Melton council has put Eynesbury landowners on notice for unlawfully harbouring cats. Cats are banned in the estate to protect native wildlife under a Section 173 agreement between the council and its more than 2000 landowners. A warning letter from Melton council planning services manager Bob Baggio was sent to residents recently threatening “appropriate action” against landowners who were keeping cats. The letter said council investigations were under way to identify “offending landowners” and encouraged residents to report their feline-friendly neighbours. Landowners expressed mixed opinions last week on an Eynesbury residents’ Facebook page in response to the letter. A handful of cat-loving residents said they felt discriminated against, while the majority believed that landowners should abide by the rules. “The thing is, you can have the best intentions of having an inside cat but if a door is left open too long, out it goes,” a resident posted. “Cats are hunters, their need to be outside is greater than the comfort of staying inside. “If you don’t like it … don’t live in Eynesbury.” Eynesbury Environment Group secretary Jason Ryan, who is also a committee member of the township’s owners corporation, told Star Weekly that the cat problem was “getting out of control”. “The cat ban has been in place since Eynesbury was established,” Mr Ryan said. “There are owners in here that are flaunting the rules. “It clearly states in the documents that you receive when you buy into Eynesbury that cats are banned … ignorance is no excuse. “A lot of people have done the right thing and rehomed their cats prior to moving into the township.” He said the council has given cat owners an amnesty until July 1 to rehome their pets. “The council is obliged to live up to its obligations in enforcing that cat ban,” Mr Ryan said. He said environmental management was the most important reason for the ban. “We live in the most beautiful part of the area where we are surrounded by native grassland, the gorge and the forest,” he said. “Within that is the swift parrot – which is listed as critically endangered. There are also endangered ducks. We need to protect these species and cats need to go.”

Advocate honoured with Queen’s Birthday nod A deep connection with people is what has driven Christian Zahra’s work over the past two decades. The Trentham local was made a member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday honours for significant service to rural and regional development, to the advancement of Indigenous welfare, and to the Parliament of Australia. Mr Zahra served as Labor MP for the regional seat of McMillan between 1998 and 2004 and worked extensively with a Kimberley Aboriginal development corporation. Among his other roles he chaired the Regional Development Australia Fund Advisory Panel and was on the federal ministerial advisory council for regional Australia.

He credited his upbringing for the direction he took in life. “My parents are both Maltese and I grew up in Traralgon,” Mr Zahra said. “We had very little growing up and we always understood that we would have to work hard to find opportunities in Australia. “Our parents really imbued in us a strong belief that in Australia if you worked hard that you’d be able to find opportunities and make things happen. “That’s been true for me and for my two sisters.” He said he was most proud that he could be an advocate for Indigenous people and those on the “outskirts of society”. “Having grown up in those circumstances has
always driven me to create more opportunities for those people who are at the margins … that has particularly included Indigenous people and those in country Australia who are very often not at the forefront of the considerations of policy makers,” he said. “I’ve always deeply understood what it’s like for those people who are at the margins of society.” Mr Zahra said he was humbled and glad to have been able to make a difference over the past 25 years. “When you do this work, you never seek this recognition, you just do it because it’s what you feel strongly is the right thing to do.” Esther Lauaki

Derek Ramsay has been sole responder for the Rockbank fire brigade for nearly four years. The self-employed draftsman has been turning out to jobs with the aid of Caroline Springs and Melton crews for most of that time – but sometimes, he would go it alone. Numbers at the Rockbank CFA have since picked up enough that the brigade can operate independently from July 1 with a small team. Rockbank CFA, established in 1953, fell on hard times and membership plummeted. “There were a lot of factors that contributed to falling membership, one of those being that the farmers sold their land to developers and moved out of the area,” Mr Ramsay said. The day-to-day running of the brigade was handed over to the neighbouring Caroline Springs crew about three years ago. “Having our brigade managed by Caroline Springs was not the traditional model but it did provide opportunities that we didn’t previously have – particularly where training was concerned,” Mr Ramsay said. “Building our brigade profile in the community was difficult because the brigade was getting smaller and the population larger. It was also challenging to engage with the new residents moving into the estates surrounding the old township. “There were times where I felt embarrassed about our brigade’s ability to respond, but the encouragement from members at Melton and Caroline Springs brigades kept me motivated to stay. I am glad I did.” Mr Ramsay said that his loyalty to the community kept him on board as a volunteer. “I grew up in the area and I knew all the farmers,” he said. “I grew up on a farm in Sydenham then when I got married I moved across the paddock to Rockbank.

Street works frustration By Esther Lauaki Ballan traders say fencing and noisy building work along the town’s main strip as part of streetscape upgrades is deterring customers. Most of the paving works along Inglis Street are complete, with the installation of street furniture and some minor ancillary works still to come. Asphalting has also been completed and roads are now open. Business owner Rebecca Treadwell said the completion of the works couldn’t come soon enough. “The noise is the biggest concern for us,” Ms Treadwell said. “The fences are up and people don’t know that you’re open, or they can’t be bothered finding a carpark so they leave.” Fellow trader Shane Zammit said he believed the upgrades, the first in more than 25 years, were necessary but were taking too long. Moorabool council’s infrastructure general manager Phil Jeffrey said heavy rains stalled night works earlier on in the construction program. “As part of the works, council is installing underground conduits that will future-proof the street for the potential undergrounding of electricity,” Mr Jeffrey said. “Installation works of this nature may slow the progress of the works but will definitely provide a better long-term outcome. “We are making every effort to expedite these works, which will enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the street and deliver a great outcome for the Ballan community. “Council and its contractor will continue to work with traders and the community at large to minimise disruption and accommodate needs as much as possible.”

EPA considers new noise laws Changes to noise regulations may dictate how long and how late residents can use air-conditioners in summer. The Environment Protection Authority wants residents to have their say on changes to residential noise regulations, which come up for consideration every 10 years, on a range of common household items including air-conditioners. EPA executive director Dr Cathy Wilkinson said consultation with enforcing bodies, local councils and Victoria Police have already taken place and now it’s the public’s turn to give feedback before June 18. “You can’t use an air-conditioner after 10pm if it can be heard from next door, but summers can be long and hot, and we are looking at extending that to 11pm,” Dr Wilkinson said. “EPA is also considering allowing air-conditioners to run all night in regions where Victoria’s Chief Health Officer declares a Heat Health Alert, when prolonged hot weather poses a threat to the elderly, young children or Victorians with health issues. “Now we are asking the public to tell us whether we are getting the balance right.” The regulations cover lawnmowers, stereos and power tools, and the times of day when you can use them. Residential regulations do not cover bars, pubs and industrial premises. Information: bit.ly/1FehKiM Esther Lauaki

Caravan park plans opposed By Esther Lauaki Diggers Rest residents are lobbying to stop an application for a caravan park along the Old Calder Highway which they believe is “nonsensical” for the area. A permit application to build a 50-lot caravan park at 1376-1432 Old Calder Highway is out for public notice until June 14. The application was a bone of contention for residents on the Diggers Rest community group Facebook page, with one post attracting more than 100 comments. But the applicant, Dean Slaviero, said his vision was to attract tourism to the town. “My dad’s owned the property for over 30 years,” Mr Slaviero said. “We’re looking to improve the town and provide better services to this growing town. “Diggers Rest is the gateway to the Macedon Ranges and we’ve got a great opportunity here to make that gateway look so much better than it already is. “I want it to be a community asset for the town.” He said his idea for the site would eventually include refurbishing a W-Class tram and converting it into a burger cafe, a community garden and a boardwalk lined with machinery as a tourist attraction. One objector, who asked not to be named, said his concern was that the caravan park would alter the neighbourhood character. “Diggers Rest is a small, tight-knit community that is mostly inhabited by families of local workers or city commuters,” he posted.
“It is not a tourist destination and developing a caravan park is just nonsensical. “It is a thinly veiled attempt to cash in on the strong growth of the residential market. “The economic benefits proposed in the planning report are at best wildly optimistic. “There is no evidence of a shortage of accommodation for visitors to the region.
‘‘
I want it to be a community asset for the - Dean Slaviero town
’’
“For the sake of maintaining the neighborhood character of Diggers Rest, please reject this proposal and find a way to utilise this industrial land for something that will add tangible benefits to the community.” In 2000, more than 100 residents lobbied outside Melton council chambers against an application for a larger scale caravan park on Coimadai Road for fear it would attract unwanted visitors to the area. Many of the residents against Mr Slaviero’s proposal shared the same concerns. “I understand where the peoples’ concerns are coming from,” Mr Slaviero said. “The last application, more than 15 years ago, was right in the centre of town. “But I planned the caravan park as far away from the town as I could on my land. “I’m working with people in Diggers Rest at the moment and I just want to make better use of this land.”

Hockey thirst quenched A hundred sports bottles are helping young hockey players in Caroline Springs stay hydrated this season. Caroline Springs Hockey Club’s junior players are each being given a water bottle thanks to donations that are part of the City West Water Choose Tap program. The program is aimed at promoting healthy living. Club spokesman David Gordon said that the bottles would help to meet the needs of junior members at the club. “With so many juniors now joining the club, were approaching a membership of over 150,” Mr Gordon said.
“Sports bottles will help a lot. What it means is that children can keep hydrated in the appropriate way. “We really value this contribution, and with water stations on site at the Melton council Bridge Road Sports facility, our juniors can make healthy choices.” He said he hoped that the growth in junior hockey would continue. “With quality coaching and a positive culture, we want our members to become life-long fans of the game, the club and health in general,” he said. Caroline Springs police say they discovered a prohibited weapon in a car after a routine check at Brookfield during the early hours of June 2. Police said two people in a vehicle with “altered registration plates” were arrested and the vehicle was confirmed as stolen from New South Wales. A search warrant was subsequently executed at a Melton address resulting in the recovery of allegedly stolen goods. The driver, a 48-year-old Melton man, was remanded in custody.

A pop-up shop in Caroline Springs is encouraging the community to talk about cancer. The Let’s Talk About Cancer pop-up site will be set up at the Caroline Springs Square Shopping Centre for the entire month. The initiative comes following thesuccess of the Sunshine site, which had more than 250 people visit to speak with cancer nurses. The initiative offers people the chance to talk with a Western Health cancer nurse about lifestyle changes that can help to prevent cancers, their family history, screening services available and symptoms and signs to talk to their doctor about. North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network chief executive Christopher Carter
said if the site helps just one person detect or prevent cancer, then it’s worth the effort. “We had a really positive community response to the first pop-up shop, and we’re excited to be able to keep spreading the word throughout the west,” he said. “Talking about cancer doesn’t have to be scary, and a simple conversation can be the spark that changes, or even saves your life. More than one-third of cancers are preventable, and early detection allows for the best treatment for those who do get cancer.” Nurses will attend the shop from 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday. Helping hands wanted for Melton party
Melton mayor Bob Turner and Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins. (Supplied)
Equality plans unveiled By Esther Lauaki Melton council has bolstered its support for gender equality with the launch of its Equality and Respect Strategy. State Minister for Women, Natalie Hutchins last Friday helped to launch the strategy, which outlines the actions that council will take over the next 12 years in its drive for equality. Melton mayor Bob Turner said that the council wanted to share its vision and plans around how equality might be achieved.
He said that a main aim was to make Melton safer and more inclusive. “The strategy provides guidance on how we can make both our community and workplaces gender equitable, safe and inclusive,” Cr Turner said. “It shows that we will work in partnership with residents and key government and community agencies, to not only prevent violence against women, but also promote gender equity.” The launch follows a recently announced $400,000 state funding package for family
violence prevention programs around Victoria. Ms Hutchins said the money would also support community groups in trialling and evaluating new approaches to violence prevention. “Ending family violence means addressing gender inequality in all settings,” she said. “We’re using every means necessary to stop violence before it starts. “These investments will ensure we are better equipped to prevent family violence in Melbourne’s west.”
Volunteers are still being sought for one of Melton’s most popular festivals. Applicants can register to be part of the supersized 2018 Djerriwarrh Festival until June 29. Melton council’s annual event, on November 11, promises a jam-packed day full of family-friendly fun, food and entertainment. This year’s theme is All that Glitters and the council is on the lookout for people in the community wanting to get involved. Melton mayor Bob Turner said that while the event attracted visitors from across the state, it was the involvement from locals that made the day extra special. “While big-name bands grace the main stage, it’s the community members and groups which make the day shine,” Cr Turner said. “The parade down High Street is always a hit. So if you are part of a group that you’re proud of, make sure you sign up to share this with the rest of the city. “Don’t miss out by leaving it too late; sign up to get involved today.” The festival needs people interested in getting involved in the community parade, market stalls or community information zone. Knot to be missed Crafters are being called on to get creative with textiles as part of a new exhibition. Contemporary artist Chaco Kato will host workshops as part of her three-week residency at Melton libraries this month. Kato’s exhibition and workshops will kick off a series of textile programs designed to engage local families and arts and craft enthusiasts in making art with fabric, wool and yarn. Her signature medium is large-scale shelter-like installations made from string. Melton mayor Bob Turner said residents should make their way down to either Caroline Springs library or Melton Library and Learning Hub to take part.
“The libraries will be transformed; what an excellent way to get the community involved in arts and culture around the city,” Cr Turner said. “We’re very lucky to have Chaco Kato come down and share her skills, experience and creativity with us, and I look forward to seeing the finished works.” Free family workshops, adult workshops and DIY sessions will also be available for locals to join in until June 24. Principal leads the way
MP warns on preschool funds ‘limbo’
(Marco De Luca)
By Ewen McRae Caroline Chisholm Catholic College principal Marco DiCesare has been shortlisted for a prominent education award. Mr DiCesare has been shortlisted for the Principal of the Year (Non-Government School) in the Australian Education Awards, with the winner to be named at a ceremony in Sydney in August. The Australian Education Awards are the leading independent awards for the education profession in Australia. Mr DiCesare said the nomination was a nod of approval to the work of everyone at the Braybrook school. “It is an honour to be nominated, but more importantly to lead this vibrant and diverse community,” Mr DiCesare said. “They are at the heart of what we do. This nomination is the culmination of the hard work and dedication we have to learning excellence.” Since Mr DiCesare became principal in 2013, the college has had the biggest and most consistent growth in its history and improved its median study score and Better Education Ranking. In 2016, the college achieved a median study score of 30 for the first time, and in 2017 attained another 30-plus study score. Mr DiCesare said there had been significant changes at the school during his tenure, but he was most proud of the leadership of staff and students. “You can feel it as you walk around, that sense of optimism and that we’re going somewhere,” he said. “We’ve updated the school significantly in recent years to try and give students the best we can. “We have something like 60-plus nationalities, and that brings quite a lot of

“They’re doing what they want, and we’ve improved our results by offering the kids more choice, rather than limiting things. “A broad curriculum is one of our biggest strengths.”
Moorabool toddlers could be among those “left in limbo” if preschools do not receive federal funding next year, according to Ballarat MP Catherine King. Ms King visited Darley Kindergarten last week to promote a national campaign calling on the government to fund preschools. Ms King said the campaign was aimed to end uncertainty for families in Moorabool. “There is literally no funding in the 2018-19 budget for universal access to preschool and no further provisions for preschools,” she said. “This is not good enough for the future of our children. “This lack of support for preschools by the government means families and staff in Moorabool can’t plan for the future.” Ms King said that the campaign, which includes a petition, would call for certainty and commitment to long-term funding for universal access to preschool. “There is no doubt that access to four-year-old preschool gives our children the best headstart to school and for life,” she said. A winning idea with bite A partnership between Coles and SecondBite is giving shoppers the chance to help deliver meals to those in need this winter. Shoppers at Coles stores can purchase a $2 donation card for SecondBite – a national charity which redistributes surplus food donated by Coles to disadvantaged Australians. All funds raised from the initiative will go towards SecondBite’s operating expenses such as fuel, transport and refrigeration. Coles Braybrook store support manager Warren Reynolds said the partnership was a win-win. “It’s a wonderful idea and it’s helping put food on people’s tables, which is the major thing,” he said. “There’s charities out here that provide food
and housing to those in need, but we want to do our bit too by donating our food which could otherwise wind up in landfill. “Instead of going to waste, foods like our fresh produce go to those in need.” Mr Reynolds said there was a number of ways the community could contribute. “Shoppers can purchase a SecondBite card at the checkouts, but they’re also welcome to donate food,” he said. “The other thing they can do is make a donation at the checkout, rather than buy a card. They’re able to donate as much as they like.” The initiative will run until July 29.

Whatever you’re looking forward to, the government has programs to assist Australians to be better prepared. A thriving community where everyone belongs 15 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 12, 2018
NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE Unity is very important to Pastor Penese Faletasi. The Melton resident talks to Esther Lauaki about his love for the community.
I moved to Harkness (Melton West) from Newcastle with my four girls and my wife in 2011. How long have you lived in the area? I’ve been living here for seven years. What are you passionate about? One of my gifts is being a people person. I love getting to know other people and I love getting to understand how they think. What is your role in The Rock Community Church? I’m a pastor at The Rock Community Church in Brookfield. I do play a broader role within the church looking after nine Samoan churches across Melbourne where I visit them on rotation. The Rock is a multicultural church. I understand the church hosts community luncheons. How did this initiative come about? We hold community lunches once a month. We serve the community on a Saturday and everyone is welcome to come and share a meal that has been prepared by our members. The largest number we hosted was 150 people. The purpose of these lunches is to provide a platform for the community to come together and get to know each other. Today people just keep to
themselves and mind their own business. These lunches are not only for Pacific people they are for everyone. We are all the same. What other outreach programs does the church run in the community? We recently ran a diabetic health clinic where we provided information about how to prevent diabetes or how to maintain it. We understand that diabetes is not only an issue within our Pacific community but the wider Melton community as well. What is the best thing about Melton? It’s multicultural. You can find all sorts of people from all walks of life here. There is a great balance. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I think I’d like to provide support for the community and bring it together more. We need to implement some programs to make people feel at home regardless of your background. I’m Samoan myself. When I arrived here, I felt lonely but having those programs to make that transition easier would be great. (Marco De Luca)
What is your connection to Melton?
The Rock Community Church will host its next lunch on June 30 at Botanica Springs Children’s and Community Centre from 1pm to 3pm. Bookings: 0413 345 470

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets a tasty, and well-priced, reminder of how good pizza can be
FOOD REVIEW
TERMINAL 45 WOODFIRE PIZZERIA Address: 41-45 Edgewater Boulevard, Maribyrnong Phone: 9317 0123
The western suburbs are quite well endowed with classy pizza places. One that appears to have flown under the pizza pie radar is Terminal 45 Woodfire Pizzeria, which is down the hill from the Edgewater shops and pretty much right next door to St Burgs. Last time Bennie and I spied this joint, it was a sunny summer Sunday early evening and it was packed and firing. This time – urged on by a successful home delivery and a friend’s hearty recommendation – we are back early in the week. We are the only customers, though deliveries continue apace. It’s a nice space with lots of PIZZA PICCANTE wood, though parking is an issue; best to leave the car at the shops up the hill and enjoy the short walk down. Terminal 45 lists almost a couple of dozen pizzas, with what seems less on the menu by way of pasta and starters than most such places. No matter – we are here for pizza. And they’re excellent. Caprese ($16) is like a salad on a pizza base, and thus an instant hit with my salad-loving son. It’s simple, tasty and rather magnificent – just uncooked mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, basil, olive oil. Piccante ($16) has hot salami, roasted red capsicum, mozzarella and fresh chilli. It, too, hits our pizza spots right nicely. PIZZA CAPRESE And not only do our pizzas please us, we note happily that the prices are a good dollar or two less than we regularly pay elsewhere. Demet Divaroren – Former VU Polytechnic student, teacher and award-winning writer. (Supplied)
Drive your creative life with VU Polytechnic Many parents have concerns about the direction their children’s education is heading in year 10 and beyond, particularly if their interests or talents lie outside university pathways. This is when vocational educational training courses are worth serious consideration, particularly when diverse VET needs in Melbourne’s west are so excellently met by VU Polytechnic, the TAFE division of Victoria University. What if your child is bent on pursuing, say, a creative arts career? The western suburbs have become a renowned hub of creative arts – and opportunities in this field are growing all the time. VU Polytechnic has a proud history of producing award-winning students and sessional teachers who have made their mark in the creative world. Take, for example, Demet Divaroren, who studied a diploma of professional writing and editing at VU Polytechnic and is now a sessional teacher. Her debut novel, Living on Hope Street (Allen and Unwin, 2017), won the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award prize for young adult literature. Other teachers who embody VU Polytechnic’s commitment to having staff that are industryengaged and leaders in their fields have racked up impressive writer awards achievements. Last year, Catherine Crowley won the same award as Demet’s for Words in Deep Blue. She was recently short-listed for the Children’s Book Council Book of the Year: Older Readers as cowriter of Take Three Girls.
Bren MacDibble’s book, In the Dark Spaces, has been short-listed in the same category and has recently won the Aurealis Award, while another of her books, How to Bee, won the NSW Patricia Wrightson Prize for Children’s Literature and is also listed for a UK award. Besides professional writing, study options at VU Polytechnic include design, graphic design, digital media, liberal arts, library and information services, music and visual arts. Creative arts students enjoy peerless facilities and opportunities. They learn and work in newly revamped visual arts facilities including personal studio spaces and printmaking and life drawing studios. VU’s MetroWest gives students the chance to exhibit work in the heart of Footscray. Graphic design students use industry-standard equipment and software in a simulated work environment at Hatch Studio, producing commercial work for actual clients. Music and sound production students learn at Kindred Studios, listed in the top 10 shared workspaces in the world. Kindred Studios have music rehearsal and recording spaces with the latest equipment. VET qualifications can also propel an existing career or degree. For example, if you’re working in marketing, a graphic design qualification will set you apart. In today’s competitive job market you need a diverse skill-set to succeed. Is your teen interested in pursuing a trade or working in hospitality? Read about VU Polytechnic’s offering in Star Weekly two weeks from now…

This is a family winner from the charming facade to well-maintained backyard. It’s a much-loved family residence where personal touches have elevated it into a true home. Four carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes include the main bedroom with an en suite and walk-in robe. There is a fantastic, open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area, as well as a second sitting room and a great rumpus. All the spaces are warm and welcoming. Outside there’s a lawn surrounded by well-tended-to garden beds and a sectioned area to the side which has a large garden shed with a vegie patch and raised beds. On a great-sized block, about 685 square metres, the house also has ducted heating, split-systems a double garage with rear access, and a decked pergola for easy entertaining.
The options here are fantastic – first home, renovation project, investment property. The package includes a great floor plan, a big block and a standout location that is a short walk to schools and transport. With a quality high front fence, this place is also great for those with furry family members, while the double carport and double garage have parking requirements covered. Within, there is hardwood flooring to the hall and lounge area, with a carpeted sitting room with good light beyond. The kitchen, in original condition, has an upright oven and good storage. The three bedrooms have built-in robes, the main bedroom with en suite and walk-in robe. The rumpus room is a strong asset, as is the large backyard. Other features include air-conditioning, new carpet in all bedrooms and a pergola.

There is charm to this cosy and easy-to-live-in property, set on a large block of about 659 square metres in Kurunjang. There are three carpeted bedrooms with timber-framed windows. Two bedrooms have timber built-in robes including the main bedroom which also has custom block-out blinds with matching pelmets, a fan light and a wall-mounted heater. There is a spacious carpeted lounge room which leads on to the meals area and then to the kitchen, which has hand-made curtains on the timber windows. Out the back there’s a brick barbecue and outdoor fireplace, a large paved area for easy alfresco entertaining and a big lawn to the side. The pergola also has a concreted floor. Features include a single carport with roller door and drive through access.
On a great street full of other smart properties, this family residence has large rooms and high ceilings. It’s welcoming inside and out thanks to a great neutral colour scheme and little extras such as a potbelly fireplace in the lounge room and a neat and tidy backyard with zoned hardscaping and easy entertaining spaces (there’s even a great cubby house). The large main bedroom is carpeted, has a walk-in robe and en suite. The other two bedrooms have built-in robes. The huge meals area has floating floors that extend to the good sized lounge room. The kitchen has a 600mm stainless-steel oven and stone benches. CCTV cameras and a separate study, ducted heating and cooling and ceiling fans in every bedroom help make this house feel like a home. The double garage has internal and drive-through access.

Eynesbury is coming into its own and, with its strong sense of community, is proving popular with young families and retirees. A top-class golf course, a general store and cafe, tennis courts and post office agency, as well as a bus service to many schools and yoga, art, dance and bird-watching groups give the quiet hamlet great liveability. Out front, entry is under a grey slate-tiled porch to a hallway laid with bamboo floorboards that continue into the expansive, light-filled living hub at the back. On the way, they pass the extra-big main bedroom; a walk-in closet; a fab storage-rich laundry with double garage access; and, through double doors, a grey-carpeted sitting/theatre room – an ideal quiet space for movies or adult retreat. provide exceptional flow to a grey slate-tiled pergola with a ceiling fan. The buffalo-grass lawn, edged with sealed aggregate, is a thriving wedge of green, and nascent pittosporums will eventually screen off neighbours each side, while snow pear trees line the back wire fence. The cul-de-sac property has double glazing throughout, snazzy ceiling fans in most rooms, ducted heating, evaporative cooling, 12 solar panels, alarm and a timed irrigation system (recycled water). 39 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 12, 2018
SPORT Sharks look to future By Tara Murray Hillside continues to improve in the Essendon District Football League Women’s competition. Fielding a women’s side for the first time, the Sharks have found it tough going against some of the more experienced sides, but continue to make inroads. They have two wins after eight rounds and sit 11th on the ladder. There was a competition-wide bye at the weekend for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Sharks coach Justin Fairservice said he was thrilled with how the side was going. He said heading into the season he was unsure whether they would get any wins on the board, so he was more than happy to have been able to sing the song twice. “It’s not going too bad, we’re playing well,” he said. “We’re learning the game and improving every week. They’ve been some big blow-outs and we expected that the first 12 months. “We’ve been able to keep everyone though. The girls are still upbeat and enjoying it.” Fairservice said the whole playing group was making inroads. He said the likes of Cassandra Turrie, Samantha Stanley and Tarryn Healy had been some of the standouts this season. Injuries haven’t helped the Sharks’ cause, as they finished with 15 players on the field in their most recent match against Westmeadows. Fairservice said they had about 22 players and were still looking for anyone who was interested in playing. He said they were thrilled with the support they had received from the community who were willing to help out where needed. “Without the Sugargum Hotel we probably wouldn’t have a side. They’ve helped pay for the uniforms and have been a massive support in getting the side up and going.” This week the Sharks face Keilor on Sunday afternoon. Fairservice said the focus of the second part of the season was to continue improving. He said they were hopeful a few players would return from injury. “We just want to keep enjoying it and will continue to try new things.” In other matches, Aberfeldie hosts Burnside Heights under lights on Friday night, Strathmore takes on Pascoe Vale, Craigieburn plays Roxburgh Park, Sunbury Lions will look to return to the winners’ list against Keilor Park and Sunbury Kangaroos take on Avondale Heights-Taylors Lakes. Meanwhile, the competition will have an eight team finals series starting on the weekend of July 28. The grand final will be held on the weekend of August 18-19.

Melton South has returned to the winners’ list for the first time since round one in the Ballarat Netball League. Facing Darley, which has just one win for the season, the Panthers controlled the game all day in the 54-38 win, keeping the Devils to single figure goals in each of the first three quarters. The Devils had their best quarter in the last, winning the quarter 12-9. Courtney Annett scored 29 goals from 36 shots for the Panthers and was named their best, while shooting partner Rhys Carter-Coleman Tukapua was also good, with 16 goals. For the Devils, goaler Brianna Rizzato was their best with 14 goals. The Panthers remain in eighth spot, while the Devils are 10th. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh remains in the top six after a strong win against Melton. The Cobras, who have been one of the biggest improvers this year, had no trouble against the winless Bloods. The Cobras led by seven goals at quarter-time and extended the lead in every quarter, winning 61-35. Madeline Hodgson was the standout in goals for the Cobras with 38 goals at 91 per cent accuracy. Paige Gilcrist shot 24 goals for the Bloods. The Cobras remain in fifth spot, only two per cent behind last year’s grand finalists while the Bloods remain bottom, the only team without a win. The other winners were Sunbury Lions, Ballarat and Lake Wendouree. Tara Murray
Depth tested as Rams fight for success Rockbank is battling through its toughest period of the Riddell District Football League season. The Rams, always expected to be one of the sides towards the bottom of the ladder, have faced three of the top sides in their past three matches and will take on sides that played finals last year in their next three matches. Rams’ coach Leigh McInerney admits it has been tough. “We’ve had a hard round of matches playing the likes of Rupertswood and Diggers Rest,” he said. “We have just decided to look towards the future and move players around, getting them more experience for next season.” McInerney said the players have enjoyed being given the chance to play at different positions. He highlighted wingman Braedon Billing, 40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 12, 2018
who spent time at full-back against Diggers Rest, as one player who had shown he could play different positions. Not helping the Rams is having to make multiple changes to the side every week. McInerney said they hadn’t had a stable side since their win against Broadford. “After the Broadford game we had 10 guys out,” he said. “We would get three players back and then lose four players. For our next game we already have got four players out who are going away. “It’s really testing our depth, but we’ve had a few players coming up.” Jamie Austin, who has played the past three games, has been named the Rams best in two of them. McInerney said Austin had worked hard in the pre-season to get his chance in the top side.
Christian Azzopardi and Daniel Wright are two others who have made the most of their opportunities. McInerney said they would give a few younger boys an opportunity in the next few weeks. The Rams had a bye at the weekend due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. McInerney said the break couldn’t have come at a better time and he was hopeful a couple of other players would return to the side for the match against Romsey. In other matches this weekend, Melton Centrals host Macedon, Diggers Rest plays Wallan, Woodend-Hesket takes on Sunbury Kangaroos, Riddell faces Lancefield and Rupertswood takes on Broadford. Bears claw up the ladder with another surprise win Burnside Heights has caused yet another upset this Essendon District Football League division 2 season. Having already knocked off Coburg Districts for the first time, the Bears took an even bigger scalp against Moonee Valley on Saturday. The Magpies entered the game in second spot with just two losses for the season and started the better of the two sides, leading by 20 points at quarter-time. The Bears weren’t daunted and once they hit the front in the second quarter they stayed there, winning 14.11 (95)-11.11 (77). Bears president Justin Peagram said the result was up there with their best-ever wins. “It was a ripper of a game and we played really well,” he said. “The guys went out there with a bit of focus. “The Coburg Districts’ win was certainly a good one as they had belted us around [but] Moonee Valley is one of the teams pushing for a finals’ spot. It’s the first time we’ve beat a team pushing for finals.” The Bears trailed at quarter-time, but
Peagram said the scoreboard could have been a lot closer had they made the most of their opportunities. They opened up their forward line and it proved to be a match-winning move. “Ruckman Anthony Fawcus turned the game around. He roamed around the forward 50 and took marks and kicked a couple of goals,” Peagram said. “Our midfield then got on top.” After kicking the first couple of goals of the second half, the Bears remained in control. The Magpies kicked a couple of goals in junk time, to bring the final margin back. Jordan Hughes, who kicked three goals, controlled the midfield and was the side’s best. Fawcus was brilliant, as was Marcus Giuliano, while Brandon Yankovski performed a different role and Vincent Angelone was good in his return to the side. Josh Covelli kicked five goals, after being held goalless the week before. Peagram said the result continued to build the playing group’s confidence.
With the exception of their loss to East Sunbury in the previous round, they have been playing some good football. “We’ve got 10 or so changes from last season,” Peagram said. “On paper we’ve got a really good side and it’s about getting that belief. We’ve ticked off a few boxes and Aidan [Stott] is a pretty proud coach. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” The win keeps the Bears two games outside the top four ahead of a match with bottom-side Hadfield. The Bears will find themselves in the rare position of going into the game as favourites. They then face Roxburgh Park and Moonee Valley in the following weeks. “It’s a good month of footy to see where we are at,” Peagram said. Cobras leave best til last By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh put Melton to the sword in the second half of their Ballarat Football League clash. For a quarter and half, it looked like the Bloods would take the game up to the Cobras. But the Cobras found another level and kicked the last six goals of the second quarter to open up a decent lead. The second half was all Cobras as they ran away with a 24.5 (149)-6.5 (41) win. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said Melton had come to play early on. “It was a solid four-quarter performance which we haven’t had this year,” he said. “It was a like a finals’ intensity, with Melton turning up to play. “It was an arm-wrestle to about the 15-minute mark of the second quarter. “Not an inch was given in the first 45 minutes. Then the cracks started to appear. “We kicked the last six goals of the quarter.” For Hodgson, the most pleasing aspect of the win was the way his team went about it. Despite sitting on top of the ladder entering the match, the Cobras had won just 11 of 20 quarters. Hodgson said when they were having down periods they gave away too many chances. “We’ve had real lapses in games and even against Ballarat the week before, they kicked five goals against us in a quarter. “It’s [this week] the first time we’ve won all four quarters.” The Cobras’ new-look forward line continued to show it will be dangerous – Jake Owen, Ben Speight and Aaron Willitts kicked 14 goals between them. The trio kicked 15 goals between them in the previous round. Hodgson said they were happy with how the forward line was starting to gel. “You much prefer that than one player kicking 10 goals,” he said. “They’ve only played half a dozen games together and they work really well. “Alec Del Papa kicked three goals, Ryley Stuhldreier, Declan Phyland and Billy Griffiths all seem to hit the scoreboard each week.” Hodgson said Owen was best on ground as a link man between defence and the forward line and also kicking six goals. Scott Sherlock was the best midfielder, Daniel Burton dominated the ruck against three opponents and Del Papa played his best game in a number of years. Hodgson said the team’s plan now was to continue the same form into the next month of football, and then they have played every team once. Mitchell Brockwell was the only multiple goalkicker for the Bloods with two goals.
Jake Owen looks to get a handball away under pressure from Melton’s Brett McIntyre. (Mark Wilson)
Jordyn Cotter, Luke Heaney and Daniel Walker were named the best for the Bloods. While the result didn’t go their way, it was a special day for the Bloods as they wore a red jumper in awareness of cystic fibrosis. It’s a cause close to the club’s heart, as Rebecca Davis, sister of senior player Ryan and
daughter of club president Greg Davis, suffers from the condition. Darley returned to the winners’ list with a good win against Melton South. The Devils kicked away in the second half to win 19.21 (135)-10.9 (69). Shane Page was best for the Devils and Shaun White was the Panthers’ best.
Springers surprise even themselves Caroline Springs couldn’t have asked for much more in its move into Hockey Victoria’s Vic League 2 women’s competition. Having come up from F-grade pennant, the Springers sit on top of the ladder with six wins and a draw. Springers coach Ron Shadbolt said heading into the season they had expected to be in the mix, but sitting on top of the ladder at this stage was a bonus. “We haven’t played at full strength,” he said. “We’ve had injury after injury. Our fitness level is getting us through. “Whoever comes up does the job and they’ve fitted in really well. We’re doing really well, to our surprise.” Despite coming off a premiership last season, Shadbolt said they had to tinker with their game plan coming up to a higher level. He said they had stuck to the plan well. “Most of the team played at this level a couple of years ago, so we knew it would be tough,” he said. “The ladies have returned to play a particular style. There was a few new players last year, who have refined their style this year. “We’re hard to score against. Our goal scoring is down a little bit, but that was expected at this level.” Shadbolt said they expected to play finals this year. “The competition is really close and there’s not much difference between the top three sides. “We play those other teams again and it will tell us where we are at. “We’re excited where we are at this point of the season.” The Springers this week face Gippsland Bulls. The Springers’ second women’s side is also sitting on top in Metro B West. The club’s two men’s sides are also in the top four, which Shadbolt said was a “bit of a surprise.” The club’s junior program is also going from strength to strength. “We had two teams this term and we are expecting to field four teams next term, including an all girls team for the first time.” Tara Murray 41 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 12, 2018
HAPPY BALLGAN, SALES CONSULTANT, FURNITURE Which team do you support? In the English Premier League, I support Manchester United because I have family members who live in Manchester. I’ve now got my family here to support ManU as well. Among international teams, I support Argentina because they’re a strong team and have one of my favourite players, Lionel Messi. How do you think Australia will go in the 2018 World Cup? I reckon Australia could win one or two matches, but only have a 50-50 chance of making it to the finals. I’d love to see the Socceroos up there because as an Aussie I definitely support them. Who is your favourite player and why? Tim Cahill – he has amazing talent and I love his style of play. He’s one of the best I’ve seen. How did you get interested in football? I played at elementary school in the Philippines, either as a back or mid. The passion has just grown from there and it will always be with me. Which team do you think will win this year? Germany or Argentina. Germany is a strong team; they’ve been right up there in the qualifiers and consistently good. They have great players with great skills. Argentina has a sneaky chance.
42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 12, 2018
Underdogs get ready for battle By Ben McKay Three of the world’s top 12-ranked nations – France, Denmark and Peru – stand in the way of the Socceroos in their World Cup group. Whichever way you cut it, the Socceroos will be up against it. A limited squad, tough group and backroom shake-up make Australia outsiders to progress from the group stage in Russia, let alone impact the tournament in the knock-out rounds. But it’s for these reasons the most-capped Socceroo of all time, Mark Schwarzer, believes Australia is a chance to emulate the golden generation of 2006 and reach the last 16. “We’re seen as the underdog, the team less likely, and I don’t mind that,” Schwarzer told AAP. “I’m quietly confident. “We’re in a group that’s doable. I say it’s doable because it’s achievable to get out of the group if things go our way. When teams underestimate us, that’s when we’re at our best.” The Socceroos have at least one high-profile supporter, with legendary Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho picking Australia to get out of Group C in second place. Yet Australia’s squad has it all to prove on the world stage. Just six players have previously travelled to a World Cup, led by Mile Jedinak and Tim Cahill, who remain lion-hearted leaders but with their best football in the rear-view mirror. The Socceroos will be led by next-gen players in Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic and Trent Sainsbury in Russia, all on their World Cup debut. Incoming coach Bert van Marwijk has overseen a shake-up in the side’s attacking stocks. Andrew Nabbout, Jamie Maclaren,
Australia training at a camp in Turkey. (AAP)
Dimi Petratos and wunderkind Daniel Arzani have all come in to support Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice frontman Tomi Juric. The prospect of Arzani running at opposing defenders is exciting, but the Melbourne City teenager is untested at international level. Down back, van Marwijk is betting on Josh Risdon at right-back, a major problem position since the last World Cup. And with a stable central defensive partnership the foundation of so many successful national teams, it’s concerning that
no choice stands out alongside Trent Sainsbury, plainly the Socceroos’ best defender. Midfielder Mark Milligan was deployed there in the 4-0 friendly win over Czech Republic, with Matthew Jurman and Milos Degenek the other options. There is strength in goal and in midfield, where van Marwijk has a number of options. Mat Ryan should start as Australia’s No.1 but in Mitchell Langerak and Brad Jones, the Dutchman can feel confident in his choices. It speak volumes that in the middle of the
park, the debate is about who to squeeze out of the team. Rogic, Mooy, Massimo Luongo and Jedinak will all believe they should be starting against France on June 16, with Jackson Irvine snapping at their heels. Given Australia’s taxing group-stage opponents, van Marwijk is likely to rotate his side in the hope of qualifying. After the world No.7 French come Denmark and Peru – ranked 12th and 11th in the global standings. The Socceroos need to defy two of those sides to continue on past their group. Chief among that challenge will be subduing Christian Eriksen, the Tottenham Hotspur playmaker who runs the show for Denmark. After the opener in Kazan, Australia plays the Danes on June 21 in nearby Samara. If Australia’s hopes are still alive by the final match, they’ll face the high-intensity South Americans on June 26 in Winter Olympics host city Sochi. It’s an arduous challenge – which is why they’ve turned to an experienced hand to steer the side. In the wake of Ange Postecoglou’s remarkable decision to turn down the chance to lead the Socceroos to a World Cup he qualified them for, Dutchman van Marwijk has been handed the reins. FFA hope the 66-year-old’s record in taking his native Holland to the 2010 final will stand up when he returns to the showpiece event. It’s a risk, given the pragmatic coach has little time to implement his plans – many of which stand in opposition to Postecoglou’s style – before the tournament kicks off. - AAP

AT A GLANCE Jeep Compass Limited pricing and specifications:
The legendary Jeep first came into its own when used to mobilise the Allied forces in World War II. Those vehicles may have been spartan and cramped, but they were highly functional, their all-round ability and dogged attitude personifying the Allies’ determination. It is fitting then that as the company negotiates new challenges that it looks to a determined all-rounder to help lead the way. The new Jeep Compass range bears only a passing resemblance to the model it replaces in looks, ability and heart – and that is a good thing. There is a choice of four – front-wheel-drive Sport and Longitude and four-wheel-drive Limited and Trailhawk – starting from $28,850. We took a Jeep Compass Limited home with us for the week.
Styling
Given the surfeit of swoops and angles that seem to be instrumental in the exterior design of SUVs, it is refreshing to come across one that prefers to stick closer to the utility part of the SUV moniker. With its wide stance, hefty wheel arches and squarish shape, the Jeep Compass certainly stands out from the rest of the class. The cabin feels airy and light – something tricky to accomplish in a SUV of this size. There is adequate headroom, even with the optional sunroof, and space in the back to accommodate a couple of taller than average adults.
Infotainment
The Compass Limited features an 8.4-inch
colour touchscreen with sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bluetooth connectivity is a cinch while two USB ports allow you to recharge or access other devices.
Engines / transmissions
There are two engines available across the range – a 2.0-litre diesel that offers up 125kW of power and 350Nm of torque, and the 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol (129kW/229Nm) in our test car. While the petrol engine is more than adequate around town, it needs a fair bit of
telegraphing should you want to overtake at highway speeds.
Safety
With seven airbags, including a knee-bag, stability and traction control, front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera and park assist, the Compass Limited has a fair safety package.

with lifting Jeep’s recent fortunes, then let’s say that its performance both on and off the bitumen has set its mission on course for success. It’s an accomplished drive that takes direction easily, settles quickly over bumps and is highly manoeuvrable despite a wide turning circle. The Compass Limited is thirsty. We found consumption during our week was closer to 11.3 L/100km than the official 9.7 L/100km. Those buyers still wary of Jeep’s recent troubles may find security in a five-year/ 100,000-kilometre warranty, five-year capped-price servicing and lifetime roadside assist.

Jeep Compass Limited is a small SUV with big promise. Its all-round performance and much-improved interior makes for a classy act.

New BMW gives an electric ride By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The good folks at BMW just couldn’t help themselves. Their i3 electric city car is clearly their vision of the future … but BMW has a long history of sporting motoring. So the i3 engineers and stylists couldn’t resist designing a sports version, tagged, without a great deal of imagination, the i3s. We reckon there’s a strong chance that the engineers from the BMW i8 supercar section of the i Division had a finger in the pie as well. And we wonder if the revheads from M Division called in to say g’day from time to time? We’ve just spent an enjoyable week in a BMW i3s and found it even more fun to drive than the standard i3 94ah we had a few months back.

Cute and very different inside and out, BMW i3 is basically a large volume rectangular box that’s been rounded off at the edges and corners to add some style. The result is cabin spaciousness you don’t get in conventional cars of this size. The i3s front spoiler is wider and bolder in its shape than the standard i3. The rear track is widened by 40mm because it has wheelarch surrounds added to cover the extra width of the wheels. The black colour of these surrounds is continued onto the door sills, and the 20-inch alloy wheels are in black. Sporty? Well sort of, but we certainly liked the appearance.

Power and torque from the electric motor have both been increased. There’s plenty of grunt in this little ‘Beemer’. There’s the option of a range extender engine, a small twin-cylinder petrol unit. It never powers the i3s directly but only maintains the

Performance is terrific, with the instant off-the-line reaction we love in all electric cars. There’s near silence from the rear mounted electric motor and the little petrol charging engine is barely audible when it spins away at its fixed speed.
Most of our driving was done in Comfort mode rather than in one of Eco modes. Around town a range of 190 to 225 kilometres was possible in Comfort mode. Which is more than enough for normal suburban daily use. Motorway driving, still in Comfort mode gave an electric-only range of about 170 to 180 kilometres. Enough to get from the Gold Coast to Brisbane and back again. The BMW i3 can be a ‘one-pedal’ car, as you can use the pedal on the right to increase and decrease speed. Indeed everyone we have
spoken to about electric cars says they enjoy the challenge of not having to use the brake pedal. In the i3s we were able to make virtually all trips around town without using the brakes. The battery-only BMW i3s is priced at $69,900, with the range-extender adding $6000. The battery pack is designed to last for the life of the car and is covered by an eight-year or 100,000km battery warranty.
Summing up
The sheer joy of life provided by the instant acceleration of the BMW i3s is its biggest attraction. But we are not sure it really qualifies as a sports model that will have you getting out of bed early on a Sunday morning to head for the hills.
