Fertile farming land in Melbourne’s outer suburbs is under threat from urban sprawl. And, according to a new report, if population continues to boom at its current pace, Melbourne’s foodbowl will no longer be able to feed the city. Bacchus Marsh-based farmer Nick Dellios says this close proximity of urban development to prime agricultural land is taking its toll on farmers. ■ Full story: Page 5

Starved pigs rescued Wildlife rescuers fear three pigs and a piglet found in the Wombat State Forest near Bullengarook last week had been dumped. Five Freedoms Animal Rescue’s Manfred Zabinskas came across two of the pigs while attending a call-out to help an injured joey on July 22. He said the pigs were “desperate for food” and in a horrible condition. Mr Zabinskas called his partner, Helen Round and asked her to bring food for the pigs, while he made arrangements for them to be

taken to animal sanctuary Edgar’s Mission to be treated and rehabilitated. A passing motorist alerted the couple to another pig and piglet he had found injured nearby. The sow had suffered a serious foot injury and was covered in blood and unable to stand. Ms Round said she was concerned the pigs had been neglected before being dumped. They were infested with mange, lice and ticks. “The were emaciated …” she said. “With the harsh weather they wouldn’t have survived [in the forest]. They would have died of exposure.”

CONCRETE, GARDEN SUPPLIES & SKIP HIRE

Ms Round said it wasn’t unusual to come across pigs in the forest, with people often dumping pigs there so they can be hunted later. However, she did not believe this was to be the fate of these pigs which she described as friendly. “There were lovely, friendly pigs and up for pats,” Ms Round said. “They were obviously loved by someone once before. “I want people to know that there are things you can do. You don’t have to dump them. The could have been handed over to the RSPCA.” Anyone with information about the pigs is urged to contact the RSPCA.

Green light for Eynesbury park By Laura Michell The long-awaited Eynesbury Recreation Reserve will become a reality after Melton council received more than $2.8 million in federal funding for the project. The federal government has provided the council with the funding as part of its Better Regions Fund, which provides grants for new infrastructure or upgrades to existing facilities. The council has also applied for $3 million from the state government’s Growing Suburbs

Fund to help with construction costs of the $8.5 million reserve. The Eynesbury Recreation Reserve will include an oval, recreational facilities, an adventure playground, barbecues and walking paths. It is anticipated the reserve will be used as a training facility for the growing Eynesbury football club. The reserve will be built in two stages, with stage one to include the oval and carpark. Stage two will deliver an additional oval,

Cr Turner said the council was working with developer Hyde Property Group to ensure the project could be delivered as soon as possible. The release of 40 new housing lots in Diggers Rest has been fast tracked by a developer to meet “increasing buyer demand”. AVID Property Group has brought forward the launch of the Flore neighbourhood at its Bloomdale estate with the release of 40 blocks. Once completed in 2024, Bloomdale will have 1600 houses. AVID state general manager Peter Vlitas said increasing numbers of people were flocking to the area. “Residential property demand is surging in the region and as prices continue to rise in the city, buyers are increasingly looking for affordable land options, particularly in growth hot spots like Diggers Rest,” Mr Vlitas said. “We have been overwhelmed by inquiry rates at Bloomdale so have made the decision to bring forward the release of our exciting new Flore neighbourhood, along with the first 40 blocks of land.” The median house price in Diggers Rest, $493,000, was almost half the median house prices in metropolitan Melbourne in the June quarter, according to Real Estate Institute of Victoria data. But prices in Diggers Rest are shooting up, with a 13.2 per cent growth recorded in the 12 months to June, 2018. Angela and Mitchell, who didn’t want their surnames published, bought a Bloomdae block earlier this year and are hoping to move in by December. Angela said they were looking for an affordable area. “With construction about to start on our home, we are getting pretty excited,” she said. “The whole neighbourhood has really grown on us.”

Expansion fuels foodbowl fears By Sumeyya Ilanbey Fertile farming land in Melbourne’s fringe is being threatened by high rates, expensive water and the relentless expansion of the urban growth boundary, a new report has warned. Melbourne’s foodbowl in Bacchus Marsh, Werribee South and the Mornington Peninsula currently has the capacity to meet 40 per cent of the city’s food needs, according to the report. But if the population continues to grow at its current rate, the capacity to feed the city will fall to 18 per cent by the time it reaches seven million people. Melbourne University researchers, who published the Food for Thought report earlier this month, are calling on the state government to protect farmland and water access close to the city. The researchers say the urban growth boundary has been extended three times since it was introduced in 2002, undermining signals sent by state governments to maintain the boundary and protect agricultural land. The report identified land banking – investors buying farming land and waiting for rezoning – as a major concern to farmers, along with subdivision of fertile land in Melbourne’s foodbowl leading to conflict between farmers and their non-farming neighbours. Moorabool council planning policies were singled out as ways to strengthen farmer confidence and protect farmland in Melbourne’s foodbowl. The shire has made clear, the report states, the need to direct urban development away

from farming areas and prevent subdivisions that lead to land fragmentation. Nick Dellios runs Dellios Apples, along the Avenue of Honour in Bacchus Marsh. The orchard farm has been around for the past 63 years, but Mr Dellios is concerned about the viability of farming on Melbourne’s fringe. High council rates for farmland, access to water and expensive land prices are pushing people away, he says. Mr Dellios says he’s struggling to use gas guns, to scare the birds away from his crops, because his non-farming neighbours complain about the noise. “Council needs clearer guidelines whether they want to stay farming or whether they want to have urban development,” Mr Dellios says. “There’s a lack of available [farming] land and the land that is available is very expensive … like it or not, the irrigation of water [in Melbourne’s fringe] is getting expensive, land is getting expensive and it’s got limited life as a farming area.” Mr Dellios thinks it’s only a matter of time before the area is zoned urban, given the track record of the boundary being expanded several times. Moorabool council chief executive Rob Croxford said the council was working to accommodate growth in urban development areas without adversely impacting farming land and to discourage rural land fragmentation. He said council officers worked closely with Southern Rural Water, Western Water and local farmers to protect the shire’s farmland.

Deaths prompt road upgrade call By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton and Wyndham councils will lobby the state government to upgrade the notorious Hopkins Road, where several people have died. Earlier this month, two children died following a head-on collision between a Ford Territory and Ford Focus on Hopkins Road. The latest fatality has prompted Melton council to urge VicRoads to commit to “significant” road upgrades on the deadly eight-kilometre stretch. The council wants the road to be widened, intersections upgraded,

lighting improved, and fixed speed cameras installed. The road is a major thoroughfare between Melton and Wyndham and connects to Derrimut Road in Tarneit. It has been the scene of one fatality, six serious injuries and 23 other injuries in the past five years. Wyndham council’s city economy, innovation and liveability acting director Melissa Falkenberg said the council had not contacted VicRoads about Hopkins Road but has raised similar issues about Derrimut Road.

“This [Hopkins Road-Derrimut Road] corridor connects with the Princes Highway and the Western Freeway,” Ms Falkenberg said. “As such, Wyndham city would support Melton council’s calls for upgrades to Hopkins Road. “Hopkins Road is a rural-standard road that is accommodating an increasing traffic demand. The point where Derrimut Road changes to Hopkins Road is carrying 18,000 vehicles per day, which means it is at capacity.” The speed limit along Derrimut and Hopkins roads was reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h

two years ago, and a number of improvements, including road resurfacing and new guard rail installation, have been carried out. VicRoads acting transport and planning director for the north-west Simon Basic said there were no plans to duplicate Derrimut and Hopkins roads between Dohertys Road and the Western Highway. “We’ve undertaken a number of safety improvements on Hopkins Road in recent years and continue to work closely with both Wyndham and Melton councils to determine the need for further upgrades,” he said.

Racing to find a cure Melton friends Maz Brown and Joe Cussen are revved up to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts. The duo, who’ve lost many family members to cancer, will be taking part in this year’s Shitbox Rally to raise money for the Cancer Council. They will be driving from Perth to Sydney, via Uluru, in May, 2019. Ms Brown says the duo will do the rally in honour of their fathers, who were both diagnosed with cancer. Ms Brown’s 64-year-old father Derick Robson is in remission after doctors found a carcinoma in his neck three years ago. Mr Cussen’s father, Donny Cussen, died in 1990 after battling lung cancer. “This is quite close to our hearts, and with my dad being a survivor [I’m doing it for him]. He’s my hero, he’s my inspiration and he’s my drive to do this,” Ms Brown says. “[His cancer diagnosis] was a big shock for

everyone. He was doing up his motorbike helmet and felt a lump under his chin, had it checked out and that’s when doctors said it was a carcinoma.” There’ll be plenty of opportunity to donate to Ms Brown and Mr Cussen, who are already planning ways to fundraise $20,000. The pair will drive a grey-coloured Ford Fairmont Ghia, which they’re hoping to pick up soon. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Wind farm to go on the quiet By Sumeyya Ilanbey Noise from one-third of the wind turbines at the Lal Lal Wind Farm will be controlled. The groundwork to build the turbines at Yendon and Elaine are under way, with construction to be completed by August next year. However, following a noise assessment by Lal Lal Wind Farms, 19 wind turbines will run in noise curtailment mode. The noise curtailment mode will be

configured depending on wind direction, wind speed and time of day. This criteria will be programmed into the wind turbine generator’s controller and automated. Lal Lal Wind Farm community engagement manager Tracey Ward said the decision to run some turbines in noise curtailment mode would have no impact on the construction timetable, and was routinely used on wind farms across the world. “The wind turbine generators (WTG) are designed to be safely operated,” Ms Ward said.

“The curtailment strategy to be used at the Lal Lal sites has been assessed by specialists and has been approved for use at the site. “The safe operation of the wind farm and overall safety of public and the workforce is the highest priority in designing any wind farm.” But Lal Lal Environment Protection Association president John McMahon said he was concerned about the automated nature of the curtailment mode. He told Star Weekly the community would be policing the noise. He said locals were

worried about how close the wind farm was to properties and the density of the turbines. Lal Lal Wind Farm’s planning permit includes strict guidelines on compliance, including requiring the operator to carry out noise compliance testing by an independent acoustic engineer. The noise limit is 40 decibels for 10 minutes, as outlined in the planning permit. Ms Ward reassured the community that Lal Lal Wind Farms would comply with all noise standards required as part of the permit.

Fawcett’s talent on tap Bacchus Marsh’s Ben Fawcett is gearing up to represent Australia at the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships in Sydney from Sunday. The Paralympic gold medallist will join an 11-strong Australian Steelers team aiming to become the first wheelchair rugby team to win an International Wheelchair Rugby Federation world championship on home soil. The Australian Steelers are the reigning world champions and two-time defending Paralympic champions. Fawcett said he was looking forward to competing at home. “I’m really stoked to be selected. The training leading up to [the world championships] has been getting heavier and heavier and the excitement has been building,” he said. “Everything seems to be falling into place.” Fawcett was part of the team that won Australia’s first wheelchair rugby championship in 2014. “Playing in front of a home crowd, there’s

going to be so many more people there, so many more supporters there and I know that’s going to be better for us,” he said. “The louder the crowd is for us, it’s just going to help us along the way.” Fawcett and his teammates will face teams from Japan, Sweden, New Zealand, Denmark and Ireland in the qualifying rounds of the competition. Teams from US, Canada, Britain, France, Columbia and Poland will battle it out in the other qualifying pool. The championships will be held at Sydney Olympic Park from August 5-10. Laura Michell

Get creative: Short Story Competition

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Council was delighted when we were advised that we’d been successful in obtaining significant funding boosts for key community infrastructure projects in Eynesbury and Diggers Rest. The Federal Government awarded $2.84 million from its Building Better Regions Fund to help construct stage one of the long-awaited Eynesbury Recreation Reserve. The project will deliver a sporting reserve, along with an adventure playground, BBQ facilities and walking paths. We also anticipate the reserve will be used as a training facility for the Eynesbury Football Club. The State Government also announced that Council would receive $100,000 to upgrade lighting on one of the ovals at the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. Council will match the State Government funding for this project, which will see existing infrastructure

removed and replaced with lighting which meets Australian standards. This is a wonderful outcome for the Diggers Rest Football and Netball Club, who have demonstrated steady growth over recent years, and proven to be strong advocates of female participation in sports. Finally, I’d like to remind all our budding storytellers that the annual Melton Libraries Short Story Competition is now open. Stories can be submitted in a number of formats including print, video and illustration, and closes Friday 31 August. Visit melton.vic.gov.au/ shortstory for full details. I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200 to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email at: bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Let your imagination run wild and put pen to paper in the Melton City Libraries 2018 Short Story Competition. Budding and established writers, and creative minds of all ages, are being encouraged to get creative and submit their short stories to win some great prizes.

This year, locals can submit their entries in any medium including print, illustration, video, verse, voice, or combinations of these. Entries will be judged in junior, teens, and adult categories, and authors must live, work or study in the City of Melton, or be a library member. Entries should be no more than 1500 words or, for other story formats, something that takes no more than five minutes to experience. Award-winning Melbourne author Mark Brandi; reviewer, freelance writer and YA fiction specialist Bec Kavanagh, and children’s book author and publisher Jane Godwin will judge this year’s competition. There is over $2000 worth of prizes to be won across the three categories. Entries will be accepted until 31 August, and can be submitted by email at shortstory@melton.vic.gov.au, or in person at the Melton Civic Centre, or at a Melton City Libraries branch. They can also be submitted online, or posted to: Short Story Competition, Melton City Council, PO Box 21, Melton, 3337.

Our community has changed considerably since I was first elected to Council nearly 20 years ago. It has blossomed into one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia, bringing opportunities and challenges for both Council and residents, alike. Council works tirelessly to advocate to all levels of government to ensure the delivery of essential infrastructure and services that support our residents and ensure that we can thrive under the pressure of rapid, sustained growth. Our key advocacy priorities include encouraging the State Government to invest in new primary, secondary and specialist schools; improving road infrastructure like the Western Freeway and Melton Highway; developing better bus and rail services, including the duplication of the Ballarat Rail line; improving health services and facilities

within the municipality; and increasing police numbers and improving public safety across the board. Council will continue its efforts to advocate on behalf of our community to ensure that our City remains one of the most desirable municipalities to live, work, and raise a healthy, and happy family. And finally, I’d like to say how thrilled I am to announce that the soon-to-becompleted Melton history book will be launched later this year. The book was an initiative I put forward several years ago, as a means of capturing our rich history and celebrating our wonderful municipality, and I cannot wait to read it. Cash splash for sporting complex By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council will splash an extra $220,000 on a sports pavilion at Fraser Rise. The total cost for the City Vista Sports Precinct has now blown out to $13 million, with Sunshine George Cross Football Club contributing $1 million towards the project. Cambridge ward councillor Kathy Majdlik at last week’s meeting, moved to expand the scope of the project to build a roof extension and viewing area at the main pavilion, which would cost about $220,000. Her recommendation follows a council

report which identified a number of potential upgrades not in the original project, including public toilet blocks, roof extensions and laying instant turf. In the report, council officers said while they didn’t recommend expanding the scope of the project, they warned against delaying a decision on including new items. Officers said attempting to retro-fit any works to the pavilion would incur increased costs because of disruption to work and the possibility of re-doing works already completed. “Where we saved money [by not having to

remove any rocks] why can’t we put it into the roof extension? Cr Majdlik said. “This is a winter game. But Coburn ward councillor Sophie Ramsey, said any funding decision should be considered in next year’s budget. She said the council would like to deliver each and every one of the upgrades but it had already committed $11 million to the project – about $1.5 million over the anticipated costs. “I think officers now need the time to negotiate with the club to see if there’s any scope for the club to look into getting a council loan [to deliver the upgrades].

However, Cr Majdlik said while she acknowledged the project was expensive, it made more sense to set aside funding for upgrades during the construction. Construction on the project has started, with excavation works completed. Early works for the carpark and playing surfaces are under way. Melton council expects the project to be finished in the next 12 months. Once completed, the precinct will have two grass soccer pitches, two synthetic soccer pitches, umpires rooms, changerooms and canteen space. Sunshine George Cross Football Club will maintain the precinct for 20 years.

See change for kids Seventy Melton children have been given “the gift of sight thanks to a new initiative being rolled out across Victorian public schools. As part of the Glasses for Kids initiative, University of Melbourne optometry students screened hundreds of Melton pupils. If the screening indicated more testing was required, they were referred to Specsavers Melton. Specsavers Melton optometrist Ioannis Pataridis says that for the children he has tested so far, he has prescribed 70 pairs of glasses, which the students can get for free thanks to Department of Education and Training Victoria-supported charity State Schools Relief. “Everyone deserves the right to be able to see clearly and it has been wonderful to be able to assist these kids in the important years of their development, he said. “Many parents have said that they didn’t

know there was anything wrong with their child’s eyes, but as many common eye conditions have no symptoms, it can be hard for parents to see that there may be cause for concern. “Screening every child’s eyes has really helped, especially for the younger children, who may find it hard to explain the difficulties they are experiencing. State Schools Relief president Barry Smith said Glasses for Kids was making a significant impact on children’s lives and setting them up for a “brighter future. Melton homeless level surges By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Learning skills for life

Fourth-grader Zara plays hoops with Zanden.

For at least a few hours a week, these Hillside children drop the devices and get out the tools. More than 50 pupils from Sydenham-Hillside Primary School’s Hillside campus have joined a lunchtime woodworking program, creating old-school games, such as noughts and crosses and dominoes. School chaplain Rob Nansen, who started the initiative, says he wanted to offer pupils an opportunity to step away from the technology, support their creativity and improve their hands-on skills. The pupils get a chance to play with the games they’ve built and donate it to others in the community. The most recent donation was to a local kindergarten last Wednesday. “We use old hand tools … hammers, hand drills, so the kids are learning some great skills along the way,” Mr Nansen says. “The students love it … they hear about it and ask if they can join [the woodworks program]. “The non-academic kids they thrive on this opportunity.”

The number of homeless people in Melton soared by 25 per cent in five years, according to the latest census data. There were 333 people living rough in Melton on census night in 2016, up from 267 on 2011’s census night. The numbers cover people couch-surfing or living in temporary accommodation. Salvation Army state policy unit manager Jason Davies-Kildea said that while homelessness increased by 12 per cent in Victoria in the five years to census night 2016, some pockets, such as Melton, experienced greater increases. “Not all people are rough sleeping on the streets and in their cars, although there’s a larger proportion of that than we’d like to see,” Captain Davies-Kildea said. “It also includes young people couch surfing, and issues around serious overcrowding – people in rooming house situations where they can’t guarantee they’ll be there next month.” The lack of affordable private housing, coupled with the lack of social housing, is an issue governments need to urgently tackle, according to Captain Davies-Kildea. A Salvation Army analysis has revealed 3000 social housing units need to be built in Victoria every year for the next 30 years to keep up with future demand. Currently, there are about 200 social houses being built each year. Although Melton is one of the most affordable municipalities in the state, many people are still unable to afford it, according to Captain Davies-Kildea. “The number of affordable properties in places like Melton are dwarfed by people who want to access those properties,” Captain Davies-Kildea said.

Cop dialogue brewing Melton residents are being invited to have a coffee, or a cuppa, with a cop. “Coffee with a Cop” – a joint initiative of Melton police and Woodgrove Shopping Centre – brings officers and the community together for conversations it is hoped will break down barriers and build strong relationships. The first session will be on Wednesday (August 1), but there’ll be plenty more opportunities in the coming months to meet local police. Melton Sergeant Shona O’Connor said the informal sessions were a chance for people to ask questions and raise issues important to them.

“This initiative provides the community and police with an opportunity to meet in a casual environment and discuss safety in the community, perceived issues and for the community to better understand the role of their police,” Sergeant O’Connor said. “Melton and Caroline Springs police … are always encouraging members of the community to attend and support this great initiative.” Meet at the Muffin Break, in the food court, on Wednesday, August 1, from 2-4pm for a complementary coffee. MP resigns after drink driving By Adam Carey, The Age Liberal MP Simon Ramsay will leave Victorian politics at the next election after being caught drink driving on the wrong side of the road in a drunken state on July 21. The upper house MP for western Victoria issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon saying he had told Opposition Leader Matthew Guy of his decision to step down over the incident. On Monday, Mr Guy said he had asked Mr Ramsay to “reflect upon his future” in politics. “I am deeply remorseful for my actions

and apologise for my error of judgment,” Mr Ramsay said in his statement. “I also regret any embarrassment and hurt caused to my family, friends, colleagues and the Liberal Party. Police pulled the MP over after they spotted him driving on the wrong side of the road late on Saturday night in Barwon Heads. He later blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.19 per cent, almost four times over the legal limit of .05. He faces charges for his drink-driving offence and the cancellation of his licence for

up to two years. His western Victorian electorate is the second largest in the state, stretching from Melbourne’s western fringe to the South Australian border. Mr Ramsay said it had been an honour

representing western Victorian people. “Eight years ago, working on my farm, I realised I could do more for farmers and country Victoria,” he said. “It has been a privilege to have worked on important issues like protecting our CFA volunteers.” Mr Ramsay had been at a football match in Barwon Heads on the afternoon before he was caught drink-driving. Victoria will go to the polls on November 24, in an election that will be fought over law and order policies as much as any other issue.

In search of first big win Bacchus Marsh golfer Josh Younger is hoping the Fiji International will bring him his first big win. Younger, who has been a professional golfer since 2009, is heading to Fiji this week to compete in the marquee tournament for the third time. The tournament is part of the PGA Tour of Australasia and has also been sanctioned by the European and Asian tours, with $1.25 million in prize money up for grabs. Younger said the Fiji International was an important tournament for Australian players. “It’s an amazing place and an amazing golf course. Hopefully it is a good year for me,” he said. Younger started playing golf casually with his friends when he was about 12 years old. Over time, his interest grew as he spent his school holidays out on the golf course. In 2009, after a stint playing national golf and

The Melbourne Star Observational Wheel’s Floating WInter Chalet is the ultimate in high-flying luxury. (Pictures: Supplied)

Warm to winter in a high-rise chalet If ever a city could turn dreary winter into a memorable experience, it’s Melbourne. Forget views of snow-capped mountains and alpine forests – there’s a winter chalet with a difference right in our backyard. And the views are just as spectacular. The Melbourne Star Observational Wheel has transformed one of its heated glass cabins into a cosy escape with its indulgent Floating Winter Chalet. Curl up on comfy beanbags, sip on warm mulled wine and enjoy a cheese platter while

you take in the breathtaking views 40 storeys above Melbourne – there’s even a crackling fire on the TV screen to set the mood. Revel in the indulgent feeling of watching the daily grind of the city unfold beneath you on a busy weekday afternoon as you enjoy the generous platter that includes house-baked croutes, quince paste and muscatels. The 30-minute flight provides guests with 360-degree views of Port Melbourne, the Spirit of Tasmania docks, Williamstown and the West Gate and Bolte bridges.

Even on a winter’s day, the skyline stretching all the way to the Mornington Peninsula, Mount Macedon and the Dandenong Ranges is a reminder of just how beautiful are Melbourne and its surrounding regions. The Melbourne Star Observational Wheel is one of only four giant observation wheels in the world and the only one in the southern hemisphere. Its unique “star within a star” design represents the seven-pointed Federation Star of the Australian flag.

And while it’s the perfect way for tourists to get a view of a wonderful city, it’s also ideal for reminding Melburnians of what’s right on their doorstep. The Floating Winter Chalet is available until August 31. Enjoy an intimate two-person flight for $350 or a flight for a group of six for $370 (a little over $61 per guest). Backing on to the golf course and directly opposite the 15th green, the views from this abode are striking. The house is built in a timeless style, creating great lifestyle opportunities. Living spaces are generous and include the huge open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area, separate theatre room and a large study, which could be a third living area. The kitchen has gloss cabinetry, waterfall stone benches, stainless-steel appliances and a walk-in pantry. There are four generous and carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes, including the main with en suite and a walk-in robe. Landscaped gardens front and back, double garage, contemporary fencing, ducted heating, evaporative cooling, high ceilings and a sprinkler system … everything has been thought of.

The fireplace in the lounge room is a boon for warmth and comfy ambience. This L-shaped room is carpeted, has large timber-framed windows and is a great size. There’s a second living area (currently a meals zone) which has been updated with floating floors. The kitchen is of a good size and has floating floorboards, good benches and lots of cabinet space. Three bedrooms are all carpeted and have built-in robes. There’s a single lock-up garage, a two-car carport and a well-maintained concreted drive. There are established gardens on the large block of about 747 square metres. The pergola area is great for entertaining. Despite its age, this hardy family house has been well looked after and can be modernised at your leisure as you enjoy a property in a safe court location.

MELTON SOUTH 17 Bandon Road, 3338 Harcourts: 8065 5007

Price: Contact agent

This one has to be right up there as one of the most impeccably presented properties around. It positively gleams, which allows all the benefits of living here to be in sharp focus. Down a timber walkway that bisects landscaped front gardens with synthetic turf, entry under a porch is to a tiled hallway where the pearl-grey floor tiles and wall paint, as seen all through, are on display. To the left is the grey-carpeted main bedroom, which has an open walk-in

3

Private sale robe and an open en suite, decked out in soft-grey and white, with toilet tucked behind a wall. Next up is a walk-through carpeted lounge room with grey roller blinds matching those in all other rooms, and then it’s through to the tiled living hub. The sleek kitchen, with an island bench under a trio of appealing industrial-style pendants, has mottled-grey laminate on benches, grey splashback tiles, soft-grey laminate cabinetry, a cupboard pantry and a dishwasher and 900mm cooker.

Wall cavities in the sitting area reveal a tiled hallway, along which are two fitted and carpeted bedrooms, the sparkling main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry. A covered alfresco area out back faces a smallish backyard laid with large grey gravel, while a brick-walled raised garden bed runs along the back fence. There’s also a timber deck, open to the sunshine, when the weather suits. Other features include ducted heating and cooling, and a remote-controlled double garage with internal access.

Waterford estate, where this appealing house calls home, has an approved shopping centre complex in the pipeline. Melton train station and Melton Station Square shopping centre – anchored by Coles – are a five-minute drive away. Melton South Primary School is just four minutes away. If new-shine and everything done is high on your wish list, this one ticks the box beautifully. Carole Levy 19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 31, 2018

SPORT Bears see off challenge By Tara Murray Burnside Heights got out of jail against the Sunbury Kangaroos in the Essendon District Football League Women’s qualifying final on Sunday. The Kangaroos pushed the Bears all the way, with the Bears not hitting the front until the last 10 minutes. Once they hit the front, the Bears stayed there, winning 6.7 (43)-5.9 (39). Bears coach Brent Thomas gave full credit to the Kangaroos. “They put numbers behind the ball, which caught us out and they totally changed up their structures. We had to coach that game of football to win.” Thomas said the biggest thing for his players was getting their mindset right when not necessarily playing their best. He said it was the experienced players who stood up when it was required. The Bears kicked the last two goals of the game and were able to keep the ball in their 50 after hitting the front. “The Kangaroos came out of the blocks and we knew they would come after us,” Thomas said. “It was about belief. “We really had to make some moves to counter that. We weren’t on our game today, so we had to fight through that game mentally, so full credit to my girls.” The other key was fitness, with the fruits of the Bears’ big pre-season on show. Thomas said they didn’t really have any standouts, with all players doing what was needed. “I don’t think we had a spectacular player,” he said. “Our top six players, our top-tier players, all made the one per centers happen – little, short handballs, creating opportunities and knowing where to run. “I put one of my key forwards back and she knew the role straight away and what to do.” The win means the Bears are through to the preliminary final and have a week off. Thomas said the week off wasn’t necessarily a good thing, as the side had just come off a two-week break. In the past four rounds, the Bears had two teams forfeit against them and then there was a bye before the finals. Thomas said they would focus on staying together as a team before their next match. The Bears will play Westmeadows or Aberfeldie, who will face each other in a semi-final. “We were keen to play – we needed a game,” Thomas said. “We were a little bit rusty, but hopefully we’ll be better physically and mentally.”

Sports shorts TAC Cup

Darley’s Zac Butters has been named in the list of young footballers who will have their chance to shine in front of AFL recruiters at the AFL Draft Combine. Butters, who has been playing with the Western Jets, is one of several Jets players named, with Daly Andrews, Buku Khamis and Xavier O’Halloran also selected. On Saturday, the Jets lost 17.7 (109)-9.8 (62) to the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup. Jack Watkins was named the Jets’ best. The Jets are sixth after 13 rounds.

Netball

Darley pushed ladder-leading Sunbury Lions in their Ballarat Netball League clash on Saturday. While the Lions were missing several players, they had expected to get the job done. The Devils, though, had different ideas. The Devils led in the second quarter, before the Lions hit the front. While they remained there, there was hard work to be done on the way to their 56-53 win. Maegan Taylor shot 45 goals for the Devils. Bacchus Marsh and Melton South also suffered losses.

WRFL

Caroline Springs got its fourth win of the Western Region Football League division 1 season on Saturday. The Lakers were never in trouble after a 35-6 first quarter, going on to win 11.11 (77)-9.5 (59). The Lakers are seventh with four wins. For the full story, go to starweekly.com.au/ sports.

Hockey

Melton suffered a 3-2 loss to Old Carey in Hockey Victoria’s winter Vic League 3 men’s competition. The loss was a disappointing one for the Mustangs, who entered the game higher on the ladder. The Mustangs sit in fifth position. The Melton women had a 10-0 loss to MHSOB in Vic League women’s 2. In the same competition, Caroline Springs had a 3-0 win against RMIT. The Springers are sitting in second place.

Caroline Springs keen to stop Storm’s march In most other competitions, Caroline Springs would be the raging hot favourite for the premiership. In the Western Region Football League senior women’s, Caroline Springs is just one of the chasing pack trying to catch up with ladder-leader Manor Lakes. Caroline Springs is 9-1 with the huge percentage of 804.62 per cent – a number that would normally see you sitting in first place. However, Manor Lakes has produced an out-of-this-world season so far – the Storm are 9-0 and on 2997.44 per cent. Caroline Springs coach Anthea Stathakis said her side learnt a lot when the top two teams squared off just a month ago. Much of what the Lakers have done at training since has 34 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 31, 2018

been centred on redemption in this Saturday’s re-match at Town Centre Oval. “I think that it’s going to be a real blockbuster between us and Manor Lakes,” Stathakis said. “I’m not going to give too much away, but we’re working on a few things to try and shut down their midfielders and forwards. “I’m confident the girls are going to give 100 per cent.” While it has not been enough to dislodge the top side, Caroline Springs could hardly have played any better in the opening 10 rounds. The Lakers have averaged more than 100 points per game and conceded on average just 13 points per game. “The girls have had a really good season,” Stathakis said. “The biggest issue you have

when you’re beating teams by big margins, you don’t want the girls to become complacent, but they understand that. “The girls know there’s no slacking off. “We’ve got our goals for the remainder of the season and hopefully the ultimate prize at the end.” Alexandra Fato has been the standout for Caroline Springs. A fearless onballer, Fato has been named in the Lakers best players in every game this season. “I reckon she’s the best midfielder in the competition,” Stathakis said. “She’s got great game sense, a beautiful kick and she’s very smart with her decisions.” Caitlin Pretty has been the focal point in attack for Caroline Springs. Pretty has kicked

42 goals, including 18 in a single game, but could well have had more had she been used as a stay-at-home forward. “I do rotate her between the positions, but she’s probably one of the best forwards in the league and shows it when she’s up there,” Stathakis said. Caroline Springs’ defence has been watertight. The Lakers have kept opponents scoreless on four occasions. Captain Alisha Jamieson has marshalled the defence with aplomb, while Amy Searle has been good one-on-one. Emma Payne and Cassie Wilson have racked up the possessions across half-back. Centrals work hard to keep top teams on their toes Melton Centrals pulled off one of the upsets of the Riddell District Football League season with a thrilling win against Wallan on Saturday. Coming off their best performance of the season, the Centrals continued where they left off on Saturday. Centrals led by 25 points at half-time but they knew the Magpies would come at them and indeed they got to within a goal on several occasions in the third quarter. The Magpies hit the front in the last quarter, but a goal from Dylan Weir with three minutes to go gave Centrals back the lead. They managed to hold on, winning 10.5 (71)-10.10 (70). Centrals coach Mathew Sproule was thrilled with the win which he said showed how far the side had come this season.

He said they would not have been able to respond and regain the lead earlier in the season. “We had our chances in the first quarter, before in the second quarter we out-played them and should have been further ahead,” he said. “We knew they would challenge us and they did challenge us. They were really good in the third quarter. “Every time they would get within two to three points, we would get a goal. It was important that they didn’t hit the front in the third quarter.” While the Magpies did hit the front early in the last quarter, Centrals didn’t panic. It was a snap from star goalkicker Weir with three minutes to go that put Centrals back

in front. While Weir only kicked two goals, Sproule was thrilled with his efforts. “We’ve been working with him to try and look for other teammates,” he said. “He kicked two goals, but gave off six goal assists. We were rapt with his performance.” Skipper James Aquilina was one of the benefactors and he kicked five goals, including four in the first quarter. He was named the Centrals’ best, along with Joseph and Michael Callus, Peter Akech and Samuel Apineru. Sproule said they could have named as many as 12 players in the best. The win is Centrals’ second in a row and keeps them in finals’ contention, While still a chance to play finals, Sproule is realistic about their campaign.

He said the most important thing for him was they continued to improve each week. “We’ve more confidence, trust and belief,” he said. “We’re starting to believe in each other and playing together more as a team. “The tough games don’t stop for us. We thought if we could get one team above us we would be happy. “There’s the belief that if we can beat one top team, why can’t we beat two or three.” In other results, Riddell flexed its muscles against Rockbank winning, 27.25 (187)-1.3 (9). Diggers Rest won its catch-up match with Romsey, 13.12 (90)-11.9 (75). The game was originally meant to be played in round one. Tara Murray

Rams rock the Bombers By Tara Murray Rockbank has pulled off a surprisingly big win against Riddell in the Riddell District Netball League. Having already beaten the Bombers once this season in an upset win, the Rams were expecting a tough, hard-fought contest. But that wasn’t to be the case, with the Rams smashing the undermanned Bombers 66-35. Rams captain Mary Brodie said they weren’t expecting such a big result. She said they had no idea until game time that the Bombers were missing most of their usual side, with Victorian Netball League commitments the next day having an impact. “We didn’t have that one down as a win,” she said. “We just wanted to keep playing the way we had been playing. It was a massive shock, as we thought they would come out firing.” Brodie said despite the change in personnel for the Bombers, it didn’t change the way they went about things. She said they kept the foot to the pedal all game, which was shown as they shot 16 goals in the final quarter. Brodie said it was a good even performance, with some players getting more court time than in other games. A couple of other players battled through illness. “It was really good for us,” she said. “It was great to get that win. “Right across the board, we had a good game. Karli Love played goal keeper and was amazing. She hasn’t had a lot of court time. Everyone did the role they were asked of.” Rebecca Hicks shot 35 goals from 43 attempts, while Isabelle Maguire shot 18 goals switching between defence and attack. The Rams remain in sixth position, a game ahead of Diggers Rest. The Rams have matches left against Broadford, Woodend-Hesket and Macedon in the run to the finals. Brodie said the aim was to remain in that top six and play finals. “We want to keep improving every match we play,” she said. “It’s coming together – we just want to make sure that we play finals. We need to put our best performances out there and try and hang on to a top six position. “It’s very exciting for not only the team, but also the club.” Diggers Rest, who are starting to get all their players back, kept in touch with the top six with a thrilling win against Romsey. Playing their postponed round one match, the Burras defeated the Redbacks by a goal for a second time this season. The Burras managed to be ahead at the final whistle 38-37. Melton Centrals proved no match for Wallan, which won 56-37. Sarah Hepburn shot 28 goals and was named Centrals’ best. The result further dented Centrals’ finals hopes. They will be relying on winning their three remaining games and for a lot of results to go their way.

Phoenix nails smashing win Melton Phoenix has made it four wins in a row in FFV state league 5 west soccer. After a rough start to the season, the Phoenix players have found their groove and made themselves into a team not to be taken lightly. Facing the lower-placed Maribyrnong Greens, the Phoenix had a day out with a 5-1 win. Not for the first time this season, Jason Hill opened the scoring for the Phoenix. Hill made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute before Rob Bebenek added another goal two minutes later. The Greens got the first goal of the second half to reduce the margin, before Hill got the three-goal advantage back with his third. Connor Krizmanic iced the win when he scored Phoenix’s fifth goal in the 78th minute. The Phoenix are eighth, having won six games. Westside Strikers had a slight hiccup in their quest for the state league 5 west title. The ladder-leading Strikers had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Moonee Valley Knights. The Strikers led 1-0 at half-time before the Knights levelled the scores in the second half. Despite the result, the Strikers have a 10-point lead at the top of the ladder. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills had a 5-1 win against Surf Coast, with all single goalscorers. The Stallions are up to third on the ladder, having played one less game than second-placed Truganina Hornets. Rockbank captain Mary Brodie was among those shocked by Saturday’s result. Hillside finds form at the right end of the season Hillside kept its finals hopes in its own hands with an upset win against Airport West in Essendon District Football League division 1. Following some strong performances against some of the top sides in recent weeks, the Sharks put it all together on Saturday. There wasn’t much in it in the first half, before the Sharks put the burners on in the third quarter to open up a 33-point lead at the last break. It was a dour last quarter, but it didn’t matter, the Sharks had done enough to win, 13.13 (91)-8.10 (58). Sharks football manager Darren Mantynen said they had been building to this performance in recent weeks.

“We’ve got a few players back and there’s only about two players out of the best 22. “A loss here and it would have been pretty difficult. “We pretty much controlled the game all day with our pressure. They got lucky with a few goals. Our third quarter was really good.” Jordan Sinclair and Mitchell Church kicked three goals each for the Sharks. Mantynen said Victor Micallef and Jeremy Hayes were among the standouts, along with Joel Bonnici. Bonnici had the job on Eagles star Tyson Young and restricted him to two goals and kicked one of his own. Mantynen said they were really starting to find a spread of goalkickers, meaning

they weren’t relying on Church and Brandon Coletta. Coletta, who hasn’t played for three weeks, is out with a knee injury. Mantynen said Coletta would be touch-and-go to be back for finals. The win was the Sharks’ first against a top-three side this season. However, they remain in fifth spot, two points outside the top four. Mantynen said if they can win their remaining two games against East Keilor and Jacana they should be in a good spot heading into a final round bye. After missing out on finals a couple of years ago when they needed results to go their way in a final round bye, they’re keen for it not to happen again.

“If we win the next two, it hopefully secures us a spot in the top four,” Mantynen said. “We’ve hit form at the right time of the year and hopefully we can do what Airport West did last season and come from fourth and play in a grand final. “The focus is winning the next two games.” In division 2, Burnside Heights lost to Moonee Valley, 26.16 (172)-13.7 (85). The Fog blew the game open in the second quarter with six goals to two and then continued that in the second half. Josh Covelli, who headlined a number of Bears players who re-signed during the week, kicked six goals. Tara Murray

Devils turn up the heat By Tara Murray Darley’s rise up the ladder continues, with the Devils second after a big win against the Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League. After losing one match to the Lions this year, the Devils were keen to make sure it didn’t happen a second time. Despite some poor kicking, the Devils had no troubles in the 13.18 (96)-7.10 (52) win. Devils coach Heath Scotland said with Sunbury in a similar position, both sides had a lot to play for. “We kicked quite poorly, but we had a lot of opportunities offensively,” he said. “Sunbury are a good side and have everything to play for in terms of their season. “Credit to our boys, we were quite strong defensively and offensively we were really able to penetrate. “If we straighten up those conversions, we could have blown them away.” One of the keys for the Devils was their pressure when they didn’t have the ball which set up a lot of forays forward. After being up and down early in the season, they have become more consistent in recent weeks. Scotland said the biggest change was the development of the middle-tier players. He said they were no longer just relying on the stars to perform. “Individually, everyone is buying in and playing their role. Whether they’re a 17-year-old like Andrew Azzopardi or Jai Dodemaide, or a 38-year-old coach. “Players who have got more responsibility and have nearly a whole season under their belt. “Players who may have been a bit unsure are now settled. I use the example Corey Cullen who hasn’t played a lot of senior footy over the last two years. “He’s become a real dependable, reliable backman for us. We have a number of players at the moment who are really playing their role.” Daniel Robson kicked three goals for the Devils, while Billy Myers, Steve Kennedy, Rhys Ellis, Jacob Zeestraten and Shane Page were the best in a strong, even contribution. Scotland returned to the side after a three-week suspension for his third game of the season. Despite retiring at the end of last season, Scotland said he would continue to play if needed. “While the body holds up, I may as well keep playing,” he said. “We won’t get Dan Roy back, we won’t get Leigh Spiteri back and we won’t get Matt Inglis back, that’s three midfielders who I was banking on for the second half of the year and that really hurts us. “While I can play a part I’ll continue, but I certainly won’t hold myself in the side ahead of somebody that is playing well.” The win and other results moves the Devils up to second with four rounds remaining. Scotland said the hard work was still to come. “It can turn quickly,” he said. “Whilst we feel good where we are, we can’t 36 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 31, 2018

relax completely. We’re not there to make up numbers. We’re there to defend our title.” The Devils are set to receive a boost in the coming weeks with Brian Graham, Dane Grenfell, Jackson Carrick, Abe Kur and Mark Hanson all slated to make a welcome return to the side. Graham, who suffered a knee injury, was named an emergency for the weekend’s match. Scotland said he wasn’t far off.

“If you ask Brian, he reckons he’s ready to play. “It’s about conditioning now. The risk will be bringing him in too soon and risking a soft tissue injury. “For me he’s the best player in the competition and I don’t want to risk him. “For the first time in a while we’ll start to have options when it comes to selection which is great.”

It was the Dexter Graham show as Melton Thoroughbreds sealed their finals spot in Big V men’s division 2 basketball. Needing a win to make sure of a finals berth, the Thoroughbreds had a fight on their hands early against Mildura Heat. While the Thoroughbreds led at quarter-time, it wasn’t until the second that they broke the game open. They led by 15 points at the main break. There wasn’t much between the two sides in the second half, but the damage had been done and the Thoroughbreds grabbed a 93-75 win. Graham was the star as he helped guide the undermanned side. He played all 40 minutes, shooting 47 points and taking 11 rebounds. Maluk Adut, Wol Wol Ngong and skipper Jordan Kirk scored double figures as well. The win moved the Thoroughbreds to fifth on the ladder with 13 wins. They have won their past three matches. They will face the Southern Peninsula Sharks in an elimination final. The Thoroughbreds’ women’s side finished the season with a 79-72 win against Collingwood All Stars. The second quarter proved to be the difference, with the sides separated by no more than two points in the other three. Molly Young top scored for the Thoroughbreds with 22 points. The Thoroughbreds’ youth league 2 men’s side finished the regular season with a 91-83 win against Western Port Steelers. The Thoroughbreds finished fourth and will play in an elimination final against Craigieburn this weekend. Tara Murray

Sporting life for Ford Escape By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The Ford Escape ST-Line is a new model to the local Ford range, a sports-oriented mid-sized SUV that will go on sale in September. As more and more buyers are moving from sedans and hatches to the practicability of an SUV Ford Australia can obviously see an opening for added sales. The 2018 Ford Escape ST-Line features bold exterior and interior styling, alloy wheels and sport seat designs. The 18-inch Absolute Black alloy wheels are matched to the front grille, foglamp surrounds, roof rails and rear valence for a tough, sporty look. Though it’s nominally an SUV, the ST-Line is aimed at on-road performance not off-road running. It has lowered ride height by 10mm, retuned steering and thicker anti-roll bars for reduced body roll and sharper responses. A new leather trim design is used throughout the cabin and it features red-stitching to match the ST-Line logo. Red stitching is also used on the gear-lever and steering wheel. Stainless steel pedals match the scuff plates and sit over the ST-Line floor mats. Escape ST-Line has Smart Keyless Entry, Blind Spot Information System and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert as part of its Driver Assist suite. An optional ST-Line Technology Pack (MLP $800) adds Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert, Tyre Pressure Monitor, Lane Keeping Aid with Lane Departure Warning. Ford’s SYNC 3 system is standard across the Escape line-up and includes in-built voice activation, native sat-nav as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Apple users can enable Siri for iPhone functions. Power comes from 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 178kW of power and 345Nm

of torque. The official fuel consumption is 8.6L/100km on the combined cycle. It uses Ford’s Intelligent-All-Wheel Drive, which adjusts the delivery of torque to each wheel every 16 milliseconds to maximise road grip and safety. Previously an option on topline Ford Escape models, AEB (Autonomous Emergency

Braking) is now standard in all 2018 Escapes. A smart move because more and more stupid drivers are spending time looking at their phones instead of the road ahead. Though it’s not going on sale until September it might be an idea to contact your local Ford dealers sooner, as the Escape ST-Line will be in high demand.
