Spooks hit a sweet spot The spooky season is here. Watergardens Town Centre is inviting families to take part in ghoulish fun with the return of its Halloween Spooktacular. Tricks and treats will flow in all their ghostly glory on Wednesday, October 31. Watergardens centre manager Joe Galea said the occasion was growing in popularity. “We are extremely proud to see the event grow year after year … it offers such a unique and fun experience for the whole family,” he said. Creepy and kooky one-day-only Halloween specials will be available, but two “zombies” could cross customers’ paths throughout the day. The town square will be transformed into a haunted cemetery covered in eerie skeletons, scary spiders and giant pumpkins. Families are being encouraged to dust off their broomsticks and wands, with the Spooktacular calling for families to don their creepiest costumes, with prizes for the best. There will be heaps of candy, with centre-wide trick or treating running from noon. Another event highlight will be an interactive space. “We have thoroughly enjoyed our preparations to bring Halloween to the centre and we hope that all visitors will enjoy the safe environment we have created,” Mr Galea said. Labor contender steps up By Esther Lauaki A former paramedics union boss has answered Labor’s emergency call after the party dropped its candidate for the safe seat of Melton. Steve McGhie, retired state secretary of the Ambulance Employees Union, will contest the seat of Melton after Justin Mammarella abandoned the race with four weeks to go. Labor state secretary Samuel Rae confirmed last Thursday that Mr Mammarella had withdrawn for “family reasons”. The shock exit comes days after a Labor election pledge of $2.3 million towards a case study for a public hospital in Melton. “The Labor Party will quickly pre-select

another candidate,” Mr Rae said at the time. “We are confident that Labor will provide the electorate of Melton with a strong and committed candidate who, if given the honour, will continue Labor’s strong track record of investment in schools, hospitals, roads and public transport.” Mr McGhie, who lives 75 kilometres away from Melton in Buninyong, confirmed last week he would be contesting the seat for Labor. “They obviously needed someone to stand up after the other candidate decided to withdraw so I put my hand up for it,” he said. In September last year, Mr Mammarella’s

father Robert, a former office manager for embattled Western Metro MP Khalil Eideh, was embroiled in a Labor printing scandal. Labor whistleblowers alleged Parliament was excessively billed for printing and the money was instead used to pay for ALP branch stacking. Melbourne printer F&M Printing was raided by Victorian police over the scandal at that time. Justin Mammarella could not be contacted for comment last week. Opposition MP Michael O’Brien called for a full explanation of why Mr Mammarella was no longer a candidate.

“I don’t think the few line statement put out by the Labor Party today cuts it,” Mr O’Brien said. “I think Daniel Andrews needs to explain the real reasons why his candidate for Melton has stepped down just 30 days from the election.” Melton is held by Don Nardella, who has sat on the cross benches in State Parliament since he resigned from the ALP in 2017 after being caught rorting his parliamentary second home allowance. Mr Nardella will not be contesting Melton next month but the seat is expected to remain safe Labor territory in November’s poll. – with The Age

Sobering crash figures released By Charlene Macaulay A high-speed head-on crash in Point Cook on Christmas Eve accounted for three of 15 fatalities on the west’s roads over the past financial year. RoadSafe Westgate’s annual report shows that 834 people were injured – including 205 seriously injured – in road collisions across Wyndham, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Melton in 2017-18.

More than a third of crashes took place on Wyndham roads (311 road collisions), up 7 per cent from the previous year. However, Hobsons Bay (151 collisions), Maribyrnong (154) and Melton (218) all recorded accident decreases from the previous 12 months. Four motorcyclists were among the fatalities, including a motorcyclist who veered from a Kurunjang Road and struck a tree. Other road fatalities over the past financial year included a two-car, head-on collision

along Ballan Road in Wyndham Vale which resulted in the death of one of the drivers, and a pedestrian on a mobility scooter who died when they were struck by a car while crossing the road on Market Road in Newport. Westgate Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty Wallace said distracted motorists and pedestrians had caused a number of collisions, many ending in serious injuries and fatalities. “Targeted road user behaviours continue to be drink and drug driving, unauthorised

drivers, distraction driving – including mobile phones – and seat belts,” Sergeant Wallace said. Meanwhile, police impounded a total 647 cars in 2017 – 306 of those from Wyndham – and are on track to impound 700 cars by year’s end. Jim Giddings from road safety advocacy group RoadSafe Westgate added: “we still have a long way to go to reduce the over-representation of young drivers involved in road crashes”.

Volunteers with a poppy passion Caroline Springs RSL volunteers will be out in force for their annual poppy drive. RSL membership officer Peter Burquest said the drive enabled the sub-branch to remember those who served, as well as connect with the community. “Remembrance Day is a time to reflect on those who have served and those who gave

their life for the country to prosper,” he said. “It’s also time to thank those who are still serving and pray for their safety during their deployments.” Volunteers will be at the Caroline Springs, Taylors Hill and Watervale shopping centres and Bunnings Warehouse Caroline Springsin the lead-up to Remembrance Day,

November 11. Mr Burquest asked the community to give generously. “We’d love to see members of the public, our many schools and businesses in the region support the campaign when you see the volunteers out there selling poppies,” he said. Tate Papworth

Construction on the Ballarat line upgrade is ramping up in December. Coaches will replace trains between December 8-16, while more than 300 crew members work around the clock at Maddingley and Bacchus Marsh. Regional Rail Revival director Mark Havryluk said work on train stabling at Maddingley will continue and should be operational from early 2019. The line’s existing stabling at Bacchus Marsh will be removed upon its completion. “The new stabling has room to store six VLocity trains and will be a key part of enabling more services to run on the Ballarat line,” Mr Havryluk said. “Removing the existing stabling will prepare for major upgrades at Bacchus Marsh station, including building a new platform and pedestrian overpass for a more accessible station for passengers.” While trains are not running, new tracks will be laid at key points along the line between Caroline Springs station and Melton, and earthworks for the Millbrook and Ballan passing loops will continue. Construction will begin on new platforms at Rockbank station, where a new accessible overpass will be lifted into place as part of the station’s rebuild. Mr Havryluk said while disruption had been minimised as much as possible, some construction could only take place while trains were not running to keep workers and passengers safe. Passengers are urged to plan ahead while coaches replace trains and allow 45 minutes’ extra travel time. Information is available at www.vline. com.au or call 1800 800 007. Esther Lauaki

Bridge crash driver guilty A bus driver who smashed into the notorious Montague Street bridge in South Melbourne has been found guilty of causing serious injuries to six of his passengers. Jack Aston, 55, was found guilty of six charges of negligently causing serious injury earlier this month following a two-week trial in the County Court. Aston was driving a 3.6-metre-high Gold Bus Ballarat coach on February 22, 2016, when he crashed into the bridge – which has a three-metre clearance – at 56km/h. The force of the impact pushed the top of the bus back to the fifth row of seats. The passengers – four women and two men – who had been at a tourism conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, suffered injuries including head and spinal fractures, broken collarbones and facial lacerations. Eight other passengers were on the bus. Aston was also seriously injured. Prosecutors argued Aston failed to take heed of five warning signs dotted over the 290 metres before the bridge, didn’t see a sensor on the road that triggered a red flashing light if it detected high vehicles and missed a sign on the bridge itself. A sign on the bus dashboard indicated the vehicle was 3.8 metres high, the jury heard. After the verdict, Judge Bill Stuart granted Aston bail for him to return to court in December for a pre-sentence hearing. The trial was told Aston was on his third job of the day soon after 10am, having begun his shift picking up V/Line train passengers and transporting them to Melbourne. He had never previously driven along Montague Street, the court heard, and his lawyers questioned if he received adequate training and assistance from his employer.

The bus crash at Montague Street bridge. (Supplied)

Gold Bus Ballarat’s sister company, Bacchus Marsh Coaches, had a bus crash into the Montague Street bridge in 2006, but no change in policy for drivers to avoid the area was formally written down after the earlier crash. Bacchus Marsh Coaches and Gold Bus Ballarat are owned by the same umbrella

company, the court heard, and at times share policies, buses and drivers, but they are based at different depots. Aston, an experienced driver, began working for Gold Bus Ballarat in 2013.

Headspace opens its doors Young people facing mental health issues will have another service to turn to at the newly opened Headspace in Melton. Victorian senator Jane Hume this week launched the centre which will support 12 to 25-year-olds across the key areas of mental health, related physical health, social and vocational support and alcohol and other drug use. Melton centre manager Dr Teresa Sedgley said the centre was already popular. “We had well over 100 referrals waiting for us from local health services when we started, and we’re filling our appointment book as fast as we can open up new space,” Dr Sedgley said. “It really shows the level of support and need there has been for a service like this in Melton, and we’re thrilled to be part of such as strong local community.” Health figures show Melton has the highest rates of psychological distress of any local government area in Victoria, with 20 per cent of people reporting high or very high psychological distress – nearly double the state average. Cr Sophie Ramsey said Headspace would make a real difference to youth mental health in the region. “We’re a fast-growing, young municipality and we know that high rates of young people in our city face a number of mental health risks,” Cr Ramsey said. Melton is one of 10 new Headspace services across Australia. Esther Lauaki

Daughter’s aid saves dad By Tate Papworth When 12-year-old Annalise Vella found her father collapsed and covered in blood she remained calm and let her first-aid training come to the fore. It saved her father’s life. Rodney Vella was working on a car in the shed at the Melton family home in September when he was injured. “I was using a five-inch grinder, which was in my right hand,” he said. “It slipped across the left and cut my wrist through the tendons and the main artery. “I passed out for about 90 minutes, bleeding to death on the shed floor. “I woke up cold and shivering, saw the cut and immediately put a rag over it. I lost about two and a half litres of blood.” Mr Vella said he managed to stagger out of the shed and towards the house. He reached the pergola and collapsed again. It was then Annalise sprang into action. “Annalise was on the phone to her mum at the time and saw me. So she immediately hung up and called an ambulance,” Mr Vella said. “She was so calm throughout the entire thing. She put me into the recovery position and spoke incredibly clearly to the operator. “She saved my life.” As if fate had played a hand, Annalise had undertaken a first-aid course at Mackellar Primary School two weeks before the

accident. Mr Vella said his story proved the worth of such courses. “Annalise put all her training into play,” he said. “If she wasn’t home, I wouldn’t be here to tell the story.

“Her knowledge saved my life and I think stories like mine are a good case to make first-aid courses compulsory in schools.” Four weeks after the accident, Mr Vella is on his way to recovery, but he says there are a few hurdles ahead. “My progress is on schedule at the moment, which is great,” he said. “I’ll probably only get 70 per cent movement back in my hand, but 70 per cent is better than not being here at all.”

Darley school garden project gets cash lift

Assistant principal Kasey Simpson and principal David Lombardi. (Marco De Luca)

New school aims high By Esther Lauaki Enrolments have opened for Burnside’s newest school. Principal David Lombardi and assistant principal Kasey Simpson will be leading Burnside Primary School when it opens for next year’s first term. Mr Lombardi has come across from Footscray North Primary School, where he was principal for three years and assistant principal for six years before that. “What we want to do is have a holistic approach to education at Burnside Primary School,” he said.

“We’ll seek to provide duality between high academic rigor as well as high level of support for emotional and social intelligence. “Over the next few months, our school site will begin to take shape, in the meantime I will be building our team around a school culture based on a safe and supportive learning environment that motivates and challenges our students. “Burnside Primary School will not just be a school committed to high academic standards. We will work to inspire curious, critical and creative thinkers and problem solvers who are technologically literate and capable of bringing about positive change in the world.”

Mr Lombardi said he would work with the local community, pupils and parents to create a school for the area that “embodies excellence and opportunity for learners”. The school received $5.6 million state funding in April to enable completion of the final stage of construction, including a performing arts and physical education building, basketball court, gym storeroom, music room, staff area, multipurpose room and canteen and student and staff amenities. The school is set to accommodate up to 475 students next year. For more information about the school, go to bit.ly/2PJqgxx

A new sensory garden at Darley Primary School that will support students with disabilities and additional needs will take root. The school will receive $200,000 to build its outdoor sensory space under the latest round of the state government’s Inclusive Schools Fund. Darley is one of 93 schools across Victoria sharing in $15 million to build all-access play areas, sensory gardens and outdoor learning areas. Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said the fund would help schools such as Darley better support the social and education needs of young people with disabilities. “We’re continuing to invest in schools to ensure students of all abilities can access a great education, no matter their circumstances,” Ms Pulford said. “It’s all about giving our primary schools the equipment and infrastructure they need to inspire a lifelong passion for learning for all of their students and to show that disability isn’t a barrier to learning and achieving.” Under the Inclusive Schools Fund, almost 90 projects for inclusive play spaces, outdoor learning areas, sensory gardens and calm spaces have been delivered in the past three years in Victoria. Dancing has turned Jennifer Squire’s world upside down since she took it up more than a decade ago. Squire, a doctor in chemistry, turned her back on a career in science to pursue her passion for pole dancing. “I have a PhD in synthetic chemistry,” she said. “When I finished my PhD, I realised that the culture of academia didn’t suit me. “I was turning down job opportunities because I wanted to pursue my passion for dance.” The 31-year-old instructor at En Pointe Aerial Academy in Melton is now a national champion and qualified for the Pole Theatre World Championships in London next year – but she’ll need a leg up to get there. Pole Theatre competitions showcase different styles of pole dancing including comedy, drama, art and “classique” categories. “I have been dancing since I was four years old,” Squire said. “When I eventually got too old to do calisthenics I tried to find another form of dance. “I found pole to be such a great workout … I thought I was a strong dancer before but nothing compares to this.” At the world championships, Squire will be up against competitors from 20 countries, performing her comedy pole routine by her stage name Le Chatelier – after a chemistry principle as a nod to her “old life”. “I’m really excited to bring my humour and my unique performance to an international audience,” she said. “It’s been well received everywhere I’ve performed.”

Large-scale aircraft, warbirds, jets, aerobatic aircraft, gliders and plenty of unorthodox models will take to the skies at the Fun Fly event on November 11 at Mt Cottrell. Club president David Axon said the event, which draws about a 1000 fans every year, would have something for everyone.

“People can expect lolly drops and fast-moving model jet aircraft, which are very popular,” Mr Axon said. “We have a couple of unorthodox planes on the program, as well. I have a two-metre long flying iron. “There will also be racing planes, which are always a hit. It’s a great day for the family.” Details: 0409 942 113 Esther Lauaki

Moving right along Keilor Rotary Club and Sunshine Hospital are teaming up to get patients moving. The Rotary club’s Donations in Kind program puts secondhand mobility and lifestyle aids into the hands of those who need them most. Allied health education lead Angela Mucic said the program allowed patients experiencing financial hardship to access equipment for free. “Previously, the hospital provided equipment for 30 days for free,” she said. “But after that patients had to pay a hire fee or purchase it, so there’s often this limbo where people have had to give up equipment because they can’t afford it. “We think that could potentially contribute to people readmitting to hospital if they’re not

safe enough or having falls, so this program allows patients in hardship to have that equipment from the very beginning and as long as they need it.” Ms Mucic said a wide variety of equipment had already been donated. “We’ve only been going three months and we’re already seeing equipment returned from patients who’ve had it for a month of two and no longer need it,” she said. “That’s the aim, so it’s great to see. “It’s mainly four-wheel frames and bathroom equipment, like shower seats and over toilet seats. One of the great things is … getting this equipment out of hard rubbish.” Tate Papworth

MY PLACE Audrey Witmore is fine-tuning her skills for a life as a musician. The 18-year-old talks with Esther Lauaki about her first great love.

How long did you go to school in the area? I attended Mowbray College from 2009 to 2012. What are you passionate about? Besides music, I am passionate about the beautiful animals I have in my life, a golden retriever and two border collies. I stopped horse riding when I entered VCASS (Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School) in 2013, but I would definitely love to start riding again.

Where do you hope to go with your music?

Tell us how you started playing the French horn.

What does your typical week look like (rehearsals etc)?

I have been playing French horn since I was nine years old, and I began while at Mowbray College in Melton. Since year 7, I have been studying at VCASS under the tuition of Linda Hewett.

At school, our days are spent half in normal academic classes and the other half of the day is spent in specialist classes, which for me are music classes focusing on my VCE music subjects, music styles and composition and music investigations.

What extra-curricular musical performances have you done? I have been a part of Melbourne Youth Orchestras throughout my musical development, and for the past two years I have been a part of its flagship orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra. These rehearsals take place on Saturdays. Some of us in the orchestra were

NEW

The next couple of years will involve further musical study at university on French horn, which will hopefully mould me to become a professional orchestral musician in the future.

What would people be surprised to learn about Audrey Witmore? I love immersing myself in the other aspects of Melbourne’s art scene, especially going to NGV exhibitions and ballet performances. Getting outdoors and experiencing different natural environments.

selected in June to be a part of the MYO/MSO Side by Side Concert at Hamer Hall, conducted by Tianyi Lu, which was a humbling and eye-opening experience. In February, I was also very fortunate to be selected to go on exchange to the Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, England for two weeks which strengthened my yearning to play French horn professionally in an orchestra one day, and expand my prospects overseas.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds plenty to explore at Karlaylisi Don’t let the Ballarat Road address mislead – Karlaylisi is on Gordon Street. In fact, it occupies the exact same premises as the sadly short-lived Spice Klub and its Indonesian offerings. Karlaylisi delivers Uyghur cuisine – the food of the Uyghurs, who live mostly in China’s Xinjiang province. There’s oodles to like about Karlaylisi. Indeed, it could be tossed up as the perfect template for the perfect CTS eating house. The menu is long, stuffed with dumplings, hand-made noodles, soups, cold dishes and kebabs. And lots and lots of lamb dishes. Some items are certainly for larger and planned groups – the roasted whole lamb ($350, $180), for instance. Or even the lamb casserole with steamed wrap bread ($60). Yet despite the ambitious menu and that this appears to be a one-man show, we found our food to be fresh, hot and delivered to our table with admirable speed and wide smiles. An early highlight – actually, THE highlight – are the lamb skewers ($2 each, minimum of five). These feature bigger chunks of meat than we’ve had elsewhere. They’re more tender, too, and a little less seasoned with salt and cumin. There’s some fat, but it all tastes way more than good. Siyi qanalgan lagman ($14.50) is a homely

KARLAYLISI RESTAURANT Address: 4/203 Ballarat Road, Footscray. (Don’t let the Ballarat Road address mislead – Karlaylisi is on Gordon Street.) Phone: 0413 955 515 and nicely plain mix of lamb and vegetables on a mound of noodles. You could pitch this to picky kids as a spag bol variant, no problems. From the dumpling/pastry list come tugra ($13), lamb dumplings. Once again rather plain, they nevertheless go fine. Aqqik korulgan chop ($14.50) is a much sexier (ie. oilier and with some chilli heat) noodle dish with lamb, garlic chives and sesame oil. Kala til kormisi ($14) is stir-fried beef tongue. I expected this to have a more pronounced chargrill or wok hei aspect. Instead, the meat is quite silky and very tender. The overtly meaty vibe of our menu choices is ameliorated by the complementary salad presented to us. Laohusai ($13) is a delight, zingy and fresh with loud voices of garlic and vinegar coming through. We will return to Karlaylisi – there’s so much to explore! How to sell your “dream” home The real estate market is increasingly competitive; buyers are savvy and often not prepared to compromise. In many cases, they’re looking to buy not just a home, but a lifestyle. An open house is your chance to showcase your home at its best, sell the “dream” to potential buyers, and secure a top-dollar sale.

Industry insiders offer these tips: 1. Spruce up the garden The front yard is your first chance to make a good impression, and it’s worth investing some time to get it looking its best. 2. Freshen up the facade Stand outside the front door and look at it with fresh eyes. A neglected facade will make people feel like the home hasn’t been well maintained. • Clean front door and walls • Buy a fresh doormat • Add pot plants 3. Make an entrance Clear away all clutter that can pile up near the front door, and remove any furniture that’s too large for the space. 4. Declutter the entire home Think minimal: clear crowded shelving units, keeping only a few key pieces. Clearing all horizontal surfaces can transform a room’s look. 5. Remove personal items and family photos A primary objective should be to make interiors look beautiful, but impersonal, so people can imagine themselves living in the space.

6. Add value by adding function If possible, show people more living zones. This can be as simple as creating a reading nook by a window. In a larger home, style the smallest bedroom as something else, such as a home office or playroom. 7. Style the kitchen Remove everything from benchtops and soften the look with a beautiful oversized bowl or platter, or some cut flowers. • Pay particular attention to cleaning cooktop, oven, sink and tap. • Take “stuff” off fridge door. 8. Style the bedrooms Clear all surfaces and remove personal items. Make the bed the focal point, dressed up in its “Sunday best” bed linen. Turn on matching lamps on the bedside tables to create soft glow. 9. Style the bathroom Conceal all personal items. Make sure every surface is sparkling. New towels and flowers help. 10. Put away any pet food bowls and beds. This is an edited version of a story by Houzz’s Gabrielle Chariton on domain. com.au

Think minimal: Create a beautiful, impersonal interior so people can imagine themselves living in the space. (iStock)

SPORT Rockbank a good fit for new coach and club New Rockbank coach Alan Watson is looking forward to returning to the Riddell District Netball League. Watson, who coached Lancefield for several years before coaching Melton South in the Ballarat Netball League this year, was announced as the Rams’ new A-grade netball coach at the weekend. Watson said moving to the Rams was the right fit for him. “I spoke to someone who mentioned that Rockbank may have been looking for a new coach,” he said. “I wanted to go back to the RDNL – it was better for me and I didn’t have to travel as far. “I had association with someone at the club, so I’ve been watching them for a while. “They had some success and want to build on that and that’s what I was looking for.” Watson said he left Melton South on good terms, but the two parties were heading in

different directions. He coached the club to seventh in the A-grade competition – its best result for a number of years. Watson said he had been encouraged by conversations with the Rams about their focus on the netball program. The Rams surprised everyone by making it to this year’s A-grade preliminary final, having made finals for the first time. Three of their four teams made finals – which was also a first. Watson said it was a good platform to build on for next season. He said the majority of the senior side’s players would be returning, while he was likely to bring a few players with him who had played under him at Lancefield and Melton South. The club would also hold trials to look for new players. “They are investing in netball and I thought it was a good fit,” he said.

“I’ve been pleased to see the progress in the side and it’s a real good growth area. “Everyone will start on equal ground. They’re happy for new players to come into the club as well.” Watson said the club might lose some players from the lower grades as they followed former coach Lizzy Masterson to her new club, Melton Centrals, where she will be a specialist coach. The club and Masterson parted ways towards the end of the season. Watson, who will also coach the B-grade side, will take on a mentoring role to senior assistant coach Nathan Selvidge. Jacinta Fuzzy will coach the C-grade side, while Marie Bolitho will continue coaching the under-19s. The Rams netball trials will be held on Sunday, November 11, at Ian Cowie Reserve from 11am-1pm. Burras cruise to victory By Tara Murray Diggers Rest Bulla put in a strong batting performance to beat Woodend in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. The Burras have focused on improving their batting and the results are starting to show. Woodend set a reasonable total of 7-192 from its overs, with Adam Johnstone top scoring with 50. Rhys Berry was the pick of the bowlers for the Burras, taking 3-32. Burras’ playing coach Rasika Batepola said they were determined to get the runs. “It was a quick out-field,” he said. “We fielded pretty well, but had a couple of bad bowling patches. “On a normal ground it would be about 140 runs. We thought we could chase it down.” The Burras got off to a good start with the bat, putting on 61 for the opening partnership. They added just over 100 for the second wicket partnership to take control of the game. They finished 4-194. Lindon Dowsett made 72, while Blake Robinson made 47 and Kevin Barker made 39 at a run a ball. Batepola said they had a lot of confidence after winning two of their past three games. The other game was a draw against Gisborne, as rain meant they did not take to the field. They currently sit fourth, having only lost to the undefeated Bacchus Marsh. “There’s a great atmosphere on and off the field,” he said. “Everyone has clicked and we have a lot of confidence right now.” The Burras face third-placed Romsey in a one-day clash. Batepola said they needed to win such games if they were to make the finals. It’s the last one-day clash for a while, with the two-day cricket getting underway from round six. Batepola said as a side they are better suited to red ball cricket. In other results, Bacchus Marsh remains unbeaten after an easy win against Wallan. The Bulls bowled Wallan out for 64, with Madushanka Ekanayake taking 5-28. The Bulls were on track to make the runs without losing a wicket before Shaun Taylor was run out for 37 with just four runs needed to win. It was only a minor hiccup, with the Bulls finishing 1-66. Gisborne had a massive win against Sunbury to also remain undefeated and a Chris Burkett century guided Romsey to a big win against Sunbury United.

Melton’s winning run has come to an end in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1. Having won its first three matches, Melton lost a thriller against Brunswick 76 (15)-73 (3). Conrad Dawson led the only successful Melton rink with a 21-14 win, while David George’s rink tied 20-20. Despite the loss, Melton remains second. It wasn’t all bad news for Melton, with its second side picking up its first win of the season, against Port Melbourne. Melton has a big week coming up, with its top side hosting Essendon under lights on Friday.

Ballarat CA

Darley’s tough season has continued in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Without a win after three matches, the Lions were hoping to break the duck on Saturday against Brown Hill. The Lions made 177, bowled out with two balls remaining in their innings. Joel Cadman top-scored with 49. Brown Hill had no trouble making the runs, finishing on 1-179 with nearly 10 overs remaining.

Bowls

Bacchus Marsh has enjoyed a massive win in Central Highlands Bowls Division top grade. Bacchus Marsh had little trouble accounting for Trentham 112 (17)-75 (1). Simon Cornock, Daniel Willis and Phil Minniti led the winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh, while Don Louttit’s rink had to settle for a draw. Bacchus Marsh sits on top after three rounds. Diggers Rest and Bacchus Marsh had good wins in division 2, while Bacchus Marsh made it a clean sweep with a good win in division 3.

The Riddell District Football Netball League will have 11 teams next season, after the Sunbury Kangaroos’ request to leave the competition was approved. It was announced last week that all the Kangaroos’ senior sides would play in the Essendon District Football League from next season. For the full story, go to starweekly.com.au/sports Woodend’s Daniel Heaney is bowled by Diggers Rest Bulla’s Kevin Barker. (Shawn Smits)

In the Johnstone Shield, St Anthonys suffered its first loss of the season, folding to Bacchus Marsh. The Saints made 169, before the Bulls made 5-171 in reply. It was a bad day for Eynesbury Eagles against Riddell. Tristan Francis made 69, but there

was little support as the Eagles made just 90. Riddell finished 4-91. Ashfield and Rupertswood were the other winners. In the Jensen Shield, Sunbury United, Macedon, St Anthonys and Malmsbury were the winners.

Bacchus Marsh Lions are making a strong impression Bacchus Marsh Lions are feeling comfortable in the Country Basketball League south-west men’s competition. In the side’s first season, it was always going to take some time to figure out where it fits. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben reckons his Lions are in the top bracket of sides. “Looking at some of the results, we’re seeing four or five teams that are really good,” he said. “Mt Gambier is looking really strong and Bellarine looks like a team that may be able to take it to them. “Geelong is a quality side and Horsham is still fairly strong. We’re sitting just below a couple of the better sides. We’re delighted to be 3-2, having played some of the good teams.” The Lions split their weekend road trip down the highway. On Saturday night, they lost to Bellarine Storm. Feben said the Storm, which won 93-84, was strong team with a good mix of youth and experience.

“They have a lot of depth on their bench,” he said. “We were missing a couple of our bigger boys, which didn’t help. The scoreboard flattered us. For most of the game we were down by 20 points and we came back late when we went full press and got a couple of cheap ones.” Billy Feben top-scored with 31 points and Jordan Kirk scored 17. On Sunday, the Lions faced Geelong Supercats, who had a win against the Terang Tornadoes on Saturday night. The match against the Supercats was the Lions’ closest of the season. The Lions won 85-79, but Jeff Feben said they were pushed all the way. “Geelong are a relatively young, pretty fast side,” he said. “We had to scrap to be in front and then win the game. “The result was always in question. We had a win against some quality opposition when we were tested.”

Billy Feben was again the stand-out, scoring 34 points. His father said he had scored early on to get the scoreboard ticking over. Kirk scored 16 points, while Darcy McMillan chipped in with 18. Jeff Feben said it was good to see McMillan step up and make the most of his opportunities. “He’s been struggling for minutes,” the coach said. “I’ve been saying to him, ‘Give me a reason to leave you out there’. He did that. “It’s nice for the others to see if they come ready they can force us to leave them out there.” The Lions this week face the Ararat RedBacks. They will have to tackle them without Billy Feben, who is unavailable. Jeff Feben said it would be a good opportunity for other players to step up. Tara Murray Billy Feben provided plenty of points for the Bacchus Marsh Lions at the weekend. (Shawn Smits)

Lions let game slip away By Tara Murray A poor performance with the bat was the downfall for Melton against Hoppers Crossing in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west competition on Saturday. The Lions were left to rue a sub par performance with the bat against Hoppers Crossing in a match which had become a one-dayer due to a washout. Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said they only had themselves to blame. The Lions were bowled out for just 114 with nearly eight overs remaining. The Lions struggled to get partnerships as wickets fell constantly. “We just didn’t execute our skills early and played some disappointing shots,” Geisler said. “The shot selection let us down. Even though it was tough out there, five or six of our batsmen threw their wickets away. “We still have to knuckle down and spend time at the crease.” Nathan Taylor top scored with 50, while skipper Ben MacRae at the top of the order was the only other batsman to score double figures, making 23. Geisler said while they bowled and fielded well, in the end they didn’t have enough runs on the board. “Another 20 to 30 runs would have been enough,” he said. “Hoppers made us get them out. “We managed to get back in the game when we had them 8-94. “But they hit a boundary here or there at the right time and were able to get the runs.” Hoppers Crossing finished 8-118 hitting their total in the 43rd over. The Lions shared the wickets around. Jake Charge had three and Geisler chipped in with two. Brad Jones and Ash Sweet each took a wicket. The loss leaves the Lions on 1-1, ahead of a one-dayer with Werribee. Werribee had a good win against Taylors Lakes on the weekend. Geisler said they were hoping to rack up a few more wins. “It’s always a good game against Werribee,” he said. “Hopefully things will start to settle. The guys who missed round one have a game under their belts and hopefully we can start to build some momentum.” In other results, Williamstown defeated Altona in the Hobsons Bay derby, Yarraville beat Moorabbin, Elsternwick won against Brighton, Ormond was too good for Malvern and Oakleigh ended Caulfield’s winning run. It was a tough day for Melton’s second XI which also lost to Hoppers Crossing. 32 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 30, 2018

Storm fades to Wyndham Vale

The Lions made 166, with Hoppers Crossing chasing down the runs in the third last over. Hoppers Crossing finished 2-169. Meanwhile the Lions are still after girls to

play in their under-16 girls team. Players between the ages of 12 and 15 are welcome to join the team which plays on Wednesday nights.

Sydenham-Hillside proved no match for Wyndham Vale in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Charles Clark Shield division 4. The Storm were bowled out for 123, with 6.2 overs remaining. Ben Green top scored with 45 before being run out. A few others made starts, but no one was able to go on with it. The Storm needed early wickets, but it wasn’t to be. Wyndham Vale had no troubles at all, finishing 5-125. Storm captain-coach Dane Currency took 2-26, the only bowler with multiple wickets. The Storm sits 1-1. Caroline Springs lost against Maribyrnong Park St Marys in a low-scoring affair. Caroline Springs was bowled out for just 105. Maribyrnong Park St Marys looked on track for a win at 3-95. They lost 5-1 to crumble to 8-96, but they steadied to win, finishing 8-109. Maribyrnong Park St Marys is the only undefeated team after two matches. Caroline Springs sits 1-1 like eight other teams. Melton South Royals got their first win of the Russell Pollock Shield Division 5 competition, beating Barkly Street United. United was bowled out for 127, and the Royals made the runs with five wickets in hand to finish on 5-128. Melton Centrals lost their first match of the season, losing to Footscray ANA. Centrals made 9-157, with Footscray ANA making 4-163 in reply. Tara Murray
