Four-time mayor charged By Tom Cowie/The Age Former Melton councillor and four-time mayor Justin Mammarella allegedly planned a cover-up with three other Labor Party staffers to conceal the use of electorate office resources for a successful pre-selection campaign. Mammarella, the former Labor candidate who quit a month before November’s state election, his father, Umberto Mammarella, Angela Scarpaci and Jeffrey O’Donnell appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Wednesday. They were charged by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption

Commission last year. Mammarella, 42, was preselected by Labor to contest the safe seat of Melton in the state election, but stood aside in October, citing family reasons. Charge sheets show the group allegedly attempted to pervert the course of justice by agreeing to tell IBAC they had not used paid work hours, stationery and office equipment at the Cairnlea electorate office to aid Mammarella’s pre-selection bid. The four people are also alleged to have given false information that 713 stamped envelopes addressed to members of Labor’s Melton branch seized by investigators were intended

for a mail-out to raise autism awareness for service provider Autism Plus. Magistrate Duncan Reynolds heard that the prosecution would need extra time to compile the brief of evidence in order for material from listening devices to be transcribed. Some members of the group are also alleged to have shared confidential information about their appearance before an IBAC examination and the evidence they intended to give. The charges were handed down in December after an IBAC investigation into the alleged misuse of retired MP Khalil Eideh’s taxpayer-funded printing budget to pay for

Labor Party memberships. Mr Eideh, the former Western Metropolitan MP, retired from politics at the November election after holding a seat for 12 years. In September 2017, Mr Eideh’s office in Cairnlea closed and his staff placed on leave as news broke that IBAC would be asked to investigate the alleged rort. Mr Eideh stood down as deputy president of the upper house not long after the allegations emerged. The matter will return to court for a committal mention on April 3. – with Benjamin Preiss

Melton loses emergency relief By Esther Lauaki Struggling Melton residents could be forced to travel out of the municipality to seek emergency relief after the council’s welfare providers missed out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funding. Melton council was advised last week by the Social Services Department that the funding, about $235,000 a year, would be distributed in other parts of the western suburbs because the council missed the application deadline. As a result, local financial support providers

may not be able to offer the same services this year. The current grant ran out on December 31. Council’s community services general manager Maurie Heaney said that due to an administration error the application to renew the funding was submitted past deadline. “Through the emergency relief grants, Melton council has provided approximately $235,000 per annum in financial support to individuals and families through food vouchers, petrol vouchers, utility relief in times of crisis … for over 25 years,” Mr Heaney said.

“Council understands that a small number of community service organisations have been awarded the funding and will be responsible for the ongoing delivery of this program. “We are currently liaising with the Department of Social Services and look forward to working with the organisations that were successfully funded to transition clients in need to continue to access this service.” Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor wrote to Federal Families and Social Services Minister Paul Fletcher appealing for transitional funding for Melton.

“I understand this funding will now be distributed to other local service providers in Melbourne’s western suburbs, however these providers have not been informed they will now be providing emergency relief in the Melton area that Melton council previously serviced,” Mr O’Connor wrote. “With service providers unsure which region they now cover from January 1, Melton council is in need of transitional funding to ensure the people of Melton are not left without essential needs.” The ministry was contacted for comment.

Big kicks for karate kid Caleb Melton’s Caleb is busting down any barriers that he faces. The 12-year-old karate kid recently completed his second grading from his wheelchair to earn a yellow belt. Caleb, who has arthritis, haemophilia, ADHD and autism, took up Shindo karate a year ago to improve his fitness and join his sister. Mum Sarah Russell said that her determined son would give most things a go.

“He spends time in and out of a wheelchair,” Ms Russell said. “He saw the other kids doing it [karate] and wanted to give it a go. “Shindo karate have been fantastic with my son and accommodating his needs … they welcomed him and didn’t look at his disabilities but his abilities. “Just because you have a disability, it doesn’t mean you can’t live a normal life.” Ms Russell said Caleb looked forward to

training each week at Karate Melton and had developed a tight bond with his teachers. “Through the sport, my son’s made so many friends and has learned not to let his disability define him,” Ms Russell said. “There’s nothing that you can’t achieve.” Caleb will undergo surgery on his ankle in coming months and hopes to return to karate to work towards more belts. A free two-dose hepatitis A vaccination program has been extended to help control the disease in Victoria. The vaccination program, run by the Department of Health and Human Services for the past year, will continue to be offered until June 30. Those eligible for vaccinations under the program include men who have sex with men, people who have injected drugs in the past 12 months, homeless rough sleepers and adult prisoners. Victoria’s acting chief health officer, Brett Sutton, said there had been 211 confirmed cases linked to an outbreak of hepatitis A in Victoria and two deaths. Hepatitis A is usually spread through touching objects or consuming food or water that has been contaminated by an infected person. Transmission can also occur through sharing injecting equipment or person-to-person contact. It can take between 15 to 50 days to develop symptoms after a susceptible person comes into contact with hepatitis A. Symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, followed by dark urine and yellow skin or eyes. “People can be infectious and transmit the infection to others for up to two weeks before they become unwell,” Dr Sutton said. “This means it is especially important to get vaccinated if you are at risk and are a food handler, healthcare worker or childcare worker … you might transmit infection to vulnerable people before you realise you are ill.” Details: betterhealth.vic.gov.au/ timetoimmunise Esther Lauaki

Very special light display Brett Greenland spent nearly 300 hours programming the Christmas lights spectacular at his Kurunjang home. His labour of love attracted more than 1500 people on Christmas eve to enjoy the 15-minute lights display set to classic carols as well as the children’s jingle Baby Shark. The Greenlands transform their Melrome Court house with 15,000 lights each year to raise money for charity. The cause hit closer to home after their son Jonah, a twin, died shortly after birth in October. The family raised $1500 for Very Special Kids, the charity that has helped them during their grief. Mr Greenland said the display would now be an annual tribute to their son.

“My son Jonah passed away at just … hours old to a very rare condition,” he said. “We … were faced with many milestones to keep both boys alive during the 34-week road to delivery. “Caleb and Jonah successfully entered the world against all the medical odds but not without complications. “Very Special Kids has continued to support my family during this extremely hard journey and do so weekly, so now we want to help raise awareness and support the organisation. “Our mission for our lights display has become quite personal by honouring and remembering Jonah.” Esther Lauaki

The Scotsburn Appeal Committee has split the final balance of its fundraising account between the management committees of Scotsburn Hall and Clarendon Recreation Reserve hub. About $3800, made up of donations following the 2015 Scotsburn fires, has been allocated. Both facilities were key locations for community recovery events during and after the fires.

More than he can bear By Esther Lauaki The adventures of Nathan and Honey Bear have taken the duo around the world – but Honey recently went missing. Five-year-old Nathan, of Kurunjang, was given Honey Bear when he was two and mum Helen Graham said they were inseparable from the start. Until, while on a recent Christmas shopping trip to Werribee Plaza, Honey was lost.

“Anyone who knows Nathan knows that he just adores the bear,” Ms Graham said. “Everywhere we go, the bear is always clutched under his arm. “We’ve been on a number of holidays and bear even gets his own boarding pass.” Ms Graham put a call out to residents on Facebook earlier this month appealing for information about Honey Bear’s whereabouts. “We’re out and about all the time and we are

normally so careful not to misplace Honey,” Ms Graham said. “He’s been to Europe with us, three cruises, interstate to Queensland, Hamilton Island … and we’ve never lost him. “I would love for Nathan to know when he grows up the lengths we went to try and find his bear.” She said although Nathan, who has special needs, has other bears the bond is not the same. Nearly 200 new Melton and Moorabool citizens will be sworn in at Australia Day celebrations this month. In Melton there will be 180 new citizens, while Moorabool will welcome 11. This year’s citizenship festivities will mark 70 years since Australian citizenship was introduced into law. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the day was a significant time to reflect on the privilege of citizenship and what it means to be Australian. “Australia Day is a time for us to give a warm welcome to our newest citizens and acknowledge the importance of what it means to become a full member of the Australian community,” Cr Tatchell said. “I congratulate those becoming Australian citizens on making their commitment to Australia and encourage everyone to come and join in on the local celebrations this Australia Day.” Melton Australia Day festivities at Willows Historical Park will include live entertainment, a welcome to country, an address from Australia Day ambassador Wida Tausif and a flag-raising ceremony. Crime drop not enough for cops By Esther Lauaki Melton’s crime rate continues to fall as police hone in on thefts across the region – but there is still work to be done. Offences in Melton fell by 362 from 21,996, a drop of 2.9 per cent, according to data recently released by the Crime Statistics Agency. The main drivers behind the tumbling crime rates were significant drops in property and deception offences (6372 to 6045) and justice procedures offences (1780 to 1746). Burglary and break and enter offences decreased from

1145 to 1068, theft from 3873 to 3564 and arson from 93 to 85 . North West Metro region Inspector Kathy Rudkins said targeted operations to address high-volume crime had led to significant reductions in burglaries and thefts. “We’ve targeted fairly heavily our theft of petrol and petrol drive-offs which is something that we work constantly on,” Inspector Rudkins said. “There have been a number of arrests regularly in recent months and that has been the main driver for a reduction in thefts.”

Contrary to the overall fall in crime, drug offences have risen by five per cent to 477, driven mainly by a spike in dealing and trafficking from 61 to 90. Sexual offences were up to 287 from 260 while assaults climbed from 929 to 959. Inspector Rudkins said that despite crimes against the person offences increasing slightly (0.4 per cent), it remained an area of concern. “The area that most concerns me is crimes against the person because of the harm that they cause and that people have to live with … particularly victims of assaults or personal

crimes,” she said. “The more we can arrest people who are committing those crimes and get them off the streets, the safer our community is going to be.” An additional four general duties police officers were allocated to the Melton Police Service Area since last year, as well as nine divisional family violence specialists. “The highly visible police presence and improved police response will be felt by people living in Caroline Springs, Melton and surrounding suburbs,” Inspector Rudkins told Star Weekly.

Officers reach out Residents are being invited to meet and mingle with Melton police members at a community day next week. The free event at the amphitheatre on High Street on Wednesday, January 23, will include food and entertainment, as well as fun for the children. A Caroline Springs community day will follow on February 16. North West Metro Region Inspector Kathy Rudkins said the events were an opportunity to get to know Victoria Police in the community. “This community day will be the first of a number of events to be held this year,” she said. “There are six months worth of activities coming up, including information sessions where people can interact with the local police all around community safety. “In 2017, we conducted community consultation and residents said that they would like more social cohesion and connection with

our members … as a result of that, we’ve come up with these workshops and activities in various sectors of the community. “There will be a number of other organisations, including Neighbourhood Watch and the Crime Statistics Agency, at the community days … whatever residents’ concerns are, we would love to hear it.” Police Community Safety Networks Project co-ordinator Jo Mutsaerts said the community days were aimed at making police members more available to residents. “It’s an opportunity for those who don’t feel comfortable coming into a police station or who just have a general questions to connect with us,” Leading Senior Constable Mutsaerts said The Melton Community Day will run from 10am to 2pm. Gordon trees reprieve

Future boost for students

By Esther Lauaki Gordon residents fearful for the future of 21 trees on the town’s Main Street have been assured their beloved streetscape is safe. A plan published in November, 2017, on the Moorabool council website showed a proposed three-stage Main Street upgrade that included red crosses on the 21 trees to be axed. The axing proposal upset a group of residents. But Moorabool chief executive Derek Madden said last week only three trees would be removed, none of them on the main street, and 22 new trees would instead be planted. The residents’ group, called We Love Gordon, tied yellow ribbons around the earmarked trees in a protest calling for construction of stage one, due to begin next month, to be deferred for further community consultation. Gordon resident Stephen Derrick said the group believed removal of the trees would “destroy the unique character of this quiet village”. Mr Derrick said that he hoped the yellow ribbon protest would highlight flaws in council’s community consultation processes. “Little, if any, updated information on the passage of the project was provided to Gordon residents and ratepayers” he said. “Council has not provided adequate information to the community.” At a community meeting earlier this month Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said that the three trees on the chopping block were in Russell Street, off Main Street. Stage one of the work is aimed at improving the landscape and safety in Main Street in the vicinity of Russell and Lyndhurst street intersections. Construction, due to start mid-February, will include drainage improvements, new rubbish bins, improved

carparking, relocated bus stops, a new traffic island at Russell Street intersection and better pedestrian connectivity.

The We Love Gordon group will run a second community meeting at the Gordon Public Hall on January 22 from 7.30pm.

Melton and Moorabool students will be given valuable guidance in choosing a tertiary course or career thanks to a series of workshops. The University Pathways Program, run by not-for-profit organisation Doxa, provides struggling students with a taste of university life and the world of work. Bacchus Marsh Secondary College will run the program until tomorrow (January 16), while Kurunjang Secondary College will run the program from Thursday, January 17, to Saturday, January 19. The program is open to young people dealing with challenging life circumstances in years nine to 12. Students experiencing financial difficulty, family trauma and from indigenous or Torres Strait Islander, refugee or migrant background are being encouraged to participate. Doxa chief executive Steve Clifford said the program offered young people great opportunities. “We offer invaluable networking opportunities and develop students’ enterprise, employment and personal skills that will help them succeed in university and in the workplace,” he said. “Students will be developing their personal, professional and employment skills by visiting universities and corporate workplaces across Melbourne CBD.” Details: doxa.org.au Esther Lauaki

9 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 15, 2019

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Sandra Pelly draws inspiration from real life. The Melton artist talks to Esther Lauaki about colouring her community.

What are you passionate about? I am passionate about art, specifically painting. One can often see me around Melton with paint all over me, as I forget to clean it up. I also love working with kids with disabilities, especially autism, and giving them the outlet to create … surrounded by like-minded people who are accepting of them. Tell us about your involvement with the Artists’ Collective of Melton. I am one of the founding members of the Artists’ Collective of Melton as well as its current president. Other group members joke around that I have hamster wheels in my head, as I always come up with millions of ideas of what we should do next. However, there isn’t enough funding and manpower available to do everything. When I came to Melton, I was terribly lonely and could not find my “tribe” – people interested in community work, art, literature and creating. Since then I have opened my doors to creative people of Melton … to come over, talk, create and share skills. What inspires you most in your work? When I paint, I do not have a theme that holds me permanently. I keep shifting and changing and then returning back to old themes with new knowledge. January is Strada Easel Challenge month, so I am organising a “plein air” or life study painting day. I always try to learn new skills that I can apply to my interests. I swing between highly realistic work to more loose, expressionist work.

What other hats do you wear in the community? I wear many hats. Besides Artists’ Collective of Melton, I love supporting Melton Botanic Garden, as it is one of my favourite places in Melton. I love donating my time and skills to any community group and charity in need. I hold art workshops for children and adults alike, as well as donating my art to Hope Street, organising the art battle to raise funds for homeless youth, decorating community library for Melton South Community Centre. What arts initiatives are coming up in the next few months? The big project that will consume my time is Diversity Wall. Artists’ Collective of Melton will be visiting a number of local primary schools to show the beauty of fluid art to kids, teach them about the importance of diversity through art, and at the same time create a beautiful masterpiece that will be on display for Harmony Day at Melton and Caroline Springs libraries. The final work, after the exhibition, will be donated to Hope Street in Melton. We are also hoping at the same time to raise funds for emergency accommodation for Hope Street. Tell us about the upcoming plein air arts event on Friday (January 18). On January 18, we have decided to make it an invitation for artists and those interested in creating to join me at Melton Botanic Garden. There is something special about going out and creating. It is about capturing the mood and essence of the place, and there is no place better than Botanic Garden. Some of the gum trees, especially around Small Lake, are over 100 years old.

(Shawn Smits)

What’s your connection to Melton? I moved to Melton about six years ago.

19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 15, 2019

SPORT Premiership glow lingers as Centrals aim higher Melton Centrals are still letting the realisation they have claimed the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 competition sink in. Centrals, in just their second season, defeated EMP/Willy Congs in the grand final late last year to claim their first premiership. Centrals captain-coach Candace Hulett said there was still plenty of excitement around over the win. “I didn’t think we’d make finals for the first three to four years, let alone win one,” she said. “All the effort we’ve been putting in at training is really paying off. We’re over the moon as a team, as is the whole club.” Centrals claimed an easy win in the grand final after the two teams split the results during the regular season.

The Congs won the grand final toss and elected to bat, but from there the Centrals took control, restricting the Congs to 3-91.

Lauren McGrath, Erin and Tara Keenan were the wicket takers for Centrals. The Centrals’ run chase got off to a slow start thanks to the loss of an early wicket, before steadying to reach the target with nine wickets and four overs in hand. Centrals finished on 1-92, Tara Keenan top-scoring with 41 not out. Hulett, who finished on 29 not out, said the day couldn’t have gone any better. “From the first ball everything went right,” she said. “We bowled well and then we batted well. Our younger players fielded so well and were always in the game.” Tara Keenan, named best afield, is just 13 and has a bright future ahead of her. Centrals’ focus now turns to the one-day competition.

They played their third match of that competition on Sunday against EMP/Willy Congs. Centrals struggled to 8-73 from their overs, with the Congs racing to the target to finish 1-74. Centrals are 2-1 after three matches. Hulett said the T20 win had made them reassess their expectations for the one-day competition. “Probably the strongest competition in the one-day competition is EMP,” she said. “We know that we can beat them. We definitely want to make finals and, hopefully, the grand final.” St Anthonys had the bye. Tara Murray

Outlook good for Storm By Tara Murray Sydenham-Hillside is in a strong position after day one of its match against St Andrews in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Charles Clark Shield division 4. The Storm was sent in and made the most of good conditions, making 9-294 from its overs. Storm vice-president Warren Hackney said the side was happy with its total. “We got off to a good start before being shaky in the middle,” he said. “Ben Green batted really well with the lower order and made 100, which was good reward for him. “He’s batted well all season and been solid without making a score, but he was able to break through.” Hackney, who has been playing in the first XI in recent weeks, said the Storm was confident of recording its fourth victory of the season. “It’s going to be warm during the week and it’s a pretty defendable score,” he said. “We’ve got a good bowling attack, as well.” After a slow start to the season, the Storm is in the top four. Hackney said it had taken some time to adjust to a new coaching group and player additions. West Indian import Dane Currency and Peter Magafas are co-coaches this season, with Magafas captaining the first XI side. Both have had an impact since taking on the roles. “It was a sluggish start with a few new faces and it took time to gel,” Hackney said “With the new coaching group it has taken a period of adjustment. “We’ve seen some signs that it’s starting to happen, and hopefully that can continue on and we make finals. “Dane has been great and a really strong leader and his bowling has been excellent. “Peter has also brought a lot of experience to the group – and that experience is invaluable.” Hackney said things were looking good for the club, with three of its five senior sides sitting in finals positions at the halfway point of the season. The club’s women’s side, which is chasing back-to-back premierships, sits atop the VTCA women’s competition ladder. In other division 4 matches, Caroline Springs was unable to bat out the day against Grand United. The fifth-placed Falcons made 181 as they were bowled out with eight overs remaining in the day. Grand United had to face five overs before stumps, finishing 0-12. In the Russell Pollock Shield division 5 competition, Melton South Royals have already claimed first-innings points against 20 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 15, 2019

Williamstown Colts. The Royals bowled the Colts out for 35 before declaring at 5-154 in their first innings. The Colts are 2-69 in their second innings.

Melton Centrals need quick wickets on day two against Gellibrand. Centrals were bowled out for 113, with Gellibrand 3-70 at stumps.

Melton has one win in the opening week of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association JC under-15 Craig Shield. The Lions started the week off well in the west group with a win against Altona. The Lions made 87. Josh Oldfield top-scored with 22, while Alex Kerr chipped in with 20. With a small total to defend, the Lions bowlers kept it tight and bowled Altona out for 64. Joshua Francis took three. The Lions’ second match went down to the wire. They again batted first, this time making 8-102. Kerr (40) and Oldfield (24) were again standouts with the bat. Yarraville finished 4-110 to win. It was a tough day with the bat for the Lions against Williamstown in round three. The Lions could only manage 7-82 with extras (25) the highest on the scorecard. Ryan Cran was the best of the batsmen, making 17 not out. The Seagulls hit the winning runs nine wickets down and finished 9-83. Cran, Francis and Oscar Hodgetts took two wickets each for the Lions. The Lions again struggled with the bat on Sunday against Werribee and were bowled out for 68. Conrad Farrugia top-scored with 27 and just two batsmen reached double figures. Werribee easily chased the runs and went on to make 4-153. The Lions play two more matches this week. Tara Murray

Bacchus Marsh star’s dreams take flight to England

Alex Porter in action for Bacchus Marsh. (Shawn Smits)

Bacchus Marsh’s Alex Porter will tick an item off his bucket list when he heads to England to play cricket this year. The 20-year-old will play with Houghton Main Cricket Club in the South Yorkshire Cricket League after being awarded the Cricket Willow UK Scholarship. The scholarship, open to cricketers in the Central Highlands region between the ages of 19 and 28, gives the players selected opportunities to further their game overseas. Porter said he was thrilled. Among the reasons he was selected were his contributions both on and off the field at Bacchus Marsh. “I found out just before Christmas that I had been the successful applicant,” he said. “I’ve only ever played locally and I’ve always wanted to play overseas. It’s an opportunity I wasn’t going to turn down. “Any opportunity you get to play overseas is great.”

While in England, Porter is hoping to take in the ICC World Cup and Ashes. He said that was one of the major attractions of applying for the scholarship. The scholarship success comes after Porter’s break-out start to the season with Bacchus Marsh in Gisborne and District Cricket Association Premier Firsts. Before Christmas, Porter had made 315 runs, the fifth most in the competition, at an average of 45 including his first top-grade century. Porter said he was enjoying working under first year captain-coach James Lidgett. “I’m very happy working under James,” he said. “He has been fantastic for me and worked hard at my game to fine-tune some things. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to finish the season well and take some strong form over there.” As well as playing in England, Porter said he would like to get involved behind the scenes at his club.

Eagles plan a fight back By Tara Murray Eynesbury Eagles is hoping to be a more competitive team in the second half of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts. The Eagles had a tough first half to the season on the scoreboard, without a win, but there were a lot of encouraging signs from the young playing group. A number of players have recently returned to the club, which should strengthen the side for the rest of the year. Eagles captain-coach Tristan Francis said the side they fielded on Saturday against Ashfield was the strongest they have had all year. “We’ve had a few blokes come back to the club which has been good,” he said. “A few older heads, which means we won’t be playing as many young kids who have been filling the void. “Justin Siedlecki, who was one of the founding members and a club legend, played his first game back. “Scott Lynch, Ben Tung and Mark Pino have all played in the past and have returned back to the club.” Francis, who missed the past nine weeks with stress fractures, was also back on the field on Saturday for the Eagles’ second T20 match against Ashfield. Ashfield made 7-158 from its overs and Francis said they batted well. Brandon Shearson took two wickets for the Eagles, while young gun Josh Oldfield opened the bowling and bowled well. Francis said a slow start with the bat had been costly. “We lost a few early wickets and we didn’t have the momentum to get the runs,” he said. “Trent Wemyss’ batting was the highlight. Craig Norris and Scott Oldfield batted well in the middle order.” Francis said he hoped the more competitive performance on Saturday was a sign of things to come. He said they would like to break through for their first win over the next two Saturdays against East Sunbury. “I think we should be more competitive, but there’s still a long way to go. “We’re not the side of last year, but we’ve got a little bit more maturity.” While a few of the players who had been playing seniors have dropped back down the grades, Francis said they had benefited from their time in the top side. Four of those players are part of Melton’s Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association under-15 JC Craig Shield team. They are Josh Oldfield, Travis Stark, Ryan Cran and Zach Micallef. “They have benefited a lot,” Francis said. “Josh has batted and bowled really well for Melton, and Ryan has bowled really well too.

Porter is studying for a bachelor of sport management and business at Federation University in Ballarat and has taken on the secretary role at Bacchus Marsh. “I’d love to get involved over there and bring back some things likes policies and procedures to hopefully improve Bacchus Marsh,” he said. “I’ve been studying business and sport management and I thought being secretary was a good entry level role and I can give something back to the club in the process. “I spent a fair part of my summer at the club anyway and I love it. It’s really rewarding getting involved behind the scenes.” Included in the scholarship are return airfares to the UK, assistance with accommodation and employment, a full kit of Jabaroo cricket gear valued at $1000 and club membership with Houghton Main Cricket Club. Melton started the new year with a loss to Elsternwick in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west. The Lions batted first, making 8-203 on the back of 92 not out from opener Ben MacRae. Elsternwick made the runs in the second last over, finishing with 8-204. Ash Sweet was the pick of the bowlers for the Lions, taking 4-41. Despite the loss, the Lions remain in the top six.

BCA

Darley had a less than ideal start to the new year, losing to Buninyong in the Ballarat Cricket Association on Saturday. Buninyong made 226 after winning the toss, setting the Lions a tough total to chase. Ben Longhurst took three wickets for the Lions. The Lions started strongly, making 70 for the first partnership, before things got tougher. They lost wickets regularly to be bowled out for 214 with four balls remaining. Danza Hyatt top-scored for the Lions with 96 at nearly a run a ball.

Basketball

Bacchus Marsh Lions have had a rare loss in the Country Basketball League south-west competition, downed by Geelong Supercats, who are looking to move into the top four. The Lions were unable to match it with the Supercats after quarter-time, losing 83-73. Max Beaumont top-scored for the Lions with 25 points, while Jordan Kirk shot 23 points. The Lions will this week face Mt Gambier in the last round before finals.

Football

The Western Rams will hold their junior registration day this Sunday. The Rams, the junior arm of the Rockbank Football Netball Club, are looking for players in all junior age groups in both football and netball. The club has had a lot of early interest in players for the under-9 and under-11 football and under-13 and under-15 netball. Anyone who pays their registration on the day will get it at a discounted rate. Registrations will be taken between 10-11am at Ian Cowie Reserve. The club’s senior football sides will resume training on January 21.

Scott Oldfield was solid in the middle order for Eynesbury Eagles. (Shawn Smits)

“The experience they have during the year has helped with their rep cricket. It’s good to see the young guys coming through.” Other winners on Saturday in the Johnstone Shield were East Sunbury, Gisborne and Riddell.

In the McIntyre Cup, Diggers Rest Bulla and Bacchus Marsh were both on the winners’ list. Diggers Rest Bulla had no trouble beating Sunbury, while Bacchus Marsh accounted for Romsey. Both the Burras and Lions sit in the top four.

Mazda’s new lap of luxury By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring To most people ‘affordable luxury’ in a vehicle would seem as far out of reach as a winning lottery ticket. However, there are those who are fortunate enough to know the feeling of it. Enough, indeed, for Mazda to cater for these lucky folks with its luxury CX-9. Now, the importer has just landed a super-luxury version of the CX-9, the Azami LE, Down Under. What’s more, the new seven-seat ‘palace’ on wheels will set back its buyer a mere $1500 – petty cash – over the existing Azami range-topper. Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi said the new Mazda CX-9 defined a new meaning for affordable luxury. “Since its 2016 launch, Mazda CX-9 sales have always skewed to high-grade all-wheel drive variants, so we added Azami LE to give those looking for luxury even greater choice in the range.” Azami LE introduces a new and luxurious interior trim, featuring wood highlights, while Azami and Azami LE grades add the 360-degree view monitor, heated steering wheel and front seat ventilation. While on the job, Mazda also took the opportunity to make improvements across the CX-9 range with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity for all grades, ActivSense safety technologies now standard across all models. I became a pampered person for a week with an Azami LE AWD, which sells for $66,490, plus on-road costs, and made the best of every minute.

Timber decorative panels on the doors and centre console, which is framed by elegant ambient LED lighting, add a premium touch, while a more minimalist overhead console design and hand-crafted box stitching on the leather-wrapped steering wheel complete the high-end character of the vehicle.
