Sorcery goes on parade Autumn is about to cast its spell on visitors to Ballan. Thousands are expected to roll into town for the annual festival, on March 17, to enjoy the best food, drink, entertainment and market stalls Ballan has to offer. This Ballan Autumn Festival’s quirky academy of magic theme will incorporate all things mystical. Festival association president Kevin Harper said this year’s engagement from the community is “generating a momentum of its own”. “We’re building on the real family atmosphere created by last year’s Mad Hatter theme,” Mr Harper said. A main spectacle of the festival, now in its 44th year, is the Ballan farmer’s market, grand street parade and float competition. Other highlights included the magic cake decorating competition, the best pumpkin competition, the CWA’s high tea party, Scottish country dancing and roving magicians. “We’re still looking for any community groups keen to join the grand parade and we’re expecting 10,000 across the day.” Mr Harper encouraged all visitors to take part in the dress up portion of the event with trophies up for grabs. Melton rail priority call By Esther Lauaki Melton council is calling for the state government to move on the electrification of the rail line to Melton after Infrastructure Australia ranked it a priority. The national body last week released a list of 121 of the country’s most significant infrastructure proposals to guide investment. The Melton rail line upgrade was listed among the “priority initiatives” in Infrastructure Australia’s report. It stated that electrification of the line would help address overcrowding on the V/Line service, which would be unable to cope with

projected growth in passenger numbers in the next decade. Melton planning and development general manager Luke Shannon said the upgrade had long been high on the council’s wish list. “As one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing municipalities, Melton needs a metropolitanstandard rail service,” he said. “The upgrade of the rail line will allow more people to use public transport to access key employment areas in the CBD and inner-Melbourne suburbs and free up capacity on the road network. “Council is appreciative of the state government’s commitment to fund the

business case for the Western Rail Plan, which would include electrification of the Melton line, but calls on the government to include the business case in its 2019-20 budget, along with timelines for construction.” State Opposition Leader David Davis said Melton commuters had “suffered through the worst punctuality performance on record”. “Not only are trains consistently late, passengers have also faced mass cancellations and being jammed into train carriages like sardines,” Mr Davis said. The Ballarat Line upgrade also made the list of priority projects. It already has a business case and includes duplication between Deer

Park and Melton, due to be completed this year. Infrastructure Australia chair Julieanne Alroe said the projects and potential infrastructure solutions identified in this year’s list were responses to population growth and a need to reduce congestion. “Congestion in our cities and faster-growing regional centres not only has significant consequences for the Australian economy, but has direct impacts on communities, reducing people’s access to education, health services, employment and other opportunities,” she said. Police warning for shady tradies By Esther Lauaki Residents are being urged to stay on alert for dodgy tradies. Melton’s Julie Thomas is one of four residents in the area who say they fell victim to a tradesman advertising on Facebook who took deposits but did not complete the promised work. Ms Thomas, who last week received a refund of her $1000 deposit after she threatened to go to police, warned others to be vigil. “It took me weeks to get a refund but others

might not be so lucky,” she told Star Weekly. “I did some research and found out that the ABN numbers for the business were false and the business names used in the advertisements were deregistered.” Three more complainants messaged Ms Thomas after she posted a warning on various residents pages. One woman said she paid a $1900 deposit for painting which was never started and the tradesman asked for more money before he would start the job. Melton Leading Senior Constable Jo Mutsaets

urged residents to report any incidents to police. She encouraged locals to do their homework before handing over a deposit. “This type of crime is one that often goes unreported because it’s victims are usually elderly or they are embarrassed that they could have been misled in that way,” Senior Constable Mutsaets said. “We would ask that residents stay vigilant and report any dodgy tradesperson. “There are a few simple signs to look out for.” She warned residents to be weary of

tradespeople who offer very cheap home repair services such as driveway resurfacing, roof repairs or painting, ask for cash up front and put pressure on to do the work that day. Other tell-tale signs include no proof of identity, not allowing customers time to check credentials or offering to drive with residents to the bank to get the money. “Only use established tradespeople that give written quotes,” she said. Anybody with information about Melton door-to-door tradies are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.

John Bentley is ready for Clean Up Australia Day. (Luke Hemer)

Clean-up outing is a whole litter fun Melton botanist John Bentley will have plenty of his trusty tools handy for Clean Up Australia Day – and he hopes many of his fellow residents will join him. Mr Bentley will lead the clean-up project around Melton Botanic Gardens and surrounding areas next month. Clean Up Australia Day, on March 3, provides an opportunity for people to help beautify and preserve their local natural spaces in an initiative in its 30th year.

Melton mayor Bob Turner is encouraging residents to put on some gloves and pick up a rubbish bag. “Taking part in Clean Up Australia Day is not only a great way to help keep our local environment free of waste, but a good indicator of the types of rubbish that commonly find their way into our parks and waterways,” Cr Turner said. “Helping out encourages us to think about how we can reduce the amount of waste we

Steve McGhie MP

consume and produce, as well as improving our recycling habits. “Why not ask your family, friends and neighbours to come along and spend a couple of hours keeping the environment free from harmful and unsightly litter?” Participants can register clean-up site online or attend a pre-registered site. The home of the Westside Strikers Football Club is in line for a major makeover. Melton council will consider the $1.4 million redevelopment of the Brookside Recreation Reserve pavilion at its 2019-20 budget deliberations later this year. Cr Steve Aboushi said at this month’s meeting it was “a pleasure” to advocate for the project, which involves an expansion of the multi-purpose space to cater for 120 people, a larger kitchen, more storage and changeroom refurbishments. According to a council report, the pavilion is no longer meeting the needs of the sports community. “The Brookside Recreation Reserve experiences one of the highest usage rates of participation for active recreation reserves in the municipality,” the report stated. Tennis, cricket and soccer and other user groups told council officers an expanded social community space and female-friendly changerooms were high on their wish lists. Westside Strikers spokeswoman Julianna Ellis-Romano is thrilled that the project is on the council’s radar. “This is an incredibly positive outcome and represents a giant step forward for the WSFC and the local community,” Ms Ellis-Romano wrote on the club’s Facebook page. “WSFC would like to thank our councillors for having the vision to create better spaces and facilities for our club, its players, members and our growing community.” Esther Lauaki

Wave of new water works By Esther Lauaki Booming population growth in Melton is driving construction of essential sewer and water infrastructure in Western Water’s service region. Five projects, with a total value of $20.7 million, are under construction in Aintree, Truganina, Diggers Rest, Melton and Deanside. A new sewer pump station and three-kilometre pipeline are being built at

Aintree to service the population of more than 3000 residents. At the Mt Atkinson estate, a drinking water pipeline is being laid while work has also started on a two-kilometre sewerage pipe between

Diggers Rest and the Sunbury recycled water treatment plant. Pipe works in Melton and Deanside aim to help increase capacity and improve reliability to properties in those suburbs. Western Water acting managing director Rob Murphy said the company was investing significantly in projects to support growing communities. “We estimate that 50 new families move into our service region each week,” Mr Murphy

said. “Catering to this growth has been a key focus.” “We will spend about $68 million in capital works in 2018-19, a lot of that in growth areas. This investment will be ongoing over the coming years, as we continue to meet the increased demand for our services.” All five projects are expected to be completed by June this year, Mr Murphy said. Focus on mindfulness A series of workshops in Melton will teach residents and business owners about “mindfulness”. The first session, run by The Organic Place on March 2, will focus on the basics including what mindfulness is and its benefits, the four foundations of mindfulness, stress management and meditation practices and techniques to help small business owners manage financial concerns. The Organic Place owner Brooke Findley, a former nurse who will facilitate the workshops, said she wants to share her experiences with the community. “This type of formal mindfulness practice will help build up new neural pathways in the brain to create better focus and confidence to work through challenges,” Ms Findley said. “We’re in such a busy lifestyle and we don’t know how to switch off … once we learn how to switch off we are able to see things clearly.” Ms Findley, who started her business after she discovered her youngest child had severe

New paramedic HQ on the way By Esther Lauaki Bacchus Marsh paramedics will soon have a modern new home. Work has begun on the new $3 million Bacchus Marsh ambulance headquarters on Gisborne Road. The current facility, at Bacchus Marsh Road, was built in the 1960s on land that was deemed unsuitable for the new project. The new headquarters at the larger site will include a five-bay garage, four rest-and-recline rooms, training facilities, a fully equipped kitchen and improved security and carparking.

Ambulance Services Minister Jenny Mikakos said it would be home to more than 40 paramedics providing 24-hour coverage, with plenty of space for the service to grow. “In a medical emergency, every second counts – that’s why we’re building a state-of-the-art ambulance branch for Bacchus Marsh, which will mean even faster response times and more lives saved,” Ms Mikakos said. Breaking ground at the new site last Thursday hit close to home for Melton MP Steve McGhie. “As a former paramedic, I know how important high-quality facilities are to those we count on to save local lives,” he said.

“We’re backing our paramedics … giving locals the peace of mind that world-class lifesaving care is on its way when they need it most.” Latest quarterly performance data shows paramedics in Moorabool shire had improved response times, with 73.7 per cent of ambulances in the year to December arriving within 15 minutes for Code One emergencies, up from 62.7 per cent a year earlier. The average time for an ambulance to reach the scene of a Code One emergency in Moorabool in the same period improved from 14.24 minutes to 12.14 minutes.

Working towards a job Graduates of a Melton transition to work program have plenty to smile about. Ethan Henderson, Machar Kot, Molly Rose Dunn and Olivia McMahon were among 15 students who received their certificate III in customer service as part of the Employment Plus Transition to Work. The latest graduates last week mingled with potential employers and local councillors at a ceremony to mark the milestone and advise them for their journey ahead. Anti-bullying organisation, Bully Zero, was present to speak to the group about how to deal with adversity that they might face – be it at home or at work. Employment Plus national director Graeme White said the organisation was proud to provide young people with inspiration and the chance to network. “Our Transition to Work candidates

represent the younger faction of Employment Plus’ jobseekers,” Mr White said. “There is no guarantee that talent and intelligence will make job seeking easy or successful … not everyone gets the same opportunities. “Many of these candidates have lived through significant adversity and have substantially more difficulty finding work. “Building self-confidence and learning interpersonal skills is an important part of their journey to gainful employment. “We are thrilled our organisation has been able to financially and emotionally support these candidates to be job-ready.” Esther Lauaki Ethan Henderson, Machar Kot, Molly Rose Dunn and Olivia McMahon. Young couple appeal for help By Alesha Capone Johnny Canik was driving on the Western Ring Road, on the way to visit his fiancee and her parents, when he was involved in a devastating crash last month. The collision left the Truganina man with eight broken ribs, a broken sternum, collarbone and back injuries, a sprained wrist and whiplash. Mr Canik said he was driving along the Ring Road on January 21, when the truck in front of him braked suddenly, forcing him to brake as well.

The semi-trailer driving behind Mr Canik did not stop, pushing his car into the truck in front. Mr Canik’s head hit the steering wheel and his windscreen smashed upon impact. He remembers that police who arrived on the scene were reluctant to move him for fear of making his injuries worse. He was trapped in the car for about 25 minutes before paramedics arrived. “I was then taken to the Royal Melbourne, I spent hours in a neck brace and had scans done – I had to just look at the ceiling for hours, it was horrible, Mr Canik said. Although he is now back at home, doctors have ordered Mr Canik to take at least six weeks off work to recover. He said he has constant pain in his shoulders and neck, and cannot yet lift his arms above chest height.

Melton residents are being encouraged to “make a commitment to themselves and their loved ones by getting screened for cancer. Latest cancer screening figures showed that only 51 per cent of Melton women have had a breast screen between 2015 and 2017. And only 38 per cent of residents aged between 50 and 74, who were sent a home bowel cancer screening kit in the past year, have returned it, according to the data. Melton MP Steve McGhie urged residents to become more aware of what they can do to reduce their cancer risk. “We know that a cancer diagnosis can be devastating not only for the person, but for friends and loved ones and that’s why we are committed to cancer prevention and early detection, Mr McGhie said. “Screening and early diagnosis is key to surviving many types of cancer. “That’s why it is so important to keep up regular screening and to talk to your GP if you have any concerns. The state’s latest health figures shows that 1168 people in the Melton electorate are presently living with cancer and more than 350 people are diagnosed each year. The most common cancers were prostate, breast, bowel and skin.

He will dress in drag when he participates in the MS Melbourne half marathon, which raises funds to support people with multiple sclerosis, on March 31. Mr Wattelet, whose wife Audrey has multiple sclerosis, will take part in the event along with 13 friends under the team name of “Not MSing around. Mr Wattelet said a friend “dared him to dress in drag for the half-marathon if the team managed to raise $3000. “A lot of friends and family thought is was a great idea, obviously a little embarrassing but everyone sees the fun side of it, he said. His team has already raised almost $3800, and is aiming to reach $5000. Mr Wattelet grew up in Hoppers Crossing, and he and Audrey previously lived in Wyndham Vale. They are renting in Melton, while building a new house for their family in Bacchus March. Mr Wattelet described Audrey as an “amazing mother and wife to himself, their teenage daughter and two young sons. “She’s the soul and heart of our family and always puts everyone before herself, he said. Mr Wattelet said Audrey was diagnosed with MS in 2014. He said at first, she experienced minimal symptoms, but experienced a “major flare-up in December which had caused her to go “from a vibrant, strong, active person to not being able to walk or shower on her own. “Our kids have really stepped up – it’s amazing how resilient they are, he said. “We have also had a huge amount of help

JDC Studios has been a high performer at the annual Kids Artistic Revue competition, and this year added to it’s impressive haul of accolades by taking out the Top Studio award for a fourth straight year, alongside a range of individual awards. It was also named as the regional champions in the Starpower Talent Competition.

Studio director Jason Di Cicco said it was a big tick for the work of everyone at the studio. “We believe in providing our students with top quality training and highly skilled teachers,” he said. “We offer all new students the opportunity to come down and trial our classes whether it be for fun, sit exams, or for students who want to compete in competitions.” Mr Di Cicco will now begin preparing a group of his dancers for their next challenge, performing at Disneyland in the US as well

as attending the Abby Lee Dance Company, which featured in the TV series Dance Moms. “In June last year I travelled to Las Vegas representing Melbourne as an international adjudicator for the American dance competition finals,” Mr Di Cicco said. “After seeing the American talent I thought it would be an amazing experience to travel to America later this year with my students.” JDC Studios will have an open week starting on February 25, with interested dancers getting the chance to come and trial the facilities.

Melton and Moorabool councils can apply for a share in more than $70 million for safer and more reliable roads. Applications are open for the second round of state funding of up to $1.5 million for rural councils to carry out road rehabilitation and resealing works, road safety improvements, bridge strengthening and other upgrades. The Melton west community has recently ramped up campaigning for a diamond interchange at Bulmans Road while a Ballan resident last week petitioned Moorabool council to fix up Hogan Road. Roads Minister Jaala Pulford said the funding boost builds on the biggest road maintenance blitz regional Victoria has ever seen. “We’re investing $333 million this year to repair, rebuild and resurface more than 1500 kilometres of country arterial roads,” Ms Pulford said. “We’re getting on with the biggest road maintenance blitz ever, fixing the roads that communities across western Victoria rely on. “Round two is now open, as we continue to deliver a safer, more reliable road network for every Victorian.” Applications for round two close March 18 with successful projects to be announced in April. Councils must deliver these projects by June next year. Details: www.regionalroads.vic.gov. au. Esther Lauaki

NEWS

MY PLACE Reverend Charles Sherlock has a passion for higher learning. The Trentham resident was recently made a member of the Australian Order for services to the church. He spoke with Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to Moorabool? I have lived in Trentham for 20 years. What are you passionate about? I’ve always been passionate about theology, friends and community life, Meccano and model-making and gardening.

(Shawn Smits)

You were made a member of the Australian Order for significant service to the Anglican church and to theological education earlier this year. How did you take the news? I was surprised and delighted, especially at the recognition of decades of back-room theological work. You have been working in theological education for many years. What is the best part of doing what you do?

What other hats do you wear in the community?

Making friends across a range of Christian traditions, exploring life and the universe and everything to make this earth more like God intends it to be.

I am secretary of our Community Bank, and of the Trentham Men’s Shed. I am an active member of the St George’s Anglican church, the historical society and sustainability group.

What do you love about Trentham? The soil, the heritage and now its newness. What would you like to see improved? The town zoning. A locally-led community

plan is underway currently. I would also like to see more discipline about water. I want to see The Mechanics project, which aims to develop a hub with better facilities for the community, done, and more church participation of course.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir’’s take on fusion confusion Kenny Consider The Sauce and one of its regular dining pals had been vaguely talking about a visit to Fork & Fingers to try its Indian fusion food for more than a year. In the end, though, it was with four other regular members off Team CTS that the deed was done. As the arrangement were being made, one of them quipped: “Butter chicken lasagne – that place has piqued my interest. I feel it’s either going to be really good or terrible.” Did our experience of that dish, and the food in general, attain for us such polarised extremes? No. Perhaps it would’ve been prefera f ble ffor it to have done so. Forkk & Fingers lives in a longg room done out lovely, ffeaturing exposed brickk and all sorts of visual stimuli such as posters and murals. Half the menu here is dedicated to familiar Indian fare such as paani puri and beef madras. But the other half is dedicated to Indian f ion dishes – and it’s fo fus f r them we’re here. Here’s what hat we hav ha e: Skinnyy vegan tofu f meatballs ($14) are two spheres off toffu and vegan cheese. They sit on a salan gravy, are topped by grated radish and are good in a crumblyy wa way – though the flavours are low volume (this will become a recurrent theme). Crab roll with Indian pesto and asparagus ($16) is another good-lookingg dish. Going by the texture, we conclude there is real crab, though there is no discernible asparagus. Beryy Indian fa f lafe f l ($12) taste less like

FORK & FINGERS Address: 230 Union Road, Ascot Vale Phone: 9041 2436 anythingg with Middle Eastern roots and more like the pakora theyy resemble, with a rather doughy ghy interior. So what off the butter chicken lasagne ($20)? I find it a muddle off muted flavours that cancel each other out. Lamb vindaloo tacos ($19) are simply that and good in a no-fuss way way. Lamb rogan josh shepherd’s pie ($19), like the lasagne, falls short of expectations. It’s OK, but the lamb fillingg is rather dull. A lot off thought and work has gone into creatingg these dishes. But I can’t help but fee f l that it has been misdirected. I was crying out ffor more striking flavours, a much higher degree of zing, big hits of tongue-tingling excitement. We’ve had a lovely night. But I do not recall at anyy stage, anyone at our table exclaiming … “Oh, wow!!!” Or … “OMG – that’s amazing!!!” Instead, it was more a case of: “Hmmmm, OK, next …” Kenny Weir is the foun f der off Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

Pristine presentation is a strong feature of this four-year-old house in Pennyroyal estate – it’s ripe and ready for an easy move-in day. It has four big carpeted bedrooms with robes and there’s also a study nook. The main bedroom has a walk-in and a smart en suite with dual vanity basins and twin shower. The open-plan layout includes a carpeted lounge room facing the street and a light-filled tiled living hub nearer the back. The kitchen in here is all white, with seamless overhead cabinetry and large drawers below. It also has a stone-topped island breakfast bar, a 900mm cooker and a dishwasher. Also featured are ducted heating, a split-system and high ceilings. The property has a large alfresco area and a double garage.

In a quiet neighbourhood, this near-new unit is smart and modern and ideal for first-home buyers or investors. Good tenants are willing to remain should an investor become the purchaser. It has three grey-carpeted bedrooms with the same grey rollerblinds as on all windows; they share a fresh grey-and-white bathroom. A good-sized grey-tiled living room, with split-system, incorporates a streamlined kitchen with a brekkie bench, cupboard pantry, subway splashback tiles and underbench oven and gas cooktop. A patch of synthetic turf provides outdoor space for setting up table and chairs, while pebbled surrounds are ready for planting. The property has a single garage.

Built by the former owner, this large, beautifully presented house on about 895 square metres has plenty of spread-out space for a family. With three-metre ceilings and lots of large windows dressed in a mix of elegant drapes and holland blinds, the feeling of space is immediately evident. The entry hall is flanked by two of the four fitted bedrooms, an open tiled lounge room and, behind sliding doors, a carpeted theatre room. The main bedroom, with bay window, has a walk-in robe and dual-basin en suite. The main bathroom, with a spa tub, shares a hallway with the other two bedrooms, separate toilet and laundry. The expansive living hub has the meals zone within a bay window, while the kitchen – under a downlit bulkhead – has loads of timber cabinetry, a breakfast bench for three, white subway tiles on splashback, dual wall ovens and gas cooktop and dishwasher. A spacious covered alfresco area doubles as a carport behind the drive-through double garage, and there’s a shed/garage down the back. The large backyard has a good lawn and trees along the fence. Gas ducted heating, refrigerated cooling and a 5kW solar system are included. Woodgrove Shopping Centre, Navan Park and Catholic Regional College are all close by.

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Battle on for top honours By Tara Murray Top spot is on the line for St Anthonys in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts. In a top-of-the-table clash, the winner between St Anthonys and Rupertswood will lead the ladder into the final round of the season. With the only other game between the two sides ending in a washout earlier in the season, it should be the best indication of how the two sides match up. Saints captain-coach Cam Clayton said it was an important match. “We want to cement top spot,” he said. “It was a shame we didn’t get to finish the one-day game before Christmas and it’s a pretty even competition. “We want to play tough cricket heading into finals and prepare for bigger things.” Clayton said they were happy with their situation after day one against Rupertswood. The Saints bowled Rupo out for 199 in the 68th over. “At drinks they had the upper hand at 2-70,” Clayton said. “After tea we took four quick wickets to turn the momentum. We did really well to restrict them to that score.” Jason Orr was the pick of the bowlers, with 3-25 off nine overs. Warren Haffenden and Robert Strugnell chipped in with two wickets each. The Saints managed to get through four overs unscathed and were 0-10 at stumps.

John Jensen will resume at three not out, while Justin Craven is yet to score. Clayton said it wasn’t about getting runs on the board during those four overs. “It didn’t matter how many runs that we had on the board, we just didn’t want to lose any wickets,” he said. “We’re starting to click with the bat now. We’ve got a couple of guys down the order that we’d like to have a bit more of a bat and hit some form.” Clayton is the division’s leading scorer and said he might move down the order to give those players an opportunity. He said he knew he had to stand out this season. It’s a big weekend all round for the Saints, with two other sides also playing in top-of-the-table matches with top spot on the line. In other matches, Bacchus Marsh made 9-232 against Eynesbury Eagles. Skipper Drew Closter top scored with 42 at the top of the order. Brandon Shearson and Jason Tardrew took three wickets each for the Eagles. Ashfield is in prime position to keep its finals hopes alive, after a strong day against Riddell. Ashfield will resume at 1-37 in reply to Riddell’s 168. The East Sunbury and Gisborne game is evenly poised. The Thunder is 1-38 in reply to Gisborne’s 182. St Anthonys’ Matthew Perry gets the wicket of Rupertswood’s Mick Treweek. (Mark Wilson)

SPORT Young Phoenix all set for a faster start Melton Phoenix’s FFA Cup campaign is over in the second qualifying round after a thrilling match against White Star Dandenong on Saturday. After twice fighting back to level the scores, the Phoenix was finally undone by an unsuccessful penalty shoot-out. Phoenix trailed 2-0, before levelling the scores early in the second half. In extra time, Dandenong again hit the front with a goal in the 95th minute, before Jason Hill levelled the scores again five minutes later. With scores equal at the end of extra time, Phoenix lost the penalty shoot-out 6-5. Speaking before the match, Phoenix coach Mark Parnis said the FFA Cup was a good opportunity to get some match practice in before the FFV state league 5 west season. “We go into the FFA Cup with eyes wide open,” he said. “If we win, we get another competitive game. If not, we reassess and look to round one.”

Bringing through the next generation will be a big focus for Parnis this season, with a number of young players joining the club. He said players knew there would be opportunities to play senior football if they put in the hard work. “It’s not the full side playing … there’s a lot of young kids that are coming through who want to play senior football,” he said. “I know some of these players have bright futures. There will be a lot of competition for spots. “People know that I’m going to give young players a go. “It’s not a matter of just going with youth … we have a base of older players. “The young guys who are coming through will eventually take their spots.” Parnis said he had been happy with the team’s pre-season, which had included a training camp in Bendigo. He said he hoped that would flow on to the start of the FFV season, and so

avoid the sort of slow start the side experienced last season. Parnis said he expected the side to be better than last year’s eighth place. “We’re looking to be a little bit better than last year,” he said. “As long as everyone is on the same page, we’ll do better. “We’re not looking to have a slow start and we want promotion. “We think we have the boys that can do the job if we don’t have injuries and can keep them on the park. “Realistically, you have to play well every week to push to the top with only one team getting promoted this year.” Tara Murray Jason Hill, Phoenix’s leading scorer last year, hit the scoreboard on Saturday. Darley has a big chase on its hands against ladder leaders Mt Clear in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Needing a victory to keep their slight finals hopes alive, the Lions had a tough day in the field with Mt Clear making 272. Bradley Barnes was the pick of the bowlers for the Lions with 4-69. The Lions will resume at 0-4.

VTCA

Melton Centrals has moved to the top of the Victoria Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Shield Division 5 competition ladder with one round remaining. In a top-two battle, Centrals’ total of 4-399 proved to be more than enough against Aberfeldie. Centrals bowled Aberfeldie out for 88. Centrals skipper Adam Hulett took 4-11. The win also cements the Centrals’ finals berth with one round remaining. Melton South Royals slipped out of the top four with a loss to Jacana. After no play on day one, the Royals made 8-142 from their overs. Jacana finished 5-145 in reply. The Royals, who face Footscray ANA in the final round, sit five points outside the top four and they need a win and other results to go their way in the final round.

Melton back on track By Tara Murray Melton kept its finals hopes alive after an improved performance on Saturday in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west. After a couple of tough weeks when the side slipped out of the top six, the Lions regrouped on Saturday against Altona. Altona won the toss and elected to bat and the Lions’ bowlers got down to work – bowling the A’s out for 122 to be in control after day one. Lions coach Nathan Geisler said he was pleased with their performance with the ball. “It was a good day, we bowled really well,” he said. “We spoke during the week that the focus on Saturday was to do whatever we had to do well and give ourselves the best opportunity heading into day two. “It took a number of overs to get them out,

but when we weren’t taking wickets, they weren’t scoring runs. “We took most of our chances and set ourselves up for next week.” Jake Charge was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-34. Geisler said Adrian Monitto and Prabath Priyankara also bowled well. Priyankara took the key wickets of Altona skipper Adam Yates and Greg Sheehan. While more than happy with restricting the A’s to 122, Geisler let the rest of the side know the challenge is still ahead of them. Batting has been the Lions downfall this season, especially in recent weeks as they’ve struggled to chase down totals. The Lions will resume at 2-21, with the game still in their favour. Ash Sweet was 10 not out at stumps while Dylan Clarke is on five not out after the Lions changed the batting line-up around to try and keep the top batsmen in the

shed for day two. Pawan Wickramasinghe and David Dickinson are the batsmen out. Geisler said they were sticking to the basics in their campaign to return to the winners’ list. The ninth-placed Lions, who sit a game outside the top six, need a win and other results to go their way to keep their finals hopes alive. Two of those sides the Lions are fighting against are Yarraville and Ormond, who play each other this week. The other side competing for a finals spot is Elsternwick, who need 240 for victory against Williamstown. “It wasn’t ideal losing two wickets, but we’re still in a good position,” Geisler said. “We’ve got 101 to get and we’re just focusing on that. We’re confident of getting the runs and hopefully we should get the six points. “Hopefully conditions suit us and we can get the runs.”

Sydenham Hillside sealed its finals berth with a big win against Grand United in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Charles Clark Shield division 4 competition. With nothing separating second to sixth, every win in the run home is important. On Saturday, the Storm restricted Grand United to 4-215 before making 5-216 in reply to move to second on the ladder. Caroline Springs slipped from the top four, with a loss to Moonee Valley. Caroline Springs were bowled out for 181, with Moonee Valley reaching the runs with two wickets in hand, finishing 8-185. In the final round, the Storm face second bottom Moonee Valley, while Caroline Springs faces bottom side Sunshine YCW. Caroline Springs need to win and hope results go their way to play finals. North West Titans let last game slip from their grasp North Western Titans suffered a frustrating end to the Baseball Victoria Summer League men’s division 3 season. In a season which has been filled with missed opportunities, the Titans let slip the perfect chance to finish the season on a high. Facing bottom side Ormond Glenhuntly Gold, the Titans lost 8-6 on Sunday. Titans coach Danny Haymes said it was a disappointing way to end the season. “We took a while to get going,” he said. “We let ourselves down and then the tight calls went against us and hurt us bad. “We nearly came back to win, but it wasn’t to be. We should have won.” The Titans were decked out in pink as a fundraiser for breast cancer. Each year the side’s final game of the year is dedicated to a charity. “Everyone wore pink and sprayed their hair pink,” Haymes said. Haymes said there was at least three

occasions this season, including this game, where they could have won but hadn’t been able to finish it off. He said the side is struggling with knowing how to win and it was hurting them. “We played really well against some of the top teams. We pushed the top team to nine innings, which most teams hadn’t been able to do. “We were leading the bottom of the seventh against the third team and then lost. “I think if we had some more personnel we would be able to finish off those games and get wins.” Despite a somewhat frustrating season, Haymes said they had improved on their first year together and were continuing to develop. The Titans finished the season in fifth with three wins. Haymes said they were already working on next season and were talking to potential recruits.

He said the club would also have a winter league team for the first time, to keep the group playing together. The season also came to an end for the Titans women’s side on Saturday. Playing top side Wheelers Hill Warriors, the Titans pushed them all the way before falling short, 16-14. It’s the first time the Titans have had a women’s side. Haymes said the women’s side finished the season on a high note. “It was a very pleasant game to watch,” Haymes said. “The girls have improved a lot and are a great group of girls. “Most are already planning on coming back next year and some are planning to play in the winter competition. Everyone said they loved playing our team as they had some fun and it was always a good game.” Tara Murray

Four into three doesn’t go

Bacchus Marsh’s James Bailey appeals for the wicket of Sunbury United’s Damien Edwards. (Mark Wilson)

Bulls tune up for finals By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh is hoping for consistency with the bat and ball in the lead-up to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts finals. Sitting on top with just one loss for the season, the Bulls are on track to repeat their premiership win of last season. But Bulls coach James Lidgett knows it’s not something they can take for granted. “We have to be really careful and the key is not getting complacent,” he said. “We want to keep on playing the brand of cricket that has worked so well for us this year.” Lidgett was happy after the Bulls’ performance on day one of their match against Sunbury United. The Bulls are in complete control, bowling United out for 159. But Lidgett said that while the scoreboard showed a good performance with the ball, United had challenged them. 26 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 19, 2019

“We were pretty happy … to have them challenge us and we were able to hit back well,” he said. “One of the aims, the last three weeks heading into finals, is to find some consistency with the bat and ball.” Star Bulls bowler Madushanka Ekanayaka took 4-31 to take his season tally to 38. Daniel Lalor was the other standout, taking 4-27. Lidgett said Lalor had become a bowler they could turn to with the ball. “Dan’s been a good find with the ball this season,” he said. “He worked really hard on it through the off season. “He could nearly be considered an all-rounder and he’s only 15.” The Bulls started well with the bat and will resume at 0-30. Peter Lalor will resume at 21 not out and Alex Porter was seven. As it did with the bat, Lidgett said United showed some resistance early on. “There was a bit of fire from Sunbury United

and that’s credit to them,” he said. “We batted through a tough period and were able to take the wind out of their sails.” In other matches, Diggers Rest Bulla needs 194 against Gisborne. Needing a win to keep the pressure on the top four, the Burras had a slow start before starting to get frequent wickets. Captain-coach Rasika Batepola and Kevin Barker took three wickets each for the Burras. Daniel Trevillian top-scored for the Dragons with 41 not out. Sunbury needs nine runs to gain first-innings points against Wallan. Wallan made 9-120 with only 10 players batting, before the Roar scrambled to 8-111 at stumps. Jason McGann was the star for the Roar, taking 5-49. Romsey had a day out with the bat against Woodend, making 328. Skipper Ben Way top-scored with 113 and Chris Burkett made 72.

The battle for Central Highlands Bowls division’s top grade finals spots will go down to the final round of the season. Only top side Gisborne Red is assured of a finals place, with Bacchus Marsh, Lancefield, Kyneton Golf and Kyneton fighting it out for the other three. Gisborne Red remains on top of the ladder heading into the final round, despite a big loss to Bacchus Marsh, 98 (15)-83 (3). Simon Cornock and Daniel Willis led winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh, while Phil Minniti shared the points in his match with Graham Quaife. Tim Rogers was the winning skip for Gisborne Red. The win moved Bacchus Marsh to 161 points, three points behind Gisborne Red. Gisborne Red picked up three points in the loss, which proved vital to assure their finals spot with one round remaining. While they sit 17 points clear of fifth-placed Kyneton, Gisborne can’t slip out of the top four due to final round matches between teams in the top five. Lancefield, Kyneton Golf and Kyneton all had wins on Saturday. Lancefield claimed all 18 points in its 102 (18)-70 (0) win against Trentham. Jeffrey Holmes’ rink was the big winner for Lancefield, winning 31-17. Lancefield sits third, equal on points with second-placed Bacchus Marsh. Kyneton Golf was the big winner of the day, smashing Gisborne Yellow, 121 (18)-73 (0). All Golf rinks won by at least six shots. Kyneton kept the pressure on the top four sides with a 109 (16)-69 (2) win against Romsey. Craig Vincent’s rink had a day out winning by 19 shots. The result leaves Kyneton on 147 points, six points behind fourth-placed Kyneton Golf. They were four points behind entering Saturday’s match. The battle to avoid relegation will also go down to the wire, with Gisborne Yellow and Trentham looking to avoid bottom spot. Gisborne Yellow sits eight points ahead of bottom-placed Trentham. Woodend, Bacchus Marsh, Macedon Ranges and Kyneton Blue were the winners in division 2, while Gisborne, Kyneton, Macedon Ranges, Woodend and Bacchus Marsh won in division 3. Tara Murray
