A big day for prep twins Eight of Kororoit Creek Primary School’s newest pupils were twice as excited as their peers about starting school. Four sets of twins experienced their first day together at the Burnside Heights school last week. Principal Blayne Wallis said it was a first for the school to have so many sets of multiples in one year. “We usually have at least one or two sets of twins, but this year we have four and that will be a first for us,” Ms Wallis said. “It’s very exciting that we have plenty of preps … we have eight classes and in total 187 preps that will be starting school with us this year.” Ms Wallis said that the prep influx indicated the growth of Burnside Heights. “We have a lot of parents that want to enrol their kids in our school because we have a wonderful staff of teachers and very supportive school community,” she said. “That’s why I think that people are knocking at our door to send their children here. “Our short-term goal is to make sure that the kids are happy and building strong relationships with their teachers and their peers, all while learning.” Esther Lauaki

He said the cameras could also help deter crime and, in the event of a crime or anti-social behaviour, help police find those responsible. “The purpose of this program is to prevent crime from happening,” Mr Payne said. “Ideally, we’d never have to access the data

Diggers Rest residents have stepped up their security and introduced cameras with number plate recognition technology. A safety cam initiative, the brainchild of Community Against Crime director Tim Payne, was launched two years ago after a spate of burglaries in the area. Some Teatree Street residents took their safety into their own hands by installing live view camera systems on their properties to record 24-hour footage from various points along the street. Participating residents can access real-time

footage of movement in their street and can also contact one another via a dedicated online messenger group, so information can be shared. The neighbourhood watch was ramped up last week with number plate recognition cameras installed as part of a new Safe Streets program. About 18 of 22 properties in the street have sign up for the program. Mr Payne said it gave residents in the street “peace of mind”. “Number plate recognition is existing technology that is used at petrol stations in the event of drive-offs,” he said. “How many times do we hear [on the news] that a car was

Changed bus route under attack By Ewen McRae A group of concerned residents is petitioning the state government to reinstate the Caroline Springs to city bus route, claiming there are serious safety concerns with the new routes. The 216 bus route was altered in November 2017. It previously went from Caroline Springs to the city, but now starts in Sunshine. A new 426 route takes passengers from Caroline Springs to Sunshine.

Petitioner Pauline Farrugia said having no continuous service from the outer western suburbs to the city had had a big impact on many passengers. “Previously we could get on a bus in Caroline Springs, or other places west of Sunshine and have an uninterrupted ride to the city,” she said. “Now we have to change in Sunshine, and if you miss the connection you have to wait. A lot of the people who use the service are elderly, or travelling alone, and if you get stranded by yourself at night it can be quite scary.

“I had a situation where I was by myself until 1am, and I hid so no one could see I was alone. It’s a real concern for many people.” Ms Farrugia said it was a case of inequality. “It’s another case of the western suburbs being overlooked,” she said. “In the eastern suburbs you have more options, and out here we seem to get neglected. We only have trains and buses to get into the city, and if you have to keep hopping on and off, sometimes with a walker or shopping, it’s very inconvenient.” A Public Transport Victoria spokesperson

said the change in route was brought in to improve service reliability. “PTV continually looks for ways to improve our public transport network and to improve links between services,” they said. “Route 426 gives passengers better reliability and timetabled connections to train stations on the Sunbury line. “PTV works closely with Victoria Police, and our bus, tram and train operators, to ensure the ongoing safety of our passengers.” The petition can be viewed at tinyurl.com/ yb8m2bay

Blitz highlights safety issues Speedsters, unregistered vehicles and unlicensed drivers were among the targets of a traffic blitz during the Australia Day long weekend. Melton Highway Patrol detected 57 speeding offences, 14 unregistered motor vehicles, 12 unlicensed drivers and nine who were disqualified, two drink drivers and six using mobile phones. In total, 159 tickets were issued during the four days of Operation Amity, which wrapped up at midnight on January 28. Melton police said the results highlighted a number of areas of concern. “During this period, there was no serious injury or fatal accidents recorded in the Melton PSA,” a post on the Melton Eyewatch Facebook page said. “But the results do indicate that we can still be doing more to remain safe on our roads.” In Moorabool, the Highway Patrol detected 19 speeding offences, two drink drivers, one disqualified, three unlicensed and three unregistered vehicles. Road policing assistant commissioner Stephen Leane said that while drink-driving offences were decreasing, the number of drivers being nabbed under the influence of drugs was concerning. “We’ve been working on drink-driving for the past 30 years and I think we’re finally getting through to the majority of the community that drinking and driving is dangerous,” he said. “We still need to work with a lot more of our community in making them understand that using drugs … and then driving is also dangerous.”

Observe the fine print Work inspired by thousands of years of Chinese art is being showcased at Caroline Springs and Melton libraries. The exhibition, Four Treasures, features ink painting and calligraphy techniques that have been in use since the Han Dynasty – from about 200BC. The title of the exhibition refers to the ink brush, inkstick, rice paper and inkstone – the four “tools” of these revered art forms. Four Treasures, created and curated by members of the Melton Chinese Friendship Association, includes more than 40 works. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the exhibition highlighted the skill and patience of the artists. “It’s wonderful that the Melton Chinese Friendship Association has been able to share the roots of this ancient art with us,” Cr Turner said. “At first glance, ink painting and calligraphy may look simpshanle, but many hours of practice goes into perfecting each and every character and brush stroke. “That’s why we’re delighted to have teaching artists Mr Chen and Mr Huang from the association running free workshops for anyone who would like to try their hand at this ancient art.” The exhibition will run until March 13. The school was recently redeveloped and donated its used equipment to a Flemington Rotary project that helps underprivileged children overseas. The school’s community engagement officer Tolley Cacavas said three playgrounds at the school had to be dismantled to make way for construction. “The new playgrounds look fantastic and are a big hit with all our students on day one of the 2019 school year,” Mr Cacavas said.

“The students from junior school council were consulted and given a strong voice in choosing equipment design, colour and layout for three new playgrounds. “Members of the junior council worked collaboratively with the assistant principal … and the students suggested that it would be a good idea for the [old] play equipment to be reused by other children. “The equipment is now on its way to be reconstructed to provide enjoyment for disadvantaged children in … Sri Lanka.” Esther Lauaki

Summer fest springs up again By Esther Lauaki Music, food and good vibes – those will be the key notes of this year’s Summersault festival. The annual Caroline Springs town centre celebration will feature a raft of market stalls, carnival rides and amusements and children’s entertainment. To be held on Saturday, February 9, the festival will include music from Horns of Leroy, Maddy Jane, Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Saskwatch, Kingswood and dance music group The Potbelleez. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the festival was a summer event not to be missed.

“Summersault is a showcase of sensational music, food, market stalls, youth activities, rides and entertainment for the whole family – topped off by a spectacular fireworks finale,” Cr Turner said. Caroline Springs Senior Sergeant Jason Dolman said police would be out and about to ensure a safe and enjoyable event. “From inside and outside the festival grounds, at transport hubs and across the Caroline Springs and Melton area, police will be out to ensure everyone has a safe time,” he said. “We want to encourage all Caroline Springs residents and visitors to come along and enjoy

everything on offer at Summersault this year, as we know the vast majority of attendees do. “Our presence will send a clear message to anyone thinking about attending the event to cause trouble. “We’re excited to see festival-goers enjoy the event. “Our officers will also be around long after the event concludes to ensure everyone gets home safely.” Summersault 2019 will start at 2pm and conclude with the Woodlea fireworks finale at 10pm. Entry is free. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/Out-n-About/ Events/Summersault

Teal has its appeal Melton and Caroline Springs residents are being encouraged to paint the town teal for ovarian cancer awareness month. Residents can show their support for the cause this month by hosting a Paint the Town Teal fundraising event to support Australians impacted by the disease. Teal ribbons can also be bought at Terry White Chemmart Watergardens and other participating stockists. Ovarian Cancer Australia chief executive Jane Hill said while ovarian cancer is the deadliest women’s cancer in Australia, it is also one of the most underfunded. “We rely on our fundraising community so we can continue to deliver awareness, support, advocacy and research programs,” Ms Hill said. “Paint the Town Teal fundraising events can be big, small or somewhere in between.

“They can range from an intimate movie night, a barbecue with friends, an afternoon tea or a gala dinner, trivia, games or bingo nights are great fun. “Anything goes, as long as it’s teal and you’re supporting women living with ovarian cancer and their families.” Details: www.paintthetownteal.net.au Esther Lauaki

Cool it call on danger days By Esther Lauaki A Melton veterinarian clinic is urging dog owners to hit “paws” on walking their pets while the summer continues to sizzle. The clinic issued the warning as temperatures have been hitting the high 30s. Veterinary nurse Suzanne Arnett said walking dogs when the ground was too hot could cause serious damage. “We are still seeing people walking and running their dogs in this extreme heat,” she

said. “Your dog is at risk of heat stroke, which can lead to death, or your dog is at risk of getting severe burns on their feet. “Before you take your dog for a walk, feel the footpath with your hand – if it is too hot to touch, it is too hot for your dog. “If you cannot tolerate the hot footpaths yourself in bare feet, your dog can’t either.” RSPCA Victoria recommends dogs be walked in early morning or evening coolness. “It can be a good idea to take your pet to your local beach, creek or river to let them

have a paddle and cool down,” the RSPCA recommends. “This will help your pet avoid possible dehydration, sunburn and potentially painful paws and it will help you and your pet enjoy the walk more.” Details: bit.ly/2Ss9CTL

MKR future looks bright Melton has a mystical My Kitchen Rules connection. Professional psychic Anne Lamont joins the cast of MKR, the competitive television cooking show now in its 10th season, with her childhood mate Jennifer Tomkinson. The duo will compete in the second round of ‘instant restaurants’, a series of pop-up soirees hosted at the contestants’ houses, starting February 12. Ms Lamont said food holds a special place in their hearts. “Food means everything to us,” she said. “We’ve done lots of cooking together. “The story behind how I started cooking will be revealed on the show.” She said that the aim was to cook with “passion and love”. Ms Lamont said she hopes to win over the judges, Pete Evans and Manu Feildel, with a ratatouille omelette while Ms Tomkinson fires up the crowds with a spiced roasted cauliflower.

Ms Tomkinson said the pair are always getting into “crazy, crazy things”. “We met 38 years ago when my family moved next door to Anne’s,” she said. “We hit it off straight away. “Other teams are going to think we’re just blonde, bimbo bogans but we’ll show them. “We’ve never grown up and we’re never going to grow up,” Ms Tomkinson said. “I’m always planning the next thing and Anne’s very visual and spontaneous. But I know that with Anne in my corner we can achieve anything together.” The team’s dream is to own a country pub “pulling beers and serving home-cooked meals” she said. Ducted heating, split-system and security doors are part of the deal. An integrated alfresco area looks out to side and back yards, both with a mix of lawn, pebbled areas and mulched garden beds. The remote-controlled double garage has internal access via the entry hall.

Between Hannah Watts Park and Melton Botanic Gardens, and a quick zip from Western Freeway entry, this charming unit is leased at $300 a week until April. It has three grey-carpeted and fitted bedrooms and a fresh main bathroom. The tiled living area, with downlights, incorporates the kitchen with classic black stone benches and white cabinetry, plus underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, split-system, window coverings, security doors and NBN connection are included. The property has a covered alfresco area, a wedge of lawn, vegie boxes, garden shed and remote-controlled garage with internal access.

Barry Plant Melton: 9746 6000 Price: $630,000 – $680,000 Private sale A great example of a “forever family home”, this double-storey cracker, perched on about 750 square metres in popular Westlake estate, will have plenty of admirers. The house has spread-out space galore and the gardens are chock full of simple charm. The kitchen, with wide servery to the meals area, has plenty of white cupboards and a corner pantry, as well as stainless-steel dishwasher, 900mm gas cooktop and a wall oven. The laundry and a powder room, off the entry hall, precede the sliding door to the kitchen.

A carpeted stairway leads to a study area, around which are the four fitted bedrooms and main bathroom. The main bedroom, with fanlight window and two others offering views across the treetops, has a retreat space, walk-in robe and en suite. Ducted heating and evaporative cooling are on board. 22 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 5, 2019

SPORT Melton heads into new season as firm favourite Melton finds itself in an unusual place heading into this year’s Ballarat Football League season. After last season making finals for the first time in 11 years, and a grand final for the first time since 2005, the Bloods will enter 2019 as one of the favourites, not as a challenger. Bloods second year coach Aaron Tymms said he was pleased with how the playing group had returned. “I was a little bit worried,” he said. “But it’s been player driven during the pre-season so far which is really good. “Most have come back and have been pretty good about it. “There’s a bit of expectation on us this year and it’ll be interesting to see how they respond.

“We have to make sure we’re putting our best foot forward, as it looks like the whole competition has got better.” It has been a quite time on the recruiting front for the Bloods, with the club backing the group in. Only Brock McGregor, who has moved to Moama for work, has left from last year’s grand final team. Tymms said they had spoken about McGregor commuting each week, but that didn’t work out. “It’s been pretty quiet, as you’re usually out there recruiting, but we’ve been able to retain most of the guys. “Part of the deal of me coaching again, I

would only do it if most of the group signed up.” The Bloods have added a bit more experience to the group as they plan to take the next step. Shaun Campbell, Anthony Hibbert, Dyson Stevens and Tom Robinson have joined the club. Tymms said Campbell and Stevens were great catches. Campbell was most recently coaching the Wagga Tigers and claimed the Central Highlands Football League best and fairest award in his one year with Ballan in 2015. Stevens, who was aligned with the Bloods in 2016-17 while playing VFL with the Northern Blues, comes to the Bloods from Deer Park.

Lions bowlers dig deep By Tara Murray Melton has fought back late with the ball against Yarraville to have their match evenly poised after day one. With the two teams sixth and seventh, with only percentage separating them, on the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west ladder, getting the six points is vital to both. Yarraville won the toss and elected to bat in warm conditions at MacPherson Park. The decision looked like the right one early on with the Eagles cruising at 3-138. But the Lions rallied late to restrict the Eagles to 8-213. Lions coach Nathan Giesler said they were happy with that total. “At one stage it looked like they were heading towards 250,” he said. “We fought back after tea. We still have to get 213. I’m pretty happy with where the game is situated.” With the wicket not favouring faster bowlers such as Brad Jones and Ash Sweet, others did the damage with the ball. Giesler said it was good to see a couple of the younger players make the most of the conditions that suited their bowling. “It was better with the pace off the ball and Dylan [Clarke] and Adrian [Monitto] bowled really well,” Giesler said. “Being a hot day, the medium paces didn’t bowl in long spells, either. “The boys held their chances in the field to back them up, as well.” Clarke finished with 4-39 and Monitto 2-42. The challenge is now ahead of the Lions, as batting is the area they have struggled with this season. The Lions have passed 200 twice for the season, with one of those in a loss. Giesler said the players knew what was required. A loss could see the Lions slip to as low as 11th, with several teams fighting for the last finals spot. “We have a week to prepare, to think about it,” Giesler said. “ We need to get back to basics. “It’s about having a mindset of batting time and not worrying about the scoreboard. “The longer we’re out there, the better. It’s the basic stuff that is sometimes forgotten about. “If we bat our overs, we should get it done.” Melton’s second XI made 7-267 against Yarraville, Jeeta Singh top-scoring with 67. The Lions are in eighth place and a game outside the top six. Meanwhile, Melton JG Craig Shield cricketer Josh Oldfield has been selected as part of the west team to play other regions. Oldfield, who plays his local cricket for Eynesbury Eagles, had an impact for Melton with both the bat and ball during Melton’s JG Craig Shield campaign.

“Shaun and Dyson are big for us, especially Shaun,” he said. “He’s coached before as well and hopefully that will help.” The Bloods headed away on a training camp at the weekend and will play three practice matches against Buninyong, Ocean Grove and Strathmore before the season gets under way. It’s a big year for the Bloods as the club celebrates its 140th anniversary. The club will also field a women’s side for the first time. The Bloods kick off their season on April 13 against arch rival Melton South. Tara Murray

Titans far from beaten despite a losing record North Western Titans have delivered their best performance of the Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3 women’s competition. They may be sitting on the bottom of the ladder in their first season, but the Titans continue to improve each week. On Saturday, they lost to Springvale Lions Blue 18-5. Titans coach Jeff Ostler said while they were never in the game, they had performed well. “It was the best game that they’ve played,” he said. “Springvale is one of the best clubs across all grades. It was always going to be a tough day.” Ostler said Kim Borg and Karina Colquhoun were the standouts for the Titans – as they had been all season. He said they were a cut above the rest of the side. Ostler said it was good to see the playing group continue to gain ground each week. “They haven’t dropped off and we’ve had players on the park each week, which is a credit to them,” he said. “Everyone has improved, which is showing they’re learning at training. “It’s about making sure we’re working on the basics and getting that right.” The Titans have two matches left in their season and are hoping to break through for that first win. But Ostler said that while a win would be nice, it was only a small part of the focus. “It should be good and hopefully we will give it our all,” he said. “For us, it’s about continuing for next year and developing the program. “We’ve got a couple of junior girls coming through who will step up next season and will be handy pick-ups.” On Sunday, the men’s side had an 18-12 loss to Chelsea Dolphins. The Titans sit fifth with three losses for the season. This week they will face Pakenham Pumas. The club hosted a past player day on Sunday. Ostler said the day involved players from across the Melton baseball community, including the Melton Mustangs, coming down and remembering old times. He said there was about 100 people in attendance, with the men’s teams playing as the event took place.

Dylan Clarke was strong with the ball for Melton on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)

Tara Murray 23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 5, 2019

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Age is no barrier to mastering her sport Alice Masters may have been a late starter to rugby union, but it hasn’t stopped her from having an impact in the sport. At 34, Masters has been named in the Melbourne Rebels Women’s side for the Super W competition for a second successive year. Masters had no interest in the sport until a friend invited her to a training session about seven years ago. “Western Districts, which is affiliated with Brimbank, Melton and Footscray clubs, started a team for women,” she said. “When they started training, one of the girls mentioned it to me and I went down and had a look. “I didn’t know much about it and it was the first time I had considered it. “I found rugby union a pretty good fit for me and really enjoyed it.” It was a tough first season for the Rebels, who didn’t win a game in the national competition. Masters said it was a good experience which the side hoped to build on this year.

The competition starts on March 11 and the season runs for five weeks before finals. Masters plays in the front row, usually as a prop. “It’s exciting to have the opportunity again,” she said. “I’m a bit older than a lot of the other girls. It was a good experience to play at that level. “We didn’t win a game, but improved every match, which is more important. “We want to keep on improving and continuing to learn. Hopefully we’ll have some massive improvements and maybe have some success.” If Masters’ weekends weren’t busy enough, she also plays Australian Rules football for Melton Centrals. With the sports generally played on different days, she said she could play both of them. She said she appreciated the differences in the two sports. “Rugby is different and a lot more strategic than AFL,” she said.

“Every person is matched to a certain position. “Sometimes the contact is a bit heavier. “I play rugby on Saturday and football on Sunday. “Usually I pull up a bit sore, but a bit of recovery like ice baths and taking the dog for a walk helps.” Masters said she planned to play both sports for as long as she could. She said there were now a lot more opportunities for women. “I’ve already represented Victoria at the masters for AFL and now they have a competition for players that are 30 plus. “In rugby they have an annual masters competition. Hopefully we might see a competition in Melbourne in the future.” Tara Murray Alice Masters is part of the Melbourne Rebels squad for a second year. (Dennis Manktelow)

A grand finale for Lions By Tara Murray The dream has become reality for the Bacchus Marsh Lions – they have won through to the Country Basketball League south-west grand final in their first year. The Lions have exceeded all expectations by winning two finals and grabbing a place in the final game of the season. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben said there was a really good feel among the playing group on Saturday night following their semi-final win over Horsham Hornets. There were celebrations – instead of the commiseration drinks that had been anticipated. “It was a good drive back,” Feben said. “It’s beyond what we expected when we decided on a cold winter’s night to do this.” Facing the minor premier, the Lions led for most of the night. After gaining the lead in the first quarter, the Lions stayed in front to secure a 77-69 win. Feben said his side would get out to a half-decent lead before the Hornets would bring it back to a couple of buckets. He said he was proud his side responded when challenged. “It was a quality game, against quality opposition,” he said. “It was nice to stand there and coach. “We worked pretty hard as a team. The starters got us ticking along with the scoring and there was some great defensive efforts. “The highest margin was about 10 points, but we were never able to get away.” Still, he described the win as “our best team performance”. Feben said the Lions had players stand up all across the court. Jordan Kirk shut down the Hornets’ Tim Pickert after half-time. After scoring 19 points in the first half, Pickert scored just three in the second. “Kirky shut him down,” Feben said. “His sole focus was on trying to stop him getting the ball and he did a really good job. I think Kirky was a little bit disappointed with his scoring, but that wasn’t what we needed him to do.” The Lions’ leading scorer, Billy Feben, grabbed 25 points, while Diquan Williams scored 20. Williams was also big on the defensive end, with some key plays late in the game. Jeff Feben said the likes of Jason Christian, Jake Raynor, Max Beaumont and Joshua Borninkhof all had key moments. The Lions will play Mt Gambier Lakers in the grand final on Saturday night in Colac. The Lakers won through to the grand final with a 95-64 win against the Bellarine Storm. 113-77. Jeff Feben said the Lions were hoping a big Bacchus Marsh crowd would make the trek to Colac. “Mt Gambier is a huge challenge,” he said. “They’ve got great depth and shooting capacity. You have to stop all 10 players.

“If we play the strong defence we did this game, we can give them for a run for their money. “They have all the expectation on them and they are expected to win. “We’ve got nothing to lose. Anything can happen in finals.”

Cool heads win the day By Tara Murray Caroline Springs got a vital win as it aims to finish top four in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Charles Clark Shield division 4. Sitting sixth heading into the weekend’s match, the Falcons moved into the top four after beating Wyndham Vale. Batting first, the Falcons made 2-210. Falcons skipper Kane Sevior said they took a while to find their pace. “We started pretty slowly before Braiden Gale and Gayashan Weerasekara put on a big partnership,” he said. “I thought that we would lose a few wickets in the run home as we chased runs, but they batted through.” Gale finished 69 not out, after being on eight after the first 20 overs. Weerasekara scored his first century of the season, finishing 101 not out. Sevior said he showed some of the form that won him the division’s best player award last season. “He’s not quite batting as well as he did last season, he’s been finding ways of getting out,” Sevior said. “He showed some of that form. It didn’t look like he would get the century, needing 20 off the last three overs. “He made it in the last over.” The Falcons then turned it on with the ball, bowling Wyndham Vale out for 119. Sevior said it was a couple of the younger bowlers who set the tone. “Lucas [Blackman] and Braedon [Mulheran] played really well and set it up with early wickets.” Blackman finished with 3-28 and Mulheran, Mujtaba Hussain and Weerasekara took two wickets each. The Falcons now sit in fourth, percentage ahead of fifth-placed East Coburg. Sevior said finals were the clear aim, not just for the top side but all five men’s sides. “The aim is for all sides to make it through to the finals and hopefully have at least one of us push for the flag this year.” Another side with finals’ ambitions is Sydenham-Hillside. The Storm sit third just ahead of Caroline Springs. On Saturday the Storm defeated East Coburg, making 4-141 in reply to East Coburg’s 140. In division 5, Melton South Royals moved into the top four with a big win against Bellbridge. Bellbridge made 99. Matthew O’Brien took three wickets to be the pick of the bowlers for the Royals. O’Brien then top-scored with 30 as the Royals made 2-102. Second-placed Melton Centrals easily beat Williamstown Colts. Centrals made 8-137 from their overs, before bowling Colts out for 78.

Bacchus Marsh, The Avenue in early merger talks Bacchus Marsh Bowling Club is considering a merger with local club The Avenue. Club president Phil Minniti said discussions with The Avenue, also based in Bacchus Marsh, were still in the early stages. “It may happen, it may not,” he said. “We’re being honest and telling people we’re talking about it, but no firm decisions or timelines have been set.” The Avenue currently plays in the Ballarat District Bowls Division. The discussions come as Bacchus Marsh looks to shore up a finals spot in Central Highlands Bowls top division. Bacchus Marsh is in second with three rounds remaining, and five sides fighting for four spots. With matches against three of the other top-five sides to round out the regular season, Bacchus Marsh has the toughest run home. Minniti said it was good for the competition to be so close. “There’s been some very close games and some great results,” he said.

“Everything hinges on one or two results and whether you finish first or fifth. “You would prefer to have close games, as it makes for better results.” Minniti said finishing top two and getting the double chance was vital this season. He said it was one season where the team that finished fourth could quite easily claim the title. On Saturday, Bacchus Marsh held on to second place with a big win against Romsey. Bacchus Marsh claimed three rinks, winning 109 (16)-78 (2). Simon Cornock, Lee Greening and Glenn Arthur were the winning skips for Bacchus Marsh. Minniti said he thought the side had under-performed to this stage of the season. “We’re great mates and we’ve got some great talent this season,” he said. “[But] It’s taken a little longer to gel than we would have liked. “Teams are now starting to be selected in the right order and we’re starting to hit our straps.” Minniti said all three sides are in the finals mix.

He said numbers across the board were excellent and they often had too many players some weeks to fill spots. In other results, Gisborne Red remains a point ahead of Bacchus Marsh, courtesy of a big win against club mates Gisborne Yellow. Gisborne Red won 96 (16)-73 (2). Lancefield leapfrogged Kyneton Golf into the top four, with a 106 (16)-74 (2) win. Kyneton claimed all points on offer in its 147 (18)-46 (0) smashing of Trentham. Macedon Ranges, Kyneton Blue, Woodend and Kyneton Red all won in division 2, while Gisborne, Lancefield, Macedon Ranges, Bacchus Marsh and Trentham were the winners in division 3. Tara Murray
