Melton’s hospital crusade By Sumeyya Ilanbey

they get there, they face record queues waiting to be seen. “In medicine, minutes matter. Try holding your breath for five minutes. Time is precious in critical situations.” Melton Labor candidate Justin Mammarella said he was a big advocate for a public hospital in the region, having started a petition for it while Melton mayor in 2011. Liberal candidate Ryan Farrow said “not much” had changed in Melton because of its status as a safe Labor seat. He said the Liberal Party was “really receptive” about the public hospital plan and for “someone to fight for Melton”. Greens candidate Harkirat Singh said his party was supportive of healthcare infrastructure and if it held the balance of power, it would be in a position to push the government of the day for a Melton public hospital. The community is being urged to get behind the campaign by writing to politicians. Postcards have been designed and will be presented to state Parliament next month. Those unable to sign a postcard are being urged to go online to buildmeltonhospital.com.au and add their electronic signatures and share their stories.

A Melton hospital with an emergency department will save lives, according to a local GP. Dr Marcus Watson has helped Melton council launch its Build Melton Hospital, Invest in the West campaign, calling on political parties to commit to building a public hospital. Melton council wants funding for a feasibility study and a commitment to start construction by July, 2022. The major public campaign was launched last Thursday – 100 days from the state election. Suitable land for a hospital has already been identified in the Toolern Precinct Structure Plan, near the railway station that’s under construction. Melton council corporate services manager Peter Bean said the council was advocating for a public hospital that would include an emergency department, acute and specialist services and intensive care and surgery units. As part of its campaign, council will highlight the ability of a public hospital in Melton to reduce the pressure on Sunshine, Footscray and Werribee hospitals, which are more than 30 kilometres away, over-stretched and under-resourced. Dr Watson said that every day he was dealing with an “inadequate” public hospital system stretched beyond its limits. “Both western hospitals in Sunshine and Footscray are constantly overcrowded,” Dr Watson said. “There are long waits. And people who become acutely unwell in Melton face a 30-minute wait for an ambulance, a 40-minute drive to hospital and, when

Health fees hit the hip pocket By Sumeyya Ilanbey Patients are delaying or not going to see a GP because of the costs involved, according to recently published data. Six per cent of patients in Melbourne’s north-west, which includes Melton and Bacchus Marsh, say the cost of attending a GP is prohibitive, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data. The data shows that more than one-third of Melton and Bacchus Marsh residents have been slugged with out-of-pocket fees for

Medicare services, including visits to GPs and obstetricians in the past 12 months. Patients have on average forked out $116 for non-hospital related services, such as specialists, obstetricians, GPs and medical imaging, with some being charged more than $460 in the 2016-17 financial year. More than two-thirds of Melton and Bacchus Marsh patients were charged, on average $57, to see a specialist. And 19 per cent of patients were charged on average $12 for a visit to the GP. But it was a visit to an obstetrician that hit the hip pocket the hardest, with 25 per cent charged

on average of $177, and some more than $500. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president-elect Harry Nespolon said the data “emphasised” the need for urgent investment in preventative healthcare. “The reality is, long and complex consultations are not properly compensated by patients’ Medicare rebate,” Dr Nespolon said. “When a GP has the proper amount of time with a patient, we are able to properly treat the whole patient. An extra 10-30 minutes in a GP consult can mean that a condition is identified earlier or health risks like obesity

and mental health issues receive proper preventative treatment before a patient ends up with a more serious lifelong condition.” The Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association chief executive Alison Verhoeven said the report should be a “wake up” call to governments to ensure health reforms protect healthcare for everyone. “We do not want to go down the path of an Americanised system where the more you pay, the more access you have to care, and if you are poor, your access to care is limited,” Ms Verhoeven said.

The state government has allocated almost $1 million for a double-storey portable building at Melton South Primary School. The building, which will be air-conditioned and resemble a fully-fledged, state-of-the-art classroom will be ready for the next school year. The state government allocated more than $70 million in this year’s budget for “relocatable” buildings. Melton South Primary School, which is dealing with an explosion in student numbers, had missed out on upgrades in recent budgets. Upper house Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said “important new works” could now be undertaken, following the $947,000 commitment for a portable at the school. “We’re upgrading schools across Victoria so families can know that no matter where they live they can access a great local school the whole community is proud of,” Ms Pulford said. “The upgrade is about more than giving Melton South Primary School students the facilities they deserve. It’s also about helping build community pride in a great local school.” The Age revealed three years ago there would be a “massive migration” of portable classrooms to accommodate student numbers in growth corridors. An education department document stated the western metropolitan region received the highest number of portable transfers with 61 in 2012-13. Melton South Primary School was contacted for comment.

‘Unfair’ call on fines By Laura Michell A Melton business owner is calling for Melton council to stop issuing parking fines on High Street until it addresses the parking shortage in the area. Hayden Legro, principal lawyer at Hayden Legro Lawyers, is fed up with the parking shortage in the High Street business precinct brought on by council work to improve Wallace Square and Bakery Square. Mr Legro said the beautification works, which began in mid-May, have resulted in the loss of 150 parking spaces.

‘‘

Some … I know have copped four or five fines

’’

- Hayden Legro

He said the shortage had resulted in his staff and the owners and staff of neighbouring businesses being forced to park in two-hour spaces in a service lane or in all-day spaces that were a long walk from their offices and workplaces. “[We] have no option, given the lack of alternative carparking in the business district generally, but to run the gauntlet and change car parks two and three times a day on shortened parking time limits,” he said. “Some employees and business owners I know have copped four to five fines in some weeks. A number of business owners have expressed concerns about the safety of female employees having to walk long distances to and from back streets to their place of work, particularly at night in winter.” Mr Legro said it was unfair to issue parking fines to people affected by the works.

Hayden Legro is annoyed at the loss of carparks. (Marco De Luca)

“It is behoving on council to act fairly and reasonably in respect of fining people disadvantaged by council’s own works and I ask council to cease fining people in the High Street precinct until the works are completed,” he said. “The business parking shortage, which

has been growing for some years without being addressed, must now be dealt with. I have not been made aware of any plans of council for improved business parking for the High Street business precinct.” Melton council did not respond by deadline.

Draft plan open for discussion Reducing car reliance and improving pedestrian and cyclist safety will be a key focus in planning for the future Rockbank Town Centre, as outlined in a draft plan. Streets have been designed to reflect an “emphasis” on walking in the town centre, and accessing the nearby train station by foot, scooter, bus and car will be “seamless” Fourteen key principles have been identified for planning the town centre, including a focus on mixed land use, high-quality public spaces and sustainability. “Water will be collected, cleansed, infiltrated, and where possible harvested and used to support the landscapes and the people of Rockbank,” according to the draft plan. Members of the public are being invited to have their say on the plan. Melton mayor Bob Turner said: “We want to make sure Rockbank and surrounds can thrive … feedback is so important to achieving this.” Officers from the Ballarat Rail Project and Melton council will be at an information session this week to discuss the draft plan. The drop-in session will run from 5-8pm on Thursday, August 23, at Rockbank Hall, 24 Old Leakes Road. Those unable to attend can view the draft plan on Melton council’s website and comment until September 21. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Anger over tip ‘rubbish escape’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey The operators of the Ravenhall landfill could face legal action after rubbish was strewn across neighbouring properties recently. During wild weather earlier this month, garbage escaped from the Cleanaway-operated Melbourne Regional Landfill and on to surrounding land and streets. Winds were measured at 80km/h, but Environment Protection Authority chief executive Nial Finegan said those speeds had been forecast and appropriate action should

have been taken to ensure no rubbish escaped the site. As part of its licence to operate the landfill, Cleanaway must ensure no rubbish escapes its boundary. Stop the Tip campaigner Marion Martin said she was alerted to the “disgusting” sight by another resident on August 10. Ms Martin headed to the landfill, armed with her camera, to take pictures and notify EPA of Cleanaway’s breach of its licence. Six other complaints were made to the EPA. “This [rubbish escape] occurs regularly,”

Ms Martin said. “If you chuck a cigarette butt out of your car or a tissue and somebody dobs you in, you’ll get a hefty fine. But you’ve got a big company like Cleanaway that has all these restrictions and still doesn’t comply with its licence conditions.” Mr Finegan said he and local residents were aghast at what they’d seen. “EPA was very disappointed by the escape of litter at the Ravenhall [landfill] and took immediate action, with an officer on site as soon as possible on the day and the issuing of a statutory notice,”

Mr Finegan said. EPA’s pollution abatement notice requires Cleanaway to repair the fence along Middle Road. “The matter will be considered against EPA’s Compliance and Enforcement Policy,” Mr Finegan said. “This allows for a range of sanctions depending on culpability and environmental harm.” If found guilty of contravening pollution abatement notices, Cleanaway, can be taken to court and fined. Cleanaway was contacted for comment.

Building a place to call home By Sumeyya Ilanbey Five modular homes, plus a support service, will be built in Bacchus Marsh to provide temporary accommodation for rough sleepers. The state government has allocated $5 million for the Towards Home program, for Norlane, Dandenong and Bacchus Marsh. The money will go towards building 19 modular homes and multi-disciplinary support at each location. People experiencing long-term homelessness who have a connection to the area will be given priority to the homes, designed as a medium-term living arrangement for a

two-year period. The state government hopes this program will address some of the immediate housing shortage concerns and support people who are experiencing long-term homelessness find a place to call home. However, Salvation Army policy officer Kate Mecham said five temporary houses in Bacchus Marsh was not enough to deal with the homelessness crisis. The Salvation Army is calling on the state government to commit to providing long-term social housing, reiterating its call for 3000 social houses to be built every year for the next 30 years.

“In terms of the benefits of modular homes, they’re fine, they work for some people,” Ms Mecham said. “It’s not a bad initiative, but I just think, in the grand scheme of things and the current situation, it’s a drop in the bucket.” Ms Mecham said modular homes suited individuals who needed their own space for a little while, while they tried finding permanent accommodation. “It’s a fine initiative but not a long-term plan,” Ms Mecham said. Housing Minister Martin Foley said the sites for the homes were being finalised. “These new homes and the support network

connected to them will give people sleeping rough a pathway to permanent and stable housing as quickly as possible,” Mr Foley said. “We’re ensuring those at risk of, or experiencing homelessness, are supported in a targeted and holistic way.” The temporary homes will involve outreach teams working with the support staff to seek out and engage people experiencing homelessness to help them find emergency accommodation and health services, and offer them case management. The temporary homes will be managed by the agencies selected through the tender process. Tenders are open at www.tenders.vic.gov.au

Removing road blocks Most people take being able to drive for granted, and the Migrant Resource Centre is hoping to make that a reality for more people. The MRC in St Albans runs a driver education program for new migrants, helping them with the practical and theoretical elements of getting out on the road. The program has been running for eight years with the help of VicRoads. Trainer Deng Yong Deng said it had been an invaluable program for newly arrived migrants. “We book it out every time, and have a long waiting list of people who want to get involved,” he said. “We cover ages from 21 up to 80s … for some people having a car makes such a huge difference. It could be the difference between getting a job or not, or even just being able to go grocery shopping with young kids.”

With the high cost of driving instructors, the MRC is hoping to secure its own car so participants can practise their driving skills and rack up the 120 hours necessary to obtain their licence. “We simply don’t have the funding to get enough instructor hours for all our students, so a car would make a huge difference,” Mr Yong Deng said. “The more hours we can give participants, the more confident they can be that when they go to take their driving test that they will pass. “It’s a successful program, but a car would make things so much better.” Ewen McRae Deng Yong Deng and team leader Vicky Fisher are ready to hit the road. “It’s harmful to everyone in our communities and makes those who bring such determination, creativity and talent to our cities feel unwelcome, simply because they’re Australian-Sudanese.” South Sudanese lawyer Maker Mayek said he was “overwhelmed” by the support he received from the mayors, adding it reinforced Melbourne’s status as a diverse and multicultural city. “Australia belongs to all of us and that’s why I say it’s incumbent upon us to identify our challenges … and work towards addressing those challenges together,” Mr Mayek said. Melton mayor Bob Turner has joined seven other mayors to call for “racist fear mongering” against the African community to stop. Standing in solidarity with the South Sudanese community, mayors from Melton, Darebin, Hume, Whittlesea, Moreland, Yarra, Knox and Monash denounced “inflammatory” headlines and highlighted the positive contributions of diversity and multiculturalism to Australian society. Cr Turner said there was “creativity, intelligence and determination” in the South Sudanese community and Victorians making them feel welcome would be the best way to help. “Making young people and their families feel welcome in the place they now call home is the best way to make our communities healthier,” Cr Turner said. “This is how we create jobs, help people complete school or provide pathways to training and employment.” Melton was home to people from more than 130 nationalities, who spoke 76 languages, Cr Turner said. “Melton is one of the fastest-growing cities in Australia with increasing cultural diversity … and it’s important that we are committed to building communities where everyone can belong,” Cr Turner said. In her blistering speech, Darebin mayor Kim Le Cerf said the mayors, representing 1.2 million Melburnians, were standing in solidarity with the South Sudanese community to tell politicians and the media “enough is enough”. “This racist fear mongering must be stopped,” Cr Le Cerf said.

But independent data from Crime Statistics Agency suggest otherwise – South Sudanese people make up just one per cent of overall offender numbers in Victoria. In the year to June, 2018, crime in Victoria fell by 9.5 per cent. Nyibol wants the community to put that data

At a press conference earlier this year, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said claims that Victoria was not a safe place to live were “complete and utter garbage”. “There are people being affected by crime, and that’s always been the case and it’s the same in every city in Australia … [but] Victoria is one of the safest places in the world to live,” he said.

Nyibol Atoc feels the pressure of the piercing stares in public. She straightens herself and stands tall – but not too tall, fearful of intimidating those around her. She smiles, her face beaming, and reminds herself nothing lasts forever. At just 20-years-old, Nyibol has maturity that belies her age. A first-year RMIT student studying for a bachelor of criminology and psychology, Nyibol carries the burden heaped on the South Sudanese community by politicians and the media. “We don’t deny the problem exists,” she tells Star Weekly Weekly, referring several times to her notes during the interview to make sure she hasn’t missed important points. There’s a lot of pressure on this young Melton woman – she’s desperate to highlight the contributions the South Sudanese community is making and the struggles it is facing. She talks of friends who have been discriminated against when looking for work; teenagers who have begrudgingly accepted being subject to racism; and young adults doing all they can to engage with Australian society. “All of this just shows you how much the media has ingrained into people’s minds that the South Sudanese community are not part of society and that they’re not trying to add anything to society,” she says, clearly trying to suppress her frustration. “A lot of my friends are at university – it’s not like we’re just doing nothing. I have friends who are working, friends who’ve enrolled themselves into leadership programs or kept themselves busy with creative outlets.” Some politicians have labelled Victoria the

Michelle ready to shake it up Michelle Mendes is heading to Spain next month to shake it up and raise money for Parkinson’s research. The Kurunjang resident, and Melton councillor, has been living with Parkinson’s for the past six years. In that time, she’s been admitted to hospital “quite a few times” and had issues with her digestion. “Sometimes you develop a limp because of sore limbs … and winter’s hard because it tightens your bones,” Ms Mendes says of living with Parkinson’s. “I’ve had a great run this year, but there are other times where you fall into a heap.” Over the years, she’s raised more than $14,000 for Parkinson’s Victoria thanks to the generosity of the Melton community. This year she’s heading to Spain to do a 10-day walk from Madrid to Barcelona to raise money for the Shake It Up Australia Foundation. Ms Mendes said she hoped a cure was imminent with all the research being done around the disorder. “And the more people who get behind it, the more chance you have of finding a cure,” Ms Mendes said.

A program designed to reconnect disengaged youth with training and education has been expanded to Melton. The Navigator program has been rolled out in the Central Highlands, Bayside Peninsula, Southern Melbourne, Mallee, Goulburn, Ovens Murray and Hume-Moreland. The state government last week announced a $43.8 million expansion of the program to include the Brimbank-Melton area, Loddon Campaspe (Bendigo and Echuca), and inner Gippsland next year. The program supports young people aged 12 to 17 who are not attending school, or struggling with attendance, by connecting them with a case worker and a range of support services to forge a path back into education. Anglicare Victoria provides the program in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley, in partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence. Anglicare Victoria’s Navigator team leader Sandra Inserra said she was “thrilled” with the decision to expand the program to Brimbank and Melton. Ms Inserra said the program targets young people who attended less than 15 days of school in a 10-week period, with many of the student absenteeism rates hovering even below that. “We get to know the young person and the family, and unpack what aspirations they might have, where they’d like to be and also gain a clear understanding of potential barriers that have stopped young people from attending school,” Ms Inserra said. “Education provides opportunities, and all young people deserve to have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.”

saying something says a lot

To end family violence we need to recognise how it starts. It starts with a lack of respect for women. Whether it’s just a joke or a passing remark, when a mate says something about women that you think isn’t right, let him know about it. Speak up. Staying silent means you accept what he said, and he gets away with it. You don’t have to say much, just something. For help, or someone to talk to, go to vic.gov.au/familyviolencesupport

Hope is on the way for the west By Ewen McRae

Sunshine Hospital will be one of six Victorian hospitals to benefit from the expansion of a new suicide prevention program. The state government announced last week that the Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) initiative would be expanding after a successful pilot at the Alfred Hospital over the past 12 months. Sunshine will join Casey, Latrobe, Ballarat, Werribee, and Bendigo hospitals in adopting the initiative. Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the toll of suicide in the community had to be reduced and initiatives like this were helping. “Every year, suicide takes more than twice as many lives as the road toll – that’s simply unacceptable,” Mr Foley said. “The HOPE program has already helped hundreds of Victorians who have attempted suicide and need an intensive response in the months following, which we know can be a period of heightened risk. “By expanding the program to more sites across the state, we are continuing to take a proactive approach to suicide prevention.” Mid-West area mental health manager Terry Runciman said the program would be a welcome addition to the suicide prevention services at Sunshine Hospital. “One suicide in the Brimbank or Melton region is one too many and this new program will help support our staff to remain in contact with our clients in the community who we believe are at risk of harming themselves again,” Mr Runciman said The government has allocated $18.7 million in this year’s budget to expand the program.

The campaign to increase immunisation rates in Brimbank has a new face. As part of an increased push from the North Western Primary Health Network to get more children immunised, a Fraser Rise family will be featured on campaign posters to be seen in GP waiting rooms and clinics throughout the region. Emily Vosko, whose daughter Mikayla is part of the campaign, said the message was to not let life get in the way of staying up to date with your immunisations. A network spokesperson said that while nearly 95 per cent of parents in Melbourne’s north and west were fully immunising their newborns, the rate dropped to just over 90 per cent for the vaccines given between 12 to 18 months. Ms Vosko said she hoped Mikayla would one day appreciate the important message she helped promote. “It’s such an important campaign and I love that Mikayla is a part of it,” she said. “When she grows up I am sure she will be very proud of the fact that she played a role. “As a parent, I take the responsibility of ensuring Mikayla is as healthy as she can be before she goes to childcare and I hope other parents feel the same.” EMILY VOSKO AND MIKAYLA

West attracts investor interest By Nick Lenaghan, Australian Financial Review Industrial investor LOGOS is on a roll through Melbourne’s west, snapping up a $119 million Kmart distribution centre, its third acquisition in the area in the past month. Bought from US funds giant Invesco, the distribution centre in Truganina is about 77,000 square metres and is fully leased to Kmart. The deal was brokered by JLL’s Tony Iuliano and CBRE’s Chris O’Brien. It was struck on an initial yield of about 5.45 per cent.

The Kmart deal follows LOGOS’ acquisition of a 27.5-hectare development site on Palmers Road in Truganina from petrol king and property player Nick Andrianakos in a deal worth about $28 million. The Palmers Road site has scope for a logistics estate of as much as 160,000 square metres, creating an asset potentially worth $200 million to $250 million. LOGOS last month also completed a new facility in Infinity Drive. The Macquarie-backed investment house led by Trent Iliffe and John Marsh has assembled $4.2 billion in equity commitments

Ballan streets ahead Ballan streets have been given a major facelift. Stage one of the streetscape upgrade in Inglis Street, between Stead and Fisken streets, was recently completed. An official opening ceremony has been planned for Wednesday, August 23. The upgrades included: • Replacing and widening concrete footpaths with asphalt footpaths; • Replacing other hard surfaces and nature strips with sawn bluestone paving and asphalt; • New street furniture; • New garden beds, and the planting of 27 trees and 2300 plants; • Improving drainage systems; • Improving pedestrian safety, accessibility and connectivity; • Improving on-street parking, including nine extra parking bays; and • Installing electrical conduits and pits.

18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 21, 2018

Stage two of the project will involve upgrades to Fisken Street and the southern end of Cowie Street. Design works are expected to be completed at the end of this month, with construction to be tendered soon after. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell is inviting residents to the official opening to hear more about stage two of the project. “The result has been great and we’re receiving very positive feedback now the project is completed,” Mr Tatchell said. The celebrations will kick off at 3pm on Thursday, August 23 at McLeans Reserve, Inglis Street. Sumeyya Ilanbey Mayor Paul Tatchell checks out the streetscape works. (Marco De Luca)

to 15 ventures in Australia and abroad. The pipeline is nearing $10 billion in end value for assets under management. LOGOS has now appointed former Toll property development chief Darren Searle to lead its Australian arm. “Truganina is one of Australia’s core industrial locations with many large logistics operators including Coles, Woolworths and The Reject Shop, operating from this suburb,” he said. “The Kmart distribution centre is a strategic addition to our growing portfolio of core assets within key logistic markets.”

In 2016, Ivanhoe Cambridge, the real estate unit of the Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec, acquired a major stake in LOGOS Property Group alongside Macquarie Capital and LOGOS itself. LOGOS has been expanding into the markets of China, Singapore and Indonesia. Late last year it moved into the Indian market, joining a local asset manager for a $US400 million equity raising to invest there. As well it recently set up a $US830 million vehicle to invest in Chinese logistics facilities, partnered by Canadian and Danish fund managers.

year. It has all original songs and has been produced by award-winning producer and songwriter Greg Critchley from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The first single, If This Is All There Is, will be released on August 31.

Can you tell me a little about your singing and songwriting journey?

What’s been the hardest part about releasing a single?

I have been singing as far back as I can remember. I come from a family who loves music, musicals and dance – I even came out of an anaesthetic singing after an operation I had when I was four. I did theatrical dance when I was young and singing was a big part of that. Then, as I got older, I sang in bands and performed at the Djerriwarrah Festival on numerous occasions throughout the years. At secondary school, I was told not to bother about songwriting as I was no good at it, so I stopped doing it for a long time. Then, while working as a teacher, there was a need for a song to be written to inspire the kids to engage in a program we were teaching called You Can Do It. I co-wrote my first real song, as I like to call it, and it was runner-up in an international songwriting competition. From there I went on to co-write a couple more songs that were part of my debut album that was released two years ago. That album won several Akademia Independent Music Awards in LA. The single, Long After You’re Gone, also stayed at No.1 on the Fan Voted Chart in the USA for 10 consecutive weeks. I had the honour of being the first Australian to reach the No.1 spot on that chart. I am currently working on finishing my new EP, which will be released later this

The hardest part, as an independent artist, has been the amount of things I’ve had to learn about and then putting all that learning into action so quickly. Deciding on who to record with, what image and brand I wanted to portray to the world, who would do my photos, artwork, music video, how to market my music in the right way so that people would actually get to hear it. Creating a song is never just about writing or choosing it, then recording and releasing it; there is so much more behind the scenes stuff that goes into it. It’s been quite an experience. Do you have any words of advice for younger singers and songwriters? My advice would be, if you believe in yourself and have a strong enough desire, be determined and do everything you possible can to realise your dream. Don’t let anything stand in your way. Can you tell us something people would be surprised to find out about you? I am a movie tragic. My brother and I can recite some films word for word.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir welcomes a new kid on the block Lucy Dinknesh is dead; long live Lucy Dinknesh. The much-loved Ethiopian stalwart of the Footscray eats scene has closed its doors. Doubtless that will leave a hole impossible to fill for its many fans. But House of Injera – at the same address – is giving it a good shake. Based on the mostly excellent food we eat during a mid-week visit – and the happy tables around us – House of Injera is destined to be a hit. But this is a rather different enterprise. It’s the first restaurant adventure for the team of Wes and Brod Jackson and Messe Berhe, with the latter (mum of Wes) doing all the cooking. The dining room is a rather chic delight, with low-fi lighting (but still bright enough to see our food), plain yet fetching wooden tables, cushions scattered around and Ethiopian art work adorning the walls. The pungent tang of incense and funky Ethiopian sounds – some even familiar to Bennie and I from my slim collection of Ethio music – are comfort-inducing in a swell way. The House Of Injera menu is a simple, well-written list featuring many dishes with which we are familiar. Though there are a few wrinkles along the way. One is the inclusion of kikel seg, the meat and vegetable soup we adore. My choice is soup, but I let Carnivore Boy Bennie bully me into ordering the lamb ribs. Our lamb ribs ($15) look the part and

HOUSE OF INJERA Address: 227 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 9687 8644 constitute a generous serve. Unfortunately, we find them to be extremely fatty. Much better are the tibbs-style lamb cubes, onion, carrot and their juices on which the ribs are presented. We order the mistro combo at $20 each – and are knocked-out happy to find it includes a small bowl each of aforementioned kikel seg soup. It is excellent – and there’s a heap of on-the-bone meat submerged in our bowls. We think of it as the Ethiopian take on pho or Jewish penicillin/chicken soup. The rest of our mistro line-up includes wonderful renditions of khay wat, gomen sega and the familiar, always-welcome Ethio mix of beetroot and spuds. The meat in the beef stew that is khay wat is cooked down and easy to eat. The greens of gomen sega come with another wrinkle – more tender on-the-bone meat. We’re far from complaining, as there’s more food served to us than we can eat, but instead of five dishes as part of our mistro combo, we have been served four. No problem at all – and our bill is adjusted accordingly. House of Injera is warmly recommended by CTS.

With a manicured front yard including timber steps, feature concrete detail to the side drive leading to a fantastic two car carport-cum-pergola, as well as a double garage with internal access, it’s clear the builders of this family property thought of all the extras. Within, over-sized white gloss tiling helps enhance the size of the spaces. There are three carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes, including the main with the en suite and walk-in robe. There are two living areas – the sitting room which is carpeted and has a split-system, as well as the open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area. Out the back is a lawn with landscaped spaces and a shed, with that huge pergola nearby as a classy entertainer option.

A combination of hardwood floors and carpeting set against light walls and fan lights creates a welcoming first impression at this established address. Spaces include a contemporary kitchen with stainless-steel appliances, meals area, and all receive great light thanks to large windows. The lounge area has hardwood floors, a wall-set heater and a split-system. Three bedrooms have built-in robes and carpeting. The undercover pergola with shed and entertaining area complements the big lawn, also great for entertaining in the summer months.

Here is an excellent first home or investment property. The house has three carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes, including the main bedroom with an en suite and walk-in robe. There’s two living areas – a carpeted sitting room and tiled open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area. Out back are a pergola and a good-sized yard. All the bones are for creation of a really great lifestyle property. Located close to transport, shopping and schools, this one is worth a look.

In a pocket surrounded by parkland, here is a picture-perfect property. Inside, enjoy three living zones and three carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes including the main bedroom with a walk-in robe and en suite. Freshly painted throughout, this property is an attractive option for retirees or first home owners. Inclusions are ducted heating and split-system units. Walk to Eynesbury Homestead and Golf Course and enjoy nearby walking, cycling paths and playgrounds. On a block of roughly 665 square metres, the backyard is a great size and has a flourishing vegie patch. Rear laneway access offers provision for boat or caravan storage.

MOUNT COTTRELL 1668 Mount Cottrell Road, 3024 YPA Melton: 9746 8899

Price: $899,000 – $988,900

This contemporary country haven, with about 3845 square metres to play on, is a true oasis for a family wanting to be out of the hustle and bustle of life. But it’s not out of the way when it comes to convenience: Exford and Rockbank primary schools are both seven-minute car trips away, while Western Freeway is 10, taking you in one direction to Melton in 10 minutes and the other all the way to Docklands in about 30. At the end of a long driveway past sweeping lawn dotted with trees and garden areas, arrival is at more low-maintenance gardens celebrating the essential rural look.

Entry to the house is directly into an expansive living room laid with timeless slate floor tiles; it also has the natural timber lintels, skirts, architraves and window frames seen all through the house which add much character. Living spaces are more than ample here. There’s also a family-meals space adjoining the kitchen which has matte floorboards, a grey accent wall and a wood heater. And then there’s a separate rumpus room which, as does the family room, accesses the east-facing gable-roofed outdoor dining area. The main bathroom and toilet are

separate, while the laundry is a good size and has good storage. The smart modern kitchen has loads of mid-grey cabinetry, pale timber benches including a brekkie bar for at least five – under contemporary pendants – white subway splashback tiles and a french-door pantry and 900mm cooker. As well as a study (or fifth bedroom), there are four fitted and carpeted bedrooms, the main with grey accent wall, a walk-in robe and an en suite with the vanity trimmed with timber. A big grey Colorbond shed has an attached carport, and behind this is a vast

lawn for the kids to have a kick of the footy or to plant, perhaps, some fruit trees or whack up a chook run. And another alfresco area out back allows kicking back to watch the glorious sunsets. Other features at this fine property include multiple ceiling fans, heating and cooling and a double carport. Nearby heritage-listed forests come for free. The planned outer ring road will be four minutes away, the planned new Ferris Road town centre about five. Carole Levy 27 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 21, 2018

One finals drought ended and a finals streak came to an end when Melton beat the Sunbury Lions in Ballarat Football League on Saturday. For the Bloods, the win means they will play finals for the first time since 2007 after several near misses in recent years. A lot was on the line for both the Bloods and the Lions, with both looking to seal finals spots. The Bloods’ 13.12 (90)-5.7 (37) victory means the Lions won’t play finals for the first time since they joined the BFL. Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said he was spent after the match. “It’s been 11 years since we played finals,” he said. “And it’s 14 years since we’ve beaten Sunbury. I think the last time we beat them was in the 2005 grand final. I knew it was going to be pretty tough. They had to win to keep their season alive.” The Bloods led at every break by at least three goals, but weren’t able to break the game open until the second half of the last quarter. They kicked six goals to two in the final term to run away with the game. Tymms said it was an ugly win played in a typical MacPherson Park wind, which made the win all the more worthy. He said they were able to find different options up forward, including some unlikely goalscorers. Riley Walker, who kicked his first senior goal, was among them. Blake Souter kicked three goals and Jaycob Hickey and Braedan Kight kicked two each.

Tymms said that in an even spread, Lachlan Walker, Hickey and Connor Griffiths were his best players. The win seals up a finals spot for the Bloods with one round remaining. It’s a new feeling for many of the players and coaching group. “I’ve never coached a senior final,” Tymms said. “We’re a pretty young group – we have maybe only two guys who have played senior footy finals.” He said they would use the experience of Matt Denham and Ben Archard, who have not only played in finals, but also been part of premiership sides. The Bloods enter the final round sitting in fourth. They will face Bacchus Marsh, which is on the same number of points, on Saturday. Tymms said they were keen to get one over Bacchus Marsh, the only team that has really smashed the Bloods this year. “In the last round, we could be playing for second or third,” he said. “Either way, we’re pretty happy to get through. It’s reward for the effort the team has put in. “Bacchus Marsh is the only team that had pantsed us and embarrassed us, so we owe them.” The Cobras sealed their finals spot with a 8.11 (59)-6.14 (50) win against Sebastopol. Melton South fell short against Lake Wendouree, losing 12.17 (89)-6.4 (40), while Darley was downed 14.10 (94)-8.15 (63) by North Ballarat City.

41 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 21, 2018

SPORT Cobras put an end to finals drought with one-goal win Bacchus Marsh will play Ballarat Netball League A-grade finals for the first time in a number of years. After a tough few weeks during which they dropped a few games they shouldn’t have, the Cobras have returned to form and showed why they deserve to be in the top six. On Saturday, a one-goal win against Sebastopol was enough to seal a finals spot they’ve been chasing. Cobras coach Michael Saker said he didn’t know the last time the A-grade team played finals. “We knew we had to win that game,” he said. “All the girls are pretty excited. It was a major goal we set this year.

“Last year we finished two and half games outside the top six and we were thereabouts but couldn’t get the finish. “It was the clear goal that we wanted to make finals this year.” The Cobras showed glimpses of their best against the undefeated Sunbury Lions in the previous round and were able to do it again against fifth-placed Sebastopol on Saturday. Like many of their recent games, not much separated the two sides and the Cobras won 42-41. Stacey Jeffrey shot 29 goals for the Cobras, with wing defence Megg Collins named their best. Saker said a meeting between the playing

group had got them back on track a few weeks ago. “A few home truths were said about work ethic,” he said. “The wheels had fallen off and it started to get ugly on court. It brought us back on the same page and refocused everyone. “The efforts have been there the last couple of weeks.” Now with a finals spot secured, the Cobras plan to try a few more things in the final round against win-less Melton. Saker said after losing their main goal shooter, Madeline Hodgson, for the rest of the season, they were trying to settle the attacking end.

Bears’ dream run over By Tara Murray Burnside Heights’ dream first season in Essendon District Football League Women’s competition came to a heartbreaking end at the weekend. The Bears, who have been one of the two standout teams, proved no match for the experienced Pascoe Vale which completed the perfect season, winning the grand final 8.7 (55)-0.0 (0). It was an even first quarter on the scoreboard, but then the Panthers blew the game open in the second quarter – they kicked five goals, including three in four minutes to Sarah Theuma – putting the game squarely in their favour. The Bears needed an early goal in the third quarter, but it wasn’t to be. When the rain hit in the last quarter, the Bears switched players around, hoping to make a mark on the scoreboard. The Panthers scored just two goals in the second half, but were able to keep the Bears scoreless to go on to claim the EDFL’s first women’s premiership. Bears coach Brent Thomas said Pascoe Vale had been the better team all year. “Experience shows,” he said. “For a first year side I’m ecstatic to get where we are. “It’ll be a learning curve. Full credit to them.” Thomas said no matter what the result, the Bears were always going to be winners, in their first season together. He put no pressure on them before the game. “I said they’ve already won the premiership.” The group started training more than 12 months ago in preparation for this season. “My first comment [at the beginning of the season] to the girls was I was happy to win a game and that would be wonderful. “One became two, and two became three, and it was what it was. It’s a little bit of history for the club and I’m proud of that.” Thomas said they were let down by a couple of poor quarters at the weekend. He said nerves and a lack of experience got to them, as they didn’t play to their best during the middle quarters. The day was compounded by injuries in the dying minutes, which led to two players being carried from the ground. “The injuries hurt,” Thomas said. “I asked the girls to put their body on the line, and they did that and showed the supporters and club, that they are for real.” Thomas said Maria Afuhaamango, Sina Mason, Isabella Seychell, Brooke Annan-Coeat and Krissy Trang were the side’s best in the loss. Pascoe Vale’s Jessica George was awarded the best on ground medal. Three Bears players were named in the EDFL women’s team of the year – captain Kayla Ravenello and Krissy Trang and injured forward Brooke McKinley, who played just five games for the season. 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 21, 2018

He said they wanted to get the win and continue their good form, but at the same time they want to make sure they stay injury free. “We want to keep the momentum we started from the Sunbury Lions game,” he said. Melton is coming off a 46-23 loss to the Sunbury Lions. As for finals, Saker said anything can happen. “We haven’t spoken about it this year, but we’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain,” he said. In other results, Melton South had a draw with Lake Wendouree 40-40, while Darley lost to North Ballarat City, 53-31. Tara Murray

Game break good timing for Phoenix Melton Phoenix appears to be enjoying some breathing space in FFV state league 5 west soccer. With no role in a catch-up round and then a bye, the Phoenix players have had two weekends off. Coming off two losses, Phoenix coach Mark Parnis said the rest had probably come at a good time. “We have a few players who are injured, who can now take a couple of extra weeks to recover,” he said. “David Valenzuela has missed a couple of matches and he’s been pivotal this season. He would have been useful the last few weeks.” The Phoenix is in eighth place with a 7-3-8 record after a tough start to the year. Parnis, who is in his first year at the club, said progress was being made. “Being my first year as senior coach, every game is a learning curve,” he said. “I’m really proud what they are doing. “We’re a couple of steps off the better teams. “A couple of new personnel next season might make a difference.” Parnis has been reappointed for next year. He said the club came to him early in the season, offering him a second year. “The club asked me a while ago and I said I wanted to wait until later in the season,” he said. “They came back later on and said they still wanted me to stay on. “The first time I thought was amazing and then, seven to eight weeks later, I thought, ‘Beautiful’, and signed on.” Parnis said those behind the scenes had put a lot of hard work into the club. “I love the club and the people around the club,” he said. “Everyone is comfortable coming into the club and it’s credit to the committee members who have put in the hard work.” After their byes, the Phoenix will face Melbourne Lions and Keilor Wolves in the final two rounds. Westside Strikers will be looking to finish their season on a high, having already claimed the state league 5 west title. The Strikers are eight points clear of Gisborne, with Gisborne having two matches to play. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills remains third with three rounds remaining. It can still finish second and earn a promotion playoff spot and is three points behind Truganina Hornets.

Melton exits on a hopeful note By Tara Murray The best and worst of Melton Thoroughbreds was on show as they were knocked out of the Big V men’s division 2 finals. After losing game one of their semi-final series last weekend by one point to Coburg Giants, the Thoroughbreds turned it around on Saturday night with an 85-64 win to take the series to game three. But in the final encounter, the Giants gained an early lead and held it for an 85-64 victory and the series win. Thoroughbreds coach Joe Hooks said the weekend’s two matches reflected the story of their season. “We play really well one time and then relax a bit,” he said. “It’s our biggest problem. We think we have it in the bag.” On Saturday night, the Thoroughbreds did the damage in the middle two quarters, outscoring the Giants 51-30 and leading by as much as 26 points. Dexter Graham scored 23 points and Wol Wol Ngong scored 20. Hooks was hoping that form would continue in Sunday’s game, but it wasn’t to be. The Giants showed at both ends of the court they were on a mission to seal a grand final spot. Hooks admitted turnovers killed the Thoroughbreds early when the game was up for grabs. He said they allowed Coburg to play their style, slowing down the game and reducing the scoring. The Thoroughbreds got within four points in

both the third and fourth quarters, but couldn’t get any closer. “A couple of bad plays and too many turnovers,” Hooks said. “We had 15 turnovers in the first half. We handled the ball a little bit too much and didn’t share the ball as much as we needed to. “The boys got a little bit ahead of themselves. I tried to calm them down, but Coburg was disciplined.” Graham again top scored with 21 points, but he had eight turnovers. Mangar Manyang was the only other player to score double figures, hitting 15 points. Despite the Thoroughbreds’ season coming to an end, Hooks said there were a lot of positives. “It’s their first year together and they did a fantastic job – a group of guys that we have just got together,” he said. “Making it to the final four is nothing to be ashamed of. Hopefully, they learn from this and regroup next season.” Hooks said he hoped all the players would stick around to have a crack at going at least one step further next year. Hooks said they were hoping that the Melton community would get on board. “I’m extremely proud of them and they’ve learned a lot this season,” he said. “Hopefully, we can keep the group together and hopefully we can get the support of the city.” Coburg will play Mildura Heat in the grand final series after the Heat knocked off minor premiers Craigieburn Eagles in three games.
