Dance duo steps it up Emmasyn and Sienna are on a high after their national championship win. The Melton duo, both 11, returned with gold in the jazz and contemporary sections of the Showcase Australia Dance Championships on the Gold Coast last month. The competition attracts dancers and troupes from all over Australia and New Zealand vying for a national title in jazz, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, ballet, acrobatics and musical theatre. Emmasyn, from Hoppers Crossing, and Melton’s Sienna have been dancing since they were three and teamed up this year for their first performances as a duo. The girls, who dance with Galactic Dance and Events in Melton, came away with the overall duo/trio highest score for the Australasian competition. Emmasyn’s mother Ainsley Foust said she was “exceptionally proud” of the girls. “I’m blown away with how well they did,” Ms Foust said. “It’s their first time performing as a duo and they spent their holidays practising. “Individually they both ranked in the top-20 in Australasia in their age group. “They were also a part of a team of 30 other local Melton students who competed with troupes coming away with amazing results.” SIENNA AND EMMASYN

Pokies about-face fails By Esther Lauaki An attempt to overturn Melton council’s decision to extend Essendon Football Club’s 29-year lease of Melton Country Club has failed. The council voted unanimously in December for Essendon’s continued operation of Melton Country Club and its 89 poker machines until the end of 2047. But councillor Steve Abboushi put forward a rescission motion following that meeting, in a bid to enable more community voices. His motion was voted down at last Monday’s meeting, the first of the year.
“You can only try your best to minimise any harm to the community,” Cr Aboushi told Star Weekly last week. “I didn’t have the majority in the end, which is a bit disappointing.” Cr Aboushi and three other councillors supported the motion. According to the Alliance for Gambling Reform, Melton suffered $27.7 million in AFL club-sponsored pokies losses across three venues in 2017 and 2018. Hawthorn has associations with WestWaters Hotel in Caroline Springs. Collingwood was associated with The Club, also in Caroline Springs, but last year announced it was ALL NEW
divesting itself of poker machines across the west. Alliance director Tim Costello last year urged councillors to refuse to extend Essendon’s lease. “If the Melton councillors are brave and reject the officer recommendation to stay in the gambling business, it will have a powerful motivating impact on the reform movement,” Mr Costello said. Melton Country Club is home to Melton RSL. RSL secretary Kevin Murray, has said a loss of the club’s ongoing sponsorship, facilities and hospitality would be “detrimental to the Melton RSL”.
“The Melton RSL sub-branch is a relatively new, relatively small, sub-branch,” Mr Murray said last week. “Until our entry into an agreement with the Melton Country Club, we were not able to offer our members access to the usual facilities expected of an RSL sub-branch … a dining room, bar, function rooms and, in some instances, gaming rooms. The country club is now regarded as our home.” Mr Murray said the Melton Country Club provided financial and practical support to the RSL and the broader community. “The investment in us by the club is the single largest donation we receive each year,” he said.

Slippery issue for snake season Moorabool snake catchers say there has been a spike in snakes captured around the region. Manfred Zabinskas, a catcher with 30 years experience, described it as one of his busiest years. The 58-year-old, who attends call-outs ranging from Daylesford to Creswick, said he now receives three or four calls a day when conditions are snake-friendly – and believes the snake season has got longer in recent years. Jarrod Bingham, whose area includes Bacchus Marsh, believes call-outs to the town are about double last year’s years level when he
would take about four calls a fortnight. This year, Mr Bingham estimated them at the same rate every week. Jules Farquhar, one half of a team of brothers often called to collect snakes around Ballarat, said he would normally average about 30 calls per season, but estimated this summer as about 50 or 60. “It’s a lot higher [than usual], no question of that,” Mr Farquar said. Each area has colourful tales of unexpected encounters between man and reptile. Mr Bingham reported retrieving a tiger snake from a bathroom, while Mr Zabinskas said he
recently caught a whip snake in the toddlers’ section of a public pool in central Victoria. “It was country so they were pretty laid-back about it,” Mr Zabinskas said. “They were still swimming in the pool two metres away. In Melbourne, they would have evacuated four suburbs.” The catchers partly explain the higher call-outs as the upshot of greater awareness of their service, while Mr Bingham cites development around Bacchus Marsh as a significant reason for the rise in snake encounters.
Mr Zabinskas attributed the rise in sightings and call-outs to longer-term shifts in the climate. “One of the things I have really noticed over the 30 years that I’ve been a catcher is how the snake period has actually extended,” he said. “Last year, in particular, I was still getting snake calls into May, which is just outrageous. “Even in the winter, we were getting multiple days that are up into the 20s and that’s going to reactivate snakes again.” – The Courier
Light shines on Darley Park sporting clubs
A happy learning curve for Aintree Aintree’s new independent school is open for business. The Woodlea estate campus of Bacchus Marsh Grammar started the school year with 650 students on February 4. The school also has campuses at Maddingley and Staughton Vale. The Aintree campus will offer early learning, prep to year 6, with the campus eventually operating through to year 8. Bacchus Marsh Grammar principal Andrew Neal said the school’s roll across all of its locations had increased by 1000 pupils in the
past seven years, with half of those enrolling in the past two years. Mr Neal said that the design of the Aintree campus, near Rockbank, was aimed at inspiring pupils. “The main building will be a feature … in design and innovative specialist facilities for teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” he said. “The array of landscaping and additional facilities will set a new standard for schools in the west.” As well as the Bacchus Marsh Grammar primary school campus, Woodlea’s master
plan includes another two P-6 public primary schools and a public secondary school. Woodlea project director Matthew Dean said it was important for residents to have access to high-quality education opportunities close to home. “Bacchus Marsh Grammar has a strong reputation for being a high-achieving school and as they already have strong ties within the local area, it was a natural fit to have a Woodlea campus,” he said. Footballers will not have to play in “dwindling light” at Darley Park again thanks to a federal grant towards its upgrade. Darley Football Netball Club administrator Ray Newton said users were thrilled with a $150,000 boost to upgrade lighting around the oval. “We are delighted to have had a lot of our club volunteers’ hard work finally rewarded with funding for the very much-needed lighting upgrade,” Mr Newton said. The club and other park tenants will split the balance of the $300,000 project with Moorabool council. “The project works have just gone out to tender and it is hopeful that this will occur over the course of this year,” Mr Newton said. “Significant modifications to the power supply delivery at Darley Park must be undertaken first.” Ballarat MP Catherine King said the announcement would “make a real difference to this community club”. “This lighting upgrade will bring Darley Park up to the standard of facilities shared by many other sporting grounds across the Ballarat electorate,” Ms King said. “No more will juniors and seniors have to train in dwindling light, and it will open up new possibilities as the three tenant clubs continue to grow. “I am sure Darley Football Netball Club, Darley Junior Football Netball Club and Darley Cricket Club will make the most of their updated facilities,”

Kicking on for cancer Melton and Ballarat will clash on the footy oval and netball court for charity. Two masters superules football teams and a netball squad from each club will face off next month in exhibition matches to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The annual Cancer Cup, to be held on March 31, is now in its fifth year and is won on aggregate points scored in the over 45s and over 35s football games as well as an open netball game. Melton Panthers club treasurer Gareth Ryan said the event aims to raise as much as possible for the Cancer Council. “You’re looking at old blokes who just want a game,” Mr Ryan said. “You might see a couple of heavy hits – if
they can catch each other – but it will be a fun and family-friendly atmosphere. “It’s a good way to raise some money for a good cause. “Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way and this is a great way to raise awareness and funds towards the work that the Cancer Council does.” The netball match will involved women and girls from all age groups. The over 45s game is scheduled for 11.30am with netball to follow and the 35s take to the oval at 2.30pm. At Melton Masters Football Club at Melton Recreation Reserve. Esther Lauaki

Good sports dig deep for family By Esther Lauaki Michael Wright has never been too far from the action – whether it’s an emergency or on the football field. The Kurunjang father has been a volunteer firefighter of more than two decades and has coached football at Burnside Heights and Caroline Springs clubs. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016. He got through the first stage, but it returned last year. The sports community has rallied around the family, including wife Julie and kids Lauchlan and Kaitlyn. Family friend and Burnside Heights member Justin Peagram said a benefit dinner to support the family had been organised. An online crowdfunding page has already raised about $1600. “It has been hard on the family,” Mr Peagram told Star Weekly. “While things play out, they are suffering financially. “Currently, Julie is unable to work and Michael has been hospitalised since the start of the year. “He was home for Christmas, but unfortunately he needs around-the-clock care. “Michael has been with us for about four years as a junior coach and prior to that he was with Caroline Springs.” Lauchlan plays under-19s football and Kaitlyn plays netball for Burnside Heights. “It’s a very sad situation but we’re grateful to see the community rally behind this family,” Mr Peagram said. The Burnside Heights Football Club will host the fundraising dinner next Tuesday, February 19, at Gamekeepers Inn. Donate and book tickets: bit.ly/2SfmfWA

Swan turf war exacts ‘sad’ toll By Esther Lauaki
Ballan rallies to classic culture
(Dennis Manktelow)
A turf war between two Lake Caroline swan families is putting their cygnets’ lives at risk and distressing residents. Members of a Caroline Springs Facebook page have discussed the plight of a swan family of five spotted on the nature strips of nearby houses. “We have a sad situation around Lake Caroline,” a resident wrote. “The beautiful swan family often seen on the Esplanade, Swan Street and Boathouse Drive has been living on the nature strips of the houses after being forced out of the lake under a territorial fight with another swan family defending all or part of a pond and lake edge. “Sadly … one of the cygnets was hit and killed by a car and lately there has only been one swan with the group. “There are foxes, cats and dogs around at night … and the swans are being fed by residents all types of food that aren’t suitable.” RSPCA Victoria animal welfare policy manager Mhairi Roberts urged residents to steer clear. “We do not recommend residents attempt to relocate the swans as this may disrupt resting, mating or feeding,” she said. “As swans are territorial, it can also be dangerous if they are relocated to an unsuitable area. We recommend contacting the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning for advice on management of displaced animals.” Ms Roberts warned residents not to feed the birds with bread. “Although bread is commonly given to swans, it has little nutritional value and can even be harmful,” she said. “Feeding wild animals can also result in a dependence on humans.”
Fans of old and interesting machines and tools are gearing up for this weekend’s Ballan Great Vintage Rally and Tractor Pull. The rally will be held on Sunday at Ballan racecourse. It has been running for more than 15 years and attracts up to 2000 visitors. Ballan District Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Club treasurer Ray Meadows said the rally would feature vintage cars, sheep shearing, stationary engine exhibits, model trains, handcrafts and entertainment. “I grew up on the farm and I’ve loved tractors and machinery since I was young,” he said. “I started collecting from there and have 12 tractors now.” He said vintage enthusiasts would be treated to classic cars, tractors, motorbikes and vehicles of all descriptions. Other highlights will include Ronaldson Tippett engines, flying displays, handcrafts and power boats. Tickets: Adults $10, family $20 and children under-14 free. From 9am-4pm RAY MEADOWS

Campaign to fix Hogan Road By Esther Lauaki Hogan Road is being described as one of “the worst roads in Ballan” – and one resident is determined to get it fixed. Tahlia Conroy said she negotiates potholes and “loose dirt and gravel” along the kilometre stretch of road daily. “As the town grows, the traffic grows with it,” Ms Conroy said. “The developments surrounding this road
‘‘
The road consists of multiple deep and wide - Tahlia Conroy potholes
’’
mean increased traffic conditions which has contributed to the dangerous condition of the road – especially in the winter months.” She said the road was only wide enough to fit one car at a time and it was “unacceptable”.
“The road consists of multiple, deep and wide potholes. “Where any car is required to move to the side to allow the passing of another car you need to dramatically reduce speed to avoid hitting a pothole or a gutter … If you are required to give way, you must veer onto loose dirt and gravel to do so. “Residents should not feel the need to avoid this road based on fear they may cause damage to their vehicles.”
Ms Conroy has launched a petition calling for Moorabool council to advocate for upgrades. “All efforts to patch up a pothole with loose gravel are quickly ruined once the rain hits,” she said. A council spokesperson encouraged residents to raise their concerns with their ward councillor or bring a petition to council to be considered at its March 6 meeting in Ballan. VicRoads was contacted for comment. View the petition: bit.ly/2DYbTlc
A west-sider steps up Christian Ambesi has worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Robbie Williams – and soon he’ll be notching up another career highlight to beat those experiences. The Caroline Springs 17-year-old is rehearsing for the new production of West Side Story after landing the key role of Baby John in the blockbuster production, which will run at Melbourne Arts Centre. Ambesi said it was a dream come true to be part of something so big. “I was really overwhelmed when I heard I’d landed the part,” he said. “It was so unexpected … I’m so young, I just went into the audition process with nothing to lose. “There were lots of tears from family when we found out – it’s definitely the highlight of my career so far.” Ambesi has been working towards this moment for some time, after taking up dancing when he was four and continuing to follow his dreams regardless of the obstacles. “The feeling … when I danced is what
inspired me to pursue it … even from a young age I knew that dancing made me happy,” he said. “It was a bit of an escape for me. Through primary school, I had some troubles, and the start of high school wasn’t great. Being a male dancer doing ballet and jazz was looked down on by some kids at school. But I always turned back to it because I could see where I wanted to be.” Ambesi’s career took an upward turn at age 11 when he was involved in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies and then, a few years later, he worked with UK superstar Robbie Williams on his 2014 tour. “Performing on Broadway has been my dream for as long as I can remember, so this is a bit of a stepping stone. It’s a 10-month tour and I’m really looking forward to it.” West Side Story will be at Melbourne Arts Centre from April 6-28. Tickets: westsidestory. com.au Ewen McRae

Youth awards and grants
Mayor’s Message
Cr Bob Turner Eynesbury residents will be pleased to hear that Council will mark the commencement of works on the Eynesbury Recreation Reserve, at an official turning of the sod ceremony this Friday, 15 February. This long-awaited, $9.4 million project will include construction of a senior cricket/AFL oval, two caged cricket nets, two netball/basketball courts, four fenced tennis courts, two fenced multi-purpose courts, an adventure playspace; a pavilion with social room, kitchen, four change rooms, umpires’ room, first aid and storage rooms. Young Communities Grants Melton City Council Youth Services are keen to support the goals of young people, aged 12-25, within the city through the annual City of Melton Young Communities Grants Program.
If creative pursuits are more to your liking, then come along to the Four Treasures exhibition running at CS Gallery and Melton Library and Learning Hub until 13 March. Created and curated by members of the
Individual Grants
Melton Chinese Friendship Association, the Four Treasures exhibition—which refers to the ink brush, inkstick, rice paper and inkstone used to create these revered artforms—features traditional ink painting and calligraphy techniques used since the Han Dynasty, around 200BC. At first glance, these works may appear to be simple, but in fact take many hours of practice to perfect; so this exhibition really highlights the skills and patience of the talented contributing artists. We’re also pleased to be running free workshops by artists, Mr Chen and Mr Huang, for anyone interested in trying their hand this centuries-old Chinese art form. For more information, visit melton.vic.gov.au/exhibitions To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au
Grants are available for individuals up to $500 in the following categories: Arts & Culture, Sports, and Education & Career Pathway. Applications are open until Friday 8 March 2019.

Project Grants
Cr Ken Hardy
Grants are available for community groups/organisations/schools up to $5000 for projects addressing the issues faced by young people. Applications are open until Friday 8 March 2019. City of Melton Youth Awards We are also keen to recognise the positive contribution that young people make to our community. We will be presenting awards to young people to recognise their special achievements through the City of Melton 2019 Youth Awards. The categories are: • Being connected
Without doubt, the biggest and the most transformative project Council has undertaken over the last 12 months, has been the Build Melton Hospital campaign. This high-level, strategic initiative received major network news coverage and collected over 21,000 signatures that supported the construction of the new 24 hour, public hospital in Cobblebank.
• Being heard • Being inclusive • Being all you can be • Being happy and healthy Entry criteria: • Nominees must be aged 12 to 25 years, and must live, work or attend school in the City of Melton. • Nominators must NOT be related to the person they are nominating. • Nominees can be entered in more than one category. • Nominees must agree to the nomination and attend the ceremony. Nominations are open until Friday 8 March 2019. For more information on Youth Grants and Awards, contact Youth Services on 9747 5373 or email: yac@melton.vic.gov.au
The economic benefits of this type of massive investment will equate to hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars for our local economy. Economic modelling projects that an average of 550 people would be directly employed each year during a four year construction phase; with multiplier effects generating an additional 1,600 jobs. That’s a total of 2,100 jobs each year, and economic benefit of $772

million dollars to Melton’s local economy, each year for the life of the project. If we estimate around 3,000 ongoing jobs will be required to operate and support this type of facility, the flow on effect created equates to an additional 2,179 jobs; a total 5,179 ongoing roles in just operating the new hospital. The economic benefit this generates equates to $1 billion annually to Melton’s local economy. It’s clear to see, even with this quick economic snapshot, that the importance of building a 24 hour public hospital in our City is paramount, and Council will continue to advocate on behalf of our residents to ensure that this ambitious, yet vital, project becomes a reality. The grey carpet in here is new and of the SmartStrand variety, known for its stain and water resistance. The same carpet is laid in the four fitted bedrooms, each with roman blinds. The large main bedroom, with stylish pendants each side of the bed, has a walk-in robe and en suite. Other bedrooms are down a hallway, with a door providing separation from busy living areas. They share the hallway with main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry.
Behind double doors from the foyer, there’s a floorboarded study which would also make a great playroom or TV snug for the kids. Floorboards are also in the family sitting area, while the meals zone and kitchen are tiled for practicality. Plenty of cupboards in pale timber-look and a corner pantry, plus a wall oven, 900mm gas cooktop and dishwasher bearing the prized Westinghouse label fit out the cooks’ domain.

Big batting a hit with Centrals By Tara Murray Melton Centrals had a weekend to remember with the bat. Centrals dominated in two Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield matches. On day one of a two-day match against Aberfeldie Park, Centrals made a massive 4-399 from their overs. Centrals captain-coach Adam Hulett was a happy man. “Saying that the No.7 didn’t get a bat in an 80-over game and we only lost four wickets for 399 – I wouldn’t have believed that,” he said. “It’s a credit to the top order for looking after the wickets then scoring runs.” Waduwidanalage Rangika and Connor Poulton both scored centuries, with Steven Robertson scoring 87. Hulett said while they had the runs on the board, they weren’t focusing on anything other than getting a first innings win against the top side. A win will move Centrals to the top of the table. “Aberfeldie is a quality batting side and fingers crossed we get the job done,” Hulett said. “The top five is really close … we’re not getting complacent.” Centrals’ good form with the bat continued on Sunday in a one-dayer against Melton South Royals. Centrals made 8-236 at nearly a run a ball. Hulett said they put the pressure on right from the start. “Waduwidanalage Rangika made 128 yesterday and 74 today,” he said. “Steve Robertston made 50-60-odd after making 87 the day before. The runs were again coming at the top of the order, giving the

middle and lower order the chance to just go for it.” Rangika continued his good weekend by taking 4-25 as Centrals bowled the Royals out for 152. The win keeps Centrals in second spot with a game and half remaining. “Wins at this stage of the season help set the side up for the business end,” Hulett said. “As a team, we’re playing really well.”
It was a tough weekend for the Royals with no play taking place in their two-day match against Jacana on Saturday. The game will be a one-dayer next week. In division 4, Caroline Springs made 181 against Moonee Valley on day one of their two-day match. The Falcons got off to the perfect start with the ball, having Moonee Valley 2-3 at stumps.
On Sunday, the Falcons defeated Grand United. After making 9-152, the Falcons bowled Grand United out for 82. Sydenham-Hillside didn’t get on the pitch on Saturday against Grand United because of rain. On Sunday, the Storm lost to Maribyrnong Park St Marys. Maribyrnong made 6-133 in reply to the Storm’s 132.

SPORT Darley clings to finals hopes as outright bid falls flat Darley’s slim finals hopes remain alive in the Ballarat Cricket Association after a big win against Brown Hill on Saturday. After losing their first five matches, the Lions have been fighting to move up the ladder. They claimed first-innings points on day one by dismissing Brown Hill for 82, declaring at 1-86 and heading into day two with a lead of four. On Saturday, their hopes of an outright win, to help close that gap on the top four, were dashed. The Lions got off to the perfect start with the ball, having Brown Hill in trouble at 4-45. The good news stopped there for the Lions, with Brown Hill batting through to finish 4-132.
Lions captain-coach Michael Alexander said it was disappointing not to claim the full 10 points, but he knew it was going to be difficult. He said Brown Hill had lost its previous game outright, so its players would have been desperate to avoid another. “We ended up a fair bit away from it in the end,” he said “The wicket did flatten out a bit and we didn’t get there at the end. We gave ourselves every opportunity and the bowlers bowled well to get the result on day one.” Nine bowlers rolled their arms over for the Lions, with Ben Longhurst, Richard Moore, Bradley Barnes and Hasitha Wickramasinghe taking the wickets. The Lions are in seventh spot, 16 points behind North Ballarat.
With only two matches left, the maximum amount of points available to Darley is 20 points. That means the Lions need at least one outright win, maybe two, and other results to go their way. Alexander said North Ballarat’s outright win the previous round had really hurt their chances. He said that after their poor start to the season, they had let slip other chances to move up the ladder. “We’re relying on other results,” he said. “We dropped our first five games and we did the majority of that without the imports. “When we had them, we had opportunities against Golden Point and Buninyong and we let ourselves down.
“We’ve played some really good cricket and some poor stuff. Eighty per cent in games has been good, but the 20 per cent has cost us, especially in the one-dayers.” The Lions will this week face ladder leader Mt Clear. Alexander said they would continue to make sure their focus was on the game at hand, not the ladder position. “We can only control what we can control,” he said. “We want to finish with two wins and see what happens.” North Ballarat, Mt Clear, Golden Point and East Ballarat were the other winners on Saturday. Panthers have hopes for VFL star’s services

Lions batting falls short By Tara Murray Melton’s finals hopes have taken a dive with yet another loss in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west. The Lions, without a win this year, were hoping to end their drought against Yarraville on Saturday. While batting has been the Lions’ Achilles heel this season, they were confident of getting the 214 needed. But once more the Lions failed to bat out their overs, with just three players reaching double figures as the side was bowled out for 179. Playing coach Nathan Geisler said that while the Lions’ batting performance was better than those of recent weeks, it still wasn’t good enough. “With about 20 to 25 overs to go we were in the game, but the batters weren’t there,” he said. “We needed the batters to be out there 24 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 12, 2019
for longer. We didn’t apply ourselves. To their credit, they bowled well.” Geisler, who was second top scorer with 37, said the scorecard showed once again that the task was left to too few. Opener Ben MacRae top-scored with 64. Geisler said MacRae had been a bright light with the bat across the season. “He has been fantastic in the later part of the season,” he said. “He hadn’t been putting the score on the board at the start of the season, but he was still putting starts on the board. “He has started to capitalise and been a rock in the innings. “Nathan Taylor played well before Christmas, but no one else is really putting up their hand.” The loss leaves the Lions sitting ninth, six points outside the top six with two rounds remaining. While finals remain the target, Geisler said
they would be stripping their approach back even further. The Lions will this week face Altona, which is coming off its third win of the season. “We haven’t won a game since Christmas,” Geisler said. “We just want to win this round. Our focus is on next Saturday and batting or bowling well and, hopefully, set ourselves up for the following week. “We’ll then look at results after that match and work out where we sit. “We haven’t written off our season, but it’s definitely out of our hands.” Geisler said they were simply focusing on the tasks at hand. “It’s still an even competition and anyone can beat anyone,” he said. The Lions’ second XI will likely have to win its two remaining matches to play finals. The fourth XI will play finals, but the third XI will miss the top six.
Melton South is hoping to play VFL star forward Jordan Lisle in a handful of Ballarat Football League games in the coming season. Lisle, who is still playing with Port Melbourne in the VFL, has nominated Melton South as his home club this season. Panthers coach Heath Pritchard is hoping Lisle will play with them when he doesn’t have VFL commitments. Pritchard said there would be four occasions on which Port Melbourne had byes and the Panthers were playing. “He’s still playing at Port,” he said. “I’ve had a relationship with Jordie for a long period of time, having been at Port Melbourne. “We’ll be a home club for him and, hopefully, he will play full-time for us once his time in the VFL finishes.” He said this season would provide him “a good look at the club”. Lisle, who played 23 AFL games for the Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn, has been a VFL standout in recent years. He has twice won the Frosty Miller Medal as the VFL’s leading goalkicker. Lisle captained Port Melbourne last year. Pritchard said Lisle had indicated that he thought he was approaching the end of his VFL career. “He is a good player and a good guy,” Pritchard said. “He ticks a lot of boxes of the players we’re after and is a proven performer. He still has a lot to offer. “Hopefully, he’ll get a few games in for us and provide a target up forward.” Pritchard said Lisle might not be the only VFL-listed player aligned with Melton South this season. The Panthers announced last year that former Carlton player Paul Bower had joined the club. Tara Murray

Diggers Rest all revved up for next season’s challenge Diggers Rest isn’t planning on a premiership hangover in the Riddell District Football League this year. After claiming their second premiership in three years, the Burras are keen to make sure they are contenders again this season. Burras coach Jamie Lobb said they were determined to not let standards slip. “The guys are more keen than they were this time last year,” he said. “We’re already spoken about how hard grand finals are to win, and that it is even harder to go back-to-back. “The boys have come back really well.” As in previous years, the Burras have had a shorter pre-season than many other sides. Lobb said it was about making sure everyone was switched on from the start.
He said most of the group had spent a lot of time together in the off season anyway. In a big boost for the club, the Burras have managed to keep most of their premiership side. Skipper Tom Gleeson has headed overseas, and Mathew Medcraft is on the move after one season. Stephen Ruane and Luke Smailes have retired along with Brent Tuckey, who didn’t play in the grand final. Lobb said one of the key areas for the club had been its depth in recent years and those player losses would give other players a chance. Like the senior side, the reserves have also won two premierships in three years. “We could have chosen 34-35 players last season to do the job and not be depleted,” Lobb said.
“We had good numbers on the track with 46 for the first session back and there wasn’t a lot of under-18s in that.” The Burras last week put in clearances for the first of its recruits, Luke and Todd Delahey. Luke is a two-time premiership player with Darley in the Ballarat Football League. He also spent time on Geelong’s VFL list in 2016-17. Todd has also been playing in the BFL, but with Bacchus Marsh. Todd played mostly in the reserves, including last year’s premiership. Lobb said they had spoken about getting the brothers across last year. “Luke wanted one more crack with Darley,” Lobb sad. “We managed to get them both across as they want to play together. I don’t think they’ve played together before.
Lions cop a hammering By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh Lions proved no match for Mt Gambier Lakers in the Country Basketball League south-west men’s grand final. Claiming a championship in their first season was always going to be a tough ask – especially as the Lions came up against a full-strength Lakers line-up. The Lakers delivered one of the performances of the season on Saturday as they overwhelmed the Lions 116-62 at Bluewater Leisure Centre in Colac. The championship is the Lakers third in four years; they finished runners-up in the other year. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben was in awe of the Lakers’ performance. “They were the leader all year and clearly the pacesetter,” he said. “Watching them, they may have been two or three levels above the other teams. “I’ve never seen a team shoot the lights out like that – they shot at 80-odd per cent “I’ve seen a lot of Big V, mostly div 1, and I think they would win a final and even challenge in the championship division.” Heading into the game, Feben said one of the Lakers’ biggest strengths was the ability to have different scorers. That proved to be the case in the decider, with six Lakers hitting double figures. For the Lions it was a tough night all round with just Diquan Williams, with 22 points, scoring double figures. Feben said the side had its grand final the previous week when it beat minor premiers Horsham Hornets. “We had to play really well to beat them and make it through,” he said. “This week, they were a cut above us. We were with them for the first few minutes and then they went on a scoring run. “Kirky [Jordan Kirk] couldn’t get easy baskets at the ring, while Bill [Feben] hit a few shots. “Diquan Williams was the standout. He had the spring and speed you need to go with a team like that.” Despite the loss, the Lions’ season has been a success, according to Jeff Feben. “I’m extremely proud,” he said. “It exceeded all our expectations and it’s a good base. It’s a good start for us.” Billy Feben was named as a joint south-west conference most valuable player. He was also named a joint defence player of the conference, with both awards voted on by the coaches. Feben averaged 21.19 points a game, the third best in the conference. He made the second most points overall and shot the most three pointers. Jeff Feben said they were surprised that Billy shared both of those awards. “It was a good little surprise,” he said. “As a father I’m proud and really happy, while as a club, to get that sort of recognition in the first season is a really good thing.”
“With the Darley and Bacchus Marsh rivalry, it wasn’t going to happen at those two clubs.” Lobb said Luke, who had been right up there in the training sessions, will likely fill the void left by Gleeson. Lobb said they were still talking to some possible recruits. He said they had room for about two more players if they found the right fit. “We’re speaking to a couple of players now,” he said. “We’ve got a good spine and a core group of players. We’re looking for the best available player. We have a strict criteria.” The Burras start their season on April 6 against Rupertswood. Tara Murray

Melton Phoenix kick off its FFA Cup campaign on Saturday in the second round of the competition. The Phoenix, who will play in FFV state league 5 west, face White Star Dandenong on Saturday in Dandenong. Phoenix’s FFV season starts on March 23 against Lara United.
Bowls
Melton had a rare win in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. In the battle of the bottom two, Melton came away with the points against Flemington-Kensington. The teams split the rinks two apiece and Melton won 91 (14)-80 (4). The win moves Melton 20 points clear of Flemington-Kensington, while it sits six points behind third last Essendon (2).
Baseball
North Western Titans fell short in a high-scoring game against Pakenham Pumas in the Baseball Victoria Summer League men’s division 3 competition. The Titans had one of their highest scores for the season, but it wasn’t enough, losing 18-10. The loss leaves the Titans sitting fifth with three wins. Meanwhile, the women’s division 3 side suffered a 28-8 loss to Moorabbin.
CHBD
Bacchus Marsh has conceded first spot in the Central Highlands Bowls Division top grade. Facing fifth-placed Kyneton Golf, Bacchus Marsh lost 94 (14)-89 (4). The result – and Gisborne Red’s big win against Kyneton 123 (18)-72 (0) – means the top two teams have switched positions. Third-placed Lancefield defeated Romsey, 105 (16)-68 (2), while Trentham had its first win of the season defeating Gisborne Yellow 117 (16)-89 (2). Just 15 points separates second to fifth.
GDCA
Bacchus Marsh remains top of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. Defending 131, the Bulls bowled Sunbury out for 98. Dennis O’Loughlin was the star with the ball, taking 5-11. Diggers Rest Bulla keeps the pressure on the top four, with a big win against Wallan. The Bullas declared at 6-263 with a lead of 133. The Magpies finished 7-172 in their second innings. In the Johnstone Shield, St Anthonys had a win and Eynesbury suffered a loss. Isuzu SUV makes big impression By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

Dealing, these days, mainly with SUVs that would run a mile rather than tackle tough terrain, it was good to get behind the wheel of a genuine off-road wagon in the shape of the Isuzu MU-X. While celebrating a decade of business in Australia, as well as noting feedback from local customers, Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) has upgraded its D-Max utility and MU-X seven-seat sports utility vehicle to maintain growth in two of the most competitive market segments – one-tonne ute and large SUV. The D-Max ute has come in for most work, with cues being taken from its MU-X SUV mate. Both come in LS-M, LS-U and LS-T variants, the ute with an SX strain added. Manual or automatic versions are on offer with two or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $42,900, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level MU-X LS-M 4x2 auto and top out at $56,200 for the LS-T 4x4 auto. The latter was on test.

All MU-Xs are fitted with six airbags (dual front, side and full-length curtain), while reversing camera and rear park assist sensors come standard.

Driving With the engine, specially designed for Australia only a couple of years ago, little has changed under the bonnet. Combined urban/highway diesel consumption is a claimed 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. On test we managed 11 litres per 100 kilometres in town and 7.0 litres on motorway cruises. Summary While it may have come late to the large SUV party, the Isuzu MU-X continues to push its more expensive rivals with the latest upgrades across the range. Isuzu’s stock-in-trade diesel power and genuine off-road ability round out the advantages.

Styling ‘Hold the chrome’ appears to be the mantra styling whizzes have worked with, the MU-X far from fleshed out with unnecessary tacky shiny bits. The frontal décor, for example, is limited to simple trapezoidal radiator surrounds with the Isuzu brand mark to the fore. The latest in hi-tech LED daytime running lights and bi-LED automatic levelling projector headlamps flank the stylish set-up, while out the back, extra-bright LED taillights help to keep the MU-X in plain sight of any other road user day or night.
Engines/transmissions With Isuzu being the world’s largest maker of trucks and diesel engines, MU-X models have the benefit of the maker’s exclusive 3-litre turbo diesel 4JJ1-TC engine — generating 130 kW and 430 Nm — mated with the Aisin AWR6B45 six-speed automatic transmission.

What our residents are saying... We moved to Bellbrook in 2015. It’s been one of the best and exciting things we have done. My husband still works. The people make this place. We have a great life outside of the Village but the community here is just brilliant. We have so many new friends and lifestyle choices, including Cards and pool nights every Wednesday and happy hours on a Friday. Annette
