Avenue elms celebrated Thousands of handmade poppies will adorn the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour to commemorate the centenary of its planting. Locals have been busy knitting and crocheting the poppies for the past few years. At a procession service on Sunday, August 11, a bugle will be sounded before poppy wreaths are laid under the 281 elm trees. The ceremony will also involve the Creswick RSL Light Horse Troop and a plane flyover, with official presentations to be held at Bacchus Marsh public hall. Bacchus Marsh RSL president Cherrison Lawton said family members of about 100 World War I service men and women commemorated at the Avenue of Honour would join the service to lay the wreaths. School children will lay the remainder. “I feel so honoured and privileged to be able to help organise this for the 100-year celebrations,” Ms Lawton said. “The community has really come together to make this possible.” The event will start about noon at the eastern end of the Avenue of Honour. Ballan station overhauled By Sumeyya Ilanbey Rail tracks will be duplicated and extra carpark space built as part of a multi-million dollar facelift to Ballan train station. A second platform will be built at the station as part of stage one of the Ballarat railway line upgrades. Other upgrades include a pedestrian overpass, a new bus layout, bicycle storage and ramps and lifts for disabled access. A 4.5 kilometre passing loop will be built from west of the Ingliston Road level crossing towards Old Melbourne Road. Work should begin in coming months and
are expected to finish next year. Improved security, lighting and landscaping will form part of the major overhaul. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the revamp, announced last Thursday, would respect Ballan station’s heritage aesthetic. “Following a lot of consultation with the local community, [we’re] recognising that there are some wonderful heritage aspects at Ballan that we want to protect and preserve,’ she said. “But [we need to] ensure we’re putting in the modern features that we need for more and more passengers here in Ballan to use the train services.”
infocus T U R N T O
The Ballarat line has been plagued with reliability issues and V/Line has been unable to meet its performance targets for almost two years. Ms Allan said the upgrades would help relieve congestion on the mostly single-track line. “We’re working very hard right now to improve our performance,” Ms Allan said. “A big part of it is making the big infrastructure improvements … we have to address those choke points on the Ballarat line.” Public Transport Users Association
PA G E 1 9
spokesman Ben Lever said he was pleased the upgrades included duplicating the tracks at Ballan. “At the moment, the line is mostly single track,” Mr Lever said. “This means that there isn’t much capacity to run trains. If one train is delayed, the other will also be delayed.” Rail Projects Victoria is seeking community feedback on tree planting and landscaping around the station. Brazen thieves lop trees By Sumeyya Ilanbey Eight river red gum trees have been illegally cut down and stolen from the Melton Reservoir. Brookfield resident John Cameron noticed one of the trees had been cut down about two months ago. He alerted authorities, including Southern Rural Water which is responsible for maintaining the reservoir off Clarkes Road. Mr Cameron is urging residents to keep an eye out and protect this “beautiful” part of the municipality. “I first went out there and saw all the rubbish that’s been dumped and thought ‘look at this place – it’s turned to crap’,” Mr Cameron said. “Some of these gum trees must be 60 feet tall … you can see the treetops from the riverbanks, but they’re being destroyed.” Mr Cameron said he hoped public vigilance and awareness would deter the vandals from returning. Southern Rural Water west supply manager Ed Smith said staff visited the reservoir following Star Weekly’s inquiries and reported the incident to police. “Although this happened near a populated area, it is relatively secluded,” Mr Smith said. “It is also not near any of our infrastructure or assets, so it is not on regular inspection patrols. “We’re disappointed in the behaviour of a few people, especially given that these iconic trees provide habitat and shade, and have an important role in the biodiversity of our waterways.” Melton police Acting Sergeant Sallie Robinson said police regularly patrolled the area, particularly during the night shift. She reminded people that stealing trees from public land was a criminal offence which could result in charges and prosecution. Melton police: 9747 7999

Man ‘Tasered’ during assault A Kurunjang man who was assaulted during a violent home invasion in Kurunjang says he was ‘Tasered’ in the neck as a group of up to eight offenders were beating him “from all sides”. The man, who did not provide his name, said he was asleep when the gang stormed in the front door of his Bronton Close home about 1.45am Thursday and started to bash him. “I was asleep in the lounge room … the door got kicked in, I wasn’t ready,” he said. The group demanded cash and drugs before beating him, he said. “They kept battering me from all sides,” he said. The offenders are still on the run and police said they had no description of them. “Detectives believe parties may have been known to each other,” a spokesperson said. “The 22-year-old victim has declined to make a statement to police.” The victim said he had been ‘Tasered’ which gave him a “bit of a rev up”. “[They stole] a couple of hundred bucks, a couple of little valuable things.” The man’s father and partner were also at home. All three received minor injuries and were treated at the scene. On July 15, a 14-year-old Kurunjang boy was stabbed while walking near High Street in Melton. He was approached and assaulted by two unknown offenders.

Cash splash for health service By Sumeyya Ilanbey Djerriwarrh Health Services will expand its autism program and inpatient palliative care intake following a record funding boost. The state government announced last week DJHS would receive $48.62 million this financial year, up $4.78 million from the previous year. DJHS chief executive Belinda Scott welcomed the funding boost and said the continued investment was “another strong vote of confidence” in the organisation’s future.
“This additional state government funding will allow Djerriwarrh Health Services to significantly expand its autism program and inpatient palliative care, while also assisting our staff and volunteers to provide a better level of care for the rapidly growing communities of Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Caroline Springs,” Ms Scott said. While the organisation is still working on how the extra funding will be used to expand its autism services, it expects waiting times for families wanting to access services will be reduced and the number of autism assessments increased.
Meanwhile Djerriwarrh Health won’t benefit from state government legislation to be introduced next month to increase the number of nurses and midwives in hospitals. The legislation would cover staffing levels for palliative care, birthing suites and special care nurseries, as well as during peak times in emergency department resuscitation cubicles. The state government expects an additional 600 nurses and midwives to be employed in the state’s public hospitals following the changes. A state government spokesman said Djerriwarrh Health was already significantly
resourced. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the legislative changes would ensure better care for patients across Victoria . “We’re delivering billions of dollars in record funding to ensure our busiest hospitals can treat more patients faster – and closer to home,” Ms Hennessy said. “Our hard-working doctors and nurses go to work each day to protect us all when we need it. “We’re giving them the support they deserve by opening more beds and helping reduce wait time for surgery and emergency care.”
Nourishing the soul One of Sarah Nourish’s favourite things to do is to bake a birthday cake, knowing she can make someone’s special day even more special. The 25-year-old Melton woman has always loved baking and has fond memories of baking with her mum to create tasty treats. After leaving school at 17, Ms Nourish last year decided the time was right to get back to what she loved the most. She enrolled in Kangan Institute’s certificate III in retail baking and this month represented the institute at the Baking Association of Australia’s Geelong Baking Show. Coming third in the gateau category, Ms Nourish impressed the judges with her three-layer orange buttercream cake topped with candied oranges. “I felt pretty good about my cake, but didn’t think I’d get third place,” Ms Nourish says. “My teacher at Kangan’s favourite combination
is chocolate and orange, so I thought I’d do it for him.” Ms Nourish has hit the ground running with her baking adventure, already starting her own business, with plans to expand it. She says she wants to get a food van in the next year, baking and selling her goods at markets. “Baking is just my stress-reliever,” she says. “If anything’s going on, I know I can bake and it just makes me really happy.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

New recruit all fired up
Mixed bag on Ballarat line
By Sumeyya Ilanbey After 19 years in retail, Holly Scoble knew it was time for a career change. Ms Scoble is one of the Country Fire Authority’s newest recruits, after graduating last month. She’s since been deployed to the Caroline Springs fire station, and is one of only three female CFA members at the station. She was also one of only three women to graduate from the Victorian Emergency Management Training Complex this year.

A career as a firefighter is enormously exciting and - Steve Warrington rewarding
’’
Ms Scoble said after a long career in retail, she decided she needed a new challenge to stimulate her physically and mentally. “I’ve got family in the CFA so it was something familiar to me,” Ms Scoble said. “I’m aware of the great culture that comes with the CFA. I’ve just finished my eighth shift [last Thursday] and it’s been amazing; it’s been really good.” Her first few weeks have been relatively quiet. Other than the few odd jobs, including a house fire, Ms Scoble has been busy doing the “background” duties – maintaining the equipment and trucks and cleaning. “Basically the things that people don’t see that happens in the background,” she says. Ms Scoble is committed to getting her head down and working to be the best firefighter she can be. And what does that involve? “Being determined, resilient, a real team player, and respectful,” she said.

CFA chief officer Steve Warrington congratulated the 30 new recruits on completing their 20-week “rigorous” program that involved fire training, learning how to respond to rescues, and managing hazardous materials. “A career as a firefighter is an enormously

exciting and rewarding career,” Mr Warrington said. “It involves much more than fighting fires – we respond to medical emergencies; are involved in the state’s emergency planning; and educate the community on how to keep their homes safe.”
V/Line’s daily performance on the Ballarat railway line is improving, though train and signal faults caused major disruptions last month. A train fault between Parwan loop and Bacchus Marsh on June 29 caused significant delays to morning peak services, stretching into the afternoon. The V/Line’s Ballarat Twitter team tweeted at 6.24am on June 29 that delays were expected due to a train fault, with several subsequent tweets warning passengers about further delays due to train and track faults, track congestion, driver training, maintenance requirements and speed restrictions. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said the Ballarat line upgrade, once completed, would help services recover better from unplanned disruptions. “The recent disruptions demonstrate just how important the Ballarat line upgrade is for reliability and better services to Ballarat,” he said. “This project will deliver more services, improve reliability and the sections of the duplicated track and passing loops will also help us recover more quickly.” Public Transport Victoria’s performance results reveal 82.5 per cent of services on the Ballarat line arrived at their destination on time last month. Punctuality on the line has improved, compared to May, up five percentage points to 77.4 per cent; and reliability is 97.6 per cent, up three percentage points. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Club makes a splash In 1978, a group of Melton parents tired of the daily travel to get their children to swim training took matters into their own hands and the Melton Swimming Club was born. Forty years later, the club is going stronger than ever and has about 100 members. It kicked off 40th anniversary celebrations during a presentation night earlier this month and another big night is planned for November. Club secretary Julie Walsh, who joined the club as a swimmer in 1978, said the sport has changed tremendously over the years, but the club’s family-friendly atmosphere remained
the same. When the club began, swimmers only trained twice a week from November to April, and competed against three other clubs – Woodend, Gisborne and Sunbury. These days, some of the club’s swimmers can train up to 20 hours a week and have competed at international events. “We’re like an extended family – the coach has been with us for 27 years so he’s like the grandpa of the kids,” Ms Walsh said. Melton West crop house busted By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton police seized more than 25 kilograms of cannabis from a Melton West crop house last week. Neighbours reported three suspicious men leaving the rental property about 8am on Tuesday, July 17, suspecting the house had been burgled. When police arrived, they discovered cannabis being cultivated in two of the four rooms. Detective Senior Constable Heath Davidson said police suspected half the crop – about 100
mature plants – had already been removed. The property had been rented for the past year, with the last real estate agent inspection in December. Police suspect thousands of dollars of damage, including water damage, has been caused to the property. Senior Detective Davidson said electricity connections to the property had used dangerous bypasses. “Powercor said they’d not seen anything like this,” Detective Senior Constable Davidson said. He said one bypass was from the meter and

another connected straight into the power pit at the front corner of the property. “That’s very dangerous – no one in their right mind would do that,” he said. Police are looking for three men wearing work and hi-vis clothing who were seen leaving the property last Tuesday. Detective Senior Constable Davidson said
police generally located crop houses thanks to public help. He urged residents to be vigilant and report suspicious behaviour to police. “If there’s an unusual smell, unusually bright lights, windows covered all the time, unkempt yards that are not cared for … and people coming and going for short periods every day or every other day,” Detective Senior Constable said. Anyone with information about the Melton West property, or to report a suspected crop house, is being urged to contact Melton police on 9747 7999.
Call-out for SES Nicolas Gargalakos “gets a kick” out of helping Melton residents as a local State Emergency Services member. He joined the SES 10 years ago to give back to his community and stayed. “[I enjoy] the way we come together as a team and are able to help the community at large,” Mr Gargalakos said. “It’s quite rewarding – it’s a volunteer service, but we get a kick out of helping people.” Mr Gargalakos is hoping other Melton residents will join him. Melton SES will open its doors to the public on Friday, providing opportunities for people to ask questions about the SES and equipment – and maybe even sign up as volunteers. Ten people joined as volunteers at last year’s open day and Mr Gargalakos is hoping for similar numbers this year. “Melton is growing quite substantially,”
he said. “We need more members to be able to cater for the new houses and population.” The SES responds to storm damage and search and rescues, and assists other emergency services, such as police and firefighters. The open day, on Friday, July 27, will run from 9am-2pm at the Melton SES, 90-92 High Street. Details: 0418 526 573 Sumeyya Ilanbey

Police go back to school By Sumeyya Ilanbey Local police will be cracking down on traffic offences near Melton and Caroline Springs schools. School crossings on Bulmans Road, Melton West and Wilson Road, Melton South will be targeted on August 22 and 28. Police will extend their operation to Community Hub, Hillside and Hume Drive, Caroline Springs on August 15 and August 21. The roads have been identified by Melton council as being “of particular concern” where there have been several near-misses.
’’
- Dave Sanders
Caroline Springs Sergeant Dave Sanders is urging all drivers to be extra vigilant near schools and to heed traffic laws. Police will focus on speeding, mobile phone use, and seatbelt and parking offences. “People are just parking wherever they want,” Sergeant Sanders said. “They’re just pulling up in the middle of the road, double-parking, in no-standing zones. Just lots of general parking issues.” But of particular concern to police is drivers speeding in school zones, where the speed limit is 40km/h. Sergeant Sanders said there were lots of vulnerable people, including young children and parents with prams, crossing the road, and urged drivers to be more cautious and heed the speed limits. “We want to protect these young people that might not have good road awareness as older

people; we’re trying to look after them.” Once the operation is finished, police will speak with Melton council about its effectiveness with possible plans to expand to more locations. Drivers can be fined hundreds of dollars, and
lose several demerit points, depending on the offence. Sergeant Sanders said using phones while driving can incur a $484 fine and four demerit points, while speeding less than 10km/h over the limit can cost $200 and one demerit point.
Youth mental health drive Melton and Bacchus Marsh youth with “complex” mental health needs can look forward to accessing services without leaving the region. Community health service providers, including Djerriwarrh Health Services, have teamed up to find ways to provide better and more tailored services to young people with mental illnesses. The project is being lead by youth mental health service provider Orygen and will involve discussions with local youth, their families and health services to find out what the gaps are and what can be done to improve quality of life for young people living in Macedon Ranges, Sunbury, Melton and Bacchus Marsh. It is hoped the project will identify what each of the four regions needs and what their capacities to deliver services are. The initiative has a $1.78 million budget from North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network. Orygen clinical programs director Liz Burgat said the outer suburbs were generally under-resourced and weren’t able to deliver all the appropriate services for young people living with mental health issues. “If young people need to travel a long way to get services, it makes it harder for them,” Ms Burgat said. “The cost of travel can sometimes be a barrier if they can’t easily get public transport or drive there. We want to make it easier for young people.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Pies shed poker machine venues The Collingwood Football Club is leaving the poker machine industry, confirming it has sold its Caroline Springs and Ringwood venues. Melbourne Racing Club bought the licences for The Club in Caroline Springs and The Coach and Horses in Ringwood, taking over 156 gaming machines. Settlement is expected to take place some time between October and December. Collingwood is the second AFL club to leave gaming with the Melbourne and Geelong clubs set to follow suit. Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman Stephen Mayne said the pressure to move on from poker machines was now on Essendon, which is negotiating with Melton council to extend its lease of the Melton Country Club. “This is a very potent statement from Collingwood,” Mr Mayne said. “An iconic institution is telling the community they no longer wish to be associated with the toxic pokies … there will be a domino effect.” The Club will continue operating as a poker machine venue, but Mr Mayne said Collingwood’s decision was sending a strong message to the community and could have statewide implications. Collingwood president Eddie McGuire described the move as “prudent”, and one that would allow the club to look at new revenue streams.

“The forensic review of the entire Collingwood operation last year, and the ‘Forever’ blueprint which came out of it, gave us greater clarity and a renewed sense of purpose but also identified numerous opportunities,” Mr McGuire said. “The decision of the board to sell our gaming operation and some of our hospitality interests will allow us to intensify the focus on our core responsibilities – Collingwood fans, elite sporting performance and community – but also enable us to pursue new and different possibilities for growth.

Two Melton teenagers have been handed new bikes thanks to an innovative justice department program. Offenders on community corrections orders have been busy repairing and upgrading bikes as part of Fix the Cycle, with about 175 bikes donated to Melton and Brimbank police stations to be given to young people in need. Caroline Springs Sergeant Rob Dampier said the project was a great way of upcycling bikes that had been lost or stolen. Police have also received donations of refurbished bikes, with one man donating 50.

“It’s a win-win situation,” Sergeant Dampier said. “Every kid needs a bike – it’s part of the Australian way … it gets them out, gets them fresh air, exercise, mobility. There’s no downside to this.” The Melton teenagers were also given safety kits, including helmets, and had a chat with police about bike safety. Diggers Rest lights up There will be more evening training at Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve thanks to much-needed lighting upgrades. Melton council has received a $100,000 state government grant, which it will match, to install lights at the reserve. At the moment, Diggers Rest Football Netball Club can only use one of the two ovals to train in the evenings which often means cramming up to four teams on a pitch. Club president Ben Morse said he started at the club more than 10 years ago, and it was an issue back then. “We can’t use the front oval for training past 6pm,” Mr Morse said. “We can now open up an entire ground to use for training … It gives us more opportunities
for players to train and spread the teams over two grounds.” Sports Minister John Eren said the funding would “go a long way” to keep up with growing demand for grassroots sports. “Netball and football clubs are the heart and soul of our communities,” Mr Eren said. “Unfortunately the Diggers Rest footballers … are struggling with facilities.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said the current lighting posed “significant challenges”. “[Last week’s] funding announcement will provide a wonderful outcome for the club, who have demonstrated steady growth over recent years,” Cr Turner said. MY PLACE Peter Asi is commUnity Plus’s skills reconnect coach, helping people get formal education, training or work. He speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey.
What’s your connection to Melton? I’ve been living here for seven years. We moved from Auckland, New Zealand. My wife found out where my nephew [who was in Australia at the time] was staying and he happened to be in Melton, so we thought we’d move here to be close to him. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? I have a joke with everyone who comes to visit us that Melton is so easy to get around – it’s just a big square with lots of roundabouts. So, the ease of accessibility.
(Joe Mastroianni)
What would you change about the area if you could? The area we’re living in at the moment – Melton South – we like it. It’s friendly, safe and quiet. Maybe if we had more industries, manufacturers, factories that people can work in. I think it’s important because, just by looking at how Melton has grown in the last 10 years and how there are new houses and estates going around still, people need jobs. It’s OK to bring a lot of people, but there aren’t a lot of jobs.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? My family and I quite like going to the Melton Country Club. We go every fortnight for the steak night when kids eat free. It’s become a bit of a tradition for us. For the price you pay, you get a massive steak, chips and a good side of greens – it’s great money’s worth. How did you get involved with commUnity Plus?
NEWS
Now that my eyes have opened up, I’ve realised education is a very important tool and opens so many doors for you. And I want to help other people get this opportunity and give back to the community in this way. Do you have any advice for young people who are about to finish school or have just finished school? Listen to your careers counsellor, listen to professionals who want to help you. There are different pathways available to different people.
The way I got my foot in the door in commUnity Plus was through Combined Churches Caring Melton, and that sort of set the platform for me to be able to work at commUnity Plus. My wife’s cousin got a job with commUnity Plus in Footscray and the manager said they were looking for someone for the Melton office. So it was through word-of-mouth that I found out about this particular job. I wanted to go to university but I never had the belief I could go to university. I guess because I didn’t do well in school. Academically I put in a lot of effort but my maths and English were poor.
What are some of the inspiring things you’ve done or learned?
Why are you so passionate about helping others get into formal training or work?
If you’d like help with finding work or training, call Peter on 0437 585 079.
I’ve come to know that when you see people from the outside you’re quick to judge their capabilities. However, when you walk alongside them and hear their stories, they just need a bit of encouragement. You can see someone on the street [and think poorly of them] but they can be intelligent and have the capabilities to do something great. I’ve got a really strong passion for helping the growing Samoan community in Melton and helping out the youth and their families.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds an old favourite back with force Vietnamese tucker is pretty much the heart and soul of western suburbs food. Yet so deeply interwoven is it into all our lives, it’s a bit easy to take it for granted. Not that we don’t eat it regularly and even weekly. We do. But when it comes writing and posting about it, well not so much in recent times. So it gives me giddy pleasure to wax enthusiastically, passionately about Co Thu Quan. The original version of this eatery was tucked away in Little Saigon Market, becoming one of the victims of that institution’s sad, fiery demise. Now – after opening branches in Richmond and the CBD – they’re back! There have been changes. The original Co Thu Quan was all about snack-style street food. This new place, done out in dark wood and all abuzz with zippy, cheerful service, has a vastly expanded menu. Instead of light snacks there’s a plethora of noodles, salads, vermicelli, rice, soups and much, much more. And it’s all – or almost all – cheap, cheap, cheap. Think under $15. And while you can order pho here, there are so many other glittering, intriguing choices, it would be folly to do so. Here, by their many dozens, are dishes you’ll not find elsewhere in Footscray or the west.
CO THU QUAN Address: Shop 11-12, 10 Droop Street, Footscray Phone: 9689 1451 Hoi an chicken rice ($12) is a simple, light, refreshing and superbly enjoyable take on the universal chook/rice combo. There’s a lot more shredded chicken atop that rice than the photo suggests. Clear shrimp dumplings ($10) are wobbly parcels stuffed with shrimp and ground pork. They’re fun to eat, but a tad shy of the flavor explosions I was anticipating. Nat enjoys slurping on his water spinach crab noodles ($12). Immersed in its chicken broth and freshwater crab paste are rice noodles, pork and crab meatball, pork sausage, fried tofu, tomato, water spinach, congealed pork blood, topped with fried shallot and green onion; tamarind sauce on the side. For me, Vietnamese crab noodle soup is an uncharacteristically rash choice. It costs $27 – a ridiculous amount to pay for a single bowl of soup noodles. But I utterly adore it and have no regrets. Fresh crab of this quality is usually only consumed in communal settings, so I revel in my singular enjoyment of the chunky shellfish bits. But just as good is the hearty, delicious chook/crab soup in which the tapioca noodles, a single prawn and fresh mushrooms happily swim.
HOI AN CHICKEN RICE
We plan on spending much time in the rest of the year exploring Footscray Co Thu Quan and its exciting, inviting and extensive menu.

Take a crash course in auto repairs A
uto Passion is honest, helpful service No one wants to have a car accident. But if you do happen to get into a bingle, you want it fixed quickly and easily. However, sometimes, when it comes time to reach out to your insurance company, it isn’t always as straight forward as you’d expect. Vince Bartolo, who heads-up Auto Passion, says it is important to get acquainted with your car insurance policy to know what you’ve paid for, what you’re entitled to and also perhaps, what you haven’t. Vince says there are a few key points to check out before an accident so you are prepared and get full value-for money.
Agreed value of your vehicle
In the case of a write-off, some people have had their cars unintentionally valued far below the cost to replace their car. “If you do need to replace your vehicle, you don’t want to get caught with less than you need to replace your car, so make sure the agreed value is what you need it to be.
Extras
It is important to check for extras, says Vince, as often you are entitled to extras such as a replacement windscreen, and you aren’t even aware of it. “Sit down one evening with a cup of tea and really read your policy and you might be pleasantly surprised as to what you can claim,” he says. “Some insurers offer extras on policies such as hire car and roadside assist. It is
Really read your policy and you might be pleasantly surprised Vince Bartolo of Auto Passion. (Luke Hemer)
always best to ask when you’re considering a new insurer or current insurer.”
Preferred repairer
Surprisingly, it isn’t always possible to use the repairer of your choice. Extras such as a personalised, flexible service, or using a local repairer such as Auto Passion, who offer a replacement car during repairs and
of course that experience you only get from a family-owned and run business, is not always possible if you are locked into a policy with insurers recommended repairers. “Again, check to see if you can choose or if it’s locked in and consider who you want to deal with when your car is out of service,” Vince suggests. Vince is passionate about educating car
owners about their rights with regards to insurance to make the repair process a seamless and painless experience. “If you know what you are covered for, it takes away most of the stress.” Auto Passion, 12 Station Street, Bacchus Marsh. Inquiries: 5367 0117 or visit autopassion.com.au

He says it has played a role in the development of thousands of students and their families for the past 157 years. “We aim to inspire students to learn how to learn, to flourish, be innovative and aspire to futures that harness their many skills and abilities,” Dr Miller says. “But it’s not just the students who are learning; staff and parents also seek challenges and development here at college. “Our students learn to be respectful and courageous as they develop academic, emotional, physical, social and spiritual potential and prepare to be positive contributors to society through a broad range of learning experiences.” The Uniting Church day and boarding college has been coeducational since 1974, and is passionate about non-segregation. “Coeducation allows young men and women to learn how to learn and live together in a respectful environment. The real world is not segregated and, in coeducational schools, girls and boys work collaboratively, exchange ideas, learn from each other and develop greater understanding of self and others. “We seek to prepare students to be leaders who are able to connect the Christian faith, their personal spirituality and their planned contribution to our world.

The real world is not segregated... While we are a Christian school, Geelong College upholds the values of freedom and choice by respecting the rights of all people to live by other faith traditions.” The school, which began with just 62 students, now has 1400 students aged between three and 18, 100 of whom are boarders. It has two campuses in central Geelong, with strong links with coastal and rural areas.
The middle school (years 4-8) was revamped in 2012 and now, in response to demand, the junior school (early learning-year 3) is receiving a significant redevelopment. Dr Miller believes the school has a blueprint for shaping an exciting and productive future. “Our Vision for Learning establishes seven key learning dimensions: Identity, Creativity,
The Geelong College a leading Victorian day and boarding school. Since 1861 we have been educating thinkers, doers and leaders, with our eyes on the future, and grounded by long-established values. Auxiliary, Eileen Knight and Beryl Morgan, were presented with special awards to officially mark 30 years of outstanding volunteer service to Djerriwarrh Health Services - a combined total of more than 60 years of volunteering, a remarkable achievement.
ccording to the 2016 Australian Census, 3.6 million people in Australia above the age of 15 are engaged in volunteering through an organisation or group. Nowhere is this more evident than at Djerriwarrh Health Services, reports new chief executive Belinda Scott. “With 189 dedicated volunteers currently donating their time to the health service, the ongoing contribution of volunteers to Djerriwarrh is absolutely fundamental to ensuring high-quality service delivery continues for the local community,” Ms Scott says.
How do I become a Djerriwarrh Health Services volunteer? Djerriwarrh Health Services welcomes those keen to help their local community and have a willingness to learn new skills. Djerriwarrh volunteers invariably are enthusiastic, flexible, compassionate, patient and responsible people who are eager to make a difference.

The Djerriwarrh Health Services volunteer service awards recognised 14 volunteers with a cumulative total of 255 years of volunteer service. “The health service is indebted to its volunteers, as it would be unable to operate to its full potential without their continued selfless work and dedication,” Ms Scott says. “They play a vital role in the implementation and success of our programs across the health service. Get your fireplace glow on this winter W
inter time is biting – and it’s the busiest time of the year for Victorian Fireplaces owners Samantha and Christian Passauer. The best place in the west to get the very best in gas fireplace technology, Victorian Fireplaces is located in Hoppers Crossing and has a huge range of fireplaces ranging from ultra-modern to country styles, with a model for every budget.
We have it down to a fine art. We have the trades people and know-how to manage the entire project … and we have our own install team Samantha, the showroom manager, says the business has been consistently busy since the new showroom opened last year. “After 15 years, we have it down to a fine art,” she says. “We’re a great option for those who have always wanted a gas fireplace or have wanted to modernise an existing one yet don’t know where to start as we do everything. “We have the trades people and know-how to manage the entire project. We manage it from start to finish and we have our own install team.” The Victorian Fireplace efforts don’t simply finish with sales – the business provides comprehensive servicing to ensure maximum safety and efficiency. Samantha says the way to go about getting a gas fireplace is simply to visit the
Owner Chris Passauer (right) with sales manager Travis, installer and service technician Aaden and installer Craig.
Victorian Fireplaces showroom – which opened last year – on Elm Park Drive. “From there what usually happens is we get an idea about the room where you want to install it and discuss what models will suit best with regards to heat-per-metre, size and style. “Christian will then organise an installation quote. “Following that, after having seen the
property and the room, a final quote is created that takes into account things such as whether a surround needs to be built. And then we get busy installing it.” Fireplaces offer more than warmth – they deliver a cosy ambience and contemporary flair to any room and create a feeling of home, even in the most contemporary and modern of spaces. “Come in today and check out our

MELTON WEST 2 Rotarian Place, 3337 PRD Nationwide: 9747 6665
Price: $529,000
This Victoriana tribute on about 620 square metres is beautifully presented, with subtle Victorian flourishes inside, such as ceiling rosettes, corbels, period-style light fittings and switches and lace-dressed bay windows in main bedroom and lounge room. The latter also has a gas log fire with Victoria-style hearth tiles and an ornate surround. Parquetry floorboards begin in the entry hall, to the left of which is the open lounge room with soft-green carpet and the same warm-white wall paint as all through.

On the opposite side, there’s a study. An island wall ahead of the entry hall allows entry one side to the meals area and the other to the family sitting area, each also with the parquetry and Holland blinds behind lace curtains. The kitchen, with white cabinetry and mottled-grey laminate benches, has a french-door pantry, a servery bench, dishwasher and Westinghouse 900mm gas cooktop and wall oven. A floorboarded hallway heads from the family room to three fitted bedrooms,
each with soft-green carpet, as well as the sparkling main bathroom, separate toilet and the laundry with storage. The main bedroom has adjoining mirrored doors, behind which are a walk-in robe and a bright en suite. Ducted heating and evaporative cooling take care of temperature control, and there’s an alarm. The family room opens to a large, fully enclosed gabled pergola with herringbonepatterned pavers underfoot, plus two ceiling fans.

This all-seasons space adds considerably to the amenity of this place. There’s a spacious lawn and roses planted near the house; the rest is ready for more landscaping. Side gates open to a concrete parking area for trailer, boat or caravan, and the double garage has internal access. Three schools are four minutes or less away and Woodgrove Shopping Centre about five. Carole Levy 27 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 24, 2018

41 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 24, 2018
SPORT Windies recruit already making his mark at Darley New Darley signing Danza Hyatt could have Ballarat Cricket Association bowlers looking back over their heads this season. Hyatt, who played nine one-day internationals and five T20 matches for the West Indies, is expected to provide plenty of power at the top of the order for the Lions. Lions coach Michael Alexander said signing someone of Hyatt’s ability was exciting. It’ll be Hyatt’s second season in Australia. He played with Gisborne in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association last season. In five games for the club, Hyatt made 410 at an average of 102.50, including innings of 176 and 181 not out. “We’re excited to be able to get him across for this season,” Alexander said.
“One of our guys had some contact with him and he expressed a desire that he wanted to play turf cricket. He was impressed with our facilities.” Alexander said the club was looking for extra batting strength this season and expected Hyatt would fill that role. As well as playing for the Lions, Hyatt will be heavily involved in the coaching side of things. Alexander said it was exciting for the younger players to work with a player of Hyatt’s calibre. “He’ll be an assistant coach and our batting coach,” Alexander said. “He’ll also work with the junior kids. The club is fortunate that we have a good relationship between our juniors and seniors. “He’s already held a number of clinics and
some kids have already experienced working with him.” The signing of Hyatt goes part way to offsetting the departures of Sri Lankans Anurruda Rajapaksha and Roshan Anuruddha. Alexander said they were the only outs at this stage and the club was looking to add another player to the mix. “We’re looking to add one more bowler, but it’s been difficult finding the right fit,” he said. “An opening bowler would be nice.” The Lions will start pre-season later this month and will take a lot of motivation into the upcoming season. Last season, they finished fifth, one game outside the top four after having made the grand final the previous season.
Shock news for Sherlock By Tara Murray The football career of Bacchus Marsh captain Scott Sherlock has come to a shock end. The Ballarat Football League club announced last week that Sherlock was retiring immediately to undergo back surgery. Sherlock was as shocked as anyone about the diagnosis. While he had been battling back soreness for some time and missed the Cobras’ game against Darley, he didn’t expect such an outcome. “It’s not something you look forward to,” he said. “I had been playing in pain the last four games, the next day I was bed-ridden and couldn’t get around. “That’s not good for me or my family. I’m 28 now, there’s a lot more life to be lived.” Sherlock said his back issues began when he was a child. He said he had been to several different practitioners and they all said the same thing, that he could no longer play contact sport. Sherlock said the hardest thing was knowing that not only was he in really good form, but so was the team. Until last week, Sherlock was leading the Ballarat Courier player of the year award. “Bacchus Marsh is such a good club,” he said. “Until five weeks ago, I was feeling fine and in some really good form.” Sherlock will take on an assistant coaching role and said he would still be at every training session and game helping out. He said coaching was something he might consider in the future. Sherlock, who spent several years at Werribee in the VFL, said he was proud of what he had achieved. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said Sherlock had a huge influence in his one and half years at the club. “He only played about 20 games and his impact on field was enormous,” he said. “He won our best and fairest last year and was leading the league best and fairest until the last vote of the night. “He had gone to another level and was better this season. “There’s no doubt Scott is a loss on the field and in the leadership department.” Hodgson said with Sherlock’s absence, other players would get the opportunity to step up. He said how the players took on that challenge, would have a say on how far they go this season. He named Nicholas Stuhldreier, Harrison King and Jacob Chisari as players who might step up. Jackson Bolton, who finished third in the club’s best and fairest last year, returned via the reserves at the weekend for his first match of the year. Liam Mullen will captain the side for the rest of the season. 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 24, 2018
“From a club perspective, it was a good season,” Alexander said. “From a personal view, it was disappointing not to play in finals. That is the goal for this season. “We start back at the end of this month and we’re keen to get back into it and do the hard work and get back in finals.” The BCA competition is set to have a change of format, with three T20 rounds to be played for premiership points, along with one-dayers and two-dayers. Alexander said it was a move towards being more in line with how the Victorian Premier Cricket season was played. Tara Murray
Springers rock steady for the run home Caroline Springs’ men’s sides are on track to play finals for the first time in Hockey Victoria’s winter competition. In just the club’s second year, the men’s program has doubled in size and they are starting to see the results on the pitch. Springers coach David Gorton said it was exciting to see the pace of development this year. “We knew as a new club it was going to be tough,” he said. “We put in a beginners’ side last season. We had some quality players train with us over the off season and they have stayed. “We’ve now got 31 players from 16 last year and have two really strong sides and it puts us in a good spot.” The top side, men’s metro A north west, sits third. On Sunday they won 9-0 against La Trobe University. While the Springers’ strikers have regularly found the back of the net, it has been the defence which has been the standout, with the side conceding the least goals in the division. Gorton said they had a really strong side. “We have quality in all spots, including the bench, which we need to have as we have a high-tempo game,” he said. “It’s a major strength of the squad. We managed to attract some good quality players with Vic League experience. “They decided to jump on board early and get a spot to help push the team into being a force in the next few years.” Gorton said there was two other quality teams in the division, and on their day they could beat both of them. While a premiership would be good, Gorton said the main focus was to do enough to earn promotion into Vic League 3 as they look to move up the ranks and eventually into Premier League. The metro B West side is also in the top four. Gorton said the remaining rounds were about preparing for finals. “When we have a full complement anything can happen, especially come finals,” he said. “We’re settling down our squads in preparation.” All four senior sides look on track to play finals.

Fraser takes the next step in her hockey career Melton Hockey Club’s Charlotte Fraser had an absolute ball representing the North West Metro Tigers at the Haval Junior State Championships recently. Fraser was one of two Mustangs players selected in the Tigers squad for one of the biggest hockey events in the state. It’s a long way since she started at the Mustangs in the under-10 competition in 2014. Fraser currently combines playing in the Mustangs under-14 mixed team and playing in the club’s Vic League 2 team. She won the club’s most outstanding junior award last year and was runners-up in the under-12 best and fairest award. Hockey is in Fraser’s family, with her sisters Indiana and Amelia, and mum Melissa all playing, while her dad Robert is a coach at the club.
It was the first time Fraser has represented the Tigers and she was able to show both her defence and offensive skill-sets after spending six weeks training with the squad. It was a tough championships for the Tigers, which didn’t record a victory until the final day and eventually finished ninth. They lost both their opening day games, 1-0, but Fraser impressed with her defensive work. Her father Robert said she quickly gained the nickname “the wall”. Day two started the same way, with a 2-0 loss to North East Red Devils, before a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to South West Country Eagles, with the Eagles scoring in the final 90 seconds. Day three saw a couple more losses for the Tigers, as they still searched for their first goal of the tournament.
Keen to finish the championships on a high, the Tigers found another level on the final day of the competition. A goal early to Fraser in their match against North West Country Lightning, gave the Tigers same confidence. Fraser was called up from defence to take a penalty corner and she made it two goals for the side, when she scored from a second penalty corner. The Tigers continued to run in the second half, and Fraser scored a third goal in the 5-0 win. Meanwhile, it was a good weekend for the Mustangs’ women’s side, which won their first match of the season in Vic League 2. The Mustangs defeated Gippsland Bulls 4-1. Tara Murray

Bloods rise to derby challenge By Tara Murray Melton heads into its Ballarat Football League bye on the back of three straight wins and back in the top six. With little separating the top eight teams, every win is vital and none more for the Bloods than Saturday’s clash against arch rival Melton South. The Bloods looked to have gotten away from the Panthers in the first half before the margin was reduced early in the third quarter. The Bloods responded well to run away for a the 16.17 (113)-8.8 (56) win. Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said that although the Panthers had just one win for the season, they couldn’t be taken lightly. “We were really nervous Friday night,” he said. “So it was good to get away with that one. You never take them lightly.” Tymms said he was happy with how the side responded in the second half in the face of a Panther challenge. “They got back to two goals in the third quarter,” he said. “They had kicked three in a row … we responded in the last quarter and ran away with it. We’re starting to learn how to win these sort of games.” Darren Haby was named the Bloods’ best for a performance that included two goals and 15-odd marks. Tymms said ruckman Ben Archard was also good. He said the key to the victory was winning the contested ball, which had been a concern before the game.

For the Panthers, Dylan Conway kicked six goals in his return to the side after being dropped by VFL side Port Melbourne. But the Panthers were without acting captain Lachlan Watkins, who made his VFL debut for Coburg. The win moves the Bloods up to fifth as one of five teams sitting on 32 points. Just four points separate second and eighth. The Bloods have a bye this week before facing Sebastopol the week after. The Bloods’ most recent loss came against the eighth-placed Burras. Tymms said they were unsure whether the bye had come at a good time. “It will freshen us up a little bit with four more weeks to finals if we get there,” he said. “The Sebas game is really important for us.” Bacchus Marsh is back in the pack after a second straight loss. Having previously appeared to have a top two spot secured, the Cobras are now just one win clear of eighth. The Cobras lost to North Ballarat City 14.7 (91)-12.13 (85). Jake Owen and Aaron Willitts kicked three goals each for the Cobras, with Trent Angwin named their best. Darley is just percentage outside the top two after winning a thriller against Lake Wendouree. The Devils came from behind at three-quarter time to win 8.9 (57)-7.12 (54). Steven Kennedy was named best on ground. In good news for the Devils, Abraham Kur returned to the field after his two-game suspension for kneeing during a melee was overturned.
Melton sneaks up on finals Melton Thoroughbreds have all but wrapped up a finals spot in the Big V men’s division 2 competition. A win against Sherbrooke Suns on Saturday means the Thoroughbreds are two games and percentage ahead of seventh-placed Pakenham Warriors, which has an extra game to play. A win against Mildura Heat will ensure a finals spot. On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds put in a solid performance against the Suns. After trailing by two points at quarter-time, the Thoroughbreds took a two-point lead into half-time after a high-scoring second quarter. The third quarter was the Thoroughbreds’ best and they increased the margin to nine points. They finished it off in the last, winning 88-76.
The Thoroughbreds had plenty of scoring options, with four of the five starters and five players overall scoring double figures. Emmanuel Malou top-scored with 21 points, while also having 13 rebounds and four blocks. The Thoroughbreds’ women had a mixed weekend after two weeks off. They lost to North East Bushrangers on Saturday night 68-65, before a big win against Sherbrooke Suns on Sunday. On Saturday night, a slow start proved costly. The Thoroughbreds trailed by 12 points at quarter-time and never really got back into the game. On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds did all the damage in the third quarter, outscoring the Suns 31-8, before winning 93-65. Tara Murray 43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 24, 2018
