Ballan health crisis By Sumeyya Ilanbey Health services at the Ballan GP superclinic are likely to be cut and jobs lost unless the state government steps in and increases funding, according to one board member. Ballan District Health and Care has been grappling with financial difficulties for at least the past four years. Preliminary figures indicate the clinic operated at a $480,000 loss in the 2017-18 financial year, which is projected to increase to $800,000 this financial year if changes aren’t made. Board member and Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell wants the state government to step in. He alluded to service cuts and job losses unless the clinic could be turned around. Although a private facility, the BDHC is community-run and the major health service provider for Ballan. It employs 183 staff, and offers aged-care, hospital care, X-ray and dental, among a number of other services. Chief executive Wayne Weaire resigned last week. In a letter to staff in June, he gave reassurances the clinic was meeting its financial obligation, but conceded it was facing the challenges of increasing demand and costs. Mr Tatchell said BDHC had experienced “exponential growth” over the past five years, finding itself under “enormous growing pains”. “We don’t have a funding bucket like other health organisations,” Mr Tatchell said. “So we need to get those government partners back to the table, because it’s one thing to call us a private hospital but we do a public job. So I think there’s … a play on words. “Unless the state government are prepared to get involved in the funding of it, as a board we need to take responsibility financially and say, ‘We know you want the Rolls Royce, but we can only afford to run the Holden’.” The board will meet the health department soon and discuss ways to make the clinic more viable. BDHC board president Lyn Gunnel said: “Now more than ever, we are working with government and other health services to determine how and when we can transition BDHC from a position of financial strain to financial growth. “The whole Ballan community, and our incredibly hard-working team, depend on BDHC to continue to be a vital healthcare provider in the western corridor of Victoria.” Health Minister Jill Hennessy’s spokesman said the state government was “watching the situation closely”. Mr Weaire was contacted for comment.

Bewitched by short films

Organiser Steve Pereira is ready to roll the movies. (Dennis Manktelow)

Filmmakers will embrace their inner ghouls at Sunshine Short Film Festival’s most spooktacular edition yet. This year’s festival, with a theme of “CarnEvil”, will run on Halloween (October 31) and entrants are being urged to turn to the strange and unusual as the focus of their five-minute films. For festival organiser Steve Pereira, the change of pace from last year’s “Beautiful Sunshine” theme is a reflection of how the festival has grown. “We first started this festival as a way of celebrating local culture … but as we’ve grown we’ve got more recognition and we can look a bit more broadly,” he said. “Horror has always been one of the most popular themes in past years, but it’s also about the carnival, the circus and the oddities of human existence … we want to say, let’s bring them out and enjoy the fact that we’ve got so many different, odd, and eccentric people.” As with previous years, there will be three age group categories – primary school, secondary school and open. The winner of each category will take home $1000, while the judges’ award for the best film overall will win $3000. “Entries can be anything from 30 seconds to five minutes, so it’s very achievable and we have a wide variety of films each year,” Pereira said. “What this festival also does is feature people from a wide variety of ethnicities, who don’t see themselves on the big screen or they are in very prescribed roles. “We get to be our heroes here, and tell our stories the way we want to tell them.” Details: sunshinefilmfestival.com.au Ewen McRae

Green-waste bins get good rap By Sumeyya Ilanbey Moorabool’s urban residents are to be offered green-waste bins on a permanent basis. Councillors agreed at last week’s council meeting to keep the non-compulsory kerbside green-waste collection service within residential and urban areas of the shire such as Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. The service has been in trial mode since January last year. In their report, council officers said the service had attracted a “healthy uptake”,

with 961 residents signing up before the trial started. The number of residents using the green waste collection service had since increased to 2000. The amount of kerbside waste going to landfill since the trial started had decreased 187 tonnes in a year. The report stated that during the trial period, 635 tonnes of green waste had been collected from households. “This material is diverted from landfill … to the Pinegro reprocessing facility at Mt Wallace,” the council report stated.

Council figures for the trial period indicate that on average 300 kilograms of green waste was collected from each property. As part of the service, property owners purchase bins at a one-off cost of $115 and pay $71 a year for the collection. Council officers expected the yearly fee to be between $85 and $100 prior to the start of the trial, but it was reduced because of the high uptake. “Prior to a kerbside green waste collection service option, council was diverting approximately 1000 tonnes of garden

“One thing lead to another … I now have 16 hives,” Mr Castree says. “One at home and 15 others on other people’s blocks of land … I host those hives and in return give the [landowners] some honey.” You don’t need to have a big block of land for beekeeping – just passion and patience, according to Mr Castree. An inquiry into VicRoads’ management of country roads has revealed the condition of country roads are sub-par compared to urban counterparts. Western Victoria MP James Purcell initiated the parliamentary inquiry about two years ago. Its two major themes were road safety and the deteriorating conditions of country roads. The committee tasked with this inquiry handed down its interim report last week, but due to the “complexity” of the matter, recommended the Andrews government refer the report to another committee in the next state government. The committee heard from a number of people and organisations, including councils, about the need for “consistent funding”. The Peri Urban Group of Rural Councils, representing local councils including Moorabool, said consistent funding was needed for VicRoads and local governments to maintain and upgrade country roads. A submission by a group of Darlington residents said the government should consider funding councils directly to maintain lower traffic-volume roads so they didn’t have to apply through VicRoads. The committee also heard a proposal that local councils be supported to increase their road maintenance over VicRoads. “These roads are falling apart faster than VicRoads can fix them,” Mr Purcell said. “I sincerely hope the next Parliament will use this [report] as a springboard for change.”

More than 10 years ago, the alarm was raised about the decline of the world’s bee population. Since then, there’s been a concerted global – and backyard – effort to reverse this tragedy. Craig Castree is one backyard beekeeper doing his bit. About seven years ago, the Werribee man noticed “massive amounts” of honey were being produced in his suburban backyard by European honey bees foraging on his flowers. He created a hive for one colony. Shortly after, Mr Castree noticed another colony and created another beehive.

A 2015 Moorabool council survey revealed more than half of the respondents would use a kerbside green-waste collection service if it was available.

Parents fight for autism care By Tate Papworth

Pupils cultivate a growing menu

(Marco De Luca)

Parents and carers have vowed to fight for service provider Autism Plus. Friends of Autism Plus members say they are extremely fearful for their loved ones’ futures if the government closes this service provider. Administrators appointed by Health and Human Services Minister Martin Foley were to hold an information session in St Albans on Monday night, for families, guardians and carers of Autism Plus clients. Jeff O’Donnell, a member of the Friends of Autism Plus, said he and many other families required the services of the provider. “Myself and a host of other families will be fighting to ensure nothing changes in terms of the service provided,” Mr O’Donnell said. “Where other service providers have turned these people away, Autism Plus has taken them on. My son is one particular case.” The service provider hasn’t been without its critics. An Ombudsman report released last year said Autism Plus and the Department of Health and Human Services put clients at risk by failing to move a group home resident who was accused of sexually assaulting vulnerable housemates. Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the events raised serious concerns about the suitability of Autism Plus to provide programs and care for department clients. While accepting the service provider has had its failings, Mr O’Donnell said it remained essential. “People tell me to read the Ombudsman’s report,” the Caroline Springs resident said. “I’ve read it cover to cover. It’s one thing to read the report. But come out and speak to the families who use this service – walk in the shoes of the families who deal with this every day.”

Pupils are determined to transform Arnolds Creek Primary School into a foodie haven. They will grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh food, thanks to funding from the state government’s Playground to Plate program. School principal Frank Pawlowicz says they’ll transform a section of the schoolyard into an outdoor kitchen, decked out with gas barbecues and garden planters. Mr Pawlowicz said the staff and pupils had always been passionate about gardening and cooking. “We’re trying a holistic approach at the school … and part of that is teaching the kids to grow their own vegetables,” he said. “We have a gardening club up and running this year, and they’ve been preparing the garden.” One hundred schools received funding in this year’s round of Playground to Plate. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the program was an excellent opportunity to teach children about the health benefits of fresh and seasonal food. “Developing a food culture that values health and wellbeing during childhood helps to ensure lifelong healthy decisions and actions and build healthy habits into the future,” Ms Hennessy said. Ambo responses on right track By Laura Michell

Netball switch a big score

(Joe Mastroianni)

Ambulance response times in Moorabool have improved over the past year, but are still failing to meet state government benchmarks, new figures show. Ambulance Victoria data for the three months to June 30 shows that the average response time for code one emergencies in Moorabool is 13.12 minutes, down from 14.07 minutes in June 2017. The data also revealed 71.6 per cent of life-saving code one call-outs arrived within 15 minutes. However, the benchmark is 85 per cent. In June 2017, just 55.7 per cent of code one call-outs arrived within 15 minutes. Ambulance Victoria Grampians regional director Chris James said that while there had been a significant decrease in response times, there was still room for improvement. He said paramedics in Moorabool covered a large area, which affected their response times. There was also an increase in demand for ambulances in Moorabool in the past 12 months, Mr James said. “We will continue monitoring, improving and reviewing the needs of our customers and their expectations,” he said. “We are aiming to give our patients our best care.” In Melton, the average code one response time is 10.46 minutes, down from 11.36 minutes in June 2017. Eighty-five per cent of call-outs arrived within 15 minutes. Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said that overall, the June results were the best in the history of Ambulance Victoria. “Our organisation has transformed dramatically over the past decade. The co-ordinated, statewide service we now provide … is delivering remarkable patient outcomes each and every day,” he said.

Her mum, Vicky Amato, said Jaeda’s game had improved a lot in the past 12 months, with the youngster switching from playing goal shooter to centre and wing defence. Ms Amato said Jaeda switched to netball after years of tennis lessons. “When she started playing inter-school sports she played netball and her interest just grew from there,” she said. “She likes playing alongside her friends.” JAEDA

A voice for South Sudanese By Sumeyya Ilanbey South Sudanese young people in Brimbank and Melton will be given a platform to air their concerns to authorities, connect with training services and engage with youth workers. The state government last week announced a $5.5 million funding pool to establish the Community Support Groups program in the Melton-Brimbank region, Wyndham and Dandenong, aimed explicitly at the South Sudanese community. Staff will be employed to provide young South Sudanese people and their families with culturally-sensitive support, including connecting them to health, education and training services. The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) will manage the Melton-Brimbank group. Staff from government departments, including education and health and human services, will sit down with the South Sudanese community and hear first-hand about their experiences and the support they need. The groups will be community-led in order to encourage their sustainability, CMY acting chief executive Soo-Ling Quek said. It is hoped the South Sudanese community will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and resources to continue the groups if the state government doesn’t continue funding them. Parental expectation, lack of employment opportunities and post-war trauma had been identified as being of serious concern to young South Sudanese people, according to Ms Quek. “Some young people are saying that even

getting a part-time job is really difficult because [they] don’t have those kind of connections or relationships that other young people might have,” she said. “The South Sudanese community has a really strong desire to work together to support young people, but they have very little opportunity to connect them to employment.

‘‘

“With these groups, at least they’ve got people [state and local government representatives] around the table who can leverage in resources. And this is also a great opportunity for various government departments to hear directly from the community themselves.” Tertiary qualified South Sudanese adults were also finding it hard to get employment, Ms Quek said, with many changing their names to sound more Western “to at least get an interview”. “The young people say, ‘But when we get the interview, [employers] look at us and make assumptions’,”Ms Quek said. “We need to also deal with the broader community perception and get better engagement and connection with them.” Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos said the Community Support Groups were about engaging young people to reach their full potential.

The Melton Business Excellence Awards finalists. (Dennis Manktelow)

Finalist feat is the biz Thirty-one businesses from across Melton have been named as finalists in this year’s Melton Business Excellence Awards. After receiving more than 140 nominations for the annual awards, Melton council last week announced the finalists, who will be competing for awards in categories including retail, community contribution and the mayoral achievement award. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the calibre of entrants and finalists was high. “It has been an incredibly competitive year and it was difficult for the judges to pick a shortlist from a long list of talented and worthy businesses who help make our

community tick,” he said. “I would like to congratulate each of our finalists for making it this far. “We’re incredibly grateful for each of the businesses who put their hands up to sponsor the event.” The winners will be announced at the awards gala at Tabcorp Park on August 31. The event will be hosted by singer and entertainer Paris Zachariou. Two businesses will be inducted into the Awards Hall of Fame at the event. Melton pokies losses hit $66m By Laura Michell Gamblers lost more than $210,000 a day at poker machine venues across Melton and Moorabool, new data reveals. The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation recently released statewide pokies loss figures for the 2017-18 financial year, revealing that $66.1 million was lost at Melton’s venues. The municipality’s gambling losses rose 8 per cent from 2016-17, when $61.2 million was

lost at Melton’s seven poker machine venues. The WestWaters Hotel had the municipality’s highest poker machine losses ($13.4 million), followed by Mac’s Hotel ($11.6 million). In Moorabool, punters lost $11.9 million, up 5 per cent from $11,4 million in 2016-17. Bacchus Marsh’s Court House Hotel recorded the highest losses ($4.8 million), followed by Maddingley’s Stoney’s Club ($3.3 million). Statewide, losses were the highest in a decade, totalling $2.7 billion.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman Tim Costello said he was “deeply disturbed” by the figures. He said it was clear poker machines were harming the community and poker machine legislation needed to be reformed. The alliance is calling for all political parties to commit to no new poker machine approvals, the mandatory shutdown of poker machine venues between 2-8am, and for machines to be limited to $1 maximum bets per spin, have slower spinning rates and remove losses

disguised as wins, ahead of the state election. It also wants the maximum daily cash withdrawal limit at gaming venues to be reduced from $500 to $200 and for the duty of care for venues and staff to be strengthened to prevent customer harm. “We need urgent reform to prevent the needless suicides, family violence, bankruptcy and fraud which flows when $2.7 billion a year is ripped from the community through addictive poker machines in 470 suburban pubs and clubs,” Mr Costello said.

Pupils at Diggers Rest Primary School will be heading under the sea next week when they take to the stage in a sold-out performance of The Little Mermaid Junior Junior. The pupils have spent the past six months preparing for the school’s inaugural whole school production, which will be held at the Slovenian Club on Thursday, August 16. Arts co-ordinator Taryn Paterra said the musical has been a massive effort. “The children have been dedicating six months of their time to this,” she said. “Diggers Rest Primary School has always been such a small school, which meant that something so spectacular as this has never been possible before. As our numbers are rapidly growing, we now have enough students and staff expertise to pull something like this all together.” JAYLAH, SARAHZETTE, SOPHIE AND COOPER

Region’s brutal past revealed By Sumeyya Ilanbey A research project is shedding light on the violence of Australia’s colonial frontier. For hundreds of years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have spoken about murders against Indigenous tribes during settlement. A University of Newcastle research project has revealed how “widespread the massacres were. About 250 sites across the country have been identified and mapped, with the number tipped to grow. “It’s important to document these incidents because they resolve the long-standing question – how violent was the colonial frontier? University of Newcastle research academic Lyndall Ryan said. “The high level of community interest and engagement comes from regional Australia, where most of the incidents took place, suggesting that people in the regions really do want to know what happened. Research has uncovered one site in Mt Cottrell which involved the Wathaurong people of the Kulin Nation who spoke the now-extinct Wathawurrung language. As a reprisal for the killing of convict Charles Franks and his shepherd by indigenous people, 17 men headed to Mt Cottrell with muskets, killing 10 indigenous people on July 16, 1836. Settlers portrayed Franks as a gentleman and innocent victim of violence, according to the Victorian Historical Journal. Port Phillip Magistrate William Lonsdale

was instructed in late September, 1836, to investigate the incident, but all of the perpetrators he interviewed had something to hide, according to the University of Newcastle data. It also mentions that one of the men interviewed, William Winberry, “acknowledged that a party went after the blacks and that they were ‘fired on.

‘‘

It’s important to document these - Lyndall Ryan incidents

’’

The interview goes on to say that several shots were fired, that a child was found ‘belonging to the fugitives’, but Winberry ‘did not see’ any of them killed or hurt. Stage one of the digital Colonial Frontier Massacres Map, launched a year ago, recorded 172 incidents across eastern Australia between 1788 and 1872. Stage two, launched last month, extends to events recorded up to 1930. Ms Ryan said the response from the Australian public to the project had been overwhelmingly positive. “The map shows that massacre was widespread and affected hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The research team is welcoming suggestions for additions or modifications to the site, data and map. People are being encouraged to visit newcastle.edu.au or email colonialfrontier@ newcastle.edu.au

Man jailed for ‘dramatic’ robbery By Ewen McRae A Caroline Springs man who took part in a robbery of a Deer Park service station last year has been sentenced to jail. Kokrin Kuchath, 20, pleaded guilty in the County Court to one charge of theft and one charge of armed robbery of a service station on Derrimut Road on July 7, 2017. The court heard Kuchath and three co-offenders drove a stolen car to the service station about 3am. One of the other men smashed the front door with a hammer and Kuchath drove the car through the doors. He remained in the car while the three other men stole cigarettes valued at $6000 and the cash register with $558 inside. The service station attendant hid in the rear storeroom. A short time later police tried to intercept the car in Truganina. A police chase ensued. Kuchath eventually stopped the car in Melton West. The four men hid in nearby backyards where police found them. Kuchath initially denied any involvement in the crimes but later made a full confession. The court heard that Kuchath was born in Sudan, and fled there in 2001 to escape the civil war. He lived in refugee camps in Uganda and Egypt before moving to Australia in 2003 with his mother and siblings. A report from a clinical and forensic psychologist said Kuchath had been a heavy drinker since he was 14 and had struggled with cannabis use at numerous times. Judge Paul Grant said the dramatic nature of the offence and the impact on the victim placed it on the serious end of the spectrum, and a lengthy sentence must be imposed. Kuchath was sentenced to two years and 10 months jail, with a non-parole period of 21 months.

Tree change for school students Budding green thumbs from Melton South Primary School rolled up their sleeves recently to help plant more than 300 trees along Toolern Creek. The students from grades 1 to 5 joined the Friends of Toolern Creek and staff from GJ Gardner Homes at a planting day along the creek. Friends of Toolern Creek president Lyn Holdsworth said the group holds planting days every Monday and Thursday to revegetate the area. She said that the July 26 planting day resulted in 324 gum trees and indigenous shrubs being planted. “The kids were just wonderful. The were running about trying to plant as many trees as they could,” Ms Holdsworth said. The Friends of Toolern Creek began 13 years ago in a bid to beautify the creek area. “We saw how bad it was and didn’t want people going up to Ballarat and Adelaide to see that as their first vision of Melton,” she said. MY PLACE Wendy Gadsby is the international chair at the Caroline Springs Rotary Club. She tells Sumeyya Ilanbey about the community projects the club has been involved in its short three-year life. What’s your connection to the Melton?

previous two years’ proceeds, we donated $8000 towards local and Rotary projects. The first year we donated to the Western Emergency Relief Network. They help people in need with donated second-hand household goods. Last year we donated to the Rotary End Trachoma2020 project – that’s a project aiming to end this terrible and treatable eye disease by 2020 in Australia – and Grace, which is a group that runs across the west supporting women fleeing domestic violence. We have various other projects that our club runs such as the Busy Feet program, a dance class in Melton and Hillside for children with disabilities; we collect cans and food through our Rotary Can project, now with the help of some schools and we have donated these to the Caroline Chisholm Society in Caroline Springs. We prepared and took some Christmas gift bags to some elderly residents at a nursing home. We have worked with Brookside College to help them towards setting up the kitchen for their hospitality program. We have helped at a couple of Safe Plate days where we have put anti-theft screws on cars.

I grew up in Melton South and lived there until I was in year 9 or 10. Most of my family is still in Melton now. I’m a hypnotherapist and sometimes work from the Modern Medical clinic in Caroline Springs. My son also went to school at Lakeview Senior College and I’m also there often doing different things with the [Caroline Springs] Rotary. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton?

What would you change about the area if you could? I would create a few different open community garden spaces where locals could come together and plant fruit trees and vegies, look after them and then share in the produce. It would be good for both mental and physical health and would give people something positive to be involved in for free. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? My favourite place to go for a walk at the moment would be around the lake in Caroline

Melton mayor Bob Turner is concerned about homelessness. (Dennis Manktelow)

Seeking a solution Australians are being rallied to “end homelessness together”. The theme for this year’s Homelessness Week (August 6-12) will focus on highlighting the housing crisis and housing affordability by mobilising the community. A number of events and activities will be hosted in Melton. Western Homelessness Network co-ordinator Sarah Langmore wants people to take part in the activities and sign a petition calling on the state and federal government to increase housing supply. “Homelessness and poverty are inextricably linked,” Ms Langmore said. “People on low incomes are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, child care, healthcare and

education … [They] are often an illness, accident or a pay cheque away from living on the streets.” A number of organisations, including Melton council, Djerriwarrh Health Services and Hope Street have organised two Melton events. There will be an information stall and ‘art battle’ at the Melton library on August 9 from 11am-2pm. Participants can decorate and colour mini wooden houses donated by the Melton Men’s Shed. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives El Toucan a fly You won’t want to go swimming for a few hours after eating bandeja paisa at El Toucan Cafe. But should you so desire, the facilities couldn’t be closer at hand – El Toucan is in the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, its seating gazing out upon the various swimming pools. El Toucan boss Frank Torres keeps the likes of chicken nuggets and burgers on his menu. As he says, this IS a swimming pool operation and he DOES want to stay in business. But he’s very proud to be offering a range of true-blue Colombian dishes. It’s to these we are drawn, as are the tables surrounding us inhabited by Colombian families. Bandeja paisa is something of an informal Colombia national dish. Frank tells us its roots lie in its evolution as a hearty lunch for early-starting, hard-working coffee growers. Nat goes the full bandeja paisa – a huge meal and something of a bargain at $20. I opt for the half serve – it’s not listed anywhere, but is available on request. Even it is a substantial meal and also a bargain at $12. Everything about this is mighty … avocado and chubby tortilla, expertly fried egg and rice, superbly creamy beans and fried ripe plantain. And meat – pork belly, chorizo and pulled beef that would match it with any barbecue joint. Empanadas con yuca ($9) are also outstanding. The three empanadas are made with corn meal, the casings stuffed with beef

EL TOUCAN CAFE Address: Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, 1 Aquatic Drive, Maribyrnong Phone: 0400 924 608 mince and deep fried. They are joined by cassava chips that are fluffy and lovely. On an earlier, reconnaissance visit, I enjoyed sobrebarriga ($22) of slow-cooked beef skirt served with rice, avocado, cassava and sofrito. This, too, is a hefty and excellent meal. Though, in contrast to our other selections, in this case the meat is very tender and the cassava – playing the roast potato role – dryish and a little too starchy for my tastes. El Toucan has specials … on the day we visit there’s a liver dish on, while a few folks around us are enjoying what look like very good pork ribs – even if, as Frank maintains, they are less specifically Colombian than the likes of bandeja paisa. For those wanting to try the El Toucan cooking without making use of the centre’s other facilities, there is no admission charge. Winter hours for El Toucan Cafe are Monday-Friday 9am-8.30pm and Saturday-Sunday 9am-6pm.

Traffic management and the following detours will be in place: • Northbound traffic to Thornhill Park should travel along Greigs Road, Leakes Road and the Western Highway.

• Eastbound traffic to Thornhill Park should travel along the Western Highway and U-turn at the Leakes Road interchange.

Thank you for your patience while we complete this important project.

NEWS

Darley history finds a home The historical Darley Refractories site has been given a major facelift and transformed into a “luxurious” aged-care home. The brickworks’ chimney, built in the 1880s by G.M Seward & Sons of Melbourne, has been restored and repaired and will be a major feature of the Royal Freemason’s Bacchus Marsh home. Bacchus Marsh facility manager Kate Hayward said she was excited about the restoration and retention of the chimney and the homage it pays to the site’s historical significance.

‘‘

A central cafe is also available for residents

’’

- John Chanter

“There’s been significant attention to detail at the site, with the focus being primarily on our residents having a lovely environment where they can live as independently as they’re able to,” Ms Hayward said. Royal Freemasons trustee John Chanter described the home as offering “state-of-theart” amenities, including adjustable beds and mobility devices. There will be an on-call nurse available, as well as an on-site medical clinic where residents’ personal doctors can visit. “Our latest facility will provide private rooms with en suites for 144 residents, catering for both couples and single people, and has a dedicated memory support unit to help meet the specialised needs of residents with dementia,” Mr Chanter said. “No comfort, technology or mobility feature has been left out.”

Mr Chanter said the facility was configured to help draw residents to a central dining area, akin to a family home, where they can choose to eat on their own or in the company of others.

“There are spacious lounges in each wing, and tea and coffee making areas for residents and their families,” he said. “A central cafe is also available for residents and their families.”

Up to 200 ongoing jobs are expected to be created. The facility, at 58 Grey Street, Darley, will be open to the public on Sunday, August 12, between 11am and 1pm.

What a great spot for families. It’s around the corner from Westmelton Reserve and the local milkbar, on a good-sized block (about 809 square metres) and it has a great floor plan incorporating an L-shaped lounge and meals area as well as a large kitchen. The feel of this house is welcoming thanks to the carpeted lounge room, tailored curtains and ducted heating. It has four bedrooms, all with built-in robes, the main bedroom has an en suite. Spaces to entertain year-round include the fantastic landscaped backyard with mature plantings and an undercover paved back porch. The kitchen has loads of space and light with gloss cabinetry and granite benchtops. There’s a two car lock-up garage as well.

There’s three living zones in this property, accompanied by four large and carpeted bedrooms, contemporary fittings and fixtures and, of course, that fantastic country feel. The open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge is floored in matte large tiling. The kitchen, with stone benches and stainless-steel appliances, is understated and looks over more than enough room for a dining table and lounge suite. The four bedrooms get good light and are set together. The main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in robe. A theatre room and sitting room ensure there is plenty of room for entertaining. Outside, there’s a deck as well as a firepit for toasting marshmallows on frosty nights with friends and family.

Hardwood floors, a pot belly fireplace, fan lights in the carpeted bedrooms, fantastic light and space and a big backyard – here is a top place to lay your hat, and at a great price, too. The functional open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area is flooded with light thanks to big ’windows. Modernised, this house feels welcoming, neat and contemporary, with room to further improve over time if you wish. The backyard has established gardens and there is a lock-up garage with adjoining carport off from the deep side-drive. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, feature lighting throughout and a fantastic patio area for outside entertaining all help make this an appealing property, whether for investors or home owners. Close to Melton train station and many other amenities.

This light, bright, neat and tidy house would be perfect as a family home or investment property. Its no-fuss spaces tick all the boxes. These include three carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes and a generous open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area out the back. The main bedroom has an en suite and a walk-in robe. There is a powder room for guests and a central bathroom for the larger family. Tidy outdoor spaces seal the deal with a generous pergola for easy entertaining. The established lawn and low-maintenance garden beds are welcome extras. The timeless facade would be a pleasure to come home to, as would the remote-controlled double garage with internal access. Ducted heating and split-system units keep things cosy. It’s in a great family-friendly pocket and is also close to Arnolds Creek Reserve.

MELTON WEST 8 Pulford Court, 3337 Professionals Ryder: 9743 6400

Price: $595,000 – $615,000

In the bowl of a quiet court in Wilmington estate, this place is much more than meets the eye from the kerb. As well as the formally elegant yet easily manageable gardens, the property has been treated to a stylish interpretation of the Federation style. Dado rails, in most rooms, are bisected by mushroom and off-white shades, these tones picked up in benches. This creates a subtle harmony all through that juxtaposes well with smart contemporary updates. The many bifold and sliding doors have leadlight panes. Fretwork frames an entry to the burgundy-carpeted lounge room

off the entry hall, while white plantation shutters dress a pair of box bay windows. Other windows come with natural-timber plantation casement shutters and floating floorboards are laid in hallways and living rooms. The main bedroom off the entry hall has bifolds to mirrored robes, beyond which is a chic new en suite. Fully tiled, it has a marble-topped provincial vanity unit beneath mirrored storage, plus a walk-in shower with lovely feature tiles that are repeated around the toilet. Two fitted bedrooms share a hallway with the separate toilet and the main bathroom,

which combines the charm of rosy tiles and lace curtains with a modern vanity. The fourth bedroom, neighbouring the laundry, is off a separate rumpus room at the back. There’s also a study, behind bifolds and adjoining the dining zone. At the centre of dining and sitting areas, the kitchen has provincial-style cabinetry, a large brekkie bench beneath eye-catching pendants, chic splashback tiles, dishwasher and a fab cream Smeg 900mm cooker. A huge gabled pergola has a ceiling fan and sound and TV wiring, with brick paving underfoot. It looks out to a stylish old-worlde water feature flanked by topiary

shrubs, behind which are islands of gardens amid sinuous lillydale-topping pathways. A looped-wire fence and gate at one end of the pergola lead to a spacious lawn rimmed with ornamental shrubs, while a small garden shed gives tools a home. This appealing place also has ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, ceiling fans and a freestanding double garage with remote-control. Wedge Park Primary School is within a five-minute stroll and Woodgrove Shopping Centre is four by car. Carole Levy 25 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 7, 2018

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

From Keilor to the world stage By Lance Jenkinson Dylan Pierias is living out his boyhood dream. From the moment he fell in love with soccer as a seven year old at Keilor Park Soccer Club, his ambition was to become a full-time footballer. Now 18, Pierias is contracted with Melbourne City in the A-League and gets the chance to enjoy his passion every day. “Whenever I have the ball at my feet, I’m happy,” Pierias said. “It’s something that I love doing. I don’t think of football as a job – it’s like a hobby that I get to do every day, so I’m privileged to be where I’m at right now.” Pierias is the future of Melbourne City and Australian soccer. The Caroline Springs resident, a skilful and athletic right back, has been involved in elite programs since the age of 13. After a solid five-year grounding with Keilor Park and a season with Spring Hills, Pierias moved into the Skillaroos program, featuring in the Victorian under-13s and under-14s, before he was signed to the National Training Centre Challenge team for top under-15s. His form piqued the interest of Melbourne City and he earned a youth contract with the club and before too long he was offered a full time contract. In 2017, Pierias got an unexpected surprise when an injury-ravaged Melbourne City senior team called him up for his A-League debut. He would become the first player born in the 2000s to feature in the A-League. Pierias was told to be ready because this was the real deal. “The Saturday came and I woke up and I still couldn’t really believe it to be honest – until we had the team meeting before the game and I saw my name in the starting team and it’s history from there,” he said.

Dylan Pierias, centre, in action for Melbourne City against Spanish La Liga side Girona on a recent pre-season tour of India. (Melbourne City Football Club)

Pierias not only started the game, he finished it, too. He played the full 90 minutes in a stirring 2-2 draw with Brisbane Roar. “In the media, they were saying we were going to get smashed because we had so many outs and so many position changes,” Pierias said. “Only about two people from the starting XI actually played. To pull a draw, we looked at it as a positive.”

Pierias has not featured in an A-League game since, but he plans on getting back to the big time as soon as this summer. He was part of Melbourne City’s team that played friendly matches against Indian Super League team Kerala Blasters and La Liga side Girona on a recent pre-season tour of India. “I’m definitely trying to push to play first team,” Pierias said.

“That’s my goal for this year.” More immediately, Pierias will continue his exciting Australian under-age career. He is part of the Australian under 20 set up. He will feature in an Australian under-18 team that will travel to Japan this month for the SBS Cup, a youth tournament featuring teams from japan and Paraguay. “It’s always a privilege to represent your country,” he said.

A win against Melton Phoenix this Saturday will be enough to give the Strikers a guaranteed top-two finish with three rounds remaining. The Strikers are six points clear of second-placed Gisborne and 11 points clear of West Point and Keilor Wolves. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said the year was going well. “We’re reasonably happy, 17 games undefeated,” he said. “We are close to getting the title. We need four points to secure it. “To get two wins would be great. We made it hard for ourselves last week with a draw. Darley has scored a rare win in the Ballarat Netball League. Coming off a strong performance against the Sunbury Lions the week before, the Devils beat Redan 47-29. Melanie Freeman, who scored 23 goals, was named the Devils’ best in their second win of the season. Melton South won a thriller against East Point. The Panthers flew out of the blocks with a 15-6 first quarter and were able to maintain the lead through the next two quarters. East Point came at them in the last quarter, but they were able to hold on for a 46-44 win. Melton lost 43-27 to Sebastopol.

With only one win between the two sides for the season, both sniffed an opportunity to get the points and belt out the song. A period in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Kangaroos got their first win with a 13.14 (92)-9.13 (67) scoreline. Rams coach Leigh McInerney was disappointed. He said the club fielded one of its strongest sides for the season and had been confident of getting a win on what was a big day for Broadford, with Sean Duggan playing game 200. “We played pretty well for much of the day,” McInerney said. “We struggled for five to 10 minutes in the third quarter, which we couldn’t afford to do.” Outside that quarter, little separated the two

teams, with both kicking eight goals in the other three quarters. Braedon Billing was the Rams’ best player, kicking three goals from the wing. Harley Cameron was the other standout. The Rams – bottom of the ladder, 0.28 per cent behind the Kangaroos – will face Woodend-Hesket and Sunbury Kangaroos in the final two rounds. McInerney said they would love to steal a win in the run home. “It’s been a pretty tough season,” he said. “We haven’t had the cattle and injuries haven’t helped us. “Hopefully, we can get some good numbers on the track and keep trying to improve. “We’re getting better in certain areas and periods of play look good – it’s just about getting that consistency.” McInerney said they would sit down with players this week and start re-signing them for next season. After two years in the role, one as co-coach,

McInerney said he was unsure whether he would continue on. In other matches, Diggers Rest’s second-half comeback fell just short against Wallan. The Burras were held goaless until late in the first half and trailed by 25 points at the main break, despite having the same number of scoring shots as Wallan. The Burras kicked three goals in the third quarter to reduce the margin to 18 points at three-quarter time. They levelled the scores in the last quarter, but the Magpies pulled ahead again to post a 10.7 (67)-8.16 (64). The Burras have slipped to fourth with the loss. Melton Centrals’ giant-killing run came to an end at the hands of Macedon. The Cats were way too strong, winning 13.11 (89)-2.8 (20). Dylan Weir was the only goal scorer for the Centrals. The loss ends any chance of Centrals making the finals.

A poor second quarter proved costly for Caroline Springs against Altona in division 1. After leading at quarter-time, the Lakers went without scoring in the second as the Vikings kicked seven goals to lead by 39 points at the main break. They maintained that lead in the second half for a 15.7 (97)-7.8 (50) win. Rex Hickman kicked three goals for the Lakers.

AFL Goldfields

Bacchus Marsh has pipped Melton Centrals for the final spot in the AFL Goldfields’ Women’s competition. The Cobras, who lost to Carisbrook 9.10 (64)-3.9 (27) on Sunday, finished two points clear of the Centrals, who finished their season with a 3.5 (23)-0.0 (0) win against Lake Wendouree. Bacchus Marsh will face Gisborne in an elimination final this weekend. Bacchus Marsh juniors make the grade for jamboree The Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association is abuzz after 10 players were selected to represent the Ballarat region at the upcoming Basketball Victoria Country Jamboree. The 10 players from one of the smaller associations in the region are among 240 from across country Victoria selected for the jamboree after participating in a skills day early this year. The event, which is for under-12s, is part of the Basketball Victoria Country pathway program and is aimed at developing skills while also creating an enjoyable basketball experience. Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association president Nathan Doughney was extremely pleased with the announcement. “Country basketball’s next generation have earned a place in the BVC elite pathway where the experience will be invaluable to these future prospects,” he said.

“We congratulate them and wish them every success when they head to Echuca in September.” Hayley Doughney, Lara Johnson, Emmie Morin, Ruby Thomas, Keira Williams and Addison Wright are among the 120 girls selected for the jamboree. Four players come from the domestic team the Magic and the other two from the Panthers. Jack Higgins, Chaz Jones, Liam Pluck and Seth Wall are the four boys selected from Bacchus Marsh. It’s the first time the association has had so many players selected, with the number usually being about three or four. Association liaison officer Richard Morin said that for a small organisation, it was massive to have 10 players named. He said Bacchus Marsh had 11 Victorian Junior Basketball League sides competing this year, in nine age groups across boys and girls.

“We’re a fairly small club compared to the likes of Sunbury, Keilor and Werribee,” he said. “We had two juniors sides play in metro 1, which is a pretty big experience for a small town.” The selections cap off a big six months for the association, which will have a men’s side in the upcoming Country Basketball League season. The CBL is one of the biggest competitions in the state and is played during the summer months. Tara Murray

Winning start for Melton By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds held off a fast finishing Southern Peninsula Sharks to keep their Big V men’s division 1 season alive. The Thoroughbreds started out strongly in the elimination final and by half-time held a 12-point lead. The Sharks tried to come back and pushed the margin to one point in the last quarter. However, Thoroughbreds would not concede and won 78-75. Thoroughbreds coach Joe Hooks said he could not have been happier with the result. He said holding the lead in the final quarter was vital. “We knew if we had a good start we had to maintain it, as we knew they would make a run at some point,” he said. “In the third quarter they pushed us, but we were able to maintain a small lead. “In the last two-three minutes they really pushed us. We were able to play some great defence. “We’re lucky guys like Dexter [Graham] and Emmanuel [Malou] can play multiple positions. “I was very happy with the result.” Hooks was full of praise for the Sharks, and said they had taught them a lot about how to improve their own game. Graham top scored with 18 points, while Malou had 16 points. Mangar Manyang came off the bench and contributed 16 points. Hooks said Wol Wol Ngong and skipper Jordan Kirk were the unsung heroes in the win. “Wol suffered a big cut across his head and we lost him for about two quarters,” he said. “Kirky, we call the old faithful, stepped up big time in the first quarter and set the tone for the rest of the night.” The Thoroughbreds now face the Coburg Giants in a best of three semi-finals series. The winner goes through to the grand final. The two sides split their regular season games. Game one of the semis will be played at Melton and Hooks has a clear message for the club’s supporters. “Please everyone, show up and pack the gym out,” he said. “The boys really want to play in front of a packed house.” Meanwhile, the season is over for the Thoroughbreds youth league men’s division 2 side. In was an up and down game for the Thoroughbreds against the Craigieburn Eagles. Both sides had some big scoring quarters, but the Eagles came out on top 115-104. Five Thoroughbreds players scored double figures, including Bol Bak, Koby Skenderis and Milan Savic who all scored more than 20 points. The loss ended just the second time the Thoroughbreds have made youth league finals. 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 7, 2018

Panthers stick with coach Heath Pritchard’s stint as Melton South coach will continue into next year’s Ballarat Football League season. Originally appointed for 10 weeks after Ash Manning was sacked, Pritchard has been appointed for next season. Pritchard said he had no hesitation about taking on the role. “It was originally for a 10-week period and it was about getting to know the club and settling the ship,” he said. “We’ve had discussions over the last few weeks and the club wanted me to stay on and I’m happy to. They’re happy with the direction the club is taking.” He said planning for next season was under way, as the Panthers look at their playing list. The club has re-signed captain Shaun White, Jacob Thornton-Gielen and Matthew, Brody and Billy Sullivan. Pritchard said they hoped to have a few more players put pen to paper this week. “We’ve got some good kids and now we’ll start to look at recruiting,” he said. “We’ve started re-signing guys and we’ll look to get the rest in the next week. “We’ll look at the local blokes first. Then we’ll identify other guys that can help us and push us up the ladder.” Pritchard said he had seen massive improvement in his time at the club, even if results did not reflect it. He said they had been more competitive and should have had wins against Sunbury Lions and North Ballarat City. Injuries weren’t helping the Melton South cause, with 15 of the side’s best 22 missing at the weekend. On Saturday, the side lost to ladder leader East Point 17.22 (124)-8.9 (57). Pritchard said the second quarter had been the side’s undoing. “Last time we lost to East Point, we lost by 22 goals; this time it was 10 goals,” he said. “It was one poor quarter that let us down, which is disappointing. It was even stevens for the rest of the game. “The effort and willingness is there and I can’t fault that. I’m more than happy with the effort and what we are trying to teach them.” Ryan Holzer kicked three goals, the only multiple goal scorer for the Panthers. Pritchard said Mark Lynch and Dale Houghton had good games, while Dylan Clake and Will Thornton-Gielen played well in different roles. In other results, Melton defeated Sebastopol 7.9 (51)-4.11 (35), while Darley beat Redan 11.16 (82)-10.6 (66).

Dexter Graham top scored for Melton on Saturday night. (Shawn Smits)
