Earning their daily bread It’s taken Chris Sharkey a year to learn how to mill his own wheat. Using a stonemill to grind the wheat fine enough for baking, but not too fine to reduce the amount of processing, is a lot harder than it sounds, according to the fourth generation Balliang crop farmer. “You get the grain, put it between the two stones, press it out and lightly sieve it to get rid of some of the bran and that’s it,” he says. “But that’s just a really simple way of explaining … it was a lot harder than that.” Mr Sharkey teamed up with Darley baker Jordan Walls for a “paddock to plate” bread adventure. Mr Walls’ sourdough bread uses only four ingredients – locally milled flour, water, salt and culture. So far he’s had really good feedback from friends and family who’ve tried it. “It’s a crusty, soft loaf with an earthy flavour,” Mr Walls says. “It’s like a bowl of vegetable soup your mum made when you were 13 and sick, souvlaki after a hangover, fruits and nut after dinner, a good beer on a Sunday afternoon. It just makes you feel good.” The men are awaiting Moorabool council approval to sell their bread. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Tainted waste crackdown By Sumeyya Ilanbey Cameras and GPS tracking devices have been installed in Melton council rubbish trucks to crack down on residents contaminating green waste bins with household rubbish. Those caught doing the wrong thing can be fined up to $155 and repeat offenders could have their bins removed. The council says more than 33 tonnes of organic waste have been diverted to landfill in the past seven months as a result of “excessive” contamination.
Nappies, household waste, rocks, building materials and bricks have been found in recent truck loads. These materials could potentially damage rubbish trucks and processing equipment, according to Melton council. Mayor Bob Turner said council officers, collection drivers and bin inspectors would ramp up patrols in response to the recent spate of contamination in green waste bins. “Trucks are embedded with technology to identify contaminated green waste bins, including cameras and GPS, and can
identify which house was responsible for the contamination,” he said. Cr Turner said diverting green waste also contributed to greenhouse gases. Council planning and development manager Luke Shannon said contamination in green waste bins had been an issue for several years and was widespread in the municipality. Compost Revolution, a New South Wales-based initiative that works with councils across the country to assist residents with composting, says it has reached out to Melton council several times in the past two years.
Melton operations manager Les Stokes this week said the council did not have the budget to implement Compost Revolution’s program. “Council is in the process of establishing a new waste strategy and education program,” he said. “When the time is right, we will reconsider the Compost Revolution program against all other initiatives. ” For more information about what you can put in kerbside bins, visit melton.vic.gov.au/ waste

Diggers Rest airport noise risk By Sumeyya Ilanbey Diggers Rest residents could be subject to more frequent aircraft noise, with a plan for more than three-quarters of Melbourne Airport flights to take off using flight paths to the west of the airport. A draft master plan for the airport’s $10 billion expansion includes a second east-west runway, with 49 per cent of departing flights to take off from the western end of the existing runway and 33 per cent to take off from the new one, between 6am and 11pm.
Melbourne Airport modelling shows that between 11pm and 6pm, 29 per cent of aircraft will depart using western flight paths and 65 per cent of arriving aircraft will use western flight paths. Departing aircraft are generally louder than incoming aircraft. Construction on the new runway is planned to start next year to keep up with massive passenger growth. Melbourne Airport predicts passenger numbers will double to 67 million by 2038. Diggers Rest residents have long complained about aircraft noise. A short-term monitoring
program for the suburb was carried out by AirServices between October, 2014, and January, 2015. It noted that incidents of aircraft noises exceeding 60 decibels ranged from zero to 40 a day, with a daily average of nine. There were 17 times when the noise exceeded 75 decibels, with one of those occurring overnight sometime between 11pm and 6am. Melbourne Airport’s draft master plan also includes commercial expansion and construction, including hotels, offices and industrial warehouses.
While a railway line to the airport is yet to be built, Melbourne Airport says it “strongly” supports the proposal. The draft master plan states planning and developing for a railway line in the next five years were essential to being able to deliver it in a “timely manner”. The draft master plan is out for public comment until October 5. A number of community forums have been organised, including one at Caroline Springs on August 18 between 11am and 2pm. Artist cuts through daily life Inspired by the Indian folk art tradition of paper cutting and the banality of daily life, Anu Patel’s newest exhibition is set to inspire and delight. The Bacchus Marsh woman’s paper, metal and vinyl cut-outs will be displayed at the Caroline Springs Gallery. The exhibition is a celebration of daily life and interaction between animals and humans. Melton mayor Bob Turner is inviting the
community to visit the exhibition by the “talented” artist. “CS Gallery has been lit up with colour,” Cr Turner said. “Anu Patel’s work is captivating, and I encourage residents from every corner of the municipality to come along and experience it for themselves.” Patel has also designed window art specially for the CS Gallery. Meanwhile, paper cut-outs, made by
Table tennis
community members who took part in workshops hosted by Patel earlier this year, will ■ be featured at the Melton library until August 23. Patel will also host another workshop at the library on July 21. Bookings are essential. For more information, or to book, visit melton.vic.gov.au/artgallery
An unsealed Maddingley road will be closed following complaints from residents about noise and dust. A 230-metre section of Bacchus Street, that provided access to Werribee Vale Road will be permanently closed at the Powlett Street intersection. A request to close that section to traffic was raised at Moorabool council’s meeting last October. Officers called for submissions from February to April. Nine submissions were received, with five in favour of the closure of the street and four against its closure. Some residents say there has been an increase in the number of cars using Bacchus Street as a through road to Werribee Vale Road since the Halletts Way extension opened in August, “Cars do not slow down on the dirt section of Bacchus Street, causing extreme dust which takes up to 10 minutes to settle,” one submission stated. “The back of my house is now constantly covered with dust from the dirt road.” Disability services provider Merrimu, which has an office at 2 Bacchus Street, strongly opposed the closure of the road. Merrimu president Michael Wale said he was concerned about emergency vehicles not being able to get access to the site from either end of the street. “To evacuate [more than 100] people in an emergency, either a fire or other hazard such as gas explosion, we need every exit and access road available,” Mr Wale wrote in his submission. “We would have more than 15 vehicles evacuating over 100 people.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Deaths rock community A family is grieving and a tight-knit religious community is in shock after the death of two young children in a head-on collision in Truganina. The children have been identified as Ruana and Immanuel George from St Albans. Police last week charged a 41-year-old Rockbank man, who remains in hospital, with negligence causing serious injury and two counts of culpable driving. The children were travelling home with their parents from a birthday celebration when the collision occurred on Hopkins Road in Truganina in the early hours of Sunday, July 8. Ruana, 10, was killed at the scene. Her father, George Panicker, mother Manju Varughese and brother Immanuel George, 4, were rushed to hospital. Immanuel, also known as Manu, died at Royal Children’s Hospital about 6.30pm on Monday night. His mother remains in a critical condition. Mr Panicker was released from hospital, but has remained by his wife’s side. The family has been described as loving, quiet and religious by members of their community in Melbourne’s west. The vicar of St Mary’s Indian Orthodox Cathedral in Melbourne, Reverend Father Pradeep Ponnachan, said all were well-known members of the church. “They were a devoted, pious family,” he said. ”The church community is terribly disturbed, there is no words to explain.” Melbourne teacher Christina Prakanthan said she had taught Ruana classical Indian dancing for more than three years. She last saw the bright 10-year-old at her regular class on Friday night. “She started here as a young girl,” said Ms Prakanthan, who owns a dance school in Caroline Springs. “She was really friendly with

everyone, a bit shy in the class, a nice girl. I just loved her so much.” In a note last year, Ruana wrote: “What branthanatyam [Indian classical dancing] means to me. Trying your best and having a go, it also means to me learning all the steps and doing what the teacher says. And it also means to practise every day.” Other parents who have children at the dance school have expressed their shock.
In messages given to The Age via the dance school, parent Ujjwala Mukadam said: “Ruana had a very cute smile, and [was] my daughter Sanika’s best buddy in dance class. Rest in peace little angel.” A gofundme page has been organised to help raise money for the family at gofundme.com/ help-for-the-panicker-family – The Age

Invest in west call goes out Increased investment in Melbourne’s west, including a minister for the region and payroll tax relief for small businesses, is advocated in a new report. With the west’s population set to double by 2050, and one in five young Victorians set to call it home, western suburbs councils and advocacy group LeadWest are calling on governments to “urgently” focus on the region. Global engineering and building company Arup, which compiled The future is west: Investing in Melbourne’s newest generation on behalf of LeadWest, has made a number of recommendations in a bid to ensure the region can keep up with its burgeoning population. The report recommends a minister for Melbourne’s west to “champion” the region in cabinet discussions and help attract investment. It recommends setting up special economic zones, where small businesses will be given payroll tax relief similar to what’s happening in regional Victoria. LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said investing in transport and creating jobs was “critical” to the region and state. “The window of opportunity to shape the future of Melbourne’s west is now,” Mr Rowley said. “Our rapidly expanding population is a huge opportunity. But if the right investment and proper management doesn’t happen now, the repercussions will impact not only Victoria, but also the nation’s economy.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Ballan CFA plans ‘advancing’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Country Fire Authority has applied to Moorabool council for a planning permit to build a new firefighter training centre at Ballan. The state government announced in May last year plans to build the new centre on the corner of Gillespies Lane and Ingliston Road, saying design and planning works were expected to start soon, with construction set to begin in the first half of this year.
But Star Weekly can confirm the CFA, Moorabool council and the state government are still in planning stages, with construction not expected to start until later this year. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said: “It’s important to ensure the site is in suitable condition so we can get on with the job of building a world-class training facility for our firefighters and emergency management workers.” The state government committed $31 million in its 2016-17 budget to buy land and build the
new facility in the Central Highlands region following the closure of the Fiskville centre. There had been intense community pressure on the state government and Emergency Management Victoria to build the new centre in Ballan, which has reportedly lost at least $16 million from the local economy as a result of Fiskville’s closure. The new centre will be led by the CFA, but emergency services personnel from across the state, including SES and Ambulance Victoria, will also train there.
Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford said the CFA had lodged a planning application and the council was helping the authority with its community consultation plans. “We are confident the project is advancing,” Mr Croxford said. “[Council] will advance the planning permit process over the next month.” A CFA spokesman denied there were any delays with the project, despite the state government announcing last year that construction would have started by now.
Hillside hero’s big kick Anne-Marie Mason never thinks twice about going above and beyond for the Hillside Football Club. Whether it’s organising a fundraising event, or promoting the club to the wider community, Ms Mason is always willing. For this selflessness – while juggling her career and children – she has won Taylors Hill Village’s Captains of Community award. Ms Mason said she was humbled and shocked to not only take out the top prize – a $1000 Accor Hotels gift voucher she says she’ll share with the club – but also to be nominated. “There are so many people who volunteer and work at our club and are committed to creating great footballers,” she said. “But my passion is about creating great community members as well as great footballers.” The Sydenham woman has been volunteering with the club for seven years. Last year, she was instrumental in organising a fundraising
day that helped raise more than $5000 for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. She’s helping organise a fundraising event at the Hillside Football Club’s homegrounds at Landscape Drive this weekend. The day will raise money for Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, an organisation that raises awareness about organ and tissue donation. Taylors Hill Village marketing manager Melissa Chisnall said the centre was delighted to give back to the people who did so much for their community. “It’s people like Anne-Marie Mason … who make up the heart of the community, dedicating their time to make it a better place,” Ms Chisnall said. “These individuals put in incredible amounts of time and effort into helping their community groups, always going above and beyond.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Rockbank school site locked in By Sumeyya Ilanbey The state government is in the process of acquiring a 3.5-hectare site in Rockbank for a future primary school. Woodlea developer Mirvac has agreed to hand over the parcel of land, at Timbertop Parade, Aintree, in lieu of paying a Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution. Mirvac will construct roads to the site and provide essential utilities including gas, electricity, sewerage and telecommunications. The acquisition has been hailed a win for the local community and taxpayers, with the
government getting the site for considerably less than the Valuer-General’s valuation, according to the Victorian Planning Authority. The site has been valued at $8.2 million, according to a state government spokesman. However, the government and education department have remained tight-lipped on when funding to build the school will be announced. Education department spokeswoman Katie Elliot said it would be subject to future budget announcements. “Families in Rockbank North are a step closer to having a new primary school, with
the government acquiring land through a landmark planning agreement,” Ms Elliot said. This is the second Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution agreement of its kind and follows a 12-month negotiation process. Melton council engagement and advocacy manager Daniel Hogan said council had been working with the Victorian Planning Authority to identify, and secure, future school sites. “The proposed new school is one of the top education priorities for our growing community and we are delighted to see it is one step closer to being realised,” Mr Hogan said.
A state government spokesman said the government would consider funding the construction of the school in next year’s state budget. The Victorian School Building Authority organised a community engagement workshop earlier this year at Rockbank calling for resident feedback on school designs to match local needs. Education Minister James Merlino said at the time the input would help shape the future of education in the area and ensure that new schools best catered for students and their families.
Botanical bounty John Bentley is committed to helping revive our understanding, and appreciation, of indigenous plants. The Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden president led a guided tour of the garden as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations on Friday. About 20 people took part, with a number of them first-time visitors. Mr Bentley said everyone enjoyed the tour and wanted to go home and find out more about indigenous plants and bush foods. The group learned about ways Aboriginal people used indigenous plants in cooking or everyday life. Mr Bentley says he’s learned about this information through books, workshops and interactions with Aboriginal people. “I just think this is a whole part of history that was lost for some time,” Mr Bentley said. “And if we don’t promote this knowledge, it’ll be completely lost. People are starting to
become really interested to find out about all of the uses of plants and other things we’ve got in the land.” Mr Bentley says some of his favourite plants are the river mint that grows along river banks around Melton, and the drooping she-oak. Aboriginal people would use river mint in cooking, but also crush the leaves to use as a mentholated ointment. And the drooping she-oak would be used to make tool handles and clapsticks, Mr Bentley says. The Melton Botanic Garden is at 21 Williams Street. Get it right on bin night: organic waste
Mayor’s Message
Cr Bob Turner Council prides itself on hosting vibrant community events that everyone can enjoy. This month is no exception. Join us on Saturday 21 July, at the Papercut Colour! exhibition opening at Melton Library and Learning Hub.
Growing Suburbs Fund, for projects ranging from the development of recreation reserves across the City, to community pavilions and centres. We expect to be notified of the outcome in the next couple of months and will keep you updated.
This exhibition was created by participants in artist, Anu Patel’s, Papercut Colour workshops featuring age-old symbols of unity, longevity, peace and love. We also invite you to come along another great PopCulture event on Friday 27 July, and celebrate a special Christmas in July screening of comedy classic, Home Alone. Reserve your ticket at melton.vic.gov.au/ popculture
And finally, I’d like to congratulate all the women who are about to take part in the next Daughters of the West program. Starting this week, participants will learn about exercise, healthy eating, mental health and gender equity, and as a graduate of the Sons of the West program, I know firsthand the benefits this has on health and wellbeing.
Another thing that Council prides itself on is advocating on behalf of our community to secure funding for the timely delivery of critical infrastructure. We recently submitted 12 funding applications to the State Government’s Melton City Council is urging residents to get it right on bin night, and be careful when sorting their rubbish, as a large number of green organic waste bins have been contaminated. Materials such as nappies, general waste, rocks, building materials, plastic bags and bricks have all been found in in kerbside green waste bin collections. This meant Council was forced to send the material to landfill. Since January this year, about 33 tonnes of green waste has had to be diverted to landfill because of excessive contamination. Council is concerned with the amount of green waste being sent to landfill, as the material could be better used in farming and agricultural environments. It is also becoming costly for Council, and in turn, ratepayers over time. Collection drivers, Council officers and bin inspectors will be ramping up patrols in a bid to reduce contamination among organic materials. Residents found to have contaminated their organics bins may be fined up to $155, depending in what type of waste is found. Those who are unsure of which bins to place their rubbish within can call Council on 9747 7200, for more information.
Things accepted in green organic waste bins include: •
Grass clippings
•
Weeds
•
Leaves
•

Cr Michelle Mendes It gives me great pleasure to advise that Council adopted its 2018/2019 Budget at our June Ordinary Meeting. Council has allocated $2.9 million to the design and construction of City Vista sports precinct, which will include ovals, tennis and netball courts and a pavilion in Fraser Rise, a rapidly growing suburb in our community. We have also committed further funding for stage 1 of the MacPherson Park redevelopment project. Improvements will include a new sports pavilion, car park, landscaping, entry road improvements, and a multipurpose synthetic field. Funds have also been allocated to the completion of the long-awaited Caroline Springs Leisure Centre redevelopment project, and the construction of the new sub-regional tennis facility. Home at last in Bacchus Marsh By Sumeyya Ilanbey Nicole Fitzsimons had been wanting a piece of the Aussie dream for a decade. But amid booming property prices, the dream of owning her own home was getting harder to turn into a reality. The Caulfield woman had been renting for more than 10 years. But with one toddler, and another child on the way, she knew she needed the stability of owning her own home. Ms Fitzsimons will settle on her four-bedroom Bacchus Marsh house in
September after co-purchasing it with the state government under its pilot HomesVic program. She needed to come up with a five per cent deposit for the $475,000 house. Under the program, Ms Fitzsimons is not allowed to sell her house for two years and it must be her principal place of residence. If she wants to turn it into an investment property, she will have to pay out the government’s share. Last year, the state government announced it would co-purchase up to 400 properties, taking an equity share of up to 25 per cent of each. “[This program] really suits us at the
moment,” Ms Fitzsimons said. “I’m a stay-at-home mum and my husband is working … this was the only way we were going to get into the market really. “Some people have said, ‘Are you comfortable with the government owning a part of your house?’. The way we look at it is, it’s either the government or the bank.” Ms Fitzsimons said the program, which offers houses in several areas across the state, including Bacchus Marsh, encouraged her to look in suburbs she hadn’t previously considered.
Bacchus Marsh’s relative proximity to Melbourne’s CBD and Ballarat, where she hails from, was a big selling point, Ms Fitzsimons said. The government is encouraging more aspiring home owners to apply for the HomesVic program. A state government spokesman said the treasury and finance department would assess the merits of the pilot program once all spaces had been filled. – with Domain
Shine a light on cancer Being diagnosed with blood cancer can be an experience that is isolating and filled with darkness. One woman is asking the community to be the light in someone’s darkest hours and let them know they’re not alone. Kaylene Grigsby hosted a Leukaemia Foundation Light the Night event at Arthur Westlake Memorial Reserve in Melton West last year and is asking someone to take up the mantle this year. The event includes a lantern ceremony and a walk around a local park. Ms Grigsby said the evenings were about bringing people together and allowing them to connect. “It’s such a rewarding experience being able to give without expecting something in return,” she said. “We had a boy, who was going through leukaemia treatment last year. His family and school community came as
well. It’s a time when people can go away from the hospital and clinical environment and be surrounded by people who care.” Leukaemia Foundation chief executive Bill Petch said most people knew someone affected by blood cancer and encouraged people to host, or join, an event. “As well as giving the community the chance to come together and walk in solidarity, hosting a Light the Night event is a rewarding way to show your support and help to raise funds to ensure local families affected by blood cancer receive the support they need,” Mr Petch said. More than 60,000 Australians live with blood cancer, including leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma, with 35 people diagnosed each day. Details: lightthenight.org.au/get-involved Sumeyya Ilanbey

MY PLACE After 10 years at the helm, Moorabool council chief executive Rob Croxford has called it quits. Mr Croxford will resign in October to dedicate a lot more time to his health … and guitar skills. He talks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. How long have you been Moorabool council chief executive?
communities just get on and do it themselves – the strength of community in some of our towns is admirable. Resourcing required to respond to the growth we have versus what local government can deliver is quite stark. We’re working to deliver to a town made up of a couple hundred people, to a precinct structure plan designed for 1500 people.
I started in July 2010. My first local government job was way back in November 1997 … before coming to Moorabool, I was at Murrindindi shire, up in north-east Victoria. What’s your favourite thing about being Moorabool’s chief executive?
What have been some of council’s big wins?
The opportunity to make a difference. We’re trying to ensure the community has the services and facilities and, I guess, the lifestyle they need and expect in a peri-urban area. Our job is trying to balance all of this and get the best outcome for the community. favourite
thing
about
The mix of the urban areas with the beautiful rural as well. There are state parks, but also the landscape in the west of the shire – it’s got that unique mix. Even the agricultural areas when you’re coming to Bacchus Marsh – it’s quite iconic. What are some of the positive and negative changes you’ve seen over the years? The positive changes are that local governments have become far more professional. Many of the people we work with have degrees and qualifications, and are specialists in engineering, town planning, social service, and the like. They’ve studied for years and done a

decade of work to get to managerial positions. The negatives: constant battle of getting investment into the community we desperately need to improve recreational facilities, improving traffic outcomes, better community facilities. We haven’t seen investment in some of our towns for decades, until council has taken the bold step of spending their own money and in the process borrowing heavily. All councils need significant investment by governments. We need to have a fundamental rethink of
what’s working. The system is quite broken and the only way to solve that is to have some deep thinking, rather than knee-jerk reactions. What’s been the biggest challenge about managing a shire the size of Moorabool? The challenge is we’ve got 60 smaller towns and hamlets across 2500 square kilometres. The ability to appear to be delivering for all of those communities is extremely difficult. Many
The key things that we’ve done is really achieve a sound financial footing … improved all our financial indicators … and we have quite positive reports in our financial sustainability. But we have gone into debt. We’ve invested heavily in some very large projects – the Hallets Way extension, Racecourse Reserve at Bacchus Marsh. Roads and bridges investment in the west of the shire has been the largest it’s ever been – capital works programs that run in the $15 million to $18 million vicinity. Where to from here? Probably the key thing for me is to get a bit of balance in my life, getting fit and healthy. The hours you spend, not only as CEO but as senior local government members at meetings in the night and functions on the weekend, you don’t get a healthy work-life balance, so I want that. I’ve been learning the guitar since I got here – I got a guitar for my 50th birthday so I’ve been learning that and it’s time to put serious work into it. And a bit of volunteering as well. The volunteers in Moorabool have done some amazing work.

trip and the conversations that took place were really enlightening.” Acting Superintendent Healy said the historical context of the track also played a prominent role. “There were things we saw which put things into perspective,” he said. “When you think of the heroic efforts of the soldiers – coupled with starvation, injury and snipers – our efforts seem insignificant.” Mr Healy said the group put months of preparation in before taking on the trek. “In total it was eight days and seven nights carrying 15 to 20-kilogram packs, so it required some preparation,” he said.

Police officers, at-risk young people and future leaders from the west have joined forces to tackle the Kokoda Track. The group undertook the gruelling assignment over eight days, using teamwork, trust and friendship to get them through. Acting Superintendent Adrian Healy said the trek was a success in more ways than one. “Three-quarters of the youths that took part in this were at-risk, so part of this was building a sense of trust,” he said. “There’s been a number of police programs go to Kokoda and I think part of the reasoning behind that is that it builds on the qualities of the army. However, for me one of the best aspects of this was the friendships formed. We had five different cultures represented on this

Trees a top treat at zoo By Tate Papworth Giraffes, elephants and orangutans have been filling up with a special snack from Taylors Lakes. Melbourne Water removed two large willow trees from the Lake Shelduck retarding basin last week and passed them on to Melbourne Zoo for use as food. Melbourne Water project manager Elmo Tharmaseelan said the zoo worked closely with the team during the removal process. “We were thrilled to learn that these trees were suitable for the zoo and it’s great to know they are going to provide a source of food for the animals,” Mr Tharmaseelan said. “We had a representative from Melbourne Zoo on site the entire time we were removing the trees to ensure that everything was done correctly for the animals. “We have been able to provide a total of approximately six tonnes of snack material for them, which is a great result. “This is the second time Melbourne Water has identified that it had suitable material to donate to the zoo and we will be looking for further opportunities to make donations like this in the future. “The roots of the willow trees were growing directly into the weir, and as a result our retarding basin upgrade works couldn’t proceed without removing them,” he said. “These upgrade works are necessary to ensure the retarding basin continues to operate safely and protect the local community from flooding.” Melbourne Zoo life science manager Adrian Howard said the “fresh browse” provided important nutritional and enrichment components for a number of Zoos Victoria animals.

“These include elephants, giraffes, tortoises, tapirs, orangutans, gorillas, lemurs, baboons, gibbons, reptiles, tree kangaroos and hippos,” he said. “Zoos Victoria operates a specialised plantation at Werribee Open Range Zoo, which consists of 16 tree species totalling 9000 trees. “However donations still make up approximately 40 to 50 per cent of annual browsing food used at Melbourne Zoo and we are always grateful for suitable materials.”

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
A place made in heaven Priscilla Moca discovers the power of nature in New Zealand. New Zealand, you mountainous miracle – how did I not find you earlier? You’re so much more than Australia’s colder cousin, with your peculiar beasts and abundance of adventure. Jandals and sky-high petrol prices aside, I pity the Australian who chooses not to explore across the ditch.
Landscape
Mother Nature must have doted on New Zealand – with rolling hills and black sand beaches in the north, and towering glaciers in the south. After a day basking in hot springs and sulfur steam at Rotorua, we took on Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Strong winds were forecast, but we pushed on, seeing blue skies and calm conditions. We learnt our lesson as we closed in on the Red Crater at 1886-metres high. Savage gusts bowled us over and stole my hat, and we had to turn back. The five-hour return helped us reflect on our foolishness, and take in the incredible sight of New Zealand’s most active volcano, Mount Ruapehu. It is even more imposing when you learn it last erupted in 2007. We basked in the beauty of the country’s largest body of water, Lake Taupo, from kayaks. Wet cold feet weren’t enough to dampen the serenity as we marvelled at the vast blue surrounding us. Its beauty was pipped by another lake - Lake Wanaka. The town, spread along the water’s edge, is nestled between towering mountains. While it’s less touristy than Queenstown, there’s plenty to do. It’s a hikers’ paradise, with dozens of walks close by. We climbed Roys Peak
The panorama at Roys Peak summit takes in surrounding peaks and most of Lake Wanaka. (Mark Santomartino)

in a frantic rush to beat the sunset, and it left us breathless in more ways than one. It is a steep climb which makes you wish you made more effort at the gym, but the 16-kilometre trek is worth it. The panorama at its summit takes in surrounding peaks and most of Lake Wanaka. Wanaka also proved a great base for other day hikes, including Mount Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain. The treacherous Cook can only be climbed in summer, so we opted for the Hooker Valley track. It wound through alpine streams fed by the Mueller Glacier, and was a wonderful way to take in the mountain. The track ends at Hooker Lake, a stunning shade of grey-blue with floating icebergs.

Awesome animals and funky food
Sheep are a staple sight, but we noticed plenty of other wildlife across the islands. No surprise, since animals make up 95 per cent of New Zealand’s population. The Arnold Schwarzenegger of insects, the weta, took a liking to my leg in Wellington. The world’s heaviest insect is like an oblivious visitor who won’t go home, and I carried him around Mt Victoria. We encountered a more slithery sort of critter at the Waitamo Caves, where thousands of glow worms thrive. It is disturbing to learn their poo makes them glow, but doesn’t make their galaxy any less impressive. We also had the pleasure of seeing wild baby goats in Queenstown. Two weeks old and stumbling around, they were the most adorable kids I’ve ever seen. Including the human sort. All the goat gushing fuelled our appetites, and as Melburnians, we gravitated towards the lengthy line at Ferg Burger. After wondering
TRAVEL
‘how good could a burger be?’, I got my answer. Heavenly. I was brought back to earth by a distinctive fruit called the feijoa. My poor tongue grappled to comprehend a tangy mix of perfume and pineapple as it met this NZ favourite. I’m glad the kiwifruit caught on in Australia, but our neighbours can keep their green delicacy.
Thrills
It’s hard to visit Queenstown without
developing a baseless sense of bravado and deciding to jump from great height. We chose the original Kawarau Bridge Bungy, and it was with great trepidation we arrived that morning. Ignoring advice to look ahead, I maintained a solid stare at the 43-metre drop. Several false starts saw me insist my shoes weren’t tight enough, cling to the bungee operator’s pants and regret my choice. Some gentle coaxing to the edge, and before I knew it I was leaping with my hands up, in
what was described by the bungee operator as “like a meerkat”. They’re graceful, right? As our adrenaline levels returned to base, we signed on to the Shotover Canyon Swing. It’s an 109 metre drop, where you’ll hit a speed of 150 kilometres an hour before becoming a pendulum between two cliffs. A tip here – the eagle-eyed crew delight at your terror, so do not ask them to go easy on you. It spurs them on, so while you’re thinking of a comeback they will send you falling into the abyss. Also, it’s free if you do it naked. Great if you’re game, but don’t be an obnoxious tourist and try to barter a half-price swing by going topless. Not cool. Not every activity has to terrify, and we gladly indulged in other pursuits, including a wine tasting at Rippon vineyards at Lake Wanaka. The sips were that much sweeter against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. It’s a moment that captures the land of the long white cloud, perfectly balancing the awesome power of nature with a taste of modern life.
The last thing you need is a blocked sewer at home To help prevent a blockage make sure the overflow relief gully (ORG) is raised well above the ground and is unblocked. Look for the ORG in your backyard near the laundry, kitchen or bathroom.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds Small Graces packs a big punch The burned-out shell of Little Saigon Market casts rather a glum metaphorical shadow across Footscray central, so we love it that Small Graces and some of its neighbours are mounting a fightback by bringing life and sunshine to Byron Street and surrounds. So we definitely pay attention when informed a dinner service is being launched. Not only that – we are invited to try it out (see full disclosure below). Thus it is with keen anticipation and high expectations that Bennie and I front up for dinner. Our expectations are not met. Instead, they are exceeded in grand and delicious style. Just about everything we try from a brilliantly chosen selection from the deep dinner menu is a righteous hit. A salad of beets, grapefruit, radicchio, hazelnuts and goats cheese (top photo, $14) is enjoyed by us both, but especially by Salad Boy Bennie. La Hoguera jamon serrano and garlic-fennel salami are wonderful and served with pickles. They come with luscious warmed green olives and inhalable chargrilled bread. Carrots, salsa of carrot tops, pecorino pepato and seeds ($13) are a sublime veg offering. Squid ink croquette with garlic aioli and sorrel/pea croquette with preserved lemon aioli ($4 each) are, for us, duds. We have no problem with their striking ugliness. But they are too salty – even for us,
SMALL GRACES Address: 57 Byron Street, Footscray Phone: 9912 6429 two lads who had expressed to Small Graces’ Bec our fondness, upon arrival, for salty restaurant food. Also somewhat visually unappealing is the cauliflower, currants, fermented grapes and macadamia nuts ($15). But in this case the result is an intriguing winner. A pile of lentils appears dull. It’s not. It’s one of the night’s high sensations. Lentils, quince and mints ($12) are moist, succulent, rather sweet and a tremendous pulse dish the likes of which we’ve never before encountered. Brussels sprouts, Jerusalem artichokes and Manjimup truffle ($15) are al dente and a big hit with Kenny; Bennie, no so much. Our evening’s sole outright meat hit comes from hanger steak, burnt onions and bearnaise ($20). We adore that juicy meat and its onion foil. The sauce is good, too – but we consider its richness a bit jarring and unnecessary. The inner west is blessed to have Small Graces doing its dinner thing. And there’s a heap of dinner-time scope in which vegetarians can frolic. There’s booze on hand at Small Graces, which is now open for dinner Thursdays-Saturdays. Consider The Sauce dined at Small Graces as guests of management.

The carpeted main bedroom has a fan light and split-system, as well as a separate retreat space, twin walk-in robes and an en suite with twin-basin vanities and a double-length shower. Three further bedrooms are also carpeted and have built-in robes and fan lights. The kitchen, with stainless-steel appliances and fantastic storage, including the walk-in pantry, looks over the tiled meals area and lounge area beyond. A dual gas fireplace offers heat to the meals area and a carpeted living area. Outside is the large undercover alfresco and generous lawn. An alarm, double garage with internal and external access and high ceilings are extras. If location is important this one ticks the boxes – set opposite a park, replete with walking paths and fantastic kids’ play equipment.

On about 2.3 hectares, 10 minutes south of Melton, this smartly presented residence couples with a fab man cave and a horse paddock with a shelter to deliver a great family lifestyle in a sought-after area. Through automatic gates and beyond a circular driveway, the house has entry under a lace-trimmed verandah to a slate-tiled foyer. Bevel-paned french doors on the right lead to a lounge room with a bay window dressed in holland blinds, a wood heater and new plush grey carpet, the same as laid in bedrooms.
Other french doors link the lounge room with the slate-tiled living hub, where the new kitchen puts on a fine show. It has a Caesarstone waterfall bench under a trio of pendants, lots of cream 2pac cupboards, grey glass splashback, a step-in pantry, dual-drawer dishwasher and a 900mm cooker. An island wall bisects dining and family areas and a split-system keeps things seasonally comfy; evaporative cooling is also included. A clever study nook is fitted with 2pac cabinetry. A slate-tiled hallway leads from the
dining area, along which are two fitted bedrooms, laundry with french-door closet, separate toilet and main bathroom with white subway tiling topped with rosy capping tiles. The main bedroom, at the opposite end of the house, has a walk-in robe and sparkling en suite. Out back, a full-length covered pergola – with brick paving underfoot – widens at each end to create three zones, one of which is accessible via french doors from a double garage with a wall of built-in closets. The other end is fenced off, so

perfect for adding a spa. At the bottom of a supremely low-maintenance garden, under the shelter of a giant gum, is the man cave. It has carpet, TV connection, a split-system and a rustic timber-and-iron bar. It also has a wall of bifolds so it can be opened up when entertaining, and could also be used as a great gym, office or teen retreat. A 6 x 9-metre Colorbond shed with power connected is the finishing touch to a desirable property. Carole Levy 23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 17, 2018

SPORT Burras four sore again By Tara Murray For the second time this season, Diggers Rest has been left to rue what might have been against Rupertswood in the Riddell District Football League. After losing to the Sharks by four points earlier in the season, the Burras suffered the same fate on Saturday. A poor second quarter left the Burras chasing. They hit the front in both the third and fourth quarters, but eventually fell short as the Sharks won 13.8 (86)-12.10 (82). Burras coach Jamie Lobb said a slow start had been costly. The Burras had plenty of inside 50 opportunities, but weren’t able to make the most of them. “Obviously, we had a slow start to the game and didn’t give ourselves a chance,” Lobb said. “It goes to show that we can’t switch off – it’s going to cost you games of footy.” Lobb said the third quarter provided a much better picture of how well the Burras can play, but they were struggling to deliver for four full quarters. Lachlan Langford and Josh Wallace kicked three goals apiece for the Burras. Lobb said Taylor Hine was brilliant down back, Jesse Flannery performed as he had been doing all season and Matthew Krul was really good playing ruck for most of the game. Regular ruckman Sean Egan could miss a couple of weeks after not getting through the game with a leg injury. “Sean was a bit sore last week and we rolled the dice and played him,” Lobb said. “He got through a little bit of the game, but was sore in the end. We’ll freshen him up the next week or two and get him right for finals.” Lobb said they were still missing five or six from their best side and there had been a few late withdrawals due to illness. The Burras remain in fifth but have played one less game than the top four sides. Lobb said it was a matter of making sure they kept winning. “We have to win every game now to try and finish as high as we can,” he said. “Hopefully, a few other results will go our way.” In other results, Melton Centrals produced the upset of the round by beating Woodend-Hesket 14.11 (95)-7.8 (50). Dylan Weir kicked five goals, with Jarrod Johns named Centrals best. Centrals are eighth, two games outside the top six. Rockbank suffered a big loss to Romsey. Romsey was out of the blocks early and the Rams never recovered, with the Redbacks winning 23.30 (168)-4.2 (26).

Premier Cricket
Melton will no longer have a team in the Victorian Premier Cricket Women’s competition. The Lions had been competing in the seconds, but a restructure means that competition will no longer exist. Under the changes, eight teams will field first and second XI sides, while Melton, Coburg and Brighton Districts will participate in an expanded Women’s Community Cricket competition.

The Riddell District Football Netball League grand final day will be held at Clarke Oval this year. The league announced last week it had moved the last day of the season from Romsey Park, where it had been held in the past four years. League operations manager Jordan Doyle said the clubs expressed a desire to have grand final day at a neutral ground. All the other finals will be played at either Clarke Oval or Romsey Park.
Netball
Rockbank has nearly claimed another scalp in the Riddell District Netball League. The Rams pushed fifth-placed Romsey all the way, falling just short at 43-41. An undermanned Diggers Rest proved no match for Rupertswood, losing 50-29, while Melton Centrals were upset by Woodend-Hesket 42-38.
Big V basketball
Melton Thoroughbreds had no trouble downing North East Blaze in Big V men’s division 2. The Thoroughbreds won every quarter by at least eight points on their way to the 100-51 win. The night featured the club’s initiative to raise awareness of youth homelessness and family violence. For more on the night, go to starweekly. com.au/sports.

Scrappy Stallions make it five on the trot Spring Hills made it five wins in a row with a hard-fought win against Golden Plains in FFV state league 4 west soccer. It wasn’t the Stallions best performance, but they did enough to grab a 2-1 win. Stallions team manager Joe Febbraio said they would take the win, especially knowing they didn’t play their best. “It was a pretty tough one,” he said. “The performance wasn’t in line with the way we had been playing the last four rounds. “Golden Plains is better than their position on the ladder. Even though we beat them 5-1 last time, they were 1-0 up before they had a player sent off.” The Stallions started the better of the two teams and were 2-0 early on before Golden Plains got one back before half-time. Golden Plains continued to attack, but couldn’t find an equaliser as the Stallion defence held strong.

Netballers tackle tough season with winning mindset Darley is hoping to finish a tough season on a high in the Ballarat Netball League. Having set out at the start of the season to rise up the ladder, the Devils have notched up just a single win. Devils netball co-ordinator Marika Barnes said a tough season has been made harder by injuries. “Mel Freeman has only just come back in, Courtney [Barnes] is out injured now,” Barnes said. “We’re also had a couple of ankles and Brianna [Rizzato] has been overseas for a month. “It’s been an ordinary year, but that’s just life.” The Devils also parted ways with coach Chris Bandel midway through the season. Barnes said they had been on the up since playing co-coaches Talei Bari and Amy Giaini took over. They both play in the mid-court in the A-grade side and have a lot of experience. “They have been fantastic and helped get the girls back on track,” Barnes said.
Bari, who won the leagues’s best and fairest award in 2012 and spent time at the Melbourne Vixens, is one of two former players who have returned to help out. Eylce Carlyle is the other. Barnes said they were having a massive impact on and off the court. “I asked them to come back when we had a couple of injuries,” Barnes said. “They bring a lot of experience. “The margins are getting lower. Against North Ballarat City, we had a great game and they helped reduce the margin.” Barnes said the club had continued to give some of the younger players opportunities, while focusing on playing local players not bringing in others from outside. She said with six rounds to go, the Devils were hopeful of getting a few wins in the run home. It’s not all bad news for the Devils with their D-grade side sitting in the top six. On Saturday, the A-grade Devils lost to arch-rival Bacchus Marsh 65-48. The Devils
kept the pressure on their opposition all day, but the Cobras were able to blow the margin out late. Melanie Freeman, who shot 31 goals from 39 attempts, was named the Devils’ best, along with Tarni Lopes and Giaini. For the Cobras, Stacey Jeffrey shot 33 goals and Madeline Hodgson 32. Kaila Ingham was named their best. The Cobras have moved up to third on the ladder. In other results, Melton South lost to ladder-leaders Sunbury Lions 49-39. Melton was no match for Redan, which won 56-37. Tara Murray

Devils on song in derby By Tara Murray Darley has grabbed bragging rights over local rival Bacchus Marsh yet again in the Ballarat Football League. The Devils, who have been up and down at times this season, pulled off the upset on Saturday to record their fourth straight win against the Cobras. The Devils set the win up in the first half, when they kicked eight goals to four. After half-time it was closer, but the Devils had done enough to win 14.7 (91)-9.14 (68). Devils football manager Craig Baker said it was a terrific result considering Darley was undermanned. He said coach Heath Scotland allocated jobs to certain players before the game, with their success going a long way to securing the win. Four Darley backmen were given the toughest tasks. Darren Leonard got moved into the ruck and did battle with the in-form Daniel Burton. Burton was named the Cobras’ best, but Leonard did the job asked of him. Jackson Carrick, Jacob Zeestraten and Rhys Ellis took on the Cobras’ three key forwards. Carrick and Zeestraten kept their opponents to one goal each and were named in the Devils’ best. Baker said those two, along with Steven Kennedy, who was the best midfielder on the ground, were the Devils’ standouts. The win moves the Devils to third on the ladder, one game behind the Cobras. But the Devils are only a game ahead of eighth-placed Sebastopol. Baker said there was a lot of work ahead for the Devils leading up to finals. “We’ve beaten Bacchus Marsh and North Ballarat City in the last few weeks,” he said. “But we still have to play Sunbury, North Ballarat City, East Point and Lake Wendouree. “It’s a tough run home. “The place to finish the last few years has been third. “I think this year will be different. The team that finishes sixth will give you a run for the money.” Baker said it was likely to be a few weeks before they got back any of their wounded warriors. “Maybe after the Lake Wendouree game we’ll get back Heath [Scotland] and Matt Young,” he said. “Brian Graham and Dylan Reid won’t be back until later in the year.” Saturday’s defeat means the Cobras slip from first to second. Joining Burton as standouts for the Cobras were Jake Owen, who kicked four goals, and Trent Angwin. In other results, Melton South pushed the

Darley appeals melee decision The Ballarat Football League has concluded its investigation into a post-match incident that occurred after Darley’s win against North Ballarat City on June 30. The league initiated the investigation, following a post-game melee that involved some Darley officials, players and supporters. No one from North Ballarat City was involved. A statement on Darley’s Facebook page last Wednesday said coach Heath Scotland and ruckman Abe Kur were both referred to the tribunal following their involvement in the melee. Both pleaded guilty to being involved in a melee and were handed reprimands following a hearing last Monday night. Kur was also charged with kneeing a spectator during the melee and received a two-match suspension. The Devils have appealed that decision to the Victorian Country Football League independent tribunal. Devils acting president Mark Shelly said they were appealing both the verdict and penalty. He said while they had been hopeful of getting the hearing heard last week, it will now be heard this week. The suspension would put Kur on 16 matches suspended. Under AFL Victoria rules, a player with 16 games suspended “shall be automatically deregistered and not allowed further registration with the same or another club or league”. Shelly said at this stage they were just concerned about appealing the two-match suspension. The league handed down its sanctions for the club on Thursday. The club has already banned some of the spectators involved, while president Ray Newton has been stood down. The league’s board endorsed the suspension of Newton, who can’t hold an official role for the rest of the season. The league has handed out life bans to four Darley supporters, with the supporters unable to attend any Ballarat FNL matches. The league is still trying to track down one supporter involved in the melee. Darley has been issued with a $5000 fine. Sessions to help committee members and coaches deal with conflict resolution will be held, while the club has to host a code of conduct session for all members. BEN WILLS, SALES CONSULTANT, ELECTRICAL Which team do you support? My father comes from Salford, a town just out of Manchester, so we both support Manchester United in the EPL. I always watched matches as a kid with Dad and played for 10 years with Castlemaine FC. I’m a big football fan and follow it closely. Who is your favourite player and why? Wayne Rooney, who has played with Everton and now ManU. He’s the same age as me. He came from a small club and made a big impact. His was the most expensive transfer in the early 2000s and he’s the highest goalscorer for England and ManU. How did you get interested in football? It started in childhood, but I got a renewed love for the international game when I worked in a backpackers hostel in Melbourne’s CBD in my early 20s. I met heaps of people from all over Europe who were mad keen on football and my fandom got a whole new lease on life. Now I’m a full-on supporter. Which team do you think will win this year? France. Their first team is full of superstars such as Pogba, Griezmann and Martial. France is so strong it’s been said they could field a first team from the bench. Their stamina and cardio capacity will set up France for a win.

France wins World Cup thriller By Ben McKay The French were dancing in the Moscow rain after they became World Cup champions for a second time with a 4-2 defeat of Croatia. France is rejoicing in a new generation of footballing heroes after Les Bleus defeated Croatia 4-2 in a stunning World Cup final success in Moscow. Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba fired France to their second World Cup triumph on Sunday at the Luzhniki Stadium, 20 years after their first win on home soil. The most celebrated tournament in a generation enjoyed the highest-scoring decider since 1966. Much like the past month, the final had everything. Amid the Parisian next-gen pair’s fine goals and Ivan Perisic’s thunderbolt, there was a first own goal in 21 finals, a VAR-confirmed penalty and a goalkeeping blunder that handed Croatia a late lifeline. Crashes of thunder and the occasional downpour only added to the biggest occasion in world sport. Even notorious artist-activist group Pussy Riot got in on the act, stopping play in the second half with a pitch invasion to protest political repression in host nation Russia. But at full-time, it was the French players who were joyously running laps of the pitch, tricolour in hand. On this evidence and the youth of the swashbuckling French champions, this side just might dominate international football for years to come. French coach Didier Deschamps proclaimed: “How marvellous!”
France celebrates World Cup glory in Moscow. (Igor Kralj/PIXSELL)
“We did not play a huge game but we showed mental quality,” he said. “And we scored four goals anyway. We are proud to be French, to be Bleus … vive le Republic!” Led by a man-of-the-match performance by Antoine Griezmann, France weathered early Croatian attacks to score with their first effort. Griezmann sent a free kick, dubiously won, into no-man’s land on 18 minutes, with Mario Mandzukic glancing into the net for an own goal. Perisic responded for Croatia soon after, winning a free kick he would score from.
Indefatigable Luka Modric’s floated set piece could not be cleared and fell to the left winger, who turned N’Golo Kante on the edge of the box to thrash the ball home with a slight deflection from Raphael Varane. The star Croatian turned villain 10 minutes later, handballing clumsily in the box for a penalty referee Nestor Pintana awarded after video assistance. Griezmann made no mistake from the spot for his fourth goal of the campaign. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic couldn’t abide the decision, although he said he respected it.
“In a World Cup final you do not give such a penalty, but it in no way diminishes France’s win,” he said. In the 20 minutes after the break, France became world champion. Mbappe showed his deadly pace in a right-wing breakaway, pulling back for Griezmann who found Pogba to score on his second attempt. Then came the 19-year-old’s moment as he followed Pele to become just the second teenager to score in a World Cup final. Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic couldn’t save Mbappe’s effort as France steamrolled the underdogs. Despite going the distance to defeat Denmark, hosts Russia and England through the knockout stage, Croatia had a foothold on another startling recovery on 68 minutes. French captain Hugo Lloris attempted to turn Mandzukic, but the striker stopped him in his tracks and deflected the ball into the goal to make the score 4-2. But when Croatia needed to find another gear in the final 20 minutes, the task was simply too tough. Russia president Vladimir Putin and FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino presented the victorious French with their medals in torrential rain. The trophy was next before the players celebrated. The victory makes Deschamps, captain of the France’s victorious 1998 side, the third man to win the World Cup as player and coach after Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer. Midfield powerhouse Modric was named as the tournament’s best player after the match, and awarded the Golden Ball. The dynamic Mbappe picked up FIFA Young Player award.
