Art reflects core values
(Marco De Luca)
A striking and symbolic face will greet pupils at one of Truganina’s newest schools when it opens next month. Esteemed Victorian street artist Matt Adnate has put the final touches on this masterpiece in the foyer of Doherty’s Creek P-9 College ahead of its first school year. Principal Ian Wren said the mural of a young Wurundjeri girl would reflect some of the school’s core values. “It’s very exciting starting a new school and the artwork sets a tone for the kind of school that we want to be,” Mr Wren said. “I wanted to develop an inclusive new school and it’s important to acknowledge the indigenous people of this land. “Another significance of the artwork is that we wanted to place the child at the front of the school [reception] … we always want to put our children first.” Mr Wren, former principal at Bacchus Marsh Primary School, said about 225 children were enrolled to start school on February 1 and an event to welcome new pupils and their families would be held later this week. Drive to ramp up safety By Esther Lauaki Brookfield residents and Melton council have renewed calls for a full diamond interchange to be built at Bulmans Road to ease congestion in Melton West. Tim Roberts, of the Brookfield 3338 residents group, said works had been mapped out for a number of years but there has been no progress. “When we moved into Brookfield there was a proposed full diamond interchange … but nothing has happened in six and a half years since it was mapped out,” Mr Roberts said. “I’m always hearing people complaining about the traffic problems and accidents happening as people try to get onto the freeway through Coburns Road because of all the new development at Atherstone and surrounding areas.
Dylan Eccles and Tim Roberts have started a petition for a full diamond Interchange on the Bulmans and Clarkes roads overpass. (Mark Wilson)
“A large number of residents that we have spoken to had expressed the frustration with having to drive two kilometres in the wrong direction to travel westbound on the Western Freeway.
“Come school times, when your trying to get onto the freeway, traffic can be backed up for two to three hundred metres.” An online petition calling for the installation of a full diamond freeway interchange on the Western Freeway at Bulmans and Clarkes roads has attracted more than 3500 signatures in three weeks. “This would reduce the amount of traffic on Coburns Road and High Street considerably with the estates in Melton West, Harkness and Brookfield growing bigger and bigger,” Mr Roberts said. Melton council engineering services manager Sam Romaszko said an interchange at Bulmans/Clarkes roads was high on the council’s wish list. “Council considers the construction of an interchange at Bulmans Road/Clarkes Road as
a high priority, and continues to advocate to the state and federal governments for this project and broader upgrades along the Western Highway corridor,” Ms Romaszko said. “The Western Highway is the primary transport link between the municipality and the inner suburbs of Melbourne and is vital for providing our residents with access to employment and education, as well as being the main transport route between Melbourne and Adelaide. “A new interchange at Bulmans Road/Clarkes Road would provide residents of Melton West and Brookfield with more direct access to the Western Highway and help to reduce congestion at the Coburns Road interchange, as well as adjacent roads.” VicRoads has been contacted for comment. Rubbish service is on the nose By Esther Lauaki Diggers Rest residents are in support of a push for Melton council to provide a kerbside hard waste collection service – but the council has concerns about safety. Resident David O’Connor said a recent poll on a Diggers Rest residents’ Facebook page showed the community “dissatisfaction” with the current at-call service. The poll showed 208 of 320 respondents were in favour of Melton council offering a kerbside collection service.
‘‘
Other residents are in favour of the at-call - Kathy Majdlik collection
’’
“The online poll was recently initiated to seek community feedback regarding the introduction of a kerbside hard waste collection service in place of the current at-call service,” Mr O’Connor wrote in a letter to the council. “It does seem that many residents are dissatisfied with the current arrangement.
“It’s my intention to request funding to initiate community consultation with respect to the current collection process and alternative solutions, similar to those offered by other municipalities.” Cambridge ward councillor Kathy Majdlik said the matter had been brought before council and officers recommended against the move because of a number of safety issues about providing a kerbside service. “The information we received by officers was that most councils who currently have kerbside collection of hard waste were looking
at how they could change this system to the at-call collection as it was a safer and … a cleaner way of collecting hard waste,” Cr Majdlik said. “I believe that other residents are in favour of the at-call collection.” Melton council provides homeowners and tenants with several at-call hard waste disposal options including one free hard waste collection each financial year from a property or one to two free drop-off visits to the Melton Recycling Facility. You’d be barking mad to miss this Moorabool residents looking for a new furry family member need look no further. PETstock Bacchus Marsh and stores across the country will be hosting their fifth annual National Pet Adoption Day on February 9. The initiative, run by PETstock’s charity arm PETstock Assist and leading adoption site PetRescue, is this year hoping to double the number of pets adopted during 2018 to 1000. All breed labels will be removed from pets listed online in the week leading up to the day, to ensure as many loving pets of all types find the homes they deserve.
PETstock charity and events co-ordinator Jess Guilfoyle said she hopes the move will help people forget any preconceptions they have about rescue pets or breed characteristics and get to know the animals for who they are. “Every pet is unique and individual, and I encourage people considering a new pet to keep an open mind – you may just be surprised by who you fall for,” Ms Guilfoyle said. PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy said that every year about 200,000 pets remain unclaimed in Australian pounds – a statistic she was determined to change.
“I hope by encouraging people to look for an individual pet rather than a particular breed we can educate people on the incredible benefits of adopting a pet in need,” Ms Davy said. “Not all cute fluffy dogs are great with kids and overlooking a big boofy dog – who loves children and naps – may mean you miss out on the perfect family dog.” National Pet Adoption Day starts at 10am. Swim clear of germs contaminating public pools this summer, Victoria’s acting chief health officer warns. Brett Sutton said chlorine kills most germs in public pools but some germs, such as cryptosporidium, are highly resistant to chlorine at normal concentrations. Dr Sutton said outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis associated with pools occur when swimmers accidentally swallow pool water contaminated with the germ. “The germs can live in pool water for days and make people sick,” he said. “Everyone has a responsibility to keep themselves and others safe and healthy and help keep the pool clean. “Even in the best maintained pools, germs on your body can wash off and contaminate the water. “You and your children are more likely to be infectious when not feeling well.” He warned anyone with vomiting or diarrhoea to stay out of the water. “Even when you are recovering, stay out of the water until the symptoms have stopped,” he said. Healthy swimming starter kits have been provided to every child taking part in VicSwim’s 2018-19 Summer Learn to Swim program. Dr Sutton said crypto outbreaks are more common during summer, when more people are enjoying swimming pools to try and beat the heat. In 2018 there were 780 cases of crypto notified to the Department of Health and Human Services, with six outbreaks linked to pools. Details: bit.ly/2RSDa09 Esther Lauaki

Congress gives youth a voice By Esther Lauaki Plumpton’s Lily Trethowan will be part of a small contingent of young people from the west who will be adding their voice to this year’s Victorian Youth Congress. Lily is one of 19 young people from across the state, three of those from the western suburbs, inducted into the government’s second Victorian Youth Congress. Members of the advisory group, comprising young people aged between 13 and 24, will discuss issues affecting their peers and highlight areas of concern as well as shape government policies, programs and services. Youth Minister Gabrielle Williams congratulated the appointed congress members as they gathered to meet earlier this month. “I’m really excited to meet these talented and inspiring young people who are so committed to making life better for young people in Victoria,” Ms Williams said. “Youth congress members will provide advice to the government on key issues affecting young people over the next 12 months – their thoughts and opinions will create change.” She said the initiative was about engaging young people in shaping their future. “It’s about amplifying the voices of young people and ensuring their involvement in decisions that impact on them – a key commitment of the Youth Policy: Building Stronger Youth Engagement in Victoria,” Ms Williams said. The group includes members from Aboriginal, LGBTI and diverse backgrounds, as well as young people living with a disability. Ms Williams said she hoped that this year’s initiative would build on the success of last year’s inaugural congress. Details: www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au

Turbines kill wedge-tailed eagles Wedge-tailed eagles are falling foul of giant turbine blades at Yaloak South wind farm near Ballan. Renewable energy company Pacific Hydro confirmed last week that three deaths of Australia’s largest protected bird of prey have been recorded at the wind farm since it began operating in Moorabool Shire last year. The confirmation bears out claims made by Glenmore-based wildlife campaigner Kevin Ramholdt, who reported the eagle deaths on radio last week. The wind farm, which consists of 14 turbines, began operations at a site 15 kilometres south
of Ballan last June. The Yaloak South site has wind turbines that are 80 metres high and blade tips up to 126.5 metres. The tips of the turbine rotors can reach speeds of up to 250km/h, making them mortally dangerous to passing birdlife and bats. Pacific Hydro originally proposed a wind farm with 70 turbines, but the state government rejected the plans in 2006 due to concerns about the effect on the local eagle population. The area around the wind farm is known for excellent viewing of the birds, producing thermals that allow the eagles to soar to heights of up to two kilometres.
Revised plans for a dramatically scaled back operation were approved in 2010 by the then Energy and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor. Mr Ramholdt, 58, said he feared the number of wedge-tailed eagle deaths could be higher, citing concerns about the accuracy of the bird death count. “I’ve got no beef against wind farms and renewable energy,” he said. “They just built it exactly where it shouldn’t have been built. “We’re adjacent to the Brisbane Ranges national park – they’ve got to cross through those turbines, coming from nesting sites to hunting grounds or foraging areas. It’s like they
[the eagles] have got to cross a busy road all the time.” Pacific Hydro spokesman Adam Chandler said the eagle deaths were reported promptly to the relevant authorities when they were discovered in August and September last year. He said that no deaths had been recorded since then. “The project’s approved management plan specifies a limit of 10 wedge-tailed eagle mortalities within the first year, or an average of seven over two years,” he said – The Courier
Ella gets her groove on Ella’s a national dancing champion and her biggest fans are her sisters Abbey and Molly. The trio, who all dance at Ravenhall’s K and K Calisthenics, competed earlier this month at the Follow Your Dreams national competition in Melbourne which included clubs from interstate and New Zealand. Eleven-year-old Ella, who has Down syndrome, took home the title for the solo dancer with a disability section performing to a medley of her favourite songs from the movie The Greatest Showman. Club welcoming officer Leanne McKenner, who has more than 40 years dance experience, said Ella was proud to come away with a trophy that was “almost as tall as her”. “This is Ella’s fourth year at calisthenics and it’s a good outlet for her and all three sisters do it together,” Ms McKenner said. “She has so much fun … calisthenics has a
good variety of different dance elements and it gives you confidence.” Ella’s younger siblings both competed in duos, Abbey, 10, and eight-year-old Molly earned honourable mentions. The club had 20 dancers competing at the event with eight members also winning the masters troop section for dancers 30 and over. Masters dancer Jacqui Kent also won the solo section for her division. Esther Lauaki

Ballan makeover moves south By Esther Lauaki Nine carparks and street furniture will be among the latest developments in Ballan’s town centre streetscape redesign. Stage two of the upgrade started last week on the south side of Ballan between Cowie and Fisken streets. Extensive works on Inglis Street were completed in August last year, including asphalting, paving and installation of street furniture.
The installation of 11 more bench seats, nine carparking spaces, five bins and three bicycle rails are part of stage two. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said Ballan business owners and community members had spent considerable time assisting the planning and design of the revamp. “In a growing community, I am sure the nine extra carparks will benefit both the traders and community,” Cr Tatchell said. Stage two will also include wider asphalt footpaths, sawn bluestone paving, asphalt

“As part of the works, council is installing underground conduits that will future-proof the street for the potential undergrounding of electricity,” Mr Jeffrey said. “Installation works of this nature may slow the progress of the works, but will definitely provide a better long-term outcome. “We are making every effort to expedite these works, which will enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the street and deliver a great outcome for the Ballan community.”

MY PLACE David Axon loves all things Melton. The long-time resident talks to Esther Lauaki.
A very active resident attending most monthly council meetings. How long have you lived in the area? Lived in Melton since 2007, after living at Essendon for 35 years, when I retired from work at Tullamarine Airport. What are you passionate about? All types of aviation, model and full size, plus other interests in general. Tell us about your involvement with Melton Model Aircraft Association. My involvement with model aircraft goes back to 1954, in England and continued here when I emigrated in 1961 to work for the then TAA, then Australian airlines and finally Qantas. I was in a club at Keilor and when I moved to Melton I joined the club here, flying at Mount Cottrell Reserve. During my time here in Australia, I became involved with the administration side of the organisation. I became the president of the Victorian Model Aeronautical Association then moved on to be the president of the federal body the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia – a position which I held for 11 years. I also was president of the Australian Sport Aviation Confederation for two years … and I am currently the president of the Melton club, which I have held for four years. This keeps me pretty busy.
What other hats do you wear in the community? I am the secretary of the Melton Residents Association, looking after the residents interests in the township of Melton with the postcodes of 3337 and 3338. What’s the quirkiest thing about you? I have a penny farthing bike, which I ride in parades and usually go to Evandale in Tasmania, and now Geelong, to ride in the penny farthing races – not that I ever win. Although last November the organisers of the Geelong races surprised me by organising first place for me as the over 80s rider! This year however, I am not attending Evandale as it clashes with the bi-yearly Avalon Airshow where I and others on our team work for the week, parking commuter aircraft at the Avalon East Airstrip which is at Avalon, separate from the main arena. What do you love about Melton? The city is pretty good in all aspects, but we must prepare for the enormous growth the city is experiencing. What would you like to see improved? I would like to see better roads, especially full diamond access ramps on the Melton Bypass Road and Bulmans Road, which the residents association has been pushing for since the road bridge was constructed. Also traffic lights at Norton Drive before someone gets killed there.

Triathlon is a family affair for the Costanzo sisters of Caroline Springs. Sienna, 13, Ella, 12, and eight-year-old Lucy will take part in the upcoming Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. Early bird registrations are now open for the March 10 Melbourne event, which is part of a national series designed for kids aged seven to 15 – no matter their sports abilities or experience. The sisters’ mum, Lia Costanzo, said her girls were already training for this year’s event, which will be their second together. TRYathlon uses a healthy outdoor activity to boost self-esteem in a friendly environment. Kids in the seven to 10 age group complete a 75-metre swim, three-kilometre cycle and 500-metre run. Athletes aged between 11 and 15 do a 150-metre swim, six-kilometre cycle and a kilometre run. Seven-time world champion surfer Stephanie Gilmore will be at the event acting as a TRY ambassador, awarding kids medallions as they cross the finish line. A sports expo will be held at the event village. Jane Power, from event sponsor Bupa, said that last year more than 14,000 Aussie kids took part in TRYathlon events across the country. “Seeing your kids cross the finish line of the TRYathlon is a big moment for any parent,” Ms Power said. “We’re such long-term supporters of the TRYathlon. “It’s a fantastic event for families around the country to prepare for and get involved in together.” Register early to avoid disappointment as places are limited. FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir revisits an old favourite On a blazing hot Melbourne day, is there any better place to be than luxuriating in the AC-cooled confines of Phi Phi? Nope. It’s been a while since we’ve been here for a feed. The place has had a bit of a makeover and there’s some new faces around. But all else appears much the same – including the superb food. We’re in the house to enjoy it with Brimbank councillors Duyen Anh Pham and Virginia Tachos. We play it safe when ordering – nothing in the way of boundary testing for us during this lunch. But what we do order is AMAZING. Virginia originally wanted Vietnamese coleslaw, but is delighted nevertheless with the rare beef salad with lemon juice ($25). More in a Thai style than Vietnamese, it’s just as tangy as expected and turbocharged with all sorts of greenery. The meat is rare, as promised, and excellent. Good thing we ordered the small version of the combination fried rice ($10), as it’s very generous. It’s also momentously fluffy and studded with many plump and good-sized prawns. This lives on another planet from fried rice of meh bain marie infamy. Silky tofu done in salt and pepper style ($14) is Bennie’s choice – and it doesn’t disappoint. The tofu chunks are profoundly plump and delicious.
We are moving to 60a Grant St Bacchus Marsh
PHI PHI VIETNAMESE & CHINESE RESTAURANT Address: 28 Alfrieda Street, St Albans Phone: 9366 5686 A large serve of roast pork ($18) is incredible. But that’s no surprise, as the barbecue meats here are deservedly a source of pride. It’s all good and mostly tender, with just enough gnarly crunch to keep things interesting. Phi Phi is a jewel of St Albans and the west.

SPORT Lions go down to Lakers but look forward to finals
Bacchus Marsh co-coach Jeff Feben said they were beaten by a better side. (Shawn Smits)
Bacchus Marsh Lions proved no match for Mt Gambier Lakers in the final round of the Country Basketball League south west men’s competition. With both sides already assured a finals spot, it was a good chance to test themselves. The match, though, wasn’t close at all, with the Lakers dominating from the start, winning 113-77. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben said it was a case of the better side getting the win. “It was a very tough night at the office,” he said. “They shot the lights out and they’ve got great players and are a great team. “You can stop one or two players, but nearly anyone in their team could shoot at least 70 per cent. “I think they are a class above the rest of the league.” While the Lakers shot well, their defence was also strong.
Feben said they didn’t allow the Lions shooters to get free and put the score on the board. Jordan Kirk top-scored with 15 points as five Lions players scored double figures. Feben said the standout for the Lions was Josh Borninkhof. “Josh stepped up,” Feben said. “He’s one of our under-21 boys and he was playing taller and bigger than what he is. We made special mention of him after the game.” The loss is the Lions second in a row, but Feben isn’t concerned. He said they had never pencilled the Lakers game in as a win. “We would like to be in winning form. The effort the previous round was not where it should have been. “We played better this week.” The Lions now move onto finals. Feben said the aim pre-season had been to
finish in the top four in their first season and they had been able to do that. “Our first aim was to make the top four and we’ve done that. “We would like to get a finals win as well now and see what happens.” The Lions will face the Portland Coasters in the first week of the finals. The Lions defeated the Coasters during the season. “Portland was a tougher match and they gave us a hard hit-out while we didn’t have a full team. It’s a tough one, but it’s winnable.” Feben said the opportunity to play a home final in their first season was massive for the association. “We’re starting to get a good crowd at games and each week they are exposed to men’s basketball which is one of the pluses.” The Lions will host the final at 8pm on Friday night. After a disastrous two rounds of T20 matches, the Saints were keen to get back to form in the longer format. But they were left thinking what might have been after day one against Ashfield. The Saints were sent in and failed to see out the day, bowled out for 199 in 52.1 overs. While the score is more than competitive, Clayton said it wasn’t what they were after. “It didn’t go to plan,” he said. “It was a good day to bat and we lost bunches of wickets. “We couldn’t build partnerships and it cost us runs and we only batted for 50 overs. “We could have made 300 plus.” Andrew Finn top-scored with 60, while Blair Sole made 51.
After being bowled out early, it meant Ashfield had 10 overs to bat before stumps. It was a good period for the Saints as they picked up two wickets. Ashfield will resume at 2-30. Clayton said he was happy with how they bowled. “We’ve got the runs on the board and having them 2-30 is a good start. “If we bowl well, we’re in with a shot.” Despite sitting on top, Clayton said they couldn’t take any side for granted. Just over five points separates the top four sides, while fifth-placed Ashfield is still in the finals mix. “It’s an even season and really anyone’s game and if you lose a game you’re fighting for spots,” he said. He said the aim for the remaining rounds was consistency. The Saints will have an extra hit-out next week, as they play in the Cricket Willow division 2 T20 final against Colts Phelans.
The finals see the top teams from the region play off against each other. This year, the GDCA selected the teams that were on top of the McIntyre and Johnstone Shield ladders after the one-day matches to represent the association. Bacchus Marsh, which is in division 1, is also through to the final having beaten Barkers Creek in the semi-finals on Sunday. It sets up a clash in the final with Darley. It’s been more than 15 years since the teams played each other. In other GDCA matches, a late order fightback gave Eynesbury Eagles a competitive total against East Sunbury. The Eagles were in trouble at 7-57, but fought back to make 150. The Thunder will resume at 0-15. In the McIntyre Cup, ladder-leader Bacchus Marsh is in a prime position to add another win to its tally. The Bulls made 7-252 against Diggers Rest Bulla.
Rockbank Football Club recruit Adam Forth is looking forward to the challenges of playing football in a new location and new state. Forth, who used to play rugby union, has played all his football in Yass in the AFL Canberra League. In that time he was a premiership player with the club and was awarded life membership. Forth said he made the decision to move to Melbourne because he thought it was the best place to take the next step with his football. “I want to try make something with my footy and there’s not many opportunities up here,” he said. “I think if I’m going to go and play football elsewhere, Melbourne is the best place for that.” Forth said he knew little about his new club, but was excited by what he had been told by coach Lachie Waterman. Waterman is in his first season as the club’s coach and has generated much excitement. “I know that the footy club is celebrating their 100 years,” Forth said. “I spoke to a few other clubs and they were slack getting back to me. “Lachie was really good about it and helped sort it out. He’s more than happy to help.” Forth will be one of the more experienced players for the Rams. He said he was more than happy to help pass on his knowledge to younger teammates. Forth can play defence and in the middle, but said his best position was full-back. “I like to play full-back, so I can help control the game a bit,” he said. “I’m hoping it’s a bit tougher.” Forth said he was hoping to make the move to the area in the coming weeks. Waterman said Forth was a great addition to the Rams’ list. “We targeted a key defender and, at 28 years old, Adam has a lot to offer,” Waterman said. “He’s keen and hungry.” The Rams will resume pre-season training this week. St Anthonys’ Amanda Quirk and Melton Centrals’ Candace Hulett have been named in the west team for the inaugural Cricket Victoria women’s Regional Big Bash T20 match. The teams have been selected on their performances from the Women’s Community Cricket Competition, with the best players from the north-west competitions to play against the best from the south-east teams. The match will be played on Sunday at noon at Camberwell Sports Ground.

Melton bats need to fire By Tara Murray Melton will need a good day with the bat if it is to beat Williamstown in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west. With both sides looking to cement their spots in the top six, the match is important in the context of the season. The Seagulls won the toss and elected to bat on their home pitch. They lost one early wicket, before a second wicket partnership of 117 put the side back on
track. Then at 2-172 the Seagulls looked headed for a massive score. The Lions responded and started to pick up some late wickets. The closing overs saw the Lions take 8-66. Lions skipper Brad Jones was the pick of the bowlers, taking 6-33 off 16.1 overs. The total of 238, though, will be a tricky one for the Lions, who are yet to make that many runs in a game this season. Only twice have they passed 200, including in their last round loss to Elsternwick. Meanwhile the Lions, JC Craig Shield

under-15 team finished the pool matches with two wins. After winning their first match of the competition, the Lions needed to wait until round five to win again – this time against Hoppers Crossing. The Lions made 106 before bowling Hoppers Crossing out for 65. Opening bowler Josh Oldfield took 4-6 to do the damage early on. Oldfield was also the pick of the batsmen, top scoring with 20 before being run out. Overall, the Lions finished sixth in the west pool, only above Hoppers Crossing.
