because it was developed by local people. “It is empowering for young people and their families to develop resilience in preparing for bushfires and emergencies,” Ms Bond said. “As a group, we tapped into each other’s strengths and learnt more about the community.” Esther Lauaki

Machine Gun Charlie undone Just before Christmas Dragan Arnautovic’s elderly mother phoned him to say the “Telstra man” was coming. But she didn’t need her phone line fixed. Underneath her St Albans house, concealed in a clip-lock lunch box, was a cache of heroin and methamphetamine with an estimated street value of up to $500,000. The pair might have suspected police were listening that day, yet detectives from Geelong’s drug unit had been recording calls for the previous three months and that phone call in December, 2016, would prove crucial in bringing down the man dubbed Machine Gun Charlie. Last month, Arnautovic, 55, was found guilty in the Melbourne County Court of the commercial supply of heroin and trafficking of methamphetamine. The trial was told police had been watching Arnautovic for months, even involving undercover police to pose as his buyers in three covert “buys” as they built their case. Arnautovic had earned the title Machine Gun Charlie, for his rat-a-tat style in the boxing and kickboxing rings. He was a national kickboxing champion and the owner of a gym in Melton West and, as police put it, one of the state’s most prolific heroin dealers. He’d been dealing heroin between Melbourne and Geelong since the 1980s. Trusting very few people and preferring to operate alone, he would learn from his mistakes and regroup when caught. As he smartened up his game, he hid his stockpile
in public places, with some buried under football fields, parks and public buildings across Melbourne’s western suburbs. One of his early hiding spots was in a dead-end street in Sunshine, another was a baseball centre in Altona North where police found heroin stashed in Berocca containers and stuffed in gaps in the walls. Between 1999 and 2012, Arnautovic did three stints behind bars. By 2016, he was back on police radar, dealing again. Arnautovic was put under 24-hour surveillance. Unknown to him, he’d been selling to covert cops The pivotal phone call with his mother in December, 2016, came three months into the Victoria Police sting, dubbed Operation Rehangs, led by Senior Constable Daniel Hughes of the Geelong drug squad and his regional team. In a hole under his mother’s place, police found his haul – 502 grams of heroin and 55 grams of ice in ziplock bags in two plastic containers. His mother hasn’t been charged. Arnautovic’s escapades came to an end when police arrested him in the carpark of a Geelong motel, a far cry from the spotlight of the international boxing rings he once graced. The 55-year-old was found guilty by a County Court jury of trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs. He will be sentenced at a later date. – The Age

The art of success The arts talent is shining brightly at Melton Secondary College. Year 12 students Aidan Watts and Harrison Gaulke were finalists in last month’s WestWorld Film Festival in Melton. Gypsi Tyrell, in year 11, was recently selected to complete a year of training in the Melbourne Theatre Company ambassador program and year 9 student Aaron Hibbert was one of only 25 students across the state to receive a Betty Amsden Youth Scholarship for drama. Teacher Rebecca Koroneos said the students were doing great work. “Our students are incredibly talented, passionate and driven young people,”
she said. “Our art programs truly embed our school values as well as teaching key technical skills to support our students.” There is such demand for arts subjects at the college that new dance and 3D visual arts courses will be introduced next year. “We have many students participating in local dance classes and other dance programs with organisations around Melbourne that are eager to continue this education at school,” Ms Koroneos said. “Our students have great drive to pursue this specialised education within their study programs at Melton Secondary College.” Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE Leigh Trevethan is quite a character. The Melton game developer talks to Esther Lauaki about his love for the area. What is your connection to Melton and Moorabool? Over the past 35 years, my family have been part of the Gisborne, Melton and Bacchus Marsh landscape. We initially settled in Gisborne, put all our boys through Bacchus Marsh Grammar … later we all moved and settled in Melton West and Harkness suburbs. Melton is a progressive satellite city that is rapidly modernising to meet the needs of its community. How long have you lived in the area? In the region, 35 years.
You developed the game Gossimo, which turns table tennis into a battle of two cities and a bid to topple a king. How did you come up with the concept? My business partner and his wife teamed with my wife and myself to form a start-up company. He is the inventor type and we both played table tennis together growing up. He told me about a new game idea, showed me a homemade replica. There was nothing like it in the market in a 130 years since table tennis was invented in the 1880s in England. We spent many hours, days and nights developing the characters, the rules and Game Box for the market. Two and a half years later we were ready. What’s the latest development with Gossimo? In parallel to the massive time and effort in marketing in Australia, we are chasing a distribution medium for the world market.
(Marco De Luca)
What are you passionate about? I am passionate about anything and everything I get involved in to make the community I live in a better place.
Beyond that, we have further game versions on the drawing board. You’ve got to be an interesting character to develop a game. What would people be surprised to know about you? I was the Christmas Lantern Man in the region for 19 years (1989-2008). Every Christmas, I would door-knock the community to get their neighbourhoods together as one on Christmas
Eve, providing the glue – a lantern kit – to create a common purpose on the night before Christmas … when everyone came together at 8.45pm to light up the street roadside, it brought magic to the community. Some said it was even better than Christmas Day celebrations. What is the best thing about living in Melton? The majority of people are friendly, down-to-earth people that call a spade a spade.
They say it like it is. I appreciate that. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Build some man-made mountains in the area – not as big as Macedon – to take away the flatness of terrain. If labour and toil built the Great Ocean Road, we can do that. Also, electrification of rail line sped up. We are the fastest-developing corridor in Victoria. ADVERTISEMENT
Banish chills with heaps of hot style Melbourne’s winters demand effective home heating. With so many types of heaters on the market, choosing wisely can be a challenge. Here are two ideas to consider, writes Carole Levy. SCANDINAVIAN MINIMALISM The Nobo Oslo range of panel heaters, in keeping with their Scandinavian styling, are white, neat and simple as can be. Their design means heaters that are practically unnoticeable yet help create a minimalist style that easily co-exists with your other furnishings. Alyssa, Joel and Alishia. (Dennis Manktelow)
Lift-off for young athletes Three young weightlifters are getting ready to shine on the national stage next month – but they need help to get there. Melton’s Alyssa, 11 and Joel, 13, and 16-year-old Alishia from Bacchus Marsh have qualified for the Australian Weightlifting Federation Under-15 and Under-17 Youth Championships in Perth on July 7. Joel’s personal best is 46 kilograms in the clean-and-jerk and 30 kilograms in the snatch events. Alyssa qualified with a personal best of 24 kilograms in the snatch and 37 kilograms in the clean and jerk. Alishia lifted 51 kilograms in the snatch and 60 kilogram in the clean and jerk to earn her spot at the championships. Coach Toni Lane said the trio had been
training with Invictus Fitness in Bacchus Marsh for the past three years. She said that the cost of airfares, accommodation, food and entry fees and uniforms fell on the competitors and their families. “To be able to say that they competed at national level would be amazing, Lane said. Lane, who is a national and world masters weightlifting champion, encouraged more young people to take up the sport. “Weightlifting is such a different sport, she said. “It gives kids of all shapes and sizes something different to focus. To donate: mandtlane5@bigpond.com Esther Lauaki

The best of the west By Ewen McRae Once every four years, the biggest game in the world gets even bigger. The FIFA World Cup attracts more viewers than the Olympics, and will be the cause of many late nights across the country as we watch our Socceroos compete in Russia – the hosts of this year’s finals. In the multicultural west of Melbourne, the game is bigger than ever, with local clubs growing strongly and preparing for a month-long celebration of football. Sunshine George Cross president Jamie Chetcuti said the excitement was building at his club as the countdown was on. “Every four years it’s a very exciting time for the whole country, not just for our club,” Mr Chetcuti said. “It’s the biggest sport in the world, so as soon as the World Cup starts there’s an extra 200,000 kids in Australia who want to play our game. So it keeps the game growing. “Over the four weeks that the finals are on you definitely feel the excitement around, bigger crowds at our senior games. We’ll do some watch parties for our members which will be great fun.” Sunshine George Cross has a rich history when it comes to contributing to the national team, with former Socceroos Kevin Muscat, Craig Foster and John Markovski all spending time at the club. Andrew Nabbout – who is in the Socceroos preliminary 26-man squad for this year’s tournament – spent three years at the club from 2009-11, and Mr Chetcuti said the club was proud to see another of their own in the national set-up. “We’ve always contributed players to the national side, so we’re very proud to see Andrew

getting his chance to hopefully compete on the biggest stage,” he said. “He’s been one of the best A-League players over the course of the season, and now he’s got a contract overseas, so it’s exciting for him and we’ll be cheering him on if he makes the final squad.” St Albans Saints know the thrill of seeing one of their own go on to great things, with former player Ivan Franjic part of the starting XI for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
‘‘
We’re anticipating a resurgence in interest in the game after the World Cup
Franjic played his first senior games at the Saints, before moving up the ranks to the A-League and eventually making his Australian debut in 2012. While Franjic won’t be competing in this year’s tournament, Saints president Marc Maric said the 2014 World Cup was a huge moment for his club. “That got a lot of people really excited,” Mr Maric said. “Everyone kept a keen eye on that one, and then when he came back to the club we had a night where all the juniors could come and get around him, which was fantastic for the club. He’s our current number one ticket holder … not many clubs can say they have a World Cup player in that position, which is pretty cool.” The Saints have a rich history in Australia’s Croatian community, after it was established by Croatian migrants in 1975.

Mr Maric said there would be a keen interest in the fortunes of both Australia and Croatia in Russia. Green Gully SC also has a strong fingerprint on the current squad, with Nabbout and fellow squad member Aziz Behich both playing for
the club in the past. Club president Dennis Venes said the club was always proud to see former players in green and gold, and the World Cup was a chance to join together with the wider community to celebrate the game.
“We’re very proud of the fact we’ve got two former players in the current squad, so the club is a good breeding ground for the A-League and the Socceroos,” Mr Venes said. “We’re anticipating a resurgence in interest in the game after the World Cup, and especially
at our junior trials later in the year, where last year we had over 600 kids trial with us. That will be bigger again we think.” Green Gully plans to show Socceroos games and other big matches on the club’s big screen throughout the tournament.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE SMALL FRENCH CAFE 157A Barkly Street, Footscray
Kenny Weir tries a small French eatery that’s big on flavour For a few years now, Stefan Armentano has been running Small French Bar on Barkly Street in Footscray, bringing a wonderful touch of all sorts of French food and wine to the already wondrously diverse Footscray table. Now he’s spread his wings – but not very far. His new cafe/sandwich shop is directly opposite his restaurant. Fittingly, it’s called Small French Cafe. Fittingly – but somewhat inaccurately. Tiny French Cafe might have been more appropriate. Inside, there’s room for some high stools, a coffee machine and a display cabinet – and that’s about it. Outside are a couple of tables and chairs. But who cares about the scale of enterprise? Let’s feel the quality … which is very fine. I go for the saucisson with salami, cheese, cornichons and butter, while Bennie opts for the canard with duck confit, greens, grain mustard and cornichons. This is simple and tasty eating that is right up there with the many other cheap lunch options in this neighbourhood. Best of all is the bread – oh my! This not your usual crusty baguette. Stefan tells me it’s what called “pain aux cereals”. “It is a whole-grain bread, typically the first alternative choice instead of white bread in France for sandwiches,” he says. It’s wonderful! Wonderful and chewy.

If more is what you’re after, this one delivers. Located in the Kurunjang Ranch estate, this family residence has three bedrooms, a separate study, a huge L-shaped lounge room plus a separate family room. The separate bungalow looks more like a country pub than an entertaining zone. It has timber panelling, downlights, a fully plumbed timber bar and there’s room for bar tables and stools as well as a medium-sized pool table. There’s also an impressive granny flat with a ramp. Outside there’s football goals set into the huge backyard, a four-car garage/workshop, a cubby house and large vegie patch. This property has it all, set in a beautifully rural setting and on about 5000 square metres.
Enjoy living in this well-planned family residence. It has four large bedrooms with built-in robes including the main with large walk-in robe and a contemporary en suite. There is a study off the hall, as well as a generous open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area with a separate rumpus ensuring loads of room for everyone. In the kitchen there is a spacious walk-in pantry, loads of bench and cupboard space and the whole area gets great light. The double garage has internal access. The front and backyards are landscaped and well-maintained. Out the back there is a great alfresco area leading to a huge pergola. Set on about 600 square metres and with extras such as ducted heating, evaporated cooling and solar panels, this house is well worth a look.

Here is a great house for an investor or young family thanks to its fantastic layout, family-frendly spaces and large backyard. The original floorboards have been restored which has modernised the spaces. Split-systems, fans, the neat-and-tidy kitchen in great condition, as well as two living areas, prove it is a great opportunity whether you want it as an investment property or first home. There are four bedrooms, three with built-in robes and the main bedroom with a walk-in robe and en suite. Off from the lounge room, the deep back patio looks over tended-to gardens. Modernise at your leisure or live-in as is. As well as great living zones there is a four-car carport. It’s a quick drive to Woodgrove Shopping Centre and close to public transport and schools.
All three bedrooms in this great townhouse are carpeted and have built-in robes. There is a comfortable lounge room, also carpeted, and a contemporary kitchen with drawer storage and cabinetry in neutral tones, stainless-steel appliances and cream tiles underfoot. The bedrooms and main bathroom are upstairs. This lovely residence has ducted heating and split-systems. The two car garage is a great extra. The property is rented for $300 a week making it an ideal investment option, but equally, a perfect first home.

The clean architectural lines on show kerbside at this large family residence reflect the streamlined looks inside, where all is well put together in an excellent floor plan. Presented to a high standard, the house has a palette of pearl-greys all through – walls, floor tiles, carpet and wood-grain laminate cabinetry – and outdoor spaces are as neat as a pin. The first of two big main bedrooms is off the double-height entry hall, this one with walk-through robes and a spacious en suite

with dual basins on Caesarstone, plus an enclosed toilet. It could easily serve as a home office, although, behind an opaque glass door, there’s a study upstairs with front balcony access. Also upstairs are the other three fitted bedrooms, the large second main with walk-in robe and an en suite mirroring the other’s look. A two-way main bathroom and a floorboarded living room are up here, too. Back downstairs, the entry hall heads past a powder room and the laundry with storage.
The expansive living hub adjoins a separate soundproof theatre room which has grey walls creating intimate moodiness in keeping with movie watching. The kitchen, with walk-in pantry, has Caesarstone benches – including a breakfast bar for four – grey splashback tiles and Blanco dishwasher and 900mm cooker. Bifolds under a pelmet swing back from the living hub to a great pergola which wraps around to the side. It has a timber and stainless-steel bar.

A heated pool, with self-clean system, is rimmed by narrow concrete and verdant lawn, while shrubs run along the fences. Built in 2011 by Porter Davis, the house, on about 605 square metres, also has ducted heating and cooling, two split-systems and multiple ceiling fans. Wedge Park and St Catherine of Sienna primary schools and Catholic Regional College are within four-minute car trips, Woodgrove shopping centre nearly as close. Rams run out big winners By Tara Murray Rockbank pulled off one of its greatest ever wins, knocking off Diggers Rest in the Riddell District Netball League. Gaining confidence after their second win for the year, the Rams were confident they could match it with the Burras and showed exactly that. After trailing by a goal at quarter-time, the Rams turned the tables to lead by five goals at half-time. The margin blew out to 11 at the final break, before the Burras responded but they weren’t able to get close enough, with the Rams winning 39-31. The Rams’ Rebecca Hicks was clearly the best shooter on court, shooting 31 goals from 37, with every other shooter on court shooting below 65 per cent. Goal attack Shelby Strong was named the Burras best. The win means the Rams have already won more games than they did last season. They sit percentage outside the top six, but have played one less game than the sixth-placed Burras. For the Burras, it’s their third loss in four games after starting the season strong. Melton Centrals’ tough season has continued after they were smashed by Riddell. The Bombers led at every break and were able to extend the lead in every quarter, winning 55-32. Taylor-Jane Pereira was the Centrals best. The win leaves Centrals, who are normally cemented in the top six, sitting ninth with just one win. In other results, Macedon was too good for Romsey winning 38-32, Woodend-Hesket got its second win of the season defeating Broadford 40-32, while Rupertswood and Wallan had a 34 all draw.

Sebastopol sneaks home Darley suffered a shock loss to Sebastopol in the Ballarat Football League. After looking like they had got back to their best last week, the Devils were disappointing against the Burras. The Devils led at the first break, before the Burras hit the front in the second quarter when the Devils were held goalless. The Burras still led by six points at the last break and kicked two goals in the final quarter to win, 8.12 (60)-7.4 (46). Jake Edwards kicked three goals in the loss. Bacchus Marsh and Melton had no issues in their respective matches. The Cobras easily accounted for Ballarat, winning 27.10 (172)-9.12 (66). Ben Speight, Aaron Willitts and Jake Owen kicked three apiece for the Cobras. The Cobras’ win and a loss by Sunbury means the Cobras are now top of the ladder. Melton made it two in a row with a 16.17 (113)-5.10 (40) win against Redan. Braedan Kight kicked four goals for the Bloods and Riley Walker was named the side’s best. The Cobras and Bloods face each other this week. Melton South’s tough season continued following a loss to Lake Wendouree, 17.13 (115)-13.12 (90). Brendan Fevola kicked four in his first game of the season for the Panthers. The Panthers will look for their first win against the Devils this week.

39 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 5, 2018
SPORT Spring Hills rest up before second half campaign Spring Hills will use this weekend’s break to recharge ahead of the second half of the FFV state league 4 west season. The Stallions enter the Queen’s Birthday break sitting fifth with a 4-3-2 record and have been competitive in every game. Stallions team manager Joe Febbraio said overall, the season was going reasonably well. “The bye has come at a good time to assess where we are half-way through the season,” he said. “We’ve got some new players who have come into the club and are starting to gel. “It is a tough competition, having moved up a league. “We are under no illusions, every game is a challenge for us, but we are going into every game knowing our best can match it with everyone else.” On Saturday they defeated second-placed Truganina Hornets 2-0. Pasquale Carbone and Dylan Magro scored the goals.
The past two weeks have given the Stallions an indication of where they sit as they have played the top two teams. The previous round they lost 4-1 to ladder-leaders Western Eagles. Febbraio said the result didn’t reflect the match as the Eagles hit the scoreboard late to break away. The break will give the Stallions’ playing group a rest and several injured players are set to return in the coming weeks. Febbraio said skipper Josip Loncaric and goalkeeper Edin Sahnic were leading the way this season and their defence was the key to the team’s success. “The game against Western Eagles was the first time we had conceded more than two goals,” he said. “We were missing a couple of defenders. “At that stage we had the tightest defence in the competition.”
Febbraio said one aim for the second half of the season was to increase their scoring. Like last season, they have struggled to get the ball in the net early on. Last season they turned it around and finished second in state league 5 west and earned promotion. “The team as a whole is working very hard and we’re quite happy with the approach and style,” Febbraio said. “We’re implementing things we’ve been working on for a number of months. “Whilst we’re happy overall, we know we’re not scoring enough. “We’re creating chances, but we don’t put enough away.” In state league 5 west, ladder-leaders Westside Strikers had a 2-0 win against Maidstone United. Melton Phoenix had a tough day, losing to Deakin Ducks 5-0. Tara Murray
Centrals star goes wild By Tara Murray There were early signs it was going to be Dylan Weir’s day in Melton Centrals’ clash with Lancefield. The forward kicked five goals in the opening minutes of the Riddell District Football League clash and by the end of the first quarter had seven. The goals continued throughout the day, with the big man kicking 19 in Centrals’ 29.17 (191)-3.8 (26) win. Weir, who was suffering a cold on game day, said he didn’t expect to have a day out like he did. “After those first five kicks I thought I was nearly done,” he said. “I had fluid on my lungs and I was already puffing and could hardly stand. We were fairly confident that we would have an OK day – I just wanted to play my role.” Weir has kicked a few bags before, but said he had never experienced a day like it. He kicked so many goals, he had lost track by the end of the game. “Things just held for me and I didn’t know I’d kicked so many,” he said. “I thought I’d kicked 15 or 16, so I was in a bit of shock in the end. “Even now, I’m still getting posts and messages asking me what happened. I’d kicked bags of nine or 10 before, but never this many.” Weir said his teammates looked after him once the match result was clear, looking for him instead of having shots on goal to get his tally up. The 19 goals earned Weir best on ground status and moved him to the top of the league’s goalkicking. Joseph Callus was the only other multiple goalkicker for Centrals, with two goals. Samuel Apineru and Michael Callus were two of the other standouts for Centrals. The win moves them to 3-4 and a game outside the top four. Weir said getting big wins was important, as they only play the bottom sides once. He said he was enjoying his first season at Centrals. “It’s a good club and a good group of people,” he said. In other matches, Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list with a massive win against Rockbank. After a shock loss the previous round, the Burras made certain early on it wasn’t going to happen a second time. The Burras led by 53 points at quarter-time and had extended the margin to 111 points at the main break. After the break, the Burras didn’t let up, eventually winning 30.29 (209)-2.2 (14). Gisborne’s Darren Ward, Riddell’s Mick Allen and Matthew Livingstone, Woodend’s Warren Else, Bacchus Marsh’s James Lidgett and Madushanka Ekanayaka, and Sunbury’s Brad Hunter were also named in the team.

Hillside proved far too strong for Jacana in Essendon District Football League division 1. The Sharks set the win up with an eight-to-two goal first quarter, before winning every quarter to run out victors 22.11 (143)-10.10 (70). Mitchell Church kicked eight for the Sharks. Meanwhile, Burnside Heights suffered a big loss to East Sunbury in division 2. The Thunder kicked away early and the Bears were never able to chase them down and the Thunder won 21.11 (137)-8.10 (58).
Ballarat NL
Bacchus Marsh’s good season has continued following the Cobras defeat of Ballarat in the Ballarat Netball League. After an even first quarter, the Cobras shot away to win 55-47. Cobras’ goal attack Stacey Jeffrey was their best, shooting 27. In other games, Melton South lost to Lake Wendouree, Melton was no match for Redan and Darley suffered a big loss against Sebastopol. Dylan Weir kicked 19 goals on Saturday. (Damian Visentini)

Melton shakes off a slow start By Tara Murray
Rebecca Marshall top scored for Melton on Saturday night. (Shawn Smits)
Melton Thoroughbreds continue to show they are Big V women’s division 2 contenders. The side started slowly in its return to Big V, but has moved into the top four with three straight wins. On Saturday night, third-placed Melbourne University Black Angels became the Thoroughbreds’ latest victim. Thoroughbreds playing coach Lauren Olcorn said they were confident, despite losing to the Angels earlier in the year. “We knew it would be a tough game, but one we could win,” she said. “Last time we went down by nine points, but we knew we had a lot more to give and this game we were going to do it. “We had to be patient and disciplined on the offensive end.” Facing a very experienced side, the young Thoroughbreds held their nerve for a 65-59 victory. A 17-11 second quarter was the difference, with no more than two points separating the sides in the other quarters. Olcorn said the biggest thing for the side in the past few weeks had been a more even spread. In the previous game, the Thoroughbreds had five players in double figures, on Saturday night they had four. Rebecca Marshall top scored against the Angels with 19 points. As well, the Thoroughbreds’ assist total has increased. Melton’s victory and Wallan Panthers’ win
over Craigieburn Eagles show the season is wide open. Olcorn knows her players are on the right track and the hard work they’ve been putting in is paying off. “I’m very happy with how we’ve been performing,” she said. “We’re seeing the rewards on the court and the team has stepped up in general. “I knew it would take some hard work to find our niche and it’s come a lot quicker than I thought.” The Thoroughbreds, fourth with six wins and five losses, have the weekend off along with the rest of the competition due to the Queen’s Birthday. Olcorn said the break was something of a double-edged sword, as they would have liked to have continued the momentum. The men’s side had a mixed weekend, splitting its two matches. On Saturday night, the Thoroughbreds lost to Pakenham Warriors in a thriller. The game went down to the dying minutes with the Warriors winning 81-78. Dexter Graham top scored with 21 points as five players hit double figures. On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds bounced back with a 92-61 win against Maccabi Warriors. Star Emmanuel Malou shot 38 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. The Thoroughbreds are sixth on the ladder, with a 50/50 win-loss record. The youth league men’s division 2 side has slipped to third after losing to the Warriors, 92-87.
