Sisters share a class act The transition to a new school will be extra exciting for Emily and Grace. Emily, 11, and Grace, seven, this week will be among the first pupils at Burnside Primary School and both will be in a year 3-6 composite class while enrolment levels build. Dad Glynn Lavender said his daughters were very happy about getting back into the classroom. “They’re excited for the new start and, after seven weeks at home, they are more than ready to go back to school,” Mr Lavender said. He said he was interested to see how the girls handled being in the same class. “If it works well, then it will be a great opportunity for them to experience school together,” he said. School principal Davide Lombardi said the sisters’ teacher would vary the work of the composite class. “It is not uncommon for teachers to differentiate their teaching methods to meet the varying needs of each child in one class,” he said. “I believe that when teachers are provided with professional learning and dialogue, and are continually asked to reflect on their current practice, they will develop their capacity as educators.” The school is set to accommodate up to 475 pupils this year. Humbled by medal honour By Ewen McRae Nearly 27 years after migrating to Australia, Caroline Springs’ Haileluel Gebre-Selassie has been awarded a medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours. Mr Gebre-Selassie, 48, received the medal for service to the African community of Victoria, but he downplayed the honour when he spoke to Star Weekly. “I’m honoured, but at the same time humbled,” he said. “There are so many people who achieve a lot of stuff more than me I believe … I’m happy to be acknowledged, but I don’t do things just for this.”
Originally from Ethiopia, Mr Gebre-Selassie, the son a of a priest, migrated to Australia in 1992, receiving Australian citizenship four years later. He has been actively involved in the community across Melbourne, but has lived in Caroline Springs for the past 14 years. Among his many roles, he is a founding member and current chairperson of the African Think Tank, convenor of the Victorian Police African Australian Communities Task Force, initiated and now chairs the African Leadership Development Program and is board member of the Brimbank Melton Local Learning Employment Network.
“The past 10 years, one of my big focuses has been growing the capacity for leaders within the African community,” he said. “We’ve graduated more than 240 community leaders across many countries. The idea is like a small boat in the high seas. When you see a boat in the high seas you need to stabalise that to save the lives of those in the boat … the different communities are like that boat within this beautiful, big country, which is the seas. “I’m really excited and very happy with what we’ve been able to achieve.” Mr Gebre-Selassie paid tribute to his wife, Hamere, and daughters Loza and Salem for their support.

Hunt for Taylors Lakes gunman Police are on the hunt for a gunman after he opened fire on a father-to-be and three other men in a suspected carjacking gone wrong. Onosai Kuka, 25, was driving his two brothers and a friend to work along the Melton Highway at Taylors Lakes about 2am last Tuesday when shots were fired at his car. Mr Kuka said that the gunman was in a silver sedan with a number of people inside the vehicle. He said that the driver of the sedan threatened to ram his vehicle and followed him a short distance before producing a firearm and
spraying his car with bullets. “I saw the driver pull out the gun and try to shoot us,” Mr Kuka said. One bullet shattered the rear window of Mr Kuka’s car, while another bullet narrowly missed the head of a back-seat passenger before it pierced Mr Kuka’s headrest and grazed the back of his neck. “I was screaming because it hurts,” he said. Mr Kuka said it was a “miracle” he was alive, but said he was worried the gunman would strike again. “We need to get rid of those people … they are very dangerous,” he said.
He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was cleared of any serious injury. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said multiple shots had been fired at the vehicle, resulting in an injury to the driver. Armed Crime Squad detectives confirmed they were investigating the circumstances of the shooting. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. – The Age

Tails of delight Melton dog-owners have an opportunity to change lives by sharing the pet love around. Animal hospital Lort Smith is calling for volunteers and their well-behaved dogs for its pet therapy program. The program, which began in 1987, involves volunteers taking their dogs into hospitals, aged care and mental health facilities, homeless shelters, and a variety of other settings. Pet therapy aims to comfort people experiencing illness, pain, adversity and loneliness. An information session for the western suburbs will be held at Sunshine Hospital this Thursday (January 31). Melton resident Linda Willis has volunteered and mentored for more than four years. “The people I have met doing pet therapy in aged care have stolen my heart,” Ms Willis said. “I love to hear about their lives and bring them some pet joy, and a reprieve from their day to day routines.
“My confidence has grown in leaps and bounds, and I now accept so many new challenges and take them in my stride.” Lort Smith community outreach co-ordinator Megan Nutbean said she had seen first-hand how the program transforms lives. “In some aged care facilities we have seen people with dementia, who haven’t spoken for years, start smiling again, patting and talking to the animals,” she said. Volunteers must have good-natured and well-behaved dogs, commit to half a day weekly or fortnightly during business hours and have their own transport. Booking for the information session is essential: www lortsmith.com/volunteer/pettherapy Esther Lauaki Linda Willis with Cookie, a six-year-old Maltese terrier. (Dennis Manktelow)

Scouting the world Caroline Springs Scouts have been expanding their horizons interstate and overseas – and now they’re back and buzzing with stories from their travels. Dozens of Scouts from the local troop converged on Tailem Bend in South Australia earlier this month for the 25th Australian Jamboree. More than 12,000 Scouts attended the annual 10-day event. Scouts Alora and Hayden and leader Carolyn Pemberton were selected to be part of the Australian contingent that travelled across the ditch for the Illuminate 14th New Zealand Venture. The group travelled the country undertaking a variety of adventurous activities.
Another member, Xavier, spent the school holidays on an exchange trip to Denmark. Caroline Springs leader Claire Mouser said the adventures were “once-in-a-lifetime experiences”. “This is where they get to show their own resilience,” Ms Mouser said. “They get to show their leadership skills and pick their own adventures.” She said that the troop was looking forward to many more adventures at its new home base in Caroline Springs, with its $1.6 million hall due to open next month. “The hall has involved eight years of planning and fundraising,” Ms Mouser said. Bulmans Road on the radar Melton traffic congestion is on the agenda for VicRoads and an interchange at Bulmans Road in Brookfield is one of the options being explored. Brookfield residents and Melton council last week renewed calls for a full diamond interchange at Bulmans and Clarkes roads to ease traffic during peak times. VicRoads’ transport and planning metro north west director David Teague told Star Weekly that land on Bulmans and Harkness roads had been reserved for a potential future full diamond interchange with the Western Freeway. “We’re upgrading roads right across Melton to slash congestion and make it easier and safer for people to get to where they need to go,” Mr Teague said. He said that VicRoads was working through potential options to improve traffic flow along the Western Freeway. Tim Roberts, of the Brookfield 3338 residents group, launched an online petition which attracted more than 3500 signatures in three weeks. “A large number of residents that we have spoken to had expressed the frustration with having to drive two kilometres in the wrong direction to travel westbound on the Western Freeway,” Mr Robert said. Melton council also said the proposed interchange was a “high priority” and it would continue to advocate to the state and federal governments. Esther Lauaki

Community heroes young and young at heart were the toast of the town at Melton’s Australia Day celebrations. Maureen Mohr was named the municipality’s Citizen of the Year last Saturday at the Community Achievement Awards ceremony alongside five other standout community leaders. Ms Mohr was rewarded for her willingness to “step in where needed”, whether to help women escape domestic violence or volunteer at the Melton Botanic Garden. “I’m a volunteer, I’m an aging well ambassador among a number of other roles,” Ms Mohr said. “I feel very humbled about the whole thing … I think that everybody needs help at some time and I have a very understanding husband who supports me when I bring home boxes of things that need to be sorted and distributed to different organisations and charity causes.” Ms Mohr is a member of the Nordic walking group and volunteers at breakfast clubs at churches and schools and is on various Melton council arts and cultural committees. At the weekend’s ceremony, joint Young Citizen of the Year awards went to Brandon Rogers and Emily Attard. Brandon was awarded for his leadership role at the Western Bulldogs, his passion for family violence prevention and mentoring youth, while Emily developed and runs Specialist Hoops Basketball Melton, a weekly basketball program for people with a disability from low income families. Among the other recipients were Gender Equity Leader of the Year Tiff Lykke, who aims to smash gender stereotypes at the Melton Wolves Gridiron Club; and Access

Plumpton clean-up, fines order By Esther Lauaki A Plumpton property owner has been fined and ordered by the County Court to undertake a clean-up of industrial waste at his property. The court convicted Mendo Kitanovski of failing to comply with two clean-up notices from Environment Protection Authority Victoria in 2013. The case reached its conclusion when Kitanovski pled guilty to the charges in December, 2017, and was sentenced earlier this

month. He was fined $3500 and ordered to clean-up his property to remove a substantial amount of industrial waste that had been deposited at his premises, which was not licensed to receive it.
EPA executive director Lara Jimenez said it had been a complex and long-running case. “This is a good outcome,” Ms Jimenez said. “It upholds EPA’s original requirement that Mr Kitanovski clean up the property, and while the fine may be comparatively small, the cost of dealing with the dumped waste may be considerable. “As with any case, EPA’s primary objective has been to have the site cleaned up, for the protection of the community and the environment.
“This is a reminder to anyone who is issued with an official clean-up notice or pollution abatement notice by EPA that those notices are to be taken seriously and there are serious consequences for those who don’t comply.” Between 2012 and 2013, the EPA found large piles of soil, industrial waste, tile, piping, asphalt and plastic on Mr Kitanovski’s property. Officers observed 30 large trucks enter and leave the property in a single day during that time.
Jordyn’s on the charge Melton’s Jordyn Charge says he exceeded his own expectations after competing at one of speedway’s biggest events. The 19 year-old raced at the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic earlier this month at Warrnambool – his fourth time at the premier speedway event. Charge had a consistent run in the heat races with third and fourth-place finishes rewarding him with a top-10 start position for the 30-lap preliminary feature race. He said “he drove his heart out”, narrowly missing out on a top-10 finish but picking up the Hard Charger Award for advancing the most positions during the race. “Just to qualify for the feature race for the country’s biggest speedway event is a massive accomplishment, but to be so close to cracking into the top 10 and also picking up the hard-charger award was amazing,” Charge said. “None of this would have been possible
without the support of my whole family and the guidance of my mentor and crew chief Matthew Reed, who all put so much into my racing.” Charge and his team will take on Hamilton’s Western Speedway for the eighth round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds series on February 16. Esther Lauaki

“It’s important that people learn about how they can care for our environment because it’s under threat. “The local environment is constantly being diminished, particularly with all the development that’s happening around the municipality. “There are various groups out there that depend on volunteers – for example the Pinkerton Landcare and Environment group that is creating a new forest on a vacant block of land. Without volunteers, much less work gets done.” The Nature Stewards program, open to anyone aged 18 or above and living in Melton, has 20 available places. Melton deputy mayor Lara Carli said the program was an opportunity for people to meet others and connect with nature.

NEWS
MY PLACE Kevin Harper has a hand in a number of Moorabool’s most popular initiatives. The Mt Egerton resident speaks to Esther Lauaki about being named the Citizen of the Year. I moved from Williamstown to Mount Egerton nearly 20 years ago: the brief was to find a property which ticked all the rural boxes yet was with an hour’s drive of Melbourne’s western suburbs. Starting at Kilmore, each weekend we would swing around the one-hour arc and eventually found this oasis of tranquility 10 minutes from Ballan, 6 minutes from Gordon and 20 minutes to Ballarat. Ballan was quite a different place 20 years ago. But it’s very welcoming to newcomers, offering hand-up help and support: fixing tractors, delivering hay, providing advice on chainsaws and offering opportunities to be involved. What hats do you wear in the community? One of the first things I was able to do in the early years was to secure a $20,000 grant for a new organ and piano at St John’s Ballan, a second-hand organ for St John’s Bungaree and a digital piano for St James’ in Morrison. Why do you feel it’s important to serve your community? I am motivated when I listen to people’s needs and aspirations, when I sense a willingness of a group to work together and then I become excited about how I can work with that group to make it happen. Congratulations on being named Moorabool Shire Citizen of the Year. How do you feel? Being named Citizen of the Year was rather
a shock for me: I see so many people in our community working tirelessly for the good of others, often this has been done over many years whilst they have been sacrificing so much – and they just keep giving until they are spent. So I accept this honour that in turn I may honour them and bring their work to the attention of others. How long have you been involved with the Ballan Autumn Festival? I have been involved with the Ballan Autumn Festival since 2013; with Ballarat Hospice Care since 2009. These ‘hats’ have provided many opportunities to engage with other groups and causes across Moorabool and in Ballarat. What do you love about Moorabool? One of the joys of living in a rural shire is the ability to walk for 30 minutes in the Main Street and to know that in those 30 minutes you have an opportunity to help someone and to make a difference. In that 30 minutes it’s possible to do at least one of these things: to arrange a community meeting, help someone see their problems in perspective, listen to an old joke, tell an old joke, make someone smile, wipe someone’s tears or share someone’s journey. What would you like to see improved? This is a difficult one, so I say to myself: “If in being Citizen of the Year you were given one wish for the community, what would it be?” I’m still thinking, and hoping that the year of office will show where the need is.
(Shawn Smits)

Mayor’s Message
SUMMERSAULT
Cr Bob Turner Every New Year, we make lots of resolutions with the hope of improving our lives and world around us; resolutions like pledging to get healthy, learn a language, or make new friends. If your new year’s resolution is to meet new people and make a difference to the lives of others, then volunteering might be something worth considering. Volunteering improves your physical and mental wellbeing, builds a sense of purpose and satisfaction, and importantly, has a positive impact on the lives of others.
Summersault is almost here and the huge line up of talented performers and entertainment means it’s an event not to be missed. The event kicks off with a carnival at 2pm, with games, rides, food vendors and attractions. The main event – along with main stage entertainment – then begins at 4pm. The live music includes sets from Horns of Leroy, Maddy Jane, Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Saskwatch, Kingswood and APRA awardwinning dance music group The Potbelleez. Other highlights include the Twilight Market Village, a visit from Sesame Street favourites Elmo, the Cookie Monster and Nickelodeon’s Chase and Marshall from Paw Patrol and a Youth Zone. A glittery fireworks finale will top off the evening at 10pm. Summersault is a family-friendly, alcohol-free event. For more info visit melton.vic.gov.au/summersault

In our community, there’s a group or organisation to suit everyone’s interests; from sports like cricket, hockey, and athletics; to service and business groups; organisations that work with young people and seniors; to special interest groups focussing on art, music and movement.
There truly is something for everyone. So if you’d like to get involved, visit melton.vic.gov.au/volunteer or volunteeringvictoria.org.au Volunteers are the life-blood of our City and we work hard to support organisations that give generously of their time and expertise. Council offers a number of grants that help build strong community groups so they can deliver vital activities, programs, and projects, that respond to local needs. We also have grants to help new groups establish themselves, and go on to lead projects and initiatives that benefit our community. To find out more about Council’s community grant program, visit: melton.vic.gov.au/grants To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au
Coburn Ward
Cr Melissa De Santis I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year, and hope that 2019 brings you all health and prosperity. For many people, the festive season can be an isolating and difficult time. We often see an increase in the reporting of family violence, suicide and homelessness during this time, and grief can also be escalated. That’s why I urge everyone not to wait for RUOK Day, and check on family and friends who may be experiencing difficulties. The RUOK? website, ruok.org.au, provides a guide to help ask if someone’s ok and see how people are doing. I’m very pleased to report that my Notice of Motion to design a new high ball stadium in Melton, was passed at our November 2018 meeting. This motion secured funding to complete
the design of the facility which will provide greater access to a range of sports including basketball, netball, badminton, table tennis, and futsal, plus school and community health programs. This is a project I’ve strongly advocated for since I was elected as Councillor for our great City, and I couldn’t be happier with this result. Visit melton.vic.gov.au for updates. Finally, I’d like to wish our youngest residents the best of luck as they embark on a new school year, and urge residents to be mindful of 40km/h zones around school crossings. Please feel free to contact me on 0437 236 597 or melissa.desantis@melton.vic.gov.au with any Council issues.

23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 29, 2019
SPORT Storm sees back-to-back premierships on horizon Sydenham-Hillside has added more consistency to its game in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Women’s competition. The inaugural premiers have continued to build from last season’s win and are on top of the ladder this season. Storm captain Catherine Morrow said having a year under their belt had really paid off. “It has been a pretty consistent year, despite not playing as much as we would have liked with the weather,” Morrow said “The girls want to play every week. “We’ve got a couple of new players who have done really well and those who played last season … have really improved.” The Storm has started to blood the next generation of cricketers. Teenagers Nikita Chaudhary and Ellie Liron are two of those who have been given their opportunity in recent weeks. Liron, who made her debut two games ago, became part of the club’s first mother and daughter combination to take the field.
Another talented junior, Hannah Brne, who is part of the women’s side, was part of the Vic Spirit under-18 team. Morrow said there was good signs for the future with the players coming through. “It’s been really great,” Morrow said. “When they are ready to move up to premier cricket, they would have played with us and learnt a lot. “We’re happy with the future, there’s a lot of talent coming through. “There’s opportunities now in women’s sport especially cricket, it’s fantastic to see the hard work pay off. “The sky is the limit.” On Sunday, the Storm faced Greenvale Kangaroos for a third straight round. Like the past two matches, the Storm came away with the win. The Storm batting first, made 3-152 off their 20 overs on the back of 90 not out from Morrow. The Kangaroos could only manage 6-101 in reply.
Brne took two wickets, while Brooke Todero, Vicki Kokkinidis, Anna Calabretta and Lara Srbinovski all took one wicket. The Storm have a bye this week, before playing their last regular season match on February 17. The top two teams go through to the grand final the following weekend. The Storm currently sit first, nine points clear of second-placed Westmeadows. Morrow said a second straight title was the focus. “That’s the aim, but you never know what will happen,” she said. “If we play to our strengths and play our game and everyone contributes as a team, I think we can give it a shake to go back-to-back.” Meanwhile in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Competition inaugural Big Bash match, the East team came away with victory over the west team. Tara Murray
Lions begin to roar By Tara Murray Darley is slowly starting to hit its straps in the Ballarat Cricket Association. After an up and down season, the Lions lived up to their potential against NapoleonsSebastopol at the weekend to keep their slight finals hopes alive. Lions coach Michael Alexander said they were closer to hitting their targets. “It was a really good result and we batted well,” he said. “We’ve been crying out to play the longer format as we think that suits us better. “It’s nice to finish the season with three two-dayers.” The Lions started the day needing 188 to win and that target proved an easy one as they went on to make 7-290. There were contributions across the board as five players scored at least 20. Alexander said the stats showed some good signs for the side. “We had some good partnerships with one of 100 plus and another one that was nearly 50.” Andrew Metcalf, in his second game for the club, top scored with 75. Metcalf joined the Lions after playing with teammate Richard Moore in England. Metcalf was well supported by Danza Hyatt (51) and Joel Cadman (62). Alexander said he was thrilled with Cadman’s development. “Joel is just 18 and is going to be a class player,” he said. “He came in when we needed another 50 to 60 to win. He’s been our best batsman along with Danza all season. “At 18 he’s coming in during tough periods and been playing really well. “He’s matured.” Despite the result, the Lions slipped further behind the top four and finals spot. Fourth-placed North Ballarat had an outright win to increase the gap over the seventh-placed Lions to 16 points with three rounds remaining. Alexander said the result wasn’t ideal while they were trying to close the gap. “We need an outright now,” he said. “We have three games left so all we can do is play good cricket and hope some results go our way.” The Lions have a couple of big weeks in the T20 format as well. On Monday (January 28) the Lions faced cross-town rivals Bacchus Marsh in the Cricket Willow T20 division 1 final. The winner will go through to the Regional Big Bash T20 state finals. 24 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 29, 2019

They then play in the semi-finals of the BCA’s T20 competition on Sunday against Mt Clear, with the winner to play in the grand final on March 3. Alexander said they had spoken about the importance of taking these games seriously. “They’re not necessarily the finals we want
to play, but it’s still a finals experience which is good for the players. “Hopefully it helps.” For more on the finals, between the Lions and Bacchus Marsh and the division two final involving St Anthonys, go to www.starweekly. com.au/sports

Melton’s bats need to fire Melton needs an improved performance with the bat if it is to keep its finals hopes alive in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west. While the Lions are only percentage outside the top six, their form – especially with the bat – has been patchy. That was evident again on Saturday against Williamstown, with the Lions losing by 98 runs. Needing 239 for victory, the Lions were bundled out for 140. Lions coach Nathan Geisler was frustrated by his side’s performance. “It was disappointing,” he said. “It was always a tough run chase, but we were 8-80 and were lucky to get to 140. “We didn’t apply ourselves … we lost two early wickets and then lost 6-20-odd in the middle.” The Lions’ 10th wicket partnership was their biggest of the day; it put on 60. Ash Sweet scored most of them, making 53. Opener Ben MacRae had earlier made 31. Geisler said all the team’s batsmen seemed to have issues when it came to two-day cricket. “We seem to be losing wickets in clumps,” he said. “We’re either four down for not many or losing them in the middle order. We need to be eliminating that … we spoke about it after the game. “It’s more a mindset sort of thing, as I think we have the skill.” Despite their struggles, the Lions remain in the finals mix. Geisler said the most frustrating thing was that if they had been batting to their potential, they could well and truly be cemented in the top six. “There are four or five sides fighting for that sixth spot,” he said. “If we win all three of our games, we will play finals. “It’s been disappointing that we’ve lost those last two and haven’t sealed a spot.” The Lions will this week face Yarraville, which moved into the top six at the expense of the Lions at the weekend. The two teams are equal on points. Geisler said the club would likely stick with the same players. Tara Murray

New-look Melton has eyes on Big V finals action Melton Thoroughbreds are looking to build on last year in the Big V women’s division 2 competition. With the team last season taking to the court for the first time since 2010, it was always going to be a bit of an unknown. But having now played a season together, coach Lauren Olcorn said they were expecting to make some huge inroads this season. “We want to push forward,” she said. “We’ve got a strong foundation in place.” “Last year everyone had Big V experience, but we’re now more settled into the team. “There’s so much potential on paper, now we have to put it on the court. “This season we want to be pushing into the top four and being one of the teams to beat.”
One area the Thoroughbreds have been focusing on in the off season has been team bonding. Olcorn said they were trying to make that a strength, hoping it would then flow onto the court. “We’ve got half the old team and half a new team,” she said. “The girls are gelling well and have come back and hit the court hard. “The team bonding is very important not just on the floor but supporting each other off field as well.” Olcorn, who is focusing on coaching this season, said there had been some good numbers at the try-outs. She said they had been able to bring in a number of players they think will strengthen the side. The core group has returned, including
Caitlyn Spence, Chantelle Paris-Webb, Jenna and Lauren Conroy, Molly Young and Rebecca Marshall. With the new players added to the group, Olcorn said they had focused on looking for players who would add some more flexibility. Taylah Lea comes across from Werribee and is a strong and athletic guard. Twins Allanna Procak and Stacey Procak join the Thoroughbreds and bring championship experience, having played with last season’s division 2 premiers Craigieburn Eagles. Ashleigh Rozenfeld, who was playing with Corio Stingrays, is another who joins along with Jessica Kivimets, who returns to Melton having been at Sunbury in recent years. Further adding to the Thoroughbreds

women’s program is the establishment of an under-21 girls team in the Victorian Junior Basketball League. The team has been training with the senior team. Olcorn said the club was looking to field a Big V youth league side next year. “We’ve set small goals and the under-21 team is one of them and several players are development players for the senior side. “It’s great to see juniors coming through the ranks and we’re setting up the women’s program for them in the long term.” The Thoroughbreds will host a practice match on February 16 against Melbourne University as 8pm at Melton Indoor Recreation Centre. By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh Lions have a shot at a grand final spot after beating the Portland Coasters in the first week of the Country Basketball League south-west men’s finals on Friday night. After ending the regular season with two straight losses, the Lions produced some of their best basketball against the Coasters. In front of their home crowd, the Lions grabbed an early lead and for much of the game led by more than 10 points. But the Lions were never able to run away with the game, eventually winning 81-68. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben said it was their best team performance of the season. “The energy was really good, as was the support from the players on the bench,” he said. Feben said that while he would have liked to have given his bench more minutes and experience, the Coasters kept coming. “We did get a lead of about 10-12 points and it blew out to about 16,” he said. “But they would bring it back to about seven points. “I felt confident during the game we would get the win, but they never gave up.” Co-captain Jordan Kirk was the standout with 24 points. As the Lions’ most experienced player, he stood up when it was needed. “Kirky was super and strong all game,” Feben said. “It wasn’t only his best game for us … I’ve known him for a long time and it’s the best I’ve seen him play in a critical time. “He kept pushing and made some hard baskets.” The coach said Kirk was well supported by Jas Christian and Billy Feben. Diquan Williams had 11 points, while Billy Feben and Christian had 10 points each. Jeff Feben also had praise for the side’s talls, who stood up strong on the boards and were able to pull down several rebounds. The Lions will play Horsham Hornets on Saturday night at Horsham for a spot in the grand final. The two teams played once this season, with the Hornets having a big win, 101-57, against the undermanned Lions in round two. Jeff Feben said it would be very different this time around. He said the Lions would have a full list of players to select from and they were encouraging supporters to make the trip to Horsham. “Last time it was just Bill and the bench, this time we’ll have a full team,” he said. “If you have a look at what they did to Terang, who scored 100 points against us – they kept them to 51 points. “It will be a hard match for us, but you never know what will happen in finals.” Feben said no matter the result this weekend, they were already happy with what they had achieved in their debut season. “To make the grand final in our first year is a pipe dream,” he said. “We’re pretty happy with where we’re at and anything else is a bonus now.”

Melton South Royals have endured a day to forget in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s division 5 Russell Pollock Shield. The Royals would have been thrilled with their bowling performance, which restricted Gellibrand to 96. But the Royals failed with the bat, bowled out for 60. Melton Centrals enjoyed a better day, defeating Aberfeldie Park. In division 4, Sydenham-Hillside and Caroline Springs had wins.

Bacchus Marsh increased its lead at the top of the table in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts with victory against Diggers Rest Bulla. Having made 7-252, the Bulls bowled the Burras out for 100 in 38 overs. Only two players reached 20 for the Burras. Madushanka Ekanayaka took six wickets for the Bulls. With second-placed Gisborne losing, the Bulls are sitting just over seven points clear of the Dragons.
Baseball
The North Western Titans had a tough day out against ladder leaders St Kilda Saints in Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3. The Titans’ desire for an upset were dashed, with the Saints winning 11-2. The loss leaves the Titans in fifth with a 3-12 record and with three rounds remaining. The Titans’ women’s side had a bye. It will face Springvale Lions Blue on Saturday.
