In honour of Oliver

By Esther Lauaki A Melton mother wants to spare others the same heartache she is enduring. December 12 last year is a day that Katie Williams will never forget – when she lost her son Oliver, just 24 days old, who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Six months on, she’s launched an online crowdfunding campaign for Red Nose Day this Friday to create a legacy for her baby boy. “He was a healthy little boy, everything was fine,” Ms Williams told Star Weekly. “That morning he woke up as normal and

had his morning bottle, I burped him and changed his nappy and he went back to sleep. “When I came back later to wake up his brother, I checked on Oliver and he was fine. “I then came back to check on him about a half an hour after and I found him blue and cold.” She performed CPR on her son and paramedics’ efforts to save Oliver’s life were unsuccessful. “I knew of SIDS, but I never really thought it would happen to me,” Ms Williams said. “I’ve had three kids before Oliver, so I just never expected this.

“Now that it has happened to me and I’ve been part of support groups on Facebook, I have seen how many people have actually lost a child to SIDS and it’s something that’s not spoken of that much. “I just want to make a difference and help others and hopefully see a future where no babies die of SIDS ever again.” Hundreds of children die suddenly and unexpectedly each year from stillbirth, SIDS and fatal sleep accidents. This year is the 30th anniversary of Red Nose Day and the charity will mark the milestone this Friday (June 29) by launching

three research and education projects focused on reducing late-term stillbirth from 28 weeks gestation, a SIDS book and a Safe Sleeping e-Learning Course for early childhood educators. Ms Williams said she was inspired by the work of the Red Nose charity and wanted to support its research by raising at least $1000. “I want to do what I can to help prevent others go through the same thing. “Even if it’s $100, that’s great, but if it’s $1000 even better.” Donate: bit.ly/2ts2dJf

Landfill fine for exceeding waste By Esther Lauaki The operators of the Ravenhall landfill have been fined nearly $8000 for spilling waste over more than twice the area they were licensed for. Environment Protection Authority Victoria used aerial images taken by a drone to monitor the Ravenhall site, as well as others around the state, in a blitz on licence breaches. Cleanaway subsidiary Landfill Operations Pty Ltd, was issued an EPA infringement notice this month.

Landfill Operation’s licence had a tipping face limit (the area where waste can be located) of 1800 square metres but aerial images found that waste was filling more than double that area at the Christies Road site. EPA chief executive Nial Finegan said licence holders are expected to regularly monitor and ensure their own compliance or face fines. “Landfill sites can be a challenge because of their size or remoteness,” Mr Finegan said. “Gaining access and then undertaking on-site measurements to ensure compliance

using traditional methods can be time and resource consuming. “By using different technologies such as drones, aerial images and satellites we are sending a message that we are watching and no site in Victoria is beyond our gaze.”

He said aircraft imaging at a specific point in time ensured highly accurate measurements. Mr Finegan said Landfill Operations had dramatically exceeded their tipping area and was fined $7929. “EPA has the technology to observe, detect and regulate without the need to conduct on-the-ground compliance activities,” he said. “Aerial photography has been very successful in cases involving illegal dumping and EPA is also investigating the use of the satellite to help monitor sites and catch offenders.”

Safety plea over winter fires threat

All revved up and ready to roll Karellyn Dangar and Krystyna Valente love putting a whole lot of “fun” into their fundraising. They are part of the Jesters Rod and Custom Club, which will host a rock ’n’ roll dance next month in Bacchus Marsh to raise money for Camp Quality. Event organiser Jill Peterson said the club was enthusiastic about supporting Camp Quality, a children’s family cancer charity.

“We’re trying to do something different this time,” Ms Peterson said. “We hold monthly show ’n’ shine cruises during the daylight saving months and we thought we’d change it up this time. It’s just a bit of fun.” She said the car club raised more than $5000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal this year. Ms Peterson hoped that the July 28

rock ’n’ roll dance would resonate with people of all generations. “We’ve got a lot of younger members and they know nothing of rock’n’roll, but they will learn. The 1950s and ’60s eras fit well with the car culture.” Tickets cost $15 pre-booked or $20 at the door. Information: bit.ly/2tgSnee

Residents are being asked to stay vigilant during the “forgotten fire season”. The Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade have warned that winter brings with it more preventable house fires than any other season. CFA chief Steve Warrington said there was no off season when it came to fires. “Winter is a time where we’re spending more time inside keeping warm by enjoying an open fire and a home-cooked meal or cranking up the heater,” Mr Warrington said. “It’s also when we have to be most vigilant, as there are more residential fire risks within the house. “Now is the time to check your electric blankets and heaters. “If there is a chance something is faulty, don’t take the risk.” Fire brigades last week launched the Residential Fire Safety campaign to raise awareness of some of the ways people can be safer around the house. Other fire safety tips include keeping clothing a safe distance from heaters, cleaning clothes dryer filters, turning off electrical appliances not in use, avoiding placing weighty objects on beds with electric blankets and taking care when cooking. The fire and rescue services also urge residents to replace old smoke alarms with new units. New smoke alarms have lithium batteries with a 10-year life. Details: bit.ly/2MIhRcc Esther Lauaki

Goats to go in Lerderderg park By Esther Lauaki Feral goats wreaking havoc on the environment in Lerderderg State Park will be culled in a three-year conservation program by Parks Victoria. The program, which started last month, aims to help protect and rehabilitate native flora and fauna of state significance at the 20,000-hectare state park, including the vulnerable box ironbark trees and more than 370 native plant

species. More than 130 birds species, including the swift parrot, great egret, and powerful and masked owls, have been found in the park. Parks Victoria chief ranger Stuart Lardner said the park was also an important habitat for wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, mountain brushtail possums, and the brush-tailed phascogale. An EPA spokesman said feral goats have been in the area since before the state park was established in 1988.

There are about 200 goats thought to be in the park. “Feral goats are prolific grazers that diminish native grasses, shrubs and trees, causing erosion, preventing regeneration and taking the food of native animals. They can also foul waterholes and transport weeds and diseases,” Mr Lardner said. He said the program would be carried out under strictly controlled conditions to ensure safe, effective and humane practices.

Some sections of the park will be temporarily closed to the public for periods of two-to-three days each month during the program. Unaffected sections of the park will remain open to the public. Other conservations programs delivered by Parks Victoria include monitoring of grazer and plant populations, revegetation, weed spraying, controlled burning and animal control. The Little Life Lab, a two-week, hands-on science experience that educates children on the world of science and biology, opens daily at Woodgrove Shopping Centre during the July school holidays. The program involves a series of interactive and educational stations. The first week’s theme will be Our Amazing Bodies and the second week’s theme will be Protecting our Planet. “To them, it’s all about having fun and playing, but as scientists we know they are learning at the same time,” Dr Parker said. Chill out with winter holiday activities

By Esther Lauaki

(Marco De Luca)

Shoppers are already familiar with Georgia’s coloured-in box at Ballan IGA but the pint-sized seven-year-old is asking them to dig deeper to help out the Ballarat Soup Bus. Georgia started a food drive last year, using her decorated box as a collection point for cans and packet foods. At the time, she was working toward her promise badge as a Joey in the 1st Ballan Scouts group. She’s now a Cub and is taking her efforts one step further, this year asking for non-perishable food, blankets, coats and men’s shoes to help people in need. Her father Leo Stibbard, a Cub leader, said being an ambassador for the Ballarat Soup Bus last year planted a seed of generosity in Georgia. “When we first went into IGA to collect the box last year, I saw Georgia’s box was empty and thought, ‘oh no’,” Mr Stibbard said. “I sent Georgia down the back of the store … and quickly ran around to collect some things to put in the box just to make her day.” But a staff member ushered the father and daughter to the storeroom where 18 large boxes of donated goods from the community were awaiting collection. “She was super excited and glowing to see what the residents of Ballan had donated,” Mr Stibbard said. “I know from watching Georgia grow, that she’s gaining a lot from doing this and being part of the community. Georgia’s 2017 efforts earned her the prestigious Messenger of Peace badge and led to a nomination for Ballarat Young Citizen of the Year by Ballarat Soup Bus volunteers. Kids and teens are sorted with activities and events to keep them busy these winter school holidays. Melton council’s vacation care program is open to all primary school-aged children and includes an excursion to Scienceworks, a World Cup-themed day and cooking incursions. Melton and Caroline Springs libraries are hosting free activities including animation workshops, recycled art and craft, mini maestros and a chess tournament. Teenagers won’t miss out on the fun with laser tag and indoor rock climbing, a ghost and street art tours offered as part of the teen program. The Get Activated Stay Motivated introduces kids aged between 1 and 12 years to a range of new sports. Melton Mayor Bob Turner said the affordable school holiday programs were a fun way to keep kids and teens active and entertained during their break. “The school holiday activities promote learning, healthy lifestyles and encourage the youth in our community to socialise and meet like-minded people,” Cr Turner said. “Our vacation care program is also a big help to busy parents and guardians of young children who still need to work through the holidays.” Bookings required. Upgrade hope for Darley Park By Esther Lauaki Plans for a $2.25 million upgrade of Darley Park could be a step closer to reality. A Darley Park Recreation Reserve user group presented a business case to Moorabool council last week for consideration in this year’s budget. The business case outlines a proposed hub that would include youth facilities, unisex changerooms, public amenities and a venue that would have meeting rooms and capacity for about 500 people. An AFL Goldfields report in 2016 stated that the park needed upgraded changerooms, umpire changerooms, netball facilities, lighting, netball courts and a multi-purpose pavilion. Darley Football Netball Club president Ray Newton said the club had outgrown its home grounds, having expanded from three junior teams three years ago to 21 this season. He said the user group’s vision for the park would benefit the entire local community. “The proposed extended use of the centre, well beyond bringing it up to the standard required for sporting clubs, will provide employment opportunities in Darley where they are currently very limited,” Mr Newton told the council meeting. “It will attract, and cater for, far more users than it currently does and should, in fact, be managed to become a revenue source to provide back to the community in return for investment.” The user group – which comprises sports

clubs, community groups and recreational users of the park – has proposed putting up $250,000 for the upgrade and requested that council contribute $1 million, with the balance to be sourced from federal or private funding. Council infrastructure general manager Phil Jeffrey supported the proposed plans but recommended the project be referred to the council’s capital improvement program for assessment against other projects and consideration for future funding.

‘‘

All the clubs are experiencing high - Phil Jeffrey demands

’’

“All clubs are experiencing high demands and the number of teams are increasing across all sports,” Mr Jeffrey wrote in a report tabled at the meeting. “The introduction of female football, in particular, has highlighted the inability of the ageing pavilion to adequately cater for this growth. The lack of appropriate community function and meeting space within Darley has also been raised. “Officers agree that the facilities need to be improved to cater for the rapid development of female football. “Whilst the proposal does have some merit, it is difficult to foresee how council could accommodate a financial contribution of this magnitude.”

Ballan Lions’ big serve The Ballan Lions Club is exapnding its vision in a bid to serve more people in the community. The club is establishing the first Victorian Lions Club branch especially for people on the autism spectrum. Ballan club secretary Wayne Buckland said the plan was all about giving more meaning to the Lions’ motto, “We serve”. “One of the main projects we support as a branch is the local Keeley’s Cause project, raising money to buy iPads for children with autism,” Mr Buckland said. “We know of a Lions club in Sydney with a branch for the autistic and thought it was a wonderful idea.

“I have nieces and a nephew on the autism spectrum … we want to give these people the opportunity to serve the community as well. “Our mantra is, ‘We serve’, so why not give them the chance to also serve and provide them with a place where they can be comfortable? “Anybody from within the community residing in any town within Victoria are welcomed and encouraged to join.” Ballan Lions Club will hold an information event on Sunday, July 8, from 2pm at the Ballan Mechanics Institute.

Enviro groups fight eel fishing bid By Esther Lauaki Melton environmentalists are lobbying against an application for a commercial eel fishing operation off the Werribee River. The Melton Environment Group and Pinkerton Landcare and Environment Group are fighting an application to the Victorian Fishing Authority for a commercial fishing licence which was up for public consultation until last Friday. The proposed eel fishing operation would involve the use of about 20 fyke nets along the Werribee River between Exford Road bridge

and Cobbledicks Ford Streamside Reserve in Wyndham Vale. Melton Environment Group president Daryl Akers, who is also the secretary of the Pinkerton Landcare group, said locals were “appalled” to learn about the application. “Our main concern is that this operation will endanger the platypus population, which is already under threat in the Werribee River,” Mr Akers said. “The proposed commercial netting operation will involve the use of fyke nets. “When scientifically qualified researchers use these nets for surveying platypus numbers,

they have to comply with rigorous animal ethics standards including frequent checks of nets and nets being set in a particular way to protect platypus.” He said the ethical standards also reduced the risk to animals such as the rakali water rat, turtles and waterfowl getting caught in the nets. “As well as the considerable threat to such an iconic Australian species as the platypus, commercial netting will also endanger other native wildlife,” Mr Akers said. “The numbers of rakali are already threatened by foxes and dogs.

“Similarly, many aquatic birds feed in the Werribee River. These include ducks, coots, moorhens and cormorants.” VFA fisheries management director Dallas D’Silva said the authority would make a decision later this week. “We go through a process with all applications and we’ve got a number of submissions to consider,” Mr D’Silva said. “We are considering a number of factors including the importance of that area of the Werribee River to the local fishing community, its importance to the native plant and wildlife as the residents of the area.”

Snags a hit with judges A popular Caroline Springs butcher shop has been crowned a sausage king. Rainbow Meats, located at Caroline Springs Square, took out the top gongs in three different categories in the 2018 Sausage King awards for Melbourne central. Rainbow Meats group managing director Frank Russo said it was a real feather in the shop’s cap. “To take three first places in the Melbourne central local district is a fantastic feeling,” Mr Russo said. “It’s a very competitive field, sausages these days are a big seller. “We’re always changing flavours and the quality of our product to come up with something different.” Rainbow Meats won first places for its traditional Aussie beef sausage, English pork sausage and spicy Texan beef burger sausage.

The team will now move on to the Victorian state finals, which will be held later this year. “Having won three categories, means we get three shots at taking out a state title and moving through to nationals,” Mr Russo said. Tate Papworth

I have lived in Moorabool for the past 10 years and I have worked as a GP at Ballan District Health and Care for the past year. How did you decide that you wanted to be a doctor? Medicine is in my family. My father was a doctor and so I’ve followed in his footsteps.

What do you love about Ballan? One of the reasons I enjoy working in Ballan is that I think there’s a really good connected team here – from the allied health professionals to the practice nurses, and of course my GP

in women’s health and wellbeing. Talking about health is, of course, important for everyone, not just women. Having open conversations about your health with your doctor, especially about preventive care, can help your care.

Julie Walsh has been living life poolside for as long as she can remember. The Melton Swimming Club stalwart has been volunteering for 40 years, with her efforts recognised this month with a Swimming Victoria Volunteer of the Year award. These days she’s club secretary and competitions officer, but she has held every executive position on the committee and has volunteered for the regional metro-west swimming district for about 18 years. Ms Walsh continues to have a hand in most of the Melton club’s affairs, ranging from planning events to fundraising and anything else required to make the club run “as strong and smoothly as possible”. She said she first took to swimming at the Maidstone club as a youngster. “When the family moved to Melton, we were commuting back and forward to swim daily for training,” Ms Walsh said. “In 1978 a group of parents got together and decided to form a swimming club in Melton. My father was one of the coaches and he was also heavily involved on the first committee of the club. “My whole family swam – four brothers and two sisters.” Her vision is to continue developing the Melton club and “keep my father’s legacy going strong”. “Being involved in this great club means a lot,” Ms Walsh said. “I have had my two children swim for the club, but since my youngest retired from swimming 10 years ago, I stayed on to assist the running of the club. “I now have the great pleasure of watching my two grandchildren swim for this wonderful club – so that’s four generations.”

hard to unwind. Kings Park Botanic Gardens are just a short stroll from the city centre, and while the ascent up to the hill can be a bit taxing the views are worth it. From there, you can take in the city and

the winding Swan River that dominates the landscape, and also check out the Aboriginal art museum that sits just behind the lookout. It doesn’t feel like you’re in a capital city as

It had been over 20 years since I’d travelled west over the Nullarbor, and for the life of me I don’t know why I waited so long. Searching for a mid-winter getaway for a bit of sun and relaxation, most of us in Melbourne look north to tropical Queensland, but I decided to shift my gaze to the west and set my sights on Perth. I was not disappointed. I lived in Western Australia as a kid, and the vivid memories of sun-kissed beaches and a relaxed way of life were a big part of making this my weekend away. I grabbed flights for about $400 return and made my way off on a dreary Melbourne morning, landing in blinding sunshine and a balmy 25C winter day. One of the great things about Perth, I discover, is just how laid back it is. Two minutes after driving away from the airport and you’re in leafy suburbs; 15 minutes later you’re in the middle of the city and ready to head out exploring. I make my way down to the waterfront for a bit of breakfast. I’ve heard horror stories about the price of food and, more importantly, coffee in Perth, but I have a great caffeine hit and breakfast on the banks of the Swan River for the same price you’d expect to pay at a Melbourne CBD cafe. Boats come and go from the marina, and there’s a general buzz building along the boardwalk as families and couples get out and enjoy the Saturday sunshine along the river. It’s a city that seems perfectly designed for walking, with prime riverfront real estate set aside for parks and walking trails rather than buildings. With shopping, cafes and even a mini-golf course along the boardwalk it wasn’t

you stroll through the gardens, the smells of eucalyptus and wattle filling the air and all manner of bird life calling out overhead. Even if you’re not much of a bushwalker, the gardens are the perfect chance to unwind.

When I hear of how dreary it is in Melbourne on the same day, I can’t help but smile. No trip to Perth would be complete without a trip to the beach, and it’s there I become truly envious of our western friends. I make my way out to Cottesloe and Scarborough beaches, and while the water was not quite warm enough for a dip, I made a mental note to come back in the warmer months. We may have some OK beaches in Melbourne, but Perth is spoilt for choice with miles of coastline just brimming with beach fun. Even in the depths of winter, there are plenty of people out catching waves, playing a bit of beach cricket or just soaking up the sun. Ready for summer yet? If sports is more your go, as it is mine, head over and have a football experience like few others sitting at a West Coast or Fremantle game, which give new meaning to the phrase “one-eyed supporter”. Coming from a sports mad city like Melbourne, it is great to see the passion for the game no matter where you may be. For a night out, I head to the Northbridge area, where a swathe of restaurants, bars and clubs are within walking distance of each other – perfect for when you don’t know the area. It may seem like a long way to go for a weekend, but Perth did not disappoint and I’m planning on making it a regular mid-winter trip to escape these gloomy Melbourne days.

VU Polytechnic – where excellence is the stock in trade Amid a shortage of trades skills, with many employers unable to fill positions, many students with an interest in pursuing a trades career can feel stranded or misdirected into university pathways because, well, “that’s just the way things are”. VU Polytechnic, the TAFE division of Victoria University, has a superb list of Vocational Education and Training (VET) study options to help. They include bricklaying, construction (building and estimating), building design (architectural), building surveying, cabinet making, carpentry, joinery, electrotechnology, engineering, fabrication trade, mechanical trade, engineering technology, furniture finishing, furniture making, industrial automation and control, joinery, plumbing, civil construction, signs and graphics. Bryce Williamson is a former VU Polytechnic student who has gained much from taking the VET path. He studied certificate II in plumbing (preapprenticeship course), upskilled to certificate IV in plumbing and services and became the winner of the 2017 Energy Safe Victoria Award.

Far left: Bryce Williamson won the 2017 Energy Safe Victoria Award.

“The resources are excellent and I’ve received so much help from the staff,” Bryce said. “It’s a great place to study. Many of the teachers have also owned businesses in the past, so I knew I was being taught by experts in the field. “They put in a lot of work to ensure students gain as much knowledge as possible and I believe this is one of the main reasons I was able to win the award.” VU Polytechnic generates qualifications to get a foot in the door of trades, engineering and manufacturing, which are among Australia’s biggest employers. Learning is hands-on, delivered by teachers with leading industry qualifications. The Construction Hub at the Sunshine campus has high-tech labs

and dynamic workshops. Apprentice students work on real-world projects. What if your daughter or son wants to work in tourism, hospitality or events? These are also high-demand areas for employers. VU Polytechnic offers study options in hospitality management, commercial cookery, travel and tourism management and event management. Jen Seymen, a VU Polytechnic graduate who completed an advance diploma of hospitality,

went on to pursue higher education at VU, gaining a bachelor of business in hospitality management. “My course gave me the confidence to move forward in my career and opportunities to build my professional network,” Jen said. This year, VU Polytechnic launched a full suite of hospitality, cookery, tourism and events programs. The Footscray Nicholson hospitality training

centre has three commercial kitchens, including two demonstration kitchens, and a training bar. It also has an award-winning 150-seat training restaurant (VenU) with skills practised in a live environment. Students are exposed to high-profile industry partnerships including Lancemore Group’s Mansion Hotel & Spa at Werribee Park, Crown Melbourne, TFE Hotels and Radisson on Flagstaff Gardens.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets his freak on at this Sunshine West burger joint Cruise up the outer end of Somerville Road of a night and you’ll not find a lot open. Just about all the many commercial operations have shut up shop until tomorrow. Sure, some of the freight places work way outside 9-to-5 routines, but the tradie-style cafes on almost every block are most certainly not open. But Burger Freaks is. Roshan Altendorff has been running Burger Freaks for about three months, with the daytime trade all about the local, hungry workforce. Come night-time, though, it’s all about burgers – and home delivery. Burger Freaks is on both Menulog and Uber. But why sit at home – and gamble with the fickle travelling ability of burgers – when you can pay a visit? The Burger Freaks dining area is as unadorned – and virulently non-hipster – as you’re likely to find. It gets points from us for that – but it would all be for nowt if the food isn’t up to scratch. It is. The chips ($4) are good and hot. The Mate – with beef patty, cheese, caramelised onion, beetroot, bacon, lettuce and barbecue sauce – costs $10.50 or $14.50 with chips and a can of drink thrown in. It’s beaut. The California ($11.50, $15.50) – with beef patty, double cheese, double bacon, barbecue sauce and American mustard – is a bit more

SPORT Depleted Burras dig in to hold on for a welcome win An undermanned Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list in the Riddell District Netball League. Missing several players and with others carrying injuries, the Burras came from behind against Romsey to pull off their best win of the season. Burras’ coach Pam Strong was thrilled with her team’s performance. She said it had been a tough few weeks for the side. “It was really good considering we only have five A-grade players available,” she said. “It’s been like that the last few games. “We’ve had girls up from B-grade and they were great and we even played one out of position in the centre.

“We’ve been struggling with illness and injuries. It’s pleasing to get a win like that after a couple of disappointing games.” Strong said while they had been struggling with numbers, they weren’t getting blown out of games, showing they are still around the standard of other finals’ contenders. The Burras defeated the Redbacks, 45-44. Strong said it was a good match. “We got eight goals up at one point and then they got seven goals up,” she said. “We would have a bad three minutes and then they would, and the other team would capitalise. “Everything levelled out and only with one and a half minutes to go scores were level.” Strong said there was a different feeling at

three-quarter time than there had been in previous rounds. The Burras have held leads against some of the top sides before fading. She said this week they were full of confidence heading into the final quarter. “We spoke at three-quarter time … Everyone felt really good and it was a bit different. Really positive,” she said. “There was the belief we can win. “We’ve changed a few things at training after the Rockbank loss, and it’s starting to come together.” Kathie Dicker shot 38 goals from 45 attempts to be the best shooter on court. Strong said Olivia Thomas was strong in the midcourt, while Jorgia Leonard stood up

Tough lesson for Cobras By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh didn’t come switched on to play on Saturday and the Sunbury Lions made them pay. Sitting comfortably in the Ballarat Netball League top six, the Cobras got a true indication of the gap between themselves and the top sides when they played the undefeated Lions. A poor start proved costly for the Cobras, who trailed by nine goals at quarter-time. The second quarter was more even and the Cobras did reduce to the margin back to five goals. However the second half saw the Lions go to another level as they nailed an impressive 65-44 win. Cobras’ coach Michael Saker said he was disappointed with his team’s performance. “I don’t think we came out with a strong start and that was our focus against them,” he said. “Quite clearly, when you go down nine goals in the first quarter, you’re a long way back. “We need to be firing from the word go against the good teams, as once they get a little bit of a jump on you we’re done. “Sometimes we got complacent with our decision-making and got a bit lazy with our work rate.” Saker said that at times they showed what they could do, like early in the second quarter, but they weren’t able to do it for long enough. He said those lapses proved costly and teams like Sunbury would exact a toll for them. He said timing issues, poor decision-making and mental fatigue were some of the reasons for the lapses. That meant the Cobras turned the ball back over after gaining turnovers and were smashed in the rebounding count. But Saker said it was not all a matter of doom and gloom for the Cobras, who slipped one spot to fifth. This is one of their best starts to a season in a number of years as they look to break their finals drought. “They [Sunbury] are a quality team,” Saker said. “I’m disappointed, but at the same time we have a lot to learn out of that. “We had a pretty good season last season and we’ve topped up in defence and the attacking end. “The girls want to play finals. We missed out last year and you have to beat the good teams to do that.” The Cobras will this week face third-placed Lake Wendouree. Saker is hoping to see more of the sort of performance they put out against Redan the previous week. “It will be a tough game and they play a similar style to us,” he said. “Hopefully, it’s not too windy up there, as when our shooters are on, they’re on. “We went in with a bit of a game plan at the start of the season. We looked at Redan 36 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 26, 2018

coming up from B-grade. Normally a defender, Leonard spent time in the centre. She also praised the efforts of Shelby Strong who shot just seven goals, but with Carly Harrison missing, worked hard in the midcourt and sending the ball into the circle. Strong said they couldn’t take any game lightly. “We understand the hard work it takes to make finals,” she said. “It’s such an even season, which is so different to previous years.” In other results, Melton Centrals returned to the winners’ list with a 45-24 win against Broadford, while Rockbank lost to Macedon 42-34. Melton Thoroughbreds continue to put the pressure on the top sides in Big V men’s division 2. The Thoroughbreds played two matches at the weekend and came away with the points in both games. On Saturday night, they defeated Southern Peninsula Sharks 80-77 at home, before backing it up on the Sunday, defeating Wallan Panthers, 81-75 at R.B. Robson Stadium. The Thoroughbreds sit sixth. In the women’s division 2 competition, the Thoroughbreds lost to Wallan Panthers 68-58. The Thoroughbreds sit seventh after two consecutive losses.

and wanted to get that and take the challenge to Sunbury. Next week, Lakers and Sebas [Sebastopol] – and they have to be on the cards for us to get wins. Get those two, cement a good spot in the top six. You have to bring your A game for four strong quarters.”

In other results, Melton South upset second-placed East Point 44-38 to move within one game of the top six. A poor first quarter proved costly for Darley against Ballarat, with Ballarat winning 42-36.

Spring Hills did a demolition job on Balmoral in FFV state league 4 west on Saturday night. The Stallions found the back of the net three times in each half, to defeat Balmoral 6-0. Rocky Calfapietra scored twice in the win, Rhys Main, Blake D’Antino, Charlie Nash and Robert Magro all scored one goal. The Stallions move up to second on the ladder. In state league 5 west, Westside Strikers had a 2-1 win against West Point and Melton Phoenix lost to Barwon 1-0. Cobras survive a scare By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh held off a fast-finishing Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. At three-quarter time the Cobras looked set to go on and have a big win against a finals contender. That all changed in the final quarter when a steadying goal to Jake Owen proved to be enough and the Cobras won 15.13 (103)-13.10 (88). Cobras’ coach Travis Hodgson said it wasn’t a case of them playing bad in the final quarter, but the Lions lifted to another level. “I thought we were in a bit of trouble,” he said. “Sunbury came at us pretty hard and I reckon they looked half a chance to get over us when they got to within a couple of goals. “In the end, we were able to find a goal, mainly off the back of Jake Owen’s ability to win a one-on-one when we desperately needed it.” For much of the day the Cobras looked in control. They led at every break and could quite easily have had a much bigger margin. Hodgson said moving the ball fast to their forwards made a big difference. “I thought for our dominance early and a lot of ball inside 50, we didn’t have a lot to show for it. “They rolled numbers back pretty hard and it was pretty crowded and it made it hard to score. “We didn’t use the ball as well as we probably could have. In the second quarter we started to get reward for our effort and actually at three-quarter time probably thought we might have been able to go on with it.” He said credit to Sunbury that they were able to get back into the game. Owen and Ryley Stuhldreier kicked four goals apiece for the Cobras, and both were named in the best. Hodgson said Daniel Burton dominated in the ruck and his ability to get the ball forward out of contests was crucial. Nicholas Stuhldreier, Liam Mullen and Logan Blundell were the others named as best. The win cements the Cobras’ spot on top of the ladder on percentage ahead of East Point. Hodgson said they could have several players back next week. “We’ll take that win, we had seven out of our best 22, so that takes the edge off us. “We could get as many as five back. A lot were short-team injuries. “Alec Del Papa, Billy Griffiths, Daniel Foley and Trent Angwin should all be back. Three of those players were named, before pulling out on Thursday and Friday.” In other results, Darley was too strong for Ballarat, winning 10.13 (73)-2.10 (22). Melton South was smashed by East Point, losing 24.20 (164)-5.6 (36). Melton had the bye.

Brent Tuckey kicked four goals in a best on ground performance. (Damian Visentini)

Burras march over Lancefield Diggers Rest and Melton Centrals had no trouble accounting for Lancefield and Broadford respectively in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. It wasn’t the prettiest of wins for the Burras, but they were never in trouble against the Tigers. The Burras led by 30 points at quarter-time, but the game could have been over by that stage if they had kicked straight. They were able to increase the lead in each quarter and went on to win 22.20 (152)-6.3 (39). Josh Wallace, Thomas Taylor and Brent Tuckey kicked four goals apiece for the Burras and Tuckey was named their best player. The Burras sit fifth, but have played a game less than all the sides above them. Melton Centrals moved up a spot to eighth and a game outside the top six, with a convincing win against Broadford. It was one of those games Centrals was expected to win and win big and they did exactly that. They kicked at least five goals in every quarter, saving their best for last with nine last-quarter goals. Centrals won 28.19 (187)-4.5 (29). It was a tough day for Rockbank against last year’s premiers Macedon. Just one goal was scored in the first quarter. The Cats dominated the contest after quarter-time, winning 25.10 (160)-3.5 (23). Matt Knox had a day out kicking eight goals for the Cats. For the Rams it was their young leaders who stood up. Alan Greenwood, Ricky Cameron and Jordan and Mitch Baumgartner were among the best. Devils grow into their game as debut season unfolds Darley continues to improve each week as it looks for its first win in the AFL Goldfields’ women’s competition. In their first season in the competition, the Devils have not won a game, yet have dealt well with a situation that finds them playing sides that have been around for a number of years. Devils coach Peter Curran said the season was not about the wins and losses. “The work rate is always there,” he said. “It’s about how they grow as a team and the culture of the teams. “There isn’t a game they haven’t improved in something, whether it’s kicking or marking. There’s so much potential for next year.” Several Devils have played before, but the side also has a number of first-time players. Curran said he had to change his coaching style for the new players, but said he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The focus has been on the basic skills and the game style – it’s about learning the fundamentals,” he said. “Some of the younger ones have played football at school. The newer ones have come in for the love of the game and are learning football.” Curran said injuries had meant the club had been up and down with numbers, but it was still attracting new players. He said some of the new players were having an impact. “There’s some talented players who have joined the club. “We’ve got a girl from Darwin who has moved down here and still wants to play. “Emily Keep, the daughter of a club legend, signed up two days before one of our recent matches. She started kicking the footy and she’s got a massive mark and natural ability. One of

her friends has come across, too … she’ll be a handy player as well.” Curran said the support from the club for the women’s side had been massive and everyone was right behind them. On Sunday, the Devils lost to Gisborne. Darley trailed by 10 points at quarter-time, but failed to kick a goal from there, losing 9.12 (66)-1.3 (9). Kim Bessell kicked the Devils’ goal. Sally Fairweather, Veronica Thatcher and Katy Greig were named the Devils’ best. In other results, Bacchus Marsh lost to ladder-leader Redan. The Lions had a day out, winning 15.20 (110)-1.0 (6). The Cobras sit in fifth place. Sixth-placed Melton Centrals lost to Carisbrook. Tara Murray

AVELYN MIRANDA, MIR PROPRIETOR RIETOR OF HARVEY NORMAN NORMA BEDDIN NG WATERGARDENS WATERGARDE Which team do you support? France rance – because I love the language, lol. I’d say Italy because they have cute guys but they didn’t qualify this year. France has always had a good team, with young talent such as Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann coming of age. How do you think Australia will go in the 2018 World Cup? Australia ustralia has a good chance if they get a good result against France in their first game and Denmark in their second, then beat Peru. Australia has an experienced coach who took the Netherlands to the World Cup in 2010 so he will be good for us. Who is your favourite player and why? Cristiano Ronaldo onaldo – because he’s cute and currently the best player in the world! How did you get interested in football? Myy husband loves the football and follows EPL matches. I had to go along with it and eventually grew to understand and love the game myself. Which team do you think will win this year? I think Brazil will win because they play one of the most entertaining footy games around. They have individual players who are highly skilled. Brazil is hurting from their last World Cup loss when they were beaten in their home country. They’ll hey’ll want to show they’re still the best – they are the only team that has won five World Cups and will be keen to gain top spot again.

Socceroos fancy fast action By Steve Larkin The Socceroos believe their superior fitness and Peru’s propensity for attack will play into their hands in their defining World Cup fixture in Russia. Australia must beat Peru and rely on France to defeat Denmark to have a chance of advancing to the knockout phase of the showpiece tournament. Peru has suffered consecutive losses and can’t get beyond the group stage. But it has pledged to attack the Australians with its customary up-tempo style when they meet in Sochi. Australian defender Josh Risdon said that sort of approach would suit the Socceroos just fine. “You have seen when the game opened up against Denmark, we did very well and we created a lot of chances,” he said. “And in terms of the high tempo, we’re fit as a side and I’m sure we can match them all day in fitness. “They are world class … [but] I think we can really damage them going forward.” Should Australia and France win their respective final group games, the Socceroos and Denmark will be locked on four points each. Goal difference, goals scored, then disciplinary records and possibly the drawing of lots would then determine which nation joins France in the knockout stage. The French are guaranteed of progressing regardless of the outcome of their game against Denmark, which will be staged at the same time as Australia’s match. But Socceroos defender Aziz Behich said

Josh Risdon says the up-tempo style of Peru will suit the Socceroos. (AAP Image/Dean Lewins)

there was scant chance of the French easing up against the Danes. “As footballers, we’re all competitors and we all want to win every game,” Behich said. “They maybe have nothing to play for, but I’m pretty sure they want to top the group.”

Behich said it was vital the Australians didn’t get distracted by Tuesday’s permutations. “We have just got to focus on ourselves,” he said. “We still have to do our job and make sure that we beat Peru.

“I have got a lot of belief that France will do the job against Denmark, but we have got to focus on ourselves because we have got a tough task ahead.” – AAP

French hatch has plenty of shine By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

MODEL RANGE MODEL RANGE

The Citroen C3 may be light-on in variants – the new French compact comes to market in a single version, the Shine – but it has striking looks, cost savings and capacity to match the buyer’s own personality. With a skinny sticker price of $23,490, plus on-roads, the hatch is straight from the “Do you want fries with that?” design school – as a main course, it may seem meagre, but it comes with an optional “sides” menu of lip-smacking proportions. For starters there are 33 exterior colour combinations. Standard segment-first safety features on the all-new C3 include traffic sign speed recognition and recommendation, plus lane departure warning.

Citroen C3 Shine automatic $23,490 Note: This price does not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Citroen dealer for drive-away prices.

Safety

The C3’s standard lane departure warning helps guard against driver inattention at speeds above 65km/h, giving audible and visual warnings if the car crosses a lane marker line without the indicator being used. Driver attention alert tells drivers when it is time to take a break, the system activating after two hours of uninterrupted driving at speeds above 70km/h, then on the hour.

Styling

The design has taken on a new look without ignoring features that made its predecessor so popular. Front on, the C3 fits with its robust intent, the signature twin chevron taking pride of place flanked by a two-tier front light set-up reinforcing bonnet height. A floating roofline is enhanced by black windscreen pillars, body surfaces extending downwards over large-diameter wheels. At the rear, muscular wings give a creature-of-prey appearance. The car as a whole lends itself to customisation, including no-cost options such as 17-inch diamond cut black alloy wheels, body-coloured roof and white or red two-tone roof.

Interior

The dashboard design features trim that adds a feel of width to the cabin. Buyers have a choice of finishes – paint, textile or TEP lining, ordered with or without overstitching.

Driving

Striking looks are only the beginning for the new Citroen C3 hatch. (Supplied)

Infotainment

The new C3 Shine presents the world premiere of Citroen ConnectedCAM, a fully-integrated HD camera system that films on-road experiences for immediate sharing on social media. A 7-inch touchscreen gives access to a range of safety, phone and media functions including Apple CarPlay and mirror screen, which duplicates the driver’s smartphone screen on the central display.

Engines / transmissions

The C3’s 81 kW version of the turbocharged 1.2-litre PureTech e-THP engine is the same three-cylinder unit found in a variety of vehicles. Mated with an electronically-controlled, six-speed automatic gearbox, gear changes are 40 per cent faster than those of previous gearboxes. Higher gear ratios maintain start-up performance and decrease engine speed at higher vehicle speeds.

Citroen claims combined urban/highway fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres and carbon dioxide emissions as low as 110 g per kilometre. The test car used a not-so-optimistic 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway. The C3 rides out minor road surface blemishes with smooth confidence, but the suspension does let occupants know of any major pot holes. Steering is light but direct and body roll not an annoyance. Disc brakes do the job well.

Summing up

The Citroen C3 Shine is a striking looking well-specified small car at a keen price, laying down a creative challenge for buyers to stamp their own seal on the vehicle with a shopping list of options. Go for it!
