Wild night in the marsh Every year, BADGAR Wildlife Rescue helps nurse hundreds of Australian wildlife critters back to good health. But the Greendale-based shelter needs your help, says volunteer Melissa Coon. “This is our busy time of the year, because in spring we get lots of baby birds,” Ms Coon says. “But then again during winter, we can have a full shelter. Help is very much needed.” The annual Marsh Monster Mash, a fundraiser for BADGAR Wildlife Rescue will return this year. It will be run from 1pm in Saturday, October 27, at Village Green, 197 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. The community is being invited to dress up in costumes for the event, which will raise funds for the wildlife shelter. There will be food stalls, face-painting, jumping castles and plenty of spooky fun. For more information, visit Marsh Monster Mash on Facebook. Ashlie keeps a close eye on Zambuca, the wallaby joey. Pokies crackdown urged By Sumeyya Ilanbey The head of the Alliance for Gambling Reform has urged Melton council to knock back a pokies lease for Essendon Football Club. Negotiations with the Bombers to extend their lease at the Melton Country Club – on council-owned land – stalled earlier this year when councillors declined to make a decision and asked for a report on the possibility of selling the property. Essendon wanted to secure a four-year extension on the lease, which expires in
February 2022, with the option of extending it for five years over five periods (in total 29 years). Alliance director Tim Costello called on Melton councillors to vote the lease down. “If Essendon won’t back off, then the Melton councillors should intervene and vote the pokies lease down when it comes to council,” he said. “As an Essendon supporter, I am deeply disappointed the [football club] board … is seeking to stay long term in the pokies industry rather than divesting like
Collingwood and Melbourne have done.” Melton council currently collects $287,000 annually from the lease of the Melton Country Club. If the lease with the Bombers is extended, it’s expected to bring in almost $300,000 in rental yield annually. Melton recorded losses of more than $61 million in gaming in the past financial year, $5.6 million was lost at Melton Country Club’s 90 gaming machines in that time – double the losses from the previous year. Melton council is calling for public submissions on its notice of intention to
extend the lease with Essendon by 5pm, October 24. Melton council legal and governance manager Christine Denyer said anyone who wanted to make a submission should contact the council. “A decision will be taken after, and in consideration of, any and all submissions made,” Ms Denyer said. Earlier this year, Collingwood Football Club left the pokies industry when it sold its Caroline Springs and Ringwood venues. Essendon has been contacted for comment.

Buyers snap up latest land release in Weir Views There aren’t many suburbs where you can snare a piece of Melbourne land for $155,000. But you can get your hands on a 231 square metre block in Weir Views, near Melton West, for just that. EIG Developments is transforming 57 hectares of land in the newly-minted Opalia estate, in Weir Views, into an affordable housing hub. Over the September 22-23 weekend, 31 housing lots ranging in size from 231 square metres to 670 square metres, and priced from
$155,000 to $420,000, were released to the public. Opalia Estate manager Shivi Modgil told Star Weekly that 250 people turned out for the land release. Thirty buyers paid a deposit on the day. “To be honest, the buyers were a mix of [all demographics],” Mr Modgil said. “A lot of first home buyers, residents from the area … investors.” The estate will eventually include a $45 million shopping precinct, sports grounds, and land has been earmarked for primary

and secondary schools, according to Mr Modgil. The shopping centre will feature major supermarkets and retailers, including Woolworths, Aldi, Chemist Warehouse and McDonalds. The estate will eventually comprise 586
houses, the next land release is expected to be in the next six weeks. “We will have price increases as we start selling more and more,” Mr Modgil said. “The first couple of releases we wanted to try and make it as affordable as possible. “We are hoping we can have prices around the same, but we can’t say for sure.” For more information, visit www.opalia. com.au or call Mr Modgil on 0432 695 588. By Sumeyya Ilanbey For more than a decade, Kerrie Forber couldn’t enjoy the outdoors. A stroke when she was 28-years-old left her paralysed on the left side of her body, which affected her mobility and dexterity. After years of research and saving, the Braybrook woman bought a trike five years ago and had it custom-fit – it was her ticket back to independence. However, on July 30, she was grounded again when the $5000 trike was stolen for a second
time from the underground carpark of her apartment. There had also been two other attempts to steal it. “It was like looking for a needle in a haystack,” Ms Forber said. “Where do you start to look?” Ms Forber said she was “totally reliant” on the public’s goodwill to recover the trike. She reached out to the online world, posting about the trike on Bike Vault. Her post was shared almost 2000 times, and the trike was eventually found five weeks later at a second-hand store in Melton. “It’s hard to know why it was shared so
many times, but I’m guessing because it’s a customised trike for someone with a disability – that would’ve touched a chord with a lot of people. “Not being able to ride made me miss it too much. “The trike enables me, obviously, to get out and participate. “I used to ride a lot prior to my stroke and what I’ve missed the most since the stroke is the ability to get out and enjoy the outdoors.” Ms Forber is back on the road again after recently being reunited with her trike.

Melton council has received $5 million in state government funding for seven projects across the municipality. The projects funded by the Growing Suburbs Fund include: • $2 million for stage one of the Eynesbury Recreation Reserve; • $1 million for the Caroline Springs town centre sports precinct community pavilion; • $265,000 for the Morton Homestead playspace; • $405,000 for the Bloomsbury Drive playspace; • $440,00 for the Marlo Drive Reserve; • $400,000 for the Stan Payne Reserve; and • $355,000 for the Arbour Boulevard Reserve. Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz was at a sod-turning event last Thursday for the start of stage one of the MacPherson Park redevelopment, which was funded as part of the 2017-18 Growing Suburbs Fund. She said works on stage one of the projects at Hannah Watts Park, Bill Cahill Reserve and Arnolds Creek Recreation Reserve, which all received funding last year, were under way and due for completion next year. Ms Kairouz said Melton council had previously received $19 million over the past three years for 17 community projects. “The Growing Suburbs Fund is building the infrastructure that growing communities like Melton need,” Ms Kairouz said. “Melbourne’s outer suburbs are growing fast, that’s why we’re investing in local projects that local residents will benefit from for years to come.”

As a result, a “large” number of friends and family donated more than $9000 to the woman. The 26-year-old was charged last week with one count of obtaining property by deception, and has been bailed to appear at Sunshine Magistrate’s Court on March 12, 2019. Honouring local history The stories of Ballan’s World War I veterans will be highlighted during History Week celebrations. The Ballan Shire Historical Society will be opening the doors to the Ballan Courthouse on October 13 for the community to learn about the personal and service stories of the 810 Ballan service men and women who served in WWI. Society secretary Richard Biden said there would be photographs, artwork and books on display. “Most people are fairly appreciative of the trouble we’ve gone to [to collate this
information] and quite a lot of them would have had family members in World War I so they’d be interested in finding more information,” Mr Biden said. A personal favourite for Mr Biden is the story of the ‘Ballan Boys’ – five young men who went to Ballarat to sign up for the war. “They all had consecutive service numbers … and they were all at Gallipoli,” Mr Biden said. The courthouse, 45-47 Steiglitz Street, Ballan, will be opened to the public from 10am-3pm on Saturday, October 13. Details: 5368 2544. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Desperate days for Darley bub By Sumeyya Ilanbey Not particularly worried, but unable to get rid of a niggling feeling, Alyson Myers drives herself to Bacchus Marsh hospital hoping for assurance everything is OK. She’s only 24 weeks and six days pregnant – surely her baby can’t be arriving? She wonders if it is even possible for babies born so early to survive. “It was Labour Day, ironically, and the [hospital] staff told me I was already two centimetres dilated,” she recalls. She’s given drugs to stop the labour and steroids to speed up the development of her baby’s lungs before being rushed into a waiting ambulance and – with lights and sirens on – taken to Mercy Hospital in Heidelberg. By the time Ms Myers is finished the 70-kilometre trip to hospital, she is six centimetres dilated and in active labour. At that stage, she is without her husband, Luke, by her side. He is interstate. “I managed to get hold of Luke – he is still six hours away, so it was just me,” Ms Myers says. “Both of us had never been so scared.” Luke made it to the hospital just before Ms Myers’ waters broke. But the Darley woman started haemorrhaging and was rushed into an operating theatre for an emergency caesarean. After the room is filled with 40 people, baby boy Mason is born on March 12 weighing just 791 grams. Unable to hold him for the first 10 days, or take him home for 87 days, the Myers became well versed in health jargon.
And the journey from Darley to Heidelberg became a hard slog. “While we were in hospital, it was honestly our worst nightmare,” Ms Myers says. “It’s like being on a rollercoaster but dragged by your hair at the back of it. “You’re watching your baby fight to live. Mason got a really deadly infection when he was three weeks old … and we couldn’t look more than an hour ahead. We weren’t sure he was going to make it.”
‘‘
We weren’t sure he was going to make it
’’
- Alyson Myers
Mason was discharged in June, but his mum says bringing him home was nothing like she’d expected. They’ve had ongoing medical appointments and Mason has been using breathing support during overnight sleeps. “We are so grateful for every little thing, and to hear him cry in the middle of the night is a blessing, because we can get up to him,” Ms Myers says. “Previously, we could hear him crying but it was over the phone – we were so useless and other people were caring for our baby.” The Myers will take part in Walk for Prems on Sunday, October 28, to support Life’s Little Treasures Foundation. For more information about the fundraiser, or to donate, visit walkforprems.org.au.

Minister ‘too busy’ for meeting By Sumeyya Ilanbey Health Minister Jill Hennessy has avoided meeting the Melton community about the “urgent” need for a public hospital in the municipality for seven months. The Melton Hospital Group committee and Melton council say they’ve attempted to meet the health minister on several occasions, stretching back to February, but have been told “she’s too busy”. More than 13,000 people have signed a petition calling on the state government to build a public hospital in Melton since the campaign was launched five weeks ago.
Committee member, and neuropathology manager at the University of Melbourne’s Florey Institute, Dr Ian Birchall said the group was disappointed by the state government’s lack of “logical forward-thinking” and acknowledgement for this “vital” project. “Although the need for hospital infrastructure in Melton is undeniable, the minister’s office has not acknowledged our visit or the hospital proposal in any way,” Dr Birchall said. “Disappointingly, the wishes of over 13,000 residents don’t appear to count for much at all and to date the minister’s office has not communicated with the Melton Hospital
Group and has not offered any excuses apart from ‘the minister is too busy’. “Maybe the only way to get some attention is to make Melton a marginal seat in the upcoming election.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council was disappointed the health minister could not find the time to discuss this “urgent health issue” with the Melton community. “We hope Minister Hennessy might reconsider, and provide us the opportunity to advise why this community is in desperate need of a hospital in Melton,” Cr Turner said. When Star Weekly asked Ms Hennessy’s office why the health minister had avoided
a meeting, a spokesman said the Labor government had invested record funding in hospitals and health services across the state. “Locals have put their views forward loud and clear and we’ve listened to every word,” he said. “The minister and her colleagues regularly meet with community members, healthcare groups and other organisations – and we work side-by-side with them to deliver the best health care for locals.” Star Weekly asked the spokesman when the health minister met with members of the Melton community, but didn’t receive a response by deadline.
Dedication is the target Neil Stewart saw an advertisement for the Melton Pistol Club at a shopfront more than three decades ago. He decided to give it a go and sign up, and hasn’t left since. Mr Stewart credits his long-time stay with the club to the friendships he’s created along the way. “I love it,” he says. “And what I love the most is probably the friends I’ve made there.” For the past few years, Mr Stewart has helped run the Australian National Pistol Championships. The nine-day competition will next year be held at the Yarra Pistol Club in Lysterfield. “I decided long ago administration work [for the championships] was the best for me,” Mr Stewart says. “And it’s something I’m good at.” When asked what stereotypes he wanted to
smash about pistol shooting, Mr Stewart said: “It’s a sport – we’re not Rambos. It really is a disciplined sport. People think it looks easy, but it’s hard work. If you want to succeed, you’ve got to be dedicated.” Mr Stewart applied to the state government’s Athlete Pathway Travel Grant Program to assist with costs associated with next year’s championship. He received $750 to cover his motel costs. Applications for round two of the travel program open January 29 and close March 5. Honouring life
There was a time when Brooke Evans would become exhausted by walking from her car to the living room. Despite multiple trips to the doctor, the Wyndham Vale resident was told she had asthma or lacked vitamins. It was not until Mrs Evans gave birth to her son Xander that she was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary hypertension, a lung disorder characterised by high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. She was given a “cocktail” of medications, but they did not work, and she was placed on the waiting list for a double lung transplant. In January this year, Mrs Evans, 38, underwent a transplant at The Alfred Hospital. After the operation, she was placed into an induced coma. Mrs Evans’ mother, Dawn Thomas, said a few days after the operation, on a Monday, it was “a beautiful moment” when she saw her daughter take her first steps since the surgery, alongside Xander, now six. Mrs Evans said the organ transplant had changed her life. “It’s definitely given me a new lease on life, even on the Monday I got up and felt I could walk further than I could previously,” she said. Mrs Evans is now planning to attend the Australian Transplant Games, from September 30-October 6, to compete in darts. She will travel to the Gold Coast for the games with her husband Adrian and Xander. Mrs Evans said before she was diagnosed, darts had been the only exercise she was able to do, and she played twice a week with the Melton Darts Club. Humble hero farewelled Margaret Clare Barrie was a dedicated educator, loving grandmother and a selfless woman who gave her all to the community. She died on August 8, surrounded by family. At her funeral, the 94-year-old was remembered as “truly amazing and dedicated”. In a eulogy read by her children, Sue Hocking, Hamish Hocking and Jenny Barrie she was described as “an inspirational teacher”. “Other staff members acknowledged her dedication and friendship. Mum was always very humble when meeting past pupils, and loved hearing of their achievements.” Margaret was named a Melton Citizen of the Year and received an Order of Australia
Medal for her tireless work in the community, particularly in helping young people. “One thing she never gave up on was her knitting – she always had to have something on the go,” the eulogy stated. “Once the boys grew past knitted jumpers, mum went on knitting beanies and then trauma bears for the Red Cross. Roughly 150 bears have made their way to cheer up the lives of less fortunate children. “Even the last few days with her family sitting beside her, her strength and determination held on right to the end. What a wonderful fulfilling life for an amazing woman.”

Council calls for funding blitz By Sumeyya Ilanbey A rapidly increasing population and traffic woes have the “potential to bring Bacchus Marsh to a halt within five years,” according to Moorabool council. It has called for a serious investment in roads, sports and employment infrastructure in its wish list ahead of this year’s state election. Mayor Paul Tatchell said the growth of the shire, particularly Bacchus Marsh, is being “hampered” because of a lack of state government investment.
A Central Highlands Regional Growth Plan has identified Bacchus Marsh as a regional centre with potential for growth. “We, as a council, are determined to see that potential realised but to do so we need state and federal governments to come on board,” Cr Tatchell said. “We need both tiers of government to deliver a fair share of revenue to Moorabool.” The “constant” traffic congestion in and around Bacchus Marsh is putting drivers and pedestrians at increased safety risk, Cr Tatchell said.
An interchange at Holts Lane from the Western Freeway; upgrades to the Gisborne Road-Grant Street corridor; and redevelopments of the intersections at Main and Grant streets, Labilliere and Grant streets, and Griffith and Grant streets, have been identified as priority projects. Moorabool council has also called on the state government to invest in sports facilities, arguing active and healthy lifestyles were being “hampered” as a result of the “ever-increasing squeeze” on sporting facilities in the shire. Plans have been drawn up for a 30-hectare
sports hub, which will include equestrian facilities, soccer pitches and cricket ovals, at the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Reserve. Expected to cost $20 million, Moorabool council says construction could start immediately if the state and federal governments pitched in funds. “We need the state and federal governments to come on board and support our shire which is growing faster than the national and Victorian average,” Cr Tatchell said. The council has also asked the state to commit to funding the installation of gas infrastructure at the Parwan Employment Precinct.
Friendly homes rise up Three disability-friendly houses are being built in Melton West to enable young people with disabilities to live independently. The project is being delivered by disability services provider Empowered Liveability. Empowered Liveability co-director Nicole Doherty said all three houses were fitted out to accommodate people with physical disabilities. There are hoists in all of the bedrooms and bathrooms, wide doorways, lowered kitchens and wheelchair accessible showers and toilets. “We’ve done quite a lot of research into the areas we think needed these homes,” Ms Doherty said. “Research by organisations identified the Melton, Bacchus Marsh area has high levels of people with disability.” The tenants can choose housemates with similar interests, ages and backgrounds, Ms Doherty said. And there will be round-the-clock support.

TON

Construction on the houses is expected to finish by next month. “Most people we spoke with didn’t want to live alone,” Ms Doherty said. “They spoke about wanting to move out [of the family home], but not go into residential care. “There aren’t any ramps, it’ll be a seamless entry from the ground and the design will fit into the local estate. “It’s not an institutionalised look that has been common in the past. These are very modern luxury homes.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

MY PLACE After working for several years as a hairdresser and a makeup artist, Juanita Vella created her own makeup line, Tuya, four years ago. She speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey.
I’ve lived here for 50 years, and I’ve owned a beauty centre for 20 years – that’s in the town of Melton. I’ve done a lot of community programs … teaching makeup lessons. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? Just the people. I’ve grown up here, my kids have grown up here, and it’s just home. I have a sense of belonging here. What would you change about the area if you could? Probably the building of so many houses so close together. Because I live on 30 acres, the idea of so many houses so close together is very daunting to me. I’m not concerned so much about population growth, it’s more that there’s a lack of individuality now. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? Stone Bar and Grill. I like the people and the food – my favourite has to be the steak.
work, television makeup, stage makeup. My favourite thing about makeup is changing a person’s personality, making them more confident. I can show them how to look better, act differently. I’ve got so much power in my hands – people can feel and look good after getting makeup done. I’ve worked with bullied kids … plastic surgeons, burn victims, people with acne and rosacea. Why did you decide to create your own makeup line? I knew what kind of makeups were out there, and I wanted to create something everyone could use. When I was working with people who had acne or rosacea, they had to be careful with what they put on their skin … so I thought the public really needs something else they can use. What were some of the challenges about creating your own makeup line? Probably anything to do with Facebook … and just putting things and marketing on Facebook. Another was the packaging. I find it hard to find the right packaging.
Where did your love of makeup come from?
What’s one thing people would be surprised to find out about you?
When I was a very small girl, I used to cut all my dolls’ hairs. My aunt was a hairdresser and I wanted to be just like my aunt … And then I started doing makeup on them. Since then, I’ve done a lot of competition
That I love gardening. I’ve got my own garden. We’ve got so much garden, we live off the land. We’ve got our own chooks, fruit trees, vegetable gardens. I think people wouldn’t believe that.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds no problems at Houston’s Keilor Park, home of the Star Weekly office, is on the edge of a sprawling area of inter-connected industrial estates hugging Melbourne Airport. Around here, there appears to be a tradies-style cafe on almost every block. Good food? Way more sparse. That is why the opening of a bona fide barbecue joint just around the corner from our office – a two-minute walk, no need to get in the car – seemed so surreal. Still does. Houston’s Barbecue is located in the premises of Fury and Son Brewing Company. And it’s open only on Fridays. Initial visits left very mixed impressions. For example, brisket burgers and beef hot dogs that were OK – but not really nailing it. I can sympathise. This is a new operation – a very unique one, operating in an unusual (to say the least) location. Some fine-tuning, tweaking and settling-in time has definitely been in order. I returned a couple of weeks ago – and was mightily impressed. The menu has been constantly revised. But the introduction of substantial – and, yes, pricier – platters has seen Houston’s Barbecue reach new heights. A platter of brisket and smoked sausage was superb. Two hunka-chunka slices of wonderful spicy-crusted brisket. An excellent cheesy,
HOUSTON’S BARBECUE Address: 46 Concorde Drive, Keilor Park Phone: 0434 434 303 greasy smoked sausage. Just the right amount of good coleslaw and pickles. And – oh, yes – none of that brioche nonsense; instead, two slices of perfect white, sliced bread in true barbecue joint fashion. Entirely delicious – and worth every cent of the $18 I paid. Returning a week later, I have an even better time. For CTS purposes, I am happy to splash out in a way I hope doesn’t become too much of a weekly habit! The beef short rib conglomeration costs $25 and it’s a doozy. The chips are just OK. Slaw and pickles as previously enjoyed. And I would’ve appreciated that white, sliced bread again. But forget all that – what about the meat? My single, hefty rib is amazingly good. Less fatty than many barbecue beef ribs I have eaten, it’s meat is tender, plentiful and heavenly. The spicy crust might be too salty for some tastes, but I love that as well. As for doubts about the commercial viability of the singular location and one-day-a-week opening hours, I couldn’t be happier to observe that Houston’s Barbecue is a hit. In industrial Keilor Park. How about that?

In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool. 2

On 0.65 hectares, with wonderful landscaped gardens, this Victoriana tribute comes with a spectacular outdoor set-up resembling a resort: a pool rimmed with tiling, a hanging day bed inside a gazebo/summerhouse that’s ‘screened’ with cascading water, a spa and a giant pergola. The house oozes elegance and has four good-sized fitted bedrooms, the main with walk-in robe and en suite. As well as a carpeted lounge-dining room and a rumpus room with french doors to the pergola, there’s a tiled family-meals area and timber kitchen with island bench and lots of storage. Included are ducted heating, split-systems, fans on high ceilings and three water tanks. The remote-controlled extended double garage couples with a separate garage/workshop, while two side entry points are perfect for trucks, caravan and boat.
In an enclave bounded by Centenary Avenue and Coburns Road, this nester or investor is loaded with family appeal, courtesy of three living areas – one a giant rumpus room with access to an elevated, covered deck and backyard. That’s the second alfresco area, the other a spacious covered pergola off the kitchen-meals space. The first living room, behind the front door, is a carpeted open lounge room with a fireplace with traditional surround. A second fireplace is in the rumpus room. The three good-sized fitted bedrooms share two bathrooms, one with a spa tub, the other tucked behind the laundry. The kitchen, with a stack of white cabinetry, has a wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and downlights are featured. Scott Street shops are around the corner; Melton West Primary School is two minutes away by car.

In ever-popular Westlake estate, within a four-minute car trip of Woodgrove shopping centre, this modern house will have first-home buyers and investors taking note. It has the grey-and-white palette so popular today, as well as streamlined roller blinds on all windows. As well as a lounge room, there’s a light-filled family-meals space abutting the kitchen which has an island bench with handy under-cupboards facing the meals zone, plenty of other storage including pantry cupboard and a tiled splashback. There’s a separate study and three fitted bedrooms, the main with walk-in robe and en suite. Ducted heating tames Melton winters. A concrete patio is outside the family area, while side and back yards on the block of about 435 square metres are waiting for a green thumb. The large single garage has internal access.
Beautifully fitted out and with an on-trend colour scheme, here’s a stylish house just right for a family seeking a rural vibe backed by the mod-cons all the way. The property is in the heart of Darley, a picturesque township on the rise. The kitchen is stunning, with white 2pac cabinetry set against stone benches and stainless-steel appliances. It looks over a generous meals and lounge area. There are two more living areas, including a sitting room and children’s play area. The bedrooms are large, carpeted and have built-in robes. The main bedroom has floor-to ceiling sheer curtains, a generous walk-in robe and a contemporary en suite. Black aluminium doors open to a stylish undercover entertainer’s zone. Sit here and look out to your large backyard. Located within a small walk of pretty walking tracks, with the village just down the hill.

In a Kurunjang top-spot, within a stroll of Little Blind Creek Reserve and Kurunjang primary and secondary schools, this 1986 gem with a 1999 top-deck extension has been beautifully kept by the original owner-designer. Pairing with the distinctive house, an in-ground pool out back is rimmed with pavers and in a setting with a definite tropical vibe – think lofty palms, birds of paradise, yuccas and agaves. Summertime is looking very good at this place. Entry to the house is via a side door that opens directly into a slate-tiled lounge room with the same exposed brick walls and timber blinds as seen virtually throughout. Many skylights temper the brickwork and slate, while the floorplan, ahead of its time, creates a gentle flow from room to room. A spacious dining area, with a full wall of Tassie oak built-in cabinetry, has an archway framing entry to a family room, warmed by a Jindara wood heater. A load of Tassie oak cupboards and
mottled-charcoal granite benches define the kitchen, which has a cupboard pantry, dishwasher and 900mm cooker. The smart new laundry has a glass splashback and good storage, as well as a door to a secure cat run. Along a slate-tiled hallway, the fully tiled main bathroom has a deeply recessed skylight that admits streams of light, as well as a Tassie oak vanity; the toilet is separate. Also along here are a fitted study (or fourth bedroom) and two bedrooms, one of which has an en suite of burgundy-and-cream decor with Victoriana

hints. Each room has laminate floorboards – great for easy upkeep and allergy benefits. The spacious main bedroom, at the top of Tassie oak stairs – the same timber as on the floor – has a walk-in robe and a fully tiled dual-basin en suite with spa tub. Other noteworthy features include ducted heating, evaporative cooling, under-stairs storage, an alarm and CCTV and a garden shed. The block is about 875 square metres and there’s off-street parking for at least four cars. Carole Levy 19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 2, 2018

An Eagle spreads the joy around By Lance Jenkinson Amid the euphoria of winning an AFL premiership with the West Coast Eagles, rebounding defender Liam Duggan allowed his mind to wander back to his long journey to the MCG to play on that last Saturday in September. Duggan fondly recalled his junior career, one that was filled with plenty of hype as he dominated for Bacchus Marsh in the juniors, Western Jets in the TAC Cup and as captain of the St Patrick’s College before being selected by the Eagles with pick 11 in the 2014 AFL National Draft. “They all had a huge influence on me, said Duggan after the Eagles pipped Collingwood by five points in an epic 2018 AFL grand final. “I was lucky enough to go through with a good bunch of boys and lifelong mates and coaches. Some kids struggle to adapt to life at an interstate club, but Duggan was considered almost a sure thing to make a smooth transition. Now 21 and with 70 games under his belt, Duggan is showing all the leadership qualities he possessed at the Jets. In the course of the conversation, it would have been easy to conclude Duggan was a 200-game veteran. “I suppose I’ve taken on a little bit of a [leadership] role, he said. “We’ve got such a young list now that at the age of 21, I’m almost middle of the range. “It’s great to have so many young boys around – and I’m still in that category, I think. Duggan made the move to Perth a success with the blessing and support of his family. As soon as the Eagles’ song was sung with
Liam Duggan tackles Tyson Goldsack in the grand final. (Wayne Ludbey, The Age Age)
his teammates, Duggan made a hasty retreat to celebrate with his loved ones. He was all smiles as he embraced girlfriend Lauren, mum Neisha, dad James, younger brother Josh and other relatives. It was a moment Duggan will cherish forever. “This is for them standing right there, he said, glancing to his premiership medal before looking over his left shoulder to his family. “They’ve been there right from the start and I owe a lot to them.
“They ride the highs and lows with you and they’ll definitely be riding this high with us. “It’s great to come back and play in front of them and enjoy it with them. Duggan hardly put a foot wrong in the grand final, amassing 16 disposals, seven marks and three tackles. Only slight in stature, he is always willing to put his body on the line. His driving left foot out of the back half gains valuable metres for his team.

SPORT Lions are on the country prowl By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh is making a foray into senior representative basketball with the club to field a men’s team in the Country Basketball League. Wanting to provide a pathway for their juniors, the Lions have formed a team to face some of the best country teams in the state. Co-coach Jeff Feben said it was something they needed to do to take their basketball program to the next level. Until now, their highest representative side was under-21s. Feben will coach the side with Shannon Peterson. The two have previously coached together elsewhere. Grant McMillian is the assistant coach. “It’s really part of the progression to develop a senior program and pathway into men’s basketball,” Feben said.
“It’s a platform into the Big V metro competition at some point. We’ll look at doing our time in the CBL and get our credentials. What we’re trying to do is make it more than just playing basketball, but making it an event each game and getting the town behind us.” Feben, who is also the Lions’ coaching director, said there had been a lot of interest in players wanting to join the side. He said 28 players tried out and they settled on a squad of 14. “There was a lot of player interest from players in our program and players outside our program,” he said. “There’s some players that have left to go to a higher level and want to come back and help Bacchus Marsh set up the program. “There was a really good selection and some quality players to come out of Big V competition.” Melton Thoroughbreds Big V captain Jordan

Kirk will provide plenty of experience, keen to keep fit in the Big V off season. Billy Feben, who has been playing with the Geelong Supercats, is part of the squad, along
with Sunbury Jets’ Mitch Barnes and Daniel Jackson. Diquan Williams, who used to play for the Jets and ex-Melton player Jake Raynor are also part of the team. Feben said they were happy with how the team was looking. “The squad looks good. We’re strong through to eight or nine, who are very experienced. “Then we’ve got some lesser experienced players and have a junior development player.” Feben said they had set some high expectations for themselves. “I want to make finals and with the group of players we’ve got, I think we can give it a push. “But we don’t have a lot of experience and exposure against the teams we’re playing so it is hard to know.” The Lions start their season on October 13 at the Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre against the Hamilton Hurricanes.
Titans ready to take the next step North Western Titans are setting the bar higher this season in Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3. Titans men’s coach Danny Haymes said the club was ready to build on last season. He said last year, their first in division 3, was a bit of an unknown, but now they were prepared for the challenges that they would face. “This year there’s only six teams, so it will be a tough competition,” he said. “We’ve got an import for the first time, while we’ve picked up a handful of players who have played in the past. “We struggled for depth last year and wanted to pick up more players. We are looking stronger than last season.” The big signing for the Titans is that of Canadian Ben Trudel, who comes to the club after playing in China the past three years. Haymes said getting in someone like Trudel would not only help on the field, but also off it. Several others teams in the division already have imports. “He’s a left-handed pitcher who can also play outfield,” Haymes said. “We’re slowly bringing some experience into the program. He’ll help out with our pitching program and the conditioning of players. “He brings interest to the club and someone for the kids to look up to.” Haymes said with more depth this season, and a better run with injuries, they were hoping to play finals. “Last year we would lose one innings and it would kill us,” he said. “We should be able to cut that one poor innings out. We should be challenging to play finals. “Overall, the club is thriving.” The Titans have gone from two senior teams to four, including a women’s side and from one junior team to two. Haymes said anyone who wanted to play was welcome to come down to the club. He said they were still keen to get a few more players for the women’s team. “The club is growing rapidly and has been encouraged by the league and the council. “We’re looking forward to the season starting.” The Titans season got under way on Sunday against Chelsea Dolphins. For the result, go to www.starweekly.com.au/sports Anyone interested in playing can contact Danny on 0413 092 732. Tara Murray North West Titans coach Danny Haymes is looking forward to this season. Bol Bok has been recognised for his strong season. (Shawn Smits)
Bok basks in award glory Melton Thoroughbreds’ Bol Bok is one to watch in the future. Bok was named co-winner of the Big V youth league 2 men’s most valuable player award with Collingwood All Stars’ Athiaan Manyiel. Both were also named in the youth league men’s 2 All-Star 5 team. Bok led that division’s scoring, averaging 22 points a game. He also averaged 7.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. His Thoroughbreds teammates Fernando Rios-Rodriquez and Broden Collins were nominated for the All-Star 5 team, but missed out. Bok was also named Melton’s youth league most valuable player at the club’s awards night. In other Big V awards, Dexter Graham and Emmanuel Malou were named in the division 2 men’s All-Star team, while Mangar Manyang was named the defensive player of that division. In the women’s competition, Jenna Conroy was named in the division 2 team of the year. It capped off a good year for Conroy, who won Melton’s Brian Rogers Memorial Big V Women’s MVP Award. Molly Young missed out on being selected in the All-Star 5 after being a finalist. Rebecca Marshall was co-winner of the division 2 women’s Golden Hands award alongside Blackburn Vikings’ Andrea Belmonte and Mornington Breakers’ Melissa Hewitt. Meanwhile, the Thoroughbreds are looking to have a youth league women’s team from 2020. Tara Murray

Lions’ learning curve
Burras add depth for new season
By Tara Murray Melton is hoping to learn from the lessons of last season in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Lions finished on top of the north-west ladder before being bundled out in the second week of the finals to eventual premiers Williamstown. Lions coach Nathan Geisler is hoping to go further this year in the south-west competition. He said after a strong pre-season they were ready for the season to begin. “We won our first final last season and then were knocked out by Willy,” he said. “We will use that experience for a step further or two this year. “Our depth is better than last year. Numbers have been good and there’s a few new faces and most of the group has stayed together.” Out of last season’s top team, former skipper David Kirk is the only out. Geisler said Kirk, who averaged 36 with the bat last season, is going to play closer to home. With the loss of Kirk, the Lions looked to add a bit more experience. For the first time in a number of years, they’ve looked to add some imports into the group. “Five or six years ago we had an import,” Geisler said. “It’s getting harder and harder to attract local players with so many clubs offering money. “It’s a calculated risk to look overseas for players.” Sri Lankan duo Pawan Wickramasinghe and Kalhan Sineth have joined the club. Wickramasinghe is a wicketkeeper-batsman and Sineth is an all rounder, with Geisler expecting both to bat in their top six. Geisler said the addition of those two would help them keep a strong side again this season. He said the likes of Adrian Monitto and Dylan Jobson, who have been playing in the second XI, would also push for spots in the senior team. Geisler, who will play when needed again, said the key for their season would be the start, which has been the side’s strength the past couple of seasons. “We’re in a tough group and we will be looking to bag as many wins as we can before Christmas,” he said. “Then we’ll look to attack from there. After Christmas the season goes pretty quickly.” With extra depth in the senior team, Geisler said they were expecting it to flow through their other sides. He said there was some good leaders in all of their teams. “They are the pillars and will provide a bit of stability. We’ll look to have some improvement there in the twos.” The Lions’ first XI kick off their season on Saturday in a two-day clash against Malvern at Malvern.
SPORT
Diggers Rest Bulla has added depth to its list as it looks to be more competitive in the Gisborne and District Cricket McIntyre Cup Premier first grade. After finishing seventh last season and nearly 20 points outside the top four, the Burras have added some reinforcements. Wicketkeeper-batsman Upul Fernando has joined the club from PEGS in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, while Anushka Thanthiri is a leg spin bowler who has come across from Footscray United, which also plays in the VTCA. In a boost for the Burras, former coach Kevin Barker returned to the club late last month after one and half seasons away. When last at the Burras, Barker averaged 35 with the bat and took 30 wickets. He coached the side to the 2015-16 McIntyre Cup grand final which finished in a tie, with Gisborne announced the winner after finishing higher on the ladder. He was named player of the match after making a century. Burras coach Rasika Batepola said batting was one area they struggled with last season. The arrival of Fernando and the return of Barker is expected to help with that. “Hopefully it’ll be a bit of a challenge for other teams bowling against our top line-up,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of signings which is exciting. We didn’t have enough depth last season, but hopefully we’ll have some more this year.” Batepola, who is in his second season at the Burras, said he was more settled this time round and everyone was keen for the season to get under way. He said there was encouraging signs with a number of juniors starting to come through the ranks. Having missed finals last season, Batepola said that was the clear focus this time around. The Burras start their season on Saturday in a one-dayer against reigning premiers Bacchus Marsh. In other first round matches, Romsey hosts Wallan, Sunbury faces Sunbury United in the local derby and Woodend faces Gisborne. Tara Murray
Melton’s Ben MacRae. (Shawn Smits)
Centrals look overseas for new recruits Melton Centrals hope to have a more stable line up as they plan their campaign to rise up the Victorian Turf Cricket Association ranks. It was a tough season for the Centrals last season, they finished seventh in what is now known as the Russell Pollock Shield division 5. Captain-coach Adam Hulett said things didn’t go right for them last season. Their top three sides all missed out on finals. “We had a lot of unavailability at the wrong time,” he said. “We dropped a lot of games when we were in good positions but we couldn’t get over the line. “Hopefully this season we’ll have every team in finals.” Hulett said it had been a strong preseason with plenty of players returning to the club and numbers had been strong at training. He said suitable weather had meant they had got some good training sessions in. Hulett said the biggest improvement for the club would be increased depth.
“We’ve pretty much kept everyone,” he said. “We’ve started to get everyone flowing in from hockey, football and basketball. “We’ve had a couple of players join us from Sri Lanka as well.” It will be the first time Centrals have had imports. They have recruited two Sri Lankan players, a top-order bat who can bowl off spin and a middle order batsman who also bowls spin. Hulett said the decision to recruit imports was motivated by a desire to try something different. “It’s all been covered by sponsors,” he said. “It’ll boost the club up a bit and give us a bit more experience. “It’s something new and a little bit of trial and error. Hopefully it works and something we’ll look more to in the future.” With the two recruits in the top side, it will mean more pressure for spots, which Hulett said was good for the club.
“There’s a little more depth, so it should filter through the grades.” With changes to the VTCA structure, Hulett said they would face several different teams this season. Centrals will again be in the Russell Pollock Shield competition. “I think there has been four teams that have changed in and four that have changed out. “They’ll be new teams to play against, whether it’s a good or bad thing we’re not sure yet.” Centrals start their season on Saturday against Williamstown Colts. Melton South Royals plays Bellbridge. In the Charles Clark Shield Division 4, Caroline Springs hosts East Coburg and Sydenham-Hillside will play Sunshine YCW. Tara Murray Adam Hulett will again be Melton Centrals captain-coach. (Mark Wilson) 37 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 2, 2018
