Melton marks centenary

(Marco De Luca)

Thousands of people are expected to gather in Melton to commemorate Remembrance Day this Sunday. November 11 marks the centenary of the Armistice which ended World War I. Melton RSL president Ian Lawrey and secretary Kevin Murray (pictured) will be among those observing a minute’s silence at 11am. More than half a million poppies will be sold in the annual Poppy Appeal to raise funds for servicemen and women in need. Mr Murray acknowledged the contributions of all service men and women. “The sacrifice that our service men and women made is in no way diminished no matter how long it has been,” he said. RSL Victoria appeals manager Peter Smith said the Poppy Appeal was a cause that resonates with all Australians. “It reminds us all that we need to focus on the next generation of men and women who have served Australia, and who may need help finding their feet following their career in the Australian Defence Forces,” Mr Smith said. Poppies are available from the RSL, Woolworths or Officeworks stores across Victoria or volunteers throughout November. Esther Lauaki

On track at Cobblebank By Esther Lauaki Melton commuters are being given their first peek of what their new train station at Cobblebank will look like. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan unveiled designs at the station’s site last week. The station, on Ferris Road between Rockbank and Melton, will include an accessible pedestrian overpass, secure bike parking, a bus interchange and carpark. Ms Allan said the station, part of the half a billion-dollar Ballarat Line Upgrade, would help deliver more frequent and reliable services for growing communities along the line.

“Public transport options are critical to helping create liveable suburbs for Melbourne, now and into the future,” she said. “We’re acting now to ensure the future residents of Cobblebank and surrounding new suburbs have access to good public transport so they can get where they need to go for work, study or recreation.” The station will be a central feature of a town centre that will include community facilities and shops. Ms Allan said a new bus route would be funded once the station was complete, providing locals with more travel options

and better access to key destinations and services. Construction of the new station at Cobblebank is scheduled to start before the end of the year, with preparatory work already under way. Meanwhile, residents will be given a say on landscaping at the station at consultation sessions beginning this week.

6 November 2018 Melton City Council Community News

Join in the fun at Djerriwarrh Festival

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to say how proud and humbled I am to have been elected Mayor for the next 12 months, and to have the leadership of our great community entrusted to me, once again. I am committed to serving the people of our City to the best of my ability with pride, dedication and, integrity. Of course, leading a community as vibrant and dynamic as ours is a team effort and I couldn’t possibly do it alone. Therefore, I would like to acknowledge my fellow Councillors for their commitment to making the City of Melton the best it can be. In particular, I’d like to pass on my sincere thanks to outgoing Deputy Mayor, Cr Ken Hardy, for his support over the past year.

The 2018 Djerriwarrh Festival is almost here, and the jam-packed line-up of activities promises something for everyone. The festivities will kick off at 11am with the annual street parade along High Street. This year’s theme is ‘All That Glitters’. The huge live music line-up on the main stage will be headlined by The Superjesus, which is one of Australia’s most successful and respected rock bands. Other main attractions include the Djerriwarrh Festival bonfire, market stall village, Sustainability Lane, pet expo, an international food offering, Lion’s Club Carnival and an incredible fireworks display to cap off the day. The event will be held on Saturday 11 November, at Melton Recreation Reserve, between 11am and 11pm.

For more information, see melton.vic.gov.au/djfestival

Each year, our community gets bigger and better, and I look forward to taking every opportunity to meet with residents to celebrate our unique community. The first chance I’ll have to do this, will be at the much loved Djerriwarrh Festival on Saturday 10 November. As always, an exciting program of activities, entertainment and displays has been organised, including the ever-popular Lions Club Carnival. I look forward to seeing everyone there. I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200 to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email at: bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Cr Michelle Mendes Diggers Rest Preschool will undergo much-needed renovations thanks to a $350,000 grant from the State Government. Council will contribute $979,000 to the project, which will see an extension to the existing learning space, and create more three and four-year-old kindergarten places. This is a wonderful outcome for the Diggers Rest community. The State Government also recently announced a $400,000 Growing Suburbs Fund grant to redevelop Stan Payne Reserve. This project will deliver wonderful open space that includes natural and artificial shade; landscaping; public art and interpretative signage; upgrades to existing shelter and toilet facilities, and pedestrian connections.

The Superjesus

I’d also like to congratulate Cr Lara Carli for being elected Deputy Mayor, and I look forward to working closely with her, over the coming 12 months.

I am also pleased to report that the Hume Drive Duplication Project

reached practical completion in September. Both old and new carriageways have been fully opened to motorists, easing traffic congestion, especially during morning and evening peak hours. Council officers are now working with VicRoads and electricity providers to finish public lighting and traffic signal upgrades, with everything set to be complete in late December. And finally, I’d like to invite everyone to come along to the Djerriwarrh Festival on Saturday 10 November, at the Melton Recreation Reserve. This year’s festival features our traditional street parade, bonfire, food trucks and market stalls, pet expo, community stage, and much more. Look forward to seeing you there. Funds boost for e-waste collection

By Esther Lauaki A Melton woman is appealing for witnesses to a vicious dog attack on her beloved pet. Karen Blacklaws has been at Maddy’s bedside as the six year-old Jack Russell fights for life at the Werribee Animal Hospital after a severe attack last Tuesday night (October 30). Ms Blacklaws said her husband was out walking the couple’s two dogs, Maddy and Karly, a Maltese cross, when a man with three large dogs on leads, lost control of them. “My husband wasn’t sure what breed the three dogs were but described them as very big dogs,” Ms Blacklaws told Star Weekly. “Karly ran away and ran home but the dogs just set on my poor Maddy. “The man took Maddy out of the mouth of one of the dogs and laid her on the nature strip … my husband thought she was dead.” The Jack Russell has a punctured lung, neck and spinal injuries and wounds to her legs. Ms Blacklaws said the pup’s neck wound was so deep her microchip was lost in the attack. “She’s had to have two surgeries and she’s in a bad way in ICU,” she said. “It’s horrific. “She’s not just a dog, she’s my baby. “Imagine if they got a little kid, the kid wouldn’t have survived. “There were people around who had seen the attack.” Ms Blacklaws is urging anyone with information about the attack on October 30 about 6pm along Sunset Boulevard near the park to contact Melton council on 9747 7200.

Moorabool council will receive $100,000 to upgrade the e-waste collection and storage site at its Bacchus Marsh transfer station. The council is one of 76 to receive a share in $16.5 million to help manage Victoria’s e-waste and keep it out of landfill. The statewide funding aims to provide all Victorians reasonable access to drop-off facilities, ahead of a ban on e-waste from July next year. Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said the program will help reduce the volume of electronic equipment ending up in landfill. “This funding will ensure Victoria has one of the best e-waste collection infrastructure networks in the country and we’re delivering on our promise to maximise recycling,” Ms Pulford said. “We’re giving local councils like Moorabool Shire the support they need to recycle growing volumes of e-waste materials.” With the state funding, council transfer stations will be equipped to receive discarded electronics which will be stripped of components for reprocessing into new technology or sold on the second-hand goods market. E-waste can be described as anything with a plug or a battery that is at the end of its useful life and includes everything from old mobile phones, computers, audio devices, refrigerators and other white goods, hair dryers, TVs, heaters, and air-conditioners. Gilson College 30 Year Anniversary

This year Gilson College reached a milestone, on Saturday 20th October the College celebrated 30 years of providing Christian Education to the community. Gilson College began with fifty students in 1988 and has grown to more than 1200 students spanning over two campuses. The growth is a testament to the team of principals who began with a vision 30 years ago – Lyndon Chapman, Ron Hiscox, Peter Baskin, Chris Cowled and now Mark Vodell. Each of the past principals were present at this special occasion as well as past students and staff. The anniversary celebration was a day filled with stories and memories from past students and principals, musical items, creative expressions, drama presentations and a special uplifting message from the guest speaker, Dr. Daryl Murdoch, National Education Director. Attendees were able to walk through years of photos and memorabilia from when the College began to the present. Current College Principal, Mark Vodell shared his sentiments on the day “To hear the past principals speak gave many a person a sense of God’s leading in our history. Then to see and hear our students and ex-students share their talents was certainly an inspiring time for the present. I remain hopeful about our future and our capacity to have a positive impact on the lives of tomorrow’s students and their families if we acknowledge our Lord and let him direct our paths.” Congratulations to Gilson College on this auspicious occasion.

Tale of a long lost book By Esther Lauaki A Melton man has been reunited with a long lost book 60 years after it was gifted to him for Christmas as a boy. Terry Brooks received the Roy Rogers’ Adventures No. 2 as a present from his parents when the family lived in Melton in 1958. A handwritten message: “To Terry, Love Mum & Dad. Christmas 1958” was inscribed on the second page. Mr Brooks said that when the family relocated to Bacchus Marsh the novel was misplaced during the moving process – not to be seen again. “A lot of stuff was stored in my parents house,” he told Star Weekly. “They lived in Melton before moving to Bacchus Marsh and stored our belongings in the garage. “My father, years later, sold the contents of his garage when he decided to downsize and the book was among those things.” The book last month landed in the hands of Melton resident and treasure collector Colleen Downie who advertised it for sale on Facebook. “The book was in fantastic condition for a 70 year old book and had an inscription on the second page from his Mum,” Ms Downie said. “It must have passed through many hands in all those years and ended up in my shop. “After speaking to the person I purchased the book off in Coimadai in Bacchus Marsh, they said that they had found it years before in Sunshine and it ended back in Melton, where Terry now lives. “I listed it for sale on Facebook and amazingly his [Terry’s] sister, who lives in Sunbury, saw the ad and the inscription in the photos and rang her brother. “I got a phone call from this gentleman

explaining that it was his book as a child. “What are the chances of this happening?” Ms Downie returned the book to Mr Brooks last week. “It was brilliant to see the look on his face when I was able to hand him his book,

that bought back so many memories of his childhood.” Mr Brooks said that he would keep the book to pass on to his three grandsons some day. “Just the nostalgia of it all is quite extraordinary,” he said.

Community grants boost Two Moorabool community causes have received a $25,000 federal funding boost. Blackwood Cricket Club and the Navigators Community Hall are among the projects awarded funding through the Stronger Community grants program. The Navigators Community Hall will receive $4900 towards installing a battery to store electricity to run the existing solar panels. Ballarat federal MP Catherine King said that the Stronger Community grants program gave community groups an opportunity to make a big impact on small projects that benefit many people. “The installation of the battery at the Navigators Community Hall will enable the community to save on on-going cost of running the hall, allowing them to invest the savings into other community endeavours” Ms King said. Another $20,000 has been allocated to the Blackwood Cricket Club to go towards the purchase of a minibus and trailer to help the club travel to games throughout the season. “Given the distance that the club needs to travel for some of their games, the addition of the bus is sure to increase participation,” Ms King said. “The great thing about small communities is that the bus will be used all year round, benefiting the whole community. “Blackwood Cricket Club members have already said that the bus will be used during the Blackwood wood chop.” Esther Lauaki

Husband gives gift of life By Tate Papworth John and Jeanette Caldwell hold a special place in Victorian medical history. John gave his wife Jeanette a kidney 27 years ago, becoming the first non-related person to donate a kidney in Victoria. Jeanette said she developed kidney problems when the couple first met. “I was born with my condition, but it wasn’t picked up until I was 22 and by then all the damage was done,” she said. “I preserved my kidney life by 10 years on a special diet of no salt, no sodium and 30 grams of protein a day.” However, eventually her kidneys began to fail. “When my kidneys really started to fail, they decided to test family members. “My mum was a match, but she had scarlet fever when she was young and had scarring on her kidneys. They said that would’ve been like giving me bruised fruit, so we couldn’t do that. “One day after testing John looked at my medical card and noticed we were both B positive, which isn’t that common, so the next time we saw the kidney specialist we jokingly said should we test John … things went from there.” Although it started out as a joke, things rapidly got serious when doctors confirmed John was a viable match. Jeanette said the closeness of the match had the two asking some uncomfortable questions. “We actually had two antigens in the blood that match, which is highly unusual, so then we went down a road of wondering if we’re related, which was quite funny because no, we’re not,” she said. After vigorous physical and psychological testing, the operation was a success. Almost three decades on, Jeanette said

there’s been some road bumps, but no troubles with her kidney. “I’ve had lots of reactions to the drugs, but no rejections or anything like that. “I had flaps grow on gums which had to be cut out, a face full of acne, I got the shakes which didn’t help because I worked at a coffee

shop, my gall bladder out, a third of my stomach removed and cataract surgery. “I’ve had lots of things out and one thing put in, but I’m still walking around and I’m not hooked up to a machine.” Jeanette said the experience brought her and John closer together.

“Although my brothers-in-law are a little unhappy with John for raising the bar so high.” Sunday, November 18 is the national day dedicated to honouring all organ and tissue donors and their families. For more information visit: www.donatelife. gov.au

War of words over forest status By Esther Lauaki Reclassifying Wombat State Forest to become a national park would give it the “protections, management and funding” it deserves, according to park supporters. The Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) has been ordered by the state government to investigate the future use and classifications of Wombat, Wellsford, Mount Cole and Pyrenees Ranges state forests. A VEAC draft report’s recommendations include changing the status of the Wombat State Forest by establishing the Wombat-Lerderderg National Park – a move that users feared could

restrict public access. The report is open for public comment until December 10. The Victorian National Parks Association, one of the longest-running nature conservation advocacy groups in the state, supports the change in status. Director Matt Ruchel said there was widespread support for the change and that it would elevate the status of the park to receive more state funding for management. “There have been a lot of people supporting a change in tenure of Wombat State Forest for at least the last decade,” Mr Ruchel told Star Weekly. “When you have this tenure change …

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about what this will mean. “State forests are generally put aside for extractive use and there’s no regulation or management of state forests other than for logging operations or large scale mining. “Changing to a national park excludes those very damaging activities. “For everything else regarding recreational activities, camping, trail bike riding and four wheel driving the rules are exactly the same for state forests and national parks. “People saying that recreational users will be locked out of Wombat State Forest is untrue.” Forest user Loris Duclos, and recipient of

the commonwealth’s centenary medal for “outstanding service to the environment, particularly the Wombat State Forest”, last month slammed the recommendation and described it as an “ecological disaster”. “Our forest went through two decades of unsustainable industrial logging, which our community fought hard against to stop from happening,” Ms Duclos said. “In the 1990s, the fight was against the extreme right who wanted to chop everything. The fight has now become against the extreme left who want to keep people out of large areas of the forest.” To make a submission: bit.ly/2ERFgIq

Fun run a hue success Colourful explosions and running fun were enjoyed at Melton and Caroline Springs schools last week. Melton Primary School and Southern Cross Grammar students hosted their second annual School Run 4 Fun Colour Explosion last Friday. After a successful inaugural event last year, Southern Cross this year raised $7000 with hopes of reaching $10,000 to fund the purchase of new equipment. Participants were sprayed with non-toxic colour powder while making their way through a giant inflatable arch on the school oval. Games and market stalls and prizes were among the highlights of the day. Parents and Friends Association member Joanne Camilleri said the event was a great way to get the students engaged with their local community for a good cause.

Southern Cross stepped up its fundraising efforts by enlisting professionals to collect on its behalf, in addition to the work of its own school volunteers . Melton Primary School raised $19,000. Esther Lauaki

All sweet for Sugar Gum By Tate Papworth A Hillside landmark is about to embark on a new era. The Sugar Gum Hotel will undergo a $7 million re-development, which management says will bolster its services and create employment opportunities for the community. Venue manager Claude Monaco said the re-development has been a long time coming. “We’re 25 years old – when this place was originally built it was probably more of a country hotel than a suburban hotel … it was basically all farmland around here,” Mr Monaco said.

‘‘

Suburbs have grown and we’ve simply outgrown what - Claude Monaco we have

’’

“Since then, suburbs have grown and we’ve simply outgrown what we have.” A larger bistro, outdoor dining area and a new play area for children are among the slated upgrades. Mr Monaco said the play area will be one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. “One thing I’ve heard a lot over the years is that we need a bigger play area because the one we have is quite small,” he said. “This one is going to be massive and it’ll also be fully interactive. “There’ll be a theatre room, a massive talking tree and other things to keep kids entertained.” Mr Monaco said the expanded hotel will also generate job opportunities. “We should have over 10 new positions available once this re-development is complete,” he said. “We’ll have the capacity to

hire new chefs, gaming staff and bistro staff so we’ll go out into the local community and look to employ from within.” Work on the re-development will begin on November 14 but Mr Monaco expects the hotel to be trading heading into Christmas.

“There’s going to be a bit of a transition period … but it’ll be business as usual,” he said. “We might have one day of closure where we move things around a bit, but apart from that there’ll be no difference in our day-to-day functioning.”

Group grants up for grabs Melton and Moorabool councils and community groups have under a month to apply for a share in $200 million of grants to go towards activities, events or infrastructure projects. Groups can apply before November 15 for funding, from the state’s Building Better Regions Fund, under two streams – community investment and infrastructure projects. Each stream funds projects and initiatives up to $10 million with minimum funding amounts starting at $5000 for the community investment stream and $20,000 for the infrastructure projects stream. Regional Development Australia Melbourne chair Steve Kozlowski said the fund helps to get local projects off the ground. “Round three funding has opened and we’re calling on not-for-profit organisations and agencies to put their hat in the ring and apply for a grant to channel more investment in our local economy and build better outcomes,” Mr Kozlowski said. He said that more than $8.7 million had already been allocated to infrastructure and community projects, including close to $3 million towards the construction of the Eynesbury Recreation Reserve which will feature recreational facilities, including an adventure playground, barbecue facilities and walking paths Details: infrastructure.gov.au/bbrf Esther Lauaki

Students of song Hundreds of Melton students raised their voices to be counted as part of a national music initiative last week. Kurunjang Secondary College and Wedge Park Primary School collaborated for the Music: Count Us In event where students across the country sang the same song, on the same day, at the same time. They joined more than half a million Australians, including children from 3400 schools, to sing an original tune in celebration of musical education. Music director Joanne Zerafa said it was the third time Melton students had participated in the event. They spent months rehearsing an original

song while also putting together a repertoire of performances for a major rock concert they will be hosting at the secondary school later this month. “The event is a true indication of the power of music,” Ms Zerafa said. “We want everyone to understand that music plays one of the most important roles in our daily lives. “We use music when we are happy, sad, at funerals, weddings, exercise, parties and all other celebrations.” Wedge Park Primary School choir was directed by Erin Thomas and Jennifer Velja. Festival fun ready to ride again By Esther Lauaki There will be a jam-packed line-up of activities and attractions at this Saturday’s Djerriwarrh Festival. The free family event, which draws thousands of people to Melton Recreation Reserve each year, promises something for everyone. An estimated 35,000 people are expected to attend the festivities which will kick off at 11am with the annual street parade along High Street. This year’s theme is All That Glitters.

Other main attractions will include the Djerriwarrh Festival bonfire, market stall village, Sustainability Lane, pet expo, an international food offering, Lion’s Club Carnival and an incredible fireworks display to cap off the day. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the day was always a major highlight in the community’s calendar with people coming from far beyond the municipality’s borders to enjoy the day. “Many months of planning and organising have gone into creating this wonderful day

which is sure to entertain both residents, and visitors to the area,” Cr Turner said. The huge live music line-up on the main stage will be headlined by The Superjesus – one of Australia’s most popular and respected rock bands. Other acts include Pierce Brothers, Gena Rose Bruce, Bad Pony and Maddy Jane. Details: www.melton.vic.gov.au/djfestival Strap yourselves in for Melton’s Djerriwarrh Festival. (Melton City Council)

A neglected site at Melton Secondary College is undergoing a transformation. Year 9 students have been working on designing and constructing a garden to attract butterflies. The school is one of more than 200 to receive a grant from the Powerful Youth Projects program which aims to encourage young people to care for and learn about their natural environment. Supervising teacher Rod Cochrane said the students were “delighted” to receive the grant to start the project. “The garden has a wide range of native flowering plants which will attract insects, butterflies and nectar-eating birds,” Mr Cochrane said. “The garden is on a hill area which was until now a grassed area which had very low biodiversity and often was a harbor for weeds and often was just dry grass … it is almost

MY PLACE “Finders keepers” is a concept close to Colleen Downie’s heart. The long-time Melton resident chats to Esther Lauaki.

I have lived and raised our four children in Melton. How long have you lived in the area? For the past 17 years. What are you passionate about? For as long as I remember I have had a passion for buying and selling of unique items. The part of the business that is most interesting is all the research involved with every different item I come across. Through my research I get the opportunity to interact with local residents and listen and learn as each have their own story to tell. Tell us about your involvement with Abandoned Storage Solutions? Five months ago I decided to start my own business “Abandoned Storage Solutions” where I bid and buy abandoned/unpaid storage units and resell their contents. As you can imagine each unit’s contents can vary from new, PROVIDING collectable, households, tools and sometimes simply just strange items. EXCELLENT All the items get sorted and go into my shop.

I was given the most amazing opportunity last week to return a book to a local gentleman in Melton. It was a Roy Rogers book given to him in 1958 by his parents as a little boy. He had not seen his book in over 60 years. What other hats do you wear in the community? In the time I have lived in Melton I have had a great deal of involvement in volunteering with many organisations in our community such as The Gap on Graham, L2P Program, local basketball and fundraising for the Royal Children’s Hospital. I love the opportunity Melton gives its residents to be involved in so many aspects of our community from festivals, sports, youth programs and aged care.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir road tests an old favourite For as long as I can remember, 123 Nicholson Street has been occupied by a chicken shop. Has it ever been anything else? In any case, these days it is something to behold. Time To Eat is run by husband-and-wife team Harera and Lageal Amea. He boasts Lebanese heritage; she, Indian background. Backgrounds of their staff members range through Lebanese, Nepalese and Fijiian. On my visits here I have noted an equally diverse customer base that mirrors many of the eateries in the area, including those of the three ostensibly Turkish kebab houses. The United Nations ain’t got nuthin’ on us! The Time To Eat salad display features the expected gloopy coleslaw and seafood extender offering (familiar from chicken shops everywhere) – but also tabouli and a Greek salad. Another cabinet boasts a handsome range of Lebanese-style pizzas and pies. I take a spicy potato and a lamb pie home with me; they’re excellent. At the front of the shop are Lebanese sweets. The chicken here come in varieties such as lemon and herb and tandoori. My half chook, tabouli and chips costs a top-notch $16 with a can of soft drink. In truth, there is only the faintest whiff of tandoori flavour about my chicken, but it’s still pretty good – as is the tabouli. I see my chips being doused with some sort

TIME TO EAT A AT Address: 123 Nicholson Street, Footscray Phone: 0405 526 729 of chicken salt variant, missing by a millisecond the opportunity to get them with plain salt. But even that doesn’t phase, such a nice time am I having. Otherwise the chips are hot and crisp.

Summertime is looking mighty fine at this property where a fenced solar/gas-heated salt pool, as well as an eight-person separate inground spa, set up a family for plenty of fun times. Couple this with a covered pergola behind the double carport door and, voila, outdoor entertainment for the gang is accomplished. The house has been refreshed and updated, but window, architraves and skirts framed in natural timber remain true to the original home, as do the floor tiles and archways.

Entry is to a foyer with coat closet, to the left of which is a dual-zone grey-carpeted lounge-dining room which bends around to the kitchen. In the abutting casual meals area, there’s a long bar offset from the brekkie bench and running under a window – so clever for kids to use on busy mornings, or even do their homework with parent in earshot. The kitchen has top and bottom timber cupboards (a couple with leadlight panes), a wide fridge recess, white splashback tiles and a dishwasher, underbench oven and

gas cooktop. A generous European laundry, as well as a powder room, are incorporated into a vast family room flowing around from the meals area. It has a glass slider to a landscaped yard and pool beyond. The main bedroom, off the entry way, has a walk-in robe and en suite, while two more bedrooms share a hallway with spruced-up main bathroom and separate toilet. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan, which supplements evaporative cooling and two Rinnai energy-saver gas heaters.

Make sure your first impression counts In a world of increasingly sophisticated technology, there is still absolutely no substitute for attending an open house. Buyers need to physically experience the space, layout and feel of a home, and wise vendors work hard to turn that brief encounter into a lasting love affair. “The best video listing can still never take the place of seeing the reality, which can then start to build into an emotional connection,” co-founder of the The Agency, Ben Collier says. “It’s that moment you step through the door at an open home that you can truly begin to imagine what it might be like to live there.” It’s critical for sellers to work out the important elements for their open house. The main aim is to make a house look as spacious as possible, Distinct Sydney interior designer Batya Basson says. “How you show off that space with the placing of your furniture is the single most important thing. “Use your existing furniture – or take some out, or rent new furniture – to make the rooms look as big and as open as possible. Then create a homey, cosy feel with accessories, like plants, flowers, artwork and cushions.” Another vital element in making a home alluring is to ensure it is sparkling clean with a pleasant scent. Laing Real Estate managing director Vicki Laing has lost count of the number of openings where she’s had to take out insects, wipe surfaces and unlock windows to let in fresh air. “It’s amazing how many vendors have a film of grime over windows blocking out light, tidelines in the bath and a layer of fat on kitchen surfaces showing the exhaust system isn’t good,” she says. Decluttering is vital so visitors see how much room there is and can imagine their

own possessions in the home, Luki Scully, chief decluttering officer of Get Sorted, says. Vendors can hide their gear, store it somewhere else or hire a professional helper, like Scully, to do it for them.

“Lots of family pictures, books and personal possessions inhibit people from seeing themselves in the space,” she says. “If you see a well-organised home, a potential buyer feels they can, if they buy that home, be like that too.

“It’s all about aspirations.” This is an edited version of a story by Sue Williams on domain.com.au

“Sold in three weeks. I nearly fell off my chair.”

Darley’s dismal start

Briefs RDNL

Melton Centrals will enjoy something of a family affair among its netball coaches next year. Randy Pereira has been announced as the Centrals’ senior coach for an 11th straight year and will coach the A, B and C grades. His daughters, Taylor-Jane Pereira and recently retired A-grade star Bec Morabito, will coach the under-19 team together. In other Centrals coaching news, former Rockbank coach Lizzy Masterson has been appointed as a specialist coach. For information on the club’s netball trials, go to ow.ly/30BU30mqczd.

By Tara Murray Darley’s tough run in the Ballarat Cricket Association continued with yet another loss on Saturday, this time to North Ballarat. Having lost their opening four matches, the Lions were hoping to break through for their first win on Saturday. But their struggles with the bat continued and they weren’t able to post a high enough total to make a real game of it. The Lions looked to be travelling OK early on at 2-53, before losing 6-27 to crumble to 8-80. While they managed to bat out their overs, losing only one more wicket, the total of 9-130 didn’t look like it would be enough. Joel Cadman top scored for a second straight week, making 36, while three top order players got starts but weren’t able to go on with it. Ashley McCafferty was the destroyer for North Ballarat, taking 5-21. The Lions needed early wickets and wickets quickly, but it wasn’t to be the case. North Ballarat never looked in trouble as all of its top order got starts and were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over. They went on to make 4-133, hitting the winning runs with seven and half overs remaining. Ben Longhurst, Bradley Barnes, Ryan Ali and Corey Beaton were the wicket takers for the Lions. After five rounds, the Lions are one of two teams without a win, the other NapoleonsSebastopol. This week the competition switches to the T20 format for three rounds, with the Lions facing Ballarat-Redan at home. Other winners on Saturday were Mt Clear, Golden Point, East Ballarat and Wendouree.

SPORT Bacchus Marsh’s basketball production line pays off Four Bacchus Marsh players are in line for higher honours, having been selected in squads to play with some of the top country basketballers in the state. The four boys have been selected in the squads for the Southern Cross Challenge and Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup (ACJBC), which will earn them an insight into elite development and higher-level game play across the two elite junior tournaments held in January. Reece McGrath and Bailey Wilson have both been selected in the under-14 squad to play at the [AJCBJ] in Albury. Jackson Djatschenko has been selected in the under-15 Southern Cross Challenge, while Oliver Morin has been selected as an emergency in the under-16 AJCBJ squad. Playing as part of these squads is the first step in trying to qualify for Vic Country squads for

the national championships at under-16 and under-18 level. All four boys started playing basketball at Bacchus Marsh in under-8s. The boys have all been part of the Basketball Victoria Regional Academy Program this year and were selected for the championship squads after an intense training camp. McGrath and Wilson are both bottom-age players trying to make the under-16 Vic Country team for next year. Bottom-age athletes are selected for the Australian Junior Country Basketball Cup, while top-age athletes compete in the Southern Cross Challenge. McGrath said he was excited to be selected and was learning a lot, while Wilson said it was an honour to be selected and he is looking forward to gaining more skills and knowledge. Morin, who will be hoping to get a call-up to

Bulls win the top tussle By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh has tightened its hold at the top of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts competition with a strong win against Gisborne. The two sides entered the match as the top two teams and were undefeated. But it was the Bulls who fired. Bulls’ captain-coach James Lidgett said the players were enthusiastic going in to the game. “Playing against the best teams is always exciting,” he said. “It was good to get another good win.” The Bulls were sent in and looked to be cruising at 1-149 before some late wickets stemmed the flow and restricted them to 8-198. Lidgett was the main man, making 100. He was well supported by Alex Porter, who made 58. “Alex played his role perfectly,” Lidgett said. “We said before the game, if we play our roles we’ll be a chance to win … he just needed to get through the start and take the sting out of the ball and then rotate the strike.” Of his own performance, Lidgett said he couldn’t complain and he had been happy to contribute in such a fashion against one of the top sides. Lidgett said they would have liked to have a few more runs on the board, but were confident they could still get the win if the bowlers did their jobs. The Bulls got frequent wickets throughout the innings to stop the Dragons getting any partnerships. The Dragons were in trouble at 7-94 before a couple of their younger players dug in. But they fell short, finishing on 9-154. “We started pretty well and we got a couple of them cheap and thought we had broken them by that stage [the younger players coming together],” Lidgett said. “We didn’t want to let up. We did let a few more runs in than we would have hoped.” Jared Taylor was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-42. The win has the Bulls sitting at 5-0 after the first group of one-day matches. The two-day matches start this week, with the Bulls facing Woodend, who returned to the winners’ list on Saturday. Lidgett said they were looking forward to the two-day format. “The past few years, we’ve not been known for being particularly strong in the one-day games,” he said. “We’ve got things to improve and areas that we still need to execute. Now it’s time for the two-day cricket and, hopefully, we will do well.” In other matches, Diggers Rest Bulla was defeated by Romsey.

Romsey made 5-166 before restricting the Burras to 139. Kev Barker was the pick of the Burras’ players, taking two wickets and making 55. Other winners were Woodend, which

defeated Sunbury, and Sunbury United, which won with three balls remaining against Wallan. St Anthonys had a big win against Eynesbury Eagles in the Johnstone Shield, while Bacchus Marsh beat Gisborne.

Region of the BV Academy program, where all four boys train, said it was exciting for the boys to get this opportunity. She said being part of the program and then being selected in the championship squads is the only way to be selected for the Vic Country teams. “It is huge,” she said. “You have to be part of the academy program to be selected. “They all went really well at the Golden Nugget Camp. I’m looking forward to seeing them at the next stage.” Pitts said seeing players from some of the smaller associations make it to this level is exciting. She said all the boys travel to Ballarat each week to train. Tara Murray

Melton plans two more female sides Melton’s senior and junior football clubs are working together to develop female football at the Bloods. The two clubs are hoping to field sides from under-13s up to women’s this year, in a big development for the clubs. Bloods junior female co-ordinator Jessica O’Loughlin said they were planning to add an under-18 side as there were a number of girls too old for under-15s. She said Beau Beck from the senior club had approached her about helping to set up a women’s side. “We’ve had under-13s and under-15s for the last couple of seasons and a lot are going up into under-18s,” O’Loughlin said. “Beau contacted me about possibly starting a women’s side. “We’re working together to fill that gap and have somewhere where the girls can play. “The senior team is getting a lot of interest.” The Bloods have had two come-and-try days already, with plenty of support across the four sides. O’Loughlin said while they were still waiting for confirmation from AFL Goldfields about fielding all four sides, they were confident they had the numbers to be accepted to play under-18s and senior women’s sides. She said the teams would play in the AFL Goldfields competition and they hoped the games would be kept local. “The biggest thing is, the juniors are excited they don’t have to stop at junior level and then go elsewhere to play.” While the junior sides already have coaches, O’Loughlin said they were still after coaches and officials for the women’s side. The expansion of the program comes after a big year on and off field for the Bloods’ girl’s sides. Off field, they got to play at half-time of the Ballarat Football League senior men’s grand final, while Melton Toyota selected the club to have some of the girls work in the AFL grand final parade. For more information on joining the Bloods, contact Jessica (for juniors) at femalefooty@meltonjfnc.com.au or Beau Beck (for seniors) on 0433 879 935. By Tara Murray New Rockbank coach Lachlan Waterman is looking forward to the challenge ahead of him in the Riddell District Football League next season. Waterman was announced as the Rams’ new coach on Saturday, bringing a wealth of experience with him. Waterman has been involved at state league level in three states, including the VFL, while he’s also been an assistant coach at TAC Cup level. This year he was director of coaching at Ascot Vale Panthers in the Essendon District Football League. With the Rams celebrating their centenary season next year, Waterman knows the pressure is on. “It’s pretty exciting,” he said. “The fact it’s the centenary of the club, adds more to it. “I’m quite flattered to have been approached and then to have got the nod. “I’m under no illusions that there’s a lot of hard work to go.” Waterman knows the Rams are coming from a long way back after they finished bottom of the ladder with just one win this year. He said he was realistic about the club’s situation. “We’re a long way behind in resources and finances of some of the other clubs,” he said. “The main thing I’ve learnt from the likes of Judgey [Ken Judge] and Steve Malaxos is that every season you start at zero points. “It’s a clean slate, which is good. We’re

looking to be super competitive and don’t want to get belted every week. “After that, we’re not looking too far forward. We’re looking to get the guys fit and get morale up. “We’ll give a good crack at it in the first four weeks of the season and see where we go from there.” Waterman is already busy behind the scenes trying to recruit players. He said he was using his VFL contacts and they were hoping to add some more strength to the spine. “We’re actively recruiting players now and already speaking to players,” he said. “I’m on the front foot in terms of recruiting. I know who I would like to get, but whether we can get them is a different story.” The other aim for the Rams is to try and ensure they retain their playing group. Three players have already put in clearances to leave the club, including Alan Greenwood. Waterman is set to meet most of the playing group this week. He said he is ready to get down to business. “It’s a big challenge and not many get the opportunity to coach in the centenary year. “The big focus is all about celebrating the centenary season.” The appointment comes following the Rams announcing their netball coaching panel the previous week. Former AFL Goldfields netball coach of the year Alan Watson will coach the A and B grade sides. Pre-season training dates for the football will be announced soon.

Super ton for Centrals A blistering century from Andrew Cristofaro (pictured) has set up Melton Centrals for another win in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Shield division 5. Cristofaro made a massive 157, including 24 fours and five sixes, as the Centrals made 237. The next highest score from his teammates was 16. The bowlers then backed it up for Centrals, having Jacana in trouble at 8-56 at stumps on day one.

Melton South Royals also had a good day with the bat, making 4-307 in just 57 overs against Flemington. Flemington will resume at 2-48 this weekend. In the Charles Clark Shield division 4, Caroline Springs made 242 against Williamstown Congs. Sydenham-Hillside is 5-93 in reply to Maribyrnong Park St Marys’ 168. Tara Murray
