Cheap chip opportunity
(Marco De Luca)
PETstock is holding its annual microchipping blitz for your furry friends. Charging a $10 flat-fee to microchip dogs, cats and other small animals, the aim of the blitz is to increase the number of microchipped pets. PETstock Microchip Blitz national project manager Christine Robertson said it could cost up to $80 to microchip pets. “Losing a pet is traumatic, however microchipping provides a level of protection and peace of mind that their beloved pet can be returned to them,” Ms Robertson said. “Once microchipped, pets can be tracked down online or through the local vet, however keeping your registration contact details updated is a must.” The discounted microchipping will be available at the Bacchus Marsh PETstock, 216 Main Street, and the Melton store at 77 High Street on October 20 and 21. Appointments are essential. For more information and to make an appointment, visit petstock.com.au ABBY AND LOUIE

$60m council office furore By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council’s decision to fast track a new $60 million civic centre will have negative impacts, according to community groups. The council last week dumped plans to refurbish the current High Street centre, which would have cost $20 million, instead agreeing to bring forward the construction of a new civic centre at Toolern in the next five years. Taylors Hill Community Safety Group president Ian Herbert said his group had requested council funding many times over the years but had been knocked back several times. “Common sense tells you, you take $60 million over five years out of the budget and something’s going to miss out,” Mr Herbert said. Friends of the Toolern Creek president Lyn
Holdsworth described the council’s ability to find $60 million to fund a civic centre and not community projects as “disappointing”. Ms Holdsworth said she had applied to the council on several occasions to help fund the “very successful” annual Platypus Festival now in its 11th year. She’s been knocked back each time. She said this year’s festival will be the last because of a lack of funding, “When you think about the few thousand dollars for a community-funded festival, it’s nothing to a budget like councils. “It’s very hard for community groups to get money. If council pitched in, I would’ve gone ahead with the festival again.” The decision to fast track the new civic centre split the council with Ken Hardy, Goran Kesic, Michelle Mendes, Sophie Ramsey and Bob
Turner voting in support. Councillors Steve Abboushi, Lara Carli, Melissa De Santis and Kathy Majdlik voted against the motion. Cr Majdlik said while she acknowledged a new civic centre needed to be built, it needed to be more central and accessible by residents from the eastern ward. “I really do not feel comfortable in bringing such a massive project 15 to 20 years forward and burdening our community with an extra $60 million in such a short time,” Cr Majdlik said. “To me it does not feel responsible.” But council officers said there were “clear advantages” in moving to Toolern earlier as opposed to the original plan of waiting 20 years, citing the area had been identified as a “major metropolitan activity centre” by the

state government. Cr Mendes described the conditions of the current civic centre on High Street as being an occupational health and safety issue, and said the staff deserved a new building. Council officers said building in Toolern and moving there earlier than anticipated would provide the greatest net-profit value. In a report presented at the council meeting, officers said the council could lease out 2000 square metres of the new building for the first few years, bringing in an estimated $600,000 annually. “Looking at the cash flow over the next 10 years, … move to Toolern now at $60 million will not have an impact on rates or current spending commitment as it will be funded by revenues from the Atherstone Lend Lease Joint Venture,” the report stated.

Crime rates at three-year low By Sumeyya Ilanbey Crime in Melton and Moorabool is the lowest it’s been in three years, according to the latest crime statistics. Overall crime in Melton dropped 3.3 per cent in the year to June (from 11,149 offences to 10,779), while in Moorabool the drop was far steeper at eight per cent for the same period (from 2512 offences to 2302). The Crime Statistics Agency data, published last week, has revealed crime across most areas has fallen, including family violence incidents
which decreased by more than five per cent in the 12 months to June. In Melton, there were 244 recorded family violence-related serious assaults and 181 non-family violence-related serious assaults. In Moorabool, the number of offences were 45 and 39, respectively. Residential aggravated burglaries in Melton decreased from 102 to 78, while residential non-aggravated burglaries fell from 857 to 772. Theft from motor vehicles continues to cause police a headache, with more than 1307 recorded offences – up from 1286.
‘‘
The Victorian victimisation rate is the lowest in five years
’’
- Fiona Dowsley Crime across the state has also fallen, dropping 5.6 per cent overall. Crime Statistics Agency chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said: “The Victorian victimisation rate is the lowest in five years, and the alleged offender figures
are the highest seen in Crime Statistics Agency data holdings, which go back to July, 2004.” The local government areas of Melbourne, Latrobe, Yarra, Mildura and Shepparton had the highest criminal incident rates in the state, despite a drop in crime in all five areas. Police Minister Lisa Neville said despite the significant drop in the state’s crime rates, there was still more work to do. “We back Victoria Police and we will continue to give them the resources, technology and the equipment they need to respond to and crack down on crime,” Ms Neville said.
Police patrols ramp up for grand weekend Westgate Highway Patrol has mapped out its game plan and will hit the west’s roads en masse over the grand final long weekend to tackle the top five causes of fatalities and serious injuries. Police from Westgate Highway Patrol, the uniform branch and state highway patrol will be out in force across our roads for Operation Scoreboard, which will run from this Thursday to Sunday in a bid to prevent road trauma. Westgate Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty Wallace said police would focus on speeding drivers, driver distraction, seatbelt non-compliance, fatigue and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Last year, nearly 300 speeding, seatbelt and other offences were detected on Wyndham roads over the grand final long weekend, including 88 speeding drivers, 80 drivers and passengers were caught without their seatbelts, 40 unregistered cars, 23 drivers caught using their mobile phone while behind the wheel and 17 unlicensed drivers. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings wants drivers to use common sense when behind the wheel. “Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles,” he said.

“We hardly get asked out anymore because where our friends choose to go aren’t appropriate. “I’ve constantly got to look after both girls to make sure they don’t have a seizure. I can’t go to take them to Christmas lights because of the flashing lights.” Ms McGrath wants to raise awareness about epilepsy and smash stereotypes that surround it. She says some people continue to wrongly think they need to put something in the mouth of a person having a seizure or that someone having seizures swallow their tongue.

Her younger sister, Brooke, 12, was diagnosed with epilepsy seven years ago, but instead of the chronic seizures, Brooke has absence seizures, meaning she loses consciousness and appears to stare into space for a few seconds. Belinda Fitzpatrick learnt a valuable lesson during a first aid training session: she could be the difference to saving her child’s life in an emergency. The Melton mother travelled to Broadmeadows earlier this year to attend a Tiny Hearts First Aid session, learning how to respond to a range of medical situations, including choking, burns and drowning. She said the 40-minute drive was “more than worth the journey”. “I think the most valuable thing I learnt was that I could be the difference to my child’s life,” Ms Fitzpatrick said. “Until the session, I think I would have thought twice about whether I could actually administer first aid that could save his life.”
The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network will give 1500 parents and caregivers the chance to attend the Tiny Hearts First Aid sessions in Melton and Sunshine for free. Sessions will be available in Mandarin. Network’s chief executive, Adjunct Associate Professor Christopher Carter, said giving parents the skills to help keep their children safe was vital. “An effective health system is not just about doctors or hospitals,” he said. “We can all play an active role in making our community a healthier and safer place to live.” To register for a free session, visit: www. tinyheartsfirstaid.com/northwestmelbourne

When a dog’s life saves By Sumeyya Ilanbey Less than two years ago, Joseph Bowden was in a very dark place. He had attempted suicide on several occasions and would “self-medicate” with two bottles of wine every night. The Australian Defence Force veteran left the army in 2014 after serving for 24 years in various roles and across the world. He was on suicide watch in the days leading up to his retirement, so was admitted to the Austin Health Psychological Trauma Recovery Service, staying for nine weeks. “I learned new strategies and how to cope,” Mr Bowden said. It was there that the Heidelberg man saw a poster for the Young Diggers program – headed in Victoria by Melton woman Carole Doyle – that would eventually lead to big changes. The program partners assistance dogs with veterans and first responders living with post-traumatic stress disorder. “I rang the number and applied to the program [in 2014], but didn’t hear anything for a year-and-a-half,” Mr Bowden says. “Out of the blue one day, Carole Doyle calls … and we went for a coffee at the main drag [in Melton]. “About three hours later she told me her life story and I told her mine. Four weeks later, she came with Djidi.” Djidi, a blue-heeler, was initially intended for another veteran, but when that didn’t work out, Ms Doyle asked Mr Bowden if he wanted to be partnered with her. “I said I’ll take her on a trial basis, and if it doesn’t work out it’s fine,” he said. “Three weeks later, Carole checked in with me and said, ‘How are you going?’ I said, ‘She’s mine and you’re not getting her back’. Djidi has given me confidence, taught me patience

and understanding again, which I thought I lost.” Ms Doyle says the program has saved the lives of many veterans who struggled with PTSD. During night terrors, the assistance dogs calm veterans down. “There is light at the end of the tunnel,” Ms Doyle said.
She’s looking for more volunteers, dog trainers and foster carers. The group recently rescued its first Melton dog – Digger, the bull arab. “He was really, really bad,” Ms Doyle said. “Skin and bones, had bite marks all over him, all over his head. He was really, really thin, but was really gentle when I went to see him.”

Refuge works set to begin Construction on Melton’s first youth refuge centre was marked with a sod-turning event on Friday. Four years in the making, construction on the Hope Street refuge centre – a crisis accommodation facility for young people and families experiencing homelessness – will start on Monday and finish by July next year. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said it had been a “major journey”, involving research programs, fundraising and community awareness events, political lobbying and negotiations to get to this stage. “I’m absolutely thrilled,” Ms Bennett said. “It’s fantastic to walk on site and see the start of the construction at this point. It’s inspiring, it’s hopeful and it’s more tangible. “It’s very humbling in terms of the community support we have had.” Once built, the youth refuge centre will have three buildings – an administration office; a two-bedroom flat for young families or siblings; and a dormitory-style building one with eight bedrooms for young people and one staff bedroom. More than 100 young people experiencing homelessness could be accommodated at the centre each year. The closest refuge centre is presently 30 kilometres away in Sunshine. Ms Bennett said one in Melton would keep young people connected to their communities. Sumeyya Ilanbey

No support for hospital By Sumeyya Ilanbey The state government and opposition have been accused of showing “little interest” in a campaign for a public hospital in Melton. More than 11,000 people signed postcards calling for the Labor and Liberal parties to commit to the hospital, with the signatures delivered to Parliament House on Wednesday afternoon. The delegation that headed to Spring Street, made up of Melton council officers, local GPs and the mayor, was intending to hand over the petitions to Health Minister Jill Hennessy. But the minister, nor any Labor and Liberal state MPs, were a no-show. Melton’s Liberal candidate Ryan Farrow and Labor candidate Justin Mammarella received the signatures on behalf of the government and opposition. Melton GP Marcus Watson said the MPs were “disenfranchised” with the Melton voters. “I think it’s amazing that we have such a strong community feeling and have so little interest from the powers that can actually deliver this,” Dr Watson said. “They don’t understand the urgency of the need in the west. “To not even come and talk and discuss – it surprises me and it’s quite disappointing, but we’ll keep trying.” Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said the community had backed the campaign and sent a loud and clear message to state politicians that a public hospital in Melton was desperately needed. “This [campaign] is all about the constancy and the scale of the community representation.” Mr Farrow said the opposition would be making a commitment about the public hospital soon, but would not reveal when or the details of the commitment.
Melton mayor Bob Turner on the steps of Parliament. (Supplied)
Mr Mammarella said he was picked to receive the petition for the state government because of his familiarity with the campaign. Dr Watson said he was frustrated by a lack of action and commitment from both sides. “We’ve got a Labor candidate who’s saying things like [he supports it] however, they’re in government – all they have to do is commit to build a hospital,” Dr Watson said.
“And we haven’t had the backing from the Liberals either – sure it’s OK for a Liberal candidate to say he backs it, but we need the backing to say if they got into the government they would build it. “It’s an election that’s going to be fought on local issues, and until they realise this is the absolute local, focal issue, then they’re going to miss out on votes in Melton.”

Call to review public transport State politicians are being urged to fix Melton’s “woefully inadequate” public transport, particularly bus routes. The Melton Transport Community Reference Group has started a petition calling on candidates to take public transport in the region seriously. “For too long, the residents of the City of Melton have been neglected,” the petition blurb states. “Our public transport is woefully inadequate. Most people live more than a 10-minute walk from a bus stop, and those who are lucky enough to live near a bus stop have a bus service that runs infrequently and connects poorly to other public transport services.” The group is calling for a solution that ensures 95 per cent of residents are within 400 metres of a public transport service that runs at least every 20 minutes; extending the bus routes to service new estates; linking routes from the municipality to surrounding areas such as Bacchus Marsh, Watergardens Town Centre and Werribee; and synchronising the bus and train timetables. The group says duplicating the rail tracks from Melton to Deer Park was the “perfect” opportunity to review the bus services to railway stations. “We deserve a level of public transport that many people in Melbourne take for granted,” the petition states. The petition is at timeforthewest.org. au/melton_petition. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Guy planning, population pledge By Sumeyya Ilanbey
Victoria’s award for volunteering Victoria Hirt has always gone out of her way to help others. She’s volunteered in poverty-stricken communities overseas, worked with younger girls on helping them improve their self-esteem, and regularly amplifies the voices of other students at her school. “I’ve been provided with a lot of opportunities from a young age through my family,” the 18-year-old says. “My dad is part of the CFA, so I’ve been involved in that and been able to witness a lot of volunteering.” Victoria, a year 12 student at Melton Christian College, received a VCE Leadership Excellence Award at an awards ceremony last Friday. The awards are given to VCE students who are actively involved in volunteering and leadership programs throughout their community. A strong proponent for female empowerment and education, Victoria has worked hard in Cambodia and in her local community. “I’ve been given the opportunity that a lot of other girls around the world haven’t,” the Eynesbury teenager says. Victoria hopes to study bachelors of international development and global studies at Australian Catholic University, and work overseas in programs targeting education, poverty and sanitation.

A Coalition state government has pledged to rein in housing approvals in booming Melbourne suburbs that are struggling with a lack of infrastructure, despite earlier pledging to fast-track 300,000 housing lots in growth corridors. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy last Thursday unveiled plans for a Population Commission that will “manage population levels”. Mr Guy told reporters that Melbourne had a defined urban growth boundary and what lay within it needed to be managed properly. “But we need to think about what comes next,” he said.“We’re not about pressing stop on Melbourne and nothing will ever happen again. “Planning restrictions on suburbs and towns will only be lifted once infrastructure and the numbers of police, doctors, teachers and healthcare workers reach specific levels.” He said the Population Commission would provide a long-term vision of how to grow Victoria and decentralise population. It would also identify gaps in services, he said. “Unplanned, unmanaged population growth is choking Melbourne and it’s leaving parts of country Victoria without the growth they desire,” he said. Earlier this year, Mr Guy promised a Coalition government would fast-track the rezoning of all Precinct Structure Plans – equivalent to about 300,000 extra housing lots – in Melton, Wyndham, Hume, Whittlesea, Mitchell, Casey and Cardinia, by June 30, 2020. He argued increasing land supply would drive down demand, making more houses affordable.

Melton Seniors Festival: October 2018
Mayor’s Message
Cr Bob Turner What an incredible start we’ve had to the Build Melton Hospital campaign! I’m so proud that, in only four weeks, more than 11,000 people have signed their support for this important proposal, either via the online petition or by completing a postcard.
to show your support at buildmeltonhospital.com.au Your action will back our call for an official commitment from the State Government, the Opposition and all candidates to Build Melton Hospital in the run up to the election.
Last week I was part of a delegation that delivered our signatures to Parliament House, sending a clear message to the decision makers at Spring Street that, no matter who is in government after the 24 November election, we expect them to invest in the west.
I would also like to congratulate all the teams across a range of sports who have played in a grand final recently, including Melton Football Club (senior) Caroline Springs Football Club (senior women’s), Caroline Springs Hockey (three senior teams), Melton Hockey Club (Men’s Metro B) and Diggers Rest Football Netball Club (reserves and seniors football, c grade netball).
It is unacceptable that residents can’t access high quality, 24-hour emergency and specialist medical care within our City and the overwhelming response to this campaign really highlights how strongly we feel about it. This campaign has only just started, so if you haven’t already signed I urge you
Melton City Council is inviting older residents in the community to join in the fun of the Seniors Festival and celebrate the best of living well and ageing well across the City of Melton. Cr Ken Hardy Our Build Melton Hospital campaign is off to a tremendous start with over 11,000 signatures already delivered to Parliament House. I would like to thank everyone who has shown their support so far. The need for a local, 24-hour hospital in our City is clear; the health of our rapidly growing community is a priority and we cannot continue to travel long distances and wait in long queues for emergency or specialist medical care. Building a public hospital in the City of Melton will improve health outcomes and quality of life, but it will also strengthen the local economy by creating jobs and promoting investment. During an anticipated four year construction period, it’s been estimated that 550 jobs will be created, with an additional 1600 indirectly linked jobs. Once operational, we estimate the hospital would employ up to 3000 people in skilled and unskilled
positions, plus another 2179 jobs in supplying and supporting the facility. We should also consider how a hospital will stimulate the growth of related industries, such as allied health clinics, training centres and specialist consulting rooms, and the knock-on benefits to existing local accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants and retail outlets. In fact, we estimate a new hospital will generate benefits worth an extra $1 billion a year to our local economy. That’s why we’re working so hard to advocate on behalf of our City. If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to show your support at buildmeltonhospital.com.au Feel free to contact me on 0437 226 887 or ken.hardy@melton.vic.gov.au

Schools vow to fight funding By Michael Koziol, The Age Some private school principals are forming a splinter group to fight the Morrison government’s looming “fix” to school funding, claiming some suburban and regional schools will lose up to $4 million a year. The cohort is led by Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s Andrew Neal, who has threatened to embark on a political campaign. A concerted campaign in key suburban and regional seats could pose an election threat to the Morrison government, which is poised to announce a major change to the way private schools’ wealth is assessed. For the first time, federal funding will be calculated partly on the actual income tax returns of the school’s parents, rather than the wealth of the surrounding district, as is the status quo. It is believed the reform has secured general support from Catholic and independent negotiators. But the details have been subject to strict confidentiality agreements, and many independent schools are frustrated with the closed-door talks. Mr Neal said schools had been “side-swiped” by the National School Resourcing Board. He said analysis of the secret data indicated his school stood to lose $3-$4 million a year under the new system – a “massive change” which would necessitate fee increases. “Schools are going to be put in severe stress,” Mr Neal told Fairfax Media. Mr Neal said he would target two dozen outer suburban and regional schools across
the country to form a new network to fight the changes. The Catholic sector has argued the current system short-changes its low-fee schools in wealthier areas. The Coalition – under both Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison – has sought a solution that will quieten the Catholic sector’s relentless campaign.
‘‘
Schools are going to be put in severe stress
’’
- Andrew Neal
But in doing so it has angered independent schools, particularly in regional and outer-suburban areas. Mr Neal indicated he was prepared to campaign as aggressively as his Catholic counterparts, who have voiced robocalls and sent letters to parents on the eve of federal byelections. Mr Neal also expressed frustration with how school principals had been kept in the dark. “We’re not expected to engage in the debate,” he said. “The material that is being released is being released selectively to stakeholders rather than individual schools.” In a diplomatic rebuke of Independent Schools Victoria, Mr Neal said it was “very hard” for the peak body to meet the needs of all its members. In response, ISV chief executive Michelle Green said the body had been involved in “intensive and detailed discussions” with Education Minister Dan Tehan.

Road Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Scoreboard 2018 Operation Scoreboard (AFL Grand Final long weekend from Thursday 27th September to Sunday 30th September 2018) is identified as a period of potentially high risk to the Victorian community in terms of exposure to road trauma. Westgate Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty Wallace said the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 28th September 2018 provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments and it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (Alcohol and/or Drug) Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well rested. Speed Cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.
Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Grand Final Holiday weekend. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the 2018 Operation Scoreboard Campaign for the AFL Grand Final Holiday long weekend would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000 Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.

A champion campaign Do you know an outstanding woman doing wonders in the sporting community? Djerriwarrh Health Services is calling for nominations for women who have made a significant contribution to sport in a paid or unpaid capacity, as part of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. DJHS will champion the campaign by recognising local women and highlighting the diverse achievements of females in sporting communities. Its chief executive Belinda Scott said this was an opportunity to recognise and celebrate Melton women’s achievements.
“Women and girls are breaking through numerous barriers that previously held them back both on and off the sporting field,” Ms Scott said. “Their achievements provide hope and leadership for girls and women in the region, in not only sporting clubs but all areas of our community.” Submissions close October 1. Award winners will be announced at a dinner on December 11. For details or to receive a copy of the nomination form, contact healthpromotion@djhs.org.au. Sumeyya Ilanbey

In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool. 2

floorboards, and carpeted family and rumpus areas. A glass-baluster spotted gum staircase rises to another living room. A full-height glass wall at head of stairs, allowing views to below, is a great architectural flourish but also acts as a light magnet. Tick. Also upstairs are a guest bedroom with walk-in robe and plantation shutters as in all bedrooms and others; a shower room; and, behind double doors, a study. And there’s more: a sound-proof theatre room, with atmospheric blue wall paint, cinema-style carpet, seating platforms and all equipment. BYO popcorn and wine.
Of the three fitted bedrooms downstairs, the large and classy main, with rich blue wall paint and white trims, has a walk-in robe and sleek dual-basin en suite with freestanding spa and enclosed toilet. The big kitchen is glam and practical in equal measure: stone benches, uncountable pot drawers, a walk-in pantry and the full suite of Miele appliances. It also has a servery window to the fully enclosable alfresco room. This terrific space, cleverly designed with all-season comfort in mind, effectively brings the count of living areas to six – and with kids of all ages on board, that can prove priceless. Other undeniable attractions include hydronic heating, refrigerated cooling, ducted vacuum, security system, a drive-through double garage (internal access) and watering system for completed landscaping. Burton’s big year rewarded By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh’s Daniel Burton thought his chances of winning the Ballarat Football League’s Henderson Medal were over midway through the count last Monday. One of the pre-count favourites for the league’s top award, Burton didn’t poll many votes early on. Admitting he’s one who’s not afraid to say something to the umpires, Burton thought his chances were over. “There was one game where I thought it was my best game ever that I had played, but I didn’t poll,â€? he said. “It was in the middle of the year. I’ve won best on ground medals in grand finals, but I thought this game was better. “I thought it was going to be embarrassing when I didn’t finish in the top 10 when everyone is talking me up.â€? The ruckman though polled well in the back half of the count to get himself back into contention. With two rounds remaining he was one vote behind former teammate, Melton’s Matt Denham. Burton polled three votes in the second last round to take the lead by two votes. In the final round, Bacchus Marsh and Melton played each other. It was then when Burton thought he may have done enough. “I remember in that game giving a bit of crap to Matt, about him not getting a kick and I thought I had a relatively good game. “If I had have lost to Matty Denham, I
wouldn’t have cared as much. Burton polled three votes in the final round to finish on 22 votes, five clear of Denham. In his third season with the Cobras, Burton said being fit made a major difference. “Hopefully I’ve repaid some of the faith the club has put in me, he said. “It makes a big difference to have two good knees and being able to move around. “Last year I didn’t train much and I need to train to stay fit. “I’m just happy and got my enjoyment back with footy and happy to be running around again. Burton is just the second Cobra player to win the Henderson Medal, joining Wayne Cracknell who won the medal in 1997. He joked that now he has won the award too, he deserves a plaque over the bar at Maddingley Park like Cracknell. The Henderson Medal capped off a big night for Burton who also won the Ballarat Courier player of the year award. He was the runaway winner in the Ballarat Courier award, winning by 11 votes. Burton was also named in the team of the year, along with Cobras teammates Jake Owen, Aaron Willits and Ben Speight. Melton coach Aaron Tymms was named coach of the year, while Braedan Kight, Denham and Ben Archard are named in the team of the year. Darley’s Shane Page, Darren Leonard, Steven Kennedy and Brian Graham were also named in the team. In the netball, Bacchus Marsh coach Michael Saker was named coach of the year.
Bacchus Marsh’s Daniel Burton, right, is the Ballarat Football League’s best player. (Damian Visentini)

Grand despair, but future bright
The Bloods’ Blake Souter, above, breaks a pack. Below, Mark Orr takes a strong grab and East Point players celebrate. (Pictures: Shawn Smits)
Bloods blow their chance By Tara Murray Melton’s third quarter of the Ballarat Football League grand final will haunt the side for a while to come. Take out that quarter, and the Bloods would now be celebrating their first senior premiership since 2005. Instead, they’re trying to forget 30 minutes of football that allowed East Point to kick nine goals to three and take the grand final from their grasp. As much as the Bloods tried, they couldn’t regain the lead in the last quarter. They got within a goal with six seconds to go, but it wasn’t to be. East Point won 15.7 (97)-14.11 (95), its first premiership since 2001 when East Ballarat and Golden Point merged. It was a shattered Bloods coach Aaron Tymms in the rooms after the game. He took responsibility for the third quarter, saying he was out-coached. “We lost our way a little bit and they smashed us out of the midfield,” he said. “We were negative seven or nine [centre clearances] for the quarter. “They had multiple inside 50 entries and there was some undisciplined stuff from us when they kicked a goal after they had already kicked a goal. “It’s not the reason we lost. I’m lost for words.” At half-time Tymms was a happy man, with the Bloods leading by 22 points, having had double the amount of scoring shots. He said they had played to the game plan and it had worked well. But East Point, which finished on top of the ladder, changed its game plan in the second half. “They denied us the football,” Tymms said. “We thought we were really strong on the ground balls and they sort of came out and were more ferocious and it got them in front.” The Bloods got the last two goals of the third quarter, reducing the margin to 15 points to
give them some hope. But it was always going to be tough being two men down. Ben Archard, who entered the game with an ankle concern, had a heavily strapped knee, while Ryan Davis’ day was also over. The Bloods needed to get multiple goals to put the pressure back on, but it didn’t come until it was too late. Tymms said they knew how long was left on the clock when they kicked their last goal to bring the margin back to within a goal. “We couldn’t get those two in a row,” Tymms said. “We were out-marked all over the ground and we were down two, with Davis and Archard off for the whole last quarter and that didn’t help the rotations. “Mark Orr and Brett McIntyre had to be played out of position, so it threw a curve ball. “Full credit to East Point.” Tymms said it was a pretty even effort with
Jaycob Hickey and Ryan Carter two of the better players. Braedan Kight and Connor Griffiths kicked two goals each for the Bloods. East Point’s Paul Kodorenko won the Roy Edwards Memorial Trophy for best on ground, while Matt Johnston won the AFL Victoria Country Medal. Tymms said he had mixed views of how to see the season. “Had you said at the start of the year that we would have played in the grand final we would have been happy,” he said. “Winning nine games in a row [coming into the grand final] it doesn’t seem right that we didn’t win the premiership. “Going into the game, I thought we were in better form, but it doesn’t matter on the day.” Tymms, who signed a two year contract when he signed on late last year, said they were in a good place to go a step further next year. “Pretty much everyone has re-signed. We’ll be back bigger and better.”
Melton president Greg Davis couldn’t be any prouder of the season his side has produced in the Ballarat Football League this year. This time last year, the Bloods had finished ninth and making finals – let alone a grand final – was a dream. The Bloods lost to East Point, 15.7 (97)-14.11 (95) at the weekend. But despite grand final disappointment, Davis said they had done the club proud. “It was a great effort,” Davis said. “They had more scoring shots and in the end the third quarter cost them. “I’m very proud of them all.” It’s been a long time between grand finals for the Bloods. Before the weekend, the Bloods 2005 premiership was the last time a senior men’s team in the Melton township had played in a grand final. Davis said the community support they had received showed how much it meant to the town. “We’ve been going around for 139 years and we are actually really proud of our town,” he said. “We get a bad rap for our town at times, but you could see by the amount of people here with the maroon on, a lot of people from our town were here.” The one thing that stands out about the Melton team is the home-grown talent. Of those in the grand final, 21 of the 22 played junior football and are rated one point players in the player points rankings. The only player who didn’t play juniors at the club is vice-captain Ben Archard. Davis said there’s not many clubs in the state that could say they have that sort of home-grown talent in their senior sides. “I don’t think there is any other club that has done that, usually they have 15-16 and import five or six. “For us to do that with 21 and just to be beaten by two points is remarkable. It’s not about the money, as we’re not a very rich club. It’s the culture. “We’ve got four Walkers in the side, three brothers and a cousin, there’s the Hickeys, we’ve got the Carters and the Kights. “We’ve got father and sons who played in a premiership and now the son is in the grand final.” With 27 out of their top 30 players having already re-signed for next season, Davis said there’s greater things still to come. Their under-17 (previously under-16 team) has won three straight premierships, with a group of those players to come through into the senior ranks next year. Panthers roll on for a grand end to a winning season
Melton South’s winning E-grade team.
Melton South claimed its first Ballarat Netball League premiership when the Panthers E-grade side took home the silverware on Saturday. Playing in the league’s newest competition, the Panthers were the team to beat all season, losing just one game. On Saturday, they were pushed all the way by Ballarat, which finished the regular season in third spot. The Panthers led at every break, but every time they looked to start to go away with the game, the Swans responded. The margin was two goals at quarter-time and in the end it was the final margin and the Panthers won, 27-25. Panthers coach Alan Watson said his side earned the win. “They thoroughly deserved to be in the grand final, and the pressure that Ballarat put on was
fantastic … it went down to the wire and it was just a matter of a couple of turnovers here and there,” he said. “We were able to absorb the pressure and thoroughly deserved to win the grand final.” Watson said the key was keeping the pressure on every time the Swans looked like they might get a run on. “Credit to the girls, they got turnovers at crucial times, that impacted the game and scoreboard. “At the end of the day, the better team won.” Ann Ward and Georgia Blyth shared the goals around with 14 and 13 respectively for the Panthers. Panthers Brittney Lenon was named best on court. Watson said the side was unable to train due to work commitments.
He said when given the option to put in an E-grade team they decided they had the numbers and they would be silly not to. “They just turn up and play and had a fantastic attitude all year. They just wanted to be out there and have fun and they got reward for the hard work they’ve put in.” Watson said the result was reward for the whole club. It was the first time the club had a netball team in a senior grand final, let alone win a premiership. “I’m very pleased for the girls,” he said. “I’m sure they’ll celebrate long and hard.” In the other netball finals, North Ballarat City won the A-grade, Lake Wendouree won the B-grade, D-grade and under-19s, while the Sunbury Lions won the C-grade grand final. Tara Murray
Third time lucky for Cobras By Tara Murray After missing out in 2014 and 2017, Bacchus Marsh has claimed the Ballarat Football League reserves premiership. With most of the playing group part of the past two grand final losses, the Cobras were determined to make it third time lucky on Saturday against East Point. The Kangaroos entered the grand final on the back of an undefeated regular season. The Cobras were made to work hard for their grand final spot, defeating the Sunbury Lions by seven points in the preliminary final. Despite going in as underdogs, the Cobras looked to be the better side early on. They kicked the only three goals of the first quarter and had four on the board by the time the Kangaroos kicked their first goal 10 minutes into the second quarter. The Cobras extended the margin to 23 points at half-time. The Kangaroos kept coming and worked the margin back to within a goal in the third quarter, but the Cobras settled and maintained their half-time lead. The fourth quarter was more of the same, with East Point attacking early, before the Cobras responded. The Cobras went on to win 12.6 (78)-9.9 (63). Cobras coach Rick Millar said they had to change up how they played to turn the game on East Point. “It was great by the boys … they put a lot of hard work in to get to where we are. “They [East Point] are a high-scoring side, so we had to take them somewhere they hadn’t been before and it worked for us. “We probably had a couple of good breaks with their injuries, but ultimately our boys were great and deserved to win.” With the Kangaroos known for their speed

and fast finishes, Millar said there was a few late nerves. “They were always going to be there, but the boys stuck in and got the job done.” Jack Powell, Dylan Prozzo and Rhys McNay kicked two goals each for the Cobras. McNay was awarded the best on ground medal.

Millar said it was exciting to get the title after missing out on two grand finals. “We missed out in 2014 and 2017, it’s been a fairly long journey. “It’s remarkably pleasing to get the win,” he said. It was a big week for the Cobras’ reserves

Caroline Springs did not come away with premiership glory in the Western Region Football League division 1 reserves grand final. The Lakers trailed all day against Altona but were in the game until three-quarter time. A five-goal-to-one final quarter sealed the premiership for Altona, which won 11.8 (74)-6.9 (45). Daniel Backus was named the Lakers best in the loss. Backus and Jy Lambley kicked two goals each for the Lakers. Honda Civic is back to its best By Alistair Kennedy
AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE
The arrival of the 10th generation Civic in mid-2016 sparked a significant revival, with sales more than doubling in 2017, albeit from a relatively low base. The new Civic hatchback is always the biggest seller in Australia. Our test here is of the topline sedan. Honda Civic comes in six variants, VTi, VTi-S, VTi-L, RS, VTi-LX and the high-performance Type-R. All are available as either a sedan or hatch with the exception of the Type-R which is hatch-only.
Civic VTi 1.8-litre petrol sedan or hatch: $22,390 (CVT) Civic VTi-S 1.8-litre petrol sedan or hatch: $24,490 (CVT) Civic VTi-L 1.5-litre turbo-petrol sedan or hatch: $27,790 (CVT) Civic RS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol sedan or hatch: $31,790 (CVT) Civic VTi-LX 1.5-litre turbo-petrol sedan or hatch: $33,590 (CVT) Type-R 2.0-litre hatch: $50,990 (six-speed manual)
Styling
Both sedan and hatch have the coupe-like profile that’s clearly aimed at attracting younger and less conservative older buyers to the Honda brand. The Honda family grille is flanked by narrow headlight clusters that sit above large honeycombed air intakes. The entry-level Civic VTi sits on 16-inch steel wheels, all others step up to alloys, 16-inch in the VTi-S, 17s in the others.
Engines / transmissions
Civic VT-i and VTi-S are powered by the well-established naturally-aspirated 1.8-litre in-line four turning out 104 kW and 174 Nm. The Civic VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX get an all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged twin-cam, direct-injected, four-cylinder with variable valve timing. It produces 127 kW of power and peak torque of 220 Nm between 1700 and 5500rpm. There is no manual gearbox, with all models getting a CVT in place of the previous conventional five-speed automatic.
Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Honda dealer for drive-away prices.
Honda Civic has a bold and sleek look that will appeal to young buyers. (Supplied)
Infotainment The dashboard display is a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen in all models but without any physical buttons for the more commonly-used functions such as audio and air-conditioning. This can lead to a potential increase in driver inattention. Apple CarPlay comes with Siri Eyes Free mode and Android Auto with Google Voice for hands-free operations. The standard 180-Watt audio system has eight speakers, while the RS and VTi-LX feature a 542-Watt premium audio with 12 speakers.
Safety
In addition to common features (airbags, enhanced brakes and stability/traction control), all Civics get a multi-angle reversing camera; emergency stop signal; low tyre pressure warning and hill start assist.
Driving
Our test car was the top-of-the-range Honda VTi-LX sedan which, with its raft of safety equipment at an affordable price, is likely to be the preferred choice for family buyers.
The dashboard is logically designed with a tachometer and digital speedometer directly in front of the driver and a large infotainment touchscreen in the centre of the dash. The new 1.5-litre turbocharged engine pulls strongly with little effort. The quiet engine and underbody streamlining contribute to one of the quietest small cars that we’ve driven. Fuel consumption is officially listed at 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres on combined city/ highway. We averaged 7.4 L/100 km during our week behind the wheel.
Summing up
Honda Civic looks great and has refinement that compares favourably with some larger, more expensive, cars. There’s also a road presence that’s been lacking in recent Civics. We have no doubt it could cope with a long interstate trip.
