Ballan health bail out The beleaguered Ballan GP super clinic has been thrown a lifeline, with the state government announcing an “urgent” $500,000 assistance package. Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced last week the package was a short-term grant that will be repaid once Ballan District Health and Care improved and ensured its long-term financial sustainability. The clinic had been grappling with financial difficulties for at least the past four years. Chief executive Wayne Weaire resigned from the clinic earlier this month. There were fears the clinic would slash services and jobs unless its financial position could be improved. Board member and Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell welcomed the state government’s rescue package, describing it as “fantastic”. But he lamented the lack of action from the federal government. “It’s really disappointing the federal government hasn’t come to the table yet, especially because we’ve had this problem for several years,” Mr Tatchell said. “It’s not a new problem and it was always going to happen. I went to Canberra two years ago to raise it. But I’m really pleased the [state] health minister has put the politics to one side, put the people first, and thrown us a lifeline.” Although the money won’t be enough to turn around the clinic’s finances, Mr Tatchell said it could buy it some time and help it work towards putting in place long-term financial strategies.

“Both state and federal government need to understand country people put in a third of the money in their coffers and we need to get more back,” he said. “Instead of talking about growing the bush, we need to do more for the bush.” Ms Hennessy said the financial arrangement would ensure the clinic could “find its feet again”.

“The Ballan District Health and Care sits at the heart of the local community and we have to do everything we can to protect it,” Ms Hennessy said. “We’ll never turn our backs on the hard-working rural and community health services that regional and rural Victorians depend on.” Although a private facility, the Ballan District Health and Care is community-run and is the major health service provider for the area. It employs 183 staff and offers aged-care, hospital care, X-ray and dental, among a number of other services. Preliminary figures indicate the clinic operated at a $480,000 loss in the 2017-18 financial year, which is projected to increase to $800,000 this financial year if changes aren’t made. The federal government and Ballan District Health and Care were contacted for comment.

Heartfelt plea in search for heirloom ring Cathy has trawled through every nook and cranny, thrice, for the past year in search of an heirloom ring. Her efforts have been to no avail, and she’s asking the Melton community for help. Cathy, who asked that her last name not be used, believes she lost the gold sapphire ring at Woodgrove Shopping Centre in August last year. The ring has immense sentimental value. It belonged to her mother-in-law, who died 18 years ago. It was passed on to Cathy by her father-in-law soon after his wife’s death.

“My father-in-law had bought it for her about five or six years before she died,” Cathy said. “They weren’t very wealthy – he bought it lovingly for her and she wore it on special occasions.” Cathy was instructed by her father-in-law, who died in 2006, to pass the ring on to her eldest daughter “when the time was right”. Cathy has been riddled with guilt for the past year, but is confident she lost the ring at Woodgrove Shopping Centre. “Prior to a doctor’s appointment, I’d been

at Woodgrove and I went into my handbag to get the appointment card to have a look and just reassure myself of the appointment time,” Cathy said. “Something dropped out of my bag, I picked it up and put it back into my handbag. “When I was at the doctors waiting room I thought I must check my ring … but I couldn’t find it in my bag.” Cathy said she had been in the process of moving house and had been packing boxes, hoping she would eventually find the precious ring.

“Every time I’ve unpacked a box, I’ve gone through absolutely everything – I’ve unpacked my clothes, gone through the pockets … not once or twice, but three times,” she said. “I’ve gone through everything and haven’t been able to find it.” The ring is a gold sapphire ring, with diamonds encrusted around the sapphire. Cathy said a financial reward would be given to the person who returned the ring. Information to cmbssapphire@yahoo.com Sumeyya Ilanbey

“It was scary, it felt like the Bronx,” she said. “There was at least 150 people and it seemed to be growing. Police were here very quickly, but they were horribly outnumbered. “It’s nice to see police around today still, but I’m still a bit shook up because it was way too close for comfort. I was worried about my kids.” Another resident, Lucy, said the gathering was unusual for the area. “Apart from throwing the rocks at the cop car it was OK, but you think in the back of your mind if something happens there were more of them than the police,” she said. “They were typical teenagers. Police are continuing to investigate an incident in Taylors Hill last week involving up to 150 youths at a local park. Police on Monday said that no arrests had been made. Police were forced to don riot gear and residents told to stay inside and lock their doors during the incident on the basketball courts and nearby parkland at Bronte Way on Wednesday night. Rocks were pelted at a police car during the incident. On Thursday, mounted police patrolled the streets to reassure residents of their safety.

Police last week said the youths had gathered “to fight” and that there was “a cohort” in the group known to officers. Victoria Police Commissioner Graham Ashton told ABC Melbourne that about 20 to 30 Sudanese Australians were involved in the fight which he understood was over girlfriends, with the rest of the crowd made up of spectators. “It was kids from our Australian Sudanese (community) coming from the southern suburbs to meet up with kids from the northern suburbs to have a bit of clash there … about girlfriends or something like that,” he said. Cass, who lives near the site of the incident, said it was scary.

Do you want a new community garden in Taylors Hill or a community memorial in Rockbank? Or perhaps you want to support the Bacchus Marsh State Emergency Services get a new storage facility. There are 11 community groups across Melton and Moorabool vying for state government funding as part of the Pick My Project initiative. Project ideas with the most votes in the state will share in $30 million. The local community is being rallied to vote for their top three projects. Some of the Melton projects include a second renovation at the Melton Scouts Hall, a new electronic scoreboard for the Diggers Rest Football Netball Club, and a health and wellbeing festival. In Moorabool, project ideas include a mental health awareness campaign, a playground at Masons Lane Reserve, and a youth radio training program. Suburban Development Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the state government had been inundated with many great community project ideas. “Pick My Project is giving every community the chance to submit ideas, vote for them and then watch them happen,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. Voting opened on Monday and will close September 17. The $30 million funding pool will be divided between six metropolitan and nine regional areas, with each to receive at least $1 million for project ideas. Between May and July, 2018, Victorians had the opportunity to submit a project idea. For more information, or to vote, visit www.pickmyproject.vic.gov.au or call 1800 797 818.

Men’s shed wants work The Westvale Men’s Shed is on the lookout for community projects. Westvale Men’s Shed champion Steve Tait said the group has a proven background in woodwork and is eager to help out. “We’re looking for opportunities to help out local not-for-profit groups or schools with their community projects and give back a bit,” Mr Tait said. “We made a friendship chair for the Deer Park Primary School a little while back and we’ve done things like make Christmas toys like planes and little pull-along ducks. “We’re really willing to have a crack at anything and everything. If we get stuck we can always go and look things up. It’s amazing what Mr Google can teach us.”

The group meets at the shed every Thursday and Mr Tait said it’s provided more than just an opportunity to hone their woodwork skills. “There’s people here with varying skills and we all show each other things,” he said. “It’s great to come here every Thursday, have a coffee and work on things. “This is just a great little place to come down to and be with blokes.” Those interested need to fill out a ‘project request’ form and submit it to the Men’s Shed, where it will be vetted. Arson accused denied bail By Erin Williams, The Courier A 51-year-old man was seen walking on a busy freeway in an agitated state 12 hours before his retirement village unit burned down on Australia Day, a court has heard. The fire at 11.41pm on January 25 destroyed the Bacchus Marsh Retirement Living unit, causing $200,000 damage. The retirement village’s 37 residents were put in extreme danger, while two residents were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Rodney Barling pleaded guilty to one count of arson at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on

Friday before he made an application for bail. Detective Senior Constable Andrew Cummins told the hearing that numerous motorists phoned triple-0 at 11.36am on Australia Day to report a man walking along the Western Highway at Bacchus Marsh. He said police approached the accused, who was in an agitated state and walking quickly. Barling told police he was walking to Ballarat because he had “had enough of this town”. Detective Senior Constable Cummins said Barling did not tell police he lived at the retirement village, so officers drove him to the nearest train station.

Twelve hours later, at 11.41pm, the Bacchus Marsh Retirement Living manager saw smoke billowing out of Barling’s unit which was completely destroyed in the blaze. Detective Senior Constable Cummins said Barling, who was carrying two cigarette lighters when he was arrested, told police he went to bed on the night of the fire and woke up drugged in a park. The court was told an arson chemist who attended the scene determined the fire was lit with a match or cigarette lighter. Detective Senior Constable Cummins said the Bacchus Marsh Retirement Living manager

contacted Ballarat psychiatric services with concerns about Barling days before the fire. Police opposed Barling’s application for bail, saying he was an unacceptable risk. The court was told Barling was living at a Ballarat facility that met his needs, but he was free to come and go. Defence barrister Vincent Peters said his client’s medication lapsed at the time of the fire but he had now settled well. He said Barling experienced anxiety and schizophrenia. Magistrate Gregory Robinson refused bail, suggesting Barling would be regulated more in prison than the Ballarat aged care facility.

Taking a shot at sport Darley cousins Hollie and Tarkyn have been having a ball with Specialist Hoops. The eight-year-olds joined the Melton basketball clinic for children with special needs a month ago – and the benefits have been staggering. Hollie has mild cerebral palsy and uses a leg brace. She says she’s really enjoyed playing a sport without a competitive edge. “I enjoy getting to meet all the people who are there and having a good time,” Hollie says. And although she plays in all positions, her favourite is “centre”. Her mum, Fiona O’Rourke said Hollie has been thriving at the clinic. She said being able to play a sport has improved her daughter’s self-confidence and self-esteem. For Tarkyn, the clinic has been a real game changer. The Darley boy’s mobility has improved and fitness levels increased.

His mum Mel O’Rourke describes Tarkyn as being “a lot calmer” at home. “Tarkyn is really chuffed,” Ms O’Rourke said. “He’s quite proud of himself and what he’s accomplished. “In this environment, it’s … safe and inclusive and that gives us a safe space to let him run and just be a part of it.” Specialist Hoops is inviting anyone interested in joining, or donating, to visit facebook.com/ allabilitiesbasketballmelton Sumeyya Ilanbey

Fines used to fix roads

Myrniong Mechanics Hall president Graeme Hastings, husband of Denise, in front of the mural. (Shawn Smits)

Mural magic completed By Sumeyya Ilanbey The completion of a mural at the Myrniong Mechanics Hall has been more than a decade in the making for local artist Denise Hastings. Hastings began painting the mural 15 years ago but as she battled cancer twice, the work of art went unfinished. Early this month she returned to complete the colourful artwork. “There will always be little things and I’m sure in 15 years’ time I might think that piece

of grass needs work,” Ms Hasting said. “But for the most part, it now stands as a finished work. “Before, it looked OK. Now it looks so much better.” Hastings drew inspiration from the savannah of Kenya for the mural. She said she wanted to bring a little of Africa to Myrniong. Hastings visited Melbourne Zoo to sketch animals and find out about their habitats. She says it took a while to perfect the mural’s details and dimensions, but that it had been worth it.

The recent additions include clouds, a few birds, blades of grass and some bugs. Hastings said the paint she had been using had dried up, so Wilson’s Home Timber and Hardware, in Bacchus Marsh, donated a few tins to get the job completed. Myrniong Mechanics Hall president Mark Powell said the mural was loved by all, including those who used the hall for events and functions. “It was almost good enough as it was, but now that she’s finished it, it’s fantastic,” he said.

Money raised from speeding cameras and on-the-spot fines will be used to fix suburban and country roads. The state government last week introduced laws to establish the Better Roads Victoria Fund to re-direct fine revenue to road upgrades. Under the new laws, outer-suburban and country roads will each receive at least one-third of the funds. The remaining money will be used to repair and upgrade roads and level crossings anywhere in the state. The state government said this would enable VicRoads to divert its resources to areas in most need, and guarantee money raised from fines and speed cameras will go back to the community. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the legislation would ensure suburban and country roads were upgraded and fixed, irrespective of VicRoads’ funding priorities. “In 2014, we said we’d spend $2 billion over eight years to fix roads in the outer suburbs and in country Victoria – we’ve already delivered and far exceeded that commitment,” he said. The commitment follows the release of an interim report into VicRoads’ management of country roads. The report found regional and rural roads were in poor condition after being neglected for too long. The Coalition has been contacted for comment. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Tragedies for Melton roads By Sumeyya Ilanbey Two people have been killed on Melton roads in the past week. A Melton South woman died in hospital last Monday following a collision in Ravenhall earlier this month. Police say the 31-year-old woman stopped her car on the left lane of the Western Freeway, near the Deer Park off-ramps, and was hit by another car travelling down the freeway about 5.30am on Saturday, August 4. The woman was taken to hospital, where she later died.

The driver of the other car, a 28-year-old Brookfield man, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for observation. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating. Meanwhile, police have charged a 32-year-old Melton man following a fatal collision involving a motorcyclist in Melton West last Tuesday. A motorcycle was travelling south along Bulmans Road about 6.45am when it turned onto High Street, veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a car.

The male motorcyclist, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured and stopped to help. Police made an appeal for two other people – a driver of a black car and a second motorcyclist – they believed could assist them with their inquiries. On Friday, police charged a 32-year-old, who they allege was riding in company with the deceased rider, with dangerous driving causing death, reckless conduct endangering life, theft of motor vehicle and other traffic offences.

The fatal accident scene on Bulmans Road left a wide trail of debris. (Marcus Bevis, M4 Photographers)

Call to move bus route questioned the safety of having a bus stop on a narrow suburban street. “At the end of the day, they’re risking drivers’ safety,” he said. Public Transport Victoria is responsible for reviewing bus services and routes. Its spokesman John Lindsay said the service had been travelling through Skipton Street since 2007, and prior to Mr Young’s complaint, hadn’t received any criticisms. Mr Lindsay said removing the route from Skipton Street would also remove it from Kirkton Drive, creating a gap in coverage. “Safety is always our first priority and we will investigate this reported incident with the bus operator,” Mr Lindsay said. “Buses have been travelling down Skipton Street for more than a decade with no record of incidents.”

A Kurunjang man says he’s had several near misses with buses travelling down a “narrow” Kurunjang street. Steven Young was driving west on Skipton Street last week, when he was “almost taken out by a bus” travelling in the opposite direction. He claims he’s had to drive over the gutter and nature strips to avoid the bus. He has written to the bus company, asking for the route to be reviewed. “Skipton Street is far too narrow for a major bus route,” Mr Young says. “It … barely allows for standard cars to pass each other safely. “Because of the length of the bus, it severely cuts across the road as it travels around through the curve [near Dalray Crescent] travelling [west] and when travelling [east] it has to come across towards oncoming traffic to navigate the curve.” Mr Young said he understood the bus stop on Skipton Street is used fairly regularly, but

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Each year, on Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Day, we pause to reflect, and show respect, to those who fought for their country in what can only be described as horrific conditions. Almost 60,000 Australians served in the Vietnam War. It cost the lives of 521 men, while a further 3,000 were wounded. This Saturday 18 August, on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, I encourage everyone to remember the brave soldiers who were lost on that day; celebrate the spirit, courage and resilience shown by the troops; and keep those who gave up their lives and their loved ones, in our hearts. Rockbank residents are invited to come to a drop-in session to find out more about the planned Rockbank Town Centre, on Thursday 23 August, 5pm—8pm, at Rockbank Hall.

Dust off your back-to-school essentials, and take part in the various activities taking place throughout Adult Learners Week betweeen 1-8 September. This year, people will be given the opportunity to discover a variety of different lessons, workshops and activities including beekeeping, international cooking, finance help and innovative recycling. Place of Worship planning application feedback sought Melton City Council at its meeting on 30 April 2018, considered a planning permit application for a place of worship at 171-197 Harkness Road, Harkness. Council resolved the matter be deferred for no less than four months to give Council officers time to source expert opinions and advice, and undertake further community consultation. Prior to the four-month period lapsing, the applicants lodged an Application for Review with VCAT, to commence on 22 October 2018. Council is seeking further feedback to assist in its assessment and determination of the application. Feedback should be sent to planningsupport@melton.vic.gov.au by 28 August 2018. Cr Steve Abboushi Like many residents, I’ve been monitoring the progress of the Westwood Drive upgrade project, which will see the construction of a bridge and 950m of new road between Tenterfield Drive and Fydler Avenue, Burnside, along with connecting paths, and noise walls. It’s great to see so much activity taking place on this long-awaited project. I was particularly thrilled when the support beams for the bridge were lowered into place last month, and with this stage of construction complete, the project really is taking shape. When opened early next year, the new road and bridge will take significant pressure off Caroline Springs Boulevard and Gourlay Road, alleviating congestion and creating an easier commute through our community—a huge plus for residents and visitors alike.

Another significant infrastructure project that’s about to begin is the Light-up Lake Caroline initiative, which will see 72 x 4.5m high light poles installed along the 1.9km pedestrian path around the lake. The $750,000 project was developed in response to community feedback, indicating that better lighting would increase confidence and encourage residents to make better use of this outstanding public space. Melton defies dental wait pain By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton is bucking state averages for public dental care, with the electorate having one of Victoria’s shortest waiting times. The waiting time for general dental care in the state electorate of Melton is 18.3 months, compared with the state average of 19.7 months. The longest waiting time for general dental care in Melton was 21 months, compared with the state average of 48 months. The municipality’s public dental care is provided by Djerriwarrh Health Services. In

the past four years, it’s seen an increase in the number of people waiting for dental care, but the number of emergency patients it’s treating is steadily declining. The figures have been obtained by the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) through freedom of information requests in a bid to highlight the lengthy waiting times in the public system. ADAVB chief executive Matt Hopcraft said Dental Health Week (August 6-12) was “the perfect time” to shed light on the sorry state of public dental waiting list times. “People who are eligible for public dental

care may have to endure pain, have difficulty speaking and eating, miss school, struggle to find a job or develop other serious health problems,” Associate Professor Hopcraft said. While people are waiting for public dental care, existing dental problems could worsen, he said. Consequently, more than one-third of public dental care in Victoria is for emergency treatment rather than routine care. The ADAVB is calling on the state and federal governments to increase their funding for public dental care. The state and federal governments are

blaming each other for the decay of dental health services. A spokesman for federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said the Andrews government had “failed to properly manage waiting times”. But a spokeswoman for state Health Minister Jill Hennessy accused the federal government of slashing public dental funding by 30 per cent. “The federal Liberals have abandoned Djerriwarrh when it comes to oral and dental health care,” the spokeswoman said. “We’d urge them to come to the table and repair a system they’ve left in disrepair.”

Local footy scores cash AFL Victoria will pitch in $200,000 for major sports reserve upgrades at Melton and Eynesbury. AFL Victoria strategy, government and infrastructure manager Shayne Ward announced the pledge last Wednesday. The organisation will give $100,000 towards the MacPherson Park redevelopment and $100,000 for the construction of the Eynesbury Recreation Reserve. The outdated MacPherson Park facilities are grossly outdated, and will receive a major $9 million overhaul. The upgrades will include female-friendly changerooms, umpire rooms, kitchen facilities and a pavilion. Mr Ward said AFL Victoria was committed to improving standards for local football clubs. “As participation in our game continues to

grow, so does the need for facilities to support not only the growth, but the changing profile of participation,” Mr Ward said. MacPherson Park is the home ground for the Melton Football Netball Club. The club’s president Greg Davis said he was thrilled with AFL Victoria’s contribution. “Our rooms are 50 years old and we, as a club, built most of it ourselves so it really is in need of renovations,” Mr Davis said. Autism prison claims ‘ludicrous’ By Tate Papworth Claims that people with autism are being housed in prisons have been rubbished by state Housing, Disability and Ageing Minister Martin Foley. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn raised the issue in Parliament last week after attending a protest rally created by a group seeking assurances on the future of service provider Autism Plus. “What I am particularly concerned about is that last night it became clear to me that there

are, it would seem, 72 Victorians currently being housed in Victorian prisons simply due to having autism,” Mr Finn said. “There are 72 people in prisons in Victoria because they have autism and there is nowhere else for them to go. This is a scandal of enormous proportions if true. “So I am asking the premier, given that those in the autism community have very little faith in Minister Foley, particularly after this massive stuff-up with Autism Plus, to institute a full independent investigation, not just into Autism Plus and the services they provide

but also into this allegation that there are 72 people in prisons purely because they have autism.” Mr Foley labelled the suggestion as ludicrous. “These comments are disgraceful and Mr Finn should apologise for equating autism with a criminal offence,” he said. “We don’t lock people away for having autism spectrum disorder – the suggestion that we would is ludicrous. “There are a number of forensic disability services available for people in the justice system to ensure those with a disability receive

appropriate treatment and support while serving their sentence.” An administrator was appointed to oversee Autism Plus services after concerns were raised regarding its performance. The administrator is undertaking a process to find an alternative provider. The move has led to a number of concerns from parents and carers, who are happy with the service provider, but Mr Foley said the quality of care wouldn’t diminish. “I want to reassure the families that quality of service and care will continue for their loved ones as we work through this process,” he said.

Bridging cultures An art company has been awarded a $120,000 grant to create a light-box installation focusing on the West Gate Bridge as part of the Art & Industry Festival. Donna Jackson’s Hubcap Productions will use the VicArts grant for the outside gallery, to be created by Melton artist Bindi Cole Chocka, and three more exhibitions over the next two years. The light-box installation will be launched in Paine Reserve to coincide with the festival’s opening in mid-November. Jackson said light-boxes containing contemporary images of the West Gate Bridge would be put on the back of Vinnies and Seagulls hotel in Newport. She said the project stemmed from a collaboration with indigenous musician James Henry (Jimmy Little’s grandson) who recorded sounds in and around West Gate Bridge and a film shot by Chocka driving

across the bridge. “It’s a bridge between indigenous/ non-indigenous culture and our story of the bridge and the bridge collapse,” Jackson said. Chocka said the West Gate Bridge encapsulated links between art and labour. The Art & Industry Festival will be held in Hobsons Bay from November 16-25. Goya Dmytryshchak

Driving force to help farmers By Goya Dmytryshchak A western suburbs trucking business is aiming to raise $10,000 for drought-stricken farmers. Henry Transport Group (HTG), based in Altona North and Truganina, is donating $10 from every tow job it completes in August to Buy a Bale. Buy a Bale, run by Rural Aid, is supplying emergency hay to New South Wales and Queensland families struggling to keep cattle, sheep and horses alive through one of the worst droughts in living memory.

‘‘

The rate of suicide in rural areas is through the - Tyson Beckwith roof

’’

HTG operations manager Tyson Beckwith said the company wanted to help working class people who were struggling to keep animals and crops alive. “Most people I know have been touched by suicide – I had an uncle who committed suicide … the rate of suicide in rural areas is through the roof,” he said. “Most of the guys here are in their 30s and 40s – we kind of remember an Australia where farming was the backbone of the country and farmers were respected and admired, and it seems like they’re getting a little bit forgotten.” The family business last month completed more than 900 jobs and aims to reach 10,000 jobs for August. About 80 per cent of the company’s business is machinery towing for construction and development projects.

General manager Brent Henry (front) with operations manager Tyson Beckwith. (Damjan Janevski)

Mr Beckwith said a donation of $10,000 to Buy a Bale would be able to provide more than 460,000 litres of water to farmers. “Ten dollars doesn’t sound like much but

we do a lot of turnover so it can become quite significant,” he said. “Hopefully, it inspires other businesses to do similar.”

Buy a Bale was founded five years ago by Charles Alder and his wife Tracy, after they read about Queensland farmers having to shoot their cattle during a drought.

MY PLACE Christopher Carroll is a past president, and current member, of the Ballan Rotary Club. He speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey about life in Moorabool. What’s your connection to Moorabool?

The White Night. That was an initiative of the Wombat arts group and was basically looking at lighting projections at night – similar to what happens in Ballarat and Melbourne. They got together, and attracted thousands of people to Ballan in June this year. That was a great initiative and Rotary was able to help with funding for that. There was another thing we did – a young Moorabool father was killed in a car accident earlier this year and left a child and mum on their own. The Rotary raised over $8000 to try and help the mum get back on her feet. Another recent thing we did was a roadside clean-up of the Old Melbourne Road, going to Ballan. We did a clean up on both sides of the road and we collected many, many large bags full of rubbish. Ballan Rotary, along with many other Rotary clubs, are in the process of donating to assist farmers in a range of ways.

I originally had a farm at Ingliston … and then shifted down to Bacchus Marsh to look after grandchildren. I’ve been in Bacchus Marsh for 12 months, and was living in Ingliston for five years. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool?

What would you change about the area if you could? It’s really changing so I wouldn’t know if you would go out and deliberately change anything. In theory, you could say ‘I wish things would happen now’ but realistically there’s a planning and approvals process. One can always wish for better roads … and people can get overly focused on potholes, but it’s the other things that really matter. There

(Marco De Luca)

I suppose I find Ballan very interesting … because there’s considerable change happening, especially in Ballan and Bacchus Marsh. And generally people love the idea of change but many people seem reluctant at times. They always welcome the new ideas that come in and some of the extra services … but are worried about the inconvenience happening with road constructions. On the Ballan side, and with the Rotary Club, it’s been really good to be able to support the local hospital … supporting the Wombat Arts group with a whole range of creative ideas … all of these things are great things that are happening. are a lot of great people and even though a pothole is annoying, in the scale of things, it’s not that bad. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? I enjoy being very central [in Bacchus Marsh] and the ease of access to service … I love to go for a coffee to the Mill Rose Cottage – that’s a

great place and it’s a great initiative what they’ve done all around the arts and crafts, and a good cafe and restaurant experience. The owners bought that place over 25 years ago – they first saw the cottage, that’s now the restaurant, and renovated it by hand and now they’ve managed to grow it steadily. What has been your most memorable moment at the Ballan Rotary Club?

What kind of improvements would you like to see at the Ballan Rotary Club? Support getting younger people into the club – that has been one of the main challenges. I can understand that young couples are working and making the time to come along to meetings can be hard, but they don’t necessarily need to come to all meetings. What’s one thing people would be surprised to find out about you? I’ve surprised myself on how patient I can be with my grandchildren. I think my children would say ‘How come you weren’t quite as patient with us?’

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is bowled over by a new eatery Yarraville village’s long-standing Chinese restaurant has gone. Truth is, it went some time ago and Coracle has taken a while to arise at the same location. The place is beautifully fitted out, mostly in blacks and whites and pale wood, with the big windows letting the light pour in. In the months leading up to its unveiling, the name alone conveyed little information about what would be the nature of the new place … so the outcome is a bit of a surprise. Let’s call it, definitely for want of a better phrase, Asian fusion. There’s a nice, tight list of breakfast items on the menu; and there’s brunchy things such as Vietnamese-style poached salad and “Super Green Gyoza”. There’s banh mi, too. Yes, $10 is a whack more than you’ll pay for banh mi in Footscray or St Albans, but the ones we see being inhaled around us look fabulous. The more substantial heart of the menu, though, is the line-up of seven Coracle Bowls. Yes, these are by way of the poke bowl trend – but Coracle’s efforts transcend just about all else we’ve tried. On the one hand, the Coracle kitchen crew appear to work with the same basic toppings for each bowl offering, with individual tweaks as advertised. On the other, there are super smarts at work here that kick our meals – three bowls over two visits – up and into the realms of magic. The bento bowl ($17) is brilliant in every way.

CORACLE CAFE RESTAURANT Address: 63-65 Anderson Street, Yarraville Phone: 9315 1411 The foundational success of every Coracle bowl very much appears to be the nuttiness of the brown rice bases. But the excellent toppings complete the job by sheer dint of quality and – equally important – by their deft apportioning. Dressed salmon cubes, kale in sesame oil, two kinds of pickle, tobiko, broad beans, seaweed salad and more – all taste as mighty fine as they look. Bennie enjoys his Korean bowl ($16.50), with excellent bulgogi beef. Though he opines that more by way of starker flavour and texture contrast would’ve made him even happier. The vegan bowl ($16.50) is good, too, though what are listed as “tempura seasonal vegetables” are quite a long way from crunchy battered. We are having such a fine Saturday lunch time we go the whole hog with the Coracle brownies ($6). These don’t look anything special. But the eating of what is both moist and chewy is of immense, top-quality choc pleasure. The brownies are sluiced down with very good cafe lattes ($4). Stylish, timeless, large and on an impressive block measuring about 864 square metres, this may be the forever home you’ve been looking for. The extensive floor plan includes the family zone, with a tiled kitchen, meals and lounge area, a second lounge as well as a theatre room and separate study. The kitchen is large and has a 900mm stainless-steel oven, stone benches and contemporary cabinetry including a walk-in pantry. Four carpeted bedrooms are also part of this great package; all with built-in robes save the main bedroom which has a walk-in robe and an en suite. A formal dining room could be converted to a fifth bedroom. The large decked pergola has a pitched roof, flooring and looks out to a large lawn with neat and attractive garden beds. The double garage is complemented by a side drive for a boat or caravan. Winter’s nights can be enjoyed at the firepit.

Here is a great family pad with all the space you’re looking for – including and maybe even especially – a huge yard (about 1121 squares) with secure high fencing. Perfect for a big family with small and big kids, there are five bedrooms with built-in robes and all carpeted and of a good size. The main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in-robe. Two living areas, a lounge with a gas fireplace, a good-sized kitchen and a carport for two cars are all part of the package. The kitchen has been renovated and looks great, with a 900mm stainless-steel oven, gas cooktop plus a dishwasher and it all overlooks the meals and lounge room. Storage, a split-system, a garden shed and a flourishing vegie patch are also part of the package. It’s a great offering for a family looking for a property to build on in the years to come.

Enjoy the warm community feel living in this tucked away neighbourhood of well looked-after homes. The house’s interiors ooze comfort, with plush neutral carpeting, complementary wall colours and attention to detail in every room. The neat and tidy contemporary kitchen has timber floors, stainless-steel appliances and loads of storage. The lounge room has a potbelly-style gas heater and the meals area is large. A second living room is also carpeted. There are three generous and carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes, including the main with walk-in robe. The central bathroom has a contemporary and timeless fit-out. Outside there’s a roomy decked area with views of the parkland behind the block. A double garage has a workshop area, while an attractive garden setting is another feature.

In a quiet part of Melton with no through traffic, yet close to shopping, schools and recreation, this light-filled family property is the complete package. The spaces are bright, welcoming. In the residential growth zone schedule one, development is a possibility (STCA) thanks to the wide and deep block. There’s a deep and decked undercover back porch, an established garden, a carport for two cars plus a separate shed-style double garage-cum-workshop. Back inside, find three bedrooms with built-in robes and a large central bathroom. It’s a great house, with that 1980s aesthetic including large timber and glass sliding doors letting in views of the garden and creating a homey atmosphere.

Property of the week

EYNESBURY 6 Benalla Avenue, 3338 Sweeney Melton: 8746 2055

Price: $879,000 – $919,000

This is one of those lovely dwellings that seem to proliferate in sleepy Eynesbury – the kind with great kerbside appeal, bright contemporary interiors and manicured backyards with unimpeded golf course views. In this case, it’s the 16th green where grey box forest can be seen in the distance, as well as an iron wool shed, emblematic of the town’s history. Beyond gardens and a sealed aggregate driveway to the drive-through double garage, entry is under a verandah to an entry way with floating floorboards. Double doors to the left reveal a grey-carpeted

lounge room with the same pearl-grey wall paint and white plantation shutters as seen all through. The hall then ducks right to two fitted bedrooms with ceiling fans, a separate toilet and dual-basin main bathroom. The fourth bedroom, ideally set up with an en suite for guests, is down an open hallway off the family sitting area, as is the laundry with french-door closet and airing rails. Under a plaster vaulted ceiling at the head of carpeted stairs is a parent retreat/ study area that adjoins the bedroom behind double doors. This has a large fitted dressing room and a sumptuous en suite

with freestanding oval tub, a big walk-in shower and dual vanity basins. Each space has a vaulted ceiling and an electric panel heater keeps tub time warm and cosy. It doesn’t end there. Parents also get a deck-floored balcony, enclosed with banks of full-height windows affording those golf course views. A ceiling fan and plantation shutters for air flow add to the luxe comfort. Back downstairs, the well-proportioned light-filled living hub, with windows dressed in either pearl-grey roman blinds or quality drapes, incorporates the entertainer’s kitchen. It has a fab black Smeg 900mm

steam oven with gas/induction cooktop, a stone-topped island bench, white panelled cabinetry, a Smeg dishwasher and a cupboard pantry with opaque-glass doors. French doors from the dining area open to a deck covered with a Vergola. This looks out to spacious and lush lawn rimmed with gardens, while a crazy-paved pathway heads to a firepit area with tiled curved seating. The property is 15 minutes from Melton station and 10 from Exford Primary School, with the trip through protected forest an uplifting one. SPORT Novices lead the way By Tara Murray Burnside Heights is one win away from a fairy tale first season in the Essendon District Football League Women’s competition. The Bears did not expect to be among the top teams, let alone in a grand final as more than half their team has never played before. But with just one loss for the season, that is exactly where they find themselves this weekend. Bears president Justin Peagram said they could not have predicted the season they have had. “We’ve got a lot of quality players, but over half the team is made up of novices,” he said. “I don’t think we get enough credit. Everyone has played their role and it’s blown us away. “We thought we would win a couple of games.” The Bears won through to the grand final with a hard-fought win against Westmeadows on Sunday. In a low scoring game, the Bears prevailed with 3.6 (24)-3.4 (4) 22. Peagram said a tricky wind made it difficult for both teams to score. He said while it was pretty close all day, he thought they were in control of the game. “Westmeadows had an outstanding game,” he said. “They had two or three back when we had the wind and made it hard to get the forward structure. “It was a dog fight until the end. We were always probably going to win, but they made it uncomfortable.” Peagram said it was an even contribution from the side. He said Sina Mason, Allison Chivell, Laycee Eustace, Kayla Ravanello, Krissy Tran and Ebony Stevens all contributed at key moments. Peagram said he hoped winning the preliminary final would add to their momentum. Between byes and forfeits, the Bears have struggled with consistency. “We haven’t had enough games under the belt,” he said. “The second half of both finals, our ball movement has been better. We started to get the mojo together and played well.” The Bears face Pascoe Vale in the grand final on Sunday at Windy Hill. Pascoe Vale defeated Sunbury Kangaroos, 6.11 (47)-0.1 (1) in the other preliminary final. The Bears’ only loss of the season came against the Panthers, by 13 points.

Western Jets’ Stefan Radovanovic has been selected to take part in the AFL state combine ahead of the AFL national draft later this year. Radovanovic was the only Jets’ player selected for the state or rookie combines. Jets’ teammates Zak Butters Daly Andrews, Buku Khamis and Xavier O’Halloran have all previously received invites to the AFL national combine.

Ballarat NL

Bacchus Marsh pushed ladder leaders Sunbury Lions all the way in the Ballarat Netball League. Scores were level at quarter-time, before the Lions pushed the margin out to a five-goal lead at the half-time. The Cobras got the margin closer in both the third and fourth quarters, but the Lions’ experience shone through and they won 45-39. Melton almost came away with its first win of the season, losing to Ballarat 41-37.

RDFL

Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list in the Riddell District Football League. The Burras had no troubles accounting for Broadford, 26.10 (166)-7.6 (48). The Burras sit fourth heading into the final round. Meanwhile, Melton Centrals lost to Rupertswood 17.6 (108)-5.6 (36) and Rockbank lost to Woodend-Hesket 26.19 (175)-3.10 (28).

“The girls are champing at the bit and really eager for the game,” Peagram said. “Pascoe Vale will be front runners, but grand finals are funny things.” It was a good weekend for the Bears as their under-13 boys claimed the premiership in their division. The senior men defeated Coburg Districts, 17.10 (112)-15.15 (105).

In division 1, Hillside replaced Taylors Lakes in the top four after defeating Jacana, 16.13 (109)-9.7 (61). As a result Taylors Lakes may miss the finals, as they are one game and a lot of percentage outside the top three. Keilor is on top in premier division, after beating Maribyrnong Park 14.14 (98)-9.8 (62).

Bacchus Marsh’s hopes of going back-to-back in the Gisborne District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup competition have received a boost. The Bulls announced last week that Madushanka Ekanayake would return to the Bulls for a third season. Ekanayake was a key in the Bulls premiership, taking 58 wickets at an average of 8.9 leading the competition’s bowling average. He was named best on field by the umpires in the grand final. Titans put the call out for a new women’s side North Western Titans are looking to take the next step by forming a women’s baseball team this season. After one of their biggest seasons, the Melton-based club wants to expand to make the sport available for everyone. Titans president Jeff Ostler, who will coach the side, said they were keen to have a women’s team this season. He said they are planning to enter a side in the Baseball Victoria summer league competition starting in October. It would be in the same competition and level as the men’s side. “We’re trying to get one up and running,” he said. “We’re in a good growth area and there’s a lot of potential. “We’ve got about 10 girls who are already interested and we are looking at entering the side in division 3. “We’ve sent out a few messages on Facebook groups in the Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury area.” Ostler, who has more than 25 years experience in baseball, said they were looking

for players from all ability levels. It will be the first time he has coached a women’s side, after previously coaching men’s and juniors. The side is presently training on Sundays, but will move to mid-week sessions closer to the season start. Ostler said they were starting with the basics and would go from there. Among those who are turning up to training are a couple of secondary college students and some wives and girlfriends of male players. “I’ve got a passion to help give back,” Ostler said. “We’ve gone really basic as we’ve got players who haven’t played. Everyone who has come down has stuck around.” Long term, Ostler said they would love to have local players who are playing in higher levels playing with the team. It looks like it will be a big season for the Titans, with the club planning to have three junior sides, as well as three senior men’s teams, up from two last season. Finals berth leaves Rockbank ‘absolutely stoked’ Rockbank will play A-grade finals for the first time in the Riddell District Netball League. The Rams, who have long been one of the lesser sides in the competition, sealed a finals berth on Saturday with one round remaining. The Rams got the job done with a solid win against Woodend-Hesket. Having lost to the Hawks last time round, the Rams were intent on making sure there would be no repeat. They built their lead through every quarter, eventually winning 55-44. Rebecca Hicks shot 30 goals from 38 attempts, while Isabella Maguire came on at half-time and shot 18 goals at 100 per cent. Rams’ spokesman Gavin Sporle said the club couldn’t be happier for the side, which it believed could have an impact come finals time. “We are absolutely stoked,” he said. “The under-19s look like they will be playing finals for a second year and the C-grade side are still a chance.

“We’re rapt … it’s a success for the club to hopefully have three sides in finals.” The C-grade side sits a game outside the top six, with sixth-placed Lancefield to play the top side and the Rams facing the bottom side, the Sunbury Kangaroos. The Rams’ under-19 team sits in fifth. The quest to play A-grade finals hasn’t been a smooth one, with the club parting ways with coach Lizzy Masterson last week. Sporle said a difference of opinion had come to a head and in the end the decision was made to go their separate ways. “At the end of the day, it was a really tough situation,” he said. “Lizzy has done an absolutely superb job over the last two years. I’m really disappointed with the way things ended.” Co-captains Mary Brodie and Rianne Vining will coach the side for the rest of the season. Diggers Rest added another win to its tally, but it wasn’t enough to keep it in finals contention.

The Burras were never in any trouble against Broadford, leading by 10 goals at quarter-time. They won every quarter on the way to a 49-27 victory. Melton Centrals’ tough season continued with a big loss to Rupertswood. After an even first quarter, Rupertswood turned the game in its favour by hitting 11 second-quarter goals to Centrals’ four. The finals-bound Sharks extended the lead in the second half to secure a 46-25 win. Rebecca Morabito was named Centrals’ best. In other results, Macedon remains undefeated after a 44-43 thriller against Wallan and Romsey beat Riddell 53-50. Tara Murray

Cobras steady for finals By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh showed some of its best form as it returned to the winners’ list in the Ballarat Football League. After dropping three straight matches, including two they could have quite easily won, the Cobras were left with a must-win match against the Sunbury Lions. It looked set to be a challenge for the Cobras as the Lions were fighting to move back into the top six. The Cobras were up for it and the game was over at quarter-time after they came out firing for a six-goals-to-nil first quarter. The Cobras maintained that momentum for a final score of 15.8 (98)-6.12 (48). Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said the big difference from the past couple of weeks was that the players had taken their chances. “Today we created opportunities early and worked really hard and we took some, which made a difference,” he said. “I thought we played a little bit better than we had been, I sort of saw it coming. “Clarke Oval provides plenty of space and I thought we moved the ball better than we had most of the year and that helped. “We’ve been a little bit too predictable with how we’ve moved the footy, today we just swung it around a bit more and used it better.” Hodgson said clean ball work was another standout. Jake Owen kicked four goals for the Cobras, while Ben Speight, Aaron Willitts and Hamish Coulton all kicked three each. Hodgson said they had a number of standouts across the board. He said Nicholas Stuhldreier, Jacob and Matthew Chisari, Logan Blundell, Billy Griffiths and Dylon Bishop all played well. The one negative for the Cobras was a hamstring injury to Jacob Chisari in the last 10 minutes. The win keeps the Cobras in third spot, with an opportunity to finish top two and earn a double chance. The Cobras face Sebastopol and Melton, which are both still in the finals’ hunt, in the run home. Hodgson said he hoped Saturday’s performance was the start of something. “It’s one of those things, we had come back to the pack and had we lost today, we would have dropped to four or five. “Half way though the year there was a huge expectation on us and all the pressure that came with it. Maybe we didn’t handle it as well as we would have liked. “If you looked at last year, we were on top of the world at this part of the year and then the season unravelled quickly in the space of two weeks. “Fortunately for us we’ve been through that 38 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 14, 2018

period and with a bit of luck, hopefully we’ll play our best footy when it counts most.” Another side closer to sealing a finals berth is Melton. Looking to play finals for the first time in a number of years, the Bloods defeated

Ballarat, 13.8 (86)-8.10 (58). Mark Orr and Braedan Kight kicked four goals each for the Bloods. The Bloods are two games and percentage clear of seventh, with two games remaining.

Melton South gets to grips with the future Melton South Football Netball Club is at a crossroads and initiating a dialogue about how it will move forward in the coming years. The Ballarat Football League club posted on its website and social media pages that it will hold a special general meeting for club members to discuss club structure and affiliation. Panthers president Brendan Morrissey said the club was focused on having an open conversation about all aspects of the club. He said the meeting, on Monday, August 20, didn’t necessarily mean the club was looking to move leagues, but simply that it was assessing all options. The Panthers have enjoyed a single win in the BFL season. “We’ll talk about all aspects of the club,” Morrissey said. “Affiliation with the league, affiliation with the juniors – it’s what we need to do. “We’re looking at everything from footy structures to where we are playing. It’s such an uneven playing field and it’s hard to get off the bottom. “It’s about discovery and looking at what the club will look like in 10 years.” Morrissey said the club had spoken to neighbouring leagues and clubs to help get information about what the football environment would look like moving forward. Among those the club has spoken to is the Western Region Football League. Morrissey said the biggest concern for the club moving forward was the ability to retain young players. He said clubs from neighbouring leagues were poaching young players with money offers that Melton South was unable to match. “They’re playing one season of seniors and are looking like bright talents, and then are offered money to go elsewhere,” he said. “Other leagues around us have higher salary caps, which makes it harder for us.” Morrissey said the challenges were set to get harder with Melton and the surrounding areas growing and the possibility of new teams in the area. He said as the club was in the old part of town, it was unlikely to attract new residents, who would likely look at clubs closer to them. Tara Murray

It’s do or die for Melton By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds will have to do it the hard way if they are to win through to the Big V men’s division 2 basketball grand final. The Thoroughbreds trail their best-of-three semi-final series against Coburg Giants 1-0 after going down in a thriller in front of a big Melton crowd. After the two teams traded baskets for all the last quarter, the Giants regained the lead through a three-pointer in the last minute to grab a 66-65 win. Thoroughbreds coach Joe Hooks said the loss stung. He said they weren’t able to execute down the stretch when it was required. “The boys played hard, but they lost sight of the game plan towards the end,” he said. “It wasn’t about the other team – it was about what we did. “The boys felt like they didn’t handle what they were meant to do at the end.” Hooks said the performance wasn’t one of their best and that they still had a lot more to give. He was full of praise for Coburg. “I tip my hat to Coburg,” he said. “I thought we saw the best of them. “To be honest, we were not playing the best basketball and I don’t know how we were that close. If we can take that and build for the next two games …” Dexter Graham top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 23 points, while three of the other four starters scored double figures. Hooks said Mangar Manyang, who scored 13 points and had nine rebounds, was the most consistent player on the night. He said they would look to put in two really strong practices during the week before game two and, if needed, game three. Coburg will host both those games and Hooks is expecting some of the Melton crowd to make the trip. Hooks said they were by no means out of the series and had a couple of things fallen their way, they could have been 1-0 up. “I’m really confident in the side and I still believe we can do it,” he said. “It’s do or die – otherwise it’s the end of the season. “We have no choice but to come out and pull it off. I’ll preach the same things as I have all season. “We have to stay focused to get the win.” Mildura Heat, the lowest-ranked team left alive, took a 1-0 lead in the other semi-final against Craigieburn Eagles. That match also went down the wire, with the Heat showing a little bit extra in the dying minutes to nail the win.

Emily Crawford was named the Cobras’ best on Sunday. (Shawn Smits)

Cobras ousted in tight final Bacchus Marsh is out of the AFL Goldfields Women’s finals after a heart-crushing loss to Gisborne on Sunday. The Cobras played out an elimination thriller against the Bulldogs in the battle between fifth and fourth. Having lost twice to the Bulldogs during the season meant little to the Cobras, who pushed all the way. While neither side was able to control the game, it was the Bulldogs who were in front at the final siren, with the scoreline reading 4.7 (31)-4.4 (28). The Cobras had the chance to win the game after the siren, but Madalyn Clarke slipped as she went to kick. Clarke kicked two goals for the Cobras, with Ashlee Wallis and Emily Crawford kicking one each. Crawford, Abbey Bertram, Macy and Zaylie Le Huray were named the Cobras’ best. Cobras football manager Rod Bertram said that considering how the year had gone for them, they were happy with a finals appearance. “I think it has been a successful year,” he said. “Playing in an elimination final was a bonus. We had so many new players. We had 12 players missing from our grand final [division 2] side from last year. Hopefully, the new players in the side will stay around next year.” The Cobras’ under-13 girls start finals this week. Tara Murray

Caroline Springs sticks to game plan with four finalists All four Caroline Springs senior sides will play finals in Hockey Victoria’s winter competition this year. While the regular season is still under way, the Springers have already sealed finals’ berths for their two women’s and two men’s sides. Women’s coach Ron Shadbolt said they were a little bit surprised to have all four teams in finals. Last year, the club’s first year, the two women’s sides won premierships, but the men’s side missed finals. “The bottom line is everyone in the club is rapt,” he said. “To have four teams in finals is a great effort.” On the women’s side, their top side in Vic League 2 is second with two rounds remaining. They can’t drop any lower and have secured a double chance come finals time. On Saturday they defeated Gippsland Bulls 4-2. Their second side, in Women’s Metro B west, sits on top of the ladder one point clear of Sunshine, which they drew with 1-1 at the weekend.

Shadbolt said this season had been a lot more difficult than last year. “We have done exceptionally well,” he said. “The ladies are over the moon and we’ve done it under duress. “We’ve had a huge number of injuries, with five of our best players out.” Shadbolt said Holly Azzopardi, Narelle Shadbolt and Lucy Steele were all out of the season. He said he hoped Laura Brown would return in the next few weeks. With the injuries, Shadbolt was realistic about the top side’s chances come finals time. He said with a tough run home, those players stepping up would have to quickly adjust. This weekend they face the top team, MHSOB. “We will be competitive, but I think we might struggle against the top team without having our core players,” he said. “We’ve still got five or six players who have finals’ experience and have played at a higher level. We will work hard and give a good account of ourselves.”

While unsure how the top side will go, Shadbolt was confident that the Metro side would perform well. Many players have been playing across both sides due to the injury count. “The Metro side has lifted their work rate and looking forward to finals,” he said. “I think Metros is our best chance.” The men’s Metro A North West had a 4-3 win against MHSOB on Sunday. The win has them sitting third, three points behind second. Meanwhile, the Metro B West team sits third. In other results, Melton’s men’s team had a 2-1 loss against Collegians- X in Vic League 3. The Mustangs sit fifth, one point outside the top four. In Vic League Women’s 2, Melton lost to ECHO 8-3. Tara Murray Caroline Springs is hoping to have Laura Brown back fit and firing for finals.
