Hospital a priority: new MP Labor has secured Melton and retained Buninyong and Kororoit after Saturday’s election. Newcomer Stephen McGhie will replace retired Don Nardella in the Melton seat. Mr McGhie, a former ambulance union head, was a last-minute nomination for Labor after endorsed candidate Justin Mammarella left the race in October. By late Sunday, Mr McGhie had polled 54.04 per cent of the vote after preferences, while the Liberal Party’s Ryan Farrow received 45.96 per cent. After first preference votes, Mr McGhie led with 12,579 votes, ahead of Mr Farrow (6764), Independent Ian Birchall (4254), Independent Bob Turner (3664), Independent Jarrod Bingham (2474), Independent Sophie Ramsey (2094) the Greens’ Harkirat Singh (1564), Animal Justice Party’s Tania Milton (924), Democratic Labour Party’s Victor Bennett (920), Independent Daryl Lang (777), Independent Grant Stirling (380) and Victorian Socialists’ Ron Guy (232). Mr McGhie described it as “a great result”. “We had a little over three weeks to campaign, but we were confident. Although the Liberals were our biggest opponent, the candidates who supported a hospital for Melton also ran a very strong campaign and people gravitated towards them. “Clearly, there’s a message in there that they want a hospital in Melton.” Mr McGhie said that, while he was happy to have secured the seat, there was “a lot of work to be done”. “I think that the priorities in
Bacchus Marsh are different to what the priorities are in Melton,” he said. “Education, health and, especially, road congestion, are key issues in Bacchus Marsh. Sporting facilities, such as an aquatic centre and basketball courts and football ovals, are all issues. “I come from a health background and worked in the Melton-Bacchus Marsh area as a paramedic … I’m an advocate for that idea of getting a public hospital built in Melton.
‘‘
Clearly … they want a hospital in Melton
’’
- Stephen McGhie
“The Labor government has put up $2.3 million to plan it and I think that is a positive move … I will be advocating for a hospital in this corridor, but not to the detriment of the Bacchus Marsh hospital which the Labor government has also put substantial funding into.” The Melton electorate takes in Bacchus Marsh, Brookfield, Darley, Exford, Hopetoun Park, Long Forest, Melton, Melton South and Merrimu as well as parts of Eynesbury, Kurunjang, Maddingley, Melton West and Parwan. Mr McGhie said that he was considering relocating from Buninyong to live in his electorate. “I want to be accessible to residents and I hope to have a pop-up office in Bacchus Marsh at least once a week,” he said. Buninyong voted in newcomer Michaela Settle to replace retired MP Geoff Howard and Kororoit’s Marlene Kairouz was re-elected. Full details: starweekly.com.au

Creekside talent shines Creekside College has talent. The Caroline Springs school took out a swag of awards at the annual Science Talent Search competition which is open to all primary and secondary students in Victoria. Creekside College had 12 students participate – four of whom took home prizes. The school’s primary science teacher Nichole Fraser said it was a fantastic achievement. “To have four of our 12 entrants take out … awards is a testament to the commitment of our students,” she said. “The fact that our winners were in prep and in grades 1, 2 and 3 was also amazing.” Shudham (prep), Aarya (grade 1), Greneth (grade 2) and Ethan (grade 3) were the school’s award winners. Big boost for Bacchus’ SES
By Esther Lauaki Kyllie Garrett and her mates are going full ocker in their fight against multiple sclerosis. The mum of two was diagnosed with the neurological disease in 2012 and has since raised more than $15,000 towards medical research. She will host a Bogan Bingo fundraising party at Tabcorp Park on Saturday, December 8 – but this time, the money will help her get to Russia to participate in a potentially life-changing clinical trial.
‘‘
I was in the fittest point in my life at the age of 29 - Kyllie Garrett
’’
It will cost about $120,000 to cover the treatment and expenses for the 35-day trial. Ms Garrett, who plays football for Melton Centrals and lives in Ballarat, was doing all the right things to live a healthy lifestyle when she copped the “sickening diagnosis” of MS. “I was in the fittest point in my life at the age of 29,” Ms Garrett said. “I had just hit my goal weight after losing more than 50 kilograms when I collapsed in the shower. “Initially, I had dizziness, confusion, fatigue, constant migraines and disorientation … it progressed until I was unable to drive or work and my health rapidly deteriorated.” She manages numbness, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, vertigo, nerve pain and a range of co-ordination issues daily. Since her diagnosis, Ms Garrett has been trialing a range of treatments, but her health continues to decline.

“I’m scared about this treatment [in Russia], but it is clear that it is the best chance I have of being able to live my life normally again with my family,” she said. “Being the only income earner for the household, any additional funds would be used to cover my time off work so that I can recover.
NEWS
“My kids are so young … it would be nice to know that finding a cure for MS would mean I don’t have to explain to them why mummy can’t do certain things with them.” The Bogan Bingo night will start at 7.15pm on December 8 at Tabcorp Park. Tickets cost $35 through trybooking.com/yxzu.
Bacchus Marsh State Emergency Service is better equipped to help locals in strife thanks to a $600,000 boost. The funding, provided by insurance partner AAMI, has been used to buy tools and equipment to assist crews when dealing with storm-related damage such as removal of fallen trees and homes impacted by severe weather. Bacchus Marsh SES volunteers responded to 145 calls for assistance in the past year with 71 of those related to storm damage. Unit controller William Robson said that the funding has assisted volunteers to support the Bacchus Marsh community when storms hit. “It’s really terrific to have AAMI backing our volunteers, so we can support the Bacchus Marsh community,” Mr Robson said. “Their valuable contribution and their support allows our volunteers to have access to the best training and equipment to support the Bacchus Marsh community before, during and after an emergency.” He said that hydraulic rescue tools, power tools, generators and lighting have already been purchased. Lachlan Rees, of AAMI, said the organisation was delighted to support VICSES and the Bacchus Marsh volunteers. “Their hard work and dedication to help the community before, during and after an emergency is critical,” Mr Rees said. Long history, big party Rockbank Primary School has celebrated its 150th anniversary with events evoking bygone eras. The school opened on October 12, 1868, with 50 students – and events have been flowing throughout October and November as Melton’s oldest school celebrates. On Saturday, November 17, the school held a major celebratory event attended by about 1000 people. Pupils entertained throughout the day, with each of the five classes examining 30 years of school history and performing a dance reminiscent of those times. A time capsule from 1988 was unearthed, its newspaper articles and letters revealing predications for the next 30 years from pupils
at the time. Current pupils created a new time capsule that will be opened in 2043. The anniversary festivities also included an art show and auction of pupil works and tree planting in the school grounds. School principal Darryl Spiteri said the celebrations were important to members of the school community, past and present. “I think the anniversary is a really important occasion and we wanted to make sure the community celebrated that,” he said. “It was a wonderful celebration. “I’m very honored to be the principal at a time of such historical significance for the school.” Joanna Catalano

Developers unveil Eynesbury bid By Esther Lauaki A pair of developers have big plans for Eynesbury – more housing and shopping and enhanced road links between the township and Wyndham. Resimax Group announced last week it would embark on a joint venture with Hyde Property Group on a 218-hectare parcel of land in Eynesbury. Resimax director Ozzie Kheir said he hoped development of the land would shape the entire township and fast-track the development of

Green Hill and Mt Mary roads and connections from Eynesbury to Wyndham. “Eynesbury is one of the most exciting developments in Australia, both in terms of its
scale and potential end use – the opportunities are endless,” Mr Khier said. “When you visit Eynesbury you can’t help but fall in love with the place … from the protected native vegetation that sprawls the estate, the 18-hole professional golf course and the heritage bluestone homestead with cosy fireplaces, you instantly feel at home. “In years to come, I have no doubt Eynesbury will be known as a premium housing estate with a great community and we look forward to working closely with the existing Eynesbury community to re-invigorate the township and
open up the unique Eynesbury lifestyle to a whole new group of residents.” Russell Jackson, chief of Hyde Property Group, said the township had enormous potential and he hoped that the joint venture would “ramp up delivery of key infrastructure” and improve connectivity for Melton. Melton planning services manager Bob Baggio said future development by the joint venture would require new planning permits and council had not yet received any. Eynesbury is currently home to 2400 residents.
Many voices speak up Removing stigma and shame associated with violence against women will be the aim of an upcoming event in Caroline Springs. The I Am Her Voice free, youth-focused event, on Sunday, December 9, will aim to educate Melton women about domestic violence and discrimination. Sarah Akamo, founder of Grace: West Melbourne Families Against Domestic Violence, said the event would amplify survivor voices through the sharing of their stories. “During the event, they will hear from key youth-centred individuals in the community, including family violence advocates, experienced youth workers and professionals who will be a part of a forum engaging in a narrative with the next generation about ending violence against women,” Ms Akamo said. “The effects of family violence are prevalent in many children nowadays, whereby they
believe violence against women to be normal behaviour. “I Am Her Voice will not only be a forum to facilitate discussion, but will challenge gendered stereotypes, promote gender equality and encourage men and boys to end violence against women and girls.” Speakers will include Matt Williams, co-founder of the Chin Up Project; Natasha Toffa of the Women’s Unity Movement; and Elena Grace, a western suburbs advocate and survivor of domestic violence. I Am Her Voice, including afternoon tea, will run at the Mercure Hotel in Caroline Springs from 2-5pm on Sunday, December 9. ‘Trolley man’ to stay out of CBD Bourke Street’s ‘Trolley Man’ has vowed to have a good crack at staying out of trouble after being granted bail. Michael Rogers was thrust into the spotlight after ramming knife-wielding attacker Hassan Khalif Shire Ali with a shopping trolley as he lunged at two police officers with a knife. Now he has been banned from central Melbourne as part of his strict bail conditions after facing Melbourne Magistrates Court on November 17. Rogers, 46, turned himself in to police at West Melbourne. He was subsequently charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft and committing an indictable offence while
on bail. Melbourne Magistrates Court heard Rogers had broken into a city cafe the day before the November 9 Bourke Street attack and stolen $500 from a till and a basket. He is also accused of bike theft. Police had opposed bail, arguing there was an “unacceptable risk” of Rogers committing further offences. However, magistrate Bob Kumar granted bail, saying the risk could be overcome with stringent conditions. After leaving court, Rogers said: “I’m glad I’ve been given another chance and I’ll give it my best shot. It’s nice to know that people do still think that I’m worthy of moving on in life.”
Rogers said he believed he could stay out of trouble provided he complied with one of his bail conditions – to stay out of Melbourne’s CBD. “I think [I can] so long as I stay out of the city,” he said. “I’m not gonna lie, it’s gonna be a task. “Look, my goal is to pay people back and do the right thing and that’s what I’m gonna do.” Rogers is only allowed to be in the city for court appearances, legal appointments and the Court Integrated Services Program. He must comply with the requirements of the program, which include not taking drugs. Other bail conditions include residing at
a Caroline Springs apartment that has been rented for him by the National Homeless Collective, reporting daily to Caroline Springs police and abiding by a 9pm-6am curfew. Rogers’ lawyer Melinda Walker argued he had a unique opportunity to turn his life around due to money that had been raised for him. A crowdfunding campaign “Not all heroes wear capes” raised $145,000 for Rogers before being closed to donations on Saturday. Rogers is due to reappear in court on November 27. – The Age
Grant wins for Burnside Burnside community groups have been given a boost from Modeina Community Fund. Eleven not-for-profit local organisations received grants of $500 or $1000 at a fund presentation last week held at the estate on Lexington Drive, Burnside. Dennis Family Corporation founder Bert Dennis presented cheques totalling $12,500. “These organisations are essential components of building a community,” he said. “We see the importance of providing funds in the early stages to enable community groups to grow and develop social harmony.” The Modeina Community Fund grants were available to not-for-profit groups operating in Melton for more than 12 months. Utsav Malayalee Samaj, a group that represents the Keralite community, was one of the recipients. Group president Siniya Joseph said the grant
would be used to promote the group’s “Donate life … The Greatest Gift” project. “The grant from Dennis Family Corporation will help us pay for posters, banners and events to promote the organ donation cause,” she said. The group has joined with DonateLife Victoria to raise awareness of organ donation and the importance of signing up to the Australian Organ Donation Register. In the 16 years that the Dennis Family Corporation has been operating community funds, more than $600,000 has been distributed to community organisations. Samoa rolls them over Samoa was too strong for Bacchus Marsh in a trans-Pacific battle of lawn bowls earlier this month. The biennial friendship tournament between the Avenue Bowling Club and Faleata village in Samoa started in 2012 – playing for bragging rights and a traditional wooden kava bowl. The November 11 tournament involved eight members from the Pacific team, including one “honorary Samoan” from Bacchus Marsh, taking on a team of 10 local players. Avenue Bowling Club secretary Stephen Sullivan said the competition was always tight between the friendly rivals. “Over 10 ends, Samoa led 36 to 29 and in
the second 10 ends Avenue led 37 to 31 which meant that the Faleata Bowling Club won the friendship trophy by 67 to 66 shots overall,” Mr Sullivan said. “The trophy, a kava bowl, shall remain at Avenue Bowling Club with the addition of an engraving of the result, as with the two previous results which had seen Avenue victorious at the Faleata Bowling Club Samoa.” The Samoan team donned the Central Wendouree shirts which were donated by the Avenue Club, along with bowls and bowling equipment, on its first visit to the islands. Melton motorists can rejoice as the opening of the Hume Drive expansion doubles the available lanes on the busy road. Work has finished on the $4.46 million project, which expanded the road from two-lanes to a four-lanes, between Calder Park Drive, Taylors Hill, and Copperfield Drive, Delahey. Melton mayor Bob Turner, said the duplication of the busy stretch of road would significantly ease traffic congestion and improve safety in the area. In addition to the lane duplication the project included new traffic lights at the intersection of Hume Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard as well as upgrades to existing roundabouts,
pedestrian and cycle infrastructure and landscaping. “These works will improve traffic flow for motorists, especially during morning and evening peak hours,” Cr Turner said. Melton and Brimbank councils jointly funded the improvements as Hume Drive falls within both municipalities, with the municipal boundary at Overton Lea Boulevard. Melton council contributed about $3.54 million. Council is now working with VicRoads and electricity providers to finalise public lighting and traffic signal upgrades, with everything set to be complete in late December.

The annual event at Melton Recreation Reserve on Saturday, December 1, will be filled with festive entertainment for the whole family. Starting at 6.30pm, the event will feature community entertainers including talented primary school pupils, choirs and musicians. Flame-free candles will light up the park from 7.30pm. Feature artists such as Lucca Franco, Al Wilkinson and Lheon will encourage audience members to embrace the Christmas spirit. For kids, there’ll be face-painting, a jumping castle, entertainment by The Mik Maks and Santa’s craft village.
Tasty treats will be served up by a line-up of food vans and Melton Valley Rotary Club members will man a sausage sizzle. Melton deputy mayor Lara Carli said Carols by Candlelight was always delightful. “It’s an event not to be missed,” she said. “This is a wonderful annual event that celebrates the importance of family, friends and the magic of Christmas. “I invite everyone to bring their best singing voices and enjoy performances that will lift spirits and create a sense of excitement for the coming holidays.” Joanna Catalano

Earlier this month I placed third at the 360 Sprintcar Allstars Series at Moama [Heartland Raceway]. It was a special moment for me to get a podium placing next to my mentor Matthew Reed. Matthew’s been such an influence on me throughout my career, so to finish on the podium with him was one of my new career highlights, and I can’t thank him, along with all of my family and sponsors, enough for all of their ongoing support.

What do you love most about the sport? Going fast and learning from my mentors.
What’s your connection to the west? I live in Melton, went to school in Caroline Springs. How long have you lived in the area? All my life.
What are you passionate about? Sprint car racing. How long have you been sprint car racing and how did you start? I started racing junior quarter midgets (cars)
when I was five then I started sprint car racing when I was 16. My dad used to race so that’s how I got into it. I’m in my fourth season [in sprint car] now. I’ve been nicknamed the “leadfoot kid”. My first big win was the Victorian 360 Sprintcar

Temporary road closure
How far do you want to go with your racing? All the way. I want to do it full-time and race in America. But I know there’s a lot of work to do to get there. It’s going to be important for us to improve our consistency … to qualify better in order to regularly crack the top-10 finishes in feature races. Our team endured an up-and-down run last season despite showing good speed at various race meetings, but we’re confident in our ability to enjoy a strong 2018-19 season, continuing to learn more as we attempt to move further up the field on a regular basis.

HARVEY NORMAN BEDDING WATERGARDENS SPECIAL LIFTOUT
ZARA BUNK
Three stars of Christmas …..from Harvey Norman Bedding Watergardens
Avelyn Miranda’s bedding store is chock full of wonderful items, big and bold to small and perfect, to make any bedroom a retreat. And getting your home ready for Christmas is the best excuse to buy a new bedroom item to bring pleasure, impress visitors or freshen up a look, writes Carole Levy.
18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 27, 2018
Meet your bedroom stylist Avelyn Miranda A Owner of Harvey Norman Bedding Watergardens What’s on your bedside table? A lamp, photo of my daughter, Ava, phone charger and reading glasses. What time is your alarm set for?
GATSBY CHANDELIER
At 5.45am – when I get up to feed Ava and then leave for work at 7.30am for a 9am start. What’s your favourite bedroom furnishing colour? I like blues. My bedroom has white wall paint, with blue and silver accents. It’s in the Scandi style. If money was no object, what dream item would you have in your fantasy bedroom? A huge round bed, preferably with beach views, and a chandelier – the more bling the better. How important is the thread count for bed linen? Hotel-quality 1000-thread sheets feel wonderful, but that’s really the only advantage. Lower thread counts are often preferred because the fabric is cooler and allows more air to flow through. Is there a particular colour palette emerging in the bedroom scene? Yes, we’re seeing lots of blush, an old-world pink. Rose gold is also popular for bedside tables and lamps. It’s a very romantic look.
MOTHER NATURE
ZARA BUNK
Of course, beyond these three stars, the store has numerous support acts.
For kids, bedrooms are more about play and create between sleep times. That’s why the Zara bunk bed earns a Christmas star. It may be a bit big to wrap up under the tree, but imagine your child’s face waking up in this on Christmas morning.
Beds come in all different styles, shapes and colours and to suit all budgets. There’s a large range of beds, pillows and bed linen. Modules set up as rooms give customers a chance to visualise items in their own homes and see how the experts put things together.
Your child will love playing in their pine “house”, enjoying role-play games with siblings and friends – and stairs are built in to add to the fun.
The Gatsby chandelier is one of the more blingy lightfittings on offer, but there are plenty more to suit all home decors – from mid-century retro to streamlined and contemporary.
GATSBY CHANDELIER
Wall art ranges through romantic and traditional to bold and contemporary, while different sizes and framing options refine the choice. A piece of art is such a personal statement, but Avelyn stocks something for all tastes.
The second Christmas star goes to the Gatsby chandelier. Dripping with Swarovski spectra and Egyptian asfour sparkling on a bouquet of chrome, the Gatsby will obviously fit an opulent bedroom. But it can be a star in other bedroom styles, as well. The French provincial style can accept this level of glam, but the Gatsby chandelier can also be a knockout statement in a pared-back bedroom with old wooden floors, a banged-up chest and heritage bed linens MOTHER NATURE CANVAS And the third star? Wall art, in this case the Mother Nature canvas. This will bring a soothing vibe to a bedroom – and a reminder of nature’s beauty never goes astray. Mother Nature will be a statement piece, not least because of its size (160 x 120 centimetres). It also picks up the blush shades that Avelyn says are an emerging colour trend in bedrooms.

The National Broadband Network (nbn) is a high speed broadband network designed to reach 100 per cent of Australian premises and provide the communications infrastructure to help us stop falling behind in an increasingly online world. nbn is committed to delivering leading edge broadband services to all Australians by leveraging the three types of technology available – fixed line, fixed wireless and satellite, depending on location. As part of the fixed radio (wireless) component of the Network, nbn is proposing to expand the existing radio network base station at the following site to provide high quality wireless broadband services to customers in the surrounding locality. 1. 43-67 Ferris Road, Melton South VIC 3338 (Lot 1 on PS438336) (NBN Ref: R01-3BRZ-3MLT-5103 – Melton) The proposed works on site will involve the upgrade of existing technology upon the facilities including and not limited to the replacement and installation of new antennas, radiocommunications dishes and associated ancillary equipment to enhance transmitting technology. Furthermore, the works will involve the replacement and addition of equipment shelters adjacent to the facilities. nbn regards the proposed installations to be Low Impact Facilities under the Telecommunications (Low-Impact Facilities) Determination 2018. In the circumstances, these works do not require planning approval from Melton City Council. Further information on this specific proposal can be obtained by calling Charlotte Phillips on (03) 9975 3054. Written submissions can be sent to Locked Bag 331, Brisbane, QLD 4001 or via email to charlotte.phillips@aurecongroup.com The closing date for submissions is COB Tuesday 11 December 2018. For general info on the nbn, email info@nbn.com.au, or visit our website at www.nbnco.com.au.

SPORT Melton no match for Moonee Valley Melton got a clear indication of the gap between itself and ladder leader Moonee Valley in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Having dropped three successive matches, Melton always had a tough task against runaway leaders Moonee Valley. That proved to be the case as Moonee Valley won 87 (16)-67 (2) to maintain its lead at the top of the table. Melton skip Conrad Dawson said while they never expected to win the match, to get two points against them was a bonus. “I’m very surprised they [Moonee Valley] didn’t get into premier league,” Dawson said. “They got three rinks on us and for us to get one rink on them and get two points is good. “We did really well and weren’t embarrassed. “We had a chat after the game and said that is where we want to be.” Ray Gnjidic was the winning skip for Melton.
The loss leaves Melton further outside the top four in sixth spot, but Dawson said they were not concerned despite losing their past four games. Dawson said they had played some hard teams in recent weeks and this was the first time they had been badly beaten. “We’re under no illusions that we’re going to go out there and win the league,” he said. “The main aim is to stay in division 1 and possibly make the top four.” Dawson said they hoped to pick up a few more wins to keep the pressure on the top sides. He said with several new players it had taken some time for the side to gel. It was a tough day for Melton as all four of its sides lost. In the Central Highlands Bowls top division, Gisborne Red inflicted Bacchus Marsh’s first loss of the season.
In the closest match of the round, Red defeated Bacchus Marsh, 102 (14)-92 (4). Don Louttit and Simon Cornock were the winning skips for Bacchus Marsh. The win kept Red in fourth spot, while Bacchus Marsh remains on top. Third-placed Kyneton, second-placed Kyneton Golf and Lancefield were the other winners on Saturday. Bacchus Marsh, Macedon Ranges, Woodend and Kyneton Blue were the winners in division 2, while Gisborne, Trentham, Woodend and Lancefield were the winners in division 3. Tara Murray

Lions take pride in win By Tara Murray An undermanned Bacchus Marsh came away with a crucial win against Portland Coasters in the Country Basketball League south west competition. Co-coach Jeff Feben said they thought Portland would be a danger game but the Lions hit the lead early in the last quarter and were able to stay there, winning 88-81. With just eight players making the trip and missing their centres, the Lions were far from full strength. Feben said with that in mind, just staying in the game was the focus. “It’s been hard to get a read on Portland,” he said. “We only played with eight players and they have a decent big man. “We were a bit worried about it. We didn’t have our big boys and Max [Beaumont]. It was good to get that win.” Feben said despite a slow start, they only trailed by four points at quarter-time. The two teams traded the lead throughout the next two quarters as neither team could gain the ascendency. The Lions chances were harmed when they lost Daniel Jackson to a shoulder injury in the third quarter. That was compounded with several players in foul trouble. Feben said they didn’t help themselves. “We gave away too many fouls,” he said. “We put them in the bonus far too early in every quarter.” Diquan Williams and Tyler Collins both fouled out, leaving the Lions with only five players. Jordan Kirk became the third Lions player fouled off late in the final quarter, but after the win was sealed. Feben said it was Kirk and Billy Feben who stepped up in the last quarter when they needed to. “They got some good points and got us in front and we were able to hold that lead,” he said. “They stand up every week. You know in a crisis they are pretty cool and can get baskets to get us in a competitive spot. They know each other so well.” Billy Feben finished with 27 points and he now averages 23 points a game for the season. Kirk scored 23 points and averages nearly 20 points a game. The Lions have a bye this week. They have played more matches than most of the teams in the competition. They then have two games before the Christmas break, then two more games before finals. 32 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 27, 2018
Rams examine female future Rockbank could field female football teams for the first time next year. Responding to interest within the club, the Rams have decided to seek expressions of interest from the wider community. Rams football operations manager Gavin Sporle said female teams were the next step for the club. “We’ve had a few people ask about it around the club, so we thought we would see the interest from outside the club,” he said. Sporle said any teams the club may field would likely play in AFL Goldfields competitions. As well as looking at players, the club was looking for coaches or anyone else who wanted to be involved. The Rams have seven girls in their under-11 team, which plays in the boys competition. Anyone interested in playing can contact Gavin on 0450 947 109 or register interest at rockbankfsc.com.au. The Lions currently sit in the top four and the top five teams have opened up a gap on the rest of the pack. Jeff Feben said they were happy with how things had panned out so far in their first season.
“Hopefully we can continue what we’ve been doing and play finals,” he said. “The first goal was to ensure that we were competitive and aim for finals. “We are on target for that and if we can achieve that goal, we will then look to reassess.”
The weather gods were the winners in the Victorian Turf and Victorian Sub-District Cricket associations at the weekend. With wet weather throughout the week and more predicted for Saturday, both competitions called off the weekend games on Friday afternoon. Subbies games, including Melton’s against Ormond, will revert to one-day games this weekend. Cancelled VTCA games were bad news for Melton South Royals and Melton Centrals in Russell Pollock Shield division 5. Both were in winning positions in matches against Gellibrand and Barkly Street Uniting, but had to settle for draws. There were similar outcomes for Caroline Springs against St Andrews in Charles Clark Shield division 4 and Sydenham-Hillside against Williamstown Congs. Tara Murray

North Western Titans love the challenge North Western Titans continue to improve in Baseball Victoria’s Summer League Women’s division 3. In their first season, the goal for the Titans has always been to get out on the field and have some fun while learning. While they are yet to get their first win, coach Jeff Ostler said they were improving every week. “We’ve got new players showing up every week,” he said. “We’re up to 13 players, which is good, as not everyone can play every week. “They’re continually learning and scoring more runs each week. They’re having a ball.” Ostler said the side’s batting and glove work was coming on well, but at times it was struggling to defend and was yet to attain the pitching depth required. Despite that, he said everything was going to plan as the players continue to learn the game. On Saturday, the Titans lost to Berwick City Cougars 18-10. Ostler said Kim Borg, in her first game for the Titans, was the game’s standout and was
able to help dry up the Cougar runs when she came on to pitch. Having previously played baseball with Bacchus Marsh and Werribee, she will add knowledge to the side. Ostler said Karina Colquhoun had been the standout in the season so far. She makes the trip down from Maryborough every week to play. The coach said they would love to get a win before the season is out to help foster the side’s confidence even more. He said they weren’t that far off the Cougars and believe that they could beat them. The Titans are on the bottom of the ladder, two games behind the Cougars. “Everyone is getting down to trying and girls are coming down to try it out,” Ostler said. “We’re trying to grow the sport, so the more the merrier.” On Sunday, the men’s side had a dark day against Ormond Glenhuntly Blue in division 3. In their worst scoreline of the season, the Titans lost 36-0 against the second-placed side. The Titans are sitting in fifth place with two
wins. Ostler, who is also the club president, said things were going really well off field, with a good vibe around the club as it continued to grow. This week the women’s side will face Werribee/Footscray and the men’s team will plays St Kilda Saints. Tara Murray

Draft dreams come true By Lance Jenkinson It was double delight for Darley at the 2018 AFL National Draft. Two former Devils have realised their dreams of becoming professional footballers after hearing their names called out at last week’s draft meeting. Mature aged recruit Brett Bewley and talented teenager Zak Butters have taken different routes to the AFL, but what they have in common is both got their starts at Darley. The pair will move to interstate clubs after Butters was selected by Port Adelaide with pick 12 and Bewley was taken by Fremantle with pick 59. Andrew Collins, the three-time Hawthorn premiership player and coach of Bewley’s VFL team Williamstown, paid tribute to Darley and the community for producing not only outstanding players, but great people. “I think they’ve got a really good junior program and a really strong footy program in that community,” Collins said. “It’s a great little town and I know Brett is really proud of where he comes from.” Torin Baker, outgoing coach of Butters’ TAC Cup side Western Jets, concurred. “It’s great for Darley,” Baker said. “It’s a strong footy town and a well-run footy club, so they should be rapt to have two players drafted from the one club.” Bewley got his reward for years of persistence. At 23 years old and five years removed from the TAC Cup, a lesser-willed player could have thrown in the towel, but he remained determined to make it to the top level. “He’s been incredibly resilient,” Collins said. “A lot of kids [out of the TAC Cup] are immature physically and Brett just needed to develop into a young man and he has and now he’s got his chance.” Bewley should immediately catch the eye at training with his elite ball use. His ability to cover the ground will also be valuable for his new club. At Williamstown last season he averaged 25 disposals, five inside 50s and three rebounds 50s, so he is hard to pin down. “Physically, he’s one of the best athletes now probably in any level of footy,” Collins said. “He’s a very confident young man and I expect him to play some great AFL footy next year.” Butters was taken high up in the draft despite missing the second half of the season with a shoulder injury. The 18-year-old with speed to burn and elusiveness like no other in this year’s draft showed enough in the early rounds with the Jets and Vic Metro in the under-18 national championships to convince the Power to take him.
Brett Bewley has taken the long road from Darley to the AFL. (Damjan Janevski)
Baker said the move to the Power would be a great fit for Butters. “He goes to a club where they’ve had a couple of players leaving like Chad Wingard and Jake Neade, so they’re looking for a player of his [Butters] type to play that role [across half-forward],” Baker said.
“It’s a good fit for Zak and he was really excited.” Two other Jets players were taken in the draft. Jets’ captain Xavier O’Halloran landed at the GWS Giants at pick 22, while Buku Khamis was a pre-selected academy player and went to the Western Bulldogs.
Panther coach embraces a youth focus New Melton South A-grade coach Anna Edmonds will continue to bring through young players at the Ballarat Netball League club. Edmonds, who played for the Panthers’ A-grade side in 2014, was announced as coach last week. She takes over from Alan Watson, who left the club after one season. Edmonds said she had been looking to return to netball after stepping back from her involvement in the past couple of years. She said she was really looking forward to the challenge in a positive environment. “I stepped away from netball as I went back to study,” she said. “Netball took up a lot of my life and I didn’t have the time. “With study coming to an end … netball was something I missed. I wanted to get back into senior netball. “My daughter played A-grade netball [at Melton South] this year and mentioned to me the previous coach was moving on and I said I might be interested.” As well as playing at the Panthers, Edmonds has coached representative sides in both juniors and seniors in Parkville competitions and travelled overseas to coach the Pacific All Stars in an international schoolgirls tournament. Edmonds said one of her main focuses would be bringing through the club’s young girls. She said it was an exciting time for the club, which won its first ever senior netball title last season. The Panthers E-grade side claimed that title this year. “Some of the young girls who were at the club when I was playing are now playing seniors,” Edmonds said. “They are the next generation.” Edmonds said she had several players interested in coming across and joining the club, but that no one would be guaranteed spots. She said she did expect to lose some players who had come to the club with Watson and would likely follow him to his new club. The Panthers held their first try-out on Saturday, with the second to be held this Saturday from 10am-1pm. Tara Murray 33 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 27, 2018

Honda hits the mark with CR-V By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Julie and I were both overdue for a long, relaxing holiday and the offer of a press test of the new fifth generation Honda CR-V arrived at just the right time. It would be hard to pick a better vehicle for reasons that will become evident later in our review. We took the Honda from our Gold Coast home to far western Queensland by way of the Warrego and Landsborough highways through Roma, Charleville and Barcaldine to Longreach. We spent several days on Longreach, touring the Qantas Founders Museum, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre. Not to mention just sitting around, reading or not doing much at all in the wide open spaces. Then back home on the Capricorn and Burnett highways through Emerald and Kingaroy till we joined the boring M1 Motorway and on down to home. We stayed in a farm, a guest house, cabins in camping areas and even a small mining camp. All good fun! Though off-road driving wasn’t part of the plan the fact that the gen-five Honda CR-V has a ground clearance of 208 mm (almost reaching the unofficial 210 mm that’s accepted beneath a true 4WD) meant that we could traverse dirt road with ease as centre humps, fire trails and the like. Two or all-wheel-drive systems are offered, ours was the 2WD, we would have preferred the AWD, but beggars can’t be choosers. Powertrain Power comes from a high-tech 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine. It has 140kW of power and 240Nm of torque all the way from 2000 to 5000 revs.
AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE 2.0 Vi 2WD: $28,290 (automatic) 1.5 VTi 2WD: $30,690 (automatic) 1.5 VTi-S 2WD: $33,290 (automatic) 1.5 VTi-L 2WD: $38,990 (automatic) 1.5 VTi-S AWD: $35,490 (automatic) 1.5 VTi-LX AWD: $44,290 (automatic) Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Honda’s new CR-V is stylish without being over the top. (Supplied)
The CR-V’s engine sits beside a CVT automatic that keeps the revs at exactly the right place all the time. Driving We lowered the beautifully engineered Honda backseats to give us a perfectly flat platform stretching all the way from the tailgate to the front seats. Just behind the front seat backs we placed a bed for boisterous Bailey, our standard French poodle. Behind him was plenty of space for all of our luggage, including handle areas in the rear corners for items we didn’t want to
move around. Driving on smooth roads the Honda was quiet and unflustered, indeed there was near silence from the tyres on motorways. Some coarse-chip surfaces – and there are plenty of them in the outback – added significant noise, but not to an uncomfortable level. Comfort is good and the seats support well even over ultra long distances. Steering is light and responsive, but obviously I didn’t try any hard cornering as neither my wife nor our dog would have appreciated it. The cruise control is easy to set up and adjust
on the move. For some reason every time I go into the dry areas of the Australian bush it rains. This trip was no different and when we were on the Warrego Highway there were times the Honda’s wipers were flat out and we had to slow to 80km/h. Once west of the Dividing Range the speed limit is 110km/h so the engine was sitting at 2100rpm virtually all the time. The CR-V’s engine is smooth and responsive with a minimum of turbo lag. The transmission is always in the correct ratio – which is hardly a surprise given that it has an infinite number of ‘gears’ between the lowest and highest ratios in the automatic. So good is the powertrain that we averaged a mere 6.6 litres per hundred kilometres for the entire trip of just over 2500 kilometres. Summing up It would be hard to pick a better vehicle for our extended holiday trip than the Honda CR-V. The flat load space is arguably better than anything in its class and comfort is very impressive.

It’s all systems Go for Hyundai By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
engine, putting out 122 kW of power and 205 Nm of torque, is available in Tucson Go and Active X mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The 2.0 GDi engine is also available in Tucson Elite teamed with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
To coin a phrase, it’s all systems ‘Go’ with the MY19 Hyundai Tucson adding a new eponymous entry-level variant to the company’s most popular sports utility vehicle range. Not to be outdone by the Tucson Go, the other models – ActiveX, Elite and Highlander – have also come in for a mid-cycle makeover, which includes updated interior and exterior styling with new wheel designs, and tablet-style multimedia with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the range. And, as is the case with most Hyundai models, the Tucson ride and handling have also had the benefit of the ‘magic touch’ from Australian suspension and steering engineers. On test was the new entry-level Tucson, a Go 2.0 GDi 2WD six-speed automatic, priced at $30,650, plus on-road costs, with SmartSense pack ($2200). Styling Not much to see here: The hallmark Hyundai cascading grille has been redesigned, together with headlamps and daytime running lights. In profile, meaty wheel arches tie this frontal treatment in with a pleasing new rear, featuring sharper tailgate lines and refined new taillight layout. Tucson Go features 17-inch steel wheels with five-spoke wheel covers and a matching full-size spare wheel.
Minor changes to looks take the popular Tucson SUV into the new year. (Supplied)
Sitting on top of a redesigned upper dashboard, incorporating quality materials, it brings a new classy touch to the cabin. Infotainment Tucson Go features a 7-inch colour LCD touchscreen that allows a wide viewing angle. It offers Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and AUX and USB inputs with iPod compatibility. Absent in the Go is an inbuilt satellite navigation facility. This is in the realm of the

Engines / transmissions The 2.0-litre gasoline direct injection (GDi)
Driving Input by Hyundai’s Australian chassis, suspension and steering engineers has made for an easy-going character to the MY19 Tucson, even on some of the worst road surfaces around. The 2.0-litre engine of the Go is well matched with the six-speed automatic transmission, while performance and fuel economy are adjustable through a drive select system. Eco mode really is ‘granny’ gearing with the Tucson a trifle tardy off the mark. Up to speed, it’s passable for town work, with a non-too-economical fuel consumption claim of 10.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Summary The addition of the Go entry-level variant to the Tucson range can only add a further advantage to a class-leading SUV. The SmartSense safety

Interior Inside, Tucson Go features a new floating tablet-style multimedia system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, bringing it in line with the whole Hyundai SUV range.
Safety The introduction of a SmartSense safety option pack on the entry-level Go and Active X models makes advanced safety accessible on every Tucson grade. The SmartSense pack, available in automatic models for $2200, brings forward collision avoidance assist, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, lane keeping assist and driver attention warning systems among the safety and convenience features.
