Cut up over forest plan By Sumeyya Ilanbey Reclassifying Wombat State Forest to become a national park would be an “ecological disaster”, according to forest supporters. The Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) has been ordered by the state government to investigate the future use and classifications of Wombat, Wellsford, Mount Cole and Pyrenees Ranges state forests. A VEAC draft report’s recommendations include changing the status of the Wombat State Forest by establishing the Wombat-Lerderderg National Park – a move that could restrict public access. The report is open for public comment until December 10. But regular forest user Loris Duclos, and
recipient of the commonwealth’s centenary medal for “outstanding service to the environment, particularly the Wombat State Forest”, has slammed the recommendation and described it as an “ecological disaster”. “Our forest went through two decades of unsustainable industrial logging, which our community fought hard against to stop from happening,” Ms Duclos said. “In the 1990s, the fight was against the extreme right who wanted to chop everything. The fight has now become against the extreme left who want to keep people out of large areas of the forest.” After the win in the 1990s to ban clear-felling, Ms Duclos said new tree growth had not been managed properly, creating a “suppressed”
designated picnic spots,” Mr Smitham says. “But people go up there to enjoy the solitude and isolation … They don’t want to be coralled into a caravan park situation.” He said there has been a “groundswell” of support against classifying the Wombat State Forest into a national park and is urging the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio to heed community concerns. “It will be so disappointing to lose that area that’s become so sacred to us,” Mr Smitham said. “There’s nowhere else we could consider to go nearby.” The state government was contacted for comment. forest, where trees are “skinny and stumped”. She said any plans to close off the forest to the public would only exacerbate the fire risk and stymie efforts to restore the forest to its full potential. “Most people from Melbourne think national parks are a good thing,” Ms Duclos said. “But this isn’t a natural, self-sustaining system – it’s a highly damaged system and now we have the extreme left who are going for the total lock-up without putting the environment first.” Bacchus Marsh retiree Steve Smitham has camped at the forest for the past 47 years. He said changing the Wombat State Forest’s status will restrict his ability to enjoy the outdoors. “If they allow for camping, it’ll be in

Council revs up motorsport bid By Sumeyya Ilanbey Moorabool council has set its sights on Fiskville becoming Australia’s top motorsport destination. The council is asking the state government to fund a business case for a motoring hub that will include a sealed circuit; facilities for vehicle and product testing, driver training and research; and venues for car shows, swap meetings, concerts, conferences and exhibitions. The idea is supported by industry bodies, including the Confederation of Motor Sport Australia, as well as the nearby cities of Ballarat and Geelong.
Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the total cost of the project could be up to $60 million, and the council was not in a position to do it alone. “Development of Fiskville as a motoring hub could well be the key to a healthy economic outlook for Ballan and the rest of the shire,” Cr Tatchell said. “A business case will prove the worth of the project, but it is not something we can do alone.” The business case will include design and engineering plans, economic and financial modelling and project management. The council said the industry employed more than 4000 people around Australia.
Cr Tatchell said industry research showing motorsport participants on average paid for nine nights’ accommodation each year, supported council’s bid for a business plan. He is calling on the state government to support the proposal and is hoping Regional Development Victoria, Emergency Victoria and Sports and Recreation Victoria will contribute towards the development of the project. “This is one of many plans we have to shore up Moorabool’s economic future,” Cr Tatchell said. “We are prepared to work hard and finance whatever we can, but we need government support.”
Confederation of Motor Sport Australia chief executive Eugene Arocca said the organisation fully supported the project and the push for a business case. “We know that motorsport generates more than $700 million of direct economic impact in Victoria alone,” Mr Arocca said. “The development is a terrific opportunity for this area and brings significant economic and sporting opportunities. “CAMS worked very closely with the developers of The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia and we have already seen the opportunities and stunning feedback this new facility has received in a short few months.”

More Moorabool sports clubs will be able to train longer into the night thanks to a state and local government partnership. Treasurer Tim Pallas visited Ballan last week to announce Moorabool council was successful in its application to borrow $1.6 million through the Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme. The scheme allows councils to borrow money at the reduced interest rate of 1.65 per cent, to be paid over 10 years. The money will be used to install competition-standard lighting on ovals at Ballan, Gordon, Wallace, Bungaree and Dunnstown recreation reserves. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the lighting would make a huge difference. “Clubs from Ballan to Ballarat all punch above their weight with substandard facilities … and still get the job done,” Cr Tatchell said. “These are the sorts of incentives the clubs need so the clubs can continue fighting the good fight. “The extra lighting … will open up capacity and give football teams the same opportunities they have in Ballarat,” Cr Tatchell said. Mr Pallas described it “as good a deal as you can get anywhere”. “Poor lighting at these venues compromises the ability of evening training, so the project will enable much greater participation,” he said. “Better lighting, more hours and hopefully better community wellbeing.”

Ballan man missing
Family members of a missing elderly Ballan man are pleading for their father’s return. There are growing concerns for the safety of 88-year-old Albert Smith, who left an aged-care facility on Inglis Street, Ballan, about 7am on Monday, October 8. Daughter Wendy said her dad was “fiercely independent” and unhappy about being in care. She said he told staff he was going home, but he had not been heard from since. Mr Smith is known to hitch-hike and police believe he may be travelling to Mount Doran or Ballarat.

New code word for cool Tech-minded girls are being invited to improve and hone their skills. Code Like a Girl – a Melbourne-based female tech start-up – is bringing its Roaming Classroom for Rebel Girls to the west. The mobile pop-up classroom comes kitted out with colourful desks, lockers, neon lamps and motivational posters to transform local venues into inspirational spaces. Its workshops are aimed at increasing diversity in Australia’s future tech industry. The Brimbank classes will be held at the Visy Cares Auditorium, 80B Harvester Road, Sunshine on Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21. There will be three workshops each day for girls aged six to 18. Code Like a Girl co-founder Vanessa Doake
said the idea was for girls to dive into coding in an inspired setting. “When girls come into tech companies in the city there’s a real ‘wow factor’, but anytime anything happens in the outer suburbs or regional towns, they’re stuck with a community hall or library,” Ms Doake said. She said herself and fellow founder Ally Watson had worked hard to create a “cool” space they would have loved themselves as young girls. “The bright colours, the posters, the little details like programmable lamps … we hope the girls are going to be truly inspired,” she said. Tickets can be purchased for $5 at codelikeagirl.org/roaming-classroom. Tate Papworth

STATE ELECTION
Labor’s $3m Ballan sport pledge By Sumeyya Ilanbey A major redevelopment of the Ballan Recreation Reserve has been promised by the Labor Party if it wins next month’s state election. Treasurer Tim Pallas visited the reserve last week to announce funding of $3 million for the project, which will include a new pavilion, oval extension and creation of a playing space large enough for two soccer fields. Ballan Recreation Reserve chairman Billy Smith said the existing pavilion was past its use-by-date and in desperate need
of a re-build. “We’ve been on about these upgrades for six or seven years,” he said. “This facility gets used almost seven days a week … by cricket, football, netball, tennis, bowling, karate clubs, as well as the Lions … we’ve got a lot of user groups. “The playing condition of the oval is good, but the building is below par. We’re in a building that’s almost 50 years old.” The new pavilion will include female-friendly changerooms and a function space big enough
to accomodate 200 people. The existing pavilion is been described as being “below an acceptable standard” in Moorabool council’s masterplan for the site. Mr Pallas said community sport was about “community spirit” and the Labor Party’s election commitment was focused on making Ballan’s sports clubs and community stronger. “By bringing the oval up to the size required for senior footy, we’ll make sure Ballan’s local clubs keep kicking goals,” Mr Pallas
said. “We know there’s a strong increase in people moving to the area and also female participating in sport, so we need to have much more substantial investment by the state for these areas.” The Coalition last month promised $1 million towards upgrades at the reserve, including extending the football oval and redeveloping the netball and tennis courts. The Liberal candidate for Buninyong, Andrew Kilmartin, said Ballan had made a “huge contribution” to participation in community sport and it was “only fair” it received support.
Kinder revamp unveiled Diggers Rest Preschool is to get a $1.3 million overhaul. The refurbishments, which will include an extension to the existing learning space, will create room for an additional 33 children. The state government announced it would be contributing $350,000 towards the upgrades, with the remaining $979,000 to be funded by Melton council. Early Childhood Education Minister Jenny Mikakos said more than 50 kindergartens across the state would be upgraded as part of the 2018-19 Children’s Facilities Capital Program. The announcement came as Labor announced its election commitment to build 785 new kinders and upgrade 170 more. “Universal access to three-year-old kinder is an Australian-first and, make no mistake, this will change lives,” Ms Mikakos said.
“We’ve promised to roll out three-year-old kinder and we’re backing it up, undertaking the biggest early education build our state has ever seen.” The Digggers Rest upgrades are expected to start soon and finish by the end of next year. Melton mayor Bob Turner thanked the state government for its contribution. “The Diggers Rest Preschool will be extended in order to meet the service needs of children and families … in Diggers Rest,” he said. “These renovations will help so many children get the best start to their education.” Sumeyya Ilanbey Sunbury MP Josh Bull, Jenny Mikakos and Bob Turner enjoy a snack with children at Diggers Rest Preschool.(Supplied)

New shire chief keen to start By Sumeyya Ilanbey Before applying for the role of Moorabool chief executive, Derek Madden checked the area out. It was the diversity of the region – the rural towns and the urban suburbs – that sealed the deal for Mr Madden, who last week signed on as Moorabool chief executive following Rob Croxford’s resignation. When asked about his plans for the first 100 days in the job, Mr Madden said he wanted to talk with the staff and build a team which could deliver great services. “In addition to that, I want to get an understanding of rural townships and their needs … ensuring they’re not getting left behind,” he said. Mr Madden likens the challenges facing Moorabool as similar to those faced by Cardinia Shire, in south-west Victoria, a decade ago. He has been with Cardinia Shire as corporate services general manager for more than eight years. “During my time at Cardinia, I did see that the growth corridor was taking up a lot of resources, financially and staff time, so just making sure that’s allocated evenly,” he said. At Cardinia, Mr Madden led a digital transformation of council offices and services which included moving to a new civic centre four years ago, designed to give staff flexible working spaces. “People want to access services 24/7 and the only way you can do that is through a digital channel,” he said. “So to me, that would be one of my key

drivers over my term [at Moorabool] – to look at the service online and see what else can be made available.” Tapping into various funding pools will also be a key focus. Mr Madden believes the Moorabool council needs to access money from a range of traditional and unconventional sources. “One of the key things for me is to look at key performance indicators and really strengthen the relationship with state and federal governments,” he said. “The ratepayer can only afford so much of the infrastructure going forward, so it really is around building those connections which are quite strong and really enhancing them.” Mr Madden’s five-year term starts October 29.

Project ripe for success From the cherry type to deliciously juicy heirlooms, tomatoes are a universal favourite. And now is the perfect time for green thumbs and garden tragics to get involved in Melton council’s Tomato Project. The project celebrates all things tomato – from growing to preserving to eating. Residents are being encouraged to pick up a Tomato Project postcard and free tomato seeds from their local neighbourhood house, community centre or the Melton and Caroline Springs civic centres. “Where our food comes from, how we
prepare it and who we share meals with has a huge impact on our health, our community and our planet,” according to the council website. “We hope that once people have discovered how delicious homegrown tomatoes taste and how cheap and easy they are to grow, they will be inspired to prepare more fresh food and expand their home vegie patch or pots.” For more information, email socialplanningprojects@melton.vic.gov.au or visit Healthy City of Melton on Facebook. MP exits after highs and lows After 19 years as Melton MP, Don Nardella is retiring. He speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey about life in politics and his take on its “brutal” nature. If you had your time again, what would you do differently and what would you do the same?
Why did you decide to enter into politics?
What was your motivation for staying in this cut-throat industry for 26 years?
That’s an impossible question, really. I’ve gone through Labor’s financial statements, going back to ’99, and the things I was asking for then for my community, we’ve all gotten … and it’s not been easy. In these types of seats, you have to push. What’s your proudest moments?
(Marco De Luca)
My mother. When I was growing up … the Whitlam government [introduced] all these reforms and the decision to pull out of Vietnam – bring our boys and women home and Medibank. Then I remember this, one day I’d come home from school … and mum says: “They’ve sacked Whitlam.” And I said: “No they haven’t. Australia is a democracy, they can’t sack Whitlam.” So she turns on the telly, and there it was – the sacking of the Whitlam government in November, 1975. So those discussions with mum, and just that period of time and other influences over time … we went to a demonstration for the Newport power station … and then got involved in trade unions when I was on the tools. It’s been that type of journey, but basically started with my mum and the discussions we were having. When mum passed away, I inherited all these documents. So I’m looking through this stuff – never seen them before – and these little cards come out. She was a member, starting I think in 1936 or 1937, of the Christian Democrats in Italy … and she was a member until ’62. Mum was lovely. I remember this one funeral we went to in Deer Park, it was 2002. She got up and gave a eulogy. She’s up there, she eulogises about the deceased, and then says: “The election is coming up and my son, Don Nardella – he’s sitting just there – you vote for him.” So I think she was a frustrated politician herself.
It’s the people; it’s about looking after the people; it’s about social justice and dealing with people and their problems. When somebody walks into this office, they have what to them is an immense problem, an immense burden on their shoulders. What we do, with the staff, is treat them with dignity and try to do what we can to help them. Politics can be about a lot of things, but in the end it’s about how you look after your resident – that’s been one of the paramount philosophies for me.

Being part of the mainstream and being part of government is always difficult. The Greens or Pauline Hanson aren’t a party of government – they’re a party of protest. These parties capture a segment of the market – the market being voters. If you have a look, [US President Donald] Trump did the segmentation extremely well … he energised his base, got them to come out and to vote. People in Australia see that and think they can segment and attack major parties.

you’d have an issue and then you’d get over it … but now it’s extremely personal and it’s extremely destructive. I don’t think it helps public debate when you should be debating and discussing policy.

Mr Sabharwal is from northern India and introduced Gare to some of his favourite dishes – butter chicken curry, rice and a chop chop salad. “It was an honour to be featured on Anna Gare’s Cab Fare and share my story with Anna,” Mr Sabharwal said. “Being a 13cabs driver is a great career – I’m always getting to meet all kinds of people, but I never imagined it would lead to me being on TV.” Gare said the show uncovered traditional dishes from the taxi drivers’ homelands, and delved into their experiences of transitioning their lives to Australia. “I hope through watching the show, others are inspired to have conversations with their cab drivers, whether it’s about the driver’s story or their favourite traditional dishes,” she said.

Melton council complaints rise By Sumeyya Ilanbey Complaints about Melton council to the Victorian Ombudsman increased by 36 per cent in a year. The Ombudsman received 60 complaints about the council in the past financial year, up from 44 the previous year, but would not disclose how they had been dealt with and what the outcomes were. However, Melton legal and governance manager Christine Denyer says the council has been cleared of every complaint.
Ms Denyer said the council “actively” encouraged residents to contact the Ombudsman if they were unsatisfied with the way their complaints were being handled. “Melton City Council’s records indicate that in the 2017-18 financial year, the Ombudsman made inquiries in relation to seven complaints,” she said. “Council’s records also indicate that in all of these seven cases, council was found to have acted appropriately and/or no further action was taken by the Ombudsman in relation to the complaint.”
The Ombudsman’s annual report stated that when complaints about councils were received, complainants were encouraged to contact their councils in a bid for resolution. In most cases, complaints are resolved informally rather than being investigated. “Where a complaint is informally resolved, we do not determine whether the complaint is substantiated,” the report stated. “We may also receive complaints where a specific grievance illustrates a wider issue, and we make proposals for administrative improvement.”
The issues most complained about to the Ombudsman, across the state, were planning, nuisances, local laws, parking and rates. “Complaints also concerned conflict of interest, improper conduct, poor governance and complaint handling,” the report stated. Moreland, Greater Geelong, Casey, Melbourne and Hume were the top five most complained about councils. Maribyrnong and Brimbank councils were the most complained about western suburbs councils, followed by Wyndham and Melton.
Truck tucker on menu Navan Park in Melton West will be transformed into a foodie haven when food trucks cook up a storm for the next six months. Weir Views mum Dotty Hazell has been busy organising Melton’s first recurring food truck event, with the first to be held next month. “It’s just something I thought Melton needed,” Ms Hazell said. “Instead of going to one takeaway shop and the whole family having to eat the same thing … you’ll be able to get a different range of foods. Kids have got somewhere to play at the park and everyone can pick what they want to pick.” There will be a range of foods catering to various dietary requirements, including gluten-free, vegan and halal. Ms Hazell hopes the food trucks will inject some colour, and culinary delights, into Melton.
She says the first session will include the likes of ice cream, fish and chips, and Indian street food. The event will run from 5.30-8.30pm on the first Friday of each month (except for January, when it will be the second Friday of the month) at Navan Park, Centenary Avenue, Melton West. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE Melton was once a thoroughbred horse industry capital, before losing its unofficial crown to Seymour. Cara Kavanaugh, of Cityview Farm in Toolern Vale, tells Sumeyya Ilanbey she wants to revive the industry in Melton. What’s your connection to Melton?
We have permanent mares … and we also have seasonal mares who are here just for the spring. They might live in South Australia, Queensland or even Western Australia. People want their mare to breed with Victorian stallions. And we’ve also got some really good studs nearby … the really great thing about Melton is that we’re close to the big studs, the city and the airport.
I grew up in Toolern Vale. I went to primary school at St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School and high school to Mowbray. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? The horses. I was lucky enough to grow up on an equestrian park and having the horses in my backyard. Both sides of my family were into horses. My grandfather, Jack Shelley, was a very famous trotting driver and he also lived in Melton, on Bulmans Road – he was like the Bart Cummings of the trotting world. That was my dad’s side. My mum’s side had an equestrian centre, and then I married into a horsing family – I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What is so special about Victorian stallions? First and foremost, there are a lot of great stallions in Victoria. Secondly, the racing is best in terms of prizemoney and opportunity. And thirdly, there’s a really good bonus scheme – so if you breed a horse to Victorian stallions, there’s great bonus prizemoney. Why do you want to reclaim the title of thoroughbred country?
What would you change about the area if you could?
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? Bunnings. We’ve just done up our house, so we went there a lot. I’ve got a 10-month-old and three-year-old so we are on the farm a lot and
Cara Kavanagh with husband Levi and their children Georgina and Oliver. (Dennis Manktelow)
during spring it’s our busiest time – so apart from doing the groceries, I’m here a lot and I’m happy to be here. What kind of plans do you have to reclaim the thoroughbred country title? There’s a handful of very successful farms here in the Melton, Toolern Vale area. So we’ve got to work together to promote that the area is the best place to breed – that’s definitely

one of the things we need to do. It could be by doing simple things like a hashtag or key messages when talking to media – just little, simple things. If we had a budget, we could do a lot more in terms of marketing, advertising, bumper stickers, advertisements on specific racing channels. Right now, in the near future, it’s about working together, word of mouth and social media. What do you do at Cityview Farm?
We believe it’s actually the best place for your horses to grow and develop – pastures are great and the climate is great. If we can have horses sent to our area, that would mean more horses and the more horses we have, the more staff we can employ. What’s one thing people would be surprised to find out about you? I have a forensic science degree with honours and a masters degree in animal science. My forensics degree always shocks people and I don’t really use it – I graduated with first-class honours and then I decided I love horses too much.

Twenty-years-ago, Melton was thoroughbred country and now Nagambie, Seymour have sort of appointed themselves as throroughbred country in Victoria. I’d love for [Melton] to be famous again. Our farms, pastures here are still the best in Victoria. I’d love to bring back what people think about us and then be the star of the show again.

MELTON 10 Atkin Street, 3337 PRD Nationwide: 9747 6665
Price: $395,000 – $420,000
This brick veneer, built on a rock-solid concrete slab for lasting stability, is within a five-minute walk of High Street and a three-minute car trip to St Dominic’s Primary School and Melton Secondary College. It will have immediate appeal for investors and smaller families, the latter particularly likely to respond to the character found indoors and the big backyard ripe for personal projects. panels, while the main bedroom has a chocolate accent wall and a large window framing leafy views. Each room has a ceiling fan and they share a good-sized bathroom with an extra-long vanity bench. A carpeted lounge room, with soft-grey tabs and lace at windows, has a chocolate accent wall and a pitched ceiling with exposed beams. It’s open to the dining area, also with pitched ceiling and with floor tiles matching those in the adjoining kitchen, separated via in-wall double sliders.
The kitchen, with a wide window behind the sink that frames leafy views, has a cupboard pantry and a dishwasher and a stainless-steel 800mm cooker. Gas ducted heating, an airconditioner and multiple ceiling fans provide seasonal comfort. The long back verandah faces a brick-paved walkway and a fence heavily screened in ivy. It’s a lovely shady spot to sit and enjoy a drink with friends or to wind down the day. A concrete driveway, providing plenty of

off-street parking, heads through gates to a shed and there’s another shed on the other side of the yard. A spacious brick-paved area in the backyard has shallow steps up to the lawn area. There’s plenty of space for kids and pets – and for imagination to run free with other ideas. Perhaps a veggie patch, playground or dream garden? The block is about 600 square metres. Extra pain for Royals
Bacchus Marsh in fighting win
By Tara Murray Melton South Royals’ poor start to the season continued with a second straight loss in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Russell Pollock Shield division 5 competition. After dropping their first match to Melton Centrals, the Royals were poor against Bellbridge on Saturday. Royals captain Paul Hetherington said they never looked likely. Bellbridge made 8-176 off its overs before the Royals were bowled out for 140. “We never got going,â€? Hetherington said. “In previous years we’ve had poor starts, but we were hoping to get off to a good start this year. “They played better than us. We conceded 41 extras – and you can’t expect to bowl that and win at first XI grade cricket. “That was the difference ‌ we didn’t execute.â€? Hetherington was the pick of the bowlers, with three wickets. With the bat, Matthew O’Brien top scored with 37 and Hetherington scored 32. “We were 3-20 so we were behind the eight ball to start with,â€? Hetherington said. “So far we’ve had little patches of good cricket, but we haven’t had everyone to put it all together.â€? Hetherington said that despite the poor start, finals remained the side’s aim. He said they had added four players to the first XI team, including Nathan D’Antonio, O’Brien and Jonathon Caderamanpulle. “We expect to play finals,â€? he said. “If we don’t reach that goal, we would be disappointed.â€? D’Antonio, a key top order batsman, missed Saturday’s game , but is expected to return this week. Melton Centrals made it two from two, beating Williamstown Colts.
Bacchus Marsh has got its Central Highlands Bowls Division season off to the ideal start with a high-scoring win in division 1. Facing Gisborne Yellow, which was promoted after winning division 2 last season, Bacchus Marsh had to fight to come away with the points. While the rinks of Phil Minniti and Don Louttit had big wins, those of Daniel Wills and Simon Cornock experienced much closer contests. Willis’ rink won by one shot, while Cornock’s rink lost, giving Bacchus Marsh the 106 (16)-82 (2) victory. In other matches, Kyneton Golf won the grand final rematch, defeating Gisborne Red, 96 (12)-86 (6). While Golf only won one rink, it proved to be enough. Skipped by Stephen Taylor, that rink won 31-11. Romsey defeated Trentham 93 (14)-84 (4) and Lancefield won the closest match of the round, beating Kyneton 98 (14)-92 (4). Bacchus Marsh and Diggers Rest were among the winners in division 2. In Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 1, Melton made it two from two. It faced Lalor, which earned promotion after last season. After a slow start, Melton sealed the win in the back nine ends to win 90 (18)-74 (0). This week, Melton will face another unbeaten team, Fitzroy-Victoria.
Matthew O’Brien is one of the inclusions for Melton South Royals. (Damjan Janevski)

31 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 16, 2018
SPORT Bacchus Marsh locks down new coach for two seasons Bacchus Marsh has appointed Banyule premiership-winning coach Peter Davey as its senior coach for the next two seasons. Davey, who coached Banyule to a Northern Football League division 3 premiership in 2017, was named as the Cobras’ new coach on Thursday. He replaces Travis Hodgson who stepped down from the role with 12 months left on his contract. Hodgson has since been appointed to the Sunbury Lions. Davey said he was still getting his head around the appointment. “I had spoken to a few clubs, but Bacchus Marsh came out of the blue,” he said. “I’ve moved down to Geelong and spoke with some Geelong clubs. [Bacchus Marsh president] Adam Sutherland called me out
of the blue and asked would I be interested in having a chat. “It happened in the space of a week.” Davey said he knew little about the Cobras heading into the interview, but had been catching up on his research the past week. He said he was excited by the opportunity. Davey coached Banyule in the Northern Football League for the past two yeas. In that time, they won a division 3 premiership and then played division 2 finals this year. Davey said as he was living so far away and Banyule needed someone who could commit full-time to the role, he decided it was the best decision to step down. Davey helped his past two sides come from the bottom of the ladder and helped them
move up the ladder, but he’s got a different challenge at the Cobras. While they finished fifth this year, the Cobras played in the past two grand finals and arguably have one of the better lists in the competition. “With the calibre of players and coming off grand finals and premierships, it is a new challenge for me,” he said. “I want the high expectations. I’m really impressed with what they have done as a club.” Sutherland said Davey came highly recommended. “He was super impressive in the interview,” he said. “He came as a recommendation from someone I knew. He wasn’t even looking our way when we got in touch with him.
On the road to rebuilding By Tara Murray Eynesbury is looking on this season as one to rebuild in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s Johnstone Shield District Firsts competition. After losing a number of players, including former captain Hayden Castle and coach Luke Castle, the Eagles have decided to reset. Tristan Francis, who was the third gun batsman along with the Castle brothers the past couple of seasons, has been named captain-coach. Speaking after the Eagles second round loss to Rupertswood on Saturday, Francis said the team was rebuilding. “We’re headed in a new direction and it’s about finding our identity as a community team,” he said. “We want to get Eynesbury people into the team. We want to try and get the kids through.” As a result, the Eagles’ top side this season has little experience to draw on. Three players, Ryan Cran, Joshua Oldfield and Zach Micallef, who are still eligible to play under-15s, lined up in the opening round for the Eagles. Oldfield, opened the bowling on Saturday. Francis said several players have not played at this level before. “Someone like Dan Stark was playing in G-grade last season. He has been fantastic behind the stumps.” Francis said he could not fault the effort in the opening two rounds, but they had been out-classed. On Saturday, they had their moments against Rupertswood. The Eagles made 7-182. Francis, who made 100, was happy with that score. “We batted quite well,” he said. “Last week we lost patches of wickets. This game we were able to build some partnerships. “Trent [Wemyss] and myself made 111 for the first wicket. It was good to get some runs. “My plan was to bat for as long as possible … I got to the 100 before I threw it away.” With 182 on the board, Francis was confident they could get the job done. Jordan Curran quickly ended that, as he destroyed the Eagles’ bowling attack. Francis said they were hit to all areas of the ground as Rupo made 3-185 in just 23 overs. “We were 40-50 runs short at the end of the day,” he said. “Shashi [Siriwardana] bowled extremely well without any luck. The ball went through the slips and just fell short of fielders. He was the pick of the bowlers.” The Eagles this week face Bacchus Marsh, which is also without a win. At the other end of the ladder, St Anthonys made it two from two with a good win against East Sunbury. The Saints made 5-202 with Paul Scott making 118 not out. 32 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 16, 2018
“He came recommended from both the clubs he’d been at and that’s the best recommendation you can get.” Sutherland said with the coaching appointment out of the way, he expected the player signings to start flowing in. He said he was confident there would not be many changes to the side that was knocked out in the first week of the finals. “Most will be signed in the near future,” he said. “The club is really settled off field and a very stable club. The only thing we weren’t happy about is how it went on field [with the seniors]. “We didn’t achieve what we thought we should have achieved.” Tara Murray
Gale’s force the key to Melton’s win Melton’s Anthony Gale turned back the clock as he guided his team to an opening round win in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west competition. A veteran of more than 400 first XI games for the Lions, Gale batted through the whole innings to help the Lions secure victory against Malvern with just under four overs remaining. The Lions started the day needing 223, so a strong batting performance was needed. The Lions had no trouble getting the runs, finishing 2-226. Lions coach Nathan Geisler said it was good to get some time at the crease for the top order. “It was a really good win with only two wickets down,” he said. “We had a few players unavailable as well. To get the opportunity early on to get the top four or five time in the middle is perfect. “We had a 100-run partnership and two 60-run partnerships.” The key to the innings was Gale, who went on to finish 111 not out from 224 balls. Geisler said he didn’t know the last time Gale made 100, but statistics online going back to 2000 show he hasn’t made one in that time. “Butch is meant to play in the twos this year,” Geisler said. “We had to bring him up with guys missing. “He was 75 at tea and I said to him he could pinch a 100 here, he didn’t think he’d get. “He knuckled down and got one.” All four batsmen made contributions of 21 or more, with Alan Steenholdt finishing 49 not out. With a win to start the season, the Lions have three players who should return this week. Nathan Taylor, Matt Stead and Jake Charge all missed the round one match. Geisler said it was a good selection headache to have. The Lions face Hoppers Crossing which also had a first-up win. “They gave us a touch up last year, so we would like to get one back against them.”

Bacchus Marsh Lions step up for a winning debut Bacchus Marsh Lions have enjoyed a good first hit-out in Country Basketball League south-west division. Playing another newcomer, Hamilton Hurricanes, the Lions greater experience made a big difference in their 86-44 win. Lions’ co-coach Jeff Feben said their CBL debut had unfolded as well as could be expected. “It was pretty good,” he said. “It was a comfortable win in the end and good for the club. “We wanted to go out there and be competitive and give a reason for the spectators to come back and bring others with them – and we did that.” The Lions jumped out of the blocks early in the game, giving them a lead of 34-16 at the first break.
Billy Feben was the star early on, outscoring the entire Hurricane side by himself in the first quarter with 17 points. The margin in favour of the Lions was 23 points at the main break and 40 points at three-quarter time. With the game already won, the coaches were quite happy to run the Lions’ bench in the final quarter. Every Lion player got on court and scored. “It was a good experience to get everyone on the court,” Feben said. “We were prepared – if we were well up or well down, we’d get minutes into everyone, and it happened in round one in front of an excited crowd. “One of the younger players, Max Beaumont, played well and Tyler Collins stepped up.”
The Lions after their first game. (Supplied)
Billy Feben top scored with 23 points, with his father saying he could have scored 40-plus if he had played more minutes.
Jeff Feben said Jordan Kirk (10 points) and Mitch Barnes (seven points) both had good games. While the Lions have got a win on the board, they understand there is a long season ahead. This weekend, they will face two teams that had success last season – Horsham and Colac – in what the coach said would again be a journey into the unknown for Bacchus Marsh. “We play the north-west conference winners in Horsham and then the south-west conference winners in Colac,” Feben said. “And both those teams lost this week. “We don’t know if they’ve lost players or other teams have got better.” Tara Murray
Unbeaten Bulls still warming up
Daniel Lalor continues his good start to the season. (Mark Wilson)
By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh hasn’t hit its straps yet, but remains undefeated after two rounds of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts competition. The Bulls weren’t at their best on Saturday against Sunbury, but were able to get the job done. After electing to bat, the Bulls made 156 from their overs in an up-and-down innings. Bulls captain-coach James Lidgett said after the game he thought the score was below par on that pitch. Youngster Daniel Lalor led the way for the Bulls, making 55 – his second 50 in as many matches. Lidgett was full of praise for Lalor. “He is incredible,” he said. “I’ve coached him through the pathways for a little bit. His improvement in the last few years has been insane. “He’s a pretty smart cricketer … he can address the situation and play accordingly.” While not 100 per cent happy with the batting performance, Lidgett was confident about his side’s chances with the ball. He was right, with the Bulls bowling Sunbury out for 129. Madushanka Ekanayaka, last season’s leading wicket taker, took 4-16, while Ian Spiteri snared three wickets. Lidgett said that this season, the club had more bowling depth across the grades. “It’s not something we focused on, but we’ve had players coming back to the club so we’ve had a bit of luck,” he said.
“The extra depth has added some more quality at the club and it improves everyone with competition for spots.” Lidgett said the first XI wasn’t yet at full strength, hampered by a few injuries, but that the players were confident they could win any game as long as they played their own style of cricket. The club’s off season inclusions include James Bailey and Milinda Sepala, who played at the club two seasons ago. The Bulls entered the season as one of the favourites, having retained most of their premiership side, but Lidgett said they weren’t going to get ahead of themselves. “We want to try and make finals,” he said. “We’re not quite hitting our straps yet, but if we keep putting in that effort … we don’t want to look too far ahead. There’s still a lot of cricket to be played.” The Bulls will this week face Sunbury United, which lost to Woodend in a high-scoring game. United made 2-227 from its overs, which Woodend made with ease, finishing 0-228. Josh Eastley was unbeaten on 142. Diggers Rest got its first win of the season, beating Wallan. The Burras made 8-173 from their overs with Lindon Dowsett top scoring with 65 at the top of the order. Wallan, in reply, made 126. Darren Quarrell took three wickets for the Burras. Gisborne had no issues scoring a big win over Romsey. The Dragons bowled Romsey out for 93 before quickly getting to 2-96 to remain the other unbeaten team.

Westside Strikers had three players, including the winner, finish in the top five of the FFV state league 5 west best-and-fairest award. Jordan Borg, who spearheaded the Strikers’ championship winning side this season, claimed the award, finishing on 21 votes. He finished five votes clear of Melton Phoenix’s Jason Hill, who was ineligible. Deakin University’s Troy Harrison (also ineligible) and Striker Nicola Orofino finished on 15 votes. Another Westside Striker, Bradley Cashion, finished a further vote back. Borg also claimed the golden boot award for scoring the most goals in the division. He scored 30 goals, nine clear of Gisborne’s Jake McIntyre. The awards cap off a stunning year for the Strikers, who won a championship in their first senior season.

Darley has suffered a second straight loss in the Ballarat Cricket Association. After a disappointing day with the bat in round one, the Lions were looking for a better day on Saturday against Wendouree. While they got that, the total of 136 never looked enough. Captain-coach Michael Alexander top scored with 44. Wendouree made the runs with six balls remaining, finishing 6-137. Corey Beaton took three wickets for the Lions. Former captain-coach Heath Pritchard returned to the side after a year out of the game. The Lions this week face East Ballarat.
