Carjack crackdown By Alesha Capone Melton is the fifth-highest area in the state for carjackings, according to figures from the Crime Statistics Agency. CSA data supplied to Star Weekly shows there was a total of 200 carjackings reported to Victoria Police between April last year and March this year – 48 of those were recorded in Melbourne’s west. Brimbank was the state’s top spot with 18 carjackings, including three in St Albans and three in Sunshine North for the 12 month period. Casey, in the city’s south-east, recorded 16 carjackings for the same time frame, followed by Greater Dandenong and Hume, which both had 12. Melton was fifth-highest in the state with 11 carjackings, including five in the Melton township itself.

Elsewhere in the west, there were seven carjackings in Hobsons Bay, and six each in Wyndham and Maribyrnong. Brimbank’s Acting Police Inspector Helen Chugg said that “unfortunately” Brimbank was among the areas that had seen an increase in carjackings in recent years. “We understand there is community concern about these crimes,” she said. “While this type of crime is high profile and has high community concern, thankfully it is rare. “Carjackings often involve cross-regional offending, meaning offenders may reside in one area, steal a car on the other side of town and then commit further offences in another area. “To tackle this, our detectives work together at a cross-regional level, sharing intelligence and linking offences to inform our operational response to solve the crimes.” Inspector Chugg said Taskforce Wayward, a police operation which began in March last year in response to “high harm offences” in the west, had led to 197 people being arrested. She said another operation, Operation Regnant, resulted in more than 650 arrests. “Local police complement these taskforces with highly visible proactive patrols aimed at disruption and prevention,” she said. “We are cracking down on people wanted on warrants, ensuring offenders are complying with their strict bail conditions, and managing persons of interest.”
Bacchus Marsh will come alive with a flower and garden show next month. The annual event is an opportunity for participants to flaunt their gardening, cake decorating and photographic skills and revellers to enjoy the floral wonderland. Bacchus Marsh Flower and Garden Show chair Karen Mather said the event, which will raise money for an aquatic centre, has gone “from strength to strength” since it was first held five years ago. “There are lots of reasons an aquatic centre is needed,” Ms Mather said. “It will be there for the community year-round, and old and young can use it all the time.” The event will run over October 20 and 21 at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall, 207 Main Street. The show opens to the public at noon on October 20. Anyone interested in entering or finding out more information can contact karen@ mathernet.com BILL BEALE AND KAREN MATHER

Medical site sold for $12 million By Sumeyya Ilanbey Hong Kong investors have snapped up a Caroline Springs medical supersite for an eye-watering $12.5 million. The Active Medical site, at 224-226 and 228-232 Caroline Springs Boulevard, attracted a number of international and domestic investors, who pushed the price beyond the projected $11 million. It is the biggest medical site sale in Victoria this year, according to Jimmy Tat of commercial real estate agent CBRE.
Touted as an investment offering an “unparalleled combination of prime location, modern improvements, blue chip tenants and return profile,” the medical supersite is 3135 square metres and home to a radiologist, dentist and general practitioners. The combined rental income is more than $665,000 a year. CBRE spruiked the site as being within walking distance of the new Caroline Springs train station and located within Victoria’s “booming western growth corridor”. “[The site] holds a unique position in its
market, with a strong tenant retention history and has the benefit of significant future development upside,” its listing for the site said. “Key attributes of this outstanding property include premium medical investment with six tenancies to well-established medical tenants … [and] direct pedestrian access to CS Square and Central Shopping Centre.” Mr Tat said: “[The site] was predominantly seen as a secure asset and [offering a service] that is a necessity. “The client was mentioning that the west is growing and he knows there’s a need for these
types of services. There are more suburbs being created and population is growing rapidly.” The site is located in a comprehensive development zone that allows for a six-storey development, subject to council approval. The corner block backs on to the carpark at Caroline Springs Central Square and is across the road from Lakeview Senior College and Quest apartments. The sale was achieved through an expressions of interest process, which closed on August 15. Settlement is scheduled to be by the end of November.
Repeat plans for school blitz Melton police are planning another operation to crack down on traffic offences near schools after last month’s blitz detected more than 100 offences. School crossings on Bulmans Road, Melton West; Wilson Road, Melton South; Community Hub, Hillside; and Hume Drive, Caroline Springs were targeted over the two-day operation. Acting Sergeant Dave Sanders said police detected a range of offences, including three instances of cars displaying false plates. The roads had been identified by Melton council as being “of particular concern” because of near misses and drivers breaking the law. “The operation was good – we were out there talking to people and most of the community were happy we were there,” Acting Sergeant Sanders said. “We’ve got a meeting with principals, school councils [this week] and we’ll get some feedback from them and discuss what other schools they believe would benefit from an operation … and we’ll look at running another operation.” Acting Sergeant Sanders said police hoped such operations would drum into drivers the seriousness of heeding traffic rules, especially around schools. “And hopefully the word is spreading around that the council and police are out there,” he said. During the two-day operation, police recovered a stolen car and detected 16 speeding offences, three mobile phone offences, a range of parking offences, five unregistered vehicles and three unlicensed drivers.

Council sets basketball fee hike By Sumeyya Ilanbey Moorabool council will raise court fees for the Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association, to bring it in line with fees charged to other groups using the Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre. The current fee of $25 per court per hour will remain in place until December 30, and raised to $35 per hour for competition use and $21 for training until June 30, 2019. The fees will then be raised to $39 per hour per court for the 2019-20 year, “bringing the BMBA [Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association]
fees closer to parity with other users”, according to officers who presented a report at last week’s council meeting. Councillors also agreed to remove the out-of-hours fees for all users at the centre. “Other centre users are currently paying higher fees than the BMBA; returning a greater proportion of operational costs [cost recovery per cent]; [and] receiving a lower level of council subsidy,” the council report stated. “This is clearly inequitable if the current fees charged to other users are not reduced to the same level as BMBA. Following this course of
action would result in increased subsidy [cost] provided by council.” According to a Moorabool council analysis, the BMBA occupied the Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre 86 per cent of its opening hours during the 2017-18 year. However, fees paid by the association covered 33 per cent of operating costs, with council subsidising 67 per cent of BMBA’s use. But the association’s treasurer Johanna Blain disputed these figures. “Bacchus Marsh College is there all day Monday to Friday, so how can it be possible
that we’re using the centre 86 per cent of the time?” Ms Blain told Star Weekly. The association and Moorabool council have been in talks for the past 18 months trying to draft a new lease agreement. Ms Blain said the association accepted the council’s decision to lift the court hire fees, but had concerns with some of the restrictions – such as not being able to use the foyer – proposed in the previous draft lease agreement. “We have to wait to see the full agreement to decide if we’re happy with what’s proposed,” Ms Blain said.
Dedicated to schooling Vickie Cassar is looking forward to retirement after 42 years in education. Ms Cassar says the idea of being able to frolic in her backyard at her leisure is extremely appealing. “I live on 2.5 acres in Kurunjang, so it’s nice getting out into the garden,” Ms Cassar said. “I think, ‘Oh yeah, I can live with this’.” For racking up more than 40 years with the education department, Ms Cassar has received a Recognition of Service to Victorian Education award. Ms Cassar’s education career started as a business manager at school support centres. After the centres shut down in 1996, she started working at Sunbury College, where she has been ever since. She is currently on long-service leave. “I became very involved with the school, and I used to do other activities, like school plays, debutante balls, and I went to Japan with the
school – that was one of the highlights,” Ms Cassar said. “As a business manager, I’m running the school – I’m the one who knows where everything is, where the money is … and the principal comes to me for guidance. I’m responsible for all the money that comes into the school and making sure we don’t overspend.” Ms Cassar has also always lent a helping hand to students and their parents, assisting with organising school books and uniforms. “I like to believe I make an influence in their lives,” she said. ROB MURPHY AT THE BIODOME
Beyond the biodome By Sumeyya Ilanbey Western Water is ‘wasting’ no time to discover more environmentally sustainable ways to generate electricity from waste. The authority has built a mammoth futuristic-looking biodome that stores biogas captured from sewage treatment at Melton. The gas is then burned to produce electricity at the plant. Half of the plant’s energy needs are being powered through the biodome, according to Western Water’s acting managing director
Rob Murphy. However, there are plans to entirely eradicate the plant’s dependence on fossil fuels. As the population grows and the sewage tank is increased, the biodome will store more biogas to be burned as fuel. Western Water is also working with its customers to collect organic waste as another fuel source and is considering installing solar panels at the plant. “All that material is a valuable resource,” Mr Murphy said. “It’s got energy stored in it – the biodome
just releases that energy, so we can generate electricity.” Construction on the biodome finished last month, and it’s part of an $11 million ‘digester’ project to be completed in the next few months. The digester converts sewage into decomposed waste, which can be used as a fertiliser after further treatment. The sewage is also converted into methane gas that is burned to produce electricity. Western Water hopes to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions at least 10 per cent by 2025.
Sebastian Jenner and Jamie Massouris are at the frontlines of battling youth homelessness in Melton. They are part of Hope Street’s First Response Youth Mobile Outreach Service, working relentlessly to break stereotypes and connect young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, with support services and accommodation. The service’s motto is simple: All young people should have a safe place to live and support. But Mr Jenner and Mr Massouris are all too aware of the grim reality. “We had a young woman with three kids … she was sleeping in her car,” Mr Massouris said. The service found her and her kids a place in a refuge. The service started receiving referrals on June 12 and in that time has already helped more than 50 young people. The organisation is appealing to the community and local businesses for help. Hope Street will host a fundraiser at WestWaters from 6.15pm on Saturday, October 20. Comedian Elliot Goblet will be MC and Abba tribute band BABBA will perform. Money raised will be used to fund emergency accommodation. Cr Melissa De Santis One in five Australians experience mental illness every year; with direct links between mental illness and family violence; sexual, physical and emotional abuse; substance abuse; social isolation and homelessness. As someone who works in the community health sector, this statistic saddens me; and I’m always looking for ways to encourage people experiencing mental illness or suicidal thoughts, to seek support. Thursday 13 September, is RUOK? Day, when we’re all encouraged to ask friends, family—even strangers—if they’re ok. Research shows that 52 per cent of people would like to be asked this simple question—so why don’t we all get on board and support this cause? The RUOK? website, ruok.org.au, provides a guide to help you ask if someone’s ok. It’s important to ask the
question: RUOK?; listen without judgement; encourage action, and check to see how people are doing. It’s also important to show you’re interested, ask open questions, not interrupt or feel like you need to have all the answers. Council runs activities and programs to help people feel included and gain a sense of belonging, as a way to combat mental illness. Visit melton.vic. gov.au/events for details, or to find out more about volunteering in our City. I urge anyone experiencing family violence to call 000 in an emergency, or contact Women’s Health West – 9689 9588 or Kids Helpline – 1800 551 800 for help. Please feel free to contact me on 0437 236 597 or melissa.desantis@melton.vic.gov. au with any Council issues.

MY PLACE When Margaret Vandenbeld moved to Myrniong in the 1990s, she wanted to get involved in the community. She tells Sumeyya Ilanbey about all the groups she’s been involved with, including her current role as secretary of the Myrniong Mechanics Institute Hall. What’s your connection to Moorabool.
Why did you decide to join the committee of the Myrniong Mechanics Institute Hall?
I live in Moorabool Shire – since the 1990s. But we had our land for 10 years before [we built our house] so I’d been coming up for the weekend since the ’80s.
I went to a couple of meetings and they asked for people to be on the committee, so I decided to join.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool?
How important is this public asset to the Myrniong community?
Really, the community. I’ve got the most wonderful neighbours. The whole community is the reason I like living here. I always wanted to live [in Myrniong] but we were in Melbourne until our girls finished university. My husband and I moved up here, but we were only here for two years when my husband died. My husband said to me to try and stay here for a year … and not rush into anything. And because I decided that I wanted to stay here and be a part of the community, I decided I had to get involved with the community. I started doing the elderly citizen’s luncheon, which we do every second Tuesday … and then I became involved with Landcare, then involved with the people who worked with the Myrniong Mechanics Institute Hall. I went to a hall meeting and when they had one of their annual general meetings, I put up my hand for secretary. It’s not just me who does this on my own – it’s the whole community. We always have Christmas Carols and Christmas get-togethers down at the Myrniong Recreation Reserve … and we have the Myrniong Historic Car Spring, which we organise once a year.
(Shawn Smits)
Very. Initially we were having fundraisers to raise money for the hall … Now we’ve got a nice hall, we decided we should have a community dinner every year that wasn’t a fundraiser. We have it catered for, charge people $25 a head and we always have well over 80 people come to that. Often when you’re here, you’re on the farm. You see your neighbours and wave, but don’t get a lot of time to sit and talk to them. Having the community dinner allows us to have a whole night where we talk.
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool?
I probably shouldn’t say this but I want to change things so we don’t have too much development. Development is probably still a while away because we don’t have sewerage. I want it to just stay, and not get too big because that’s when it loses that community feeling.
[My friends and I] often go to Millrose Cottage in Ballan on a Sunday. The food is lovely, the service is terrific … and apart from that, I’m in my 70s so I stay home on the farm a lot. Rest of the time is taken up by all the other things I’m involved in.
Seeing the hall come together. All the renovations that have been done have been fantastic. What’s one thing people would be surprised to find out about you? It was a challenge for me to run the farm on my own, but I’ve done that. And when my husband died we hadn’t finished building the house, so I managed to get that done as well.

What would you change about the area if you could?
What have been some of the highlights of being in the committee?

WHAT A GREAT IDEA
SELLING? Ask your agent about the Star Weekly Spring Value Package offer...
78%
of buyers use print in their property search.1
In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool. 2

SPORT Rams depart upbeat
Strikers start hard and fast
By Tara Murray Rockbank’s season may have come to an end on Saturday, but there was smiles aplenty from the players post-game. Having made it further through the finals than any of the players dreamed possible, a win against Romsey in the Riddell District Netball League preliminary final would have been an even greater bonus. But after upsetting Wallan and Rupertswood in the first two weeks of the finals, it wasn’t to be against the Redbacks, who won 52-41. Rams co-captain Mary Brodie was thrilled to have made it that far. “We’re still happy,” she said. “It was good and we didn’t expect to get as far as we did. Anything past the first week of the finals was a bonus.” On Saturday, the Rams struggled to recapture the form they had shown earlier in the finals. They were down by seven goals at quarter-time and nine at the main break. The Redbacks managed to maintain their lead despite switching positions around to give some other players a go. Brodie said that in the end, the Rams were beaten by a better team. “We didn’t play our best netball and the best team won on the day,” she said. “We just went out there to play the way we had been playing. Their first quarter blew us out of the park … they kept building every quarter. Their defence was fantastic and their whole team was fantastic. It was a hard game.” Rebecca Hicks, who earlier in the week had been named the Western Water player of the year, was the Rams’ best with 31 goals from 35 attempts. For the Rams, it’s been a season of firsts, including making A-grade finals for the first time. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, with the club parting ways with coach Lizzy Masterson towards the back end of the season. Brodie said it spoke highly of the players that they responded so well and continued to win. “It’s fantastic how we have all stuck together,” she said. “We could have fallen apart with no coach. The girls really rallied around each other and were able to handle it.” Based on the success they’ve had as a team and individually, Brodie said there was exciting times ahead. She said support from the club for the team had been massive. Romsey will face Macedon in the grand final on Sunday at Clarke Oval. The Redbacks will be shooting for back-to-back flags.
Westside Strikers could not have predicted their success in their first season in FFV. On paper, they thought they had a strong side and would be competitive in state league west 5, but no one could have forseen a title and promotion. The Strikers lost just one game for the season and sealed the title several weeks ago. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said the experience has been unbelievable. “I don’t think we’ve stopped partying the last few weeks,” he joked. “We thought we would have a good chance, but we didn’t think it would happen like this. “I don’t think anyone expected us to do as well as we did with a brand new side. “We lost just one game, no one expected that.” With the title sewn up, the Strikers gave other players the opportunity to play in the top side in recent weeks. Raniolo said despite the relaxed atmosphere, the playing group was keen to continue winning. “It was good to give the younger guys a taste of senior football,” he said. “We had a 17-year-old playing in the seniors on Saturday. It’s a good sign for the future.” The Strikers finished the season on Saturday with a 4-3 win against the Deakin Ducks. With the title and promotion already sewn up the Strikers have one more goal this season, to take out the overall state league 5 title. State league 5 finals start this week. “As a president [at other clubs], that’s one thing I’ve never done, is win the overall championship,” Raniolo said. “A few guys who have had injuries have been rested and are primed for it.” Raniolo said they were already preparing for next season in state league 4 west. He said the team knows the step up will be a challenge. “I don’t want to be making up the numbers. We want to keep that winning feeling and we’ll be looking to recruit a few more players.” Tara Murray Rebecca Hicks was the standout for Rockbank on Saturday. (Damian Visentini)
Rockbank builds a foundation for next year’s campaign Rockbank’s rise up the netball ladder was recognised at the Riddell District Football Netball League’s night of nights. The Rams, the fairytale story of the netball competition and possibly the league, had a couple more firsts to add to their tale. Co-captain Rianne Vining finished second in the top netball honour, the Ryan Medal. Vining was second in the counting for most of the night behind eventual winner, Macedon’s Chloe Wilson. Wilson finished on 29 votes, with Vining eight votes behind. Vining was shocked with the result. “I did not expect it at all,” she said. “I’m pretty stoked and speechless. I was like ‘what the?’ “I got invited and I just assumed that it was the top-10 that came. I was thinking I had made the top 10 and that was fantastic and I was ecstatic.” Vining admitted she did not think she’d had her best season, describing it as average. 28 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 11, 2018
“I have no idea. I’m very blessed to be chosen as the second best player in the league and there’s so many amazing netballers I’ve been playing against.” Vining’s second place followed that of Rebecca Hicks who was named the Western Water player of the year. That award is voted on by the coaches. Hicks, who is in her first season with the Rams, was also named goal shooter in the team of the year. It is the first time a Rams’ player has won the award and the first time a player has been named in team of the year. Isabella Macguire finished fourth in the B-grade best and fairest award and Star Fetu Rizzo finished equal third in the under-19 best and fairest. Those achievements backed up the team’s success on the court, with three sides making finals. The A-grade side made finals for the first
time and made it through to the preliminary final. Vining said it was an exciting time for the club. “It’s amazing that we’ve done so well, with the awards and on court as well,” she said. “I’m extremely blessed to be a part of the club and I’m so excited for the club.” Wallan’s Jesse Davies won the Bowen Medal for the league’s best footballer, finishing on 27 votes, three votes clear of Rupertswood’s Brent Swallow. Davies also won the Ontime Delivery Solutions Player of the Year. Riddell’s Jamie Elliott was named coach of the year. Diggers Rest trio Taylor Hine, Cam McCabe and Mathew Medcraft were named in the team of the year, along with Melton Centrals’ Dylan Weir. Darley scrapes in thanks to a wayward shot at goal With about 40 seconds to go in Darley’s semi-final against North Ballarat City, Devils coach Heath Scotland feared their Ballarat Football League season was over. North had a shot 40 metres out to put them in front and all but seal the win and spot in the next week of finals. But like for much of the day, North struggled to kick straight. On this occasion, it went out on the full to keep the Devils in front by two points. That would be the final result, with the Devils winning 13.3 (81)-11.13 (79). It was a relieved Scotland post game. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think that last shot on goal was our season,” he said.
“Had he kicked a goal, I didn’t think we had time to get another one. “We then slowed it down and got yardage and the ball was in our 50 when the siren went. “We were keen to not finish the season today. We wanted to come back here next week.” Scotland said they started the game well and held their nerve when North came at them in the second quarter. He said they were focused on a fast start after a poor performance last time against North. After executing the game plan in the third quarter, the Devils led by 15 points into the last break. Scotland was confident they could get the job done, but still had a few nervous moments
when a couple of decisions didn’t go their way. “We were confident we could run the game out well,” he said. “From my end I felt we had control of the game.” Dane Grenfell kicked four goals, while Steve Kennedy chipped in with three. Scotland said Kennedy continued his rich vein of form, while Brian Graham returned to his best. While those two were the standouts, Scotland said everyone did their bit. “We had a lot of contributors in the second half,” he said. “We said to them, sometimes it’s not your day, but it’s your moment, and when they had
Bloods run hot for final By Tara Murray Melton is through to the Ballarat Football League grand final for the first time since 2005. The Bloods have been on a run that not many believed possible. With an eighth-straight win on Saturday, defeating East Point in the second semi-final, the Bloods became the first team through to the grand final. For Bloods coach Aaron Tymms it’s been a little bit surreal. “I’m pretty stoked,” he said. “It’s not something I really thought could happen at the start of the year. “How well we were facing up, the last couple of weeks I thought we were a chance.” Tymms, who is in his first year as senior coach and second year at the club, said a grand final appearance meant a lot to the club. “One of my assistant coaches [Andrew Button] was the captain of the 2005 side,” Tymms said. “He thanked me after the game for bringing finals back,” he said. “A lot of younger kids take it for granted. The club’s rooms were packed after the game.” On Saturday against East Point, the Bloods were able to run the game out to win 12.11 (83)-9.10 (64). The two teams traded the lead in the first three quarters, with the Bloods leading by 20 points at the last break. They were able to hold on and stop East Point coming from behind for the second time this finals series. Tymms said it was a good game to sit back and watch. “It was hard fought, but we had a little bit more run which got us across the line,” he said. “It wasn’t until late in the last quarter we knew we had the win. “They had come from 20-plus points down with 14 minutes to go last time we played them. “Last week they were 40 points down and got the win. The boys stood strong. “They are young kids with mature heads.” It was some of the Bloods’ more experienced guys who led the attack. Tymms said Jaycob Hickey, Ben Archard, Mark Orr and Matt Denham were their best. Braedan Kight kicked three goals in the win. Tymms said while a few of the boys pulled up sore they had got through the game mostly uninjured. He said Archard rolled his ankle, but had been able to come back on. The Bloods have the week off before they face either East Point or Darley, who play in a preliminary final this weekend. Having won eight games in a row, Tymms said they were hoping the week off wouldn’t end their momentum. “The week off will be good with a couple of sore bodies,” he said. “We’ll have a light week this week and train on Saturday. “We don’t want to change too much.”
their opportunity to put a stance on the game they did. “The team as a whole stepped up.” In a bonus for the Devils, they got through injury free. Jordan Spiteri, who was a late inclusion, played his first game back in the side. Lachlan Herring, who was the late withdrawal, and Tate Stone should be available this week. The Devils now face East Point in a preliminary final, with Melton awaiting the winner in the grand final. The Devils beat East Point in the final round of the season. Tara Murray
Travel burden spurs Cobra coach’s exit Travis Hodgson won’t coach Bacchus Marsh next season, with the premiership coach deciding to step down from the role. Hodgson, who has coached the Cobras for the past three seasons in the Ballarat Football League, had agreed to coach the side again next season, but had a change of heart last week. Hodgson, who lives in Sunbury, said the travel component was the reason for stepping away from the job. He said that while his family supported him coaching at Bacchus Marsh, he made the decision to spend more time with the family. “I spoke to the committee and the playing group,” he said. “The travel from Sunbury to Northcote [for work] and then to Bacchus Marsh and back to Sunbury – for three days a week for 11 months of the year – was too much. “My kids are between 10 and 17 and they’re at the age where their lives are their busiest.” Hodgson said the decision was tinged with sadness after a great three years with the club. During those three years, the Cobras won a premiership, made another grand final and (this year) finished fifth. “The club is happy with how it turned out,” Hodgson said. “I heavily invested into the club and the minute you start to wane, you can’t do the job well. “It’s been a wonderful three years. I hoped to improve the side and was confident of going places. “I didn’t expect it to explode the way it did. The end result was great, but the journey was just as great. “The footy club has been great to me and my family.” In a statement on their Facebook page, the Cobras praised the work of Hodgson. “Whilst the greatest reward was clearly our drought-breaking BFL premiership in 2016, playing finals in his three years and, along with others, helping us build a very competitive playing list are highlights,” the club said. “His demand for more from the group and his contribution along with many others to the club sees us in a better place than we were in when he arrived. “He will always be a Cobra and hold a special place in our hearts and minds.” Hodgson said he would likely look at other coaching options in the future.

Burras dig in for top win By Tara Murray Diggers Rest is through to the Riddell District Football League grand final, but not without suffering some tense moments on Saturday. The Burras were the better side early on in the preliminary final against Macedon, before the Cats stepped it up in the second half and looked like they might steal the win. The Burras regained the lead with about four minutes left in the final term, staying there for a 10.8 (68)-9.12 (66) victory. Burras playing-coach Jamie Lobb said they always thought, from the start of the year, that they could get to a grand final. “We’ve flown under the radar a bit this year,” he said. “We dropped some matches we shouldn’t have dropped. We have known within the club that our best 22 can match it with anyone. “We’re happy and relieved to get there. We’ve lost close games like that during the year – it’s good to know we can win a close one.” After a brilliant first half on Saturday in which they led by 37 points, the Burras were a different team in the second half. For Lobb, it wasn’t a situation he was happy about. “We should have been further ahead,” he said. “We came out after half-time reactive and flat-footed. We should have never been in that situation at the end. “We were a couple of rotations down and we had our backs to the wall, but we were still able to get the job done.” Lobb, Mathew Medcraft and Thomas Taylor kicked two goals each for the Burras. Taylor Hine was again brilliant, while Stuart Clarke shone on his return from injury. Lobb said it was encouraging knowing that someone like Hine was making a habit of standing up on the big occasions. The win was soured by injuries to Stephen Ruane and Andrew Tyquin. Ruane had to go to hospital to get stitches, while Tyquin hurt his shoulder. Lobb said it was too early to tell if the pair would play in the grand final against Riddell this week. If both end up playing, Lobb said it would be as close to a full-strength side as they would get. Jesse Flannery, Clarke and Cole Laurie all returned from injuries at the weekend. Lobb said Mark Freeth would miss the grand final, while Brent Tuckey was unlikely to get up. “Saturday was the closest we’ve been to full strength since round four,” he said. The Burras and Riddell met in the semi-finals, with the Bombers proving too strong on that occasion. It’ll be a second grand final in three years between the two teams, with Diggers Rest winning the 2016 grand final in extra time. Lobb said they would have to look at doing

something different to the tactics used two weeks ago in the semi-final with Riddell. The senior team is one of three Burras’ sides through to grand finals. The reserves side defeated Rupertswood and
will play Wallan in the grand final, while the C-grade netballers defeated Macedon to win through to a second straight decider. Lobb said it was good reward for the efforts across the whole club.
Springers keen to join grand final party Caroline Springs is through to its first men’s Hockey Victoria grand final. After two of the club’s women’s sides won premierships last year in their first season, the men’s side is keen to join the party this year. The two men’s sides played in preliminary finals on Saturday with mixed results. The men’s metro A north west team won through to the grand final, while the metro B west team was knocked out on penalties. Men’s coach David Gorton said they were thrilled to have made their first grand final in such a short period of time. Gorton said once they gained the lead early against MUHC in metro A north, they were able to control momentum of the game. “We worked hard in the first half in a high intensity game and were up 2-0 at half-time,” he said. “We pretty much put players in prime positions to sustain the lead and weather the pressure. “We managed to score on a break to get it 3-0 and the match was absolutely done by then.” Nick Toogood, Jatinder Singh and Paramjit Dhillon were the goalscorers for Springers. Gorton said their forward line ran the defence ragged. It was the first time the side had been able to field their best line-up and having got through without injuries, they look set to have the same line-up this week. “It’s the first time in this competition and we’re playing against more established clubs,” Gorton said. “We’re playing some good level of hockey and hopefully it can continue.” The Springers face Footscray in the grand final on Saturday. The two teams played each other in the semi-finals just over a week a go. Gorton said they’re better prepared this time around. The metro B team just fell short of reaching the grand final. Scores were level at 1-1 after regular time, before Springers lost on penalties to Melton 3-2. The Springers have three of their four senior teams in grand finals. Both women’s sides won through to second straight grand finals appearances last weekend.
Lakers’ play for grand revenge Caroline Springs was out for vengeance after its semi-final shocker and got that with a 28-point win over Spotswood in the Western Region Football League senior women’s preliminary final at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Lakers were disappointed in a 60-point semi-final loss to Manor Lakes seven days earlier, but coach Anthea Stathakis felt it was important to move on quickly. “You can’t be dwelling on previous games, so all we were focusing on was the Spotswood game and what we had to do to get up there,” Stathakis said. “The girls had a really good game today. We’re over the moon to be in the grand final.” Caroline Springs came out with intent early in the game. The Lakers were up 20 to zip at quarter-time and extended their lead to 30 by half-time. The second half was more of an arm wrestle, but Stathakis decided to rest some players in preparation for their grand final 30 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 11, 2018
against Manor Lakes. “Towards the end I did take off some of my players, especially my midfield, to rest them for next week,” she said. Alexandra Fato capped a starring role for Caroline Springs with two goals. Fato has stamped herself as one of the best midfielders in the competition. “Just the way she reads the play and gets the ball out of the midfield to our forward line is unbelievable,” Stathakis said. Carissa Whiley was superb in the ruck, Maddison-Eve Fenech was prolific in the midfield and Caitlin Pretty was the main target in attack, finishing with two goals. Teenager Taylah Kolevski had been a revelation for the Lakers this finals series. Caroline Springs will face Manor Lakes in the grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday at 5.15pm.
