Soccer kids strike out More than 200 children have been turned away from a Caroline Springs soccer club in the past two years because requests for upgraded training grounds have been knocked back by Melton council, the club says. Westside Strikers Football Club has been training at the Brookside Recreation Reserve for the past four years, sharing the grounds with the nearby primary school, Australian Rules football clubs, cricket clubs and another soccer club. With the club’s number of players growing to 400, president Sam Raniolo says it has outgrown the facilities and grounds, which are dotted with potholes, patchy grass and synthetic turf. The club was advised Melton council would resurface the grounds, Mr Raniolo said, but it was later decided council’s maintenance officers would patch up the potholes weekly. Melton community services acting manager Matthew Wilson said the council spent about $500,000 three years ago to extend the original building at the reserve, which included providing female-friendly “amenities”. Mr Wilson said the council was investigating the possibility of using change facilities at the adjacent secondary school for sporting use. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Landfill faces big switch By Sumeyya Ilanbey Plans to divert more than 150,000 tonnes of waste a year from a Bacchus Marsh landfill and generate enough renewable energy to power up to 15,000 homes have been unveiled. A waste-to-energy facility is being planned for Maddingley Brown Coal’s landfill. It will be a joint venture between iGas and Maddingley Brown Coal, which are in the process of applying to Moorabool council and the Environment Protection Authority for approval. Once built, the facility will extract methane from the landfill site, convert it to electricity, and then send it to the grid.
H A L F
The state government last month awarded $500,000 for the project from its Resource Recovery Infrastructure Fund. Once approval is obtained, construction is expected to start early next year and the facility to be operational be mid-2020. Maddingley Brown Coal has been operating as a commercial landfill since 1978, accepting waste such as timber and plastic film. iGas commercial manager Dylan Nichols is confident approval will be granted, saying the project was being designed to meet EPA standards and emission targets. “From a sustainability point-of-view, it’s a very good news story,” Mr Nichols told Star Weekly. “We’re not only diverting waste from
Y E A R L Y
landfill, [we’re] also reducing the reliance on fossil fuel. Electricity is [currently] produced by burnt coal, which isn’t great for the environment. And we’re bringing in new jobs, and energy generation to a region that will have issues with dedicated, reliable energy going forward.” Fifteen permanent jobs will be created once the facility is built, according to Mr Nichols. Maddingley Brown Coal waste strategist David Maltby said it was an exciting project. “[iGas] has technology and experience in the waste sector that aligns with the goals that MBC has to divert more waste from landfill and reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal,” he said.

EPA assessments director Tim Eaton said the authority had not yet received an application. “Depending on the specifics of the project it may require a works approval from EPA for the construction of the plant and an EPA licence for its operation,” Mr Eaton said. The state government recently commissioned a report that discussed the merits of waste-to-energy facilities following community backlash about the approved expansion of the Ravenhall landfill. The report found there was “broad support” for waste-to-energy as an alternative to landfill, but the public had concerns about the technology and the risks it might pose.

Moorabool faces a feline curfew By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Moorabool cat curfew is on the cards. Moorabool councillors approved a draft domestic animal management plan, under which a cat curfew feasibility study will be undertaken in the 2019-20 financial year, at last Wednesday’s council meeting. As part of the plan, Moorabool council plans to increase cat and dog registration levels; minimise the number of dog attacks; increase the rate of desexed cats; and review dog off-lead parks.
Council growth and development manager Satwinder Sandhu said the feasibility study assessing cat curfews would be done in consultation with the community. “Exact details of any proposed order will not be known until we undertake a thorough feasibility study,” Mr Sandhu said. “An example of a confinement order may include cat owners needing to ensure that their cats are confined to their properties between sunset and sunrise or 24 hours a day.” In their report presented at last week’s meeting, council officers said the issue of
introducing cat curfews was raised during the discussion on local laws last year. Officers also noted in the report that council resources would also need to be reviewed if a cat curfew was introduced. Moorabool council undertook surveys during the preparation of the draft domestic animal management plan, with the top three priorities identified by the community as promoting responsible pet ownership; minimising the risk of dog attacks on people and animals; and reviewing the number of animals permitted on properties.
In the 12 months to April, 2018, Moorabool council impounded 324 cats. Eight were returned to their owners, 183 were adopted and 133 euthanased. Council impounded 313 dogs, of which 216 were returned to their owner, 67 adopted and 30 euthanased. Mr Sandhu said the community safety team received 60 complaints about alleged dog attacks for the year. There were 6103 registered dogs, and 1532 registered cats in the shire in that period. Council recorded 1200 animal management requests and complaints in that time.

Melton council has scored $80,000 in state government funding to “unearth” the community’s hidden start-up talent. The Hot House Project, a three-phase program featuring more than 20 activities, including workshops and mentoring, will run throughout the year. Melton council will partner with Western BACE to deliver the project. Council engagement and advocacy manager Daniel Hogan said the money would help the council to support innovations which it otherwise might not have been able to do. “The project’s aim is to focus on unearthing the hidden start-up talent in the community,” Mr Hogan said.

The next big idea could be planted in our - Daniel Hogan backyard
’’
“It will help steer them on a path where their ideas can be nurtured, their networks developed, and their skills and knowledge improved to the point where they will be confident to take their ideas to the next level. “The next big idea could be planted in our backyard.” And that next big idea could come from Bask Aerospace founder David Skinner. Mr Skinner, based at Western BACE, is working on a SmartHanger prototype to “fully automate” the drone experience. Although drones have revolutionised several industries and is automated while in the air, Mr Skinner said users had to be present to fly and land the devices and change their batteries. He said SmartHanger would “close the loop” of automation, by flying, landing and changing the batteries of the drones without the user having to be nearby. “The idea of SmartHanger is to minimise the interaction [users] have with the drones … We come to their site, program the SmartHanger to do what the users want,” Mr Skinner says.
Local entrepreneur David Skinner with his drone. (Marco De Luca)
Mr Skinner began developing the idea for the SmartHanger more than a year ago and said the support for startups at Western BACE had been phenomenal. “Along the way, it can be a journey for small organisations, small start-ups,” he said. “You can feel a bit lonely, feel separated and
all of the onus to survive in the business world is on you.” Hot House Project activities will be a mixture of free and ticketed events. For details, visit the Venture Melton Facebook page.
Moorabool residents are being invited to have their say on council’s planned revised memorials policy. The current policy was adopted three years ago to assess and manage requests by people wanting to install memorials in public places. It’s open for comment in the next four weeks, with council set to adopt the revised policy at next month’s council meeting. In a report presented at last week’s council meeting, officers said the aim of the draft revised policy was to outline the types of memorials that will be considered; provide an application and approval process; and determine the responsibility for costs and maintenance. The draft policy includes a 10-step process for people wanting to erect memorials, including requests in writing being made to the chief executive officer and that memorials be relevant to the Moorabool community. The applicant will need to cover the cost of building and installing a memorial, with council covering “ordinary” maintenance costs. The draft policy covers requests to install park furniture, garden, art works, artefacts, trees, stone or etched pavings. It also includes indoor memorials and may also include donations to build memorial facilities. Temporary roadside memorials, such as floral tributes, are exempt from the policy. The draft policy can be found online, at Moorabool council’s customer service locations and the Ballan and Lerderderg libraries. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Guilty plea over girlfriend death A Diggers Rest man has admitted to murdering his 29-year-old girlfriend by bashing her to death. Shane Robertson faced Melbourne Magistrates Court last week and pleaded guilty to murdering former hairdresser Katherine Haley on March 9, 2017. The court heard that Robertson killed the mother-of-two by striking her five times to the head with a dumbbell bar on the night they broke up at their Diggers Rest home. Members of Ms Haley’s family were present at the hearing, including her father, sister, aunt and cousin. Several women cried during the proceedings.
Emergency services were called to a home in Fairfield Crescent after 11pm on March 9 last year. Ms Haley’s body was found fully clothed and she had suffered extensive head trauma. Robertson was charged with murder the next day. The pair had previously been described as a “very happy and a very lovely couple”. Police said Robertson became jealous after Ms Healy started a waitressing job following the birth of her second child. He didn’t like her working at a pub with men and believed she was cheating on him. Robertson made Ms Haley give him her
phone so he could look at her social media accounts and forced her to delete those accounts and to stop speaking to male co-workers, police said. In the weeks before the murder, Ms Haley told friends Robertson had become possessive and she was thinking of leaving him. Early on the morning of the murder, Robertson messaged Ms Haley: “Good night babe, had a good night with not only my best friend but my life partner. Here’s to our new beginning at life.” He messaged and called her repeatedly throughout the day before the pair went out for dinner and went home.
An argument broke out between the couple over Ms Haley using her mobile phone, court documents show, and she told Robertson that she no longer loved him. The court heard that following the murder, Robertson called his mother and said: “I kill her mum. I kill her. I didn’t mean it.” And later: “I’ve done it. I’ve bashed her brains in.” The court was told Robertson was at risk of self-harm and was having suicidal thoughts in custody. He was remanded to appear in the Supreme Court for a directions hearing. – The Age
Ask Charles Dickie about the “magical” Lerderderg State Park, and he’ll probably be able to tell you where the best spots are. After all, the Bacchus Marsh man has racked up 30 years as the park’s local ranger. And although the gorge is a favourite spot of his, there are many hidden gems. “I’ve become very attached to the [Lerderderg State] park over the past 30 years,” Mr Dickie says. “A walk in its gorge is a magical experience, and to think that you’re within an hour of Melbourne is hard to believe. “[There are walking tracks that range] from easy strolls to some lung-busting day walks.” Mr Dickie says one of the best parts of his job is his time on firefighting duty. Parks Victoria rangers work closely with other government agencies to help improve the public’s understanding of fires, and battle the blazes.
“[The park] is a great office and every day is different,” Mr Dickie says. “I’m very lucky to have a job that takes me out into our amazing parks and allows me to keep a role in keeping them healthy. “Although it can be very tough work, the camaraderie you experience on a fire-line is special and the work is extremely satisfying.” Mr Dickie has worked hard over the years to keep the park healthy and thriving. He syas one of the hardest things has been cleaning up the rubbish that’s been illegally dumped. The Lerderderg State Park is 20,000 hectares and home to more than 130 species of birds, 370 species of native plants, and a number of native animals, including the brushtail possum and koalas. New housing proposal slammed By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Coalition plan to fast-track 300,000 housing lots in outer growth suburbs has been described as a “recipe for long-term disaster” by one senior planning expert. Opposition leader Matthew Guy has pledged to fast-track the rezoning of all Precinct Structure Plans – about 300,000 extra housing lots – in Melton, Wyndham, Hume, Whittlesea, Mitchell, Casey and Cardinia, by 30 June 2020. Mr Guy said increasing land supply will drive down demand, thus making more houses
affordable. But planning expert and RMIT University Emeritus professor Michael Buxton said increasing land supply in outer growth areas was “the most unsatisfactory solution” to tackling housing affordability. He said the proposal did not address one of the most pressing issue of growth boundaries – poor infrastructure and services. “Governments internationally manage to deliver affordable housing types right across the city and metropolitan area, and that takes planning, economic policies, employment policies,” professor Buxton said.
“In a way … a quarter of a million new households on the fringe is giving up on the fundamental task, which is to provide a range of affordable housing [across Melbourne].” He said focusing on land supply will only create other problems, including adding further strain on overstretched areas. Planning, which involves varying housing types and land sizes, will be a much better solution to addressing the housing affordability crisis, Professor Buxton said. “Government should get away from trying to outbid from providing the worst housing
options in the fringe suburbs,” Professor Buxton said. “This is a bidding war to the race of the bottom to provide bad housing. “Putting another 250,000 on the fringe is a recipe for long-term disaster.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council wasn’t officially made aware of Mr Guy’s plans, but said it was struggling to cope with its current population boom and was playing catch up from past planning failures. He said while housing affordability was a problem, releasing thousands of new lots without infrastructure wasn’t the solution.
Job prospects boosted Mason Furniss needed a helping hand to find a job. He’d been unemployed for about a year, and actively looking for a job for two months, when he knocked on the door of SYC employment services division Job Prospect. Within the next few weeks he obtained his forklift licence, organised work gear, found an internship and landed a job at Nippon Express in Truganina. Mr Furniss, 20, said Job Prospect had been the key to his rapid progress. “Working gives me a sense of purpose in life,” Mr Furniss said. “Instead of waiting around after interviews, I’ve now gotten a job.” SYC is expanding and will offer its Disability Employment Services program at its Melton branch for people with disabilities. The services will be similar to those of Job Prospects, with the SYC team providing tailored help for people with disabilities,
advising and facilitating their journey into employment. SYC head of disability services Stephanie Brauer said the organisation was looking forward to helping people find jobs. “To now have the opportunity to support more Australians is fantastic … particularly sharing the specialist knowledge of our very experienced disability consultants, many of who have a personal connection to someone with a disability,” she said DES will run from Melton’s SYC offices at 45 Bakery Square, Melton. Outreach services will also be available. For more information, call 9036 5325. Sumeyya Ilanbey SYC consultant Caroline Simic, Mason Furniss and regional manager Nic Jarvis. (Joe Mastroianni)

Club mounts female-friendly bid Gordon Football Netball Club female players do it tough – they don’t have access to toilets, showers or changerooms. They change in storage shed cubicles at the Gordon Recreation Reserve. So the club is hoping the state government’s Female Friendly Facilities Fund will help it improve conditions for their female players and encourage more women to play. Moorabool council will apply to the state government, on behalf of the club, for $250,000 to build a female-friendly netball “shelter”, including changerooms, a second netball court
with competition-standard court lighting and training-standard court lighting for the existing court. The project is expected to cost $375,000, of which council will provide $75,000 and the club $30,000. They hope to raise $20,000 in in-kind contributions to make up the shortfall. In a report presented at last week’s council meeting, Moorabool council officers said the club had undertaken significant fundraising for the project, which has also been identified as one of the council’s “priority projects”. “The overall strategic rationale for the project is sound,” the report stated. “The primary focus of the Female Friendly Facilities Fund
is not just on increasing female participation. It’s also about changing cultures within clubs, retaining participants and improving facilities so that they are at least comparable to male sports … completion of this project will significantly improve the culture of the user clubs and enhance gender equity.” If successful, the project will need to be finished by May 2020. Although the council notified every Moorabool sports club about the Female Friendly Facilities Fund, only two submissions had been received – from the Gordon Football Netball Club and the Dunnstown Community Centre.

Pathway to big screen It’s time to end the whitewash of Australia’s screens, according to Santilla Chingaipe. The award-winning Seddon journalist and documentary filmmaker is the creative force behind an event designed to open up pathways into film and television for young people from diverse backgrounds in Melbourne’s west. The West Writers Forum Film and Screen Day, to be held at Footscray Community Arts Centre this month, will be a day of workshops, activities and networking for young people from low-income, Indigenous, migrant and refugee backgrounds. A report by Screen Australia found that contrary to Australia’s multicultural make-up, more than one third of local TV dramas screened over the past five years had all-white casts.

The council resolved to not make a submission on behalf of the Dunnstown Community Centre, saying its project scope went beyond what was applicable to the fund. Officers said they would continue working with the centre to further develop the proposal. Dunnstown Community Centre proposed an extension of its pavilion, which would include “female-friendly” elements in the player and umpire rooms. But the project also involved building meeting, storage and medical rooms, and a gym. “The clear link to female participation outcomes need to be further understood and able to be demonstrated,” the report stated.

Week to honour women Aboriginal women have been trailblazers for many – in and outside of their communities. And this year’s NAIDOC week will honour and celebrate them. Under the theme – ‘Because of her we can’ – Melton South’s Kirrip House will be taking part in this year’s events by hosting a community day on Saturday, July 14. Executive officer Peter Webster said it was time for Aboriginal women to be recognised for their hard work. “[In] our heritage and culture, women have been leaders in fighting for the rights of people, not only the Aboriginal community,” Mr Webster said. “In a lot of cases, a lot of the [Aboriginal]
organisations have been started by women. “[Women] have been there to raise their kids and look after our elderly – it’s about time they were recognised for the huge amount of work they do, not just for our community and culture, but the community as a whole.” There will be traditional games, including football played with a possum-skin ball, traditional dancers and Dreamtime stories. Nurses from Djerriwarrh Health will also be there to conduct women’s health checks. From 10am-2pm at the Melton community hall, 232 High Street, Melton. For more information, call 9743 2807. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE John Rees has been president of the Exford Residents and Landowners Association for the past 20 years. He tells Sumeyya Ilanbey helping his community get things done has been his favourite part.
I’ve lived here since 1974. I lived here before then, from 1958 to 1960. I’d bought a block of land in Hoppers Crossing to build a house … by the time I got around to building it, I thought ‘where’s my land gone?’ It was so small. We looked around and found a 10-acre block in Exford and bought it for virtually what we sold our Hoppers Crossing block for.
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? I don’t have a favourite place to be honest. If we go to the shops, I might sit at one of the cafes for a coffee. What do you hope to achieve as president of the Exford Residents Association?
It’s just a good area, like how far we are from the Melbourne CBD, how far we are from Ballarat, how far from Geelong, how far from the airport. There’s so much going for Melton and it’s just going crazy with all the developments.
I enjoy the mental stimulation of meeting with … bureaucratic people to come up with a change to get things done. People have problems with council regulations and they come to us. We go back and forth with council officers to get a satisfactory outcome. I’d like to just improve the area; make it more cohesive in the community and try and get more people involved in the community.
What would you change about the area if you could?
What are some of the pressing issues you’ve identified as an association?
I would probably get more shopping facilities and a wider range of shops. We’ve got one major shopping centre and it was a fight to get it developed. Everybody was going out of town or to Watergardens [Shopping Centre] to shop … When they actually did build Woodgrove, the developers said they hadn’t realised there was so much demand for it. But I think we need another shopping centre. And when a development goes ahead, and land is marked for a shopping centre, council needs to enforce that it be built sooner rather than later.
Infrastructure is probably the biggest thing. Being in Exford, and out of the town [centre], unless you make noise, you tend to get forgotten about. It’s like an old squeaky wheel syndrome where you keep making the noise and people will eventually do something so you’ll go away. We could have better services. We tried getting natural gas down here many years ago and we just got stonewalled by authorities because they said there’s not enough residents. How a development so close to Melton and so close to the natural gas pipeline not have any of it is beyond me.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton?

Tribute to west women Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander women of the west are featured in an exhibition that is part of NAIDOC Week celebrations. The exhibition, Honouring Women of the West, features 24 photographic portraits and will be on show until Sunday, July 15. The images are on display at St Albans Community Centre on Princess Street, St Albans, and will tour other locations throughout the western region after this week. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the images captured an inspirational side of the local indigenous and Torres Strait Islander women and their contribution to their communities. “This is a great opportunity for everyone to
come together and support ... local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” she said. “This year’s theme – ‘Because of her, we can’ – is particularly poignant. “It is not only a chance to celebrate the triumphs of indigenous women, but to recognise the importance of continuing work to reduce adversities still experienced by indigenous women in our communities.” NAIDOC Week is celebrated across Australia each July in recognition of the history, culture and achievements of indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Set on a good-sized block of about 604 square metres, this house has a clever layout and loads of living space all styled in natural tones with plenty of timber, greens and creams. Together with a gas fireplace, fantastic kitchen and good-sized rooms, it’s a great prospect. Over-sized floorboards in the front hallway make it instantly welcoming. Four generous fitted bedrooms are to the left and three living areas to the right. The main bedroom has a good view of the street, a walk-in robe and great en suite. Three further bedrooms all have built-in robes. The kitchen has stainless-steel appliances, stone benches and a glass splashback that all tie in perfectly with the colour story. Neat and tidy undercover alfresco dining looks over a good-sized backyard. Out the front, a gorgeous facade is complemented by an established garden and a double garage.
Appealing earthy colours together with well maintained spaces, both inside and out, help to create the welcoming feel of this property. Be welcomed by a wide tiled hall and a large carpeted lounge with made-to-measure curtains and matching pelmets where the ducted heating will add to the cosy feel. All three bedrooms well presented, especially the main bedroom with a walk-in robe and stylish and large en suite with contemporary fittings. The open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area is fitted with the same neutral colour scheme found throughout. The kitchen has stone benchtops and stainless-steel appliances including a 900mm oven. There’s also plenty of room for entertaining, with a large pergola with decking looking over a picture-perfect garden setting.

The triple-gabled facade, timber-framed windows and mature trees out the front all create a welcoming first impression for this house. It is is deceptively large, with four bedrooms, a great lounge area with hardwood floors and a large kitchen and meals area. With all that’s old being new again, there are many features to retain here. It’s set on about 585 square metres so there’s plenty of room for an extension (STCA). The location is ideal for families, too, with Melton South station, Al Iman College, Staughton College, St Anthony’s primary, Melton South primary as well as shopping and parkland all walking distance from the front door. Split-system air-conditioning units and a single garage add to the appeal.
Neat, tidy and homey, this two-storey property begins with a lovely front room with cream carpeting, a split-system and fan light. The study is opposite. Walk through to the kitchen and meals area. Here the kitchen has an L-shaped bench with a breakfast bench area for two. The meals area is opposite. It’s tiled in slate with views of the courtyard. With six bedrooms, this house is definitely designed to cater for a large family. All bedrooms are carpeted and have built-in robes and the main bedroom has an en suite. Two more bedrooms are on the ground floor, together with the main bathroom and separate laundry. Three further bedrooms are upstairs, one with a walk-in robe, as well as a second lounge and a powder room. Set on about 570 square metres, it’s close to schools, parks and Woodgrove Shopping Centre.

The England team this year vows to bring back the Cup as they try to emulate their 1966 success. This is the first time England has made it this far in the competition since being knocked out by West Germany in 1990. They will play Croatia in the semi finals, the team that knocked out host nation Russia. In the hope that “this time it’s coming home,” England is dreaming that this could be their year. Against all odds, this team has been playing some good football and player Harry Kane is at the center of it. Scoring six goals in this World Cup so far, he is currently in line to win the Golden Boot.

SPORT Bacchus March appoints new coach James Lidgett has been appointed senior coach at Bacchus Marsh Cricket Club for the next three seasons. Lidgett, who was one of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s best players last season, was announced as the Bulls coach last week. Lidgett takes over the role from Ben Robertson, who was captain-coach for one season. Lidgett said he was excited by the challenge of taking on the role at the reigning McIntyre Cup premiers. “It’s something I’ve been working towards,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed coaching and got a taste a while back. “I got my start at the Central Highlands, and there were good coaches and they help you learn to coach. I played there as well, it’s a good program. “I helped out the girls program where my sister was involved. It was pretty fun and it got
me interested in doing it in the future.” Last season was Lidgett’s first back at the Bulls, having played Victorian Premier Cricket with Greenvale Kangaroos and Essendon. Lidgett was named Greenvale’s first XI captain at just 19. Last season he finished second behind joint Sullivan medallist Ben Way, for runs scored, making 669 runs at an average of nearly 48. Lidgett said it had been a hard decision to come back to local cricket, but a shoulder injury meant he couldn’t play to the level he wanted to. “It was a tough call, as I love the competition and the competitiveness. “It hurt to do, but I couldn’t perform at my best. If the body was fully fit, who knows where I would be. “I’m waiting for surgery and been waiting for quite a while. I haven’t been doing much in the off season.” While he had been appointed coach, Lidgett
said he would make a decision on whether he would also captain the side closer to the season. He said he was unsure whether Robertson would be returning, but said he would love to have him back. “He’s very valuable as a player and as a leader at the club,” he said. “It’s unbelievable what he did for the club and he managed to get the best out of me.” Lidgett said he was hopeful that most of last year’s premiership side would return. Lidgett knows there will be some pressure on the side going into the season as reigning premier, but he knows they can’t expect to have the same season again. “It was an unbelievable season going through undefeated and having the ultimate success.” Tara Murray James Lidgett is Bacchus Marsh’s new coach. (Shawn Smits)
Panthers on the prowl By Tara Murray Melton South continues to show signs of improvement in the Ballarat Netball League. One of the youngest teams in the competition, the Panthers are starting to put together some wins and will look to challenge for finals in the run home. On Saturday, they accounted for Redan 37-30. Panthers coach Alan Watson said while the scoreboard only showed a seven goal win, they controlled the game. “It was blowing an absolute gale and pouring with rain and about zero degrees,” he said. “It was a pretty comfortable win in those conditions. We had been hoping to work on our combinations, but the conditions didn’t allow us. “They were above us on the ladder.” The match was the first game of the season for Tahnysha Salanoa. Salanoa came across from Lancefield with Watson during the pre-season, but due to Australian Netball League commitments had been prevented from playing for the Panthers. Watson said everyone was excited to have her on the court. “It was so good to have her back,” he said. “She’s been keen to play all year. “Some of the other girls were in awe of her.” The win moves the Panthers to eighth, with four wins. Watson said the key for them as a “work inprogress” was to be more consistent. “We’ve got a 15-year-old and two 16-year-olds playing,” he said. “The average age is 21 or 22 and we still haven’t had a full team. “Our under-19s are on top of the ladder and we’ve got more players coming through. “It’s good to have a couple of experienced players out there.” Watson said his daughter, Taylah Watson, would be back in the side once she returns from overseas. Watson said the Panthers, now just six points outside the top six, could still challenge for finals. “We’ll take it week by week and try and put the runs on the board. “We’ll see how we go and look for consistent form.” The Panthers will have the chance to see how far they’ve come, with a match up against the undefeated Sunbury Lions. The Lions won the round one match between the two sides. “We’re looking forward to the challenge,” Watson said. 34 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 10, 2018
Tyler Talavou is one of Melton South’s young stars. (Damian Visentini)
“We were able to match it with them in the first quarter [last time]. We didn’t play consistent netball though.” In other results, Darley lost to East Point 60-34. Tarni Lopes and Amy Giaini were best for
the Devils. Bacchus Marsh had a 43-all draw with Sebastopol. The Cobras came from eight goals down at three-quarter time to level the scores. Melton pushed North Ballarat City, but fell short, losing 38-31.
Thoroughbred finals agenda on the slide Melton Thoroughbreds’ finals hopes will be on the line when they return to the court next week in Big V women’s division 2 basketball. The Thoroughbreds, who are in the middle of a two-week break, are seventh, two games behind fifth-placed Northern East Bushrangers. Having been in the top five until recently, a few tough few weeks have seen the Thoroughbreds slip out of a finals spot. Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn said they had dropped a few winnable games. “Results haven’t gone our way,” she said. “We’re playing good basketball and pushing the top teams, so we are up there with them, but we can’t get the results. “It will be tough to get back up there with three games left. Each of those games are must win.” Olcorn said that a two-week break at this time of the season was less than ideal, but they had been training hard and trying to refine a few things. She said that while making finals would be exciting, they were already winners in their first season back in the competition since 2010. “We are still a young team and it’s our first season together,” she said. “We’ve only played 15 games together and are still learning about each other. “We’ll push through the next three weeks and look to finish the season on a high. We’ll hold our heads up high.” This week, the Thoroughbreds will look to raise awareness of youth homelessness and family violence. Melton secretary Donna Richter said many players were unaware youth homelessness was an issue in Melton. She said the players were happy to be involved in raising awareness. A game between local businesses and possibly police will be held before the youth league and men’s games on Saturday. Richter said information about local welfare services would be available throughout the day. Money raised will go to a local charity. Tara Murray

Second quarter lapse proves costly for Centrals Melton Centrals were left to rue a poor second quarter as they went down to Rupertswood in the Riddell District Football League. As has been the case several times this season against top sides, Centrals were in the game. On previous occasions, a poor quarter here or there had made the difference – and that’s how events again unfolded on Saturday against the Sharks. For three quarters, Centrals took it up to one of the competition pacesetters. That one poor quarter, the second, cost them as the Sharks won 8.7 (55)-4.6 (30). Centrals coach Mathew Sproule said the second quarter inflicted the harm. “We played some really good footy in the first quarter into the wind,” he said.
“With the wind in the second quarter, we struggled to score and got four goals down. “We played well in the third quarter and finally were able to get reward for effort in the last quarter, but that second quarter cost us.” Dylan Weir kicked two goals, while Linton Hogan and Michael Callus were two of the standouts. Sproule said the match summed up their season. “We’re not going for four quarters against the top sides,” he said. “We want to win one of these games and show that we are going in the right direction.” While Centrals aren’t getting the wins, Sproule said they were happy with their progress.
He said that with a harder draw this year, they had expected that results would not necessarily reflect the side’s status. Centrals are ninth with four wins. “We’re where we want to be,” he said. “We’re closing the gap on the top sides and winning the games we should be winning. “Last year, we lost to Rupertswood by 100 points. “We’re building momentum and it would now be nice to get some reward for effort.” Centrals will this week face Woodend-Hesket, which has lost its past four games. The Hawks came from behind late to beat the Centrals in round two. Sproule said they were hopeful of having Jonathan Ferri back for the game, but expected
Blake Henderson, who also missed Saturday’s loss, to miss a few more games. In other results, Rockbank fell short against Lancefield. Both sides were looking for their second win of the season and it was the Rams who lead at the first three breaks. Then the Tigers kicked the only three goals of the final quarter to win 8.12 (60)-7.6 (48). Ricky Cameron kicked four goals for the Rams. Diggers Rest smashed Sunbury Kangaroos, 11.10 (76)-1.8 (14). Deven Costigan kicked four goals for the Burras in a best-on-ground performance. Tara Murray

Bacchus Marsh coach Travis Hodgson was inducted into the Ovens and Murray Football League Hall of Fame last week. Hodgson, who has coached Bacchus Marsh for the past three seasons, was inducted for his time at North Albury and Myrtleford football netball clubs. In that time, Hodgson played 220 games, won two premierships and three best and fairest awards, played for the league in representative football and coached both sides.

Melton Bowling Club’s Samantha Shannahan has been named in the Australian Jackaroos emerging squad for the rest of this year. Shannahan is one of five female athletes named in the squad, alongside 10 female athletes named in the Australian Jackaroos squad. Shannahan joined Melton last season.

Bloods claw back form By Tara Murray Melton has returned to the Ballarat Football League winners’ list. After a strong start to the season, the Bloods had dropped their past three matches and fallen out of the top six. Against third-placed North Ballarat City on Saturday, they showed heartening signs they’re regaining their form. No more than a goal separated the two teams at any of the breaks, with the Bloods leading each time. City hit the front in the last quarter, before the Bloods kicked the last three goals to grab a 7.15 (57)-6.7 (43) victory. Bloods’ coach Aaron Tymms said that while it was good to get the win, had they been able to convert more efficiently, they could have won by a bit more. “We played some good footy,” he said. “There wasn’t much difference in what we were doing to the last couple of weeks.
“The main thing has been trying to not turn the footy over as much … it wasn’t as bad this week. “We have been turning the ball over badly at stages.” Tymms said his players had displayed a bit more composure with the ball in hand late in the game – and that had helped them get over the line. He said that was something they had been working on. “They hit the lead with 12 minutes to go and it was a little stressful,” he said. “We were good at looking after the ball early on in the year, but have been turning it over too much lately. “We’ve put an emphasis on controlling the footy.” The Carter boys – Liam and Ryan – were the Bloods’ best, along with ruckman Ben Archard and Connor Griffiths. Liam Carter and Matt Denham were the pick of the goalkickers with two apiece.
Despite the win, the Bloods remain outside the top six in seventh. “We’re only a game behind third,” Tymms said. “The next couple of weeks are important to get wins on the board. The next four games are against sides that are below us. “Hopefully, we’ll get a good run and can keep playing good football. We can’t take the foot off the pedal.” In other results, East Point hammered Darley. The Kangaroos had a massive 33 scoring shots to 17, winning 16.17 (113)-6.11 (47). Ladder leader Bacchus Marsh returned to the winners’ list with a 16.19 (115)-10.6 (66) win against Sebastopol. Aaron Willitts and Ben Speight kicked four goals apiece, with Jake Owen kicking three in a best-on-ground performance. Melton South returned to reality after its first win of the season, losing to the previously winless Redan 17.25 (127)-8.10 (58).
Rockbank has moved into the Riddell District Netball League top six. The Rams, who have been one of the big improvers this season, defeated Diggers Rest for a second time this year, winning 46-32. Defender Mary Brodie was named the Rams’ best in the win, while Anica Scherer was best for the Burras. The Rams replace the Burras in the top six, but the Burras have played one less game. Melton Centrals suffered a 60-34 loss to Rupertswood.
Soccer
Melton Phoenix has produced its best result of the season by knocking off second-placed Gisborne in FFV state league 5 west. It took until the dying minutes for the Phoenix to find the back of the net through Alain Nzitunga to get the win 1-0. Westside Strikers had a 6-1 win against Kensington City.

TOM DANG, SALES CONSULTANT, FURNITURE Which team do you support? Australia – of course! Arsenal is my team in the English Premier League, but I also keep an eye on Barcelona. Actually, I pretty well watch all the EPL teams play. Who is your favourite player and why? Tim Cahill – he’s a World Cup gun. He’s scored some memorable goals and always steps up in the big games. Argentina’s Lionel Messi is the best player I’ve seen play. He’s the player of his generation. He’s been player of the year four times, he’s scored the most goals ever in Spain and has done everything – except win a World Cup. How did you get interested in football? As a kid, I watched all sport with my family. Dad and my older brother taught me about all the football rules and tactics and, by the time I turned 14, I was a dyed-in-the-wool fan. In high school, all my mates were into football and we had huge rivalry over which team was best. Which team do you think will win this year? Either Germany or Argentina. I want Argentina to win because of Messi.

DANH LEE ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT, HARVEY NORMAN SUNSHINE Which team do you support? Portugal – they’ve always been a great side, but have been a bit unlucky. They won the 2012 European Championship, which puts them in a good place going into this year’s World Cup. Their champion, Cristiano Ronaldo, will have his last chance this year to add to his incredible achievements by winning the World Cup – about the only one missing from his trophy shelf. Who is your favourite player and why? Definitely Ronaldo. He’s the most decorated player in the world of football. As a person, he contributes widely to charity, especially for children and at times when natural disasters have struck. How did you get interested in football? My friends were all into the world game and I developed my interest from there. I like the sport. I follow Melbourne City in the A-League and Manchester United in the English Premier League. Which team do you think will win this year? I’d like to say Portugal, but realistically I think Brazil, Spain or Germany will be on the winner’s podium.
