Darley sand mine bid By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Pride on the line Melton will turn maroon for the Bloods this weekend. The Melton Football Club senior men’s team has made it through to the Ballarat Football League grand final for the first time in 13 years. Club president Greg Davis said it had “been quite a long time coming”. Of the 22 players in the team, 21 have come up through the ranks, playing with the club’s juniors. “It’s been three-and-a-half years in the making to get the Bloods out to a grand final,” Davis said. “We’ve been bringing the boys up, coaching them and holding on to them for the senior’s team. “These guys have stayed around and they’ll hopefully get their grand win this weekend.” Davis said the Bloods, like football clubs everywhere, were the heart and soul of their community and involved in a range of philanthropic work. The Melton Football Club holds numerous fundraisers, including one for cystic fibrosis research this year that raised more than $13,000. “And through the football clubs a lot of young men and women get jobs,” Davis said. There are plans to turn a former World War II training camp in Darley into a sand mine. Zhong Yin Group Australia is proposing to operate a 15.8-hectare open pit quarry at 48 Camerons Road, Darley, with access to the site from 222 Lerderderg Gorge Road. Project manager Andrew Helps told Star Weekly that truckloads of sand from other parts of the state were already being used in Bacchus Marsh and the western suburbs. Mining sand from the area was the “logical” solution, he said. “There are already two sand mines in the area working the same deposit,” Mr Helps said. “If you look at the recent utterings of state governments, one of the critical issues in the western suburbs is shortage of construction material. “There’s a whole lot of uses for this deposit [sand], which has been at the site for a long time … we’re doing the logical extension of the mining that’s already going on.” Ahead of applying for a permit from the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, and a planning permit from Moorabool council, Zhong Yin Group Australia is required to hold community information sessions. One has been planned for 7pm tonight (September 18) at Bacchus Marsh Golf Club. “When it comes to quarries, this one is about as benign as it gets,” Mr Helps said. “There won’t be any blasting … we may have to [blast] in the future, but we’d certainly seek permission.” If the project goes ahead, the site will be fenced with a 2.5-metre high cyclone fence and a two-metre earthen beam inside to screen the quarry. Nearby property owners will be given the opportunity to sell their houses to Zhong Yin Group Australia. Mr Helps said the company was also open to work with VicRoads to improve the road network near the site. But several residents have expressed their concerns about the project, particularly about traffic, noise and dust. “I’m concerned about access with traffic … as a resident that’s going to be a crow’s fly 50 metres from the boundary, the peace and tranquility we have here will be lost,” Darley woman Allison said. Noel Langshaw lives on Camerons Road. He says he was hoping to retire and live there for the rest of his life. “I’m not going to be able to do that anymore,” Mr Langshaw says. “We’ve been here for over 20 years.”

Melton patients wait for change By Sumeyya Ilanbey and Tate Papworth Germaine fears her story is all too familiar to Melton residents. The single mum says she has been forced to wait up to three hours at a bulk-billed clinic before being seen, and has often delayed a visit to the GP until her health deteriorates significantly. The Melton woman, who asked that her last name not be used, says she feels Melton’s health services are lagging. She has lived in the area for the past two decades and in that time has witnessed the

population boom and the infrastructure lag. “Melton is getting forgotten,” Germaine said. She says there are a lack of clinics which bulk-bill, of those that do there is a significant wait to see a doctor. Being asked to pay upfront at other clinics can be a massive hit on the family budget. The closest hospital is at Sunshine, a 28-minute drive. “I know when I was pregnant with my children our only option was to go to Sunshine or into the city,” Germaine said. “When you’re in labour, you want something that’s close, and there’s only so much that Sunshine can do.”

Just 71 per cent of emergency patients (those requiring treatment within 10 minutes) were treated at Sunshine Hospital on time in 2016-17, according to the federal government’s MyHospitals website. The average for medium metropolitan hospitals with an emergency department was 79 per cent. The gap widens for less urgent care. For Sunshine patients requiring treatment within 30 minutes of arrival, 51 per cent were seen on time, compared to the average for similar hospitals of 65 per cent. Just 51 per cent of those requiring

semi-urgent treatment at Sunshine (within 60 minutes) were seen on time, compared to the peer group average of 73 per cent. Non-urgent wait times (treatment within 120 minutes) sat at 72 per cent, well below the peer group average of 90 per cent. Germaine has called on the state government and state candidates to “invest in the west” and build a public hospital in Melton. Her pleas come on the eve of a Melton delegation heading to Parliament armed with more than 8000 signatures supporting a public hospital in the region. Rise in sex diseases Melton is feeling the heat on sexually transmitted infections, with a sharp rise in the number of reported cases. Between 2012 and 2017, rates of chlamydia increased by 113 per cent, gonorrhoea by 410 per cent and syphilis 639 per cent across the municipality. Social media and dating apps are being blamed for the surge, with the health department reporting Victoria had the highest number of STIs last year since records started in 1991. Deputy chief health officer Brett Sutton said it’s estimated one in every six people would get an STI. “While this [increase] can be associated with more testing, improved testing technology and a growing population, this rise is also linked to changing sexual behaviours,” Dr Sutton said. “In particular, social media, dating websites and apps are changing the way we meet, connect and form relationships. “There are many types of STIs. The good news is most are curable and all are treatable. If left untreated, they can cause long-term effects on the body, including infertility.” The health department is urging people to start talking about STIs, get tested and seek treatment if necessary. Dr Sutton said the best way to prevent STI transmission was to use condoms. “STIs don’t care about age, sexuality, income or where you live,” he said. STI testing is available from GPs, family planning clinics, community health services and specialist sexual health clinics. For more information, visit betterhealth.vic.gov.au/STI

When eight-year-old Emily heard about the plight of Australian farmers, it spurred her to take action. “I think it’s very bad their animals are getting really badly sick because they don’t have enough water or food,” Emily says. “When I found out I wanted to save some money for them.” She wrote a letter to the junior school council at Myrniong Primary School to help her raise money for drought-stricken farmers. Pupils dressed up as farmers for the day and held a range of activities, including laying a silver-coin trail measuring 164.5 metres. The school raised more than $1000. “I think I will like to organise more fundraisers because I like having fundraisers and I like raising money for farmers, and all the people that are sick, and animals,” Emily says.

Smart work on dents Sandra and Jason Noach try to lead environmentally sustainable lives. So when the husband-and-wife duo, of Ravenhall-based Extreme Dents, embarked on their journey to create IQpod – a portable automotive damage repair centre – sustainability was a focus. The centre uses filtration to ensure zero emissions of volatile organic compounds (such as paints and fuel oils), odours, particulates and other waste. IQpod was recently announced as a finalist in two categories – environmental protection and small and medium enterprises – in the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards. The IQpod is small enough to fit at shopping centre carparks and car dealerships, where

drivers can get the small scuffs and dents on their cars fixed in a few hours. “It’s been a long journey for us,” Ms Noach said. “We built the prototype 18 months ago, and now we’re ready to expand it. “It’s ideal for when you reverse into your letter box, or have a small accident, and it doesn’t warrant going through insurance.” Sustainability Victoria chief executive Stan Krpan described IQpod as “exceptional”. “Extreme Dents demonstrated to the judges that they have translated the principles of sustainability into practice,” he said. The award winners will be announced on October 11. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Birth of a new campaign By Sumeyya Ilanbey Meet baby Derek – born on September 7, he is the west’s 10,000th newborn this year – a monumental milestone for the western suburbs, where there have been on average 270 babies born weekly since January. With that comes added pressure to the already over-stretched maternal and children’s services in the region. Derek’s birth coincided with the launch of a new campaign, Generation West, which calls on the state candidates to commit to investment in family health services ahead of the November election. The campaign is calling for a centre of parenting excellence, expanded services for vulnerable families, a boost to dental health for children, more support for parents before and after birth and a review of maternal and paediatric services in Melbourne’s west. Campaign spokeswoman, and Moonee Valley councillor, Samantha Byrne said the first 1000 days of a child’s life was critical, but services to support children and their parents in the region were lacking. “The service just hasn’t kept up with demand,” Ms Byrne said. “About 14,000 babies will be born in Melbourne’s west this year, and they’re being left behind.” Derek was born at Sunshine Hospital at 3am on September 7. His parents Jemma and Jordan Mizzi, of Kurunjang, did not attend any birth classes because they were booked out. Ms Mizzi told Channel Seven she was induced at Sunshine Hospital on September 3, but asked to go home because there weren’t enough beds. “They definitely need more rooms and services,” Ms Mizzi said. “[The arrival of

Jemma and Jordan Mizzi with baby Derek. (Supplied)

Derek] was amazing – a very long experience, but the staff were wonderful.” The community is being urged to get behind Generation West and lobby their state candidates. “Melbourne’s west is a wonderful place to live and raise a family, but if we don’t get funding to expand services, families will face

real problems accessing early years support they might need,” Ms Byrne said. “It’s not only our massive growth but the lack of proper planning and provision. “We’re not asking for the impossible, just a commitment from our local MPs to act now.” To get involved, visit www.generationwest. org.au

Pledge to fix primary school Planning for the stage one redevelopment of Diggers Rest Primary School will be funded if the Coalition wins the November state election. The opposition has pledged $2 million for stage one of the master plan, which includes extensive refurbishments to the administration building and creating a prep learning centre. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Sunbury Liberal candidate Cassandra Marr visited the school last week to make the election pledge. “Melbourne’s out-of-control population boom has not spared the north-western suburbs from immense growth pressures,” Mr Guy said. “Cass Marr is a great advocate for this community and is always arguing the case for more local funding so health, education and police services keep up with population growth.” The school’s population has quadrupled in four years to 210 students this year. Principal Rachelle Hedger said student numbers would increase to 260 next year. “We’ve been actively planning for growth over the last couple of years,” Ms Hedger said. “We aim to empower all students to excel and it will be exciting to see facilities in place that will ensure we continue working towards this goal.” Ms Marr, a former Diggers Rest Primary School student, said she was “very passionate” about the school. Redesign plans roll out By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Many people also said they valued the station’s - Jacinta Allen heritage

’’

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and Victorian Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan launched the design plans recently. Ms Allan said community feedback about improving accessibility, parking and security motivated a major part of the design. “We’ve listened to this feedback and included all of these elements in the upgrade design,” Ms Allan said. “Many people also said they valued the station’s heritage, so we’ve retained the historic train turntable as well as ensuring any new infrastructure is sympathetic to the existing station buildings.” The Bacchus Marsh station upgrade is part of the $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival – a joint state and federal government initiative. Feedback is being sought on landscaping and maintaining the station’s heritage character. Details, visit www.regionalrailrevival.vic. gov.au/ballarat

Diggers Rest loo lock anger Commuters are busting for a solution to unlock the toilets at Diggers Rest railway station. The existing toilets and passenger waiting area were upgraded as part of the Sunbury electrification project in 2012 and the toilets have remained locked ever since. Diggers Rest resident David O’Connor has long campaigned for the toilets to be reopened for public use, with no success. “There are no other toilets at the station,” Mr O’Connor said. “The toilets were upgraded so that they were disability accessible but people with mobility issues can’t use them. “It’s a park-and-ride railway station, which means that people from Melton, Toolern Vale, Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges need functional and accessible amenities to use. I don’t see why the toilets aren’t open.” Mr O’Connor raised the issue with state candidates at a transport forum in Melton last week and intends to deliver a petition to the state MP for Sunbury in November after the state election. In a letter to Mr O’Connor in 2015, Metro Trains said that its policy was to only provide public amenities when stations are staffed. Diggers Rest Station is unstaffed. “Public amenities are unavailable at unstaffed stations such as Diggers Rest due to vandalism, anti-social behavior and criminal activity,” the letter stated.

The Bacchus Marsh train station redesign has been released, with construction expected to start later this year. Plans for the station include a new carpark with 100 spaces, a second platform, pedestrian overpass, improved bus bay layout and bicycle hoops. The new platform, and an extra three kilometres of track, will allow two trains to stop at the station at the same time to improve service reliability.

Artist snaps up award honour By Tate Papworth A Hillside photographer has had her work acknowledged as some of the best in the country. Fresh off her success at the Victoria Professional Photography Awards, Jacinta Dal Ben has claimed four silver awards at the Australian Institute of Professional Photography’s National Professional Photography Awards. Dal Ben said she was thrilled with the recognition, given the standard of competition

was so high. “There was over 445 entrants and over 1800 entries,” she said. “To be able to enter into the national awards you have to be at a certain level, which is normally two awards received at state level, so the standard is incredibly high.” Dal Ben entered three categories. “I entered three images I had in the state competition – a pet one and two newborn ones,” she said. “I also had a single capture portrait. In that category it pretty much has to be straight

out of camera. You’re not allowed to add any other elements or texture – it has to be ‘as captured’. “I was thrilled that all four of my entries received silver awards.” However that wasn’t Dal Ben’s only triumph. “There’s also a component where six people … are picked to go on a weekend away with two top landscape photographers. “I was the first picked, which was exciting. “I’m not actually sure where we’re going yet, but we head off in March next year.” Details: www.jacintadalben.com.au

A study in working hard Coburn Primary School principal Vicki Minton is celebrating a significant achievement – her pupils’ outstanding NAPLAN results. The grade three pupils’ average score for reading, writing, numeracy, spelling, and grammar and punctuation has increased compared with last year, while the scores for pupils in grade five in the areas of reading, spelling, and grammar and punctuation have grown. The biggest improvement was by the grade three pupils in reading – a mammoth 41.1 per cent increase, compared with the state average of 3.5 per cent. Ms Minton credited this significant increase to the “hard work” the staff have been doing over the past three-and-a-half years to improve students’ comprehension skills. “We’ve engaged top quality consultants to work with our staff,” Ms Minton said. “We’ve also done a lot of professional learning for

our teachers to build their capacity. We’ve changed our reading block to incorporate an intervention system … where we identify children who are just below level … and give them intensive work with the classroom teacher four days a week.” The school will make a concerted effort next year to improve grade five students’ writing skills. Ms Minton said everyone at the school had been working hard. “I’m absolutely over the moon with the growth we’ve had this year,” she said. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Sudanese Mothers Coalition in Victoria, with members from Melton, Brimbank, Maribyrnongg and Wy W ndham, will use the moneyy to organise a series off seminars to teach the South Sudanese community about the impacts off using methamphetamine, also known as “ice”. Coalition chairperson Monica Majak said manyy South Sudanese parents lacked knowledge about drugs and the seminars would equip them with the skills to identify drugg use and reach out to help services. She said some South Sudanese parents were having difficulties with their children and drug use. “They’ll be using drugs … and the parent doesn’t know about drugs,” s,” Ms Majak Ma said. Maj “We can learn about drugs [through these seminars]. When your child [is] takingg drugs, you don’t know. Sometimes you can just, like, be shocked when you see your child … the child behaving different ff ly and you don’t know actually what’s going on.” Ms Majakk said the group also hoped the seminars would deter young South Sudanese people from f dabblingg in illicit drugg use. “Those who are still not affected byy drugs, if theyy can come to attend training it will be good for them,” she said. “Theyy will say to other kids, ‘Drugs is not good’.” The Sudanese Mothers Coalition in Victoria

Diggers Rest historians are hoping to secure a magical piece of memorabilia for their collection. An autograph book from 1910 that includes a signed photo and message from famed American magician Harry Houdini has been in the family of Wayne Johnson’s late wife for more than a century. The Toolern Vale resident said the autograph book had been passed down to his wife, Kay, from her great-grandmother.

“Kay’s great-grandmother used to live in a hotel and she used to collect the signatures of people who came into the hotel,” Mr Johnson told Star Weekly. “A lot of the other entries in there are signed, ‘a member of the Houdini company’, which also helps to verify the authenticity of Houdini himself ’s signature.” In an era when aviation technology was emerging, Houdini brought his Voisin biplane to Australia in 1910, making three successful flights at Diggers Rest. Newspaper reports from the time detailed Houdini’s ascents. Diggers Rest History Project members put out a call for donations to help buy the autograph book from Mr Johnson. They’ve raised about $1500 towards the $2000 goal. Mr Johnson said he was keen to ensure that the book stayed “close to home”.

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE When Kathryn Brett-Davidson’s father was battling the last stages of mesothelioma seven years ago, she decided she wanted to become an aged care nurse. The Grant Lodge nurse spoke with Sumeyya Ilanbey during Celebrating Aged Care Week. What’s your connection to Moorabool?

people who are at the end stage of their life and help them have as much dignity as possible’. I love that’s is a holistic care – it’s not like a short-term arrangement. So you get to really know the patient and what their care needs are.

I’d known about Bacchus March for a few years before working here. I’d been coming here … for lunch. It’s a really pretty town. I found out about the position at Djerriwarrh Health Service’s [Grant Lodge], applied and was very lucky to get it.

What’s been some of the highlights about working as an aged care nurse?

What’s your favourite thing about working in Moorabool?

Highlights for me has been just being able to make a difference to people every day. Even if it’s something as simple as a smile – their face lights up. Being able to put patients at ease, and reassure them.

Probably the community feel. Like, it’s got a really personalised sort of touch to it – the residents are a very close community. A lot of residents know each other, they’ve lived in the community for a long time. And the nurses at Grant Lodge … have grown up here or lived in the district for a long time – so it gives a personal, family touch.

Probably, like anywhere, everything is getting bigger. Parking is always a big issue. When we’re leaving work, end of the day with the school traffic, it’s difficult to get access out of town. But other than that, I think it’s pretty much a great town. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? I love Flanagan’s [Border Inn] and the Baby Black cafe. My mother-in-law was Irish so my husband started taking me there – it

I don’t think we really get enough credit or publicity for the things we do. All you tend to see is the bad side and when [aged care nurses] do bad things – and I’m not saying that doesn’t happen. But I don’t think the media touches on a lot of the good stuff and how hard we work. As aged care nurses we get our hands dirty and work hard and we do holistic care – everything from personal care, clinical care to mental health care, spiritual care.

(Joe Mastroianni)

What would you change about the area if you could?

What have been some of the struggles?

has a cultural significance to me. It’s kind of special. Food is always amazing and so is the atmosphere. Baby Black is also really amazing, it’s laid-back, relaxed. Why did you decide to get into aged care? Prior to nursing, I was a hairdresser. So I always

worked with people, but I went in and did my nursing training [about seven years ago]. My father was diagnosed with mesothelioma when I was in my early 30s … and when I was 35, he chose to pass away at home. And it was in the last couple of weeks of his life we had a palliative care team come in every day and I thought ‘that’s what I want to do. I want to help

What’s one thing people would be surprised to find out about you? Going from hairdressing, which was such a lavish, fashion industry position where you always had your nails perfect, hair done … and then into an industry like this. But there isn’t anything else – pretty much with me, what you see is what you get.

Lester Ellis Jnr goes to work with students. (Joe Mastroianni)

All the world’s a stage Australian actor Lester Ellis jnr will be mentoring aspiring film stars at a Rockbank studio. The 27-year-old, who’s starred on television series Underbelly and Fat Tony, says he’s thrilled to be volunteering his time to teach youngsters about acting. “The secret to acting is simple: you’ve got to love it,” Ellis says. “It’s a harsh, crazy industry and it’s very competitive but if you love it, it’s an ear you have to scratch. “If you don’t do it, you live with regret.” Ellis says he was approached by friend and

The Studio Performing Arts School founder, Natalie Sette, to offer acting classes for the children of the west. He said most acting schools are in the eastern suburbs, which makes it hard for children of the west to find opportunities closer to home. “We target primary school-aged kids, who haven’t had a knock in their confidence, haven’t had body image issues,” Ellis says. “My job is to keep that artistic flame burning.” Details, email natalie@thestudiopas.com.au Sumeyya Ilanbey

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir can’t wait to go crusin’ for more Ceylon fusion COLOMBO MIXED RICE

Meet Isuru Madusanka and Chiran Hemadasa – heroes of Melbourne food and restaurants. Not just the western suburbs, and not only in the cheap eats field. Though they are both of those, too. No – what they are doing at their fine establishment, Fusion Ceylon, warrants acclamation beyond any geographical or price restrictions. CTS has been a fan of the place since its doors opened a few years back. But there’s no doubt – based on the visits being used to compile this story – that the Fusion Ceylon crew has lifted its game; a lot. The food is cooked with flair and imagination, and presented beautifully, all the while fully retaining its funky Sri Lankan/Asian soul. And as the use of the word “fusion” in its title hints, there’s a lot of wok cooking going on here. That means wait times will rarely stretch beyond 15 minutes. Prices are ridiculously low. Much – but by no means all – of the fun and games is to be found on the regularly changing specials list. Singaporean chilli crab with egg fried rice and vegetable chop suey is a dream. The superb rice is fab, fluffy and freshly prepared. The simple vegetables on the side are very good. The shellfish component consists of three blue swimmer crabs. Even with that number, the amount of your actual crab meat to be had is modest – and getting at it is messy, sticky

FUSION CEYLON Address: 27 Watton Street, Werribee Phone: 0433 696 726 fun. But, hey, it IS all about fresh crab, the mess goes with the territory. The mild sauce has good flavour and the price is $16.50. Speaking of finger-lickin’ … spicy Kentucky-style fried chicken with biryani dazzles. I’m told my three pieces are coated in a mix that contains cumin, cayenne and cardamom. The taste, though, is rather muted – if anything I’d like to see this fried chicken really turbocharged with spices. There’s a tangy tamarind-based sauce to go with the poultry. And another gravy to go with the top-shelf biryani rice. On the side is a sticky eggplant pickle. This dish, too, costs an amazing $16.50. Colombo mixed rice ($13.50) comes from the regular menu. It comes with three meats (pork, chicken, beef), shrimp and a fried egg, with a plump skewer of chicken slathered with house-made tomato sauce on the side. This is a great Melbourne restaurant.

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Meander through Munich Stephen Linnell discovers a German gem. It’s not the first city that springs to mind when planning a European vacation. But a visit to the southern Bavarian city of Munich should be on most travellers’ bucket list. The birthplace and home to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party, Munich (or Muenchen – ‘by the Monks’) is the capital of Bavaria and Germany’s third largest city (behind Berlin and Hamburg). Primarily known for its breweries and world famous annual Oktoberfest beer festival, Munich is also the launching place for other delightful destinations. Our journey starts with a three-hour bicycle tour through the city (e-bikes are preferred), taking in historical landmarks, university campuses and points of interest. It’s a great way to explore and learn about a new town. Our tour took us through the English Gardens – a huge, informal public park where you can either enjoy a beer or watch surfers catch a wave on the man-made Eisbach River. Check out the top-rated tours from Tripadvisor to find a suitable tour, including a Hitler and Third Reich walking tour which takes you to the locations of some of Hitler’s famous speeches and Nazi landmarks. One of our highlights was a small group, full day tour to King Ludwig’s castle at Neuschwanstein – the castle that inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Built on a hill at the base of the Alps, the 19th century castle is well worth a visit. The scenic 90-minute drive from Munich is a treat in itself. The rolling green pastures are littered with lazy, overfed cows and neat, classic Bavarian homes complete with window shutters and neatly stacked wood piles.

From there, we visited Linderhof Palace, a smaller, less opulent version of France’s Palace of Versailles, but nonetheless riveting in itself. Our tour concluded with a walk through the quaint village of Oberammergau, with its wood-carving shops and homes with painted murals. The following day was spent walking through

Munich’s CBD, including lunch (and a large beer) at Hofbrauhaus, then a stroll through the Viktualienmarkt (an incredible food market) and main shopping drag at Marienplatz. For those who have not been to Germany before, you will be amazed by the low prices and range of food and other items compared to most other European countries.

Our next stop was a tour of Dachau Concentration Camp – scene of more than 41,000 deaths, primarily during WW2. Incredibly moving, incredible waste of life. An experience to remember, always. On our final day we boarded a train for a trip to Salzburg in Austria, birthplace of Mozart and setting for the film and musical The Sound

of buyers use print in their property search.1

In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool.2

On about one hectare in Kurunjang with its beautiful rural outlook, sits this large residence with a great fit-out and much loved and well tendered-to outdoor spaces. Whether you sub-divide and develop (STCA) or enjoy the chance to own so much land, close to all amenities, this is a unique opportunity. A large kitchen, meals and lounge area has a great understated feel and could easily be updated. There are three carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes and the main bedroom with a walk-in robe and en suite. There’s extra living space with a separate two bedroom self-contained unit on title. The central courtyard is paved with a deep pergola housing a hothouse-type space – there’s plenty of space for the green thumb to nurture seedlings here. The manicured garden features a thriving vegetable garden. The three-car garage is another advantage.

Walking distance to Little Blind Creek Reserve, Kurunjang Recreation Reserve, primary and secondary schools and around shopping, this well thought-out property has great spaces inside and out. A cosy living nook with a wall-set gas fireplace is tiled while an arched entryway leads to the large open plan kitchen, meals and lounge area, also featuring a slate tile. The kitchen has quality hardwood cabinetry and stone benches. The four bedrooms have hardwood flooring and built-in robes. Upstairs, the main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in robe. Out the back, the paved pergola is larger than most and in impeccable condition. The kidney-shaped in-ground pool is a top drawcard with summer around the corner, with a courtyard to the side being a fantastic second outdoor area. Loads of off-street parking is another feature.

This ranch-style property offers an easy-to-live-in layout and all the space you need, set on about 730 square metres. As it’s a quick walk from Woodgrove Shopping Centre, you’ll enjoy being close to all you need, as well as having all the space you need. There are three carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes, two living areas including a carpeted sitting room and the open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area at the rear of the property with a split-system, hardwood floors and a wood combustion fire. The kitchen is a good size with solid timber white country-style cabinetry, great bench space and stainless-steel appliances including the oven with a five-burner gas cooktop. There’s a deep and paved undercover entertaining area, an established lawn and well-maintained garden beds out the back. The double garage has internal access. Close to schools.

This appealing property sports low-maintenance spaces inside and out – and is a blank canvas awaiting inspiration and imagination. The house has a large open-plan tiled kitchen, meals and lounge area, as well as three carpeted and good-sized bedrooms with built-in robes (the main with en suite and walk-in robe). Out front, the facade is eye-catching in a timeless style, the low-maintenance gardens fitting right in. The concrete aggregate path and driveway and the generous L-shaped concreted outdoor area with low-maintenance garden beds are other features. Out the back there is also a finished undercover alfresco area. The garage has drive-through access.

HOPETOUN PARK 18 Hammond Circuit, 3340 YPA Estate Agents Melton: 9746 8899

Price: $1.050 million – $1.15 million

Built in the late ’90s to a high standard and with great attention to detail by the professional builder-owner, this terrific house on about 0.76 hectares is replete with updates that add considerably to its overall appeal. Another great feature of this fine property is a pristine self-contained weatherboard unit with ramped verandah, a boon for extended family, guests or teen. In the main house, bathrooms and kitchens have been hit with the revamp stick, with the new flooring that flows seamlessly through many rooms a bright star. Looking for all the world like matte

floor planks in oaken grey, the floors are actually porcelain tiles that deliver today’s aesthetic plus all-time liveability. Big tick. Entry to the house is to a long walkway, along which are the fitted fourth bedroom, set up as a study with expansive work station and shelving; and the main bedroom. This has a walk-in robe and a sleek and recently completed en suite with walk-in shower and a bowl-basin on a Caesarstone-topped 2pac vanity. The walkway then heads past a lounge room under a soaring ceiling, with clerestory windows admitting streams of northerly light, new grey carpet and

an Archer wood heater. Next up is the large kitchen and meals zone. A waterfall Caesarstone island bench, a stack of Tassie oak cabinetry, an appliance cupboard, dishwasher and an Ilve 900mm cooker fit out the cooks’ domain. Living areas just keep coming … next door, behind double sliders, is a spacious rumpus room that has the same textured vertical blinds as seen throughout. A four-door closet in here is one of many storage solutions all through. Along a rear hallway are two fitted bedrooms that flank a smartly revamped bathroom and a large storage-rich laundry

with Caesarstone bench. Ducted heating and superior ceiling and wall insulation are other indoor features. The meals zone opens to a large covered (north-facing) alfresco area, while a gazebo perches in the back gardens beyond a full-width, south-facing verandah. The 20 x 8-metre shed/workshop, accessed via a separate driveway, easily meets tradie and hobbyist needs. A pair of double garages (one with internal access), a 5kW solar system and 25,000-litre water tank are other drawcards. Carole Levy 25 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 18, 2018

Fantastic Agent!

*****

This was my first time selling a property. Cory made the entire process easy, was always available to answer questions and guided me through the whole process seamlessly. He kept me up to date with all enquiries on my property and touched base regularly. Opens and inspections were handled well and the end result was a great sale in a challenging market in only 4 weeks. Annette - 10 Citronelle Circuit

*****

Cory did a wonderful job recently selling our house and got us a great price above our expectations. Having used Cory to sell other properties in our family before, there was no question when we were considering which agent to use this time around. Cory was always keeping us up to date throughout the sale process and is very professional. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Cory as our agent for any future sales.

I found Cory and Kellie Cassar to be extremely professional and supportive. They made sure at all times I was constantly updated on all aspects of the sale. I would highly recommend this team to anyone who is considering buying or selling a property.

With its many tumultuous events, 2017 was another rich year for our nation’s political cartoonists who continue look behind the lines of the daily political sideshows to capture the spirit of our democracy in all its passion, scepticism and humour. ‘Behind the Lines’ is a travelling exhibition developed by Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, proudly supported by the National Collection Institutions Touring and Outreach program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.

Vegetation Management Near Overhead Powerlines As part of this program, the street trees and power lines are inspected regularly to ensure no impact to power supply through conflict with trees. All vegetation maintenance work is required to be carried out in compliance with the Electrical Safety Act (Electrical Line Clearance) Regulations 2015. These regulations stipulate a minimum safe clearance between trees and power lines, to keep re-growth clear of power lines. Melton City Council is responsible for management of power lines clearance in the area highlited in the map below. The tree works will be carried out from November 2018 for a period of 4 months. Regular auditing occurs throughout the year.

Want to place an ad but not sure where to start? Call our helpful classified team between 8:30am-5pm Mon-Fri for FREE advice!

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO

12399289-SN38-18

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.

SPORT Darley fights to the end, but finally runs out of puff Darley’s finals campaign in the Ballarat Football League ran out of steam against East Point in a preliminary final on Saturday. Having come from fourth through to the preliminary final, the Devils were no match for East Point. The Kangaroos did most of the damage in the first half, registering 19 scoring shots to the Devils’ four. The Kangaroos went on with the job in the second half, eventually winning 15.18 (108)-5.6 (36). Devils coach Heath Scotland said they didn’t have the legs to run with a side that was much better on the day. “East Point were fantastic and showed why they finished on top of the ladder,” he said.

“I’m really proud of our boys. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back. “We had six players not train during the week. “Injuries are no excuse. There was no more left in us. “I’m proud we kept fighting. We’re disappointed, though, we haven’t made it through to another grand final.” The wet conditions worked in East Point’s favour, with the Kangaroos dominating all game. Scotland said the Devils didn’t have the answers. “They played the conditions better and had more run,” he said. “We were beaten in most facets of the game.

After half-time, we knew the margin might blow out. “We played high-risk football, but we didn’t execute. “We weren’t worried about the margin, but they didn’t let us back into the game.” Mark Hanson was the only multiple goalscorer for the Devils, kicking three. Scotland said defenders Jacob Zeestraten and Darren Leonard were fantastic despite everything that was thrown at them. He said Steven Kennedy was again good, while Luther Baker was solid and Dylan Reid battled hard. Scotland said the match was similar to several of the Devils’ other losses, with too few contributing.

“It’s been the story of our year,” he said. “We had 40 or 41 play for the club in the seniors. We had six or seven under-18s debut. “We had notable injuries to Dan Roy, Leigh Spiteri, Matt Inglis, Jake Edwards, Dylan Reid and Brian Graham. “To get where we got is really good – the guys kept on delivering.” Scotland will coach the side for a third season, having already signed on for next year. He said they had started the process of signing their key players. “We’ll lick our wounds and learn from them,” he said. Tara Murray

Diggers’ go back-to-back By Tara Murray It wasn’t pretty, nor high scoring, but it didn’t matter for Diggers Rest as it won its second Riddell District Football League reserves premiership in two years. The team to beat all season, the Burras were surprisingly beaten by Wallan in the second semi-final. They ensured it wasn’t a repeat performance when they found themselves lining up against Wallan in the grand final. Diggers Rest claimed the flag with a 6.8 (44)-2.1 (13) win. Burras coach Anthony Power said he didn’t expect Wallan to be able to score as easily against them this time around. “It was very low scoring, which we knew it would be,” he said. “I have a really good backline and a couple of weeks ago when we played them, I had four of my backs out. “This week we were lucky enough to have

them back.” Power was right – Wallan scored just two goals for the game. With the Burras defence doing the job at one end, the forwards did just enough to get the premiership. Power said all the pressure was on Wallan to get the win. He said he knew the Burras just had to come out and do what they had all season. His one concern was the big Clarke Oval ground which they’ve struggled at in the past, but it wasn’t an issue this time. It wasn’t until the end of the game the celebrations started. “It was a very tight game and we worked harder then them in the end I thought,” Power said. “In grand finals I never think we’ve got it won until the siren goes. “About four minutes to go, the guys were patting me on the back saying you’ve got it, I said ‘not yet’.”

Craig Thompson was the only multiple goalkicker, kicking two goals. He was named in the best, along with Steven Fogarty and Jarrod Rowan. Skipper Jeff Heritage was awarded the best on ground medal. “He’s Diggers Rest elite,” Power said of Heritage. “He’s our captain and just a workhorse. We’re rapt for him.” Having coached the reserves premiership in 2016, Power said this one was a lot different. He said for him, this one was more special. “I built this side the last two years,” he said. “Last time I just walked into a premiership-winning side. “We’ve kept five or six from the first year and we’ve turned them over. “We had a lot of young kids come up from the under-18s which is good. “We’re going to be strong for a long time.” For more stories and pictures from the grand finals, go to www.starweekly.com.au

Diggers Rest pushed Rupertswood all the way in the Riddell District Netball League C-grade grand final on Saturday. Playing for their first premiership since 2009, the Burras pushed the two-time reigning premiers. No more than two goals separated the teams at the break and every time the Sharks looked to get away, the Burras reeled them back. With scores level midway through the last quarter, the teams traded goals and finished regular time 22 apiece The Sharks lifted another level in overtime and were a little more composed, especially under the ring. In the first period of overtime, the Sharks shot six goals to three. They switched ends, but it did not halt the Sharks’ momentum and they went on to win 32-26. It is the second successive year the Burras have lost to the Sharks in the C-grade grand final. It was one of three premierships for the day for the Sharks as they also won the under-19s and B-grade grand finals. Macedon took out the main match, beating Romsey in the A-grade grand final 56-44. The second quarter was the difference between the two sides and the Cats moved out to a lead the Redbacks could not close. Gleeson goes out in style with a premiership victory Diggers Rest captain Tom Gleeson went out with a bang in the Riddell District Football League grand final on Sunday. With a flight to Canada booked for next week and no return date, it could be a while before he pulls on the jumper for the Burras. But he made what could be his last game a good one, and was named best on ground in his side’s win against Riddell. Gleeson, who was part of the Burras’ 2016 grand final, said this one was special in a different way. “It’s pretty good and there’s no way to cap the feeling really,” he said. “I think the last time I cried for 25 minutes after, thanks to losing five or six grand finals beforehand. That was a weight off the shoulders. “That one was for the club, this one feels like it was for us. “We wanted it a lot … we deserved it.” While Gleeson was awarded the Doug McIntyre Medal as best on ground he was

quick to praise all his teammates. However, he said while everyone contributed at some point of the game, he also thought there was someone else who deserved the medal. “I think Taylor Hine is the stiffest man in Australia right now. He was incredible all day. “I took a couple of marks at big times.” Gleeson said the success of this year, not just in the seniors and reserves, started when both sides fell short of grand finals last year. He said that spurred them on. “We were pretty disappointed after last year, we thought we had the side to get there. “We stumbled a couple of times out here and obviously with Simsy [Shaun Sims] not coaching us any more, it was all against us. “Lobby [Jamie Lobb] got us all together and got us back on track. “We always had belief.” Once the season started the Burras were always in the mix, but not spoken about as flag favourites.

Gleeson said they probably didn’t get the recognition they deserved. They lost four games during the regular season by a total of less than four goals. “We had flashes of brilliance, but a quarter cost us. “We played some pretty bad footy, but in every game we fought back into it and always had that belief and never gave up. “We thought we were inconsistent, as we thought we could have been doing better than we were.” Gleeson said the community would really enjoy not only the seniors’ premiership, but also the reserves premiership. “I don’t think we get the credit we deserve for keeping the group we’ve got together.” Tara Murray Tom Gleeson led from the front on Sunday. (Shawn Smits)

Burras leave their best til last By Tara Murray Diggers Rest peaked at the right time to claim its second Riddell District Football League premiership in three years. For much of the year, the Burras sat behind the ladder leaders, despite not being beaten by more than two goals. A third-placed finish gave them the perfect run-in to finals. But finals were anything but perfect – Diggers Rest had a big win, its worst performance of the season and a thriller, on its way to a grand final showdown against Riddell. The Burras started slow, but once they hit the front they stayed there. Riddell threw everything at the Burras early in the last quarter, before Mathew Medcraft and playing coach Jamie Lobb kicked the sealers. The Burras won 9.12 (66)-6.9 (45). Lobb said there had been a feeling all season that they could make it back to the grand final. He said having nearly a full squad was an added bonus. “We set ourselves,” he said. “Our whole training this season has been about playing here. “It’s nice when it pays off.” It took the Burras a quarter and half to get going. Their run coincided with the Bombers being a man down, with first James Nolan and then Dylan Tarczon sent from the field. While Nolan returned, Tarczon’s day was done just before half-time. “I got a little more confident when I knew he [Tarczon] wasn’t coming back on in the second half,” Lobb admitted. “I think we were working our way back into the game at this stage and it was a bonus for us. “It allowed us to put the margin on which was hard to get back. I don’t think we did make the most of it though.” After taking the margin out to a game high 25 points at three-quarter time, the Burras were expecting one last hurrah from the Bombers. Lobb said it showed real character from the boys to be able to respond. “Half way through the last quarter it could have gone either way,” he said. “We showed the last two weeks that we’ve dug deep when we’ve needed to and just found the way.” It wasn’t much of a surprise that Medcraft stood up late when needed. Lobb said Medcraft was one of the few players they had targeted during the off season. He said Medcraft, like all of their recruits, was able to play on big grounds such as Clarke Oval where the grand final was held. “His experience on this ground and knowing the finals would be here [was the main reason] and it’s paid off,” Lobb said. “He’s really good and he gets the boys up and 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 18, 2018

about. He took a little while to get going, but once he is going, he’s a hard person to stop.” Skipper Tom Gleeson was awarded the Doug McIntyre best on ground medal. Thomas Taylor was awarded the AFL Victoria Country Medal. Lobb, who kicked two goals, said everyone did their bit on the day, which is what got them across the line. The first year coach said the win didn’t feel too different to winning a premiership as a player. “I still feel more like a player than a coach,” he said. “It’ll probably sink in later on and I’ll go and enjoy it with the boys. “I’m just the player who gets to stand up there and talk to them at the breaks.” The senior premiership capped off a good day for the Burras footballers, with the reserves also claiming the premiership. Lobb said claiming two premierships was a reward to everyone who had put in the hard work across the club throughout the season. Caroline Springs fall at the last hurdle Caroline Springs proved no match for an experienced Footscray outfit in Hockey Victoria’s Metro A north west men’s grand final on Saturday. It was a big contrast between the two teams entering the match. The Springers were playing for their first men’s title, while Footscray was on track for a fourth straight title in this division. That experience showed through and Footscray won 3-1. Springers coach David Gorton said they were unable to take their chances to put pressure on Footscray. The Springers did not have an ideal lead-up to the game; one player was overseas and two players were in a car accident during the week. “They are a highly organised side and really mature group of players that have played

together for four or five years,” Gorton said of Footscray. “We knew we were up against it. “We play a fast game and the pitch at Essendon was a bit slower, which changed the game a little. “They were 2-0 up at half time after getting a couple of quick goals. “We missed a penalty that would have brought us back into the game. Other chances weren’t taken either.” Gorton said despite the result he was thrilled with how far they had come in the past 12 months. They finished eighth in pennant G in their first season. They stepped up several grades this season and their second men’s side also made finals. “This group has only just started to play together and only the last few rounds they’ve

been able to get the connections going. “It was one step too far this season though. “It’s been a sizeable growth and it gets tough in the later rounds when the big clubs bring everyone in. “If someone had asked me at the start of the season if you would make a grand final, I would have bit my hand.” Gorton said they already had more players interested in joining the club next season. He has previously said they hope to be promoted to the Vic League competitions next season and play against the top clubs. “A lot of people are standing up and starting to take notice.” For more pictures of the grand final, go to www.starweekly.com.au Tara Murray

Springers nail twin flags again By Tara Murray

Westside Strikers bow out Westside Strikers have fallen short of claiming the overall FFV state league 5 soccer title. Having been the runaway winners of the state league 5 west title, the Strikers faced north winners Heidelberg Eagles on Saturday for a spot in the state league 5 overall final. The Eagles did what only one other team had done this year – beat the Strikers. The 2-0 loss ends what has been a brilliant first senior season for the Strikers in which they claimed the west 5 title and earned promotion to state league 4 for next season. The Spring Hills women’s side has won the overall state league 3 title. Having won state league 3 north, the Stallions won their semi-final against Hume City the previous weekend. They were due to play the final on Sunday, but Harrisfield Hurricanes forfeited. Tara Murray

who stopped three shots during the shoot-out, was the star. But he also praised those who scored in the shoot-out. Having won four titles in two years, the question for the club is: What is next for the women’s side?

Shadbolt said the Springers had been given the option of moving up to Vic League 1 next season. He said they would discuss the possibility of making the move. “We don’t want to go too quickly,” he said. “We’ve doubled in size from last year and we’re looking at fielding another two senior sides.”

The Caroline Springs women’s hockey teams have made it two from two for a second straight year. Having had instant success in their first season, the Springers didn’t think they could go so well this time around. But their metro B west team claimed the title on Saturday and then the Vic League 2 team won its premiership on Sunday. They did it in a similar fashion, with both sides winning penalty shoot-outs. Springers women’s coach Ron Shadbolt said they didn’t expect to have the same success this season. “We’re setting a standard at the club,” he said. “We have a Vic League team that is quite different from last season. “We had a host of injuries. In our metro team, we had a lot of players in their first season. “We expected the metro team to play well, but the Vic League team performed extraordinarily well. “The girls played to the best of the their ability and were able to play some good hockey.” The Vic League 2 side defeated MHSOB in a penalty shoot-out for the second time in this finals series. Shadbolt said goalkeeper Jess Kelly was the star for the second time in a row. “We were outclassed for the first 40 minutes,” he said. “We had moments, but didn’t take the opportunities. The last 20 minutes, Jess was the difference. She held the team together.” Having kept her composure in the earlier penalty shoot-out with MHSOB, she needed to do it again. She did just that, with the Springers winning 1-0 after their third penalty shot hit the back of the net.
