Grease is the word Actors, singers and dancers had better shape up – Bacchus Marsh needs stars for its next production. Performing Arts Headquarters community theatre company is looking for T-Birds and Pink Ladies for its production of Grease, which will open later this year. Company directors JohnPaul and Mai Pyin Cocking are encouraging males in particular to audition for the iconic roles of Kenickie and Danny, the latter made famous by John Travolta in the 1978 movie version. JohnPaul said the company hopes to follow the success of last year’s production, We Will Rock You. “Audiences can expect all of those much-beloved songs – Grease is the Word, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted to You and Greased Lightning Lightning,” he said. “We are also looking to expand our on-stage pit rock band with additional wind and string players.” Male, female, adult and youth actors, singers, dancers and musicians are encouraged to audition. Auditions will run from March 1 to 9 at Impresario Theatre, with performances to take place in August and September. Details: 5367 6864 DAISY WOODS AND LACHLAN BEARD

Fight on to stop the rot By Esther Lauaki Moorabool residents and Bacchus Marsh Grammar are fighting to prevent expansion of operations at the Maddingley waste facility. The Maddingley Brown Coal site at Tilleys Road is used to handle landfill and recycling materials, as well as for mining coal. An application by Maddingley Brown Coal to amend the planning permit for the waste portion of the facility is out for public comment until March 5. The application is to increase the landfill operating hours to include Good Friday and
Christmas Day and to seek permission to accept “putrescible waste” which would include household waste containing organic material that will rot. Town planning consultant Andrew Rodda, acting on the company’s behalf, said the amendments were a response to the 13.5-million-cubic-metre site becoming a designated “waste hub of state significance” last year and would enable the introduction of innovative treatment technologies. Mr Rodda said that no further building or works would be required to accept putrescible waste.
Bacchus Marsh Grammar has lodged an objection. Principal Andrew Neil said he believed the school’s objections would “carry more weight” with support from the community. “The waste facility is located within 2.5 kilometres of the Maddingley school campus and … currently this type of waste is specifically excluded from the original planning permit granted by Moorabool council,” Mr Neil said. “Our objection covers issues such as student safety, odour, traffic, dust, visual amenity and impact on environment and ground water.”
A school parent, who asked not to be named, told Star Weekly that he feared the increased operations at the site could affect his child’s health. “This proposal is walking distance to Bacchus Marsh Grammar where my son and around 2000 other sons and daughters go,” he said. “This planned expansion could have a serious health impact on all those students, teachers, parents and surrounding residents. “The traffic, which is already dangerous, would be made worse also.” Application details: bit.ly/2EdRSpY

Police hunt for missing puppies By Esther Lauaki The owner of a litter of six-week-old boxer puppies taken from a Melton house is appealing for help to find his beloved pets. The six pups were at their Tern Court home when a man arrived at the house claiming he had bought them and arranged with their owner Matthew Perry to pick them up. Mr Perry wrote on a residents’ group Facebook page that the man was in a silver Mitsubishi Triton. “My father being the only one home, as I was playing cricket, greeted the male at the front
door … then the male proceeded to make up a story telling my dad that he had just spoken with me and was here to pick up the litter of six boxer pups. “He actually started by saying, ‘Hi John, I’ve just spoken with Matt on the phone and I’m here to pick up all the pups’.” Mr Perry said his elderly father led the man through the house and all six pooches were taken. “I am absolutely gutted and devastated at what has happened,” he said. “I’m more than happy for them [to] … simply drop them off in a box at my front door or even somehow put
them back in the room out the back.” News of the missing puppies has gone viral with Mr Perry’s story being shared more than 1000 times. Dog lovers from as far as Western Australia are on the lookout for the puppies. Melton Police released CCTV images of a silver Mitsubishi Triton twin-cab ute and are keen to talk to anybody who may be able to help to identify the driver. Police said the puppies were not old enough for collection. Any information to Melton Police on 9797 7999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Springing into action A Caroline Springs School is aiming to be the most active school in Victoria for the second year running. Springside P-9 College was named the most active in the state after last year’s Active April initiative, with nearly 1000 of its students registered to kickstart healthy habits. Active April is a state government initiative that urges Victorians of all ages, abilities and fitness levels to complete 30 minutes of exercise each day throughout the month. Physical education teacher Jess Francke said
the school hoped to smash its previous record and encourage the local community to do the same. “We aim to promote physical activity and getting enjoyment from exercise at our school,” Ms Francke said. “The initiative is run over the school holidays, so gives the pupils a calendar of activities that they can do while they are not at school. “It doesn’t have to be anything too difficult. During school, we run activities in the gym, which might include skipping, hopscotch or a
game against the teachers.” Registration is free and includes a range of offers, including a 10-day pass for new members at Melton Waves. Active April participants can access the Get Active Workouts video series via the app. It includes 30 videos demonstrating 10-minute workout ideas designed to inspire and motivate participants of all ages and abilities. More than 60 charges have been laid against seven teenagers in relation to a brawl in Caroline Springs earlier this month. Wayward Taskforce detectives arrested the youths while executing search warrants across the west on February 15. The arrests come after police were called to reports of a group of about 20 people fighting at Caroline Springs Boulevard just after midnight on Sunday, February 10. Three people were injured during the incident. Two men, aged 18 and 29, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds. Among those charged were a 16-year-old from Melton, a 16-year-old from Taylors Hill, a 16-year-old from Sunbury, a 15-year-old from Melton South, a 14-year-old from Taylors Hill and a 13-year-old from Tarneit. A 15-year-old from Hillside is also expected to be charged on summons. Charges laid against the teens ranged from affray and multiple counts of intentionally causing injury to assault with a weapon. The arrests come after two boys were arrested by police at the scene of the fight. Of those two teens, a 17-year-old Melton boy was charged with affray and bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date, while a 16-year-old was released pending further inquiries. The investigation is ongoing. Esther Lauaki

Hats off to caring hands Nimble-fingered residents at Ingenia Gardens Melton have been hard at work knitting beanies to donate to seriously-ill children. Patricia Taylor, Zena Millar, Viv Moore and Lois Myers were among the group of nine senior residents who knitted 100 beanies to provide a little extra comfort for children at Parkville’s Ronald McDonald House. Village manager Sylvia Cassar said last week she was happy to hand over the special delivery of hats that were crafted over seven weeks. Ms Cassar said the residents loved coming together to help support others in need. “The group of ladies are very happy to be doing something nice for the families at Ronald McDonald House who are going through a hard time,” Ms Cassar said.
“Ingenia Communities partnership kicked off last year and we wanted to contribute – this is the perfect way for our residents to get involved.” Ingenia Gardens resident Vivienne Moore said the worthy cause helped to bring joy to the lives of the families who are living away from home at Ronald McDonald House. “We enjoy taking the time to visit and help these children in a way that the hospitals can’t,” Ms Moore said. “It’s important to be involved with places like Ronald McDonald House Parkville, helping to put a smile on little ones’ faces – it’s nice for them to know we care.”

Vandals drive food truck away By Esther Lauaki A popular Melton food truck operator has taken its business elsewhere after being targeted by vandals. Greek food fans expressed their disappointment that Pappas Urban Mix Grill has been forced to relocate, from High Street where it has been operating since the beginning of the year, because vandals keep tampering with gas fixtures on the truck. Owners Selda and Michael Papadatos, well known through their Unitt Street flagship fish and chip shop, announced last Friday the family-run food truck venture would be moving to a more secure site in Maidstone after being hit three times in the past three weeks. Mr Papadatos told Star Weekly the couple were as disappointed as their customers to be moving. “I always check the gas the day before I trade and I knew that there was enough to get me through the day … but I ran out of gas early and had to close up,” he said. “When it happened again the next week, I drove it all the way out to Campbellfield to have it serviced and was told that the fixtures were being tampered with. “It’s dangerous for whoever is doing it and dangerous for us as well.” Ms Papadatos thanked regular customers for their support. “Michael and myself would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for those that have supported us over the last couple of months,” she wrote on the business’ Facebook page. “The manufacturer conducting a thorough inspection of the trailer has concluded that some … person thinks it’s OK to tamper and vandalise the trailer. Because the incidents are repeatedly happening, we have decided to relocate the trailer to a secure site.”
Step it up for women Women’s health and safety will be the focus of the Walk With Her event in Melton. The annual community walk, at Navan Park on March 3, is organised by Djerriwarrh Health Services’ Women Making it Happen group and aims to show support for a safe, respectful community. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said the event was about promoting the right to respect and ensure the safety of all members of the community – especially women and children. “All women, of all ages, should have the right to feel safe in their own community,” Ms Scott said. “Our health promotion team has prioritised the prevention of violence against women as one of its Integrated Health Promotion project areas. “Djerriwarrh Health Services is passionate about the Walk with Her event, and I encourage everyone to show their support and participate on the day.” The free Walk With Her event is one of several local initiatives in the lead-up to International Women’s Day on March 6. Participants in the walk can show their interest online: bit.ly/2Shb3E7 or on the day from 10am. Esther Lauaki

A prototype for success By Tate Papworth Dawt Hnem Sung Sarum is breaking new ground. The 19 year-old from Caroline Springs, who is known as Nunu, is the first recipient of Victoria University and City West Water’s Celebrating Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) scholarship. Nunu is one of only a handful of women stuyding engineering at VU. She was nominated for the scholarship by one of her lecturers, and said she was over the moon.

Bus revamp for Heights Burnside Heights residents will soon have better access to public transport and improved links to the Caroline Springs town centre. A revised bus route 426 will also provide easier access to Albion and Sunshine stations. New bus stops will be installed on Westwood Drive ahead of the changes, which will take affect on Sunday, May 19. The revised route 426 timetable will have more than 400 trips a week, from 5am to after midnight Monday to Saturday and from 7am to midnight on Sundays. Frequency will be increased, allowing improved access to key destinations including Caroline Springs town centre and Sunshine. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the upgrades were a win for the community. “We’re making public transport more accessible for the residents of Burnside Heights by bringing services to their doorstep,” she said. “The is the latest improvement to the bus network throughout Caroline Springs, making sure that locals can get where they need to go.” The state government says the revamp has been made possible following the opening of the Westwood Drive bridge and is the latest phase in a roll-out of an upgraded bus network for the area.

“I was really surprised when I found out,” she said. “It means a lot to me. I never thought I’d receive something like this. When I was nominated, I was so happy with that – so when I got a call to say I’d won, it was overwhelming.” Nunu credits Victoria University’s new first-year learning model with being a big part of her success. “There’s some subjects I struggle with, but my friends have really helped,” she said. “They do a different study style here and there’s a lot of benefit to it.” Nunu arrived in Australia as a refugee from Myanmar (Burma) in 2014 and said her time in Australia had been nothing but positive. “I’ve been really lucky and haven’t experienced any discrimination … everyone has been really welcoming,” she said.

Dumping ground angers resident By Esther Lauaki A Melton South resident says he fears the parklands around his house are becoming a “wasteland”. Darren Murray told Star Weekly the mounting rubbish problem around Parklea Homestead was getting out of hand. “I normally walk around there with the dogs and there is everything from household rubbish to hard rubbish and old building scraps,” Mr Murray said. “On the Abbey Road side of the park, there’s a spot there where people dump tree clippings
and lawn. It’s becoming a real dumping ground.” Mr Murray said he had reported the sites to council and urged other residents to follow suit. Melton mayor Bob Turner said litter and illegal dumping would not be tolerated and offenders would be prosecuted when caught. “There is absolutely no excuse for illegal dumping,” Cr Turner said. “It’s disgusting to think that some people believe they can use our beautiful city as a personal dumping ground. “You can be fined more than $9000 for dumping rubbish.
“If you are caught illegally dumping … you will be fined – it’s as simple as that.” Melton homeowners and tenants receive two free tip passes a year that enable them to drop hard waste at the Melton Transfer Station. Residents can also organise a hard waste collection from their home. The mini-boom at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital began in the early evening of February 13 and only quietened down in the morning of February 15. Maternity manager Pauline Carrache said each of the babies were precious additions to their families. “It’s very busy, but lovely to see,” Ms Carrache said. She said that 60 babies were born at the hospital in December – the highest number since 2015 – and another 48 are expected to be born next month. Esther Lauaki

Kindergarten Readiness Month
Cr Bob Turner Last week, I travelled to Canberra as part of the National Growth Areas Alliance Catch up with the Outer Suburbs campaign launch at Parliament House. The Federal election campaign is calling for better access to roads, transport, local jobs and community facilities in fast growing outer suburbs across Australia.
Are you preparing to send your little one to 4-year-old kindergarten in 2020? March is Kindergarten Readiness Month and parents and carers of toddlers are encouraged to take part in activities and information sessions that will help families make the leap into preschool education. Run by Melton City Council and City of Melton Kindergarten providers, the sessions are free and are an opportunity for parents to meet teachers, ask questions and help identify if their child is ready for kinder.
I met with Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development Anthony Albanese, Member for Gorton, Brendan O’Connor MP and the Office of the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development to put Melton’s case forward for an upgrade to the Western Highway. Around 60,000 vehicles use the highway each day, and this is set to increase to 113,000 by 2031. The highway can’t cope with this growth,
Kindergarten applications for 2020 open on 13 March 2019.

Designed to improve access and safety around the area after dark, the project saw the installation of 72 light poles which illuminate the paths and communal spaces, so residents can enjoy a range of activities like walking the dog, going for a run or riding a bike.
Caroline Springs Library and Learning Hub Thursday 7 March, 11.00am to 12.30pm Botanica Springs Children’s and Community Centre Thursday 7 March, 4.00pm to 5.30pm Bookings for information sessions are required. Kindergarten Open Week Come along and explore your local Kindergarten between Monday 18 March and Friday 22 March, 6pm to 8pm. Meet teachers, ask questions & gather information to help inform your decision in which Kindergarten to enrol your child. Bookings for open week are not required. For parent information session bookings and a list of participating kindergartens, visit melton.vic.gov.au/kinderready
It’s also a fantastic spot to sit and watch native birdlife, have a picnic, let your kids run off some energy or meet up with family and friends, so please head down one warm evening to have a look. Also in Caroline Springs, the progress of the leisure centre has been right on target, with the first local sports enthusiasts due to get on court in April.
and needs urgent upgrades to improve safety and reduce congestion. The section of the Western Highway in the City of Melton already suffers from significant levels of congestion during peak periods, and is characterised by aged and rural-standard freeway infrastructure including direct property accesses, at-grade interchanges, and two at-grade bus stops. We are calling for the removal of direct property access, bus stops and central median breaks to improve safety, as well as the construction of new interchanges, including one at Bulmans Road. So, I encourage residents to get behind this campaign. Visit catchup.org.au/melton and tell our politicians to catch up with Melton and upgrade the Western Highway. To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au
This important part of infrastructure adds two indoor basketball, netball and futsal courts, 12 tennis courts and three basketball hoops, amongst many other state-of-the-art amenities such as a change rooms, coaching offices and commercial kitchens and a servery. Improving community access to high quality sports facilities is so important for the ongoing wellbeing and health of local residents, and I encourage everyone to keep an eye out for opening dates. To find out more about these, and any other major infrastructure projects underway in the City of Melton, visit our website at melton.vic.gov.au or please feel free to contact me on 0437 241 436 or goran.kesic@melton.vic.gov.au with any Council issues.

This one has plenty to offer a family that will appreciate a large blank-canvas backyard to complete personal projects, while indoors there are two distinct living areas, always an advantage for spread-out time. There are four good-sized grey-carpeted bedrooms, three with built-in robes. The large street-facing main bedroom has a walk-in robe and an en suite. The main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry are in a rear hallway shared by the secondary bedrooms. A carpeted open lounge room is next to the tiled entry walkway, with the kitchen and meals area next up. The kitchen has a brekkie bar for four, plenty of storage and other bench space and an underbench oven, 900mm gas cooktop and a dishwasher. A carpeted rumpus room neighbours the meals area – a fab space for quiet movie watching, a playroom for the kids or even a fifth bedroom. Ducted heating and a split-system take care of seasonal comfort, while security shutters throughout add to peace of mind as well as providing extra temperature control. The property, which is leased until June, also has a water tank and a drive-through double garage. The block is about 600 square metres.

Between the train station and Woodgrove Shopping Centre, this house on about 605 square metres would make a great start for a young family or an investor who can expect $320 a week rental – it’s leased until September. It has floorboards all through, including in the three good-sized bedrooms. They share a bathroom with modern vanity and soft-burgundy tiling. The lounge-dining room has blingy lightfittings and an exposed brick wall at one end where an archway ushers in the kitchen. Plenty of storage and bench space is in the kitchen, which also has a 900mm stainless-steel cooker and dishwasher. A covered alfresco area looks out to a big, secure backyard. Also on offer are ducted heating and cooling and a driveway to a shed/garage, as well as space on the other side to add second backyard access, STCA.

First-home buyers or empty-nesters are bound to be delighted with this chic three-bedroom house in Melton’s popular Willandra estate. A contemporary garden of shrubs, trees and outdoor features leads past a double garage set into a smooth, part-rendered and part-bricked facade and up to a glass-panelled door. Inside, there’s plenty to enjoy. A light-filled formal lounge room to the right of the entrance hall has slimline windows that have the same sharp

rollerblinds that adorn several windows in the rest of the house, while underfoot is the charcoal-toned carpet that also cocoons the bedrooms. Further down the foyer, the main bedroom has a walk-in-robe and an airy en suite with generously proportioned stone tiles and chrome fixtures similar to those in the main bathroom. In beautiful contrast to pale grey walls, timber-laminate floors with a light brown finish through the rest of the house lend sleek functionality to the open plan living
area. This is where the family and meals expanse meets a kitchen with shimmering white stone surfaces and cabinets, 900mm cooker and dishwasher and glossy dark-tiled splashback. A split-system is mounted on the wall of the family room to help keep everyone cooler when the mercury rises. When the weather turns colder, there is gas ducted heating through the entire house. Visible through the living room windows, the backyard has a row of evolving trees and garden beds for both amateur and

serious gardeners, while just beyond a sliding door there is a paved, under-roofline entertainment area. Tall, gunmetal-colored Colorbond fencing promotes an atmosphere of intimacy and helps keeps the residence sequestered from too many visual disturbances. Schools, some leisure facilities and public transport are a matter of short drives, while Woodland Shopping Centre is less than four kilometres away. 21 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 26, 2019
SPORT Storm thunders home for a second premiership Sydenham-Hillside has claimed back-to-back Victorian Turf Cricket Association women’s T20 titles. The best side all season, the Storm showed their composure when they needed it in the grand final, to beat Westmeadows for a second season. Storm captain-coach Catherine Morrow said it was a wonderful achievement to claim another premiership. “It’s fantastic for the girls that have worked really hard,” she said. “To go back-to-back is a massive achievement for the side and I’m so happy for them.” The Storm didn’t get the win without a fight, as the Warriors took it right up to them. The Storm made 4-84 off their 20 overs after being sent in. Morrow said it was slightly below the target they had set. “We wanted to make at least 90,” she said. “We’d been sent in on a quite damp pitch
from the morning dew and the balls were keeping low. “We ended up having the runs on the board and they had to do the chasing. Going at just over four an over we thought we would be able to hold them.” Brooke Todero was the standout with the bat, batting from the start through to the 16th over, making 30. Maryann Marsh, Kerry Scandolera and Nikita Chaudhary all contributed. Storm’s opening bowlers did the job early to put the side in the box seat. In need of runs, the Warriors lost frequent wickets and were bowled out for 72. “Our opening bowlers Hannah Brne and Holly Nagpal kept it really tight. They bowled the first eight overs and the Warriors were about 1-15,” Morrow said. “We made it hard for them it got to over two runs a ball. We took wickets at crucial times.”
Sydenham-Hillside has claimed a second women’s premiership. (VTCA)
Morrow was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Chaudhary and Marsh took two wickets each. Todero was named player of the match.
Morrow, who was the standout for the side this season, said it was good to see new players come into the side and have an impact straight away. “It’s a fantastic group,” she said. “We have 16 players in the group and everyone played a role even if they didn’t in this match, they helped get us here.” Morrow said after two premierships in their first two seasons, they were already keen to start planning for next season. She said they were keen to continue to the success they have had so far. “We’ll sit down in the off season and start thinking about next year and where we want to go,” Morrow said. “We’d like to recruit a few more players and have a second side. There’s a lot of young talent coming through, along with a few older heads.” Tara Murray

Sweet end to messy run By Tara Murray It wasn’t pretty, but Melton kept its finals hopes alive in the Victoria Sub-District Cricket Association south-west competition. Needing to beat Altona to remain in finals contention heading into the final round, the Lions snuck home with one wicket remaining. Resuming at 2-21 and needing 123 for victory, the Lions had the game in their favour heading into day two. But the Lions batting has been poor this season, especially when chasing. It was a battle, but the Lions eventually finished 9-127. Lions coach Nathan Geisler said the final score was the most important thing. “It wasn’t pretty, but we got the result,” he said. “We still made some errors at crucial points of the game. There was a couple of points that we thought we could close it out, but we left the door open.” Geisler said there were a few nervous 22 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 26, 2019
moments, when the Lions were still 23 runs away from victory, with only one wicket remaining. Having changed around their batting line-up on day one, it meant the Lions had a bit more depth to play with on Saturday. “The two Jakes [Thornton-Gielen and Charge] batted really well and we were happy to get the points.” Ash Sweet, who was promoted up the order last week, top scored with 40. Geisler said he was likely to bat higher than normal again next week. “Ash has been in good form and made another 40, without his 40 runs we wouldn’t have won the game.” Just three other players scored double figures, including Thornton-Gielen, who finished 19 not out coming in at number 10. Geisler said they were pleased with the win as it’s the Lions first since round eight and has them sitting in eighth. He said there was still plenty of work to
do ahead of their final round match against Brighton. “We’re working hard in that area,” he said of the batting. Like the Lions, Brighton needs a win to have any chance of finals. Both teams, along with seventh-placed Yarraville, sit three points outside the top six. It leaves five teams fighting for the last two finals position. Fifth-placed Ormond (36 points) faces Altona, sixth-placed Hoppers Crossing (36 points) faces ladder leader Caulfield and Yarraville (33 points) plays Elsternwick. Geisler said the task for the final round was simple. “We need to win,” he said. “The door is still open. We just need to win and let the rest take care of itself.” Geisler said they will probably have a few players unavailable in the final round. Geisler, who normally only plays the one-day matches, said he might come back into the side.
Burnside Heights has appointed experienced coach Jeff Stevens as its women’s coach for the Essendon District Football League season. With former coach Brent Thomas stepping down from the role due to health reasons last month, Stevens has been given the job of leading the women’s side in their second season. Stevens said one of the main reasons he decided to apply for the role was it allowed him to coach while he could still watch his three children play football. His daughter Ebony Stevens plays in the Bears’ side, while his other daughter Brodie is aligned with the Bears while playing with Williamstown in the VFLW competition. Son Dyson Stevens, who also played VFL, will play with Melton in the Ballarat Football League this season. “I haven’t coached for the last few seasons,” Stevens said. “I’ve been watching my kids play football. “What interested me at the start was being able to coach the Burnside women’s side and get to watch Dyson, Ebony and Brodie play football.” Stevens brings an extensive coaching background to the role, not only from football but other sports as well. He coached juniors at Deer Park from under-10s through to under-19s, coached at the Western Jets and Western Region Football League interleague sides. He’s also coached women’s netball and basketball for a number of years. Stevens took his first training session with the women’s side last week and said he was ready to get things under way. He said coaching a side which finished runners-up last season was something that excited him about the role. The Bears lost just two matches last season, both to eventual premier Pascoe Vale. “The girls have been thrown around a bit and as I said to them, Monday is a fresh start,” he said. “We have a similar squad to last season. There’s still a lot of room for improving. “For me, it’s about teaching them the correct technique. If they can learn that it will help them a lot.” Tara Murray

Westside Strikers promote a ‘raring to go’ philosophy Westside Strikers know they are very unlikely to have the success that came their way last year – but they’re ready for the challenge of FFV state league 4 west. Having claimed the state league 5 west championship and promotion in their first season, the Strikers are bracing themselves for a much tougher time as they step up a grade. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said they were realistic about what they could achieve this year. “The season we had first-up we couldn’t have imagined,” he said. “This year is going to be a lot harder – if we could get into the top four we would be very happy.” Raniolo said they had kept last year’s squad together, but the playing group understood there was a need for added depth. He said there was still plenty of confidence among the group after the success of last season. “We’ve kept all the players from last year –
they’re happy to stay on board and continue the journey. We have recruited a few guys from higher levels – about half a dozen players. “We’re trying to work them into our system and getting them raring to go.” On Saturday, the Strikers got their first official action of the season, facing Thornbury Athletic in the FFA Cup. The Caroline Springs-based side lost 2-1 after being up at half-time. Raniolo admitted before the game that the Strikers didn’t have their strongest side in for the match. He said that despite the benefits of the FFA Cup, it wasn’t the focus for the year. “We’ve got a few injuries and a few of the new signings aren’t playing,” he said about the cup. “We’ve only had one practice match. For us the focus is on the season and championship.” Raniolo said that overall, the club was continuing to thrive. It has been holding trials for the juniors sides and is set to have more teams than last year.
Among the new teams is expected to be another girls team and an under-18 boys team. “We’ve increased by 50 players,” Raniolo said. “We have more juniors coming through.” The Strikers will start their FFV season away against Bell Park on March 23. Meanwhile, fellow state league 4 west side Spring Hills is through to the next round of the FFA Cup after its opponent, Keysborough, forfeited. The draw for round two was scheduled for Monday. Kyneton has missed out on a finals spot in the Central Highland Bowls top division despite a massive final round win. Kyneton, which entered the round in fifth, needed to beat Bacchus Marsh by 18 points or have a big win and other results go its way to sneak into the top four. Kyneton did the job against Bacchus Marsh, winning 98 (15)-91 (3), but as Kyneton Golf and Lancefield won comfortably, they missed out on the top four by two points. Gisborne Red, which claimed the minor premiership with a win against Romsey, will play Lancefield in the opening week of finals for a spot in the grand final, while Kyneton Golf will play Bacchus Marsh for a spot in the preliminary final. Gisborne Yellow became the first side from a club to avoid relegation from the top grade in its first year, finishing above Trentham.
By Tara Murray Win and play finals – that is the task for Diggers Rest Bulla in the final round of the Gisborne District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. The Burras moved into the top four on Saturday with an upset win against second-placed Gisborne. The Burras are 2.72 points ahead of fifth-placed Woodend heading into the final round – and the two sides will do battle over the next two weekends. Burras captain coach Rasika Batepola said finals had come early for his side. “We’re playing Woodend this weekend, which is like a final,” he said. “Then, if we win, its another final – and if we win that, it’s the grand final. “We believe in ourselves.” Needing 194 for victory against Gisborne, the Burras didn’t get off to the best start. Darren Quarrell was ruled out of the second day of play due to a family emergency, meaning the Burras had only 10 batsmen to get the job done. They managed – seven wickets down and finally bowled out for 220. Batepola said despite facing one of the best bowling attacks in the competition, they were confident. “We had some challenges, but we believed that we could do it,” he said. “We’re clicking as a team and hopefully next week we can continue with the same confidence.” Upul Fernando top scored with 81 for the Burras as all the top seven got starts. Batepola said Fernando was able to keep the innings together and ensure the target was reached. “He is the best bat in the team,” Batepola said. “His temperament during that innings was really good. It was one of the best innings I’ve seen in the competition. “He stood up for us making 81, but for me it was like he made 200. Other people chipped in to get the massive win for us.” Batepola said they would take a lot of confidence into the match with Woodend. The Burras won the two-day clash between the sides earlier in the season. “Woodend is playing well, as well,” he said. “Hopefully, we will be at our best and can get the win.” In other results, Romsey sealed its finals spot while putting Woodend’s in doubt. Needing a massive 329 for victory, Woodend nearly got there on the back of Warren Else’s 106 not out. Woodend fell just short, bowled out for 315. Sunbury has all but retained its spot in the top grade with an outright win against Wallan.

A win against ladder leaders Mt Clear has come a little too late for Darley as its finals hopes in the Ballarat Cricket Association ended. Needing 273 for victory, the Lions did it the hard way after some late wickets, finishing 9-273. Rick Moore made 105, while skipper Michael Alexander was solid with 86. Having needed an outright win to stay in the mix, the Lions sit seventh, 10 points outside the top four with one round remaining, with a much lower percentage than fourth-placed North Ballarat. The Lions face Wendouree in the final round.

Kane Shaw contributed 30 for Diggers Rest Bulla on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
Needing to add 12 runs for first-innings points on day two, the Roar did it with ease, bowled out for 159, a lead of 39. Wallan then made 7-141 in its second innings, with Sunbury finishing 4-103 to grab an outright win.
Sunbury is nearly 16 points clear of the bottom-placed Magpies. Bacchus Marsh sealed top spot with a massive win against Sunbury United. Needing 160, the Bulls smashed 4-348, with Alex Porter finishing unbeaten on 161.
Melton will need a big win against second-placed Sunbury in the final round if it’s any chance of avoiding relegation in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. After struggling for most of the season, Melton is second bottom heading into the final round. The bottom two teams are relegated. They are currently 11 points behind third-last Werribee, leaving Melton needing a win and Werribee to have a big loss for Melton to avoid finishing in the bottom two. On Saturday, Melton lost to Glenroy, 83 (14)-77 (4).
