Sunny climbs into new role

(Esther Lauaki)

A Kurunjang dad dressed as superhero The Flash will be racing up 88 floors of the Eureka Tower to set an example for family and friends. Sunny Aulakh will take on the 11th annual Eureka Stair Climb challenge on November 25 which raises money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. This year will be the fourth time Mr Aulakh has taken part in the event. “It started as a bet with my mates that I couldn’t climb 88 floors of stairs,” Mr Aulakh said. “If I completed the event, they would change my nickname … My nickname referred to my shape and I wanted them to stop calling me by that name. “The first year I dressed as Thor, but my biggest mistake was that I had to carry too many accessories.” About 2,500 participants, ranging from social to elite competitors, are expected to sign up for the challenge on November 25 which involves scaling 1642 steps to the Eureka Skydeck at the top of the Eureka Tower. Protest hits Wombat bid By Esther Lauaki Protesters turned out on horseback, in four-wheel drives and on foot to rally against Wombat State Forest becoming a national park. About 700 bush users and environmental group members brought Gisborne’s town centre to a halt last Saturday (November 10) to stand against a move by Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) they fear will restrict public access to the park. The VEAC has been ordered by the state government to investigate the future use and classifications of Wombat, Wellsford, Mount Cole and Pyrenees Ranges state forests. A VEAC draft report’s recommendations include changing the status of Wombat State Forest by establishing the Wombat-Lerderderg National Park. The report is open for public comment until December 10.

Community members from the Wombat State Forest region including horse riders, prospectors, campers and “greenies” called on all state election candidates to declare their positions on the national park proposal, according to organisers. Rally organiser Tim Anderson, who has campaigned on Wombat State Forest issues since 1989, said “locking up” the forest would put an end to locals collecting firewood, dispersed camping, horse riding, dog walking and a range of other activities. “The Victorian Environmental Assessment Council’s proposal to make the Wombat Forest into a national park is the wrong direction for the Wombat Forest on environmental and social grounds,” Mr Anderson said. “The draft report is simplistic, rejects both science and our local communities and would be the worst outcome for the future of the Wombat Forest.

Protesters hits the streets of Gisborne on Saturday. (Supplied)

“The local community fought and overcame unsustainable logging in the 1990s that has left the Wombat Forest in a highly degraded condition that must be rectified if the forest is to be resilient. It is incredible just how passionate and connected the people of central

Victoria are to the Wombat Forest. It really is the People’s Forest.” But the Victorian National Parks Association supports the change in status, saying it would give the park the “protections, management and funding” it deserves. Director Matt Ruphel told Star Weekly recreational users would not be locked out. “State forests are generally put aside for extractive use and there’s no regulation or management of state forests other than for logging operations or large scale mining,” he said. “Changing to a national park excludes those very damaging activities.” “For everything else regarding recreational activities, camping, trail bike riding and four-wheel driving, the rules are exactly the same for state forests and national parks.” The VEAC draft report has already received about 640 submissions.

New park pledged for Toolern By Esther Lauaki A regional park 60 times the size of the MCG is planned for Toolern Creek as part of a major election promise. Labor will get on with planning and design work for a proposed Toolern regional park as part of a $150 million pledge to create new parkland and improve existing reserves throughout the state if re-elected later this month. The park, to be designed in consultation with the Melton council, will give families

in Toolern, Melton new space to enjoy the outdoors. Energy, environment and climate change minister Lily D’Ambrosio last week said the proposed Toolern Regional Park was part of Labor’s plan to create dozens of new parks across the state for suburbs that need them the most. “Labor will create thousands of hectares of new parks and bike and walking trails to make sure that no matter where you live, every family has a great local park to enjoy,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

‘‘

A new park will only enhance the area even - Steve McGhie further

’’

The announcement comes after a $10 million pledge to help local councils upgrade underutilised suburban space and local parks with new playgrounds, landscaping, toilets and picnic facilities, transforming them into better places for locals to enjoy. Melton’s Labor candidate Steve McGhie said

he was committed to ensuring that residents had access to local park, no matter where they live. “Toolern Creek is already enjoyed by locals who want to get outdoors, and planning for a new park will only enhance the area even further,” Mr McGhie said. Premier Daniel Andrews said the multi-million dollar investment represented the biggest boost to suburban parks in the state’s history and would create 6500 hectares of new parkland – equivalent to more than 170 Royal Botanic Gardens.

Pollies push promises for Melton station

A $250,000 safety upgrade could be on the cards around Melton train station and retail precincts. The opposition last week pledged to improve security and lighting at the station so shoppers and commuters feel safer – particularly at night. Liberal community safety spokesman Edward O’Donohue said the aim was to “get back in control of community safety”. Melton Liberal candidate Ryan Farrow promised to deliver the policies to keep commuters in Melton safe. “After 19 years of Labor in Melton, it’s time for real change and to put a local into government to get back in control of Melton,” Mr Farrow said. The announcement comes as Labor ramps up its campaign for electrification of the Melton line pledging $150 million toward a business case for the Western Rail Plan to be delivered in four years. The plan would include a fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat and the full separation of regional and metro train services. Table tennis It would mean Melton will be serviced by a Metro train. The monthly train patronage in Melton has grown from 75,000 passengers three years ago to 129,000 this year, according to the government’s ■ figures. Electrification of the railway line from Deer Park to Melton could triple its carrying capacity. Esther Lauaki

Labor revs up race track funding By Esther Lauaki Upgrades to motor sport tracks supporting young rev-heads to be competition-ready could be the pledge that gets Labor across the line with Moorabool voters this month. If re-elected, the party will invest $5 million for a Motor Sports Upgrades and Equipment Fund, providing grants of up to $500,000 to upgrade tracks and buy new equipment. The fund would be set up to help transform racetracks around Victoria improving safety with new barriers, and providing more facilities and amenities to increase participation.

The funding could also bring Moorabool council’s bid to make Fiskville a regional motor sport hub even closer. In May, the council pushed forward with plans for a regional motorsport track at the former Fiskville CFA training site. Remediation works at Fiskville are expected to be completed in the next two years and a proposal to turn it into a racing track has started to gain traction. Ballarat council and the state government spent $90,000 to develop a feasibility study for a regional racing precinct in 2015. Moorabool council set aside $100,000 in its

2018-19 budget for a business case for the site. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the council would chip in with Ballarat and Geelong councils, as well as the state and federal governments, to develop the business case. He expected it would cost about $400,000. “Every shire is facing the same problem with these [motor] sports which are difficult to host in town,” he told Star Weekly earlier this year. A plan has been formulated for a motor sport track but land was never formally identified for the project, Cr Tatchell said. In its feasibility study, Ballarat council found

the facility would need to be built outside of the municipality to accommodate the 240-300 hectares of land required. Fiskville was identified as a favourable location because it is government owned. Premier Daniel Andrews said the investment could go a long way to helping find the next Daniel Ricciardo. “The cost of upgrading Victoria’s racetracks can be expensive, that’s why we’re helping these clubs to grow for the future,” Mr Andrews said. “A large number of these affiliated clubs are based in regional areas and have been held back for too long.”

Rockbank Primary School pupils are hoping to see a boxes of birds outside their window someday soon. Pupils painted five nesting boxes for birds in bright colours as part of the Birds of a Feather project, run by Djerriwarrh Health Services and Melton Environment Group, teaching kids about conservation of local wildlife. The five nest boxes, crafted by Ballan’s Stan Bell, were designed to attract owlet-nightjars and rosellas to nest. Melton Environment Group president Daryl Akers said the boxes would not only be habitat for wildlife – but community art. “They were told to decorate them according to their own imaginations,” Mr Akers said. “The project will give the school children a sense of pride and ownership in their own local natural environment. “The decorated boxes are tributes to the

Tribute paid to shark death doctor The Western Health doctor killed in a shark attack in the Whitsundays has been remembered for his wonderful character. Dr Daniel Christidis, 33, had worked at Western Health since February as a widely respected surgical registrar, spending much of his time at Footscray Hospital. He died from the attack by a shark on Monday last week at Cid Harbour. Western Health surgery director Helen O’Connell expressed her great admiration for Dr Christidis. “Dan was a great person to work with and we are all richer for knowing him, sadly too briefly,” Professor O’Connell said. “He was compassionate with patients, going the extra mile to help them. “The consummate professional, especially for someone so young, he was already encouraging younger doctors to aspire to a surgical career and participate in academic projects. “At 33 he had a PhD and had started working as a urology registrar where his skills and capacity to work well with everyone were outstanding. Part of that was his enthusiasm and cheerfulness. “But he also had a capacity to find a clear path forward during conflict or a difficult clinical dilemma, such was his rare emotional intelligence.”

Ramsey runs for state By Esther Lauaki Veteran Melton councillor Sophie Ramsey will throw her hat in the ring for the state election. The longest serving Coburn ward councillor, and four-time mayor, announced her candidacy last Wednesday as voters prepare to head to the polls later this month. Cr Ramsey has lived in the municipality for about three decades and has served on the council for 18 of those years. She said her main motivation was to “shake things up” in the electoral race.

“We need to provide options for the voters in Melton to really shake it up so that our community can get the best outcome,” Cr Ramsey told Star Weekly. “I’m running because I really want to make a difference.” She said her ear has always been close to the ground when it comes to community concerns. “After 18 years on council I know how hard it is to advocate for things when you live in a safe seat,” Cr Ramsey said. “I’ll be campaigning for the funding for a 24-hour public hospital to be delivered now, widen the Western Freeway,

more police and zero tolerance on crime, opportunities for more local jobs and a focus on early delivery of schools. “I’ve been the mayor four times, deputy mayor as well and these are the concerns that our residents have raised time and time again. “Melton is such a growth corridor and we won’t be ignored.” Standing as an independent, Cr Ramsey said her other focuses include mental health services, early delivery of community infrastructure and the electrification of the Melton train line.

Melton schools in poll pledge By Esther Lauaki Four new Melton schools – to be opened within the next four years – have been announced as an election pledge by the state government. Education Minister James Merlino last week promised that Eynesbury Station and Rockbank North primary schools would be opened by 2021, followed by Bridge Road and Grasslands primary schools the next year, if Labor remains in government. The four planned schools would be in addition to Burnside Primary School which

is ready to open its gates in January and Springside West Secondary College which opened this year. The government also announced that each of the five schools would be joined by a new kindergarten. “Victoria is growing and we need to plan ahead to make sure that every child has access to a great local school,” Mr Merlino said. Premier Daniel Andrews pledged last week that, if his government is re-elected, kindergartens would be built next to the five planned primary schools across the

municipality to make school drop-offs easier for parents and to help keep siblings closer together. “This makes sense,” Mr Andrews said. “We’ve already said we’ll make sure all Victorian kids get an extra year of kinder. “And now we’re taking action so that the

school drop-off is just that little bit easier for parents.” Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz stressed the importance of education and schools across the region. “We are building new schools and upgrading many more because nothing is more important than our kids’ future,” Ms Kairouz said during a visit to Melton last week. Across the state, 45 schools are scheduled to open within the next four years, while a planning fund for another 55 schools will be established.

Tracking well for success A Mt Atkinson-based mentoring program to help get kids from migrant and refugee backgrounds on track for a bright future has received a boost. The Positive Mentoring Program is run by charity Edmund Rice Services and provides guidance and leadership training for young people aged between 12 and 15. It will benefit from a $60,000 state government grant over the next two years. The funding will mean 80 more boys and girls can join the program, which includes structured activities for young people experiencing difficulties at school or in their community. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz announced the funding last Wednesday and helped present families with refurbished bikes donated by the justice department’s west metro team. “The bikes were presented to these families from our local communities for them to use

at home and on the Mt Atkinson Community Centre’s popular and recently extended 12km of mountain bike tracks,” Ms Kairouz said on a visit to the area. Team building activities, group projects and activities such as horsemanship, mountain bike riding, bushwalking and art teach teamwork, assertiveness and patience. Edmund Rice Services chief executive Mark Monahan said about 1000 children have taken part in programs at the Mt Atkinson Community Centre in the past year. A range of programs are run at the centre for young people from across Melbourne’s western suburbs including leadership training and outdoor activities including orienteering, archery and mountain bike riding. West test for diabetes By Tate Papworth A revolutionary Western Health program is improving diabetes detection across Victoria. Western Health researchers have created screening software to enable the early detection of patients at high risk of diabetes or those unknowingly living with the disease. The program, CD IMPACT (Chronic Disease early detection and Improved Management in Primary Care project), has been trialled at more than 16 GP clinics in metropolitan and regional areas. It alerts doctors of patients with abnormally high blood glucose levels.

What we want to do is nip it in the bud

- Shane Hamblin

Diabetes is a significant problem in Melbourne’s western suburbs. According to Western Health, a third of all its inpatients are affected, while rates of diabetes in Melton and Brimbank local government areas are higher than the national average of 5.1 per cent – seven per cent and 6.5 per cent respectively. Western Health endocrinology and diabetes head Shane Hamblin said the results of the trial were promising. “We often see patients who come in with complications of diabetes, but what we want to do is nip it in the bud to manage it earlier and more efficiently,” Associate Professor Hamblin said. “This software program sits behind the scenes and prompts GPs to recognise that someone has diabetes.

“It brings it to the GP’s attention when they are often dealing with a lot of information, and, down the track, can help them build up a picture of how many patients have diabetes in that clinic.” He said it was hoped the program would be adopted by GP clinics around Australia

for a range of chronic diseases. The program is a collaboration between Western Health, Victoria University and the University of Melbourne. Wednesday, November 14, is International Diabetes Day, a global awareness initiative led by the International Diabetes Federation.

Wind farm fund bonus Seven Moorabool projects have come into a windfall courtesy of a community grants initiative. Bungaree Bowls Club, Clarendon and Yendon recreation reserves, Dunnstown Community Centre, Elaine and Lal Lal soldiers memorial halls and Millbrook Fire Brigade will share in $100,000 as part of Lal Lal Wind Farms’ benefit fund program. The money will go towards everything from kitchen and hall upgrades to audio visual equipment. Tom Irvine, of Lal Lal Wind Farms, said it was important for the group to give back to the community. “It was a pleasure to meet the grant recipients and engage in person with the community members who so generously volunteer their time and services to develop these important projects,” Mr Irvine said. A community reference group, comprised of residents, reviewed 14 grant applications and provided recommendations to Lal Lal Wind Farms to make the final decision. Community engagement manager Tracey Ward said the community would benefit from the fund each year for the 30-year life of the wind farms project. “We are so pleased that so many local groups are now able to move ahead with their projects,” Ms Ward said. Watergardens parking fix By Tate Papworth Years of parking pain at Watergardens station could soon be over. The state government has pledged to build more than 500 additional parking spaces at the station. The commitment is part of a plan to build 600 new and upgraded carparks across the west, including sites in Wyndham Vale, Werribee and Tarneit. The upgrades will include new lighting and CCTV for increased safety. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins welcomed the announcement. “We know how frustrating it is to find a carpark at the station – that’s why we will build over 500 carparks at Watergardens to help get locals where they need to go faster,” she said. Parking woes at Watergardens station have been the source of community frustration and political discussion for a number of years. The problem was compounded in 2016 when Watergardens Shopping Centre imposed four-hour parking limits to eliminate all-day parking. A community petition calling for a long-term solution to the parking problem was circulated soon after and received almost 650 signatures. In 2016, Star Weekly revealed that the state government was investigating ways to increase carparking around the station. An investigative group was chaired by Ms Hutchins and included representatives from Public Transport Victoria, VicTrack, Brimbank council and the owners of Watergardens Town Centre. The government said the additional carparks were part of its plan to deliver two new electrified metro rail lines – to Melton and Wyndham Vale.

Happy snapper catch for angler A Kings Park angler reeled in a whopping snapper after being caught in a storm off Altona over the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Frank Panzera headed out from Altona after work over the Cup weekend, planning to spend the whole weekend on the water. Instead, after two nights on Port Phillip Bay, he snagged the 9.8-kilogram monster. “After work on a Thursday night, my son dropped me off at Altona boat ramp,” he said. “I was meant to stay out on the water for three days just to have a fish. “The first night was very quiet, nothing happened. The following day it blew up a storm and I was in the middle of the bay. “It got to 45 to 50 knots and the safest thing for me to do was to just drop the anchor and ride it out.” He stayed put in his 7.5-metre boat. “I rode it out the whole day and then into the night,” Mr Panzera said. “Early in the morning, I decided to go out to the same spot where I had been and got rewarded by a 9.8 kilo snapper.” Sadly, Mr Panzera wasn’t entered in the Melbourne Cup Snapper Challenge, hosted the same weekend by the Hobsons Bay Sport and Game Fishing Club. “The biggest fish that got weighed in was 6.7 kilos, believe it or not,” he said. Enthusiastic students of the school in Caroline Springs set up vibrant stalls to showcase mental health agencies including Headspace, Cyber Safety Awareness and Beyond Blue. Guest speakers Harriet Cordner and Tegan Cunningham from the AFL women’s competition addressed students about their personal experiences with mental health and the support that is available. Springside assistant school principal, Kate Newytt,

described the importance of celebrating and educating students on mental health. “We see mental health as being a really important aspect of kids wellbeing,” she said. “It’s about raising awareness for mental health and to celebrate and raise awareness of agencies that students can be tapped into if they do need support around their mental health.” Joanna Catalano

Bombers plan life without pokies AFL club Essendon is vowing to become less reliant on pokies, despite the state government announcing new 20-year licences. The Bombers have made more than $23 million from poker machines in the past two years, behind only Hawthorn and Carlton. Those three clubs, as well as Richmond and St Kilda, have been handed new licences to operate poker machines until 2042. But Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell said the club was committed to reducing the amount of money they make from gaming.

“We have spoken to this publicly on a number of occasions – we endeavour to become less reliant on gaming as a revenue stream and we have invested heavily in building our strategy and investment divisions to work toward exploring opportunities,” Mr Campbell said. “That said, our venues employ more than 120 full and part-time staff in the communities where they operate, and we directly contribute investment into these communities to fund a range of sport and community activities.” Collingwood, Geelong, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs will sell their poker

machines, while North Melbourne has been industry leaders in abandoning potential revenue from the machines. Essendon has 89 poker machines at the Melton Country Club and 101 at Windy Hill. The club was expected to have its Melton venue’s lease extended by the council on November 12. While the Bombers have made significant money from gaming revenue, they are also the only Victorian club in significant debt. That debt – which rival clubs will argue was largely of their own making, following the supplements saga – was more than $11 million

in 2016. At the end of this year, it will be just over $4 million. “As a club we have been able to diversify our revenue streams more broadly and that has meant we have become less reliant on gaming,” Mr Campbell said. “We are challenging ourselves and discussions are under way with Moonee Valley city council around maximising the Windy Hill precinct, including how we activate various assets that the club has under its control.” – The Age

Search turns desperate Police believe an 88-year-old man missing since October 8 hitched a ride in Ballan, about 80 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, before disappearing. As the search for Albert Smith becomes even more desperate, his distraught family continue to plead for information. Moorabool Inspector Brendon McCrory said police had exhausted all its search resources, and turned to the public to help search for the elderly man. “We just need another sighting from which we might act,” he said. Inspector McCrory said it was believed Mr Smith was with someone, and urged that person to come forward. He asked residents to double-check their properties, including sheds and outbuildings. Mr Smith was last seen at the Ballan District Health and Care about 5.10am on October 8. It’s believed he left the facility before 6.30am

and was picked up in Old Melbourne Road a short time afterwards. Daughter Wendy said it was “upsetting” to think her father had been able to walk out of the healthcare centre. She described her father as a stubborn man who desperately wanted to return home. However, it was out of character for him to disappear in such a way, another daughter Helen said. “I think we’re more surprised that he was able to get out of the hostel ... that’s upsetting,” she said. “We’re getting more upset and more worried the longer this drags on. We’re worried he’s outside somewhere in pain.” Mr Smith requires pain and heart medication. Anyone with information should phone Ballan police station on 5368 1303. – The Courier

Learning to live after loss By Charlene Macaulay

‘‘

I feel really sad not to have my beautiful girl, but she wasn’t forming properly

’’

- Sofia Harris

(Damjan Janevski)

When Sofia Harris fell pregnant naturally at the age of 40, she was overjoyed. The western suburbs resident had a textbook pregnancy and in her anticipation to meet her little one, wrote a journal to her unborn child throughout the pregnancy. “I spent my whole life wanting to have a baby, and there I was – it was good,” she said. The first indication that something was amiss happened when Sofia’s son Laurence was born limp. “When I pushed Laurence out, we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl, so when he came out [my husband] Richard said ‘it’s a boy!’ “He got put [on my chest] for about three seconds before they just whisked him off me. “We watched and we watched and we watched and I remember there was a big clock up there and I was just thinking, he’s not uttering a sound.” More than 90 minutes after he was born, doctors came in to tell Sofia and Richard that Laurence was not responding. “They [hospital staff] were so surprised because there was no indication, there was nothing – he was eight pounds one, he was a big baby, he was healthy, there was nothing in any of our scans to indicate that there would have been a problem.” Even a post-mortem was unable to identify the reason why Laurence passed away, a fact that Mrs Harris said has been hard to swallow. Following Laurence’s passing, Mrs Harris said she felt an “unquestionable thirst” to try again and nine months later, fell pregnant with her son Jorge. Despite being terrified this time around, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Then when Jorge turned one, the pair started trying again and Mrs Harris fell pregnant with their daughter Emiliana. At the 12-week scan, it was discovered that Emiliana had Trisomy 18, an error in cell division that disrupts the baby’s normal pattern of development. The couple were advised to terminate, but decided to let nature run its course. Emiliana passed away at 24 weeks in the womb and was born still. “I still feel really sad not to have my beautiful girl, but I really can understand that she wasn’t

forming properly and it was a genetic thing and it makes so much sense,” she said. “I don’t love her any less, but it sits somewhere different to me. It’s not like Laurence.” After the loss of Emiliana, Mrs Harris wanted to try again. This time, she underwent IVF with genetic testing and with the one viable egg they had, the pair had son Gabriel. Mrs Harris, who shared her story as part of Pregnancy and Child Loss Month, said the support she had received at Werribee Mercy for all four pregnancies had been amazing.

She said the family marks Laurence’s and Emiliana’s birthdays. At Christmas, all four children have baubles with their names on them on the Christmas tree and Jorge and Gabriel receive presents from Laurence and Emiliana. Mrs Harris said it was important for her to talk about all four children. “The only way I’ve been able to process it and be healthy and have Jorge and then go on to have Emiliana and Gabriel was by talking and talking.”

Building a healthy west With Melton’s bid for a new public hospital taking shape, Tate Papworth takes an early peek inside Sunshine’s new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. A vitally important piece of infrastructure has taken shape on Brimbank’s skyline. Construction of the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is running to schedule and the building will be handed over to Western Health on March 30 next year. The $200 million building will include a total of 237 beds in new and refurbished accommodation, 20 maternity delivery rooms, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics. Western Health divisional director women’s and children’s services, Adele Mollo, said the new facility has a number of exciting features. “We’re creating a family-centred environment and an environment for women, children and babies that facilitates best care,” she said. “The most exciting part about that is for the first time in a really long time across the state, we’ll see a brand new neonatal intensive care unit. “So we’ll be increasing two neonatal intensive care beds and adding additional special care nursery beds. That enables women and their babies to be kept together.” Sunshine Hospital maternity staff members have been pushed to their limits in recent months, with the hospital delivering a record number of babies. Ms Mollo said the new facility will vastly expand the hospital’s capabilities. “This gives us the ability to birth up to 7020 babies a year,” she said. “This year we birthed nearly 5,800 and we had a couple of record months where we had 500 babies born. That’s enormous for us.

16 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 13, 2018

“Our current infrastructure is constrained to be able to deliver that, but this new building will enable us to go above 7000 births.” Ms Mollo said the new facility will also be a massive boost for employment. “We’re looking at an enormous amount of recruitment over the

next six months,” she said. “Not only from a medical, midwifery and nursing point of view, but also from a support services perspective. “When you open a new building, you need more cleaners, security, administration, all the back of house and staff for theatre and

pharmacy. “It’s creating an enormous amount of jobs in the west – it’s a really exciting time for the west from a workforce point of view and a patient care point of view.” In recent weeks focus on site has shifted to fit-out activities with sub-contractors on site

into the late evening and weekends. In July, the project reached a milestone of two million man hours. Western Health senior operations project manager Sue Valentine said the building has been designed to provide convenient flow between it and the main hospital campus. “The main thing about the design of the building is that it’s still part of the main Sunshine Hospital campus,” Ms Valentine said.

‘‘

… it’s a really exciting time for the west

’’

- Adele Mollo

“We will work as one hospital. The design of the interior is done in such a way that the patients, physicians and families can comfortably move through the building and staff can flow between the main campus and Joan Kirner.” Minister for Health Jill Hennessy said it was exciting to see the building taking shape. “After celebrating the building’s topping out earlier this year, we can now see the façade and interior of this world class hospital quickly taking shape,” Ms Hennessy said. “When it opens next year, women and children in the west will no longer need to travel far from home to get the best possible care in the very best facilities. “Joan Kirner fought passionately to improve healthcare for the women and children of the West – and she would be so proud that her legacy will live on forever in this new hospital.”

MY PLACE Allies Whakataka has got stories galore and a heart for the community. The avid sports fan and new president of the Melton Warriors Rugby Union Club talks to Esther Lauaki. We moved to Melton because it was somewhere different and we really wanted to live here. We’re originally from the Tolaga Bay on the east coast of New Zealand. How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in Melton nearly nine years. What are you passionate about? Rugby. I loved to see kids happy. When I look in the rear view mirror after a game, I watch them talk about how they played and it takes me back to my days. When I was young, we had no boots and scrunchy grass under our feet. We’re born and bred to play rugby in New Zealand. Tell us about your involvement with the Melton Warriors Rugby Union club. I’ve been involved since 2014. I have three children, two girls and a boy, that all play rugby and I’m really proud of that. I was pretty sporty myself and my kids have adopted that too. I’ve been coaching the under-6s all that time. We’ve picked up a few lessons and made some changes in the club. As the newly elected club president, what’s your vision for the club? I want to see us thrive. Our numbers are starting to boost up. I want unity and family

in the club. We would like to see more people in the community involved. My vision is to see people support and share the load. If you want them to have a future in rugby, it’s up to us to show them the way. What other hats do you wear in the community? I also coached the Melton Stallions under-10s basketball team. I volunteered running a boys’ youth program at The Gap where we painted bikes and did them up for the boys to take home and ride. What’s something people don’t know about you? I like diving for shellfish. I’ve been stabbed by a stingray right in the chest – same place as Mr Irwin. The barb snapped right off in my chest, but I survived. People must have been shocked to see this Maori guy walking up the beach like that. What do you love about Melton? It’s the lifestyle, the country feel and the people. We feel the support from the whole community. What would you like to see improved?

(Dennis Manktelow)

What’s your connection to Melton?

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir tries an old favourite in a new location The Lost Footscray FB page recently sported a photograph of the Middle Footscray portion of Buckley Street – taken before the houses there were demolished. And there it was – the original Pandu’s. When I showed the pic to Bennie, he proclaimed: “That place was cool!” Pandu’s, since then, has moved on to swisher, more roomy premises on Barkly Street – and we remain sporadic customers. Truth is, though, the spicy buzz we used to get from Indo-Chinese food has faded. Instead of the dry, crunchy, zingy stuff we firstly loved, our experiences of recent years seem to have been more of sodden and gloop. But the expanded Pandu’s spreads its menu far wider – there’s biryanis, dosas and much, much more. Including a bargain-priced weekend breakfast/brunch vegetarian buffet we are keen to try. It’s beaut – and at $10.99 a super deal. And it’s a hit, too, with the Indian community – closing in on 1pm on the Saturday we visit, Pandu’s is doing brisk trade. The food is arrayed in a row of cookers and other containers. There is – this is a buffet, after all – heaps and heaps of it. Some of it is familiar, some not so. The staff are working hard so the run-through explanation we are given passes in a bit of a blur and I struggle to take it all in. Certainly, the three of us go nowhere near trying all that is on offer. Partly that is because

PANDU’S Address: 351 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 8307 0789 we’re old and wise enough to discard the ever-present buffet temptation of going hog wild and loading up our plates, though we all make second visits to the line-up. Being a huge fan of both pooris and papads, I revel in a bottomless supply of both. And the smooth, pale yellow vegetable curry that teams with the pooris is a treasure. Plain, unstuffed dosas are part of the Pandu’s buffet set-up, but they are brought around separately by the staff – thus avoiding sogginess!

Offering a rural lifestyle with the benefits of being close to Bacchus Marsh town centre, this property could be just what you’ve been looking for a permanent move or weekend getaway place. Set up as a permaculture farm, the property of about 10 hectares offers beautiful easterly views across the Bacchus Marsh basin and is home to plentiful bird and wild life. The energy efficient house has three bedrooms. The country-style kitchen has timber cupboards and multiple windows to let in natural light. It has LPG cooking and a hot water service. Other features include a dam, veggie patch, warm water treatment system (gravity-fed), wood lot, fruit and nut trees. There is a 7.9 x 14.8 metre Colorbond steel-framed shed with concrete floor, a wood shed, multiple water tanks, CCTV and secure parking for six cars.

Renovated and ready to go, this nicely presented brick residence is ideal for family living. On a block of about 640-square-metres, the house has freshly painted interiors that look great and have well-chosen splashes of darker tones. The 2pac kitchen looks smart with white and dark gloss, stone benchtops, modern appliances and glass splashback. It overlooks an open-plan meals and living zone that has timber-look flooring and basks in plenty of natural light. A large, carpeted lounge has a wood fire. Of the four bedrooms, one has built-in robes and the main has a walk-in robe and en suite. The secure backyard has a brick-paved pergola, established grass and two sheds. Other features include gas wall heating, a split-system, box airconditioner and plenty of storage. There is a double carport. Close to shops, schools, transport and Western Freeway access.

It has plenty of room for a growing family, with a neutral colour scheme throughout and tiles in common areas making cleaning up a breeze. The open-plan hub incorporates a lounge area, meals area and a functional kitchen with lots of storage and bench space and 600mm stainless-steel appliances. A second tiled living zone and a study are handy additional spaces. The three carpeted bedrooms have built-in robes, the main with walk-in robe and en suite. The backyard has lawn for the kids to play on, as well as scope for new owners to get creative. Ducted heating and split-system cooling ensure temperatures stay comfortable year-round. A single garage takes care of secure parking.

With many possibilities, this property is likely to generate a lot of interest from all types of buyers. On a block of about 600 square metres, it’s in a great central location close to schools, shops, transport and parks. With potential as a dual occupancy site (STCA), a solid renovation project, investment or step onto the property ladder, this one can do it all. The house has two bedrooms with built-in robes, a lounge room with gas heater and wall air-conditioning unit, and a meals area adjacent to the kitchen. WEIR VIEWS 7 Embleton Chase, 3338 Barry Plant Melton: 9746 6000

Price: $549,000

On about 595 square metres and within five minutes or less of the station, Station Square shopping centre anchored by Coles, and Exford and Melton South primary schools, this bright house is buffed to a turn and ready to welcome new owners. It has the typical colour palette of greys and white, with roller blinds on windows, and each room a good size and attracting lots of light.

4

Private sale

The layout is also typical, with a carpeted open lounge room off the entry hall which has neutral floor tiles that continue on to the living hub. The smart kitchen in here, with an open walk-in pantry decked out with cupboards rather than open shelves, has a stone-topped island bench for at least four, grey splashback tiles, a dishwasher and 900mm cooker. Opposite the lounge room, the main

bedroom with split-system has a walk-in robe and a sleek and spacious en suite with dual basins atop a stone bench, as well as a twin shower. Remaining fitted bedrooms share another hallway with main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry. An integrated alfresco area looks out to back and side yards with expansive lawns that will invite kids to have a play or kick of a ball.

2

2

Garden beds line fences and the whole area is an oasis of green, rarely seen with today’s blocks. The drive-through double garage has internal access via the pantry, possibly one of the most useful layout ideas to hit the market. All finished and ready to go, this one will readily attract families. Carole Levy 23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 13, 2018

SPORT Centrals’ women’s team ready for new challenge Melton Centrals’ women’s side is looking to get back to their roots for next season. One of the longest running sides in Melbourne’s north-west, Centrals’ Janelle Martin said they wanted to strip things back and rediscover why many of the team started playing football. Centrals have re-signed a number of the long time players and have a revamped leadership group and committee. “We want to rebuild the club back to the way it used to be when I set up the club,” Martin said. “A great family club and we want to get back to grass roots football and what it was.” Martin said they were looking for players of all ages to join. She said while all players were welcome, they were hoping to pick up some younger players who can help lead the next generation.

“We need young blood,” she said. “A lot of the players we have lost are older players and half the team has been playing in masters football. “If you have kids, beautiful, there’s always kids around the club.” Centrals finished sixth in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition last season. Martin said they would again be playing in an AFL Goldfields competition, but were still unsure of the format of the competition. Centrals have introduced a player incentives program for next season. Every player can apply for the program, which includes reduced fees and uniforms. Martin said there had been a bit of interest in the program from new and old players. “We thought the incentive program might be a way to get some of the younger girls involved. “Football can be pretty expensive.

“We’ve got some girls who were looking at leaving, that are now are coming back. I’ve already got text messages and emails about the program.”

Titan import’s top job By Tara Murray Ben Trudel is enjoying the challenge of being a big part of the North Western Titans’ set-up this season in Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3. As the Melton club’s first import, the Canadian was expected to take a leading role on and off the field – and he’s doing just that. Trudel said that after experiencing a bit of culture shock early on, he is feeling at home. “I was looking to play baseball in Australia in general, especially Victoria,” he said. “I had quite a few offers.” Trudel was impressed with the approach that came from Titans coach Danny Hymes. “It was a challenge that I found was more important than playing at the highest level at the moment,” Trudel said. “The challenge of having a chance to be a leader and influence the team to get to that next level.” Trudel said after a slow start to the season, the playing group was starting to get some good chemistry. Trudel has taken on the role as the main pitcher, but can also play in the outfield, adding some flexibility to the side. On Sunday, the Titans had a tough day out against the Pakenham Pumas. The Pumas won 13-2. The loss leaves the Titans with just one win from seven matches and sitting in fifth position. As well as playing for the Titans, Trudel is coaching the club’s under-12 side. He said playing at the Titans and in Australia is a lot different from his recent playing stint in China. He has also played in South Korea. “It’s day and night – the difference is huge,” he said. “I’m used to playing professional with a lot more training … but I’m loving it so far.” Trudel said baseball had always been a big part of his life since starting playing tee-ball as a three-year-old. “My dad, my uncle all played baseball,” he said. “It’s a sports family. I’ve been playing baseball for more than 20 years of my life.” Trudel said his aim for the rest of the season was to continue helping the Titans improve. He said he would love to continue to play in Australia after this season. “To be the level we want to be right now, we need to keep improving and get more experience on the field every week,” he said. “I’m always happy to help the club. It’s my first gig in Australia and I appreciate what the club has offered me this year.” Ben Trudel is loving life with the North Western Titans. (Shawn Smits)

Martin said they hoped next year was a year they could use to build the future of the side. She said the team was also looking at possibly amalgamating with the men’s club. “Hopefully we can build something and we’re do everything we can to get the message out there,” she said. “The youth girls will be training with us and we’re trying to bring them in and be more involved. “We’ve got girls from all ages groups coming through, so it’s an exciting time for the club.” Centrals start preseason on Wednesday (November 14) at 6.30pm. Anyone interested can contact Janelle on 0413 148 807 or email the club on meltoncentralswfc@hotmail.com. Tara Murray

Lions enjoy a return to form Melton has grabbed a much-needed win in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west competition. After dropping two straight games, the Lions looked at the game with Oakleigh and next week’s game against Caulfield as crucial. Against Oakleigh, the Lions made a move back towards their best cricket with a dominant win. Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said the performance was a step up from the previous two rounds. “The last two games, we’ve got into winnable positions, before we lost our way,” he said. “We knew they are a good side and we were in a dominant position all day.” The Lions bowled Oakleigh out for 80 – an effort Geisler said the club would take every day of the week. With the bat, the Lions had little trouble getting the runs, finishing 2-82.

“We won the toss and the conditions suited us,” he said. “We put them under pressure straight away and continued on from there. “To pass the score two down was good as well.” The Lions’ bowlers shared the job around with Ash Sweet taking three wickets and Brad Jones, Jake Charge and Geisler taking two each. Anthony Gale continued his good form by top scoring with 39. Gale, who the Lions planned to play in the second XI this season, is the side’s top scorer in the top grade this season. Geisler said they would continue to take it week to week in terms of which side Gale would play in. “Butch keeps doing his job,” he said. “One of our Sri Lankan imports has missed the last couple of games with an eye issue and someone else was missing on Saturday. “Butch just continues to fill a role. He’ll do whatever is best for the club and just loves

playing cricket … he’s making it hard for selectors [to not select him in the first XI].” Ben MacRae finished 27 not out. The win moves the Lions to 2-2 and seventh on the ladder. They are one of four teams with the same points. Despite the comprehensive win, Geisler said the Lions were still not at their best. He said they dropped a couple of catches and had at least another level of improvement in them. The Lions will have to be on their game this weekend when they take on Caulfield in a Saturday-Sunday match at Caulfield. Geisler knows the match is a vital one. “It’ll give us an indication of where we are at,” he said. Tara Murray Anthony Gale top scored for the Lions on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)

Scrappy game enough for a welcome win

Caroline Springs’ Ben Cusick attempts to run out Williamstown Congs batsman Mitchell Alexander. (Mark Wilson)

Short, sharp and painful By Tara Murray A devastating spell of 10 overs after tea sealed a big win for Caroline Springs against Williamstown Congs in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Charles Clark Shield division 4 competition. After making 242 on day one of the match, the Falcons were slightly on the back foot early on day two. The Congs got to drinks without losing a wicket and still had plenty of wickets in the shed at tea. Falcons captain Kane Sevior decided to send in spinners Mujtaba Hussain and Gayashan Weerasekara from both ends after the break. The move would be a match winning one, as the Falcons took seven wickets in 10 overs to end the game. The Congs were bowled out for 133. Sevior said it was a turnaround of fortunes late in the day. “We didn’t feel like we were bowling badly, we just needed some luck,” he said. “Coming into tea, I thought the game would 36 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 13, 2018

go down to the wire. “After tea we started with the spinners as it was turning. We thought we could restrict them a little, but were able to clean them up in 10 overs.” Hussain and Weerasekara took four wickets each. Weerasekara had already made 74 on day one. The win is the Falcons’ second for the season. With a lot of new sides in the division, Sevior said they were more than happy with two wins from three games. “Because it’s a new competition, it’s so close,” he said. “One team has three wins and there’s three teams with two wins. “You don’t know where you sit and who is the most competitive. “We want to get a lot of wins early on to set ourselves up. We’ve got a number of home games coming up.” The Falcons this week face St Andrews and Sevior said this was one of the teams they were unsure about. He said hopefully they can continue to build

some momentum this week. Meanwhile, Sydenham-Hillside managed to avoid an outright defeat against Maribyrnong St Marys. St Marys made 168 in its first innings, before bowling the Storm out for 133. St Marys then made 138, giving it a lead of 178. The Storm were 9-116 at stumps. In division 5, Melton South Royals and Melton Centrals both recorded outright wins. After making 4-307 on day one, the Royals bowled Flemington out for 67 and then 45 to claim all points available. The Centrals finished Jacana’s first innings early on day two, bowling them out for 82. They then bowled them out a second time for 165, giving the Jaguars a second innings lead of 10 runs. Centrals made the runs without losing a wicket. Meanwhile, Caroline Springs women’s side won its first game in Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Competition. For more on the win, go to www.starweekly. com.au/sports

Bacchus Marsh Lions did not put in their best performance on Saturday night against the Terang Tornadoes, but it was enough for a win in the Country Basketball League south west competition. The Lions started well and had an 18-point lead at half-time as they controlled the game. The Tornadoes raised their game in the second half to put more pressure on the Lions. And while the Tornadoes won the second half, the Lions took home the points with a 98-88 winning score. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben said they welcomed the win. He said skipping training on Melbourne Cup Day seemed to have had an impact on their game. “It wasn’t necessarily a great win, to be honest,” he said. “We played our game in the first half and then went to sleep in the second half. “Our defensive intensity was really good and our fast transition game plan ran better in the first half. “They put more pressure on us [in the second half].” Max Beaumont led the scorers for the Lions with 23 points. It comes after he scored 42 points the week before. Feben said the general performances and Beaumont’s development was what their program was all about. “He came with a similar mindset as the week before,” he said. “He’s grown with confidence and is coming into his own at the moment. “We’re delighted with how he’s playing. He played at a high level at juniors and now he’s doing it at a senior level.” Beaumont was one of five Lions’ players to score double figures in the win. Jordan Kirk continued his good form scoring 18 points, while Billy Feben and Jason Christian scored 12 points, and Tyler Collins chipped in with 12. Jeff Feben said Billy and Kirk were bringing other players into the game. “It was a good overall contribution.” The win moves the Lions to a 5-2 record and puts them fourth on the ladder. They face bottom side Warrnambool Seahawks this week on the road. Feben said it was a winnable game considering where both teams were on the ladder. Tara Murray

Kia’s Rio gets a major revamp By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia Rio competes in one of the most hard-fought sales segments in Australia so it made sense to give a full-on revamp with major mechanical changes to give it more weapons to fight with. The entry level Rio S is unchanged, with a 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Much bigger news is that the Rio Si and SLi models have been replaced by a new Kia Rio Sport. It has 17-inch alloy wheels and, importantly, a six-speed automatic that replaces the four-speed. It has cruise control, leather trim on the steering wheel and gear lever, as well as powered folding door mirrors. At the top of the range, the Rio GT-Line has a sporty 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol with 88kW of power and 172Nm of torque. It now drives the front wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. GT-Line features a body kit and a full-on range of LED lights: daytime running lights, position lamps, foglights and rear lights. Infotainment uses a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth as well as Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. Safety is increasingly important to buyers in this class as many are youngsters and their parents are concerned about them. Standard features on all include ABS, ESC, VSM, reverse parking sensors, rearview camera and six airbags. The GT-Line adds AEB and Lane Keep Assist to the passive safety features. Kia’s 7-Year Warranty, 7-Year Capped Price Servicing and 7-Year Roadside Assist is a major plus for the Rio, indeed for all vehicles in the South Korean range. Pricing starts at $16,990 RRP for the manual and $17,490 drive away for the automatic.
