Off to see the wizard A journey with Dorothy and her friends down the yellow brick road awaits these school holidays. Watergardens Town Centre is bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s much-loved production of The Wizard of Oz to life with a glittering costume display from the Australian production. Watergardens senior marketing manager Julie Watson said there were a number of exciting outfits on display. “We’ve got the Tin Man’s shiny metal suit and Dorothy’s sparkling ruby slippers,” Ms Watson said. While the costumes are the main attraction, Ms Watson said there will also be Wizard of Oz activities. “This costume exhibition will run alongside other school holiday activities, including a Wizard of Oz meet and greet where kids and parents can meet Dorothy and the Tin Man,” Ms Watson said. “We’ll also have a Wizard of Oz craft village.” Activities will run from 11am to 2pm daily during the school holidays. The costumes are on display until Sunday, July 22 during normal trading hours. Details: www.facebook.com/ watergardenstowncentre ABIGAIL, 7

Melton’s rubbish revamp By Esther Lauaki Melton council will fund a $7.7 million upgrade of the municipality’s recycling facility as it nears capacity. A master plan for the Melton Recycling Facility, including a business case, was adopted at last week’s meeting, with councillors voting that funding for the upgrade be factored into the next two budgets, starting with 2019-2020. A 2017 report revealed that the Ferris Road facility would reach its maximum capacity

within the next three years and required an overhaul in the way it is operated. Council operations manager Les Stokes said that it cost the council about $5.1 million a year to run the facility. “The continued operation of the site in this manner would result in a facility that is unable to meet the needs of the community and an increased level of dissatisfaction from customers caused by delays, increased cost and poor perception of the operating practices,” Mr Stokes said.

He said the facility’s current operatingcapacity could not cope with population growth. Among a number of proposed improvements is the construction of a large automated transfer station. Mr Stokes said the council could potentially save about $1 million in operating costs by separating the operation of the resale and recycling component from the waste transfer station component. “There are groups that specialise in running these facilities with the aim of providing not

only a lower operating cost but to improve social, economic and environmental outcomes,” he said. Councillor Sophie Ramsey said that the unanimous support by councillors for the master plan and future funding commitment reflected the need for the recycling facility upgrade. “It’s been identified by every councillor here how important the upgrade to the recycling facility is … it’s essential to our existence,” she said.

Garden thieves leave bitter taste By Esther Lauaki Botanists and volunteers have expressed their disappointment for the entire community after thieves stole about 30 plants from Melton Botanic Garden last week. A variety of Mediterranean and southern African plants were uprooted from the gardens overnight last Tuesday. It’s the latest in a spate of thefts and vandalism at the gardens in recent months. Friends of Melton Botanic Garden president John Bentley said the whole community loses out when such incidents occur.

“We’ve had a bit of vandalism whether it be of signage or graffiti … the council does a wonderful job of cleaning it up so that we can just get on with our work,” Mr Bentley said. “People are really disappointed and especially because it’s been the work of volunteers that has been ruined. “The difficulty is that when the plants are taken like this, they’re unlikely to survive or they grow very big and out of control in someone’s garden. “It’s disappointing that someone’s had to stoop to that instead of just going and buying their own plants.”

He encouraged the public to keep a lookout for any suspicious activity around the garden. “If you see anyone stealing plants from Melton Botanic Garden please let the police, council and the friends group know,” Mr Bentley said. “We attract visitors and admirers from all over and it’s surprising that we’ve received so much support from those people after the most recent theft.” Mr Bentley said police were investigating. Volunteers are always needed and are welcome to help maintain the gardens. Details: bit.ly/2lESjQY

Year 10 media studies students at Taylors Lakes Secondary College are celebrating the completion of a project with a difference. As part of their major assignment, the class had to create a unique production, and this year’s students took a new approach. “Generally we do a film, but this time we wanted to play around with a children’s storybook,” teacher Jessica Skogstad said. “We spoke with a local special school and asked about the kind of things they look for and tried to stick with those.

“It’s [the book] based around concepts like independence, sharing and self discovery. “We worked on it all semester and it’s now in pre-sale.” Year 10 student Elizabeth Cocolaras came up with the story concept. “This particular book is about an apple wanting to go on an adventure and be independent, so he leaves his bowl and all his fruit and family and explores the world,” Ms Cocolaras said. “I came up with the idea pretty quickly and it went from there. It was really

good to experience working with new people and finding out their talents.” Student Aaron Bahmondos worked on illustations for the book. ■ “I’m a fan of Adult Swim, so I got to take inspiration from some of my favourite shows like Rick and Morty, which was really cool,” he said. The book is still in pre-sale and can be bought from the school. Details: www.tlsc.vic.edu.au

Wildlife rescuers and animal lovers have been left broken-hearted after their efforts to save Bernie the koala, rescued from an out of control burn-off in Buninyong, came to a tragic end. The community threw its support behind a fundraising campaign to help rehabilitate Bernie after Buninyong CFA volunteers saved him three weeks ago. Wala Animal Sanctuary manager Karen Pohlner, who runs a rescue shelter from her Smythes Creek home, reported with “the heaviest of hearts” on Sunday night that Bernie did not survive. Ms Pohlner named Bernie and had been providing him burns treatment since June 4. “We fought so hard to help him live and he valiantly fought hard to stay but unfortunately the battle was lost,” she said. “Apart from physical burns, native wildlife suffer smoke inhalation from being caught in fires. We did our utmost to help Bernie fight infection, both in his burnt feet and his lungs, with daily medications and bandage changes. Our worst fears were realised a couple of days ago when Bernie took a turn for the worst.” Ms Pohlner said volunteers laid him to rest under a eucalyptus tree. An estimated 200 animals are in her care at the sanctuary, where she and other volunteers work to rehabilitate and return injured animals to nature. She said the sanctuary often received calls to attend to animals caught in burn-offs that get out of control. Esther Lauaki

Life just got a whole lot easier for book lovers who live in Atherstone estate and Melton South. Melton council, in partnership with Lendlease Communities, has set up a library access point at the Bridge Road Children’s and Community Centre so resident readers can select, collect, borrow and return books. Self-service library lockers fitted with screens enable residents to collect library items they have placed on hold without needing to travel to the Melton or Caroline Springs branches.

Books, magazines, audiobooks and DVDs can all be borrowed. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the process was user-friendly, making borrowing books easier for everyone living in, or near, Atherstone estate. “Simply join the library, order your items online and collect – it’s easy,” Cr Turner said. Lendlease Communities managing director Matthew Wallace said he was excited the library project was up and running. Esther Lauaki

New beginning for maternity unit By Esther Lauaki More women in Bacchus Marsh will be able to give birth closer to home with the revamp of maternity services at Djerriwarrh Health Services now complete. The $1.59 million expansion and refurbishment of Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital increased the number of post-delivery maternity beds from 11 to 15, giving the hospital the capacity to cater for up to 1200 births a year. It also includes better nurse workstations, a new three-bay nursery and upgraded delivery suites to improve care and comfort for mothers and babies. The upgrade was part of an overhaul to provide safer and better care in birthing services in the wake of revelations there had been 11 cases of potentially avoidable newborn and stillborn deaths at the hospital between 2001 and 2014. Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator John Ballard said the upgrade was another “vote of confidence in Djerriwarrh Health Services and its future”. “The new maternity unit will equip the hospital and its staff to better meet and deliver outstanding levels of care for all patients, residents and clients,” Dr Ballard said at last Wednesday’s opening. Chief executive Belinda Scott said the refurbishment was a significant boost for the Health Service, and the wider communities of Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Caroline Springs. “It’s energising to step into this rejuvenated building, which sets up the health service for the long term,” Ms Scott said. She said investment by the state government, along with a generous donation from the local ladies auxiliary, would allow the hospital to

substantially upgrade and expand its level of patient care. Health Minister Jill Hennessy officially opened the unit and said the aim was to deliver the best possible care in the best facilities.

“We’re working hard so that mums in Bacchus Marsh can feel confident they are accessing the safest and highest quality birthing services, right here,” Ms Hennessy said.

Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital is also undergoing a $9 million expansion, building two extra operating theatres and refurbishing the existing theatre with the latest technology and equipment.

Caravan park bid hits roadblock By Esther Lauaki

Damon catches netball fever Damon Mariluch is taking his netball career all the way. The 19-year-old, from Kurunjang, has been selected to play for Australia in the under-20s men’s team at the AMMNA Trans-Tasman Cup in Adelaide in October. Mariluch has been playing top level netball for five years but said it started “pretty casually”. “I got into it about five years ago when my friends were playing at the Melton indoor sports stadium and they needed an extra player,” he said. “I filled in and really enjoyed it.” He went on to play for the mixed national teams in 2016 and 2017 and will now take the court at goal keeper in the men’s competition this year. “I love the camaraderie and you find a real bond on and off the court,” Mariluch said. “Of course I cop a lot of teasing and jokes because I play netball but I have a good sense of humour, I shrug it off.” His seven-day-a-week sports schedule includes training, playing football and coaching netball at Melton Centrals. Mariluch is hoping for sponsorship to raise the $2000 to get him to Adelaide, to training camps in Canberra in August and pay for accommodation. To donate: 0449 584 092

About 100 Diggers Rest residents made their objections to a proposed caravan park heard at a community meeting last week. Residents packed out the community planning meeting last Tuesday (June 26), hosted by Diggers Rest Residents Association and Melton council, which was to inform residents about current planning applications before the council. Despite a number of applications on the agenda, the proposed 50 site camping and caravan park at 1376-1432 Old Calder Highway dominated discussions. Some residents declared that a tourist park was not appropriate for the entry of the township. Some residents said they instead supported a proposal, tabled at the council earlier this year, for a $30 million redevelopment of the nearby derelict Diggers Rest Hotel, including a boutique hotel, public bar and restaurant, distillery and function space. Melton council confirmed that more than 100 submissions had been received regarding the proposed caravan park and the application would be considered at a meeting in coming months. The applicant, Dean Slaviero, last month told Star Weekly that his vision was to attract tourism to the town. “My dad’s owned the property for over 30 years,” Mr Slaviero said. “We’re looking to improve the town and provide better services to this growing town.” He said that his idea for the site would eventually include refurbishing a W-Class tram and converting it into a burger cafe, a community garden and a boardwalk lined with machinery as a tourist attraction.

Council budgets big on building By Esther Lauaki Major infrastructure projects are at the top of the agenda for Melton and Moorabool councils in their 2018-19 budgets. Melton council has committed nearly $80 million to capital works Among the big-ticket items are $25 million on recreational facilities, including $900,000 on a female changeroom upgrade program; $2.9 million on the design and construction of City Vista sports ovals, tennis and netball courts and pavilion; and $2.7 million on the

completion of the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre redevelopment and construction of a sub-regional tennis facility. Another $17 million has been earmarked for roads. The most significant of those include $915,000 for the duplication of Hume Drive, $4.78 million for the Westwood Drive bridge, $3.151 million towards pedestrian level crossing upgrades at Hopkins, Troups, Leakes, Paynes, Mt Cottrell and Ferris roads, and $2.23 million on sealed-road resurfacing. Rate increases across Melton will be capped at 2.25 per cent in line with the state-imposed

Moorabool council has budgeted $20 million for capital works. Funds allocated for the widening of Ormond Road in Springbank total about $600,000, while widening of Werribee Vale Road at Maddingley will come in at nearly $500,000. The state government contributed $374,202 and $325,000 respectively to these two projects. Moorabool rates will increase by 2.11 per cent, below the state-imposed cap of 2.25 per cent, due to an accounting error in the 2017-18 rate calculation.

limit, with council expecting to collect about $134 million in the next financial year. Melton mayor Bob Turner said community feedback was integral to ensuring community needs were met in the coming financial year. “It’s very exciting to map out all the wonderful things we hope to achieve next year, through the budget,” Cr Turner said. “We have a significant capital works budget, which shows council is committed to continuously improving the municipality for our residents to ensure the city is the best place to live, work and play.”

They’re all four fun Fancy a bit of four-wheel driving with a touch of adventure? Citywest 4x4 Club is recruiting new members interested in exploring Victoria’s beautiful off-roading spots. The president of the Melton West club, David Goodes said that four-wheeling opened up a “new world” when he toured the likes of Wombat State Forest, the Pyrenees and the Victorian high country. Mr Goodes , who has been involved with the club for 12 of its 15 years, said a main aim was to change negative perceptions. “People sometimes think that we’re bush bashers driving through forests – but that’s not the case,” he said. “The club was established to provide members with the opportunity to drive through all those areas that, by heritage and by law, are available for four-wheel driving and associated leisure activities.

“We wanted people to have an opportunity to gain experience and expertise in the use of four-wheel drive vehicles, while also ensuring that road safety, the preservation of the environment and natural resources and the safety of the public are understood and respected.” The club has 40 members, ranging from those in their late 20s through to retirees, Mr Goodes said. Electricity the surprising winner for eco heating

Did you know that gas isn’t as price competitive against electricity as it used to be? Kate Leslie, an energy and water analyst from not-for-profit Alternative Technology Association, reports that this is now a reality. “If you rely on gas for heating but you also have a reverse-cycle air-conditioner, think twice before flicking the switch on the gas appliance,” Ms Leslie says. “Using a reversecycle air-conditioner to heat your home could lower your bills.” Harvey Norman Electrical has Panasonic models of reverse-cycle air-conditioners that will not only save households energy but also support better health, via Panasonic’s nanoe-G air purification system. Simon Day, franchisee of Harvey Norman Electrical, says people are switching on in droves to Panasonic’s advances in the airconditioning and heating market. “As people are learning of the advantages electric heating has compared to gas, they’re coming in to find the right model for their home,” Mr Day says.

Good questions to ask prior to purchase: 1. Which air-conditioner best suits my home’s layout? Consider factors such as insulation, windows and number of rooms requiring heating or cooling.

“One of our popular models is the Panasonic 8.0kW Aero Series Econavi, which comes with the nanoe-G system.

This is a benefit for asthma, allergy or hay fever sufferers because it eliminates micro-organisms – actually removing 99 per cent of airborne bacteria, viruses and mould. And the nanoe-G system even works when the air-con is off. “And right now, customers get a bonus $200 EFTPOS card via redemption when a Panasonic model is purchased. Other Panasonic models are also available.” What else makes Panasonic a good choice for households? When Melbourne’s heat hits hard, a Panasonic reverse-cycle air-conditioner delivers clean, comfortable cooling. The Mild Dry Cooling feature, designed to maintain the level of air moisture in a room, reduces unwanted effects such as dry eyes, skin, mouth and throat. “This is especially useful,” explains Mr Day, “when the air-conditioner is left on overnight during sleep time.” Panasonic’s iAUTO-X technology automatically adjusts fan speed to room temperature, while Econavi sensors adjust cooling power for reduced energy usage. For more information, go to harveynorman.com.au

2. Is the air-conditioner’s kW size the right capacity? This could save heaps of money in the long run. 3. How does it rate on energy efficiency? 4. Will Harvey Norman install your system? Yes – a licensed technician is essential for safety.

Overall, we feel confident that this is a fair and equitable budget that strives to ensure the timely delivery of infrastructure, programs and services for our community.

It’s with great pride that I can advise that Council’s 2018/19 Budget was adopted at the Ordinary Meeting of Council last Monday 25 June.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered Council’s #meltoncitymuchmore photography competition, held on Facebook and Instagram over the past month.

Some great projects that I have advocated for were approved as part of the budget process.

We received over 200 outstanding entries, and it’s a pleasure to congratulate Rebecca Heaton (first prize), for her stunning photograph of the kangaroos at Eynesbury; Nicole Costello (second prize), for her beautiful floral image at the Melton Botanic Gardens; and Adrian Borg (third prize), for his outstanding aerial photo of the rail bridge over Melton Weir. $4.78 million for the completion of the long awaited Westwood Drive Road and Bridge project, and

$2.9 million for the design and construction of City Vista sporting ovals, tennis and netball courts, and pavilion.

Further funds were also allocated for the completion of Caroline Springs Leisure Centre and Sub-regional tennis facility; design and construction of Fraser Rise and Aintree Children’s and Community Centres; and stages one and two of the Lake Caroline and surrounds lighting project.

This is along with the reinstatement of the water fountain at the Caroline Springs front lake. Of course, these projects will be undertaken alongside all the other outstanding services, projects and programs that Council offers residents, to make our community an even better place to run a business, build a home and raise a family. As stated in my election pledge, I will continue to advocate on behalf of, and represent, the Cambridge Ward residents who placed their trust and faith in me to be their elected official. I pride myself on being the voice of that community; one who works tirelessly to ensure that the services and infrastructure are available to those who need them, and to achieve the best possible outcomes for our municipality. I welcome comments or feedback from residents who wish to contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

Deb’s desperate battle By Esther Lauaki Debra Nelson lives with an ultra-rare cancer you’ve probably never heard of. The Kurunjang woman has stage four metastatic leiomyosarcoma – a rare and aggressive form of cancer that attacks the body’s connective tissue. Doctors misdiagnosed Ms Nelson early on with conditions including irritable bowel, fructose intolerance and arthritis because she had severe abdominal pains. A correct diagnosis came in 2013 and the prognosis was not good. Her treatment has consisted of intensive radiation therapy and chemotherapy and, with few options available, her last hope could be a trial drug that costs tens of thousands of dollars a month. An online fundraising campaign was recently set up to help raise $100,000 towards treatment. Surgery in 2014 removed most of a tumour but not all of it. The cancer has since returned and has now invaded her liver. Ms Nelson knows she’s facing an uphill battle. “When they discovered it, it was at stage four and was at maximum aggressiveness and had spread to my lymph nodes, she said. “The average life expectancy for people with this kind of cancer is about five years and I’ve had it for four. “I’m doing my research and reading up on everything. “I don’t find much joy in anything these days because I am too busy trying to save my own life. To donate, go to: treat.rarecancers.org.au/ campaign/2061/helping-deb-nelson

Grant to protect health workers Frontline healthcare workers in Bacchus Marsh and Melton will have another line of defence from violence and abuse. Djerriwarrh Health Service has been granted $240,000 for a security upgrade at its Bacchus Marsh and Melton campuses as part of the statewide safety campaign assisting 46 hospitals and mental health facilities. Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said the grant would be used to install a mobile duress system. Ms Pulford said the latest round of funding from the Health Service Violence Prevention Fund would improve the safety of staff, patients and visitors. “This security upgrade at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton campuses will help improve the safety and peace of mind of people working at the two campuses, Ms Pulford said. She said it would also send a message that frontline health workers were valued and respected. “It’s never acceptable to attack or abuse our frontline health workers and that’s why the Labor government is giving our hospital and mental health facility staff the equipment, infrastructure and technology that keeps staff, patients and visitors safe, Mr Pulford said. The government recently announced tougher statutory minimum prison sentencing laws so anyone who attacks and injures an emergency worker would receive a custodial sentence. Esther Lauaki

Benjamin and Eric Zhang were winners at a chess tournament. (Dennis Manktelow)

Brothers check mates Eric and Benjamin Zhang love chess. The Taylors Lakes brothers, aged nine and seven, play each other three times a day, trying to claim bragging rights at home. Outside of the family home, they make formidable opponents – Eric and Benjamin won their respective age groups in the RJ Shield, a tournament held in Hoppers Crossing last month. “I’ve been playing for about two and a half years, but this was my first tournament win,” Eric said. “I won the under-10 division and got a gold medal. I love the game and the tactics – you always have to be thinking ahead.” Benjamin also took home a gold medal in the under-8 division.

“I was confident before we started and I was pleased with how I played,” he said. The win came at an opportune time for Benjamin, who took part in the state’s biggest chess tournament, the Victorian State Championships, at the weekend. “I’m a little bit nervous, but also excited about the opportunity,” he said. While Benjamin might be off to the state championships, Eric said he was still the champion at home. Eric said he’d love to be able to play more readily in Brimbank. “We have to travel to Caroline Springs and Melton to play in chess clubs,” he said. Tate Papworth

MY PLACE Sharon Murphy has a lot of love for the Moorabool community. She talks to Esther Lauaki about a project close to her heart. I reside within the shire and also volunteer for a number of local organisations.

and October to present to children. So all up we have raised approximately $18,000 in just on six months towards iPads – $12,000 worth of iPads [have] already been presented and distributed.

How long have you lived in the area?

What other hats do you wear?

I have lived in Ballan for eight years and resided in Bacchus Marsh prior to that for 23 years.

I am president of the Ballan Lions Club, the entertainment co-ordinator for Ballan Autumn Festival, chairperson and founder of Keeley’s Cause and I am also a qualified community welfare counsellor.

What are you passionate about? I am passionate about helping others less fortunate than myself. How did Keeley’s Cause come about? Keeley’s Cause came about about 11 months ago through my 13 year-old daughter Keeley who, through her own experiences with autism and having an intellectual disability, wanted to provide children with similar diagnosis with iPads. They help them with full-time learning in schools, interacting and communicating with peers. There is no government funding for iPads for children with special needs and not every school has the ability to provide these to enhance their educational prospects. Keeley’s Cause is a project of The Ballan Lions Club and from there we have grown. How much has been raised so far? So far we have raised funds to purchase 17 iPads, with further donations being received through iPad sponsorships from businesses/ community groups, chocolate fundraising, events and donations. We also have a further seven iPads on top of these travelling to New South Wales and Queensland in September

What would people be surprised to know about you? People may be surprised to know that I have two children with autism and I also care for my 84-year-old mother. What is the best thing about living in Moorabool? The best thing about living in Moorabool is definitely the people in the community of Moorabool, so warm, welcoming and proud members of their town. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? It would be to support more local business and community groups within the shire and encourage people to volunteer or assist local clubs and groups. Volunteering is a very rewarding opportunity to engage with the people and we need to get behind and support their projects, community organisations, sporting clubs and businesses to encourage their growth.

With a family-friendly floor plan and plenty of space outdoors, this property may be the one you’ve been waiting for. On a block of about 729 square metres in Kurunjang estate, the house has four bedrooms with built-in robes, the main with walk-in robe and en suite. The kitchen is smart and welcoming, with a practical design making good use of space, lots of cupboards and bench space, stainless-steel appliances and a step-in pantry. A living zone, dining space and rumpus complete the hub. Outside there is a covered decked area great for alfresco dining and plenty of lawn for the kids to kick a footy on. Includes ducted heating, split-systems and an alarm. The double garage has internal and rear access and there is an additional double garage out the back (complete with power), great for a boat, caravan or trailer and accessible by a side driveway.

The whole 1014-square metre block surrounding this great property has been beautifully landscaped. Within, there are all the extras that make a house a home, with a large carpeted front lounge room incorporating a gas fireplace with a timber surround and a bay window with plantation shutters. All four bedrooms are carpeted and a great size, including the main bedroom with a walk-in robe, bay window and a renovated en suite with a double-length frameless shower. Ducted heating warms all rooms. The kitchen and meals area has floating floorboards set against white gloss cabinetry. Walk through to the lounge room, with floating floors and two sets of exposed timber cafe-style doors and timber venetians which open to the fantastic pitched roofed pergola with fans. This four bedroom, two bathroom, two living zone property is set on a large block, has a timeless facade and is in a fantastic location. Those in the know say the Residential Growth Zone Schedule One (RGZ1) status afforded this address by council makes this a possible multi-storey or multi-residential development (STCA). Located opposite the train station, within walking distance of schools and shopping, there’s also Toolern Creek Reserve nearby with walking tracks to be enjoyed. Renovate, explore opportunities, rent-vest – whichever you choose, this property has all the hallmarks of a good investment.

Positioned on the ground floor, with a security intercom and a large courtyard, this property would make an ideal investment or first home due to its rental potential of $250-$260 per week and affordable price point. Neat-and-tidy and turn-key ready, find a corner-set kitchen with stainless-steel appliances, a good-sized carpeted lounge room with glass sliding door access to the courtyard, two carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes and a dual-access-style main bathroom. Together with a single carport on title and a split-system in the lounge, this one is going to be hard to beat for value.

SPORT Early lead just enough for Hillside to hold on for a win Hillside put in a dominant first half to set up a strong win over Oak Park on Saturday, keeping the Sharks inside the top four for another week. The Sharks were heavily favoured in the Essendon District Football League division one match-up and showed some of their best form early in the game to take a stranglehold on the contest. An even second half, and some wayward goalkicking ended in a 14.18 (102)8.10 (58) win for the Sharks. Hillside coach Steve Burns said while he would like to see his forwards kick a bit straighter, a strong win was always welcome. “We felt like we had control of the contest by about 10 minutes into the game, and we were able to shut the game down in the second half, which was pleasing,” Burns said. “We probably should have been 10 goals up at half time, missing some sitters we should have kicked, but I’m happy if we’re having 30 shots on goal because no matter the opposition we should be winning.

“Our backline functioned really well, and we won the midfield battle to give our forwards the chance. We’ll work on our conversion at training that’s for sure.” It was the youth of Hillside who drove the win and Western Jets-listed players David Fruscalzo and Josh Klaromenos provided plenty of run and class through the middle. While the Sharks kicked 5.1 in the first quarter, the inaccuracy crept into their game in the second term and they slotted 4.10 to lead by 44 at the long break. Oak Park neutralised the contest to a degree after half time, but could not make any significant inroads into the lead as Hillside took a comfortable win. The Sharks can further solidify their place in the top four when they take on fifth-placed Taylors Lakes in a huge game this weekend. “It’s a massive game in the context of the season, and when you throw in the local rivalry it’s going to be a big day,” Burns said.

“We’re in front at the moment, so if we want to play finals then we need to win next week, it’s absolutely vital. “In this division, anyone can beat anyone on any given day, that’s been proven time and again so you’ve got to be on your game.” In division 2, Burnside Heights overcame a diabolical second quarter to run over the top of Roxborough Park. While the game was an arm wrestle to begin with, a nine-goal second term from the visiting Magpies broke the game open and the Bears faced a 40-point deficit at the long break. From there the Bears managed to tighten up their defence, conceding just two more goals for the rest of the game, and roared back into the contest via four goals from Josh Covelli. Burnside Heights took the lead in the final quarter, and held on for a 13.8 (86)- 12.11 (83) win. Ewen McRae

Brawl fall-out for Devils By Ewen McRae and David Brehaut Darley Football Club has suspended its president and banned three supporters in the wake of an on-field brawl that broke out after the final siren of the senior match between the Devils and North Ballarat City at Darley Park on Saturday. A Darley executive committee emergency meeting indefinitely stood down club president Ray Newton for a “lack of judgment” in dealing with the supporters, who were deemed responsible for initiating and escalating the incident. None of the banned supporters were club members. Ballarat Football League is investigating the fracas in which supporters were reportedly injured. Darley won the game 11.17 (83)-11.12 (78) to move up to third on the table, but the win was overshadowed by events following the final siren in which spectators allegedly approached the two field umpires as they were leaving the ground and hurled verbal abuse at them. League operations manager Shane Anwyl confirmed the league would be making formal inquiries with both clubs to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and also confirmed it had obtained a recording of the incident that would be used in its investigations. Darley secretary Lorissa Edwards said in a statement on the club’s Facebook page on Saturday night the incident had not involved North Ballarat City players or supporters. A further club statement to media on Sunday declared the club was “disturbed” by the incident as “a proud community based club which takes pride in providing a welcoming and all-inclusive environment”. The statement said the club had found no senior players or coaching staff were involved, “other than to try and break up the gathering” and that the Darley players had moved off the field when instructed. The incident put a dampener on an otherwise impressive day for Darley. It kept the visitors scoreless in the first term before withstanding a late fightback to grab the win. Jacob Zeestraten kicked two goals and was a strong player across the game, while Shane Page also produced a solid display. The result means Darley has leap-frogged North Ballarat City into third place and has a chance to draw level on points with East Point this weekend. Elsewhere, a dominant 10-goal haul to Dylan Conway was the highlight of a huge 104-point win for Melton South over Ballarat. It was the 38 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 3, 2018

A 14-goal final quarter from Riddell was the exclamation point on their thumping win over Rockbank at the weekend, keeping the visitors scoreless after quarter time. Haydn Ross kicked eight goals, and Matt Panuccio bagged six as Riddell stormed to a 38.16 (244)-2.1 (13) win. The percentage boost lifted them to third on the ladder. Elsewhere, six goals to Cameron McCabe helped Diggers Rest to a comfortable win over Melton Centrals. Diggers were in control for much of the day, holding a three-goal lead into the first break. A scoreless third quarter from the home side broke the game open and the Burras stretched away to win 15.8 (98)-6.9 (45).

A Melton South football coach has been sacked after getting into a brawl with several players from his own team. The Panthers sacked their under18.5s coach after he was involved in an altercation with one of his players during a game against Ballarat on Saturday. Melton South senior coach Heath Pritchard said the junior coach was dismissed on the spot. He said the incident occurred after the Melton South player involved and a Ballarat opponent were shown red cards and ordered from the field in the first quarter. Mr Pritchard said there was a verbal clash between the coach and his player, followed by a physical altercation. A new coach has been appointed and the club is investigating the incident.

Darley’s Jacob Zeestraten gets a kick away despite pressure from behind in Saturday’s win.

Melton’s division 2 men’s side fell to a hard-fought loss to Camberwell in Big V basketball action on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds matched the Dragons in most stats categories but fell short on the scoreboard, 73-65. Mangar Manyang (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Graham Dexter (13 points, 12 rebounds) were the standout players for Melton, but Camberwell’s whole-team performance was enough for the Dragons to get the win.

Panthers’ first win of the season. Conway was unstoppable for the Panthers, leading strongly, marking well and finishing clinically all day as the home side shot out of the blocks and was never headed.

The Panthers kicked 10 goals in the opening quarter and piled on the goals across the day to finish 27.14 (176)-11.6 (72) victors.

Strikers rue late fade out By Ewen McRae Westside Strikers survived a late comeback from Gisborne in their state league 5 top of the table clash on Saturday, coughing up three late goals in a tense draw. While the Strikers maintained their unbeaten record for the season, they looked like taking the full points for much of the game as they controlled large portions of possession and were clinically efficient up front. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said it was dissapointing to concede three times in a match, after only letting through four goals in the 12 games of the season previously. “We were pretty disappointed to be 3-0 with 15 minutes or so to go and not take the full points,” Raniolo said. “We were pretty fired up with a top of the table game, and we knew it was going to be a tough game so we started well and controlled most of the game and stopped them from having a shot so that was pleasing. A shame we let ourselves down at the end of the game.” Westside started the game like a team yet to drop a game, giving themselves early opportunities to score before Jordan Borg was able to head home the opener on the far post from a corner in the ninth minute. Both teams had periods of dominance through the rest of the opening half, but neither side was able to find the back of the net as the home side took their lead into the break. Westside again started well in the second half, with Borg getting his second in the 50th minute after a defensive error from Gisborne,

and seemingly sealing the win with a 68th minute strike to complete his hat-trick. From there the game began to turn in Gisborne’s favour, with some substitutions, tactical shifts, and an attacking mindset reaping rewards. Jake McIntyre opened the scoring for the visitors after some good build-up play in the 78th minute, and soon after it was 3-2 as Charles Eastwood got on the scoresheet. Gisborne closed down the space for the Strikers defenders in the closing stages, and were able to force some mistakes, and when McIntyre bagged his second in the 89th minute it was the visitors who looked the better side. Raniolo said his side was keeping perspective despite the result. “Look we’re still on top, still five points ahead of Gisborne, and still undefeated so that’s a positive for us,” he said. “It would have been nice to be eight points ahead, but it’s still in our hands for the championship. “It’s going to be a hard year, and we know it will be very hard to go a whole year undefeated, so the boys just have to keep going, forget about this one and get ourselves up for the next one.” Elsewhere, Melton Phoenix missed a chance to grab a win as they conceded a late penalty in their clash with West Point and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

LUKE DELEO HARVEY NORMAN ELECTRICAL PROPRIETOR Which team do you support? Germany – because they’ve always been among the best technical tacticians. They smashed Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, 7-1, one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. How do you think Australia will go in the 2018 World Cup? They have a tough gig, being in the strongest group. A draw with Denmark and a victory against Peru would put Australia in for a good chance for the second round. That would be a good result. Who is your favourite player and why? Zinedine Zidane, who once played for France. He has fantastic skills on the ball – the way he glides, with the ball “sticking to his feet” is special. He was France’s best player when they lifted the Cup in 1998. How did you get interested in football? I grew up watching football with my family. In the English Premier League, I support Manchester United and I’ve watched every World Cup since 1994. I believe it’s the best sporting event in the world. Which team do you think will win this year? I think the best four squads with a chance are Brazil, Germany, France and Spain. My hunch is that Spain will win because, after winning in 2010 and the Euro in 2012, they had a poor run in 2014. Now they’re hungry and back with strength. They have new players and have played great football in the qualifiers and Friendlies.

Croatia to face World Cup host By Mark Gleeson Croatia has edged Denmark in penalty kicks to set up a quarter-final meeting with host nation Russia at the World Cup. Croatia came back after conceding in the opening minute to earn a World Cup quarter-final berth after edging Denmark 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the two sides drew 1-1 in the round of 16 match. They could have wrapped up the result five minutes from the end of extra time, but Luka Modric had his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel. The Croatia captain returned to bravely take one of the post-match kicks as goalkeeper Danijel Subasic saved three of Denmark’s efforts to set up a quarter-final meeting with Russia on Saturday. It was Modric’s sublime pass that put Ante Rebic through on goal before being brought down by Mathias Jorgensen, offering Croatia a chance to win just before the lottery of the shoot-out. But Schmeichel made a smart save to keep the 1-1 stalemate intact. Two chaotic goals in the opening four minutes made for a rollicking start at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. That proved a false dawn as the spectacle faded, with both sides choosing caution as their priority in chasing a rare chance to reach the last eight at a World Cup. Jorgensen took all of 57 seconds to breach the

Croatia defence at the end of a long throw-in by Jonas Knudsen, stabbing at the ball with his left foot as he took it off teammate Thomas Delaney. Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic got a hand to Jorgensen’s toe-poke, but deflected the ball across his own line. There was an element of comedy to the fourth-minute equaliser for Mario Mandzukic as Denmark’s early advantage quickly disappeared. A kick across the Danish defence was firmly hit away by Henrik Dalsgaard but straight into the face of teammate Andreas Christensen, creating a pinball effect that saw the ball fall for Mandzukic, who then expertly turned it into the net from close range. The anticipated influence of Christian Eriksen for the Danes and Croatia’s Modric held out hopes of more mouthwatering action, but their craft was only evident in patches. Eriksen did shave the top of the woodwork just before half-time with a speculative effort while, at the other end, Ivan Rakitic forced a smart save from Schmeichel. After the interval, the chances were even more sparse, although Croatia did up the tempo towards the end of regulation time, only to run into a resolute Denmark defence. In extra time, Knudsen’s long throws proved the most dangerous attacking weapon, but eventually it was penalties that delivered a winner. – AAP
