Colour dance hits Melton The biggest Indian women’s event in Melton will be a kaleidoscope of colour and culture. Teeyan Melton Deeyan, meaning Punjabi girls of Melton City, is expected to attract more than 400 women on July 15 for the annual event. The Rooh Punjab Dee Melbourne dance school, a non-profit organisation where Indian-Australian children learn bhangra and gidha style folk dance, hosts the festivities to showcase its work in the community. Organiser Dupinder Kaur said the event aimed to celebrate the Punjabi culture and promote women’s and children’s services. She said about 500 kids attend the dance school from around the state. “This is the biggest event of Indian ladies in Melton,” Mrs Kaur said. “Last year we had a function at Melton Civic and it was a full house packed with entertainment and food. Women and girls from six to 50 years old participated. “We encourage the children to learn good things like serving the community by participating in their culture.” Esther Lauaki

Melton’s crime plunges By Esther Lauaki Targeted police operations are bearing fruit as Melton’s crime rate tumbles. Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last week revealed a 10.4 per cent fall in offences recorded in Melton for the year to March – to 10,443, down from 11,650. The main drivers behind the tumbling crime rates were significant drops in property and deception offences (7119 to 5889), drug offences (588 to 452) and public order and security offences (586 to 521). Burglary and break and enter offences decreased from 1278 to 1021

“The community has provided police with invaluable assistance in reporting suspicious behaviour such as loiterers outside properties. “Their sets of eyes and ears and the information they’ve passed on has led to significant arrests. “However, there is more work to be done.” Dangerous and negligent acts endangering people climbed from 187 to 221, driving an overall increase in crimes against the person from 1762 to 1903. Inspector Rudkins said that a spike in robbery from 68 to 93 offences was worrying. “We have seen an increase in robberies, recording 25 more offences than in the

(20.1 per cent), theft from 4436 to 3492 (21.3 per cent) and arson from 98 to 76 (22.4 per cent). Melton local area commander Kathy Rudkins said targeted operations to address high-volume crime had led to significant reductions in burglaries and thefts. “Melton police hit the streets of Melbourne’s outer west every day and night in an effort to keep the community safe,” Inspector Rudkins said. “Residents have also played a vital role in reducing this kind of opportunistic crime by ensuring their doors, windows [and] cars are locked and valuables are secure.

previous 12 months, with mobile phones being commonly targeted,” she said. “This is a worrying trend for police which is why we are conducting additional patrols in known hot spots and targeting recidivist offenders.” Sexual offences were also up – to 268 from 218 a year ago while stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour soared from 304 to 337 (up 9.7 per cent) . Moorabool crime was also down by nine per cent, driven by a significant decline in property and deception offences as well as crimes against the person. Information: crimestatistics.vic.gov.au

Man dies in Burnside house fire A man has died in a Burnside house fire on Saturday. The 37-year-old, who lived at the Strickland Crescent house, died at the scene. CFA and MFB firefighters were called to a blaze at a single-storey brick home just before noon. A large amount of smoke was billowing from the house, mainly from the rear. Police Detective Senior Sergeant Justin

Watkins said firefighters discovered the man already deceased in the house. Three other occupants of the house were taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation. It took about half an hour to bring the fire under control. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the cause of the blaze was yet to be determined. Police and CFA are investigating. Meanwhile, a Melton West woman’s plea for help has been answered by the community after

her family’s home was gutted by fire in the early hours of last Wednesday morning. Cursty Shields said her mother’s West Melton Drive house, in which her two siblings and three young nephews also lived, had been destroyed. A crowdfunding campaign to help the family rebuild has raised almost $1000 in four days. “The whole house is gone, they have lost everything,” Ms Shields posted on Facebook.

A 28-year-old man died when his 4WD rolled backward striking him while off-road in Hopetoun Park, bringing a tragic end to the long weekend death toll. The man was one of five people including a cyclist, motorcyclist, pedestrian and two drivers killed during the Queen’s Birthday weekend – three of those deaths occurring within two hours of one another last Monday. Road Policing assistant commissioner Doug Fryer said five families were trying to come to grips with the reality of road trauma. “Our police have had to knock on five doors this weekend and deliver an unimaginable message,” assistant commissioner Fryer said. “I feel for the families, friends and extended community impacted and also our police officers; attending collisions at all times of the day and night.” Motorists had their vehicles scanned, were breath-tested, drug tested and speed-checked as part of Operation Regal which aimed to reduce the number of lives lost and injuries on the roads. In Melton, police detected 19 speeding offences, 15 unregistered vehicles, eight disqualified drivers and six seat belt offences. In Moorabool, there were 81 speeding offences, 10 unregistered vehicles and one vehicle was impounded. On the first day of the operation (June 8), a 49-year-old woman was caught more than double the limit at a booze bus on the Western Highway at Caroline Springs. Her car was impounded.

Ballarat line in sick territory By Esther Lauaki Winter illnesses are being blamed for the cancellation of many train services on the Ballarat line. Ballarat line commuters were forced onto packed peak-hour carriages or buses on June 6 after six trains to and from the city were cancelled because of staff sickness. One of the journeys was replaced by coaches, while remaining commuters were forced to wait for later services or find alternative transport. A V/Line spokesperson said one staff

sickness could mean as many as three services a day could be cancelled. “With the onset of winter, V/Line has recently seen a higher-than-usual number of staff unwell … with a very high number of staff calling in sick today, which has unfortunately led to a number of service changes and cancellations across the network,” the spokesperson said. Ballarat Public Transport Users Association spokesman Ben Lever said that most of the cancelled trains were Melton and Bacchus Marsh services, with those cancellations having a flow-on effect on Ballarat trains. “These staffing issues have been plaguing

’’

V/Line for a long time, but they seem to be getting worse and worse,” Mr Lever said. “It seems that there is such a shortage of qualified staff that V/Line can only cover its staffing requirements when absolutely everything goes right. They’re running so close to the edge that even a small number of staff sicknesses can cause mass cancellation of

trains. This is frankly not good enough – our trains are an essential service, necessary to keep our economy moving, and V/Line needs to manage its staff well enough that we don’t have these kinds of issues.” Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said she would investigate. “It’s very frustrating for passengers on that service and that’s why I’ll be asking Public Transport Victoria for an explanation from V/Line about what exactly is going on with that service,” she said. – with The Courier

Keeping hunger at bay Melton residents are helping the fight against hunger this winter by joining a fundraising campaign for meal deliveries to people in need. SecondBite, a national charity which redistributes surplus fresh food, is one of a group of charities that pitches in to supply food for the Northpoint Centre in Melton South. Customers donate $2 at Coles so SecondBite can provide the equivalent of 10 nutritious meals to disadvantaged Australians. Northpoint manager Stav Gouros said the number of people reaching out for food parcels increases in the colder months. “We want to let people know that we are here for anyone in need that has a Centrelink card,” Ms Gouros said. “People tend to eat a lot more in the winter months and we reach out to a lot more people. “We don’t turn people away if we can see that they are in need.”

Northpoint Centre provides more than 1200 food parcels every week to individuals and families in need across Melbourne and in Melton. FairShare and Foodbank Victoria also provide food and ready-made meals to Northpoint. Coles state manager Mark O’Connor encouraged locals to support the important cause this winter. “We want to do more to support the increasing number of Aussies who are struggling to put food on the table through our partnership with SecondBite,” Mr O’Connor said. Students take art ride Students from Taylors Lakes Secondary College are helping to brighten up the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre. As part of a partnership between the centre and the school, students have been slowly painting a 20 metre long mural depicting bicycle safety and good road use at the centre. Centre president David Bennett said it was always great to see the students contributing to the running and upkeep of the centre. “We have a fantastic partnership with Taylors Lakes Secondary College,” Mr Bennett said. “We have students that help with our programs, and helping around the centre, and this is the latest initiative that we’re doing to help some of their VCAL students.

“The kids really enjoy it down there, so it’s great for both parties.” The mural is being funded by Brimbank council, and the students have been working with a council artist for several weeks to hone their techniques to ensure the finished piece looks its best. “They’ve been practising with the paints and spray cans for a while, and helping in the design process to get something they all like,” Mr Bennett said. “We have the 25th anniversary of the centre coming up, so it will be great to hopefully have this finished in time for that. It looks fantastic and really complements what we already have there.” Ewen McRae

Diggers Rest farewells a legend By Esther Lauaki

Laurie Pincini ran the family-owned Animal Land Children’s Farm for nearly 30 years.

Laurie Pincini was a stalwart of the Diggers Rest community – a father, grandfather, football fan, farmer and bus driver. Mr Pincini died last week surrounded by his family and farewelled in Sunbury on June 15. The local entrepreneur ran the family-owned Animal Land Children’s Farm in Diggers Rest for nearly 30 years and established the Rockleigh Tours bus company in the area in 1993. An avid football fan, he was also a life member of the Diggers Rest Football Club.

His son and namesake Laurie Pincini remembered him as a “much-loved father and grandfather”. “Early this week dad passed with family by his side,” Laurie wrote in a tribute. “He will sadly be missed. “There have been many tears but a lot more laughs and smiles as we remember the fantastic times and life he gave to us.” Another tribute by Diggers Rest Football Netball Club recalled Mr Pincini’s generosity. “Laurie was our club president in 1989 and 1990, a life member and was a founding member of the Burras Club, our original

supporters club,” the post stated. “Laurie would donate his double-decker bus for many mystery bus tours and Christmas break-ups were often held at their farm Animal Land. “Our thoughts are with the Pincini family at this time.” Granddaughter Lauren said that Mr Pincini was “so proud” to be part of the Burras football club. “He refused to come and visit when he couldn’t find his life member badge,” she wrote. “Thank you to everyone for offering your condolences and support.”

Health habits cultivated Children, staff and parents at a Hillside childcare centre are on a health kick. Guardian Childcare and Early Learning Centre is focusing on physical and mental wellbeing, including the launch last week of a herb garden and outdoor area, with an Out and About exercise program also recently introduced. The herb garden was planted by the children, who will also maintain it. Centre manager Bernadette Burns said that the program was born out of the children’s natural curiosity. “The program came about when some of the four-year-old children went for a health check-up and, being inquisitive four-year-olds, they began to wonder about how each person is different in height, shape and weight,” Ms Burns said. “We decided to look at our own health as staff members as well, which

became the driver behind our Out and About program.” Regular pram walks with the children and a sports program have been included in the centre’s weekly curriculum. “In addition to the Out and About program, we’ve incorporated eating healthy food – starting with planting herbs in the garden to be used in lunches and taken home,” Ms Burns said. “It’s about giving children an understanding that they do have control over their bodies and what they consume, so they are capable and confident in making those decisions throughout their lives.” Esther Lauaki One-year-old Declan is excited about the new outdoor area at Guardian Childcare. Winter school holiday fun

The winter school holidays are almost here, and Melton City Council has kids and teens sorted with activities and events to keep them busy. There’s something for everyone, right across the City of Melton, including sporting activities, library activities and much more. Melton and Caroline Springs libraries are hosting free activities including animation workshops, recycled art and craft, mini maestros and a chess tournament. The Teenage Holiday Program is offering up a range of activities from laser tag and indoor rock climbing, to ghost and street art tours. There’s also Get Activated Stay Motivated which will introduce kids aged 1-12 to a range of new sports. Bookings required. Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner I was honoured last week to be joined by the Minister for Women, and Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Natalie Hutchins, to officially launch Equality and Respect 2030, Council’s long-term vision for achieving gender equality in the City of Melton.

Wyndham, come together to develop strategies on how to engage with at-risk young people across our region. It was a fantastic event, with some great outcomes, and I look forward to the next forum where young people will be invited to share their ideas with key decision makers.

The strategy recognises that gender inequality is the root cause of violence against women - and given the City of Melton has the fourth-highest rate of family violence in Victoria - it is a means for Council to share our vision and plans around how gender equality might be achieved.

Finally, please join me in congratulating Ian Lawrey, President of the Melton Sub-branch RSL, and Vice President of the Melton Sub-branch Vietnam Veterans Association, who received an Order of Australia Medal on Queen’s Birthday, for his service to veterans and their families. Ian is a deserving recipient of this great honour, and a true champion of our community.

The strategy outlines how we can make both our community and workplace gender equitable, safe and inclusive, and demonstrates our commitment to working with key government and community agencies, to not only prevent violence against women, but promote gender equity. Last week, I also attended the Western Region Youth Integration Forum that saw Council staff, and youth assistance agency representatives from across the City of Melton, Brimbank and

Cr Goran Kesic Caroline Springs and Burnside continue to be hives of activity, with the expansion of the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre, and construction of Westwood Drive road and bridge, well underway. Works on the leisure centre and new sub-regional tennis facility are progressing well, with the $11.8 million project on track to be completed at the end of 2018. Contractors have completed 70 per cent of the concrete slab for the building, and have installed structural steel to the indoor court area. Framing of the timber walls has started, as has the installation of roofing, and geo-membranes to the tennis courts. Light poles and fittings have also been installed. Over on Westwood Drive, the much anticipated road and bridge construction project is progressing well, and is on track to be completed in early 2019. The road on the northern side of the creek is almost complete, with all layers down and kerb installed. Asphalting also took place last week. Progress on the bridge construction is also coming along nicely. The concrete support structures on the south end of the bridge have been poured, and the northern support structures are due to be poured before the end of June. Footings have been poured, along with the column piers and we’re looking forward to the beams being craned into place in July. Club member fined over theft A former Bacchus Marsh Motocross Club committee member has been found guilty of stealing thousands of dollars of cash payments for her own use. Karina Atanasovski, 35, was the not-for-profit club’s canteen manager from the end of 2014 to November 2015, and also managed the club’s memberships. But the mother-of-three, who was responsible for banking cash received from club meets, is believed to have taken more than $8000 for personal use. Magistrate Ronald Saines found Atanasovski guilty of one charge of theft on Thursday after

a two-day contested hearing at the Ballarat Magistrates Court. He told Atanasovski she breached her position of trust and had shown no remorse. “This is a serious example of theft, punishable by five years’ imprisonment,” Mr Saines said. The court was told the club held a number of events during the year where cash from sources, including gate takings and membership payments, were taken to the canteen. At the end of the day, Atanasovski and the former club president Wade Cunningham would count the cash and the canteen profit.

It was Atanasovski’s role to bank the money, but bank statements showed after March 31, 2015, and up until November 2015, there were only two cash deposits. Mr Saines said he accepted the motocross club’s audit practices were appalling, with a system that relied on honesty. “I am satisfied the accused had large amount of cash in her possession. She was aware of the slack supervision of her management,” he said. “This is highly likely to be $8000 or more. On the evidence it’s clear cash … remains unaccounted for.”

Atanasovski abruptly left the club’s annual general meeting in November 2015 when its finances were raised. A committee member later attended her house to collect the club’s property but some club room keys were absent. Atanasovski’s defence called for a community corrections order or fine as she was struggling with personal issues at the time. She was convicted and fined $8000 and ordered to pay $7687 compensation, $81.10 court costs and $690 witness costs. – Ballarat Courier

Kim’s cooking challenge Kim Tran’s journey on My Kitchen Rules might not have ended the way she wanted it to, but her food journey has just begun. The St Albans-based contestant, who partnered with her friend, Suong Pham, on the show, will open her own restaurant later this month. The restaurant, called Ms Kim, will be located in Nelson Place, Williamstown, and will showcase the traditional Vietnamese food Kim and Suong cooked in the TV series. “I wanted to go on MKR to showcase our Vietnamese traditional cuisine and then come out and open up my own restaurant, continuing on what I cooked on the show,” Kim said. “I’m going for traditional flavouring and traditional taste, but I’m going to moderniseit a bit with plating so it’s also a sensory experience.” Kim said that while she’d always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, it was her time on MKR that gave her the

confidence to take action. “Being on the show and making it to the grand final showed me what I’m capable of and to take that leap to open my own place,” she said. “I wish we’d won because we could have done so much with that prize money, but it’s OK, that’s the decision. I’m going to roll with it.” Ms Kim will serve lunch and dinner, with the hopes of having a breakfast menu by summer. “We don’t want it to be too fancy, but we do want it to be relaxing, welcoming and soothing,” Kim said. With a Saturday, June 30, launch date in mind, Kim is expecting some familiar faces to help celebrate the occasion. Tate Papworth MKR runner-up Kim Tran is working on her Williamstown cafe. How do you feel being awarded a medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to veterans and their families? Surprised! It came as a big surprise. The process takes almost two years which means that I was nominated in 2016 by some very sneaky people who have a lot to answer for. It’s a great honour. Tell me about your service in the Australian Army.

I was a national serviceman in the army from February 1968 and served in Vietnam in February 1969 until December 1969. I was called up to enlist at 19 years old and was deferred for a couple of times because I had an ankle injury from football. I finally went when I was 21. When I left the army I went back to work at Fletcher Jones clothing for 20 years and spent another 20 as sales manager in the automotive industry.

How did you become involved in the Melton Returned and Services League?

www.legrolawyers.com.au I didn’t worry too much about RSL at first. I was busy working, getting married and raising my family. About 10 years ago I became involved in 1, the250 RSL because I wanted to help Level High St, Melton bring the community together. I joined the RSL because ANZAC and Remembrance day are for veterans more than for everyone else. I wanted to improve the way we mark the day and celebrate our veterans in Melton. I took on the challenge and to my delight, it’s grown from nothing to more than 1000 people attending each year. It’s a team effort and the committee is owed as much as I am. Huge support from the local council all the way through.

9747 9679

What are you passionate about? I’m a big supporter of children, the more we can teach them what the armed forces can do for their community, the better for them. It gets people involved with it again. Young people need to have respect for what others have done for their country. It tightens a community and if we can be part of that, it’s a huge help. What hats do you wear in the community? I am the president of the Melton RSL, I was a founding member and I’m the vice president of the Vietnam Veterans Association which

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE There is no chickening out for Kenny Weir at this new set-up The Art Of Fried Chicken has taken over two shopfronts that have long been empty since the days they housed two Asian eateries. They – and the walkway between them that used to lead to the original Laksa King – have been turned into a single premises. TAFC is a food truck operation putting down bricks-and-mortar roots, though I suspect the building as a whole is destined for development somewhere along the way. It’s fitting, then, that this new fried chook joint has something of a makeshift vibe about it – less restaurant and more food-truck-withoutwheels, with rudimentary seating. That’s OK by us. As well, we’re happy to give them some leeway in terms of assessment as we are visiting in the opening hours of their opening day. Such is not ideal for CTS story purposes, of course, but that’s how the timing has worked out – post-Saturday morning kung fu, it’s been an easy and choice option. Plus: We’re hungry. We arrive about 12.20pm and are served quickly. About 10 minutes later, the place is a whole lot more crowded; the word is out. We ignore the opening day $1 wingettes and rib specials. Of the menu listings, we ignore those under the Things With Bread and the Chicken Without Bones headings. Actually, we are bemused anyone would order the latter. Why order breast when you

18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 19, 2018

THE ART OF FRIED CHICKEN 320 Racecourse Road, Flemington can order Chicken With Bones? Which is what we do. What we get: Three pieces of regular Art Of Chicken ($15), three pieces of Asian Hot Nashville Chicken ($16), Mama’s Vietnamese slaw ($5.50) and chips ($5.50). It’s all pretty good. Even the chunkier meat pieces are juicy (or at least not dry), though inevitably it’s the bone-dominated items that are the most tasty. Bennie is disappointed at the mildness of the spice hit in the Nashville poultry, though the spicing appears to be a bit random, as the wing I have gives me a right nice glow. He rates the chips highly. Myself, not so much; they could, IMO, be hotter and less greasy. (Just to re-iterate: This is opening day, so some leeway is in order.) Perhaps best of all is the Viet slaw – it’s excellent. The Art Of Fried Chicken is destined to be a Flemo hit. Will we return? You bet. Centrals hold hope for finals By Tara Murray Melton Centrals haven’t given up hope of a finals berth in the Riddell District Netball League despite sitting second bottom halfway through the season. Centrals have just a win and a draw from their first eight matches and sit only ahead of a win-less Broadford, but at the same time sit just a game and a half outside the top six. Centrals’ coach Randy Pereira said he had not given up hope of playing a part in finals. Centrals have been a mainstay in the top six in recent years. “We play Broadford this week so hopefully we can get the four points and close the gap,” he said. “A lot of the teams are fighting for finals spots and play each other and the top teams. “I’m the supreme optimist and I’m hoping we can hang in there. “I think once we get all our girls back and get the shooters going we can still make finals. “And once it gets to finals you never know what can happen.” On Saturday, Centrals were easily beaten by ladder leaders Macedon. The Cats won every quarter for a 49-25 win. Looking at the teams on paper, Pereira said he thought the margin could have been a lot bigger. “They should have beaten us by 40 goals,” he said. “We turned the ball over heaps. “It was a disappointing day for the club.” Caitlin Duncan was named Centrals’ best, along with Emmalea D’Antonio and Abbey Grant.

Rebecca Morabito was the pick of the shooters, shooting 13 from 20 attempts. Macedon’s two defenders Janelle Birch and Katie Clarke double-teamed Morabito for much of the game making life hard for one of the competition’s best players. Pereira said the attacking end continued to be where the side let itself down and it had cost them a couple of games. “We can get turnovers, but then we are either turning the ball over or missing shots. “We are averaging 29 misses per game. It’s disappointing for the midcourters and defence who are working so hard to get the ball.” Centrals used four different shooters on Saturday looking for the right combination, with Katie Hepburn missing the game. In other results, Romsey had to come from behind against Rockbank. The Redbacks had a slow start and trailed by three goals at half-time The inclusion of Hope Evans at half-time helped the Redbacks and they outscored the Rams 30-11 in the second half to win, 49-33. Rebecca Hicks shot 25 goals for the Rams. Wallan proved too strong for Diggers Rest. The Magpies opened the game up in the second quarter, leading by seven goals at half-time. The Burras were unable to close the gap and lost 40-32. Kathie Dicker shot 27 goals for the Burras, with Stephanie Barnes named their best. Rupertswood tried different combinations on the way to a 64-24 win against Broadford, while Riddell proved too strong for Woodend-Hesket, winning 55-40.

Caitlin Duncan was named Melton Centrals’ best on Saturday. (Damian Visentini)

SPORT Melton Phoenix’s hard yards create winning mentality

Connor Krizmanic was one of the goalscorers for Melton. (Damjan Janevski)

Melton Phoenix’s efforts are starting to earn rewards in FFV state league 5 west soccer. After a tough start to the year, the Phoenix players were showing good signs against some of the better teams – without getting the points. But in the past month, the Phoenix has won two matches, had a draw against a top five side and one really poor performance. Phoenix coach Mark Parnis said his players had been finding the scoresheet more regularly in recent weeks. “That’s been important,” he said. “We should have won other games, but weren’t finding the back of the net enough. We had a good win against Melbourne Lions and a draw against Keilor Wolves, who are a fantastic side.” After a poor last-up performance against Deakin Ducks, the Phoenix returned to the winners’ list on Saturday by defeating Maidstone United 3-1.

Parnis said 20 minutes of really good football was the difference. “We match up really well with them,” he said. “They got a goal from a mistake early in the second half. We moved the ball quite well in windy conditions. “We scored three goals in about 20 minutes … some really good work.” Jason Hill, Connor Krizmanic and Alain Nzitunga were the scorers. It was Nzitunga’s first game for the club. The win moves the Phoenix to 10th on the ladder with a 3-2-5 record. Despite the improved performances, Parnis is being cautious yet hopeful. “We’re still building and it’s going to take the whole season,” he said. “The club is getting stronger each week. We know where we sit and we are going to keep improving.”

Burras stacking up wins By Tara Murray Diggers Rest ended Wallan’s unbeaten start to the Riddell District Football League season on Saturday. In probably their best performance for the season, the Burras showed they can’t be discounted in the premiership race. The Burras led from start to finish and a win never looked in doubt, as they won 13.18 (96)-11.8 (74). Burras playing coach Jamie Lobb said it was a good performance as the side approaches full strength. “It’s easily the strongest side we’ve had on the park all season,” he said. “We’re close to full strength and we executed well. It’s always a bonus having the wind in the first quarter and we should have been further ahead. “I thought we had wasted the wind, having wasted some good scoring opportunities. “We seem to play well against the wind in the second quarter and were also good in the third quarter. “We fell away in the fourth a little bit, but we had eight changes from the week before and ran out of legs.” Despite having a 48-point lead at three-quarter time, Lobb said they knew that the Magpies would come after them in the final quarter. He said they just stuck to what they had been doing. “We knew their last quarter was their strongest,” he said. “We had a game style to play for the whole game and we tried not to change it too much. “We stuck with what we wanted to do for three quarters of the last quarter. “They kicked a couple of goals late which flattered them.” The Burras shared the goals around, with five players kicking two goals each. Lobb said Stuart Clarke and Sean Egan were the standouts in a real team performance. It was a big day on and off the field for the Burras. Tom Gleeson and Stephen Ruane both celebrated game 200, while several of the club’s premiership sides held reunions at the ground. Lobb said it was always pleasing to win on such a special occasion for the club. The win has the Burras fourth on the ladder with a 5-2 record. They have played one less game than the other sides in the top six. Lobb said every win was crucial in the fight for a top six spot. The Burras this week face Lancefield. The Burras have this season put the side’s towards the lower end of the ladder to the sword, but Lobb said it did not matter who they play, they stick to the plan. 40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 19, 2018

Sean Egan takes a high flying mark for Diggers Rest. (Damian Visentini)

In other results, Macedon proved too strong for Melton Centrals in tough conditions at Arnolds Creek Reserve. The Cats won 9.5 (59)-3.10 (28). Rockbank proved no match for Romsey, losing 21.24 (150)-2.2 (14). Braedon Billing was named the Rams’ best.

Riddell made easy work of Lancefield, winning 22.20 (152)-1.1 (7). Rupertswood returned to the top of the ladder with a 32.20 (212)-1.2 (8) victory. Todd Podolczak kicked nine goals. The Sunbury Kangaroos upset Woodend-Hesket, winning 8.7 (55)-5.9 (39).

In good signs for the Phoenix, younger players are stepping up in the reserves and displaying some useful form. Parnis said the club was also going nicely off the field, with all involved heading in the same direction. In other results, Westside Strikers had a 3-0 win against Barwon. Jordan Borg, Bradley Cashion and Hayden Formosa were the goalscorers. The win means the Strikers retain their spot at the top of the table, three points clear of Gisborne. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills defeated Laverton 2-0. Rocky Calfapietra and Yonas Sisay were the goalscorers. The Stallions are third, 10 points behind the ladder leaders. Tara Murray

Melton fails to capitalise on strong start Melton let slip a strong first quarter, registering a second straight loss in the Ballarat Football League. The Bloods had 10 scoring shots in the opening quarter against Lake Wendouree and led by 15 points at the first break. They still led at half-time despite going score-less for the second quarter, but a seven-goal-to-one third quarter turned the game in favour of the Lakers which led by 29 points at the last break. The Bloods kicked three goals in the last quarter, but it wasn’t enough and they lost 15.7 (97)-10.10 (70). It was a disappointing day for the Bloods after a promising start. They has just 10 scoring shots after quarter-time, after having that many in the first quarter. Braedan Kight kicked three goals for the Bloods and Matt Denham was named their best. Ladder-leaders Bacchus Marsh had no troubles against Redan. The Cobras led by 40 points at quarter-time and for much of the game looked on track to win by 100 points. The Lions kicked the first five goals of the last quarter to add some respectability to the score before the Cobras regrouped, winning 19.22 (136)-12.9 (81). Jake Owen kicked six goals for a second straight week and Aaron Willitts kicked five. Owen was named the Cobras’ best, along with ruckman Daniel Burton, who has returned to his form of 2016 when the Cobras won the premiership. The Cobras sit percentage clear of East Point. It was a tough start for new Melton South coach Heath Pritchard. Pritchard took over the role during the week, with the club sacking Ash Manning and Brendan Fevola stepping down to assistant coach. The Panthers were goalless in the first half against Sebastopol and while they were able to get on the scoreboard in the second half, couldn’t bridge the gap. The Burras won 9.18 (72)-3.14 (32). Mitch Golby was the best for the Panthers. The Panthers are one of two sides without a win. Darley had the bye. Tara Murray

Melton South sacks co-coach in mid-season purge Heath Pritchard will coach Melton South for the rest of the Ballarat Football League season following a reshuffle. The winless Panthers sacked co-coach Ash Manning last week and fellow co-coach Brendan Fevola stepped down into an assistant coaching role. Acting Panthers president Matthew Collins said it was a hard decision to part ways with Manning. “It didn’t come lightly,” Collins said. “We thought we were heading in different directions. We didn’t see eye to eye on a number of things. “He’s a good person. I, and the club, wish him all the best.” Manning told the Ballarat Courier he felt harshly done by. He was in his first year as senior coach at the

club, having previously played in the club’s only premiership. “Am I disappointed? Bloody oath I am. I’ve been working my absolute backside off,” he told the Courier. Courier “I’m not blaming anyone, but in my opinion I’ve worked my backside off to try and make the club better. “I think the club had to go backwards in some respects before it could go forward. We had to get a lot of things right that the club had wrong.” Collins said time constraints were behind Fevola’s decision to step down to an assistant role. The gun full-forward has played just one game this year due to an Achilles injury, which will keep him out for a few more weeks. “Last year when we signed him, he didn’t

have The Footy Show commitments,” Collins said. “It was taking up a lot of time, along with his radio show, and it makes it hard for him to get to the ground.” The club didn’t waste any time in appointing Heath Pritchard as coach for the rest of the season. Pritchard said he knew he had a challenge ahead. The new coach played his junior football at the Panthers and was on the committee for a number of years. “It’s disappointing for Ash to leave in the manner he has,” Pritchard said. “I’ll try and push the club together and build on what Ash has been doing with the club and hopefully we’ll get a few wins. “To be fair to Ash, he could have had a few wins on the board, but it didn’t happen.”

Pritchard brings vast football experience into the role. He’s been a runner at VFL side Port Melbourne for the past six years, is president and coaches one of the junior sides at Eynesbury Eagles Football Club and is also on the AFL Goldfields commission. He said he would take a recess from the commission, but would continue at the Eagles. Pritchard said he would bring a lot of what he learnt at Port Melbourne into the role. “I’ve been lucky to have worked with Gary Ayres for six years,” he said. “He encouraged me to take on this coaching role.” The Panthers’ first match under Pritchard was a tough one, losing to Sebastopol 9.18 (72)-3.14 (32) on Saturday. Tara Murray, with the Ballarat Courier

Bacchus Marsh continues to consolidate its spot in the Ballarat Netball League top six. On Saturday, the Cobras earned a hard-fought win against Redan. The Cobras led at every break, but couldn’t break the game open until the final quarter. The Cobras’ two goalers shared the scoring around, with Stacey Jeffrey shooting 25 goals and Madeline Hodgson 24. Kaila Ingham was named best on court. Melton South and Melton both had losses.

EDFL

Burnside Heights’ bid to win successive games continues following an upset loss to Hadfield. The Bears went in favourites against the winless Hawks, but couldn’t get the points, losing 13.10 (88)-8.12 (60). The Bears sit in sixth place. In division 1, Hillside had the bye.

Hockey

Manar Mahfouz, Jasmine Besanko-Farrugia, Kayla Jones (back row) and Alisha Walters, Layla Mahfouz and Declan Rafferty (front row) will represent Victoria at the School Sports Australia Championships in Tasmania. (Damian Visentini)

Melton makes a splash By Tara Murray Six Melton Swimming Club members will be in action for Victoria at the 2018 School Sports Australia Championships in Tasmania next month. Melton Swimming club’s Marc Walters said it was a big achievement to have the six swimmers involved. Manar Mahfouz, who goes to Melton Secondary College, will compete in the 50 metres freestyle and the 50 and 100 metres butterfly in the 15-16 girls age group. Mahfouz said her focus at the championships would be to take her training successfully to a competitive level. “I want to have a positive mindset and be mentally and physically ready,” she said. “I want to focus on my stroke technique and my underwater, and also to have fun and enjoy the experience. “What I would like to take from swimming in the 2018 Australian Swimming Championships is … knowing that I have done my best to perform in front of all the kids and that I represented my school in the best way possible and that I swam my hardest.”

Mahfouz recently represented Melton Swimming Club in the National Age Swimming Championships. Kayla Jones will swim in three events at the Tasmanian championships. The Southern Cross Grammar student will compete in the 15-16 years girls 50 and 200 metres butterfly and 400 metres individual medley. “I feel privileged to be a part of Victoria’s team and my goal is to swim to the best of my ability and do some personal best times,” Jones said. “While I’m in Tasmania, I would like to make lasting memories to take back home and just enjoy the experience.” Layla Mahfouz will represent Victoria for the first time. The current Victorian long-course record holder in 11-year-old girls 200 metres butterfly will compete in the 100 metres butterfly and 200 metres individual medley. The Melton Secondary College student said she was very excited about being in the Victorian squad. “My goal for the 2018 Australian Schools Swimming Championships are to try my best

and have fun,” she said. “I just want to try and get a PB [personal best] and maybe place. “I would like to come home with some medals, hopefully, and also some experience.” Maribyrnong Secondary College’s Jasmine Besanko-Farrugia will compete in the 17-19 girls 50 metres breaststroke, 50 and 100 metres butterfly, and 100 and 200 metres backstroke. Besanko-Farrugia is the current vice captain of Melton Swimming Club. Declan Rafferty, who goes to school at Darley Primary School, will compete in the 10-year-old boys 50 and 100 metres breaststroke and the 100 metres backstroke. Gilson College’s Alisha Walters will swim in the 11-year-old girls 50 and 100 metres freestyle, 50 and 100 metres breaststroke, 50 and 100 metres butterfly and 200 metres individual medley. Walters won gold in butterfly and the medley event at the Pacific Schools Games and won gold in the 100 metres butterfly and 200 metres individual medley at the Victorian state championships. All the Melton Swimming Club’s six swimmers will compete in relays at the 2018 School Sports Australia Championships.

Caroline Springs’ unbeaten start to its first Women’s Vic League 2 season continued at the weekend with 3-0 win over Gippsland. The Springers were too strong across the board, with goals to Holly Azzopardi, Laura Brown and Brittany Webster enough to secure the win, while the stoic defence added another clean sheet to an impressive season in which only four goals have been conceded in eight games. The win keeps Caroline Springs five points clear of Melbourne High, which has played one less game because of the bye.

AFL Goldfields

Bacchus Marsh and Lake Wendouree couldn’t be separated on Sunday in the AFL Goldfields’ women’s competition. In wet and windy conditions, the Cobras came from behind at three-quarter time to level the scores, with the two teams finishing on 3.4 (22). Abbey Bertram was named the Cobras’ best. Melton Centrals fell just short against Gisborne. It took Gisborne until the final quarter to score its first goal before it went on to win 2.12 (24)-2.2 (14). Brooke White was named Centrals’ best.

TAC Cup

The Western Jets fell to their third loss of the TAC Cup season at the weekend, losing to Geelong. The Jets hit the front late in the final quarter, but the Falcons ran out the game stronger to come away with a 8.10 (58)-6.12 (48) win. If it came down to a match with Australia versus Italy, I’d probably back Australia, though. How do you think Australia will go in the World Cup? I’m ’m hoping they’ll go well. I think they’ll do all right – they’ll get to the finals at least. Who is your favourite player and why? Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s now the third top scorer in international football history. I like his off-field presence, too. He’s funny and knows how to play the media. He’s always entertaining. How did you get interested in football? Getting the jersey from my Nonno really got it all going. I’m not a huge fan – I don’t follow it like others do, but keep a bit of any eye on it so I can have a bet against my mates. Which team do you think will win this year? My partner, Allycia, is of German heritage so it would be nice to see Germany take it out this year.

Australia’s man with the know-how By Ben McKay Socceroo Aaron Mooy will be facing two club teammates in Australia’s World Cup clash with Denmark. After a tight opening World Cup defeat by France the Socceroos turn their attention to a do-or-die clash with Denmark in Samara on Thursday. And there’s one Socceroo that knows the Scandinavians better than most – midfield maestro Aaron Mooy. Mooy counts two Danes as teammates at Huddersfield, playing against a handful of others in the English Premier League. Matias Jorgensen and Jonas Lossl line up for the Terriers, forming crucial parts of the club’s defence. Lossl started every game in the Huddersfield goal, with Jorgensen at centre-back. “Jorgensen played every minute of the season. The only two to do that were him and the goalkeeper,” Mooy told AAP. “They’re very durable, dependable and consistent. “Jorgensen is a very good defender. He’s always there. “Never whinges. Never misses training. Mr Dependable.” Lossl is unlikely to be spotted in Denmark’s goal as he plays second fiddle to established No.1 Kasper Schmeichel – one of Mooy’s Premier League rivals. Schmeichel started and starred in Denmark’s defeat of Peru, a 1-0 win in which the gloveman made six saves. The last Danish goalkeeper to make more saves in a World Cup match was his father, legendary Manchester United custodian Peter Schmeichel, at France ’98.

But Jorgensen is likely to play a role, given an injury to William Kvist in the tight win over the South Americans. Jorgensen, 28, came on as a substitute as the Scandinavians looked to preserve their lead over Peru and could now graduate to a starting position. Mooy said it would be odd to face his teammates in Russia given the close bonds formed during the club’s successful fight against relegation. “There were a few jokes back in December

when we drew them,” Mooy said. “Because we were in a pressure situation towards the end, there weren’t that many for a few months. “And then when we survived they came back out.” The other two players based in England’s top flight are Andreas Christensen of Chelsea and Tottenham superstar Christian Eriksen. Mooy faced Christensen, 22, twice this season, including on the penultimate weekend of the season when Town secured a gritty 1-1 draw away from home that confirmed their

Premier League status. Australia’s key midfield man only faced Eriksen once, last September when the star 26-year-old helped cut Huddersfield down to size with a 4-0 defeat, Town’s biggest home loss of the campaign. “He’s an excellent player, a very intelligent footballer,” Mooy said of Eriksen. “He can score goals, can create goals. He’s a very smart player.” AAP

Jeep’s Trackhawk makes its mark By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring There’s something gloriously ridiculous about the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. This triumph by high-performance SRT engineers has given the world a 2.5-tonne off-road vehicle with a 700 horsepower supercharged V8 that can leap from a standstill to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds. Then call on its huge Brembo brakes and specifically designed Pirelli tyres to bring it to a standstill in just 37 metres. A few weeks back we finished our news story about the announcement that the Jeep Trackhawk was coming Down Under by saying we planned to borrow a test vehicle from Jeep and carry out a local road test from our base on the Gold Coast. Jeep Oz went one big step better by inviting us to spend a track day at Phillip Island to really push the big Hawk to its limits. Visually, the Trackhawk stands out from the standard Grand Cherokee by using a bolder front fascia with larger air dams, dual vents in the bonnet and widely flared wheel arches. Inside, the Trackhawk’s details are in metal, chrome and carbon-fibre. A three-spoke sports flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters behind it. Nappa leather seats provide good support without compromising too much on comfort. Jeep’s Uconnect 4 system works through an 8.4-inch high-res touchscreen, giving access to Performance Pages that display lap times and instant readouts for power and torque outputs. There’s also navigation, Bluetooth and connection through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Driving

The big Jeep/Chrysler V8 certainly sounds the part and brought smiles to the faces of all the

Control. Standing hard on the brake pedal, flooring the accelerator, waiting two seconds then releasing the brakes. The big Jeep momentarily haunches at the back, the Pirellis grip the track at all four wheels, the engine screams, the competition grade auto trans makes lighting fast shifts – far faster than any driver can achieve – and you feel you’re sitting in a rocket. Onto the brakes and the big Jeep decelerates hard, though not quite as quickly as the best cars which typically are in the 32 to 34 metre range, Trackhawk came to rest after 37 metres.

Moose test

Named for the notorious incident where a new Mercedes A-Class tipped over in 1997 during early testing. The Moose Test is a violent high-speed swerve-recover-swerve-recover manoeuvre intended to replicate a real life 80km/h road incident. The very large Jeep certainly did well on the test and showed impressive ability at hard, fast changes of direction.

Track time A 4WD that can be taken to track days … the mind boggles. (Supplied)

journalists. It has an uneven rumble at idle, the supercharger has a serious shriek (though a bit more volume would have been appreciated) and big revs brought big noises. Wonderful.

Go-to-whoa

Much as it would have been nice to take the Trackhawk straight onto the track at PI we firstly carried out some testing on the main straight. A popular event at street machine

events the go-to-whoa is one of the most realistic tests of a car in real life. Quite simply it consists of taking the car (or SUV in this case) from a standstill to 100 km/h as fast as possible – then getting onto full braking to bring it back to a standstill. The big Hawk took just 3.7 seconds to get to 100, then 37 metres to come to a full stop. Three-point-seven seconds is ridiculously fast and is achieved by choosing Launch

OK, now it was time to get serious. Track time at Philip Island with no holds barred. With Australian multiple rally champion Cody Crocker and Supercars racer Karl Reindler riding shotgun we put in some hot laps travelling at speeds that just didn’t seem possible in what is sort of a light truck. Jeep Trackhawk accelerates like the devil, turns promptly into corners with only an initial trace of understeer, all the time belying its mass. Sadly we didn’t get enough time to really tie ourselves down to decent passes at the scarily fast PI circuit. Perhaps we will grab a Trackhawk for our
