Muddy fun is beyond hard

(Pictures: Shawn Smits)

Thousands braved cold and blustery conditions at the weekend to test their mettle in Tough Mudder. More than 15,000 athletes and fitness faithfuls from across the state descended on St Anne’s Vineyard in Myrniong to tackle the gruelling circuit. The endurance event, in its third year at Myrniong, raises money for beyondblue. Tough Mudder organiser Paul Mudge said wet weather had provided a “perfect storm” for participants in the obstacle course challenge. Mr Mudge said the event was all about teamwork and “people getting out of their comfort zone”, as well as raising awareness for the beyondblue cause. “It’s important we recognise that depression and anxiety affects a wide range of people,” he said. “Anyone can have a tough exterior, but you never truly know how a person is feeling inside. “By working with beyondblue, we can bring to light the positive benefits exercise, teamwork and mateship have on mental health.” More photos: https://starweeklyphotos. fotomerchant.com Esther Lauaki

Hospital bid wins funding By Sumeyya Ilanbey The people of Melton are one step closer to getting a public hospital after the Labor Party announced it would fund a business plan if re-elected in next month’s state election. Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced on Friday $2.3 million to plan for a public hospital in Toolern precinct, near Melton South. The business case will determine the location, size and range of services a Melton hospital can deliver and how it can link into services at other public hospitals in the western suburbs. But the move has been described by some advocates as “the same old political speak”. “We’ve already upgraded Djerriwarrh Health Services and we’re building new ambulance stations at Bacchus Marsh and Melton,” Ms Hennessy said on Friday. “But there’s more

to do and only Labor will deliver a new 24-hour public hospital for Melton.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said he was delighted with the Labor Party’s commitment to funding a business case and called on the Liberal Party to do the same. The Build Melton Hospital campaign, spearheaded by the council, had called on the parties to commit to fully fund the hospital, but Cr Turner said the business case was a “good first step”. “We were hoping and asking for first, a commitment to Melton; second, a business case

and; third, a commitment before the election to start building,” Cr Turner said. “If we wait for the next election, it’ll be another four years before they commit to start building.” More than 15,000 people have signed a petition calling for a public hospital to be built in Melton. The mayors of five other western suburbs councils have also thrown their support behind Melton’s campaign. The council had lobbied for funding for a feasibility study and a commitment to start construction by July, 2022. Suitable potential land for a hospital has already been identified in the Toolern precinct, near the railway station that’s under construction. Ms Hennessy said the government had started shortlisting possible sites for the new hospital and would most likely acquire the

land through the growth areas infrastructure contribution fund – a levy paid by developers in the state’s outer fringe suburbs. Melton resident Alan Perry and Melton Hospital Group committee member Ian Birchall said that while they acknowledged the commitment, it was “not good enough”. “It’s the same old political speak,” Dr Birchall said. “It’s just going to go on and on for another electoral cycle and we won’t have a hospital started for another 10 years the way they’re talking. “We need a hospital now – we needed it 10 years ago, let alone waiting for another 10 years.” The Greens candidate for the seat of Melton, Harkirat Singh, said his party would commit $3 million to fund the business case. The Liberal Party has not made any announcements about the push for a public hospital in Melton.

Premier plan to unlock rail By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton could get an electrified railway line and a new train station under a re-elected Labor government. Premier Daniel Andrews has pledged $150 million toward a business case for the Western Rail Plan to include a fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat and the full separation of regional and metro train services. It would mean Melton will be serviced by a Metro train. The business case will also investigate the feasibility of additional tracks between Sunshine and the CBD to run extra services, most likely through a new rail tunnel, and the full electrification of the Ballarat and Geelong lines. Unlike the Coalition, which costed its bold regional rail plan, announced recently, at $19 billion, Labor has not announced how much its project could end up costing. If Labor is elected, work on the business case will start next year and be finished by 2022 and the full project delivered by 2032. Mr Andrews said his government was committed to taking cars off the road and reducing travel times. “This planPROVIDING will deliver the transformation that our state needs – electrification of rail lines EXCELLENT out to the west, and fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat, returning country trains to country EYE CARE FOR commuters,” Mr Andrews said. THE LOCAL The monthly train patronage in Melton has grown from 75,000 passengers COMMUNITYthree years ago to 129,000 this year, according to the government’s figures.

“The upgrade of the rail line will allow more people to use public transport to access key employment areas in the CBD and inner Melbourne suburbs.” Western Transport Alliance chairman Jonathon Marsden said while he welcomed the government’s announcement, there needed to be serious investment in the region’s bus services to complement the rail upgrades. “Melton is the fastest growing local government area in Melbourne, but right now less than half of residents there live within walking distance of public transport,” Mr Marsden said. “Improving the train services to Melton and Wyndham Vale will mean more people can leave the car at home to get to work, freeing up the congestion on our roads.”

Electrification of the railway line from Deer Park to Melton could triple its carrying capacity, allowing up to 1500 people to travel on a single train. Melton mayor Bob Turner said electrification of the line had been a “long-standing” priority for the council. “We are excited by this commitment, which would see a dedicated track for our residents, and recognises the need to deliver improved public transport in the city,” Cr Turner said.

Nightmare at Ravenhall By Adam Cooper, The Age One prison officer likened the hours of distressing noises coming from Rebecca’s cell to a horror movie. “Rebecca sounds like The Exorcist over the intercom as she continues to spit and scream,” the guard wrote, and at times other inmates at the women’s prison were given earplugs. Other times Rebecca refused to eat – she lost 50 kilograms in her first seven months in jail – and refused to wash, and her moods varied from anxiety, depression and anger through to paranoia and psychosis. But despite the difficulties Rebecca faced in jail because of her autism spectrum and pervasive developmental disorders, staff at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Ravenhall were largely unable to meet her needs because the prison didn’t have a formal system for caring for women in her situation. And Rebecca was there for 18 months. Investigating Rebecca’s incarceration, Deborah Glass found it “the saddest case I have investigated in my time as Ombudsman” in findings published last week. Jailing the mentally impaired woman for a year and a half because there was “nowhere for her to go” breached her human rights, the state’s Ombudsman found in a report urging more investment in accommodation and support for vulnerable people. Ms Glass said during Rebecca’s stay in prison across 2016 and 2017, the 39-year-old spent up to 23 hours a day in solitary confinement, even after she was found not guilty of criminal charges by way of mental impairment. Rebecca (not her real name) was arrested in 2016 at her parents’ home and charged with breaching an intervention order and resisting police. Without accommodation and given

Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass. (Simon Schluter/The The Age Age)

her risk of reoffending, she was remanded in custody and bail was never an option. She was later found unfit to stand trial and then found not guilty by way of mental impairment. But because authorities could not find her suitable accommodation in the community, she was kept in jail under the guard of officers without the training to properly care for her, and her disability worsened. “She remained in prison simply because there was nowhere for her to go,” Ms Glass said. “While agencies mostly followed procedure,

and in some cases went beyond them in an attempt to provide support, the state failed Rebecca. Her long and damaging stay in prison was a breach of her human rights.” Under Victorian law, people must not be kept in prison unless there is no practicable alternative. In her findings, Ms Glass recommended the winner of November’s state election invest in secure treatment facilities other than prison for people found unfit to stand trial or not guilty by way of mental impairment.

Cash flows for gender fight A new Moorabool council program promoting gender equality at local sports clubs has been given a financial boost. The state government announced more than $180,000 in funding for Macedon Ranges, Moorabool and Hepburn shire programs working to prevent family violence through gender equality. Family Violence Prevention Minister Natalie Hutchins said the money would support councils in their fight against family violence. Moorabool council received $57,000 to deliver a “workforce cultural change program”. The program will support new parents and promote gender equality in local sports clubs. “Ending family violence requires whole of community approach,” Ms Hutchins said. “By investing in prevention programs led by local government we will help stop family violence.” Macedon Ranges Shire received $100,000 to deliver a program that will help staff challenge structures and practices that drive violence against women. Hepburn Shire received $28,000 to help promote gender equity within the council and wider community, and increase the number of women in leadership positions in council. Melton power complaints surge By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton residents are feeling the brunt of power price rises and an increasing number are complaining to the Ombudsman about it. Although overall Melton cases to the Energy and Water Ombudsman decreased by 9 per cent (from 766 to 700) in the past financial year, the number of high bill cases increased by 21 per cent (from 71 to 86) and disconnection cases increased by 13 per cent (78 to 88). Energy and Water Ombudsman Cynthia Gebert said those increases were concerning

and an indication people were struggling to stay connected to electricity, gas and water supplies. “The amount of media and political attention means customers are very aware of electricity prices and gas prices, and they’re consciously thinking about it and whether they think their bills are right,” Ms Gebert said. “I don’t think it explains it all, but it does contribute to people questioning their bills.” There’s been intense scrutiny on power prices in recent years, with politicians and social welfare groups scrambling for ways to

make energy more affordable. Earlier this year, the federal government released the final report into Retail Pricing Information Guidelines, which was aimed at helping customers assess and compare energy plans. The state government announced it would give every Victorian who used the independent Victorian Energy Compare website $50. Ms Gebert said customers should always compare energy plans, choosing one that suits their lifestyle. If customers are unable to pay their bills early, for example, there is no point in signing

up to a plan that rewards early payments, she said. “We really need to work with customers to help them understand how they’re using their energy,” she said. “Obviously we’re really keen to keep people connected and on supply. If they’ve been disconnected, we work to get them back on as soon as possible because it’s an essential service.” The number of complaints received by the Ombudsman from Melton was 5.2 per 1000 people, slightly below the Victorian average of 5.37 complaints.

Julie dives deep for club For 40 years, Julie Walsh has volunteered tirelessly at the Melton Swimming Club. Whether it’s coaching or being on the committee, Ms Walsh has dedicated her life to the sport and community she loves. She’s held every committee role and this year is club secretary. And she said she had no plans to hang up the goggles and retire any time soon. “I still really enjoy watching the kids achieve and have fun,” Ms Walsh said. After being nominated for Swimming Australia’s 2018 Optus Local Legend of the Year, Ms Walsh has now been selected as the Victorian finalist. The awards recognise volunteers at swimming clubs. Ms Walsh says she was humbled about being named a finalist. “I’m still pinching myself that all this is happening,” she said. “I’ve had a couple of certificates [at a local level] but never the

recognition I’ve had this year – it’s quite overwhelming.” The Melton Swimming Club stalwart earlier this year received a Swimming Victoria Volunteer of the Year award. The local legend award winner will be announced at a dinner on Saturday, October 27. Sumeyya Ilanbey

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Mosaic artist Leonie Scott has volunteered with the Bacchus Marsh Arts Council for the past year. She speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey about how she got involved in arts and what it means for her. What’s your connection to Moorabool?

which I did on my own and made a terrible mess of it. I then did a class and started going to that – that was 14 years ago.

I moved here four and a half years ago. I’ve done mosaics for 14 years and I wanted to get into the Bacchus Marsh community – I saw a project the Bacchus Marsh Arts Gallery was running so I did that and found out there was this new gallery in town, and became a committee member shortly after.

How has it changed your life? When you’re stressed, or the pressures too much for you, you get into your mosaics and it’s a definite therapy and it keeps you sane. It takes you into another world of creating and you forget about all the things that are going on in your life.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool?

How important is art?

The peace, the quiet and the people – they’re very lovely. I was living in Footscray … when I stopped working I became very much aware of the traffic and the congestion. I wanted a studio, so I was looking for a place that had a huge shed or a big garage and that’s what I found. I’ve turned my garage here into my studio.

I don’t really have too much to change. The worst part would be parking at The Village shopping centre. The other thing I would like to see is for the council to give us a proper gallery, which would be featured in the main street. Where we are at the moment is great, and it’s slowly being recognised by the locals, but a lot of people still don’t know there’s a gallery in Bacchus Marsh. If we were in a better [location] it could really take off and maybe the local people would support it. We had a fundraiser for the Jane McGrath Foundation and that was so successful, we raised a lot of money.

(Marco De Luca)

What would you change about the area if you could?

At the moment, we’ve got a mosaic and glass exhibition, next month we’ve got the community weaving group exhibition, and after that we have the Christmas sale. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? My own home – it’s just magnificent. I’ve got the most beautiful view and I just love sitting and looking at the view, I really do. Other than

that, I like Lola’s Cafe … and I love the Royal Hotel. I’m in the process of trying all the restaurants to be honest, but it’s not something I do a lot because I’m busy. How did you get involved in mosaics? It happened through my job as a teacher at Victoria University. I just felt like I needed an outlet and I’d always wanted to try mosaics,

Very. For me, it’s the pieces I do and having them in my home. I have one piece and every time I look at it, it brings a real calming effect to me and it just makes me – let’s just say the blood pressure drops. It makes me feel relaxed. Art brings life to your life. The colours, the textures … Artwork is very much like wine – you either like it or your hate it. We all have different tastes so what works for one doesn’t work for the other, but it’s not to say the art is wrong. What’s one thing people would be surprised to find out about you? My marital status – I’m not married and that surprises a lot of people about why I haven’t had a family. It’s just never happened. And people say I’m a good host. The Bacchus Marsh Art Gallery is at The Village, Shop 46/176 Main St, Bacchus Marsh.

Girls are being encouraged to have a night in and raise funds for the Cancer Council. (Supplied)

Staying in for cancer You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t been touched by women’s cancer. Each year, more than 4000 Victorians are diagnosed with a type of breast or gynaecological cancer. In Moorabool, 59 women were diagnosed with breast and 29 with a form of gynaecological (such as cervical, ovarian, vulva and uterine) cancers between 2014 and 2016. And in Melton, this figure was 191 and 77, respectively. To support those women who’ve been diagnosed, and commemorate those who’ve lost their lives, the Cancer Council is encouraging Melton and Moorabool women to host a Girls’ Night In. Running throughout October and November, the event is a way for women to get together and donate what they would have

spent on a night out. Cancer Council Victoria’s acting head of support experience, Emily Wigner, said getting together with friends was a great way to spread awareness and change someone’s life. “Breast and gynaecological cancers touch many lives in one form or another,” Ms Wigney said. “Many of our mothers, our grandmas, daughters, sisters and friends have been affected. Hosting a Girls’ Night In event isn’t only an opportunity to raise much-needed funds for women’s cancers – it can also raise much-needed awareness about early detection and cancer prevention.” To register a Girls’ Night In, visit girlsnightin. com.au or call 1300 656 585. Free green waste this November

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner As my current term as Mayor draws to an end, it’s timely to reflect on some personal highlights from the past twelve months. It’s been a privilege to meet so many wonderful residents in my journey. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed taking part in vibrant celebrations with all; opening art exhibitions, welcoming hundreds of new residents to our community; preserving our heritage, flora and fauna for future generations, and acknowledging the achievements of our local sports men and women, volunteers and young people. I’ve had many opportunities to advocate on behalf of our community, am I’m especially proud of our Build Melton Hospital campaign. Over 17,000 residents have shown their support so far, and Council will continue to advocate for a local hospital until it becomes a reality.

We’ve undertaken a number of major infrastructure projects, including redeveloping Melton Town Centre, duplicating Hume Drive, extending Caroline Springs Leisure Centre, and turning-the-sod on new projects like Fraser Rise and Aintree Community Hubs; Hannah Watts Park, Bill Cahill Reserve, and Arnolds Creek Playspace. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me in the past year. I look forward to working with the next Mayor, my fellow Councillors, Council officers and the community, to create an even brighter future for our community. I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200 to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email at: bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Cambridge Ward

Cr Kathy Majdlik It’s been an incredibly exciting few months in Cambridge ward, with new infrastructure projects receiving funding, and key community facilities getting underway or being completed. The Burnside Community Centre officially opened in early October. This multimillion dollar integrated facility features kindergarten, maternal and child health services, occasional care, new parent groups, playgroups, Early Childhood Intervention and family services, and is a fantastic asset for this community. Council also turned the sod on two outstanding community hubs in Fraser Rise and Aintree, which will feature Maternal and Child Health services, kindergarten and child care programs. Fraser Rise will also offer neighbourhood house services, sporting facilities and links to adjacent schools. Aintree will feature a library kiosk and

full-service kitchen, with links to Frontier Park sporting facilities and local schools. Cambridge ward also featured heavily in the State Government’s recent Growing Suburbs Fund announcement, with Caroline Springs Leisure Centre receiving over $1.05 million to extend the social space at the existing pavilion, and improve kitchen and amenities, while we received $355,000 to construct a playspace at Arbour Boulevard Reserve in Burnside Heights. This redevelopment will include a new play area and picnic facilities; all-weather shelter; path lighting and connections; tree planting and general landscaping to an under-utilised community space. I welcome comments or feedback from residents who wish to contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

And, if the accident wasn’t the driver’s fault, we are very happy to supply a replacement vehicle for the duration of the repair – make sure this is mentioned at the time.” Private work is also carried out at Auto Passion, with honest, down-to-earth quotes given immediately. Bacchus Marsh local raises the roof Just as summer hits its stride by the end of the year, Bacchus Marsh’s Courthouse Hotel will be strutting a roof-top beer garden so good it will rival those popping up all over Melbourne.

H

otel manager Mary Novacic couldn’t be more chuffed. “This is a fabulous addition to the Courthouse and I’m sure it will be the most popular spot in town to have a drink with friends,” Mary says. “It’s all part of an upgrade to our function room, which will double in size. Function attendees will have full access to the undercover beer garden. When it’s not booked for a function, our regular patrons can take advantage of the space on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. “We’re fully expecting it to go gangbusters – people are already booking their functions in anticipation of the opening.” The beer garden isn’t the only thing that’s happening at the Courthouse. The bistro, home to classic pub food, has been given a revamp, with banquette seating and comfy cushions running along banks of picture windows to accompany more traditional seating. It’s a lovely light-filled space, perfect for the whole family. The bistro offers $10 and $15 lunches and $16 two-course senior meals from Monday to Friday, while theme nights run from Monday to Thursday. On Mondays, it’s $14 pasta; Tuesday, $15 parmas; Wednesday, $10 discount for all steaks; and Thursday, $12 burgers. A vegan menu

is available. The upgraded TAB sports bar and lounge has new TVs with channels including Sky, Trackside and Foxsport, and there is keno vision in all pub areas. And while you’re there, why not try the Carlton Draught Tank Beer, an unpasteurised brewery-fresh beer? The Courthouse is the only place in town that has it. Yet another reason to drop into the

Courthouse – and to sign up as a member – is a promotion running until December 13. Members have a chance to win a 14-day Pacific Islands cruise just by spending $20 anywhere in the pub then swiping their membership card at the kiosk. Mary loves the wonderful old pub and it shows. “We believe in making every customer feel special, whether they spend $5 or

$500,” she says. “We appreciate out team so much – without their good spirits and work ethic, we wouldn’t be successful. It’s that simple.” The Courthouse Hotel, 116 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. Opens 9am-noon Monday-Tuesday; 9am-1am Wednesday-Saturday; and 10am-11pm Sunday. Inquiries: 5367 2086

Care call for Cup weekend driving On the Melbourne Cup long weekend, Victoria Police will be out in force for Operation Furlong, which will run from Friday, November 2, to Tuesday, November 6.

(Joe Mastroianni)

R

oad policing adviser Sergeant Marty Wallace says Operation Furlong will be conducted throughout Victoria using all available personnel. He says the Melbourne Cup holiday weekend provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments, so it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours and don’t drive if they are tired,” Sergeant Wallace says. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) Speed cameras will be in use in known high-collision locations. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members and the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to

SERGEANT MARTY WALLACE

loved ones. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says the entire community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes,” he says. “Speeding affects both the risk of a

crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. “Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. “Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road – the onus is always on the

driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. “Before embarking on any driving trips, drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.” The community is being asked to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.

DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!

Storage King puts customers first Sally Gardner, manager of Storage King Melton, believes working for Australia’s leading storage outfit has changed her for the better.

‘S

torage King in Melton is such a lively place to work, with so many ways to help customers with their storage needs,” Sally says. “It’s certainly brought me out of my shell, talking to all different kinds of people and business owners who want easy solutions. I love my job.” The storage facility, going strong for the past 20 years, recently introduced Parcel King, a new service designed for customer convenience. “Anyone wanting to send parcels, pallets or containers locally, interstate and internationally can now arrange that through us. “We can organise a courier to collect the item from a customer’s house and get it sent out. “Two obvious advantages are that we have no maximum weight limit, and we can set up local businesses with their own login details to arrange regular deliveries and track their progress.” What else does the Melton business offer? Self-storage Long or short-term storage in varying sizes is available for residential and commercial clients. Units are alarmed and the site is monitored around the clock. Sally is available for emergencies all hours.

Removalist service Storage King organises a truck and qualified professionals to safely move household and business goods. The business has the expertise to make this challenging experience as painless as possible.

Deer Park born and bred, Sally says while the storage business is run professionally and according to strict protocols, it also treats customers as “part of the family’”. “I’ve watched the expansion of Melbourne’s west over the years, but what never changes is people’s desire for exceptional customer service. “I’m old-school when it comes to looking after clients. This is definitely the most important aspect for me, as it is for my assistant Archie who has extensive

experience in looking after customers. “Archie and I are both Jills of all trades so if something is needed to make the Storage King experience a success for our clients, we will get it done.” Storage King Melton, 9-10 Reserve Road, Melton. Total car care? Dan’s the man … Since Daniel Stewart took ownership of Melton Car Tint three years ago, he’s refined the business and implemented changes that he believes best cater for the needs of motorists in his community.

O

ne of the changes is that the business now trades under the dual names of Dunlop Super Dealer and Melton Car Tint, reflecting the company’s specialties aside from the VACC A-grade certified workshop facility. So what’s on offer at this dynamic business? The workshop: Manned by mechanics who can make any car hum and know just about everything about tyres, wheels, brakes and servicing, the workshop is equipped with laser-guided technology for wheel alignments/balancing. The crew can turn its hand to servicing and repairs of all types of vehicles, from European and American to high-horsepower rides and hotrods. The VACC accreditation guarantees services are done to manufacturer specs, using genuine or appropriate-quality parts, and warranties will be maintained. Daniel says: “We reckon people should bring their car in for a tune-up because it makes a real difference.” Tyres: Home to a wide-ranging selection of mag wheels, the tyre department also has all the best-known brands such as Dunlop, Goodyear, Kumho, BF Goodrich and Cooper.

Window tinting/other: Tinting is carried out on all vehicles, as well as homes and offices. With summer about to sizzle and holiday time fast approaching, now is a good time to think about getting car windows tinted to make driving a more comfortable experience. The business is also a stockist and installer of Century batteries. Daniel is thoroughly enjoying the diversity of work that comes through his door. “It can be giving a sleek car the darkest legal window tint and fitting tyres that best suit the car and usage to correcting wheel balance to make a car drive better and use less fuel,” he says. “It’s always rewarding to receive customers’ thanks and knowing they’re satisfied.” A final big tick – there are easy payment terms for approved customers and to suit all budgets. Dunlop Super Dealer and Melton Total Car Care, 163-165 High Street, Melton. Opens 8am-5pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 9746 0088 or see more details on Facebook. Djerriwarrh proud to be NDIS provider As life expectancy and population continues to increase in Victoria, so too does the number of people living with disabilities. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, 18.4 per cent of the Victorian population is currently living with a disability.

A

disability can occur at any time in life, and while some may be obvious, others are hidden. Djerriwarrh Health Services has been a proud provider of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) nursing and allied health services to the Moorabool community since 2017, and since October 1, it is also now an NDIS provider to the residents of Melton and Caroline Springs. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott says the organisation is eager to provide greater access to these life-changing disability services and support systems. “We recognise the challenges faced by people with mental and physical disabilities in our communities, and the need for support services to improve their independence and outcomes in life,” Ms Scott says. “While NDIS aims to provide assistance and access to a range of mainstream and community services, we know it can take time to adjust to a new scheme and understand what’s involved. Our dedicated team is here to help answer any questions and support residents through the process.” Djerriwarrh Health Services is a registered NDIS provider of therapy supports and nursing services which

are delivered by both its allied health and nursing teams. Services include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, dietetics, speech pathology, podiatry, counselling and continence assessments. The Health Service provides services across its various locations, but also has the flexibility to provide home-based support services such as occupational therapy home assessments. In addition to securing access to health services, NDIS supports people with disabilities to build the skills and capabilities they need to participate in the community and employment by providing education services, aged care systems and public housing. Checklist for NDIS eligibility. Are you? • Under 65 years of age. • A permanent Australian resident or an Australian citizen. • Disability is likely to be life-long and substantially impacts how you manage everyday activities. Those not eligible for funding may still be able to access disability and mainstream support available in the community and at Djerriwarrh Health Services. Djerriwarrh Health Services, 29-35 Grant Street, Bacchus Marsh. Inquiries: 9747 7609 or visit djhs.org.au

An invitation to fantastic sleep Forty Winks in Highpoint’s Homemaker Centre is once again hosting its annual VIP night – with all mattresses half price and 30 per cent off the entire furniture range.

S

tore owners Helen and Tony are excited about the event – to be held on Tuesday, October 30, from 5-8pm – and the opportunities it provides to offer customers such huge discounts. “While customers are browsing for exactly the right mattress or piece of bedroom furniture they might have been waiting for, they can enjoy some canapes with a beverage – what a nice way to shop,” Helen says. “We’ll also have our sleep specialists in attendance to assist with purchases and offer guidance in choosing the right mattress. And a major prize will be drawn at 8pm.” Helen understands that with so many mattresses available, choosing the right one can be a challenge. “That’s why we now have the new Bed Match technology to take out the guess work,” she says. “Backed by the largest sleep study, Bed Match uses technology to profile a customer and identify the mattress best suited to their personal postural support and pressure relief needs. “Customers won’t have to navigate this technology alone – our well-trained sleep specialists will guide them through the process.” Following Forty Winks’ partnership with Qantas frequent flyer program, store members can earn points on all their shopping and, on the VIP night, points will be doubled.

The store stocks a large range of products and high-quality mattress brands. “We also now have a Prestige Room, which displays a selection of luxury mattresses from Silent Partner, featuring Versailles, Chateau and Provence,” Helen says. “The hand-stitched luxury range from King Koil is also on the floor.” All sizes, comfort levels and price points are represented in-store, with each mattress from leading brands backed by solid warranties and guarantees. Store manager Michelle and sales consultants Phil and Nicholas have a load of knowledge about mattresses and bedroom furniture and will happily offer their expertise. The entire team is passionate about sleep science and knows what it takes to deliver a good night’s sleep. “Dr David Hillman, the director of the Sleep Health Foundation, says just like smoking, obesity or over-drinking can cause real harm, so, too, does lack of good sleep,” Helen says. “We encourage anyone wanting to improve their sleep to come in and discover what relief there can be in having the right mattress.” Forty Winks, 4/179 Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong. Opens 9am-5.30pm Monday-Thursday; 9am-8pm Friday; 9am-5pm Saturday; and 10am-5pm Sunday. Inquiries: 9317 9222

Engaging Melton children in early learning When Michelle Clarke and her husband Dean, took over as new owners of the Early Learning Kinders childcare centres in Melton and Melton South, their aim was to engage children in a love of learning, in a safe and welcoming environment.

B

oth centres now offer families learning programs that are guided by the child’s interests, and extended by an events calendar which includes a range of excursions, incursions, community events, and cultural celebrations throughout the year to facilitate an inclusive understanding of the wider world. The centres are overseen by two passionate and well experienced centre managers, with Katrina DeGruyther heading up the centre in Coburns Road, while Amy Stewart leads the centre in Unitt Street. Katrina says both centres take a proactive approach to community engagement, designed to give children great learning experiences and allow the community to see dynamic childcare in action. “We recently took the children to a Welcome to Country event held at council offices,” Amy says. “The children loved it. It was a wonderful chance for them to see other ways of doing things and they were very excited to get a pot plant to take back to the centre to plant and watch grow. It now has pride of place in our foyer.” “The children will also be involved in this year’s Djerriwarrh Festival, marching in the parade in front of townspeople and families. This nurtures a real sense of belonging and provides possibly their first taste of being an integral part of Melton’s rhythms.” The Unitt Street centre, which is opposite St Dominic’s has great spaces including a chook house and a vegie and herb garden.

“Our children check and collect the eggs themselves daily, placing them in a basket for families to take home,” Amy says. “This teaches them about the value of caring for animals, as well as demonstrates generosity.” The Coburns Road centre also enjoys a large natural environment with lots of trees and open space in which to play and explore. As sister centres, both share the same philosophies, with flexible session hours, to deliver quality care and education for children aged six weeks to six years, including a fully accredited kindergarten program at each centre. Healthy and nutritious meals are prepared daily. “Next time you see a conga line of

children walking the streets of Melton, they could well be ours,” Katrina says. It’s all about a well-rounded education, having fun and sharing in new experiences at our centres.”

At the end of a long silver birch-lined driveway ending in a circle, the Federation-style house perches on a battleaxe block so superb that it becomes a major asset – like having one’s own private estate. Garden beauty meets the eye at every turn and only gets more magical once out back. It has wow – so let’s start there.

First, the solar-heated salt pool. It’s rimmed with stunning Turkish travertine, while decking flows under a pavilion housing a giant swinging day bed. A curtain of water cascades from the pavilion’s roof into the pool where coloured lights create a fairyland at night. Off to the side is a large concrete-floored summerhouse, adjoining which is a Jacuzzi under shelter. It’s a dream set-up for entertainers and every family member. Gorgeous formal gardens, tempered with dense plantings, take a turn into a natural bushy feel down back where one leafy section is aptly named the ‘wedding corner’.

Sweeping lawns dotted with specimen trees, a great chook shed and run, a vegie garden, secure dog run, many fruit and olive trees, and a Colorbond shed accessed via a driveway through side gates add even more lifestyle ingredients. The immaculately presented house has entry to a tiled walkway where, on the left, a dual-entry open lounge room has a box bay window seat and charcoal designer drapes. Opposite is the large main bedroom with walk-through doored robes and an en suite with Tassie oak vanity, the same timber forming all cabinetry. Double doors farther along open to a

fitted bedroom or study. The other two fitted bedrooms (each with split-system) are down a hallway, shared with main bathroom, separate toilet and storage-rich laundry. The dining zone and gracious light-filled lounge room (split-system) both have french doors to a giant pergola, sitting between house and freestanding double garage. The large kitchen has stacks of Tassie oak storage, an island bench and all the mod-cons. This property is truly one of the jewels in Brookfield’s crown … don’t miss it. Looking to buy a new home? Start saving now Young Melburnians looking to buy their first home in the city’s cheapest suburbs will likely spend at least five years saving for a deposit, a new report shows. Domain Group analysed entry-level house prices in the city’s most affordable areas, and estimated the amount of time required to save a 20 per cent deposit, using average wage data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. A dual-income couple aged between 25 and 34, who were each saving one-fifth of their post-tax income, would need to save for six years to come up with a $116,500 deposit for a property priced at $582,500, the report found. The city’s cheapest local government area to buy a house was Melton, which takes in Caroline Springs, Toolern Vale and new suburb estates such as Rockbank and Fraser Rise. An entry-level house costs about $424,000, and the report estimated a couple would spend four years and three months saving the $84,800 required for a deposit. Couples looking to buy in the western growth corridor of Wyndham, where affordable houses cost about $490,000, would need to put away money for five years. And in Casey, Frankston, Whittlesea, Brimbank and Greater Dandenong, it would take closer to six years. Entry-level property prices were calculated based on the 25th percentile of recent sales data. The most affordable place within 10 kilometres of the city was Maribyrnong,

where property hunters face 7½ years of saving to buy a $752,000 house, or 3½ years to buy a $360,000 apartment. At the other end of the scale, it would take the average couple 16 years to save a deposit for a $1.6 million house in

Boroondara. Domain data scientist Nicola Powell said the time required to save a deposit for the average entry-level property in Melbourne had ballooned by eight months in the past year.

Melton has added some extra midfield class to help it go one step further in the Ballarat Football League. After a surprise grand final appearance this year, the Bloods wasted no time in adding some talent to their squad and have already signed the core of their playing group. The Bloods last week also announced the signing of Shaun Campbell. Campbell has had an extensive football career in both Victoria and interstate. He has played in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL). Closer to home, Campbell won the Central Highlands Football League best and fairest award in his one year with Ballan in 2015. Most recently he has been playing coach at the Wagga Tigers and he coached the side to the 2016 premiership. After relocating back to Melbourne, Campbell has decided to join the Bloods and focus on playing. Bloods football manager Brad Jamison said a midfielder was at the top of their recruiting list. “The coaching staff identified that another midfielder with a bit of experience and leadership would be beneficial to the team and Shaun brings those attributes to the club, he said. “Additionally, having watched a few of his games online, his ability to win contested footy and his work rate really stood out.

Melton made it three from three with a fine win against Fitzroy Victoria in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Facing another undefeated side, the Melton players made the most of playing on their home green. While they weren’t able to blow Fitzroy Victoria out of the water, the Melton players did enough to claim all four rinks and an 89 (18)-76 (0) win. Melton skip Conrad Dawson said there was a massive buzz around the club. “It was a good test for us and everyone was happy we could get over the line, he said. “We got away from them early. They are a quality side and they pegged us back towards the end. “One of the rinks was delayed and it worked out they needed nine shots from four ends. “We kept our fingers crossed and bowled tightly. Melton is one of two teams undefeated after three rounds. Melton is sitting in second place behind Moonee Valley, which has 52 points compared to Melton’s 50. Dawson said they couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. “Last season, we got five wins, he said. “Now we’re hoping something special is happening for us. “The last two games we’ve got maximum points, which is huge for us. Melton will this week face Brunswick, which will also be coming off a big win. Melton’s third side also came away with a victory on Saturday. The club’s second side lost, while fixtures for the fourth and fifth sides were washed out. In Central Highlands Bowls Division top

SPORT Titans face form slide

Dismal start for Darley

By Tara Murray It was a bad day at the office for the North Western Titans in Baseball Victoria’s Summer League division 3 competition on Sunday. After showing encouraging signs this season, the Titans returned to some of last year’s inconsistent form against Ormond Glenhuntly-Blue on Sunday at MacPherson Park and lost 19-5. Titans playing coach Danny Hymes said it was not a good day. The Titans led early before Ormond Glenhuntly ran away with an easy win. “It was the worst game we’ve had all year,” Hymes said. “We were playing against a team that is second. We were in the game until the fourth innings and then went back to what we did last year. “We had one bad innings and that killed us. They scored five or six runs in one innings and blew us away. “It’s a day we want to forget.” Hymes said the most frustrating issue was it was their mistakes that let Ormond Glenhuntly take control of the game. He said they let themselves down and injuries hadn’t helped their cause. He said Danny Taylor and Kyle Newman were the best in the loss. Hymes said excluding last weekend’s match, they were happy with their progress. The Titans sit fifth with one win from their first four games. He said they needed a bit of luck to turn more of those results into wins. “We’ve been playing really well,” he said. “We won last week and we’ve been in the other games and are feeling comfortable with where the standard is. “We think we’ve caught up a bit compared to last season and I’m a lot more confident we can make finals. “We’ve been more consistent.” This week they face top side St Kilda. Hymes said they needed to get some hits and make the most of their opportunities if they are a chance against the Saints. The women’s side remains without a win, but continues to show signs of improvement in division 3. On Saturday they lost to Cheltenham Rustlers, 18-6. In round one, the scoreline between the two teams was 24-1. Hymes said it was good to see the women’s side having fun. “Within three weeks they’ve improved,” he said. “There’s a lot of enjoyment and that’s the main aim for the first year, along with gaining experience.”

Darley’s nightmare start to the Ballarat Cricket Association season has continued with a third straight loss. After struggling with the bat in the first two rounds, the Lions’ woes continued against East Ballarat. The Lions were bowled out for just 118 in the last over. Lions captain-coach Michael Alexander said it wasn’t good enough. “It’s the same story, we batted poorly,” he said. “You can’t be competitive with totals like that and we were never in the hunt. “We couldn’t get partnerships going and when we did, our best two partnerships ended with run outs. “We were giving up wickets with silly decisions.” Ryan Ali top scored with 44 at the top of the order, with only two other batsmen reaching double figures. East Ballarat had little trouble getting the runs, making 2-121 with more than 20 overs remaining. Dayle Locke and Mitchell Ward were the wicket takers for the Lions. Alexander said they have to turn their batting around if they are to rescue their season. He said the issues were mental ones, not technique. “We’ve being doing a lot of talking trying to rectify it,” he said. “There’s 14 games this season, which gives a little bit more grace.” To add to their woes, the Lions are still missing their two imports. Alexander said they were unsure when they would arrive. All-rounders Danza Hyatt and Hasitha Wickramasinghe are expected to boost the Lions’ batting and bowling. “It’s still in the hands of immigration.” The Lions were also without former captain-coach Heath Pritchard and Alexander said they did not know when they would get him back. “He was good to have in the middle order to add an experienced player,” he said. “Unfortunately he got injured. It’s a wait and see how his body is.” Buninyong, Ballarat-Redan, Mount Clear and Brown Hill were the other winners on Saturday. The Lions this week face Brown Hill. Danny Taylor was one of the better players for the North Western Titans on Sunday. (Shawn Smits)

Lose one, win one as Melton Centrals eye finals role Melton Centrals had a mixed double header weekend in Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 competition. Centrals faced St Anthonys and Greenvale Kangaroos, both at Blackwood Drive Reserve. In the first game, against local rival the Saints, Centrals fell three runs short of victory. The Saints made 1-118 on the back of 50 from Amanda Quirk and 42 not out from Jacqueline Haffenden. Centrals finished 2-116 from their overs, giving the Saints victory. The Centrals later accounted for the Kangaroos. They made 3-135 before restricting the Kangaroos to 5-93. Centrals captain-coach Candace Hulett said the side was showing signs of improvement since it made its debut 12 months ago. “Most of the girls have come back from last year and a couple of young girls have joined the 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 23, 2018

old faces,” she said. “Returning players are a key and we are growing our squad, which is good.” Hulett said Rebecca Bonnici was starting to exhibit some fine hitting power, while the Keenan sisters, Tara, Kylie and Erin, were showing the benefits of having a full season under their belts. The most experienced player in the side, Hulett said she hoped she could step back to allow other players opportunities to shine. Hulett said that with their improvement, Centrals were hoping for more wins and even a finals berth. They currently have a 2-2 record. Last season they won eight games across the one-day and T20 competitions. With changes to the competition structure this year, several of the stronger teams are playing in a higher grade. “With the way the fixture is, hopefully there isn’t so many one-sided matches and hopefully

some last-over thrillers,” she said. “That’s more exciting for the girls. “Certainly, the goal of the team is finals and everyone is on board for that goal. Fingers crossed that happens.” In other results, St Anthonys split its matches, losing to Gisborne in its second after beating Melton Centrals in the first. The Saints fell seven runs short of victory, making 4-108 in reply to Gisborne’s 0-114. Caroline Springs lost its matches, both against more experienced clubs. The Falcons were bowled out for 33 against Coburg 2. Coburg made the runs with ease, finishing with 1-37. Against Geelong 2, the Falcons made 4-87 in reply to Geelong’s 2-105. Lisa Alexander top-scored for the Falcons with 38 at the top of the order. Tara Murray

Saints innings rained out, but draw is a fitting outcome St Anthonys had to settle for a draw as rain brought an early end to its match against Rupertswood in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s Johnstone Shield Districts firsts. The only Johnstone Shield match to get underway on Saturday was hit by a heavy downpour in the fifth over of the Saints’ innings. The players left the field and did not return. Earlier, Rupo had made 8-165. Saints captain-coach Cam Clayton said the Rupertswood score was about par, although at one stage it was 7-55. “They were in trouble really early on,” he said. “The two guys who had the runs last week for Rupo were out for ducks, so it looked good for us. “Myself and Warren Haffenden opened the bowling before John Jensen came on and got

three wickets and Jason Orr got a couple. We thought that target was about right.” Jensen was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-25. The Saints were 1-18 in their fifth over when the umpires called off the game. Clayton said they were happy to come away with the draw. “We fielded the last 40 minutes in the rain – the umpires kept us out there,” he said. “They called it off in our innings. We were disappointed we didn’t get the chance to chase it down, but it could have backfired. “We could have been given an hour to get the runs and could have been bowled out. We’re happy to get the draw.” Clayton said they had been keen to test themselves against Rupertswood, with both sides entering the match undefeated.

Clayton said there was a buzz around the club as it looked to go one better than last season, when it finished runners-up in the then B-grade competition. At one stage, the Saints were going to be promoted during the off season, but a number of changes meant they stayed in the same competition. “The boys are still positive even though we didn’t go up,” Clayton said. “We have the chance to win a flag and go up now. “The vibe is still good.” Clayton said the club expected its top four sides to be thereabouts come finals. He said it was exciting for the club to have a fifth side, a father-and-son team, while their women’s side had improved rapidly. Bacchus Marsh has moved three points clear

Lions’ depth put to test By Tara Murray It was a mixed weekend for Bacchus Marsh Lions in the Country Basketball League. After a massive first-up win, the Lions were tested at the weekend against two sides which claimed their conference premierships last year. It was a tough match-up against Horsham Hornets on Saturday night. The Lions were missing five of their top eight players to make the task even harder. They were in the game until half-time, trailing by seven points at the main break, before fading and losing 101-57. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben said the result was what they expected with so many players missing from the side. “We were missing four of five starters,” he said. “We were able to stay in it until half-time and then struggled to keep with them. “We ran out of legs. It was always a matter of when the floodgates would open. “If we played against them with our full team come finals time, I think we could give a good account of ourselves.” Billy Feben top scored with 17 points, while Max Beaumont scored 12 points. Jeff Feben said Beaumont had started the season well and was pushing the starters. He said Daniel Jackson did a good job at playing at the five, with both their centres missing. With their full squad to pick from on Sunday it was a different result against the Colac Kookas. They led all day to claim a 78-50 win. Feben said he was impressed with that performance. “We had a full quota,” he said. “It was a super effort again. We had all our starters back and had fresh legs and had two centres. “Our running game with fast transition was going really well. “Kirky [Jordan Kirk] was fantastic and set up the win.” Kirk top scored with 20 points, while Billy Feben made 14 points and gave away several assists and Diquan Williams chipped in with 12 points, as all but one player hit the scoreboard. Jeff Feben said they were starting to see connections several players have with each other on court. While happy with the result, Feben said it wasn’t all positive as the Lions lost the last quarter. “Stuff we have to be aware of is things like the last quarter,” he said. “While it was great to get minutes into everyone, we have to pick up the drop in scoring.” In a bonus, the Lions added another centre to their squad last week. The Lions have another double header this weekend, this time on the road. They face Bellarine Storm on Saturday night and Geelong Supercats on Sunday. “It’ll give us a gauge of where we are sitting,” Feben said.

on top of the McIntyre Cup ladder with a win against Sunbury United. The Bulls made 6-210 off their overs, with Milinda Sepala (91) and James Lidgett (71) leading the way. Damien Edwards took 4-28 for United. United put up a good run chase, but fell short by finishing 9-187. Mark Koutroubas top-scored with 54. In other games, Romsey defeated Woodend. Woodend made 158 with Brett Warner top-scoring with 38. Romsey made 6-159 in reply, with Chris Burkett making 41 at the top of the order. Wallan and Sunbury had to settle for a draw after rain stopped play, while Diggers Rest Bulla and Gisborne didn’t get on the field. Tara Murray

Melton’s match against Hoppers Crossing will be played as a one-dayer after rain washed out day one of their Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west match on Saturday. The association decided play would go ahead in the top two grades, but only two matches in the first XI competition got under way with rain and wet grounds preventing play in other locations, including MacPherson Park in Melton.

Cricket

Eynesbury Eagles could have a star on their hands in Stella Blaikie. Playing in the Eagles under-12a green team in the Melton Junior Cricket Association on Friday night, Blaikie took a hat-trick in just her 23rd match. In her two overs on Friday night, Blaikie finished with the figures 3-6.

EDFL

Hillside will be without two key players for next year’s Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Westmeadows and Tullamarine announced during the week that Sharks players Mitch Church and Joel Bonnici were joining their clubs next season. Church spent just one season at the Sharks, while Bonnici is a former captain of the Sharks.

VTCA

Victorian Turf Cricket Association teams were given the day off on Saturday. The association cancelled all matches on Saturday morning, due to the wet weather. The top three divisions will likely have their one-day matches rescheduled, while the fourth and fifth divisions two-day matches will now become one-dayers.

VTCA

Sydenham-Hillside Cricket Club won the grand final rematch against Westmeadows in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Women’s game at Willowbrook Reserve. The Storm made 5-116 from its overs and Catherine Morrow made 40 not out. Westmeadows made 5-85 in reply. The Storm sits on top of the ladder after two rounds.
