Spectacular kid caper Melton West Primary School pupils are gearing up for a stellar mass song and dance at this year’s Victorian State Schools Spectacular. This year’s production, With the Beat, will explore the concepts of belonging and identity and feature a 75-piece orchestra, 1300-voice choir and 1125 dancers. There are 72 Victorian schools involved in the mass choir and 80 involved in the mass dance. This year’s Victorian State Schools Spectacular will run for two shows on Saturday, September 15, at Hisense Arena. An event spokeswoman said the show provided a “unique training opportunity” for students, on stage as well as backstage. GRADE 5 PUPILS SHANAYA, LILA AND MADISON

Exford school poll cash By Sumeyya Ilanbey Exford Primary School will be overhauled and brought into the 21st century with much-needed upgrades, including a gymnasium and permanent buildings, the Labor government has promised three months from the election. Education Minister James Merlino visited the 116-year-old school on Wednesday to announce a re-elected Labor government would commit $6.25 million for the first stage of the upgrades, which will involve masterplanning the site and replacing portables with permanent buildings.
The school’s population has more than quadrupled to 440 students since Lisa Campo was appointed principal in 2007. The number of classrooms increased from five to 18 in 11 years. “We have been communicating with the [education] department for a number of years, just ensuring they understand the growing needs at our school and the recognition that we have a lot of growth coming our way [from] new estates between us and Melton South,” Ms Campo said. “We’ve been communicating, ‘Hey, we need
to be ready for the wave of children coming our way’, so we’re thrilled the department has taken this action.” As part of the funding deal, the school council and leadership team will work with the Victorian School Building Authority to identify required upgrades and decide whether additional land needs to be purchased. Ms Campo hopes the school will also be connected to the main sewer and water system. She says the school has previously run out of potable water and has outgrown its current sewerage treatment plants.
“[We’re also] after an attractive environment that [caters] for all learning needs, so you can have dedicated classroom spaces but spaces that can be collaborative, used across year levels … for science, literacy, arts,” she said. Mr Merlino said the state government recognised the urgency of upgrading Exford Primary School. He said work would start “immediately” if Labor is re-elected. “Stage one will … go towards masterplanning the whole site, but it will be that the majority of funding will go towards permanent facilities to replace the portables,” he said.

Rates model cops ‘outdated’ label needed to be new systems for charging rates and funding councils. “The current system of rating is outdated and based on 19th century English methodology which focused on farmers and landowners,” Mr Ramsay said. He said the shifting of programs and costs from other tiers of government also needed to be recognised. Mr Ramsay was highly critical of applying the same rates model to regional and metropolitan councils. He said regional councils were often larger in land mass, but had fewer ratepayers. Moorabool council was contacted for comment. Sumeyya Ilanbey
Driven by determination By Sumeyya Ilanbey It was a project decades in the asking, first brought to the attention of state and federal governments 15 years ago. Moorabool council, local MP Don Nardella and Bacchus Marsh residents lobbied for another access point onto the Western Freeway from the booming town. And last Thursday, construction on the entry and exit ramps from Halletts Way, including a pedestrian overpass, was completed three months ahead of schedule. It took 523 people, working 51,016 hours, to deliver this mammoth project designed to slash traffic congestion and remove trucks, from the town centre. The federal government pitched in $12.16 million and the state $3.04 million more than two years ago to deliver the ramps and pedestrian overpass. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the upgrades were “incredibly” important for the Bacchus Marsh community, who have been competing with trucks for the town’s roads. “This is the foundation of how we try and manage the traffic around Bacchus Marsh,” Cr Tatchell said. “Now we need to find a solution to get the big trucks out of town and get a proper bypass through Bacchus Marsh to [ensure] safety … and get a clearer understanding of how we’re going to design a town around traffic movements.” Victoria’s Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said he hoped the project would bring some relief to drivers looking for a “sane and sensible” way to get around town without trucks. “Not only are we improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in the heart of Bacchus Marsh, we’re giving people more options to get around safely – whether it’s by car, bike or foot.” Liberal senator Jane Hume described the

Plans to build a $50 billion Suburban Rail Loop won’t alleviate the west’s transport woes, according to a transport advocacy group. A 90-kilometre underground rail track to connect Frankston to Werribee and provide a direct rail link to Melbourne Airport was unveiled by the state government last week. The landmark project would connect most of the middle suburbs in the south-east and east, including universities and TAFES. But commuters in the west will only have the option of boarding the train from Werribee or Sunshine – more than 30 kilometres apart. Advocacy group Western Transport Alliance is urging the state government to reconsider the lack of loop connections in the west and to focus on improving the region’s immediate public transport woes, including bus and train services. Alliance chairman Jonathan Marsden said electrifying the railway line between Melton and Deer Park needed to be a much higher priority for the state government. “At present, only three per cent of people working in the west use public transport to get to work, and a quarter of the west’s population have no walking-distance access to public transport at all. “Investment in a high-quality bus network for the west, including better co-ordination of existing services, would help to address these challenges within five years, rather than waiting 30 years for a public transport option to get around our region.” The electrification of the Ballarat railway line between Deer Park and Melton should be much more of a priority, he said. Premier Daniel Andrews said the Suburban Rail Loop would slash travel times and get people to their destinations faster than the road network. “This project will change the way people think about their lives and the future – opening up jobs, study and opportunities that simply aren’t an option because it’s too hard to get across town,” he said. “It will save people time, money and hassle, and better connect Victorians to work, education and each other.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

it was important to note that rate caps did not exist for individual rates notices. “Just because [the] value of your property increases, it does not necessarily mean your rates bill will increase,” he said. “In fact, the dollar figure may still decrease in some instances. “Council advises ratepayers via its rates notice how rates are calculated, the revised capital improved value on the property and the new rate charges applicable to each property. Council is happy to answer any questions from ratepayers regarding their property valuations.” But Mr Ramsay has labelled the current method of collecting rates as “outdated”, arguing in state Parliament last week there

Western Victorian MP Simon Ramsay has called for a review of rate assessments as councils issue rates notices to landowners. Melton council has revealed property prices in the municipality have increased an average of 34 per cent since 2016. While the council is permitted to increase its total rate income by 2.25 per cent under the rate-capped environment, ratepayers whose property value increase by more than 34 per cent will see a rates increase above 2.25 per cent. Properties that have increased less than 34 per cent in value will incur increases of less than 2.25 per cent. Melton finance manager Sam Rumoro said

First response for fun Melton youngsters Ethan and Lily had a ball meeting their local cops, fireys and ambos last week. As part of the emergency services’ community engagement work, paramedic Katie Cornelius, Senior Constable Matthew Krul and firefighter Ben Wallace visited Goodstart Early Learning centre in Kurunjang last Thursday. The trio spoke to the children, and their families, about their roles in the community.
“This was about engaging in local communities … just to promote the lighter side of emergency services,” Senior Constable Krul said. “They get to see police without all the doom and gloom of everyday policing roles. “It’s great to get into the community and have a chat with the public.” The children took photos with their emergency service heroes and their vehicles. Drug fatalities on the increase By Sumeyya Ilanbey
Shine a light on Diwali festival
(Dennis Manktelow)
There’s been a sharp increase in the number of drug-related deaths in Melton and Bacchus Marsh, with 40 fatalities recorded in four years. The not-for-profit Penington Institute released its Australia’s Annual Overdose Report last week. It reports there were 40 drug-related deaths in Melton and Bacchus Marsh between 2012 and 2016, compared to 27 deaths from 2002 to 2006. Institute chief executive John Ryan described the figures as troubling. “This jump from 27 deaths to 40 deaths is alarming,” Mr Ryan said. “This should act as a wake up-call.” Opioids, such as codeine and heroin, were responsible for most fatal deaths between 2001 and 2016. But the report revealed sleeping and anxiety tablets, known as “benzos” had become a “hidden epidemic” killing a large number of Australians each year. The number of benzo-related deaths across Australia doubled in the past decade. Mr Ryan strongly advocated a revamp of funding and resources. “Spending priorities are wrong in Australia – 65 per cent of government investment tackling illicit drugs is spent on law enforcement to reduce supply,” he said. “Just 22 per cent on treatment, 9.5 per cent on prevention and 2.2 per cent on harm reduction.” The Penington Institute has urged authorities to carefully review prescribing of the painkiller fentanyl. “It’s a synthetic opioid, up to 100 times more powerful than pure morphine,” Mr Ryan said. “It’s is claiming more lives than ever before.”
Melton will be lit up, and Indian culture celebrated, at this year’s Diwali festival. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a five-day celebration commemorating the return of Rama, the lord of virtue, to his kingdom after 14 years in exile. Australian Multicultural Association president Ajay Pasupulate said Diwali marked new beginnings and the “triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness”. “The Melton Diwali organisers are passionate about the arts forms brought about by the rich Indian culture and exchanging the skills with other ethnic groups,” Mr Pasupulate said. “This is the beginning of the unique experience of the festival that [has been] celebrated for many thousands of years.” There will be a range of cultural activities, including Indian music and dance, food stalls and carnival rides, at this year’s festival, which will run from noon-10pm on October 27 at Hannah Watts Park. The night will end with a fireworks display. Details: www.amainc.org.au GREETA PASUPULA AND ANUSHA PALADUGA

Cops to strap on body cameras By Sumeyya Ilanbey Police in Bacchus Marsh and Ballan will soon be wearing body cameras in a bid to improve police safety and accountability. Following a “successful” six-week pilot in Ballarat and Epping – during which four early guilty pleas were secured, helping expedite the court process – the cameras will be rolled out to 59 stations across the state, including Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. General duties and highway patrol officers of the rank of sergeant and below will wear the small, battery-operated cameras to capture interactions between police and the public.
Moorabool’s local area commander Brendon McCrory said the feedback from Ballarat officers had been overwhelmingly positive. “Domestic violence is one of the main thrusts for the body-worn cameras,” Inspector McCrory said. “It gives us an opportunity to produce evidence in its rawest form. “We don’t then have a sanitised version of people in suits and ties 12 months later at the court. It gives the opportunity for the prosecution and defendant to see the situation in the rawest form, with people’s emotions, injuries and damages that police are confronted with.” During the six-week pilot, when members of
the public threatened to complain about their interactions with the officers, it was found that those threats were less likely to be pursued when they were informed their interaction had been recorded. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers will turn on the cameras when they are exercising police powers and collecting evidence. Police would not be required to tell members of the public when they were recording, but the camera would usually show a flashing red light when it was recording. The spokeswoman said footage deemed “non-evidentiary” would be deleted after three months.
Police in Bacchus Marsh and Ballan will soon be equipped with body cameras. (Supplied)

have busy lifestyles … a lot of crime prevention is about forming good habits and making a couple of small changes to your day-to-day lifestyle.” Taking “really simple” steps, such as maintaining your yard, locking the letterbox and bringing in kerbside bins, can make a mammoth difference, according to Leading Senior Constable Mutsaerts. The crime prevention expo will be held at the Melton Community Hall on Wednesday, October 3, from 2-8pm. Everyone attending the expo will get a free set of one-way number plate screws. Take-off time for scholarships By Tate Papworth Young people in and around Brimbank will be the beneficiaries of a partnership set to create about 500 scholarships. Melbourne Airport is renewing its $440,000 partnership with Western Chances to provide scholarships for a further three years. Talented and motivated tertiary and high school students facing financial barriers and living in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham will be eligible for the scholarships.
Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said he was proud to support the program. “Melbourne Airport is pleased to partner with such an effective community program that supports and motivates talented young people living in Melbourne’s west,” he said. “The scholarship program provides funding for items that make a real impact, ranging from text books and access to tutoring, to funding public transport and materials related to individual education needs, such as laptops.” Western Chances chief executive Rhyll
Dorrington said she was pleased to see the partnership continue. “From donating money in 2008 in lieu of Christmas cards, to significant multi-year financial and pro-bono support, Western Chances is one of the most fortunate not-for-profit organisations in Victoria to be backed by our nation’s premier airport,” she said. “We feel so proud that in partnership, Western Chances and Melbourne Airport have achieved outstanding results over the past 10 years supporting hundreds of young people.”
Western Chances board member Celia Tran, is a former scholarship recipient, said the initiative had allowed her to thrive. “Western Chances gave me the financial support needed to succeed in my studies,” she said. “When I received my scholarship, I felt really proud and I was happy to be able to relieve my family of stress associated with purchasing text books, a laptop and participation in excursions. “I am now living the dream and give back where I can through volunteering.”

Tower boost for train mobiles By Sumeyya Ilanbey Ballarat railway line commuters can expect better mobile coverage near Bacchus Marsh after a new mobile phone tower was switched on last week. Telecommunications giant Optus finished construction on the tower, at 301 Ironbark Road, Rowsley, last month. Mobile coverage is expected to improve along five kilometres of railway track. The work was undertaken as part of the state government’s regional rail connectivity project. Optus mobile access planning manager Vin Mullins said the Rowsley tower was the fifth Optus site to go live since the project was announced three years ago, with sites at Ballan, Chewton, Taradale and Pakenham East already switched on. “Our new site at [Rowsley] complements the significant investment we have been putting into improving our regional network across Victoria,” Mr Mullins said. Boosters have already been installed inside the Vlocity train carriages to improve mobile coverage. Innovation and Digital Economy Minister Philip Dalidakis said he was pleased with the project’s progress. “We realise that people in regional areas haven’t always had the coverage they deserve,” Mr Dalidakis said. Public Transport Users Association Ballarat spokesman Ben Lever said it was “crucial” for commuters to have strong mobile signals throughout their journeys to allow people to take “full advantage” of their train commute. “I caught a train to Melbourne shortly after the newest tower was turned on … and I didn’t notice any data black spots for the whole journey,” Mr Lever said.
School sports new gear Bacchus Marsh Primary School pupils Lachlan, Bella and Maddy have taken out their new sports gear for a spin. The school received more than 100 new items of sports equipment through Coles’ Sports for Schools program last week, after school families collected more than 169,000 vouchers. Bacchus Marsh Primary School physical education co-ordinator Lisa Hurst is thrilled with the program’s contribution to the school. “We don’t have enough money in our [school] budget to get all this equipment,” she said. “It’s supplemented our supply of equipment, and it gives the children so many more opportunities.” Among the gear the school received were gym mats, basketballs, portable soccer goals, and mini-trampolines. Schools across Melton and Moorabool received about $80,000 of sports gear through the program. Coles state general manager Grant Shelton said the supermarket giant was “delighted” to be delivering sports equipment to local schools. “We hope the new sports equipment will result in a lot of healthy, active fun for school kids in the Melton and Moorabool areas,” he said.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a gem in the industrial heartland Prowling the back streets of Sunshine North after dark is a weird feeling – creepy even. No one around, the businesses are closed and there’s little by way of street lighting. But as we arrive at the block on which Bakhdida lives, parking is at a premium. Entering the restaurant we discover the reason for that: A couple of dozen guests happily playing cards and the like. Yes, this is an eatery-cum-social club of the kind found all over the west in a dizzying array of cultural affiliations. But don’t let that put you off. Here you’ll be served wonderful Iraqi food. Much of the long and extremely affordable menu is familiar in the Middle Eastern way, though there are a few points of difference along the journey. Proprietor Abraham Pitros and his crew are really on the ball, with our many dishes arriving looking gorgeous and after what seemed like hardly any time at all. Pickles are served with several of our other dishes as garnishes, but it’s a good thing we order a dedicated serve of them ($5) with olives – because we love them a lot and eat of them heartily. Cabbage, celery, some carrot and – best of all – many cauliflower florets have a turmeric hue, are delicious and are made with love by Abraham’s mum. A good whack of turmeric is also at play in the dipping concoction that comes with our falafel ($15).
BAKHDIDA CAFE AND RESTAURANT Address: 42 Knight Avenue, Sunshine North Phone: 0403 440 174 The falafel – in the shape of small donuts – are golden outside and in, very plain in the seasoning department and very good. Mixed dips ($10) – eggplant, gagic, hommus – are every bit as excellent as you’d expect and accompanied by a sort-of ratatouille and cabbage salad. We enjoy them with good house-made Iraqi bread. Under the roof of pita chips is a top-notch rendition of fatoosh ($5). Sliced beetroot ($5) is OK, but is so plain it gets a bit lost amid all the other zingy flavours we are loving. Just like all the other guests this night, we get to try (at no charge) this un-named kitchen trial dish. It’s made of large yellow cucumber slices and come across as a cross between a pickle and a salad. It, too, is great. Lamb shawerma ($16) is chewy, a little crispy and quite salty – just as we like it! Mixed skewers ($16) are succulent, awesome – and seemingly unseasoned in any way. Saving the best until last? Pretty much! In meat tashreeb ($16), the cooking juices soak into the bread, upon which resides a generous serving of lamb shank meat. Will we return to Bakhdida? Yes. Again and again and again …

Opportunity knocks in the form of this big corner block. Whether you are looking for a super-sized house on a super-sized block or multi-dwelling development potential, this will grab your attention. The block is about 1632 square metres. Included are a triple garage and three bedrooms of a good size, including the main bedroom with a walk-through robe and en suite. There is a separate study. The kitchen has stainless-steel appliances. With plans already drawn up for seven townhouses, if you’re looking for a development opportunity, look no further.
With empty possession and a stylish and earthy-toned fit-out and a high-end kitchen with stone benches and stainless-steel appliances, this house is a ready-to-go prospect for a young family. Hardscaping in the large backyard creates fantastic entertainment spaces and the facade looks great. Four large and light-filled bedrooms have hard-wearing carpeting and built-in robes. The main (fourth) bedroom is huge and benefits from a large en suite that has stone benches, good storage and neutral floor-to-ceiling tiling. Two living zones incorporate a carpeted sitting room and the large open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area with hardwood flooring. Sliding doors open to a finished undercover alfresco area with downlighting and plenty of room for a large outdoor dining setting. Set on a big block and close to parkland.

On a large allotment and in the heart of Bacchus Marsh, this property is within walking distance of the train station and schools and shops. The house is in good condition and has three carpeted bedrooms, two living areas and a serviceable older-style kitchen. It is an easy to live-in, neat and tidy residence, with a large main bathroom and separate laundry. With a large shed on title, here is a great opportunity, whichever way you look at it. If you are looking for a development project (STCA), this could be the one.
This neat and tidy house has a huge outdoor entertaining area and plenty of space for active kids (set on about 720 square metres). The large L-shaped lounge and dining zone is flooded with light and leads to the large, tiled kitchen with loads of bench space and timber cabinetry. Three bedrooms are all carpeted and have built-in robes (the main bedroom has an en suite). The main bathroom is well proportioned and in good condition. The carpets are all steam cleaned and the garden is well-maintained. With off-street parking for five cars and set on a nice street, this is a fantastic investment opportunity or great family home with its close proximity to Wedge Park Primary School as well as local secondary schools.

If pristine presentation and style-plus is your “thing”, then this Federation tribute will be on your must-see list. Just as the era touches are subtle in the facade, so they are indoors, with details such as fretwork marking wide entries to a couple of rooms, plus era pointers in the main bathroom. Oyster-pearl wall paint all through, coupled with tasteful accent walls, terracotta-toned floor tiles and grey carpet and blinds paired with floaty white sheers create a wonderful harmony and underpin the sense – and reality – of spaciousness. Living areas are plentiful, providing

different spots for retreat, hang-together times and when entertaining. They include a sitting room (which could be the fifth bedroom) behind sliding doors, and a carpeted open lounge room, both of which are along the entry walkway; an expansive living hub with a wood heater; and a theatre room, with screen and projector included, which has glossy laminate flooring and lovely moody wall colour. The kitchen, beautifully lit by a skylight, is a stylish affair, with a stack of off-white cabinetry, an island bench for four topped with charcoal laminate, a large walk-in pantry and all the mod-cons. Family cooks
will love this space and it’s swank enough to welcome guests to sit around the island and enjoy a tipple. As well as an open study, there are four spacious fitted bedrooms, the main with walk-in robe and sparkling en suite. Each bedroom has accent walls in various shades, as well as ceiling fans. The main bathroom has a period-style timber vanity with rosy splashback tiles. A gabled-roofed pergola, with fretworked ceiling corners, is flanked by Tuscan topping areas and a rockery garden with water feature. Fairy lights in the pergola make it a calming night-time space, while

Window is open for that first home The task of buying a first home is still monumental – but a window of opportunity has cracked open as prices soften and market dynamics shift, according to UBS economist Carlos Cacho.
This is an edited version of a story from Chris Kohler, domain.com.au (iStock)
“For first-home buyers who have got their finances in order and have strong credit, it’s certainly a good opportunity,” Mr Cacho says. “But I’d say it’s probably going to get better.” Melbourne house prices have dropped 1.8 per cent to July 31 but still managed a thin annual gain – expected to turn negative soon – while units posted a fall in the quarter. So, first-home buyers may find some wind in their sails but buying in a falling market presents its own challenges. “If you overpaid 24 or 36 months ago it wasn’t too much of a problem, because within a couple of months, you’d already made that capital back in appreciation,” the economist says. “If you overpay now it could be years before you retrieve that extra payment.” The best approach for first-time buyers keen to wade into one of the most-talked about property markets in the world is to keep an eye out for areas of distress in the market, which should be presenting themselves soon.
“There are going to be good opportunities that come up,” Mr Cacho says. “And that may be a seller who has an interest-only mortgage and is switching to principal and interest and can’t afford the repayments and so has to sell by a certain date. “A case like that could provide an opportunity [for first-home buyers].” Data shows first-home buyers are bolstering their position in the market, in particular filling a hole left by falling demand from foreign buyers. “First-home buyer demand continues to offset a reduction in demand from owner-occupiers and foreign buyers, with state government incentives and moderating prices also likely playing a role in helping first-home buyers move onto the property ladder,” NAB chief economist Alan Oster says. So, with market dynamics finally giving first-home buyers something to work with, the question is when should they make the move? Most economists, UBS included, expect capital city prices to weaken further before hitting bottom.

Lakers cop a solid loss By Tara Murray Caroline Springs will be hoping to make the most of its second chance in the Western Region Football League women’s competition finals. The Lakers faced the toughest test in the competition in a semi-final on Saturday morning – unbeaten Manor Lakes. Manor Lakes is the red hot favourite for the premiership and the only team to beat the Lakers this season. The Storm showed exactly why it is the favourite, winning 9.13 (67)-0.7 (7). After taking it up to the Storm the first two times the teams played this season, the Lakers were hoping to do the same this time around. They failed. In the first quarter, the Storm had one more scoring shot, but was up by 16 points at the first break thanks to superior conversion. The margin was almost doubled by half-time with the Storm doing all the scoring in the second quarter. The Storm kicked two goals in each quarter of the second half for a comprehensive win. The Lakers will face Spotswood in a preliminary final this weekend. Spotswood defeated Laverton 5.4 (34)-1.5 (11). The Lakers are familiar with Spotswood, having beaten them by 23 points in the first week of the finals. The Lakers men’s reserves and under-19s had mixed results. The reserves side defeated Deer Park in a qualifying final 7.6 (48)-5.8 (38). The under-19s lost to Hoppers Crossing, 10.12 (72)-10.5 (65).

31 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 4, 2018
SPORT Diggers Rest’s finals campaign off to a bad start Diggers Rest was made to pay for taking too long to get its game going in a Riddell District Football League semi-final with Riddell. Playing for a spot in the grand final, it was the Bombers that happened to be the stronger team for longer. Not much separated the two teams at half-time, before the Bombers opened the game up in the third quarter with three goals. The Burras had their chances to get back into the game, but the Bombers steadied to win 10.8 (68)-7.4 (46). Burras coach Jamie Lobb said a team could not be a bit off its game in finals or it would be made to pay.
He said the third quarter, when the Bombers increased the lead from 10 points to 27 points, was the difference. “We always knew it would be a tough game,” he said. “They have the best form in the competition. We took too long to get the game going on our terms. “You can’t afford to have lapses. “All the stats we were in front and in most of the areas we wanted to be, we were in front. “We just couldn’t convert on the scoreboard.” Lobb said Taylor Hine was the standout at half-back for them as he continued a purple
patch. Mathew Medcraft was the only multiple goalscorer for the Burras, with two. The Burras have the second chance and will face Macedon in a preliminary final this weekend. Lobb said both teams will have different line-ups to the last time they met. “It’s just one of those things and we have to front up again this week,” he said. “We finished where we did which means we get the double chance.” Lobb said they were still missing five players from their best side but expected three or four players to return this week.
He said Stuart Clarke, Brent Tuckey, Cole Laurie and Jesse Flannery were all chances, while they would see how Mick Kilty pulled up after playing in the twos. The Burras reserves will also play in a preliminary final after losing to Wallan. In the other senior semi-final, Macedon smashed Rupertswood. The Cats led by 39 points at quarter-time and were never headed, winning 18.12 (120)-8.9 (57) To find out more about the Rupertswood and Macedon game, go to www.starweekly. com.au/sports Tara Murray

Melton’s on the march By Tara Murray Melton will be playing for its first grand final appearance since 2005 when it takes on East Point in a semi-final clash on Saturday. In pre-season, few would have predicted Melton would be a contender after failing to reach Ballarat Football League finals for 11 years. But the Bloods surprised even themselves by finishing third in the regular season and then went on to win an elimination final on Saturday. Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said everyone was ecstatic after the 10.16 (76)-8.6 (54) win against Lake Wendouree. He said it was reward for effort on and off the ground in recent years. “I wouldn’t have picked this at the start of the year,” Tymms said. “They seem to be getting better each week. “We just wanted to improve. We can throw 32 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 4, 2018
caution to the wind this week and have a real red hot crack. If it goes pear-shaped we still have another chance.” The Bloods led at every change on Saturday but couldn’t get away from the Lakers until the final quarter. Tymms said it was tough conditions, with the rain making it slippery and hard to mark. As a result the game was full of stoppages. He said despite a lack of senior footy finals experience, the playing group didn’t take any nerves into the game. “They didn’t seem too fussed,” he said. “They’re a young playing group and most have played finals in juniors. “They just all did their normal routine and were having a laugh and dance before the game.” Once out there, the Bloods looked the better side for most of the day. A period in the third quarter saw the Lakers hit back and the coaching staff got a bit nervous.
“They got back to within nine points,” Tymms said. “The boys stood strong. They fell away in the stoppages around the ground in the third quarter and we were able to fix that and get the ball going forward.” Darren Haby kicked four goals in a best on ground performance. Tymms said it was hard to pick the best players, but others to stand strong were Ben Archard in the ruck, Jaycob Hickey and Liam Carter. The Bloods this week face East Point for a spot in the grand final. East Point won the qualifying final against North Ballarat City, 9.10 (64)-9.9 (63). Tymms said they wouldn’t take much out of their only meeting this season. “We played them back in round three and got beaten by two points. “Both sides are a little bit different. “We’ll be interested looking at the tapes of their game.”
Bacchus Marsh’s return to Ballarat Netball League A-grade finals wasn’t a happy one. After many years of missing out on finals action, the Cobras faced Lake Wendouree in an elimination. Lake Wendouree started the better of the two against an undermanned Cobras and led by seven goals at quarter-time. The margin was doubled at half-time as the Cobras were kept to their lowest quarter score of the match. The Lakers blew the margin out to 23 goals at the last break and saved their best to last, scoring 17 goals to nine in the final quarter. Final scores were 64-33. Katie Kakoschke, who was moved from defence to up forward, scored 20 goals from 32 attempts for the Cobras. As a team, the Cobras shot at just 66 per cent accuracy. The Lakers now face Sunbury Lions in a knockout semi-final. The Lions were upset by North Ballarat City. East Point will play North Ballarat City for a spot in the grand final. The Cobras C-grade side had a better weekend, defeating Lake Wendouree 37-26. They will play the Sunbury Lions for a spot in the grand final. Darley will play Ballarat in the other final after they beat East Point, 40-37. In another Cobras and Lakers match-up, the Lakers defeated the Cobras 38-18 in their D-grade qualifying final. The Cobras have a second chance and will face East Point. Tara Murray

Caroline Springs finds finals campaign twice as nice Two seasons and two grand finals is the story for both Caroline Springs women’s hockey teams in the Hockey Victoria winter competition. After topping their divisions and taking out premierships last season, the Springers weren’t expecting to have the same success this year. But at the weekend both teams won through to their grand finals. Springers coach Ron Shadbolt was thrilled by the outcome. He said while several players from last season had returned this year, both were very different looking sides. The Vic League 2 side needed a penalty shootout to claim victory against MHSOB on Sunday. Having previously said that MHSOB would be the one team they thought would give them trouble, Shadbolt and the leadership group put a lot of hard work into the game plan. And it paid off. “It was an extremely hard-fought game,” he
said. “It was up and down both ends and was a classy, high speed game. “I felt about the last 15 minutes of the game we were getting on top. “They scored their first goal with about five minutes to go against the play.” The Springers were able to respond not long after through Brittany Webster. With scores locked at 1-1 at full-time, the game went to penalties. Jessica Kelly was the star for the Springers in goal, as the Springers won 4-1 on penalties. Shadbolt said one of Kelly’s best skills was saving penalty shots. He said there was a really even spread of performers across the side. The Springers second women’s side also won through to the grand final in Metro B west on Saturday. They defeated RMIT, 3-0. Shadbolt said there was a 15 minute purple patch late in the first half that did the damage.
The star player was Kelly, who plays on the field in the lower side. “It was a fairly even game in the second half,” Shadbolt said. “The game was won and we wanted to get through with no injuries.” Shadbolt said he was rapt with the result. “There’s only about four players from last year’s premiership team,” he said. Both teams have the weekend off, before the grand finals the following week. It was a good weekend for the Springers as all of their teams won. The men’s Metro A north west team defeated PEGS 1-0 to win through to a preliminary final. The men’s Metro B west team defeated Altona 5-2 to also win through to a preliminary final. Devils find finals form By Tara Murray Darley showed some of its best form as it ended local rival Bacchus Marsh’s season in the Ballarat Football League. Facing off in an elimination final, there was more than just bragging rights on the line for both sides. For the first half it looked like the match could go either way, with the Devils leading by just three points at the main break. At three-quarter time the margin was 12 points in favour of the Devils. For a second straight week, the Devils found another level in the last quarter. This time they kicked 6.7 to three points, to run away with a 12.20 (92)-5.10 (40) win. Devils coach Heath Scotland was one happy man following the win. “We knew Bacchus Marsh would throw everything at us, we’ve had it over them,” he said. “We just needed to weather the storm and we didn’t think that they could sustain that high level as long as we could.
“It worked out that way. We’re really fit, it’s between the ears for us.” Scotland said having a more settled line-up in the past six weeks was starting to show. They were getting a more even spread across the board. Scotland said Luther Baker played his best game of the season and was good alongside Steven Kennedy (three goals), Rhys Ellis, Darren Leonard and Jacob Zeestraten. Scotland also singled out the performance of Abe Kur in the ruck, who curbed the involvement of Daniel Burton. Kur’s performance meant the Devils ruck plans were thrown out the window, with Dylan Reid also playing a role. “We would have liked a 50-50 split between the two in the ruck,” Scotland said. “But such form that Abe showed, we didn’t want to remove him from the ruck.” Scotland said having two talls like that would be beneficial against a side like North Ballarat City, which they face this week. For the Cobras, Ben Speight was the only
multiple goalkicker with two goals. Ryley Stuhldreier was named their best. Scotland said besides a few niggles, they got through the game unscathed. He said Tate Stone was a chance to return this week, but he said Jake Edwards’ season might be over. “He’s probably done for the season,” Scotland said. “Maybe if we make the grand final and he rehabs well, he might play, but he has a serious hamstring injury.” The Devils face North Ballarat City in a knock out semi-final. The two teams met in the second last round of the regular season, with North Ballarat City dominant all day. “We felt like we controlled the game earlier in the year and they reversed that on us last time. “We didn’t execute our plans and it wasn’t how we wanted to play. “They’ve had a demoralising defeat and they want to bounce back. We want to bounce back from the last time we played them.”
The incredible finals run of Rockbank in the Riddell District Netball League will continue for at least another week. The Rams have exceeded everyone’s expectations this season – including their own – and have caused two upsets in as many weeks to win through to a preliminary final. Having upset Wallan in an elimination final, the Rams took plenty of confidence into their semi-final against Rupertswood on Sunday. They kept in touch with the Sharks all day and led heading into the final quarter. The two teams traded the lead in the final quarter, and scores were level when there was a contact call late. Rebecca Hicks took the shot as the siren sounded to give the Rams the win, 46-45. Rams co-captain Mary Brodie said they were shocked by the result. “No one expected that at all,” she said. “After beating Wallan, anything could happen the following the week. “It’s just brilliant for the club.” Brodie said the two sides were neck and neck all day, with the lead changing several times. Brodie said Hicks wasn’t even aware that her last shot would be the match-winning one. “It was right on the buzzer,” she said. “There was a contact call and the siren went and Rianne [Vining] gave Becca the shot. “She [Hicks] didn’t hear the siren.” Hicks shot 41 goals from 49 attempts to be the best shooter on the court. The win came with the Rams having just two players on the bench, including Isabelle Maguire who has come up from B-grade. Brodie said injuries and player availability had left them with few players on the bench. They will lose Kari Love for this week’s match due to a holiday. Brodie said everyone at the club was estactic with the result and how far they had come. “No one knew what would happen over the last two weeks. There was lot of cheers and everyone is over the moon.” The Rams this week face Romsey. The Redbacks lost their semi-final against Macedon by one goal in extra time.
